Oxford Motorcars Following Their Passion By RB What started as a side job for extra money in high school ended up becoming fuel for following a passion. Jake Moreau and his crew are ambitious young men over at Oxford Motorcars. Proving that not only do the younger generation admire and appreciate the classics, but they have set about making sure that they are the go-to experts in the location and restoration of some rare beauties, specializing in the British and European varieties. Consider their most recent additions to inventory, cars like a 1953 MG TD, or the newly acquired 1968 Lotus Super 7 if that’s more your taste. And

they don’t only focus on the exotics, did I mention there is a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air on the ‘just added to inventory’ list.

CLASSIC MUSCLE CAR MANIA WRITTEN BY “ETCH” When you think of Classic Muscle Cars more often than not, the four basic food for horsepower groups leads us back to the four manufacturers noted in history as rival clans battling it out for more horsepower and more automobile buyers of

in any realm of thinking. Correct that. I am a big Pontiac and Chevrolet fan, but that won’t take away anything from the Mopar and Ford fans with this content about classic muscle cars. Most of us reading this article were just kids and young teens when

action-packed movies made back in this era that featured badass muscle cars and famous actors that drove them across the big screen at the movie theatres and drive in movies that fascinated us into a muscle car mania that lasts most of us a lifetime? What is that simple, or were there other factors involved like environment and upbringing as kids and teens by adults and family members in our lives that also added this culture to our world? Personally, I think it was many factors that lead to my love of classic muscle cars, classic cars and trucks in general growing up in that timeline.

My dad owned classic cars that back then were not classic at all, they were newly manufactured vehicles. Accept his “55 Chevy and “57 Chevy. They aren’t categorized as muscle cars but they did pack a punch with some engine and drive train modifications. They aren’t muscle cars

but they are cool classic cars and these were the types of vehicles that he drove when I was just a little kid in the late 60’s. I remember them. I grew to love them and admire what they were made of; steel, rubber, cloth, chrome and power! I knew a lot of kids growing up that didn’t have a dad who owned and drove a cool car. More of those than who’s father did drive one. Today, these guys could care less about muscle cars and classic cars. Don’t even bat an eye when one drives by us on the road, or highway. Me? I break my neck twisting and turning my head to watch it as it drives by then wrench my neck trying to

catch a final glimpse of the classic cruisin’ away in the rearview and side view mirrors. In high school, my newly developed friendships and discussions began to be more about fast cars and big trucks rather than anything else. We all loved them, and we all drove them. Most of the high school parking lot was filled to capacity with the family vehicle in parking spots close to the school entrances and exits. The few of us with muscle cars parked waaaaay in the back of the

parking lot and hiked our butts through all of the family vehicles to get to our rides safely ticked away in the far corner of the school lot. When I say few of us, I mean just a few of us. I drove to work after school every single day just so I could own my muscle cars and so did my closest friends. We had automotive related jobs after school working in area garages, auto dealerships and automotive parts stores. We loved everything cars and trucks. We had muscle cars. I remember walking into a parts store one sunny Saturday afternoon looking for some chrome additions and bolt-on parts for my 1969 GTO with my buddy David who was searching for the same to put into his 1968 Chevelle. The owner, Paul Barber, who is no longer with us, saw us walking down the main aisle and said, “Here comes a pair that beats a full house” and asked us what we needed for the two side-by-side power plant cars taking up half his entrance door area. I remember this like it was yesterday. I think it is a lot to do with environment and also think it is a lot to do with our own personalities as adults that keeps this fascination with classic muscle cars alive today. It might be considered to most as unusual and they have dubbed it throughout the decades as a “Mania”, but it goes much deeper than that. We aren’t born loving one thing, or loving another thing. It is acquired throughout our lives. We are either nurtured to be one way, and maybe another way, depending on who raised you and who was a part of your family upbringing. If you are reading this article, chances are very good that you too, were brought up in a family that loved fast cars, classic cars, racing, badass trucks and of course, Muscle Cars. It isn’t a way of life for most of us. It is our life and we love every minute of it! So, the next time you happen to see a cool muscle car approaching you from the opposite direction on the roadways and highways and you stretch your neck just to watch it cruise on by it isn’t just Muscle Car Mania for the sake of using the word mania. It is more a passion and recollection of your childhood and family upbringing that makes you feel the way that you do when you see these beautiful time pieces on our streets, roads and highways during the cruisin’ season. Whether it is a Pontiac, Chevrolet, Mopar or a Ford Muscle Car that catches your attention the most and you happen to be a fan of that particular make and manufacturer, chances are very strong that your likes and dislikes for any of these vehicles was nurtured and influenced by your dad, or another car enthusiast family member growing up. Even a close friend one day pulled into your driveway with his own muscle car and you became hooked and you are now a part of this lifelong Muscle Car Mania we enjoy so much.

As I pull into Roger’s Automotive, the owner Al Gil greets me with warm smile and a friendly wave. We share a laugh at this as he goes on to recount that shortly thereafter the car was garaged for nearly 20 years. During that time, in the early 60’s, young Al then a burgeoning teenager and aspiring mechanic, decided to take matters into his own hands. He began taking the car apart digging into the project with visions of what would be. Alas, as so often happens given the fickleness of youth, Al lost interest in the project and seldom visited

the garage afterwards. Luckily, his father, inspired by the work his son had started, soon picked up where his progeny had left off. Al tells me that his dad stripped the car down to the bare chassis and painstakingly rebuilt this beautiful icon from a by-gone era from the ground up. Such an incredible restoration had he done, Al’s father was invited to join more than one Model A car club and soon began to travel with his wife on weekends to various car shows in the area. During that time, Al Sr. was the recipient of numerous “Best in Class” awards and showing the car was a hobby that he enjoyed for many years. After Al’s father passed in the early 90’s, the magnificent Model A was once again left to languish - this time in his mother’s garage, for the better part of 10 years. Eventually, Al’s mother bequeathed the car to Al who only had a small amount of work to do to make it road-worthy once again. Al tells me that driving the marvelous old Model A has been one of his great joys ever since. He asks me what could be more enjoyable than rumbling along backroads on balmy summer weekend drives with his grandkids (and his great-grand kids) in tow...? “But never to school?” I ask.

TASCA MUSTANG SHOWDOWN NEW ENGLAND DRAGWAY CELEBRATES THE GODFATHER OF MUSTANG PERFORMANCE BOB TASCA SR.

ED YESSAIAN In the early morning hours of Saturday August 15th, I spotted a brand new Mustang GT 5.0 on display, in the new for 2015 color called Guard Metallic (a unique head turning shade of green). As I admired the car, I was briefly stunned as a familiar figure emerged from the driver’s seat, Mr. Carl Tasca Senior, who was showing off the car during his 2015 TASCA Performance Ford Fest. This event was scheduled to be a tribute to his father, the late Bob Tasca Senior, who is single-handedly responsible for a huge percentage of both drag racing and Ford Performance history. As Carl Senior circled the new Mustang GT, he proudly raved about the incredible value that Ford has provided the consumer who purchases a 2015 Mustang. The power, performance, and handling, according to Carl Senior, “... is equal to or in some cases BETTER, than cars costing more than double what a new Mustang GT goes out the door for”. If the factory stock performance isn’t enough to blow you away, Carl Senior explained, “…this particular car has a few goodies from the TASCA MOD SHOP including exhaust upgrades, cold-air intake kit, and a TASCA specific recalibration”. He went on to explain how currently “magazine articles are raving about the new Mustang, in all trim levels and engine combinations, and that is just in stock form. With a few tweaks from the TASCA Mod Shop, this car becomes not only an exception value but a phenomenal performer”. With that I had to throw in an inquiry about his own personal ride- the TASCA Cobra Jet. Of course it was on hand, and it was locked and loaded, ready to fire off more 7 second elapsed times that day. In addition to the Cobra Jet he also had another celebrity on hand, his nephew Bob Tasca 3, the NHRA Pro driver, who spent a good portion of his day signing autographs and starring in photos with fans. It was really admirable to see the TASCA family sharing their time, their cars, and their enthusiasm with the racing

STREET OUTLAW If I could pick one man, in the history of drag racing with the worst luck I have ever seen, it would be Jesse Cammarata and his 1989 Turbo Mustang. But today was his day, with a new personal best of 8.70 @ 168mph, Cammarata would take the victory after a false start by Peter Guest

Brooks won three of the four awards including Best Average ET, Quickest ET, and Fastest MHP overall. It just goes to show you that the prettiest girl at the dance doesn’t always make Prom Queen.

HOLD THE WATER!: ANTIFREEZE BASICS The Dos and Don’ts of Coolant Blends

By Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio It’s a definitive fact that summer is almost over, and a major concern to acknowledge is the winterization of our vehicles. Most of us Motorheads are changing our oil to a bit of a thinner blend, throwing stabilizers into our gasoline or anti-gel treatment into diesels. Out of this changeover process, it is most important to focus on the liquid

you are putting in the correct coolant to keep your vehicle “happy”. The first question most asked in a general parts store when picking up antifreeze is “What kind is right for my vehicle?” Well this varies on many certain factors within manufacturer specifics as far as production and maintenance. For instance, vehicles produced in America carry antifreeze

that keeps our vehicles running strong the most during the winter. DEX-COOL, G12 and Pentofrost are plenty of common names that you might be hearing this winter and it is vital to make sure that

that has been traditionally made with silicates and phosphates and are used as corrosion inhibitors. European vehicles have completely “86-ed” phosphates awhile the Japanese have specifically rid of the silicates. The newer corrosion inhibitor technology now includes Organic Acid Technology (OAT) and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT). These combi1900 Mineral Spring nations are currently Avenue your “extended life” North Providence, RI antifreeze and have a 5 year of 150,000 life Phone: span whereas basic IAT antifreeze is for two years or 30,000 miles.

currently in your radiator now, as color can be a great indicator as well. Most manufacturers will dye their antifreeze to make it easier for their clientele to visually inspect which coolant they may need. A common concern with adding fluid to your cooling system is making the mistake of mixing blends. Is this ultimately a bad decision? Abso-

lutely! You should never mix OAT with IAT blends as it will turn your coolant into sludge due to chemical reaction. This may cause internal clogs within your radiator, thermostat, or water pump and cause premature wear as possible overheat-

To determine which antifreeze is right for you, you need to distinguish what is actually in your car parts wise. Is your car older with a copper or brass radiator? If yes, then you must use the basic IAT antifreeze as the OAT does not have the corrosion inhibitors that will protect your copper/brass components as it was made for more modern aluminum products. Secondly, you may want to check your vehicle’s manual or call your local dealership to make sure you are purchasing the right fluid. You can also check to see what is

ing and head or engine damage in the end. It may also cause your cooling system to withhold proper operating engine temperatures. There are antifreezes that claim to be “universal”, however it is best to be on the safe side as OAT based formulas are still developing and you should always stick to what the manufacturer recommends just to be on the safe side. What should you do if you accidentally mix formulas? The answer would be to immediately drain and flush your cooling system. The longer the two formulas sit in your system, the potential for damage to your engine may increase. Once your engine is flushed, use the specified fluid that your manufacturer designates as this will work best for your vehicle. Also remember to determine if you must add any water to your antifreeze as most cars require a 50 to 50 ratio of coolant to H20. Maintaining a healthy flow of fluids in your engine will keep your vehicle safe from freezing or overheating this winter and genuinely help lengthen the lifespan of your ride.

TOURQE MANAGEMENT DAVE McCLAIN This month I’m going to talk about the benefits and potential pitfalls of eliminating Torque

Management in your late model GM tune. In most modern GM PCM’s are equipped with the ability to reduce the available torque produced by the engine during shifting of transmission

gears. The main reason Torque Management is programmed into the computer is to save driveline components from potential damage during shifts.

mum torque that will be sent to the transmission will be reduce to 346 ftlbs. Most tuners usually zero this table out thinking the car will be faster without the reduction, which if the car has proper driveline upgrades and sticky tires could be true. I doubt it is worth more than a tenth of a second or two in a quarter mile drag race. The main benefit to keeping some Torque Management on is to preserve driveline components. Basically, reduced transmission failure/wear, drive shaft failure, broken rear ends, and most typically twisted and broken drive axles. The most common failure is the stock drive axles. They seem to brake pretty easy. Manual transmission cars seem to fail due to wheel hop during hard launches, especially when using sticky drag radials/ slicks. The factory components were never really designed for repeated drag race use. When I am tuning a customer’s car, I discuss the potential issues outlined above and have them make the decision on how much reduction they want. Most customers are unaware of the

Your typical stock 2010+ Camaro SS LS3 motor is capable of producing 426 HP and 420 ftlbs. The factory tune is set to reduce about 100 newton meters of torque or 74 ftlbs. So the maxi-

potential expensive component failures that can occur. Some are aware and are planning on upgrading driveline components. The two most important upgrades are high performance axles and a one piece drive shaft. The factory driveshaft is a two piece design on the most of the newer rear wheel drive GM cars. The Pontiac GTO (2004-2006) Pontiac G8, Camaro SS 2010+, and Cadillac CTS-V all have a

two piece driveshaft that could potentially break. The Camaro ZL1 driveline is built stronger due to the supercharged high output engine. These aftermarket components are extremely expense too. A set of aftermarket hi performance rear drive axles starts at $1200. You could pretty

easily spend over $4000, upgrading your drive line components. I strongly encourage my customers to leave some if not all Torque Management on until they get the necessary upgrades

driveline components yet, but the car sees limited dragstrip use and occasional spirited driving. The current set up produces 575RWHP and 518RWTQ, which is way over what the factory

to handle the additional torque from their modifications. It really makes sense for the average bolt on car at moderate power levels. Automatic Transmission cars tend to be a lot easier on driveline components due to the torque converter soaking up some of the hit between shifts. In my personal 2010 Supercharged 2010 Camaro SS, which is an automatic I have a 37 ftlbs reduction in torque programmed in to my computer. My car has about 56,000 miles on it and I haven’t broken any

The Red Dragon Phil Wagner’s 1978 Plymouth Duster ED YESSAIAN Every now and then, as I wander around making appearances for MOTORHEAD, I get a comment or two, insisting that I really need to show the MOPAR crowd more love. The irony of that particular statement is that one of my first assignments EVER was at Bald Hill Dodge, in Warwick, RI, where the dealership prepped two brand new SRT-8 cars

with the magazine and I have occasionally thrown in a few other Mopars. But as many of you know, I occasionally have to be reminded by owner Lou Cicerone to “find something to write about besides Mustangs”. And so I headed off to New

England Dragway to find something cool, out of the ordinary, and FAST!!! It is often said that what you are looking for is sometimes right before your eyes, which it

for me to test for the day. Imagine my absolute joy as I was handed the keys to both an SRT-8 Charger and an SRT-8 Challenger, to unleash on the highways and backroads of Rhode Island (strictly for educational purposes). After that dream assignment nearly 5+ years have passed

was, because I just happen to see Phil Wagner’s wheelie popping, nitrous drinking, ass-kicking 1978 Plymouth Duster at the track all the time. What better feature car to appeal to the MOPAR crowd than the RED DRAGON!! However, Phil’s Duster wasn’t always the fire breathing terror that

it is today. He’s actually owned the car for over 20 years and said that it took three parts cars to finally build this one wild ride. His first trip down the quarter mile yielded him a 14.01 elapsed time. Less than one year later he improved on that and ripped off a 12.9. That same year, with a little

Nitrous, he picked up a full second improvement, trapping at 11.9. Eventually, that particular set-up ran its course and the Duster went in for a heart transplant. The original 360 engine served Phil well for a few years, but in its place came a 340 that was worked over to a final tally of 416ci then topped with Indy heads. A 727 Transmission backs up the new power plant with a full manual valve body and a 5500 Ultimate converter. Putting the power to the pavement is an 8.75 rear end with 35 spline axles and 3.91 gears. With the new drivetrain and upgraded headers, the car showed an immediate response with a 10.90 pass at the track. Eventually Phil would work his way towards his current best of 10.84 @ 124 on motor alone and 9.59 @ 139 on Nitrous. This is truly an amazing accomplishment on stock suspension and a 275 drag radial. The thing that impressed me the most about Phil’s car was the fact that it is TRULY a street car. He drives it every weekend and has no problem rolling into car shows and cruise nights with it. Phil also said that he does all his own work, including maintenance, tuning, and cleaning. In the couple years I’ve seen him running, I can honestly say, it’s one of my favorite Mopars. Because who wouldn’t want their very own fire breathing DRAGON?

A Man and His M AVERY BROCCOLI A few weeks ago, Mike, a good friend of mine, was surprised to see his wife and one-year-old son strolling through the door of my father’s shop with iced coffees in hand. Just finishing up a quick detailing on his 1998 BMW M3, he happy greeted them. He set

the baby down in the drivers seat and laughed as he tried to play with the shifter. “The little man knows a sweet car when he sees one,” joked Mike, as we all got ready to leave for the day. When Mike originally bought the car a few years ago, he took a big gamble. He had been searching for an older M3, especially one in

Hell-Rot Red, as BMW so modestly named it, and one just so happened to stroll into the shop after taking a hit. The owner wanted to dump the car, being under the impression that the engine block could have been cracked in the accident.

Mike took the chance, and was lucky to find that the engine was in perfect condition, and began his restoration of the body. After some paintwork, a few performance upgrades, and some new wheels, the car was ready to go. Mike often enjoys cruising up

to his hometown in New Hampshire with the car. He isn’t much of a speed demon, however, even though the car is built for it. His appreciation lies in the little things, like the sound of the engine, or how the car handles through the g-forces of an exit ramp.

once in a while on cars like his M3.

Most importantly, however, is the condition of the paint and interior. Mike has worked as a painter for almost ten years, starting his

Mike has also enjoyed restoring other BMW’s when he comes across them. Most notably, an E30 325i, also in red, which is now owned by his own father, who appreciated the car so much he had to have it when the restoration was done. Mike’s father is the source of his love for the old German cars. BMW, for Mike, is not just a symbol of solid

career before he could legally grab a beer. Over the years he has honed his skills on the many cars that come in and out of the shop, always striving for perfection, and showcasing his ability

engineering, but a blast from his past as well; a reminder of his childhood. Perhaps one day, Mike’s son will pop the hood on a Hell-Rot Red M3 and think fondly of his father as well.

The Lamborghini Veneno LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO It’s not often that one can be seduced by a vehicle so powerfully provocative with its alluring oneof-a-kind body style and engaging overall superb engine performance. This luxurious “supercar” entitled the “Veneno” or “Poison” in Spanish was

named consequently “Car Zero” was finished in a striking Gunmetal Grey with the Italian flag in vinyl accenting the vehicle’s body contours on both sides. The frame is actually carbon fiber monocoque with aluminum front and rear frames with a fixed roll-bar system. The front and rear have a horizontal mono-tube damper with push-rod

produced by Lamborghini in 2013 honoring a trademark of their 50th anniversary. This was a limited unit designed to be based solely on Lamborghini’s Aventador model which would ideally hold a price tag of about four million dollars. The Veneno is available as both a two door coupe (five current produced units) as well as a roadster edition (nine current produced units). They were originally conveniently assembled in the heart of Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy and rolled off the line with the remarkable 6.5 liter V12 engine (11.8:1 compression ratio) with electronically controlled variable valve timing that is bursting at the seams with a mere 750 braking horsepower and 508 foot pounds of torque which in the Roadster version can travel 0mph to 60mph in 2.9 seconds flat. This dynamic engine is mated to a seven speed semi-automatic transmission featuring all wheel drive (4WD with Haldex Generation IV) for the most presented grip and tire spin. Not only is this supercar a rarity in the horsepower department, but it also takes the cake on creativity for exterior design. The first prototype

system. The Roadster version sat upon exclusive alloy wheels mounted on Pirellis and was painted in Rosso Veneno (red) color and held two bucket seats made that were forged composite woven carbon-fiber “CarbonSkin” interior upholstery. This ride was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2013 as the prototype “0”, and the Roadster was first discovered on an Italian aircraft carrier called the “Cavour” which was docked in Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed port, followed by a

WINTER BLUES JACK WOODMANSEE

Almost everyone is looking for cures for the winter blues, that day that you stare out the window and mutter to yourself “I miss cool cars!” Maybe a trip to Florida would be the answer, if funds or time are available. I have a couple of other suggestions. A weekend trip to a New England Car Museum may work for you. I have found several open in the winter. I do suggest that you call ahead as many do have limited hours. In Maine The Owls Head Transportation Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to “…the preservation, conservation and demonstration of pioneer-era transportation. Our collection includes airplanes, ground vehicles, engines, and more, each piece tells a story about the history of transportation…” This museum is located 117 Museum Street, Owls Head, Maine 04854, Tel: (207) 5944418. http://owlshead.org. The next museum also in Maine is one that specializes in one particular make. The Stanley Museum, is located at 40 School Street, Kingfield, Maine 04947, Tel: (207) 265-2729. “The Museum commemorates and preserves the heritage of Stanley family genius. The famous ‘Stanley Steamer’ automobile was invented by Francis Edgar Stanley and manufactured by him and his twin brother, usually referred to as the Stanley twins, F.E. and F.O...” http://www.stanleymuseum.org.

date and line up some friends. On the appointed day go buy the coffee then proceed to the prearranged empty parking lot, set the coffee down. Now the important step, return to car and do “donuts” around the cup. The object of the exercise is to see how much rubber will be attached to the cup without knocking the cup over, (See photos). Whatever you choose, have fun and as Sox fans say “Wait till next year.”

Pininfarina itself assumed the car’s marketing from 1983 to the end of its production in 1985 – as the Pininfarina Spider Azzura. • The body of the car was designed and marketed by Pininfarina. The convertible body was designed by Tom Tjaarda, who used his earlier designs of Chevrolet Corvette “Rondine” and Ferrari 275 GTS. Several years later, in 1981, on the 50th anniversary of Pininfarina, this fact was further emphasized by producing a Fiat Spider 2000 Pininfarina 50th (Golden) Anniversary Edition. In 1972, a sports version of the Spider was revealed. This was required for a type-approval of its rally version, which earned some remarkable success. The models sold in showrooms were marked as 124 CSA (C-Spider-Abarth). The vehicle had a capacity of 128 hp. By John Sahagian In the spring of 1972, I saw my first Triumph TR6. It was not quite as “WOW” as this one is now but it was indeed the same one. It was TR6 brown but still looked really cool to me. My Dad and the whole family went into The Auto Show in Seekonk on that day in April and yes, they had a couple other Triumphs; the Spitfire and the GT6. I was only 9 at the time but knew enough that when I found out they were both 4 cylinders, my vote was in on the TR6. That was it, the car has been “in the family” since 1972. Well sort of – I’ll get to that in a bit. We did things in that car like go to the movies with five people, yes five-two in the passenger’s seat, two on the bench in the back (with the top up 28| Motorhead Magazine - September 2015

for more room back there) and the driver. I have lots of fond memories, like being the only kid on the block, besides my brother, to learn to drive a stick with a pedal that pops. Boy was I surprised a few years later when I drove my Mom’s standard Subaru sponge clutch, ick. Yes, I’ve popped it a couple of times since, but a lot less lately, she is getting old. This car has gone through some stuff like lots of older cars. It has been renovated three times, two of which were frame off jobs. The first time around, in 1980 into 1981 was not a frame off job, yet the car was gone through mechanically and the compression ratio was increased by John Conti at Conti’s Service. The body and paint was done by Will at Cranston Auto Body. He finished up

right around the beginning of that summer, which gave me about a month or so before my father would come up from Florida to drive it back with me. That was a good month with plenty of friends (most turning out to be girlfriends) wanting the ride to the beach. The second renovation is when we get into the “well sort of”. In the early 1990s she was sold out of Dad’s driveway in Florida to some guy that used to go to the intra-coastal by his house in Pompano Beach and saw it in the driveway with a flat tire or two, in need of a clutch and lots of other attention. The years had not been good to her. He bought it for song and put about $25,000 into a very nice restoration in BR Green, electric overdrive, the custom piped exhaust, and a beautiful, none origi-

nal (they should have had an option) wood steering wheel. Fortunately for me, this guy ran out of money about three years later and came knocking on my father’s door to see if he might be interested in buying the car back. My father played coy and said, “not really but it looks great, and well maybe but “wha-duh-ya-thinkin?” And of course the deal was done. So again, I got to drive the car when I visited Dad in Florida – boring driving for a car like this – NOT made for those roads at all! Anyway, Dad lets the car go again. A few years later, it sits not 50 feet from the intra-costal not being driven and me and my, then fiancé are visiting, and I say “Gee Dad, I would fix it up again, take really good care of it and keep it in the family.”

Don’t you know the “keep it in the family” thing worked. He shipped it up to Conti’s Service the day he returned to Florida from our Wedding. John Conti had one question-Are you going to keep the car, like keep the car in the family? Or do you just want to drive it for a while? When I started this, I thought I would want to make it nice, something I could drive and have fun in. Considering I didn’t have any kids yet and had a flexible job and was doing well, the end result led to a “eat off the valve cover” type vehicle. Frame off, 6 years of restoration ensued; the chrome went to Philadelphia, I went to Vermont to see Mike Buonanduci for as much “original new stock” I could talk him into parting with and John started from the ground up by re-welding the frame because the Brits in those days made it look good, but longevity was not the objective.

Red. But after the time and treasure in this car, TR6 Red was just not going to cut it. The wise thing to do was to have my wife, Grace, pick it anyway and she just said flat out, “That is boring, I’d go with the Hot Tamale Red”. So it’s back on the road for nearly 10 years now and “lives”, as my father says, better than lots of people do through the winter, warm and cozy. It hasn’t seen more than a dozen drops of rain and thanks to all the Conti’s and Dennis Rossi, there is still not a rattle to it and things look good for my son, Austin, to be next in line to learn to drive a stick in a car with a pedal that “pops”.

One of the more notable non-original features is clearly the paint job. Other areas, like the custom exhaust and billet one off hangers that John Conti custom fabricated, or the wood steering wheel from the second restoration stand out as well, but this paint job just gets the attention every time. Though it was a bit more time and treasure than I had imagined possible, Dennis Rossi did an absolutely fabulous job with body and paint. We settled with the “fit” of door number three on the passenger’s side. I guess the Brits hadn’t learned Henry Ford’s lesson on the integrated part system, as yet. The paint is DuPont Hot Colors, Hot Tamale

READERS RIDES ROBERT SOURCY’S 1964 CHEVY CHEVELLE

Written by ETCH

It takes blood, sweat, tears, time and money.

What do you think of when you see a classic car or truck cruising down the roadways of New England?

This 1964 Chevelle is a perfect example of what can be your reward after all of that blood, sweat, tears, time and money can get you in the end.

Do you just look at it and admire the shiny paint job and listen to the exhaust system kick out a loud, or mild rumble as it passes you by and think that it must be cool to own one these classics?

A gorgeous piece of machinery that looks like it just rolled off of the Chevrolet assembly line in Detroit, Michigan back in late 1963, or early 1964.

Do you know what goes into making these beautiful reflections of days gone past into these admired vehicles? Well, Robert Soucy of Massachusetts knows what it takes to get his 1964 Chevy Chevelle to be a must see classic muscle car, and so does anyone who builds them, restores them and owns them.

Robert knows one thing for sure. This is his classic car and he loves to go cruising in it whenever the time allows him to do so. Personally, I love the paint color of this classic Chevy and it happens to be one of my favorite automobile colors other than black. This Chevelle wouldn’t look good all black, but it looks great all maroon. Even the interior and engine reflects the same color scheme throughout, but I think with this READERS RIDES classic Chevy it works well. These boxy Chevy Chevelles were all the rage back in the early and mid sixties before they changed the body shape and style back in 1968, when their appearance was drastically modified for aerodynamics to help increase gas mileage and give them a sleeker look. I do really like these classic boxy vehicles and this 1964 Chevy Chevelle is one to really appreciate. The complete restoration put this Chevy back to its original condition as it features a stock rebuilt engine, refurbished interior and restored body

The moon is blocked and cloud covered with the light going in and out while he looks around to evaluate his next move. Etch turns on his car radio and hears disturbing news about his situation. Etch is wanted for multiple felonies and the police are asking the public to help them find the wanted OUTLAW.

The OUTLAW GTO crawls towards the three young women as Etch tells the one woman reaching down into her pocket book that she does not need to call anyone to come and save them. He is not there to harm anyone. He just needs to rest for awhile from driving so long. The young woman drops her pocket book and whispers to her two friends standing beside her. “Who do you think this guy is?” asks the young woman. “Don’t know, but his car is cool.” replied her friend. “Why are you driving your car back here?” she asks Etch. “Because I don’t like to leave it unattended,” replies Etch.

36| Motorhead Magazine - September 2015

The public is also warned to stay away, to just call the police because he may be armed and dangerous. Etch drives OUTLAW to the other side of the pond and turns off the engine. He watches as the three young women resume to catching some sun rays by laying back down on their beach towels. Etch puts his head back onto his driver seat and closes his eyes. Hours pass by and Etch wakes up to nothing but darkness and the sound of crickets and bullfrogs surrounding his classic muscle car.

“Armed and dangerous? Really” Etch smirks and climbs back into his GTO, turns the ignition key and then the lights. “I will show them armed and dangerous!” Etch is beyond upset by what he just heard on the radio. The GTO slowly makes it way down the dirt pathway until it hits blacktop pavement.

To be continued...

“What the hell?” Etch exits his GTO and stretches his stiff legs and arms.

Pops’ ‘82 Chevy Corvette SHAWN ALMEIDA and JENNE FEENEY Nestled in the heart of West Warwick on Main St. just off of route 117 at Johnson’s Auto Service you might find Dennis (better known as “Pops”) and his classic 1982 Chevrolet Corvette (C3) Collector’s Edition. Pops purchased this awesome vehicle back in 2001 in pretty decent condition. Its original small-block V8 L83 200hp engine with 350 cu in (5.7 liter) and 285 ft-lb of

torque is impressive. The only conversion was a carburetor in place of the cross-fire fuel injection system. Admittedly, he purchased a motorcycle the same year which took up most of his attention, and he allowed the car to sit for a while and the color faded. Eventually he turned his attention back to the Corvette saying “I figured if I was going to keep it I might as well bring it up to standard you know?” So he started restoring the car himself, beginning cosmetically as he applied a fresh coat of that unique two-tone paint with decals, new seat padding, covers, new rugs and the works which had it looking new. Needless to say, Pops was proud of his work. In fact, a year ago this month, Pops took the newly restored classic car on a cross county road trip to see the sights and show her off. They had a blast driving through Iowa, Colorado, California, seeing the Grand Canyon, and even Roswell, New Mexico “down where the spacemen are.” Everywhere they went, friendly onlookers stopped them for pictures and a chat. Pops can’t imagine there are too many of his beauty left, and neither can we. The 1982 Chevrolet (C3) Collector’s Edition was the first Corvette to sell for more than $20,000 with an original base price in 1982 of $22,537.59. There were only 6,759 of the silver-beige color (exclusive to the collector’s edition) ever produced out of 25,407 Corvette’s made that year. It was also the first Corvette to introduce the rear hatchback window design, a prelude to the Corvette C4 series. The whole story is made even more impressive knowing that most of Pop’s mechanical experience comes from the time he spent as a golf course mechanic, working on small engines and mowers for a living. Pops certainly has moved up from there. He has been spending the last 3 years working odd jobs here and there for Johnson’s Auto Service as he puts “just to keep myself busy.” Busy as he was, his hard work had paid off, for in the end it was well worth his time and effort as that old-school muscle car gem surely is one nice ride.

MID SEASON STATS AND DIVISION LEADERS IN NE DRAGWAY’S OUTLAW 10.50 ED YESSAIAN There are a couple things about New England Dragway’s Outlaw 10.50 series that really got me hooked about five years ago when I started covering the events for Motorhead Magazine. The first was the fact that it is run on a Pro Tree, which really fine tunes a drag racer’s skills off the starting line and requires a keen eye and sharp set of reflexes. In most instances, the race is won from a good holeshot off the starting line. The other thing that I really enjoy about the series is that it is one of the few “Heads Up” classes that still exist. Two racers leave side by side and the car that crosses the line first will get the win light. For 2014 we had a few new faces in the winner’s circle and a couple new faces on the podium receiving Championships in each index. As we cross the mid-point of the 2015 season, here are some highlights from the 5th of ten races, and also where we stand in overall points… True Street: 12.50 index- 2014 Street Eliminator Champion Kyle Burns faced off against the classic Ranchero of Greg Bagnell Senior. Although Papa Bagnell did not emerge victorious in this battle, he secured #1 qualifier with a perfect 12.50 E.T. and took the overall lead for the True Street division. Real Street: 11.50 index- The 11.50 index has grown significantly this season, and will hopefully continue to bring in a growing car count. In week five we saw one of my favorite Mustangs belonging to Rich St. Martin, face off against Stephen Pinter’s immaculate 1978 Firebird and it would be Pinter in the winner’s circle. Mid-season we have Steve George still topping the points list but the Championship is still up for grabs. Fast Street: 10.50 index- Despite being plagued with more bad luck than anyone could even imagine, Ron “The Machine” Childs continued to plug away this season, even borrowing a buddy’s Monte Carlo for a couple races, to make sure he didn’t fall out of his rhythm. Childs would take on a deadly accurate Chris Rice in the 5th race and take a very hard fought victory after Rice’s breakout pass. Childs took the overall lead for this season and now seems to be walking away with the 10.50 Championship. Super Street: 9.50 index- The founding father of Viking Motorsports, Scott Erickson, would fly uncontested in this index, closing in on current points leader Dave Rossini for the 9.50 Championship. The 2015 season is still up for grabs in this division. Wild Street: 8.50 index- After missing the first week of racing, “The Wild One” Jim Dayotas has been virtually unstoppable. Jim has been either the winner or runner up every single week this season and has had a handful of #1 qualifier runs. For week five Dayotas and Veteran Bill Sanford faced off but it would be Sanford with the win this time. Dayotas currently leads the Wild Street division, with Sanford close behind. 38| Motorhead Magazine - September 2015

ARCTIC CRUISE NIGHT RI STREET RODDING ASSOCIATION OUT IN FULL FORCE ON THIS COOL NIGHT

JACK WOODMANSEE

On the fourth Wednesday of July every year, at 5:30 pm, the center of beautiful downtown Arctic is closed to all traffic except car show participants to start the Arctic Cruise Night. A standout feature as one was driving through town was a large banner announcing the cruise and attached to the building housing The Arctic Playhouse. The banner was donated and hung by the playhouse. This year everything went according to plan. No rain, just a warm and beautiful summer night. The West Warwick Parks Department and Centreville Bank hold the Gazebo Concert Series for the benefit of the local community. This particular concert night also includes a car show directed by Rhode Island Street Rodding Association. When the street is closed by the West Warwick Police department it starts an avalanche of cars in motion to “angle” park. This allows for more cars in the area and better views of the vehicles present. Approximately two hundred fifty vehicles attended this year’s event and as you probably already guessed downtown Arctic quickly filled and was ablaze with brilliant colors.

Acting Director of Public Works and RISRA’s president spoke of the series. Then there was a litany of trivia questions with door prizes to the first participant that answer that question correctly. Did you know that the “H” in Shelby GT 350-H stood for Hertz? This writer did, and earned a door prize. The oldest person in the crowd won a prize of a bucket & sponge with orders to wash all the cars! Good luck with that!!!

with their opinions. The entertainment started at 6 pm and continued to 8:00 pm. The group played modern “Country & Western” and “Rock & Roll” from the 50’s thru the 80’s, a great choice for the crowd on hand. During intermission Dave Lombari, West Warwick

RISRA members manned the free vittles station. The highlight here was hot freshly made doughboys. Also complimentary were chips, peanut butter crackers, pizza, kettle popcorn and lemonade all under one tent. A welcomed sight was the ice cream bars that were distributed throughout the crowd for dessert. NAPA offered, on the house, water and an array of soft drinks. I would note that there were more than two dozen firms and individuals that contributed to making this evening a great success. There were information booths on the streets including one for the West Warrick Police Memorial and Anchor. Anchor is an organization that helps the recovery community with all stages of recovery focusing on a peer to peer support service. The next Arctic Cruise night is tentatively scheduled for July 27, 2016. Mark your calendar for what is a perfect evening of relaxation and cool cars.

JIM WEICHERDING On June 6th, 1933, the very first outdoor movie was shown in Camden, New Jersey. Eager and excited movie goers parked their vehicles for the first ever drive in theater called Park-In Theaters. Park-In Theaters was the concept of New Jersey resident, Richard Hollingshead. He was a movie buff and sales manager for his father’s business, Whiz Auto Product, located in Camden, New Jersey. Richard was inspired by his mom’s discomfort to stay seated in traditional movie theaters for long periods of time and thought that the comfort of our automobiles would be a great alternative to that cramped in seating arrangement that the big movie house offered its patrons on the weekends. Later, the name Park-In Theaters would be termed, “Drive-In Theaters” Hollingshead came up with the idea of an open-air theater where patrons could watch the movies in the comfort of their own vehicles. He also experimented in his driveway at his own home with different projectors and sound systems. He was noted for mounting the projector, a 1928 Kodak Projector, on the hood of his car after securing white sheets to the trees and placing a radio behind the makeshift screen for the sound. He also searched for ways to protect the projector and screen from rain and bad weather conditions. He also created a great way to space all of the vehicles in an arrangement that would allow all of the patrons to easily view the movie in comfort without stretching their necks to watch the movies. The young entrepreneur also applied and received a patent for his concept in May of 1933

USA, but eventually even those outdoor theaters began showing Hollywood blockbusters because the viewing audience wanted to see their favorite actors and actresses on larger screens in a more comfortable environment like their own vehicles. Drive-In Theaters were extremely popular during World War ll and became a huge entertainment venues during the 1950’s and 1960’s with at least 5,000 Drive-In Theaters open nationwide. With the new improved screen and sound technology movie goers could enjoy the feature films with their own window mounted speakers and eventually on their vehicle FM radios. and opened the very first Park-In Theaters, Inc. within a month of receiving that patent. His initial investment was $30,000 and advertised his venues as entertainment for the entire family. Hollingshead charged just twenty-five cents per car and twenty-five cents per person with nobody paying more than a dollar to watch the feature movie.

Drive-Ins became the icon of American culture and a typical weekend destination get-away for couples who wanted their privacy and not just for parents and kids. Teens were mostly using the Drive-Ins as a way to be alone regardless of what was showing on the big screen on any particular weekend.

The concept was well received and Hollingshead patent was overturned in 1949. After that, Drive-In Theaters started popping up all over the country. The largest one in the east coast was the All-Weather Drive-In located Copiague, New York. The drive-in was located on a 28-acre lot that had parking spaces for 2,500 cars and trucks, a kids playground and a full service restaurant. It was a perfect and inexpensive form of entertainment for couples who wanted time alone and families who wanted to enjoy a movie on the weekend. Drive-In Theaters showed mostly B-Movies that were not the Hollywood blockbusters shown on screens in big movie theater houses across the 42| Motorhead Magazine - September 2015

Since then, the Drive-In Movies have diminished because of rising real estate prices in community suburban areas, the increased availability of big screen surround-sound movie houses with more comfortable seating, better accommodations and video stores allowing families to view movies in the comfort of their own homes.

There are only approximately 500 Drive-In Theaters now showing movies across the USA that cater to kids, teens and families that want to get out of their homes on a nice summer evening and enjoy the movies on the big screen and fresh air on the weekend. So, bundle up the kids and head to your local Drive-in Theater and bring back those memories of the Lost Drive-In Theater with your family and friends if you can. There are still almost two months of Drive-In Theater family fun left in the season. Grab yourself some popcorn, hot dogs and cold drinks and enjoy the movie!

PUTNAM, CONNECTICUT

“Main Street Cruise”

JIM WEICHERDING

Normally, nobody in their right mind would wake up at four am just to go to a car show about ten miles away from their home, but I am not ever accused of being normal and this wasn’t just any run of the mill car show. This was the Putnam, Ct.

WINY located directly in the center of the town set up his audio speaker tent directly across the street where we were sitting and finding out that I was there from MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE asked me if I wanted to set up shop right next to his audio tent to pass out magazines and coloring books to the kids and families walking past that

nice people.

There were plenty of classic cars and trucks on display at the car show along with motorcycles and even some cool all terrain vehicles. The shiny paints jobs and chrome were a classic car and truck enthusiasts dream no matter what direction you went in within the town limits. Every shop and restaurant was open all day for all of the show vehicle owners and spectators that attended the car show event. Lines of people were waiting to be served at various retail food establishments and retails stores were hopping with activity. It was a great atmosphere and the town police department did a wonderful job keeping everyone in line and safe throughout the venue. The Putnam Police Department should be commended for their professionalism and their personal involvement with the show vehicle owners and spectators during this very large town wide venue. The officers that I spoke with were pleasant and acted professionally. I am the father of a police officer myself. I know how difficult their jobs are, but even on a very hot day walking around in the sun in full uniform not one walked by without a smile and wave to the kids on Main Street.

“Main Street Cruise” event held a couple Sundays ago in the town of Putnam, Connecticut. When I say “town”, I mean the whole town was a car show event. Along with my diehard car show fanatic friends with not much more to do on an early Sunday morning other than to meet on Main Street in Putnam at five thirty am to park and clean their show vehicles and wait for the diner to finally open so we could eat breakfast and drink those well needed cups of coffee by the gallons, hoping we won’t fall asleep before noon on what turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day for a car show. Breakfast was top notch delicious and the coffee went down smoothly. It was a perfect start to a picture perfect day.

busy part of the car show right in front of Micky’s Famous Hot Dog Shop, so I did just that. Good thing I did, because my coloring books and copies of the magazine went all day long from the back of my Chevy Silverado. It also helped that Gary O announced over the loud speakers that I was set up in front of the hot dog shop and next to his audio speaker tent on Main Street. Gary O played non-stop oldies music all day long and my toes and fingers were thumping along to the tunes throughout the day long car show and it was loud just like I love it! Gary O and his team were great and they did a fantastic job for everyone that attended the car show event. Very

The activities were everything from burnouts at the mill to water activities on specialty water crafts in the river and the fun never stopped for anyone. I would strongly recommend that anyone who owns a classic car, truck, show vehicle, motorcycle and specialty vehicle attend this car show event in 2016. Putnam, Ct “Main Street Cruise” was fun for the entire family and the smiles were hard to remove from anyone who attended this years car show event. I can guarantee that MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE will once again be on hand for this venue and be passing out magazines for the adults and coloring books to all of the kids who are in attendance next year. See you there!

The car show was advertised and promoted to start at ten am. so of course it made sense for a few of us to get their five hours before the car show even began to help park cars and yell at show car vehicle owners, “Hey! You can’t park there!” even if they could park there, temporarily, because it was directly in front of the church and they had Mass. It was on a Sunday. Of course church was open. My friends and I are crazy like that. If you can’t torture your friends and strangers at the same time then what is there to live for, right? When you have a small group of fifty-something and sixty-something year olds acting like teenagers for awhile you can expect that a police officer on foot will show up around the corner of the building that you just set a dozen chairs up in front of someone’s store front sooner, or later, and ask us what is going on because they are getting complaints from some show car owners that we are yelling at them where they can and cannot park their vehicles. Once the police officer spoke with us and shook all of our hands knowing most of us anyway, he said he was going back to work and stopped to shout at another show car vehicle owner attempting to park in front of the church, “Hey! You can’t park there!” We all laughed at the same time. Gary O, owner and DJ from the radio station, CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

12 VOLT NEWS The Equalizer a Crucial Component of Your Car Audio System GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center An audio system of a car plays a vital role to play different genre of music. For a common person, this device is just like a medium to play his favorite songs and beats. But, this small device has many critical functions that can change the whole quality of audio you are listening. There are several units of this device but in this article I will discuss some basic aspects of equalizer. A car audio equalizer is a complex tone regulator for the system, fine-tuning several diverse frequencies. Equalizers are of countless forms and types. The most familiar types are parametric, graphic and quasi-parametric equalizers. Of the three types, the most commonly used are parametric equalizers because it is much simpler and easier to operate. An audio equalizer must only be adjusted once to defeat the acoustic setbacks of your vehicle and adjusted from time to time when fine tuning the system. Equalizers are not utilized to boost the frequency but rather they are used to slash a frequency because too much boosting can harm the speakers of your components. Car audio equalizers confer you the capacity to tune the audio system to

customize to the sound quality of your own choice. When you want an excellent sound music experience there are various features of your system that you must take into account. This is the role of equalizers, crossovers and other signal processors which will automatically modify your system to have it more useful. A car equalizer is the most significant accessory that should be set up in your vehicle if you desire a great sound which will emit from your speakers. In other words, car audio equalizers control the sound and music of your car stereo system controlling several frequencies that transpire when a song is played. In order to acquire the finest sound quality for your audio system, you need to fine tune your equalizer and have it attuned to the sort of songs you listen to everyday. An equalizer is not purely for fine tuning your system but it is to extremely boost the quality and type of music that you listen to in your car stereo. As a matter of fact, there are plenty of car equalizers that are accessible in the car audio market and you must search for one that will match your needs. If you sincerely love music, then you can do something about your car audio system to get the best possible quality sound. Possibly it might cost you several hundreds of dollars but the great sound of music radiating from your car speakers is utterly worth it. Be sure to opt for the known models that will guarantee performance at their best levels. In this manner, you will have an audio system that will serve you up for more years to come.
