G

rammy Award Winner, Singer, Actress, and Mother...LaTavia Roberson can do it all! Starting her career at a young age, she was an original member of the popular girl group, Destiny’s Child, whom stole our hearts with popular albums “Destiny’s Child” and “The Writing’s On The Wall”. She has gone on to star in plays, feature in TV shows, and is now one of the main cast members of R&B Divas ATL.

Most of our readers know you from your successful singing career with Destiny Child…How did you become a member of destiny child? When I was 8 years old my modeling agency sent me out to audition for an all-girl ensemble that was forming in Houston. Out of hundreds, myself and about 7 others made the initial cut. Not only are you known as a signer but you are known as an actress as well. What are some projects you have worked on and which were your favorite? I’ve done a couple plays more recently and some television back in the day as well. One of my favorite television appearances was on the TV show “Smart Guy”. I played myself, but we were so young, it was one of our 1st nationally aired TV sitcom appearances. The whole cast and crew were a ton of fun, the experience was priceless! Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your career? Hmmm... I guess making my family as a whole proud of me was always there. These days however, I’d have to say that my daughter is my GREATEST inspiration. I've never felt driven like this before, she wakes up smiling. That smile alone lights up my life and pushes me to be the best me for her! What do you love most about your career? I guess the opportunity as a whole to experience it! I’m well aware of the life that God has given me! Twists, turns, downs and ups, it’s what He saw fit to bless me with and I take none of it for granted! I love the opportunities to travel, meet people from all over, but most of all the oppor-tunity to share my stories, hoping that God uses me to be of some sort of assistance to someone somewhere!

28 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - August 2014

How did you become a part of R&B DIVAS ATL? I was invited to join the cast for season 2, however I was pregnant at the time. When the offer came back around again for season 3, I figured why not? It felt right, like God was up to something!

What do you love about Dallas Christopher as your hairstylist, what made you want to have him as your stylist? Dallas is a true professional! Beyond that, he is an absolute artist who lives, breathes, dreams hair. He loves what he does to the core of his being and his passion is evident as what really just comes across as a natural ability that he's honed and crafted all his own! Dallas always goes the extra mile, i mean this man pattened a hair color made specifically just for me, like there's no other color out there exactly like what he's made for my hair! Tie all of this in with his efficiency (he usually has me ready on average in 30 minutes and i mean what more could a girl ask for in a hair stylist? Dallas Christopher is a MASTER at his craft! Period. We (Midwest Black Hair) love the highlights as well as your red in your hair they suit you so well. What made you want to add color to your hair? Aww thank you!!! I've always worn the same hair colors, either darks or reds, it was time for something new!! Going blonde was one of those “fingers crossed, close my eyes and jump” sort of decisions. After while I was hooked!! Every time I sat in the chair I was begging to go blonder and blonder lol What is your favorite hairstyle to wear? Tough question!! On off day, out with natural curls, maintenance free is my fave. But when it’s time to dress up, I’d have to probably say, I have this sort of signature bun thing going that Dallas does, or my deliciously long back length tresses in whatever curl pattern the occasion calls for! As a hard working business woman, we know it can be hard at times to keep up with everything when you are on the go 24/7. What key beauty items can you not leave the house without? Usually, a number of glosses for whatever lip I'm wearing that day, my bronzer and blot powder ;) You have came back and made a mark in this industry. Who has inspired you to keep doing what you love to do? Again that prize would have to go to my daughter :)

about

LaTavia What do you like to do when you are not working? Honestly? I really just enjoy being a new mom, my daughter just lights up my world! I love to cook, my mom and I are putting together a creole cookbook now so us spending time working on our recipes! If I could choose anything though, you can definitely find me at the nearest beach! I LOVE the water, the beach might be my favorite place besides being at home! Who is your favorite artist? Thats not fair!! LOL I cant just choose 1 favorite!! Who would you love to meet that you haven’t already? Hmmm... Maybe Nicki Minaj oh & Angela Bassett! For young females who look at you as an idol what advice can you give to them? Well 1st I’d say please devote that energy for God :) But if you do support me, I honestly can’t tell you how much the support drives me! For my young ladies who may have experienced a lot, please don't let your circumstances or experiences define you. You CAN make it past your hurt, your pain or your experiences!! As women we have a capacity and capability beyond even our wildest imaginations. Life is all about choice and perspective, it may take some time and ef-fort, but we have the power to choose to be happy, to look at something and not let it define us,

P

roduct Developer, Educator, and Entrepreneur… Mikal Clay is one of the most talented and insightful professionals in the beauty industry. Known to thousands as “The Hair Doctor”, this chemist and educator from Illinois has trained over 25,000 hair care professionals on product usage, development, and healthy hair care, while also creating the powerful line of hair and body products, Mikal Clay Products. Clay has also taken his knowledge and talents to the radio airwaves, and is a host of “Hair Doctor Radio”.

As a college student studying Bio-Chemistry in college, it has been stated that you focused your efforts on "Changing Lives from the Inside Out through more than Chemistry". Was there something or someone in your life that inspired you to make that your mission? And please share who or what that was. One, I started out as a premed major and after gaining relationship with people I realize that people do die and I wasn’t able to deal with that as a young adult so I moved into biochemistry because I used to make my own lotions colognes and soaps and I always like to be custom have the best things for my body. I think my greatest inspiration was to just have something I call my own that way she help people not just because of this ingredients because of who made it I wanted to be living legacy and says my name was spelled M I K A L it let me know what our own age I was different so I had to do things that were different.

46 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - September 2014

Besides Mikal Clay Hair & Body Products You have made several contributions to the hair and beauty industry while serving in the role as a Chemist. Can you share with us some other projects that you have worked on? I've contributed with Dudley Hair Products and Beauty schools I have them develop and enhance parts for that tail on the relaxer system for the professional line called Bytel Pro I work with Hawaiian silky and other manufacturers I have it work with the company called I am which actually does skincare products so Michael Clay has had his name on many products for the last 15 years.

Known as "The Hair Doctor" from around the world, as well as the host of "Hair Doctor Radio", what has been some major subjects and issues in the hair community that followers have needed help with? Well as the Hair Dr. and on the radio many people were calling asking “what do I use to make my hair grow. There are so many myths that people swear by and so many ingredients that you can make the best salad! This is the major reason for formulating our hair vitamin called VitaStrand. VitaStrand helps people from the inside out it feeds them in order for hair to grow! “What goes in comes out” and people need to know how to deal their hair & body. After that we developed a product to help with circulation of blood to the scalp. You know in the African-American community hypertension is very prevalent, again what goes and comes out therefore we always give people solutions to most of their hair problems. The next question is what do people need for natural hair… and its 3 words… moisture moisture moisture! You must create a healthy environment for hair to grow and just like a plant hair can grow in a very dry environment. When you are not in the role of "The Hair Doctor", what other things do you like to do? When I’m not in the role of being hair doctor my free time I love to play basketball and work out and I have a real undercover love for music I actually DJ, make & produce music. I play musical instruments the guitar, piano, & drums God is truly blessed my hands a young age to be at the great things or to be able to birth things that will come to my mind and make into an actual song or melody. Just like all of the Mikal Clay Products, they have all started off as a dream, a thought, and a vision, that is now birthed into a tangible reality. What made you change the route of being a chemist, to being a chemist and entrepreneur? What made me change from being a chemist to be an entrepreneur that they both go together Chemist make Products and entrepreneurs build companies or promote teams to produce great results…. They are all in the same! What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs embarking on their journey? The advice I will give entrepreneurs on their journey is to never let their questions stop the quest a lot of times on the road to success is not a straight path it is filled with many obstacles many hard times and many great wars but remember you never failing to you quit. Can you tell us about your upcoming projects? Right now we are excited about our newest product call Mikal Clay Meantime Thin Hair Enhancement System. Meantime answers the question to what do I use in the meantime while growing my hair using the Mikal Clay treatment line of products.

The event benefitted the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Arkansas Chapter. TATE ARNONEE FOUNDER & OWNER, SASSY SECRET

58 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - September 2014

T

hree things have always been constant in TATE ARNONEE’s life: her fashionforward style, entrepreneurial spirit, and belief in God. As a child growing up in Zimbabwe, she always had dreams of one day merging her three loves into something bigger. In 2002, equipped with faith and a single suitcase, Tate arrived in the United States ready to begin her college career and take her stab at pursuing the American Dream. Tate attended the university of Missouri and majored in Business Management because when she was still living in Zimbabwe, she always noticed how the country’s unprecedented inflation was causing economic hardships on its citizens and wanted to understand the mechanism behind it all. Though her family struggled to support her financially through college she was still able to graduate on time. She then went on to become a top employee at JP Morgan Chase, serving as an investment adviser for four years. Tate’s childhood entrepreneurial zeal continued to remain constant. She tried several business ideas such as modeling, designing clothes, dabbling in the manufacturing business,

and even selling Mary Kay products. She then found her true passion, the hair industry… and SASSY SECRET , an online shop for high quality Lace Wigs and Hair Extensions, was born Tate’s idea for Sassy came from her reflections on why she had always worn braids and weaves throughout her life. She thought that there must be a better solution to her and other women’s hair challenges. Tate soon discovered the art of lace wigging and started selling her own units on Ebay. She later launched her first website: sassylacewigs.com, which evolved into sassysecret.com. Tate continues to shape Sassy as a quality deliverer of fashionforward hair options for women of color. As the owner and face of the brand, Tate helps women look and feel their best. Her love for the hair industry and hair motivates her to constantly push her brand. 59 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

ospel artist J.LOCKE performed at the 3rd Annual Kansas City Natural Hair Expo, and ministered to hundreds through musical entertainment. Music that moves, Music that teaches, Music that invokes growth. It has been a long time since Hip Hop has inspired and created a movement worthy of conversation. These are only a few things SoundMuzik Group National Recording Artist J.LOCKE’s debut album “YOUNG. FLY.SAVED” has managed to create. With a buzz that covers the entire country as well as the World Wide Web. J.LOCKE has managed to generate quite an interest for himself through his genuine and candid interpretation of the world in which we live. A large part of the reason for this buzz is his first certified break out single So Alive 2. With unlimited crossover appeal and soulful delivery So Alive has proven to be the perfect balance between a man finding his ministry in music. And his ability to touch the masses regardless of race or social background. While others carry fancy and flamboyant names J.LOCKE (born Almar J. Locke) utilizes his given name to the fullest and feels that the music he creates represents self so it’s only right to use his real name. Born In North Carolina J.LOCKE is a part of a different kind of movement. He represents a different kind of artist entirely. Though he is a Hip Hop Artist, he has managed to merge a Gospel message that flows seamlessly. No Cursing, No Violence, No Degrading Women, No Drug References. In fact he goes against everything that a majority of today’s popular hip hop music stands for. Yet he is received and recognized by the very audience that pop culture hip hop artists themselves reach.

MWBH Natural Hair

Interview With Natural Hair Educator & Celebrity Braider

Isis Brantley

By Asia Diamond

www.naturallyisis.com 70 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - September 2014

You have been in the natural hair business for a long time, what made you decide to work on natural hair? Back in the late 70s watching soul train. I loved the braid art, and I started braiding hair and adding beads. The whole Egyptian style braiding. People would ask about it and wanted the same style. My African hair style inspired people. It was compelling and different for me. What I wanted to wear and how I wanted to wear it became a business for me. I know a lot of natural hair stylist do not only work on natural hair, do you only work on natural hair? Why? I only work on African Original Curl Pattern Texture. A lot of people come to me disappointed because I do not work on relaxed hair. If you are coming from a relaxer you have to wait 6 weeks before you can get your hair braided. Your hair is fragile. I will not work on chemically treated hair As a natural hair stylist what is your signature style that you like to do? ISIS Locs is my signature style. I attended a technique class held by Joan Cornwell-(founder and ceo of Sister Locs). Isis locs are tiny strands of hair twisted together. Its about 500 or more locs. The least amount of locs is 300. Nothing less than 300. I attend the technique class because I loved the look. The difference between Isis Locs and Sista locs-Isis Locs will add extension and Sista Locs will not. If you wanted locs but didn't want to cut out your perm Isis Locs could get done. After all you have been through to become a natural hair stylist did you ever think it will come this far? Never. Protesting against braids, jail, movement…… I have counted the amount of women that didn't have a way out and trained them which pushed and motived them to become entrepreneurs. Over two thousand women have been inspired. Everything happened as a blue print, No I never thought I would be here. An advocate mind changer. What can you suggest to keep your natural hair from drying out in the summer?

Hair is like plant life, farm land. You can’t grow lily flowers the same way you grow a rose bush. Plants grow seasonally. When the summer comes around you have to change your diet to a light diet. To much dairy and sugar goes in your blood-folicil-skin all of this is fighting against your natural strands. Summer comes around and you want to eat ice cream and candy, it will not work for you. You have to keep your diet clean to keep you blood clean. You should eat at least 75% of raw fruits and vegetables during the summer. Use home remedies. Use natural oil and mix it with water and spray it on your hair. Rose Mary tea is a good thing to use as well. Over the counter products will not work for your hair. If you look on the label and you cannot pronounce

ance of the store. I eventually became her mentor and she became my daughter. She doesn't allowed anyone else to do braid her hair. When we met we fell in love. It was love at first sight.

or know the meaning of what you are reading you should not use it. There are a lot of things that will dry your hair out in over the counter products.

stream. Think about the journey you are going to take, the life changing experience you are going to have. Becoming natural does not mean cutting off your relaxed hair and slapping on some braids. It means you have to change the way you eat. You have to eat low energy foods. Becoming natural it starts inside out. You have to have the determination to accomplish your goal. Eating for your beauty. -Vandeline- potassium, vitamin E, D ,A…. Full of nutrients -Burdock root- itchy problems. If you have eczema this is good to use. -Spirulina- Green algae food- protein minerals

Are there any products you recommend that can be used to keep natural hair healthy? Sister of Isis products. If you can’t eat your product, do not use your product. What you put in your body you should be able to use. That doesn't go for all food. Eggs aren’t good for you but they are good for your hair. Mayonnaise isn't good for you but it’s a good conditioner for your hair. I see that you are Eryka Badu hair stylist how did that come about? I met Eryka when she was 9 years old. She saw a posting I had outside of the store and told her mom she wanted that style. She was intrigued by the Ambi-

What products do you suggest to Eryka Badus on her hair? Eryka is a product junky. She will use blue magic, vaseline……She is a free spirit, pleaser and giver. But when Isis comes around to do her hair she knows to use Sister of Isis Products. The question I like to ask all our natural hair ladies what advice can you give for someone going natural? Natural- become natural means you are becoming naturally who you are. Your hair follicles are attached to your blood

“Cruise With A Purpose Video Release”

T

he wait is over! The highly anticipated video release for “Cruise With A Purpose” will be in September 2014. Which is very timely for National Alopecia Awareness Month. We are so excited! In addition, we have received numerous positive music reviews from industry critics and producers.

Music Review by Chuck Nyvele~Writer/ Critic for Billboard Magazine

Award-winning doctor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, lecturer and radio/TV personality Dr. Linda Amerson, has added songwriter and singer to her robust roster of accomplishments! As one of the leading Trichologists in the world, she specializes in the study of alopecia (hair loss) and scalp disorder conditions. In addition to offering an exclusive online range of hair and scalp products via Dr. Amerson’s Hair, Scalp and Skin Therapeutic Essentials, LLC, in 1999 she opened L.A.’s Hair and Scalp Clinic, the first Trichology Training Center in the nation. Based in Arlington, Texas, Dr. Amerson serves as Director and Lead Trainer.

with a purpose (happy today, happy today!).”

To help spread the good word about her second CWAP, with scholarships for children- and adult-focused “Cruise With A Purpose” for Alopecia Awareness, Dr. A has released the goodnatured, ultra positive song “Cruize With a Purpose.” Produced by Phazz Clark and featuring the doctor herself singing and rapping, the uptempo breezy track glides along like a ship at sea… as she offers the rhyme: “Enjoy yourself while you’re here, because we’d love to see you all back next year/On the Cruize

The 2014 track follows Dr. Amerson’s song debut two years ago, which she wrote as an icebreaker for the first Cruise With A Purpose. That song went over so well that… how could she resist with a fun follow-up? The scholarship essay winners are Mayaah Peppers and Sanah Jivani. Be sure to check out the accompanying video clip for “Cruize With a Purpose.” And for much more information about Dr. Amerson’s achievements and awards, check out hairandscalpessentials.com.

Sweden Music Producer~Andrea Laserlife

“Dr. A set out to take on a fun and fresh approach in order to spread the word about alopecia: writing a song about it! With a modern and fresh beat, the song unfolds with a catchy vibe, as Linda’s soulful vocals take the spotlight and blend in beautifully.”

Canadian Music Critic~Gukinator

‘Its uplifting especially with the up-beat. The production quality is good. Great track in general and I'm sure people who are affected with alopecia would appreciate the song and it's message.” Check out her information at www.hairandscalpessentials.com 72 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - September 2014

COLOR Tips F

or the professional woman, subtle blonde streaks are the perfect thing to brighten up your look. For the woman with a less traditional or conservative job, she can play with every color in the rainbow. Purple and blue are very hot this season celebrities have been seen everywhere from the red carpet to the beach with these colors.- Tamika Lonon, High Definition Hair Studio Deciding to color your hair can be both exciting and scary. So I have put together a few tips to make the transition easier. 1) Stay away from Do-It-Yourself color. Applying color to the hair is all about chemistry. Consult a trained professional and don't be afraid to ask questions. Color should be done by someone that you can trust, because one mistake and you could easily lose your hair. 2). Start off subtle, you can always do more. Color comes in steps. Know your limitations. 3). You must prepare your hair for color. This means deep conditioning treatments starting at least one month in advance. 4). Make sure to get the hair trimmed before doing color, this keeps the hair from looking brittle and dry. 5). Decide on colors that you can live with. Make sure that your color blends well with your skin tone and eye color. 6)Know what it takes to maintain your new color. Color requires conditioning treatments weekly using shampoos and conditioners that protect against fading. 7). Before you take the big leap into color try a piece of colored weave to see if color is the way to go. It may be safer to just experiment with different colors before making a permanent decision. Tamika Lonon is a highly talented hairstylist who has been in the industry since 1993. She started her salon, High Definition Hair Studio, located in Savannah, GA in June 2008. By January 2009, Tamika was inducted into the 100 plus Black Women of Influence and her salon received two business spotlights. Tamika is known for giving her clients the latest styles and trends.
