THE BLOODHOUND

Story and photos by Tom McCarthy On Saturday, November 16th, 2019, the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC), roared across the dry lakebed racecourse out on the Hakskeenpan of Northern Cape, South Africa to a speed of 628 MPH, driven by Andy Green. For those who prefer measurements in kilometers per hour, that’s a whopping 1,010 KPH. This closed out five weeks of high speed testing, as the final target speed of surpassing 600 MPH was achieved.

In 2017, the car was first tested at Newquay Airport, in Cornwall, England and achieved speeds of over 200 MPH easily. So easy in fact, on the first day of running the car with full re-heat down the air strip, the car recorded its first full pass at 202 MPH, then later followed up with 210 MPH. On Thursday, November 17th, Bloodhound had an actual run time of 21 minutes, making back to back passes without problems. The 2017 initial shake down runs were the precursor to getting the car ready for its trip to South Africa’s Northern Cape region and the dry lakebed known as the Hakskeenpan, near the township of Rietfontein. perfectly during the Newquay testing, so the team was ready for 2018 to be a memorable one, which it was, but not the way the team had planned. Unfortunately one year after its successful outing in 2017, due to financial complications, in the fall of 2018, the Bloodhound Program LTD, as it was formerly known, went into financial administration. By December of 2018, the car was about to be cut-up and assets sold off. Then in the 11th hour, it was rescued. Continued Next Page

ND PROJECT 2019 From out of the shadows stepped a businessman with a love of cars. No real prior racing experience, but Ian Warhurst is a man with a deep and abiding love of fine cars. In fact he enjoys restoring them as a hobby. After viewing Bloodhound in person, he decided to rescue the car and see it onto a new path. First, he bought the car and all necessary equipment associated

with it along with the intellectual property rights. He then hired on the essential staff and moved the project from Bristol Harborside, in the United Kingdom, to a new shop in Berkeley Gloucestershire for a new beginning. The Bloodhound Project as it is now known, (Grafton LSR LTD) has many goals it seeks to achieve, such as surpassing the current land speed record of 763.035 MPH, set by Andy Green in 1997. The car will have to go super-sonic in the process. In order to be able to do this, new marketing partners are needed as it will take a significant amount of money to see this car to its potential. Millions of dollars need to be expended in the near future to develop and install a monopropellant hybrid rocket propulsion system. The designer, Nammo of Norway, had engineers out on the Pan during high speed testing to observe and assess the car. The Nammo rocket motor will be fueled by concentrated hydrogen peroxide to provide the additional thrust needed to assist the Rolls Royce EJ200 jet engine and push Bloodhound to super-sonic speeds. Then the team and car will have to return

to South Africa and prepare for the testing of the new propulsion system, after which they will make important decisions about pressing on to break the existing world land speed record of over 763 MPH. This is no easy task and must be performed to FIA, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Federation International Automobileâ&#x20AC;? standards. In order for The Bloodhound Project to achieve a valid new world land speed record it will have to not only exceed the speed of sound, then surpass 763.035 MPH and when they do, the team will have one hour, to reverse direction and again

eclipse the existing LSR mark. The average of the two runs will establish the new miles-per-hour for the car. If and when the Bloodhound Project sets a new world record, then and only then, will the new car owner, Ian Warhurst decide if this project will move forward to go for 1,000 MPH, the original design intended speed for Bloodhound. Ian is adamant that driver safety is number one and how the car behaves at speeds in excess of Mach 1 will determine exactly how far he is willing to allow the car to be pushed.

The Ten Year Anniversary of Bob Tasca Senior’s passing ED YESSAIAN It’s become a tradition here at Motorhead Magazine to annually pay our respects to Rhode Island’s Godfather of Ford Performance, Bob Tasca Senior. Bob Senior prided himself on delivering extraordinary car buying experienc-

friend, and an extremely valuable asset to the community. And that’s what I remember most about him, especially now that the Tasca family continues to pay it forward in any way they can. One of my first experiences with the Tasca family’s generosity was during the Project Fallen Hero Mustang restoration. The 1988 Mustang GT belonged to Major Jeffrey Calero who was killed by an I.E.D. during combat and friends of Calero joined together to rebuild his Mustang. I contacted Carl Tasca Senior because I was at a complete loss trying to find discontinued and obsolete parts. Through his parts department, we were able to locate almost every part we needed and they were all DONATED by Tasca Automotive Group in honor of Major Calero, per Bob Tasca Senior. Another instance of the Tasca family’s generosity came at the beginning stages of my Charity Challenge Drag Racing Shootout at New England Dragway. The event consisted of Drag Racing, a Car Show, and a cookout and all proceeds from the event were donated to charities chosen by the winners of the racing tournament. Due to weather concerns one year the attendance was not enough to cover the thousands of dollars that were promised to the charities so I personally made up the difference from my own pocket. When he found out what I had done, Carl Tasca Senior cut me a check to help recover some of my losses and he now makes an annual donation to the event in honor of his father.

The greatest contribution to the community made by the Tasca Automotive Group is definitely their annual Mustang and Live Music Event, celebrating its 22nd year in 2019. This show is one of the largest Ford Car Shows in the area and all proceeds go to the Rhode Island Food Bank. This was one of Bob Tasca Senior’s favorite events for many reasons. It allowed him to obviously

help the RI Food Bank, but he truly LOVED spending time with customers who had purchased their Ford performance vehicle from his dealership. My favorite Bob Senior moment at this event was the year he told me on a Friday evening to get to the show early Saturday morning because it was going to be packed. Of course I dawdled my morning away and when I finally arrived the place was jam packed with show cars. I eventually found Bob Senior patrolling on a golf cart and whined to him about where my SVT Cobra had been parked. Bob Sr radioed to a couple of the lot kids to move some brand new cars and he made me my own personal spot at the entrance of the show. As always it was a great day and I have only missed a handful of these shows in the past 20 years. My 3 year old son Xander has now been to this show 3 times and will obviously continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

Having my son share these moments with me has already created many special memories and that is exactly what Bob Tasca Senior was about- FAMILY. One of the things about this show that always impresses me is that EVERY SINGLE member of the Tasca family attends. They spend the day greeting everyone and personally thanking people for coming. That was what Bob Senior did; he appreciated friends, family, and customers. So in closing I would like to once again thank Bob Senior for the legacy he created and the values he instilled in his family to keep his traditions alive. OFF-ROADING VS. OVERLANDING By BILL PRATT One of the big new focal points of the 2019 SEMA Show was an entire section devoted to Overlanding. Off-roading has always been a big part of the show and the automotive world. Overlanding, while not exactly new to the rugged individuals who pioneered it, is relatively new as a focus of aftermarket manufacturers, and it is growing in popularity. It’s easy to think off-roading and overlanding are the same thing, and there is certainly some overlap between the two. But they are not the same. Here’s a quick comparison of the two from Mike Waldron at hiconsumption. com:

OFF-ROADING AT A GLANCE Purpose: Overcoming challenging obstacles.

Time Frame: Day to multi-day w/ camping. Camping: Often car camping in established campgrounds. Risk: Moderate to high depending on skill and obstacles.

OVERLANDING AT A GLANCE Purpose: Exploration & adventure travel. Time Frame: Weeks to years across great distances. Camping: In or around remote campgrounds. Risk: Low to moderate depending on terrain.

Your typical off-roader often has a separate vehicle which has been highly modified. The off-roader is looking to test the limits and endurance of himself and his vehicle. There are designated 4x4 areas in nature as well as a growing number of artificially-created 4x4 venues with different areas for different skill levels, equipment levels and specific conditions. So a mud pit, a rock crawl, and trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced drivers and vehicles. These are the people you see competing to drive straight up a cliff or down a steep and rocky hill or through a river bed with water up over the hood. A die-hard off-roader has nerves of steel and enjoys pushing the

envelope of what they can do and where they can go. Of course, as with anything else, there are the occasional off-roaders and the ones who just want to be able to get a little bit off the beaten path without having to repair their vehicle after every trip out. The aftermarket manufacturers cater to whatever degree of thrill-seeking you’re after. Overlanding is adventure travel. Rather than a day trip, the overlander usually travels for an extended period of time over changing terrain. They are prepared for the worst but generally seek to avoid it. That’s not the kind of thrill they’re looking for. Many will never drive very far off the beaten path or really use the off-road capabilities of their vehicles, and that’s okay. There are a lot of amazing places that are accessible to them. When they outfit their vehicles for overlanding, their focus is on comfort and usability. A good overland vehicle will keep you dry in the rain, warm in the snow and cold, protect you from the wind as well as bugs and predators, and let you store and prepare food under all conditions.

While people have been overlanding for more than 15 years, with many who travel for months or years at a time and venture through foreign countries, it is only recently that aftermarket manufacturers have begun to recognize its potential and offer products to enhance the experience. So now you can outfit your overland vehicle with beds, stoves, refrigerators, and showers as well as have the ability to carry your mountain bikes, canoes, kayaks and other equipment on the outside. Overlanders can go as minimalist or as maximalist (is that a word?) as they want and find something to suit their needs. Overlanding has grown so much in popularity that there is even a national convention dedicated to it. The Overland Expo will be held in three locations in 2020: Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, in May, Overland Expo Mountain West in Loveland, Colorado, in August, and Overland Expo East in Arrington, Virginia, in October. TRUCKIN’ 2020 JIM WEICHERDING

I’m not sure if it’s a new trend but I’m hoping that it will soon become one with automotive enthusiasts across the region. Truckin’! Cool “Old School” pick up trucks are always a great attraction to any Classic Car Show and/or Cruise Night. Just like my classic Black-on-Black Chevy pickup truck, there are more classic trucks showing up at area car shows and cruise nights across New England every year. Why do they always call these venues Car Shows anyway? We should start calling them Car & Truck Shows. Why leave the word “Truck” out of the lineup when we promote these types of automotive venues? Add “Truck” too. What, are we truck owners not good enough to be in the name of these venues and events? Lol! A lot of my friends own and drive classic and custom trucks to these venues all the time. Me too! What about us? I’d really like to start seeing that happen down the road more often than not. We aren’t aliens showing up with our UFO’s for Pete’s sake. We are cruising in our pickup trucks to attend these venues and events throughout the season too. I have yet to see any fliers read: Classic Car & Truck Show unless it’s a Touch-A-Truck Car Show where everyone can touch a truck but not a car. Maybe this year it will be different and promoters reading this article will remember that there are truck owners out here too. Not just car owners. This article is not about any specific club or referencing any group or organization. It’s just pointing out that the Ocean State has hot rodder’s too. And quite a few of them. I like seeing these hot rods cruising down Ocean State streets, roadways and highways during the popular cruising season every year. Who doesn’t? Unless you aren’t into this kinda car and truck stuff and you wouldn’t be reading this article in the first place. If you are reading this article that means you picked up this magazine at one of our fine distribution locations or at some mall events during the off car show season because you are interested in what the content of this publication has to offer. Then this article absolutely applies to you. Hot rods are incredibly awesome means of transportation. I mean, c’mon! Hot rods? How cool does it even get? I’m hoping Hot Rods stay around for decades to come and those that know nothing about them grow interested in these magnificent machines. Small blocks, big blocks and everything that comes with them is very appealing to anyone that loves everything about cars. You have to appreciate where they came from even if they were manufactured long before you were born. I know that I do. It won’t be long before the winter is behind us and spring shows up to bring us a whole new season of classic car and truck shows and cruise nights for the year 2020. I’m sure many of you are already gearing up for the new cruisin’ season now that the holidays are over and spring begins in the month of March. It won’t be long now. A couple more months and it will be time to bring out all of those great Hot Rods and cruise the roadways and highways to destinations not only across the Ocean State, but states all across New England too. Personally, it can’t get here soon enough for me!

The 2020 SHELBY GT500 MUSTANG By MIKE GALLO Once again Ford Motor Company has done something astounding. The new Shelby GT500 Mustang for 2020 puts out an astounding 760 horsepower via a 5.2 liter V8 motor backed by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The horsepower wars seem to keep going up and up as of the last few years which is great for us consumers. You can’t go wrong with a supercharged motor that puts out ample amounts of power. With a base price of $73,995 it is a great bargain but the car can go past $95,000 depending on which options you choose. The car also has a carbon fiber package you can get that comes with carbon fiber wheels and a rear seat delete. Did I mention the aforementioned carbon fiber package cost $18,500? A little pricey for me but who knows, maybe you can afford it.

Mercury cars are a familiar sight in Maroa, IL. Initially built at the former Ford plant in Lorain, Ohio, this 1967 Mercury Comet Capri displays its white with a maroon vinyl top exterior and red cloth bench seat interior well. Rob May, director of the Central California Mercury Club CCMC, reached out to Craig Duff, the Comet’s owner. Craig, a custom cabinet maker, and his wife, Melissa, have two sons named Jaret and Drake. What motivated me to purchase the Comet was that it was rare and nobody had one.” At the time of purchase, the condition of the car was average. After purchasing the car, Craig had two uncles who ran a garage in Tucson that worked on the car while he was Illinois. They installed new tires, brakes, shocks, and a speedometer cable. ER’S PET

By MIKE GALLO Now that you have stopped staring at this month’s cover model maybe I can have your undivided attention. Most of us know that throughout our years of school that one or more of our teachers had a pet. Not the animal type pet but a favorite student in her or his classroom. This car is considered our teachers pet in the form of a DODGE CHALLENGER HELLCAT. And this is what you can do to it with a little bit of tuning and a few minor bolt-ons. The car in question is owned by none other than the owner of Motorhead Magazine, Louie Cicerone. He bought the car brand new in 2016 and had something in mind to do with it. Specifically, a goal he wanted to achieve was drag racing the car. Everybody knows about the Dodge Challenger Hellcat and its brother, the Dodge Charger Hellcat, and what these cars are capable of, as far as the horsepower they produce right from the factory. Louie set out with pu�ng on a Legmaker cold air intake and changing the superchargers pulley while also keying the crankshaft, just in case, to deal with the added boost pressure. There weren’t too many guys that were capable of tuning these cars when they came out so Louie made a phone call to Karl’s East Coast speed of Warwick, RI to see if they could tackle the job. After learning how to tune the car properly they bolted the car down to the Dyno and with the added modifications the car put down 850

rear wheel horsepower through the stock catalytic converters and stock exhaust system. That is impressive considering this car has all the creature comforts of most modern cars while still retaining all of its drivability. With a set of drag radials bolted on the back of the car and nothing else done Louie’s car has clicked off a 10.50 E T at more than 130 miles per hour at New England Dragway

in Epping, NH. And might I mention the car ran that fast after driving it all the way up there. There aren’t too many cars around that can do that or say that for bragging rights. Most cars that run that fast have to be trailered up to the track and trailered home. And they sure can’t be daily driven. You must hand it to Dodge, they

built this car correctly as it is very fast bone stock and can be made even faster with a few simple modifications. Cars have come a long way in the last 10 to 15 years as far as horsepower and reliability go. And you wonder why this car is the teacher’s pet? As of right now Louie is considering trading the car in and maybe moving on to something else, but nothing is in writing, although we have talked about a particular car he is thinking of ge�ng to do some more drag racing with. TRI TRACK OPEN MODIFIED SERIES FORMS ALLIANCE WITH PEPSI By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK SEEKONK, Mass. -- Tri Track Open Modified Series officials announced on Thursday they have entered an alliance with Pepsi, effective for the start of the 2020 season. This alliance with Pepsi is just one of many additions planned for the new season and will continue to provide drivers and race teams with additional incentives while competing with the Tri Track Open Modified Series. Pepsi products are well-known, not only across the country, but the globe. As part of this alliance, the Pepsi Challenge has been announced for heat races at all six events during the 2020 season. Each of the heat race winners will receive a bonus as part of this Pepsi Challenge. “This gives us a name brand behind us, which will help us in every aspect of our series,” Wayne Darling, Managing Partner of the Tri Track Open Modified Series, and owner of Seekonk Grand Prix in Seekonk, Massachusetts, said. “We are looking forward to working with Pepsi in this alliance.” Both Darling and series Managing Partner Ed Bennett are working on specific details surrounding the entire season and will release more information soon. The Tri Track Open Modified Series website is currently under construction, with a new platform set to roll out soon. Pre-registration for the 2020 season will be released in January. The 2020 Tri Track Open Modified schedule includes six races at four different tracks across two different states. The season begins at Monadnock 42| Motorhead Magazine - January 2020

Speedway on Saturday, May 2, and continues high up in New Hampshire at Claremont Speedway on Sunday, May 24. PART X Randolph stares at the punks while the high school students leaving school for the day walk up to their vehicles with cash in their hands.

“Maybe there is something that we can do about it,” said, Randolph. One of his friends responds harshly, “We have already attended 56 funerals over the past years saying goodbye to our fallen friends. We don’t need you to become funeral number 57 Randy.” Randolph stares across the street and watches the street punks passing packets of drugs to the high school students in exchange for their cash from inside their cars. “Somebody has to do something about that,” said, Randolph. One of his buddies replies, “Yeah, who, you?” and starts to laugh under his breath. “Maybe me!” said Randolph. His two war buddies stare across the street now and the punks catch sight of their piercing eyes watching them from the inside of the diner. The waitress brings them their orders and she looks across the street and watches the punks deal their drugs to the high school students. “What’s next? she asks, “They start dealing to the middle school and grade school students down the street in the other direction?” Randolph replies, “Not today they aren’t. He steps out from behind the table and walks out the front door leading to the parking lot and then the street. He sees the punks looking back at him and they start putting away their drug packs and cash. Randolph continues to walk towards the street punks and the high school students. His two war buddies are also exiting the diner and quickly catching up to him as he makes his way across the street. The high schoolers start leaving the area and the punks start their vehicles and attempt to leave the area too. Randolph steps in front of one of the lead vehicles as if to dare the driver to run him down. The driver stops before that happens. “Hey old man. What in the hell do you think you are doing?” the driver yells out of his window. Randolph replies, “I’m just standing here punk. Etch is now looking for the nearest highway on ramp but that could be a long way off. As he drives through a four way intersection Etch glances to his right and sees two police cars approaching fast with their overhead lights flashing and sirens blaring. He mats the gas pedal and OUTLAW lunges ahead with accelerated speed. The two pursuing police cruisers rapidly close in behind the black GTO but Etch is already four steps ahead of them and knows what he has to do next to avoid being captured and arrested. OUTLAW isn’t exactly the easiest vehicle to pursue and stop and the area police departments are fully aware of Etch’s driving capabilities. This has got to be the longest chase scene in the history of chase scenes and Etch would contact (Ripley’s Believe It, Or Not) or the (World Book of Records), if he only had five minutes to find them online and submit his story for review. Even the longest chase in the history of feature movies only lasted about an hour, if that. Etch shakes his head from side to side in disgust knowing that all of this is

happening because the government can’t leave well enough alone and tries to dictate how we live our lives. Taking away our freedom to drive classic cars and trucks on America’s roadways and forcing us to install restrictor plates to reduce horsepower is un-American. Banning these vehicles from being driven is just wrong and turning a law-abiding citizen with no prior criminal record into an Outlaw because he won’t be pushed around is just wrong! Etch has to find a gas station soon or he’s gonna run out of gas and a whole lotta luck if the OUTLAW GTO runs out of fuel and ends up on the side of the road somewhere. He drives a little while longer and sees a gas station sign over the tree tops about a mile up the road. He slowly continues his drive until he finally reaches that gas station. The jet black GTO rolls up to one of the gas pumps and Etch notices that there signs all read [Self-Service]. “Looks like I’m pumping my own gas. What happened to the good ‘ole days when a service attendant would put gas in your vehicle, wash the windshield

and ask you if they check under your hood?” Etch exits the muscle car now sitting exposed to everyone and anyone driving by or already at the gas station. “Hi, can I have a fill up on pump three extra leaded?” Etch asks the clerk behind the counter with a smile. “That’s a real nice ride you have there buddy. What kind of car is that?” asks the clerk. Etch replies, “A very fast one.” Suddenly, a young boy walks out from behind a door behind the counter. “Wow! Cool car!” said the young boy. He runs out of the gas station front door to get a closer look at the GTO now parked in front of the gas pumps. Etch tosses the clerk two twenties and tells him to keep the change if there is any after he fuels up. Etch follows the young boy outside.

By CHRIS SHRIVER Mercury short track racecars are a rare breed. Central California Mercury Club CCMC is always on the hunt for oval track (paved or asphalt) racing Mercury cars. Rob May, director of CCMC, relays the story on this vintage 1973 Mercury Montego GT dirt track car found in Salem, Alabama! Chris Shriver tells his family’s Mercury racing history. Mike Shriver, Chris’s dad, is the car owner. Mike is a professional automotive machinist. Dad was 8 years old when his father took him to his first race. It was the 1968 NASCAR race at Atlanta. A young kid named Cale Yarborough dominated that race in a #21 Mercury owned by the Wood Brothers. That day started Continued Next Page

EGO MUDSLINGER a love obsession with racing and that #21 Mercury that would last for over 50 years. Dad started racing with a friend named Luke North in 1986 with a old Lincoln Jalopy. In 1989 they decided their old racecar was out dated and they started building a new racecar. That racecar would forever change the racing world in East Alabama. They started with a bare 1967 Thunderbird frame and built the racecar from scratch. They were given a Mercury Montego GT factory 429 car for the body. A 460 big block Ford was assembled with a set of 429SCJ heads crowning the top. For the advantage of starts and restarts a custom powerglide was built. (Restarting in low gear, that car was an absolute rocket!) Up until that point all street stocks built in the area were built from a gutted car. This was one of the first if not the first car to have the chassis professionally built then the drivetrain installed and a body shell sat on top. When building the chassis there was no “grey area” of the rulebook unused. The left side wheelbase was shortened. The panhard bar chassis and rearend mounts swapped sides and the engine was set back. It was the only Ford at the race track so the competitors and the tech inspectors might as well had been reading Chinese, they had no clue. This car was nicknamed The Chevrolet Assassin. At the time Chevys slogan was “The Heartbeat of America”. Our slogan was “Flatline, the heartbeat stops here” Dad never had the budget to race every weekend. At most, he raced once a month when he could afford it. In the 13 years the car was raced it has over a 50% win percentage. The only season it ever raced for a points championship it won 15 out of 19 races. The car was officially retired in the mid 2000’s after a tornado blew a tree over it. In recent years, the tree damage has been fixed. It now currently sits, resting, awaiting its restoration. We can’t wait for when this unique Mercury Montego is revived!

Well Motorhead’s, it’s the year 2020. A whole new year of anything can happen and anything will happen. 2019 was not the best of years for this writer and any marked improvement in the New Year will be very welcome. We lost some family members and friends along the way and that is not easy to take during any year but that seems to be the trend lately. The saddest part is that we lost friends and or family members this past year. We also lost automotive enthusiasts and that takes away a lot

too. Most of you reading this article are probably dealing with similar losses and I feel for you as well. Too many classic cars and trucks either being parked in the garage for long periods of time because the owners are no longer with us, or they are being sold to strangers that cannot really appreciate what those vehicles really meant to those owners and those owner’s family members and friends.

I’m hoping that is not always the case. Looking in our rear view mirrors on the year that just passed us by is not always going to be a good reflection. But what else can we do about it?

Try to be a little more compassionate and friendlier to those around us in the New Year. Appreciate what we have instead of dwelling on what we don’t have would be a great start. If you take any pleasure in making sure others around you are upset and unhappy in this classic car and truck hobby and lifestyle then you need to find something else to do with your life. Embrace the New Year and the day with a better attitude and outlook that helps everyone have a reason to smile or be a little bit happier than they are right now. When it comes right down to it, changing poor attitudes into better attitudes not only benefits those around you, it also benefits you as well. There is a reason why the rear view mirror is so small and the windshield is so big. You aren’t going backwards in life, you are moving ahead in life. So Buckle Up! and keep moving ahead and keep your hands on that steering wheel with your eyes focused on that windshield and what’s in front of you. Not always what’s behind you. Reflection is good. But you definitely do not want to keep looking back. You’ll miss what’s coming when you always look at what’s behind you. 5 Mistakes People Make When Buying a Remote Car Starter GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR.

more. They start and stop the vehicle from a distance. That’s it, and that might be good enough for you. Others have multiple functions, ranging from keyless entry and trunk release to heated seats and rear window defrost.

A remote car starter can be one of the best additions that you can make to your vehicle. It can also be a very confusing purchase. Our intent with this post is to help you avoid some of the most common mistakes that people make when buying remote car starters.

NOT BUYING A REMOTE CAR STARTER WITH ENOUGH RANGE I use the word “range” even though I hate to. Manufacturers have no choice but to put “500foot range” or “3,000-foot range” on their packaging. It is important to keep in mind that these are absolutely perfect numbers – in environments with no RF interference, no walls, no windows and no buildings to go around… In other words, the middle of the desert! Range is unimportant for most people. Not many of our customers need to start their vehicles from more than 1,000 feet away. But almost everyone wants to start a vehicle from inside a building. That is where transmitter power becomes important. At A Custom Car Stereo Center, we talk about transmitter power rather than range. Our 500foot model is the one that all others are based on. Our 1,500-foot model is considered “3X” power (3 times the transmitter strength of our base model). Our 5,000-foot model is considered “10X” power. We feel this gives our customers a better indication of what they are getting. Don’t shortchange yourself with transmitter range (power). You are going to use your starter in more places than your home or workplace. You will want to use it from the mall, sporting events, parking garages, hospitals, restaurants, etc. If in doubt, pay a little more to get a more powerful unit. You want your car to be running when you get to it!

NOT HAVING YOUR REMOTE CAR STARTER PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED Professional installation is the key to a quality remote car starter experience. Do not trust your vehicle to the lowest bidder! Remote starters involve complicated installs in today’s vehicles, so it is important that the installation be done properly. One mistake can create thousands of dollars in damage not covered under your vehicle’s warranty. I don’t say that to scare you off. A trained professional can do the job correctly, avoiding costly mistakes and helping you maximize the enjoyment of your new remote car starter. Speaking of your vehicle’s warranty, a properly installed remote car starter will not void your vehicle’s warranty, regardless of what your dealer says!

Do not trust the install to your family or your local mechanic. You wouldn’t bring your vehicle to the local mobile electronics installer for an engine overhaul or transmission repair. Go to a specialist! Above all, do not trust your cousin, your friend or your cousin’s friend to do the install! Unless someone is a seasoned installer with real-world training and experience, they are not qualified to work on today’s vehicles. Obviously, there may be some exceptions to these comments, but the exceptions are few and far between. Use your head!

BUYING A POOR-QUALITY REMOTE CAR STARTER You can buy a remote car starter at the local auto parts store for $79.99. It comes with an instructional DVD that claims that you can install it yourself. Don’t believe it. You probably can’t! These remote starters are usually of lower quality than the units that you would buy at a specialty retailer like A Custom Car Stereo Center. In most cases, a quality manufacturer of remote car starters will require professional installation and frown upon over-the-counter sales. They know that the odds of failure decrease exponentially when a professional does the work. The problem is that most people do not know a high-quality brand from a low-quality brand when it comes to remote car starters. A good rule of thumb is to search out the best shop in your market. It is a fair assumption that they will sell and install what they perceive as a high-quality brand. If you trust the shop, you can trust their choice in the products that they carry. Think about it this way: If that is a good shop, they probably sell and install tons of remote starters. Do you think they would choose an inferior product, knowing that it would create all kinds of headaches for them? Probably not.

NOT GETTING A REMOTE CAR STARTER WITH THE PROPER FEATURE SET Remote car starters offer a lot of convenience options. Be sure to ask the right questions when buying your starter. Some models are simply what they sound like: a remote car starter, and nothing

A common mistake when considering options includes assuming that certain things might “just work” with the starter. For example, the rear window defroster will not just come on if you left it on. It is on a latched output that resets when the power is shut off – that is, every time you turn off the vehicle. This feature has to be specifically added to almost all installs. Another common mistake is not adding keyless entry on newer vehicles. On most newer vehicles, the factory keyless entry does not function when the vehicle is running. This means that, when your vehicle is remote started and you walk up to it, the factory keyless will not unlock the doors. You would have to use the key in the door (old school) or shut the car down with the remote starter, unlock it with the factory remote and then restart it with the key. Neither is a great choice. The solution is to choose a remote starter that incorporates keyless entry. A remote starter equipped with keyless entry will allow you to unlock the vehicle without having to shut down the car. A quality shop can talk you through these options and make recommendations based on your needs. If you find a shop you trust, the rest is easy.

BUYING A REMOTE STARTER AT ONE PLACE AND GETTING IT INSTALLED AT ANOTHER NEVER…. repeat, NEVER, buy a remote starter at one shop and have it installed somewhere else. That is the biggest mistake you can make. You always want to have your starter installed at the very same place where you bought it. Do not make the mistake of buying the eBay/Wal-Mart/ Auto Parts Store deal. Most quality shops will not install a remote starter that was purchased elsewhere. You will be left with the second- and third-tier shops that might agree to do this. If the place you are considering buying a remote starter does not offer installation, do not buy it from them. I wrote a post awhile back that goes into great detail about why you should always have your remote car starter installed at the same place where you buy it. Take the time to read that post if you are tempted by the “deal of the day” online.
