THE ZAMBARANO’S EFFORTS FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS With Breast Cancer Awareness Month being in October, Richard and Robin Zambarano, owners of Hope Service, an auto repair shop in Hope, Rhode Island, wanted to do a fundraiser. Their first thought was to just sell T-shirts at the shop and donate the money to a breast cancer
made. T-shirts were ordered to sell to customers, to the surrounding communities and to family and friends. They decorated the shop inside and outside with pink lights and breast cancer awareness decorations. It turned into a full fundraiser event in their parking lot on Saturday, October 16th. 100 percent of the T-shirt proceeds and the 50/50 raffle money went directly to The RI Chapter of the Pink Heals, a non-profit that raises money to assist men, women and children battling cancer.

Tri-State Cruisers Raise $20,000 for Hole In The Wall Gang Camp

We had a very late start this cruisin’ season due to terrible weather conditions and the lingering pandemic that kept most automotive enthusiasts at home instead of venturing out to car shows and
holiday weekend this past cruisin’ season. It poured all three days of Memorial Day Weekend. It poured all three days of the Fourth of July Weekend with temps in the lower fifties. During the month of July, it rained twenty-three days. It rained on and off again all three days of Labor Day Weekend.
It was amazing we had a car show season at all this year after the disaster year we had last year with a handful of automotive events taking place. Fortunately, August thru October were absolutely perfect for car shows. Most hosts were able to go until middle to late October to make up for lost events. Motorhead Magazine was at most of them along with the Buckleupallofus Balloon showcase attraction with 1,000’s of free Bucky coloring post-
ers, coloring books and fridge magnets for all of the kids. Tri-State Cruisers did a great job fundraising again this year and plenty of support came in from automotive enthusiasts to help the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp so very sick little kids could enjoy some campground fun and activities while forgetting about their illnesses for at least a little while during the summer months. Motorhead Magazine readers and Buckleupallofus kids and families are great supporters of charitable causes every cruisin’ season. See you all in April, 2022. Have a great and safe winter season!

The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first
was produced, but it also brought with it a whole new version of retro-fitted power.

The Apple Didn’t Fall Far From the Tree By LARRY QUINTAL Madison Bettencourt, the daughter of well-known mechanic Jay Bettencourt of Taunton, has shared the same passion of muscle cars as her dad since the day she was born. It all started in 1990 when Jay Bettencourt bought a 1974 Duster off a trailer for $50, the car was heading for the junk yard. This car was a 6-cylinder car with a seized engine not to mention the body had seen better days. Jay has made the Duster a supper fast machine powered by a 428 small block. It is a ten second car at NE Drag. I have personally ridden in this car and in my opinion, it ranks to be the fastest in the area. The pure rumble just makes your heart flutter. Most people in the Taunton and Raynham area know what I am talking about. Now on to “Lil” Miss Madison Bettencourt. Don’t let this pretty petite girl fool you, she has been working on cars with her dad for most of her life. Most girls would rather play with dolls, but not Madison, she had her car seat strapped into her dad’s car since day one. As a young girl she would hear dad’s car start and come running. Madison is studying to be a veterinarian, but I have a feeling that we will see her on weekends at NE Drag. She is a take charge kind of girl. She once took her dad’s rocket ship for a blast while he was not home (sorry mom, you did not know this story). She knew just what to do. What every gauge meant, how to turn on the fuel pump and so on, al-
though Jay was upset because of the sheer power of this car, he could not help to be proud of his little girl. At the age of 13 Madison was on the computer every day looking for a muscle car of her own, she looked at everything but fell in love with her orange matching numbers 1972 Duster with a 340 4 speed. I have seen her at car shows, and let me tell you, every head turns. A car as awesome as hers usually has a motorhead man driving it, but Madison can hold her own. She feels so lucky to have a dad like Jay, who has taught her everything about cars, not to mention if she can’t figure something out that needs fixing, dad can. Madison is proud of her dad, wherever she goes they will know her dad especially if they like Mopars. These days Jay can be found at Paul’s Custom Exhaust and Complete Auto Service in Taunton, MA where Jay is a great addition to the company. He brings many years of experience to the table. Jay is a cracker Jack especially on Mopars and older muscle cars. We at Motorhead wish Madison much success with her schooling and look forward to seeing her 72 Duster around town. By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA SEEKONK, Mass. -- Tri Track Open Modified Series officials released two more dates for the 2022 schedule on Tuesday evening, both at Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts. The third-mile will host the two annual Tri Track events again next season -- with the $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday set for Wednesday, June 29 and the Haunted Hundred set to return on Saturday, October 22.
In 2021, Matt Hirschman won the 16th annual Open Wheel Wednesday, becoming the first driver to win the race four times, while Chase Dowling dominated the Haunted Hundred en route to Victory Lane. TOYS FOR TOTS Charity Event JIM WEICHERDING Motorhead Magazine readers were the driving force behind last year’s successful Toys-For-Tots Charity Event. Everyone that had some toys for needy kids and read the article last November, brought literally, trunks full of toys and dropped them off to help the cause. They did it in Motorhead style too. They showed up in their classic cars. It was the largest turnout for this Toys-For-Tots Charity Event ever hosted at Sandy Motors located on Sandy Bottom Road in Coventry, Rhode Island. The other attraction was the live radio on-air broadcast and podcast heard across the area. We had people showing up with toys for the kids from as far away as Fall River and New Bedford, Massachusetts, Putnam, Connecticut and Burrillville, Rhode Island. These caring people said they read about the event in Motorhead Magazine and were listening to the live radio show and wanted to help give kids a great Christmas. Everyone received our gratitude and took home Buckleupallofus kids safety coloring cartoon posters and fridge magnets to give to their own children. This year’s Toys-For-Tots Charity Event will be hosted at Sandy Motors on Saturday, December 4th, from 10am until 2pm. DiPonti Communications will be broadcasting a live radio show during the event and Buckleupallofus giant balloon attraction will be on display for the kids reminding them to always Buckle Up! We will also have free give-aways for them to take home reminding them about their safety. This year’s Toys-ForTots Charity Event is Sponsored by Motorhead Magazine, Sandy Motors, Buckleupallofus, DiPonti Communications, Car Show Nationals and Children Across America. PROVIDENCE FIRE DEPARTMENT PARTNERS WITH FEARLESS DINO PROTECTOR SQUAD JIM WEICHERDING I attend more than one hundred community events, classic car shows and cruise nights across New England and New York State every year. Many of them include police officers and firefighters in attendance helping to heighten safety education and awareness for kids, teens and families by distributing thousands of my safety materials and products featuring a variety of safety tips related to each season and holidays as well as focus weeks and months recognized nationwide. Occasionally, related articles appear in Motorhead Magazine and every month we feature a Kids Safety Coloring Poster for kids to color in and display on family refrigerators, bedroom walls and in grade school classrooms. For the most part, these articles feature police officers. Well, many of the firefighters ask why there aren’t fire safety articles and coloring posters for the kids too. This month, there are both. With the holidays and winter season upon us, fire safety and burn prevention in the home are extremely important messages for kids and families. He actually still owns this cool classic Chevy. He originally got his start in the car world by working at his father’s carwash and towing business. Salem soon realized that he needed to find a shop of his own that could handle restoring the classic cars he was bringing in for work but always found that he was having trouble doing so. Karl’s East Coast...
40 Years of Speed
By Jim MCGwin Karl Volk has achieved amazing success in balancing family, racing and business. What started with giving a girl a ride to school in the late 60s became a 50-year marriage, that produced 3 kids and 6 grandchildren. What started as a quarter mile race turned into a 40-year marathon of a performance business lasting from 1981 through 2021. Continued on Page 38

Always known for “leaving good” at the dragstrip, an announcer began saying, “Here comes Quick Karl”, like the character in a 1970’s Marathon candy bar commercial. In response, Karl laminated a candy bar wrapper and put it on the front fender of his ’66 Dodge Dart, the same car that he had bought from his mother in 1968. Karl’s grandmother gave him money to buy the Dart, that his mother thought he ruined when he cut a hole in the hood. That car not only gave his friend, then girlfriend and now wife, Vivian, a ride to school, but it got her hooked on him and the thrill of drag racing as well. When following him in a friend’s car after Karl had won a street race in the early 70s, she was so excited that she tried jumping out of the car before it had stopped. Vivian planned their honeymoon to involve a trip to N.E. Dragway. The Dart also brought their first son, Karl, home from the hospital and his second son, Kevin, earned his NHRA competition license in it. The Dart, like the business has gone through many changes over the years. The progression in engines and technology in that Dart is symbolic of the progression of Karl’s family business, Karl’s East Coast Speed. Now with a “500” Mopar engine and tubular chassis, its best quarter mile time is 9.1 @ 149 MPH. Eventually the Dart took a backseat to his Fox Body that is a showcase for his ability to adapt to changing times and technology as well as the shops. Both cars sitting side by side are a culmination of his 40-year career in high performance. The 40 years, according to Karl, was, “More than just fun and games. Racing was a big part of everything. The business was our livelihood and had to pay the bills here at the shop and at home.” Karl continued “Many years were spent racing with the family on Sunday, while the other six days a week, involved long hours during the day and then going home to do the bookkeeping.” Karl said, “We had to weather a lot of storms which included two gas crunches. Gas lines were odd and even days based on your license plate. There were days the phone wouldn’t ring and there were no customers.” Karl said they shifted to Holley economizer carburetors and headers for pickups to get better mileage. weather was the credit union crisis of the early nineties when the State came to a halt and many people couldn’t access their money. “That was a bad time for us.” More recently, during the State road construction that lasted 3 years, every road around the shop was torn up and there were days you couldn’t get into the parking lot. Customers however always found a way, sometimes parking on the street to come and get a part that nobody else around had. But, according to Karl, there were plenty of good times as well. He said, “The crazy eighties when Reaganomics was raging, those were the best years. In the earlier days, nobody did a full build. We did engine swaps, made them run, and sent them on their way. People didn’t spend a lot of money at once. They’d be coming in every week. The speed shop was always a constant come and go. The Fox Body Mustangs in the early to mid-nineties got things going again and then there were the early 2000’s when the New Edge Mustang came out. A lot of guys were racing those cars. They would go to the track and then and drive home in 4.6 GTs with 5 speeds. We did all kinds of stuff to those cars.” The last big surge was the ‘05-10’ Mustangs that had a lot of boltons to add power. Karl said, “When the Coyote came out, most people were happy with 400 hp, we haven’t seen a 2020 or 2021 yet. They have the computer locked down so bad, you don’t want to touch it. But there have been a lot of nice cars that we had a lot to do with. Putting Kenne Bell superchargers on was a big thing. Turn a mild-mannered car into something crazy 800, 900, close to 1000 horsepower.” But Karl says his greatest accomplishment is, “The ability to do this for so long and enjoy it. I’ve always enjoyed the work but not so
much the business end of it. There is a lot of satisfaction in putting an engine together, seeing it run well, hold up for a long time and take a beating. It’s satisfying to see all the things we do to try to make them the best they could be with the budget available.” To most of his customers, Karl was the only guy they trusted with their cars or to work on their engines. He was the guy who had parts you could not find anywhere else. He was the best guy you could ask for advice, and if you wanted to do something and he didn’t think it was a good idea, he would tell you why. He is a true Master Engine Builder. Karl’s final words of advice come from something that has carried with him throughout life. It was something one of his high school teachers had written on the chalk board - “Knowledge dispensed daily, bring your own container.” Karl said, “I love that quote. It’s yours to take - you just have to put it in your container.” Karl still has that same 1966 Dart he bought from his mother in 1968. That Dart and his Mustang are symbolic of the progression of Karl’s East Coast Speed as a family business. And all those quarter mile races he; his sons and his customers have made turned into a 40-year marathon business. In doing so, Karl has achieved amazing success in balancing family, racing and business. What’s next? Karl said he needs to rest for a while “It’s been a long forty years here. This winter when we’re away for three months, I’m going to do some fishing, some sightseeing, relaxing and pay more attention to my wife and our new puppy. I won’t have to worry about business, just family.”

One of One, the Path to a Unique Wide-Body Lamborghini Gallardo By ALLEN HARRIS of the Executive Automotive Society In a quiet warehouse in Fitchburg Massachusetts, unique things are happening in automotive body work. You may not have heard of it. This place keeps a busy low profile most of the time. You may be mistaken to think this must be a new project, a new business. You would be wrong. This place has been around for a very long time, slowly growing and expanding their efforts to find out how customized a car can be. Today you’re going to read about one such project. The place is called Kustom Kreations and specializes in creating unique items for vehicles. Many of us encountered them in the usual fashion, after a fender bender. But if you’re a car guy that goes to big car shows and you paid attention you probably seen them before, in a big way. Their back wall is filled with giant trophies from many projects of the past. Some that have gone on to get national attention. So when a Lamborghini Gallardo entered the dedicated production area you just knew that this would be the next big thing. In stock trim the 2008 Gallardo Spyder is no slouch. A 5.0 liter V10 sits midship packing 520 horsepower at a nose-bleeding 8,000 rpms. All four wheels deliver power with a bias to the rear. From a stand-still it can run up to 62 mph in a face flattening 3.95 seconds and from then moves onto its top speed of 196 mph through a six speed gear box. Not just fast in a straight line the now elderly Gallardo can pull 1G of force in a turn. A force usually reserved for top tier performance cars. It’s also a rare breed, as only 581 Spyders were made that year. 3,353 total Spyders were produced over the entire 9 year production run from 2003 to 2012. So how do

you take a rare car and make it rarer while still keeping its purity? Simply put, it’s not an easy process as I would learn, but owner Matthew Heinecke was kind enough to take me through it. First the vehicle is 3D scanned. This is then put into a CAD Design so that the final look can be rendered. A plug is cut from a large foam billet, which is then coated in a foam safe resin. The plug is then re-machined, lightly sanded and primed to make the mold. Multiple layers of fiberglass can be added or, in the case of carbon fiber, the form is infused to finish the Continued Next Page
creation. Further down the chain the parts will be eventually painted and fitted just as a production level part would be and the dimensions are incredibly accurate. Parts can be made of just about anything and in any shape. Even in this case many different materials were used to customize it and from the look it would be very difficult to tell what was factory and what was produced. I know, it sounds like a complicated process and if I’m being completely transparent, it is. We spent hours just going over everything and in most cases I still don’t feel fully comfortable explaining what I witnessed
thoroughly enough to do it justice. As with any part, the one-off creation is intensive and rigorous with minute tolerances and variables, the description of which would require a dedicated and technical article. If you really want to see the entire process my recommendation is order a part. That being said, hopefully we’ll be able to write about it down the road. So, if I’ve made any mistakes I’d ask those experts out there to forgive me. When it was done, the Lamborghini was custom almost everywhere. Fenders, side-skirts, front bumper, splitters, wide-body door skins, rear duck
bill spoiler, quarter panels, rear bumpers, and the list goes on and on. Even the rear bumper grills were made of carbon fiber with custom mesh. No stone was left unturned, with each piece being crafted in both fiberglass and carbon fiber. After all was said and done the front was 6 inches wider in the front, 3 inches per side, and 12 inches wider in the rear, 6 inches per side. Outside the body work, a custom exhaust was installed with custom exhaust tips designed specifically for the build. With a wider stance the vehicle was equipped with 20” Rotiform wheels that filled out the void left in the arches nicely. The real beauty of the build, and in my opinion the true sign of great design, is at first glance you may not even recognized the craftsmanship. The first inclination is the feeling that something isn’t quite stock about it. Then the double take as you’re driven to make a closer inspection, and once you get up close the depth of the car alone is nothing like you’ve seen before. The perfect carbon fiber accents go a long way on any car, but on Lamborghini it’s almost a required installation, like a smile on the Mona Lisa. It’s evident that the car means business, like something out of a movie, its presence is undeniable. Like a great movie, every time you go back to review it again it seems to have another part you missed under first inspection. It’s massive size is difficult to take in on one sitting. So how much did this cost? Like anything exotic, if you have to ask… Was it worth it? I’m going to say, every penny. How much do many of us spend to have the perfect car? A dialed in set-up for many of us, the concept of looking unique, is very much priceless. There is no doubt that if you are considering something custom this is the biggest and best way to do it. Each part and piece made specifically for your custom project to your specific needs. No exceptions made. This is something similar to what you only see in Ken Block videos, but here it is in all its glory. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Kustom Kreations as the next big company that makes custom kits for many of the famous cars out there for those who do not consider price a hindrance to perfection and we’re looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us next and you should keep an eye out for this car and everything else coming out of their location in Fitchburg. No matter who you are, no matter what you do, you are part of a family. Everyone here at New England Dragway will help you out, share a snack, or offer advice. However, when the tree starts dropping everyone also has the same goal- WIN!! But after your run, once you make your way back to the pits everyone is family again and that makes the experience that much better. I’ve been a part of multiple points series at New England Dragway over the years, but the events I really enjoy are the small specialty races, such as the Steve Reis Memorial “Mustangs vs the World” Shootout. This event started in 2015 after an unfortunate accident took Steve’s life. Steve was an avid drag racing fan and enjoyed grudge type racing with his huge following of
friends and family. After his passing it was only fitting to carry on his beloved traditions of talking smack and enjoying some friendly competition. This year’s event had a great turnout, with the now famous ‘Stevie Mugs” up for grabs to just a handful of lucky competitors. The following racers got to raise their “Stevie Mug” victoriously and toast to the King of Grudge Racing… 13.00 INDEX- Representing the Mustangs of Massachusetts, Doug Burgess landed his 2007 Shelby GT500 in the Winner’s Circle right next to Steve Reis’ Shelby GT500. 12.00 INDEX- Veteran racer Norm Sirois captured one of the most meaningful victories of his career, having been a great friend of Steve Reis. also the first Winner to post a photo of his “Stevie Mug” full of ice-cold brew! 11.00 INDEX- One of the top competitors in the Real Street class, Patty DeCastro made her presence known, piloting her LS powered Mustang straight to the final and on to the Winner’s Circle. 10.00 INDEX- The Man they call “Back to Back” Jack would come in fresh off an Outlaw 10.50 victory the night before and continue to slaughter the competition. Jack Sandahl piloted through the biggest Index class of the day but stayed the course and captured his first ever “Stevie Mug”. 9.00 INDEX- This year was set to be the tie-breaker between two spectacular competitors that each held 3 wins in the 9.00 Index. Scott Erickson went three years in a row before Ken Samson would take the next three years. In 2021 Erickson would reign supreme. For 2022 we look forward to watching these two go at it again!! BRACKET CLASS- I had never met Bob Horgan before this race but while reviewing my photos from earlier in the day one of my favorite shots was Bob’s Firebird hanging the wheels high. A couple rounds later my four-yearold son (Motorhead writer Xander Yessaian) commented on how he loved Bob’s car because it does wheelies. Round after round Xander got to enjoy seeing the Firebird reaching for sky, until it eventually landed in the Winner’s Circle. Bob Horgan is your 2021 Bracket Class Champion.
JUNIOR DRAGSTER- In a field of 15 Junior Dragsters, Christopher Khoury fought off some tough competition to claim his first “Stevie Mug”. Along with the Trophy Mug, Christopher also collected a Junior Dragster Jackpot of 800.00 cash, collected during the tech in period that morning. Chris Pizzi’s Cutlass Eats Beantown Monte Carlos Like Oreos

Whenever I’m out and about searching for feature cars for Motorhead Magazine, there’s a few things that trigger my interest in someone’s ride. One of the things that almost instantly hooks me is when a vehicle owner tells me they started building the car before they even had a license. That
was the case for Chris Pizzi and what is now a showstopping LT4 powered 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Chris’ Cutlass actually came up from Nevada and had a very brief stay with the previous owner before having an unfortunate meeting with a telephone pole in Watertown, MA. A sad occurrence for that guy but an opportunity for Chris to grab the car of his dreams at an affordable price. Along with his father he tore right into it and replaced the whole front clip. From there, when he finally got his license, he drove the car “as is” for two more years. By 2004 he really wanted to turn the car into something special and began a frame off restoration. Then by the year 2020 it was time for another complete overhaul and that is when the current masterpiece was born. As a member of the Beantown Burners Muscle Car Club Chris knew he had to choose his drivetrain very carefully in order to stay ahead of some smack talking Monte Carlos. His weapon of choice became a supercharged LT4 that was already potent in stock form but received it’s share of goodies. Kong Performance ported the supercharger and snout and added a 2.3 Griptec 48| Motorhead Magazine - November 2021

pulley. A Nick Williams throttle body helping improve the inhaling chores and a TKO 600 transmission paddled by a Ring Brothers shifer helped put the power to the pavement. Out back a built Chevy 12 bolt posi rear end was stuffed with Moser axles and capped off with Wilwood disc brakes. Front brakes include slotted rotors and Wilwood six piston calipers. At this point the car could go and it could stop but could it carve up
corners the way Chris wanted? That’s when a full Hotchkiss setup made an appearance along with Ridetech coilovers. The next big dilemma was Continued Next Page
picking wheels. This was an excruciation decision for Chris because in my own opinion, wheels make or break a build and Chris knew there were some badass rides in the Beantown Burners Club to compete with. Personally, I think he knocked it out of the park, finishing off the aggressive stance with threepiece wheels from Forgiato and some extra sticky Nitto rubber. With the underpinnings accomplished and the mind-blowing blue metallic paint now polished to perfection, Chris moved onto the interior that, while acceptable, wasn’t off the charts like the rest of the car. He started with a full TMI seat skin set in the front and rear along with custom five-point harnesses. A Billet Specialties steering wheel hung from a tilt column and the Cutlass now roared to life by way of an Ididit push button start. If that magnificent LT4 isn’t enough music to STAR TIN AT G

NEW YORK MERCURY By ROB MAY and ZACH HAYES

Greene, New York is home for 29-year-old Zach Hayes and his 1978 Mercury Monarch. The car is enjoyed by Zach and his girlfriend Cloey. They take the Mercury all over New York for car shows, day trips, and weekend travels.
until 2005 when it was parked in the barn. When Zach bought the car, it had 71k miles on it. Parts were sourced to get it back up and going. While the parts were arriving, the Mercury received a tune up, the gas tank replaced,
Zach has been involved with cars as far back as he can remember including “from a young kid in the driveway watching my father and my grandfather who was a mechanic for a Sinclair service station in the 60s-70s.” Growing up always messing around with something with a motor helped him into a mechanic career at the local Ford dealer (Chenango Sales Inc). “It is a small shop of six mechanics, but it’s not the old stuff I grew up working on, but occasionally we get one in here.”
went through the brake system, and added new tires. “It was an effort to get it on the road and driving. The car was finally on the road June of 2021, as we had to wait for winters to be over.”
The Mercury was purchased in February of 2020 out of a barn a few miles up the road from Zach’s house. “An older guy, Lenny, in his 70s who does odds and ends around the shop, asked me if I wanted to buy a car?” Lenny stated it was a ‘78 Mercury Monarch. “At the time, I had no clue what a Monarch was, but said sold without looking at it.” That weekend they met up at a barn where the Mercury sat. Zach was amazed to see the car in such good original condition.
New York salt kills cars, so it is a summer car only. Zach has put close to 2500 miles on it this summer alone. “Since acquiring the car, I’ve kept it as original as possible.” Zach had plans to pull the motor and put in a stout 302, but after getting it running, the original 250ci inline 6 backed with a C4 trans runs way too good to pull out. “So it will stay in for as long as I can keep it going. As far as body and paint, it is all original along with the interior. “Overall, just a good cleaning was needed, and the car came right back around and now looks fantastic. Although a respray will be in the future just because aging cracking and some flaking paint.”
The Monarch was originally purchased in Johnson City, New York at a dealership Lenny worked at as a mechanic in May of 1978. The Mercury is as original as it could be, always serviced with Ford parts at a Ford
The Mercury is optioned as a base model. Not too many frills were added. There are simple gauges speedo and fuel is all. There are no a/c nor am/fm radio. However, the car has the full vinyl top and Continued Next Page

the nicer two-tone seats (that was not a common option at this trim level). “I think they really set the car off inside. Under the truck lid still sits the original truck mat and spare tire which is a space saving spare that is a folded tire on a rim along with an original can of air to inflate the tire, both are still intact with no sign of use in the past.” As previously stated, the car has a 250 cubic inch inline 6. That is mated to a Carter YFA single barrel, backed with a C4 auto trans, and 2:79 gears in the rear. “It is a good cruiser, alright on power, and good on fuel. This makes a nice car for long hauls across the state to see some friends. The motor is in original condition, as all I have done to it was a tune up and rebuilt the original Carter carb.” Zach drives his car at least 2 - 4 times a week. “It drives tight and rides smooth as glass. The Mercury feels like you are sitting on your lazy boy going down the road at 60 mph. A nice wood grain dash, chrome knobs and handles welcome you inside while looking out over the big hood ornament in front of you.”

Although I have not won any awards with the car yet, it does get a lot of traffic stopping and people looking at the car, talking and asking questions. During the winter months, boil-over protection might not be your highest priority.
Depending on where you live, freeze protection may quickly rise to the top of the list. If so, Evans Waterless Coolant has that covered, protecting your
cooling system down to minus 40° F. But there is something else going on that needs more attention than the effects of temperature. That would be the slow, silent, destructive force called corrosion. Evans Waterless Coolant features a waterless nitrite-free dual carboxylate formulation that prevents corrosion, and has a low electrical conductivity that minimizes electrolysis. Evans is stable and effective over long periods of inactivity, and provides lifetime service for classic, vintage, and high performance vehicles that may remain in storage without periodic circulation of the coolant.
electrical currents that flow from voltage differences that exist in the engine coolant jacket, the radiator, and the heater core. The damage can include rapid corrosion, pitting, flaking, and pinholes. The voltage differences may result from poorly grounded electrical equipment that has a stray voltage problem.
Another source of cooling system voltages is from the presence of dissimilar metals where the coolant is in contact. The metals need not be physically touching, as the engine coolant is the conductive path for an ionic transfer. The ionic transfer causes erosion and pitting of metal, or electrolysis damage. Regardless of the source of the voltage differences, the amount of current flow determines the damage potential. Coolant that is 50% water has an electrical conductivity of about 3000 μS/cm. In contrast, Evans waterless coolants typically measure just 700 μS/cm. The substantially reduced electrical conductivity of the Evans coolant sharply reduces incidents of electrolysis.
With standard 50/50 coolant, you can choose to drain the system out for the season, and blow air through to ensure the evacuation of all moisture. Then re-install fresh coolant again in the spring. Or, you can avoid the continual cycle of annual coolant replacement by using a waterless, non-corrosive coolant only available through Evans. The non-corrosive additives in Evans do not break down and will not drop out of solution over time.
Now back to that boil-over protection that you’re not thinking much about in the frigid weather. One of the outstanding features of Evans is its high boiling point of 375°F. Boil-over and the possibility of steam pockets in the cylinder head are eliminated. Without vapor, pressure is greatly reduced, relieving stress on hoses, seals, and gaskets. Steam pockets prevent efficient heat transfer, and results in cylinder head surface temperature spikes, and extreme thermal stress. Some “water-wetter” type products are designed to counteract water’s surface tension, which can reduce formation of steam pockets. Any additives, including those that can lower water’s surface tension in order to make the coolant more “slippery,” can wear out, and need to be replaced periodically. This is simply not necessary with Evans Waterless Coolants.

Thanksgiving Traditions JIM WEICHERDING Every year around Thanksgiving, I reflect back to when I was just a kid growing up and remembering all of the cool and simpler things in life without all of the technology and the fast paced life we all live with today. There weren’t computers, cell phones and hand held video devices like there are today. If you wanted to play a video or pinball game you would have to physically go to a game room or local restaurant, diner or tavern in your neighborhood. I wasn’t crazy about those types of games when I was growing up unless it had cars and trucks as part of the scenario. I’d much rather play pool or spend hours playing poker with my friends. When we turned fourteen and fifteen years old some of my friends turned their attention to real cars and trucks. I was immediately attracted to muscle cars and big trucks at a young age. Every Thanksgiving Day, my family came over to our house for a huge turkey dinner with all of side dishes that came with the holiday meal. I would sit

JIM WEICHERDING Gary Salzillo is the owner of Northeast Auto Body. He is also a great person. That is why he is our November Issue of Motorhead Magazine’s Good Guy of the Month feature article. It’s a pleasure to know Gary. We have spoken to each other a few times over the past year and half and he is definitely a car guy at heart too. He often helps community groups and charities across the state because he genuinely cares about community. He also cares about his customers and their families. He hosts an annual Toys-For-Tots Event at his place of business to help generate toys for needy kids and families. Gary and his family have a great time hosting their Toys-For-Tots Event and go all out with holiday themed costumed characters and Santa Claus for all of the kids attending with their parents. Fire trucks and rescue vehicles arrive with sirens blaring and overhead lights flashing influencing dozens of smiles on kids and adults faces alike. Holiday music plays and snacks are available for everyone attending. It’s a lot of fun for kids and families and Gary makes sure Toys-For-Tots receives plenty of toys for little kids on Christmas morning. Gary is definitely a Good Guy and not just for the month of November. He’s a Good Guy all year long.

The officers search around the parking lot for the Outlaw GTO and Etch but see no signs of the wanted muscle car and it’s owner. They proceed to their police cruisers, enter each vehicle, and exit the parking lot in different directions hoping to catch up with this wanted man and his power plant Pontiac GTO. They all know that this will not be easy to accomplish while acknowledging past experiences and recognizing Etch’s driving skills. They are not overlooked or dismissed by law
enforcement in the slightest. Etch has already exited the area and is cruising the speed limit down the New England country roads listening to the oldies on WBLQ’s Time Machine Radio Show broadcasted live from an automobile dealership located in Connecticut. The weather conditions are great and he is feeling like himself again when times were completely different than they are now. He was free to drive his classic GTO anywhere he wanted and everyone else

working on them.” During Marc’s senior year (1998), he bought a 1988 Ford Thunderbird Sport 5.0. “It was an all options car for $3,000. I didn’t really make any mods to it. Money was tight, and the ability to work on it was very low. The car only lasted a year before I got into an accident with it and tore the front bumper off. Ended up selling it for $500.” Fast forward to the story behind the ‘79 T-bird: “I often bugged my wife (who isn’t a car person) that I always wanted a classic car to tinker with. So when we bought our house in Londonderry with a garage, she finally caved. Last year during COVID 2020, but before prices went crazy, I cleaned the kids’ items out of the garage, broke down bought a shed, and went car shopping.” Marc gave himself a budget of only $6500-7000 for a car. “Living in New England you only look for two things while looking for an old car - Rust and Rust. So, in my price point there isn’t much in half decent ‘rust free’ cars. I am a very impatient person and obsess about things. When I saw this ‘79 T-bird on the FB marketplace for only $5000 with only 48k miles, I jumped on it.“ When Marc bought the car, it was still rocking its OE belts, hoses, and vacuum lines - all dated from 1978. “For safety, I replaced all of them. In its past life, there were mods done under the hood. It was de-smogged, a 4-barrel intake was installed, and the timing chain was replaced. “Luckily all my updates have been able to be accomplished by myself. The car has only been to a garage twice for undercoating and a custom exhaust. Eric’s Custom Exhaust in Merrimack, NH removed the 41-year old cats and added 2 ¼ inch stainless steel H pipe to Flowmaster FX mufflers with no tips.”
changes. “I can’t drive the car to work, so she sits until I get home from work or wait for the weekends. Luckily living in south NH I can find cruise nights or cars-and-coffee pretty much every day of the week. By November, she goes down for her nap until spring. I will take it out in the winter if its dry pavement.” “This is the oldest car I have own, so I can’t compare it to anything else. It is a nice ride that is not floaty like it should with the helper shock springs in the back. The T-Bird is different than other cars on the road. These where extremely popular cars back in the late ‘70’s, but now are essentially gone. My favorite style of the car is how the back side glass sits above the door glass. Everyone loves the roll-up headlights. Being only 40 and having a car from the 70’s is odd, a lot of people I see aren’t going down the classic car route anymore.”
This year, the bottom half of the car was painted. “The car was all 8W Chamois Glow Metallic, but I found a hole below the chrome molding. The body shop wasn’t comfortable trying to match the 40-year old sun-bleached paint, so I had it painted 8N Dark Cordovan Metallic. It’s the same color of the factory hand painted pin stripe going down the car.” A tune-up included updating belts, hoses, alternator, radiator, radio, speakers, and ignition module. All of the weather stripping was replaced. (doors, roof, trunk, and hood). For the interior, Marc had to change the heavy shag carpet and swap out the steering wheel (the old one would stab him every time he turned the wheel. The car is a stripped-down version, but with weird options featured. The Marti report listed the T-Bird as a 1 of 1,407 built like this out of total 279,000 built for 1979. Most of these T-birds from this era weren’t ordered by the dealership for their lot. Instead, 90% of these cars were optioned out by the original buyer. “My car has zero power options besides the sport gauge cluster. It has the upgraded paint, but no A/C. It has the upgraded interior and exterior package, but no cruise control.” Both the 351W and 3-speed FMX transmission are original to the car. They are mated to a highway friendly 2.47 rear gearing. “I might be replacing that to 3.25 if the wife allows. Lol. This winter I will be replacing the cheap front shocks someone installed to KYB’s.
