owner of two Model A’s. Questions:

JACK WOODMANSEE

Me: is this your car?

Bride: Are you crazy? How are you going to get them to RI?

The saga continues!!!!! The Bride and I are in Michigan attending to some of her medical needs and living with our friends Ron & Cynthia. On the weekends guys will be guys and we drag the girls out to a car show or cruise. Michigan being the car capital of the world, a Saturday show will have 500-600 cars. So this particular Saturday we’re off to the town of Clinton (no relation to Bill & Hillary). Ron and I are there early with his 1934 Ford, 2dr sedan. After finding our parking space and setting up the chairs and cooler we start to walk around and take in the show. On the far side of the grounds I see it. The car I have to go home with: a 1930 Ford Model A, 2dr sedan. It has a 350 motor/350 tranny, Ford 8” rear end, a 4” dropped front axle and was chopped 3”. I’m all over this car like a tick on a dog. After crawling all around this car for 5 minutes an older gentleman walks up to us.

Old Guy: No, but I have one like it at home.

Me: Not a problem honey, only a minor detail.

Me: You have a hot rod Model A? Old Guy: No I have an original one. Me: Is it for sale? Old Guy: Yes! After an exchange of information with the old guy and the hot rod owner, Ron and I move on to enjoy the rest of the show. Later that week we go to the old guys home and make a deal on the original 1930 Ford and I tell him I’ll be back to Michigan in October to pick it up. The next order of business; off to check out the hot rod. After a short ride in it we make the deal and now I’m the proud

POPPING A WHEELIE: LET’S GET PHYSICAL LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC PONTIAC-VERNANCIO VERNANCIO As a Dynojet owner and GM Tuner, I have an Every race car nut dreams about or has done the ultimate task of “popping a wheelie”. A “wheelie” or “wheelstand” is when the front wheel/wheels come off of the ground due to sufficient torque being applied to the rear wheels. It’s in the back of most enthusiasts’ minds, but not many quite understand the physics behind it. It’s actually a pure demonstration of science, and exceptional forces of gravity and torque. Wheelies can be dropped into four defined categories: 1.) Clutch Wheelies – When the clutch is disengaged and the throttle is opened to let the en-

gine i race and d then h the h clutch l h quickly i kl engaged. 2.) Power or Roll-On – This is performed by just opening up the throttle, or with the aid of suspension dynamics or rider motion (bike-wise). 3.) Bounce or Slap – Opening and closing the throttle in time with the suspension rebounding. 4.) Manuals Wheelies – Moving the rider’s body backwards (relating to bikes and pulling back on the handlebars near the end of travel). Now that we have these types factored out and explained, let’s get down to the forces behind this special maneuver.

is sufficient enough to reduce the load carried by the front axle to zero causing weight transfer. The exact formula to determine this would physically look something like this:

A wheelie will occur when the acceleration

would be the change in the load constructed by the front wheels, would be the acceleration, would be the center of the mass height, would concur of the wheelbase, and would be the total vehicle mass. Another formula base, which does not require considering the load accounted for by the front wheels or the total mass of the vehicle, is for the absolute minimum acceleration required for a wheelie:

is displayed as the acceleration due to gravity, would be the horizontal distance from the rear axle to the center of the mass, and is calculated as the vertical distance from the ground to the center of mass. This means that the minimum acceleration concluded is directly propor-tional to how far forward the center of mass is located and inversely proportional to how high it is located. With this in mind, the mechanical power can be defined as force times velocity, in one dimen-sion, and force is equivalent to mass times acceleration, then the minimum power required for a wheelie can be expressed as the product of mass, velocity, and the minimum acceleration re-quired for a wheelie:

This can confirm that the minimum power taken into consideration is direct and proportional to the mass of the vehicle and its velocity. The slower a vehicle is moving, the less power is needed to perform a wheelie, and that is without even considering the power required to overcome the famed “air drag”, which increases with the cube of velocity. Therefore, the least amount of power required is when the vehicle begins accelerating from rest. Keeping this lesson in mind, we hope to see more of you Motorheads pulling wheelies at the track. It’s a simple formula of physics and mathematics that will help your ride “fly” and give you quite the ultimate experience. Remember, may the power of dynamics be with you!

ROCKIN ROBIN AND THE RAT BASTARD CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5

Two days later we pick up the hot rod with the whole Famdamly. Ron, Cynthia, 3 year old Tasha, one sheep dog, Linda and I. On our way back to the house we stop at a Mexican restaurant for a great meal and collaborate. Now the fun begins!!! I go to start the hot rod and smoke starts billowing out from under the hood and under the car. I thought my new pride and joy was going to turn to ashes right there in the restaurant parking lot. As luck would have it the one wire alternator shorted out and cooked the wire. A nice family just coming out of the restaurant notices the dilemma; sizes up the situation and said, “Follow us to our house, I can fix this”. An hour later we say our thanks and good byes and we are off to Ron’s. But wait fellow readers there is more: I leave the rod at Ron’s house and head for Rhode Island. In mid-October I’m back to Michigan, with my buddy Jim, who has a trailer and we pick up the original model A. Then off to auto zone to replace the alternator for the hot rod. With a couple of days to kill, we take the rod and head out to a show. Ron is in his 1934 Ford. Jim and I in the Model A. What a great day, a lot of thumbs up and good food. As we are leaving the show, the horn on the Model A sticks. No thumbs up but a lot of stares. I find the harness and rip out the horn wire. Finally back to Ron’s house without any more problems and head for Rhode Island in the morning.

Heading South on M23 toward Toledo, OH with the hot rod leading the way, Jim and I are in communication with walkie talkies. We get into Toledo and I missed a turn and send us into the city. Oh boy, this is going to be fun. A nice lady at a toll both gets us heading to I-80 toward Cleveland. Through Cleveland and onto I-90 toward New York. Jim wanted to stop at “John, the seat man’s house” to pick up a pair of seats for the 1929 Model A sport coupe he was building. As we are traveling along I-90, and it’s time for a brake, we stop at the first rest stop we come upon. As we are standing there stretching, a guy with a pickup and a large enclosed trailer pulls up and stops right in back of us. This guy steps out and says that he had to stop and look at the hot rod. As it turns out he is John, the seat man with a load of seats he had just picked up from GM in Detroit. As luck would have it, he had Jim’s seat with him. This is great, one less stop. As we are pulling Jims seats out of the trailer I spot a set of leather seats that I want for the hot rod. With the deal done we load everything into the hot rod, Jim’s pickup and some other stuff into the Model A on the trailer. I wish I had a camera, seats all over the parking lot, Jim and I loading up our seats and John reloading his trailer. The looks we got from people entering the rest stop were priceless. On the road again with a stop in New York for the night and into Rhode Island the next day. Now the real fun begins. Hot rodding is not a hobby it’s an adventure.

ROBERT KNIGHT’S 1969 COUGAR XR7 JIM WEICHERDING Robert Knight’s 1969 Cougar XR7 features an owner installed 1965 427 R code engine with medium riser heads, installed roller cam and roller lifters. Bolted on Harland Sharp billet roller rockers with steel Lemans rods keep the compression rockin’ and a rollin’. NOS hyperutectic pistons are an added install that helps get the job done internally. This rare classic Cougar also features a set of Doug’s Headers for that beefy dual exhaust street

rumble you can hear coming down the road at quite a distance away. The rear end is a Ford 9” that allows the tires to fit nicely under the vehicle with a mini-tubbed set up. This quick Cougar also features a fabricated 8 point cage installed by the owner. This car is owner built and driven everywhere across New England each and every Cruisin’ Season from Cape Cod to Rhode Island and into Connecticut often. I see this cool classic car everywhere I go and my work with Motorhead Magazine takes me to a lot of Car / Truck Shows and Cruise Nights all season long. Robert told me that he has owned this classic muscle car for ten years and it is only street driven, never raced at the drag strip at any time. I can fully understand why he wouldn’t want to drag race this gorgeous car. If you happen to see this 1969 Cougar XR7 in your travels and see Bob standing near his ride stop over and say, ‘Hi’. He could talk cars and trucks all day long without missing a beat. This guy loves the Cruisin’ Scene almost as much as I do and I do it for a living. See you in a couple months at the start of the New England Crusin’ Season.

PANORAMIC PLASTI DIP: AN INTRODUCTION LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC PONTIAC-VERNANCIO VERNANCIO

Plasti Dip is that it is a complete fallacy that your vehicle has to have that “flat” look. There are many glossers and pearls available in Plasti Dip which leaves most with many options. You could have that chameleon paint job you have always wanted or you could deck your car into a high gloss funky color of your choice. The possibilities are endless and easy to change as much as you want

Yes, it is all the new rage and is top in its trend scores and most can’t seem to get enough of it. Plasti Dip has become quite the “go to” for automotive enthusiasts, but with all the hype we at Motorhead Magazine wanted to know the why, how, and the possible benefits that Plasti Dip has created from those that have delved into it. First off, what is Plasti Dip? Plasti Dip is a flexible, rubber coating that was originally used to coat hand tools for protection during heavy duty use. Vehicle owners are now painting their cars to protect them from the elements while giving their ride a rad new look. If it is properly applied it can easily last about three years without having to be retouched. It is extremely resistant to the elements of sun, snow, ice, etc. and most consumers will actually dip their wheels in order to protect them against the salt and snow in the winter time. As far as durability, Plasti Dip paints will withstand up to 200 degrees of heat without any compromise, although it is a solvent based paint

and will not hold up against gasoline. There is a “Dip Guard Gasoline Protector” available from DipYourCar.com that will fit almost any fuel tank as it is universal and will leave little room for error if you are afraid of destroying your paint. Plasti Dip can also be peeled off at any point when you are ready, and if you want a strong bonded coat you should apply between four to five sprays in between to produce the best and longest lasting effects. The best part about

as you are not limited as per say such as purchasing a one-time “grind and prime” coat of paint. We believe the how and why of Plasti Dip is essentially the feeling of versatility, protection, and short term commitment. If your car is dipped, please don’t hesitate to show us your design and explain how you got your ride to where your desired look would be achieved, we are all ears!

IROC ON T

DAVE McCLAIN A few weeks ago, MotorHead Magazine’s Owner, Louis Cicerone pulled in front of my shop with his mint condition 1987 IROC Z28 and wanted to do a little dyno testing. Lou’s car has less than 3000 miles on it. It’s still sporting the stock 16 inch low profile Good Year Gatorback tires! Yes, original 245/50/ R16 ZR Gatorback tires, somehow without a hint of dry rot on them. This car really brings you back to when cars were real cars without fancy options like traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, Bluetooth, and navigation. This was from an era of owning a car for the pure pleasure of driving. V8 torque ruled the streets and driver skill won the local races. Lou’s IROC was equipped with the 350 L98 Tune Port Injection, automatic transmission, and 3.27 rear end gears. Rated flywheel horsepower for the L98 TPI was 225HP @ 4400 rpm and 330ftlbs @ 2800 rpm. The IROC was a perfect cruising car back then and it’s low end torque always but a smile on your face. Lou’s IROC is a dream to drive, the automatic transmission shifts with a nice strong confident shift, unlike most of today’s cars. These cars had character unlike most of today’s boring cookie cutter rides. Chassis Dyno’s have been around for a while, but locally back in 1987, I couldn’t remember one shop that had one. This tuning tool was reserved for hardcore race teams. Since Louie’s car is virtually a 100% stock IROC with the only modification being a set of K&N drop in air filters, we thought it would be cool to see how it performed on the Dyno. As a reminder, my Dynojet Chassis Dyno determines horsepower and torque val-

ues at the rear wheel. The motor on an engine dyno will read higher than a chassis dyno due to the fact it isn’t spinning the motor accessories, transmission, driveshaft, rear end gears, axles, wheels, and tires. All of these items take energy to spin and shows a reduced power figure at the rear wheels. As typical MotorHeads, we were curious of what a stock low mileage IROC would put down to the rear wheels. So Louie and I strapped down his car and made a few pulls. Our first pull the IROC laid down a solid 206HP and 297TQ and a near perfect Air/Fuel ratio of 12.6 to 1. Next Louie decided to

THE ROLLER see if some of the old school HP tricks actually worked. worked First he disconnected the air box and we did a pull. We actually lost a few HP down to 201. Next, Louie decided to clean the MAF sensor and reconnect up the air box. That’s when the he hit a peak of 211HP. Not too bad at the rear wheels for a car that was only rated at 225 flywheel HP. I might see the IROC back during the spring time, Louie was contemplating a computer chip, throttle body air foil, and maybe relocating the IAT temperature sensor. These were common upgrades for the L98 TPI motors. Maybe, Louie’s IROC can reveal what power

tricks actual worked back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It will be interesting to find out‌ Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. TIREMikeNATION Nelson’s Grudge Racing Series ED YESSAIAN

brings 4 events for 2016

It’s always exciting when someone makes an effort to bring some new ideas to the local drag racing scene. When Mike Nelson announced he was proposing a small tire series to two local drag strips, the idea definitely caught my interest. Add in a proposed payout of 3000.00 (based on a 16 car field) per event, and the car counts should be through the roof, featuring some of the area’s fastest small tire rocketships. The two participating tracks are Oxford Plains Dragway and New England Dragway, both known to be very racer friendly and open to anything that will bring in decent car counts and an exciting show for spectators. As of now, there are four scheduled events for 2016… 1. Saturday June 18th at Oxford Plains Dragway 2. Sunday July 3rd at New England Dragway 3. Saturday August 13th at Oxford Plains Dragway 4. Saturday September 17th at New England Dragway Rules for the event are short and sweet and fairly easy to interpret. It starts with a 200.00 buy in, based on a 16 car field. The winner will receive a 3000.00 cash payout. New England Dragway will feature an instant green but Oxford Plains Dragway will run Pro-Tree. This will give the racers some variety and a bit of challenge, which should really keep everyone on top of their games. Both tracks will be run what you brung to the 1/8th mile with the following vehicle guidelines… 1. No “W” tires 2. All vehicles must have working headlights and taillights 3. Any rear suspension combination is allowed 4. Must have “Stock style” front suspension 5. Vehicle MUST be driven to the staging lanes and back to the pits 6. Any power adder allowed 7. Nitrous Fogger Max 36 Jet or combined kits total of 400 8. Turbo maximum of 88mm 9. Maximum blower- Procharger F1 or YS. No crank drive, no gilmer belt (3in cog) 10. No Methanol as main fuel. Meth injection Ok 11. No wheelie bars except 4 cylinder entries

Vehicle minimum weights 1. Naturally Aspirated- 2600lbs 2. Nitrous- 2800lbs 3. Forced Induction- 3000lbs 4. 4-cylinder entries- 2500lbs Judging from the early interest on social media, this series could shape up to have some ridiculously fast street cars. Do you think you have what it takes to walk away with a 3000.00 pay day? Join us at any one of the four events and see if you have what it takes. You could just walk away a whole lot richer!! Thinking of Building a Rat Rod? JACK WOODMANSEE If you are wondering if a rat rod is for you, then let’s discuss the subject. If you have a small budget then a rat rod may be for you. If you have some extra parts hanging around then a rat rod may be for you. If you want to be creative in your first or next project then a rat rod may be for you. Well you get the picture. Usually you want to start with a frame, either you can buy one or build one from scratch. I have started with the front half of a Model A frame that I bought on Craig’s List for $75.00.,and then someone gave me the back half of two new 32 Ford rails, I was on my way. Building a frame can save you money and it can be built to your specs. I have also picked up a partially done project, this is usually better, unless you have to go back and redo previous work. With the unfinished project you get to put in the details that you want for a finished car. Body styles are almost endless. For my first one I took a 27 Ford two door sedan and chopped the top 6 inches then vertically sectioned 22 inches out of the rear side windows and made a 5 window pick-up truck. A detailed exposé may be found at; http://ristreetrodding.org/ uploads/Jack_s_27__Rat_Rod.pdf. Also it is found at the bottom of this page http://ristreetrodding. org/zjack.html Another time I found a fiberglass roadster on Craig’s List and used that for a body. I saw a 65 Chevy truck body where someone had chopped the top around 5 inches, wow, but it was in Florida and I couldn’t fit it into my luggage. After the body and frame you should chose the running gear. I like a SBC, Th350, and a Camaro/ Nova rear end 60’s or 70’s vintage. The reasons are that they are readily available, reliable, and cheap. You hear “…everyone runs a SBC”. There are the previously cited reasons for that and don’t worry about that because with a well-built rat rod people will be looking at all of the details. We will discuss details in a couple of moments. Front ends, well for me a straight axle is the only way to go. I have used Speedway a couple of times and that has set me back about $1300.00, but for safety reasons I accept that it is a must to do thing. You can buy a gasser straight axle with Ford spindles and brakes from Speedway and it will be delivered for $900. I have used a 55 Chevy truck axle with ECI disc brake components out of CT and they are super nice people, plus they are readily available to talk to if you have a problem. Before we leave steering, one note that I have to add is that a 6 degree positive caster is a good place to start. If you are not sure of “caster”

then research it on Wikipedia. I like to go with a heavier steering box. I have used a Jeep box and an early Bronco manual box, but that may be a little difficult to find. New Corvair boxes may bought new or found used on eBay. Now we may go to other items. Radiators can seem like a problem but Speedway sells a low budget small radiator that I have used a couple of times. The circa 1965 Mustang can be bought for around $130.00 at your local AutoZone and Rock Auto lists them at $108.89 and $128.79. If you need a custom radiator, you may want to try http:// saldanaracingproducts. com/ I had one done and with shipping it came in at a little under $500.00. Fans, I like mechanical as there is less prone for things to go wrong. If you have the radiator in the rear then probably you have to go electric. Sometimes you run into problems like suppose the alternator doesn’t fit in the engine bay. Then consider having a pulley welded to your drive shaft and mounting the alternator in front of the differential. With rat rods don’t rule out anything till it doesn’t work. Also another crucial note is that you want a 3 downward angle on the transmission tailshaft end and an upward 3 degree angle on the rear end yoke. Also make the intake manifold level. Caster angle and driveshaft angle are two factors that can give you a smoother ride or lot of problems. Of course camber, toe-in, wheel balancing, unbalanced driveshaft (Cockcroft Co., a Motorhead advertiser, located in EP can help you.) air pressure, correct shocks, and etc. are critical too. I have wired a couple of my cars from scratch, but it is easier to buy a kit and follow their directions. Steering wheels, taillights, gauges, mirrors, and the list goes on can be bought, begged, bartered or whatever to keep the costs down. Power seats taken from a Caravan and wrapped with Mexican blankets are good, and give you great seating options too. Don’t omit any option; you can start a build with an air cleaner. I added some photos to give the reader ideas. One is a bed pan, another is a head

light bucket, the third is one is still a project and the fourth is an air cleaner top. The bedpan was the simplest to build, just drill a hole and paint some decorative touches. In case you can’t read this, the car was sponsored by Cal’s Reliable Auto Parts, CRAP for short. Under that was their motto “We deliver daily” The second one I mounted a tin chicken water dispenser top bought from Tractor Supply to the front of a headlight bucket. Then painted this green added a piece of lace to the top and after it masking off I added a layer of black paint. The unfinished one started with a fiberglass kit and dried floral foam bricks from Walmart. What you would do is to glue the foam together and then shape it into a scoop form. Next apply several layers of fiberglass mat, let dry and remove the foam. Now all that needs to be done is drill a hole in the top, a little bodywork and paint, done! The last one is an air cleaner top and I painted some figures just to give it a little flair. This leads us to the air cleaner hold down; use an 8-ball, a large die, 3/8 inch open ended wrench, or simple wing nut (No No, too plain). Anyway the obvious thing is that there are endless possibilities here. Find something, use strong two part epoxy and adhere a ¼ 20 nut onto it and it is done. Take this as your attitude with you

when design an overflow container, door handles or whatever and you certainly will end up with a unique vehicle that will attract a lot of attention. I used parts from 13 different vehicle makes on a five window truck rat rod. One final “off the wall” idea that could be used is to take a windshield washer fluid reservoir and mount it in the trunk in front of the rear tires. Connect a hose from the bottom of the container to a valve. Connect the valve handle to a mechanical arm that could be controlled from inside the car. Then split two hoses from the distil end of the valve and mount them in fashion that the fluid pours out in front of the two rear tires. What is the fluid, you ask? Bleach. If you read this far, well you know that Ernest Hemingway probably didn’t write this and Einstein did not come up with the ideas. But you now know that you are a candidate for a rat rod.

CRUISIN’ CAPE CARS JIM WEICHERDING

I don’t often get the chance to attend the great car shows and cruise nights on Cape Cod, but when I do get the chance I try to make an effort to attend them. Last summer was a great time to cruise Cape Cod. This coming summer will not be any different. The three times that come to mind are the car shows at the Patriots Plaza, John F. Kennedy Museum and the A&W Cruise Night. All three locations are easily accessible from the Route 6A and Route 28 main roadways that dissect The Cape Communities. I could give you exact addresses and locations but I feel it will rob you of the experience to go out and cruise Cape Cod communities and take in all that there is to take in with the great shoreline and historic landmarks that are pretty much on your left and your right as you make you way from Bourne to Provincetown. I found each one of these car shows by pure accident and it was well worth the trip to find each one of them. Start out early and make a day trip out of it. Enjoy all of the classics roaming on the black top and on display at car shows and cruise nights. If you fall in behind more than three, or four classic cars and trucks chances are very good that they are headed to an area car show on Cape Cod. There are many more than the three that I have just mentioned so take a chance and find that special location that fits your own desires and passions. There are many classic car and truck makes and models that are being showcased and put on display each and every week across Cape Cod during the New England cruisin’ season weather permitting. New England tends to get a lot of rain in the spring with cooler temps and this weather just gets these car show enthusiasts

a little more excited about the milder weather and temps so they drive their favorite classics to their area cruise events.

The Cape offers so many opportunities to have fun with the family while you cruise and take in all of the sights on your trip to the car shows and cruise nights. There are plenty of ice cream parlors, diners, restaurants, gift shops, go-cart lands, theme parks and water activities throughout the summer season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. These are the peak three months for tourists and travelers that visit the Cape Cod area for fun and excitement. During that behind the wheel of a classic car, or truck is even better and I know because I do it myself every chance that I get to do so. I see plenty of classic cars and trucks at landmark historic lighthouses and the beaches during the spring, summer and fall across Cape Cod. A lot of these beautiful rides are more than likely members of the Cape Cod Classic Cars Club and they frequent these venues on a week-to-week basis. The photos featured with this article shows some of those great classic rides at car show events such as the Patriots Plaza and John F. Kennedy Museum this cruisin’ season. You should seriously consider getting your family and friends into their own classics, “Buckle Up!” and head to Cape Cod even if it is just a few times this car show and cruise night season and enjoy everything this region has to offer in sights and sounds behind the wheel of your own classic car, or truck. Well worth the time, gas and any expenses to take this day trip to see all of the Cape Cars on Cape Cod. Enjoy and cruise safely everybody!

ANSEL GROSE’S LITTLE GIRL GETS CHAUFFEURE ED YESSAIAN When I joined the Mustangs of Massachusetts club at the end of 2014 one of the biggest draws to the group is that it is truly a “family friendly” environment. With a handful of weekly meetings, track days, and major events, the MoM club has something for pretty much anyone that owns a Mustang or fast Ford car or truck. With close to 300 members now, it’s simply amazing how close all of the members remain, with a handful of major characters pretty much standing in as the faces of the club. One of those “celebrity” club members happens to be Ansel Grose, who is also the first person I met when he came to my shop after just purchasing his Shelby GT500. We’ve obviously been good friends ever since. At this time, Ansel’s GT500 is one of the heavy hitters in the club and quite possibly the fastest car amongst the members. But of course, he never seems to brag about it, because this car is simply just a means of transporting his little girl, aka the Duchess, for her occasional ice cream run. Eventually the truth came out that Ansel is only the driver until the Duchess takes over in a couple years and shows him what this car can do. The Duchess’ Shelby started out bone-stock. But that just wasn’t fast enough for when her sweet tooth craved some snacks. Eventually, the factory blower got dumped for a Kenne Bell 2.8 liquid cooled supercharger, along with KB’s 168mm 24| Motorhead Magazine - January 2016

monoblade throttle body and Gimme 5 coldair kit. Injector Dynamics ID 1000 injectors quenched the Shelby’s thirst with Revan Racing supplying their billet fuel rails. Exhaust duties start with American Racing 1 7/8 long tube headers then continue through a 3 inch X-pipe making their exit out of a pair of Borla’s Touring mufflers. This system results in an absolutely ferocious roar that lets the ice cream shop know that the Duchess is on her way as Ansel rips through the gears through the stock transmission that has been upgraded with a McLeod RXT clutch, lightened steel flywheel, and GT500KR shifter. From the back of the transmission a DSS Carbon Fiber driveshaft turns a Ford 8.8 rear end that holds the stock Trac-Loc differential and 3.55 gears. With over 750rwhp being spun through the drivetrain, Ansel and the Duchess needed to make sure the car would handle in more than just a straight line. In the rear, Steeda supplied the upper and lower control arms and J&M added their adjustable panhard bar. Koni adjustable dampers are hiding at each corner, as are Hawk brake pads to insure the car comes to a screeching stop when needed. As of the last Dyno Day at Performance Dyno in Loudon, NH, Ansel attempted to hint that the car is pretty much all set as it sits, but with a couple other club members creeping

URED IN STYLE!

up as top dogs in the power game, there may be a couple new surprises being kept under wraps over the winter. He wouldn’t specify exactly what

he was thinking about, but I’m sure he will have the car ready for the upcoming Boston World of Wheels Show in the Spring. As we sat around chatting a bit more Ansel did comically throw a bit of a warning at me saying, “It won’t be long before the Duchess is in the driver’s seat coming for you and your race car”. And in all seriousness that’s a pretty cool prediction, because that brings the next generation into the Mustangs of Massacusetts!!!

Diesel Truck Days: Winter Solutions 101 LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO Temperatures are dropping and the Winter time is finally showing its splendor after the long awaited holidays and missing that “White Christmas” that most of us were pining for. We as Motorheads are putting our vehicles away or merely starting on projects that were kept off due to the warm atmosphere. Like most gearheads, we might also have something hiding in our garage that has been long untouched most of the season. We like performance and high torque, and the finest machine that would carry both of these qualities would be the diesel truck. With the past brutal New England round of storms consisting of last year alone, it is important to keep in mind that we need to keep these Powerstroke, Cummins, or Duramax engines in tip-top shape. First and foremost is to have your batteries checked. A cold battery will typically lose up to twenty percent of its cranking power in subzero temperatures, and one weak battery out of at least the two might lead to a “no start” or very low power condition. It is pertinent to have a higher cold cranking level than your vehicle usually

specifies as this can give you peace of mind in the worst winter weather conditions. Secondly, the key rule is to remember that when the temperatures drop, engine oils have a tendency of turning over into a thicker viscosity. While most diesel oils are thick to begin with, a lot of trucks will easily take 15w40 into their systems. A thick oil will lead into what diesel owners will call “gelling” or “waxing” and it will eventually lead to a point where the oil itself cannot be pumped properly into the engine and it will ultimately cause the vehicle to die out and not start. It might help to use an additive that you can pick up at your local automotive parts store, or you could even buy an auxiliary heater for your engine. One last important factor to fluid change is to remember those trucks that require the water-based solution of DEF fluid. Def fluid will actually freeze over at 12 degrees and will require some room for expansion as expansion will occur by a upwards of a seven percent rate as temperatures lessen. All in all, make sure that your DEF tank is not completely full. Once the engine runs, the fluids will thaw as the Selective Catalytic System is equipped with heating elements to ensure proper filtering of the exhaust system. With this basic knowledge in mind, we can easily understand the theory behind diesel maintenance during even the harshest conditions. Whether you are daily driving, or will be plowing in the worst of storms, you can count on keeping the durability of your diesel truck to a maximum with these short and descriptive tips.

KNOCK OUT N

By Mike Dodd Before I was old enough to drive, growing up in Riverside, I watched my older brothers buy their first cars. All had a common denominator, power. My brother Bob’s first car was a Thunderbird, but the one that caught my interest was his second a 1967 GTO. It was gold with a black vinyl hardtop. Four speed with a 400 engine. My brother Tom started with a 6 cylinder Mustang,

but again the one that made the big impression was his 1969 Road Runner with a 383 and four speed transmission. After a couple of years I guess the novelty wore off a little for him and he let me take the RR to my senior prom. All of the above started my fondness for muscle cars. When I turned 16 I spotted a 2 door 55 Chevy Bel Air sitting aside of Nat Chievetone’s garage in Seekonk. It had no drive train. Long story short it belonged to one of Nat’s mechanics. I bought it for $25. I towed it home with my dad’s Buick Electra 225. Shortly after that I picked up a 365 HP Chevy small block that came out of a recently wrecked Corvette. I rebuilt it in my garage with the help of friends and my next door neighbor who was a mechanic at Gray Chevrolet in Swansea. After much hell trying to start it another neighbor Gerry ‘Skid’ Sorterup figured out I dropped the distributor in one tooth off. Skid was really well known for building engines in the circle race track world. This was my daily driver for two years going to High School including lugging me and my buddies to football practice and in the summer to work and Horse neck beach. We all wish we kept our first car and 99% of us did not. College warranted my almost giving it away. Since entering the business world I have been fortunate to have a new car every 2 years as part of my compensation. So many I can’t recall all of them. Yes Cadillacs, Lincolns, several Olds Aurora’s and oth-

NOVA ers, but not one of them really had the ability to kill the itch from my early days of that extreme power and acceleration. All this time something else was going on which started back in the 1930’s. My Dad’s oldest sister May (one of 9) was buying a new car every 10 years. Each driven low miles from Riverside to Jane Brown Hospital in Providence. She was a nurse there for most of her long career. I remember her 2 door 1961 charcoal grey Chevy Biscayne she traded in for the 1972 Nova. Eventually her sister (Aunt Abby) would share driving the Nova. May lived into her 90’s. Over the years there were many scary rides to their house on Cape Cod in those pristine Chevy’s. When she passed the Nova had 46K miles on the straight six with the three on the tree. And guess who ended up with it because no one else wanted it? I kept it as is for several years until a couple of friends helped me decide (as they said) ‘to just kick up the power plant’. Well, after a complete build, to my liking, by John Conti and his team, impeccable body and paint by Dennis Rossi, who also did the final assembly, and interior by Sully over at Top Stitch in East Providence, the result is unmatched.

protection needed was built in, from the “Ultrabell” transmission bellhousing to the 10 point cage. The power, sound and sparkle of the Crimson Pearl (Cadillac color) paint together makes everyone stop and ask all about it. Just getting gas can be a half hour endeavor. It lives a protected life never feeling rain and only seeing the summer months. By the way, the Nova still has Aunt May’s license plates that she had for decades on all those Chevy’s which happens to be the same initials as mine.

After numerous discussions with John and his talented team the entire body was stripped, new floor pans were butt welded and ground top and bottom, “Desert Valley” hood and fenders were added, every body panel was welded and massaged as necessary. A 427 small block Chevy was built with all the heavy duty internals, including: a “Cola” crankshaft, “Crower” rods, “Ross” pistons, a solid roller camshaft, topped off with AFR 227 heads and a single plane intake. Connecting the power is a manually shifted 400 turbo with all the heavy duty internals, and a 3400 stall speed converter. A fab 9 rear diff holding a 3.0 ring and pinion set on a Detroit locker gets the torque to the rear tires. 3 ½” inch stainless steel exhaust exits the fumes. A “Dakota Digital” dash coincides with the extremely detailed leather gut. Seat belts were installed with custom aluminum seat risers. Front suspension is a coil over suspended “Chassis Works” unit, complete with rack and pinion steering. All the CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

The police car tumbles and rolls across the highway as other vehicles traveling along the same stretch of roadway veer their cars and trucks out of the way of the approaching cruiser headed directly into the path of the fuel filled container truck. People are leaping from their driver and passenger seats with their own vehicles still rolling. The downed police officer watches in horror as people attempt to avoid the obvious when that police cruiser finally hits that container truck. Doors are flailing in the air while people scramble to the ground and leap over highway guardrails to keep from being a part of what is about to happen. The container truck driver looks at everyone in front of him jumping from their vehicles and then sees the rolling police car headed directly towards his truck and

of glass and metal flying all over the ground.

“Holy Crap!!!” yells out the truck driver.

It is all happening at a fast pace but everyone feels like it is all happening in slow motion instead.

He slams hard on his brake pedal and the container begins to come around to the front of the truck with its rear tires jumping on the blacktop making a thunderous noise. The wheel hopping is violent and everyone begins screaming and covering their ears while closing their eyes. The truck driver leaps out from his truck cab and starts to barrel roll on the roadway headed towards the grassy center meridian hoping he is not caught up in the end result of this crash. The police car jumps and rolls over the truck driver’s head as he looks up and sees the vehicle undercarriage and then body of the vehicle leaving sparks and shards

The truck driver covers his head when he finally comes to a stop face down on the ground. The police officer watches as his police car hits the fuel filled container truck;

12 VOLT NEWS The Do’s and Don’ts of Buying a Remote Car Starter GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center

PART 2 Rule #3 is….. DON’T buy from the cheapest place!! Higher price certainly doesn’t always mean that it’s being done better, but the cheapest price is almost always going to be bad news. We will definitely not be the least expensive place to find a remote car starter, but there are distinct reasons that are very important to your long term satisfaction. First of all, these things are complicated! Remote Starts are very detailed systems that have to be done right or not done at all. As I said before, installation is the key to a remote start. If the shop is doing it cheap, then they have to be doing it fast. If they are doing it fast, they are likely skimping on quality and safety to do so. Are they not installing safety features under the hood to make sure no one is ever injured by it starting accidentally while the car is being worked on? Are they not connecting super important data wires correctly, causing the remote start to work fine initially, but go nutty on you a few weeks down the road? Your vehicle is likely one of the largest investments you’ve made, do you really want it in the hands of some technician that is underpaid and always in a hurry because he needs to get to the next job ASAP to feed his family? Isn’t having the best quality in your vehicle worth a few bucks

more up front? Rule #4 is…. DON’T try to shop for price over the phone! Trust me, I understand that you feel you need to call around and look for the best price, but at the end of the day it truly is a number that you can’t really trust. Many places will quote you the cheapest price they can come up with, problem is, they’ve left off half the key features that you will really want and/or have to have. Many super stores and others will quote you something crazy like $159 installed, only for you to go in for the installation, and find out you need an additional $200 or more worth of parts to make it work with your car. The majority of vehicles out there will need an interface to make the system work properly with that particular vehicles security system. A remote car starter will NOT work without it, so what good is a price without it being accurate! Always try to take your vehicle by their location to let them see it and go over things with you. If they are blurting out prices without asking you a bunch of specific questions about your daily life and use of the vehicle, they are likely just lowballing you to do the old “bait and switch”. The last and final rule for this article is DO go to the shop to look at the options!!! I know we covered checking out the shop a few times already, but you also need to look at the remote start systems themselves! There is a good chance you’re

going to be using this system to start, lock, and unlock your car every single day for many years to come. Go by the store, check out the remotes themselves and have a specialist go over exactly how it works. Hold the remote in your hand and perform the functions yourself, making sure the remotes are comfortable to use. It sounds like a simple thing, but they really aren’t all the same! The whole point to buying an automatic starter is for the convenience and comfort it brings. Don’t settle for something that will irritate you every single day because the remote itself is pesky and you don’t like using it! While these “rules” we’ve put out there certainly don’t cover everything about remote car starters, they will definitely make a huge difference in your long term experience if you use them. If you‘re looking for a remote car starter I would love to earn your business.

Divorce is rarely easy and often means a lot of difficult decisions. One of the most important decisions is what to do about the house. In the midst of the heavy emotional and financial turmoil, what you need most is some non-emotional, straightforward, specific information and answers. Once you know how a divorce affects your home, your mortgage and taxes, critical decisions are easier. Neutral, third party information can help you make logical, rather than emotional, decisions. SERIOUS The SAFE And The SERIOUS Traffic Safety Campaign is an Award-Winning traffic safety effort that targets teens and young adults about the importance of safe driving on our roadways. Burrillville, RI. resident Jim Weicherding is the Founder and Creative Director behind this very effective visual campaign. His visual traffic safety reminders are displayed at high schools, police departments and municipalities across the state of RI. and Massachusetts in an effort to curb dangerous and reckless driving amongst teens, young adults and families in those communities. His graphic billboards, banners and posters feature classic muscle cars, hot rods and cool trucks with straight forward and to the point messages about safe driving. The most popular classic muscle car features Jim’s 1969 Pontiac GTO based upon his very popular paperback book titled OUTLAW RUN. OUTLAW RUN is also the primary sponsor of The SAFE And The SERIOUS Campaign nationwide. Nationally syndicated car talk radio shows such as American Car Classics Radio Show and Horsepower Radio Show are also sponsors of Jim’s campaign with web site features and radio interviews every couple of months to discuss his campaign and his popular book with a monthly magazine series based upon the same book. OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book is a popular series featured in automotive magazines nationwide. These same publications support TSATS with feature articles and promotions.

over the past few years for his efforts in their own communities. MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic A Association) has just made TSATS a part of their Injury Prevention Coalition and intend on implementing TSATS into nearly 400 high schools in 2016. Jim attended their quarterly meeting on December, 14th, 2015 where his campaign efforts were well received by numerous injury prevention coalitions including MADD. Jim was approached by some of these agencies and will be working with them in a creative capacity starting next year. Jim has been providing HASBRO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL with his Seasons of Safety Coloring Program materials for the past six years with monthly coloring calendars, coloring books, coloring posters and stickers featuring his Award-Winning Child Passenger Safety Mascot, BUCKLEUPALLOFUS. These items are also distributed into grade schools across New England by police departments and will now

be available at the RI Bridge and Turnpike Authority EZ-Pass Visitor’s Center. BUCKLEUPALLOFUS Coloring Posters, Coloring Books and Stickers will be available for kids and families on their counters throughout the year and especially during the busy tourist season from Memorial Day through Labor Day at the entrance to the heavily traveled Newport Bridge. BUCKLEUPALLOFUS will also be appearing in parades nationwide in 2016 as giant 38’ tall helium balloons with Parade Giants out of Arizona and Big Ideas out of New York. Parades include the 4th of July Parade held in Washington, DC. and the Thanksgiving Parade held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Indy 500 Parade in May is also on the USA BUCKLEUPALLOFUS Parade Schedule for 2016. Millions of kids will see this CPS Mascot Giant Balloon live and on television all year long.

Jim Weicherding can be reached via his email jwpisces14@aol.com for more information.

TSATS has recently been adopted by Car Guy Nation TV Show out of Dallas, Texas and will be a feature on their web site as well as a weekly promotion on their syndicated television show that will be appearing on Rev’n Channel Nationwide starting in January, 2016. Jim’s OUTLAW RUN The Book and his automotive artwork is a big part of this popular television show as well. Jim’s automotive artwork is becoming very popular with these types of radio shows and television shows host. He is designing their clothing and merchandise lines for sales nationwide in the same style images he uses for his TSATS Campaign. RI Bridge and Turnpike Authority and RI DOT Highway Safety Office have adopted TSATS for their own outreach efforts with visual displays in their locations with high traffic visibility. RI DOT Highway Safety Office is distributing TSATS Posters into high schools and police departments across the state of Rhode Island in an effort to remind teens, young adults and families to Drive Safe, Drive Serious. Popular traffic safety messages include DRIVE NOW... TEXT LATER and ‘BUCKLE UP!’ Jim has received numerous awards and honors from local, state and federal agencies for his dedication and creative efforts to try and keep kids, teens and families safer on our roadways. US Department of Transportation, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and SAFE KIDS WORLDWIDE all located in Washington, DC. have presented Jim with Awards and Honors. The state of Rhode Island recently presented him with a Citizen Service Medal in recognition for his ongoing traffic safety outreach efforts. WHERE BOB TASCA SR’S VISION HAS TAKEN THE WORLD OF DRAG RACING ED YESSAIAN

lifelong customers through honesty, trust, and the delivery of value, which eventually evolved into the TASCA slogan that “You will be satisfied”. The other famous Bob Tasca Senior quote, one that obviously hits home with many of us in the racing community, was “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday”. This simple theory formed the basis for over four decades of performance cars and the modification of those cars. From that simple slogan, Tasca’s Professional Racing Program, Mod Shop, and COBRA JET Racing car have all developed into world renowned contenders. Looking back, you could say that the creation of that original COBRA JET

Over the past few years, it has become a tradition here at Motorhead Magazine to annually pay our respects to the memory of one of Rhode Island’s most respected Hot Rodding Heroes, Bob Tasca Senior. Bob Tasca Senior was a true visionary, he was ahead of his time in so many aspects of business, racing, and professional relationships that even today, many of his business principals are quoted by not only automotive professionals but by business schools as well. One of his most wellknown business theories involved the creation of

was largely responsible for the evolution that has brought us to where we are today in the Mustang performance world. The original COBRA JET was actually quite simple in both theory and execution. Bob Tasca Senior simply shopped in his own parts inventory, for readily available factory parts and just happened to stack the right combination of components to create and unstoppable package. He took a 428 cubic inch Police interceptor engine, which was a current offering in a couple Ford models, and CONTINUED ON PAGE 51

bolted on a 427 medium riser intake manifold, a set of heads, and a Holley 735 Carburetor. At first Ford didn’t quite grasp the idea as easily as one would think but eventually would release a run of 50 Cobra Jet cars to compete in NHRA drag racing. These 50 cars paved the way for Ford’s eventual dominance in drag racing and the name COBRA JET earned its place in history as one of the most recognized performance monikers, still to this day. Unfortunately for me, all of this rich and exciting history was long before I was even born, but as they say “History repeats itself” and in 2008, Ford released a batch of 50 COBRA JET Mustangs to the public, all of which were scooped up quickly. It was in the TASCA Service department that I first got to see the 2008 version of the COBRA JET live and in person. Bob Tasca Senior and his son Carl Tasca Senior were on hand to proudly display the new car and it was a truly historic moment to see the man that created this legendary nameplate, side by side with the current version of the Drag Racing Monster that he had created. The 2008 version came with a 5.4 liter supercharged engine that was significantly underrated at 400hp. It was offered in six-speed or automatic and bragged sub-ten second elapsed times. As an added bonus, if you weren’t lucky enough to grab one of the 50 COBRA JETS offered, every single part was offered through the Ford Performance Parts catalog so that enthusiasts could take their own Mustangs to whatever level of competition they desired. At this point I truly believed that this was the baddest race car I had ever seen and I wanted one bad. But my infatuation quickly swayed when I showed up at TASCA to be greeted by Carl Tasca Senior’s latest factory rocketship- The 2012 TASCA COBRA JET. This new version of the COBRA JET was truly bittersweet. While it was definitely the baddest version of the car to date, it was unfortunate that the legend himself, Bob Tasca Senior never got to see the complete and total dominance that the TASCA COBRA JET displayed throughout the last few years. Piloted by Carl Tasca Senior, this car has always retained the title of quickest and fastest COBRA JET in the world. To date I have witnessed passes as fast as 7.57 @ 184mph, with Carl promising that “…the car feels like it still has more in it”. As we were talking about the 2012 car, at some point in the conversation, it was also mentioned that the next generation of the COBRA JET was supposed to be just as mind blowing as previous generations. Shortly after leaving TASCA FORD in Cranston, I started seeing press releases for the 2016 COBRA JET, and I have to say, it just keeps getting better!! The 2016 version of the COBRA JET is again offered in the limited production of only 50 cars, usually presold before most of us even have a chance. This variation boasts sub-eight second elapsed times with a mix of both factory available Ford parts and the absolute best aftermarket components available for straight up drag racing. The meat and potatoes of the package include a nearly indestructible version of the Coyote 5.0 engine assisted by a Whipple Supercharger. It is the only 2015+ version of the Mustang to be offered with a solid rear axle assembly. An 8.50 certified cage is also part of the package, along with 5-point harnesses and Corbeau seats. According to Carl Tasca Senior, “This is hands down one of the most impressive packages that Ford has ever offered to the racing public. For someone looking to get into serious racing, you could not build a car like this for anywhere near the price that Ford sells it for”. As I spent a bit more time chatting about the COBRA JETS and the other cars I saw in the TASCA Mod Shop, I had to ask the question- “Will we get to see a 2016 COBRA JET at the TASCA Ford Fest at New England Dragway on August 13th 2016”? The answer I received was somewhat vague but of course I reflected back to the time when Carl Tasca rolled out the black 2013 COBRA JET, BRAND NEW, at a past TASCA FORD FEST. Carl’s response was simple, “My father always firmly believed that these cars were made to be driven. It was his passion to show people what these cars could do, and by doing that, he created a sense of comradery with the enthusiast which kept the sport alive. My father led by example, and that is why, even today, we won’t put our name on anything that we don’t firmly believe will bring the customer both value and enjoyment”. That statement really impressed me because I knew Bob Tasca Senior through much of my childhood and he was one of the most genuine people you could ever meet. He was approachable in every sense of the word and I can still remember him, every single September, walking around the annual Mustang Car Show at the dealership, always grateful to those who took the time to show up for the day and display there Ford vehicle. His grandson, racing Legend Bob Tasca 3 once said “My grandfather had three loves- His family, his friends, and Ford Motor Company”. And that was the truth. As I look at what the TASCA Automotive group has developed into, all I can do is agree with his son Carl- “This was his world, this was what he loved, and he loved sharing every single bit of it with the people that mattered most to him”.
