High Aspirations has a vision to build stronger neighborhoods; it begins with building stronger men.
HIGH ASPIRATIONS is a 501 (c3) all contributions are tax deductible ■ Organization’s History
In 2004, High Aspirations (H.A.) was founded by Henry W. Wash. High Aspirations is a faith-based program that solely focuses on young African American males ages 8-18. The program supports them in four areas: socially, academically, emotionally and spiritually. Of the original group of young men involved in the High Aspirations program, 86% have moved forward successfully by attending post-secondary education school (either two year or four-year College), working full time or serving in the US Military. Since January 2012 High Aspirations has picked up over 50 bags of trash collected through our monthly community service program that does service once a month, established an entrepreneur training program, adopted 2 inner city lots to cut for the summer, received 45 applications, accepted 22 regular participants, received 47 new applications, currently have over 30 volunteers, 4 honor roll students, 6 mentees with jobs and 1 national honor society student.
■Programs and the foundation of High Aspirations 1st Saturday chess session builds critical thinking skills, patience and healthy competition. 2nd Saturday focuses on leadership/entrepreneurship training that develops the youth’s skills in leadership, participation and fosters success in home, school and community. 3rd Saturday is a pre-collegiate program created in partnership with local community colleges/universities that focuses on academic preparation and success. 4th Saturday is when the group (mentors and mentees alike) volunteers in the community; these activities foster the development of work skills and social engagement. ■ Special Programs: Entrepreneurship program, the mentees of High Aspirations work during the summer, spring, fall and winter months performing landscaping activities through partnership/coaching with Arvest Bank and Mariner Wealth Advisors. After the young men have obtained all the skills necessary they are given a lawn mower to start their own business. High Aspirations wishes to partner with a local church to provide spiritual development every Wednesday evening, designed to supplement the Saturday programming and instill spiritual engagement. ■ Future Program Plans High Aspirations Safe House is an innovative approach to reach millions more young men. The Safe House will be staffed 24/7/365 and offers a safe place where these young men can escape negative situations in their home, such as drug use, violence, or the influence of gang activity in their immediate neighborhood. The Safe House will demonstrate a healthy way to live life and provide a chance to survive. Planning and fundraising goals anticipate a grand opening in 2015. ■ Education /Scholarship High Aspirations believes in long-term commitments. Our ultimate goal is for each young man to receive a college education, commit to living in Kansas City, and become an asset who returns to High Aspirations to give back by mentoring others. We wish to establish a scholarship fund by 2015 to send recipients to college in Kansas City, all expenses paid.
How can you help? We need to raise resources to support our operations budget and expand our reach to more young men. “Please visit us at www.Highaspirationskc.org click on the I donate tab and simply donate.”

Bio
Stylish Makia Brooks was born and raised in East St. Louis, IL where she found her passion for Fashion and Art. It was there that Makia’s passion grew into a career of hairstyling at the age 14. Makia played sports throughout her school years and later graduated from high school but her desire to be creative and love for hair became more important. She was determined to work as a shampoo girl at local beauty salons just to gain experience. She later found herself enrolled in cosmetology school at the age of 18. This is where her creativity began with using rack combs to design lines as a way to create illusions for long styles to appear short. By the end of cosmetology school, Ms. Brooks had created a signature which then led to a demand for her edgy but different hairstyles. She is different, and her clients have been loving it for 9 years.

THE
LIST:
5 Staples Today's Woman Should Have in Her Closet By: Nikki Binion
It's time to fall into fashion and with deep colors, and classic pieces on the brain I've decided to make sure that you are prepared for what’s to come. There are several items that every woman should have in their wardrobe right about now. And if you don't have those items, rip this page out and consider it your shopping list.
1. The Undergarment Foundations are first. I don't care how uncomfortable these things have been known to be they are essential to a great fit. Like my friend once said " comfort and beauty aren't even play cousins, sometimes they just don't belong in the same sentence lets be real. You can't build a house without a foundation so why would you start building your outfit without one. There is nothing more unsightly than a whole lot of lumps and bumps under a great outfit. I prefer undergarments such as The Squeem or Spanx. They come in all shapes and sizes. http://www.classicshapewear.com/squeem-cotton-rubber-waist-cincher-faja-perfect-waist-26c26pw-p-748.html?osCsid=41f5a6e60e8bc130d5ba e4a59bfab43f
34
2. The Blazer This is a classic piece that keep making its debut. It’s constantly being reinvented to be made appealing to all sorts of women and lifestyles. This season, the blazer has made its come back in bold colors, waist lengths, and with added ruffles and embellishments. For this look for less,$39.95 to be exact, try H&M http://www. hm.com/us/subdepartment/ LADIES?Nr=4294926803
3. The classic white blouse (or the "boyfriend shirt") Nothing speaks fashion to me more than a crisp white button up blouse with a stand up collar. I absolutely love it. A great blouse can also add that special amount of fierceness to a simple outfit. This top can be paired with so many types of bottoms. A pencil skirt, a denim trouser, or a pant suit. You can't go wrong with this item and I'd advise you to own a few! Just a tip, don't be afraid to purchase them in different colors or prints also try in denim. This item can also be purchased in a pinch at H&M http://www.hm.com/ us/product/99514?article=99514A#article=99514-B
35
4. The Scarf Fashion scarves are my staple piece. I absolutely love a good looking scarf. They can add flare to something simple and even be the focal point of an outfit. Make this your statement neckwear this season. Keep your neck warm and look fabulous doing it! Check this out http:// www.hm.com/us/ product/03482?article=03482B#article=03482-B (Continued on Page 39)

5. The Loafer or Oxford Menswear has inspired women's fashion tremendously this season. From suits to footwear fashion has gone from his to hers and we are letting them know we mean business. No longer just the old fashionable flat, theses shoes have made their mark returning in forms of pumps and wedges. Check out shoe clubs such as shoe dazzle or such designers such as Jeffery Campbell and more for this modern day look.
Bonus item: Envelope clutch Vintage is true and in my opinion every modern day woman should throw a clutch in the mix every now and then. Something I like to call retro chic. Check this item also at H&M. http://www.hm.com/us/ product/00265?article=00265-A#article=00265-A

How did u come up with your known blog name, Beautiful Brwn Baby Dol?
After adopting a whole new life style by changing your hair regimen and literally losing the weight of another person per say, how does that make you feel?
• Beautiful Brwn Baby Dol represents 3 dimensions. BBBD (3-D). I am a woman who is about holistic health and life. I have many things that interest me and that make me excited to fulfill my purpose. In order to complete those things, you must in essence enjoy many aspects of yourself. Also, dolls are sentimental. They are played with, abused, put away, dressed, and go through many aspects of life. However they are timeless, tell a story, are passed down through generations and we always revisit them. Also, beautiful represents what I have become from the inside. I believe that since I have taken the time to be my very best, the beauty is now exuded on the outside. Of course we know I am quite perfectly brown!
• I would say that it makes me feel amazing. What's most fulfilling is that I am very happy with myself, truly confident and living well for me! I love waking up to take care of my hair, body and soul daily. What's even better is that is that I am able to give back to many others to help them live and feel their best. When I lost 100 pounds, it was a time in my life that I also wanted to change all unhealthy practices in my life, which led to me going natural as well. During that very time I was earning my Ph.D. Now I am continuing this journey as a young tenure-track professor and psychologist and motivational speaker. So it is quite evident that being healthy and at my best became a big part of all parts of my life.
After completing your bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree, with having your love for hair have you ever considered perusing a license in cosmetology. • Yes, I have thought about getting my license. I am actively pursuing branding license.

When did you discover you love for helping others as well as your love for individuals with autism?
• Ever since I was a child I have been involved in community service and helping to some degree. I always did work in the church such as feeding the homeless, cleaning and volunteering at the neighborhood outreach center. I also volunteered a few summers at nursing homes reading to and helping to take care of the elderly. I also began babysitting my little cousin when I was 11 years old. He had Asperger's Disorder. He was very connected to me and I grew to love him very much! As I grew I knew helping others was my calling. I also found this by engaging in various community service projects as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. As I went through my journey to fitness, education and natural hair, I wanted to share with others practical ways that they could use to achieve many of the same things. Furthermore, I wanted

them to avoid the many mistakes I made along the way. This is why I chose to start my YouTube channel and now this has lead to motivational speaking and giving back to those who desire the help and motivation.
Being natural for 3 years now, what are some of your favorite products that you would recommend to some other naturals?
I am very simple with products. I make some of my own products however there are other staples I enjoy! I love Koils by Nature (hair butters and shealoe leave in conditioner), HPO products (healthy hair butters), Shea Moisture (conditioners and hair masque), Miss Jessie's (super sweet back conditioner) and Trader Joe's (tingling tea tree shampoo and conditioner).
What is your inspiration?
My inspiration is being healthy and being the best I possible can be. I love working hard at everything I do. I love challenging myself and giving back to my community and family. I love the feeling that I am doing my part to make the world better. My focus is not to compete with other people but to perfect my craft and have long lasting success blessed by God. Furthermore my motivation comes through sharing on my YouTube channel and also www.beautifulbrwnbabydol.com.
