hair The Importance of Using Hair Conditioners By: Mia Kingsmill
D
o you apply hair conditioner after shampooing your tresses? Or are you content to leave your locks alone after you have rinsed off the shampoo? Whether you're a guy or a gal or whether you've got short hair or long hair, it's very important that you use hair conditioner as part of your grooming routine. In fact, while it is recommended that you wash your hair with shampoo only once or twice a week, it is a must that you condition your hair daily. The Functions of Hair Conditioners Why do you need to use hair conditioners, anyway? There are many reasons behind this, but to sum it up, conditioning your hair can make it softer, smoother and less prone to damage. The main function of hair conditioning products is to coax the scales making up your strands' outer cuticle layer to
12
lie flat against the shaft. This will instantly give your mane a smooth appearance. Beyond the sake of appearance, it is quite vital to keep the scales of the cuticle layer to stay flat and aligned. When these scales are lying just so, the moisture and nutrients that your tresses get from the hair care products you use are locked inside your strands. Moreover, it will be harder for heat and ultraviolet radiation to penetrate your hair shaft and do damage from within. Another purpose that hair conditioners fulfill is to moisturize and nourish your strands. Your tresses require moisture to appear smooth as well as to feel soft to the touch. They also need nutrients like protein, biotin, Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids to stay healthy. Ask any hair expert and they'll say that healthy hair is beautiful hair. How to Condition Your Hair It's not enough, though, to dab conditioner onto your tresses after every shower. Too little product won't be enough to deliver the benefits of
MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - October 2013
hair conditioning to your tresses, while too much will make your hair flat and limp. A generous dollop of conditioner fitting the palm of your hand is usually enough. As mentioned earlier, you need to condition your hair every day. Massage that dollop of conditioner onto your scalp. Put a little bit on your ends as well. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing your tresses. If you're going to blow-dry your hair or use heat-based styling appliances like hair straighteners or hot rollers, you should apply leave-on conditioner first before doing so. The leave-on conditioner will protect your tresses from excessive heat exposure as well as give your strands the added moisture they need to withstand the heat. At least once a week, you should also make it a point to deep condition your hair. You can visit your hairdresser for this, but if you can't afford weekly conditioning treatments, you can easily do this at home on your own. Massage the product onto your scalp and coat
your ends and tresses with it. Deep conditioning will replenish the nutrients your strands lost from exposure to heat and pollution as well as from daily wearing and tearing. For best results, use a deep conditioner with pure argan oil. If you want to have beautiful hair, you really have to add hair conditioning to your grooming routine. Regular hair conditioning will give you not just lovely-looking locks but also keep your tresses healthy. As much as possible, use only high-quality conditioners that will provide maximum nourishment for your hair. Try out hair conditioners like KMS and Moroccanoil. She’ Nail Polish
Photos | Tania Asaro
Rashetta Miller, creator of She’ Nail Polish, received her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at The College of New Rochelle and then didn’t know what to do with her life, but she knew she had to do something. The question remained what would that be? Owning her own business always came to mind, but the fear of starting her own business and failing began to take over her.
20 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - October 2013
“My addiction for nail polish grew from me purchasing one color of red polish at my job. I had purchased this red polish so it could match an outfit I was wearing on my birthday. From that day forward, I never wore clear polish again. My friends used to call me “plain Jane” . When it came to me wearing nail polish, I refused to step out of my comfort zone. I would only wear clear polish on my nails and color polish on my feet. Within a month, I went from purchasing one red polish to owning over 50 nail polishes. I fell in love with the way the polish looked on my hands and the fact that I finally stepped out of my comfort zone. And for once, my hands and feet both matched.”
The idea of wanting to start her own nail polish line came from having a conversation with a co-worker. As she was about to purchase more nail polish. The exact words to her were, “Why don’t you start your own line of nail polish”? The co-worker’s words whispered throughout her head, then she asked herself, “Why not invest in something I enjoy buying”. Who doesn’t wear nail polish in this day and age? Women, most men and children wear nail polish. Nail polish is like an accessory, you can mix and match your colors, go plain, add design, find colors to match your everyday mood, and it can be worn in any season. So here she is today, investing in her dreams, her passion: She Nail Polish “colors that brighten up any mood’. “I am proud to say that I overcame my fears and pursued my dream. It wasn’t easy, but now I can share my passion with the world.” Everyone of her nail polish colors has it’s own story line behind it that represent each color. She’ nail polish is affordable, it lasts long, it is of excellent quality and it doesn’t have the four chemicals ‘formaldehyde, toluene, camphor and dibutyl phathalate (DBP) which are harmful to humans. And most important, my product is not tested on animals.

iffney Cambridge “Marrying The Game” + Mother & Role Model + Philanthropist + Educator
Tiffney Cambridge is a well known television personality – co-star of VH1’s hit reality series, “Marrying The Game.” A Los Angeles, CA native, born and raised in Inglewood, CA is also a schoolteacher of over 16 years. Tiffney is well educated, holding a Master’s degree in Multicultural Education, which she earned from the University Of Southern California. A few words to describe Tiffney are intelligent, well spoken and driven - a true go–getter who is not only attractive but also commands her respect in this male-driven world! Midwest Black Hair Magazine had a chance to get to Tiffney a little better including why she loves teaching, how she makes her high profile family run smoothly, and even hair regins for her and her kids! Check it out! Many of our readers know you from the VH1 Reality Show, "Marrying The Game", but tell us more of who Tiffany Cambridge really is. Well you know I’m a mother, teacher, very good friend, daughter, and sister, a lot of good and positive relationships. I’m also the fiancé to a very high profile celebrity, and that is a part of me that you guys see, and on the show you do get to see more of my personality who I am as a woman and as a mother, I think it comes across well this season. Will there be a season 3? The viewers will have to talk to vh1 about that. Definitely something that I think the viewers are interested in, and will probably happen.

There is a lot of buzz about the Brest Cancer PSA that recently aired on the VH1 website. Can you share what it feels like to raise awareness for this disease? My mother too passed from breast cancer, I’ve had numerous people in my family who were affected by breast cancer. So I definitely wanted to participate in that program and really get that awareness out there about breast cancer and breast cancer awareness. Especially coming up on October which is breast cancer awareness month. I want woman to be knowledgeable about breast care, mammograms, early detection, and really look to take care of themselves. Because breast cancer is affecting younger women, African American women, and I just want to be part of a movement that encourages women to take care of themselves and be cautious. We heard that you will be coming out with a new children's book series later this year. Can you tell us more about that? I am still in the process of writing them, so we may have to wait until the first quarter of next year. But my new children’s book is based around a little girl that was in my class that lost her smile. And in the series this little girl turned out to school with a big beautiful smile on her face. But as she went through early childhood experience at school and early adolescence she lost it. And so she got it back and was reversed and reborn and able to live again and able to be happy. What made you want to go into the education field? And what do you
love the most about it? I love when kids get it. And you can inspire someone to want to learn, to motivate them, to care about education. I think that is what I’ve been blessed to be able to do. Kids are really inspired by me, they really like me as a person, they feel cared about and taken care of not only emotionally but physically as well. I have kids that come to me that’s been abused or they just want a hug, kids just want to feel that someone cares about them. I think I do that for them. So, it’s just a joy seeing their faces when they get a concept, or the fact that they can feel re-assured that they have a place to go and someone that cares about them. It’s just my way of giving back. One thing I love about teaching really be able to share literature and books and I think that is my favorite subject to teach is reading. I think that is why Cali and justice are probably really smart too because I read to them a lot when they were young, so they are able to pick up on words very well. You are such an intelligent and driven woman, what other projects do you have going on right now or in the near future? Well definitely want you to know about my children’s books. And I just wrapped up the show, which took us a lot of time. I’m back at work, supporting my breast cancer foundation, working with other foundations to get out breast cancer awareness, so my schedule is pretty full. Then I have Jayceon too that I’m trying to work out a situation with, so my plate is full I should say.

When you have free time, what do you like to do? Relax, I like to shop, I like to travel, I like to go eat, go to little lounges with my girlfriends, sometimes I like to just be by myself and be quiet and read, go to the spa, just hang out. You look absolutely fabulous in every episode, from head to toe! Describe your style. Well everyday I’m kind of casual, funky casual, little everyday kind of clothes that I can really get around in well. From the day to day, I have 2 kids so I’m certainly not glammed up every day, but I still like to be cute and stylish. When I go out I glam it up a little bit more, I like to wear pretty dresses, and high heel shoes, It’s fun to get out, away from the kids sometimes, you know get cute and dolled up. What is your favorite hairstyle? My hairstylist Myisha Oliver is always good with coming up with styles for my hair. But I like to wear as a wet set with a loose curls, I like it straight, and I like to wear it natural were I wash it, condition it really good, put a good moisturizer in it and wear it kind of natural too. What are your favorite hair products to use for yourself as well on your kids hair? Well Cali and Justice, I just use Olive Oil on their hair. I put hot oil treatments on Cali’s hair, I even thought about trimming hers a little in. Justice, his dad does the hair care for him. He puts an oil on there just to keep his scalp conditioned. And for me, I actually have 2 stylist, Myisha Oliver, she’s my stylist that has my hair always fabu-
lous. Another stylist who really takes care of my hair and really conditions it well, she has a smoothie bar at her salon, and she mixes up a lot of raw ingredients. And she makes a hair smoothie and she puts that on my hair and lets that sit for about an hour and a half, and washes it out. She just makes your hair gorgeous. So what she puts in there, she won’t tell you. I know its vitamins, I know its minerals, mashes and blends up bananas, and papayas, so it’s a little bit of everything. You make being a working mom so easy. What is one word of advice that you can give to other working mothers? Organized and be disciplined. Be able to follow a routine during the week with the kids so that everything runs smoothly. I almost have everything that the kids are going to need for the week, I try to get that done by Sunday or Monday, so that it just flows better. I think you just have to be organized and have a schedule that the kids are on and stick to it. So that you can do what you need to do and still be able to maintain a good adult life. How can our readers follow you? (Please list websites, social media sites, ect.)

Interview Tell me about yourself. Where are you from and how long have you worked as a fashion designer? I was born in Leavenworth, KS I grew up in Berlin, Germany and Atlanta, Georgia. I have been a fashion designer since the age of 15. When was S. Nicole founded? August 2011 What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is an art that speaks in many languages it defines your sense of style highlighting your persona or characteristics. How long does it take for you to design a piece of clothing and do you sketch your designs or construct them? It takes me anywhere from 3 hours to 2 weeks to construct a design depending on the difficulty of the design esthetics. I sketch sometimes, but being a draper only it’s pointless to sketch. One reason

is how my eye views a design on a dressmaker dummy may not look appealing to me, so I re-construct it until I’m satisfied. Where can our readers purchase S. Nicole? Other Tips For Beautiful Lips Regardless of whether you're after that sexy look or a classy one, healthy lips will be an essential part of looking your best. Using a lip conditioner to help keep them moist is one method which will help keep your lips looking fantastic. Below are 7 more tips for healthy, attractive lips.
1
. Make sure it's natural. Keep in mind that whatever you put on your lips you are also eating. Because of this, it is important to pay attention to what the manufactures have put into the products you're using. As much as possible, you should try to find products which are made out of natural ingredients.
2
. Hydrate from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water isn't only good for your health, it keeps you lips hydrated from inside and keeps them healthy. You want to consume several glasses of water a day, and eat fruits and vegetables which have high water content.
3
. Don't bite or lick your lips. The main reason is because it can cause irritation and drying, but it can also smear your lipstick. Another thing to avoid is putting fingers and pens by or in your mouth. Aside from the hygienic aspect, these things can smear your lipstick and get it onto your teeth.
4
. Protect your lips. Wind and sun can damage your lips causing them to burn, dry out or chap. Applying balm or lip conditioner helps keep them hydrated and guards them from the elements. If you enjoy a lot of time outdoors make sure whatever you are using has SPF 15 or higher to guard from sun damage.
5
. Hydrate your lips at night. Just before going to bed put a lip conditioner on your lips. This will keep them from becoming dry throughout the night as well as help them recover from any damage they www.MidwestBlackHair.com

sustained throughout the day. Sesame oil, Shea butter, or coconut oil are great natural options for moisturizing your lips through the night.
6
. Make use of lip liner. Lip liner helps you look great in a couple of different ways. One way it can help you is by making your lips look plumper or slimmer. You do this by outlining your lips a little bit outside the border of your lips or a little bit inside depending on the look you are after. The second way lip liner helps is by keeping your color in place. An important thing to remember when choosing a lip liner is that it needs to be invisible after you put on your lipstick. 7. Use a little gloss. Lip gloss can add a whole different look and is a wonderful way to brighten up your mouth. It locks in moisture while helping your lips look larger and sexier. For that pouty appearance, dot a little lip gloss just in the center of your lips. There you go, 7 strategies I hope you find useful for keeping your lips looking fresh and healthy. You can learn more about having great lips at our site: Lip Conditioner. Be the envy of all your friends with fuller, sensual lips. Find out how at Lip Moisturizer.
