DECASTRO FAMILY RACING
Taking Outlaw 10.50 by Storm ED YESSAIAN Now, I’m no expert on marriages, but I have to say that one of the keys to a successful relationship is making sure that you spend plenty of quality time together, appreciate each other’s hobbies, and support each other in all endeavors. It was once said that, “a couple that plays together, stays together”. So, with that being said, I’m pretty sure Andy and Patty Decastro have a long, healthy, happy future ahead of them, while their opponents in Outlaw 10.50 may not be so lucky. Both Andy and Patty had a great 2020 season in Outlaw 10.50, with Andy successfully defending his Fast Street Championship and Patty finishing 3rd out of 21 cars, including her back to back wins in September. And amazingly, both cars are reasonably simple set ups. Andy’s weapon of choice is a 1978 Ford Fairmont that started it’s racing career in New Jersey as a grudge car. Andy and his dad stripped the car down to the shell and did a complete nut and bolt restoration, leaving not a single part untouched. His dad also did all the wiring himself, in his own shop. Andy’s brother Jay chose Ford’s Race Red for the final refinishing chores and the car looks absolutely stunning in person. Local Legend Tommy Boucher machined and assembled the engine, working the Ford 460 over a bit before it was bolted to a Powerglide from Ron Gregoire. Suspension is a mix of UPR and Racecraft that was set up by A1 Racing in Bridgewater, MA. The rear end is a beefed up 8.8 with 35 spline axles, welded tubes, and 4.10’s. This set up has been good for an all out best of 9.70@133mph. Patty’s car started its life as a 1998 Mustang GT with a few minor bolt-on modifications, before she got bit by the racing bug. A new PI 4.6 liter engine was later pulled from a Lincoln Town Car and stuffed with Comp 262 cams then topped with Continu ed N ex t P ag e 6| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

both couldn’t do it without the help and support of our friends and family, my parents, brother Jay, and my nephew Colin who don’t miss a beat or a race “. For the 2021 Andy plans to make one more run in the 10.50 class before he pulls the engine and beefs it up for the 9.50 class. Patty will continue in the 11.50 class but could also make a couple
an Eaton blower. Multi-time Super Pro Champion Ray Knight built Patty an indestructible C4 transmission with the car being fine- tuned by Mike DEZ at DEZ Racing in Seekonk, MA. Front suspension consists of a UPR tubular k-member with coil-overs, while rear suspension is all Team Z goodies. The stock 8.8 rear end was stuffed with a spool and 31 spline axles. Patty has run a best of 11.30@118mph. Both Andy and Patty have an unbelievable passion for racing, but not just the actual driving part. They also truly enjoy the great comradery that comes along with belonging to the New England racing community. According to Andy, “We
appearances in 10.50 with Ed Yessaian’s car, just to give Andy a little scare. Personally, that’s what I’m looking forward to seeing next season, considering I’m 0-3 against Andy myself. If I have to hire someone to take him out, who better than Patty?

mr. supreme t By ROB MAY and MR. SUPREME T ‘If you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team!’ Motorhead found the A-Team van, (a favorite well-known vehicle on the ‘80s TV airwaves 1983 to 1987), in Nashville Tennessee! Rob May relays the story from the owner with photos by Jeff Jenkins. “Hey folks, I’m Mr. Supreme T, and I love to make people happy! I started pitying fools last Halloween as a joke, and it gained a ton of attention because of my likeness of a young Mr. T. At the start of covid, I knew people were going to be down about the state of the world, and I wanted to make people happy. So I decided to go back into my Mr. T look and fully own it just to put a smile on people’s faces. It was an absolute hit! I was going to work as a car salesman everyday with my overalls, camos, and gold chains daily. The amount of smiles produced made me happier than anything! In June of 2020, I decided to pursue being “Mr. Supreme T” full time and see where it goes. With my freedom, I started giving back to the community including doing a toy drive for the boys and girls club of Nashville. Shortly afterwards, I started reaching out looking for a van to complete my persona. Multiple people were called, but there was not much luck in finding one. I recall praying about my decision to continue what I was doing, and shortly after, my prayers were answered. I reached out to a gentleman who had this van for sale. He replied back to me, and he stated that he enjoyed what I was doing for the community. I made him an offer on the A-Team van, and he told me he could not accept my money. In fact, he had been following me on social media for some time and loved what I did. That gentleman is Jeremy Dearringer, and he Continu ed N ex t P ag e 10| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

made me the happiest man alive by donating the van to me. The van was already painted as it sits currently. The only addition I’ve made was adding ‘Mr. Supreme T’ to it. Now I spend my days paying it forward and blowing people’s minds when they see my van rolling around, and even more when they see me in full ‘B.A. Baracus’ form! I love it when a plan comes together!”

HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE By JIM WEICHERDING It probably doesn’t need to be said this year, but it has been a very difficult one for a lot of families. I know that we see all of the negative news stories about struggling families and violence in our streets day in, and day out, and a lot of us feel lost and without real purpose. State Government only talks about their fiscal deficits and glosses over real families trying to stay above water and survive another day. Stimulus packages for real families is what we need right now. Not state government holding on to the lions share, just in case. By the time you read this article, we will have our President Elect and politicians voted into office. We will see if any of them hold true to their promises. I want to let you know that not everything is negative in the world around us and there are good people out there that really care about families and I’m hoping that you are one of them. Toys For Tots toy drives are happening throughout the holiday season and toy drop off boxes are in businesses across the state for toy donations. Anyone can drop off an unwrapped gift at these locations for a needy child and family. A few of those locations that are teaming up with Buckleupallofus child passenger holiday safety campaign this holiday season are as follows: Sandy Motors, I-105.5 FM Classic Rock Radio Station and The Woods Tavern. The band, Street Survivors, is teaming up with Bucky this year and also hosting an online challenge to all of their fans to drop off toys at these locations during the holiday season as well. They have thou12| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

sands of fans and followers. This year, people that drop off toys in drop boxes will also be taking home Bucky child passenger holiday safety themed coloring posters for their kids. So, not only are you helping needy families by dropping off toys, you are also potentially preventing unintentional injuries and saving a life on our roadways during the busy holiday season. The Buckleupallofus and Sandy Motors Toys For Tots toy drive event will be held, Saturday, November, 28th, 2020, from 11am until 3pm at Sandy Motors Auto Dealership located on Sandy Bottom Road in Coventry, Rhode Island. I-105.5 FM classic rock radio station will be broadcasted live during the event and the band Street Survivors, will perform acoustic songs live as well. Buckleupallofus is all about kids and family traffic safety and the band playing acoustic songs live at this Toys For Tots toy drive is named Street Survivors. Coincidence? I think not. It is very important that these needy kids and families receive toys for the holidays during these difficult times and you can help make that happen. Toys For Tots is a great program and they need our support. Especially this year. Buckleupallofus and Toys For Tots toy drop off locations and toy drop off times: Sandy Motors, 118 Sandy Bottom Road, Coventry, Rhode Island, Monday thru Friday, 9am until 5pm and Saturday’s 9am until 3pm.
HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE readers to drop off unwrapped toys at these caring businesses during the holiday season. Toys must be delivered to the tToys For Tots offices for distribution to families across the state no later than December, 11th, 2020, so please drop off your toys early to make sure that they go out to intended kids and families this year. Thank you. Always remember to Buckleupallofus for safety this holiday season.

Rockford Files MI Pontiac
By ROB MAY and JIM MILLER Gold mine found in Grand Rapids, Michigan! In 2014, Jim Miller purchased this ‘Rockford Files’ (1974 to 1980 tv show) inspired 1977 Pontiac Firebird Esprit. “You don’t see too many 1977 Firebird’s around as you do with the more popular Trans Am’s in terms of collector cars.” This one is actually his second ’77 Firebird. “In 1977, I purchased my original 1977 Pontiac Firebird base model as a senior in high school. I drove that car until 1984.” Cars have always been in Jim’s blood. “I always loved going to the dealerships when my dad was buying either a new Buick or Pontiac. He was buying a car when we walked out of Orson E. Coe Pontiac in Grand Rapids and saw the original Firebird that I purchased with money from mowing lawns and working at a local hardware store. We both stopped in our tracks as it was sitting on the side of the dealership. A Buckskin metallic, 1977 Firebird with raised white letter tires and color matching Rally wheels!” Later it was sold to a friend. Jim, in his mid-fifties, started thinking about his first Firebird while watching Overhaulin’. He scoured Craigslist for a couple of years looking for a car in the same color combination - Buckskin Metallic with a Buckskin interior. “One Sunday night in mid-winter, I came across an identical car that looked great. I printed the ad, and while shaking, I headed upstairs to tell my wife that I was going to buy the car. Her 14| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

response was less than enthusiastic! ‘It was just what I needed with two kids in college.’ I called the seller three times that evening and only received a recording on the answering machine. The next day, I was in the office at 7:30am and received a call back. Anthony LaRusso, a car collector, began to tell me about the car and how he picked my number out of the five calls he received about the car. We made the deal over the phone.” “My nephew and his wife were able to help me out as they lived near Anthony in New Jersey. My nephew sent me a text at the time telling me the car was in mint condition. I was shocked, as I really didn’t know what to expect. It took a few days and was able to get a truck lined up, and the car was delivContinu ed N ex t P ag e
ered to my driveway. I was standing in the garage looking at it the morning I received it. My sister stopped by and said, ‘you hit the jackpot!’” The car was purchased new in Southern California by a lady named, Patty Gadbois. She kept the car for many years until she couldn’t drive any longer. It was then shipped to her daughter in Delaware as her husband, Bill Barker has a love for the car. He decided to the sell the car, and it was purchased by Anthony LaRusso. He had the car totally restored but not a frame off restoration. It was painted, new carpet and headliner installed along with extensive engine detailing. “He told me that it’s one of the best driving collector cars he’s ever owned. We stay in touch regularly about the car and have become friends texting regularly. Anthony is a huge Rockford Files fan, and he did a fantastic job with the car before I bought it.”
Jim added a Custom Autosound period correct tuner with Bluetooth and updated the speakers. “I need to listen to my favorite late 70’s and early 80’s music while driving the car! I wanted the car to look like my original 1977 Firebird, so I purchased a second set of rally wheels.” They were blasted, powder coated and painted to the color matching rally wheels. Then he added the raised white letter tires that his original Firebird had at the time. Jim drives the Pontiac around one thousand miles a year during the Spring, Summer and Fall in Michigan. “I keep it licensed year around, so I can get it out and drive it at any time depending on the weather. I find it very relaxing to take to a few car shows and cruises. I am fortunate to have the Gilmore Car Museum approximately forty miles away. The drive to the museum is excellent, and they have weekly cruise-in’s and events on the weekends that are fantastic!” The car is a driver, and it had a high-quality restoration several years ago. “My 1977 Pontiac Firebird Esprit runs and drives like it was a new car. The great feature about the car is that it’s a ‘Rockford Files’ tribute car. There are only a few of them around the country, and I enjoy the camaraderie from people with the similar car.” CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

M otorhead M agazi ne M ourns the L oss of R obert A. B ucci Robert A. Bucci, 64, passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2020. He was the loving husband of Dorice (Gendreau) Bucci for 42 years. Born in Providence, Robert was the son of the late Albert E. and Gloria C. (Carlotti) Bucci and son in law of the late Dr. Alvin G. and Therese M. (Theriault) Gendreau. Robert attended Blessed Sacrament School, LaSalle Academy and Providence College. He was a successful entrepreneur and then joined Prudential Insurance in 1976, as his father had done years prior. In 1987, he established A. R. Bucci Insurance Agency in North Providence with his brother Jeffrey, and in the 1990s also worked with Metropolitan Insurance. He was an avid golfer all his life, a member of Crestwood Country Club, Metacomet Country Club and later Pleasant Valley Country Club. When he was not golfing, he enjoyed collecting vintage golf clubs, especially Wilson Putters. Robert, like many, had a passion for automobiles. Since childhood, he was a collector and builder of automobile model kits and slot cars, and also owned many unique automobiles throughout the course of his life. He was a loving and devoted father and always worked hard to support his family, making sure that they always had what they needed. He had an enormous heart, giving personality and was always willing to offer help or advice
to a friend in need. An excellent cook, Robert always made sure to carry on important family traditions – weekly Sunday dinner and the Christmas Eve celebration of “La Vigilia. Besides his wife, Robert is survived by two sons, Michael R. Bucci and Thomas M. Bucci of Providence, a brother, A. Jeffrey Bucci of Cranston and many inlaws, cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends, but never forgotten. Funeral and burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The San Miguel School of Providence or a charity of your choice. A memorial service or celebration will be held at a future date to be determined and notification will be given. Until that time, we invite any of Bob’s family, relatives, friends, clients, associates, etc. to offer their condolences at his gravesite at Saint Ann’s Cemetery in Cranston, RI (Section P, Lot 189) beginning from October 31 forward. Regardless of your stance on the current situation, we ask that you please respect and follow all travel restriction guidelines and any cemetery operating hours, rules for visiting and social distancing. This is a difficult time for us all and it is understood that people may need to delay their visit until future dates. For those in this situation, we know Bob will hear your thoughts and prayers. To everyone that knew Bob, thank you for being a part of his life and our family. We hope to see you all in the future. THIS CAR IS UNDER ATTACK. THE WATER IN YOUR COOLANT IS RUTHLESS.
Fight boilover and corrosion with the only waterless coolant. The water in your coolant is your engine’s worst enemy. It lurks in your engine’s cooling system, waiting to boil, expand and build pressure. Causing boilover, bursting hoses and corroding your engine’s components. That’s why Evans is 100% waterless.

“‘TIS NOT THE CRUISIN’ SEASON” By JIM WEICHERDING Let me start out by writing that I have been attending Classic Car and Truck Shows along with Cruise Nights for more than two decades. This Cruisin’ Season and year, was a bust! It was one of the worst Cruisin’ Seasons due to Covid-19 I have ever seen. And, the Cruisin’ Season year before this one ranked second worst year because all it did was rain, and rain, and rain, and rain for months. This year, no rain at all. Just Covid-19. But, that kept most people home until early July under a Stay At Home Order by the state. Even then, July was not seeing any larger crowds allowed to congregate and that wasn’t allowed until late August and September. But then, it was
On the other hand, our diehard DJ at Frederickson Farms Plaza was Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer. He is a close friend of mine and when he makes up his mind to do something he sees it through. If he didn’t, we would not have had much of anything going on with the classic car and truck hobby and lifestyle. I was still able to pass out Motorhead Magazines and a lot of my Bucky Child Passenger Safety Take Home Coloring Posters and Merchandise to kids and adults. Howie and his wife Brenda, owners of Frederickson Farms Plaza, should be thanked for that as well. If it wasn’t for those two owners then I don’t think any of us would have had many places to go with our Show Vehicles every week. People came from all over. Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts license plates were displayed on multiple show vehicles as well as spectators vehicles. The lot was full early and plenty of people enjoyed the automotive venue along with visiting the popular stove shop and candy store, cafe restaurant with ice cream stand and pizza parlor in this very busy plaza. But then again, this plaza has owners that know what community is all about. They not only host weekly cruise nights and car shows, they also host weekly live bands and concerts, variety of arts and crafts marketplace venues and other attractions that really packs in a crowd. All other plazas should follow Howie and Brenda’s formula for success by adopting their community based events, venues and marketplace strategies too. Frederickson Farms Plaza parking lot is always full of customers and there is a good reason for that: “Community”. Personally, I cannot wait until next Cruisin’ Season and attending as many Classic Car and Truck Shows and Cruise Nights as humanly possible. I average 100 or more of these vehicle featured events each and every year. Let’s hope next year is the year we all Cruise back to normal. Photos depict the Outlaw Run Calvacade of Classic Cars Benefit Cruise gathering at the Bronco’s Plaza located in Burrillville, Rhode Island on Route 102. See you there next Memorial Day Weekend!
We Build Custom Sheds only small groups allowed and everyone was required to wear protective face masks and stay at least six feet apart from others at all times. Some of us found a way to get creative within the classic car and truck event hobby and hosted vehicle parades and road cruises but those were far and few in between. I know, I hosted one of those events myself to help raise money to feed needy families and help pay their utilities in the rural community of Burrillville, Rhode Island for the non-profit, Between The Cracks Organization on Memorial Day Weekend in May. More than 150 Show Vehicles attended and everyone wore protective face masks and kept a safe distance apart. The support was fantastic and I am planning on hosting another venue just like this one again next Memorial Day Weekend and every Memorial Day Weekend after that to help support this Burrillville non-profit organization for many years to come. We did have some sporadic classic car and truck shows this past summer but they were smaller than usual and turnouts were minimal. Covid had a lot of people just staying at home and around the house instead of venturing out to events like this one. Many, many, classic car and truck shows along with weekly cruise nights were simply cancelled for the entire Cruisin’ Season and postponed until the spring of 2021. Hopefully, Covid will be controlled by vaccines and our lives can go back to normal again next year. Face masks might be the new normal for at least another year according to medical experts but that’s a small price to pay to rejoin life on the move attending cruise nights and classic car and truck shows and not staying put in our homes and back yards for another summer season.

We did have some great weekly cruise nights in some locations this past summer and early fall like the ones hosted at Frederickson Farms Plaza in North Scituate, Rhode Island every week but there weren’t many. Some DJ’s just called it a season early on and that’s their call. I’m all for personal decisions that help keep people safer. Safety first, I always say.

By TOM McCARTHY On Saturday morning, 10 October, 2020, the sun rise early was wonderful and temps were on the rise sharply from 40’s at 11PM Friday night, to near 54 degrees by 9AM Saturday morning. Bright sunshine was on point and it was a great day to go racing at New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping, NH. Coming into this race, Roy Resendes of NH was leading the Fast By Gast Top Bike championship points series with 243 points amassed to date. Right behind Roy was multi time track champion Ed Hughes and Gary Russell, also a former NED T/B champ; ready to be the spoiler. Any one of these three racers had a chance to lock up the championship if conditions were right. So the question was put to the racers, prior to qualifying, “How do you feel about your chances at winning the track championship this year?”

Roy Resendes replied “I like my chances to repeat again as track champion. I am always optimistic about everything. There are a lot of good racers here: I’m just one of them.” Ed Hughes commented before competition started “If there were more bikes and we had five rounds of racing ahead today, I could win it. But if less than 16 bikes, with four rounds of racing, that’s not in my favor.”Gary Russell stated “What needs to happen for me to win the championship today would be, if they have a bad day and I have a good day, I can still win this.” When racing commenced, thirteen contestants thundered down the dragway 1320 foot surface duringQ-1. The number one provisional qualifier was Mike Vizzo, of Shrewsbury Mass, with a .009 reaction time. The “RT” is used as the qualifying position most commonly in sportsman bracket racing, so Mike’s .009 was the quickest RT to the green starting light that morning.

times) vary from 9.90’s to well into the 7 second zone. During Q-2, the second and final round of qualifying for this day’s Fast By Gast T/B race, no one improved over Mike Vizzo’s initial qualifying shot, his .009 RT stood as #1 qualifier. This is unusual for NED T/B. Normally an .003 or better is top qualifier. This gave Mike the bye-run during E-1 and the parings for first round eliminations became: Kevin Mathews Vs Steve Kady, Mark Hendrick Vs Ed Hughes, Dave Ducharme vs Tom Peterson, Civi Vs Roy Resendes, Tom Galligan vs Gary Russell and Sam Hurwitz Vs Scott McNickle. During qualifying, Roy Resendes having a .043 light ahead of Ed Hughes (.058) and Gary Russell’s .065, made him a lower qualifier and this padded his points lead going into the final round of competition for the 2020 season, assuring him his second consecutive Top Bike championship in as many years.

During E-1, first round eliminations, Mike Vizzo, with the bye run in hand laid down a 8.06 with an 8.0 dial in coupled with an .004 RT to announce he was ready for anyone and anything when E-2 happens. Steve Kady advanced on a Kevin Mathews break out, Ed Hughes spun bad on the 1-2 shift, ending his championship hopes as Mark Hendrick motored on for his win this round. Dave Ducharme won a great drag race against Tom Peterson, Dave went 9.29 on his 9.23 dial, while Tom went 8.00 on his 7.92 prediction. John Civtarese, aka “Civi” broke and sent Roy Resendes on a competition solo that wrapped up the championship for the Roy Resendes, Bob Thompson tuned bike. Top Bike championship contender Gary Russell, who never goes down without a fight, won his round against Tom Galligan, and Sammy Hurwitz went red against Scott McNickle who advanced and to meet Gary Russell in E-2.

As the second round of eliminations unfolded, Mike Vizzo took out Steve Kady, with his 8.03 as Steve registered a 8.67. Mark Hendrick broke out against Dave Ducharme sending Dave on to the semi-final round. Roy Resendes earned a bye run and logged in with an 7.89 on his 7.86 prediction and Gary Russell, eliminated S. McNickel with a 9.08 pass. The semi’s were a sight to behold with Mike Vizzo clearly on a rampage today and Roy Resendes taking on Gary Russell as the two Top Bike championship contenders. In the semi-final round, Dave Ducharme was ready to get out on Mike Vizzo, knowing he needed a starting line advantage for a chance at beating Mike. Dave was a little too ready for Mike with a .039 red light sending Mike to the
final. The other semi-final round clash, Gary Russel Vs Roy Resendes, was a verification of Roy’s championship winning season as Roy beat Gary handily and without question clinched the 2020 Fast By Gast Top Bike season championship with 288 points to 238 points respectively. But with one more round to go, the race was not over yet. When Roy & Mike lined up in the afternoon waning light, it was all eyes on the starting line. Roy and Mike left side, by side, by this was Mike Vizzo’s day to shine and he crushed his opposition on the tree all day, every round.

3 OCTOBER 2020 MOTORCYCLE MA
TOM McCARTHY
On Saturday, October 3rd, 2020, the annual New England Dragway Motorcycle Masters event was held at New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping, NH. The Masters, which has been running since 2013, is an annual race to establish who is the best from the best of the previous year’s points racers at NED. So this year’s crop of contestants was a who’s who of the winners and elite from 2019 competition. Last year, the points class winners with the bike/sled crowd were: MC/Sled winner Tom Peterson, R/U John Civitarese, Top Bike winner Roy Resendes, R/U Ed Hughes, and Street Fighter winner Tony Ficher, R/U Scott Levasseur. These six contestants made up the core of competition for the eight bike ladder. To round out and fill the two remaining slots, the racers from last year’s points classes voted on who should fill in the ladder and compete against the very best. The MC racers from 2019 voted in Sam Hurwitz and Tom Galligan to make it a full eight bike field. Photographic support for this match up was provided by Mark LaBranche Photography. The racers were in line at NED at the pit gate bright and early Saturday morning and the New England Dragway staff opened the gates at 8AM to greet the racers. The Motorcycle Masters racers are honored guests for the annual Masters event and normally enter free as a thank you by New England Dragway for their year after year commitment to the NED points series racing. From 2013 through 2019 Masters racers have always entered the gates fee on this day – but now that Masters racing is being integrated into points racing days, effective this race, any racer entering for Masters racing, if they are also in class racing competition for their respective points class; standard racing entry fees apply. Any racer in the Masters, if their eliminator is racing same day, their runs during Masters E-1 and E-2 will count as their Q-1 & Q-2 for their class qualifying runs, as their reaction times are applied to their class. After lunch break, they will join into E-1 for their class and re-join Masters competition when defeated from their eliminator.
E d H ughes
For this race, the racers drew their fellow competition by random drawing to establish the ladder, then a coin toss determined lane choice. The E-1 pairings began with new Masters contestant Roy Resendes choosing Sam
Hurwitz to begin the first pair. Then Sammy drew Tom Peterson for his round one opponent. Tommy drew Civi to start the next pairing and Civi drew Tony Ficher as his opponent. Tony drew Tommy Galligan to set up the next pair and Tommy spun the Drum of Destiny and he drew the name of Ed Hughes. Eddie drew the next name, which was Roy Resendes and this matched up Roy and Scottie Levasseur as the final pair. No time trials are allowed for Masters racing, they come out swinging stone cold. So E-1 began with Sam Hurwitz and Tom Peterson lined up. It was a great drag race to the stripe with Tom Peterson breaking out just a touch before Sam, sending Mr. Hurwitz on to the next round. John Civitarese, who won last year’s Masters race, lit the red-eye against Tony Ficher and Tommy Galligan also found the red-light against Ed Hughes, as both Tony & Eddie advanced to the semi’s. In the last pair of E-1, Scottie got out on Roy Resendes, but he spun badly as Roy vaulted past him, but Roy’s bike quickly faltered and Scott Levasseur snapped the throttle open again briskly, shooting past the slowing Suzuki of Roy Resendes, who broke on that pass. As eight bikes now became four, the semi final round was a powerhouse of track champions. Sam Hurwitz Vs Tony Ficher and Ed Hughes Vs Scottie Levasseur. Scott Levasseur is the most feared racer in Masters competition and rightfully so – he just has a knack for winning. Going into this event, there are seven names engraved onto the 48 name tags of the Stanly Cup of Mo-

MASTERS: ED HUGHES VICTORIOUS .081, but as soon as Scott left the starting line, he spun badly again a second time and Ed Hughes was gone like a canon shot. This set up the final round of Ed Hughes & Tony Ficher. Ed Hughes has been in all of the Motorcycle Masters competition events since 2013. He’s attended every one and has been in the finals once before, but never won the Masters. Tony Ficher has also been in the finals – back in 2013, he was the finalist against Scott Levasseur, when Scottie won the very first Masters event. So no matter who won the Masters today, a new name tag with a new name was headed for the trophy.

torcycle drag racing. FOUR of the names tags carry his name - he’s a beast! E-2 began with a phenomenal match up by Sam Hurwitz and Tony Ficher. They were so close going down the 1320, it was impossible to tell who won without the win light, which came on in Tony’s lane. A double breakout pass was decided at the timers, with Sam going -58 under and Tony going -50m, MOV for Tony by .0084 seconds! When the next pair lined up, with Ed Hughes and Scottie going at it, all eyes were on these guys. Scott Levasseur had the better RT with a .070 to Ed’s
The Masters racers saved the best for the last as Tony and Eddie left on cue like a shot. Ed dialed 8.82 and Tony dialed 8.92 and Tony ran 8.92, right on his dial and LOST! Ed drilled Tony on the tree with a stellar .002 RT to Tony’s .061 giving Ed a MOV by .0422 seconds. I have seen Ed Hughes win many races in the decades I’ve known him. But I’ve never seen him happier than I saw him today with this win – close to eight years in the making. Special thanks to the New England Dragway staff, they were impeccable today, from the gate keepers, to the Credentials building, Tech and of course the track and tower staff : you all made our race a great race and a safe one. THANK YOU! Tom McCarthy Tony F icher and son

am Eort ROB and GEORGINA MAY Celebrating over three years contributing to Motorhead magazine monthly, we look back at a pair of 1969 cars and the May family from Lompoc, California. Georgina Garcia May Photography highlights their Pony and Cat. Initially, focus was placed upon Mercury Cougar articles as all body style generations 1967 to 1997 were featured in continuous monthly articles. Then the May family branched out to cover multiple Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury cars. Along the way an AMX snuck into the mix. Various car clubs were featured including the Central California Mercury Club CCMC. CCMC was shown in a previous issue supporting Cruises for Causes in 2020. California is their home base (for now); however, they have contributed articles from all over the United States and Canada. and find feature vehicles to highlight every month. Initially, one or two a month were published, now they submit more while the car shows seemed to have sadly dwindled. CCMC was tired of waiting in 2020, so they hosted an “Orphan” car show on Saturday Oct 10th aligning with an AMC club for promoting car companies that no longer exist. They are so far the ONLY car show to be held in 2020 in Central California becoming the ONLY AMC or Mercury show in California in 2020!! Photo hints from Georgina May: It is easy to take photos, and no they don’t have to be pro taken. Cellphone pics are fine. Let’s keep them 1.5M (1500kb) or larger please. No need to get into resolution math details. Typically, any camera or cellphone can take the needed sized pics. Always select original or large sized when the email, cellphone, or camera asks. NO, Facebook is NOT the proper place to store your photos as they tend to crunch them down to postage stamp size once in print. Your vehicle is highlighted best when alone in the photo (models allowed of course). Neat backgrounds are nice. However, a plain park or even alone in a parking lot works too. Interior, exterior, under hood, trunk, wheels, photos showing multiple sides at once,
emblems, and unique features are all great photos. Themes are often present in the articles composed. Light Blue Mercury cars is a trend in many articles. This reflects Rob’s passion for his first car – his 1969 Mercury Cougar (e color code Light Aqua – the original color) owned since 1986. Remember the best shows on TV?? They are on a 1970s and 1980s television show vehicle theme before they move onto movie cars! (They snuck in a 60s Green Hornet)! Starsky & Hutch, Knight Rider, The Fall Guy, and the Dukes of Hazzard (General Lee) have been covered. This month they submitted The A-Team and The Rockford Files. For December, they are working on Emergency!. What more surprises are in store for 2021?? 36| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

RETURN OF By JIM SUVA and ROB MAY In 1974, a new TV series aired, called “The Rockford Files” starring James Garner. Mr. Garner’s character, Jim Rockford, drove a Pontiac Firebird Esprit. Jim Suva of Westchester, IL. fell in love with that car immediately. He purchased a used 1974 Firebird Esprit that was gold and had a black interior. (Rockford drove a gold and tan interior version.) Jim only kept that car one year before he sold it. The Rockford Files went through Firebirds from 1974 through the 1978 model year. In similar fashion, Jim had always wanted to buy another one over the years. Fast forward to November 2002. “I was looking for a used car for myself and found a 1977 Firebird Esprit on the internet. It was gold with a replaced, and a correct AM/FM radio with two rear speakers was added. “Of course, I have done some regular maintenance like, brakes, heater core, water pump and transmission service.” The Firebird has a 305 engine with power steering and brakes. It also has air conditioning and a tilt steering column with a gold Formula steering wheel. These are the only options on the car. “I used the Firebird as a daily driver for about 11months.” It is now retired as an antique vehicle with just over 72,000 miles on it. It sports the same license plate number 853 OKG that was Jim Rockford’s on the TV show. “I have shown the Firebird at a number car shows over the years and it is received very well. In fact, in 2010, my Firebird
tan interior.” The Firebird only had 63,000 miles on it. It was in great survivor shape. “I am the 5th owner of the car.” The Firebird was purchased new in 1977 in Oregon to a lady around 50 years old who gave the car to her minister’s wife in the late 80’s. The minister’s wife kept it for a number of years and sold it to another gentleman around 2000. In March of 2002, that gentleman sold the Firebird to Mike in Rhode Island. Mike sold it to me. What is nice about this Firebird is that it has only been owned by people over 45 years old, so it has not been abused.” Once Jim bought the Firebird, he contacted Pontiac Historic Service for a copy of the original build sheet. The Firebird was built in Ohio and shipped to a dealer in Oregon. “The car had a rear spoiler originally, and a stripe, which I believe was removed at the dealership. It also had wire wheels, which Mike switched out with a set of Rally 2 wheels to make the car look like the Rockford Files car.” Since purchasing the Firebird, the wheel well chrome all around was
was featured on the Crime Drama episode of the television series “Pioneers of Television”. I drove it as Jim Rockford, as James Garner and producer/writer Stephen J. Cannell talked about James Garner’s stunt driving abilities.” As it turned out this was the last on camera interview that both Garner and Cannell every did on The Rockford Files. The visors have been signed by James Garner as well as a number of cast and crew members of The Rockford Files. “One of the greatest feelings for me is driving my Firebird. It brings me back in time to the 1970’s, which was a much simpler time.” CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

CHASE DOWLING POCKETS $10K PRIZE IN CALL BEFORE YOU DIG MODIFIED CLASSIC By SOUZA MEDIA/KYLE SOUZA STAFFORD, Conn. — Chase Dowling took the home-track advantage to Victory Lane in the Call Before You Dig (CBYD) Modified Classic 81 at Stafford Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Dowling, the driver of the No. S&S Asphalt Paving machine owned by Ben Dodge, rolled to a dominant win in the inaugural Tri Track Open Modified Series race at the Connecticut half-mile. The race win came with a smooth $10,000 check courtesy of CBYD and Tri Track — just a small portion of a purse that was over $58,000. Thirty-two cars started the race, while 51 Modifieds showed up in the pit area to attempt to qualify. It was the largest, and most talented, Modified field seen in a race in multiple decades of racing. Dowling took the lead on lap 12, led through lap 30 when he pitted during a controlled caution, then blasted back to the front to take the top spot for the final time on lap 39. He would hold off Matt Hirschman on multiple restarts in the second half of the race to win. While Dowling celebrated the victory, Hirschman clinched his fifth career Tri Track title driving the No. 60 Modified. Ronnie Williams made a late charge to finish second, followed by Hirschman, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Justin Bonsignore, who made his 2020 Tri Track debut, and Matt Swanson. The major wreck of the race happened off turn two on lap 30, just after the cycle of controlled caution pit stops. After Doug Coby had a mechanical failure at the green flag and stacked up the outside lane, multiple cars wrecked, drawing a caution in turn one. It was in turn two where most of the carnage happened — with Woody Pitkat ending up halfway up the wall on his side. Pitkat, Jon McKennedy, Dave Sapienza and others escaped without injury, but were sidelined for the rest of the race. After staying out early, NASCAR Cup Series star Ryan Preece elected to pit during a lap 39 caution, but was collected in a multiple-car wreck in 42| Motorhead Magazine - November 2020

turn three, ending his chances. The race came down to Dowling charging through and pulling away, while Williams, Hirschman and others tried to chase him down. Richard Savary finished sixth, followed by Les Hinckley, Todd Owen, Ron Silk and Burt Myers, who started from the pole. Outside of the winning purse, and the 32-car starting field worth of prizes, which included $1,000 just to take the green flag, multiple drivers also increased their payday by winning contingency awards. One of the highlights was Owen, picking up the $1,000 Green Construction Hard Charger award after having to take a promoter’s option into the race and start last. A full list of contingency winners is below. Noah Korner was victorious in the 25-lap B-Main, advancing to the race along with Dylan Izzo, who finished second. Of the cars that went home, Blake Barney, who finished third in the B-Main, collected $1,050 even though he didn’t qualify. All cars in attendance at Stafford were provided at least $300 in awards for attempting to qualify. Tri Track Contingency Awards, Stafford, October 24: Green Construction Hard Charger ($1,000): Todd Owen Stone’s Performance & Parts Fastest Lap Award ($300): Chase Dowling Pepsi Challenge Heat Winners ($300 each): Chase Dowling, Ryan Preece, Keith Rocco, Burt Myers, Ronnie Williams Pepsi Challenge Consi Winners ($300 each): Eric Goodale, Marcello Rufrano TFR Hard Luck Award ($500 Gift Certificate to TFR): Woody Pitkat (Car Owner: Stan Mertz) The Tri Track Open Modified Series will release details about the 2021 season schedule in the near future. Street F New England Dragway Crowns a 2020 Champion By XANDER YESSAIAN As the 2020 race season got underway, no one had any idea what to expect as far as car/bike counts, safety guidelines, or general changes in the way we live life. But with a little extra effort and some amazing people behind the scenes, the season persevered with phenomenal attendance in some classes, including the Street Fighter motorcycle class, which I have become a huge fan and follower of. This class is run by the “Power Couple” Keith and Laurie Correia, who put in an extraordinary amount of their own personal time to pull it off. Also keep in mind that Keith is running his own bike in the class, in between keeping order throughout the day. Both Keith and Laurie mentioned that one of the keys to success in the class is the tremendous support from the growing number of sponsors, all of who stepped up big time this year to grow the class to a whole new level, with over 20 bikes per race!! She’s Back! : The 2015 Z28
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first
was produced, but it also brought with it a whole new version of retro-fitted power. This new version of the original bad boy holds a whopping 7.0 V8 engine (firing off at 505 horsepower and 481 foot pounds of torque) that is pulled forward by a six speed TREMEC TR6060 transmission and a rear wheel drive high performance TORSEN helical limited-slip differential. Braking power is far from obsolete with Brembo carbon-ceramic performance
four wheel anti-lock disc brakes and there are Multimatic DSSV dampers. A dual-mode performance exhaust gives the car a nice rumble but will surely not cause any headaches. The car is lubricated by a dry sump oiling system and has a standard track-designed cooling system that is liquid to liquid between the oil lubrication, the transmission, and differential. The chassis is rolled off by nineteen inch forged aluminum wheels with high performance Pirelli PZeroTrofeo R “summer only” tires.

LIGHT BLUE MERCURYS AND FORD IN PA By ROB MAY and ANDREW MOWEN We all know Rob May loves Light Blue Mercury cars! Now he found an owner, Andrew Mowen, in Port Matilda, PA with two Mercurys following that theme. Andrews’ dad, siblings, and other family members were always Ford people. His dad and cousin drag raced Falcon Sprints, Mustangs, and Torino CJs back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s. “My first car back in 1986 was a 1971 Mercury Montego F-code – really it was my Mom’s and was the “driver education” car for about 5 of my siblings and me…it was pretty beat up by the time we all got done with it.” That car is where he started his love of Mercury Montegos. “I was always fond of the W-noses (Bunkie-Beaks as they called them after the GM turned Ford Exec who brought the styling cues from Oldsmobile) – David Pearson won a lot of NASCAR races with the Wood Brothers driving that 1971 Cyclone version of the W-nose.” While he always wanted to have another 1971 Mercury Montego, his wife was not a big fan of the styling. “So I went with an earlier model year and have not regretted that decision. Both of my Light Aqua cars are 1969 Montego MX models with Black Vinyl tops. The two door has black bucket seat interior and console with a 351W 2V. The four door has an aqua bench seat interior with a 351W 4V.” Andrew bought the two-door from Mike Kline as his first collector and cruising car back in 1996. “Since then, many people helped me with the car, parts, etc. along the way. Due to a new job and new life priorities, I sold that car in 2004. I regretted that particular decision about a year or so later and then tried to find it online (off and on) for about 14 years until my brother spotted it for sale on Facebook Marketplace in 2018.” The car had changed hands over a couple owners, but was only two hours away from him and an easy drive to visit and see it again after all those years. “I bought my car back (for a higher price than I sold it!) and did little things to it to bring it into service for pleasure drives/cruise-ins. It’s like having an old friend (and a piece of my history) back, and I do not plan on selling it again.” Interior is all original, paint is mostly original… not too many 69 Montegos with bucket seats (trim code 65E) and consoles…Only 13 built with the Light Aqua paint and that trim code. The car has about 120,000 miles on it and will be undergoing an engine refresh next year. “I’ve always wanted a set of Mercury Styled Steel wheels for that but could not afford them when I first owned the car in my 20’s. When I bought it back, I was able to get reproduction wheels, powdercoated them, and put them on the car for a more sporty look.” With regard to the four-door Montego MX, Andrew just purchased it this past summer. “I saw it was going to be for sale at a nearby antique car auction and, given the Light Aqua color and Black Vinyl Top, I decided I needed to bid on it as a match to my two-door. It was my first experience bidding and was a thrill to win the bid at a reasonable price (that last part kept my wife, Cindy, very happy and I consider the four-door hers as she drives it when we take both Mercurys to car shows/cruise-ins).”
The four-door is an all original survivor car with 35,000 miles. The first owner bought the car for his wife in 1969. They took a cross-country trip from their New York home to the Coast of Oregon. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1973. He parked the car in 1974 with 32,000 miles on it and never drove it again (it still has an original New York inspection/license sticker from 1974 on the windshield). This gentleman passed away in 2009, leaving the car to his estate. The car remained in storage until purchased from his estate by a collector in 2011. “It was brought back into service (i.e., new brakes, exhaust, tires, tune-up, carb rebuild, fluid changes), and I bought it from this collector during that auction July 2020.” “Special thanks to my brother, Brian Mowen, Charlie Booze, Jr., David Rice, Jr., and Mike Kline for helping with that two-door Montego over the years. Special thanks to my brother, Dan Mowen for finding my lost two-door for me and to Dallas Hoover for selling it back to me. Charlie and Mike, in particular, took a road trip to Colorado in 1996 to pick up a car and to get parts for my two-door. My brother Brian also bought me a re-chromed rear bumper for it in 1996 as a wedding gift for us (they are different from Cyclones) – I’d image it was pretty rare to see a re-chromed Montego bumper for sale at Ford Carlisle back in those days. All of these pieces are still on the car and are part of its story.” “I drive these cars about once every two weeks during the summer and keep them in hibernation over the winter – they are a pleasure to drive and have a nice V-8 sound through the dual exhausts.” The Montego is a relatively unknown model in today’s car culture (although you can find good examples in movies such as Dog Day Afternoon and during the beginning credits of Police Squad). The fact they are uncommon is part of their appeal…”The most unique attributes of both these cars are the color combos, their originality (Light Aqua, Black Vinyl Top), and that they are sitting beside one another in my garage. At car shows, some people have asked me if I painted the two cars to match (to have his and hers matching set), and they are surprised to find out that they were painted/optioned that way from the factory!” CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

The 3 P’s for Appraisals What are the three P’s of appraisals? Pre-purchase, pre-sale and pre-storage - all are critical to protecting your investment! Let’s talk this month on what they are and how they are important to protecting your investment. Beginning with the Pre-Purchase appraisal, Classic Auto Appraisal offers a pre-purchase service where you can get a fresh set of professional eyes on a vehicle you are considering purchasing before you write the check, it is so easy to set up! This service is extremely beneficial to a couple of different buyer types, emotional and absentee. If you are an emotional buyer looking at the car you’ve always dreamed of owning, and you’ve think you have found the perfect one, did you? Or are you excited you found one in your budget? Call us, give us the name of the seller and phone number, we will reach out and set up the appraisal. We will look over the condition of the car with a set of unbiased eyes, after taking hundreds of photos and notes we will prepare a document for you alerting you to any issues we find as well as what a fair market value is, allowing you to negotiate better and have documentation to steer the conversation so that you may buy based on facts and not emotions. The second buyer is what we refer to as an absentee buyer, who lives hours away from a car you found online and talked to the seller for hours. You really think this car is the one, but you do not want to make an offer on a car you haven’t seen, or drive hours each way for a lemon? This is the perfect time to book a pre-appraisal and have us do that initial look for you! Are you thinking about selling your car, let’s talk about the pre-sale appraisal. Most of us who have own our cars for any period of time are attached to them, this can easily cloud our vision of their true value. As way to make sure you are covered if a insurance claim needs to be made then to have an up to date appraisal, what better time than before you store your car to show the most current information? Cars are being bought and sold daily, our consignments have been flying out the door! Please give us a call if we can be of service to you, or check us out on Facebook or Instagram to see our current list of inventory, including a 1963 Split Window Corvette, a 1974 Pantera, a 1973 Convertible 4 speed Corvette and a 1966 GTO! Cya Cruising, Jed
mentioned in the pre-purchase appraisals above, the process mimics those steps, we would take hundreds of pictures of your car and research the current market to make sure you had the most up to date information so that you are informed of a fair price to sell your vehicle. This can also greatly help you when negotiating to have documentation on your value. The last P is Pre-Storage. The majority of owners keep their cars for years, some for decades, and in my area of the country this means winter storage. There are many risk associated with storage, including everything from a jack stand giving out and causing damage as the vehicle falls (thank you Harbor Freight), to electrical fires, mice damage or the worst of all, snow loads causing issues to structures. There is no single better CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

BOB LAVALLEE’S 56 CHEVY By JIM WEICHERDING
around during the Cruisin ’ season every year. It’s all about having fun, the cool cars and trucks and his being with his good friends.
We don’t often feature four door sedans in Motorhead Magazine but this is a very worthy four door that deserves mentioning in this publication. This ‘56 Chevy is owned by Burrillville resident, Bob Lavallee, of Reservoir Road, located in the northern rural community of Pascoag, Rhode Island. In fact, I also own a home located in Burrillville, Rhode Island in the town of Pascoag about five minutes away from Bob’s home. I drive by his house at least 5 times every week. Bob had been searching for a classic car for a very long time when he found this Chevy about five years ago. The previous owner resides in Somerset, Massachusetts. That is where Bob found the classic four door, purchased it and brought it home to Rhode Island. This ‘56 Chevy has all matching numbers is completely original from the factory. You will find a smooth running 256 V8 under the hood, and a two-speed power glide transmission takes this ride to classic car shows and cruise nights around the region without missing a beat. Weather permitting, Bob attends many of these vehicle showcase events and even has some trophies to boast about at home which he proudly displays. What’s On Your Shelf? What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.
KAYROS AUTO TECH
When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes Q U I C K OI L C H AN G E ( N O AP P T N Ksomething a y r o s Authat t o will Re p readily a i r RI take @ g m upa and i l . c o retain m moisture.

Etch’s OUTLAW GTO is flat out fast but police officers have many vehicles and radios at their disposal. Police officers stopped on an overpass see the jet black GTO approaching from a distance of approximately one hundred yards away and approaching fast. Six police officers draw their revolvers and take aim at the Pontiac as it speeds towards their location perched above the highway on a cleared overpass. Etch can see them as he pushes the GTO to its limits and mats the gas pedal onto the floor mat. Shots ring out. Etch swerves his wanted muscle car from one side of the highway lanes to another attempting to dodge any bullets fired at him in an effort to get him to stop. Etch
never thought that driving a classic car on America’s roadways would lead to a death sentence but here he is fleeing for his life. The GTO swerves recklessly from one lane to another as bullets fly by on all sides. Etch glances upward at the top rim of his windshield as he races under the overpass at a high rate of speed. The police officers run to the other side of the overpass and are shooting at the GTO but it just won’t stop. Etch continues to swerve from one lane to another on the open highway trying to avoid being hit by one of those bullets. Etch sees another off ramp exit sign just ahead of him and he realizes that he needs to get off of the highway and return to the backroads of New England
as soon as possible. The bullets fired from the police officers revolvers have stopped. For now. The captain turns to his police officers and stares at them in disgust. “Why are we trying to stop this guy? What in the hell did he do wrong? We should just mail him some traffic violations in the mail and put an end to this crap!” One of the other police officers replies, “We can’t do that. The Feds want him behind bars and his classic muscle car towed into the nearest scrap yard.” Captain, “Really? Then why aren’t they out here trying to catch him?”
