Randolph looks into his rearview mirror and slams onto his brake pedal avoiding contact with the vehicles stopped behind his Silverado. “So, this is how you wanna play the game hunh?” Randolph steps out of his truck and stares down the drivers behind the wheel of both vehicles blocking his driveway so he cannot exit onto the street. “Hey, punks! Move ‘em, or lose ‘em!” The punks just sit in their vehicles smiling at Randolph standing in his driveway next to his Chevy Silverado. “Okay! If that’s how you want to play this game, I’m in!” Randolph jumps back up into his lifted Chevy truck and lays on the gas pedal. The loud dual exhaust system can be heard blocks away. Randolph puts the shifter in reverse and presses down on the gas pedal. The trucks rear tires begin to spin and sends smoke out into the street covering both vehicles stopped at the end of his driveway. The drivers and passengers begin to cough and can hardly see a thing around them. Once the smoke clears, the closest vehicle driver to Randolph’s driveway can start to see again and sees the tailgate and chrome rear bumper of the big Chevy truck inches from his face in the drivers window. “Damn, Man!” The driver immediately backs up his car and watches as Randolph backs his Chevy truck out onto the street between his vehicle and his punk buddy’s vehicle. ‘ “You are crazy fool!” Yells, one of the punks from inside his vehicle at Randolph pulling away and headed down his street towards the nearest hardware store. Both vehicles start to follow him. Randolph keeps his eyes on the road in front of him and also on the rearview mirror watching what the drug dealing punks will do next. He eventually arrives at the hardware store and is greeted in the parking lot by a couple of his old neighborhood friends walking into the local diner in the same plaza. Randolph exits his truck and watches as the two punk filled vehicles slowly drive past him on the street in front of the plaza parking lot. The passenger in the second vehicle holds a gun outside the rear passenger window making sure that Randolph and his two friends see it in his hand. Randolph just smiles and proceeds to walk into the diner with his friends.

“What was that all about Randy?” asks his friend, Adam. “Damned punks think they rule every neighborhood they set up shop in,” said, Randolph. “Dealing drugs right under everybody’s noses and nobody does anything about it.” Randolph and his two friends sit down at a diner window table so they can keep an eye out on their parked vehicles. “What will it be today fellas?” asks, the waitress. “Three cheeseburgers, fries and iced coffees for here,” said, Randolph. His friends look at him with surprised expressions on their faces. “You ordering for all of us now Captain?” asks, Adam. “We aren’t in the military anymore and we eat whatever we want.” The waitress asks again, “what would they would like to order?” Adam replies, “Ummm, we will have what he ordered.” Waitress laughs, “That’s what I thought.” To be continued...

Showcasing Boston ED YESSAIAN

If there’s one thing that says “Spring is Coming”, it’s the World of Wheels show in Boston. It’s a time for everyone to dust off their rides, pull themselves out of their winter slump, and put forth their best automotive efforts

to deliver some of the best rides that this area has to offer. Each vehicle is hand selected by Rick Finamore, who took over the event a few years ago, and breathed new life into this show. Rick’s focus on the quality of the builds and the constant rotation of new feature cars eliminated the stale reputation that the show fell into prior to his influence. Additional improvements to the event were selecting vendors that truly benefitted automotive fans and being much stricter on the club displays which were expected to select their highest quality vehicles for display. As always I had my favorite displays with the following few standing out from the crowd...

CINCOTTI TILEIf there’s one guy that puts on a spectacular display year after year, it’s Nick Cincotti. Cincotti has roughly a two dozen vehicles ranging from Muscle cars, to trucks, mini bikes to four wheelers, Rat-Rods, and then some. His displays are constantly rotated year to year and he excels at enthusiastically sharing his passion. This year he brought his 66 Chevelle, 53 F100 pickup, and a handful of unique mini-rides. BUGATTI’S La Voitu MIKE GALLO Say hello to Bugatti’s newest creation, the BUGATTI La Voiture Noire.

The new car has the same nearly 1,500 horsepower, 16-cylinder engine as the $3 million Bugatti Chiron on which it’s based. And has quad turbos. This French luxury car has outdone itself once again.

This Supercar costs $19,000,000 and it is designed to pay homage to the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic of the 1930s. Only four of those cars were made and today they are among the most valuable cars in the world as they can be worth more than $50,000,000.

Unfortunately Bugatti only made one of these cars and it’s already been sold to a mystery buyer who the company simply describes as a Bugatti enthusiast. Bugatti rolled out the one-off Supercar to celebrate the brand’s 110th anniversary.

The meaning of La Voiture Noire is simply “the black car”.

The all black Bugatti La Voiture Noire combines the comfort of a luxury limousine and the power of a hyper sports car according to the company. The Supercar also has a hand-built carbon fiber body.

The Type 57 SC Atlantic was designed by Jean Bugatti, son of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti at a time when the bodies for most high-end cars were created by separate body makers rather than the automobile companies themselves. Jean Bugatti designed some of the most beautiful cars ever seen for his father’s firm.

This month we thought we’d take a look at some common “truths” about cars that many people still believe are true but actually aren’t. They’re not necessarily harming your car, but many of them are costing you money.

mileage. However, both Mythbusters and a 2004 study by GM and SAE found that turning on the air conditioner at medium power uses more fuel than driving with the windows down. Consumer Reports testing also came to the same conclusion, although they recommend using the AC anyway to help keep the driver alert and comfortable.

PREMIUM GAS IS BETTER FOR YOUR CAR Unless your car requires premium fuel, it’s a waste of money to use the expensive stuff. High octane gas is necessary for many high-performance cars. They have high compression motors that require the high-octane fuel. The rest will see no benefit at all from premium gas. Spending more for gas with “cleaning agents” is also not worth it. The U.S. government requires all gasoline sold here to be of a certain quality, which includes detergents. More cleaning agents are just a gimmick to sell more gas. That also means you don’t have to worry about buying off-brand gas, either. All gasoline has to meet the same quality standards.

YOU SHOULD “TOP OFF” THE TANK WHEN GASSING UP There is a reason gas pumps stop automatically when your tank is full. If you pull the handle a few more times to make sure you tank is as full as possible, the excess fuel will eventually spill into the charcoal canister. Gradually it will fail, and fixing it is quite costly – up to $1,500. You will also be paying for fuel that actually goes back into the station’s storage tank. Most stations nowadays have a vapor recovery system that detects when the gas tank is full and pumps the excess fuel back into the storage tank.

GET YOUR OIL CHANGED EVERY 3,000 MILES

MORE FUEL IS WASTED WHEN A CAR IS TURNED ON THAN WHEN IT IDLES

Back in the day, engine oil simply didn’t last long. Today’s oils are synthetic and engineered to last much longer. Modern cars with modern oil can go up to 10,000 before needing an oil change, depending on what kind of car you have and how you drive. Changing the oil every 3,000 miles won’t harm your car, but it’s an unnecessary expense. It’s also bad for the environment, as perfectly good oil gets discarded for no reason. Check your owner’s manual and change your oil at the recommended intervals, which will be around 7,500 for most manufacturers. But make sure you do it at the recommended intervals. As your oil gets dirtier, it will stop lubricating, and your engine will wear and fail.

When most cars depended on carburetors to blend fuel and air for use by the engine, this was true. However, modern fuel injection—which is used by most cars now operating on the road—allows ignition to occur without having to expend any more fuel than is required to keep a car idling. So, if you really want to save on fuel costs, consider turning off your engine whenever your automobile is going to be remaining motionless for more than about 30 seconds. In fact, many new cars now offer that as an option so the engine automatically shuts off at stoplights and starts instantly when you hit the gas.

TUNE-UPS ARE NECESSARY Older cars needed work on various parts to stay running properly, and older component designs and analog parts were incapable of staying properly tuned after long use. Modern cars, though, built with computers and sensors, are able to constantly adjust for any changes and monitor many parts of the vehicle. Newer cars only need replacement of wear parts, so tune-ups (beyond checking out belts, fluids, etc., every 50,000 miles or so) really aren’t necessary.

BIGGER IS SAFER Today, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups are becoming the vehicles of choice for many drivers all around the world. One reason for their popularity is their perceived safety over smaller vehicles. But larger vehicles are not inherently safer. The IIHS did a series of tests on the most popular pickups on the market in 2016. Only one pickup, the F-150, got a good overall safety rating, while the others received only acceptable or marginal ratings. Meanwhile, two minicars were awarded Top Safety Pick status by the IIHS, while only one full-size pickup did.

RUNNING THE AIR CONDITIONER GIVES BETTER FUEL ECONOMY THAN OPENING THE WINDOWS It was thought that the open windows would create drag on the car, so keeping the windows closed and using the AC would give you better gas

COLD ENGINES NEED TO BE WARMED BEFORE DRIVING While it’s true that engines function at a lower efficiency when they’re cold, letting them idle to “warm up” is counterproductive. An idling engine is running at its ‘lowest’ power output, which means that it is generating the lowest amount of heat possible while still operating. If you want your engine to warm up fast (not to mention the other parts of your car), the best thing you can do is drive it.

YOU DON’T NEED SNOW TIRES IF YOU HAVE 4WD OR AWD So many people seem to believe they don’t need winter tires as long they drive a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will help with acceleration in snowy conditions, but they don’t provide any advantage with breaking or cornering. You won’t get the same traction with all seasons or summer tires compared to winter tires. So far safest winter driving, use a good snow tire on your 4wd or AWD vehicle. TIM ALLEN’S ‘67 CAT Edited By ROB MAY

Continuing from the April issue, the Blue Mercury theme continues in Hartselle, Alabama with Tim Allen’s Light Aqua 1967 Mercury Cougar story. Tim Allen has been married to Renada for 31 years, and they have two sons – TJ and Ben along with a grand-daughter- Tailyn. Tim’s first car was a ‘74 Maverick, and he cut grass to buy it at 15 years old (1980). He tells us his Cat story. “My two good friends, Tim and Greg Miller (brothers), have Cougars – ’67, ’68, and ‘69. For the last two years, they had told me about a Mercury Cougar for sale. They would see the owner at shows; sometimes it was for sale, other times not. Tim eventually got an address. He sent me some pics around the end of September of last year. The next Sunday morning we went to look at it. First thing the owner said was ‘you caught me on the right day, I’m ready to sell’. We went to the barn where the Cat had been for more than 20 years. He pulled the cover off the Light Aqua ‘67 Cougar. I told him one of my sister’s friend in high school had a boyfriend with a Cougar the same color. He asked if she was a good looking blond, I replied yes. He said, ‘that’s my wife.’ It was the car I remembered from high school! We looked it over and found no rust in floor pans. Everything was there, plus a parts car. The brakes were locked up; but Tim Allen with his Light Aqua ‘67 Cougar with the help of a come-a-long, it was on the trailer to go home.” This 289 2V Ford powered Cougar was initially built in Dearborn. Now Tim was ready to put his Cat back on the road. “The only off day I have is Sundays to work on it.” All new brakes were installed, and the fuel system is next. “The motor runs, but may have to rebuild trans. Netherton’s auto parts in Decatur, AL a family owned old school parts house, had most of the parts and knowledge I needed to get it running and stopping. Tim Miller has been a big help to me with the restoration. I’m going for a late 70 early 80s street rod look.” Tim plans on having his Mercury ready for the road this Spring. “After I have it mechanically sound, it will be time for paint, Light Aqua!” Tim says he will drive his Cat often. “The most unique attribute is the color (Light Aqua outside and inside), and it’s like a time machine. My Mercury takes me back to my youth; working on a car all week preparing for Friday nights. Doing burnouts, racing, hanging out at parking lots, cruising and girls. It all revolved around your car. I enjoy still hanging with a lot of the same friends almost 40 years later. I have a lot of good memories, and looking forward to more.”

MODIFYING THE 2009 ZO6 CORVETTE MIKE GALLO

STOCK BASELINE DYNO NUMBERS

Well.. well… well I’m back! This month’s installment of “Modifying the 2009 ZO6 Corvette” has some baseline Dyno numbers. I recently decided to start modifying my ZO6 Corvette after some time of owning it and not doing anything to it. What I’m trying to accomplish is to make or get it as close to 500 rear-wheel horsepower with simple bolt ons and never taking a valve cover off this car. I recently went down to Precision Dyno at 40 Starline Way Unit 7 in Cranston, RI. I met for the first time the owner Dave McClain. He is a very knowledgeable guy and is very nice and reassured me that my car was in good hands. For the trip down there I also had a good friend of mine Ray Leathers accompany me. Incidentally Ray is really big in the racing community down here in Rhode Island and is also very knowledgeable with GM, Ford and many other brands of cars. With Ray behind the wheel while the car was on the dyno and Dave handling all the other chores I knew this was going to be an exciting night. After a brief warm-up on the dyno and bringing the car up to temperature and once everything was established that it was okay to proceed, we made around 3 pulls on the dyno. When all was said and done the car produced 452 rear-wheel horsepower and 443 foot pounds of

torque. This was with a standard correction on the Dynojet. Now, the car made this power - although it was running extremely rich - with a 10.0 air fuel ratio. And that is a bit off considering that a good air fuel ratio for a naturally aspirated car is around 12.5 to 1 or so. Obviously there is still a bit of power on the table with it being so rich. I was happy with the numbers that it produced considering the car is bone stock. We have decided that we are going to install a 160 thermostat and Ray Leathers is going to port the stock throttle body for the first round of modifications. After that Dave is going to work his magic with a tune and put the car back on the dyno to see what it produces in terms of power improvement. I will be documenting all of it within the pages of Motorhead magazine to share with you guys. After that I will be adding different bolt ons in my quest of 500 rear-wheel naturally aspirated horsepower. I have to tell you I am very excited and can’t wait to see the results. Street racing dominated many parts of this country in the 1930’s and 40’s. Particularly after Henry Ford produced the Flathead V8 Ford engine that was commonly installed in the lighter Roadsters used by the west coast World War II Veterans on the dry lakes of El Mirage, which was one step above street racing in

the world of safety. Today, street racing still exists but is extremely dangerous to a much higher degree, due to the fact of the increased power levels of the factory produced vehicles. Factoring in the violation cost results and insurance risks, most people have resorted to legalized drag strip/track racing. The accuracy of the actual racing amongst competitors has no comparison. Common bonds are made with the racing fraternity almost immediately at any event or practice session, along with learning curves and entertainment coexisting. But it’s the building of the vehicle, the process of innovative ideas and applying them. The variables that go with traction, temperature, the driver’s ability to control the vehicle in all aspects of the run make it a never ending chase, but when the win light comes on, it’s all worth it. An entry level driver with the desire to run the track can introduce one’s self to all these pluses with a factory stock family sedan and decide at that point if it’s for them. Once experienced, it’s usually never ending for most motorheads. It is highly recommended to talk to other drag race enthusiasts that have actually run, discussing how they started and be open for any suggestions. Also, a NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) rule book could be purchased or viewed online for the basics. Instructional videos and many publications are also available at local libraries and online. Once the assumed family stock sedan

gets boring making quarter mile passes, vehicle upgrades and/or changes of vehicles entirely will often provide faster E.T.’s (elapsed time) for the enthusiast. How to restore you By MIKE GALLO Have you ever walked outside and looked at your car and realized your headlights donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look as good as the rest of your vehicle?

Recently this happened to me. After I fully cleaned my car I noticed that my headlights were dull compared to the rest of the car. After looking into replacing lenses and the amount of work it would take to do so I figured why not give redoing them a shot. With that said

I got a few different supplies that I knew I would need. I started off with masking around the headlights with tape so as not to damage the surrounding paint. After that was done I started off wet

sanding the headlights with 400 grit sandpaperâ&#x20AC;Ś.immediately I could see all sorts of residue coming off the headlights. After that I proceeded to sand with 600, 800, 1200, 1500 and finally 2000 grit sandpaper. The headlights were starting to look a little bit

better. Now I decided I would buff them lightly with some light compound and a wool pad on a buffer. After doing so the results were better than what I started off with, but not quite what I wanted. So I decided to re-wet sand the headlights with 2000 grit sandpaper and clean them off with

rubbing alcohol. I then covered the car with a plastic sheet and picked up an automotive grade clear coat in a can at a local autobody paint store. I sprayed a light coat of the clear coat over the headlights and waited 20 minutes and then recleared them again. After that I proceeded

to spray two more coats of clear on the headlights. After letting them dry overnight I came outside and wet sanded them again lightly with 2500 grit sandpaper and buffed them once more. The results were amazing… the headlights now looked as if they were brand new - much to my surprise.

Etch proceeds onto the highway and gradually begins to push the GTO harder and harder as if acting in desperation. The Pontiac GTO is now redlined with nothing but open highway in front of it. Etch sees an exit ramp sign reading, [exit next two miles]. He plans on taking that exit and removing himself from his current situation and hopefully try and make his way back home, or to some place he can access sanctuary from the law. The exit ramp sign is now within eye sight and Etch knows that he needs to find sanctuary somewhere out of view from pretty much anyone that knows the difference between a new car, or a classic muscle car, cruising down the highway, or any roadway for that matter. Taking the exit, he looks and sees empty roadways. He looks down the open highway and there is not one single vehicle traveling in either direction. The highway is completely

empty. He is now at the end of the exit ramp leading to a backroad in a rural country community about fifty miles from his own home and garages. “What in the hell is going on?” Etch crawls his GTO onto the backroad and slowly starts heading towards his own community about an hour, to an hour and half away, if he continues to drive the posted speed limits. The backroad is void of any other vehicle. It’s as if Etch and his wanted GTO are the only person and vehicle left on the planet. But, Etch knows that is far from the case. Even though it feels that way. Etch continues driving down the empty back country roads and gets a sense of complete loneliness as he keeps glancing back into his rearview mirror and back again, out of his vehicle windshield. It begins to drizzle. Etch turns on his lights and windshield wipers thinking the reason why the roads are deserted may be

because of some oncoming weather conditions that he may not fully be aware of. He hasn’t really had much time to catch up on current events in the news, other than the fact that he is the news, or any weather reports. The rains start to become much more aggressive and it is becoming harder to see out of his windshield or any other window. His windshield wipers are factory wipers and not meant for heavy rain driving. Etch tries to find the news and weather on his car radio but all he is getting is a lot of static. A few moments later, it begins to hail as the skies turn black as night. It is the middle of the day.

Mercury Capri cars are not often seen out on the road anymore. In Merrimack, NH, we find 51 year-old Michael Lamoureux Sr.’s 1983 Capri RS. One constant in his family is the Mercury. “My wife, Jessica, and I brought the Capri to our wedding; our first son, Michael Jr., rode home from the hospital in the Capri; our daughter, Elizabeth, learned to drive with the Capri; and our youngest son, Christopher drove the Capri to his high school prom.” In the summer of 1990, Michael set out to buy a daily driver powered by a 5.0L engine. The Capri was found at a dealership. “I immediately pulled in and asked, ‘tell me more about this car’. The salesman was quick to point out that it was a little bit faster than the 5.0 Mustang… it had a performance handling package, Recaro seats, RS trim, a wing, and a hood

scoop. I also noticed the gauges were different, a little bit nicer. It had 60k miles on it and was in excellent condition.” By sunset that day, the Capri was at Michael’s home.

Southern New England Fire Apparatus Association The 2015 North East Auto Show

2019 Tri-State Firefighters Meet The Southern New England Fire Apparatus Association (SNEFAA) will be hosting their 3rd Annual Tri-State Firefighters Meet and Apparatus Show

on Sunday, May 19, 2019. We are honored this year to have our Show sponsored by Mark Hooper of Specialty Vehicles, Inc. of Plainville, MA, and Greenwood Emergency Vehicles of North Attleborough, MA, and Michael Boynton, Owner of MassFireTrucks.com. The show will feature a display of privately owned antique and modern-day in-service fire apparatus from MA, CT, RI, and several other states – all are welcome. The show will run from 9:00am – 3:00pm at Memorial Beach Park, Webster, Massachusetts on the shores of Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, and admission is FREE. As part of the show, several fire trucks will be pumping at the beach area and there will be a vehicle extrication demonstration. A Smoke House will be on site for fire safety education that spectators will be able to walk through. There will be a controlled “live burn” to demonstrate how sprinklers save lives. Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog will be on hand for the kids and a DJ will be providing musical entertainment. Also, Mike Higgins of Magic Gardens will sculpt two wooden carvings with chainsaws on site to be raffled that day. The first will be an antique fire truck and the second will be a lighthouse.
