TURNING ON THE WIN LIGHT! Britt Taylor moves into the NHRA Pro’s

By ERIC BAIRD, Renegade Rides Drag racing is back on the rise nationwide. What’s even more interesting is that women are now taking the sport by storm. There is a whole new generation of women racers are sending it down the track with speed and they mean business. Not since the days of Shirley Muldowney have we see such an exciting time for women in the sport. More and more we see younger female drivers hammering down the quarter mile and putting on the win light! Lots of smiles per gallon along with some serious focus on track are keeping the boys on their toes. 2019 has been a big year for women in drag racing all across the country with the likes of Erica Enders, Brittany Force, Megan Meyers, Leah Pritchett, and more all taking top spots in the NHRA Pomona finals. The high energy, big horsepower excitement of drag racing is booming and the girls are right in the middle showing they can get it done with style. Behind them another generation of female racers is gearing up for real world competition at local track all across the U.S. The story of 23 year old Britt Taylor is not your average tale. Drag racers tend to come from a family and friend lineage. Endless cases of sons and daughters growing up with the sport as dad raced on Sunday’s have led to second and third generation racers for years. Out of that came some great female drivers. Many of the kids running the junior dragsters come from seasoned race families who are well established and will go on to bigger and better things. This was not the case for Britt Taylor, but let’s back up a bit. Living on a sailboat during the summer and traveling the world on missions with her family to serving those in need was just part of life. Britt would however spend time in the garage at home with her dad as he worked on the family cars. This would spark an interest in all things mechanical. Listening to “Car Talk” radio with her dad would become a staple in her life that continues to this day. Well educated at home, and at school, drag racing could not have been further from her mind. Britt would go on to graduate college with a degree in media & film as she moved towards a career in that industry. It was a phone call from the producers of a classic car show that would bring her closer to a whole new journey that she knew nothing of. She might not have known it then, but a turn in the road that would change everything was just around the corner. While filming her very drag racing event in early 2019 she would become addicted to the sights and sounds of burning rubber, the smell of race fuel and the roaring engines of classic muscle cars screaming down the track. It was a few weeks after the event that a casual conversation with would lead Britt to making runs at the track on street night in a used Corvette. One thing would lead to another and in short order a race team was formed, racing coaches were on deck, safety gear was ordered, and the whole team was on the road to find out where this was all going. Heading to the track sometimes 4 days a week Britt kept knocking off those tenths of a second. Soon the Corvette was out and a real 90’s Chevy Camaro street/strip car became a training tool. That didn’t last long! Like a caterpillar shedding skin soon the 90’s LT1 Camaro would be left behind for a true big tire 1968 Camaro. This would be a big transition for a new driver into a big block 9 second, fuel drinking monster. The speeds climbed and the times dropped lower and lower. It was over a four month period that Britt conquered both the car and the track. She listened closely to her coach veteran race driver Wayne Farquar. Britt worked hard, drove fast, and it all paid off in spades at the end. 23 years old, never been on the track (never even had a speeding ticket) in her life and yet in that short amount of time she was able to capture her NHRA Pro Sportsman license! From 14 seconds into the 9 seconds bracket. True story. 4 Months! 4| Motorhead Magazine - December 2019

Not every day at the track was a good one. Drag cars can be fickle when the weather is hot. Finding the right tune for the car takes time, but through it all she worked harder than anyone I know to put the win light on. After just one season of training and trophy racing this amazing young woman had achieved what many take years to accomplish. Now with a full team behind her Britt is ready for the 2020 NHRA Pro Sportsman Northeast racing season. We asked her a few questions to learn more about how this was even possible. Here’s what she had to say: Tell us a little bit about hanging around with your dad in the garage working on the family cars. I have always enjoyed working with my dad on creative and technical projects in our garage and on the boat. While I primarily worked on the aesthetic side of things, varnishing deck rails and detailing family cars, I certainly served my time fetching wrenches and pliers, replacing bulbs and filters, the basics. I am not ashamed to say that a good deal of my initial car knowledge came from listening to ‘Car Talk’ with my dad on Saturday mornings and we have both employed a good deal of Tappet brothers’ wisdom over the years. When did you start driving and who taught you how? Like most, I learned to drive at 16 in the trusty family mini van, an older-than-dirt Dodge Caravan that just wouldn’t quit and refused to go above 65mph. My mother bravely co-captained my first several driving experiences, and likes to remind me of those experiences now that I drive competitively. She has always been my biggest fan and I am so grateful to both of my parents for their unwavering support. The first time you saw a drag race what were your thoughts? My first drag race experience was an 1/8th mile reunion event in MA, and I was immediately blown away by everything about the sport. The combination of a love for classic cars and a competitive spirit was immediately appealing, and I found myself dreaming about restoring and racing a classic. Little did I know! You traveled and filmed lots of cars for a while. What was that like? I was so blessed to have the opportunity to travel to local and national car shows as assistant producer on an automotive media team. Most memorably, our team traveled to the Concours’ de Elegance on Amelia Island, FL where we were blown away to see some of the worlds most incredible cars. I still get goose bumps thinking about the original winning GT40 from the 1968 Le Mans. For a film major and an avid car enthusiast, it was heaven. Tell us what it felt like the first time you went down the track in the ’68 Pro Camaro. My first time down the track in the ’68 was simultaneously terrifying and completely exhilarating. At the time, the car was still largely an unknown quantity and we weren’t entirely sure how well it would perform for its first couple times down the track, but it delivered almost immediately. After a few rounds of test and tune “taking it easy” turned into “how many 10ths of a second can we shave off on this run?” It is unbelievably satisfying to drive a car that wants to go fast. You moved up the ladder quickly into a high performance drag car. Describe for us what went through your mind as you tackled learning how to handle it. With an awesome team and a very consistent car, I was able to see a lot Continued Next Page

of progress in just a few months. We went from just over 12 second runs to under 10 seconds, which is a very significant speed and power difference. At the beginning of the season, I wasn’t sure exactly what I would be driving and at what level, but the possibilities evolved very quickly as we built up the Camaro and I spent a good deal of time behind the wheel. I still have moments sitting in the seat where I think to myself “how on earth did I get here and who am I that I get to drive this awesome car”, but those thoughts disappear pretty quickly when the visor goes down. You ended up the 2019 season on a high note. What did that mean to you?

I could not have imagined a better end to the 2019 race season. Months of long late-night drives, testing and tuning, trial and error, and fast-paced learning, culminated in the two fastest runs of the whole season and a Pro/Sportsman NHRA license in hand. I was so blessed to have had my husband, parents, and in-laws at the track as well as the entire race team. It was the perfect way to celebrate a massive collective effort. Being a pro/sportsman drag racer is hard work. Tell us a little bit about what it was like to get there. The biggest challenge we struggled with this past season were the time restraints. As a team, we

only had 3 months to test the car and get it ready for racing, which involved spending every weekend at the track and many evenings replacing parts, loading and unloading tools, and performing regular maintenance. I learned quickly that the pace and the level of commitment are intense, but also that every moment is worth it when you are actively improving and moving forward. What’s happening for the 2020 season?

I am hugely looking forward to getting back in the seat for the 2020 season! This past season, we focused largely on training and tuning the car while competing in trophy races. In 2020 we will be racing for points in the NHRS Division 1 and I am really excited to start doing some serious racing. Over the winter we will also be making some technical and aesthetic updates including a new front end, a fresh coat of paint, all new gaskets, and fresh tires in addition to all of our regular maintenance. We also intend to take the trailer down south this winter and do some racing in the Carolinas in anticipation of the spring 2020 season. Much to look forward to in the garage and at the track!

Well there you have it. Britt Taylor is energetic, fast to learn, and ready to race. It’s very exciting to see a new generation of drivers coming up the ranks learning from those who have been around for a lot of years. It’s even more exciting to see a young woman come from nowhere into the belly of the beast. Some might think that girls don’t have what it takes, but by no means is Britt Taylor sheepish about burning rubber. She runs her car to the floor every pass like a pro. She also loves spending time meeting people at the track. Drag racing is a family lifestyle. Faith, friendship and support for other drivers plays a big part in becoming a good racer. A little luck doesn’t hurt either. Her plan these days: Do whatever it takes to win! With race team members, sponsors, and volunteers gearing up for the start of the 2020 season things are looking good. We are sure to see and hear more from Britt Taylor as she continues to work hard to become a great driver, competitor, and race friend. 2019 Outlaw 10.5

F

ED YESSAIAN The 2019 season marked exactly ten years since I started following the Outlaw 10.50 series at New England Dragway. My cousin Dave Nadeau ran the 10.50 Fast Street index and my friend Dan Christopher ran the 9.50 Super Street index. At the time the entry level class was 11.50 Real Street which was out of my reach, unfortunately with my SVT Cobra only running a best of 12.98. Eventually, in 2013, the series added the 12.50 True Street index

and I picked up a 4,000 dollar Mustang GT that Dan Christopher brought to his shop, Southern NH Undercar, to get me into the class. I ran True Street for three seasons before the stock 110k mile motor let go on Nitrous. At this point I knew I wanted to run Fast Street and after two and a half years, I finally got back into Outlaw 10.50 for the end of the 2017 season. Most of the faces were the same, with a few new competitors joining the fray. I ran a couple seasons in the 10.50 index and for 2020 season should finally be on track to make most of the ten races, where I’ll go up against some of the best heads up racers in New England. For the 2019 season, there were once again five indexes contested and a couple new faces in the Winner’s Circle and even a couple new faces on stage for the Annual Award’s Night, giving Championship speeches. Ladies and Gentlemen, here are your 2019 Outlaw 10.50 Champions…

12.50 True Street Multiple time Champion Steve George successfully fended off Jim Reilly, one of the original four in the True Street Class. Look for Reilly to be a strong contender next season. 11.50 Real Street The Machine Ron Childs, in 8| Motorhead Magazine - December 2019

Five Superstars Stand Tall After Ten Weeks of Racing a borrowed race car, added his 36th Championship and reached the 400 win mark (402) to take the Championship in Real Street. Everyone’s favorite “Fireball” Ralph Blackburn was a very close second and will definitely be a contender in 2020.

10.50 Fast Street Newcomer Andy DeCastro battled it out with Fast Street’s Little Sweetheart Michelle Sanford right up to the very last race. DeCastro would eventually prevail but watch out for Michelle to come out swinging next season.

9.50 Super Street Bob Barger Senior put up a great fight against Viking Motorsports/Team MBP front man Gregg Boudreau but up to the very last race Boudreau was able to hold off Barger for his first Championship ever.

8.50 Wild Street The story of the year happened in Wild Street as Dave Dufresne was either the winner or Runner Up in almost every race this season. Equally as successful was multitime Champion Bill Sanford, who finished Runner Up.

There’s really no other felling like taking delivery of your first Mustang or Muscle Car, especially when you’re in your early teenage years. The first time you lay eyes on that aggressive stance, the first smell of the leather interior, the first feeling of that rumble that happens after your first turn of the key. Every one of us can recall what seemed like the greatest day of our life when we got behind the wheel of our very own piece of American History. For Jason Pjojian of Cranston RI, that amazing sense of ownership and pride came to reality this past summer when he got his hands on his immaculate 1997 SVT COBRA.

Jason is the third owner of the car, but both of the first two owners were ridiculously obsessed with keeping it clean, garaged, and well maintained. As of this article the car only has 34,000 miles and doesn’t seem to have a single chip, scratch, or fingerprint anywhere on it. Jason credits the car’s current appearance and brilliant shine to his father Bob Pjojian, who shared many of his detailing secrets. Bob is currently in search of a new 2015 Mustang GT Convertible, which will be his fourth Mustang. So we know that Jason has a great role model 142 to follow.Chandler St. Ave

SEMA Through the Eyes of a Newbie By NANCY PRATT SEMA is the Specialty Equipment Market Association. Car and Driver called it “the United Nations conference of all things aftermarket.” But when people talk about going to SEMA, they’re not talking about visiting the Association headquarters in California. They’re talking about going to the week-long SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the first week of November. SEMA is basically DisneyWorld for car enthusiasts. My husband, Bill, has been to SEMA several times, but this year was my first visit, and it was quite

newest and most exciting products being offered to the aftermarket world. This year there was a lot of emphasis on products for the new Jeep JL and Gladiator. Then we went through both floors of South Hall where the bolton-type accessories and things were set up. North Hall contained lighting and electronics as well as tools and other equipment like lifts, steamers and wrap products. The tent contained one of the most fun areas – the Overlanding exhibits. Overlanding is off-road adventure travel, and it was truly amazing to see what was available. A feature of this year’s show was color! Everywhere you looked there was

Photos source: www.semashow.com

an amazing trip. The SEMA Show is held in the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is one of the largest convention centers in the world with 1,940,631 square feet of exhibit space. My first view of the Convention Center was when we went by on Sunday afternoon to pick up my badge. We took the monorail from our hotel and got off at the Convention Center stop. Standing on the elevated platform, the show area covers everything you can see over 180 degrees. Starting on the left, you have the Westgate Hotel. Checkin is in that hotel as well as some of the seminars and some of the vendors new to the show. Then as you look to the right, you see the Convention Cen-

ter itself. First North Hall, then Center Hall with the New Product Showcase, it goes out over a several lane highway, and then the two-story South Hall. Then past South Hall there is a huge tent that goes back the equivalent of a couple of blocks with yet more exhibits. The parking areas in front of the Convention Center are full of more exhibits, drifting tracks, and hundreds of fabulous cars and trucks. Monday of SEMA week is dedicated to education. There are dozens of seminars to choose from on a wide range of topics. You can learn about upcoming trends in the automotive world or get practical training on body repair or get insights into better use of social media for your business or new ways to market your business. All of this is included in your SEMA pass. Tuesday all the real fun starts. Like many folks, we started in the New Product Showcase in Center Hall. This is several rooms filled with some of the

fabulous color. Wheels in every shade from just little touches of color to make a wheel pop to wheels painted to match your vehicle. There were fabulous color-changing lights with amazing patterns and strobes. And simply gorgeous paint jobs from shiny metallics to custom colors in a rainbow of choices. It’s really hard to describe the wide variety of things you’ll find at SEMA. Want to see an Adirondack chair made out of exhaust pipes? SEMA has it. How about a monster truck tricked out to look like Scooby Do? You’ll find it at SEMA. Want to see a vehicle decked out with all the comforts of home – stove, refrigerator, freezer, shower, beds, canopy – that also transports your canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, etc.? Yeah, it’s at SEMA. Want to watch skilled craftsmen wrap a vehicle while you watch? Want to see demonstrations of the latest equipment? Want to watch high school kids duke it out at the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Junior Engine Challenge? Want to cheer on drifters as they show off their skills? Want to meet celebrities of the auto world, hear them speak and ask questions, get autographs or pictures? SEMA has it all. From rusty hot rods to beautifully restored classics to fabulous truck and Jeep builds, you can see it all at SEMA. From Tuesday through Thursday, we walked roughly 6 miles each day around the SEMA show and still didn’t see it all. There is simply too much to see to be able to take it all in. But it’s a great time and is a wonderful celebration of all things automotive. Editor’s note: The 2020 SEMA show dates are: November 3-6, 2020 and will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada. Visit www.semashow.com to register. MOTORHEAD MINDS

JIM WEICHERDING

What makes us Motorhead’s? Is it genetics? Is it how we were raised? Is it something we grow into or is it just a frame of mind? I can honestly say, “I don’t know.” All I do know is, “I’m a Motorhead!” and I’m proud of it. Not everyone is into fast cars, big trucks and classic vehicles but hey, I’m not into collecting stamps, gardening or video games, so I gotta do something with my time and that’s all about being a Natural Born Motorhead. Since I was a little kid I was always fascinated with muscle cars and big trucks. Loved them! Could not get enough of them. Like many of you reading this article, I was into playing with Matchbox Cars and Trucks in the back yard when the weather allowed and inside my bedroom when the weather didn’t allow for playing in the back yard. I built model cars and trucks every chance I had and had a bedroom full of shelves filled with all of these hand built models. I always asked Santa for these types of toys for Christmas and every single year that’s what I found wrapped under the Christmas Tree or in my Christmas Stocking nailed to the wall somewhere in our parlor. If Santa did not bring me these types of toys and models would I still be a Motorhead today? Not really sure, but I’d like to think so. I didn’t grow up around car people or family members so why was I different than everybody else? It might have been the timeline when I was a kid. It was the sixties! Everything about the sixties automotive era was on television, in magazines, on TV commercials, cruising down the roads and streets across America. I grew up surrounded by these images of power plant muscle cars and trucks. That might have been the driving force behind how I became a Motorhead. It was my environment. It was all around me. I don’t meet a lot of people who were kids in the eighties or nineties that are Automotive Enthusiasts unless they grew up in homes where dad and/or mom was already a Motorhead. My kids became Motorhead’s but that was because I was

a Motorhead. See the connection? I grew up as a kid in the sixties. Everything was Muscle Cars and Fast Trucks. So, it pulled me in because that was the overall environment of that decade.

Younger Motorhead’s of today are primarily Motorhead’s because they grew up as kids where their home life was built around that same environment. If this is a trend, I hope it doesn’t play out the way I expect it to play out decades down the road. When being a Motorhead is a thing of the past because time erases those of us who are avid Car and Truck Enthusiasts and we no longer cruise the streets, roadways and highways of America. Let’s try and help avoid that. This Christmas, go buy your kids and grandkids Car and Truck presents. Buy them models of cool classic cars, muscle cars and trucks. Help them build those models together. Play with toy cars and trucks with them on their bedroom floors. Put away the video games and turn off the television and electronics and teach kids how to play again. Like we did when we were kids. Buy them car and truck Coloring Books and Posters. Especially nostalgia themes with a lot of classic cars and trucks. Influence these kids to go outside and play with their cars and trucks. Have your kids help

you work on your own car or truck when it needs repairs or upgrades. Get their hands dirty by doing something they might not do on their own. Help build a whole new generation of Motorhead’s and do it this Christmas with purchased items that are automotive related. We need to keep the Motorhead’s of America growing and thriving into the next generation. Have a great Christmas and stay safe on our roadways during the holiday season. “Buckle Up!”

EFI Conversion with Karl’s East Coast Speed - Part 3 In previous issues we talked about retiring your old and worn out carburetor and making some choices about what Electronic TBI system to use. We also talked about upgrading the fuel system to work with the fuel injection and possibly needing a cam swap to make the whole combination perform its best. There is one more piece of the puzzle that helps these types of systems really shine. The ignition system. As it stands now the fuel system and ignition system of your vehicle are completely separate. The carb gets the fuel and air into the engine and then the ignition system lights the air/fuel mixture. The TBI systems from FAST and MSD can operate the same way and just control the fuel like your old carb did, but they also can control ignition timing. What this means is doing away with the old distributor and its mechanical

advance mechanism and letting the EFI computer control when the spark is delivered to the cylinders. The EFI will control engine timing from idle to redline. Timing is a very effective way to control the idle of an engine, the ECU can make hundreds of corrections every second by adding or taking away spark advance. You can also make your own advance curve, no more dealing with rusty weights and springs inside the distributor. To make this all work your factory distributor will need to be replaced, but if you all ready have an aftermarket unit it may be able to be modified to work. You will also need an ignition box like an

MSD 6 or something similar, which most hot rods all ready have anyway.

soon the ECU will have “Learned” how you drive and what it needs to do.

The ignition is technically an optional part of this puzzle, but every system we have done here at the shop has used this method and it really does give the best result. Once you make the decision to go with EFI then going all the way makes sense, without the EFI controlling the timing only half of the system is being utilized.

While the systems “Learn” on their own they can be fine tuned by adjusting air/ fuel ratios for Idle, Cruise and Wide Open Throttle, and if the timing is being controlled then the total timing can also be adjusted. All of these are easily done with the handheld unit in seconds while sitting in the driver seat, no more messing with jets or timing lights under the hood. It’s not mandatory, but if these things are done on a dyno the optimum settings can be found quickly and easily.

After all of the decisions are made and the parts lined up what happens next? The systems are relatively easy to install, but like most things doing it in a way that looks neat and tidy takes time and planning. There are usually less then 10 electrical connections that need to be made, but routing and hiding the wires and the wiring harness takes time and patience. The same is true with the fuel system. Rubber fuel injection hose can be run the entire length of the car, but we only use braided teflon or stainless steel hard line for installs here at the shop, either of these options will be the last fuel lines you buy for the vehicle. The rubber hose has a life cycle and will need to replaced in a few years. Once everything is installed setting up the systems goes pretty quick. They all have some sort of handheld device to program the ECU to your application. Basic questions like engine size, ignition type and desired air/fuel ratios are answered and after setting the fuel pressure the engine should be ready to start. The systems are “Self Learning” and if everything was done properly the vehicle will be ready to drive once it gets up to temperature and the ignition timing is verified. The ECU needs to be at operating temperature for it to “Learn”, and then it needs to be driven in all types of conditions for it fill in all the information it needs to make the engine run its best. After normal cruising for 10 minutes or so then you can start getting more aggressive and

This all sounds great, right?!?! Like everything in life nothing is perfect and there can be challenges to face once the system is up and running. Gone are the old carburetor problems like blown power valves, undersized or oversized squirters and leaky fuel bowls, but there is potential for new issues like sensors that go bad and exhaust leaks that give the O2 sensor false readings. Despite the potential for these new issues the positives far outweigh the negatives. Can you walk out and start your carbureted hot rod at any time or temperature by reaching inside and turning the key? Can you make fuel and timing changes when you are driving down the road? You can do all of that with a properly designed and installed EFI system and get better fuel mileage and better drivability. A lot of information has been written in this 3-part series, you may feel overwhelmed and have more questions or you may want to hang on to your carburetor after reading all of this. Ether way we are here to help. As always give the shop a call if you want to talk about installing EFI on your car/truck or need us to rebuild your carburetor. Karl’s East Coast Speed 401-737-7932

TESLA’S CYBERTRUCK By MIKE GALLO Elon Musk has turned the automotive world upside down with the creation of his electric cars and SUV’s. It’s been some time and in development that he has been working on a pickup truck and it is finally here.

466 Colman St., New London, CT www.netruckandoffroad.com

Introducing the TESLA CYBERTRUCK that will be available for 2021. This truck deviates from the conventional bed and cab on frame pickup. Although this design is wildly different it is extremely functional and strong.

Anything for your truck we have it! what happens! company SPACE X. What’s your opinion of this CYBERTRUCK? All of the manufacturers will be coming out with eletric vehicles in the short future. Times are changing…and quick.

The base model CYBERTRUCK will be selling for around $39k which will have a 250 mile range and the top of the line model will sell for $69k with a 500 mile range. Did I mention these trucks are all eletric? Crazy right? The vehicles will be able to be raised or lowered with a button and will have a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds and be able to haul 3,500 pounds of payload. Very impressive to say the least. And by the time the truck is released it will have a self-driving feature for an additional $7k in case you would like to be driven by your truck while you relax. TENNESSEE CAT By ROB MAY

This 1978 Mercury Cougar XR-7, owned by Andy Corum, makes its den in Dickson, TN – just West of Nashville. Central California Mercury Club CCMC’s director Rob May relays the ’78 Cat’s story continuing the Blue Mercury theme in 2019! Andy is a former band director in the public schools. “I now manage an O’Reilly Auto Parts in Clarksville, TN. However, I’m still active as a musician, trumpet player and conductor in my spare time. When I’m

not at work, I’m involved deeply in directing the Brass Band of Nashville – which I have done for ten years.”

The musician purchased his first classic when he was 15 – a 1966 Mustang 6 cyl coupe. “I restored the car because I always had in interest for history.” Andy mostly owned Mustangs, but he branched out into the larger Fords. “After the first ’66 – I had a 1967 GT 390 Mustang fastback, a 1965 289 Mustang convertible, a 1968 289 coupe, a 1986 SVO Mustang, a 1967 Fairlane two door hardtop, a

1971 Ranchero GT, a 1978 Thunderbird and this 1978 Cougar.” While considering getting the Thunderbird painted, a bad experience at a local Maaco led to the Cat. “Somebody sent me this Blue Cougar from Facebook marketplace. It was nearly the same color as my ‘67 fastback which I loved. This Cat was cheap, and I sold the Thunderbird for what I paid for the Cougar.” Thus, he now owned a more upscale vehicle that didn’t need paint. Restoration was not needed on this Cat. It is a numbers matching, original drive train - 351W (D9AE block, which is 1979) with C4 trans. Per Marti report, this Mercury is a late production ‘78. “I’ve done nothing major to the car other than to get it running right as the Cougar sat for a long time. Replaced items include exhaust, hoses (the car still had the factory hoses), fuel tank, rebuilt the carb, put brakes all the way around, starter, and radiator.” The big Blue Car is well optioned. “It’s equipped with the upgraded suspension – which is nice. To me, it’s odd to have power windows along with no power locks or power seat. I try to commute in the Cat and drive it at least once a week. The car drives exceptionally well. The air is cold, the cruise control works, and all options are fully operational.” The color (Bright Blue Glamour Paint) is what sold Andy on the Cat. “It’s just beautiful, and you don’t see this color much. I get the most compliments on the color for sure.” Andy loves to drive it because “it’s a great car.” He also has to endure the unknowing comments - “Hey, Nice Lincoln!!” or the other day “Dude – awesome Jag,” Ugh. Andy is a member of the Cougar Club of America CCOA and the Tennessee Cougar Club.

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

By MIKE GALLO It wasn’t that long ago that the import cars took a backseat to American Muscle. And the Imports weren’t really respected by their American counterparts. For awhile they lacked horsepower that would have been equivalent to other cars. But things have changed within the last 10 years. The import cars are coming through with some pretty impressive horsepower numbers. Take for instance Jay Natale’s 2016 Nissan GTR. Sporting a hand-built V6 motor with twin turbos and an automatic paddle shifted transmission coupled with all-wheel drive from the factory, these cars are downright impressive. In stock form these cars will give any American Car a run for its money if not beat them. Of course that isn’t enough for some people and Jay happens to be one of them. Jay figured that if a good amount of horsepower was good even more would be better. With that said Jay got a full Visconti flex fuel system with an upgraded fuel pump. Visconti fuel basket with ETS intakes and ETS downpipes…dual Tial blow off valves and a stainless steel Army Trix valved exhaust. He also added a set of Advan GT

wheels wrapped in Nitto r888 drag radials this car has also been custom-tuned to take full advantage of all the aftermarket parts. It also has a set of Bilstein damptronic struts at all four corners. If you noticed the car also has a custom carbon fiber wrapped roof to accent all the other carbon fiber parts that Adorn the body. This car gets looks everywhere it goes. And did I mention Jay actually had a Ferrari before this car and got rid of it to get this GTR. That in itself has to tell you something.

I was lucky enough to be thrown the keys and told to take the car for a ride and give it a thorough romping. I have had fast cars my whole life and currently have a C6 ZO6 Corvette I also have recently driven a Hellcat Challenger with an upgraded pulley and tune. After driving around the GTR for a little bit I decided to see how fast it was and I have to tell you it did not disappoint me at all. With the all-wheel drive and drag radials the car planted me in the seat and kept pulling as I fed it throttle. To say I was impressed was an understatement. The raw power of the twin-turbocharged V6 motor is utterly amazing and the sounds that come out of the ARMY TRIX exhaust is insane. Did I mention how good the blow off valves sound? With the allure of being such a fast car and also having rear seats I must tell you I am very tempted to get one of these cars and get rid of my Corvette. This car would make a unbelievable Street racer as it hooks and goes and has an insane top end. But we wouldn’t do anything illegal now would we? No matter what you have to say about Imports you have to give them their respect nowadays. And if you’re foolish enough to think that you simply can beat one based on what imports used to be back in the day you are sadly mistaken and will quickly be shown what GTR tail lights look like while your car is spinning tires and the GTR is accelerating and pulling away from you. 36| Motorhead Magazine - December 2019

I have always loved all cars and have owned my fair share of imports as well. Maybe you know somebody with one of these cars that you can go for a ride in and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. That howl of that motor is intoxicating so give it a try and let me know what you think. Jay has done a great job with this car and I’m very grateful for being able to give it a test drive. Well this has to come to an end my Motorhead friends... so until next time keep the wheels spinning and keep the shiny side up.

SPEEDWAY UPDATE

THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK CELEBRATES 2019 NASCAR CHAMPIONS AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK THOMPSON, Conn. -- After a 10-event schedule that included five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions and countless touring series classes, Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park crowned NASCAR champions and honored special award winners on Sunday afternoon, with the annual awards banquet at the Clubhouse.

Owen, Troy Talman and Ronnie Williams finished the top five. Also honored, Corey Barry, Adam Gada, Paul LaPlante, Justin Albernaz and Kyle James wrapped the top 10. His second Late Model championship might have included a rough patch in the summer months, but William Wall wasn’t going to let it slip from his fingertips. Wall’s sixth-place finish in the finale

In the Sunoco Modifieds, Keith Rocco celebrated his eighth career track championship, extending his lead with the most in the history of the Connecticut oval. Rocco earned four wins – three in

points events and the other in the 10-lap sprint as part of the Sunoco Modified 20/20. Rocco entered the finale with a comfortable lead and left the Sunoco World Series with a 36-point winning margin. The title also tied Rocco with Joe Kosiski for the most NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I track titles, with 17. Behind Rocco, on the heels of two wins of his own with car owner Dan Avery, Woody Pitkat celebrated his second-place points finish, while Todd 42| Motorhead Magazine - December 2019

national championship in 2019. Alongside it, Narducci celebrated Thompson’s SK Light Modified title at the awards banquet, after earning seven wins in 10 races, and scoring victories in 11 of 15 for the division over the last two years. Narducci will celebrate his NASCAR crown in Charlotte, North Carolina, next weekend.

earned him the title by a mere four points, capturing him the crown for the second time in the last four years. Behind him, Rookie of the Year winner Derek Gluchacki, who scored his first career victory in the finale, settled for second, while Mark Jenison was third. Woody Pitkat, who earned a division-high three wins, was fourth, and Matthew Lowinski-Loh fifth. Brian Tagg, Paul Charette, Rick Gentes, Ryan Morgan and 2018 champion Nick Johnson rounded the top 10. Bryan Narducci quickly is becoming one of the top rising talents in the country, as the Colchester, Connecticut, driver sealed his second straight NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division III

Behind him in the final SK Light Modified standings, Albert Ouellette, Wayne Burroughs Jr., John O’Sullivan and Nathan Pytko rounded the top five. Anthony Marvin, Mikey Flynn, Brett Gonyaw, Steven Chapman and Alexander Pearl finished the top 10. Kyle Gero wasn’t going to let anyone take the Limited Sportsman title from his grasp, as the Uncasville, Connecticut, native earned his first career title in a consistent season. He didn’t visit Victory Lane, but won by five points over two-time champion Shawn Monahan. The path for Gero wasn’t an easy one, but his top five finishes, and clean nose, helped him officially celebrate the crown on Sunday. Monahan was second, followed by Ryan Morgan, Corey Fanning and Jason Chicolas.

also honored Rookie of the Year winners and Most Improved drivers for the 2019 season. In the Mini Stocks, a fifth-place finish in points earned Russ Barboza the Rookie crown, while Jared Roy scored the Most Improved Driver award.

Tied for fifth, Meghan Fuller was sixth, while Brent Gleason, Al Stone, Ryan Waterman and Scott Sundeen were the top 10. In a Mini Stock finale that went down to the final lap of the season, Doug Curry captured the Mini Stock title, and celebrated an emotional night at the banquet. Curry lost his father just after the Sunoco World Series and dedicated the champi-

onship to him. His path to a first championship at Thompson came in his first year of competing at the .625-mile track. The Michalski brothers, Steve and Scott, tied for second, while Jared Roy and Russ Barboza were fourth and fifth. Behind them, Charles Canfield, Ian Brew, David Trudeau, Evan Bourgeois and Joe Bavolacco were the top 10.

After scoring his first win, Derek Gluchacki captured Late Model Rookie honors, while Matthew Lowinski-Loh used his fifth-place points finish to score the Most Improved Driver. Jordan Hadley earned the Rookie award in the Limited Sportsman, with Meghan Fuller hoisting the Most Improved award, after heading into the finale in the contention for the title. In the Sunoco Modifieds, Adam Gada was crowned Most Improved, while Corey Barry celebrated the Rookie award. TRI TRACK OPEN MODIFIED SERIES ANNOUNCES 2020 SCHEDULE SIX-RACE SLATE INCLUDES FOUR DIFFERENT TRACKS By KYLE SOUZA

Last year, it was Silk who held the checkered flag at ‘The Place To Race.’

SEEKONK, Mass. -- Tri Track Open Modified Series officials announced a six-race schedule for the 2020 season on Tuesday, with races spreading across four different tracks, and two states in New England.

The high-banks of Monadnock welcome the series for the second time on Saturday, August 15, before the champion is crowned at Seekonk for the third straight year. The popular Haunted Hundred is scheduled Saturday, October 24, putting a seal on the New England racing season. A chaotic 2019 finish saw Hirschman and Silk tangle racing for the lead in the final corner, with Chase Dowling driving by to win, and Ronnie Williams hoisting the title. The Haunted Hundred also includes the championship event for the Pro All Star Series, and a Late Model Showdown.

The schedule includes a mix of staple events -- like Seekonk Speedway’s Open Wheel Wednesday and Star Speedway’s SBM 125 -- along two trips to Monadnock Speedway, a return visit to Claremont Speedway and a championship finale Haunted Hundred back at Seekonk, in what has quickly become a compelling day of racing. Tri Track Open Modified Series managing partners Wayne Darling and Ed Bennett worked together with series officials and tracks across the region to provide a schedule for some of the top modified race teams in the country to compete for sizeable purses. The two partners are looking forward to leading the series forward with a firm base already in place. “I appreciate the tremendous amount of time Wayne put in, working with the tracks juggling their schedules and other touring series schedules to come up with the Tri Track schedule for 2020,” Ed Bennett, Managing Partner of the Tri Track Open Modified Series, said. The schedule opens in Winchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday, May 2, when the series visits Monadnock Speedway for a 100-lap event. In a September visit to the high-banks last year, Chase Dowling was victorious -- his first of two straight wins to end the season. The track produces sideby-side racing throughout the field with its tight corners. For the second straight year, Tri Track visits Claremont Speedway in Claremont, New Hampshire, for a 100-lap special on Memorial Day weekend.

The Sunday, May 24, main event will put drivers to the test at a track where home track experience has proven to win out before, when Mike Willis Jr. won his first Tri Track event in 2018. Last year, it was Matt Hirschman scoring his first of two wins in what was the season opener. Tradition continues at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday, July 1, as Tri Track headlines the 16th annual Open Wheel Wednesday at the Massachusetts oval with $10,000 up for grabs. Past champions of the event include Hirschman and Ron Silk, two drivers that are well-recognized as some of the top modified drivers in the region. New for 2020, Tri Track will be joined by the NEMA Lites, for their Dave Steele Memorial Classic, and the 350 Supers, making their first appearance at Seekonk. It should create quite the night of openwheel racing for race fans. Star Speedway, a quarter-mile oval in Epping, New Hampshire, is well-known for their SBM 125, and the series once again spearheads the event for 2020. In eight previous prestigious events, just four drivers have been to victory lane – with Hirschman leading the list as a four-time winner.

Additional information regarding support divisions at each track will be available soon, along with pre-registration and further updates. Follow the series via social media on Facebook, Twitter, and our new Instagram page, to find out more.

2020 TRI TRACK OPEN MODIFIED SERIES SCHEDULE: Sat. May 2: Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, N.H. Sun. May 24: Claremont Speedway, Claremont, N.H. Wed. July 1: Seekonk Speedway, Seekonk, Mass. Sat. July 25: Star Speedway, Epping, N.H. Sat. August 15: Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, N.H. Sat. October 24: Seekonk Speedway, Seekonk, Mass.

Cruisin’ Winter Blues JIM WEICHERDING

501 Main St. Pawtucket, RI 02860

I know, I know. It’s December. We hate it, but hey, at least it’s Christmas time, correct? In another month, after the Christmas tree is dragged out to the curb and all of the Christmas decorations are balled up and crammed into big storage boxes, all we have to look forward to for the next couple of months is snow, cold and winter travel hazards that keeps us from what we really love; Cruisin’ and Car Shows. Every stinkin’ year we have to deal with this weather situation that keeps us inside our homes, work and garages wishing it was nice outside so we could escape the humdrum life of waiting for spring to finally arrive and release us from the clutches of winter in New England. Hopefully, the winter will pass quickly. It’s November right now and the day after Thanksgiving, and I’m already feeling those cabin fever blues while I write this article. Most of you reading this article are in it for the hobby, but I’m in it much deeper than that. This is my life. I live, breathe, sleep, eat and dream about cars and trucks and the car show scene. When winter arrives I’m at a loss. If I couldn’t write about cars and trucks or sit down at my drawing table and illustrate them I’d go crazy. Good thing we have Motorhead Magazine around throughout the year or we’d probably all go crazy. Hoods will be popping up soon and as far as I’m concerned the car show and cruise night season does not end the last week of October every year. Most of us are already planning, scheduling and working on the 2020 Cruisin’ Car Show Season and that is what helps make our world go round. We are automotive enthusiasts with a passion for this hobby, culture and lifestyle. There are only 120,000,000 automotive enthusiasts across America and winter or not, that passion does not falter. It survives the worst snowstorm or blizzard Mother Nature can throw at us during the winter months. Spring will be here soon and so will our next Cruisin’ Car Show Season. Have a great Christmas and New Year from all of us here at Motorhead Magazine. Stay tuned for 2020. It should be a great year for all of us!

OUTLAW cruises down the back roads still trying to avoid law enforcement that may still be hot on Etch’s trail. The GTO starts to dry off as the skies begin to clear of the dark storm clouds. The rain has completely stopped and the street puddles are starting to evaporate leaving dry pavement in its place. OUTLAW rides much easier on dry roads and streets a lot better than on wet roads and streets. Etch looks into his rear view mirror and sees no traffic or police cars behind him. No oncoming traffic and nobody following behind him. Etch is now looking for the nearest highway on ramp but that could be a long way off. As he drives through a four way intersection Etch glances to his right and sees two police cars approaching fast with

their overhead lights flashing and sirens blaring. He mats the gas pedal and OUTLAW lunges ahead with accelerated speed. The two pursuing police cruisers rapidly close in behind the black GTO but Etch is already four steps ahead of them and knows what he has to do next to avoid being captured and arrested. OUTLAW isn’t exactly the easiest vehicle to pursue and stop and the area police departments are fully aware of Etch’s driving capabilities. This has got to be the longest chase scene in the history of chase scenes and Etch would contact (Ripley’s Believe It, Or Not) or the (World Book of Records), if he only had five minutes to find them online and submit his story for review. Even the longest chase in the history of feature movies only lasted about

an hour, if that. Etch shakes his head from side to side in disgust knowing that all of this is happening because the government can’t leave well enough alone and tries to dictate how we live our lives. Taking away our freedom to drive classic cars and trucks on America’s roadways and forcing us to install restrictor plates to reduce horsepower is unAmerican. Banning these vehicles from being driven is just wrong and turning a law-abiding citizen with no prior criminal record into an Outlaw because he won’t be pushed around is just wrong!

CAT SCRAT

By ROB MAY Over 50 years ago, the first Mercury Cougar Convertible rolled off the line. Rob May of the Central California Mercury Club CCMC, who owns a 1969 Cougar standard hardtop, reached out to the North East USA region to find the owner of this 1969 Convertible Cat. Robert Fredericks, nicknamed Bobby Rocker by the N.Y. music community, is a DJ/Lead Singer and a full-time calibration technician. He recently married the love of his life, wife Jeri Lou, who shares his den with his Mercury in Rochester, NY. (Photographers for this article include Jeri Lou). Rocker’s 1st cool Cat was a hard-earned triple-black 1969 Mercury Cougar convertible that he purchased in High School with his own money that he saved up throughout his childhood either working as a golf caddie, pumping gas, cutting lawns or odd jobs. Since that convertible, he has let two other Cougars slip through his claws. Rocker not only owns “Cat Scratch Fever” but he has also collected a few Continued Next Page 52| Motorhead Magazine - December 2019

TCH FEVER sweet “Rare” Big Block Ford and Big Block Mercury cars. December’s featured Cat was previously owned by Rocker’s supervisor at work. “My Boss said he heard I was a car guy. When we met for the first time, he showed a picture of his ’69 Cougar convertible.” Rocker immediately pleaded his case as to why it needed to be his garage. “This Kitty had great potential but was in need of some major TLC…Faded paint, no brakes, carb needed rebuild, etc.” Rocker closed the deal and immediately tuned it up. Wet sanding and buffing out the paint was the next order of business on this 68K miles Mercury. His good friends also helped with the engine work. “It was destiny that I now own it. My boss saw it recently and remarked he sold it to the right guy to finish that car”. After several years of constant upgrading, it’s now full of “Cattitude”. While the Eliminator package was also first offered in 1969, no Convertible Cats were built with the Eliminator package. Robert added some signature Eliminator tribute parts to his Mercury including hood scoop and front & rear spoiler. Using similar graphics, he custom designed a “Cat Scratch Fever” decal which now highlights the rear wing. Rocker drives over 2,000 miles each year on it to cruise nights, car shows and top down day trips. The Cougar was built to drive, yet it has won many trophies. He is a member of Street Machines of Rochester, NY and International Mercury Owners Association IMOA. “This Cat runs and drives anywhere with power and luxury, turning heads everywhere it prowls.” Rocker said driving his “Cat Scratch Fever Cougar” makes him feel like he is 18 years old again.

READERS RIDES

ROGER’S SALEEN MUSTANG

JIM WEICHERDING

When you think about Mustangs a lot comes to mind. One thing is for certain; you are going to be thinking about Saleen. Seriously, who wouldn’t be thinking Saleen when you think about Mustangs? This particularly Saleen Mustang is owned by Burrillville resident, Roger Fortune. It is a 1986, #22, Saleen Mustang and it’s one of the nicest vehicles I have ever seen in the area. Roger takes care of his ride and with a strong background in vehicle repairs that range from mechanical, to body and paint work, it is no wonder his rides are this well maintained. This Saleen Mustang features a 302 engine under the hood with 113 thousand miles. It also has a 5-Speed transmission that gets things moving quickly between the engine and the rear end. This ride also features 1987 4-Wheel disc 5 lug upgrades. The 1986 Saleen Mustang was manu-

flo fit seats and is mostly stock from the factory. This Saleen Mustang is one of the very first Mustangs manufactured because anyone who knows anything about Saleen Mustangs knows that 1986 was the first year of this vehicle production. Creb Engines recently built a 347 stroker forged bottom end AFR heads trick flow camshaft built for boost. Roger will also be installing a Saleen intake manifold and Paxton period correct supercharger for some added feature fun behind the steering wheel and on the road.

Another nice feature on this READERS RIDES vehicle are the 1989 Saleen ARE 5 Star Wheels. The interior features Saleen Catalog grey leather

The Advanced Auto & Burrito Bowl of East Providence Car Show

MIKE GALLO With the close of the known car season coming to an end it’s always nice to look forward to those last few car shows. Take for instance the Advanced Auto and Burrito Bowl of East Providence R.I. sponsored car show that took place on October 26th 2019. This car show was a ton of fun and was an astounding example of what can be put together in a short amount of time as this was concocted in a matter of just two weeks. The owner Eddie of the Burrito Bowl in East Providence brought his brother Allen to DJ and also Eddie bought all of the trophies for the winners of the car show. There were many great cars in attendance and a few motorcycles to say the least. East Providence has a lot of car enthusiasts that were more than happy to come down and show off their vehicles in the last few days before the end of the year. There was something for everybody… they had imports and a bunch of new and old domestic cars. There was plenty of American Muscle to go around from a ‘57 Chevrolet and a few late ‘60s Chevelles. The Burrito Bowl did a great job and handed out some of their amazing food for free. I had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant on quite a few occasions and what they offer is utterly better than any other burrito type place

in the state. The music from the DJ was upbeat and kept the crowd going for the entire afternoon. Everybody there seemed to have a great time as they were all checking out each other’s vehicles and venturing inside Advanced Auto for great deals on whatever they might have needed. They also had a trunk or treat for the little kids to come and get some free candy before Halloween.

The kids were more than happy to show off their costumes and check out the cars and pose with some of them. My good friend Russell had a big hand in putting on this car show and I was more than happy to come down and cover it as I knew that all of my Motorhead friends would love to see what was going on in the pages of our great magazine. From what I understand Russell and his brothers Eddie and Alan will be putting on some more shows in 2020. I know for one that I will be attend-

ing. I had a great time and hopefully you will check out next year’s show for yourself. Before you know it our cars will be getting used a little bit less due to Rhode Island’s and the East Coast great weather to come. So once again congratulations go out to the managers of ADVANCED AUTO and the BURRITO BOWL for such a well organized event!! Think warm thoughts for now and get your cars ready for next season. Until next time gearheads!!

AUTOMOTIVE What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use. When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

Visit us online at jandlcustomupholstery.com

401-692-6545 508-954-5602

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Parts retailer.

Honesty and integrity are what it takes to get the job done right.
