2021 OUTLAW 10.50 CHAMPIONS ANOTHER SEASON IN THE BOOKS

After a 2020 season that was filled with disarray and uncertainty, it was truly a blessing to be able to get back on track (pun intended) and have fun with those we aﬀectionately call our racing family. An incredible amount of credit and gratitude

One of my favorite classes at New England Dragway has always been the Outlaw 10.50 series. With a “heads up” Pro-Tree start and five index class that fit literally everyone, the excitement is oﬀ the charts throughout a ten-week period. Anything can happen and anyone can rise to the top, especially this year where we saw some new faces on top of the proverbial totem pole… Continued Next Page

TRUE STREET 12.50- One of the best Cinderella stories in the history of Outlaw 10.50 came in the 12.50 index this season. After finishing “runnerup” in the first four races of the year, Scott Almstrom headed into the final week in second place behind multi-time Champion Ron Childs. For Almstrom to steal the Championship this year Childs would have to be eliminated immediately in Round 1. It happened!! Then Almstrom would have to win every single round that day. It happened!! Scott Almstrom did the IMPOSSIBLE in 2021 to become your True Street Champion. REAL STREET 11.50- This was one of the toughest indexes to watch during the final weeks because you had no idea who to cheer for. There were just so many awesome people packed in to this one index that all you could do was sit back and wait to see who would end up on top. Eventually the man they call “Fireball” Ralph Blackburn would take top honors but it was not an easy fight against runner up Gene Hubert and Patti Decastro.

Champ Andy Decastro as he secured his third straight Championship in Fast Street. But aside from that the other story in this index was the two rising stars Michelle Sanford and Jack Sandahl, who absolutely killed it on the ProTree. Look for one of these kids to make a move in 2022. SUPER STREET 9.50- Only ten points separated 1st and 2nd place at the end of Super Street. Former Champion Gregg Boudreau fought hard, winning the final race but it wasn’t enough to overtake Steven Montero Jr. and his immaculate Pontiac Grand Prix. It was also nice to see tons of new faces in this class that will hopefully continue to show up next year. WILD STREET 8.50- The usual suspects battled it out in Wild Street, as Jon Sandahl and Bill Sanford had countless battles to determine who would stand proud after ten weeks. At the end it was Bill Sanford who would once again be preparing his speech for the annual Awards Banquet.

1957 Chevy 210 ‘Project X 2’ Owner and car builder, Millo Bertini has always been a car guy. Once taken with the car movie era of the 70’s & 80’s, these movies played in a loop for more than ten years at his home garage, as car club members, friends and family passed through. Now with his own restoration business, nicknamed ‘The Shop’, has finished ‘The Project X 2’ build, with restorer and close friend George ‘Mugsy’ Romano, in celebration of the 1980 “Hollywood Knights” movie. Always knowing he would do the Project X car, it finally found him last year. A straight, pristine, priced right, in-town vehicle that had been in storage since 1973. He just looked at it and knew it would be yellow, with a blown small block. Gary Dyer was tracked down to supply the exact super charger as used in Popular Hot Rodding Magazine’s Project X. The team forewent the 4-speed to go with a Liberty 5-Speed. They finished the driveline with a Ford 9 Inch Spool.

Side note: horsepower on the dyno surpassed 640 hp. Millo’s final words on this project: “Now if only to find Michelle Pfeiffer”.

SCRAPTONA By ROB MAY

Scraptona, the name of this 1969 Dodge Charger, is owned by Chris Palmer of Macomb Michigan. He purchased the car from TredWear on November

15th, 2020. Michael Hunt and Lee Clayton, the owners of TredWear, displayed this car at SEMA 2018 in Las Vegas for its first main event. Their business oﬀers tire graphics that can be applied to any tire to dress them up. The perfect opportunity to advertise your product is creating custom cars. Here

is a glimpse of the basic background story. Initially, a 2001 Rocket dirt-track chassis was picked to be the platform of their new car. However, the measurements of the chassis didn’t match the Charger. Therefore, they decided to form a chassis based upon the Dodge body (what remained of it) and utilize the mechanical items from the dirt car frame including the Wilwood wide-five hubs. Buried among trees in North Alabama, the 1969 Charger body was already well stripped. Fortunately, the remaining pieces were in decent shape. TredWear decided to design a wing car. A fiberglass Superbird nose and wing

were acquired from Janak Repros of Spring Texas. The louvered windows are a relatively new product that TredWear began oﬀering in 2019. Displaying its heritage in NASCAR, the R5-P7 engine was chosen instead of a crate engine available from Dodge. The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first

Corvette vs Mustang Bay State Corvette Club’s Annual Showdown By ED YESSAIAN The month of October, in New England, means different things to different people. But in the Drag Racing world it means crisp, cool air and the hopes of hitting some new personal bests before that brief hiatus we call Winter. Part of me dreads the month of October because I know the season is winding down. However, there’s one event I always look forward to and that is Bay State Corvette Club’s Annual “Corvette vs Mustang” Shootout. The first couple years of this event I always had some form of mishap that kept me out of the action but the past two years I have been able to attend and it has rapidly become one of my favorite races of the year. The majority of the attendees belong to either the Bay State Corvette Club or the Mustangs of Massachusetts. Both groups have some amazing people and some even more amazing cars. For 2021 I was interested to see if any of the Bay State guys would show up with C8’s, which they did, including the event organizer Rocco Derrigo who carried his 26| Motorhead Magazine - December 2021

brand-new Vette to a Runner-Up finish. The event was split into two classes. Pro and Street, to give everyone a fair shake. I had originally planned to run the Pro Class with my 1994 Continued Next Page

the losing end of a run with my buddy Keith Varin, who would be the last Mustang standing in the Street Class before falling prey to a Corvette. The final in Street would be Rocco Derrigo vs Eddie Whyte, with Whyte taking the WIN. Best reaction time for the class was Brenda Scafidi who helped cap off a clean sweep for the Corvette Team in the Street Class. The Pro Class however, was captured by Mustangs of Massachusetts member Brian Stewart in his immaculate Fox Body. Stewart would face Vinny Tessitore, who was piloting a car he owned for only 4 days but had no problem getting familiar with. Tessitore also captured Best Reaction Time for the Pro Class, giving the Mustang Team all the honors in Pro Class.

Mustang GT, but the Sunday before this event I blew the transmission so while the darling wife was asleep, I stole her 2003 Mustang GT (Motorhead Reader’s Rides February 2020) and ran it in the Street Class. NASCAR announced the full NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour calendar for the 2022 season on Wednesday and JDV Productions is pleased to announce the organization will return to promote two races for the new year.

Both the Jennerstown and Monadnock events will include local track support divisions to join the show. The Jennerstown event will include additional divisions compared to the 2021 edition of the race, while the Monadnock race will be headlined by special races for the track’s local NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series divisions. Jennerstown is set for 150 laps, with Monadnock set for 200 circuits.

Three dates on the series schedule are listed as to be announced as of Wednesday. By Larry Quintal Like most of us, we all started with a dream of owning that special muscle car. John Fernandes of Taunton is no different. John started doing auto upholstery at a young age and, little by little, that lead to learning mechanics. He was on his way to ITT Tech but at the last minute decided to go in another direction. John felt if he worked on cars every day, he would not have the excitement of working on his own. He loved everything about auto mechanics and wanted to keep it fun. Now for the unbelievable part of this story. John was expecting a child and at the time he owned a 1969 427 Tri Power convertible Vette. He now needed a muscle car with a back seat to carry his precious cargo, his daughter. The search began on eBay. He found a 1969 convertible Camaro 4 speed which just happened to be an official pace car. After a few emails with the original owner the deal came together. One little glitch. The owner had taken a deposit from another person who was just going to flip the car while John’s plans were to do a total restore and keep the car. John said, “Well, no big deal” as long as he could get the title. The owner then dropped a bomb on John and told him, “You just don’t understand. This car has all the original paperwork, window sticker, build sheet, protecto-plate etc., and better yet, this car was believed to be the car that was to be delivered to Mario Andretti who won the Indy 500 in 1969.” For those who don’t know, when a driver wins the Indy 500 they get two choices. One, is to have the pace car from that race, or to have one delivered to the dealership of their choice. As the dealership in Allentown, PA was just twenty minutes from where Mario resided, it makes sense it would be delivered there. John scratched his head and said, “I don’t understand.” The owner said, “I was in Boody Chevrolet in Allentown PA trading in my 1967 Firebird 4-speed coupe for a brand-new Z-28. When all of a sudden, the car trailer pulled in with this pace car and I just knew I wanted it.” As previously stated, this car was believed to be tied to Mario Andretti as a gift for winning the Indy 500 that year. All the dates and info pointed in that direction… Mario lived a few miles from the dealership in PA, the car was shipped to that dealership, and the owner of the dealership said the car was going to someone special. This car is believed to be the most documented pace car known to exist per the Pace Car Club of America. Fast forwarding to 2003, the car was bought sight unseen from the original owner who now lived in Florida. John ended up with the car along with all of the paperwork. The day he received the car, it also came with the Blue Yenko Camaro from the Fast and Furious Part II movie, which John also bought. Picture the car trailer pulling into John’s driveway with the two cars he bought, 34| Motorhead Magazine - December 2021

his eyes seeing them for the very first time. Minutes after the pace car was unloaded, John wasted no time. It was taken apart for its total restoration. The Yenko was later sold. This 1969 Camaro pace car has an unknown value. Though John is not thinking of selling it at this point, the documentation, and the belief that it should have been in Mario Andretti’s hands, makes it hard to part with.

Hurst Olds. In the future, John may have to decide which cars he will keep, will it be the pace car, the 1970 Rally 350 that John used to drive on Friday and Saturday nights on the streets of Brockton, MA, the 1966 Olds Cutlass, the 1974 Trans-Am or the other pace car he has - a 1972

I asked John, “just how many cars can you possibly keep?” He said, “As long as there is lumber, I can keep adding garages.” We hope you enjoy the photos and documentation. BARN FINDS JIM WEICHERDING

It’s December and that means we have a few months of the dreaded winter season ahead of us. No more classic car and truck shows or cruise nights for us New Englander’s for awhile. Spring isn’t just around the corner. It’s way down the road but we just have to deal with it I guess.

During the upcoming winter season I am always on the lookout for great content I can submit for our faithful readers. That’s why this feature article is titled; BARN FINDS. We live in a region where barn finds are happening practically on a regular basis.

We are out and about traveling down backroads through the rural country area and sometimes we happen upon something sitting in an open barn

door that catches our eyes and attention. Sometimes, it’s a tractor but other times it’s not. Sometimes, it’s a classic car or truck. If, by chance, any of you reading this article do happen to see and purchase a barn find vehicle and would like the automotive world of Motorhead readers to know about it, then just let me know. You can always send me some photos of your cool barn find and some information about that ride and what possessed you to purchase it in the first place. Toys for Tots Shows the Giving in the Car Community

By ALLEN HARRIS, Executive Automotive Society Usually celebrating Christmas before Thanksgiving is highly frowned upon. To even consider putting up a tree is so taboo it could open you up to public criticism via public media. So how do you persuade a bunch of gruff and gritty car guys to throw some reindeer antlers on their cars and drive out with a smile on their face in the cold of November? Easy. Do it for charity! It’s true, every year like clockwork at the beginning of November a group of locations set out boxes for Toys for Tots. Then they set-up associated car meets that support their efforts. Best of all they promote a huge turnout. The first I attended this year was North End Diner. It’s an event that typically attracts droves of performance and luxury vehicles. The toys buckets went three rows deep before the start time of 2 PM even struck. I dropped off my toy and began to enjoy the awesome event as cars continued to roll in. A twin turbo Lamborghini Huracan was stuffed so full of toys that I’m amazed the driver could operate it. At the same time, 2 hours South, Untamed Auto Club’s Toys for Tot show was in full swing. Supported by Detail Garage in Warwick RI, the lot was completely full with some of the area’s best cars. A row of new Supras line up across the building, followed by everything from old school muscle to newer luxury cars full of toys continue to unload like Santa’s sleigh into the waiting bins. By the time they’re done a flatbed truck can hardly contain the toys. As of the time of this writing Detail Garage is still collecting toys. Let’s be honest, the biggest problem with charity efforts is getting the word out. How many of you seek out a charity during the holiday season? In our busy life schedules we barely have limited time to find gifts for 44| Motorhead Magazine - December 2021

our own loved ones so don’t feel guilty, but this is where our car community really shines. Hundreds of thousands of car guys and gals are literally surveilling their mobile phones waiting for an event to pop up. Literally. In the last two years they’ve lived on a famine ration of car shows and events. Show hosts alone have heard the word “no” so much they think it’s their new first name. From mid-week meets to weekend bashers they’ve been gobbling up whatever they can get faster than a famine victim at an all-you-can-eat Continued Next Page

buffet. Then suddenly the year is coming to a close and our mortality starts to come forward. “I only have ‘X’ car seasons left!” And now they feel they need to cram like a college final exam just got popped on them last minute. Bring in Toys for Tots and the idea of Christmas is irrelevant. It could be July and they’d still be bringing a toy, canned food, first born, whatever it takes to fill that empty void that the next 4 months of hibernation represents. These charities have become a welcome part of our lifestyle and even after

Maybe this year we could take a little longer before we put the cars away for winter and use our time to improve the lives of others and in turn add some well needed positive at the same time and prove to our general community that car groups are worth the investment.

the eggnog has worn off, the fact remains that it is just as important to us as the show itself. We welcome them with open arms. Just knowing we’re helping, however small, matters. Along with that brings an awareness that rivals major marketing teams. Shares on every significant media platform, by some that thrive off the attention, means that awareness is flooded to the world. Without the car community there are many charities that I probably would never even knew existed, especially local food banks, shelters and support for the homeless. Traveling Cat

By ROB MAY and CODY ESSER Eliminators are not often known as a Traveling Cat these days due to those Mercury’s value. This Wimbledon White 1969 Cougar is a pleasant exception. While making its den in Belleville, WI with owner Cody Esser and his wife, this Cat travels often. He puts on an excessive amount of miles on his cars since he has a travel blog, Impulsive Traveler Guy, that he pretty much solely road trips. Admittedly his Cougar is not his main point A to point B car; however, it does stretch its legs often. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted a muscle car. I used to plaster my walls with pictures of Mustangs.” Cody came from a big Ford family. He is only 32, making him the next generation being handed the torch for these cars. After college and a short stint at a job in Madison, WI, he was able to move back to his hometown of Marshfield, WI. “I got a good paying job and my own place.” Soon Cody realized that he could finally afford the muscle car he had always wanted. With that, he started his search for a car. “I originally had wanted a Torino and preferably one with a 429 and a 4 speed. I knew I wanted something

rare, but I wasn’t looking to drop a ton of money on a car. The Torino would be my pie in the sky car, but I was open to pretty much any Ford product that was a decent deal.” The nice thing about Marshfield, WI is it’s close to Stratford, WI. There is a body shop\muscle car dealership called Kuyoth’s Klassics. He specializes in 60’s and early 70’s Mustangs. “I looked at a few of his cars and also a few cars listed on Craigslist. My dad would come along with me to look at cars and I remember him being a bit skeptical of me buying an older car. This was 2012 and we were definitely in the second muscle car era. My ultimate goal wasn’t to have the most power, in general I just wanted that old muscle car.” One day on Kuyoth’s lot was this Mercury Cougar. Cody looked at it and first scoffed at it. “I wanted something with a manual transmission. My Focuses were all manuals, and I loved the joy of rowing through the gears. My dad realized this Cougar was an Eliminator. ‘You might want to look up this car, because I think those Eliminators are pretty rare.’ Well I got the VIN number and did look it up.” He found out only 2250 were made. They learned this Eliminator was authentic and not a clone, a rare Cat indeed. Continued Next Page

“One of the reasons I wanted a Torino is I didn’t see many at car shows. The same could be said about Mercury Cougars. The car was in the price range I felt comfortable with, so I got everything in order and bought it.” At 23 years old, he was pretty much always the youngest at car shows with an old muscle car. “A few of my friends bought mid 90s to mid 2000’s Mustangs, so we’d cruise together and go to car shows, but I appeared to be the only Millennial with an old muscle car. My friends and I went to a few cars shows in 2012 and 2013. We also would cruise around during the summer. (Being that we were in Wisconsin, we had to store cars for the winter to avoid salt).” In May 2014, Cody got bored with Marshfield and decided to move to Austin, TX. “I decided to keep my Cougar in Wisconsin as it would be a pain to move it 1300 miles across the country. Also, it would be expensive to store it and, quite frankly, people drive like nuts around Austin so I didn’t want to risk smashing the car. My Cougar would take up residence in my grandma’s garage. I had a job where I had a lot of off time, so I was able to come up 6-8 times a year. Driving the Cougar during the summer was my “Wisconsin treat” and I tried to drive it was much as I could when I visited.” In the meantime, Cody met his wife. “We decided moving back to Wisconsin to be closer to my family would be good as we decided to settle down and start our own family. We decided we’d move to the Madison area. After driving up from Texas, I got the keys to our apartment on February 29, 2020. We all knew what happened a few weeks later. The whole world shut down due to the pandemic. I was pumped to drive the Cougar more during the summer, but that never happened. In September 2020, we closed on house in Belleville, WI. (finally had a garage of my own to park the car). I had my trusted mechanic look it over before I drove it 150 miles from Marshfield to Belleville.” Come to find out, Cody had only driven it about 1,300 miles since he bought it. This summer he has been driving it a bit more including to a couple car

shows. Mini road trips are planned with it. “I live 30 miles from the Illinois border, so I have taken the 60 mile round trip there. Hopefully, I will take a few more little road trips with the Cougar and put them on my blog, Impulsive Traveler Guy. After purchasing the Cat, the frost plugs on the engine were leaking so the motor was pulled out to replace those at O’Brien Automotive in Marshfield, WI, where Cody’s buddy worked and one of the only places he trusts to work on the Cougar. While the motor was out, new oil pan and valve cover gaskets were put on the car. Also, the motor was painted Ford blue. It really freshened things up. “As far as I know, it is a survivor from out West. Since the Eliminator package was introduced in April of 1969, there were only 2250 made as the model year was almost over. They also only made Eliminators in 1970. This Cat sports a 351W 4V mated to an automatic FMX transmission. “I currently try to drive the car a few times a month. My goal is to put a couple hundred miles on a year in order to make sure everything stays lubricated and the seals stay good.” When posting pictures of the Cougar on my blog, Impulsive Traveler Guy, some of the followers suggest that taking it on the cross-country road trips that I do with my Focus. I just laugh when people suggest that.” That would add wear and tear of excessive miles or possible road damage going through some of the roads he goes down. “In 1969, the same year as my car, we put a man on the moon with this technology. In some ways I’m awestruck on what we could accomplish now with the technology we have. Regardless, I love driving this piece of history and preserving it, as well as giving me an appreciation for what we currently have.”
