A Conversation with “CRUISIN’ BRUCE PALMER”
By JIM WEICHERDING
The car show and cruise night season is here; or is it? The answer is “Yes!” It might be delayed, but it’s still here. The Coronavirus may have stalled the start of the car show and cruise night season but it hasn’t ended it. Not by a long shot! Normally, we start attending these weekly and weekend events during the month of April. It’s not the official start of the Car Show and Cruise Night Season. That officially begins and kicks into high gear on Memorial Day Weekend across New England. Then, and only then, does the hobby find a place in our daily lives as a whole. Pockets of automotive event start-ups and a few weekend gatherings in the month of April is not the start of our Car Show Season. It’s the end of May. June, traditionally, the kids get out of school for the summer break. We see a lot more kids attending weekly cruise nights starting in June through the month of August every single year. They may attend weekend car shows earlier but we rarely see them attend cruise nights during the week during the regular school year. I recently had a conversation with my good friend, Car Show DJ and Cumulus Broadcasting Radio DJ on The Pike 100 FM in Worcester, Massachusetts, Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer. We talked about how much negative news and feedback we are all dealing with right now and the impact it is having on our Classic Car and Truck Culture and Car Show and Cruise Night Hobby. Some

people are already calling it a season. They say it’s over before it even got started. We both disagree with that notion. It’s April folks! It’s not even summer time yet and won’t be for three more months.
Jim: “So Cruisin Bruce. What’s your overall reaction regarding this upcoming car show and cruise night season?” Cruisin’ Bruce: “It’s going to affect our earlier sporadic shows and cruise nights during the Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer month of April but it’s way too early to cancel the entire season because of this Coronavirus situation. We have many more months left during the season and delaying some event starts in the month of April and maybe even early May won’t end the entire season.” Jim:“How do you think this will impact the classic car and truck hobby regarding outdoor events such as weekend classic car and truck shows including weekly cruise nights?” Cruisin’ Bruce: “I see a lot of positives right now with our automotive enthusiasts in general. They realize there might be some delays over the next couple of months with events cancellations and postponements buts this is to be expected during a virus epidemic. We have never as a nation dealt with anything like this before.” Jim: “Is it safe to say that with a positive attitude towards are current situaContinued Next Page

automotive enthusiasts, and people in general, will really appreciate what we recently lost and come out to these businesses and restaurants a lot more than they did in the past. This could help us in a positive way instead of a negative way.
Jim: “I’m thinking on the lines, (You don’t know what you’ve got until you lose it). We lost our freedom to come and go where we please due to the Coronavirus and we are not supposed to have physical contact with almost nobody that is outside or our immediate family. Stay at Home! No Contact! Social Distancing! This is a nightmare for human beings. Especially, automotive enthusiasts that have suffered through a winter long hiatus from our friends and hobby. Now we can’t even get together and attend the venues and events that we love. This is more than just a hobby. This is a lifestyle. I miss that. I’m sure everyone living the car guy and gal culture is missing it too. Where do you see this going in the next month or two?”
She’s Back! : The 2015 Z28 tion that we should come out of this on a high note instead of a low note? Cruisin’ Bruce: “I’m hoping that is the case just like many of us are hoping this ends soon and ends on a high note. I don’t want this epidemic to limit or reduce our automotive passion and enthusiasm. CINNAMON FROST MONTEREY By ROB MAY
Central California Mercury Club CCMC reaches out to Columbus Ohio to find this Cinnamon Frost 1967 Monterey Fastback owned by David Clark. He previously owned a Mustang 5.0 GT, and a Lincoln LSC before he bought this Mercury in 1999. “I was looking for an older car after selling the Lincoln. My friend, Pat Umbaugh and I were hanging out. At the time, he had a 66 Galaxie XL with the 7-liter motor, anyway, we looked awhile and finally he found this car in a magazine in New York. I really didn’t like it all that much, but after looking for months at cars for 7,8,10 grand that needed another 10 grand in work; I decided to check this out. So, New York we went, after seeing it, and negotiating the price to 3500, I had to buy it.” The Mercury’s original 390 motor and C6 trans were both rebuilt. A year later, the front end was freshened up with Nick Wills put it back together and fine-tuned it upon re-install.” SMITH BROS motor sports in Groveport Ohio did all the machine work, as in re-coned the rods, polished the crank, and did some extensive head work. “We changed the cam to a .515/.520 lift, had it nitrated for longer service, and installed a holly street avenger 670 carb. It is a notch or two upgraded and runs like a champ.”
all new everything. In 2017, the rear end went out, so it was replaced with a new assembly from Speedway Motors. “Mark Potter, a.k.a. NASCAR Mark, and I put the rear end in the Monterey.” Then the bumpers, door handles and mirror on it were all rechromed. “The late Tom Folk built the first motor, it lasted about 22,000 miles. After the cam went out, the motor was pulled with the help of my friend Russ Miller.

David, a member of the International Mercury Owners Association IMOA, drives his Mercury every day after work if not raining. “It is a cool car. With the 3.50 gear the Monterey is pretty quick now (it used to have a 3.00). On a cool summer night, you could float down the freeway doing 120 with only a 1/2 inch of pedal, then put it to the floor and feel it climb up to who knows, 130 140 and just float...like a big ole boat. It is a one of a kind. I’ve never in 11 years seen another one in person, maybe once a year one will come up on eBay.”

“April Fooling Everyone” JIM WEICHERDING Ugh! I’ll say it again; Ugh! I’m sure that’s how most of us feel right about now due to the current social distancing orders in affect here in Rhode Island and states across New England and nationwide. We are not used to this by any means and humans are not meant to be secluded and restricted from human to human contact for a long period of time. Unfortunately, for most of us that are not health care workers and essential personnel on the front lines trying to help keep all of us healthy and safer, we are told to just stay at home. Easier said than done. I have been inundated with questions and requests from a lot of my friends asking me if we could possibly hold a car show somewhere that can be regulated by keeping people in groups of five due to the virus situation. Everyone knows my automotive network is huge and I know a lot about putting on and hosting car shows and cruise nights across the region and New York State. I don’t have those answers. I only know that we are not supposed to congregate in large groups for any reason whatsoever and I know it’s important because it could potentially put everyone in harm’s way. Not only those automotive enthusiasts that would come to these venues but also
MPE Racing
everyone back at home that are not out mingling with family and friends. That’s something I don’t want to carry on my back. I’m not crazy about social distancing and it’s catching up with me too. This is the time of year when we get to meet up with friends again that we have probably not seen since the last car show or cruise night from last season and last fall. It’s how this all works. We are automotive enthusiasts. We hibernate all winter season and then exit our homes and garages in our rides when spring arrives and start our eight month outdoor events and activities. The timing for dealing with social distancing is really hurting all of us. Maybe not those couch potatoes that don’t do anything but sit in front of their televisions day and night, but for those of us that are always on the go attending these types of automotive venues this is a big deal. Our rides are parked for awhile and that’s something we will just have to deal with. Hopefully, it’s just temporary. If it was going to happen, at least it’s happening long before Memorial Day Weekend in the month of May when these automotive events really kick into gear for the summer and fall months across the state and region every year. Hoping everyone reading this article is healthy and safe and that you stay that way. See you on the road soon. We can’t stay at home forever.

A Passion for Cars
I BUY 80’s & 90’s LUXURY CARS
I started out in this world as a kid who loved everything with wheels. Over the years I have gone from collecting hubcaps and hood ornaments, to chasing some beautiful low mileage automobiles. My passion is Cadillacs, Buicks, Lincolns, and other full size domestic cars. But I will not turn anything down that is interesting and makes you look twice. Hopefully we share the same passion, and you will take a look around. I have bought and sold many cars over the years, and just like you there were some I can look back on and say “I wish I kept that one”. Well I have over the years in fact kept some of those cars, and that has built the collection I have today. So please explore my website, see what I have going on in current inventory, check out some of my sold cars, or step foot right in my warehouse and see what makes the cut to stay right here with me. - Anthony Gozzo

Update: My 2009 ZO6 Corvette By MIKE GALLO
Well it looks like you guys are back! And I’m very thankful for it. I hope everybody is doing well and being safe with this Coronavirus outbreak. I’m sure many of you are absolutely bored to tears and are looking for things to do. So, this article should keep you occupied for a little bit. As you guys know I have been gathering parts for my 2009 ZO6 Corvette. I picked up a set of American Racing full length 2 inch headers with matching 3 inch x pipe for my car. This install is kind of tough so I had my great friend of many years, Ray Leathers of RKL PERFORMANCE in West Warwick RI, do the work. My car has a dry-sump oiling system so it makes installing these exhaust components a little bit more tricky. But of course it was no problem for Ray. Once the car was on the lift Ray took off my factory exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters and also my Corsa 3 inch x pipe. Next he drained the oil and removed the dry-sump oil lines that go to the oil pan. Once that was done he also had to remove the starter. With a little bit of persuasion he managed to get the passenger side header up into its location. Now, moving on to the drivers side seemed a little more difficult as Ray had to take the oil cooler off the side of the block, and with a little bit of time and prying the driver’s header was up in place. Ray is also very tedious in his work and used stainless steel allen bolts to fasten the headers to the heads which makes the install look that much more professional. After reinstalling all of the components, it was time to install the O2 sensor harness extensions and, once again, Ray did an unbelievable job of hiding all of the wiring. Now that the headers were in place Ray installed the 3 inch x pipe and bolted it in after making sure it was perfectly straight and looking sanitary. A little background on these headers from AMERICAN RACING... These particular headers and x pipe are regarded as some of the best in the industry for not only Corvettes but for many other vehicles. The headers I used had 2 inch primaries with 3 inch merge collectors which are supposed to make the most power and torque. These are all 304 stainless steel and of course are made in the good old U.S.A. You get what you pay for and these will run you around $2,300 dollars or so with shipping. Ouch!!! But well worth it. Back to the install. After Ray double checked all of his connections and bolts the car was brought down off the lift so he could go into my power-train control module (PCM) via his laptop with HP TUNERS and gave the car some needed new parameters to make sure no check engine lights came on. After that was all set Ray tackled the install of my new LINGENFELTER 160 degree thermostat to get the car to run a little cooler. Ray proceeded to drain my antifreeze and take out the necessary bolts to the thermostat housing and before I knew it the car was getting refilled with vital fluids and that much closer to start up time. Now I was getting itchy... not because of some weird disease, mind you... lol... but itching to hear my car run after the new exhaust 16| Motorhead Magazine - April 2020

components. When I was given the thumbs up to let her rip I did so with a smile on my face like a little kid getting to eat some cake!! The car instantly fired up and was noticeably much louder and even more raspy sounding. I couldn’t believe my ears as it sounded much better. And no check engine light at all. Whew!!! It was great watching Ray from RKL PERFORMANCE work so professionally and in a timely manner. I couldn’t be happier with his work and extreme eye for detail… definitely one of the best in the business. Well, I think it’s time for me to get this thing on the road and enjoy the new melody exiting the tailpipes. Stay tuned for next month’s installment of this project as RKL PERFORMANCE will be tuning the car to get the most power out of it. So to all of you MOTORHEADS please stay safe with this craziness going on. Until next time my brothers and sisters keep the wheels spinning!!! Over and out!

POPCORN CAT
By ROB MAY
Found prowling around The Little Popcorn Store in Wheaton, IL, this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible is owned Greg Jones, an incurable Motorhead. Rob May of Central California Mercury Club CCMC has family ties to the best popcorn place in the world. He relays this Cat’s story: Greg’s wife is supportive of his affliction with cars. They have been married for 20 years and have three great teenagers; Brad, Erica, and Danielle. Greg owns an insurance agency, Goosehead Insurance. He focusses on protecting the assets and lifestyles of his clients, many of whom are collector car enthusiasts. “After 27 years in the personal insurance industry, I am fortunate to be able to combine my vocation and expertise in insurance, with my avocation and passion for collector cars. I enjoy serving others as my clients who have this similar passion for all things automotive!” Greg’s first car at the age of 16, shortly after he was licensed, was a red ‘72 Cougar Convertible. “That lasted for a year, until I gravitated towards the styling of the ’69 Cougar. So, I traded my ‘72 Convertible for a ‘69 XR7 Hardtop, dressed as an Eliminator – in Orange. Far from discreet, that led to local law enforcement knowing me by sight, and by name within the six months. I have been hooked on Cougars (and a few other Fords) ever since.” Greg has owned 5 Cougars over the years including his current ‘69 XR7 Convertible.
set of reproduction Shelby 10-spoke wheels and BFG Radial TAs, which I feel complete the package nicely! These wheels are the same style wheels that were sold over the Ford and Mercury dealers’ parts counters as part of the “Sharpen Your Cougar’s Claws” after-market parts advertising efforts.” Greg says his Cat is a treat to drive. “We logged a 500-mile round trip last year to Auburn IN for the 50-year celebration of the 1969 cougar without any drama or mechanical issues. The Mercury took second in our class at that show, and we really enjoyed getting the car out to stretch its legs! Most of all, it was great being there with like-minded Cougar owners!” This Cougar grabbed Greg’s attention immediately with its striking white paint, black interior and black top combination. “The white shows off the Cougar’s body lines nicely, accentuating the unique “bounce line” of the ’69 and ’70 Cougars nicely. It’s always been one of my favorite features and angles of the car.” The enjoyment that the Cat brings others while out is what Greg really enjoys the most about the Cougar. “Just having the car on the road, or even parked while we’re in having a drink or dinner allows others to enjoy some of the history of what cars were really all about back then. Sharing the Cat with others brings us joy, and hopefully serves to inspire a few young kids (and perhaps some older ones alike) to follow their passion, join the hobby, and to simply have an appreciation of these cars! We take the Cougar to shows, but tend to enjoy cruise-ins more, seeing as how it’s more of a driver for us. We’re members of the International Mercury Owners Association (IMOA)!”
There was a five-year stretch in his life where Greg went without a “fun” car. “I began my search for our Cougar. I looked for a few years before I finding the right one. I knew what I wanted, and envisioned a driver-quality car, and one I could live seeing ice cream or crushed Oreos spilled on the seats as the kids grew up. I found this Cougar in Wisconsin in 2011, and believe we are the third owners.” This 51-year-old Cougar was sold new at Merlin Motors in Camden, NJ on April 10, 1969, and the Cat spent most of its life out East, fortunately used as for fair weather driver. It has 116k original miles, and the 351 Windsor mated to the FMX 3-spd auto trans were both rebuilt at 100k. The car is largely stock, with only the addition of a four-barrel Holley 650 from the original 2-barrel configuration. A ’68 XR7-G Shift handle highlights the mostly original interior. The front end was been rebuilt with lowering springs, and a “Shelby Drop” of the upper control arms freshens up the factoryoptioned heavy-duty suspension package. “Those changes give it a more aggressive stance, and much better handling. I topped off the look with a 18| Motorhead Magazine - April 2020

Email: info@nepayroll.com Those certain people, when you look at the “big picture”, just seem to have the perfect life. Everything just seems to have fallen into place for them, and when they have a great personality to go with all that good luck, you’re really happy to see them doing well and enjoying life. Brian Khoury is one of those guys that seem to be living it up and he deserves every minute of it. He owns a very successful electrical business called Power Technologies, has a beautiful wife, two healthy children, and a gorgeous home in Londonderry, NH. The biggest bonus in that equation is that his wife Karri races too, along with his two sons who are currently in the New England Dragway Junior dragster program. Karri used to join me in the Street Eliminator class with her Mustang, but ever since she got a taste of driving Brian’s 8 second 1994 Chevrolet Silverado, she went all out, got licensed to run the

Future Burners The Next Generation of Muscle Car Enthusiasts By XANDER YESSAIAN One of the best parts of the Beantown Burners Muscle Car Club is that it is one of the most family friendly groups in existence today. Whether they’re meeting for Sunday morning donuts or hanging at the Club President’s house for garage night, they always make us kids feel welcome. And for a good reason too, we are the future of the Muscle Car hobby. While you hear people saying that automotive activities are dying down, I think it’s the exact opposite. There’s never been a better time to build, cruise, and enjoy a classic car. According to my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian, you used to have to crawl around junkyards and troll paper classified ads, then experiment with swaps and components. Today we have unfathomable resources available to us that our Muscle Car forefathers could never have imagined. You could literally build an entire car with the click of a mouse, after Googling your swap to
find millions of people who have done the same process and offered their insights on the process. This is a huge savings in time in money if you’re careful in what information you follow, considering it’s the internet and there’s still that handful of self-proclaimed experts I like to call Keyboard Quarterbacks. All things considered, we have grown up with computers and are quite savvy in navigating the huge pool of resources our Dad’s never had. In addition, we are the children of Motorheads, so we have also grown up in garages, drag strips, cruise nights, and parts stores. We have learned to appreciate the “build it, don’t buy it” mentality. A few of us even have cars already (or are 22| Motorhead Magazine - April 2020

used as excuses when our Dads buy something and say it is for us). We will grow up working hard and playing hard but this will help build our self-confidence and independence. Whether we’re a racer, a car show enthusiast, or a little of both, we will also encounter hundreds, if not thousands of simply awesome people. As my Dad looks forward to the beginning of my Junior Dragster career, he constantly raves about my “racing family”. These are the amazing people that I spend all my weekends at New England Dragway with. These are people that help each other, love each other, and enjoy each other’s successes. Relationships like this also exist in Car Clubs such as our Beantown Burners. Whether you need tools, parts, an extra set of hands, a trailer, or even a warm garage to work in (Thanks Nick), The guys and girls in this club are always there for you. Even if you’ve put on a few extra pounds and need Dave and Danielle to jab you into exercising again, this Club is an awesome group of people. At three years old it’s hard to believe how many friends I have made within the automotive community but these are LIFELONG friends that I will cherish and enjoy. While I may not know exactly what the future holds for me, I have overheard my Dad recently talking about building me a LS powered S10 pickup, but tomorrow he could be back to trying to convincing my mother I need
a Buick Turbo T-Type. By the time I’m sixteen, I could actually have a whole fleet of my own. Of course, with my Dad you never know. But as always- You heard it here first- Xander Y- OUT!!

very good considering that the car is 33 years old at this point.
So I’m guessing you’re wondering what I’m doing with this 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Z51? Well, I picked up the car from one of my good friends, Russell, with the intention of bringing it back to life. This car is absolutely bone stock and has only 115,000 original miles on it - which is

some degreaser and proceeded to powerwash the motor completely. The car was starting to look pretty good. After the motor was all dry I used some dressing to spruce it up a little bit and give it a much-needed shine. My next step was to bring the paint back to a respectable level so I pulled out my buffer with a few different cutting pads and some compound and went to town. The car is a single stage paint so as I was buffing the car, the color of the paint was transferred to my buffing pads. Not a big deal. Little by little the shine started to come back to the car and it actually looked pretty good. My friend Louie decided to come over and give me a hand. With some insight from him things started to shape up. After the buffer stopped spinning and I gave it a quick wipe down we were both surprised at how well it looked. The interior needed to be vacuumed and have the carpets cleaned which I proceeded to do and the results were very good. Project Silver Surfer was starting to come to life. I told Louie to take the car up the street for a ride to see how it was. Before I knew it Louie made his way out of my driveway and had the tires spinning up most of my street! LOL, the car still has some life in it! After returning from the the short ride, Louie gave me the thumbsup and said all is good with the car and how much he actually liked these Corvettes of this generation. We started brainstorming of things that we’re going to do with the car. Should we do a Dyno pull in the stock configuration? Or should we put the nitrous on it and have some fun? The ideas kept coming and getting crazier. Who would have thought? After a little bit of thinking I decided maybe it was time to put project Silver Surfer up for sale. So I did so. You know what’s next don’t you? That’s right, an influx of people calling and driving me crazy about buying the car. After dealing with some strange characters I was sent the perfect person to buy the car. An older gentleman from Taunton came down with his son to look at the car and wouldn’t you know it, the minute he arrived, project Silver Surfer decided to overheat! That’s just my luck. But that didn’t deter this gentleman at all… he diagnosed the car and figured out that the fan stopped working and asked me for some wire and tools and proceeded to fix the car on the side of the road and get it up and running within 20 or so minutes. Much to my astonishment. He then took the car for a quick ride to make sure all is good and came back happy as could be. The gentleman paid me for project Silver Surfer and disappeared off into the sunset with his son following him back to Taunton, Massachusetts. I was a little bit sad but a little bit excited as I told him I would love to follow his progress on rebuilding the car in these very pages of Motorhead Magazine.
What do you guys think of project Silver Surfer? Let me know.

When I was much younger, in my teenage years, I always had a love for hot rods. Watching my older brother work on his 1954 Ford convertible gave me the inspiration to have a hot rod of my own someday. Aer extensive searching, I finally found myself a 1956 Chevy 2 Door. Under the hood was a 265 cubic inch original engine. Aer a year of ownership, I had entered the Marine Corp. While I was away, my older brother had used it during his honeymoon. He had driven it from Rhode Island to Canada with his new wife. Unfortunately, my brother had an accident along the way and totaled my car. When I returned home from the Marine Corp, I began my search for another hot rod. It was at that time I found my 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster 2 Door Coupe, pictured in this article. It was stored in the corner of a truck auto body shop under a 1955 Chevy 2 Door. I would have purchased both vehicles but I only had enough money for the ’48 Chevy, which I liked the

most. My newly purchased ’48 Chevy did need a lot of mechanical work done when I bought it. I brought it to many hot rod specialists over the years and had a lot of work done, but aer spending thousands of dollars, the car just still wasn’t right. A friend of mine introduced me to
Bob Pingitore, who later introduced me to John Conti. I went to John’s shop, Conti’s Auto Service & Motorsports in Cranston, he checked out the vehicle completely and gave me two choices; either rebuild from the front end to the rear or replace/custom fabricate the safety areas that need the most aention-which I ended up having John do.

John Conti, his two sons and daughter have made my vehicle safe for me to drive. He installed a complete “Heidts Super Ride II” front end with tubular upper and lower control arms, a power steering rack, “Wilwood” brake rotors, pads, 4-piston calipers, and billet adjustable coil-overs. Basically every safety aspect of the car was worked on or refabricated to be made safe, from the brakes to the steering and suspension and everything in between. It was well worth it and I am extremely happy. America will survive this pandemic. SEMPER FI CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

REGISTRATIONS POURING IN AHEAD OF TRI TRACK OPEN MODIFIED SERIES 2020 SCHEDULE By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK SEEKONK, Mass. -- The COVID-19 pandemic may have delayed the start of the Tri Track Open Modified Series season, but the list of entered drivers and car owners for 2020 continues to grow just over a month before the drop of the first scheduled green flag. For those who haven’t seen, the start of the season has been delayed until May 9th at Monadnock Speedway -- but that date is fluid, depending on how the pandemic develops. As of this writing, the entire schedule remains in place, with Monadnock on May 9th and Claremont Speedway on May 24th opening the season. “We’re still on target for May 9th as of now,” Wayne Darling, one of two Managing Partner’s for the Tri Track Open Modified Series, said. “Our registrations are growing daily – with some stout talent lined up to compete for a large purse. We also want to remind everyone about the Pepsi Challenge, which will pay heat race winners in 2020.” A former series champion and countless winners are on the current entry list -- one filled with talent from top to bottom. Defending series champion Ronnie Williams is looking to repeat in 2020, with car owner Gary Casella, as the combination comes back fired up and ready for more. They were able to visit Victory Lane at Seekonk Speedway last year as part of the $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday before earning their crown. Ron Silk and Chase Dowling, two drivers who earned victories last year, are both back with the same team. Silk teams with Bob Horn, as Dowling teams with Jimmy Paige. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is also well represented. Matt Swanson, who drives for the historic Boehler Racing on the tour, will drive for Larry Westgate in a car prepared by Boehler Racing, carrying the famed ‘Ole Blue’ colors. Woody Pitkat, who is back teaming with Stan Mertz, returns to wheel the No. 6, while former NASCAR Modified Tour Rookie of the year Calvin Carroll returns to Tri Track for another round. On the veteran front, Kirk Alexander, Les Hinckley and Tommy Barrett are coming back. Weekly SK Modified racers from Stafford Speedway set to compete with Tri 34| Motorhead Magazine - April 2020

READERS RIDES JIM GILLIS’ 2003 FORD MUSTANG MACH 1
By ED YESSAIAN
When my good friend Jim Gillis stopped by and asked me to assist him in selling his car, I honestly thought either he had lost his mind or he was thinking it was April Fool’s Day. But he was serious, after many years and countless good times, he was ready to let it go. And if you know me, I don’t get attached to cars, but Jim’s Mach 1 was always one of my favorites whenever we went to shows or Cruise Nights. For starters, I remember when Ford revived the legendary Mach 1 moniker for 2003. The cars had a similar powerplant to my 1997 SVT Cobra with 305hp being churned
out of a 4.6 liter, 32v DOHC engine. The Mach 1 was produced in limited numbers with Jim’s being number 9232 of 9652.
From the factory a handful of cosmetic changes really made these cars stand out from a Mustang GT. The shaker hood was the first thing you would notice as well as the front grille delete and chin spoiler. The rear spoiler was painted a matte black and a set of 60’s style wheels decked each corner. On top of the cool, retro styling from the factory, Jim also added MRT rear window louvers to finish off the classic look. From the factory the Bullitt and Mach 1 cars come with a different set of coil springs, lowering the car approximately ¾ of an inch. Jim decided to go just a bit lower with an Eibach spring kit and the car now sits perfectly, with a set black Bullitt wheels capping off the aggressive stance. Step inside and with a simple turn of the key the car roars to life with an amazing tone that was

accomplished by an MRT hi-flow mid-pipe and Flowmaster mufflers. In addition to the exhaust, A K&N FIPK cold-air kit adds a couple horsepower, with an SCT tuner maximizing the add-ons. While this car looks, sounds, and drives incredibly, as previously mentioned, Jim is looking for something new and different as he’s owned the Mach 1 since it was brand new. Asking price is 15,000 obo. Please contact Jim at- JimGillis.s47@ gmail.com
Gas powered vehicles will become obsolete and so will the classic car and truck culture. Drag racing and racing in general will have top speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour if that sport arena even survives the future at all. Etch is trying to make a stand and a statement: “Leave our Classic Car and Truck Culture and Hobby alone!” He isn’t out to get anybody or hurt anybody. He just wants the freedom to drive his muscle car Pontiac GTO on the roadways again without being pursued by a thousand police officers, federal agents and the national guard trying to stop him
or not kill him in the process. Etch doesn’t want to see the decline of the automotive enthusiasts activities or watch our classic car and truck culture slowly pass away and be left on the side of the road like tossed trash. By the way, he hates when people litter our nation with their trash. He never sees classic car and truck enthusiasts ever doing that. It’s the dirty pigs that have no respect for anything or anybody. He often approaches these idiots telling them to go back and pick up what they just threw on the ground while in their vehicle. He isn’t very nice about it
either and when he leaves the location you can be guaranteed that his right foot is firmly planted on the gas pedal and leaving them in a cloud of burnt tire rubber. Etch reaches down and turns the ignition key in his GTO and looks around to see if the coast is clear of anyone or the police that might be searching for him and his Outlaw Pontiac.

Classic Auto Appraisal Offers Advice During COVID-19 Outbreak Covid-19, or the corona virus, it doesn’t matter what you call it, its consuming the news and life as we know it. The change to every facet of our lives, our families, our friends, or economics and our hobbies are all being impacted. Some are laid off, some are working form home, and public life has halted. Some of the largest car shows in our country have been postponed. The New York Auto show was rescheduled, the World of Wheels show canceled (in some venues), Good Guys canceled multiple shows and the organization I am part of: National Street Rod Association, canceled and is rescheduling the first 3 major events of the season. What does this mean to us as enthusiasts, hobbyists, collectors on a nationwide scale? You’ve probably seen large auto auctions being canceled, for example Mecum Auctions has rescheduled all events through April! These auctions have a large impact on both the prices of vehicles and the consumer index on volume. The high-end collector markets are starting to feel the impact of the halt, with high end vehicles not changing hands as frequently. However, the private sale vehicles have not shown much of a downturn, yet. Of course, if the economy continues to slow the impact will be felt across the board.
Previous customer’s cars
What can you do during this volatile time? My top suggestions would be: 1.
Don’t panic, most of values of the cars we own are staying stable. If you need to sell now is a good time, if the market continues to slow you may be forced to sell for less than your true value. If you’re unsure where your car is valued, get an appraisal to help you find a true price. No one wants to pay to list a vehicle and have it sit on a website with no interest because its overpriced.
2.
Upgrade! Have you been thinking about upgrading? Now is a great time to do so! Your local speed shops, mechanics and specialty shops are hurting, if you can help keep the economy moving and support these establishments it’s the perfect time to!
3.
Check your insurance policies, many of you have your classic and special interest cars on your normal auto policy. Many insurers that are not geared towards our market offer an agreed upon value that still depreciates!! Meaning they will not pay out the true agreed upon value! Look into it and change companies if this is the case. Companies like Grundy and Hagerty, as examples, are happy to guide you in better protecting your investment.
4.
And finally, update your appraisal! If your appraisal is over a year old or you have done upgrades, you need to update it, before the possible downturn in values. We appraise classics, street rods, hot rods, muscle cars, modern modified muscle and foreign cars. We have discounted all

DIY or Professional Detailing? By BILL PRATT For most people, DIY (Do It Yourself) detailing consists of nothing more than a driveway wash, dry, and spray wax. For some, it extends to tire and trim dressing, chrome polish, or whatever else might be required to cover the entire vehicle and make it look new, or almost new, again. The more you want done, the more important it becomes to decide whether you have the time, patience, and skill to do it yourself or whether you are better served having it done professionally.
for the next step. Some people will wash the car again while others will just wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. Which step comes next depends on the condition of the finish and whether it needs any paint correction. The micro-marring I mentioned earlier or other forms of light scratches are examples of things that might warrant some correction. Keep in mind that scratches that can catch your fingernail are not candidates for this type of paint correction. They are too deep to be polished out. But if you can’t feel them with your fingernail, they can probably be eliminated with a good polishing.
For me, I’ve discovered that my cutoff for DIY detailing is when the final waxing jumps from normal waxes to ceramic coating. The proof of that is in all the swirl marks visible below a gorgeous, but hard to remove, shine. If you’re looking to do that level of detaiang, take it to a pro.
Selection of the polish product is dependent on the extent of scratching or fading in the finish. There are typically several grades of polish, from very lightly abrasive all the way up to polishing compound (which is best left to a professional). Applying a lightly abrasive polish can be done safely by an amateur with a random-orbital polisher and a good quality polishing pad.
For many people, paint correction should also be left to a professional. Just make sure to see examples of their handiwork first on the darkest color car they can provide. If they can show you a swirl-free finish on a black vehicle, they probably know what they’re doing.
Essentially, the polish removes the very thin layer of clearcoat from the top of the finish that contains the scratches or other imperfections that are dulling the finish. Once the damaged layer is removed, the original shine is visible again and as smooth as it was as it exited the factory assembly line.
But for those who want to save the money and do it themselves, here’s some information that may help you get the best result.
The important technique note here is to let the pad and tool do the work. Don’t press down hard or stay on one area too long since that can cause damage of its own. Take your time and move slowly over all the areas that need attention. As you finish polishing a section, go back over it with a microfiber cloth and buff away any remnants of polish left behind.
DIY Detailing Whether we’re talking about show cars or your daily driver, there are some easy things you can do that will keep your vehicle looking showroom new or pretty close to it. Full-blown exterior detailing is typically a seven-step process. 1. Wash 2. Dry 3. Clay bar to remove grit and contaminants 4. Prep 5. Paint correction, as needed 6. Polish 7. Wax Most people do only steps 1 & 2, followed by step 7. The problem with that approach is that contaminants in the finish don’t get completely removed. Run your fingers over your freshly washed and waxed car and you’ll feel the grittiness that remains. But a car that’s been put through all 7 steps will feel so smooth your fingers will glide over the paint and things will tend to slide off the car instead of staying where you put them. Let’s start with Step 1. This, by the way, is also the first opportunity to do some nearly invisible damage to the finish. As you wash the car with sponge and soap, the sponge will transfer surface grit to the wash bucket and each time you dunk the sponge in the bucket that grit gets disturbed and can be picked back up by the sponge. Then it becomes an abrasive against your paint, leaving very light scratches called micro-marring. To prevent this, put a grit guard insert tray in your bucket or buy a bucket that come with one. It will trap the grit at the bottom of the bucket so it can’t find its way back onto your vehicle. For the same reason, use a separate sponge for your wheels and tires. Detergents designed for home use will often be strong enough that they will tend to strip the wax off as you wash. A good quality soap designed for cars will clean the car without stripping much of the wax. The next step is to restore some finish protection Step 2 can also damage the finish. Towels or car wash cloth strips can hang onto particles removed from your car or others and drag them across the paint. To prevent this, you can dry the car with an air hose or with a squeegee designed for the purpose. If you do use a towel, use something like a microfiber towel or chamois that doesn’t tend to trap and hold onto particles. The clay bar step is the first step in restoring that silky smooth finish. The clay bar is abrasive so it will grab and hold contaminants that have started to work themselves into the finish, pulling them out and eliminating the gritty feeling they cause. However, because of the abrasiveness, it’s important to keep the finish well lubricated and slick while using the clay bar. I use a protective wax detail spray on the area as I work it to ensure that I don’t damage the paint. After going over the whole vehicle with the clay bar, you’ll need to prep the surface 50| Motorhead Magazine - April 2020
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
The final step is to apply a base coat of wax. This can be paste wax or spray wax. The newer compounds of spray wax are easier to apply and the good quality brands will work well. Paste wax will likely leave a better layer of protection overall, but the difference may not justify the extra effort required to apply it. The 7-step process, if done at least once a year, will keep your vehicle looking like new, especially if it’s maintained over the course of the year. A good detail spray wax will maintain the finish protection and help repel dust and dirt. Over the years, I’ve used a bit of everything but I’ve settled on the Surf City Garage line of products because of their ease of use and quality. Basically, my car care kit looks like this: • Surf City Garage Hot Rod Detailer for wax maintenance • Surf City Garage Dash Away interior cleaner • Surf City Garage Black Max for trim • Surf City Garage Beyond Black for tires • Surf City Garage Killer Chrome for bright wheels and trim • Surf City Garage Clearly Better glass cleaner • If I need a polish, I’d use Meguiars, Poor Boys or one of the other premium brands (Surf City doesn’t have a product in this category). • Various colors of microfiber cloths (each color goes with a different product above so that I don’t mix different chemicals on the same cloths) • Foam applicators for things like tire and trim treatment or chrome polish. • A good quality wash mitt This combination of products is what I use on my show cars and daily drivers. Yours might have a completely different set of products but they should cover the same bases. Whatever brand (or brands) you prefer, make sure you know how it is formulated. Brands that contain silicone, for example, can produce great immediate results while doing long-term damage to trim, upholstery, etc. Others may produce a very glossy, wet look when you really want a satin finish. The process of detailing your car can take hours when performing all 7 steps but it doesn’t need to be done that way every time. Do it once and then maintain it and you’ll find your car will always look good to others without a lot of effort on your part. It’s kind of fun having people get in one of my vehicles and tell me it looks like it’s ready to go to a show! Bill Pratt is the Owner & General Manager of Rock ‘n Road Outfitters.
