The Cruisin’ Season was coming to a close when the owners of Thompson Speedway and Bogey’s Ice Cream contacted me about showcasing
It was the last Sunday in August and it was a gorgeous day for a classic car and truck show. The turnout was fantastic and we had a lot of show vehicles, spectators and kids attending this venue throughout the entire

There were plenty of cool hot rods showcasing at this event and the kids received plenty of Bucky Kids Safety Fun Paks filled with fridge magnets, stickers, book page savers, coloring posters and full color mini-posters. A ton of Motorhead Magazines were passed out and all of the kids went looking for their very own Motorhead kids coloring calendar page published every month in every issue with safety themes and tips incorporated with coloring cartoons. The adults all took them home with them along with all of the kids safety merchandise and materials. Many attending know me and who I am and as soon as they saw me with the Bucky giant balloon they knew I had a truck loaded with kids stuff and Motorhead Magazines for them to take home after the classic car and truck show ended for the day. The owners of Thompson Speedway and Bogey’s Ice Cream were thrilled about the Bucky giant balloon being there on display and all of the items I brought that were available in my truck. Motorhead kids are the future of this classic car and truck show hobby and lifestyle Continued Next Page
and everyone knows that you need some creative attractions that will help encourage kids and families to attend these events for decades to come. Without it, this automotive lifestyle will eventually fall away by the side of the road somewhere and only be something we remember from our past. We don’t want that to happen. We want this classic car and truck lifestyle and hobby to thrive and survive for decades, not just a few more years. In order to do that we need to encourage kids and even tweens and teens to be a part of this scene. Spring is only a few months away so plan on taking your Motorhead kids out to the first car show and cruise night of the 2020 classic car show season. Help keep this automotive state-of-mind in our Motorhead’s for a very long time. CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Steve Reis M Mustangs vs the World Shootout Sponsored by Performance Dyno
ED YESSAIAN Steve Reis was well known for two things, talking smack at the drag strip and having a good time with his friends and family. So it was only fitting, after his untimely passing, that his friends and family kept his most beloved traditions alive. And so was formed the annual Steve Reis Memorial event, which started as Mustang vs F-Body but was eventually opened up to all makes and models, because let’s face it; Steve liked beating anyone, no matter what they were driving. For 2019 the showing was awesome with over 40 cars in the bracket class alone. At the end of it all some familiar faces stood tall in the winner’s circle, but a few new characters also prevailed. As always, once the tire smoke cleared, a select few took home one of the coveted trophy mugs affectionately known as the Stevie Mug…
13.00 Index The final round came down to two all-time favorites from Outlaw 10.5’s True Street class, as Greg Bagnell campaigned a completely new car against RB Phillips and the Viagra V6 car. Bagnell would take the win.

12.00 Index Piloting his immaculate GTO, Alex Moura would go up against his Godfather Bruno Moura, who was running his recently acquired Terminator 03 Cobra. In the end the Godfather grabbed the victory and the Stevie mug, but the NY Rangers still stink at hockey. 11.00 Index Jim Michaud would face off against Mike Carvalho’s Terminator swapped Fox Body and it would be Carvalho sipping his victory beverages from the Stevie mug.
Memorial
10.00 Index Multiple time winner Tim Higgins would battle the Monte Carlo SS of Keith Rice who would emerge victorious and grab his first Stevie Mug. 9.00 Index Xander’s favorite Tony Jarvis would choose to run his Cobra Jet for this event, going up against defending 9.00 Champ Ken Samson, who successfully defended his title and raised his Stevie Mug high!! Bracket Class This class featured two of the nicest cars in the event, as Robert Smith and his 68 Camaro went up against Robert Morads 57 Chevy. Smith would take the win in this one. Xander’s Choice Award (Coolest Race Car) This year’s award for coolest race car went to Robert Morad’s 1957 Chevy. This car was just awesome in so many ways and coincidently Xander’s new little sister Zoe had just picked up her own pink 57 Chevy ride on toy just hours before this event.

There’s really no other felling like taking delivery of your first Mustang or Muscle Car, especially when you’re in your early teenage years. The first time you lay eyes on that aggressive stance, the first smell of the leather interior, the first feeling of that rumble that happens after your first turn of the key. Every one of us can recall what seemed like the greatest day of our life when we got behind the wheel of our very own piece of American History. For Jason Pjojian of Cranston RI, that amazing sense of ownership and pride came to reality this past summer when he got his hands on his immaculate 1997 SVT COBRA.

So What Do You Drive? By BILL PRATT
When customers walk into an auto parts store to purchase a hard part for their vehicle, they generally know the basic information needed to get the right part. They know the year, the make, and the model. Usually they also know the engine size. That’s typically all you need to get the right replacement part for most maintenance items. Aftermarket accessories are a different matter entirely, since they have to work with the style aspects of the vehicle as well as differences among sub-models. More frequently than one might suppose, customers walk into our store not really knowing the finer details, such as cab configuration, trim level, or bed length, for example. The manufacturers don’t make it easy, either. General Motors has a regular cab, a double cab, and a crew cab. Regular cabs are easy, but customers look at their GMC Sierra or Chevrolet Silverado, see four doors, and conclude they have a crew cab. Often, what they have is a double cab but the only way
they’d know the difference is if they knew that a true crew cab has four equal size doors while a double cab has shorter rear doors. Not to be outdone, the other manufacturers all use different names for their cab configurations. Ram has it’s Crew Cab and Mega Cab. Toyota has it’s Access cab and Crew Cab or, on the Tundra, CrewMax. Ford has a SuperCab and a SuperCrew. As if that’s not enough, the manufacturers will up and change the name of a given cab configuration. Next, we have the various bed sizes. We’ve had many a conversation with someone who just traded in a truck with a “6.5-foot” bed on a new truck with a “6.5-foot” bed and want to know if they can move their old tonneau cover or ladder rack system over. Sometimes the answer is yes, but a lot of the time the answer is no because the manufacturer changed the bed dimensions at some point between the old and new model years. There is actually no such thing as a true 6-and-a-half-foot bed anymore. When looking at bed accessories, it’s best to know the length of your bed in inches as measured from the front bulkhead to the top center of the tailgate. That will usually be close enough to select the correct length accessory.
You also want to be familiar with the options your truck has. Does it have a deck rail or cargo management rail in the bed? Does the tailgate have a step built in? Does the bed have cargo lights up under the rail? Your best bet, given all the options that are available for today’s vehicles is to take a picture of your window and keep it on your smart phone. If you purchased a used vehicle, ask the dealer to provide you a printout of the options list. Model switchovers can add to the confusion. Owners of 2018 Wranglers had to know if they’d purchased a JK or JL version since both models coexisted that model year and the JL had little to nothing in common with the JK. We had several customers who only knew they’d purchased a 2018 Wrangler and had no idea that the outgoing and incoming generations were being sold right alongside each other. Finally, there’s the trim level. Ram has 7 different trim levels that can influence seat covers, for example. Ford has 7 as well. So, you get the idea. Customers frequently don’t know the trim level until they hear us mention it
from the list we have in front of us. If you are looking to accessorize your ride, drive it to the store where you plan to purchase. We can look at it and help you avoid ordering the wrong thing. If you can’t drive it in for us to look at, there are online websites that can decode your VIN and provide you with a reasonable amount of information, although maybe not everything you’ need. The goal is to get the right part the first time, to have it seamlessly integrate with the style and trim level you have, and to provide the durability and functionality you need without any missteps or do-overs. Smittys Auto Service: 60 Years in Business MIKE GALLO How many businesses in this day and age can go years on end and still be successful? If you look at the numbers they are a bit astonishing, as most small businesses fail after a short time. But sometimes there is an exception to the rule. What I’m getting at is there are certain businesses that have what it takes to be successful year after year. Imagine being in business for 60 years? Do you think it’s possible? Well I’m here to assure you that it most certainly is. Check out Smitty’s Garage in Coventry, Rhode Island. This has been a family-owned business for the past 60 years. It has had knowledge and a great customer base passed on throughout this time. This business started back in 1959 when things were quite a bit different. Moe Smith started Smitty’s Garage after working for a local Pontiac and Chevrolet dealer. Throughout the years Moe built up a very good clientele because of his great work ethic and Continued Next Page 14| Motorhead Magazine - November 2019

his honesty with customers. The shop specialized in doing alignments and brake jobs. After some time Moe’s son Jeff took over the business and also did very well. As time went on Jeff ’s son Dan would become interested in what was going on down at the garage and would eventually start working there at nine years old sweeping floors. That’s how things were back in the old days businesses were passed on from family member to family member and in the process younger generations learned the trade. Dan was very passionate about his work and excelled at working on cars. From moving up from changing oil and doing minor work under the hoods of cars Dan has become a master at his craft and is one of the best front end and alignment guys in Rhode Island. The garage is still in the same place it has been from day one as it has been grandfathered in and won’t be going any place anytime soon. And what’s great about this is that Dan is now teaching his son, as his father taught him, about cars. Well, Motorhead would like to congratulate Dan Smith on the 60 year milestone of his family’s garage and of his great work in his community helping out customers and always being honest with them. Keep the tradition going for another 60 years.

NEW GENERATIO
THE FUTURE OF DRAG RA
By ED YESSAIAN Every once in a while, as I wander around car shows and drag racing vents I’ll hear the older generation talk about how kids aren’t into cars and kids aren’t into racing and truthfully I used to almost believe that the future of the sport was on the decline. But then I met Stephanie Correia who successfully runs the Junior Dragster program at New England Dragway and I realized that Drag Racing in New England is going strong and doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. The kids can start racing as young as five years old and can continue until they “age out”. Usually before that happens the kids move into full sized cars and that’s one of the reasons we created the New Generation Challenge, to showcase the younger generation and attract new racers that might have been intimidated previously in the regular Points Series. This was our fourth New Generation Challenge and it featured a few new faces. After the a couple Qualifying rounds the kids headed right into competition and round by round, this is how it went down…

EFI Conversion with Karl’s East Coast Speed - Part 2 In last months issue we went over some history of EFI systems and some of the problems installing one of these systems can solve for your hot rod. This month we will get a little more technical. Once you make the decision to ditch your tired old carburetor and replace it with an Electronic Throttle Body Injection system you need to figure a few things out. One of the first things to determine is the approximate power output of the engine. TBI systems use electronic fuel injectors to get the proper amount of fuel into
The next issue to address is the fuel system. EFI requires much higher fuel pressure then a standard carburetor. You will need to install a high pressure electric fuel pump that can consistently supply at least 45 pounds of fuel pressure to the throttle body unit. Electric pumps need to be mounted at the rear of the car because they are designed to push the fuel forward towards the engine. Fuel pumps come in many sizes, going with a slightly over sized pump is usually recommended. Having a little extra fuel on tap is a good thing. Electric fuel pump technology has evolved very quickly over the last few years and gone are the days of needing a noisy electric pump that drowns out the sound of your exhaust. Many modern pumps are whisper quiet and can supply enough fuel to support ridiculously high horsepower levels. We are also dealers for a company that manufactures completely new fuel tanks built for EFI conversions. These tanks are a
Another thing to consider when installing a Self Learning fuel injection system is the size of the camshaft in your engine. Because these systems self learn they need to be able to distinguish a difference between idle, cruise and wide open throttle. If your engine has a large camshaft with excessive overlap and very low idle vacuum the computer will struggle to learn properly on its own. There are some tricks to deal with this issue that we have found over time.
the engine and different systems use different sizes and amounts of injectors to handle different levels of horsepower. Another question to answer is how you will you get the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. Choosing a TBI system that is too large for your application can cause issues similar to having a carburetor that is too large for your engine. The MSD Atomic system has 4 fuel injectors and is rated up to 625 engine HP with the proper fuel system. The FAST XFI 2.0 TBI system has 8 fuel injectors and is rated by FAST for up to 1200 engine HP under the right conditions. FAST also has an EZ EFI system rated for 650 engine HP. These systems all have Self Learning capabilities and will offer excellent drivability and cold starts like new a car. Most cars on the road are well under 600 engine horse power and should use the lower HP rated systems.
gas fumes better then standard rubber EFI fuel hose and standard stainless steel braided hose. A return line also needs to be utilized when doing this job. Some companies will say a return line is optional, but experience has proven it to be mandatory for any system we install.
great option and offer the cleanest packaging and best overall operation of the system because the fuel pump is mounted inside the tank. The fuel lines will also need to be addressed. There are many types of fuel line available today and each of them have different characteristics. We have installed many systems here at the shop have and used either stainless steel hard line or braided stainless steel PTFE lined hose. Both of these lines will last forever and will control the
All of this might seem like a lot, but it is really not that big of an issue. The benefits of these systems far outweigh the negatives. With a properly installed TBI system your vehicle will cold start without hesitation and cruise down the road getting great gas mileage and running smooth. Next month we will get into the ignition system and the operation of the different systems as well as some of the problems we have seen over the years of using these systems. As always if you have any questions or want to talk more about installing EFI on your car give the shop a call. Karl’s East Coast Speed 401-737-7932

By MIKE GALLO In case you haven’t heard, the Bugatti Chiron just set the world record top speed with an astounding 304.77 miles per hour. This makes the Bugatti Chiron the world’s fastest supercar by quite a long shot. Andy Wallace reached the speed on Volkswagen groups Ehra -Lessen test track in Germany. This isn’t just any stock Chiron. The Dallara supplied body has been optimized for aerodynamics and the car is actually 10 inches longer than a normal Bugatti Chiron. The car sits lower to the ground in the rear and has a modified exhaust similar to that of the one-off Bugatti Centodieci. Furthermore the Chiron rear wing and air brake were jettisoned and the new aero piece was integrated into the car’s tail. The car also does not have a passenger seat but a safety roll cage
was installed. As for the power, the record-setting Chiron uses the same 8.0 liter quad-turbo w16 engine found in the stock car though it has the 1600 horsepower tune of the Centodieci. The gearbox and the all-wheel drive systems are unchanged from stock. Michelin played a huge role in the Bugatti top speed run. The tire maker created special Pilot Sport cup 2 tires that are capable of rotating up to 4100 times per minute. The tires were even x-rayed before being fitted to the Bugatti to make sure no imperfections were present. That’s some serious speed for a tire to handle. But of course Michelin comes through again. )Now that this record has been set I wonder who will try to break it next? I guess time will tell. Any guesses?

‘TIS THE SEA By JIM WEICHERDING Well folks, it’s over!
The car show season is once again behind us and over the coming months all we can really do is reflect upon how much we miss shining up our show vehicles and heading out to an area car show or cruise night across Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts and spend some time around cool rides and good friends.
The warmer weather is now going to be replaced with colder weather and poor road conditions due to falling leaves covering our backroads and streets. Personally, I’m going to miss all of the weekly cruise nights and the annual weekend car shows I attend during the cruisin’ season when the weather is warm and sunny. I don’t like winter months very much. I’m like most of you and I’m sure you aren’t too crazy about the winter months either.
The winter season does give a lot of us the time

to either rebuild our current rides, buy and rebuild or restore our new rides or just make sure our rides are ready for the next spring season when the area car shows and cruise nights begin once again for another season here in New England. Most of us are always on the lookout for something new to buy and restore or just to buy and drive to and from automotive events each year. I’m a GM and Chevy enthusiast myself but I know that there are plenty of Mopar and Ford enthusiasts out there in the automotive world too. Some of you are into straight up hot rods and muscle cars, nostalgia vehicles and or trucks and even rat rods and that’s what make this car culture and hobby such a great way of life. So, I know you are probably feeling like the winter cabin fever will soon be getting the best of you but remember, before you know it, spring will be here and we can get back to showcasing our rides at these weekly cruise nights and annual car shows. We will once again be seeing all of these cool rides and spending time with our good friends. Winter is temporary, but our passion for the automotive hobby lasts forever.

For the second time, William Wall is holding the championship in the Late Model division. But this one didn’t come without a bit of perseverance in the second half of the year. Wall started with

Different season, same result. Keith Rocco, a veteran Sunoco Modified racer at Thompson, earned his eighth track championship this year in the premiere NASCAR division. Rocco won four races, which tied Ronnie Williams for the most in the class. His title extends his lead as the driver with the most championships in Thompson’s history, and it also added him to another historic NASCAR list. Rocco tied Joe Kosiski for the most NASCAR Division I track titles in the Whelen All-American Series era (1982-present), with 17. He now has eight at Thompson, six at New London-Waterford Speedbowl, and three at Stafford Motor Speedway. “This is absolutely amazing, I’m almost getting choked up here,” Gero said. “I wanted this so much for all of my guys. Everyone puts in so much effort and it’s an awesome feeling.” Gero’s experience might not have compared to some other competitors, but his drive to finish at the front, and get the most as he could out of his car, was enough to seal him a title trophy.

three finishes inside the top two, including a win, but struggled a bit with speed going down the stretch. In the finale, Wall entered the 25-lap feature six points behind Woody Pitkat, but when Pitkat was collected in a crash, Wall took advantage – finishing sixth – enough to clinch the title by four points over Derek Gluchacki. It was the second title in the last four years for the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, native. “I just wanted to go out there and have fun,” Wall said. “I knew if I was going to win it, there was going to have to a lot of luck and my side, and that showed. I just can’t say enough about my team, they have been behind me 110 percent, and if it wasn’t for them, I definitely wouldn’t be here.” Wall is a graduate of the Little T Speedway, just across the property from Thompson’s .625-mile NASCAR oval.
SK LIGHT MODIFIED® – BRYAN NARDUCCI (No. 01) Bryan Narducci left no doubt that he was going to be the SK Light Modified® champion at Thompson in 2019. Narducci, who had won all four races the division ran in 2018, was one of many happy to see the addition as a full-time class for this season. He took advantage of it.

Doug Curry used this year as one of redemption, and he ended up accomplishing his goal. After coming close to winning the Mini Stock title at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl last year, Curry transitioned to Thompson hoping to gain momentum and contend for a title. He found himself more than 30 points out with just a few races to go, but didn’t let that derail his efforts.
The Colchester, Connecticut, driver won seven “This is everything,” Curry said. “I can’t even extimes in the 10 events, including the finale, and plain what this means. I’ve wanted this. My Dad won the title by 70 points -- able to clinch the had a Mini Stock when I was a little kid and ever crown a race early. Between Thompson and Stafsince then, I wanted to drive. When I started racford Motor Speedway, Narducci won 15 times. He ing when I was 16, it was so rough. We struggled was also able to earn his second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division III national champiDoug Curry onship, accruing enough Clarus Studios/Thompson Speedway points between the two tracks to best the entire country. “I came here just wanting to win the race, because clinching it during the last race, and I got wrecked, it wasn’t very satisfying, but this is,” Narducci said after winning at the Sunoco World Series. “It’s pretty amazing. I can’t thank everybody on the crew enough for making it happen.” His plans for next year are not quite yet determined, but he would like to move up the racing ladder.

so bad, wrecked a lot of cars, and just couldn’t get it going.” This year, Curry proved to be the dominant car in the final stretch of the year. He won two of the final six races, but finished inside the top three in all but one of them. He left the finale up by seven points on a tie between Steve and Scott Michalski in the championship battle.
In his second full-time season, Kyle Gero proved consistency would Kyle Gero matter in the final Clarus Studios/Thompson Speedway Limited Sportsman championship tally. 91 Ford Mustang LX By MIKE GALLO Meet Mark Norman and his 1991 Ford Mustang LX with a coyote swap. Now I’m sure you’re thinking I have seen Fox body Mustangs with Coyote motors before but this one’s a bit different. If you haven’t noticed, this particular build has two BorgWarner twin turbos hanging off the front of the motor which makes it that much more appealing. Now let me give you a little background on this car and its owner. Mark has had a love for these cars for over 20 years and has owned this particular Mustang for the better part of 17 years. The car started off as a bone stock 5.0 with an automatic transmission that Mark picked up in Virginia a long time ago and brought back to Rhode Island. Throughout the years the car has gone through a couple of different builds but this one is clearly the best yet. The car was recently stripped of its original paint down to bare metal and painted this silver tone that you see before your eyes. The car had all of its original moldings and weatherstripping replaced and a few other parts. Mark had a vision for this car to be reliable so he decided to go with the tried-and-true Coyote motor. Mark installed a boss

Mark Norman’s 1991 Ford Mustang LX Continued from previous page crank and used the stock rods and pistons. To get the power to the back wheels Mark uses a Mighty Mite C4 automatic transmission with a 4200 stall converter for right now. That power is transmitted to a 8.8 rear end that house has 33 spline gun drilled Moser axles with C clip eliminators. The rear end also has an upgraded rear cover and some extra bracing to keep the rear end from moving side to side. In the front of the car Mark used a UPR K member to facilitate mounting the new coyote motor into the engine bay of his Fox body. To help keep the air temperatures cool Mark also uses an air to air intercooler. And as far as the brakes go he used one of the top companies by the name of Aerospace front and rear disc brakes to slow the car down. The car has a custom 10 point cage done by RKL performance in West Warwick, Rhode Island and just so we’re clear RKL performance is responsible for this super clean install and build of this complete car. Once you look under the hood of Mark’s car you will notice it is one of the cleanest Fox body coyote swaps around here. No attention to detail was spared...this car is not only fast but can serve as a show driven car also. One of the other nice things about this car is that it still has the stock interior with all the front and rear seats. Sometimes when we build cars like this we lose some of the creature comforts but not in this car as it still retains its power windows and door locks and has working heat for those cold nights out on the street or at the drag strip. Now I’m sure you’re wondering

what this car makes more power on the dyno? I guess you’re just going to have to keep guessing but we will let you know once the car has the correct torque converter in it…. however, I will give you a hint though the car once dialed in will be capable of sub 9 second quarter mile passes at close to 150 miles per hour or more. Now I’m sure you’ve also noticed the gorgeous wheels on this car, well they are made by CHAMPION and the rears are 15 by 10 with beadlocks and the fronts are 15 by 3 and ½…with Mickey Thompson 275 60 15 drag radicals in the rear. The car also has a custom Mark Williams steering wheel and a Wilwood master cylinder for the brakes. Mark plans to bring this car to the track next season I’m sure... but in the meantime you can see him at some cars and coffees and local car shows. Mark’s newest creation has gathered quite a following and it should. So tell me what do you think of Mark’s car? I for one couldn’t imagine it any better than what it is. Ray Leathers from RKL PERFORMANCE has done an amazing job so congratulations go out to him on this gorgeous build. In my opinion RKL PERFORMANCE does some of the best custom work on the east coast so check out some of his other builds. Well that’s it for now my MOTORHEADS...until next month keep the wheels spinning and the motors revving...over and out. CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Ariella Fahey deSouza, owner of Domestic Assistant Services of NE started the business after working with pets for over 20 years professionally and personally. Here she is able to combine her love of animals along with business smarts to get ahead. It’s been great, she will tell you, “Just being able to work with 4 legged people is enjoyable -you learn to fall in love with each and every one of them” - Ariella If you haven’t met her yet, she’s a sweet woman who has been working with dogs since she was roughly 5 years old whether they were big, small, deaf or blind it didn’t and doesn’t matter. As she grew up it only made sense to work with pets in general. “Growing up I always wanted a farm. We had hedgehogs, fish, hamsters, snakes, dogs and I wanted so many more! My mom knew that there was always a pet I wanted. My favorite place was the zoo” -Ariella She was that helpful child with a heart of gold and now is just a helpful, lovely woman with the same heart. When she isn’t working with pet she spends time with her family and work on other business ventures (mainly financial coaching), volunteering, church and running around. We do hope that her bright future continues to prosper and are happy to feature her this month in Motorhead Magazine. HISTORY OF THE MUSTANG The Ford Mustang is an American car manufactured by Ford. It was originally based on the platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. The original 1962 Ford Mustang I two-seater concept car had evolved into the 1963 Mustang II four-seater concept car which Ford used to pretest how the public would take interest in the first production Mustang. The 1963 Mustang II concept car was designed with a variation of the production model’s front and rear ends with a roof that was 2.7 inches shorter. Introduced early on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), and thus dubbed as a “1964½” by Mustang fans, the 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A. The Mustang has undergone several transformations to its current sixth generation. The Mustang created the “pony car” class of American cars, distinguished as affordable sporty coupes with long hoods and short rear decks, and gave rise to competitors such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, Chrysler’s revamped Plymouth Barracuda, and the second generation Dodge Challenger. The Mustang is also credited for inspiring the designs of coupés such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri, which were imported to the United States. As of August 2018, over 10 million Mustangs have been produced in the U.S. The Ford Mustang began production five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year. The early production versions are often referred to as “1964½ models” but all Mustangs were advertised, VIN coded and titled by Ford as 1965 models, though minor design updates in August 1964 at the formal start of the 1965 production year contribute to tracking 1964½ production data separately from 1965 data. With production beginning in Dearborn, Michigan, on March 9, 1964; the new car was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World’s Fair. Executive stylist John Najjar, who was a fan of the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane, is credited by Ford to have suggested the name.Najjar co-designed the first prototype of the Ford Mustang known as Ford Mustang I in 1961, working jointly with fellow Ford stylist Philip T. Clark. The Mustang I made its formal debut at the United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York, on October 7, 1962, where test driver and contemporary Formula One race driver Dan Gurney lapped the track in a demonstration using the second “race” prototype. His lap times were only slightly off the pace of the F1 race cars. An alternative view was that Robert J. Eggert, Ford Division market research manager, first suggested the Mustang name. Eggert, a breeder of quarterhorses, received a birthday present from his wife of the book, The Mustangs by J. Frank Dobie in 1960. Later, the book’s title gave him the idea of adding the “Mustang” name for Ford’s new concept car. The designer preferred Cougar (early styling bucks can be seen wearing a Cougar grille emblem) or Torino (an advertising campaign using the Torino name was actually prepared), while Henry Ford II wanted T-bird II. As the person responsible for Ford’s research on potential names, Eggert added “Mustang” to the list to be tested by focus groups; “Mustang,” by a wide margin, came out on top under the heading: “Suitability as Name for the Special Car.” The name could not be used in Germany,[18] however, because it was owned by Krupp, which had manufactured trucks between 1951 and 1964 with the name Mustang. Ford refused to buy the name for about US$10,000 from Krupp at the time. Kreidler, a manufacturer of mopeds, also used the name, so Mustang was sold in Germany as the “T-5” until December 1978.
Mustangs grew larger and heavier with each model year until, in response to the 1971–1973 models, Ford returned the car to its original size and concept for 1974. It has since seen several platform generations and designs. Although some other pony cars have seen a revival, the Mustang is the only original model to remain in uninterrupted production over five decades of development and revision.
First generation (1965–1973) Lee Iacocca’s assistant general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey was the head engineer for the T-5 project—supervising the overall development of the car in a record 18 months—while Iacocca himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager. The T-5 prototype was a twoseat, mid-mounted engine roadster. This vehicle employed the German Ford Taunus V4 engine. It was claimed that the decision to abandon the two-seat design was in part due to the increase in sales the Thunderbird had seen when enlarged from a two-seater to a 2+2 in 1958. Thus, a four-seat car with full space for the front bucket seats, as originally planned, and a rear bench seat with significantly less space than was common at the time, were standard. A “Fastback 2+2”, first manufactured on August 17, 1964, enclosed the trunk space under a sweeping exterior line similar to the second series Corvette Sting Ray and European sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type coupe. To achieve an advertised list price of US$2,368, the Mustang was based heavily on familiar yet simple components, many of which were already in production for other Ford models. Many (if not most) of the interior, chassis, suspension, and drivetrain components were derived from those used on Ford’s Falcon and Fairlane. This use of common components also shortened the learning curve for assembly and repair workers, while at the same time allowing dealers to pick up the Mustang without also having to invest in additional spare parts inventory to support the new car line. Original sales forecasts projected less than 100,000 units for the first year. This mark was surpassed in three months from rollout. Another 318,000 would be sold during the model year (a record), and in its first eighteen months, more than one million Mustangs were built. Source: wikipedia.com

57 FUNERALS Mini-Series By JIM WEICHERDING
501 Main St. Pawtucket, RI 02860
Randolph watches out of the diner windows and sees the two vehicles that followed him to the plaza parked across the street in another plaza. “Don’t let them bother you buddy. They are just trying to intimidate you.” Randolph replies, “Yeah, I get that. Maybe I should turn the tables on them and start the intimidation tactics myself.” The waitress brings the three men their drinks. She looks at Randolph looking out the window at the punks parked across the street. “They do that to everybody in this neighborhood now. They pedal their drugs to the school kids leaving for the day at the high school down the street like clockwork.” Randolph replies, “Why doesn’t anyone do anything about it? Call the cops. They will chase them out of here.” Waitress said, “By the time the police arrive they are already gone. Cell phones let everybody else know what’s going on everywhere nowadays. There’s no getting around it.” Randolph stares at the punks while the high school students leaving school for the day walk up to their vehicles with cash in their hands. “Maybe there is something that we can do about it,” said, Randolph. One of his friends responds harshly, “We have already attended 56 funerals over the past years saying goodbye to our fallen friends. We don’t need you to become funeral number 57 Randy.” Randolph stares across the street and watches the street punks passing packets of drugs to the high school students in exchange for their cash from inside their cars. “Somebody has to do something about that,” said, Randolph. One of his buddies replies, “Yeah, who, you?” and starts to laugh under his breath. “Maybe me!” said Randolph. His two war buddies stare across the street now and the punks catch sight of their piercing eyes watching them from the inside of the diner. The waitress brings them their orders and she looks across the street and watches the punks deal their drugs to the high school students. “What’s next? she asks, “They start dealing to the middle school and grade school students down the street in the other direction?” Randolph replies, “Not today they aren’t!” To be continued...

Etch barely escapes with his life. He pats the dashboard of OUTLAW and drives down the long dirt road trying to find the main road so he can get the hell out of the wooded area that is now catching fire due to the lightning strike. The storm is still severe and things look rough for Etch and OUTLAW. The jet black GTO launches from inside of the wooded area and roars onto the street at a pedal to the metal speed limit. The rain is pouring down and the windshield wipers are on high instead of low just to try and keep the mounting rain drops from impairing Etch’s vision. He switches his headlights to high beams to try and cut through the darkness caused by the immense rain storm. He tries to find something, anything, on his radio to find out about the weather conditions and how long it is expected to last. All the radio does is send out a sound of static and distorted noises that reflect how badly the
storm is affecting the region. “Damn! I can’t find anything on this stupid radio accept static.” Etch keeps his eyes peeled on the road. At this speed, any slight deviation with the steering wheel, will send OUTLAW off the road and into a ditch or the woods. Etch sees a little clearing in the storm clouds ahead of him and hopes that this severe weather will finally pass by leaving him in the daylight and headed back home without any more instances with the law. Etch keeps the pedal matted and heads down the road towards that cloud clearing where he sees a little shred of sunlight coming into view. The sun begins to shine through the diminishing cloud cover overhead while OUTLAW cruises down the back roads still trying to avoid law enforcement that may still be hot on Etch’s trail. The GTO starts to dry off as the skies begin to clear of the dark storm clouds. The rain has completely stopped
and the street puddles are starting to evaporate leaving dry pavement in its place. OUTLAW rides much easier on dry roads and streets a lot better than on wet roads and streets. Etch looks into his rear view mirror and sees no traffic or police cars behind him. No oncoming traffic and nobody following behind him. Etch is now looking for the nearest highway on ramp but that could be a long way off. As he drives through a four way intersection Etch glances to his right and sees two police cars approaching fast with their overhead lights flashing and sirens blaring. He mats the gas pedal and OUTLAW lunges ahead with accelerated speed.

1979 MAD MAX
Edited By ROB MAY “Imagine a world in which civilization has been destroyed by a nuclear holocaust. Who knows who started it…might have been a pissing match between two nations to see who had the bigger red button. Most of the United States is a barren wasteland. Gangs of raiders prey on travelers, while power-hungry despots rule over the weak and irradiated. Vast majorities of land are uninhabitable. In this world, there is a big event that happens at the end of September, a five-day period in which there is a temporary peace between the constant warring tribes. This time is a set aside to come together as one and celebrate another year above ground. A time of opening up trade, brokering treaties, revelry and turning a blind eye to the harsh embrace of the wastes.” This real-world event is called ‘Wasteland Weekend’ in California which occurs each year. California resembles the Wastleland in October with its raging the fires and typical summer overheat. Rob May from the Central California Mercury Club CCMC relays John Kreuz’s (known as the Mad Max Cat) Continued Next Page 54| Motorhead Magazine - November 2019

experience. John trekked from Illinois to California a while ago (2017) in his 1979 Mercury Cougar to offer UBER services in the Wastleland Weekend event. Out of about 172,000 1979 Mercury Cougars, only 5524 were built as four-door pillared hardtop sedans. Under the hood is a 351 Modified engine with a 2-barrel carburetor with a 3-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9 inch rear end. The car came standard without A/C, 14” steel wheels with deluxe wheel covers, a vinyl top, a passenger side remote side mirror, and the quarter windows on the C pillars. The Cat has manual vents, crank windows, no power locks, no cruise, no tilt, no frills, and no thrills. “The Mercury was a hit. I had plenty of people yelling out TAXI at me, and when I stopped, they were genuinely surprised that I was willing to pick
them up. We met new friends, reunited with old ones, and gambled at the Last Chance Casino. You face one way there is the rumble of engines, columns of fire shooting into the sky, live music and fun. When you turn 180 degrees, you are
staring off into the darkness. I would not hesitate to drive this cat ANYWHERE. To my Cougar I say, you have been witnessed. May you ride eternal, shiny and chrome.”

AUTOMOTIVE What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use. When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.
Visit us online at jandlcustomupholstery.com
A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Parts retailer.

12 VOLT NEWS Remote Starters and Security GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. REMOTE START SYSTEMS One of the most popular pieces of automotive technology is the remote car starter, and it’s easy to see why. People love the convenience of being able to start their vehicles from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Whether it’s freezing or sweltering outside, being able to step directly from your home into a climate-controlled car is a huge benefit for many. Waiting for the windshield to defrost or de-ice is no longer a consideration for anyone who makes this wise investment. A factor that many don’t take into consideration when purchasing a system, however, is the range over which it will be used. Of course, one’s home will be the area most often thought of, but work, family and friends’ houses and favorite shopping places are also important. Basic remote start systems have a limited range, so when deciding how wide the range should be, it’s always best to be thorough in your investigation.
ONE-WAY OR TWO-WAY? One-way remote starters operate the same as basic keyless entry systems. A button on the remote sends a command to the car that it’s joined with. With a two-way system, the vehicle will then send a communication back to inform the remote that the action has been carried out. This allows the driver to be certain that their wishes have been carried out, even if the vehicle is not in sight.
ternet capability and the phone in question must have Internet access, but if those two requirements are met, range is unlimited. A Custom Car Stereo offers a range of these products that work with both iPhone and Android phones. Like any data plan, there is a subscription fee associated with these systems, but it is nominal. We have a helpful, friendly staff on hand that can offer further information about these products.
SECURITY SYSTEMS A Custom Car Stereo Center stocks a wide range of vehicle security systems. With rising crime rates in cities all over the United States, it’s more important than ever to be able to monitor your vehicle. These systems allow the user to view all entry points of their car, as well as providing impact and motion sensors that sound an alarm when they are triggered. Our twoway or smartphone will send an alert to the owner, and smartphone users can even add GPS so they know where their vehicles are at all times. Even if theft isn’t a concern, this is a great boon for parents of younger drivers. At A Custom Car Stereo Center, we can install a security system for you by itself or as part of a package deal with a remote starter for the ultimate in comfort and peace of mind.
THE RIGHT CHOICE Simply buying the right products isn’t enough.
You need to purchase these systems from a trustworthy source that has skilled technicians that know how to install and set up security devices. Installation of these systems can be compared to performing surgery on a vehicle. If it’s done well, it will work reliably for years to come, whereas if it’s not, you could find yourself in an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation. Because we value your safety and comfort above all, A Custom Car Stereo Center is y trained on the most recommended methods for these types of installations. Our company prides itself not only on quality products but on quality work as well. For those who fear that installing these aftermarket systems will void their cars’ warranties, consider the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Passed by Congress in 1975, it guarantees that car manufacturers must honor their warranties even after the installation of non-factory parts. Please feel free to visit A Custom Car Stereo Center and we will do our best to find the solution that is perfect for your automotive needs. After a visit, you’ll see that it’s no mystery why we are the most preferred automotive security specialists in Rhode Island. Serving the Rhode Island since 1984, Auto Image prides itself on providing the finest in security and remote start systems. We always want to make sure that our customers are well informed about the products we offer.

DODGE CHARGER: THE EARLY YEARS The Charger made its debut in mid-1966. Sharing its chassis and front-end sheet-metal with the mid-sized Coronet, the Charger “still looked a lot like a Coronet or AMC’s conceptually similar Rambler Marlin ... [and] substantially more expensive than either. The Charger with a $3,100 base price “was immediately paired up in the automotive press with American Motors’ year-old Marlin, another fastback specialty machine that came in at around $2,850” and some called the Charger “a good-looking Marlin.” The Charger’s interior was different from all other cars with its pseudo-bucket back seats folded down to interior space accessible via the rear hatch. “The Charger didn’t begin with the performance/ muscle car image, though you could get a Hemi with it.” The Charger evolved into possibly the top Chrysler-made muscle car.
duction.
In 1966, Dodge took the Charger into NASCAR in hopes that the fastback would make their car a winner on the high-banks. However the car proved difficult to handle on the faster tracks because its body generated lift. Drivers would later claim that “it was like driving on ice.” To solve this problem Dodge installed a small lip spoiler on the trunk lid that improved traction at speeds above 150 mph (240 km/h). This was made a dealer-installed option in late-1966 and in 1967 because of NASCAR rules, making the ‘66 Charger the first U.S. production vehicle to offer a spoiler. (Small quarter panel extensions were added in 1967.) The addition of the spoiler helped David Pearson, driving the #6 Cotton Owens-prepared Dodge cars, to win the NASCAR Grand National championship in 1966 with 15 first-place finishes, though only one, the Capital City 300 in Richmond, VA, was achieved using the Charger.
On January 1, 1966, viewers of the Rose Bowl were first introduced to the new “Leader of the Dodge Rebellion”, the 1966 Charger. The Charger’s debut also followed by a half model year the introduction of a new street version of the 426 cu in (7.0 L) Chrysler Hemi engine. With the Charger, Dodge had a new model to build a performance image to go along with this engine. Designed by Carl “CAM” Cameron, the Charger introduced a fastback roofline and pot-metal “electric shaver” grille, complete with fully rotating headlights, a feature not seen on a Chrysler product since the 1942 DeSoto. In the rear the fastback design ended over a full-width six-lamp taillight with chromed “CHARGER” lettering. Inside, the standard Charger featured a simulated wood-grain steering wheel, four individual bucket seats with a full length console from front to rear. The rear seats and rear center armrest pad also folded forward while the trunk divider dropped back, which allowed for generous cargo room. Numerous interior features were exclusive to the Charger including door panels, courtesy lights, as well as premium trim and vinyl upholstery. The instrument panel did not use regular bulbs to light the gauges, but rather electroluminescence lit the four chrome-ringed circular dash pods, needles, radio, shifter-position indicator in the console, as well as clock and air conditioning controls if equipped. The dash housed a 0 to 6000 rpm tachometer, a 0 to 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer, as well as alternator, fuel, and temperature gauges as standard equipment. Engine selections consisted of only V8s. 1966 transmissions included a three-speed steering-column mounted manual with the base engine, a console mounted four-speed manual, or three-speed automatic. In 1966, four engines were offered: the base-model 318 cu in (5.2 L) 2-barrel, the 361 cu in (5.9 L) 2-barrel, the 383 cu in (6.3 L) 4-barrel, and the new 426 Street Hemi. Only 468 Chargers were built with the 426. Total production in 1966 came to 37,344 units for the mid-model year intro-
1967 The 1967 model year Charger received minor changes. Outside, new fender-mounted turn signals were introduced and this would serve as the main external identifier between a 1966 and 1967 Charger. A vinyl roof became available. Inside, the full length console was eliminated to satisfy customer complaints about the difficulty for entry and exit from the back seats. It was replaced with a regular sized console. Bucket seats were standard, but a folding armrest/seat and column shifter was an option allowing three people to sit up front. The 440 “Magnum” was added and the 361 cu in (5.9 L) V8 was replaced by a 383 cu in (6.3 L) engine. The 440 was rated at 375 bhp (280 kW) with a single 4-barrel carburetor. The 318 two-barrel “LA” Chrysler LA engine was now the base engine with wedge-shaped combustion chambers, unlike the previous 1966 polyspherical (or “poly”) design, it was rated at 230 bhp (170 kW). The 383 4-barrel rated at 325 bhp (242 kW) and the 426 Street Hemi rated at 425 bhp (317 kW) remained as options. A mere 27 Chargers were built with the 426 engine. Sales of the 1967 Chargers dropped to half of the previous introductory halfyear with a total of 15,788 units. According to automotive historian Patrick Foster, both the AMC Marlin and the very similar looking first generation Dodge Charger “flopped on the market as sporty car buyers were showing their preference for compact pony cars.” Source: wikipedia.com
