TOP FUEL HARLEY:
US NATIONALS 2022
By TOM McCARTHYThere is no bigger race in drag racing than “The Big Go,” the NHRA US Nationals. From August 31st through September 5th, 2022 the Dodge Power Brokers NHRA US Nationals thundered through Indianapolis, Indiana for six consecutive days, much to the delight of close to 50,000 National Hot Rod Association fans that attended the event.
During the event, the NHRA Top Fuel Harley class was in attendance as a dozen TFH teams entered the competition.
On Friday evening, September 2nd qualifying for the 68th, NHRA US Nationals commenced, close to 5:35 PM. During the first qualifying session, one of three on the weekend run schedule, the initial low qualifier was Jay Turner in the #1 qualifying position with a 6.35 elapsed time. Other runs during the first session included: 2) Tii Tharpe 6.47, 3) Ryan Peery 6.50, 4) Ricky House 6.81, 5) John Toth 6.88, 6) Chris Smith 7.76, 7) Mike Balch 8.60, and the bump spot on Friday, 8) Billy Jackson 8.91. Racers who did not qualify on Friday
included: Randal Andras 10.58, Bob Malloy 26.94. Racers Jim Martin and Jake Stordeur did not make a pass during Q-1 Friday eve ning.
The Saturday Q-2 session was slated to kick off at 12 noon followed by the Q-3, final session to commence at 3:35 PM. But Mother Nature intervened. Just after the Nitro Harleys warmed up at 11AM, the rain began and a 2.5 hour delay set the whole NHRA Saturday program into up set. This caused the TFH class to run it’s second and only remain ing qualifier at 9:30PM, Saturday night. With over 930 racing teams on the property, there are only so many racing hours in the day, and NHRA was forced to drop one TFH qualifying session.
The Saturday night session totally shook up the mix with Bobby Malloy snatching low qualifier with a 6.22 elapsed time. This landed Jay Turner in the #2 spot with his 6.35 standing tall. The other six qualifiers in order:
Randal Andras 6.36, Tii Tharpe 6.39, Ryan Peery 6.50, Rickey House 6.57, Jake Stordeur 6.78 and John Toth on the bump with his 6.88
from his Q-1 landing him in the field for the 68th running of the NHRA US Nationals. The ladder was set with - Malloy Vs Toth, Tharpe Vs Peery, Turner Vs Stordeur, and Andras Vs House.
The T/F Harleys began their eliminations at 10:30 on Sunday morning, September 4th.
Jay Turner of Liberty, NC shows off his winning form on his Top Fuel Harley he constructed at his shop Jay Turner Racing. Jay Turner was all smiles after winning his first ever NHRA, US Nationals trophy, one of the most coveted trophies in all of drag racing.Bobby Malloy, low qualifier, blew up 30’ from the launch and thought he was all done. His opponent, John Toth, took out a timing block during his pass and because this is a safety violation, Toth was immediately disqualified and this gave the round win to Malloy.
The next pair out was slated to be Jay Turner racing Jake Stordeur, but Jake had a cylinder head problem from his Q-2 lap, late the previous night and could not make the call to the lanes. Jay’s compe tition single produced a 6.29 @ 222 MPH per formance.
Tii Tharpe then matched up against Ryan Peery for what was sure to be a tough race. Ryan’s 6.38 effort was a stout number, but the former NHRA TFH champion Tii Tharpe delivered a 6.33, advancing Tii to the semi-final round of the 68th, NHRA US Nationals.
In the final pair of the eight bike qual ified field, Randal Andras took on the always tough Rickey House. Randal jumped out first with a .159 RT to Shar key’s .163, and they put on a great sideby-side show for the fans, all the way down track. Randal’s 6.32 to Rickey’s 6.44 was just what Randal needed to advance the semi’s where he now faced Jay “Bull Dog” Jay Turner.
During the semi-final round parings, Jay Turner defeated Randal Andras with a lightening quick 6.27 to Randal’s very game 6.36, to send Jay to the finals. Bobby Malloy had a competition solo as Tii Tharpe could not make the round call.
After two round of racing, the rains again washed out the remainder of the Sunday program and racing was forced to conclude on Monday, Labor Day, Sep tember 5th.
Well into the afternoon hours, the final pair of Top Fuel Harleys rolled to the line, with Bobby Malloy and Jay Turner set to see which one of them would become a first time NHRA US Nation
als event winner. Despite decades of racing between them – Malloy since the 1970’s and Jay Turner, who started racing nitro Harleys in 1989 prior to September, 2022, neither of them personally had previously won the prestigious NHRA US Nationals.
When they launched into history, Jay’s .053 RT was tic quicker than Bobby’s .065 and Jay’s 6.225 @ 220 MPH was what he needed to trailer Bobby’s 6.384 @ 194 MPH. For the Bull Dog, from N.C. it was his first win at the Big Go and it certainly was a big one!
1320 Life is what Top Fuel Harley racing requires of its racers. This is not for the meek. Bobby Malloy of PA, had a significant blast shortly after his launch during the first round of eliminations during the US Nationals, but was ready for his next round of competition. He ultimately became the runner up for this event. (L) Tii Tharpe, takes out Ryan Peery in the (R) lane during E-1 action of the 68th running of the NHRA US Nationals.GEARING REALITIES!
BY DaVE MCCLaINA few years back a new customer came to me with a pretty interesting issue. He drives 2014 Camaro SS, 6 Speed Auto, 2800 RPM Stall Converter, Long Tube Headers, and a basic canned tune. Motor was a classic bolt on build. His issue started when he decided to go from 3.27 stock gears to 3.45 gears. To his surprise his car ran pretty close to exactly 12.1 – 12.2 in the quarter mile and didn’t pick up any more elapsed time or mph over the stock gears. He later decided to step up to 3.91 rear end gears and his car ran the same 12.1 – 12.2 in the quarter mile. I decided that the first step
would be to put the car on the dyno and verify the quality of the tune. After just a 3 hp gain over the canned tune, I told Dave that I think he over geared the car. I explained to him that as he added gear the car fell higher into the power band after each shift, where the stock camshaft was dropping off. After my analysis, I suggested that we add a Custom VVT cam to his car.
A few weeks went by and Dave decided that he wanted me to change his camshaft, but told me he wanted the car to idle and run smooth while increasing power for the track. He also wanted it tame enough to go out with his wife without shaking her out of the car. Along with a mild Custom VVT camshaft, we added a set of GMPP LS3 CNC ported cylinder heads and upgraded valve springs. The custom cam was under 220 degrees intake duration and idle nicely at 700-750 rpm. Due to the VVT system in the L99 automatic Camaro SS we are limited by piston to valve clearance, but we we able to get enough camshaft in the car to gain 82 RWHP at 6500 rpm. Dave’s Camaro gained nicely, 412 RWTQ
and 433 RWHP. The custom camshaft turned on at around 2950 rpm and pulled nicely 6700 rpm with little drop off. Dave’s car now runs a consistent 11.6 – 11.8 @ 118 -119 MPH in the quarter mile depending on track conditions and weather. Dave bracket races the car and loves the consistent performance. He has recently won a $2000 prize at one of the events at Lebanon Valley, New York and a couple races at New England Dragway. Most people delete VVT, but as you can see you can transform the performance of the Gen 5 Camaro and still maintain good street manners.

JIM WEICHERDING
The state police cruiser is hidden behind a highway billboard in the middle of nowhere USA. The night shift is so long and boring. To stay awake and alert throughout the night, coffee and chocolate glazed donuts are always on the menu. It has been over three hours since the rookie police officers have seen any vehicles pass by them with their radar gun fixed and aimed at anyone that may be exceeding the speed limit.
A big rig suddenly appears out of the darkness followed by a classic muscle car putting both police officers on high alert. The radar gun turns red hot and the officer tosses it out the side window yelling that it burnt his hand. He watches the radar gun melt into the dirt and turn into a black mud and ooze before vaporizing into thin air.
“What the hell was that all about?” The police officers look at each other before activating the overhead lights and sirens. The cruiser starts pursuing the big rig and muscle car on the open road at top speeds. Both spill coffee on their uniforms and inside the patrol car. “Damn, that’s hot!” Do nuts fly out of the box and land everywhere inside the patrol car. The cruiser is closing in on both vehicles with lights
flashing and sirens blaring.
“What are they doing? Can they see and hear us?” All of the vehicle windows are tinted on both the big rig and muscle car. They continue traveling at a high rate of speed with the cruiser in hot pursuit.
“Should we radio dispatch for assistance?”
The radio is static only. They cannot reach dispatch. No help is coming. It’s just them and whoever is driving those two vehicles on this open highway. The police officers are dumbfounded and shocked by the lack of respect for the rules of the road and the law.
The big rig and muscle car continue their fast paced attempt to elude the police.
“This reminds me of that Smokey and the Bandit movie. Bootleggers loved traveling this highway during prohibition driving trucks and fast cars delivering alcohol from city to city at night.”
As the vehicles approach a city with lights eluminating from the blackness the big rig and muscle car begin to slow down in front of the police officers. “Finally. They decide to pull over for us.” All vehicles gradually pull over to the side of the high way and stop. Trying to wipe the spilled coffee from their uniforms, the police officers exit the patrol car and approach the big rig and muscle car driver side
windows. They both tap on the side windows with their flashlights. No response. They tap again. Still, no response. Both remove their pistols from their holsters commanding the drivers exit their vehicles with hands raised in the air. The police officers have no idea what to expect from these drivers.
Suddenly, a big rig and classic muscle car race past them on the other side of the roadway at a high rate of speed. Both vehicles are identical to the vehicles they just chased for miles and eventually were pulled over. The police officers watch as the taillights on the two new vehicles vanish into the darkness driving in the opposite direction. They look at each other, then turn to address the two vehicle drivers they just pulled over. They are gone. Both vehicles and drivers disappeared into the dense, black, night air. The big rig and muscle car are no longer there.
Both police officers look at each other completely baffled before running back to their police cruiser, put up the windows and lock the doors. “What do we do now?” asks one of the rookie police officers. “I don’t know about you, but I’m switching to decaf from now on!”
The End?
ANNIVERSARY COLLECTIBLES
By ROB MAYFill your museum with Mercury collectibles. Known for Cougar Collectibles, this issue will focus on a wider range of Mercury cars from the May museum including Mercury’s larger vehicles. Georgina Garcia May Photography
provides a glimpse at what should be added to your collection! Let’s celebrate the 1941, ’46, ‘51, ’56, ‘61, ‘66, ‘71, ’76, and more years of the Monterey, Maquis, Cyclone, Montego, Monarch, and Comet cars.
Paper items including postcards, brochures, and magazine ads are one typical addition. These range from vintage Mercury to more recent. The older ads tend to be oversized compared to today’s typical magazine dimensions. Full size double wide ads are even more impressive.
Plastic and metal miniatures are another sought out memorabilia category. 1961, 1966, and 1971 Mercury cars tend to be available and the most common on sites such as Ebay. Certainly, other years are available too. On the harder to find side, we see the NEO made 1976 Marquis 2-Door Hardtop (1/43rd).
AMT produced both prebuilt 1/25th scale “Promo” models as well as
assembly required plastic model kits. The promos command high dollars and detail features of the new model each year. Some of these were friction powered. Original issues and re-issues of the glue together models are available. Kits often featured stock, racing, and custom parts.
The May museum favors vintage over modern; however, it appreciates any Mercury collectible. Modern items include Johnny Lightning’s 1951 Convertible and 1971 Montego along with Hot Wheels (’56 Mercury). While Hot Wheels has been produced other scales, they are usually associated with 1/64th scale. JL also produces 1/64th.
While cars dominant the market, trucks are not to be ignored!
Sylvan’s 1946 Mercury Pickup truck in HO train scale is one of the smaller Mercury collectibles available. M2 produced a modern version of the 1956 Truck in 1/64th size.

By XANDER YESSAIANOn the morning of September 10th, while most kids my age were probably home playing video games or staring at their iPad, your little buddy Xander was standing beside his friend Bob Tasca
3rd as Bob prepared to fire up his 11,000-horsepower funny car to amaze the crowd at the 25th Annual Tasca Mustang and Live Music event. Continued Next Page
JET Mustangs was also on display, including the 50th Anniversary COBRA Jet, which I got to “drive” just days after its arrival to TASCA. According to Carl Senior, “the whole point of this show is to let people see these cars, they need to be driven, they need to be raced, so I really enjoy meeting people at this show that tell me they bought their car from our dealership. It reinforces my father’s original philosophy of treating customers like family”.
Throughout the show field it was amazing to see the personalization of many cars and trucks that quite possibly left the TASCA lot as brand-new cars at one point in their existence. Being a huge fan of this show it is just a matter of time before I have something of my own to enter into the show!! If you’re a regular reader of MOTORHEAD you remember my 1990 Lincoln LSC 5.0 that unfortunately went on to bigger and better things, so I’m on the hunt for a new ride that I will be building together with our readers. By next year you could see me rolling into the TASCA show with either a 1993-95 Lightning pickup or a 198788 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe!! I have my eye on a couple decent prospects so over these upcoming winter months we might have a new series of articles documenting the build. Stay tuned Motorheads and look for me at next year’s TASCA Mustang and Live Music Event!!
Although I am currently only five years old, this show has already become a tradition for me and I have not missed a single one, as documented by my annual photos with Bob Tasca 3rd and his family’s collection of rare Ford cars. One very cool vehicle at the show was Bob’s first Mustang GT, my dad especially enjoyed this car because he remembered it being around the TASCA dealership when he was a kid. Considering many people never see their first car again, this was a unique piece of TASCA family history.
Also on display is Tasca’s 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition car, which I was lucky enough to enjoy when it was brand new. Thanks to Carl Tasca Senior, I was probably the only two-year-old kid at that time to have sat in and “driven” a multi-milliondollar FORD GT supercar!! And speaking of my good friend Carl Senior, his collection of COBRA
The elderly gentleman slowly walks out of his home, with the support of a cane, to confront a flatbed truck driver that has backed up into his driveway directly behind his midnight black antique hot rod. Softly asking the driver why he is backed up to his vehicle.
“You owe the bank money and they sent me here to repossess your car. You haven’t made a payment in over six months.”
The elderly man looks at the driver, “I am living on a fixed income. This is all I have to drive myself and my sick wife to doctor appointments, pick up scripts, run errands or go grocery shopping. Please don’t take my car. It’s all I have. We don’t have any family left to care for us. I bought this car brand new when I was a teenager.”
The elderly man puts his trembling hand on the drivers door and stares at the flatbed truck driver. “That’s not my problem. Pay your debts and maybe you can get your car back from the impound lot. It is going to cost you even more money every single day it’s parked in that lot and nobody will guarantee it looks this good, if and when, you ever get it back.”
The elderly man begins to cry as his car is dragged by chains and secured onto the back of the flatbed truck. He can barely stand and support himself with his cane. He watches as his cherished hot rod travels down the road headed away from his home on the back of that flatbed truck.
The flatbed truck driver travels through the country backroads eventually arriving at the impound lot at the edge of town. He backs his rig up to the main gate and honks his horn for service. “What do you want?” asks the impound lot employee. “I need to drop off this vehicle as a repo for unpaid debts. I have the paperwork right here.”
The impound lot employee walks up to the driver door. “What vehicle? I don’t see any vehicle. Your truck is empty.” The flatbed truck driver jumps out onto the ground, almost falling to his knees in shock. He stares at the empty space that once held the elderly man’s antique hot rod.
“What the hell?” He looks down the road he just traveled, looks behind his rig, then under his rig. “What in the hell are you looking for under your rig buddy? Cars don’t vanish into thin air.”
The flatbed truck driver jumps back into his rig and speeds off back to the elderly man’s home. He sees the antique hot rod parked in the driveway and slams on the brake pedal coming to a complete stop. Baffled, he calls the bank to confirm the vehicle repo destination address he has on his paperwork. They tell him that six previous attempts to repo that vehicle have all failed.
The elderly man stands next to his antique hot rod now smiling at the driver. The flatbed truck driver, speaking to the bank manager on his cell phone replies, “I can’t repossess this vehicle for you either. It’s already possessed and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon!”

By Nick OneppoIt all began in 1954 when I was nine years old, I was bitten by the car bug. Back then, the only way to get a sneak preview of a new car was to go to the dealer’s lot on a weekend in hopes that one was hiding in the back of the building. Thank God my dad was just like me.
My very first car, after I learned to drive in my dad’s ‘55 Country Squire was a 1952 Ford flathead I got for $200. At the time, I lived in Providence, RI on Federal Hill and nobody had a garage, so weekly polishing was what I loved to do to keep the Ford looking good. From there, I’ve had many cars over the years...’58 Ford Convertible, ‘64 1/2 Mustang (new), ‘67 T-bird and many others. Years later, I bought a brand new 1971 Toyota Corolla 1600 Coupe followed by a string of Japanese cars and then soon went back to American vehicles. In 1986, I bought my first old classic, a 1955 Thunderbird that was completely restored (Thank God because I am no mechanic).

In 1991 the banking crisis happened and I was up to my eyeballs in the credit unions, and I needed money. I was forced to say goodbye to the 55 Bird to put some cash in my pocket. Thankfully, I recovered financially and in 1996 I was hungry for another classic. I came across an ad for a 1964 T-bird convertible and on a rainy night in ‘96, it became mine for $9,000.
My dedicated wife, Cathy, of 50 years this October has been a major part of the equation to provide me with a fami ly, including three wonderful children and the understanding of an automo tive enthusiast to allow this sport to prevail all these years. Now, with seven beautiful grandchildren, cruising in my ‘64 Thunderbird gets even better by the day. The $9,000 “bargain” is no longer a vehicle that gets towed home after
The convertible top mechanism, which stores in the trunk area of the car, is quite elaborate but now works flaw lessly. The power steering system is a known nightmare on the mid 60’s T-birds for steering feel and sensitivity, being disproportional to steering wheel move ment - but now feels and handles perfect ly, with the braking system also very comfortable. The swing-away column now works like fac tory with the shifter detents feeling right (does not slip out of Park AND the parking brake works!) Held at the Spencer Fairgrounds on Smithville Road, Spencer, MA, it’s a great time and a great event to to go if you’re into vintage Japanese motorcycles. We recommend looking into vintage bikes as a hobby, we had a great time!
ABOUT RICE-O-RAMA:
The ONLY Japanese motorcycle show and meet in New England keeps outgrowing its venues. More and more folks are coming from further and further away for a great time and to see some of the greatest bikes anywhere. This is more than your average bike event, this is something special that you look forward to all year. A family event for all people who love motorcycles and cool contraptions. There’s some GREAT stuff --- Cafe racers? Check. Twostroke street bikes? Check. Sandcast CB750s? Check. Antique Indian Chiefs?
Check. ‘70s atvs? Sparkle helmets? Evel Knievel lunch boxes? Jesus Toasters? Porsche powered trikes? It’s all here and more. You’ll probably spend a lot of time pointing and smiling. There’s stuff at RICE-O-RAMA that you just don’t see anywhere else. Bring a camera, because we promise you’ll never see some of this stuff ever again!
There’s a fantastic bike show, with trophies up for grabs for every class of bike...more classes this year for mild and radical customs. As always there are dozens of classes for restored and original classics both stock and custom. Plan ahead for next year and come see more than a hundred bikes on display from tiny 50cc tiddlers to radical choppers and racers. There are dirt bikes, drag bikes, street bikes,
touring bikes, cruisers...all kinds of bikes from antiques to the latest thing. Singles, twins, fours, triples, sixes, turbos, 2-strokes and more. That’s
1971 Comet Collectibles
By ROB and GEORGINA MAYFrom the May museum, Georgina Garcia May Photography offers a glimpse at a few of the collectibles available for one of the smaller but very important Mercury rear drive cars. No, we have not forgotten about the Bobcat. Those will appear in our future collectible article. Typical items for the Comet (sharing the Maverick stable in 1971) include brochures, magazine articles, postcards, and match book covers, models, and diecasts. As usual collectibles range from vintage to modern.
Original advertising paper products are popular to add to one’s museum and not expensive to acquire. Magazine ads are neat, especially two-page sizes. Note the use of the same photo on one of the matchbook covers that is also seen on a postcard. Brochures show updates to each Mercury

Miniatures in plastic are great 3D pieces. The plastic collectibles are the higher end of the value spectrum for 1971 Comet collectibles and typically vintage. Palmer (1/32 scale) kits are known more for their art on box lids than form fit pieces. Although, they did offer a fun upgrade over

Modern metal miniatures, in 1/24th scale, were produced by MotorMax. These were offered in various colors and different packaging. Not shown, is a primer painted version meant to be a project car display or to be painted as desired. Boxed versions always worth more than loose versions, and again sealed better than unsealed. DEMON SERIES
Viking Motorsports Brings Heads Up Action to NE Dragway
ED YESSAIANPhotos by PrimeTime Video and Photo
With the tremendous success of his annual Ford vs Chevy Shootout, Scott Erickson decided to extend his program to a four-race series. The first race was canceled due to weather conditions, but the second race promised to bring back all the excitement of heads-up racing and it definitely did that. The usual suspects made their appearances but quite a few new faces also made their debut on Sunday August 28th. The groups were split into two divisions: Street Demon and Track Demon, giving all competitors a fair shake at the prize money. A poker chip

TRUETT & OSBORNE BIKE DRAGS
TOM McCARTHY STORY and PHOTOS
On the weekend of August 20-21, 2022, the 50th running of the Truett & Osborne Bike Drags commenced at Kansas International Dragway, in Maize, Kansas. It was a race to remember given to a tradition that has spanned five decades.
It all began during the latter half of the 1960’s era, when motorcycle drag racing was really starting to take flight. Motorcycle drag racer Bonnie Truett and his street racing partner, Paul Osborne, got together and opened a speed shop for hot rodding Harley Davidson motors. They created stroker kits to add cubic inches to Harley Davidson motors. Bonnie Truett, being a talented welder/fabricator, began making light weight aircraft tubing chassis for Sportsters and the new Shovel-Head Harley “Big Twin” motors of the day. Bonnie also offered full rolling chassis, along with other light weight go fast parts like custom oil tanks and built in fuel cells, integral to the frame. At the start of the 1970’s as their business enterprise took off, they interacted with local drag strips and by 1972, the Truett & Osborne Bike Drags became an annual staple to Mid-Western motorcycle drag racing. The biggest names in M/C drag racing history have all been to, and raced at, the T&O Bike Drags. Granddaddy Joe Smith, Pete Hill, Marion Owens, Elmer Trett, Bonnie Truett just to name a few.
Honoured guests at the 2022 rendition of the T&O included, Paul Osborne, Marion Owens and family, Pete & Jackie Hill, Dale Nungesser, Mike Pillars of the T&O drag racing events, spanning some 50 years, (L-R) Dale Nungesser, Paul Osborne, Marion Owens and Mike Bahnmaier. Tony Ruggiero, of California torches a cylinder-head during qualifying for the 50th Truett & Osborne drags @ KID, on August 20th 2022.Bahnmaier and more. These Harley Davidson drag racing greats spent time during the weekend signing autographs, telling stories of days gone by and discussing all things nitro Harley with fans and friends.
It was an interesting mix of racers and machinery to be sure. Single engine gas Sportster drag bikes that could weigh in at just under 300 pounds, race ready, to 700 pound, ponderous double engine Shovelhead vintage T/F bikes, like the one Red Roberts of Texas rode to victory in the Nostalgia class.
Top Fuel was run as a “Top Fuel Open” class so the more modern Top Fuel Harleys could run in the mix. Mitch Brown, of Monster Race Products fame won that class while racing the motorcycle built and tuned by Johnny “Red” Rhea. As an added treat for the fans, Mitch Brown brought out the Dennis Bradley Plumbing Top Fuel bike. The current national #1 plate holder in Top Fuel motorcycle, Mitch, with assisted tuning by Todd Martin, managed to put three-foot flames into the early evening air with a solo exhibition pass on Saturday evening.
For two days the fans got to experience 1970’s style racing and the mix of vintage and modern day machines. Nitro Harleys, double engine bikes, and in contrast, modern day Pro Mod type gas bikes as well as the usual mix of today’s bracket bikes.
Winners included: in Top Fuel or for this event “Open Fuel” class of racing, Jordan Peterson of Titonka, IA, was the #1 qualifier with a 5.97 elapsed time. Mitch Brown, piloting the Johnny Red Rhea, PTS Racing Top Fuel bike thundered to victory over Dusty Werner during the final race of the day.
In the T&O “B-Fuel” class, Rocky Jackson of Youngsville, Louisiana was not only the #1 qualifier, but Rockstone, rocked the house by wining the event for the carburetted nitro Harley
bikes. Hat’s off to JW Webb for his R/U placement in B/Fuel.
Top Gas Push-Rod class was inhabited by a variety of tricked out gas burning Harleys. John “Jet” Peek of Houston, Texas who qualified #1, then won the event, over Louis Sansone on his Nitro Bums racing machine – what beautiful bikes!
In Top Gas Open, a class with anything running racing gas, in any configuration, the winning racer of the day was Austin Wagoner, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on his tricked out Kawasaki, over the beautiful green machine of Eric Schlup, of Emporia, KS.
Other winners included Phil Snare (W-Bracket 1),
engine Shovelhead, nitro Harley. Jeff Williams of Texas was the R/U. Mitch Brown, piloting the PTS Top Fuel Harley out of Nashville, TN took the win on Top Fuel Open thanks to tuning by Johnny Red Rhea and his 40 + years of experience. On Saturday, during the 50th running of the T&O Bike Drags, Mitch Brown, piloting the Dennis Bradley Plumbing/Monster Veteran Top Fuel Harley racer Red Roberts of Texas rode his old double engine Shovelhead to victory in the Nostalgia class.Jet Cars Under the Stars
By MARK L aBRANCHEOn July 30th at New England Drag way was the NH Lottery & O’Reilly Auto Parts Jet Cars Under the Stars.
This has been an ongoing tradition at New England Dragway for decades. This year was amazing to say the least. What did you not see is the big ques tion? You had jet trucks, jet dragsters, a wheel stander, you had school bus racing, you had a pro stock sled that went 4.93 in the 1/8 mile, you had an 800 cc sled running 5:40’s in the 1/8 mile, you had qty. 16 drag bikes that were all under 7 seconds in the ¼ mile, you had a 16 car box shootout and 16 no box car shootout.
NH Muscle Car Club had a car show with over 350 cars. There was food, drinks, shirts, toys, and souvenirs for the kids. Did they miss anything? There were two rounds of exhibition cars and several rounds of other class es to keep you in your seats all night long. How about some names of these you ask?
Hot Streak Jet Truck, After Shock Jets Truck, Beast from the East Jet Dragster, Wicked
all custom made. All billet aluminum frames and titanium bolts to keep the weight down. These sleds can range from 125 k to 175 k per sled. Countless hours of labor and time practicing every week to perform like this.
and they just fly. Also, you had all day sports men racing. super pro, street, top sportsmen, top dragster, jr. dragster, jr. street. This was a full day of racing.
Let’s look at what the family can expect when you come to this event. You will see things you most likely have never seen if you’re a first timer. You will see flames pouring out the back of a fire truck and out of a huge 18-wheel truck like the ones you see on the highway. You will feel the heat coming from twenty-five yards away going across your face like a tropical heat wave. You will see a truck on its back two wheels drive down the ¼ mile in 11 seconds or faster. You will see cars that look like the cars you drive by every day you go to work that go faster than you could even imagine. You can go to the pits and talk to the owners and drivers about their cars and truck. You ask if you or your kids can they sit in the car or truck and take a picture? I will bet every one of them will say, ‘yes, please do.’ Walk around the pits, eat food, and do whatever you want. It is family and you get to see and feel that. This a family experience for everyone.

The action started at 11:00 am and did not stop until about 10:00 pm. People just having a fun time with family and friends. ET class racing was done during the day in several classes. There was a Quick Bike Shoot of six teen of the fastest bikes in the area that ran under eight second every round. There was a Pro Mod Sled class. Yes, you heard it right, a snowmobile that ran under 5 seconds in the 1/8 mile. These are heavily modified sleds,
They are also part of a class that is in Mich igan competing for championship points. Your local racers are at the top of the list with amazing et and mile per hour numbers. You could see 800 cc sleds doing the same thing. They are a little slower but, trust me, this is not an easy class to win in. This class has grown from 8 to 32 sleds for every event. Then you have a street fighter motorcycle class. Street fighter class, you might ask. They are street bikes that can be driven to the track, race, and drive them back home if they want to. These bikes can run in the low eight second time zone. The trailing arms are ex tended, and they still have a challenging time keeping the front end down. In this class, the bike has stock fairings and wheels on them,
Just look at the stands. They were filled, peo ple everywhere enjoying the show. Look at the pictures and look at everyone taking vid eos of the cars as they go down the track. You can see the flash on the cell phones as they make their very own video of the show. The kids with smiles from ear to ear, grownups experiencing for the first time the jet cars or pro mods going down the track. This a happy place where people come to enjoy the show. Motorcycles running in the seven second zone in ¼ of a mile. Snowmobiles on the track in July?
I want to let people to know that the drag racing community had a tragic accident in April. Chris Darnell was the driver and son to Neil Darnell in the Shockwave Jet Power
Truck. Chris was married to Brook and had two daughters. He had two brothers and one sister. A family-oriented person first, Chris had set a world record of 376 miles per hour. While doing a show racing against an F14 fighter jet down an airport runway, he had beaten the fighter jet when a tragic accident happened and took Chris away from us all. There was a memorial at the starting line for Chris and a moment of silence. The respect of 8,500 people all standing with their heads down in honor of Chris Darnell. He always put on a good show every pass he made. The jet car and drag racing community will never be the same. Our prayers and hearts go to the Darnell family. You will truly be missed Chris, very much.
Some racers go to New England Dragway about every weekend. This is a way of life for them. The whole family does this together and make memories. They make lifelong friends and just have a good time. They travel to other tracks to represent their home track, New England Dragway, against other tracks for Divisionals events to bring home a Walley trophy they are competing for, as it is your career goal as a racer. It is the most important trophy in drag racing, period. The Stanley Cup of drag racing if you will.
In closing, I hope you try to attend one of these events and experience it for yourself. The words and pictures do not do it justice. I promise you will not be disappointed. Get ready, because once you have seen it once you will keep coming back for more. New England Dragway makes this a place where all can have fun and enjoy it all the time. Wednesday night, or called street night, Friday night, where
street cars and drag cars can come and have fun or practice before the weekend events. Saturday and Sundays are for events.

LOST IN TIME
JIM WEICHERDING
It is appropriate to write an article like this at the start of the fall season. We are about to face changes regarding our antique and classic car and truck hobby, culture and lifestyle with the changing of the season. By the time you read this article, classic car and truck shows, along with cruise nights, will be a thing of the past for the year 2022 across the region and most of America. New England will be dealing with cooler temperatures, cloudy skies and shorter days. It comes with the territory.
It’s nothing new for any of us diehard automotive enthusiasts with a passion for antique and classic vehicles. I personally prefer muscle cars and badass trucks myself. What is new to all of us, is the automotive atmosphere and attitudes towards our hobby and lifestyle related to classic car and truck shows. The beginning of the season brought about higher gas prices and oil prices right out of a horror movie for most of us.
Funny how the gas prices are trending downward at the end of our
What’s On Your Shelf?
automotive hobby season when many of us start putting our classics in storage for the long fall and winter months. Many things have changed dramatically since the end of 2019. We have endured a virus that put our hobby and lifestyle in neutral for more than two years. We still aren’t beyond that virus’ reach in our third year. It’s still lurking behind every corner. High gas prices, outrageous food costs, utilities hikes and extreme oil prices that will leave millions of families struggling and in the cold until spring of next year.
What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-VernancioThe most challenging task that we are tr ying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assor ted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessar y clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.
Classic vehicles are for sale everywhere and the only reason why: because their owners need the money and have lost interest in the automotive hobby, culture and lifestyle. It’s about survival now. What worries me the most is where these classics will eventually end up. Sitting in a backyard rotting away? In a scrap yard somewhere along the tree line behind all of the other vehicles? Or worst scenario yet: crushed for scrap? How many classic ride yard ornaments and future weed containers will come of this down the road? When do valuable antique and classic vehicles once sought after by automotive enthusiasts willing to pay top dollar for them become worthless and rusted heaps nobody wants or can even drive anymore? Do we only get to see these vehicles on display inside automotive museums in about ten years from now?
When perusing through your stash of goods on top of your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful har m to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.
EV infrastructures are already funded by the federal government in many states with more states ready to implement the same EV infrastructures in their own states. Rhode Island is dead last on the list of states wanting to bring EV infrastructures into our lives. California, on the other hand, is pushing hard to ban all ICE, (Internal Combustion Engines), vehicles from their state in the near future. Readers following the popular OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series every month in Motorhead Magazine are well aware of the OUTLAW RUN paperback book and the ongoing monthly magazine series. The fictional premise was published in a book a decade earlier in March of 2012. 2022 we are all facing the reality of that story. It’s here and happening right now. It’s happening for all of us.
A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in tur n rust out your brake lines and all necessar y hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Par ts retailer
One other thing that most Motorheads will store in case of emergencies is fuel. Yes, it may be necessar y to keep a gallon or two for that snow blower over these
Millions of automotive enthusiasts and classic vehicle owners nationwide are watching what happens next and time waits for nobody. Carpoctalyptic horror stories like OUTLAW RUN are remnants of Mad Max and fall in line with movies such as Vanishing Point, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, Smokey and the Bandit, Gone in 60 Seconds and Bullitt just to name a few. All incredibly successful at the drive-in’s and movie cinema box offices at the time of their releases. Will our antique and classic vehicle hobby, culture and lifestyle be lost in time sooner, rather than later?
Are we witnessing an automotive transformation that will eliminate gas fueled vehicles altogether? Science fiction movies depict vehicles that hover above the ground and even fly above our heads in the future. Demolition Man movie shows people living underground eating scraps and rat burgers and hiding a classic Oldsmobile 442 inside an elevator shaft in perfect condition while vehicles above ground are voice activated and operated primarily by a computer system.
The future is right now. One thing is for certain: what we take for granted today will one day be lost in time.
Occasionally,
drag racing events with
show vehicles and display, or even drag race themselves, at nostalgia drag racing events during the NHRA Drag Racing Season. Favorite locations were Lebanon Valley Dragway located in New York and New England Dragway located in New Hampshire. That’s all gone now. Everything is going away related to classic cars and trucks along with racing and drag racing events. No more classic car and truck shows, cruise nights or even just taking
or
antique hot rod for a cruise through the rural country roads. It’s illegal. It’s against the law. If you get caught driving any of these vehicles on America’s streets, roads and highways it means jail time, losing your drivers license, hefty nes, extreme court costs and loss of your ride to the nearest car crusher salvage yard. 120,000,000 automotive enthusiasts nationwide do not have the right to drive their classics anymore. Environmental agencies blame these vehicles for decades of climate change but never really looked into how well
most of these vehicles are regularly maintained and only driven on a part time basis by their owners. They aren’t beaters or broken down barely running gas guzzlers driven as daily drivers. They run great and have very little emissions problems whatsoever. That didn’t stop the government from banning them anyway. Outlaw was built to drive. Not built to be parked.
