Swap and Go: Mansfield Car Meet
LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO
Jay Pjojian’s Immaculate SVT COBRA
Spring has finally sprung and the weather is finally starting to get hot and most of us have made the final preparation for our rides. However, most of these completions would not have left the garage without assorted car parts found at the Mansfield swap meet this May! Us Motorheads took the liberty of stepping it up to make the drive to Mansfield, Massachusetts to browse through several lots to glance at various specials vendors had that might bring something new to the table. There were some interesting vintage cars for sale, as well as smaller engine transportation such as mini bikes as low as three hundred dollars or go cart boats for five hundred. Antique signs were a plenty while old matchbox cars and chrome pieces from cars of years past were scattered on most tables. One of my favorites were the Hallmark car ornaments which boasted several Camaros, Corvettes, and Mustangs that you could easily hang on your Christmas tree. There was food available from the hot dog and hamburger truck, although most people were smart enough to bring their own portable grilles and coolers packed with drinks. The hot sun made it easy for us to get a light tan and

There’s really no other felling like taking delivery of your first Mustang or Muscle Car, especially when you’re in your early teenage years. The first time you lay eyes on that aggressive stance, the first smell of the leather interior, the first feeling of that rumble that happens after your first turn of the key. Every one of us can recall what seemed like the greatest day of our life when we got behind the wheel of our very own piece of American History. For Jason Pjojian of Cranston RI, that amazing sense of ownership and pride came to reality this past summer when he got his hands on his immaculate 1997 SVT COBRA.

Royal Flush: Pretty In Purple
Liana Moniz’s 1967 Camaro
LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO They say that specific colors in the color wheel can symbolize personalities or ambitions. It is pretty self evident that when spotted that Lisa Moniz’s 1967 Chevrolet Camaro combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. It brings true a shade of glimmering royalty, and is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic. In its gorgeous grace, this vehicle holds true a vision of excellence with years of contributed dedication to its completion and future plans of further restoration and beauty.
The car had been in an accident with the previous owner demolishing the front end through use of a barn. The car was originally purchased for the sum of two hundred dollars by her father Bob and the first repair to the vehicle was completely torching the front end off as the frame was stuffed into the wheels and had absolutely no turning radius. With twelve years to go due to antique insurance (you can only acquire antique insurance at the age of 25 and up in the state of Massachusetts) Mr. Moniz set a goal to his this car ready by the time his daughter had turned 25. With the help of friends Billy Caron, Charles Poland, and Roland Poland this project car was sure to hit the “Royal Flush” status of being pretty in purple. The door panels and convertible top were sent to Russ at Glynn Upholstery to be decked out in the cleanest white. The exterior metallic purple plaint would be mixed and applied by Hank from Napa in East Providence, Rhode Island. The driving essentials to make the car move
Having received the car at a mere thirteen years of age due to a joking manner with her father Bob Moniz of B and S Camaro in Swansea, Massachusetts who was trying to keep a buyer of the vehicle at bay, Liana knew that this car would be her ultimate “cruise dream” to bring to Newport on hot summer nights and select car shows. When the Camaro was first purchased, it sure didn’t look like much with a candid Butternut yellow paint job and a six cylinder powerglide.
would include a 350 engine with a 350 Turbo transmission laced with a shift kit would be mated together to complete the drive train. A 10 bolt rear with 336s would accommodate the backside with a rare factory fold down rear seat, vintage AM/FM radio, and the stopping power of power brakes with a power steering system. Lastly it would roll off on Rally Sport SS wheels and hold a true SS hood. In the month of May of 2015, this convertible was ready to move and shine! Owning the business B and S Camaro made it all that much easier for Mr. Bob Moniz to supply himself with the parts needed to finish his daughter’s royal creation and make her dream car up to her expectations of performing great and looking fantastic. Bob finds pride in finding his customers hard to find Chevrolet parts to complete their restorations and you may reach him at 508-6739402 most evenings after 5:00 p.m. It was certainly a pleasure to meet with Bob and get his insight on current restorations in his garage and learn about the qualities of older Chevrolets that not many people might know. We hope to see this gorgeous 1967 cruising at some local car shows throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island and receive the chance to greet Liana!

READERS RIDES ‘52 CHEVY SEDAN

England vehicle originally. This classic sedan arrived recently to Worcester, Massachusetts from the southern part of the state of Texas.
His name is Gary Cooper. He resides in Massachusetts. He is a Classic Chevy Sedan enthusiast and owner. This Readers Rides features his currently owned Chevy Sedan. It is his fourth Chevy Sedan purchased for the ultimate cruisin’ experience.
The Chevy Sedan has a very clean undercarriage and was one of the deciding factors when it came to purchasing this classic ride.
This fourth Chevy Sedan is turning out to be his favorite ride, although the other three were no slouches when it comes to driving these gorgeous classic vehicles across the roadways of New England during the summer time cruisin’ season. This 1952 Chevy Sedan features a six cylinder engine, 1968 Chevy Chevelle drivetrain and a four speed transmission. Gary said that the downside to this vehicle is that it only has a six cylinder engine, but the upside is that it also features a four speed with ice cold air during those hot summer days out on the roadways headed to car and trucks as well as cruise nights all over the region each year. One of his favorite cruise events is the Cars of Summer Cruise Event held each year during the Fourth of July Weekend at Green Hill Park located
in Worcester, Massachusetts. I can fully understand that reasoning because he is one of the hosts for this great kids and families cruise event, now in its third year. I enjoy this venue every summer and I know that you and your kids and grandkids will enjoy it just as much this summer. This beautiful, 1952 Chevy Sedan is not a New
Gary is a big fan of fender skirts and those will eventually be added to the vehicle in the not so distant future. Personally, I love fender skirts too, and this sedan will look very impressive cruisin’ along the roads, streets and highways this summer in New England. The sedan already looks impressive with the color scheme design and the Cars of Summer graphics featured on the panels. Panels are great

CHARITY CHALLENGE DRAG RACING ED YESSAIAN The evening before every ED DAY, I sit back and reminisce about all other ED DAY’s past. There are so many great memories, that it is almost impossible to pinpoint my one greatest ED DAY memory. In 2009 we featured the “Project Fallen Hero” Shootout to raise money to rebuild the Mustang of Fallen soldier, Major Jeffrey Calero. In 2011 ED DAY served as the wedding venue for Carolyn and John Preston, who requested my services as Justice of the Peace, to marry them on the drag strip. ED DAY 2012 featured the grand finale of “Project Fallen Hero” and the finished 1988 Mustang GT was presented to the family of Jeffrey Calero. ED DAY 2014 welcomed in the next generation of racers, as we added Junior Dragsters to the festivities and Chantel Gaboriault wasted no time in capturing the first ever Charity Challenge Junior Dragster award. And then we made it to the present day, ED DAY 2015, where we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the event. It was at this year’s event that I realized that I have truly made some amazing friends over the last ten years. The racing bracket featured 55 cars from all aspects of my life- friends, family, regular racers, daily drivers, and weekend warriors. And on top of that we had an additional 12 Junior dragsters. As the day concluded, the coveted ED DAY awards were presented to a handful of lucky winners. These are your 2015 ED DAY Charity Challenge Drag Racing winners… Best Average Reaction Time- Sponsored by Viking Motorsports Brandon Karaguezian pulled double duty, bouncing between a Junior Dragster and his Street Eliminator Malibu. With his near perfect reaction times of .001, there were very few that had a chance to dethrone him in this category. Lisa Whittemore ran a .004 and .002 as an impressive runner-up but couldn’t beat Brandon’s .001. Brandon sent his 250.00 prize to Alzheimer’s Disease Research. Charity Challenge Fastest Elapsed TimeSponsored by Performance Dyno We featured a story about Brian K Milward in the April 2014 issue of Motorhead (Big Papa’s Fight) and within the article showcased his impressive collection of cars. The main attraction of his collection was a sinister little Fox-Body Mustang that at ED DAY 2015 managing to rip off the fastest pass of the day- 8.91 @ 154mph. Olivia would pull a slightly better light and run an 8.09 on a 7.99 dial, to advance to the finals against Cam Murray, who had the BYE. Olivia would have the better light but Cam Murray would steal the stripe with an 8.13 on an 8.16 dial. Cam sent his 250.00 prize to the Tough Warrior Princesses. Charity Challenge WINNER- Sponsored by TASCA Automotive Group Jeremy Young finished his 2014 season with a string of victories in both Street Eliminator and True Street 12.50, so it was only fitting that he kicked of his 2015 season opener with another win. Jeremy donated his 1000.00 prize to Parkinson’s Disease and INDY AUTO PARTS kicked in an additional 100.00 donation in Jeremy’s honor.

E85 - Affordable Race Fuel? DAVE McCLAIN What’s the deal with E85? I hear all the time that local racers are interested in running E85. As of right now, I don’t even know if there is a gas station in Rhode Island that sells E85. The buzz among racers is they are planning a switch to E85 and ditch race gas. E85 is running on average around $2.00-2.20 per gallon. E10 is running close to $3.00 per gallon for 93 Octane. Pure race gas varies on its prices, but usually is around $10+ per gallon or more depends on the fuel’s specific attributes. If based just on cost alone, E85 looks like a
winner, but roughly requires about 30% more fuel just to run correctly. For those of you how don’t know, E85 is a mix of 85% ethyl alcohol and 15% gasoline, which is produced by distilling corn, barely, or wheat. Most of us are running E10 in our daily rides. So, what are some of the benefits of running E85? Environmentally speaking, E85 reduces carbon
dioxide emissions significantly which helps the environment. Another key positive of E85 is a significant increase in the octane rating of the fuel, E85 is reported to be approximately 105 octane. Now, you can see why local racers are so interested in converting their cars to run E85. E85 is also produced here in the USA. This will help reduce our dependency on foreign oil for traditional gasoline. Hopefully providing good paying jobs to Americans. Another good benefit is that the ethanol helps reduce combustion temperatures significantly, which provides free Horsepower. It also cleanses the entire fuel system and combustion chambers. So are there any drawbacks? If you bought a flex fuel vehicle in the past few years, you can just fill up with any blend of ethanol based fuel and your car’s computer will automatically adjust to the amount of ethanol in your fuel. If you have an older vehicle that isn’t designed to run on ethanol, it can get quite expensive to make the swap, especially if you are modifying it to produce a lot of horsepower. The fuel system must be modified to eliminate any bare magnesium, aluminum, and rubber parts. The fuel pump must be designed to work with electrically conductive ethanol. The pump must flow approximately 30% more fuel and will require bigger injectors to compensate for the additional fuel that is required by E85 compared to traditional gasoline. Extremely high horsepower cars might require multiple fuel pumps and larger fuel lines.
E85 tuning is very similar to pump gas at part throttle conditions, but at full throttle you will be able to add some additional timing due to the higher octane rating, cooler combustion temperatures and faster burn rate compared to gasoline. With gasoline, a naturally aspirated peak horsepower is between AFR is between 12.4-12.8 to 1 Air Fuel Ratio. On E85 it is closer to 8.4 to 1. Boosted cars have been tuned close to this ratio with great success due to the lower combustion chamber temperatures produced when running E85. Tuning in lambda makes things a little easier, make sure your wideband is adjusted to E85 stoichiometric ratio of 9.765. Most are set up for pump gas of 14.7. A word of caution, E85 might not always be 85 percent ethanol especially at your local gas station. So keep this in mind when tuning. During the winter time you might be getting only E70, due to the fact it is harder to start a car on ethanol in extremely cold conditions. The added parentage of gas allows for better starting. Unless you buy E85 form a race gas supplier in a sealed can, your level of ethanol content may change. Modern Flex Fuel vehicles are equipped with an ethanol content sensor to adjust fueling and timing. As you can see, E85 is an ideal substitute for race fuel when tuned properly. Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. We offer Custom Cams, Ported Cylinder Heads, Supercharger & Turbocharger installation packages for GM LSX powered vehicles. We specialize in GM tuning with EFILive tuning software. If you want your ride independently tested give us a call at 401-996-2166.

The 2015 Corvette Z06 Dave Messere
For 2015, Gm has released the new Corvette Z06, the high-performance variant of the new for 2014 Corvette Stingray. The big news here is the 650hp supercharged LT4 engine, a small block engine with 6.2 liters of displacement. With 650 ft/lbs of torque, This Vette has more grunt than a Ferrari F12 or a Lamborghini Aventador, both 12 cylinder supercars costing several times more.
The first Z06, appearing on the 1963 Stingray, combined a 36 gallon gas tank with heavy duty brakes and suspension in a package to support owners who wanted to race their cars and circumvent GM’s ban of motorsport racing at that time. The Z06 was brought back for the 2001 model year as a track focused car available with a hard top and manual transmission only....until now!

Brian and Karri’s Silverado is like no race car you have ever seen. Even from a distance, the smooth as glass finish done by Brian Bell will tell you how meticulous they were in building it. The actual build began in 2000 and is constantly evolving and getting faster. Obviously, none of us can truly say our cars are “done. The heart of this monster started with a Dart Block and is a Scott Shafiroff conventional head, short deck 598ci masterpiece. Al Staffieri ported and flowed an Edelbrock 632 intake and a set of Brodix 380 heads. Final Compression ratio is 16:1. The transmission was put together by everyone’s tranny guy Ted Mazzotta

ED DAY 2015
CHARITY CHALLENGE CAR SHOW SPONSORED BY STONEHAM MOTOR COMPANY
ED YESSAIAN It was the summer of 2006 when the very first ED DAY AWARD was handed to lucky recipient Steve Harvey for the “Fastest Pass at ED DAY”. Steve’s pass was a 10.02 ET that was actually run with a blown head gasket. This first set of awards was handmade, on a home printer and then put inside plastic frames from the Dollar Store. ED DAY 2006 was truly a low-budget operation. Fast forward to 2015, an entire decade later, and ED DAY 2015 featured professional trophies, 8 second passes, and a catered lunch from Burton’s Grille. It was truly, a spectacular evolution that will hopefully continue to get better. In 2006, there was only a mere 7 ED DAY awards, but during the 10th Anniversary celebration, dozens of these much sought after awards were handed out. Only a select few carried away the special 10th Anniversary edition ED DAY Awards, and here they are… Pre-1979 Mustang- George Martin 1979-1993 Mustang- Kris Amato 1994- 2004 Mustang- Heather Miller 2005-2009 Mustang- Ryan McJuary 2010- Present Mustang- Anthony Imperato SVT COBRA 93-04- Michael Travers Specialty Mustang- Matt Osbourne Bullitt, Boss, Mach 1 Mustang- Chris Raffaelo Shelby Mustang- Jay Raposa Top Truck- Ansel Grose Corvette- Paul Kalinoski GM Muscle- Peter Fritschy Mopar Muscle- Joe Fournier ED DAY APPRECIATION AWARD- Burton’s Grille The Curse of ED (Best carnage)- Jay Tresider ED’S CHOICE- Jimmy Mirras BEST OF SHOW- Paul Breault

READERS RIDES Two-Tone ‘65 “GTO”
Written by “ETCH” This Readers Rides features an original two-tone, 1965 Pontiac GTO. It is owned by Rick and Pat Leduc of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. When I first saw this gorgeous 1965 Pontiac GTO parked in Rick’s garage, it needed the chrome rear bumper and rear taillights installed. I went there with my buddy Dennis, who crawled under the trunk area of this classic muscle car and carefully bolted on the rear bumper and rear taillights. I even assisted with the bumper alignment before
leaving a cloud of smoke in your wake as you launched your “Goat” down an unlit back road in the middle of nowhere at about 2am on a hot summer night with your girlfriend screaming at you to slow the hell down! Ah, the good ‘ole days. The rear end packs a punch with 3:55 gears and a Limited-Slip for that initial fishtail until the gears lock up and the car heads straight down the road with both rear tires baking on the black top. You remember when you could hit the gas pedal and bake your rear tires right? Unless you still own a classic muscle car and still know what it is like to mat your gas pedal and unleash some horsepower. This doesn’t apply to Prius and Caravan owners. Even though I did often see a Caravan traveling through my town with two racing stripes on the hood and rear drop down panel. What that kid was thinking when he painted those stripes on his mom’s Caravan is beyond my thought process. Frankly, I think it is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen, and I see a lot of stupid things!
it was permanently tightened up and secured with a few turns of the wrench. The GTO sports a rare two-tone color scheme that came factory on only a few models of this year Pontiac. The body features a Fontaine Blue paint scheme while the roof features a Night Watch Blue which is the darkest of the two blue paints. The engine is a factory 389 Tri-Power motor and came original in this classic car. Rick’s Pontiac GTO also features an original Muncie 4-speed transmission with a Hurst Shifter. This brings back memories of some of the GTO’s I once owned and drove all over the New England area way back when. Nothing like gripping onto a Hurst Shifter and ripping through all four gears 22| Motorhead Magazine - June 2015
Another unique feature on this original 1965 GTO are its stock factory rims and spinner hub caps. How often do you see that? Also grips the black top with Red Line Coker Tires, 205 - 75 -14’s. Looks great on this body style Pontiac. The interior is an original GTO black interior that is completely flawless. No cracks, holes or tears anywhere inside this “Goat”.
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
The 389 Tri-Power engine is rated at 360 HP’s and the exhaust is a stock factory set up with 2.5” diameter pipes leading to the dual chrome tips that drop down behind the rear tires. The dual exhaust rumbles when you turn the key and it sounds very impressive and respectable by any standards.
Also impressive is the original mileage on this bad boy Pontiac GTO. Only 81,438 miles on a classic muscle car that is now nearly fifty years old. The frame and undercarriage on this GTO is also spotless. Very clean classic muscle car from the undercarriage to the top of its roof. When Rick first purchased this GTO he didn’t even have a place to park it. He had to convince his wife Pat to knock down trees and remove half of her own garden in order to build an extension onto their existing garage that currently keeps his 1957 Chevy out of the elements. Now that’s sacrifice! But, you gotta have priorities and believe me, any GTO is a priority in my book! Get it? GTO? My Book? OUTLAW RUN? There yah go! Lol! Lav’s Classic Car Restoration located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts was the frame-off restoration shop for this 1965 Pontiac GTO build. Dennis Lavallee, owner of Lav’s Auto, said more than 1000 shop hours went into the complete restoration and you would know that just by seeing this vehicle close up with your own eyes. This article photo series doesn’t do this classic muscle car GTO justice, but it still looks pretty good from where I am sitting. http://www.lavsauto.com Home of the “OUTLAW” GTO Project Build based upon my very popular book, OUTLAW RUN, now available in paperback online and at New England Car Shows & Cruise Nights all season long.

I was humbled by the fact that I was actually autographing a copy of my book, OUTLAW RUN, for a legendary and respected automotive builder such as Sonny Croughn. I admired his stuff featured in magazines since I was just a little kid. Most of my friends were spending their allowances on comic books while
I was spending mine on Hot Rod Magazine and similar automotive publications. Now, I write OUTLAW RUN Content, Special Features, Compelling Articles for these types of magazines and also create automotive artwork for these mags on a regular basis. I want to end this article by writing that it is an honor, and privilege, to call Sonny “my Friend and part of the Family”. Sonny and Sonja are such wonderful and down to earth people that truly care about the people that they come in contact with on their DARE 2B BAD Showcase Tour. Sonny proves that with his endorsement of my TSATS Traffic Safety Campaign and the efforts they are taking to help me send these important messages to everyone in the NHRA and IHRA Drag Racing World. When you see drag cars, drag trucks and drag bikes racing down drag ways on your television, or at live events, do not be surprised if you see my TSATS Stickers displayed somewhere on that vehicle. You may even drive up and see a drag vehicle transport trailer with these same stickers reminding drivers and their passengers to DRIVE NOW... TEXT LATER and “BUCKLE UP!” That will be Sonny, Will, Jared and myself reaching out to you, along with all of those drag racers and teams to help remind you to “Drive Safe, Drive Serious!”

JIM WEICHERDING Where do I begin? I travel around New England to a lot of great car and truck shows throughout the cruisin’ season, but the one I am writing about in this article is a standout cruise night by all comparisons.
George Arakelian, Treasurer, Gina Sabitoni-Arakelian, a-k-a Mrs. Rhode Island Italia and Sergeant Of Arms, Anthony Ferranti are hoping that their cruise nights grow larger week, after week and everyone comes out to enjoy the great music and view all of the spectacular show cars, trucks,
The newly formed Johnston Street Machines puts on an excellent cruise night every Thursday at Denny’s Restaurant located in Johnston, Rhode Island. The address for this weekly Thursday Night Cruise Event is 1448 Hartford Avenue in the parking lot of the new Denny’s Restaurant. Entrance fee of only five dollars is used each week to help local charities throughout the entire car show season. June’s charitable cause is a great one and I can speak from experience. I have been creating cartoon safety coloring calendars, coloring books and coloring posters for kids and families at Hasbro Children’s Hospital Emergency Room, Patient’s Rooms and their Safety Events across the state since 2009. Johnston Street Machines is helping to raise money for the Kids and Families at Hasbro Children’s Hospital every Thursday Night, weather permitting. The 2015 North East Auto Show Put your windows down and cruise!!
Written by TRUCK GIRL
We all know Cruise nights are a great way to showcase your ride. I recently attended a Cruise Night at Twisted Pizza in Coventry, RI on Wednesday night. It had a good turnout despite the cooler temperatures for this time of year. I had a good time hanging out with friends, listening to music which was provided by Bruce Palmer aka Cruisin Bruce, and checking out everyone’s rides. It’s just the beginning of the cruising season and there are plenty of cruises and car shows to go to. This is the first year that Twisted Pizza is hosting cruise nights every Wednesday night at this location, for those who didn’t know it used to be hosted at the Denny’s in Coventry, but they could no longer host this event so it was moved here. Cruise nights are a great way to get your ride seen and to socialize with other local car enthusiasts. So let’s get out there and start cruising! You can find a list of local cruise nights on Bruce Palmers website http://www.cruisinbruce.com/CarShowCalendar.html Also look in our magazine for other great events!!!!

Spring Dyno Day NH Mustang Club Season Opener ED YESSAIAN There’s just no denying that this past winter was the worst one I have ever seen. The number of automotive gatherings was slim pickings. But no
matter what, I can always count on Pete Johnson at Performance Dyno to bring back that spring
time feeling, with his annual Dyno Day, which this year, came just in the knick of time. Spring Dyno day has always been my favorite unofficial “season opener” and it serves as a family reunion, of sorts, to catch up with all the people I might have temporarily lost touch with during the nearly 6 month “off-season” that
we car guys must endure every year here in New England. There is just nothing like the sights and sounds, and smells that are generated while hanging out and spinning the dyno.
The main attraction this year was Pete’s
new ride, a Competition Orange 2015 Mustang GT. It didn’t surprise me, as Pete and his brother always have the newest cars, immediately after they’re released so that they can conduct “research” which obviously results in Pete’s reputation as the area’s best tuner, hands down!!
fuel system, and supporting mods, Dan’s Droptop cranked out 660rwhp, which ended up being the MVP for the day. Another Dyno Day regular was Matt Osbourne, who somehow managed to bring in three cars from his collection, all of which were Supercharged SVT COBRA’S, but the most notable was his EXTREMELY rare Zinc Yellow Saleen Terminator. This car is just immaculate; there was not a single fingerprint or grain of sand anywhere in it or on it. There was actually a point in time where some believed that the Saleen Terminator was a unicorn car, it was either made up, or created by enthusiasts after the fact. But through careful research, Matt discovered that his car is in fact a Saleen production piece and is one of only eleven cars produced that year. In addition to the cars and trucks, many regular readers will also recall that I have some good friends at the Domino’s in Concord, NH, so it goes without saying that they definitely hook us up big time with food and drinks every dyno day. What could be better than pizza, horsepower and friends? Not much!! And lucky for me Pete at Performance Dyno now has 3 events per year- NH Mustang Club Dyno Day, Mustangs of Massachusetts Dyno Day, and of course the season’s grand finale Fall Dyno Day. As always, if you see me at a shop, show, or race introduce yourself, cause you never know when you’ll end up in Motorhead!!!
Another thing I really enjoy is walking around and seeing the completed projects that people took on all winter. It’s just great to watch their amazement at the return on investment they acquired as the dyno graph comes up on the big screen. This year, one significant improvement in numbers came to Dan Spector on his 2003 SVT Anniversary COBRA. With a new blower,

READERS RIDES Classic Cruisin’ Pick Up Truck
Written by “ETCH” Normally, I write Readers Rides about other individuals who own classic cars and trucks, but not this time. This time I am writing my Readers Rides about one of my own classic rides. My 1979 Chevy Pick Up Truck featured in this article is one of my classic trucks. I have always owned a pick up truck since I first received my driver’s license. In fact, I learned how to drive a standard vehicle while working as a teenager at the Sunset Apple Orchards located in Scituate, Rhode Island before I was even old enough to drive legally on the road. My boss came up to me one day and said that his regular truck driver was going to be out sick for the weekend and handed me the keys to the big truck and said, “Here Jim, go drive the truck around the apple orchard and pick up the baskets filled with the apples picked that day by the apple pickers. Try not to drive over anybody and don’t hit a tree if you can at all help it.” He turned and walked away. Long story short; I learned how to drive a stick shift in an apple orchard truck and never turned back. When I was old enough to drive I bought a truck. I bought a Camaro shortly after that, but I have always owned a truck. I love trucks! This particular classic truck is a 1979 Chevrolet, 4 x 4 and is much like a truck should be; rough ride and moves like a tank over a rocky terrain down the roadway but I love that about these old trucks. This Chevy comes equipped with a small block 350/350 engine and an automatic transmission. It has a jet black enamel paint job with clear coat and features entirely black interior with cloth seats and not a crack anywhere on the dashboard like you would probably see on older trucks manufactured in this decade. This truck also has a full line of gauges and a tachometer displayed on the dash above the stereo. A newer style stereo replaces the factory model radio and features big speakers crammed in behind the seat on both ends for that quality muffled sound coming through the back of the seat cushion. Not a lot of stereo speaker options in a classic truck of this era and I did not want to cut holes into my door panels for that stereo surround sound. The two and a quarter inch diameter dual exhaust pipes are connected to a set of headers that lead up to a pair of Thrush Mufflers that rumble at the turn of the ignition key. Gets real loud when you accelerate down the highway.
and overall look at car shows and cruise nights from classic car and truck enthusiasts alike and that is pretty much what any of us classic vehicle owner’s are going for when we drive these rides to venues surrounded by our peers.
The tires are Michelin 15 x 33’s and fit nicely onto chrome Corvette rims. These tires are all terrain and fortunately do not make tire noise traveling down the roadways across New England like most of the larger tires on big trucks make on the black top surfaces. The Chevy is almost entirely original looking accept for a high performance engine with some chrome add-ons and a quick shift 3-speed tranny build that easily spins all four tires when locked in four wheel drive. There is no lift-kit, yet, and the truck sits stock height from rear to front bumper. I intend on putting a lift-kit under this truck eventually, but that won’t be until sometime this spring, or summer. I get a lot of compliments on the truck’s condition 34| Motorhead Magazine - June 2015
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
Unlike most of the classic vehicle owner’s in this region however, if worse came to worse, I could jump into this classic Chevy truck after locking my four wheel drive hubs and take a spin around the town spinning doughnuts and kicking up a snow storm of my own on freshly fallen snow filled streets and parking lots. I would not ever do this with my GTO and I would not blame anyone else who didn’t want to take their cherished rides out on the road after a snow storm. I do love the option of doing that if I am so inclined and this classic Chevy truck offers me that option. I can take it to car shows during the warm weather seasons and take it for a spin during the snowy weather season and that gives me the best of both worlds. I guess that is one of the reasons why I love classic trucks so much. When the urge strikes me to go cruisin’ I don’t have to wait for the first warm day of spring to go do that. I can do it anytime of the year.

Snow, more snow, and then more snow, surrounds our homes, businesses, work locations and vehicles and I am sick of it! I am snow blind and more than likely, so are you by now. What can we do it about it? That’s right, nothing. We cannot do anything about the weather in the slightest way. We can only hope that Mother Nature spares us from more than we can handle this winter and that our spring will be milder and sunnier with very little rain this year. Too many years in the recent past, we all have been dealing with rainy and cold weather until we are almost into summer season. I cannot count how many car shows and cruise nights that were rained out due to non-stop cool air and rainy days all spring season long over the past few years. Attending the first nice weather car show and cruise night in mid, to late, June. Please, not this year! I will happily trade a late winter season of being snow blind if it means that we all get to begin attending car shows and cruise nights rain free for an entire season. I know everyone says, “April showers, bring may flowers”, but raining all the time is not conducive to anything I care about during the spring season. I want to go cruising and attend all kinds of car shows and cruise nights when the weather is mild and dry before it turns hot and muggy. Lately, the years have gone from rainy and cool spring seasons into the hot and muggy summer seasons without much of a transition for us classic car and truck, muscle cars and hot rods enthusiasts to enjoy both seasons equally.

Rhode Island: Summer Cruise Night Heaven JACK WOODMANSEE Have an empty evening? Fill it in with a local cruise night. For every night of the week there is at least one area cruise to attend. One easy method is to locate one near you is to consult
for you. Beware that inclement weather may force the event to be cancelled. There are DJs that have multiple cruise nights. CruisinBruce Palmer hosts a cruise almost every weekday night and one of them he has started
ular host is Richard George, DJ Carguy, Richard has at a cruise every night of the week except for Tuesday and Saturday. In a recent phone interview with Richard I asked him to give me an overall view of his start in cruise nights. He said that “My passion for music and cars really started when I was about 12 years old. In 1967, I bought my first muscle car, a GTO and have been hooked ever since. When I retired I decided to combine my love for music with my passion of classic cars. As a DJ for car events, I am presently completely booked for the season with 41 weekend car shows and 5 cruise nights per week.” Want to learn more? Visit; http://djcarguy.com/ While John Hodis doesn’t have a web site he does have has four cruise nights a week with a loyal following. Monday nights he can be found at Oak Harbor on Route 2 in Exeter. Wednesday; Billy Hills Road House Intersection of RT 138 and Interstate 95, Exit 3 in Richmond. Thursday; MBA Cruise at Misquamicut Beach, Westerly. Friday; The Pavilion Steakhouse & Banquets 15 Frontier Road, Ashaway. A note of interest is this cruise, on a warm holiday weekend, has attracted over 350 vehicles. While John seems to have no DJ abilities, he has a very successful cruise night schedule. John has multiple DJs including DeeJay Boom, DJ Fred and Brother Lou and the Wolf 102.3. Two other cruises in our area include, Cruise Night, Carousel at Crescent Park, Route 103A,
the Sunday Providence Journal “Cars” section. I will attempt to highlight some of the area cruises available for Rhode Island, if I miss your favorite please accept my apologies. Charlie B, and myself, as members of Rhode Island Street Rodding Association, host a free weekly cruise at the Cornerstone Pub on Route 3 in Exeter, starting at 5 PM every Tuesday. Gift certificates are given away every week with a total value of at least $80. A grand prize of a flat screen TV, drawn from tickets given throughout the summer and will be held in September, winner must be present. We have a “Cruiser of the Week Award” every Tuesday. Jordan provides the music for our gathering until dusk. Great food too! Most area cruises start at 5 PM and end at dusk, some have large parking areas with plenty of shade, most have some accommodations for food, maybe a 50/50 and some charge for admission with proceeds donated to a worthy cause. Details will differ from one cruise to another cruise, so check them all out and see which one is
to host for his 19th year! In a recent interview I asked him about his work. He basically replied that “I’ve always been a car fanatic and always will be. I hosted my first area event 26 years ago when a local club (the RI Sinners) called up during my radio show and asked me about hosting their up-coming show. I had gone from hosting a couple events a season to a schedule that now often tops 150 within one season. But first & foremost, I’ve always been a gearhead myself, with a current stable of 13 vehicles” Further information about Bruce may be found at; http:// cruisinbruce.com Another highly pop-

ONE CLASSY COUGAR
Mercury Cougars were first introduced in 1967 as Mercury’s Pony Car. The upscale version of the Ford Mustang. In production for 34 years (1967-2002) the Cougar is second to the Grand Marquis in longevity. This 1994 Mercury Cougar XR-7 10TH Anniversary Bostonian Edition is a rare find because it is all original; nothing has been changed on it except for the battery, which was replaced a few months ago. It has less than 10,000 original miles and is equipped with the optional 4.6L (281 cid) SOHC V8 and a 4 speed automatic transmission.
TJ Botelho’s 1000hp Honda S2000 This Cougar has the power to get you were you need to go. The paint is spotless in a light evergreen frost color and is fully loaded with leather/cloth power seats. The Mercury Cougar was a very popular car sold throughout New England. This Cougar was purchased at Tasca Lincoln Mercury in Seekonk, MA by its first owner; a 72 year old woman who only drove it back and forth to do basic errands. It was obtained at an estate sale by Roger who is now the second owner of this beautiful car. This Cougar has been meticulously maintained, garaged most of its life, and is in great shape.

When Motorhead owner Lou Cicerone told me to try and find a feature car that is a little different than my usual contributions, it took me a while to think of one car that was like nothing I have ever written about before. I turned to some social media outlets and put out the request for everyone to send me their Hot Rods, Race Cars, and Project Cars. And from the dozens of entries I received, there was nothing that stood out the way TJ Botelho’s bright green S2000 did. As many of you know, I’ve been into Mustangs for over 25 years and although I do appreciate all kinds of other Muscle Cars, I’ve never strayed from my “comfort zone”. But deep down inside there m is a small place in my heart for something that I will refer to as a “mistress”, one of the only things w that th h temporarily pulled me away from my love for Mustangs. It was a small, incredibly fun little car M that th h a very close friend of mine let me play with when I felt like it, the Honda S2000. However, the w S2000 I was used to, although extremely agile S2 S 2 and a an n peppy, was nothing like TJ Botelho’s 1000hp rocket ship. ro o Right off the bat, let me say that you don’t just R Ri i walk in and demand 1000hp. You need to build it w and a an n break it and start all over again until you get itt right. To make that kind of power, you need a

heavy duty brakes and suspension in a package to support owners who wanted to race their cars and circumvent GM’s ban of motorsport racing at that time. The Z06 was brought back for the 2001 model year as a track focused car available with a hard top and manual transmission only....until now! past months of February and March, but is it a given to keep it year round? Unleaded ethanol is extremely hydroscopic and will absorb water just from vapor within the air. Because ethanol will mix with any water inside of gasoline and cause a separation meaning that one portion of your fuel will be gasoline and the other an ethanol and water mix. This separation can cause issues in starting, idling, running, power, and could potentially damage internal engine parts by reducing lubrication. For gasoline that may be stored for a few month’s time you may want to make sure that you purchase an airtight container and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent water absorption. Lastly, the thing you should be scanning for is lubrication products. Oxidation can occur in all oils that are in contact with air, including stored lubricants. The base oil and additive combination will affect the rate of oxidation and the presence of thickener in the grease can increase the degradation rate. Increasing the temperature by which the lubricant is stored can double this oxidation rate as well, hence why there are temperature guides on the sides on grease tubs. To be on the safe side, the maximum recommended storage time for lithium greases and lubricating oils is a year, while calcium complex greases are weighed in at a steady six months. Check the manufactures’ labels on your products for more specifics. With this knowledge in mind, we hope this makes it easier for you Motorheads to determine what products you can actually keep until you get your rides ready for the spring!

MILITARY MUSCLE PATRICK PETOSKY’S BUILT AND BLOWN GT
ED YESSAIAN With everything that is going on in the world today, I truly believe that people need to appreciate and respect our law enforcement and military personnel a lot more than they actually do. Anytime I’m at a car show or cruise night, I try my best to thank the active and retired military men and women and I try to make an effort to inquire about their race cars or projects for an article in an upcoming issue. Most of these project cars were paid for with blood, sweat, and tears, literally, so it goes without saying that we should make a much greater attempt at recognizing and appreciating the Military MOTORHEADS that we meet during the season. One particular individual that I met last year at New England Dragway was Patrick Petosky. Not only did he possess a pretty solid racing history, but he also just completed a ten year career in the Army, as well. He spent most of his military career in Fort Campbell, KY but also served three tours, including one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. He is originally from Jackson, Michigan but Patrick and his gorgeous wife Kimberly now reside in Haverhill, MA. Before actually getting to know him, I was pretty impressed with his car, which is completely blacked out and just plain evil looking. This appearance is preceded by that familiar whine of a Vortech Supercharger, so lined up against him at the track I knew we were both going to have to run it all out. After a couple passes against each other, I needed to look further into exactly what propelled him from one end of the track to the other. His car started life as a normal, everyday 2002 Mustang GT. That didn’t last too long as eventually the stock 281ci engine was stuffed with a Kellogg forged crank, I-Beam rods, and Manley forged pistons. The stock cylinder heads were bolted back on, but are now accompanied by a Vortech V1 blower. Tuning chores were handled by Performance Dyno’s mastermind, Pete Johnson and resulted in 420rwhp and 411ft/lbs of necksnapping torque. The stock transmission was shortlived on that combination so Bob Plourde, who himself runs a wickedly fast GT500, stepped in to do some tranny work which resulted in a built and hardened 3650 transmission, that is now up
to the task of putting the power to the pavement. A Ford Racing Aluminum driveshaft spins from there to an 8.8 rear housing that is also built to take the abuse and includes Moser axles and FRPP 3.73 gears. One thing you definitely notice, during take-off, aside from the whine of the Vortech blower is the incredible exhaust note that Patrick’s car bellows out at full throttle. This glorious symphony is accomplished by a three piece orchestra that includes BBK long-tube headers, BBK catted midPipe, and Flowmaster 10 series mufflers. But this car is not all bark and no bite. It has thus far run a best of 12.1 @ 115mph and has an impressive 1.6
sixty-foot time thanks to a simple but effective suspension set-up that includes a tubular front suspension, tubular upper and lower rear control arms, and Koni shocks and struts hanging at each corner. As far as future modifications go, Patrick is planning on fine-tuning the suspension a bit more and adding am off-road mid-pipe at some point. With a few more minor tweaks he is hoping to break the 11 second barrier, which really shouldn’t be a problem during the 2105 season. As always, we salute you Patrick Petosky and we appreciate your contributions and sacrifices. GOD Bless America and Happy Fourth of July Motorheads!!

READERS RIDES DENNIS’ 1940 CHEVY COUPE HOT ROD
Written by Jim “ETCH” Weicherding His name is Dennis Lavallee. We have been friends for more than thirty years. This READERS RIDES is about a project built 1940 Chevy Coupe Hot Rod. This car, is “his” car. He built it his way and I think it is one of the coolest hot rods on the road across the region. You will read about just some of the parts and accessories in the section featured on this article page that went into this project built hot rod. Dennis resides with his very supportive wife in Burrillville, Rhode Island. Walking into his garage is like walking into a hot rod showroom with a variety of beautiful hot rods and muscle cars along with classic car and truck décor on the walls and shelves featuring items and photos that he collects at car shows and swap meets. We have spent time in this garage talking about hot rods and drinking cold beers and I see his passion is equal to my own for these classic vehicles and this car culture. Now you may look at his 1940 Chevy Coupe Hot Rod and say, “Wow, what a gorgeous hot rod!”, but if you only knew what went into the build: Cost, Planning, Design and Time. Time! Now that is the clincher that has me amazed above all else that goes into a build like this Classic 1940 Chevy Coupe build. How about more than one thousand hours of labor to build this hot rod? That’s right, one thousand hours!
While most people are sitting on their couches watching television, or playing video games, Dennis is in his garage until all hours of the night building these hot rods and muscle cars. And that is following a ten hour day of running around like a madman running his own auto body business. Now that is dedication and passion! After forty years of this type of professional work and dedication to perfection when he builds and restores his customer’s classic cars and trucks, as well as his own private classic vehicle builds and restorations, he is still passionate about this car culture. He doesn’t just talk about it, he lives it. His 1940 Chevy Coupe Hot Rod is absolutely astonishing from the chrome rims and engine detail, to the airbrushed eagles on the body panels and eagle design stitched into his headliner. The photo’s displayed on this page don’t do it any real justice. This is a Chevy Hot Rod that needs

to be seen up close to really be appreciated and chances are good that if you attend car shows and cruise nights in the region that you will happen upon this cool ride on display. You won’t miss Dennis either. He will more than likely be wearing a LAV’S CLASSIC CAR RESTORATION’S shop tee shirt featuring his 1940 Chevy Coupe Hot Rod, 1955 Chevy Hot Rod and his 1966 Chevy Corvette. I know this, because I designed his shop shirts for him. He and his shop crew still wear the original 1966 Corvette Artwork I created for Dennis’ tee shirts more than thirty years ago. He may also be wearing the new OUTLAW RUN Tee Shirts sometime this summer with the words, “OUTLAW” GTO Project Builder on the upper left crest section of his tee shirt. Still working on that artwork at this time, but ready very soon! So, when you see this 1940 Chevy Coupe Hot Rod at a car show, or a cruise night, or even as it passes your vehicle on the open highway, don’t just glance at it and think what a nice hot rod it is. Think about all the time and energy that went into building this classic hot rod and really appreciate it for what it is. It isn’t just steel, rubber and chrome. It is much more than that. It is somebody’s passion. It is Dennis’ passion.

ROCK THE BOAT!
GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR.
Custom Car Stereo Center
There is nothing quite as enjoying as cranking up the tunes on your marine stereo system while out cruising on your boat. But the higher quality the sound is the better you will enjoy it. Here are some great tips for shopping for marine waterproof
speakers. Marine stereos allow you to enjoy your music regardless of the conditions. However, a marine stereo system will not be complete if there are no waterproof speakers. The marine speakers work to deliver the sound waves clearly and distinctly
because they are rated as such. Once you have purchased the right equipment you will need to make sure it is properly installed to ensure you get the best sound possible. I have installed plenty of Marine Stereos and Speakers in my career as an installer of such equipment. Waterproof auto speakers have paper cones, steel grilles and wires that are exposed making it a poor choice for the water. That
is why you need to buy waterproof equipment specifically for marine, because you will want plasticote on the circuits so that they are protected from the moisture and will not corrode. You will want waterproof covers that seal, so that water cannot get in. They should be secure enough that you could hose them down and it would not damage them. There are several models of waterproof speakers from that are worth checking out. When choosing a pair of Marine Speakers, several factors to consider are their designs and the models for flush mounting and also those that are in box forms. Both of them are skillfully designed not only to please the ear but also to be captivating to the eye. Thus, you can expect them to add additional character on your deck or cockpit. The colors are also elegant to look at and suitable for any outdoor environment. Also, they posses superb ability to resist rust and corrosion because they are made of high-quality weather resistant materials.
from the surrounding roars of sea waves, currents, and wind gusts. The enjoyment of listening to music on the water is made possible and enhanced by the quality of the speakers. Without them, all you can hear are blurry murmurs and vague voices. The point is, what’s the worth of spending money on a costly marine stereo when you do not pair it with an efficient speaker, right? The biggest problem with choosing Speakers for your boat is the environment. Salt, moisture, waves can quickly take its toll on a regular car stereo. In fact, with such a choice you would be wasting your money. You need marine electronics for such a touch job. Marine Speakers are easy to soot
Remember, choose your location for installation wisely. Although they are labeled “waterproof” you cannot expect them to survive being completely submerged under water or having huge splashes soak them. Place them in somewhat protected location and arrange them in a direction that is directed toward your ears. Now that you’ve got your new marine speakers installed, sit back and enjoy your favorite tunes!
