CRUISIN’

INDEPENDENCE DAY RELIABILITY AT GREAT PRICES

JIM WEICHERDING What happens when we eventually lose our Cruisin’ Independence Day in the not-so-distant future? Welcome the 2015 Corvette Z06, available in any configuration you may want. When we read in the newspapers, magazines and Want to buy the hottest Corvette in convertible form with an automatic transmission, no problem, Chevy offers it. The new was developed hear it on the radio, or 8-speed watchautoit tansmission on the nightly in-house, and according to GM, shifts faster than the highly touted Porsche PDK newscast: transmission. Classic cars and trucks manufactured in and prior to 1976 are now banned from road use If you are a track enthusiast, GM has you covered with Z07 performance option package. This gives you 15” monobloc calipers and ceramic rotors, cutting 23 lbs across America. of unsprung weight. Aero changes include front winglets and an adjustable rear spoiler. This package generates more downforce than any car GM has ever produced.

Don’t think it will ever happen? Think again.

One of the days these classic vehicles and our rights and freedoms will come to end Proudly across this Serving country. Already in other Kenthappening County, Washington County, countries & Providence right now. I receive emails and IM messages from across the globe about my book, 401 OUTLAW RUN, 823 8113 Main Street and my ongoing series, OUTLAW RUN1343 Beyond West Warwick, RI The Book featured in MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE, valleyfuelwarwickoil.com THE LEGEND MAGAZINE, GEARHEAD MAGAZINE For more than 20 years, Rhode Islanders have made Valley Fuel and and coming soon to CAR GUY NATION TV SHOW, Warwick Oil their only source for fuel oil. Join our long list of satisfied REV’N TV CHANNEL and HORSEPOWER FOR AN customers, and we’ll deliver the reliability and affordability you seek. HOUR RADIO SHOW syndicated nationwide and worldwide in 179 Same-Day Fuel Oilcountries. Delivery for Home Heating Oil

OUTLAW RUN The Book and Beyond The Book Series is any car guy, or car gal nightmare in the written word. The book and ongoing series storyline is scary as hell to any automotive enthusiast across the USA and worldwide. It can really happen and we all know it. Look at what happened recently with the EPA trying to pass a new law banning street vehicles from racing at drag ways across the country and trying to stop drag racing aftermarket parts manufacturers and distributors from producing and selling drag racing equipment to the public that would allow us to build our street cars and trucks specifically for drag racing. Sure they backed off and the law was not passed by congress... yet! I know that the EPA is only pulling back in order to regroup and find a way to piggy-back a similar law with an environmental law that would ban street cars and trucks from being driven on drag ways and stop the manufacturing and sales of aftermarket drag racing equipment and upgrade parts to the public. It is inevitable and thinking that just because this previous attempt to pass that law failed to go to congress and become a law is short sighted and does nothing to ease my mind about what they can try next to take away our automotive rights and freedoms down the road. OUTLAW RUN is a preview of what will happen, not what may happen. For an example: The new Burrillville power plant they want to build in my community. The RI State Senate killed a bill that would allow residents of Rhode Island to vote

visit us at www.getmotorhead.com | 21

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

on whether-or-not we wanted to have a new power plant in our state. We have no vote! We were also told that if the Bill was passed that the governor would veto that Bill and again, we lose our right to choose whether-or-not we want a new power plant in our community. Don’t kid yourself, we are just pawns in the game of life when it comes to greed, power and the haves verses the havenots. Electric vehicles, wind-up vehicles and even Nerf vehicles are in our future at the rate things are going for automotive enthusiasts across the USA. This Independence Day make sure that you take your classic ride, or big block show vehicle out for a nice long ride. Attend a classic car show and cruise night without giving it a second thought. Why? Because there is no guarantee that we will be allowed to do it again on the next 4th of July holiday. Drive it to a 4th of July parade, or to watch the fireworks shows across the region while you still can. There is a reason why automotive magazines, radio shows, tv shows and networks nationwide and worldwide are picking up the OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series and featuring rave book reviews for OUTLAW RUN The Book. The unique and original storyline premise hits hard and tells it like it is with

an entertainment value never before addressed by any author, writer, movie producer, video game developer and publisher anywhere. I hope for all of our sakes that OUTLAW RUN remains a fictional book and the ongoing series remains entertainment value only and not a preview of what is to come making a non-fiction story for automotive enthusiasts everywhere. Feedback from around the world suggests otherwise and that scares me. I am a Muscle Car enthusiast and love

my big block show truck. If this all goes away I will quickly become one of my written characters and challenge any law that removes my automotive rights and freedoms to drive anything I own on roadways across America. Like a quote from the OUTLAW RUN book and series: “They Gotta Catch my Muscle Car, to Scrap my Muscle Car!” Have a Safe and Happy 4th of July and go Cruisin’!

Steve Reis Memorial Mustang vs F-Body Shootout Sunday August 7th at New England Dragway

ED YESSAIAN Steve Reis was a great man. He was a hard worker, a loving husband, and a great father. And through all his responsibilities he always seemed to have a positive and influential attitude. One characteristic that stands out, reflecting back on the short time that I knew him, was the fact that in addition

to working hard, he liked to play hard as well. Steve’s playground of choice was New England Dragway in Epping, NH where he spent quite a bit of his leisure time slapping Camaros with his Shelby GT500. He may have also slapped around a couple close friends and Steve was always quick to remind you that that couldn’t keep up. It was this type of playful banter that made him who he was. He may have whipped your ass on the track,

but he would also be the first to lend a helping hand if you needed it. After the untimely passing of Steve Reis last January, the group wanted to come up with a way to never, ever forget him. It wasn’t hard to figure out that his memory should somehow be intertwined with Mustangs and Drag Racing, and so it was born- The Steve Reis Memorial Mustang vs F-Body Shootout!! This year on Sunday August 7th, 2016, friends, family, and racers from all over New England will join together once again to do what Steve did best- race cars, talk smack, and enjoy the company of all our friends and family! The Shootout will consist of 5 individual indexes, broken down by elapsed times of 9.00, 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, and 13.00. These indexes will run on Outlaw 10.50 rules including a .400 Pro Tree. Index classes are for MUSTANG AND F-BODY CARS ONLY. There will also be a bracket class for any vehicle that does not fit into the indexes or is not a Mustang or F-Body. Bracket class will run on a full tree. Cost to enter this event is the current New England Dragway Test Session Fee. There is no additional cost after that. Racers and guests may also make donations in any amount to the Aubrey Reis College Fund, to help us prepare Steve’s daughter for her future educational expenses. Come on out, enjoy the day, and see if you can take down one of last year’s 2015 Steve Reis Memorial Defending Champs… 9.00- Scott Erickson- MUSTANG 10.00- Gregg Boudreau- MUSTANG 11.00- Wade West- CAMARO 12.00- Bob Barger- MUSTANG 13.00- Marco Dias- CAMARO Bracket Class- Ed Miller- MUSTANG

New Wave Performance Transmissions DAVE McCLAIN In 1999, I started modifying my 1996 Pontiac Trans AM. During that performance era the 4L60E was the most common automatic transmission of its time. The 4L60E was an electronically controlled 700R4. It had 4 forward gears with an electronically controlled lock up torque converter. The transmission was rated at 360 foot pounds of torque. The 4L60E was geared for quick acceleration with a nice 3.06 1st gear, 1.62 2nd gear, 1.00 3rd gear, and a .70 4th gear designed for better fuel economy. This transmission in an F-Body or Corvette was a pretty lethal combination with a proper high stall torque converter, performance camshaft, and deep rear end gears. Built properly, an automatic C5 Corvette can achieve consistent sub 11.5 quarter mile times with a relatively mild camshaft and remain perfectly drivable. As good as the 4L60E was during this era, unfortunately it has become obsolete! GM has created a new wave of 6 & 8 speed automatics to replace the old 4L60E. In 2006, GM began production of the new 6L80. This transmission has been beefed up to handle 439 foot pounds of torque. Any drag racer would love the new gear spacing. 4.03 1st gear, 2.36 2nd, 1.53 3rd, 1.15 4th, .85 5th, and .67 6th gear for enhanced fuel economy. This transmission gives you awesome acceleration on heavy vehicles and keeps the motor in the optimum power band.

Torque Converter

6L90 Cars and trucks equipped with transmission never seem to have a dead spot like the old 4L60E. My 2010 Camaro SS is equipped with this amazingly strong transmission and is still going strong over 66,000 miles on it. My car is a little above average power wise compared to a stock application. Proper transmission tuning is the key to handling additional torque of a supercharged car. Most tuners turn off torque management and it probably wouldn’t be long before you will need a rebuild. I would definitely give up a few tenths at the drag strip to save a transmission. GM has already upped their offering with a new 8L90 in the New Corvette ZO6 and

12| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

a few other vehicles. I also hear their might be a 10 speed auto coming soon. As of right now the 8L90 can handle over 635 foot pounds of torque. I can only imagine how one of these newer transmissions would perform with a mild torque converter, performance camshaft, and gears.

8L90 Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. We offer Custom Cams, Ported Cylinder Heads, Supercharger & Turbocharger installation packages for GM LSX powered vehicles. We specialize in GM tuning with EFILive tuning software. If you want your ride independently tested give us a call at 401996-2166.

BOys of S

JIM WEICHERDING When the weather is warmer and the sunshine seems to never end you can be sure of one thing; The BOYS OF SUMMER are out and about in their classic cars and trucks and showcasing them at car shows and cruise nights across the region. There isn’t a day that goes by during the summer months, weather permitting, that you won’t see these classic and showcase vehicles driving on our roadways enjoying the cruisin’ season. The best part of seeing these beautiful rides when I am out working for MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and distributing the issues at area car shows and cruise nights to our loyal readers and fans is the variety of rides and the colors that their owners choose to be a part of their vehicles scheme and overall finished look. Granted, some of these classic vehicles and showcase vehicles are purchased the way they are shown at car shows, but there are many of us, (I am building a 1969 Pontiac GTO based upon my book and magazine series, OUTLAW RUN), that restore and build their rides the way that they want and not the way the previous owner wanted that ride to appear and sound on the roadways and showcased at car venues. Some of the photos featured on this page show the classic rides I see frequent14| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

ly at area car shows and cruise nights and some photos are from the very first time I ever laid eyes on them. The classic red pick up truck and the slick black hot rod are first time showcases but the yellow truck I see at area car shows and cruise nights regularly. I own the black Chevy truck and use that vehicle to display my traffic safety billboard at car shows and cruise nights to remind kids and families to wear seatbelts and drive safely. Putting the cartoon character behind the wheel of a 1954 Chevy Convertible painted Chevy Orange just seems to work and gets a lot of attention at these venues all through the car show season. MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE is available at many of these car show and cruise night venues and the BOYS OF SUMMER can’t seem to get enough of the issues I pass out every single month. The magazine cover is flipped open to the pages inside before the reader is even five feet away form picking one up at the tailgate on my truck. More often than not, these same individuals come back for more copies of the issue because the one that they were reading when walking away from my truck were confiscated by someone else who came to the car show and cruise night with them. When the host car show and cruise night DJ announces again, and again on their loud speakers that I am on site with more copies of MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and Coloring Books for the kids, the line builds and the spectators flock to my truck before the copies are all gone for that particular event. The BOYS OF SUMMER are a great bunch of car guys who are always on site at any given day, and at any given car related show and venue with their own

then you are probably just like the rest of us BOYS OF SUMMER crowd and we welcome you onboard the ride. Remember to buckle up and cruise safely and I will be seeing you at an area car show and cruise night soon, until the end of the season is upon us.

1969 JAGUAR XKE

16| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

JIM “ETCH” WEICHERDING I heard this vehicle approaching long before I ever put eyes on it at a Saturday Night Car Show held in Pomfret, Connecticut. I was standing next to my show truck when I saw this impressive 1969 Jaguar XKE turn off the main road and enter the car show. The ground began to tremble with every foot it travelled closer to the bunch of us standing at the entrance to the popular Tri-State Cruisers Saturday Cruise Night. That evening, more than two hundred show vehicles attended the venue because it was a very nice day and the weather was perfect for a summer time cruise to destinations anywhere across the region.

Pro-Street Funny Cars do you see in your lifetime? Well, here is one that is truly an awesome ride and should be appreciated by anyone who loves classic cars and trucks. When Bike Mike came over to my show truck on display to ask for a copy of MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE we started a conversation about his cool classic Jaguar and now here it is featured in this months issue of the magazine. He told me that his classic 1969 Jaguar XKE was packing a punch with the 406 SBC Performance Motor with roller rockers, roller cam, roller crank, Manley Heads and a 750 Holley carburetor. This rare Jaguar also features a TH350 Tranny built with a B&M Super Hole Shot Torque Converter and a B&M Pro-Shifter.

There were more than two show vehicles but this one stood out from the rest. And I mean stood out.

The rear tires are 33” tall by 21.5” wide for fantastic road gripping power.

Spectators and show vehicle owners alike walked right over to this gorgeous ride as soon as Bike Mike backed into a parking spot right next to my truck. You couldn’t ignore it. It was too loud and had a presence about it. It caught everyone’s ears, then their eyes and then their interest.

The 1969 Jaguar XKE also features a full roll cage and a custom tube chassis that helps keep the vehicle weight down to a light 2000 lbs for incredible wheelies and light ‘em up capabilities at any speed and in any gear.

Seriously, how many 1969 Jaguar XKE

So if you happen to see Bike Mike cruising in his 1969 Jaguar XKE Pro-Street Funny Car down the highway, or on the other back roads of New England make sure you look fast because chances are you won’t be seeing it for very long within your range of vision. This car is explosive and quick on the draw. Personally, I hope to be seeing more of this rare classic street pounder at more car shows and cruise nights across the region this summer. Yah gotta love it!

MUSTANGS VS COR

Two Local Car Clubs Face Off in a Modern Day Showdown ED YESSAIAN When the Bay State Corvette Club and Mustangs of Massachusetts sent out the invite on social media, for their first annual Corvettes vs Mustang Day, I immediately marked it down as a “MUST ATTEND” on my calendar. I am obviously a huge Mustang fan, but there is no denying the appeal of a nice clean Corvette, especially this latest generation which reincarnated the iconic “Stingray” nameplate. Advertised as a Bracket race and a ‘Show and Shine”, the event invited those that wanted to race, of course, but also those that just wanted to enjoy the day and take in some friendly competition on the dragstrip. The folks at New England Dragway even opened up the show field to present reserved parking for the show cars, which allowed members of both clubs to socialize and get to know each other. The “Show and Shine” section of the event had roughly 20 cars, a good mix of both Corvettes and Mustangs. But out on the track was where the real action took place!! Right off the bat, the Corvettes outnumbered the Mustangs 9 to 3, which actually impressed me as far as seeing guys in BRAND NEW Corvettes letting loose and enjoying 22| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

Throughout the rounds, an absolutely immaculate Inferno Orange Corvette Grand Sport would be the fastest competitor of the day, ripping off low 10 second elapsed times. A pair of twin C7 Z06’s also tore down the track, making some very

In the Mustang camp, US Marine badass John Lehoullier looked to be the man to beat, running 11.40 on an 11.40 dial back to back. But we would never crown a Champion, because as the bracket racing proceeded, Mother Nature, unfortunately,

While we may never know which of the historic American Muscle cars would have reigned supreme, we were informed by both clubs that this event would be back next year. JOHN COTA’S 1981 “SILVER BULLET” By Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio It was nothing short of thoughts of a smoke show when formally meeting John and his gorgeous 1981 silver Pontiac Trans Am. The car had been sitting for an astonishing 10 years in a garage before he had come across it. His acquaintance Dan from Herb’s Towing was the previous owner, and was happy to show John what would be his pride and joy to come. This gorgeous machine was turn-key, but it was mostly stock with a basic 350 and factory 4 speed set up. After seeing this beauty John had to inquire about it and decided ultimately that he had to have it. Bored .030 over, equipped with AFR aluminum heads, roller rockers, a three core radiator, and an Edelbrock 650 CFM Thunderseries carburetor, this newly built 355 is putting down some real power. When he lets his clutch out in first 26| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

gear, the engine roars through a set of JEGS headers mated into a pair of twin Flowmasters. You can certainly tell when he’s cruising down the road with a roar! After having the engine built by R. Johnson and Sons in Warwick, Rhode Island, Mr. Cota decided that he would need the exterior to match the wild spirit of the motor. On the hood of the silver Trans Am sits a gorgeous phoenix mural. While these are very popular among late second gen birds, there are typically black birds on silver or white cars or yellow phoenixes on the black or blue vehicles. John made the unique decision to display the orange phoenix on his silver hood, making it eye catching as well as a screaming demon to announce to his show worthy competition. 2016 has been quite the good year for John, as he proudly displays his first trophy with the car taken from a local car show where he was the only

Pontiac standing amongst the scenery of many classic cars. Not only does he proudly display the enthusiasm of the Pontiac badge, but his wife and daughter are also partnering as a team in giving John the drive behind building his dream vehicle. While he may spend countless hours making sure that his ride is in tip-top shape, he definitely will make it worth his while appearing in multiple shows throughout this year and onward. With nothing short of its history, John understands that he does indeed hold a rare gem and plans to keep making changes to his delectable bird in due time, and like the phoenix, this “Silver Bullet does ring true for that of the rise of its future endeavors.

The police officers are watching as Etch turns on his left directional, looks into his side view mirror and waves out the driver’s side window. Etch mats the gas pedal and the GTO launches from its stopped position. The front tires lift off the ground to the echoing sound of the dual exhaust and then screaming rear tires. seal, so that water cannot get in. They should be secure enough that you could hose them down and it would not damage them.

A Custom Car Stereo Center

There is nothing quite as enjoying as cranking up the tunes on your marine stereo system while out cruising on your boat. But the higher quality the sound is the better you will enjoy it. Here are some great tips for shopping for marine waterproof speakers. Marine stereos allow you to enjoy your music regardless of the conditions. However, a marine stereo system will not be complete if there are no waterproof speakers. The marine speakers work to deliver the sound waves clearly and distinctly from the surrounding roars of sea waves, currents, and wind gusts. The enjoyment of listening to music on the water is made possible and enhanced by the quality of the speakers. Without them, all you can hear are blurry murmurs and vague voices. The point is, what’s the worth of spending money on a costly marine stereo when you do not pair it with an efficient speaker, right? The biggest problem with choosing Speakers for your boat is the environment. Salt, moisture, waves can quickly take its tole on a regular car stereo. In fact, with such a choice you would be wasting your money. You need marine electronics for such a touch job. Marine Speakers are easy to soot because they are rated as such. Once you have purchased the right equipment you will need to make sure it is properly installed to ensure you get the best sound possible. I have installed plenty of Marine Stereos and Speakers in my career as an installer of such equipment.

There are several models of waterproof speakers from that are worth checking out. When choosing a pair of Marine Speakers, several factors to consider are their designs and the models for flush mounting and also those that are in box forms. Both of them are skillfully designed not only to please the ear but also to be captivating to the eye. Thus, you can expect them to add additional character on your deck or cockpit. The colors are also elegant to look at and suitable for any outdoor environment. Also, they posses superb ability to resist rust and corrosion because they are made of high-quality weather resistant materials. Remember, choose your location for installation wisely. Although they are labeled “waterproof” you cannot expect them to survive being completely submerged under water or having huge splashes soak them. Place them in somewhat protected location and arrange them in a direction that is directed toward your ears. Waterproof auto speakers have paper cones, steel grilles and wires that are exposed making it a poor choice for the water. That is why you need to buy waterproof equipment specifically for marine, because you will want plasticote on the circuits so that they are protected from the moisture and will not corrode. You will want waterproof covers that

Now that you’ve got your new marine speakers installed, sit back and enjoy your favorite tunes!

SLIDE-N-GO

The Only Restrictor Plate System You’ll Ever Need ED YESSAIAN It was sometime towards the end of the 2015 racing season that I first heard of the Slide-N-Go re-

plates are CNC machined to exact tolerances from 304 stainless steel, creating corrosion proof components that should outlive the actual car itself. Installation is simple and there are infinite num-

strictor plate system from Christopher Moretti. Moretti runs a 1968 Camaro in the Outlaw 10.50 series, so he is quite familiar with the index racing world. With his extensive resume of racing accomplishments, he knew what he was looking to do as far as designing a system that would literally take the guess work out of setting up the car for each individual event. The Slide-N-Go is virtually foolproof! Whether you’re running 1/8 or ¼ mile indexes it allows simple adjustments in less than 30 seconds. Moretti told me that he wanted a system specifically designed “by racers, for racers” and he extensively tested it before he passed it on to people he considers to be his friends and family. The system works with both 4150 and 4500 style carburetors and is made in the USA to the strictest of standards. The base of the Slide-NGo, which houses the interchangeable plates, is machined from 6061 aluminum. The individual 42| Motorhead Magazine - July 2016

event and introduced me to a handful of happy and SUCCESSFUL users of the system, each with a wide variety of cars, engines, and carburetors, to show the unbelievable versatility of the product. Here are just a few guys that are singing the praises of the Slide-N-Go… Chris Moretti- 1968 Chevolet Camaro- 565ci Big Block Chevy engine, Dominator 1050 carburetor. Moretti is responsible for the extensive testing and introduction of the Slide-N-Go system. Craig Rice- 1969 Chevrolet Nova- Rad Machine 434 Small Block Chevy, 1000cfm Dale Cubic car-

buretor. Rice showed up for only one race in the 2015 season and walked away with the #1 qualifier points and the WIN. In 2016 he has again only attended one event so far but again walked away with the WIN at the CMDR race. Keith Rice- 1984 Monte Carlo SS- 434ci Small Block Chevy. In his first race with a Slide-N-Go, Rice went to the final round of competition after grabbing #1 qualifier for that same race. Ron Pomerleau- 1972 Chevrolet Vega GT- 383ci stroker small block Chevy. 1050 Dominator carburetor. When I asked Ron Pomerleau about his experience with the Slide-NGo, all he could say was, “it works, no doubt about it, it works”. With 4 wins (including Fast Street’s season opener), 2 Runner up finishes, and three #1 qualifier awards, Pomerleau may have already clinched the Fast Street Championship.

race he should be dialed in and set to kill. Ed Yessaian- 1994 Mustang GT Convertible- Ray Knight 331ci small block Ford engine, Nickerson carburetor. Set to debut in September of 2016, Yessaian is looking to step up to the Fast Street segment of Outlaw 10.50. With Super Pro racers Brian Khoury and Dan Christopher helping him dial it in, he is hoping to add to the impressive resume of the Slide-N-Go team! For more information or to purchase your own Slide-N-Go system contact Christopher Moretti- cmoretti7268@gmail.com

Norm Sirois- 1981 AMC Spirit- AMC 390ci engine, Speed Demon 850 Double Pumper carburetor. Norm walked into the Real Street index and from day one this season has been unstoppable. In just three races he has 2 wins, one runner up, and two #1 qualifier awards. Norm currently leads the Real Street segment by a long shot. Kyle Cimbron- 1970 AMC Hornet- AMC 401ci engine, Quickfuel Q850 carburetor. Cimbron made his first appearance on June 11th and instantly went a couple rounds, with a new car, new setup, and of course a SlideN-Go. By the next Outlaw

Drive-In Memories

JIM WEICHERDING On June 6th, 1933, the very first outdoor movie was shown in Camden, New Jersey. Eager and excited movie goers parked their vehicles for the first ever drive in theater called Park-In Theaters. Park-In Theaters was the concept of New Jersey resident, Richard Hollingshead. He was a movie buff and sales manager for his father’s business, Whiz Auto Product, located in Camden, New Jersey. Richard was inspired by his mom’s discomfort to stay seated in traditional movie theaters

hood of his car after securing white sheets to the trees and placing a radio behind the makeshift screen for the sound. He also searched for ways to protect the projector and screen from rain and bad weather conditions. He also created a great way to space all of the vehicles in an arrangement that would allow all of the patrons to easily view the movie in comfort without stretching their necks to watch the movies. The young entrepreneur also applied and received a patent for his concept in May of 1933 and opened the very first Park-In Theaters, Inc. within a month of receiving that patent. His initial investment was $30,000 and advertised his venues as entertainment for the entire family. Hollingshead charged just twenty-five cents per car and twenty-five cents per person with nobody paying more than a dollar to watch the feature movie. The concept was well received and Hollingshead patent was overturned in 1949. After that, Drive-In Theaters started popping up all over the country. The largest one in the east coast was the All-Weather Drive-In located Copiague, New York. The drive-in was located on a 28-acre lot that had parking spaces for 2,500 cars and trucks, a kids playground and a full service restaurant. It was a perfect and inexpensive form of entertainment for couples who wanted time alone and families who wanted to enjoy a movie on the weekend.

for long periods of time and thought that the comfort of our automobiles would be a great alternative to that cramped in seating arrangement that the big movie house offered its patrons on the weekends. Later, the name Park-In Theaters would be termed, “Drive-In Theaters” Hollingshead came up with the idea of an open-air theater where patrons could watch the movies in the comfort of their own vehicles. He also experimented in his driveway at his own home with different projectors and sound systems. He was noted for mounting the projector, a 1928 Kodak Projector, on the

Drive-In Theaters showed mostly B-Movies that were not the Hollywood blockbusters shown on screens in big movie theater houses across the USA, but eventually even those outdoor theaters began showing Hollywood blockbusters because the viewing audience wanted to see their favorite actors and actresses on larger screens in a more comfortable environment like their own vehicles. Drive-In Theaters were extremely popular during World War ll and became a huge entertainment venues during the 1950’s and 1960’s with at least 5,000 Drive-In Theaters open nationwide. With the new improved screen and sound technology movie goers could enjoy the feature films with

their own window mounted speakers and eventually on their vehicle FM radios. Drive-Ins became the icon of American culture and a typical weekend destination get-away for couples who wanted their privacy and not just for parents and kids. Teens were mostly using the Drive-Ins as a way to be alone regardless of what was showing on the big screen on any particular weekend. Since then, the Drive-In Movies have diminished because of rising real estate prices in community suburban areas, the increased availability of big screen surround-sound movie houses with more comfortable seating, better accommodations and video stores allowing families to view movies in the comfort of their own homes. There are only approximately 500 Drive-In Theaters now showing movies across the USA that cater to kids, teens and families that want to get out of their homes on a nice summer evening and enjoy the movies on the big screen and fresh air

on the weekend. So, bundle up the kids and head to your local Drive-in Theater and bring back those memories of the Lost Drive-In Theater with your family and friends if you can. Grab yourself some popcorn, hot dogs and cold drinks and enjoy the movie!
