Meet Realtor Danica Chase ®
By JENNIFER COATES
Determined. Spunky. Diligent and hard-working. These are but a few of the many adjectives that could be used to describe Danica Chase, a realtor who burst on the residential real estate scene last year. Danica, a 43-yearold mother of five teenagers, is a Massachusetts-licensed realtor who is now licensed to practice here in Rhode Island as a member of the team at the renown Berkshire Hathaway agency. She is full of energy and enthusiasm, but she is also a “put your nose to the grind” type of person. If you are in the process of buying or selling a house in the middle of this volatile housing market, then you need Danica Chase by your side.
your family. Before becoming a licensed Realtor, Danica worked many jobs, honing her natural talents and sharpening her skills. One of those jobs was as a Paralegal in a prestigious law firm. At this job, Danica worked extensively with real estate law, especially with titles. In this capacity, she learned the importance of “reading the fine print”, of scrutinizing documents before signatures were penned, of making sure that both client and customer knew all that they were agreeing to. These experiences have proven to give her a depth of understanding that even more seasoned Realtors don’t have. Another influential job in her career was working in a hospice center. Her time there taught her skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. Here, Danica learned the invaluable lessons of how to talk with people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Though not a medical professional, Danica was able to spend time with the center’s patients and build close bonds with them. Danica is a natural with people from all walks of life. Danica is a laser-focused, motivated, highly relatable, and intuitive person. She knows from personal experience the joy of homeownership. She is a dreamer but also a realist who will go to bat for you as you sell or buy your home - whether you are buying your first house or selling your lifelong home.
For as long as she can remember, Danica has loved house-hunting. As you begin your buying or selling process, reach out to Danica Chase. RIP ROARIN’ RANGER!! Ryan Lombardo’s Nitrous Fed F100 ED YESSAIAN Over the past 30+ years I have probably been to a few hundred car shows and cruise nights. I’ve even had the honor and privilege of judging many of them and that has helped me develop a keen eye for detail and originality. Obviously, I have my own particular style and preferences but one of the most difficult things I learned while judging is thinking outside my own comfort zone. This helped me develop an appreciation for the actual vehicle in front of me and taught me how to focus on the uniqueness of a particular build. While Jeep Wranglers and Mustang Cobra’s will always be my forte, sometimes I spot a vehicle outside those parameters that completely blows me away. This was the case with Ryan Lombardo’s 1970 Ford F100 Ranger XLT. From clear across the show field, I spotted Ryan’s Boxwood Green F100. The stance alone peaked my 12| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

intertest enough to require a closer look and once I did an initial walk around, I was not disappointed, especially once I spied the Nitrous bottle tucked between the front seats. To be honest though, this truck is truly a masterpiece!! It is the perfect combination of street and strip, with all the necessities covered but definitely not overdone, as I’ve seen on a lot of truck builds in the past. The first piece of jewelry to catch my attention was under the hood. A 445ci monster stuffed with a Comp Cam, all the best forged internals, and topped with Bear Block Motors heads and a Shelby dual plane intake. An MSD ignition fires up the engine then a Tremec TKO600 with McLeod clutch helps put the power to the ground. The rear end is a beefed-up Ford 9-inch assembly with 35 spline axles, TrueTrac, and a set of 3.73’s. For that rare occasion when Ryan needs to slow down, all four corners hide disc brakes as well as some functional suspension upgrades.
Because this truck sees it’s share of the drag strip, Ryan needed a happy medium when choosing suspension components so in the rear he went with dearched leaf springs, Caltracs, and an anti-roll bar. This helps hook the Mickey Thompson drag radials before he slingshots the truck down the track. Front suspension was treated to DJM drop beams and Explorer coils, with Viking drag shocks tying in every corner. I can only imaging what a blast this truck is to drive and was amazed to hear that this was once his daily driver. Ryan originally picked up the truck in Tennessee with a 390/C6 combination and no power steering or power brakes. Over time his love for fabrication and customizing vehicles just took over and the truck became an undying passion. Personally, I would love to get this thing to the track more and into the Outlaw 10.50 program. Who knows, maybe the next time you see this gorgeous thing it could be in the Winner’s Circle at New England Dragway!!

The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. OUTLAW 10.50 SEASON OPENER The Triumphant Return of Ed Miller and Rob Ingles ED YESSAIAN Photos By PRIMETIME VIDEO AND PHOTO The Outlaw 10.50 series at New England Dragway has been one of my favorite classes for probably close to 15 years. It mixes “heads up” style with the strategy of index racing. But the actual racing isn’t the only thing that has kept me in this group. The racers themselves are hands down, the absolute best people you could ever compete with. Any racer, in any index, will gladly help out a fellow driver, especially those that are new to the class. However, when the tree drops, be warned, there are some top-notch competitors here and the upper indexes boast some of the most accurate drivers in the drag racing world. With this being said we opened the Outlaw 10.50 series on Saturday, April 30th, with a decent car count and the return of many faces from the past. At the end of a very enjoyable day, the hardware went home with the following people…

R TRUE STREET 12.50- Two of our all-time favorite veterans battled it out in this final as Papa Bagnell would take out Steve George to capture the win in week 1. REAL STREET 11.50- Gene Hubert would have a great day of racing leading up to the final, but like so many other competitors he would “feel the burn”, Blackburn!! The defending Real Street Champion and connoisseur of Fireball Ralph Blackburn showed no signs of slowing down his momentum from last season. FAST STREET 10.50- This final featured two returning superstars, Ed Miller and Greg
Bagnell Jr. After the closest race of the day, Miller woukd edge out Bagnell by less than a fender. SUPER STREET 9.50- One of the highlights of the day was watching Michelle Sanford moving up a class to try her hand in 9.50. She would waltz to the final and make short work of former champion Gregg Boudreau. WILD STREET 8.50- The much-anticipated return of Rob Ingles did not disappoint, as Ingles, previously a 9.50 competitor, introduced himself to the Wild Street group and shined in the final against multiple time champion Bill Sanford.

Motorcycle and drag-sled racing action for the 2022, drag racing season, is now well underway at New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping NH. The track points classes are comprised of the Fast by Gast Top Bike series, the New England Dragway Street Fighter series and the New England Dragway Motorcycle / Snowmobile Eliminator class.
In addition to the tried and true points classes at NED, the drag sleds have two very successful racing classes, the Northeast PS800 Snowmobile asphalt drag racing series, and the Northeast Pro Mod Asphalt Sled Series. In their fourth year now, these additional classes are proving to be an encouraging new source of racers. The Pro Stock 800 class had 19 entries on Saturday, April 30th first race of the season, and the Pro Mod Asphalt racers fielded 8 racers in attendance. More on New England Dragway drag-sled racing at a later date. The motorcycle/sled class racers of the VP Racing Fuels ET Series began their points chase on Sunday, April 24th, with NED many time champion Ed Hughes running the table that day. Ed was low qualifier by virtue of his quickest reaction time during qualifying, then he went on to win the opening race of the season. Michael Ducharme put up the best fight of the race, by his runner-up that day resulting in an all-Kawasaki final match up. 20| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

Mike Christopher Jr. Rockets To First NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Trophy at Jennerstown Speedway
JENNERSTOWN, Pa. – Tommy Baldwin Racing is taking control of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. On Saturday, at Jennerstown Speedway in Pennsylvania, the team was back in Victory Lane for the third straight Tour event – this time with Connecticut rising star Mike Christopher Jr. behind the wheel.
Christopher, who was making just his third Whelen Modified Tour start, took the lead from polesitter Tyler Rypkema with 11 laps to go in the Jennerstown Salutes 150 and held on for his first trophy. Christopher beat Rypkema, who led the field to the green flag for the first time in his career after winning the Mayhew Tools Dominator Pole Award, and New York native J.B. Fortin to the finish line after 150 laps.
and I had this scheduled, and I had a lot of shoes to fill. I can’t give it up enough to the team. I have to thank everyone involved that helps out on the car, especially Tommy Baldwin. I’ve had a lot of fun with him over the years, but it’s just getting better. Tommy gave me an opportunity to run Tour cars, and with this being my first time coming here, I couldn’t be happier to park it here in Victory Lane.”
Victory Lane: Mike Christopher, Jr.
“I’m really happy and really proud of what Tommy Baldwin has done this year,” Christopher Jr. said. “Doug (Coby) won the last two races,

Rypkema led the early laps from pole position and led the field for much of the early stages of the race, topping the race at the halfway point. Shortly after, on lap 89, Jon McKennedy took the No. 79 to the top spot, leading the field across the Photo by Rob Branning line to the caution flag with 50 laps to go when Kyle Bonsignore crashed. However – on the pit stop during the caution period – McKennedy had pit road trouble, and shuffled back into the middle of the field. The battle for the final 35 laps was between Rypkema and Christopher. It was Christopher shortly after the green who put the No. 7NY out front, but Rypkema passed him for the lead with 31 laps to go, and looked to be in control. But, Christopher didn’t let him get away. After hounding the back bumper, Christopher made the move late to rocket to his first career win. His only two previous Whelen Modified Tour starts were at Riverhead Raceway (2021) and the 2022 season opener at New Smyrna Speedway, where he finished third. “It’s hard to be mad about this,” Rypkema said. “To lead over 100 laps… we were just so tight the last run and I held Mike off the longest I could. It’s a great day for us… we led a ton of laps and we have a good notebook going for here with a solid finish.” J.B. Fortin posted a career best third-place finish, while Andrew Krause and Tommy Catalano finished the top-five. McKennedy rebounded to sixth, the last car on the lead lap at the finish, while Max McLaughlin, Justin Bonsignore, Ron Silk and Craig Lutz finished the top-10. “We had a stout car from the beginning,” Fortin said. “On the long

The pre-race ceremonies included a Blackhawk Helicopter flyover, while also remembering fallen heroes and Gold Star Families to celebrate Memorial Day. All NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour cars and Jennerstown Late Models carried the name of a fallen hero on their roof for the day. Multiple families of fallen heroes were also in attendance. BUILT NOT BOUGHT
By MARK LABRANCHE
This is a series of articles that will be looking at cars that are built not bought. Simply said people who built their cars themselves with friends and family. Nothing wrong with buying an already built car turnkey. I have much respect for any Motorhead! If you out there having fun, riding in a car that is just cool to me. For myself, I can’t stop looking with amazement at the caliber of cars that are built in someone’s garage or under a lean-to. In the up-and-coming articles you will see jaw dropping cars that were built by their owners, with their own hands, sweat and tears. Some will have close friends or family helping them, guiding them or maybe even painting it for them. The bottom line is that they took the time to build their car, their time and long hours, to get it done.

The body work has been a lot of work. The Nova has gone through a lot of changes over the years. It went from on the street to drag car about 2001. That is when a lot of the time, labor of love and work went into the car. Tim and his brother replaced the quarter panels, trunk pan,

Article 4 is about a family build. I saw this Nova in the pits in primer and it just caught my eye. I liked the way it looked, and it just screamed home build with a ton of hours in it. I am so happy I went over to the two brothers who had built the car. They were working on the car, so I did not want to stop what they were doing. I came back and I was glad I did. Tim Mcleish and his brother Chris built this 1971 Nova. There is a long history with them and the car. Tim has owned the car since about 1998. It has been one of the most important projects in his life. It always ties Tim back to his brother Chris and his family and friends. Tim has kept the car in storage when he couldn’t afford to race, or while he was getting money together to get to the next phase of the project. The car was raced at Speedworld in Surprise, Arizona, which is now

S&W roll cage. They used B&T Auto Supply for all their autobody needs. Probably one of the most helpful people in the whole process, Tim will tell you that right away. Wilwood drag race brakes all around, and master cylinder. All installed by family and friends. They are working out all the bugs of the combination now and then when it is good, they will paint the car. I think that is a good plan. It may not be all shiny and all painted up now, but it is the Built and Not Bought part that I like the most about this car. When talking to them, you know that this car brought them together, it has meaning to them and the family. Don’t even ask if they would sell it, this car will always be in this family. Go to New England Dragway and check this Nova out, talk to the guys. Support New England Dragway, bring the family, have a good time. Eat some good food, buy a t-shirt, and just have some fun. You can go down to the pits and check out every single car. Where else can you walk right up to the car, talk to the driver and all their friends up close and personal I ask you? I hope you like this article as much as I do. Family and friends are where it is at! MEMORIES OF THE PURPLE CAT DINER AND PLANS FOR A NEW BEGINNING
JIM WEICHERDING Residing in Northern Rhode Island you pretty much do not have much of a choice of main roadways or primary streets that you can take while driving to locations around the state of Rhode Island, South Central Massachusetts and Eastern Connecticut. The main arteries often take you by places that you see on almost a daily basis.
One building and location that will be sadly missed by not only myself, but a majority of other residents living and working in the communities of Burrillville and Glocester, Rhode Island: The Purple Cat Restaurant. This very popular restaurant started out as a simple diner and kitchen back in the year 1929. The La Voie Family, from Glocester, Rhode Island, purchased two trolley cars from the Old Woonsocket Fairmont Line and converted them into a diner and kitchen. Family members of the Stafford’s and Kenny “Skip” LaVoie eventually built

The Pascoag Race Track eventually opened for business and The Purple Cat Restaurant thrived throughout the 40’s and 50’s. Ada LaVoie’s son, Jim Silverthorne, managed the restaurant and catered to all of the race tracks horse owners, trainers and jockeys. Skip and Rose LaVoie remodeled The Purple Cat Restaurant in 1964. A dining room was added along with a cocktail lounge. Customers also enjoyed live entertainment and live bands once remodeling was completed. Unfortunately, the restaurant was forced to close for three months due to a Thanksgiving Eve fire that severely destroyed the kitchen area and buildings roof in 1971. TRACK PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE MCCARTHY: SPECIAL HONORS
Mike McCarthy, long time drag racing photographer has been recognized by The Orientals Hot Rod Club, as an outstanding photographer who has made significant contributions to preserving the history of drag racing. He will be inducted into the class of 2022 inductees, which will take place during the New England Hot Rod Nationals, July 31st, 2022, at New England Dragway. Tom McCarthy Photography
TOM McCARTHY In early April, 2022, New England Dragway track photographer Mike McCarthy got an unexpected phone call from Jim Blake of the Orientals Hot Rod Club. Mike answered the call as casual as usual and was caught off-guard by the subject matter: “Mike congratulations, you are being inducted into the Orientals Hot Rod Club Hall of Fame!” Mike’s reaction: “I was stunned, shocked to say the least. I really could not believe it when I got the call. This is a tremendous honor from the Orientals.” On July 31st, the 2022 Hall of Fame inductees will be: Debbie DiGenova, Tasca Family Racing, Mike McCarthy, and Spur Brothers Racing. Formed in 1957, the Orientals Hot Rod Club, of Redding, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest, still functioning Hot Rod Clubs in the United States. The Orientals maintains their Hall of Fame located on the grounds of New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping, NH. Other New England racing photographers who have previously been inducted into the New England Hot Rod Hall of Fame include, Ed Sarkisian (2003) and Paul Wasilewski (2010). “I shot beside those guys back in the day. I started shooting in 1968, I was 17 when I started shooting. My first camera was a Polaroid, it was just point and shoot, hope for the best. You took a photo, when the film packet came out, you gave it a few shakes, waited 60 seconds, then peeled off the outer sheet and you had a finished 4x5 inch photograph.” He further elaborated “I was friends with a local representative of Drag News, a national news paper which in 1968 was in competition with NHRA’s paper, National Dragster. And he asked me if I’d like to go to the races and he could get me in free, and all I had to do was use 28| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

his camera and take a few photos. And that’s how it started for me We were covering not only NHRA, but IHRA, AHRA and local tracks too. So I was able to go to Sanford Maine, Oxford, New England Dragway opened up in 1966, Colchester, Connecticut, Lebanon Valley Dragway. So I got to shoot and travel and see a lot of cool stuff.” Today in 2022, Mike shoots a modern-day Nikon D5200 with an 18140mm zoom lens. But when he started out as a photographer, he began with a point and shoot Polaroid and by 1969 he went to a camera shop and bought a Pentax with a standard 55-millimeter standard lens. A fellow shooter taught Mike how to load and shoot roll-film, process the film into negatives and make prints. Mike’s photographic education was all self-taught for the most part. “It was point and shoot, learn as you go for me” as he recalls. “Once I got the Pentax, it was a big step up for me. Now I had three rolls of 36 to bring with me to the track. With 100 pictures a day, I was able to learn a lot and get some good stuff. And because Drag News was weekly, I had to process film quickly and get it in the mail to the office for whatever they were working on.” Mike shot with Drag News till 1972, when his priorities changed. “I was young and it was time for me to start a family and get on with life, so when the time came, I just walked away. I got married in 1972 and just got on with life.” Fast forward to the modern era, and after attending a few of the old Hot Rod reunion events, one thing led to another and between the interactions of the computer internet era and social media, Mike found his way back into the mix. Old friends and fellow racers like Don Roberts and Gill Corain helped Mike make connections. In 2016 when Richie Coury took over as the track photographer at New EnContinued Next Page

But basically it was point and shoot again, just as it was in 1968. These new digital cameras are amazing.” The 2022 Orientals induction ceremony for the class of 2022 inductees will take place during the New England Hot Rod Nationals, July 31st, 2022, at New England Dragway. READERS RIDES 1969 PAUL’S OPEL GT
JIM WEICHERDING I write quite a few Readers Rides feature articles for Motorhead Magazine. Over the past ten years, probably more than I could count or even remember. That won’t be the case with this Readers Rides feature article. This month’s feature is an absolutely gorgeous 1969 Opel GT. Not only is it gorgeous and stands out in a crowd, it’s extremely rare. Paul Lonardo, a Cranston, Rhode Island resident, is the proud owner of this cool classic ride. Paul found this classic car in the state of Tennessee ten years ago and fell in love with it at first sight. Yes, love can happen at first sight. He purchased it from a private seller. The engine is a 1.9, 4 cylinder and get ready to “Buckle Up!” everyone: it gets 35 miles per gallon. With our current gas prices this classic car is a keeper. This particular make, year and model was factory built with an automatic transmission. Most did not. The rear end comes with low gear ratios but cruises just fine down any street, road or highway. The tires and wheels are factory stock items. Stopping power comes from disc brakes in the front with drum brakes in the rear. The interior is a beautiful fire red with a replaced headliner. The manual lever and cord inside the dashboard opens and closes the front headlight covers. That’s very cool. You can even find the key ignition on the steering column instead of on the dashboard like most classic vehicles from that era. This vehicle is painted gray but the photos do not do this ride justice. You have to physically see it in order to really appreciate it. The wash and shine comes from the hard work of Paul’s adorable granddaughter, 7-year old, Giovanna. This little girl is all about automobiles and she has a lot of fun with her grandpa cruising to, and from, area car shows during the summer months. She was properly using the T-handle center council shifter in this classic car since she was only 3-years old. That’s pretty impressive Giovanna! This Readers Rides 1969 Opel GT will not be one I ever forget. It’s rare, it’s gorgeous and it’s a keeper! CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

AMC Javelin in MN
By ROB MAY and GARY SIMEK Mercury and AMC mixed well in May at a Central California Mercury Club CCMC co-hosted with Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers event in Santa Maria California for the third year in a row. In Long Prairie, Minnesota, we found a similar story with a much longer history. This time, Mustangs mingle with a Javelin. While we will focus on Gary Simek’s 1970 AMC Javelin SST, this story begins with a 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and continues with a 1965 Mustang Convertible. Gary gained plenty of experience rebuilding classics. Owned since high school (1977), their Yellow and Black 1971 Mustang Mach 1 remains in the Simek family. This Ford was Gary’s and his wife’s, Marie, Honeymoon car. With good grades in high school, this car became his son’s, Joshua, car. Again, it was a wedding vehicle, this time at Eagle Scout Joshua’s wedding. Continuing the family tradition, the plan to pass the Mach 1 down to Joshua’s son. However, we are getting ahead of the story. AMC inspired the color of Marie’s 1965 Continued Next Page 36| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

Simek’s possession for over 14 years. Along with the Mark Donohue tributes, other options include the factory ram air 390 with Holley 4V and dual point distributor mated to a Hurst 4-speed, air conditioning inside, power brakes (disc front), power steering, and Trendsetter exhaust. This one has the additional optional roof spoiler. The whole family helped in its restoration. Over a winter, Gary’s late brother, Mark, helped mechanically to get the AMC back into shape. Gary and his son did body work, and Marie added to the rebuild effort. This Minnesota Street Rod Association (MSRA) Javelin has appeared in multiple car shows and calendars such as 2022 BASF National calendar, 2012 Mustang, and Autovalue July 2018 car parts calendar. BASF donated the Glasuit paint for the Javelin and Mustang (which also appeared in calendars). At the AMC reunion car show at Kenosha, over 1,000 AMC cars participated.
Mustang Convertible as it now sports Matador Red paint with black top. In an Age of Aquarius Fifth Dimension alignment, the build date of the 289 with auto transmission Ford has the same birthday as Ma-
Seeing examples of these classic Mustangs on the road is always a treat as they are not common. Even more so, certainly you don’t see Javelins on the road as much as the Mustangs. Gary says the Javelin is a blast to drive. Not only is it driven on roads, one tale involves a race down the ¼ mile drag strip in Brainerd, MN at the Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) against the Simek’s family Mustang Mach 1.
rie. This Mustang is driven around often such as to the Black Hills. Built in 1970 at the Kenosha, Wisconsin AMC factory, Simek’s Javelin was sold originally in Minnesota. One year only body styes are rare enough to find parts for to restore and to keep on the road. This Javelin is a limited-edition making its appearance even more scarce. As previously mentioned in Motorhead, a “Dan Gurney Special” is a Mercury Cougar option named after Dan’s Trans Am Racing Series efforts. Mark Donohue’s Trans Am series experience is also represented in 1970 with the Mark Donohue Javelin SST reflecting upon his AMC racing contributions. To be eligible for the series, 2501 production cars were manufactured. The Mark designed rear spoiler is a key addition along with heavier suspension and disc brakes. We have all heard of a barn find, well this one was a Chicken Coup find! 17 years buried in the coup, meant upon arrival, one couldn’t see under the hood. In fact, most of the AMC was hidden under wood planks. All four tires (sporting its factory rims) were flat. The wife of the seller hated the car and would intentionally put dings in it with door from another car. Now this AMC has safely remained in CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Art & Beth ’s W
By John Conti Arthur Delfino had worked the construction industry from his early childhood to current and had always been a high-performance enthusiast. Since his very early teenage years, he operated various types of heavy equipment for his father’s well know construction business, Delfino Corporation, which gave him a love for extreme power and always left a hunger for his automotive performance needs. After ownership of various vehicles including mustangs, early 60s corvettes and GMC pickup trucks, he satisfied one of his goals as a Mopar mid-60s convertible owner with this ‘64 convertible Sport Fury seen here, of which only less than 800 were produced.

Art has changed the dual-4 413 engine to a single 4-barrel, added headers and had cylinder head work done. Additional upgrades include fuel lines, exhaust system, front disc brakes, new Torqueflight 727 transmission and new paint, with help from Scott Dickinson and cousin Mick Green. The end result was 375 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels, which kept Art and his lovely wife, Beth happy for a while. Now, a new goal may be a 426 cross ram induction Hemi and heavier duty transmission and differential, with taller gears or a manual 5 or 6-speed (Beth likes to shift). A complete body rotisserie procedure along with a coil-over front suspension for ride improvement is likely in the works. The color might even change, who knows!? This happy top up/top down cruising couple will soon decide on the variables and will be looking forward to additional Mopar Hemi cruising happiness. 42| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

CAR SHOW PROPS
JIM WEICHERDING
Car Shows are great! I mean C’mon! The cool classic cars and trucks, muscle cars, hot rods and motorcycles are everywhere and fantastic automotive enthusiasts abound. Favorite oldies and classic rock songs playing across parking lots and fields thanks to some of the coolest DJ’s you can ever find: Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer, DJ Car Guy and his DJ crew along with Dick Salvas add a new dimension to these automotive events. There is another dimension taking place at these car shows and cruise nights that may be a dimension you overlook: (Car Show Props). Gotta love ‘em! These individuals go beyond the show vehicle showcases by bringing nos-
talgia prop items and display them inside and outside their rides. One of my personal favorites is the drive-in food establishments props that remind us of car hops bringing the foods and drinks right up to your vehicle windows as shown here in these photos. We can thank my friend, Dave Lallier, and his awesome ‘57 Chevy Bel Air for that photo opportunity. Another good friend of mine, Bob Lavallee, goes the distance with his nostalgia props by dressing a female store model passenger in a ‘50’s attire, displays a practically non-existent drive-in movies window speaker and assorted cool New England area well known and recognized props on his 1956 Chevy 2:10 backseat. I see all kinds of nostalgia props lately at car shows and cruise nights that

Outrunning the Rain... By ALLEN “VIP PRIMO” HARRIS, EXECUTIVE AUTOMOTIVE SOCIETY It was mere minutes before the Hopkinton Concours was about to start and it was hard to realize what brought this moment together. The adversity it faced. The event had been held off for two years. Just when it started to gain steam everything locked down. It was a story shared by many events that year, but times had changed. The Board of Health, like some weird unwelcome quality control inspectors were distinctly missing at car shows, no longer stopping by to make sure everyone was following the guidelines. The venue changed, but the name stayed the same. Although it said Hopkinton, Aston Martin Boston would be the destination. They would be a perfect location for the event moving forward. Even with the odd geography plans were finally looking up. That is until mere weeks before the event began and suddenly the police were no longer playing ball. With no police detail to cover the event they could be fined and kicked out, even on private property. Other events ran into the same problem and canceled or scrambled to find other options. Thankfully Hopkinton Concours had time. A great group of people jumped on board. A new venue in Bolton had been selected and once again the train hopped back on the tracks and began chugging its way down the tracks. That all changed a week before the event. Reports, once advertising 80 degree temperatures, began to change. The longer things went 48| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

the worst it became. From short showers to full blown wind and rain. Like a predator about to pounce it loomed at its worse the day before. The weather channels were reporting 66% chance of precipitation. Things weren’t looking good. Then the moment of truth came. The DJ called, and he needed an answer by 11:30 AM the day before. An odd time to be sure with an ever changing weather front. Suddenly a great deal of research was needed within minutes. Weather reports were combed through, satellite images, a car show became something of a science experiment in meteorology! Would the event go on? After a last ditch discussion, it was clear, the show must go on. It couldn’t be stalled anymore, no more cancelations. No more waiting. This was it. Like a poker player in a high stakes game seemingly holding a pair of two, they went all in. If you had seen it you probably would’ve checked a sleeve or two for a hidden ace, but there was none to be had. It was a mathematical guess that the best science could say, it could go either way. It was all or nothing. Skeptical attendees that had registered months in advance began to send messages of doubt. “It says here there’s rain,” one driver in a $200,000 car questioned. A stalwart response hid the apprehension, “don’t worry, it’ll be fine. You don’t want to miss this.” It was the best answer one could muster as the weather man, seemingly like opposition in a political campaign, continued to chant rain is assured if you elect to support this
points, Brady had suddenly mustered a return and they were suddenly about to win the game as everybody tuned in. Microfibers were quickly applied to wipe away any residual droplets that had stood adrift on top of ceramic coats. Bottles of tire shine were thrown quickly into the passenger seat while last minutes stops at the gas station to make sure the trip was assured. Sure some would be late, but the goal at this point was simple, not to miss this first event. The day could be called a resounding success in the face of adversity. Aston Martin continued to support the event and drove kids in their new DBX SUV. Craft Detailing offered a ceramic coat to one lucky winner and the food truck, once thinking it would be a slow

an event. The coordinators breathed a sigh of relief as volunteers began to roll in and place tables while sponsors placed their tent stakes. Attendees, once skeptical, now clamored to get their cars in order. Like an old Patriots game in the 4th quarter, down by countless
The fates had seen fit to throw literally everything in the book at the event and it had withstood the onslaught. Through the storm it had stood fast like a stalwart cabin in the midst of a tornado that finally realized it wasn’t going anywhere and when the day came it became a perfect home. A needed oasis as we began recovering from years in the desert. And like Moses splitting the sea, just as the event closed, and the attendees headed home, the rains returned. The Hopkinton Concours had finally outrun the rain.

EDSEL SANCTUARY
w e i v e r P
By ROB and GEORGINA MAY Driving out to the high desert in California, Vasquez Rocks marked the start of outer worlds. The hunt for rare objects described in ancient myths was the main adventure over Easter weekend. Mirages appeared on the sunny day, except upon closer inspection, the items proved to be real. Georgina Garcia May Photography gives us a sneak peak at the treasures found. While Cougars were found, another elusive creature was the real goal of this expedition. Amazingly, we were able to answer the question on where did all the Edsels in the world go. Over 118,000 Edsels were produced in three years (1958 – 1960). Nowadays only a few make their appearance at car shows. Underappreciated? Not here, we LOVE Edsels! This Edsel Sanctuary holds over 100 examples of this unique automobile.
on their tow vehicles, these cars initially found all over the United States range from part donors, drivers, survivors, to restored. Every option available can be found among this collection.
Here is a preview of the tour provided by William Cooke III and William Cooke Jr – the car’s owners and caretakers. Specific tales will be told in later months. Here are some preliminary details. Decades were spent by putting millions of miles 54| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

Spanning several acres, there are sections for every part imaginable. We inspected the hood, door, trunk, frame, rear axle (some factory locked), transmission, tire, and many more departments. There is nothing better than original items. These are NOT available at your local auto parts stores.
Edsels are extremely underrated as these vehicles were eager to start and drive the countryside. Weighing in at approximately 4,500 pounds and 18 feet long, the land yachts rode the roads
Two different engine series, “MEL” Mercury Edsel Lincoln and “FE” Ford Edsel, were created for the Edsel and carried its name. with ease. Our thanks extend to the Cooke family for the tour! Clubs of note include: Edsel Owners Club (EOC), International Edsel Club (IEC), and The Southlanders Edsel Owner’s Club.
(More on these to follow). Stay tuned for the full story from the Edsel Sanctuary in future issues of Motorhead.
William selected a 1958 Edsel Convertible for driving us around the longer tour runs. Note: in 1958 Edsels were the car of choice for the Los Angeles Dodgers Parade. It was a thrill to parade around in this spectacular example. The Edsel concept was quickly apparent upon moving the convertible out of its storage. External Edsel cues include the well-known center grill piece, emblems, lights incorporating the letter “E”, and three-piece hubcaps. Inside, we find the push button transmission selector on the steering wheel. Batman would approve of the rolling dome speedometer. Originality is appreciated here. Here, running cars are often left as survivors. Any perceived imperfections due to age are admired and understood. While several Edsels on site appeared to be direct from their initial dealership’s floor, any of these cars are “show” worthy due to their relevance to history. CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

AMC IS KING IN CA AMC show in CA
By ROB and GEORGINA MAY AMC is King in California, yes castle included! Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers of Northern and Central California hosted one of their main events in Santa Maria California on May 21 drawing in dozens of AMC cars from all over California. The event was co-hosted since 2020 by the Central California Mercury Club CCMC; however, we will focus on AMC this month. AMC American Motors Corporation (AMC) lineage begin with Nash in 1950 and sold in 1987 to Chrysler. Models produced include Rambler, Marlin, Ambassador, Pacers,

AMC
Ken Norman of Santa Maria is well known for often bringing 10 of his AMC cars to the event (along with other cars). A fan favorite is his Pink – 1960 Rambler American Super. The one he has owned the longest is a 1970s AMC Marlin. Ken restored this car, sold it to buy his first house, then bought it back six years later. Now itself is being re-painted / restored. the Elk’s Lodge in Santa Maria. Remember that castle we mentioned earlier? Recently, Hearst Castle near San Simeon California, recently re-opened to the public. Ken drove a 15 member team to a tour the Friday before the event. He encourages those in Colorado to visit the Rambler Ranch of Elizabeth, Colorado where 400 AMCs reside. 3 of those are cars Ken restored. Steve Green of Prunedale, CA has led Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers for five years. This year he helped feature his “Aquaman” AMC car – an Aurora Turquoise painted 1964 Classic. Key notes besides its color are the Stick Shift with overdrive mated to a 232 6 cylinder. This larger engine replaced the original smaller six. It is Blue inside and outside with painted White top while sporting dog dish caps on painted stock rims. Speaking of color, Steve has the sister to Ken’s Pink car. “Aquaman” was rescued from a junkyard by Joe Fulton from Salinas. Joe is a top-notch AMC restorer. He will not cut corners. Often, he learned crafts through YouTube such as welding and painting. At the show was his mid-70s Green Gremlin. Stan Kelly, Porterville, is now taking back over the club that he formed 25 years ago. His 1967 Red Marlin was on display. Its 290 and factory 4 speed helps make it 1 of 30 made. While this Marlin has only been in his possession for three years, his first AMC owned (and still has and drives) is his1965 Marlin bought on June 17, 1973. Parts have always been difficult to find. That is why he started the club in 1996. Currently, Stan has 43 AMCs including a 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup.

One may often associate the Pacer with AMC. Professional car restorer, Shelby Wright, of San Jose drove his to Santa Maria. Rambler Rebels earned many votes in the awards category. A Purple 2-door 1967 Rambler Rebel owned by Juan Torres of Los Angeles won Best of Show. This yearly event in Santa Maria California previously was held in Sept / October and now in May for the past couple shows. We look forward to featuring more AMC’s in Motorhead in future editions.

A MOTORHEAD PRAYER “Dear heavenly Hot Rod Jesus, please bless Motorhead readers, families, staff and advertisers with health and happiness. May we all have a life of prosperity and abundance. Please protect us from all demons...except the ones from Mopar...they are ok. May we all have a life of eternal combustion and deliver us all from electric cars.” ~ Amen

RECORD SETTING MOTORCYCLES HIGH
Tii Tharpe
TOM McCARTHY Record setting performances by drag bike pilots highlighted the NHRA Virginia Nationals, held May 13-15, 2022 at the Dinwiddie, Virginia race facility; Virginia Motorsports Park. Affectionately known within the racing community as VMP, the track is a bright star in the south-eastern United States equipped with modern lighting, voluminous paved parking in the pits and great food service varieties during major events. These are but a few reasons racers and fans love to attend big races at VMP. The NHRA Camping World, Virginia Nationals entertainment did not 62| Motorhead Magazine - June 2022

disappoint the fans, once the racing action was able to rock & roll. Mother Nature did her best to frighten off spectators and racers, but the tenacity of the VMP staff, the NHRA and loyal drag fans did not yield to threatening skies. The weather did shorten qualifying to one round on Friday and Saturday, but the track prep was there and record setting performances became a highlight of the event in the motorcycle drag racing classes of competition. Leading the list of most impressive performance was Top Fuel Motorcycle racer Larry “Spiderman” McBride who delivered the fastest pass ever recorded by a Top Fuel bike 268.38 MPH, on Saturday, May Continued Next Page
IGHLIGHT NHRA VIRGINIA NATIONALS 14th. In the process of running his 5.61 @ 268 MPH, Larry was side-by-side with Dave Vantine who stopped the clocks with a 5.89 @ 252 MPH. This is the second quickest SBS pass in T/F bike history. McBride’s 268.38 MPH blast is the new track record for motorcycles at VMP.
McBride was in attendance at the event with Dave Vantine, to do some exhibition match racing and thrill the crowds with 1500 HP T/F bike performance. These four cylinder-inline motorcycles are supercharged, running close to 30 PSI of boost, with high concentrations of Nitromethane for fuel. They generate north of 1500 horsepower to move 1,000 pounds of drag bike, 1320’ in close to five and a half seconds at speeds in excess of 260 MPH. Dave Vantine, Larry McBride Another record setting performance was presented to the fans by Top Fuel Harley racer Bobby Malloy. Bobby delivered a 6.243 @ 229 MPH for the #1 qualifying position. His elapsed time of 6.243 is a new VMP track record for Top Fuel Motorcycles. Bobby advanced to the semi-finals in TFH and was shut-off at the starting line for a leak. N.C. racer Tii Tharpe went on to win the event in the final round over Billy Jackson.
NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles (PSM) were not out-done by the fuel bikes. Popular PSM racer Angie Smith impressed the fans with her #1 qualifying effort of 6.756 @ 201.37 MPH. Her numbers now stand as new track records for ET and MPH at Virginia Motorsports Park. In PSM competition. Angie Smith advanced to the second round of eliminations, where she was defeated by Eddie Krawiec, who motored on to victory that round after Angie slowed due to mechanical misfortune. Her husband, Matt Smith went on to win the event with a 6.84 @ 198 MPH, defeating a quicker Steve Johnson, 6.78 @ 198, by virtue of a hole-shot: Matt Smith RT (.048) Steve Johnson RT (.110). DOUG COBY ROCKETS TO VICTORY By SOUZA MEDIA RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Driving for Tommy Baldwin Racing, Doug Coby was the dominant force on Saturday night, May 14, at Riverhead Raceway. Coby rocketed to his third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win in the last four races at the New York bullring, this time, driving the No. 7NY for the Baldwin family. It was a special win for the sixtime series champion, who got the call to drive the car just five days prior to race day. Jimmy

scheduled to drive the car for Baldwin – but a family emergency kept him from competing in the Miller Lite 200. Baldwin called Coby on Tuesday and asked him to drive the car, with Blewett’s blessing, and the deal was done. Coby was third in practice and Mayhew Tools qualifying was canceled due to weather, lining him up third for the green flag. The Milford, Connecticut native took the lead early and held off Patrick Emerling on a green-white-checkered restart to pick up the win. The victory was the 32nd career for Coby, pulling him back into a tie with three-time champion Justin Bonsignore for fifth on the all-time list. “It feels awesome,” Coby said. “More important than winning, Kayla Blewett is home with her family, and that is what is most important. These guys just gave me a great car. I’m really happy to be here and really happy we got the race in. This place is so tough. It’s just surreal to get a call on Tuesday with a team I haven’t really even talked to that much and I’m happy to be able to showcase their equipment and their cars in victory lane for their team.” The win came in Coby’s first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour start of the season. Coby has plans to compete in multiple events during the second half of the year as part of a part-time schedule. DOIRON OUTLASTS KRUCZEK By JEFF BROWN for GRANITE STATE PRO STOCK SERIES LEE, N.H. – In the early stages of Saturday afternoon’s Granite State Derby at Lee USA Speedway, Joey Doiron seemed more likely to place than to win. But the first horse across the finish line is not always the fastest horse out of the gate. Doiron outdueled early leader Bryan Kruczek on a late restart, then held off Kruczek to post his first Granite State Pro Stock Series win of 2022 and the fifth of his career. “That was cool, you know, playing cat-and-mouse,” Doiron said, crediting Kruczek for a clean battle on his winning pass. The Berwick, Maine, veteran started third and was content to ride in the early laps, pacing himself behind Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. as Kruczek showed the way. Doiron slipped past Renfrew for second on lap 24, but Kruczek had already built a formidable lead from the pole position. A winner at Star Speedway two weeks ago, Kruczek and his team were late additions to the entry list. But Kruczek looked like nothing of the sort early on, backing up his speed in time trials with a fast race pace as the laps clicked by. With half the race in the books and Kruczek working lapped traffic, Doiron chipped away at Kruczek’s advantage, catching the leader as a spin brought out the first caution flag of the day at lap 69. On the restart, Doiron held firm on the outside, keeping Kruczek from getting away with the lead. Doiron nosed ahead and finally cleared Kruczek for the top spot a couple laps later. Kruczek settled back into second, with Brandon Barker getting past Renfrew for third. In the final stages, Corey Bubar spun while battling for fourth, handing Kruczek an opportunity to make it two-for-two in his GSPSS appearances this year. But Doiron was quick off the restart, distancing himself instantly from the battle for second place. Already a GSPSS winner at Lee in 2019, Doiron led the final 15-lap sprint to become the fifth driver with two series wins at “New Hampshire’s Center of Speed.” Kruczek held on for second, unable to find anything in the closing laps to run down Doiron. Barker, a two-time GSPSS Lee winner in 2018 and 2019, was third at the stripe in Archie St. Hilaire’s No. 32 entry. Jimmy Renfrew Jr. finished fourth, his fourth GSPSS top-five finish at Lee. Nick Cusack was the best-finishing series rookie in fifth. Shaking off two bad races to open the season, Jeremy Sorel matched his best series performance with a strong sixth-place run. Ryan Green was
seventh ahead of Dylan Estrella. Luke Hinkley, the point leader entering the evening, ended his streak of second-place performances by finishing ninth. And in his GSPSS debut, Isaac Bevin ended the afternoon in tenth, driving back from a late-race spin. Doiron’s win moves him to the top of the point standings only three races into the season. The 2019 GSPSS champion is poised to become only the second driver to win multiple championships in the series’ twelve-year history. The next race on the GSPSS calendar is at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H. on June 18, where the series will pair for a second consecutive event with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Details on tickets and scheduling for the Duel At The Dog 200 weekend are available at JDVProductions.com. What’s On Your Shelf? What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.

MUSCLE & CLASSIC CAR MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
Etch, now an outlaw, due to government vehicle regulations and restrictions, is completely fed up with these laws forcing American muscle cars, classic cars and trucks, hot rods, rat rods and specialty vehicles enthusiasts to permanently park their rides or face strict punishments, high fines, vehicle destruction and even prison time if caught driving them on streets, roads and highways across the USA. He drives his wanted GTO down backroads through Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts always on the lookout for law enforcement vehicles and sporadic federal government agency personnel deployment at gas stations. These same gas stations now going belly up due to high fuel prices and the government forcing every American citizen to purchase
and drive electric powered vehicles instead of their Detroit manufactured muscle cars and classic rides. The government sold America a trunk full of lies that included skyrocketed gas and oil prices blaming the war in Ukraine and oil companies trying to keep up with demands. The entire country was on lockdown for the past two years and these same prices were substantially lower during that timeline. As soon as American citizens leave the shelter of their homes in 2022 and try to return to a normal life a whole new evil shows itself and nobody is doing anything in Washington but talking about what they want to do to help struggling families survive. Oil company executives see the writing on the wall and know very well that oil and vehicle gasoline will one day be obsolete and

unnecessary. Calling this a high cost of living atmosphere is an understatement. Talk. That’s all it ever is: talk. Never results. Etch drives past electric vehicles on the road and mats the gas pedal pushing the dual exhaust loud and proud in OUTLAW’s wake. Each time, the GTO nose lifts off the blacktop and launches down the road. He can see some of the drivers reaching for their cell phones in his rear view and door mirrors knowing damn well that they are reporting him to the police.
