Meet the Staff... LOUIS CICERONE

Back in 2010 Louis Cicerone started out with a vision, and that was to create something special that would spread a message. Throughout his lifetime, he was family and friend influenced of the start of a brilliant dream by being introduced into the automotive industry. Upon a hospital recovery, he realized that his survival would be a wake up call of greater things to come, one in particular which would be a fast trending publication that would showcase a passion for fellow “Motorheads”. Producing in the smallest state in the US would be nothing of a challenge as Louis’ new publication would spread throughout the entire New England region and now currently is being picked up from coast to coast. While his goal is to highlight some pretty intriguing hotrods, Louis’ passion is to help other small businesses grow while using the interest of automotive talent. To set up an appointment with Louis, you may contact him at Lou@getmotorhead.com or 401-965-9012.

LAUREN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO

Lauren Vernancio, or alternately coined; Lauryn “Hotwheels” Vernancio has been an avid General Motors enthusiast ever since her father introduced this third generation Camaro into her life before she hit the age of double digits. Having passion in her blood for the industry, she took Automotive as an elective at her high school (Cranston East) and made the decision to further her education as a New England Tech graduate in Automotive Technology with High Performance. She earned the nickname of “Hotwheels” at Seekonk Speedway through helping to pit a race team (Driver Crystal Serydynski) and she likes to participate in racing events on and off the track whether it be side by side with other drivers going full throttle, or giving a hand helping others through wrenching or fundraising promotions. Her primary love is her 1987 Trans Am, but she never has less than three vehicles within her threshold. She has been part-time with Motorhead Magazine since 2011 and recently stepped up the game by overseeing business sales growth and productions while retaining the new title of Associate Publisher. If you would like to reach her, you may do so at knighthawkindustries@gmail.com.

CHARLIE “LEADFOOT” HOLMES

Enter Charlie “Leadfoot” Holmes into Motorhead Magazine, who has graced our presence for the past few months as a very helpful sales associate. Now not only is he on the ball, Mr. Holmes also knows his way around that of the wheel. His claim to fame is holding the original number one wheel-stander drivers license ever by the NHRA. He was a superb driver of the “Super Hemi-bug” for eight years and is happy to relate dragster stories with his accounts. Charlie has also been working with individuals in the car buying process by making a name for himself as a personal concierge for consumers of the automotive trade. No vehicles are left off of the lot until they are “Leadfoot Charlie” approved which means that the consumer in mind will be ultimately satisfied and have peace of mind with his various inspection points. If you would like to inquire about expanding your business through advertisement or would like an automotive consultation you may call Charlie at 401-575-7111.

GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR.

When I received my first MatchBox car as a child, I instantly became “obsessed” with cars. I had a collection of cars that could easily span down the Street and back. I would play with these Matchbox cars for hours. Never did I realize the impact it would have on my life today. At the age of 15, my Father purchased my first project vehicle, a 1974 Chevy Blazer which would later become my first Monster Truck known as “ King Kong”. I dedicated 2 years of building this Monster Truck and the timing could not have been better. I was 16 years old and officially a Driver…soon everyone throughout the State knew the “Monster Truck” King Kong” including the Police Departments. I went into business with the experience from Automotive and Auto Body Vocational Tech. classes that I attended during my High School years at Cranston High School West. In addition, my hands-on, self-taught experiences of working on my own projects inspired me at the age of 20 to go into business doing what I loved to do …..working on vehicles. Today I continue to play and work on cars on a daily basis. As Owner/Operator of A Custom Car Stereo Center located at 1174 Atwood Avenue, Johnston, RI, for the past 28 years, I personally service each and every vehicle that comes into my Shop. A Custom Car Stereo Center is a full service shop providing sales, service, and Installation of Car Audio, Alarms, Remote Starters and Window Tinting. I tackle any job from a basic sound system to a Customized system. I have performed services on most vehicles under the Sun today, including, Boats, Golf Carts, All Terrain Vehicles, Motorcycles, Hot Rods and of course Monster Trucks.

JOHN CONTI

John Con My interest in hot rods sparked at a very young age. Back in 1960, I began repairing lawn mowers in my driveway at the age of 8. Around the same me I managed to build a go kart out of my bed frame. At that point it was prey obvious what I was set out to do. I had a strong passion for the automove world so I educated myself any possible way I could, from reading books and magazines, asking quesons to people I had been blessed to have taught me a lot of knowledge I sll use today in my everyday encounters with cars and hot rods. In 1981 I moved from my 2 bay shop on Park Ave in Cranston to my now 5 bay shop on Warwick Ave, also in Cranston. I am grateful to be working with 3 of my 4 children everyday doing what we love-building hot rods. I am blessed with 2 beauful granddaughters, Amara and Annabelle, who make waking up every day a true blessing. I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

ED YESSAIAN

A graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in Markeng and currently Stoneham Ford’s Collision Center Manager. I am proud to say I have been with Motorhead Magazine since the very first issue, over six years ago. I originally met owner Lou Cicerone in his driveway when I was cruising in my SVT COBRA and spoed a bunch of Muscle Cars hanging out at his house. Since then I have met thousands of people that enthusiascally share our automove passion. Whether it’s racing, cruise nights, car shows, or working in the garage I enjoy spending most of my weekends doing something car related, usually racing in New England Dragway’s Outlaw 10.50 series. Along with my wife’s two vehicles, we have become a Four Ford family, with a 2016 F150 FX4, a 2015 Edge AWD, a 2003 Mustang GT Converble, a 1994 Mustang GT Converble. As we head into 2017 I look forward to watching Motorhead connue to grow, and will be thrilled to introduce our readers to my soon to be arriving son Xander. Although Xander will be coming into a house that is currently all Fords, his Grampa Harry had a 1969 Firebird Converble, his Mommy had three Ponacs and so did his Aune Lauryn “Hot Wheels”. So while I myself have become the resident Mustang guru here at Motorhead, there’s a slight chance that my baby boy might be “influenced” towards an LS powered Firehawk or WS6 Ram Air car.

THE XANDER ZONE

A BABY BOY AND HIS HELLCAT By XANDER ANTHONY Many of you may have caught the hint in last month’s Motorhead where writer Ed Yessaian hinted he was expecting a baby boy in the “Meet the Staff ” page. Well on December 20, 2016 I arrived, Xander Anthony Yessaian and immediately set to work to let our readers know where I stand as far as my brand preferences within the Xander Anthony Yessaian automotive world. Everyone knows that my Dad is the authority on anything and everything Mustang. My Grampa Harry, My Mom Kelly, and My Aunt Lauryn Hot Wheels are all Pontiac fanatics. But as many of our readers continuously follow Motorhead one common question pops up- “Where is the LOVE for the Mopars”? Well, readers as the newest member of the Motorhead staff, I have decided to even the playing field for the Mopar guys and bring them the exposure they so rightly deserve. Being only a month old, I have quite a bit of free time on my hands. So while my Dad was at work, I decided to explore the old issues of Motorhead that he had lying around. I was actually surprised to learn that in the September 2010 issue of Motorhead Ed Yessaian was given both an SRT Charger and an SRT Challenger to enjoy for an

entire day. I reviewed his article and back then it seemed like those two vehicles were quite impressive. The SRT Charger he drove had an automatic transmission while the Challenger SRT had the 6-speed option and seemed to be the more enjoyable of the two. Back then both cars featured the 6.1L Hemi engine that boasted 425 horsepower to get the somewhat heavier bodies motivated. Further down the line the cars were updated and improved with the most notable change being that the new engines were now a 6.4L Hemi with 485 horsepower and a smile inducing 475 ft/lbs of torque. But what if even that isn’t enough to quench your thirst for power and performance? Enter the 707 horsepower SUPERCHARGED SRT Hellcat, a completely different animal and one I just had

to see for myself. So it was off to check it out at anonymous source that did not wish to have his vehicle photographed but was glad to share his excitement with us for the afternoon. Obviously because I’m only a month old, I had to ask my Dad to escort me and upon our arrival we were greeted by our good friend. Just simply walking up to the Hellcat, you can tell that it is a different breed altogether. The missing left inner driving light is your first clue, as it has been replaced with an air duct for improved flow that translates into more power. The huge Brembo 5 piston calipers are your next clue, as are the huge 20” wheels that are a necessary evil to fit over the massive front brakes. After a quick walk around I opened the driver’s door and was greeted by a welcoming SRT Laguna Leather seat that was both comfortable and supportive, with proper side bolstering to keep you secured in place during “spirited driving”. Because I couldn’t reach the pedals, the keys were handed to my Dad, Ed Yessaian, who first opted for the black key that tames the Hellcat to a still fun to drive 500hp. With the turn of the key the performance enhanced exhaust roars to life and you can tell immediately from the emitted tone that this particular Challenger has a far more intimidating persona than some of the other trim levels of the same car. Our “Black key” ride concluded rather quickly, as everyone involved was eager for the “Red Key Experience”. At this point I was asked to stay with my Mom and I was left out of the RED KEY ride. Upon his return my Dad couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear as he explained to me the sure joy that the unleashed HELLCAT is capable of inciting. The 650ft/lbs of torque quickly silences those critics who in the past complained of the

Challenger’s somewhat heavier body. It feels surprisingly responsive and balanced and of course in a straight line feels unstoppable. Just driving down the street, the combination of the muscular exhaust tone and the bright red Torred paint turned every single head it passed. On the drag strip I can only imagine the sheer joy it creates, if only I was old enough to rifle this thing down the track. Not to mention adding a couple bolt-on modifications and a Supercharger pulley

that could tack on another 100hp and propel the HELLCAT towards acquiring high 9 second time slips. Being only a month old, I obviously haven’t seen everything that the Muscle car world has to offer, but the Dodge Challenger HELLCAT was one heck of a starting point. Even more exciting is the fact that there is now a rumor on the playground that Dodge is reviving the DEMON nameplate that will adorn a 900hp Challenger model by mid-2018. If the DEMON rumors have any truth to them, you can certainly count on Motorhead’s newest Mopar guy, Xander Anthony to grab you the scoop.

TRACK DAYS Take A Right

RICK LAVIGNE

helmet and you’re good to go. What follows are some of the basics that will apply to any event you attend.

High Performance “Drivers’ Education”

Get a good night’s sleep.

Taking a “right” (and a few lefts too) can be very rewarding. Just ask Jeff Gordon, the recently retired NASCAR champ and now winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona (along with the very talented team of Wayne Taylor Racing). You may not

Track days are “serious fun” and as such you’ll need to be alert. You don’t want to be the guy or gal that’s chugging coffee or Red Bulls. You’ll be excited enough and won’t need the extra stimulus (or dehydration). There will be a lot to absorb

There is nothing more distracting than getting to the track and not having something you absolutely need, so plan carefully. Go to the Drivers Meeting and pay attention! Most events will have two driver’s meetings. The first will cover the day’s schedule, a safety briefing including passing rules and the meanings of the various flags in use. Both seasoned and rookie drivers will attend. Following this meeting the “newbies” will attend their own meeting that will get into more detail on how to have a fun and safe event. These meetings are part of the “serious” side of track days. We’re all there to have fun, but not following the rules can have serious consequences. A great deal of the information is simply good common sense but it’s also critically important that everyone is on the same page. Knowing the passing rules for your group, the flags, how to enter and exit the track safely and other crucial details will assure that you and your fellow drivers have a memorable event for all the right reasons. Slow is the quickest way to Fast Don’t expect to be fast right out of the box. Smooth throttle and brake inputs, heads up driving and determining when to use an early vs. late apex all take time and practice. Most events

qualify to run at the 24, but nothing beats a Track Day at one of our many nearby road courses. RI residents have several track options including Lime Rock Park and Thompson Speedway in CT, Palmer Motor Sports in MA and New Hampshire Motor Speedway. All are within a 2-3 hour drive and all host multiple, well managed events throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall (several track websites and event organizers are listed at the end of this article). Preparing your Car and Yourself All Track Day organizers have extensive information available on their websites that will guide you through the steps leading up the event. For most events you’ll simply need a safe and well sorted car, a good set of tires and brake pads and the right attitude. Add a well-fitting pair of comfortable driving shoes and a Snell 2010 or better 10| Motorhead Magazine - February 2017

and you’ll want to be as calm and focused as you can be when you get out there. Before your event, go online and check out the car preparation requirements for the event. Most of the event organizers will provide you with a detailed list of the car and driver requirements. Some will also require that you bring your car to a certified shop to complete a tech inspection work sheet. Read the rules it carefully and come prepared. Be organized so you can focus on the “fun” part when you arrive at the track. Bring the Right Stuff A jack and stands, some tools and a cooler of food and water along with a folding chair are all that most folks need to cover the care and feeding of both them and their car. Come with a full gas tank and find out if gas will be available at the track. If it isn’t, bring a couple of 5 gallon plastic gas cans.

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

will provide well trained instructors to help you learn these skills. Use them and the early sessions to focus on the best and safest “line” around the track. When possible study track maps and videos prior to your arrival. If you know which way the track goes next you’ll be quicker sooner. ing circuit. Trust me, it’ll be hard to wipe the smile off your face. Have fun, you’ll be back!

It’s not a Race!

CUSTOM EXHAUST

But track days are an opportunity to enjoy our cars at speed. Be courteous and aware of the other cars in your session. Understand that if you and your 500HP supercar can pull away from most cars on the straightaway but they catch you in the turns, God didn’t put them there. They’re faster than you so give a point by so you can both concentrate on clipping that next apex. Speaking of hard to pass, don’t be. If you were in a race, a defensive line might make sense. At a track day, that just makes you a jerk. Be smooth and predictable, listen to your instructor and watch your mirrors. It is a race track after all, and you didn’t come here to drive the same way you do on RT 146. Give it the beans when you feel you can and practice the smooth inputs that our cars much prefer to abrupt suspension upsetting moves. Stay Hydrated Give your body the fluids it needs to deal with the incredible demands you’re putting on it. Anyone who thinks professional drivers aren’t athletes should spend 30 minutes tossing a 3000 lb. sports car around a race track. Drink constantly to maintain your focus. Avoid coffee and sugary drinks. If you feel thirsty, you’re already behind the curve. Rule #1 for a successful track day is for you and your car to leave the track in the same condition you arrived in, so stay alert. If toward the end of the day you’re running out of steam, take a break. There are no trophies or prize money at a track day event, so there’s no need to take unnecessary risks.

The OUTLAW GTO starts to pull away from the following police vehicles but not too fast as to put anyone in harm’s way. “There’s the highway on ramp,” said, Etch. “If I can get onto the highway I can get away from these police officers and do it safely in the high speed lane of the open highway.” The police officers appear to know what the OUTLAW GTO driver is planning on doing so they try to get real close to the rear end of the classic muscle car in an attempt to try and send the message not to try and get away by exiting the back road and entering an empty four lane highway. Moments later, the OUTLAW Pontiac GTO heads towards the highway on ramp and starts to build up speed through the

gradual turn. Police vehicles are tightly close to the back of the jet black muscle car. “This guy is gonna make a run for it,” said, the police officer driving the lead vehicle. The OUTLAW GTO exits the on ramp and heads onto the open highway at a high rate of speed. The GTO rear tires chirp and spin as the muscle car leap frogs onto the four lane blacktop. Police can only watch as the rear taillights diminish in the dark ahead of them. “Damn! That’s a fast car,” said, the lead police officer. “We need something faster than these outdated patrol cars in order to catch that classic muscle. That car is built for power, handling and unlimited speed on the open highway. The driver is no slouch either.” The OUTLAW GTO

is tearing up the black top at a high rate of speed with nothing but open road ahead of it and the driver. Etch checks his rear view mirror and only sees darkness behind him. Not a headlight or overhead flashing lights anywhere. That doesn’t mean he is out of their reach. The police officers have radios and other police departments located in the towns and cities up and down this interstate highway. Etch is about to find that out.

LSX Superchargers

Kenne-Bell 2.8

C5 ZO6

DAVE McCLAIN

One of my customers recently asked me, what is the best supercharger for my car? He was looking to install a new kit on his ride. LSX motors love any type of forced induction. There are three main types of superchargers and each has their advantages and disadvantages. Some kits are not made for every LS motor due to size and vehicle fitment issues. The three main units are: Eaton TVS, Twin Screw, and Centrifugal. The Eaton TVS is a fifth Generation supercharger which contained various improvements over the old Roots supercharger. Roots superchargers generated a ton of heat and the new TVS Supercharger was designed to reduce heat buildup. The new supercharger has a 4 lobe rotor pack with a twisted 160 degree rotor which moves more air over the older 3 lobe design. Most aftermarket TVS Supercharging kits contain air to water intercoolers to help reduce intake air temperature. The TVS design has many benefits: low rpm boost production, minimal impact on fuel economy at part throttle, and an OEM engineered designed for longevity. The one thing I don’t like about some aftermarket versions is the drive belt on the rear of the blower. It’s very difficult to replace and most kits require you to remove Vortech Supercharger Trans Am the blower to gain access to the rear blower drive belt. Some kits do come with a front drive gear set 18| Motorhead Magazine - February 2017

2.3 TVS Camaro

that turns the rotors. A good example are the GM production units for the 2009 Corvette ZR1 and 2012 Camaro ZL1. I would use a TVS Supercharger on heavy vehicles like the 2010+ Camaro SS, Silverado / Sierra pick-up trucks, and full size SUVs. These superchargers are great at providing excellent low end torque. Something everyone will appreciate when trying to accelerate a heavy vehicle or towing. Twin Screw Superchargers are very similar in design to the TVS. The main difference is the lobe design. They have male and female lobes that actual compress the air between the lobes before the air is released into the manifold. The two main players are Kenne-Bell and Whipple. They don’t make kits for all GM LS engines due to hood clearance issues. These kits usually include an air to water intercooler to keep air inlet temperature low. They have similar benefits to the TVS design. Instant boost at low rpms

Bell 2.8

and seem to have a stronger horsepower potential over the TVS units. The Whipple 2.9 or Kenne-Bell 2.8 kits are capable of making around 900 flywheel HP depending on supporting engine mods at elevated boost levels. My Automatic 2010 Camaro SS is currently making 619 RWHP with a mild cam, long tube headers with high flow cats, and a reduced compression ratio to 10:1. Tuned on 93 Octane pump gas with conservative timing on 10 PSI of boost. I would recommend these blowers on similar heavy cars, trucks, and SUVs. My Whipple has been on my car for over 65,000 daily driven miles. I have been impressed with its quality. I have not had one issue with this blower.

Centrifugal Superchargers is the last category. Examples would be kits from Vortech Engineering, Paxton, and Procharger. These supercharger vary in size based on application. These belt driven superchargers have a totally different character when compared to TVS or Twin Screws. The compressor is similar to a turbo’s compressor, but obviously belt driven. They tend to build boost at a slower rate, but it is much more linear and seems more efficient at high 35B laRk industRial rpm. These superchargers work well on lighter cars with traction issues. Since the boost creeps in slowly and builds as the rpms rise, they tend to be easier on the tires. The smaller physical size of the supercharger has less parasitic loss compared to the TVS or Twin Screws which helps in power output. These units work well on Corvettes, 4th Gen F-Body’s, Pontiac G8’s, and GTO’s. The centrifugal advantages are low parasitic losses, reduced heat buildup, and linear boost deliver. Most kits are supplied Check out our inventory online at www.baldhill.com with air to air intercoolers which have a slight advantage over air to water designs.

Give us a call!

Before you make your final decision on purchasing a supercharging system consult local speed shops or contact people on internet forums and see others likes or dislikes of a particular system for your vehicle. The way you normally drive and how you use your vehicle is a big factor in your choice. If you like off idle throttle response or you tow then a TVS or Twin Screw style is for you. If you like progressive linear boost, you may be better suited with a centrifugal system. It’s best to be gather as much information as possible before you purchase because these systems range around $6000-$7500 dollars plus installation. Most systems come complete with EFI Programmers, which can help get you running quickly after installation. They are programmed for a 100% stock vehicle for use on 91 Octane

fuel. Additional power can be obtain from professional tuning for 93 Octane and additional mods like headers, etc. Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. STREET BEASTS: UNCH

CH

By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO It’s quite uncommon and almost uncanny that the same manufacturer would make such a strong force backed behind the valiant vision of introducing two street machines that would be straight competors against one another. While Mr. Robert Bourne of Rob’s Transmissions was able to obtain the powerfully exhilarang six hundred and fiy horsepower 2017 Camaro ZL1, his long me friend Edward Prosser was right along beside him in power distribuon and a thirst for a matchup. While the Chevrolet Camaro is built upon a newer and ghter sixth generaon plaorm, it holds nothing less than a perfect founding baseline that was introduced as a concept in 1966 and celebrates its fiieth anniversary with its appearance this year. With the added horsepower behind the 6.2 litre engine and Eaton supercharger, this plaorm had also displayed the concept of the Camaro going on a “diet”. A superb lightweight aluminum wheel package as well as aluminum suspension components which reduce unsprung mass for a much more improved drive that would make the handling one to none. Not only does this bad boy have a quicker response with a six speed short throw shi, but Mr. Bourne can also control and customize his launch mes with Performance Tracon Control, keeping his res at bay for an inmidang spin while adjusng his launch and RPM right through his centered digital screen. An interesng feature called “Line Lock” will actually give Rob the ability to lock up the front wheels while the rear wheels spin, which will greatly warm up the res for ulmate tracon. While the ZL1 has certainly made its roar, that doesn’t seem to shake down Mr. Prosser in his decision to persuade his competor that he would surely take a win when under fire. While the Corvee Z06 will hold 22| Motorhead Magazine - February 2017

the same LT4 6.2 engine and produce the same side winding horsepower, we must keep in mind of the slicker design it entails. While this beauty also has the Direcon Injecon, Acve Fuel Management and Connuously Variable Valve Timing, it also has the characterisc of changing the way the car pulls to the ground. Ed was quick to point out that his car had an adjusting wickerbill on his rear end that could potenally give him the power of contribung three hundred pounds of downforce to his vehicle. According to General Motors, this is the most aerodynamic downforce of any producon car that they have ever even tested. The stance itself has been widened by 80mm in the back and 56mm in the front from the Sngray itself which has been proven to make this car race ready with enhanced handling and beer

overall grip. Who will ulmately take the trophy when comparing the two? We can’t truly say when measured up piece by piece with such intricate designs but it would sure make an interesng comparison to see both of these unchartered beasts have a showdown this summer at a local raceway. With the Camaro’s new body style and sffer suspen-

sion it definitely has become quite the challenger to today’s modern Z06 and GM couldn’t have come up with a beer plan to keep an interest in the American market for raw horsepower. If you would like more informaon on either one of these cars, please feel free to contact Mr. Robert Bourne at Rob’s Transmissions at (401) 432-7535 or stop in at 11 Roseland Avenue in

Warwick, Rhode Island. He also has offering of full repairs at his business locaon inclusive to transmission repair. While Mr. Bourne has experience with owning and working with American vehicles, he also has etched a fine tuning with imports as well and strives to keep his customers happy. With his knowledge and drive we hope to see him roast some compeon in 2017!

Follow A Dream

Jay Blake’s Journey to Spread the Power of Positive Thinking ED YESSAIAN As each and every one of us wakes up and proceeds through our daily regimen, it’s almost impossible to imagine how many things we take for granted throughout the course of our day. Simple things like hearing, sight, sense of smell, sense of touch. These are things you don’t really even think about. Until they are taken away and you must adapt to your surroundings, which is what happened to Crew Chief Jay Blake, after an industrial accident cost him his sight, sense of smell, and sense of taste.

you perceive the situation that determines how you deal with it”, explained Jay. “By keeping a positive outlook on everything and appreciating the many blessings you still have, you just simply power through the tough times and sometimes even surprise yourself.”

According to Jay, “…some people might bemoan their lot in life if something that disastrous ever happened to them. I could not”. And he DID NOT. Jay took the hand he was dealt and soldiered on, adapting to his daily regimen with the many strengths that he still possessed after the accident. The greatest of those strengths was his positive attitude which helped guide him through the beginning stages of his new life and create a learning experience for him instead of a roadblock. “It’s how 34| Motorhead Magazine - February 2017

He admits that at first it came as a surprise to him how easily he recognized the feel of most of his tools and eventually mastered the techniques he previously used in his craft. “When you embrace a passion for something, that passion guides you to find a way to enjoy it again”. And by never giving up, Jay is still

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Parts retailer. One otherPark thing that most willRI store in case of is fuel. 1463 Ave ~ Motorheads Cranston, 02920 ~ emergencies (401) 943-7649 Yes, it may be necessary to keep a gallon or two for that snow blower over these

12 VOLT NEWS

When the weather outside is frightful, let us warm you up with a remote starter!

GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center

Frequently Asked Questions About Remote Starters Q: Will having a remote car starter installed void a vehicle’s warranty? A: Installation of aftermarket electronics will not void your vehicle’s warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 protects consumers from a manufacturer

their vehicle to us for the ENTIRE DAY. This is My way of ensuring quality and is part of the reason that we are known throughout the Town and the State for the professional work that I produce.

do not offer them for sale over the counter.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: A transponder key is a key that communicates with the vehicle. In most cases, the key sends out a low level signal to the vehicle as an added layer of security. These keys need to be programmed by a dealer to function properly. When installing a remote starter it is important to understand that the unit must duplicate EVERY function of the key and it’s interaction with the ignition switch. In addition to energizing the right wires at the right time, the remote starter must also fool the vehicle into believing that the transponder signal is present. We do this with the addition of a device called a transponder bypass.

A: The cost of a remote starter can vary drastically from vehicle to vehicle. I can provide you with a good faith estimate if you call the shop 401-946-0010 to get the details of the vehicle and the options available.

Q: What is a transponder key and how does it effect a remote starter installation?

Q: My car doesn’t have a key. I simply press a button to start my vehicle. Can you still install a remote car starter? A: Absolutely! While a “Push to Start” system is sometimes more complicated and requires additional parts and labor, it is something that I can handle professionally. Q: What else can be added to a remote car starter? A: You can add a whole host of security and convenience features to a remote car starter. Q: Can a remote starter be moved from my old car to my new one? voiding a warranty simply because aftermarket products are installed. Q: Can a remote car starter be installed on a vehicle with a manual transmission? A: A Custom Car Stereo Center offers very high quality remote car starters that will work on most manual transmission vehicles. I am a technician of 30 years, skilled and highly trained in the safe and secure installation of remote car starters on vehicles with a stick shift.

Q: Can I install it myself? A: Perhaps.... and perhaps not. I will never be able to assess the ability of our customers to do a quality job. What I can tell you is that a remote car starter in a modern vehicle is a complicated installation. I have all types of test equipment, online support and dealer phone support available to me. Much of this is not available to the public. It is important that you understand that one mistake on today’s vehicles can be thousands of dollars in repairs. It is for this reason that A Custom Car Stereo Center sells their remote car starters installed only. We

A: Yes, this can be done, but it does not always make financial sense. Direct any questions or future Article Topics to: Motorhead Magazine c/o A Custom Car Stereo Center 1174 Atwood Avenue Johnston, RI 02919 (401) 946-0010 ACustomCar@verizon.net

Q: I bought a remote car starter on eBay. Will A Custom Car Stereo install it? A: The short answer to the question is NO. The long answer is that this is not the right way to approach a remote car starter installation. As a rule, you ALWAYS want to have your remote starter installed at the same place that you purchase it. Q: How long will the installation take? A: At A Custom Car Stereo Center, we do things differently. We have since the day we opened and this is part of the reason that we have survived this long! One of the things that we do differently is to schedule “days” and not “times.” ALL of our appointments are for the day. Everyone is asked to have their vehicle at our shop before or around the time we open. I promise to make every attempt to have the installation completed on the scheduled day. I NEVER promise a specific time of completion. During busy periods, I am at the shop long into the evening finishing work. I do this to ensure quality. As the technician I know that I will be working until the job is done. If I am trying to meet a deadline of, say 4pm, I would feel pressured to rush to meet that deadline. Nobody wins in a situation like this... Not the installer, not the shop and not the customer. For this reason, I require every customer to commit CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
