What’s Happening at The Action Track of the East Jay Pjojian’s Immaculate SVT COBRA Ed Yessaian
There’s really no other felling like taking delivery of your first Mustang or Muscle Car, especially when you’re in your early teenage years. The first time you lay eyes on that aggressive stance, the first smell of the leather interior, the first feeling of that rumble that happens after your first turn of the key. Every one of us can recall what seemed like the greatest day of our life when we got behind the wheel of our very own piece of American History. For Jason Pjojian of Cranston RI, that amazing sense of ownership and pride came to reality this past summer when he got his hands on his immaculate 1997 SVT COBRA. Jason is the third owner of the car, but both of the first

READERS RIDES GREG’S 1930 MODEL A TRUCK
Written by ETCH We don’t often get to go all the way back to the birth of the automobile in this country for a READERS RIDES feature article, but we can do that with this 1930 Model A. Greg Benoit, of Massachusetts, purchased this vintage ride fully restored from a restoration specialist located in Connecticut and only made some modifications to bring it to the vehicle’s current condition. This Model A truck came equipped with a flat head four cylinder engine, but the engine that now rests in the motor compartment is acutally a built flat head four cylinder engine that was completely refurbished at a New York based speed shop that deals specifically with these types of engines last year. It runs like a top! An “Old School” car guy, who has spent his entire adult life working on these types of vintage vehicles from Ware, Massachusetts, installed the engine and made certain that the engine application was period correct and was exactly the way it was the day it rolled off the assembly line in Detroit, Michigan. That assembly line was all manpower back in the

Camaro Z28
DAVE McCLAIN In 2014 Chevrolet introduced the Camaro Z28. The purpose of the car was to show how well they could build a street-able road race car sold to the public. The quarter mile times are in my opinion are lack luster. The heavy Camaro with the 505HP LS7 borrowed from C6 Corvette Z06 could only run 12.3 at 117mph. That’s not tragic for a car never designed for the quarter mile. To compare a 2014 Camaro SS 1LE runs the quarter mile in 12.8 @ 111mph and a Camaro ZL1 rolls thru at 12.4 @ 115mph. The real performance of the Z28 comes in the corners. Initial testing at Nurburgring in inclement weather yielded a best time of 7.37.47. That was pretty awesome compared to the 580 HP Camaro ZL1 at 7.41.27., in relatively good weather conditions. The Camaro Z28 has several performance upgrades design exclusively for track duty. In order to pull over 1.08 g in cornering grip, they introduced a whole new suspension designed and based around a nice beefy Pirelli Trofeo 305/30ZR19 tire. The Camaro Z28 has the largest front tire ever put on a production car. These tires are really only designed for track use, so don’t get caught in a rain storm. Once they get to proper operating temperature the grip is amazing. A new set of tires rings in at over $2000. They revised the springs, anti-roll bars, and introduced new Multimatic Dampers to help control the car under all racing conditions. The whole suspension is fine-tuned with PTM. Chevrolet’s Performance Traction Management systems allows for
different levels of computer intervention based on driver skill level and weather conditions. It will keep the Z28 safe under all driving conditions or race conditions. It can even be shut off for the most experienced drivers. They really designed the body of the car for increased down force at high speeds. Special front and rear spoilers provided an additional 410lbs of downforce over a stock Camaro SS. The aero package on the car really give it an aggressive race car look. Probably the best upgrade over a regular Camaro SS is the new Carbon Ceramic-Matrix rotors and Brembo 6-piston front and 4 piston rear calipers. This impressive break package can provide over 1.5 g of breaking deceleration. Allowing for late breaking into the corners at the track with very little fade. A lot of my friends are asking me to upgrade my 2010 Camaro SS to a New 2015 Camaro Z28. I really wish I had unlimited funds, I would buy one and keep my Camaro SS. The problem is that the Z28 isn’t a practical everyday car for me. I couldn’t drive it all year long like my Camaro. The tires would be useless in the cold miserable Rhode Island weather. I wonder if the 2015 Z28 with a sticker price around $75,000,

Last year’s 41st Fall event had 5062 Show Cars, around 1500 corral cars and just over a 3000 vendors. According to the Fall program the show started when Stu Sarjeant and his four year old son were refused admission to a local car parade because his 1923 T-bucket had been modified. His son started to cry, so they decided to have a show of their own. The first Turkey Run was held in 1974 and since then the Daytona Beach Street Rods have contributed over $400,000 to over two dozen local groups and charities. The events have several raffles of vehicles. A 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T convertible, hosting a 440 six pack, was the top prize the Shriners were offering, with the proceeds to be donated to the Alzheimer Foundation. The Daytona Beach Street Rods offered a 1973 Nova that will be given away at the November run, last autumn a 1970 Mustang was the prize. A Harley Davidson was also being raffled off with proceeds to support Veterans. Vendors basically had either new products for

The 2015 Corvette Z06 Dave Messere
For 2015, Gm has released the new Corvette Z06, the high-performance variant of the new for 2014 Corvette Stingray. The big news here is the 650hp supercharged LT4 engine, a small block engine with 6.2 liters of displacement. With 650 ft/lbs of torque, This Vette has more grunt than a Ferrari F12 or a Lamborghini Aventador, both 12 cylinder supercars costing several times more.
The first Z06, appearing on the 1963 Stingray, combined a 36 gallon gas tank with heavy duty brakes and suspension in a package to support owners who wanted to race their cars and circumvent GM’s ban of motorsport racing at that time. The Z06 was brought back for the 2001 model year as a track focused car available with a hard top and manual transmission only....until now!

Brian and Karri’s Silverado is like no race car you have ever seen. Even from a distance, the smooth as glass finish done by Brian Bell will tell you how meticulous they were in building it. The actual build began in 2000 and is constantly evolving and getting faster. Obviously, none of us can truly say our cars are “done. The heart of this monster started with a Dart Block and is a Scott Shafiroff conventional head, short deck 598ci masterpiece. Al Staffieri ported and flowed an Edelbrock 632 intake and a set of Brodix 380 heads. Final Compression ratio is 16:1. Since I am Truck Girl I need to write about this beautiful 1995 Chevy K1500 Z71…it was a Florida Truck, it has absolutely no rot or rust, with a Dual Cowl hood, 6.5 inch Rough Country suspension lift kit, 3
inch body lift, wrapped in 35/1250/R15 General Grabber All Terrain 2 so you can get yourself out of almost anything even the deepest mud hole. This was a Show Trucks USA truck, it has a custom dual exhaust with a 5.7L V8 (the best small block engine Chevy ever made) it has 233K and still running strong. This truck is not a pavement princess and is well taken care of, she likes to get dirty but at the end of the night she’s always clean. This truck is a real head turner; it gets attention everywhere it goes. This jacked up truck belongs to Jon Maggs who would like to trade or sell her for a classic Chevy or muscle car. SHOTGUN MANEUVER: THE RIDE-ALONG EXPERIENCE
THE RUSTY WALLACE RACING EXPERIENCE
LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO The term “shotgun” was loosely dubbed in the year of 1919 and applied to a special armed employee of the express service using a stagecoach for transportation of bullion or cash who would sit beside the driver while carrying a short shotgun to provide an armed response to bandits. Later down the line, the term has been applied to a game which is usually occurring between friends who would be the first to call “shotgun” to pick the passenger seat next to the driver. At the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, the term of “shotgun” gives a much greater meaning to a once in a lifetime adventure.
Have you ever wanted to know what it would feel like just to be side by side with a professional circle track driver, to be thrown back in your seat, and experience actual G-force? The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience does offer the thrill of getting one-on-one instructions and track “feel” as part of their driving packages or just as a short endeavor for those who dare! These “Ride Along” or “Shotgun Experiences” of add-ons can be purchased before you arrive to the track or on the spot as part of your driving package. No insurance on the race car is needed as your “chauffeur” is in control of the vehicle at all times, however

you do have the option of purchasing a video beforehand to catch all the action at all angles, or perhaps the availability of a plaque with you suited up with your race car at the end of the ride would be sufficient for the “man cave” or “ladies den”. READERS RIDES 1966 PONTIAC LEMANS SPRINT
The classic car enthusiast continued to use his 1966 Pontiac as a daily driver until eventually having more serious issues with his ride. He decided to put the classic car into storage until 2010. Xtreme Restorations was eventually contracted to completely restore the classic 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint by the owner who resides in the area to this day. After plenty of hours worth of skilled craftsmanship and body work, fresh paint and mechanical upgrades to this once kept stored classic ride, it is now better than brand new, factory floor condition thanks to Todd and his crew at Xtreme Restorations. This 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint is as it appears and runs should be considered by many to now be better-than-new condition. I would agree. The photos tell the story and speak volumes about this vehicle’s current condition. This Pontiac features a Triple White paint job. The original motor was rebuilt and installed. The 230 engine boasts 207 horsepower and has an overhead cam. Not too bad for a 6 cylinder engine.
Written by ETCH Before this gorgeous 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint was brought to Xtreme Restorations located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island for a complete restoration, it was a California classic car. The owner purchased this Pontiac at the time of his discharge from military service in the year 1974. He actually drove the classic car all the way from California to New England after his military service ended and continued using it as a daily driver until the engine started giving him ongoing troubles. The original engine was removed and replaced with a Chevy 350 small block motor. The original engine was put into storage at the request of the owner.
Getting it from one gear to another is a 3 speed manual transmission. This classic Pontiac ran a 14.9 second, 1/4 mile, at 90 miles per hour at the drag strip. Thanks to the efforts of the crew at Xtreme Restorations, this 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint took home Best Paint, Best Restored Convertible and Best in Class Awards at the 2015 Boston World of Wheels Cruise Event this past March. That’s very impressive! CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

COPS, CARS & CRUISIN’ KIDS
JIM WEICHERDING
June is “Get Out of School!” Month in Rhode Island and across New England. It is also the start of the busy travel time of the year with kids and families headed to the beaches, family cook-outs, weddings, vacation spots, restaurants, drive-in movies and cruise nights, just to name a short list of traveling destinations when we put our kids and grandkids in the back seats of our family vehicles and head off to parts unknown in the summer season. What we can tend to forget in our busy, hustle and bustle lives, is our family safety and what we can do to help keep our kids safer during our travels. Whether it is just a short trip to the local grocery store, or a long drive headed to the beaches and seafood restaurants from South County Rhode Island to Cape Cod. Child Passenger Safety should be on the minds of every single person placing a child inside a vehicle.
gent when it comes to their children when driving in the family vehicle. But this article is for those of you are not in this category.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I recently witnessed a woman with two little kids in her vehicle pull up next to my truck at a local gas station. She was not wearing a seat belt and neither were the two children who were passengers in her car. I looked over at the woman sitting behind the wheel of her car and told her that her kids should be wearing a seat belt. When I glanced in the back seat of the vehicle I notice that she had a toddler jumping up and down and there was no car seat. This child should have been properly restrained in a car seat, but was not even buckled up. I also told her that she could lead by example and wear her own seat belt so maybe her kids would do the same thing. She ignored me.
Buckle up your kids!!! If they are infants and toddlers, then they belong in a car seat, or a booster seat. You can find out this information by checking web sites of plenty of Child Passenger Safety Advocates and Traffic Safety Groups and Organizations. Safe Kids Worldwide located in
Stickers, Magnets, Puzzles and a variety of other kids items in an ongoing attempt to alter lives in a positive way. Hasbro Children’s Hospital has been a recipient of my creative outreach efforts for the past six years. Since 2009, I have been creating and donating these coloring formats and safety reminders to kids and families to try and keep them safer on our roadways. I started this creative child safety effort two decades ago at area cruise nights and car shows by passing out Buckleupallofus Coloring Books to the kids and their parents. It has grown since then to become a primary cartoon character mascot for child passenger safety advocates, police officers, first responders, school teachers and parents across the USA. If you happen to see any adult driving a vehicle this summer season and their children are not properly restrained please advise them to do so before something serious happens to them in a vehicle crash. Thinking that it can never happen to you, or your family does not remove that possibility. Drive Smart, Drive Serious!

vehicles. Another woman took the cake while I was traveling to a cruise night located in Connecticut on a Saturday night. She was driving an open door Jeep with a soft vinyl top and she had two little boys riding with her. I stopped to tell her to put her kids in seat belts and she proceeded to give me the finger and sped off in the opposite direction. I just shook my head side-to-side and wondered how long before one, or both of those little kids, would become a statistic on some police accident report and forms in the future. Fortunately, not everyone is so reckless and negli22| Motorhead Magazine - July 2015
I work day, and night, trying to save young lives and trying to prevent serious injuries caused by vehicle crashes involving small kids with my own Award-Winning, Child Passenger Safety Mascot, BUCKLEUPALLOFUS. A great big blue dinosaur with a seat belt for a tail and a great big smile for the kids. This cartoon character for kids appears on many handout items passed out into grade schools by police officers and police departments trying to make a positive difference in their own communities all of the time. For the past decade, I have been donating thousands of Buckleupallofus Coloring Books, Coloring Posters, Coloring Calendars,

As we mentioned earlier, Brian Bell was responsible for the paint and bodywork, but Brian Khoury also mentioned that Bell handmade carbonfiber panels for the bedsides, tailgate, and nose clip and helped fit them to the chassis. For the upcoming 2015 season Dan Page Race cars is building superlite carbon fiber doors to replace the factory steel pair. Current weight on race day was 2930lbs and this was good for a best 1/8 mile pass of 5.19 @ 137mph and a best 1/4 mile pass of 8.17 @ 168mph. Average 60 foot times were all in the 1.18’s!! For the 2014 season Brian Khoury had a pretty impressive showing, including some big wins down south. I asked him to rattle off a few of his favorites and these were the highlights that came to mind… 1. 2. 3.

GOT BOOST?
Nick Boudreau’s X275 Mustang ED YESSAIAN
One of my favorite parts of writing about “Feature Cars” is seeing pictures of the car’s beginning stages. It never ceases to amaze me when I see a car like Nick Boudreau’s X275 Mustang and then see photos of a stripped down 4 cylinder LX Mustang that probably had no idea what its true fate would be. According to Nick, it all started in 2002 in his
grandparent’s garage, where he had a vision of a somewhat straightforward blown 306 build. The story begins with Nick and his good friend John Massoud tackling the cage install. They opted for an S&W 10 point cage, and as with all S&W products they were impressed with the fit, finish, and quality, as well as the end result. Once they were through with the cage they moved on to tackle the drivetrain. The original combo consisted of a 306ci engine, C4 transmission, and a YS blower but was later upgraded to a Powerglide that was assembled by 2014 Super Pro Champion Ray Knight, who happens to know a thing or two about Mustangs. This combination celebrated a successful couple of years before it finally went KABOOM, and Nick decided to try his hand at a Turbo build. It would have been pretty simple to use what he acquired and just bolt it all in and GO!!! But at the time, people were starting to put their turbo in facing forward, so that was 26| Motorhead Magazine - July 2015
the direction he took, cutting all his existing piping and fabricating his own set-up. In the process he upgraded the computer to an XFI FAST system and also decided to go with an air to liquid intercooler. Once everything was locked and loaded, Nick headed into the 8.50 bracket of New England Dragway’s Outlaw 10.50 program with great success. It was at this time that he realized that he was going to have to reevaluate certain parts of the car if he was to proceed any further. This is
where Jon Sandahl of Tube Chassis Designz (www.TubeChassisDesignz.com) stepped in. If you’re a regular reader of Motorhead, you have heard me mention Jon Sandahl plenty of times. He is a multiple time 8.50 Wild Street Champion and is singlehanded responsible for a HUGE percentage of the fastest cars around. Nick cut out the original 10 point cage and let master craftsman, Jon Sandahl sculpt a picture perfect 25-3 cage. The car spent one more season in the 8.50 bracket but then graduated to the Outlaw class that allowed you to run all out. Eventually, thanks to Marco Dias and New England Dragway management, X275 came to our track and that was when Nick knew that X275 was where he and his car belonged.
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
Through the years, the car stayed with generally the same set up, except for minor upgrades and refreshed components. The current powerplant is a 365ci engine with a mid-frame 85mm. A Mark Mickey Turbo 400, Pro Torque Converter, and Ford 9 inch rear end complete the package. One of the things that really impressed me about this car is that Nick tries to do as much of the work on it as he can. He’s collected all kinds of tools, parts, and equipment over the years and says that it not only comes in handy for maintaining his own car but also when he lends a hand to a friend or fellow racer. He was also quick to mention that he has had a lot of help along the way and wanted to thank Dennis MacPherson of DMC Racing, Eric Laferriere, Precision Engine, ABT Machine, Mark Mickey, Mom and Dad Beaudreau, Bill and Rosemary Boudreau, his loving fiance’ Debra Davol, Jameson Souza, Danny Reis, Marco Dias, Travis Johnson of Performance Auto and Dyno, Mark Maneiro, Mark Menscer, and Joe at Pro Torque Converters.

NOVA TIMELIN JOHNNY CONTI
Most of you have heard the repetitious “old days” stories regarding the fast street race cars of the 60s muscle era, that were often over-cammed and over carbureted, and were regarded as fun to drive. Most weren’t, unless you were 16 years old and didn’t care about any short term discomforts, like most of us back then. Most of these “fast” vehicles were at best high 11-second, 120 mph cars. READERS RIDES AUSTIN’S 1969 DODGE DART SWINGER
Written by ETCH Austin’s 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger is quite an amazing Mopar when you find out how rare it really is when compared to a lot of Mopar Muscle cruising around New England this cruisin’ season. Other than looking like a generic base model Dodge Dart, this READERS RIDES features a 340 engine equipped with solid lifters and a 4-Speed transmission shifts the gears on the blacktops across the region every summer. Austin Beliveau resides in Massachusetts with this sleeper Mopar that also features a basic orange paint job with Dodge dish caps that back in 1969 was not a real big deal considdrive to the area car shows and cruise nights. He will be showcasing this cool little bomb at this year’s Cars of Summer Cruise Event this coming 4th of July Weekend in Worcester, Massachusetts.
14” stock wheels with a 4” bolt pattern and front disc brakes help stop this Mopar on a dime. There are no cruisin’ comforts like air conditioning, power windows and power steering. Austin told me you just hold on and go straight! It is just a lot of fun to drive.
This 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger boasts some great components and features such as an original 340 engine that has had no work done to it and the transmission is all original as well. The 8 3/4 rear end features 410 gears and gets the job done every time it heads onto any street, or highway.
Austin said it took at least five years to restore his 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger to its current condition, but he expects to be doing more work to it to get this Mopar sleeper into the condition he wants in for more summers of cruisin’ New England in the years to come in the future.
ering the power plant vehicles being introduced to the consumer vehicle buyers after rolling off the assembly lines in Detroit that year. He doesn’t mind though. It is what he likes most about his classic car. Austin told me that because his classic car is a 4-Speed and does not have power steering that you really have to drive this Mopar on our roadways. No comfort zone with this “little bomb” of a car as he calls it. He also told me that he has owned his fair share of Chevy’s in his day but he has always been a Mopar Man at heart so now it’s what he prefers to

STEVE REIS MEMORIAL MUSTANG VS F-BODY SHOOTOUT
SPONSORED BY SOUTHERN NH UNDERCAR, VIKING MOTORSPORTS, AND PERFORMANCE DYNO ED YESSAIAN There are very few occasions in my life where I can say I have been completely overwhelmed by emotions. I have seen quite a bit of good and bad in my nearly 41 years and for the most part, I take life as it is dished out to me. But on Saturday morning, May 2nd, I can honestly say I did not expect to experience one of the most incredible and meaningful days of my life. To be allowed to run the first annual Steve Reis Memorial Mustang vs F-Body Shootout was simply and honor and a privilege and by the end of the day I felt extremely grateful for getting to spend an entire day with the people that loved Steve the most. I expected the day to be full of tears and from the minute the gates opened at New England Dragway, Steve’s friends, family, and fellow racers held each other tight, doing their best to honor him, while doing the one thing he loved most- RACING! The day started with the greatest tribute imaginable as Steve’s brother Danny Reis led Steve’s wife Jaclyn to the starting line in Steve’s Shelby GT500. There was not a dry eye in the house as Jaclyn
made her pass down the track to kick off the day. And after that run, the group took over, to do what Steve loved to do most- talking trash and squashing Camaros. The racers were split into 5 different indexes
34| Motorhead Magazine - July 2015
based on elapsed times (13.00, 12.00, 11.00, 10.00, 9.00) and there was also an open bracket class for those that either didn’t fit the indexes or wished to run a second class after the indexes. Everyone was on top of their game, in an attempt to bring home one of the “Steve Reis Memorial Beer Mugs”
Marco Dias and I have always had a great friendship, with a little Mustang vs Camaro bashing between us. Marco runs the X275 division at New England Dragway and was one of Steve Reis’ best friends. It was one of the highlights of the day to see him win the 13.00 index in a RENTED Camaro
but at the end of it all, only six racers stood proud as Jaclyn Reis presented the Trophy Mugs to the winners…
SS. Runner up Paul Gillard made an impressive showing leading up to the final round, but Marco was determined to bring home the Memorial Mug.

The OUTLAW GTO is almost out of site from the lone police vehicle in high pursuit, but that officer is pushing his car very hard in an attempt to catch the fleeing hot rodder behind the wheel of that classic muscle car.
“He is going too fast in that high performance muscle car,” said another pursuing police officer, in response to the first officer’s statement.
Suddenly, a front tire blows out and the police vehicle slams hard to the blacktop on the right side. The car nose digs into the pavement and the police car starts to summersault through the air sideways, head over heal, and bursts into flames mid air with an exploding fireball and dark smoke.

Snow, more snow, and then more snow, surrounds our homes, businesses, work locations and vehicles and I am sick of it! I am snow blind and more than likely, so are you by now. What can we do it about it? That’s right, nothing. We cannot do anything about the weather in the slightest way. We can only hope that Mother Nature spares us from more than we can handle this winter and that our spring will be milder and sunnier with very little rain this year. Too many years in the recent past, we all have been dealing with rainy and cold weather until we are almost into summer season. I cannot count how many car shows and cruise nights that were rained out due to non-stop cool air and rainy days all spring season long over the past few years. Attending the first nice weather car show and cruise night in mid, to late, June. Please, not this year! I will happily trade a late winter season of being snow blind if it means that we all get to begin attending car shows and cruise nights rain free for an entire season. I know everyone says, “April showers, bring may flowers”, but raining all the time is not conducive to anything I care about during the spring season. I want to go cruising and attend all kinds of car shows and cruise nights when the weather is mild and dry before it turns hot and muggy. Lately, the years have gone from rainy and cool spring seasons into the hot and muggy summer seasons without much of a transition for us classic car and truck, muscle cars and hot rods enthusiasts to enjoy both seasons equally.

RI Street Rodding: Automotive Extravaganza JACK WOODMANSEE The Rhode Island Street Rodding Association held its 26th annual Automotive Extravaganza in memory of Frank Susi on Memorial Day, May 25th 2015. The spectator attendance was excellent. Cruisin Bruce Palmer showcased his best music, the food was delicious, and the weather was perfect, warm and without rain. The show is held at the Johnston Memorial Park which is a perfect setting for this show. There is plenty of room with the “best” parking places filling rapidly. There was a large contingency of great sounding Mustangs. Also noteworthy was a 1969 yellow 540 BBC Camaro with a hellacious reverberation that drew every-one’s focus. Mopar enthusiasts were well represented in addition to many stock vehicles, hot rods, rat rods, customs, drag cars, and specialty vehicles. Great paint seemed to be everywhere. A mid 60’s Olds had a candy apple red that was stunning. Blowers certainly held themselves high above hood ornaments throughout the show. To view a sample of participants, go to ristreetrodding.org, then the home tab, then to RISRA Photo-Videos 2015. The coach’s choice and 75 pick trophies were announced at the closing ceremonies. The trophies are chosen by twenty members of the RISRA which results in quite a variety. The differing views and tastes of members allow everyone a chance for a trophy. There were trophies given to an Alfa-Romeo through to a Z 28, truly the gamut from A to Z. A very nice fifty-fifty was also held by the ladies of the club and one Attleboro driver went home with a fatter wallet! RISRA’s President Dave Lombari said that the first Automotive Extravaganza was held for the West Warwick girls’ basketball team as they wanted to raise funds to play in Ireland. That show was such a huge success that RISRA decided to continue the show with the Johnston Little League being the recipient for the event. Dave also remarked this was an enjoyable event because of the large turnout and that the funds were being used locally for a great cause. Lombari also mentioned that exhibitors said they enjoyed coming to this show because all of the staff was so friendly either when you entered, throughout the day answering questions or giving a gracious goodbye when
and throughout the two month baseball season. He related that this benefit is the mainstay of his organization. There was a large sign denoting contributions from other sources including Providence Auto Body. Also during the closing ceremonies a special announcement thanking Providence Auto Body for their significant donation to the little league was made. The monies that have been received from this yearly benefit allows for the purchase of uniforms, equipment and other needs for three teams. The teams are determined by the age of the youngsters. Bob, who I must note had his 1974 Corvette Stingray at the show,
quickly quipped that they are consistently in the district finals almost every year, good luck this year! Cruisin Bruce has supplied the music and his DJ talents for this event for of the last fifteen years. Bruce’s children have been involved in little league and he has become a staunch supporter. He commented that this show had a great diversification that he doesn’t see in most of his other shows and noted that there were a large number of hot rods in attendance. Bruce gave kudos to RISRA for their supervision of the show. Adding up all entrants, RISRA member’s cars and late arriving classics; there were close to 350 vehicles, whose owners were able to enjoy the event and contribute to a worthy cause. Since all cars are welcome, join us May 30th 2016 and catch all the fun!
they left the premises. A salacious encounter from a lull in the Johnston Little League food concession gazebo allowed an interview with Bob Giudici who administrates the Johnston Little League. He noted that the sale of the food was only possible because the coaches and volunteers generously gave their time now 42| Motorhead Magazine - July 2015

The most challenging task that we are trying to put FRIDGES FRIDGES FRIDGES off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. starting starting starting starting starting startingat at at at at at There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. When Motorhead owner Lou Cicerone told me to try and find a feature car that is a little different than my usual contributions, it took me a while to think of one car that was like nothing I have ever written about before. MILITARY MUSCLE SERIES #2
JOHN LEHOUILLIER’S ROUSHCHARGED 2013 MUSTANG GT
ED YESSAIAN One of the greatest things about the New England Mustang community is that no matter who you meet, they usually become a good friend. Occasionally some people come and go, but there’s always a select few that you know will be lifelong friends. That’s pretty much how it went about three years ago when I first met John Lehouillier and his girlfriend Stephanie at the NH Mustang Club Cruise night in Hooksett, NH. At the time, John and I were the only 2013 Mustang GT’s in the house. Mine was bone-stock, but his had custom blue metallic graphics and a few bolt-on modifications. Needless to say his car got a bit more attention than mine, but that didn’t really matter once I found out that he not only drives the daylights out of it but also races it, quite frequently, both on the drag strip and the road course. In the beginning stages, John was temporarily satisfied with the car’s stock performance of 12.7 in the quarter mile. But as the go-fast bug bit, he quickly decided that it was time for forced induction. By Spring of 2014, a Roush TVS 2300 Supercharger found its way under the hood, along with all of the supporting modifications that pushed the output up to an astounding 526 rear wheel horsepower and 398 ft/lbs of torque. This was good for an improved elapsed time of 12.4 but was being held back by the factory rev limiter. John then switched the rear end out to a 3.31 ratio plus upgraded the clutch and driveshaft, which resulted in a huge jump up to 11.8 @ 119 in the quarter mile. In 2015 the car had a couple minor tweaks before it was dropped off in Loudon, NH at Performance Dyno. Mustang Mastermind Pete Johnson perfecting the setup and ended up with 560rwhp and 495 ft/lbs of torque. This propelled John to a new best of 11.40 @ 125mph on a set of Hoosier Quick Time Pro tires, that were of course suggested by yours truly, Ed Yessaian. If John’s accomplishments on the track weren’t impressive enough, his military career that began in 1989, is simply incredible. I asked John to sum

In April of 2008 while patroling the Thames River I was dispatched to respond to a person who had fallen out of his kayak and was being swept down river with the outgoing tide. My partner and I responded from Groton to Gales Ferry and I was able to pull the man from the river within minutes of arrival. He was suffering from severe hypothermia. I received a commendation for saving his life. Later that year I was promoted to Lieutenant and moved to NH to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Patrol Supervisor. Highlights for this time were I had the most drug arrests in the Region for Military Bases. At the conclusion of John’s interview, I was not only impressed, but pretty proud to call him one of my best friends. After multiple tours and multiple injuries it amazes me how laid back and friendly he is. He is one of those friends that will do anything for you. Then again he will NEVER let you win at the track, but besides that, John Lehouillier is one hell of a friend and one hell of an American!!

READERS RIDES HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS 1957 CHEVY BELAIR
Written by ETCH His name is Freddy Caira lll and his cherished ride is the 1957 Chevy 210 Belair he built after watching the very popular car guy movie, Hollywood Nights. Freddy resides in Northbridge, Massachusetts. He and his brother Wayne founded and started TWIN SIN RACING TEAM. TSRT is well known across the region of New England at Epping’s New England Drag Way located in New Hampshire and at area car shows and cruise nights. Both brothers drag race regularly at this drag way in their Chevy’s. Freddy in his ‘57 Chevy featured in this article and Wayne in his ‘67 Camaro featured in a previous article called, Lucifer’s Wild Ride. The 1957 Chevy features a Big Block 454 ci engine, a tunnel ram manifold hosting two Holley 650 double pump carbs and all MSD ignition system. The ‘57 Chevy required custom built fender well headers fabricated by Freddy and his bother Wayne. To keep this bad boy Chevy cool on those hot days at the drag way and car shows a Griffin triple core aluminum radiator was installed with a 16” electric fan forcing air through the coolant system to help keep that big block running cooler than 200 degrees. We know what happens to these power plant motors when they run too hot and everything should be done to make sure that those problems don’t sideline your car at the race track, or on the road. An In-Gear Tranny was installed with a 3200 stall converter that sits between the big block 454 engine and custom built 12 bolt rear end removed from a Chevy Pick Up Truck. The rear end features a full spool set up with 4:10 gears and all Moser components and axles. The front end suspension is stock factory with a disc brake conversion to help stop the beast on a dime and give back change. The rear suspension features ladder bars with coil over shocks heavy duty shocks. Other than the custom bucket seats with Simpson Racing Seatbelts the Chevy’s interior is stock factory with a B&M Shifter and plenty of Autometer Gauges installed by Freddy. He thanks his dad, Alfred Caira Jr. for all of the body work and paint work done to the 1957 Chevy completed at TSR Compound located in Northbridge, Massa-
chusetts. Freddy chose to paint his hot rod Chevy a Dodge Viper Yellow to compliment all of the car’s chrome and polished aluminum. SS Cragar Wheels give this hot rod that “Old School” look and appeal.
When Freddy isn’t driving trucks across the Worcester and Metro West area of Massachusetts at his full time trucking job he is turning wrenches in the garage and turning heads at the drag way,
Freddy is 34 years old and it has been his lifetime dream to build the replica 1957 Chevy, Project X from the movie, Hollywood Nights. Twenty years after watching that movie his dream became a reality with the finished hot rod parked in his driveway ready to hit the roadways headed to an area car show, or cruise night. This is definitely not a trailer queen hot rod. This car is driven! This 4000 pound Heavy Chevy boasts pulls at the drag way of consistent 12.5 seconds numbers at over 100 miles per hour. Not too bad for a daily driver during the summer season. Freddy was influenced by his brother Wayne to drag race his 1957 Chevy like he does with his own 1967 Chevy Camaro. TWIN SIN RACING TEAM was born the first time Freddy tore up the drag way in his Hollywood Nights replica 1957 Chevy Belair.
or on the road headed to another car show, or cruise night. Freddy, his brother Wayne and his dad Alfred Jr. are a family of drag racers and hot rod enthusiasts from Massachusetts and all had a hand in the Hollywood Nights replica 1957 Chevy 210 Belair project build. Some could call it a family affair, but I think genetics and motor oil instead of blood running through their veins has a lot to do with this family’s love of fast cars and drag racing. When they first coined the phrase “Buckle Up!” I think they had these three diehard hot rod enthusiasts in mind and for a good reason. When you see this gorgeous 1957 Chevy pass by you on the open highway just wave and gesture a “hi” because the next thing you will be thinking of are the words, “Buh Bye!” because that car’s taillights are all you will be seeing until it disappears ahead of you headed to destination’s unknown.

MARINE GPS and TRACKING
GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center
PART 1 GPS units are essential equipment on today’s boats. Units range from inexpensive handhelds to full blown chart plotters. Many GPS units have built in mapping or accept digital maps to help the user navigate. Boaters can choose from a simple handheld unit or choose a fixed mount unit.
Both types have advantages and disadvantages. Many boaters keep a hand held unit for safety even if they also use a fixed unit. One nice feature for many handhelds is a special cradle with a power cable for use when under way. Configuring your GPS is important in order to navigate accurately. Among the parameters to be chosen are map datum, navigational units, data output and the unit’s course format. Each of these elements should be understood and set before using the unit to navigate. Map datum refers to the original process that the paper chart was designed with. In order to compare a GPS position to a paper chart, both the GPS unit and the chart must use the same datum. WGS84 is the most common datum in use among American boaters. NAD83, the other common da-
tum is virtually the same. International charts use a variety of datums so mariners are advised to always check navigational charts and configure the GPS unit accordingly. Navigational units can usually be set to miles per hour, or knots. Since water is measured in nautical miles, it is preferred to set GPS units of measure to nautical miles and knots. It is also relevant to remember that your paper chart typically displays units in nautical miles. A degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles, and a minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile. Knots are important as 1 knot = 1 nautical mile. Another setting to choose is course up or North up. This will make the plotter display the chart or grid always with the course oriented in front or always in a North up orientation. GPS units can store the near exact location of a given point of reference. Modern GPS units often come with a wide range of waypoints pre-programmed. In addition, the user can also store, name and recall custom waypoints. This allows boaters and fishermen to store and maintain lists of fishing hotspots, navigational marks and other important locations. GPS units also store routes and plotting history so the mariner can call up a pre-programmed path to follow or review a vessel’s earlier path. Waypoints, routes and track data can all be downloaded, stored, edited and uploaded back to the GPS via the users computer or other device. This can be a vital feature that allows the user to save important data. Data from one GPS can also be shared or cloned to another unit. All these features allow users to easily manage a vast amount of information effectively. GPS units can be a great navigational tool when used properly, although GPS units should never be relied on as a primary means of navigation. A fundamental understanding of basic navigation is vital to successful operation of these indispensable tools.

past months of February and March, but is it a given to keep it year round? Unleaded ethanol is extremely hydroscopic and will absorb water just from vapor within the air. Because ethanol will mix with any water inside of gasoline and cause a separation meaning that one portion of your fuel will be gasoline and the other an ethanol and water mix. This separation can cause issues in starting, idling, running, power, and could potentially damage internal engine parts by reducing lubrication. For gasoline that may be stored for a few month’s time you may want to make sure that you purchase an airtight container and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent water absorption. Lastly, the thing you should be scanning for is lubrication products. Oxidation can occur in all oils that are in contact with air, including stored lubricants. The base oil and additive combination will affect the rate of oxidation and the presence of thickener in the grease can increase the degradation rate. Increasing the temperature by which the lubricant is stored can double this oxidation rate as well, hence why there are temperature guides on the sides on grease tubs. To be on the safe side, the maximum recommended storage time for lithium greases and lubricating oils is a year, while calcium complex greases are weighed in at a steady six months. Check the manufactures’ labels on your products for more specifics. With this knowledge in mind, we hope this makes it easier for you Motorheads to determine what products you can actually keep until you get your rides ready for the spring!
