Kiyah Wright Interview By: Asia Diamond

Innovative... Entrepreneur... and Elegant are a few of the many words that can be used to describe Kiyah Wright. Bringing a breath of fresh air to the hair and beauty industry, this celebrity stylist has the golden hands to make anyone feel beautiful inside and out. Kiyah Wright developed her natural talent at a young age of 14, and has taken it higher and higher ever since. After a life changing meeting with Sean “P.Diddy” Combs, Ms. Wright had the honor or working with Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans, and continued to expand her list of distinguished clients with Tyra Banks, Iman, Brandy, Gabrielle Union, Jenifer Hudson, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, and many more.

How did hair styling start for you? I had an early passion for doing hair. I would sneak girls into my house and do their hair after school. My mom took that as a sign to enroll me in hair school at, Edison Career Center, in Kensington, MD. It all started when you met Sean (Diddy) Combs did you ever think that this is where it would lead you? I had no idea that meeting him would bring me to where I am today. You are a two-time Emmy Award winning celebrity hairstylist, how does that

make you feel? It’s amazing! Honestly, I was dozing off at the awards right before they called my name. I was Shocked, but grateful... and I had already prepared a speech. You are a well known hair stylist and have styled for some of the greatest entertainers in the world, is there someone you would like to style that you haven’t had the opportunity to style for? I would love to style Rihanna - I have not work with her before & I love her edgy style. Now let’s talk about your hair care

The biggest differentiator between my products and other hair stylists is my commitment to provide the highest quality products without sacrificing the effectiveness of the products and the integrity of my consumers’ hair all while considering their pockets. I want every consumer to be able to “Bring The Hollywood Look Home”. I know some hair stylists are known for colors, cuts, weaves- what is your strong suit? I’m best known for my seamless weaves. Yes, Black Nativity. Legendary cast. Great experience.

arik Mallett is a licensed Professional Master Barber also the owner of Dream Cuts Barber Lounge LLC. His high IQ in the cosmetology world has made him a highly skilled craftsman with a celebrity clientele that spans the entertainment industry. At twelve years old, he was kicked out of his neighborhood barber shop after correcting one of its barbers. Undeterred, Tarik took matters into his own hands and purchased his first set of clippers. A move that would eventually shape his life. A scholar from a young age, Tarik attended Aviation High School in New York City, and the FSU/FAMU College of Engineering in Tallahassee, Florida. Feeling unchallenged by these pursuits, Tarik decided to stick with his true love, cutting hair -- a career that would land him job placements in various entertainment circles. Starting in the music industry, he expanded his reach to professional athletes, and finally to Hollywood. Along the way, Tarik has worked with some of his childhood idols including Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Theo James, Jason Weaver, Jacob Latimore, Harrison Ford, Terrence Howard, Harold Perrineau, and Christopher Meloni. One of his favorite projects has been the Jackie Robinson movie, "42" where he had the privilege of barbering for its starring actor, Chadwick Boseman. Above all, Tarik Mallett is a proud husband, father, friend, and the epitome of the neighborhood barber- the guy you need to know!

HEALTH

MWBH Healthy Eating

to Get Lean! Simply put, eating clean means avoiding processed and refined foods, and instead consuming healthy whole foods. 4 Below are basic guidelines for eating clean. *Please check with your doctor before significantly changing your diet. Eat whole foods: Whole foods are foods that have not undergone any processing. The foods you eat on this type of plan are straight from the farm. For example, whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, grass-fed and freerange meats, reduced fat dairy products, unsalted nuts, and seeds. Avoid processed foods: Processed foods are basically any food that has a label, meaning that more than one ingredient was used to make it. You don’t have to eliminate all processed foods (like canned beans, whole grain pasta, or natural cheese), but if you can’t pronounce an ingredient on a label, don’t put that food in your shopping cart. Eliminate refined sugar. This means stay away from 46 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - October 2014

candy bars, sugary cereals, snack cakes, or any other prepackaged junk food. Refined sugar provides nothing but calories, and has no nutritional value. Do not skip meals. By eating 6 small meals throughout the day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 3 snacks), you can help rev up your metabolism and never get so hungry that you feel deprived. Say goodbye to evening binging! Cook homemade meals. Instead of buying prepackaged meals, prepare homemade meals. You don’t have to be Chef [insert your name here] to make delicious meals. Utilize the internet to search for recipes. The more you cook, the better you will get at it. Combine healthy fats or protein with carbohydratess. Do you sometimes still feel hungry after a meal? For the most satisfaction, and so you’ll be less tempted to eat junk food, combine protein with carbs or carbs and healthy fat. This simple act will fuel your body and curb the hunger monster.

M

ineral makeup is becoming the latest trend in the makeup world and women (and some men) are jumping on the bandwagon and replacing their regular makeup routine with mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is being marketed as a more natural beauty product vs the other beauty products on the market. Now I'm not going to go further into if I believe the hype about mineral makeup but I will say I love how it applies. So whether more natural or not I'm going to be sticking to it for at least my foundation routine. With that it brings us to the point of the article. How in the world do you apply the stuff? Simple, continue reading and you will soon find out. Start by gathering everything you will need for your normal makeup routine. This can include: foundation, bronze, blush or warming color, mineral concealer (optional), powder or kabuki brush, concealer brush and a flat-top brush.

Next step: Your face should them be cleaned with a good cleanser and prepped thoroughly. For myself, I'll wash my face apply my moisturizer and sun block. You'll want a bit of moistness for the mineral makeup to stick. Concealer Step: Shake up a little of the mineral concealer or foundation (if you do not have concealer) gently on the lid and use the concealer brush to mix the concealer. After mixing, tap the excess powder from the concealer brush before using it to cover areas that need coverage. Pay attention to your under eye, dark spots, nose base and on blemishes. To achieve an even finish pat then blend out. Foundation Step: Take the powder brush and apply your foundation all over the face. Once the mineral is on your brush, apply the mineral makeup from the jaw area using swirling motions. Apply towards the inside of your face and then cover the mouth area, nose, forehead, eyes and the chin. If more coverage is needed,

use the flat-top brush to gently apply the foundation in a buffing motion. Blush and Bronzer Step: Apply the bronzer or warming color in your preferred method. Some people will apply it as an all over warm to the face while others will use it to contour. Afterwards apply the blush based on your face shape using the powder or a blush brush. Many people will tell you to smile to find the apples of your cheeks, then apply to the apples. This can actually give you a saggy look depending on where your apples are when you are not smiling. Your best bet is to experiment with applying it higher and maybe even blending up to your temple. Or hey maybe you are one of the lucky ones that doesn't look like Droppy Dog when the blush applied to the applies. High five, you go girl!
