Sharaya J B.A.N.J.I. and Beautiful

www.MidwestBlackHair.com

19

“B.A.N.J.I.”, a phrase and song that is taking the Hip Hop world by

storm is looked at as being the biggest hit out there this summer, thanks to the newest emcee to hit the scene this year, Hip Hop Artist and Dancer, Sharaya J. With the assistance from the legendary artist, Missy Elliott, Sharaya J is showing us what it means to be “B.A.N.J.I” and Beautiful.

Sharaya J

We had a chance to interview Ms. Sharaya J. for our readers, check it out below!

20

MWBH: Where are you from? Sharaya J: I am a native Hawaiian but born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. MWBH: Your single BANJI was recently released and has been receiving raving reviews. Can you explain to our readers what the BANJI Movement is? Sharaya J: Sure, first let me say that the word BANJI is an acronym for Be Authentic Never Jeopardize Individuality. It came about when I had a meeting with some record execs and after hearing some of my music and watching me perform they agreed that they liked the records and thought I had great stage presence but all I needed to do to breakthrough in the industry was, “…wear a lil less clothes, dress more sexy, put heels on, and then get a weave.” LOL! Of course that wasn’t happening because if it was clear I had talent why couldn’t I present my true self to the world??? In that moment I realized that I wanted to create a movement that celebrated uniqueness, authenticity, and individuality. I wanted to prove to people who try to put you in a box, that you don’t have to conform to make it out here. MWBH: Are you currently working on an album, and when is it set to be released? Sharaya J: Yes I am. I don’t have a direct release date yet, because I’m just letting the time come to me organically, I believe that great things take time and I really want to present something special to the fans. MWBH: What separates you from other female artist? Sharaya J: You know it’s funny because I respect all female emcees and artist in general, I really don’t try to focus on the things that set me apart from them I focus all my energy on what makes me who I am. I try to be the best version of myself, work to my highest potential, and as long as I continue to do that I will inevitably stay in my own lane.

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2012

21

MWBH: Where can people purchase/ download your music? Sharaya J: Itunes, Googleplay, Amazon and a couple other places. MWBH: You and Missy Elliott made a great team on the BANJI song. Are there any other artists that you would love to work with that you haven’t yet worked with? Sharaya J: Thank you. I’d love to collab with some of the artist I grew up listening to! I’m kinda open to working with anyone as long as it makes sense. MWBH: Tell us a little about your fashion style? Sharaya J: I think the fact that I am a dancer as well definitely plays a part in my style. I love to rock baggy clothes because most of the time I’m getting ready to hit a 8 count lol but I like to switch it up too. I love some retro 80’s and 90’s looks wit a twist. I also like pieces that make a statement. (one of kinds) MWBH: In your BANJI video, we see you rocking a blue gumbi hairstyle that we LOVE! Do you have any other favorite hairstyles? Sharaya J: Thank you. I love rocking the gumby and I kinda ended up there because I may have tried every hairstyle there is lol. I like to make a statement with my hair, it’s just another opportunity express my creativity. I fancy short cuts. MWBH: How do you keep your hair color so rich in color? What products do you use? Sharaya J: It sure is a process that’s for sure lol. I use a couple kinds of semi-permanent turquoise dye, I mix em all together so the color never exactly comes out the same but I like it that way. One that I use in particular is called Manic Panic. MWBH: What are your favorite hair products and tools?

22

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2012

Sharaya J: I love a great conditioner. I have to keep my hair moisturized because I bleach it so much and I love a good ol’ pick! MWBH: Are there any projects that you are currently working on? Sharaya J: I’m always working on something lol, but we have some great virals that we are about to release. I’m doing music every day and got some great things lined up concerning the dance world!

Mompreneur The

By: Nicole Pannell

What comes to mind when you think about the word Mom? Do you think of words such as, wise, practical, understanding, warm, kind, loving and giving?? What about resourceful, hardworking, accommodating, fearless, strong?? Do the occupations doctor, nurse, lawyer, bookkeeper, chef, seamstress, judge, counselor, teacher and taxi cab driver come to mind as well? The word Mom is one of the most powerful words used in the English language and it contains several definitions, functions and job descriptions. Within the last decade, a new style of Mom has transcended upon us and amazed even its strictest critics. What is this new style of Mom you ask? Why I am so glad you did. This new style of mom is called the Mompreneur (Mom and Entrepreneur mixed) and some affectionately call her a Momager (Mom and Manager) this article is only going to focus primarily on the Mompreneur. Who is she?? She is the lady standing behind you on the grocery check out line, you have spoken with her as you and she wait during your children’s little league games, you may see her from time to time freshening up her mani/pedi or making her latest deposit at the bank. She is your neighbor, your fellow church member and quite possibly your friend. She is the owner and sole proprietor of her own successful business. She is yesteryear’s Mary Kay or Avon lady and has now taken her place and gaining recognition for being successful in the Fortune 500 world running her own financially sound corporation. Even with her success and business prowess she still juggles doctors and dentists appointments, buys her own groceries and prepares her own home cooked meals EVERY night. She attends PTA meetings, reviews homework and still manages to make time to have grown up conversations with her significant other as they carefully chart out their 5 year success plan for themselves and their families.

34

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2012

She is a living, walking, and talking example of brains, beauty and humility all rolled up into one human being. She has encountered her share of disappointments, obstacles and set backs yet she has never put her own dreams of encountering success on the back burner. In the past few weeks, I have been blessed to run into some wonderful examples of the Mompreneur. They have encouraged me, they have motivated me and they have empowered me to move forward in my own endeavors of being a financially sound business proprietor. Though I have encountered many; I wish I could showcase them all to be quite honest but two women I continued to run into. Each time I had the pleasure of sharing time and space with these two women I was intrigued by them and wanted to know more about them.

Meet Janaya Stevenson

Occupation: Make Up Artist/Stylist Age: 32 Hometown: Kansas City, MO Marital Status: Widowed How long have you been owning, operating and managing your own business? I have been owning, operating and managing my own business for a lil over a year now but unknowingly for quiet sometime now. Preparation is what I like to call it. Gods timing is ALWAYS the BEST TIME. What steps did you take in preparing to launch out as a business proprietor? The #1 was saying YES THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO, THIS IS MY PASSION. GOD said GO & I WENT. I used the computer, phone, family, church family, friends,co workers etc for self research, projects, models, etc to get started. As a stylist/MUA you HAVE TO KNOW YOUR STUFF...THE INS/OUTS, TRENDS, BODY FIGURES, FABRICS, & THE LIST GOES ON & ON & ON & ON. I started networking heavily on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram like NEVER BEFORE because in this business you can’t just talk about what you do; you have to SHOW & LET IT BE KNOWN THAT YOUR HERE & READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD. JL MARIE MOTTO: TAKING STYLE TO THE NEXT, SO PACK YOUR BAGS!

What is one major struggle that you have now gained victory over? My biggest struggle was honestly FAILING BECAUSE OF NOT PUSHING MY SELF. Reality sat in & said WHEN YOU WANT SOMETHING ESPECIALLY WHAT YOUR HEART DESIRES YOU CANT BE AFRAID TO GO GET IT & SOMETIMES YOU WILL TAKE SOME LOSSES BUT WHAT YOU WILL GAIN IS FAR MORE & THE BEST IS YET TO COME. VICTORY IS JL MARIE ENTERPRISES.

35

How did you become interested in becoming a stylist?? I have always been into fashion, its second nature loll. I come from a fashion forward family, starting from my grandparents as the head leaders of style. I remember as and a lil girl watching my mom & my aunt sew from everyday/work attire-Sunday church dresses. I loved helping them cut out the pattern pieces, it made me feel like I was apart of the creation of whatever was being made. I then tried sewing & that wasn’t for me lol but that didn’t stop me from being into fashion so I then started creating looks & styles from my clothes. I didn’t know then that lil joy & happiness of clothes would turn into MY PASSION OF BEING a STYLIST/MUA (makeup artist) How can you use your passion to reach young ladies? I am currently working with second-fifth grade young ladies at Boone Elementary School as a mentor of their fashion club. My PASSION has pushed me to want to pour the same EXACT DRIVE, TIME, LOVE that my mom did into me. She never told me NO TO CLOTHES & MAKEUP, ALWAYS TOLD ME YOU CAN BE & DO WHATEVER YOU PUT YOUR MIND, HEART & TIME INTO ESPECIALLY WITH GOD ON YOUR SIDE, YOU CANT FAIL...SHE WAS RIGHT...YOU CANT. My #1 goal is to first be the best role model for my daughter Lundyn Jmyia. As a mother it is very important that I always display a woman of CLASS, STATURE, RESPECT, SELF WORTH, GO GET IT DRIVE & that as long as you desire it, it can be manifested. I am also currently preparing to start tutorials teaching women how to apply makeup: 1VS1 WITH JL MARIE along with self esteem. They go hand in hand with each other. Once you as women know your SELF WORTH YOU'LL THEN KNOW WHAT YOU DESERVE & MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. What is your personal definition of style vs. class? My personal definition of style when you’re not afraid to express & be YOU. Trend setter, creative mastermind. Class is set before you. It’s the way carry yourself, the confidence. YOU CAN’T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER... STLYE OF CLASS!!!! Tell us what's trending now for the young ladies 18 to 25 in hair, nails and makeup? Now what’s trending for ladies of 18-25 in hair, nails and makeup MAKING A STATEMENT.BOLDNESS, CREATNG a BRAND/WAVE OF SOMETHING NEW? 25-35 CAREER/BUSINESS MINDED; you’re distinguishing SWAG form CLASS 40 & UP ELGANCE AT ITS FINEST, YOU’RE THE STARTER OF WHAT THE 18-25 IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH...SEASONED STYLIST Photos | Steven M. Green

36

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2012

What do you want to accomplish professionally within the next two years? Professionally within the next two years I plan to start my own cosmetic line. I want to start with foundations/bronzers, as women we have a variety of undertones & sometimes we have to mix and/or use multiple products to just get that "FLAWLESS" look well I want to be able to have a product that will cover all those in one along a have your face feel as a light as a feather. I also want to start a FASHION CAMP FOR YOUNG CHILDREN breaking them down into three groups DESIGNERS, STYLIST & MUA. I BELIVE IF WE FOCUS & PUSH THE POSITIVE IN THEM THEY WONT HAVE TIME TO FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVE BECAUSE THEY'LL BE APART OF CHANGING & MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD BY TAKING IT OVER THROUGH FASHION.

How important is make up to a female's wardrobe? Is it essential or non essential? MAKEUP IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE...THE COMPLETION OF DISPLAYING THE INSIDE ON THE OUTSIDE. One thing is that makeup is to ENHANCE YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY not creating an illusion.

Meet Leesa Montgomery:

Occupation: Owner of Exquisite Handbags and Jewelry Boutique City: Raytown MO What are the current trends that you are noticing in handbags and accessories?? From vibrant colors to eye-catching prints, this season is all about unique spring style like the crystal clutches that your niece model with her green tutu. From beauty to fashion, orange has become the new "it" color of style. For a fun way to accessorize with this popular color orange and neon green like our model did. Trendy Items: Glittery pieces from handbags, tops to earrings. Any particular style or color that seems to be popular with the fashionistas??? While scarves are usually associated with fall and winter, you can easily rock one during the spring season. It all comes down to the material and design of the scarf. If you're looking to incorporate scarves into your spring wardrobe, keep an eye out for lightweight fabrics such as silk, cotton or chiffon. Prints that feature floral, stripes, polka dots, and vibrant colors are also appropriate for spring. Studded items are also big on clothes, shoes and accessories it like Madonna has reappeared. :)

Other popular colors are turquoise, neon colors, pink and yellow. Polka Dots are also in, you will be seeing dots everyone on watches, scarves, shoes and handbags to say the least.

Concerning handbags and accessories: which is better? Big, small or functional? Handbags should be functional and bag that seems to be the current trends. Most women are so busy that they need the handbag to be fashionable but also a mobile office and classy diaper bag. Should our accessories blend in with our outfit or should it make it pop? When it comes to accessories and handbags you want them to make a statement. So as a classy but sassy fashionist I would say you need to make it POP! What advice would you give on making accessory shopping easy, fun and affordable?? When shopping for accessories and handbags you want them to be multifunctional and fun. Buy pieces that you can interchange and go from the office to happy hour. Classy but Sassy... Be Exquisite! Exquisite Boutique & More

Hair Entrepreneur

Tracee Amos CEO of JuJu Hair Company

Bio Born into rough humbling beginnings, Tracee Amos always knew she was different. Being adopted and moved to Los Angeles with her twin sister Stacee, at the tender age of 6, Tracee knew that could not determine her worth. Raised by a woman who instilled strong family values and a hard work ethic, Tracee embraced what made her different to make her stronger and successful. Over the years Tracee obtained an entrepreneurial spirit, a few start up businesses that ambled her to avoid financial strain and start-up the next. Tracee managed to stay grounded, learning quite a bit about herself and her strong instinct developing a street wise sensibility, business savvy

and survival skills. Having a hustle mentality & gaining drive at such a young age turned on light for Tracee, she used her foundation to keep her focused, guarded and positive; these are the tools that continue to shape her approach at life. Soon into her adult years Tracee recognized her passion for beauty and hair care. Being a woman of color and having dealt with troubled skin she noticed that the shelf life of a woman’s skin had an expiration date and she was a witness to many testimonials from her friends and family with their troubles in finding products that were right for her culture.

This added to her determination to learn the business of beauty and to continue with a skill set she could return to women of color worldwide. Still a bit unclear as to where to channel her business in beauty, Tracee was struck with the loss of her mother. Her adopted mother had been dealing with ovarian & brain cancer and Tracee battled the disease with her until the end. Deeply invested in paying homage to her mother’s legacy after watching her mother undergo Chemotherapy and witnessing first hand her mother losing her hair, which is every woman’s strength. Tracee decided to dive head first into the business of hair extensions, properly named after her mother “JuJu”, JuJu HAIR Company was born. Although blessed with early success, from JuJu

Hair Company, expanding from domestic to international clientele, Tracee admits that she still has much more to accomplish. She has always had a fetish for makeup and has plans to develop a Makeup line for women with troubled and sensitive skin. “My goal is for every woman to feel beautiful and to help them achieve a natural look with my products.” says Tracee. Married to her Husband, of 10 years strong Tracee is not only planning to extend her business but her family as well. Launching her new “Nubian Curly” textured hair & series of Makeup workshops, Tracee is determined to make her mark within the beauty industry amongst her peers. Tracee is living proof that when you work hard you can live it, enjoy it and make your mark on the world – and look “Juicy” while doing it!

Interview MWBH: When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? T.Amos: I've always known that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. There was something on the inside of me, that said "I WILL WORK FOR MYSELF" I had a hunger to create my own destiny, and I took a leap of faith and here I am.

MWBH: Tell us a little more about JuJu Hair Company. T.Amos: JuJu Hair Company was born in 2008, and the goal was and still is to offer the best high quality product on the market, at an affordable price. We want to give every woman the opportunity to look and feel their best, regardless of their budget.

MWBH: What or who was your inspiration for creating the JuJu Hair Company? T.Amos: My beautiful mother is the inspiration behind JuJu Hair Company. She passed away from cancer in 1999, and to physically watch someone lose their hair to chemotherapy was shocking. I do this in her honor. Also, in 2007 I watched a documentary about the lack of ownership among African Americans in the hair extensions business, despite being it's #1 consumer. I thought that was INSANE.

MWBH: What is your favorite thing about working in the beauty industry? T.Amos: Early on I had a customer that had alopecia, due to childbirth, and felt ugly because she lost so much of her hair. She installed the Natural Curly product, and cried profusely because she was so happy with the way she looked and felt. Those are the moments that make me so happy that I am in the beauty industry. MWBH: What advice would you give to an up and coming entrepreneur? T.Amos: Whatever your dream or goal, stick with it! It took me a year to turn a profit, if I would have given up, I would have not never known my potential.
