LEE USA SPEEDWAY GRANITE STATE DERBY PART OF BUSY MONTH OF MAY FOR NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR

On Saturday, May 21, the inaugural Granite State Derby at Lee USA Speedway – promoted by JDV Productions – will take place right in the thick of a busy month of May for Whelen Modified Tour teams. The series will visit Riverhead Raceway on May 14, Lee on May 21 and Jennerstown Speedway on May 28. The final two events in the month (Lee and Jennerstown) are events promoted by the JDV group. The Whelen Modified Tour Granite State Derby 175 will be one of the most anticipated races of the 16-event schedule for the 2022 season, especially due to the strategy that is sure to be a factor. Lee is known for its abrasive surface that eats up Hoosier racing rubber, which will produce quite the exciting battle. Some will pit early for tires and try to hang on out front late, while others will blast their fresh tires on in the final stages and try to make their way through the field. The visit is the first time since 1988 that the Whelen Modified Tour competes at the New Hampshire track. In five previous events, five different drivers went to Victory Lane. “Lee USA Speedway produces some of the best racing in New England,” Josh
Vanada, owner of JDV Productions, said. “The track has so much character and it pushes drivers to their limit, while they try to not step over the line, and have equipment left to battle for the win at the end. With all of the different divisions racing during the day, and the Whelen Modified Tour headlining the show, race fans should have this one marked on their calendar.”
The race is the first of three in the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup (WGSSTC) for the 2022 season. Through a partnership between JDV Productions and Whelen Engineering, the bonus program for the WGSSTC includes over $15,000 in posted awards, including $5,000 to the car owner of the driver who scores the most points combined over the three races. Outside of points from each event, multiple bonuses are also on the line at each specific race. The Invader Bonus, Hard Charger Bonus, Lap Leader Bonus and Consistency Bonus will all be offered. Between the four of them, an additional $2,500 is on the line. For $200 per race, the Challenger Bonus will be paid to the highest finishing driver in each event who has competed in less than 50% of the races on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in the past two seasons. The Hard Charger Bonus, also for $200 per race, will be awarded to the driver who improves the most positions from their starting to finishing position.

The Lap Leader Bonus will be set for $500, distributed to the driver who leads the most total laps over the three events. The Consistency Bonus, offered to the driver who scores the lowest average finish across the three races, will earn $800. Both the Lap Leader Bonus and the Consistency Bonus will be paid out following the final of the three races. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour major contenders for the race will be those who have set themselves as favorites going into the year. Three-time champion Justin Bonsignore, Patrick Emerling, Eric Goodale, Jon McKennedy, Tommy Catalano and others should be up near the front of the field. Some of the contenders have also run previous laps at Lee in other TourType Modified races, which may give them a slight edge. Multiple drivers who are not Whelen Modified Tour regulars are also planning on running. Former Seekonk Speedway Legends Cars champion and Pro Stock and Late Model winner Jake Johnson will be competing in the famed “Ole Blue” No. 3 machine in his second Tour start. Names like Jacob Perry and Steven Dickey are also planning on competing. Perry picked up a Tour-Type Modified win at Lee last year and should have enough experience on his side to hit the ground running right from lap one. Advance tickets are now available at JDVProductions.com. General admission tickets for the event are $40 per person. Fans can also purchase exclusive passes to the JDV Experience – which will include preferred inside seating in turn one. The Experience also includes a private autograph session with NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers, an inspection tour in the pits, a $10 coupon towards the Lee USA Speedway concessions, two free beer vouchers and a JDV Experience hat. This exclusive opportunity is available for $150 per person. The race day schedule for Lee includes the start of practice just after 12 p.m. for house divisions. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour roar will take to the track from 1:40-2:40 p.m. for final practice. Qualifying heat races will begin just after. ED DAY 2022 Charity Challenge Drag Racing
XANDER YESSAIAN The Drag Racing phenomenon known as ED DAY celebrated its 17th year in 2022. However, the ongoing joke for the past five years has been multiple people asking my Dad (Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian) when he is going to pass the torch and accept the fact that the people want it renamed to Xander Day. GABE BROWN DOMINATES AT CLAREMONT, OPENS GRANITE STATE PRO STOCK SEASON IN VICTORY LANE

The 2022 Granite State Pro Stock Series season opened a lot like the 2021 season closed – with an exuberant Gabe Brown in victory lane at Claremont Motorsports Park.
Fast qualifier Joey Doiron, the 2019 GSPSS champion, finished third in his first race of the season.
The reigning GSPSS champion made the most of a last-minute trip to the series’ home track, dominating Sunday’s fendered half of the Key Chevrolet Buick GMC of Newport Presents the Twin 100s to kick off the 75th year of racing at the third-mile New Hampshire oval. Brown’s victory capped off a long and busy week for the nineteen-year-old. A crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last Sunday left the nineteen-year-old scrambling to rebuild a heavily-damaged race car. Brown and his team got the car together just in time to head south to Connecticut for a race Saturday. A third-place finish with a clean car not only justified Brown’s team’s hard work, but opened the door for the trip to Claremont. The Center Conway, N.H., racer swept both GSPSS races at the track in 2021. His three straight wins at Claremont not only tie DJ Shaw and Ray Christian III for the most GSPSS wins there, but also match Christian’s own threepeat in 2019 and 2020. Luke Hinkley, the local favorite, was a bridesmaid once again, finishing second at his home track for the fifth time in GSPSS competition. Hinkley, still searching for his first career GSPSS win, finished in Brown’s tire tracks last October, his best result of the year.

BUILT NOT BOUGHT

This is a series of articles that will be looking at cars that are built not bought. Simply said people who built their cars themselves with friends and family. Nothing wrong with buying an already built car turnkey. I have much respect for any Motorhead! If you out there having fun, riding in a car that is just cool to me. For myself, I can’t stop looking with amazement at the caliber of cars that are built in someone’s garage or under a lean-to. In the up-and-coming articles you will see jaw dropping cars that were built by their owners, with their own hands, sweat and tears. Some will have close friends or family helping them, guiding them or maybe even painting it for them. The bottom line is that they took the time to build their car, their time and long hours, to get it done.

Article 3 is about a couple that eat sleep and breath MOPARS. Yep, I said the dark side Mopar. Ronnie Santucci and his girlfriend Sara Lawson, a couple that have been together for 14 years. How cool is that, she is always there to support him in any way she can. Sara has her own business, Lawson Graphics. You will see this car on the streets a lot in the Worcester County area. Anything to do with drag racing, these two will be there supporting it. They drive the wheels off this car. This is not a trailer queen, they drive this daily when weather permits, taking vacations to New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Newport, and many other destinations. Ronnie has had the car since he was 14 years old. He pulled it from his Uncle John’s backyard. There were weeds as tall as the roof surrounding it, small trees and grass growing on the inside,

with another friend of ours, Fred Simmons and his father from SMG Motoring who raced their Camaro all week. Sara said, “it was an experience of a lifetime, seeing all the race cars, traveling to different destinations, seeing the little towns, those memories will remain with us forever. While we were at Drag Week there was some talk that Tom Bailey was thinking about doing his own drag and drive event in Florida. As soon as we heard it was a go, we wanted in”. They signed up for Sick Week and thankfully got in. Ronnie and Sara say Sick Week truly was “sick”! It focused on destinations, like going to the Don Garlits Museum, driving by the Kennedy Space Center, and cruising up Daytona Beach, and spending more time with other racers. It was a little over 800 miles total, over the span of 5 days, racing at Bradenton FL, Orlando Speed World FL (rained out), Gainesville FL, South Georgia Motorsports GA, then back to Bradenton FL. While they weren’t there to win or break records, the goal was to complete the event and finish the week with a 9 second average, which they did! They completed the event without any major issues and averaged a 9.97. “The Duster really was kind of made for these events, and we are excited to be able to participate in them!” Fig. 5-7 A little about both events. Drag Week & Sick Week are Drag and Drive events that test the endurance or your street able race car. Racing every day at a track with requirements and rules depending on your class, then driving 100-300+ miles per day to the next track. With both events you are not allowed to have a “chase vehicle”, or someone towing your trailer, or additional pit crew behind
or following you. You have the option to tow your own mini trailer (other requirements need to be met for the mini trailer) behind your race car or carry what you need within your race vehicle. Ronnie and his father built the mini trailer they towed behind the Duster for both events. It

About the car: it has gone through a lot of changes over the tears, different motors, and drivelines but in the end, the car has a strong 416-stroker (340 based, small block). That was just enough for Ronnie, Pro Charger Gear Vendors Trans and Holley EFI. The set up was not kind to them. It ran well but it had a lot more in it. They rented the track and got the car dialed in before HOT ROD Drag Week. Figure 8-10. I was a Mopar fan years ago. It is 2 to 3 times more expensive to build a Mopar. The financial burden did not stop these two. There are no corners cut with this car. This, in my book, is in my top ten Mopar to date. Simply because how far this car has come. The transformation that this car inspires me personally. This car will never be sold.

JIM WEICHERDING Sadly, we recently lost a true Motorhead enthusiast in a vehicle crash. David Lusignan was an avid automotive enthusiast and owned a beautiful 1997 Chevy Camaro Z28 he named “NASTYZ”. David was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of the William M. Davies Career and Technical School, Class of 2008 where he excelled in their automotive program. He was employed at Med-Tech Ambulance Service for several years, transporting patients to appointments and medical evaluations at a variety of facilities across the state of Rhode Island. David loved drag racing “NASTYZ” at Seekonk Speedway and New England Dragway and did very well against the competition. David had a big heart and everyone that knew him thought the world of him. He wasn’t just a guy with a cool car that showed up at automotive events and drag races. He was well liked and respected and enjoyed the car show scene with his friends. By ROB MAY and IRVIN MELENDEZ Old Fords and Old Mercury mix well in the Central California Mercury Club CCMC. Recently two late 70s cars joined – a Monarch and Granada. 2022 marks the 45th Anniversary of this 1977 Ford Granada Ghia featured here. Twenty-Six-year-old Irvin Melendez, from Oxnard, California, owns this fine example of the platform started with the 1960 Ford Falcon. Currently working as a Manager at Target, Irvin is the youngest of three. “There’s my twin sisters Ana and Vanessa Melendez and my mother and father Ramiro and Lucita Melendez.” “When my dad, Ramiro Melendez came to the United States, my now Ford Granada was his first car when he got here to the United States in 1984.” He bought it off the street for $700 in 1987. “It was our family car until 1998, when the radiator broke. Instead of getting it fixed, my father bought a 1978 Ford LTD station wagon so we could fit our family of 5 comfortably and stuck the Granada in our garage where it sat for 17 years. As the years passed, my dad wanted to junk the car; however, I would always tell him not to, that one day I would pull it out of the garage and fix her up.” While Irvin was attending Ventura College, he was driving his sister’s 95 Altima that would overheat at least once or twice a month leading to replacing the radiator twice one year. “The semester I graduated from college; I was exhausted of having to deal with the Altima breaking down. I had saved up $7k from financial aid, and I had two options: test my luck by buying a used car or fixing up the Ford Granada.” One Sunday morning, while his dad was away at work, Irvin awoke bright and early. He removed all the junk that was on top of the Granada. “I grabbed my dad’s truck and pulled the Ford out of the garage. When my dad got home, he was so surprised seeing the car sitting outside. The next day I towed the car to our local mechanics, Zavalas Auto Mechanics.” They cleared out all the lines, put in a new gas tank and radiator, gave the engine a tune up. The Granada became road worthy again after a couple week at shop. “The same day I picked her up, I drove her over to my uncle’s auto body shop, Luis’s Auto Body.” There, the car was stripped down, all the old paint sanded off, and painted a Ford Factory paint Rio Red with a white top. “Once painted, I had my dad’s coworker, who was starting his reupholstery business, do the interior.” He re-did the seats, from blue to red with white tubing.
other weekend. His ’77 Ford has been to a hand full of shows, most notably, the 2019 Hot Wheels legends show over in Los Angeles. While not (yet) winning any awards, it is always a head turner. “My car and I also belong to the Ventura Classics Car Club. Besides this being my father’s first car, it is a very unique car that you don’t see at all, not even at car shows. When you go to a car show, you see your typical Impalas, Bel Airs, Mustangs, and Camaros. I bring a twist to these shows and give spectators a blast from the past.”
Unique features include the elegant corner light and hidden gas tank in the rear center of the car behind a panel and its bench seats. The Granada has its original V8 302 with 3-speed C4 automatic transmission. The EGR valve is deleted, and the original air cleaner replaced with an Edelbrock air cleaner. “After it was brought back to life by Zavalas Auto Mechanics, I have done most mechanical work myself, learning through YouTube videos or the help of friends.” In 2019, the trunk was redone by Breakers Stereo and Performance, where they put in two 12 inch AudioMobile subs, a 4channel amp and a sub. By John Conti Both the ‘73 Z28 and the driver are truly survivors to the max. Dave “Bun” Cannata bought his brand new 1973 Z28 from Scuncio Chevrolet on Rt. 44 in Smithfield, from the well-known (at the time) Bob Johnson, who was the man to see for high performance Chevys at the well-stocked dealership. Good friend Dennis Coffey and Dave went down to look at the twenty-one Z28s lined up along the back fence and four days later, Dave got a call from Bob telling him there were only seven left and if he wanted one, to get down there quickly. A midnight green, white striped Camaro was just coming out of prep and being moved into the showroom when they arrived, and Dave was in love. Continued on Page 38

BACK WHERE SHE BELONGS By SHANNON McCAFFREY This is the story of a 56-year-old car owned by 3 different members of my family over the past 41 years. This story also includes a bit of a history lesson. In 1981 I was 7 years old when my uncle bought a 1966 Mustang Fastback. The car was yellow, although the original color was candy apple red. It would be many years before we learned why the car was painted yellow. When my uncle had the car repainted back to its original color, I asked him if one day I could have the car, and he said “maybe.” After a few seasons in the mountains of New Hampshire, my uncle realized he really needed a truck as his daily driver, and so the Mustang sat on his property…outside, uncovered, and exposed to the elements of the White Mountains … for 14 years. Fast forward to 1995 and in attempts to restore the vehicle back to life, my father bought the car from his younger brother. My Dad and my younger brother drove to my uncle’s house in New Hampshire and U-hauled the car back to Rhode Island where a restoration period would begin. My Dad did a lot of research on the history of the car…decoding the DSO code, identifying the plant where the car was built (San Jose, CA), the date the car was ‘born’, its unique features (i.e. factory-installed AC), and even locating the car dealership that received the car from the plant. The car had been driven by an executive before being transferred to another dealership and offered for sale to the public. My Dad found the name of the first owner whose address was listed in California. Knowing this was a longshot, he wrote a letter hoping for any pic44| Motorhead Magazine - May 2022

tures of the car or other details that could be provided. To my Dad’s surprise, he received a reply from the daughter of the owner. She explained her father bought the car for her when she was 17 and had it painted yellow. Mystery #1 solved!! She was kind enough to provide several years of original California registrations, the first one dated March 1975. Fun fact…in 1975 the State of California charged $3.00 for a passenger vehicle registration. She also included a story of how she drove the car to a high school basketball game where she was a cheerleader, but when she got out of the game, she saw that someone had backed into the trunk and damaged the key lock. Her father swapped out the key lock, and to this day that same replacement lock is still intact and explains why the key needs to be jiggled at just the right angle to open the trunk. Mystery #2 solved!! My Dad was eager to begin the restoration and had a very comprehensive plan of what needed to be done. Being handy, knowledgeable, and a “motorhead” all his life, he would tackle what he could do first. Work began immediately, and over time my Dad would drive the car just enough to shake off the cobwebs. As the saying goes, ‘life happened’, and his interest and motivation slipped away, and after one last drive, the car went into yet another hibernation period. This time for 25 years, but at least now it was protected in a garage.

Pete turned to me and said, “’I’m going to make you an offer you can’t refuse.” His offer was to provide space in his garage where he would help Derek and I become more knowledgeable and motivated to get this car back on the road. This was amazing! I had just met this man a week ago, but I immediately accepted his generous offer. We instantly made arrangements for the car to be delivered to his garage (which ironically was less than 1 mile away). During that first year Derek and I became intensely familiar with the car, and we completed what work we could do on our own in Pete’s garage. Full disclosure, I helped where I could and learned as much as I could, but Derek’s knowledge and expertise was vital in getting to this point and undoubtedly a unique project for us to take on togeth-
During those 25 hibernation years, my Dad received several unsolicited ‘AS-IS’ offers to purchase the car, but he passed on all of them. More recently, I made several attempts to start a conversation with my Dad about selling the car to me. The unsuccessful talks always ended with him saying, “I’ll think about it.” Then on one glorious Sunday morning during breakfast my Dad gave me his ‘number’ (to sell the car to me). We shook hands on it, and then finished our breakfast. The Mustang’s family ownership was about to change for the third and final time! In February of 2020 I officially became the owner of this car which had been an integral part of my family for most of my life. And now I needed to figure out a priority list of how to get this car back on the

We were now at the point where a classic car restoration expert was needed to help get the car back on the road. Without hesitation, Pete suggested Conti’s Auto Service & Motorsports. John Conti and his team went through the car with a fine-toothed comb to come up
road. A few weeks after I purchased the car, my boyfriend, Derek, and I were driving in our town and saw a 1968 Mustang Fastback in a driveway with a For Sale sign in the window. Derek also noticed the large two-story garage in the backyard. He suggested I write a note to the owner explaining my need of direction to restore my car in hopes he would have recommendations of how I should start such a list. The next day I taped my handwritten note to the front door of the house. That same night I got a call from Pete, the owner of the ’68, who asked if he could see the car for himself. We met later that week at the garage the ’66 had called home for the past 25 years. Pete brought along one his friends who he states is even more of a Mustang aficionado than himself. Their first order of business was to look under the hood to be sure the numbers matched (they do). With flashlights in hand, they continued their inspection and were now on their backs looking underneath the car, opened the doors to check out the interior, and inspecting the trunk, all while having little side conversations about things they noticed. It was clear they both had knowledge and luckily could see past the thick layer of dust and debris of parts stored in the garage. It was as if these two

I also got a few educational lessons from John! (Thank you, John.) While the car is a work-in-progress and the list still has many items to be checked off, I’ve been having a blast driving around, telling the car’s history, and showing off old photos. Blue Mercury Cougars is certainly a popular theme for May’s Motorhead Magazine articles! This 1976 Cat makes its den in Canada. In 1980, at the age of fourteen, Grant Sinclair’s passion for classic cars started out with a 1966 Chevrolet Nova Wagon. This was the first of many beautiful cars that he owned and cared for over the following years. So many in fact, he lost overall count of them. Some of the most memorable ones were Monte Carlos, Camaros, Gran Torinos, Chevy trucks, and of course Mercury Cougars. This latest Cat was the third Sinclair has owned. “This one was different, I had to have it”. Options were plenty on this Mercury. Unique attributes include the Light Aqua colour, the full vinyl roof; a column shift instead of the usual console style; a split bench cloth power seat (not buckets but the passenger seat reclines), open diff, and a full load of accessories except power 48| Motorhead Magazine - May 2022
locks (although there are power side windows). Multiple group packages (Convenience and Visibility) were combined to pile on the features. Exterior details to note are Dual Remote Racing Mirrors, Rocker Panel and Body Moldings, Bumper Protectors, Tinted Glass, and Turbine Spoke Aluminum Wheels.

Interior amenities include Interval Select Wipers, Auto Air Conditioning, Speed Control, Tilt Wheel, AM / FM, and Rear Elec Defroster. The Cat arrived stock with a 460 4V engine mated to a 3-speed automatic. Due to the cold Canadian weather, a block heater was a mandated addition Grant purchased this Cat in Calgary in 2012 with only 52,000 miles making him the second
registered owner. The original owner, Roy Loucks, purchased it from Percival Mercury Sales Ltd. in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 5, 1976 for $8820. As the car had been left in an open carport, the vinyl roof and paint were faded with some minor body damage but NO rust. Mechanically, the Mercury only needed a tune up, and the suspension was upgraded before shipping it east to Glen Rowe of Rowes Collision in Greens Harbour
Trinity Bay, Newfoundland for painting and body restorations. When completed, the Cat came home to North Shore Mechanical in Bonnyville, Alberta Canada where it still is today. “My Cougar floats down the highway on its heavy-duty suspension. It is driven around the area occasionally. I have had the Cat at one car show just for fun.”

Brian Cervini The Legacy that Lives On Written By his daughters: Celia Cervini and Lindsey Quimby Who was Brian Cervini? To most, he was “Rambo”, but to us, he was Dad. We would like to take you back in time and tell you how it all began. Like most teenage boys, Brian took a liking to all things with wheels, he lived on them. As early as one can remember you could always catch him riding his dirt bike while holding a wheelie. Once old enough to drive, he began taking his father’s catering truck to local autobody shops, from there his passion for the automobile industry really began to flourish. He purchased a green AMC Gremlin from his next-door neighbor, Pat Scungio. At the time, it was only a shell. Brian dropped a Chevy 350 into it and made it the most obnoxious little beast on the street. Throughout high school he would tinker around with his dads’ tools and fix anything thrown his way. Once graduated, he began night classes at Rhode Island Trade School to study Automotive. Years passed by, many cars worked on, a marriage and 4 children later he had his beautiful family. He worked tirelessly day in and day out to provide. His passion and devotion to his work always shown through each vehicle that passed through his doors. He was a man loved by many. Whether you knew him a lifetime or just a moment in passing, he always left a positive impact. His voice, his laugh, it would light up a room. Brian was a fun, caring, selfless man who always put others first. His magnetic personality would shine through upon others. If you ever needed anything - car related or not - he would do whatever he could to help. He was always one to lend a helping hand, no task too big or too small. He gained his nickname, Rambo, from his previous boss, Gary Salzillo, of Northeast Auto Body. “He came in with a bandana, his shirt off, army cargo shorts, and flip flops on. He just looked like Rambo, that’s how he got his nick name. I said, Brian you look like Rambo. From then on, we started calling him Rambo.”-Gary Salzillo. Their friendship grew from there. Brian was the man who would fix any issue in the shop, whether it had to do with a car or not, he was the man for the job. 50| Motorhead Magazine - May 2022

His most recent employer, Phillip Maxwell Auto Body, recalled his late nights in the garage jamming out to classic tunes. Some days would be a karaoke session as he would sing along to Cyndi Lauper. hand to others at the shop. If someone needed his expertise, he would stop what he was doing to help. His exuberant personality will surely be missed. I know many others out there will all have a story to tell about him, as his children we do have one more thing we would like to share, so we asked ourselves, “If I could talk to Dad one more time, what would I say to him?”

I’m sorry dad. Thank goodness for my little ones, they are what keeps my mind occupied. When I’m at work I kind of just do what I do and know that would make you proud. Everything about cars I have learned from you, thank you Dad, I love you.

Whether it was something I wanted to hear or not, you somehow always inspired me by the time the talk was over. You were always there to listen, if I was having a bad day, problems at work or home, you were always there when I needed someone to talk to. You knew exactly what to say every time to make me feel comfort. You were my rock, someone to always lean on. No matter how busy or tired you were, you always made time for someone in need. I love you, Dad.
Love Lindsey Dad, I miss you so much, I think about you always. You taught me everything, you were the one that I learned all life’s lessons. Throughout my days I think of you often, especially when I am driving and working up in your shop. Everything I do in life lately is you, it’s purely bittersweet. I love you, Dad.

Our mission is to help a student pay their way through a technical college with a study in Automotive. Last year we hosted our very first Ride for Rambo, with over 150 people in attendance, we were able to put 100% of the proceeds into the scholarship fund. This year we have bigger and better plans. Our venue of choice is The Last Resort located in Smithfield. So please “Save the Date” of Sunday, September 18 for our Ride for Rambo 2022. An Annual Tribute to “Mustang Mike” By ED YESSAIAN
Michael Travers was a hard-working man that had two loves in his life; his beautiful family and Mustang Cobra’s. He is credited with inventing the term COBRO to address all his fellow SVT Elite so it was only fitting that we had a Michael Travers COBRO award at ED DAY, before eventually dedicating the whole show to his memory. “Mustang Mike” as he was affectionately known, never missed a Dyno Day at Performance Dyno in Loudon, NH and he never missed an ED DAY Car Show. His two Cobras were immaculate inside and out and both had a few go-fast goodies added to their resume. Mike was a long-standing member of NH Mustang Club where he met some of his closest friends., most of whom were involved in this year’s ED DAY/ Michael Travers Memorial Car Show. Mike would have enjoyed the many rows of spotless show cars, especially the Saleen Mustang group that attended and of course quite a few COBROS. The show is open to all makes and models and this year quite a few people stood proudly with their well-deserved hardware. MATT GALKO LEADS LAPS, FINISHES SI X By SOUZA MEDIA/KYLE SOUZA STAFFORD, Conn. – For the first time in 2022, Stan Mertz Racing unloaded at the track for the 50th running of the NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway on April 23-24. Driving the No. 6, Matt Galko qualified into the big dance, and led laps in the first half of the 100-lap Spring Sizzler feature. After a pit stop for fresh rubber, Galko restarted outside the top-10, but worked his way back into the top-10 quickly, and continued advancing through the field before the finish. When the checkered flag went in the air, Galko crossed the line sixth in the Stan Mertz Racing entry, sponsored by Koopman Lumber. The run was
a strong start to a busy 2022 season schedule for Galko and the Mertz Racing team with a fresh paint scheme and momentum now on their side. “I think we had a very strong showing for the first race as a team, we all clicked from the get go and had a strong car all weekend,” Galko said. “It’s good when you’re disappointed with a 6th place finish and leading some laps. I think if we could have gotten a little better track position after the pit stop, we would have been right with Hirschman and Preece battling for the lead. I think we are in a strong place for the next open race at Stafford and we should be able to compete for wins for the remainder of the season. I can’t thank Stan enough for this great opportunity, along with the entire

Etch reflects back to the days of classic car shows and cruise nights before the government took all of it away. The warm and sunny mornings waking up to the smell of hot coffee waiting to be poured into his favorite coffee cup. He would slowly crawl out of bed, ignore his chronic pain, reach for his cane, and make his way to the kitchen to fry up a couple of eggs with bacon for breakfast. Etch would glance into the garage as he walked by the open doorway that exposed his tar black 1969, Pontiac GTO parked inside. He knew he would be firing up that beast in a little while and drive to an area car show. Shaved, showered and now dressed in his black pair of jeans, one of his black OUTLAW Team Drag Racing Tee Shirts and his black work boots, Etch reaches for his car keys resting on top of one of his GTO model cars displayed on a shelf just inside the entrance to his garage and slowly makes his way to the driver side of his classic muscle car.
Moments later, he hits the button on his remote garage door opener while turning the key in the ignition. He has the stereo set to start playing one of his favorite songs, “Bad to the Bone”, once the GTO is fired up and ready to roll. The dual exhaust sounds like a freight train just travelled alongside the Pontiac. The garage door opens. OUTLAW rumbles outside into the bright sunshine while Etch reaches for his sunglasses resting on the dashboard. The black GTO crawls to the end of the driveway and stops before entering the street. Etch looks both ways and then turns the steering wheel to the right. The classic muscle car sits on the unpopulated dead end street for a few seconds. Etch sees that there is no one on the street ahead of him and only the rows of trees behind him. He cranks up the stereo, shifts his car into low and floormats the gas pedal. OUTLAW’s front tires lift off the pavement while the rear tires send out a billowing smoke cloud and the exhaust

shakes the windows in his house. OUTLAW’s nose drops back down and then launches down the street leaving a few telephone pole length tire marks in its wake. Etch eases off the gas pedal and brings OUTLAW to a crawl before entering the main roadway that will take him to one of his favorite car shows. Soon, it will all come to end. Etch will become a wanted outlaw and his only crime will be that he took his 1969, Pontiac GTO, out of his garage, head out onto a country road to take a cruise that is now illegal and defy new legislation that bans these vehicles from streets, roadways and highways across America. Etch will become what they made him. He will become an outlaw.
