ED DAY CAR SHOW

ED YESSAIAN When Ron Heath of New England Dragway proposed Sunday, April 17th as the official date for the 12th Annual ED DAY event, it’s almost like he looked into his crystal ball and chose the best day imaginable. With rain for weeks before and after the event, it’s hard to believe that it was clear, sunny, and 73 degrees for this particular year’s ED DAY extravaganza. Attendance in the Car Show portion has always been unpredictable with between 30-35 cars showing up but with this type of forecast projected well in advance, the car show portion of ED DAY celebrated its greatest attendance ever with 53 entrants. And as the official ED of ED DAY, I can honestly say I took the time to personally check out each and every car before presenting the awards. While I really wanted to give every single car there some type of recognition, these are chosen few who received a coveted ED DAY AWARD…

READERS RIDES

TWO-TONE ‘65 “GTO” JIM WEICHERDING

This Readers Rides features an original two-tone, 1965 Pontiac GTO. It is owned by Rick and Pat Leduc of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. When I first saw this gorgeous 1965 Pontiac GTO parked in Rick’s garage, it needed the chrome rear bumper and rear taillights installed. I went there with my buddy Dennis, who crawled under the trunk area of this classic muscle car and carefully bolted on the rear bumper and rear taillights. I even assisted with the bumper alignment before

it was permanently tightened up and secured with a few turns of the wrench. The GTO sports a rare two-tone color scheme that came factory on only a few models of this year Pontiac. The body features a Fontaine Blue paint scheme while the roof features a Night Watch Blue which is the darkest of the two blue paints. The engine is a factory 389 Tri-Power motor and came original in this classic car. Rick’s Pontiac GTO also features an original Muncie 4-speed transmission with a Hurst Shifter. This brings back memories of some of the GTO’s I once owned and drove all over the New England area way back when. Nothing like gripping onto a Hurst Shifter and ripping through all four gears leaving a cloud of smoke in your wake as you launched your “Goat” down an unlit back road in the middle of nowhere at about 2am on a hot summer night with your girlfriend screaming at you to slow the hell down! Ah, the good ‘ole days.

8| Motorhead Magazine - June 2016

The rear end packs a punch with 3:55 gears and a Limited-Slip for that initial fishtail until the gears lock up and the car heads straight down the road with both rear tires baking on the black top. You remember when you could hit the gas pedal and bake your rear tires right? Unless you still own a classic muscle car and still no what it is like to mat your gas pedal and unleash some horsepower. This doesn’t apply to Prius and Caravan owners. Even though I did often see a Caravan traveling through my town with two racing stripes on the hood and rear drop down panel. What that kid was thinking when he painted those stripes on his mom’s Caravan is beyond my thought process. Frankly, I think it is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen, and I see a lot of stupid things!

Another unique feature on this original 1965 GTO are its stock factory rims and spinner hub caps. How often do you see that? Also grips the black top with Red Line Coker Tires, 205 - 75 -14’s. Looks great on this body style Pontiac. The interior is an original GTO black interior that is completely flawless. No cracks, holes or tears anywhere inside this “Goat”. The 389 Tri-Power engine is rated at 360 HP’s and the exhaust is a stock factory set up with 2.5” diameter pipes leading to the dual chrome tips that drop down behind the rear tires. The dual exhaust rumbles when you turn the key and it sounds very impressive and respectable by any standards. Also impressive is the original mileage on this bad boy Pontiac GTO. Only 81,438 miles on a classic muscle car that is now nearly fifty years old. The frame and undercarriage on this GTO is also

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

spotless. Very clean classic muscle car from the undercarriage to the top of its roof.

When Rick first purchased this GTO he didn’t even

have a place to park it. He had to convince his wife Pat to knock down trees and remove half of her own garden in order to build an extension onto their existing garage that currently keeps his 1957 Chevy out of the elements. Now that’s sacrifice! But, you gotta have priorities and believe me, any GTO is a priority in my book! Get it? GTO? My Book? OUTLAW RUN? There yah go! Lol! Lav’s Classic Car Restoration located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts was the frame-off restoration shop for this 1965 Pontiac GTO build. Dennis Lavallee, owner of Lav’s Auto, said more than 1000 shop hours went into the complete restoration and you would know that just by seeing this vehicle close up with your own eyes. This article photo series doesn’t do this classic muscle car GTO justice, but it still looks pretty good from where I am sitting. http://www.lavsauto.com Home of the “OUTLAW” GTO Project Build based upon my very popular book, OUTLAW RUN, now available in paperback online and at New England Car Shows & Cruise Nights all season long.

A Car for the Ages JONATHAN “MOPAR MANIAC” BERNIER 1957 was a big year for Motorheads. With big wings and long sweeping bodylines, the 1957 Chevy Bel Air came available in two door, four door, hardtop, convertible, station wagon, straight 6 and V8 configurations. For the first time since 1935 Ford outsold Chevy. The Bel Air was beautiful, quick, available in any number of set ups, but it still didn’t sell as well as the Fords. The reason was simple, but unexpected: tires. The Chevy was the first car to come with tubeless tires and the public feared the new design wouldn’t be as reliable as the classic design. Decades later, the `57 Bel Air has come to be one of the single most sought after rides of all time. With its high tail wings, chrome trim, and white wall tires, it is considered to be one of the most attractive cars of all times. Not just a pretty sight, this beauty could be fitted with a mighty 283 cubic inch motor with a rated 283 horsepower. When equipped with the most potent engine, the ‘57 could launch from 0-60 in 9.9 seconds and could turn the quarter mile in just 17.5 seconds, quite a feat for the time. The car did so well on the track, in fact, that NASCAR banned it almost immediately from any officially sponsored races, reducing it to local tracks, both paved and dirt. With its high revving engine and nimble handling, it proved quite a threat on shorter tracks. Not to be constrained to the tracks, however, the durable ‘57 became extremely popular in demolition derbies in the 1960s. With its set back radiator, the Chevy was a hard con-

This resilient motor, coupled with a strong frame and the last of the double lined trunks, propelled the ‘57 Chevy to the end of most derbies, quickly making it a crowd favorite. For all of these reasons, and many more, the 1957 Chevy, in all of its configurations, has become a prized possession for many collectors around the world. Among modern Motorheads the ‘57 has become a favorite for factory restorations and high performance builds alike, making it one of the most versatile and most loved cars throughout the ages. Whether you have an original Blue Flame Six or a crate 502, if you drive a ‘57 Chevy, you can bet you’re turning heads and you’re riding in style.

Mike Crowley’s 2013 418CI LS3 DAVE McCLAIN Mike Crowley’s 2013 Camaro SS started life as an ordinary Automatic L99 Gen 5 Camaro. Mike has transformed the exterior with various ZL1 panels. He has the front fascia, lower side skirts, and rear spoiler. Maybe the ridiculously expensive hood will be next on his list. In addition to the new body panels, he installed a unique set of black chrome aftermarket wheels and a set of wider tires. Mike installed an aftermarket coil over suspension, giving his car a lowered look in addition to enhanced handling. Over the last few months, Mike and I discussed several modifications to his car that would fulfill his power goals. We started talking about a turbo system, but he really didn’t want to go the turbo route on this build. He loved how my Whipple powered Camaro SS drove, but the added expense of the supercharger system caused some hesitation. Ultimately, Mike decided on a 418 cubic inch stroker short block for his build. The increased bore to 4.08 and longer stroke of 6.125 forged rods yields a 418 cubic inch motor along with a forged stroker crankshaft. Mike installed a nice Competition Cams hydraulic roller cam. The cam specs are actually a little small for this motor, but Mike is looking for a drivable car. I picked out a grind from the Competition Cams catalog, which should yield us a 2500 rpm – 6500 rpm window of power when fully completed. The Pro Comp Cylinder heads and valve spring upgrade should work well with the 243/259 .625/.625 114+3 cam. We will start with the stock air box, stock 90 mm throttle body and original L99/LS3 Intake. Mike installed a set of Dynatech 1 7/8 headers and high flow catalytic converters borrowed from another friends’ NA build. We will show the real changes that actually make power and maybe some things that may not. Mike is also contemplating adding NOS in the future. What’s really cool about this build is that Mike is allowing us to build his car in stages. I’m going to be dyno testing from the beginning the original L99 motor and the new 418 LS3. This build eliminates DOD and VVT, which is really not necessary in a big cubic inch motor. Our goal is to see how much power we can get though a 6L80E automatic transmission. We are even going to start with the stock torque converter, even though we know we will have to install a higher performance stall converter. This camshaft is significantly bigger than the stock one. There are a ton of builds across the internet on manual transmission cars, but limited on automatic builds. Mike was able to completely remove and install

his motor and transmission in one weekend. Mike has been in the auto body business for years and is no stranger to building horsepower. I was able to get a base tune in the car and get it idling within an hour, but with the stock torque converter it is almost impossible to maintain a smooth 900 rpm idle. The converter was too tight and pulled the motor down to around 650 to 700 and idled really rough. No tuning can fix this issue, a stall converter is the cure, but once you are above 1000 rpm the motor is smooth running. Mike then sent the car out to have the factory mufflers welded to his catted x-pipe, after all he doesn’t want to have a car that has excessive exhaust drone at highway speeds. Once back at my shop, I started the tuning process with the new 418 LS3. The additional 42 cubic inches required more fuel everywhere, so I slowly added fuel and ramped

up the rpms until I was ready to do a few full throttle pulls. The end result with the factory air box, intake, and throttle body was 453HP / 422TQ. This motor produces a nice linear torque curve, over 400 ftlbs. from 3400 - 5900 rpm. The stock L99 VVT motor put down 344HP / 370TQ. This mild camshaft and new cylinder

head combination yielded 109HP / 52TQ more than stock. I noticed that the factory air box and intake are a major restriction with the bigger motor. Usually, a naturally aspirated motor will be able to ingest a full 101 KPA of air at wide open throttle. My EFILive scan tool was only reading 95-97 KPA. If you look at the factory air box you will see tuned intake silencers and baffling that probably are not a restriction on a stock application. In future articles we will be testing a new air intake system, 95 mm throttle body, Fast 102 Intake system, 102 mm throttle body, and hopefully a new Pro Torque 2400 -2600 rpm converter. We are looking for around for around 480HP when the whole test is complete. Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. We offer Custom Cams, Ported Cylinder Heads, Supercharger & Turbocharger installation packages for GM LSX powered vehicles. We specialize in GM tuning with EFILive tuning software. If you want your ride independently tested give us a call at 401-996-2166.

READERS RIDES

1957 Chevy Belair JIM WEICHERDING

READERS RIDES: 1957 CHEVY BELAIR His name is Freddy Caira lll and his cherished ride is the 1957 Chevy 210 Belair he built after watching the very popular car guy movie, Hollywood Nights.

from a Chevy Pick Up Truck. The rear end features a full spool set up with 4:10 gears and all Moser components and axles. The front end suspension is stock factory with a disc brake conversion to help stop the beast on a

from the movie, Hollywood Nights. Twenty years after watching that movie his dream became a reality with the finished hot rod parked in his driveway ready to hit the roadways headed to an area car show, or cruise night. This is definitely not a trailer queen hot rod. This car is driven! This 4000 pound Heavy Chevy boasts pulls at the drag way of consistent 12.5 seconds numbers at over 100 miles per hour. Not too bad for a daily driver during the summer season. Freddy was influenced by his brother Wayne to drag race his 1957 Chevy like he does with his own 1967 Chevy Camaro. TWIN SIN RACING TEAM was born the first time Freddy tore up the drag way in his Hollywood Nights replica 1957 Chevy Belair.

Freddy resides in Northbridge, Massachusetts. He and his brother Wayne founded and started TWIN SIN RACING TEAM. TSRT is well known across the region of New England at Epping’s New England Drag Way located in New Hampshire and at area car shows and cruise nights. Both brothers drag race regularly at this drag way in their Chevy’s. Freddy in his ‘57 Chevy featured in this article and Wayne in his ‘67 Camaro featured in a previous article called, Lucifer’s Wild Ride. The 1957 Chevy features a Big Block 454 ci engine, a tunnel ram manifold hosting two Holley 650 double pump carbs and all MSD ignition system. The ‘57 Chevy required custom built fender well headers fabricated by Freddy and his bother Wayne. To keep this bad boy Chevy cool on those hot days at the drag way and car shows a Griffin triple core aluminum radiator was installed with a 16” electric fan forcing air through the coolant system to help keep that big block running cooler than 200 degrees. We know what happens to these power plant motors when they run too hot and everything should be done to make sure that those problems don’t sideline your car at the race track, or on the road. An In-Gear Tranny was installed with a 3200 stall converter that sits between the big block 454 engine and custom built 12 bolt rear end removed

When Freddy isn’t driving trucks across the Worcester and Metro West area of Massachusetts at his full time trucking job he is turning wrenches in the garage and turning heads at the drag way, or on the road headed to another car show, or cruise night. dime and give back change. The rear suspension features ladder bars with coil over shocks heavy duty shocks. Other than the custom bucket seats with Simpson Racing Seatbelts the Chevy’s interior is stock factory with a B&M Shifter and plenty of Autometer Gauges installed by Freddy. He thanks his dad, Alfred Caira Jr. for all of the body work and paint work done to the 1957 Chevy completed at TSR Compound located in Northbridge, Massachusetts. Freddy chose to paint his hot rod Chevy a Dodge Viper Yellow to compliment all of the car’s chrome and polished aluminum. SS Cragar Wheels give this hot rod that “Old School” look and appeal. Freddy is 35 years old and it has been his lifetime dream to build the replica 1957 Chevy, Project X

Freddy, his brother Wayne and his dad Alfred Jr. are a family of drag racers and hot rod enthusiasts from Massachusetts and all had a hand in the Hollywood Nights replica 1957 Chevy 210 Belair project build. Some could call it a family affair, but I think genetics and motor oil instead of blood running through their veins has a lot to do with this family’s love of fast cars and drag racing. When they first coined the phrase “Buckle Up!” I think they had these three diehard hot rod enthusiasts in mind and for a good reason. When you see this gorgeous 1957 Chevy pass by you on the open highway just wave and gesture a “hi” because the next thing you will be thinking of are the words, “Buh Bye!” because that car’s taillights are all you will be seeing until it disappears ahead of you headed to destination’s unknown.

Chevy By Jerry Arruda I bought the truck in July of ’77 (a month before Elvis died) from Pierce Chevrolet in Pawtucket. Growing up in a farming community my entire family, except my dad, were farmers and I wanted something other than another car. I had a ’70 Chevelle that someone t-boned in Providence and I wanted a new vehicle. Oddly enough, my grand uncle had a 1956 Chevy Apache stake body for his farm truck. Just looking at the step sides, I knew I wanted one. Already in ’77 you could buy them with graphics on the paint to obtain a sporty look. However, I wanted a plain Jane. The one I bought came out of Amherst, Mass sight unseen. I paid $4,400 for a Holly Green truck, but when I saw it I knew it would someday be something other than a plain Jane. CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

Two years after I bought it, I saw an old girlfriend of mine and she remarked, “It looks like a DPW truck”. The bitch and I vowed revenge some day.

Jerry’s Chevy

Looking over my truck and comparing it to cars with the ease of cleaning the truck versus cleaning the car from dirt and road salt, I washed it constantly underneath the wheel wells and the chassis. During those years most all vehicle manufacturers were looking for 15 MPG from a 175 HP smog motor-(350 coupled to a Saginaw trans). In 1977, I began using Mobil 1 and didn’t look back. Twenty years later my maintained work horse needed upgrades and visual enhancements, and since my wife’s large family all had cars-no trucks, we decided to go with some changes. When modifications began to appear to my vehicle, even my own family turned their noses up-“It’s just a truck”. So I gave it some “shock value” by having the folks at Conti’s Auto Service & Motorsports do most of what you see in the pictures except the body and paint. Now it’s very close to what I had first envisioned when I ordered the truck. The attention to detail with an infinite pallet of creativity took this vehicle to the same place a 29 year old hadn’t envisioned yet.

Etch mats the gas pedal and the GTO launches from its stopped position. The front tires lift off the ground to the echoing sound of the dual exhaust and then screaming rear tires. 12 VOLT NEWS Let The Beats Rock!

GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center

There’s nothing quite like the sweet sound of your favorite music coming clearly through your cars audio system. Unfortunately, the stock Speakers in most older or inexpensive cars really are nothing quite like that. Unless you happen to get a new car with expensive factory audio, you are forced to listen to tinny, crackling distortions that drive any music lover nuts! To get a complete stereo upgrade worth paying for, you normally need to spend a few thousand dollars to replace everything from the head unit, the power wiring, the speaker wiring and Speakers. And of course, you would be adding aftermarket Amplifiers, Speaker Enclosures and other Accessories. That’s a big project and a lot to pay all at once. There is some good news though, you can get a huge improvement in sound just by replacing the factory Speakers that came with your car. The cheap Speakers that come with most cars are made with the lowest quality material and construction methods to keep costs down. You will typically find weak paper cones, poor wiring and a brittle glue holding it all together. These materials degrade quickly after much use since an audio Speaker is really a moving part in your car. But the cheap ones are not very mechanically sound. Even inexpensive aftermarket Speakers will sound better then factory Speakers. At the lowest end of aftermarket Speakers will have better quality cones, domes and wiring. Paper may still be used in the cones and domes, but it will be heated and stiffened to provide better sound quality and more durability. If you can spend a little more money you can get into some more exotic materials such as, carbon fiber or specially designed plastics. This type of Speaker will give you even more range, durability, and have a higher threshold for power if you choose to add amplifiers to your system down the road.

While your standard Speakers often try to produce bass, tremble and mid-range sounds all within one unit, aftermarket Speakers often feature multiple components like Tweeters and Woofers that produce their own sounds. You get a higher quality sound and a more pleasing and distinct audio range this way. The type of Speakers that you will encounter in the car audio world: Woofer: It is a large Speaker designed to reproduce the lower frequencies in the audio spectrum. Mid-Range: It is a medium size Speaker designed to reproduce the middle frequencies in the audio spectrum. Tweeter: It is a small size Speaker designed to reproduce the highest frequencies in the audio spectrum. These are just the basic and common Speakers that an average consumer may consider. There are other types of more advanced Speakers that could be considered but the above-referenced Speakers are the most common.

There are basically two types of Speaker Systems. 1. Co-Axial, Three-Way, Full-Range, Etc. – These speaker systems are designed into the factory speaker location in your vehicle, they are often referred to a speaker but have more than one speaker and will also contain a cross over. 2. Components and Separates – These speaker systems essentially take everything above and break it into parts. If you’re interested in upgrading your system with a set of Speakers, you

Going up one more step, you can get Speakers designed for stock speaker replacement that will have a special configuration that puts two speakers typically a Mid-range and a Tweeter into the same space as a single Speaker. And if you have a compatible vehicle, you can even get a Tweeter and a Mid-Range Speaker kits that have the Tweeter in a separate enclosure for your place in an appropriate spot in your car.

Look for Us at Local Cruise Nights from April through September

It may seem like overkill to spend much money putting good Speakers into your car without replacing the Tuner or adding Amps, but you will notice a big improvement with this one change and it paves the way to upgrading your System incrementally. By replacing the Speakers first, you will be able to enjoy better sound immediately while you take the time to upgrade your System. Let’s start by taking a look at Speakers, these are perhaps the easiest way to improve your car audio quality, since they produce the actual sound within the confines of your car.

Charity Challenge 2016 NEW ENGLAND DRAGWAY HOSTS THE ANNUAL DRAG RACING EXTRAVAGANZA

ED YESSAIAN

As part of the 12th Annual ED DAY event, New England Dragway hosted the Charity Challenge drag racing series that is currently the ONLY 100% non-profit drag racing event known to exist. On this day racers form teams of four with each team choosing their own charitable organization that could receive as much as 1000.00 in donations, should a member of that particular team be successful. For 2016, this even saw its largest turn out EVER, with 66 racers and 11 Junior Dragsters. Friends and families gathered to cheer on their favorite racers and support their chosen charity, and when the tire smoke cleared, a handful of contenders stood proud in the winner’s circle… CHARITY CHALLENGE WINNER- Sponsored by Southern NH Undercar James Keyes ripped his 1971 Pinto down the track to victory in an extremely close matchup with RI’s most famous stick-car racer Keith Calitri. Keyes donated his 1000.00 winnings to the Aubrey Reis College Fund. CHARITY CHALLENGE RUNNER UP- Sponsored by TASCA Automotive Group Rhode Island’s most famous gearbanger Keith Calitri put in a killer effort all day and gave James Keyes a run for his money in the final. Calitri still managed to win a 500.00 donation to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. CHARITY CHALLENGE GAMBLER’S RACE- Sponsored by Evviva Cucina

This was a classic battle of Mustang Vs Camaro in the high horsepower segment of the event. Southern NH Undercar’s Dan Christopher outshined AJ Cowing to take the top prize, a 300.00 donation that he sent to Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation. CHARITY CHALLENGE JUNIOR DRAGSTER- Sponsored by Town Fair Tire Woburn The Christopher Family of Raymond, NH chalked up another victory and another 250.00 donation to Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation as the youngest of the group, Tyler Christopher edged out Kyle Murray in the Junior Dragster Division. Tyler dedicated his race and his win to his Grandfather. CHARITY CHALLENGE BEST REACTION TIME- Sponsored by Viking Motorsports Cutting a respectable light isn’t easy, but judging by Tom “Magoo” Whatley’s multiple victories in this category, you would have to believe he’s a natural. Beating his competition with a stick-car, Whatley averaged .001 lights to capture his second title and send a 250.00 donation to the ASPCA. CHARITY CHALLENGE FASTEST E.T- Sponsored by Performance Dyno While there was a handful of cars running high 8’s and low 9’s, no one even came close to topping Dan Christopher’s 8.23 @167mph. Dan 42| Motorhead Magazine - June 2016

also beat his own record for Fastest Pass in ED DAY History and promises high 7 second times at the 2017 event. Dan sent 250.00 to Multiple Sclerosis Research in honor of his win.

Sarah Edwards Giving Back Story and photos by TOM McCARTHY for Motorhead Magazine Ever since Sarah Edwards was a little girl, she’s been excited by drag racing, especially the jet cars. “I remember what it was like for me when I was a little kid, to see the big jet cars run” she recalls. “When I was twelve in 2004, my dad and I went to E-Town in NJ and I saw Jessie Harris go over 300 MPH in the Queen of Diamonds jet dragster. That was the most exciting thing I’d ever seen in my life. I remember what that was like for me, so now I want to give back to kids of today. I want them to see and feel what I did.” It was a defining moment for Sarah, she had an epiphany at that race and has been in pursuit of her dream ever since; to be that person in the driver’s seat. To date, she’s spent half her life leading up to this moment in time. Much of her life has been spent in preparation to take the wheel of a jet dragster. As the 2016 racing season unfolds, Sarah is now ready to take the wheel and live her dream as she enters her rookie season as a Jet car driver for the Hanna Motorsports, Queen of Diamonds II, jet dragster. She graduated high school in 2010, then in July she attended the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School. There she learned how to drive a dragster and earned her NHRA Super Comp class license. In the summer of 2012, her family purchased a Mullis dragster, and the family formed the “Queen Bee Racing”team consisting of Sarah, her Dad Scott doing the wrenching, her boyfriend Steve handling

the electrical/computer work, and her Mom, making sure the team stays focused. Her team began actively competing in NJ, at Atco, Dragway, in the Top Dragster and Super Pro racing classes.

And when the weekends arrive, she trades in her interior designer wardrobe for a racing helmet and a fire suit. “This is my first season driving and racing a jet dragster, but it won’t be my last” she commented in an interview recently. “It’s like my whole life has been leading up to this moment, I have a true passion for this.”

In recent years, Sarah has gone quicker and faster each season. When her performance elapsed times dropped into the mid-7 second elapsed time zone, at speeds in excess of 180 MPH, she earned her Advanced ET, competition license in the summer of 2014, from the National Hot Rod Association rac44| Motorhead Magazine - June 2016

Drag racing school is not the only school Sarah has attended since leaving high school. Sarah has earned her Associates Degree, in Interior Design, from Norwalk Community College. During the work week, Sarah works with an interior designer in her hometown of Stamford, CT. She also works a part time job with a construction company, doing administrative work.

With her driving credentials well earned from 2010 through 2015, when Sarah, took the driving job with Hanna Motorsports as a jet car driver, she was well received by the team. Her training began in the late fall of 2015, then resumed in the spring of 2016 with trips to Atco NJ and also New England Dragway. With determination she earned her jet car driver’s license with the NHRA sanction and she’s now experienced five-second elapsed times

FACTORY FIVE RACING

Mustangs of Massachusetts Takes a Road Trip

ED YESSAIAN For almost a decade I’ve been trying to get myself out to Wareham, Massachusetts, to visit the Factory Five Racing facility. And every single summer, it never fails that something comes up to ruin my plans to check out the massive headquarters of the biggest name in component car kits. Starting from just a small two bay garage over 20 years ago, in 1995, Factory Five racing has grown to over 62,000 square feet of operational space. In their own words, “…our success comes directly from our collaboration with our customers”. And that statement could not be truer as over the

years I have met dozens of satisfied customers that praise the company’s commitment to their satisfaction before, during, and after their builds. With so much positive feedback related to Factory Five racing, I was thrilled to finally be embarking on the journey I had waited so long for. This trip was part of a Saturday morning cruise that was organized by Beth Leporati from the Mustangs of Massachusetts. Upon arrival to the

48| Motorhead Magazine - June 2016

Factory Five facility the club members had a short meet and greet session to catch up with friends and engage in some Mustang chat. Once the tour began, I walked around in complete amazement at how far this company has evolved as far as the manufacturing processes and the constant improvements in fit and finish. At the conclusion of the tour we were welcomed into the actual showroom of the Factory Five building where 6-8 finished models awaited our enjoyment. As if the privilege of just seeing and photographing them wasn’t enough, we were told to feel free to open them up, sit inside, and get the feel for some of the cars. This was the best part of my day. To be trusted with such high end builds and to be encouraged to enjoy them was truly a generous gesture on the part of their owners and staff. And being in the customer service industry myself, I truly have to extend my sincerest gratitude and compliment their staff. I’m sure that members of their staff experience quite a few “window shoppers” and everyone knows that time is money, but these guys and girls didn’t seem to mind in the least. One thing I noticed about their entire staff is that every single member of Factory Five Racing was pleasant, knowledgeable, and extremely enthusiastic about the products. When I originally walked in for the tour I was convinced that I wanted a Type 65 Coupe, as this was one car I have wanted for as long as I can remember. But after talking to the Factory Five employees and getting a firsthand look at their 33 Hot Rod kit, I’m pretty sure I may have been swayed towards that

particular kit. Even better, my wife also LOVED the 33 Hot Rod, which more easily justifies the time and money involved in such a project. Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable days I have had in a long time. But it wasn’t over yet!! From Factory Five’s Facility in Wareham, Beth Leporati had a scenic Mustang cruise and reservations at 2 Jerks BBQ in Raynham, MA. We arrived just in time to enjoy some of the area’s absolute BEST BBQ foods!! After lunch the group split up into a few smaller groups, heading off in different directions towards home, with the day being a definite success. Thanks again to Factory Five, 2 Jerks BBQ, and Mustangs of Massachusetts for a truly amazing day!!

MILITARY MUSCLE THE PREZ RICK LACOURSE’S SUPERCHARGED 06 GT

ED YESSAIAN

If there was ever one man that could simply do it all, it would have to be NH Mustang Club President Rick LaCourse. By day he is a Master Certified Automotive technician, specializing in multiple manufacturers and on the side he has extensive experience in the collision repair industry. In addition to fixing cars, Rick also enjoys driving, racing, and showing his collection, which includes his latest custom creation, a supercharged 2006 Mustang GT. Rick’s GT was stock for less than one day. It started out as a birthday gift that he gave to himself in late 2005 and by day two he had the thing torn apart, to the point of no return. He was determined that this thing was going to FLY! And when he said fly, he meant that he wanted to feel like he was back behind the wheel of a fighter jet, from his days as a US Air Force pilot. Rick served a term of six years as a flight simulator crew chief of F4 Phantoms and F16 Falcons and as a fighter pilot flight trainer. Coincidently Rick was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base which was converted in to a NASCAR

Racing track. Although he hasn’t been to that actual track lately, Rick is no stranger to the multiple forms of racing, including road course, autocross, and ¼ mile drag racing. And of course his car is more than capable of holding its own. To make sure he didn’t fall behind the pack while racing, Rick’s first big modification was a Saleen Series VI supercharger that whips up 8psi of boost. American Racing long tube headers free up the flow of exhaust gases and a Saleen Parnelli Jones exhaust sends it out the tailpipes. After a trip to Performance Dyno, the car spun a best of 430rwhp that was good for a ¼ mile elapsed time of 11.8 @ 118mph. That’s a pretty impressive run with just a handful of modifications and this car is 52| Motorhead Magazine - June 2016

more than just GO, this car is a total showstopper!! From a distance, you can tell this car isn’t a stock Mustang GT, but the exterior modifications are

subtle and tasteful. Shelby GT front and rear bumpers replaced the stock pieces and a Cervini’s Stalker 2 hood gives the car the menacing look that immediately grabs your attention. A CDC Ducktail spoiler brings the car back to the good old days and of course the two-tone paint sets the car apart from the usual stock look. As a collision repair specialist, Rick wanted just the right combination of flash and class, without going too “over the top”. The bottom of the car remained the factory black but from the belt line up he went with Ford’s newest three stage Ruby Red. A staggered set of Bullitt wheels completes the award winning appearance, and judging by his trophy room, his ideas for the car have thus far been successful. I’ve continuously asked Rick which of his many Mus-

tangs is his favorite and he always chooses this 06 GT, he wouldn’t elaborate on any future plans but he did say that the Corvettes and Camaro’s would be crying after the next set of modifications. In closing Rick reminded all of us that Cruise Night is Saturday Night at Advance Auto Parts in Hooksett, NH, so bring this copy of Motorhead if you would like it autographed by the PREZ!!

HORSEPOWER JONATHAN “MOPAR MANIAC” BERNIER Horsepower, it’s the stuff that makes our cars go fast. We all know that, but what exactly does it mean and how does it work? For those of us who aren’t physicists, today we’re going to break down what horsepower is, how to calculate it, and what the different formats are in the automotive industry. First and foremost, what is horsepower? Horsepower is a unit of measure used when measuring the rate of work being done. Now I know what you’re thinking: “Work! I know work! I do that ten to twelve hours a day! I must have loads of horsepower!” No, not that kind of work. To make things simple, horsepower is force being applied over time. In the internal combustion engine, the force is torque and the time is the RPMs of the motor. We all know that RPMs stand for the rotations of the crankshaft per minute, but you might not know what torque really is. Torque is simply defined as rotational force. In an automotive aspect, it usually represents the flywheel spinning, but is sometimes measured at the wheels. Knowing what these terms are now allows us to easily calculate horsepower at any RPM with a given torque rating given the equation:

For example, if we have a powerful V-8 cranking out 500 Ft/Lbs of torque at 5000 RPMs, we would have 476 horsepower. The only question that remains is what kind of horsepower does that give us? Did we calculate gross horsepower, net horsepower, brake horsepower or wheel horsepower? And what’s the difference? Until 1972, the SAE standard rating was gross horsepower. Gross horsepower is measured at the flywheel of a motor with no accessories attached to the engine. This means we are measuring the true output of the motor with no alternator, power steering, or any other power sapping devices. This sounds like a great way to measure power, but it provides little practical, real-life information. In 1972 net horsepower became the standard. Like gross horsepower, net horsepower is measured at the flywheel, but this time we have all the accessories on, as if it were sitting inside a road-ready car, giving us a more practical number. Brake horsepower, or BHP, is a term that fell out of regular use around the time net horsepower became standardized because it is a generic way of saying horsepower measured at the flywheel, not specifying gross or net. Finally we have wheel horsepower. Wheel horsepower, as the name implies, is the amount of power being delivered to the wheels, by the fully equipped motor, through the transmission, drive-shaft, and the differential. Instead of being measured on an engine dyno, wheel horsepower is measured on a chassis dyno, and gives us a true reading of how much power the car, as a whole, is putting to the ground. So there you have it folks, you can now confidently define and calculate your horsepower at any RPM if you know your torque output and you can use the correct units so you can sound smart while you do it. You can never have too much power, but always remember, with great horsepower, comes great responsibility.
