MY FRIEND, WALTER
JIM WEICHERDING
ed talking with Joe about his models.
Joe met Walter about 6 years ago. He was at the Friday night cruise at St. Eugene’s Church. Joe was only ten at the time. He would set up a television tray along with a placemat. He would then put out his Franklin Mint cars on top of that television tray and occasionally add some 1:18 scale cars that he built. He had a model of a 1959 Chevy Impala at the time and that was the same car that Walter drove to car shows and cruise nights. Walter saw that model of his classic car and start-
Joe was young and shy at that age but week after week there was Walter driving into the cruise night with his Chevy. Walter was a Korean War veteran and Joe was just some kid that liked cars. They often talked at these venues and gradually built a bond with each other. Joe got to know other people at these car shows through his friendship with Walter and also learned some important communication skills. Joe was always a car enthusiast so it wasn’t like he was being dragged to these car shows anyway.
He attended car shows and cruise nights since he was 3 years old. The first one, was at the Field of Dreams cruise night on Thursday’s. Joe continued going to the cruise nights where he met Walter at St. Eugene’s on Friday’s. He then became a good friend with an occasional writer in this magazine, John Conti, who has also taught Joe a lot about the car show scene. Joe still keeps in touch with Walter. He goes over and mows his lawn, and helps with any other various tasks Walter has for him to do that day. Continued Next Page

Unfortunately, Walter lost his eye sight and sold almost all of his cars except his GMC truck that was restored by John Conti and his crew. When Joe and Walter met, Walter was in his 80’s and Joe was just ten years old. That span of birth years and generation gap didn’t stop them from liking the same hobby and becoming friends along the way. Walter and Joe talk over the phone frequently, and they discuss all of Walter’s past rides and his tune ups and a variety of automotive topics. Joe has learned a lot from Walter and he has taught him something along the way about his own truck. Joe is a big GM truck buff. He has taught himself a lot about those trucks over the past few years. So Joe told Walter a lot about these trucks because he didn’t know a lot about the truck he owned himself. But nothing will top what he taught Joe. Not just about cars. Life too. Joe has forged relationships with quite a few people attending the cruise nights and the car shows, but nobody is like Walter. Joe cannot thank Walter enough for all that he has taught him about cars and communication skills with people like us in the automotive world of cars and trucks.

WHY ARE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS BEING STOLEN? By GEOFFEY O
your vehicle, then you’re typically covered against catalytic converter theft.
A catalytic converter is a key component of a car’s emissions system, reducing the amount of harmful pollution going out the tailpipe.
Step 3: Visit a Mechanic
Catalytic converters first appeared on vehicles in the United States in 1975. They help transform hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides (all the bad stuff ) into water vapor and carbon dioxide, (the stuff we can live with).
Most cars will require an aftermarket Catalytic Converter to be welded to your vehicle exhaust pipes. The average cost of a catalytic converter replacement is between $500 and
In a catalytic converter, the catalyst (in the form of platinum, palladium and rhodium) is coated onto a ceramic honeycomb that is housed in a muffler-like package attached to the exhaust pipe. Where is the catalytic converter located? The catalytic converter is located on the underside of your car, in the exhaust system between the exhaust manifold and muffler. HOW ARE CATALYTIC CONVERTER BEING STOLEN? Thieves generally steal catalytic converters by sliding underneath a vehicle and sawing it with a powerful hand-held power saw that’s capable of cutting metal at a very high speed, the whole operation can take under a minute. Vehicle repair shops that used to see 2-3 of these thefts per month have reported an increase of this thefts to as many as 5-10 thefts per day within the last year or so. How to tell your catalytic converter has been stolen When a catalytic converter has been removed, your car or truck will make a loud roaring sound that will get louder as you push the gas pedal. Depending on your vehicle, you may have check engine light turn on. Most newer vehicles are equipped with an engine control unit, also known as an ECM, that monitors various sensors in your engine. You can have a look under your vehicle and if your catalytic converter is missing, you will likely be able to see that somebody has cut a chunk out of your exhaust system. What should I do when my converter is stolen? Step 1: Contact the local authorities/Police If you find your catalytic converter has been stolen, its highly recommended to contact your local authorities/Police immediately so they can start an investigation by checking cameras nearby and work to see if they can help catch the person or group responsible for the theft. Additionally, a police report may be essential for you to get re-imbursed by insurance coverage. Step 2: Contact Your Insurance Company Depending on your vehicle insurance, your car insurance may cover your catalytic converter replacement. If you have comprehensive coverage on 20| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

can be as high as $2500 including parts and labor. Prices will greatly vary depending on year, make and model of your vehicle. It usually takes from one to two hours for a typical catalytic converter replacement. While your new catalytic converter is being installed, you can ask your mechanic to add an anti-theft device to prevent future thefts. Can you drive without a catalytic converter? Most vehicles can be physically driven without a catalytic converter without any damage to your vehicle but it may be illegal to drive your vehicle without a catalytic converter in your state and your vehicle will most likely to fail and emissions test during inspection. How to prevent catalytic converter theft Park in well lit area. Its always a good idea to park your vehicle in well-lit areas when possible. If you have a personal garage, keep your car in the garage with the door closed when the vehicle is not in use. Vibration triggered device. set off these alarms. An after market alarm can also be installed on most vehicles at an affordable price. Etch your license plate number on your catalytic converter. This will make your catalytic converter identifiable to law enforcement. The idea is that a thief who sees the etching moves on to an easier target. Police in some communities have joined with local vehicle repair shops to sponsor etching events. You can contact your local mechanics and find out if they offer this service. Video surveillance around your garage or driveway. Having a Video surveillance around your garage or driveway is also useful if you have the budget for it. Most thieves would automatically leave when they see a camera. “Metal cage/Steel shield” A steel shield that fits over the catalytic converter, requiring time and extra tools to remove. Cages made of rebar or other high-strength steel that’s difficult to cut. Stainless steel cables welded from the catalytic converter to the car’s frame. Having the converter welded in place also makes it more difficult to remove.

BUCKING BRONCO Adding Some Pizzaz to a Returning Legend
By ED YESSAIAN By now it’s pretty safe to say that everyone knows the Ford Bronco is back! Having been one of the world’s all-time favorite off-road icons, Ford had to make it appeal to both the diehard old school fans, as well as the newer generation of enthusiasts. Back in the February 2021 issue of Motorhead my little girl, Zoe Valentina, brought you guys her first impressions of the Bronco Sport, which we borrowed from Stoneham Ford for a few days so we could get a few miles on it before generating our opinions. The Bronco Sport was actually a decent ride for to haul two kids around. It was comfortable, spacious, and handled reasonably well compared to other offerings in the small SUV market. But the Bronco Sport clearly doesn’t have the same personality or off-road prowess as the “other new Bronco” in the lineup, so today we bring you our first impressions of that highly anticipated platform as well as a few added modifications to make it your own. Once again, we hit up Stoneham Ford for our Bronco and drove away in a “Big Bend” model that was well equipped and very reasonably priced. There are other models with all kinds of other features and packages, but we knew we’d be changing this one up a bit so we didn’t start with a higher end package that had components we were replacing anyway. The factory ride is smooth and fairly quiet, even considerContinued Next Page 26| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

ing we had a soft top model. Those wanting an even quieter ride can opt for the hardtop model, but being from a family that has had dozens of Jeep Wranglers the soft-top model Bronco was not overly noisy. And of course, coming from a Jeep Wrangler family, I knew the factory ride height would be the first thing to go. When choosing suspension options, we really wanted to keep the ride as close to factory as we could, At the time of this writing there was tons on options from mild to wild but for starters we chose a simple 2” leveling kit from Zone OffRoad products that was recommended to us by our friends at Indy Auto Parts in Peabody, MA. Chip Mitchell at Indy Auto also spent countless hours with us searching wheel catalogs before we found “love at first sight” with a set of 18x9” Fuel Rebel 6 wheels. Wrapped around those wheels we wanted a set of tires that was obviously 35” but not as aggressive or loud as the Mud Terrain style 35” tires offered on some of the other model Broncos. Chip suggested the Baja Boss A/T which is a new hybrid design by Mickey Thompson that is the best of both worlds. The tire offers an aggressive tread but with a much quieter ride and excellent wet weather traction. We loaded them up and headed to Southern NH Undercar in Hampstead, NH to start our project. Dan Christopher at Southern NH Undercar wasted no time tearing into our Bronco and had the leveling kit done in a couple hours. After mounting and balancing the new tires, he checked the alignment and was ready for it to roll. But of course,
because Southern NH Undercar specializes in Custom Exhaust, he couldn’t let us leave “quietly”. According to Dan there was already a really nice kit from Magnaflow that would give our Bronco a little deeper tone as well as add dual tips in the rear that made it look pretty cool, if you ask me. One call to Indy Auto Parts and we had the Magnaflow set up. Our Bronco had a nice new sound to it without being over the top loud. It looked good, it sounded good, but something was just missing. No doubt that our Bronco would already stand out from the crowd, but we really wanted people to know that it was ours, so we decided to spruce up the exterior a bit. Stoneham Ford’s Collision Center took care of the final round of customization and they knocked it out of the park. First the factory grey grille was removed and color matched to the car. The BRONCO nameplate was blacked out in the process. Ford Raptor style running boards made entry and exit a bit easier without significantly
reducing ground clearance. Made by GO-Rhino, the boards tucked up nice, almost like a rock rail type of product. After a quick walk around, we decided that we needed a wider flare to shield the vehicle from any debris that would be tossed from the new Mickey Thompson’s. Stoneham Ford’s Parts Department offered us two options: we could choose either a wider version of the factory flare, or we could choose the more aggressive “Pocket Style” flares. We went with the “Pocket Style” on this build and they really changed the personality of the truck as a whole. With everything else accomplished we dropped the Bronco off at Markarian Sign Co. in Wakefield, MA and asked him to come up with a subtle graphics scheme that would just break up the Cactus Grey color a bit. Knowing I’m a huge Mustang guy, Chris Markarian laid down a Boss mustang style graphic that really capped off what we were looking to do to this Bronco. The finished product looked amazing, handled great, and turned heads everywhere we went. I’ve driven quite a few cars in the past 12 years with Motorhead but this one was really a fun project to be involved in. so fun, in fact, that we were asked to build three more through Stoneham Ford and Southern NH Undercar once the customer’s new vehicles arrive. Stay tuned as in the future we may be getting a bit crazier with these things!!

CABIN FEVER JIM WEICHERDING
I know many of us enjoy the Boston World of Wheels Auto Show in March every year. It’s like the primer application before the paint is applied to a classic car or truck. It starts the car show season here in this region every year.
It’s February. Ugh! We are stuck smack dab in the middle of that horrible place between last year’s end of season car shows and cruise nights and this year’s start of the car shows and cruise nights season. As many of you reading this article are well aware of, it’s not fun for automotive enthusiasts anywhere across New England or the northern half of the United States for that matter, right now. I also noticed, while recently doing some online research regarding larger automotive events, that there is no schedule date for the annual Boston World of Wheels Auto Show on their website. They list all of the other automotive shows across the USA, even the postponed and cancelled dates. Boston World Of Wheels isn’t showing up as cancelled, postponed or rescheduled anywhere. It’s like it’s vanished into car show heaven forever.
In recent years, these huge three day weekend long automotive events were cancelled due to Covid but I never thought it would just disappear entirely. Looks like many of us will have to endure a much longer case of Cabin Fever this winter. I know a variety of car shows and cruise nights begin in the month of April but all of the rest start in the month of May every year. Hopefully, milder temperatures and nicer weather will win out this spring and we see an influx of car shows and cruise nights get an earlier start to the 2022 Cruisin’ Season. Most of all, let’s all hope it stays dry this spring and early summer. Last year, it rained so often, we could’ve hosted boat shows instead of car shows at our regular host locations. Not this year. No boats, just cars and trucks! See you soon!

BUILT NOT BOUGHT
By MARK LABRANCHE
This is the first in a series of articles that will be looking at “Cars That Are Built Not Bought”. Simply said, people who built their cars themselves with friends and family. Nothing wrong with buying an already built car turnkey. I have much respect for any Motorhead! If you out there having fun, riding in a car - that is just cool to me. For myself, I can’t stop looking with amazement with this caliber of cars that are built in people’s garages or lean-to. In the up-and-coming articles you will see jaw dropping cars built by owners, with their own hands, sweat and tears. Some will have close friends or family helping them, guiding them or maybe even painting it for them. The bottom line is they took the time to build their car, their time, and long hours to get it done. This article features a car built by Dakota Lannan down by Easton, MA. Dakota has always been a Fox body guy. He holds on to the cars he buys. The one special one he had to sell was to buy a wedding ring for his future wife. Dakota is so into the 5.0 Fox body’s he has a 5.0 tattoo. Married to his wife Katie with a daughter Kallie and son Galvin. All his family love to go to New England Dragway. His family is very supportive, his mother Jane still supports his need for fast cars. When you talk to him, this is just not a passing hobby. You know that this is a lifestyle, this is his way of life. DRAG LIFE! He will be the first to tell you that too. This car is driven on the street and is registered and insured! This, in my book, is just BITCHEN!
kids full time. So, time was limited. After the kids went to sleep is when it all started. He had some concerns but said “if someone else can build a competitive car, why can’t I.” Dakota’s main concern was attention to detail. This is when the car got torn apart, I mean, totally apart. Everything came out. Glass, carpet, interior, and the drivetrain. Then the sawzall came out and the tubular front end was fitted and welded in place. In comes Dakota’s close friend, Todd Rochefort. If you know Todd, you know this man has built several drag cars. Hopefully you will see
The car started out a stock Fox body hatch, stock 302 with a five speed. Dakota started to slowly build it with bolt-on parts. When Covid hit, he was not working but still had to take care of the 30| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

Todd’s car in one of my articles very soon. Todd helped with the full roll cage and some other stuff. The back half of the car was mini tubed to fit the 13-inch tires. So, this meant the stock 8.8 Ford rear-end had to be cut up. The sawzall once again came out and the rear end was cut and sectioned. He borrowed fixtures from another friend, Matt Fleck. Again, another future article, I hope. Dakota shortened it up, welded it up and sent the axle out to be cut and welded to fit his measurements. The car then got all new wiring, every single wire was made and wired to perfection. Safety being high on the list called for an on-board fire system. This was installed by Dakota and place inside the engine compartment. The parachute was installed and all the brackets he fabricated. Now came the tuning for the car. Holley Fuel Tech was the system of choice for Dakota. Having never tuned one before but was going to learn it one way or another. He got the car started and Continued Next Page
The body - well the same story here folks. He did most of it himself. Did the front-end tubing and sanded the car down and prepped it with a gray primer. Had no experience of body work but he
now came the fun part. He put in a basic tune but this needed to be dialed in for his motor combination. So, he drove the car with his laptop on the passenger seat and started to tune the car. Dakota then took the car out on the highway and started to tune the car again for higher speeds and acceleration. He then brought the car to New England Dragway and started to make runs and tuning each pass to the current configuration. He could have brought the car to a dyno shop and had it done but that was not going to happen. He is a blue collar worker with a family and every penny counts. Don’t get me wrong, nothing but the best parts went into this car. No used parts or flea market parts, all new. The heartbeat of this beast is a 388 LS with a moderate size 102 Turbo. Air to water intercooler, all controlled by Holley Fuel injection. Fully built
was determined to do this car himself. The only thing he could not do was paint the car. He did
not have a place to paint it. So, he called a friend and he drove the car over there and prepped the car. Taped and masked off the car and pushed it into the spray booth. When it was done, he wet-sanded the car with 2000 paper to make it shine. Dakota is very proud of what he has done and why not? Hell, I would be on cloud 9 right now knowing I made this beautiful Fox body hatch with my own two hands and a little help from my friends and family. Don’t bother asking if it is for sale because the answer will be NO! If you walked up to him (and I hope you do after this article) and had $50k he will look right at you and say, “Ya no, I wished I could, but I can’t. Thank you for the offer. This one is staying in the family for years to come. My family, my kids will have this car forever.” This car changed Dakota as a person and a man. “The memories, experience, and the family time, make it all worth it.” It was my honor to be able to write this first article for this young man. Dakota is a talented, humble and good man. His heart and soul went into this family heirloom, and it will never ever leave his family.

TH400 and factory 8.8 rear end. Horsepower you might ask? Well let’s just say between 1000 HP to maybe 2000 HP. You will never get a straight answer from one of these guys so don’t bother. But Dakota is one of the guys who is not afraid to tell you anything. I can tell you this car runs in the 4 second range in the 1/8 mile and in the 7 seconds in the 1/4. By Orlondo J. Valles I was 16 years old in 10th grade at East Providence High School. I remember taking an auto mechanics class in our vocational building that year, considering becoming an auto mechanic after I graduated. In those days, before the gas crisis, there were plenty of muscle cars around and I always had an interest in owning one. A few of my friends had muscle cars at the time. Bobby, who owned a green ‘67 GTO, Roger, who had a black ‘66 Impala, four on the floor with a 327, and my cousin, Dennis, who owned a red ‘64 Pontiac LeMans, with three deuces under the hood. Dennis later sold his LeMans for a 1966 GTO. Richard, another cousin of mine, who we called Dickie, who was much older than me and returned home from the war in Vietnam in 1966 had a ‘66 GTO he purchased overseas. Although I had my license then, I was unable to purchase my first car until I was seventeen. A muscle car was on the top of my list, yet I had no idea of make or model that I would choose. When I was ready to look for a car, Dickie was ready to sell his GTO because it had been stolen and recovered several times. I asked to buy it from him but he didn’t think it was a good first car for me. So one day as I was walking home from school, I happened to see a car in the driveway of a home with a FOR SALE sign on it. It was a 1967 Plum Crazy Purple Chevelle, 396 SS, black interior and I just had to have that car! Continued on Page 34

So with the little money I had saved from a part-time after school job and help from my dad, I took out a loan and bought my first vehicle...a ‘67 Plum Crazy Purple Chevelle SS. While I owned the vehicle, there was only one thing I wanted to change and that was the standard 3-speed tranny to a 4-speed. Donald Smith, a good friend of mine, owned a ‘66 Chevelle with a 283. He lived just three streets away from me in East Providence, RI and was a great auto mechanic who happened to have a 4-speed transmission laying around his shop. He and I swapped out the tranny in his home garage. Back in those days, us car guys had our secret spots where we would go to street race when word got out that a race was to happen. All the cars I mentioned earlier, as well as another ‘66 Impala 396 and a Buick Grand Sport 400 raced - but Plum Crazy beat them all! At that age, I had no idea what I had. How could we have known these cars would be in such demand today? And at these prices?!?!?! After having fun with the Chevelle for a few years, I got rid of it to purchase another vehicle, to which I regret to this day. I bought a 1974 Black Monte Carlo 350 with an automatic on the floor. The Monte Carlo was a great car but couldn’t touch Plum Crazy. The question is how and why I got rid of Plum Crazy?? Sadly, due to a cold winter and not enough antifreeze in the cooling system, the block froze and cracked. It sat in my mother’s yard for a period of time and she wanted it out. As I mentioned, being a young guy 34| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

who had no clue what I had, I needed the car out and so I called the tow company. They came and towed it away. What a mistake! As years went by, I was certain that if I ever were to buy another classic car, it would be nothing but another ‘67 Chevelle. Finally, after many years, and now at 67 years old, I again am the owner of a yellow 1967 Chevelle which is one of my most loved possessions. My wife Rana loves the car just as well and enjoys cruising in it whenever we can. You might be wondering how I came about this car. One day my wife
and I decided to do some muscle car searching online, just curiously looking. We came across pictures of this ‘67 Chevelle which was actually up for auction through eBay by a place called Online Auctions, USA located in Waterville, Ohio. We decided to contact them and inquired about the bidding process. They emailed us instructions and also suggested we come down to view the car in person. They sent us a link to a site with a video of the car and rated it a 9/10. Although I did not make a trip out to see the car, with all of the info I saw online about the vehicle, I blindly put in a bid. When I showed some of my car friends, they all responded with, “Don’t get your hopes up. That car is gonna shoot up on the last minute and you’ll never get it for the bid you put in!” Not expecting anything out of it, my wife and I still proceeded to follow the bidding process. There was four days left for bidding. Everyday after dinner, I would review the website to see what it was at and if there were any other bidders. Sure enough, there were several others outbidding me and I began to feel assured I did not stand a chance at winning the car. So I stopped watching. On the 4th day, Rana asked me to look and see what the car went for and who the lucky winner was. I pulled it up on my computer and the auction had another 2 hours and 4 minutes left. We ate dinner and went back online and there were several bidders ahead of my offer with just two minutes left! My wife then said to me, “If you really want that car, then outbid the highest bid but keep your finger on the button for a couple of dollars more just in case you have to hit it at the last second.” Rana pushing down on my finger at the last second resulted in the following...flashing across the computer screen in red capital letters was YOU WON! Ten minutes pass and my cell phone rings, “Mr. Valles, you stole that car!!!” After I paid for the car, I had it transported home by a closed trailer transporting company. Three times in a matter of months, I was thrown offers that far exceeded what I paid for the car. With the suggestions of many mechan-

ic friends, there was no way I was going to sell this Chevelle, so I refused all offers. The only necessary thing I felt I needed now was an excellent mechanic to help me keep my Chevelle up to par. After asking and searching around for several years of owning this classic, which was very seldom uncovered and taken out of my garage for a short ride, I was highly recommended to John Conti and his sons of Conti’s Auto Service & Motorsports. They were referred to me as the best around. After having the opportunity to meet and talk with John, I knew he was the mechanic I needed to deal with. And the fun of perfecting this car has only just begun! James Conti was the main ingredient to get this car to its present condition and driveability, with lots of sweat.

How to Get Paid For Scrapping a Car By ILIAS
STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND TAKE OUT SELLABLE PARTS
Thanks to the high cost of scrap metal, your old, rusty, banged up car can make you decent cash if you know what to do with it. On average, you can make anywhere between $400 - $1200 on a non-running junk car if you follow the right steps to scrap your old car. The question remains how to do it. The following paragraphs will tell you exactly how.
A common mistake a lot of people make is to move from step 1 straight to the scrap yard. The problem with that is, taking your junk car to the scrap yard without first identifying and removing some valuable parts will reduce the money you will get on the car.
Most will tell you to find the nearest local scrapyard to get cash on your junk car but there are some things you need to do that will save you time and money. STEP 1: DRAINS THE FLUIDS The scrapyard will not take your car if it has fluids in it. So the first thing you want to do is drain the oil, the transmission fluid, the differential fluid, the freon, any gasoline in the tank - virtually everything needs to be evacuated. You will not be able to drain the freon because the process requires special equipment. Your local AC guy will have an evacuation machine to help you out in that regard.
The scrapyard will give you a lump sum price that is usually determined by the car’s weight and sometimes its condition (availability of resellable parts like the airbag for example). Making you lose out on getting extra money on some of the things on the car you can remove and sell yourself. There are few things on a car that are worth money. For example, if your car has alloy or aluminum wheels you will want to take them off and sell on craigslist or Facebook marketplace. They are worth a lot of money on their own. You can get up to $250 for all four wheels. Other parts you would like to sell for extra cash are the center caps, hub caps, and emblems. They are easy to ship and are usually in high demand. You will be able to sell them for $30+. Tail lights, headlights, and side mirrors are common impact-damaged car parts and they are also usually in high demand. It takes a few minutes to disassemble and you can sell them north of $60 online.

STEP 3: GET APPROPRIATE PAPERWORK To be able to sell your car to a scrap yard, you must have at least two documents - your ID and the vehicle’s registration papers. Most scrap yards will not demand the car’s title because they can just easily check for the VIN number on the car. As far the paperwork for the process goes, any reputable scrap yard will help you out with that (this should be a criteria in choosing a scrap yard you want to sell to). STEP 4: PICK A SCRAP YARD Speaking about choosing a scrap yard, there are some things you should look out for. First is the obvious - their prices. Some will try to lowball you on the cost of the vehicle so it is important you find out the price of vehicle parts so you can have a rough estimate in your head. This will guide you to get a fair price on your vehicle. Another thing you should look out for is their special service. Reputable scrap yards provide convenience and will most often offer to come pick your car for free. Also look out for their customer service. Questions like “how long does it take to complete a transaction” and “how will I get paid” should be satisfactorily answered. Typically, the answer to the former question should be nothing more than 24 hours. ilias is the marketing manager at scrapcarsremoval.com.au The company is specialised in offering cash for cars [ https://www.scrapcarsremoval. com.au/cash-for-cars-sydney/ ] service across Sydney, Australia. 5 DEFUNCT CAR BRANDS YO By ALLEN “PRIMO” HARRIS (@executiveautomotivesociety) The automotive business is a tough business. Troubles of big brands like Ford, GM, and Chrysler are legendary. Many of us wonder what would’ve happened if the Delorean, made famous in Back to the Future, was still in production. Even more have tried to deduce a world where the cutting edge ideas that Tucker would’ve brought to the table had his very, very short automotive career made famous by the movie of the same name, not been cut short. We’re sure that no one will ever forget the epic battles of Pontiac when we hear reference to movies like Smokey and the Bandit even though the brand has since disappeared. Yet they didn’t make the grade and are now history. These are also famous products that have been immortalized in film and history, but how many have been forgotten to time? How many famous brands have disappeared into obscurity, forgotten, and we are either too young or just not informed enough to know? Here we’re going to talk about some and surmise what they would’ve brought to the table if they were still around today. AUBURN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY and CORD Founded in 1909 through acquiring and merger of two other car companies the Auburn Automobile Company would be known for designing luxury cars. When the brand failed to meet expectations the new owners came to a man by the name of E.L. Cord to run the company and he created the Cord Company as a holding company creating the Cord automobile in the process. The Cord was a legendary vehicle. It was notable as being front wheel drive and having hidden headlamps. It was also underpowered and pricey, but its styling defied the negatives and it sold along with the Auburn designs that were produced in partnership with another vehicle on our list, the Duesenburg. Even though Auburn and Cord defied the odds, Cord’s stock manipulation and the depression finally caught up and mounting reliability problem spelled demise and in 1937 the company folded.
7’s with sloping aerodynamic lines and cutting edge looks. Even the rotary engine fit right in with the kind of thinking Cord was known for. Even if they weren’t reliable you could guarantee that they would be fun. DESOTO This brand was part of the Chrysler brand created in 1928. It was made to compete against the larger luxury vehicles by being a low cost option, similar to mid-size cars of today and its initial sales broke records. First failure for DeSoto came from a redesigned look that, although it worked for larger vehicles, failed miserably for the smaller DeSoto and it would continue to be plagued by marketing and design problems while finding moments of renewed success for the rest of its tenure until it finally couldn’t keep up with the mistakes and in 1958 when the economy took a hit the DeSoto took the hit with it. Losing over half its sales in a single year Chrysler decided to cut its losses and did away with the brand. If DeSoto was around today it would be sort of small luxury vehicle. It would be priced to sell but have good amenities, I dare compare it to the Genesis of today. During it’s time it fit right in with Dodge so there’s no doubt they would share similar platforms if not be a straight luxury offshoot of the current Dodge line-up. Chances are had it made it this far it wouldn’t have survived the bail outs and down-sizing Chrysler went through. DUESENBERG MOTOR COMPANY Duesenberg began its life in 1913 producing engines and race cars in Minnesota. They would build on that race car heritage while developing luxury vehicles. Many assign the word “doozy” to the manufacturer and
It would be tough to see where the Cord would be today. Television loved the vehicle and it made an appearance in James Bond books and as Batman’s car in the comics. This just accentuates the brashness of the design. Some would surmise the design would be similar to the Mazda RX
although there are those that argue the etymology, there is no denying it earned the title. A coach built vehicle was known for being gaudy, big, crazy expensive, and insanely powerful. In a time (1930s) when most cars couldn’t reach 100 mph Doozys were obtaining a zero to 60 in 8 seconds and on past 100. It’s hard to really capture the true magnificence of the vehicle, but to put it in perspective many Duesenbergs sell today for over a million and even have examples that eclipse the $10 million mark. Duesenberg’s leadership was never business savvy and although they finally found footing as they moved toward the ’30s they were doomed from the start. It would also be their lavishness that would be their demise when the depression destroyed the demand for luxury vehicles. Duesenberg was 40| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

YOU MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN unable to recover and in 1937 they closed up shop. It’s easy to think the Duesenberg is the most capable of fitting into the market over the last 30 years and it makes one wonder why they didn’t join the revival of the RollsRoyce, Bentley, Maybach and brands like it. If Duesenberg was around today they would be a domestic version between Maybach and Bugatti. It’s doubtful they would’ve embraced the compact cars of the ’60s, instead unapologetically continuing to make big luxury cars with a goal to take over bedroom poster space from Lamborghini. There is little doubt that they wouldn’t have tried to capture fastest production vehicle accolades. If successful they would’ve held the title with a death grip powered by scary fast luxury cars that continued to maximize speed with reckless abandon. The car would evolve to a slopped jet shape, like it was about to take on the salt flats, to continue to maintain speed, eventually resembling a street version of the SR-71 Blackbird creating similar ground breaking material while doing it. It would’ve found stride in the ‘90s when its styling would’ve fit right in with Mercedes and BMW, but would’ve lead the way for Rolls and Bentley in making traditional cars with excellent future styling and decadent opulence. The only car that has a good comparison to what we could’ve expected is the Maybach Exelero except the Doozy would’ve been more expensive and more horsepower. Absorb that for a moment. STUDEBAKER and PACKARD Studebaker started making wagons for farmers and the military back in 1852. They entered the automobile business in 1902 producing electric vehicles and in 1904 added gas powered vehicles. They would go on to produce quality reliable cars for 50 years out of their headquarters in South Bend Indiana. Unfortunately by the 1950s the World War and an automotive war against GM and Ford, among other things, had taken its toll on the brand. In an attempt to recoup its losses it purchased Packard, another luxury brand, in 1954. The move was too little too late and as new and ever burdening problems mounted they eventually toppled the behemoth. Many of its dealers went on to sell Mercedes-Benz products. What would we see today if Studebaker was still in production? If they could lock in a unique and improved look they would be known for reliability and luxury and they could redefined, if not totally rocked what would be expected of high end luxury cars. It’s no question they would find their niche in a cheaper option with all the luxury accoutrements and still have great initial quality and longevity, a true driver’s car. There’s a question if they would’ve returned to their electric roots well before Tesla was even conceived, by either offering a full electric or hybrid vehicle while tapping into their cash friendly buyer. They would’ve been a much more trusted brand when focused on long term
quality and trended much quicker. We don’t have to imagine too much as Packard tried to revive the brand in 1999 with the the Packard Twelve. Equipped with a 573 horsepower V12 8 liter mated to a 4 speed all-wheel drive system. The prototype sold for a measly $150,000, but it left no question of what we could expect from the brand had it lived on. LOLA CARS Lola may not jump to mind as a street vehicle, but if you’re associated with racing Lola is legendary. Lola started in 1958 from a merger between a
rowing company and a carbon fiber company. So you have a better ideas of what their street cars would be, one of their famous cars was the Ford GT40. Lola actually made many cars for other manufacturers which is why you may not even know they existed. It would go on to be one of the oldest and largest race car designers in the world. Lola is most noted for its Formula and LeMans cars, but you would be hard pressed to know all their vehicles because they often wear the badges of the companies they were built for such as Nissan, Ford and Mazda. Even though their vehicles never made it to city streets the Lola made quite the impression on the track with cars such as the T70. Unfortunately Lola was unsuccessful in returning to F1 and without financial support mixed with other factors they declared bankruptcy in 2012 ending a long run of successful track time. If Lola was still around they would still be producing amazing race cars for cutting edge competition while flying well under the radar for most enthusiasts. Unfortunately we’ve lost a lot of other brands that have fallen under hard times or simply could not net the support they needed to continue into the current day. Chances are we’ll lose more down the road, but I hope we remember some of these legendary brands and take a moment to imagine what the world would be like if they were still around.

DOUG COBY RACING PARTNERS WITH CHAMPION CREW CHIEF JOHN MCKENNA, ANNOUNCES 2022 SCHEDULE By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby Racing announced today the addition of champion crew chief John McKenna to the team for the 2022 season, while also announcing a seven-race Modified schedule. The team is tentatively set to run four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events and three Open Modified races – filling out a schedule where the ultimate goal will be to capture the trophy. The team also announced the return of Mayhew Tools as the primary sponsor of the No. 10 Modified. The addition of McKenna will provide the chance for Coby and McKenna to rekindle a successful relationship they shared for many years. When Phil Moran left Doug Coby Racing to pursue other opportunities at the end of the 2021 season, Coby and McKenna teamed up for the Haunted Hundred Tri Track race at Seekonk Speedway to close the year. From there, the two spoke and came up with a plan for 2022. When Coby and McKenna first worked together at the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-finale, Coby didn’t even know who McKenna was. One year later, they won at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park together, as Coby split the season between McKenna and another crew chief. In 2012, the two took off – winning five races and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship with car owner Wayne Darling. A year later, they won two events and finished inside 42| Motorhead Magazine - February 2022

the top-10 in all but three races, coming up just short of a second straight championship. “I didn’t know John, I actually thought another one of the other crew members was John McKenna,” Coby joked. “I walked into the shop and was introduced to him and we started working together. When Phil decided to head in a different direction, my top priority was finding someone out there who I knew I wanted to work with. I want to go to the race track with John. His overall approach to racing is something I love. He’s crafty and is always trying different things. He has a lot of full-fendered experience on top of his Modified experience and the both of us together just try to do whatever makes the most sense in each situation. It’s a great experience working with him because you know he’s always thinking about absolutely everything on the car and at the track. He has a great eye.” The decision to scale back for 2022 is one that both Coby and McKenna are comfortable with due to obligations outside of racing. However, Coby is open to additional opportunities to drive other events during the year if they do become available to him. The announced modified schedule is just the confirmed events Coby’s modified team will race in during the 2022 season. “I have a few things to get organized with the team and that is what Continued Next Page
led me to the decision to not force the puzzle pieces together to make the full year. My priority for 2022 is to get back acquainted with John and do what is manageable for all of us, including my crew members, to continue building a winning team. Whether we run the Tour full-time again in the future or not, we have to see how things evolve over time,” Coby continued. “I’m really thankful to have a strong commitment from John Lawless and Eric Mills at Mayhew Tools, and Kim Berube at Reynold’s Auto Wrecking. They make it possible for the No. 10 team to race and we hope to bring home some more wins for them this season.”
Win Race
The 2022 schedule for Doug Coby Racing will begin in April at Stafford Motor Speedway for the 50th running of the NAPA Spring Sizzler on April 23-24, where the race winner of the 100-lap special will leave with a minimum of $15,000. From there, the team will compete in the $15,000 to win Open Modified race at Claremont Motorsports Park on Friday, May 27.
ABOUT MAYHEW TOOLS:
One month later, on Wednesday, June 29, Coby will join the Tri Track Open Modified Series teams at Seekonk Speedway for the annual $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday, of which Coby is a threetime winner. He will follow that up with his first of four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races during the year, competing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 16. From there, the team will run both NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Thursday, August 17 and Saturday, October 8 as part of the World Series of Speedway Racing. MID-WEST 1970 COUGAR By ROB MAY and JOHN NEWSOME
Motorhead loves Blue Mercury cars! We continue this theme with a Blue interior and Blue exterior 1970 Mercury Cougar XR-7 that makes its den in Kearney, MO. John Newsome, a plant engineering mechanic for UPS, and his wife Jennifer, a RN, have six boys: Brayden 14, Briar 10, Brooks 8, Brock 5, Hank 4, and Beau 3. They own three awesome cars. Besides the ‘70 Cougar, a ‘69 Mach 1 Mustang and Jennifer’s 2019 Mustang performance pack level 2 GT are at the Newsome’s home. John always has been a car guy since he was young. “Obsessed with anything with an engine, I remember always bugging my dad and uncles to take me for rides or asking to let me drive something well before I was old enough or able to.” Here is the story of his Cougar.

in Ottawa KS (one of the biggest in the Midwest). I’ve always wanted a Cougar. My uncle has a 1968 Cougar that he has owned since 1996. As a young kid, I was always obsessed with that car. He would pull out of the garage, do a burnout, and put it back. It was the coolest thing ever. Fast forward back to 2019, at the car show with Jennifer, I decided I finally had the means to buy a Cougar. So, I searched online and fairly quickly found my ‘70 Mercury in Canada. We arranged to buy the Cat, and we drove the car across the border. I finally had one of my dream cars.” Modifications include the addition of a hood scoop, side stripes, and 17in American Racing Hopster wheels. There are multiple interior upgrades. A full buff and polish with ceramic coat was completed at Midwest Coating Solutions in Kearney MO. Some unique features to this car are the painted bumpers. On most of these old cars, everything is chrome. Not on this car as the black bumpers and trim give it a very aggressive look. The Cat is equipped with a 351W mated to a FMX auto transmission to a 3.00 geared 9in rear end. The engine is also upgraded with a few mods such as Big Comp Cam Mutha Thumper cam, aluminum intake, and ARP hardware throughout. The Mercury gets driven mostly on weekends around town and to local shows. “It gets tons of attention everywhere it goes. Someone is always stopping to talk about it.” Another unique feature about this particular Cougar is its 351 Windsor engine. Most ‘70 Cougars are equipped with 351 Cleveland V8s. This car
was a very early ‘70 build. Ford used leftover Windsor engines from 1969 then changed to Clevelands, but both engines were coded the same. So a Windsor motor in a 1970 Cougar or Mustang is very rare. John shows the Cat every chance he gets. It has placed in its class the last two years in a row at World of Wheels in Kansas City. It’s been to Starbirds in Tulsa, OK and Abe Lincoln show in Springfield, IL as well as many many local shows. The Cougar shows extremely well and gets many compliments. CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

It’s wise to keep your eyes on your classic car’s suspension system

automobile owners.
Shock absorbers, springs, and other components of a vehicle’s suspension system, particularly those used in cars made in the 1950s and 1960s, were designed to last.
The initial step is to look for parts made by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
If a car has been on the road for sixty or even seventy years, its suspension system has almost certainly been overhauled at least once.
Car makers used to make these parts model specific, even taking into account the year a certain model was manufactured, all those years ago.
That doesn’t mean the owner/restorer shouldn’t maintain a close check on the suspension system of their beloved car, including how it sits on the road and behaves.
Those who value guaranteed safety and authenticity will virtually always choose OEM parts in order to restore their vehicle to its original condition.
Risks should never be taken, and maintenance, including entire overhauls, should never be postponed. When a car is driven on public roadways, it puts the driver, their passengers, and the general public in danger.
OEM parts are becoming increasingly difficult to come by these days, and the rarer the model, the more difficult it is.
When evaluating a historic car for purchase, it’s important to pay close attention to the suspension to make sure it’s in good operating order. Complacency must not be allowed to creep in after the restoration has been finished.
As a result, OEM parts have grown prohibitively pricey for those who aren’t particularly concerned about authenticity. Aftermarket parts are another option for historic automobile owners. Unlike OEM components, aftermarket parts are manufactured by third-party companies.
That means the suspension system should be inspected on a regular basis and any indicators of damage, including potential harm, should be remedied.
Aftermarket parts are typically less expensive than OEM parts, and they allow drivers to modify their suspension system to something more modern without compromising the vehicle’s aesthetics.
That’s why it’s critical to have at least a rudimentary understanding of a vehicle’s suspension, including what parts can be replaced and what options are available.
The ease with which the vehicle’s suspension can be reconditioned and repaired will vary from model to model with the necessary parts in place.
A suspension repair can be approached in two ways by antique

the three forms of suspension available for vehicles. A coil spring is positioned between two wishbones, and either a transverse spring or a double transverse spring is used to replace the lower wishbone or the upper wishbone in parallelogram suspension systems. In many cases, the lower wishbone is larger than the upper, causing the wheel to tilt as it rises, preventing tires from rubbing against the vehicle’s inner wing. Although swivel pins are fairly popular in parallelogram type suspension systems these days, an older vehicle can be equipped with a kingpin and stub axle setup, often known as a hang-over beam axle.
Everything was fine—as long as the system was kept in perfect working order, resulting in a pleasant ride. Any lubrication leaks would have a severe impact on the vehicle’s suspension and ride quality almost immediately. The multi-link suspension system is the third type of suspension system that may be found in UK and European cars from the 1950s and 1960s. A multi-link suspension system features one or more longitudinal arms, with a flexible mounting replacing the traditional top link and a telescopic arm acting as a kind of kingpin. Mercedes-Benz introduced it in the 1960s, and it can now be found on

many automobiles made in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Wheels and bearings are located at the end of an arm that carries the steering swivel pin in this arrangement, with the entire assembly pivoting in a format known as the Dubonnet system at the time for reasons that have never been explained.
While only the driver and passengers will truly benefit from a wellmaintained suspension system, with little apparent evidence for casual spectators to appreciate how much effort and money has gone into making ideal suspension, it will still be a sensible investment in terms of comfort and safety.
Anyone who owns a car with a Dubonnet system swinging arm suspension system will quickly learn how much maintenance is required to keep the system in good working order. As a result, when most owners and/or restorers changed their suspension systems, they did away with Dubonnet. The centerpoint of a Dubonnet featured encased coil springs and shock absorbers sealed in oil to ensure that the suspension parts were constantly lubricated, consisting of an extremely rigid axle beam with sprung steering and suspension arms that pivoted around kingpins mounted on the end of the axle.

RAMEAU FAMILY MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES 2022 SCHEDULE
By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA
WESTMINSTER, Mass. – Rameau Family Motorsports announced today a full slate of scheduled events for the team for the 2022 season. The schedule will begin in April and run through the end of October with the team set to visit at least nine different tracks across multiple states in the New England region to compete in Modified action. The season will include a full-time schedule with the Tri Track Open Modified Series, which will run seven races in 2022. It will also include the debut of a new car for Rameau Family Motorsports as part of the new Whitcomb 5 Series – a five-race series for Crate Modifieds in New Hampshire – with races set across four different tracks – that will bring the team back to the grassroots, weekly environment. The team will also compete in a few Open Modified races during the season, while driver Sam Rameau will compete in select NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events for a team to be announced. “I’m excited to have a busy schedule for the 2022 season,” Sam Rameau said. “I think running the Crate Modified races part of the Whitcomb 5 Series will be fun for the entire team - especially those events at tracks where we have previous success. We look forward to racing for the championship both there and with the Tri Track Series.” The Tri Track season begins on Saturday, April 30, at Monadnock – as part of a two-day doubleheader for the team. Rameau will look to make it three victories in the last four Tri Track events at the high-banked oval on Saturday, then will switch to the Crate Modified entry for race one of the Whitcomb 5 Series on Sunday, May 1. From there, Rameau will compete in the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to Lee USA Speedway on May 21, followed by the $15,000 minimum to win Open Modified event at Claremont Motorsports Park on May 27. Rameau and the team will compete next on Sunday, May 29 with the Tri Track Open Modified Series at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Vermont. From there, June includes another Whitcomb 5 Series event at Claremont Motorsports Park and a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at Monadnock, along with the annual Tri Track $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday at Seekonk Speedway on June 29. The month of July will include another Whitcomb 5 Series event at Lee USA Speedway on July 15, followed by the 11th annual Tri Track SBM event at Star Speedway on July 23. On Friday, July 29, Rameau will run the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour return to Claremont Motorsports Park. August includes just two events – the Tri Track special at New London-Waterford Speedbowl on August 14 and the Whitcomb 5 Series event at Hudson Speedway on Sunday, August 14. On Sept. 16-17, Rameau and the rest of the Crate Modified drivers will race for the championship of the Whitcomb 5 Series, back at Monadnock. On Sept. 24, the Tri Track Open Modified Series will return to Stafford Speedway, while the team plans to compete in the Thompson 300 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on October 9 as part of the Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing. The season will conclude at Seekonk Speedway with the annual running of the Haunted Hundred with Tri Track.
“With some of the higher purses and competition levels in the events we have picked for the 2022 season, it’s not going to be easy to run up front,” Rameau continued. “But our team works really hard in the shop to make sure the cars are prepared and I couldn’t be more thankful for their efforts.” Sam Rameau will continue his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology during the new year, where he recently accomplished making the Dean’s List once again. Rameau Family Motorsports will continue to provide updates prior to the 2022 season through SammyRameau.com and the Rameau Family Motorsports Facebook. 7 Signs Your Car Tire By DAVID SHABA Imagine being stranded in the middle of nowhere because of a flat tire. Just thinking about it is stressful, so you must pay attention to the health of your tires to avoid being in this situation. In addition, a good tire significantly improves your car’s braking performance; hence it’s recommended to check your tires’ pressure frequently or at least once a month.

Here’s a list of signs you should look at when checking your tire’s pressure and call a tire repair service immediately, in case you find any. FALLING AIR PRESSURE It’s an alarming sign if your tire is losing air pressure. It may be due to a small leak coming in contact with a sharp object on the road. You can get it patched or replaced. LOW TIRE TREAD The tread on the tire is the rubber surface that should be as firm as a rock. But with time, the tread on your tire can deteriorate, which means you’ll need fresh rubber. An easy way to check the state of your tire’s tread is through a penny test. UNEVEN TREAD WEAR Often the tread on a tire wears off at different rates. Some parts look fine, while others may look worn out, which is essentially uneven tire wear. Uneven tire wear is usually an outcome of misaligned wheels, improperly inflated tires, and faulty suspension parts. ODD NOISE OR VIBRATIONS You should be concerned if strange noises and vibrations are coming from your tire even on smooth roads. The cause may be incorrect wheel alignment or an improperly inflated tire, so it’s best to take your car to a mechanic before these odd vibrations snowball into a larger problem. BUBBLES ON THE SIDE If you see bubbles forming on the sides and threads of your tire, it’s time to get a new one.

ire Is About To Burst defects or air seeping into its internal layers. And once that happens, there’s no option other than tire replacement. CRACKED RUBBER Cracked rubber of your tire calls for a new tire since it’s an indicator of rubber having worn out to the point that it’s beyond repair. OLD TIRES If you’ve used a tire for a long time, it’s going to wear out one day. Vehicle
manufacturers say that a tire lasts a maximum of 6 years, while tire manufacturers recommended changing tires after every ten years. David Shaba is the owner of All Cities Expedite Towing. What’s On Your Shelf? What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter

The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. MUSCLE & CLASSIC CAR MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series Written by Jim Weicherding / Etch reflects upon that day in July when everything turned upside down for classic car and truck enthusiasts across the USA. He continues driving OUTLAW down these countryside roads and streets trying to avoid law enforcement and protect his Pontiac GTO from being crushed and buried with everyone else’s classic cars and trucks in the local boneyard. He thinks to himself; July is a month to remember our
independence from being caught under the thumbs of those oppressive entities that possess and control everyone else’s lives. It’s our month of Independence. When we are no longer being ruled by somebody else, or the government. Banning classic cars and trucks from America’s roadways is just insane. This country was built off of the backs of automotive factory workers. Their blood, sweat and tears made this country great! It’s not so great anymore. Every single one
