Review: Dr. Amerson’s Alopecia Awareness Cruise 2012 By Dr. Linda Amerson My 1st Alopecia Awareness Cruise was a tremendous success! We set sail September 10-15, 2012, to the Western Caribbean. After fifteen months of marketing and advertising this highly anticipated cruise, it was off the chain!!! All of my guests truly enjoyed themselves. We departed from Galveston, TX, and docked at Yucatan Progresso and Cozymel.

much fun, gained weight with the all you could eat food 24/7, shopped, relaxed, did beach excursions, other excursions, relaxed in the hot tub, sang karaoke, laughed, line dancing, attended shows, played dominoes, played taboo- men against the women, played spades and whatever we wanted to do.

After departure, I surprised everyone with tote bags full of goodies…and stepped out of the box to write and sing a cruise theme song. “Cruise with a purpose” was an instant success! I was so excited that everyone loved it! It was suggested that I go into a recording studio and record it to music and have it copyrighted. So that is what I am doing before it is released. How exciting…my own cruise theme song! You will hear it soon!!! Since we were combining alopecia awareness and vacation, we only had a schedule for Awards Night and the two Educational Trichology Seminars by Dr. Amerson. We had so

One of the most commonly neglect-

ed areas of the face when it comes to beauty are the eyebrows. Countless women have no desire to have their eyebrows waxed off, threaded away or tweezed to perfection. It is important to know that the eyebrows are the frame of the face. They are just as significant as the eye make-up painted beneath. Would you purchase a rare Rembrandt portrait enclosed in a tattered frame? I didn't think so. So why would one apply gorgeous eye color surrounded by unruly brow hair? It's still an ancient mystery. Many women are quite apprehensive about having their brows sculpted due to fear that too much hair will be removed. Especially, if untrained hands have touched them in times past. Additionally, due to a common misunderstanding they choose not to have their brows cleaned. A widespread misperception is that the brow is too thin. Darico Jackson stepped out with Keyisha Cole at a who’s who list of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest black starlets for the 2012 “Black Girls Rock” event. Darico took Keyisha from last year’s “no care hair” to a softer style for the event. Keyisha is one of those African-American stars who are capable of wowing their audience and fans beside everyone else by the way they look. One of the major parts of her eye-catching looks is her hair and no one does Hollywood’s hair better than DaRico Jackson. “Keyisha hair is always evolving. “ She tries various haircuts, sometimes it’s long or medium while other times it’s totally short says DaRico. DaRico’s work has long been admired by his peers and celebrity clientele alike as well as top fashion photographers such as Shaun Alexander. He is well known for being able to visualize how someone could look with the right transforming style, and then he makes it a reality for them.

He recently created these drop dead looks for Stacey Dash that were inspired by international catwalk trends and retro trends after Dash came under fire for her support of Mitt Romney.” We all have our own personal causes in our lives outside our careers that mean so much to us. He also worked on “An Afternoon of Elegance” celebrity charity fashion event for” A Love Beyond Me,” which is a charity devoted to uplift, encourage and inspire young children battling life threatening illnesses. DaRico and his Glam Team created the big hair for the afternoon show that was inspired by the 60’s and 70’s. His glam team boasts of LA’s top glamologists that included makeup artists Rhonda Bean, Ashley Gomilla, Valerie Page and hairstylists Jasmine Brod, Feana Smith, Andrea Pezillon and Michelle McFadden. In his role as a creative instructor for the Mizani Hair care company, DaRico is involved in developing the company's signature hairdressing techniques and travels the world presenting his expertise to international hairdressing audiences.

Who is Stacy Powell? Stacy is a multitude of things. She is a complex woman a born regulator and most times mis-understood. Her bold no non-sense attitude is also accompanied by a sharp tongue and quick witted infectious personality. To the surprise of many underneath her sassiness is a very warm and generous character that is very pleasant and charismatic. She is the girl next door, a Diva, a leader, Americas Next Top Model, a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, fighter, lover, Instructor, Activist, advocate, writer, Trendsetter, role model, helpmate, a treasure, a joy…… What inspired you to become an instructor? Becoming an instructor was like second nature for me. It was only what made sense. It was clear to me very early on that I had an effect on people. For some reason I talk and people listen. I am and always have been in Love with Cosmetology, and I’ve never been a stranger to helping, so here I am. What are your interests outside the world of cosmetology? What world outside of Cosmetology??? LOL. Is there a world outside of Cosmetology? It’s in everything an I take it with me everywhere I go in some shape or form. But to answer your question. Im really a girls girl. So I’m no stranger to the kitchen. I’m a bad girl in the kitchen too. I like to dance (Im a Stepper) and love music, Im a real dusties smooth groove type a girl.If I have music a bad situation can become enjoyable. I enjoy spending time with family and I don’t know why because all we do is argue. LOL and I usually start most of the arguments. I Cant help it I love em and if only they did what I said then every little thing would be alright (In my Bob Marley singing voice) What challenges have you faced in adding proprietary and instructor to your resume? The biggest challenges of my career have been maintaining balance. The demands of life don’t get easier as you move up they get much more intense

and balance was always my struggle. If I’m in then it 125% or nothing. I had to learn to balance my professional and personal life. What made you become a stylist? I don’t think that one becomes a stylist I think a being a stylist becomes one. Its becoming on some like the good fit of a hand in a glove. In my case I think I was a stylist long before I really understand the meaning of the word. Do you feel being a stylist is a natural talent or an acquired skill? Both. It is a natural talent and an acquired skill. What we have to understand about though is the skill is not so easily acquired without talent but most importantly talent. Most can learn to do anything with enough instruction and practice, nobody regardless to how great the instructor or intention can be taught to have passion or talent. www.MidwestBlackHair.com

What inspires you? Believe it or not I’m inspired by everything. Sometimes, a lot of times music is one of the biggest sources of inspiration for me, other times it color, scenery but most of all the God. What suggestions do you have for inspiring stylist? Inspiring stylist should focus not only on style & trend but business. Stylists are big givers. We share our creative talents, our opinions and the like and have such a great deal of passion for what we do that we sometimes forget it’s a business. What advice do you have for new stylist? With that the best advice I could give a new stylist is to have good business practices. Be fair and understanding when necessary ¸but be business minded at all times.

Do you have other goals outside the world of cosmetology? Outside of Cosmetology I have my personal goals. Marriage, children a white house with a 2 car garage, picket fence and a happy ending. Lol. No really family is very important to me and is one of my biggest unaccomplished goals, but I do have some other business ventures that I would like to fulfill. I have always wanted a ice cream shop. How would you suggest handling a situation when a style goes wrong? When a style goes wrong its usually because the stylist has lost sight of the goal or is using the wrong method in hopes of achieving that goal. In these cases the stylist will need to stop the process. Think back to the fundamentals of Cosmetology and hair styling, regroup and return to basic methods for correction. If you panic it will get worse, remain calm and can think clearly.

Don't want to be tied down by the obligations of high maintanenced hair color but looking for a new look? Try getting you hair ombréd. What's ombré? I'm glad you asked. Ombré is the technical term for the process of color in which only 3-5 inches of the tips of your hair is dyed. Its fun, fresh and low maintanenced. With this method you don't have to worry about getting root touch ups. You can either allow this process to grow out or just freshen up the ends from time to time. What I think would be fun is depending on how high you lighten your tips (blond wise) you can change the colors from gold to pink from green to blue. Have fun with your hues and don't be afraid to make a statement. Remember you are not nessecarily married to this fun frenchy. Take this time to have the best of both worlds all at once! Another hair color tip:lack commitment but love change, stay away from black hair color. The darker you go the harder it is to go over with another color or remove. About The Memorials The Memorials were spearheaded by Bay Area drumming prodigy, Thomas Pridgen, in December of 2009. After a few years performing with The Mars Volta, Thomas turned his attention to forming his own group, incorporating a range of styles as diverse as the experiences of the bands members. Instead of becoming another rock bands’ heartbeat, the focus was to collaborate with proficient musicians whom Thomas felt would fill a void he has heard in rock music throughout his life. Thomas reached out to friends and former students of the esteemed Berklee College of Music, Viveca Hawkins (vocals), and Nick Brewer (guitars), to join him in his newest endeavor. Recording with his friend’s yielded a family vibe that enabled a comfortable yet intense recording process. The groups’ assets were rounded out with the addition of a bass, organ, synthesizers, and multiple percussive elements. Thomas describes The Memorials’ first record as: “For me it was important to put a band together with my friends, and ya know, the record is a rollercoaster. Some songs are hard, but will make you cry by the end....” The aura of the recording sessions, and Thomas’ vision for the group, are reflected in the views of the bands members. Viveca Hawkins glows when speaking of the project: “We have totally made this project out of love…This album is made of the best of us, we put our hearts and souls into this.” The passion and intensity of the recording sessions is audible on The Memorials debut effort, as they combine a vast array of sounds atop Thomas and Nick’s compositions. Nick’s sprawling guitars and Thomas’ thick drums serve as the core of the sound, while Viveca’s voice brings it together perfectly. The end music is intelligent and calculated, exhibiting certain pop sensibilities within the scope of songs that rock out. The compositions highlight each musician’s incredible talent, while creating textured tracks that feel like vignettes of a band finding their stride.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I helped create the universe. I am a star fruit. My band is called the memorials. At what age did you start playing the drums and singing? I've been singing since I've been breathing Do you play any other instruments? I can get around the keys a Lil bit but I'd say I've mastered the kazoo. When did you determine that you wanted to be a professional vocalist? I have never had a greater aspiration in my life. If you could collaborate with any other musician dead or alive, who would it be? Tu PAC and jimi... gangsta! What other projects do you have coming up? I am trying to do some more solo work even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a mix tape.

What other hobbies do you have? I love nature. I like goin hiking and working in the garden and stuff... Describe your style. I'm kinda anti fashion but I clean up real nice ;) What is your favorite hair style? I love a good messy bun or a foe hawk but I usually just wear my hair down.
