To say that the Covid virus had a negative impact on our lives in 2020 would be a strong understatement. But, 2020 was not the only year this virus had a direct negative impact on our lives when it comes to charity causes and car shows. 2021, wasn’t much better. We have endured so many setbacks again this year and it’s not just Covid related. The weather has been horrible for months. Covid related late start seasonal car shows and cruise nights across the region hasn’t helped and charitable organizations are feeling the hurt on a grand scale.
I’m hoping you can attend. It will be a great time, with great people and well worth the time.

Kansas City, MO, in the bright sunshine, is the perfect place for this Cat to make his den. Julie Bannister, wife of Bill, offers us a glimpse of their 1972 Mercury Cougar XR7 351 Q-code C-6 Transmission Convertible with her photography. Its original color was Medium Bright Yellow, and now the classic Cat wears Lightning Yellow. 1929 XR-7 convertibles were made in 1972. Approximately 358 of those were Q-codes making this a rare Cat.
through a plate glass window severed my artery and tendon. My dad clamped my arm to cut off blood flow and my uncle drove grandma’s 1971 Cougar Coupe at speeds in excess of 100mph to get me to hospital and save my life with dad clamping my arm tight the whole time.” When Bill came home from his first leave from the Navy, his grandma gave him that Mercury. “The Cougar had a front end that looked alive from the nose of a cat to its body panels which resemble a cat’s legs stretching as they run. It was a work of art - the car I loved so much – the car that saved my life.”
Next leave, Bill met his future wife, Julie. “I was dragging Douglas street and saw this platinum blonde checking me out. After whipping the car in front of her blocking both lanes of traffic, I told her that I would not move until she gave me her number. Five months later, we were married. That was almost 37 years ago, and we are still married.”
Opening up the Cat’s history book, Bill shares some fine ‘tails’. “At 10 years old, I was running in the house despite being told not to. Running 16| Motorhead Magazine - September 2021
They had talked about getting a convertible for years. “We actually followed this yellow one for several years as the price kept declining. Finally, when it hit 15k, we decided to drive to Oklahoma and see it in person. A kid was selling this car

no compressor! The kid had tried it in the cold weather obviously (it was about 48 degrees when we got there). We both fell in love with the Cougar at first sight. The Mercury had the white interior with black carpet, and the yellow went with my Alma Mater Wichita State. My wife said, ‘Let’s offer 10k’. I replied, if you like the car, don’t do that - it will insult them. and they won’t sell it to us at any price. Julie stated, ‘Then it isn’t the car for us.’ What happened next, I did not expect. The boss said ‘lets end that terrible chapter in our life – just liquidate it’.” Bill’s mouth was hanging open in shock. “Seems they had bought a bunch of cars for an elite hot rod dealership in Branson Missouri, but during Obama’s $5 a gallon debacle, they went under. This car had not sold and was sitting in a barn gathering dust. That was our 35th wedding anniversary present to each other.”
paint, it is stock. There is zero play in the steering and has a very luxurious ride. I have owned several newer Cadillacs over the years including a 2000 El Dorado ETC, and this Cat has every bit the comfort and ride they do 3,500 miles on route 66 with no backache will attest to that. It is a true luxo-cruiser.” The only drawback to the car is the transmission/gearing. “It needs a 4-speed minimum. At 70 mph, you are running about 3,100 RPMs with the 3.25 non-locking axle. Of course this doesn’t give you much on gas mileage either – about 11mpg give or take a gallon depending on which state we are in or whether I have my foot in it a lot which is hard not to do. It is a small gas tank and she likes to run!”
Every year, they take their grandson on vacation to broaden his horizons, but this year was bad due to COVID. “We decided to do route 66 in our new ‘vert – It was just like it was back when we were kids. It was a good thing we took the car to Mike at Iron Works in KC. The new “looking” tires were actually 20 years old. A competition water pump was added that moved 35% more fluid as we prepared for Arizona and New Mexico which were going to be especially hot! The car appears to be a fairly good restoration even though it was restored around 20 years ago and just sat during that time. No rust. Strong engine. Everything works.” “My grandson, Ben, saw the car for the first time as a teenager. He said, ‘It’s a pretty car, but I don’t see what the big deal is.’ That was before we had young girls at every drive up smiling and flirting with him – telling him nice car! Some even took their breaks to come get selfies with the car. After this happened several times, Ben turns to me and says, ‘I got to get a muscle car’!!!” The Cat acquired 3500 miles on route 66 with no mishaps which is proof of just how good the restoration was. “We did chip the paint from the road condition, but with our Route 66 App, we had a fun trip stopping everywhere of significance along the way. Since California was rioting and shut part of 66 down, we decided to end in Winslow, AZ and head up to Colorado to see my brother. It was Good Times! We literally did 99% of the trip top down.” This is a real daily driver. “For me, the lure is driving - hearing the exhaust purr and sharing that with everyone around us. We drive it every day that there isn’t rain – even to the lumber store (not sure what the wife was thinking but we made it work!)”

1st Annual South Coast Classic Car Auction A Success Motorhead attended the 1st Annual South Coast Classic Car Auction, hosted by North Country Auctions. The auction featured classic cars as well as watercraft, aircraft, ATVs, and memorabilia. Located at 1892 County Street in Dighton, Massachusetts, preview night was Friday, August 6th and featured live music, food and drinks starting at 3:00 pm. The auction started at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 7th. Turnout was great and we look forward to the 2nd annual auction in 2022!

Joe Vitale / Altered Focus Photography shows us a glimpse of the Mad Max world with model Shelby Ruffini and Joe’s Mad Max AMC. Joe was 10 years old when he first saw the Australian post-apocalyptic action thriller “The Road Warrior”. He didn’t even know at the time that it was a sequel to an earlier film called “Mad Max”, directed by George Miller and staring the then little know Mel Gibson as ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky. “The moment I saw Max’s distressed 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT I was all in!” Joe grew up around muscle cars. Much like the protagonist in the film, the car was rugged, gritty, and strictly business. Being an instant fan, he would soon watch the first film, “Mad Max” and learn the back story of Max and the origin of ‘The Pursuit Special’ or ‘Last of the V8 Interceptors’. Initially, the movie car was in pristine condition and fully outfitted as an official police interceptor. The special blower - rising above the 5.8 liter V8 stood the Weiand 6-71 supercharger with a Scott hat and having the uncanny ability to be switched on when the situation called for it and then back off to preserve precious fuel. Other noteworthy and trademark modifications on the car were the roof and trunk spoilers, wheel arch flares, “Concorde” style front nose cone and air-dam, and “Zoomie” exhaust pipes. As the films progress, the car becomes more battered and distressed. “It’s totaled in the second film so absent in the third, but mysteriously re-appears in the fourth installment, “Fury Road,” which the director is 22| Motorhead Magazine - September 2021

reluctant to commit to whether it is a reboot or sequel (or combination of both). Regardless, it was nostalgic to once again see the iconic car.” While Joe is certainly a fan of the Mad Max film series, he is even more a fan of the genre - the dystopian post-apocalyptic world, and the means of surviving it. “I’ve long thought it would be cool to own an ‘apocalypse’ car of some sort. The dream, of course, being the Australian Falcon XB GT, but those are pricey not easy to come by these days. Over the years, I entertained many candidates, including a few Ford Torinos, which one could say are cousins to the Aussie Falcon, but it just never worked out. I don’t exactly possess the skills or tools to build one myself.” In January of 2020, a friend of Joe’s brought to his attention to a car that was being offered for sale online. Not the best photos, but what a description! It read in part: ‘Save the emails, it is not the original Mad Max Ford from down under, but a 1974 AMC Javelin, customized to be a show stopper going the theme of Mad Max, dirty version of the car, it is rough, not pretty, looks like it really ran in the wasteland, beat up, dirty, rivets all over the place, rough as a Saturday night in a Mexican jail but cool factor is out of control…’ Joe wanted it. Bad! “It was located only about 10 miles north of me in Shelby Township, MI. But I just wasn’t in a position to make it happen at the time. Exactly one year later, in January of 2021, the car surfaced again for sale, this time near Columbus, OH. There was no mistake that this was the same car. I was still not in the best position to be purchasing a car like this, but after a couple inquiries and having a good rapport with the owner, he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” On a brisk winter day, Joe and friends made the five-hour drive down to Continued Next Page
Ohio, where it was fittingly being stored in a garage at a cemetery that the owner managed and resided in. “We trailered it home, ironically back to where it previously came from. The car was in need of some TLC, and in the months that followed it was those same friends who graciously helped me get it roadworthy.” The car has come a long way, but it’s still a work in progress. One of Joe’s favorite parts of the car is the dashboard. “It’s full of all kinds of knobs, switches and lights. There’s a battery shut-off to the far right, and separate switches for the gauges and ignition – with a push button starter. On the passenger side is mounted two sawed-off shot guns. They are real, but the barrels are filled with epoxy, rendering them as props.” “I did have the pleasure of speaking with the builder of the car shortly after acquiring it, having been given his contact information from the guy I purchased it from. A veteran car customizer, he explained to me that he specifically sought out an AMC Javelin, being of a similar body style to the Falcon, to make a “Mad Max: Fury Road” replica with the intention of showing it at the Detroit Autorama, as he had many of his other creations.” Photography is a hobby and passion of Joe’s. “I have to admit I’m better at it then customizing cars. Combining that with my interest in the apocalypse, I once hosted an apocalypse themed group shoot
which took place at a private junkyard. It consisted of several photographers and models, was an outrageous time for all and produced a lot of amazing photos. One of the models, Shelby Ruffini, was unable to make it because she was 9 months pregnant and about to give birth at any moment. (Honestly, I thought it would have made for dramatic photos.) A lover of the apocalypse theme herself, she was always disappointed she was not able to be a part of the shoot. Not long before I purchased the Javelin, Shelby told me she was working on making a custom apocalypse outfit and asked if I would photograph her in it. So when I finally got the car running, I contacted her to see how the progress was going on her outfit and showed her a couple photos of the car. This inspired her to finish the outfit and we set up a photo shoot behind an industrial building where a friend of mine works. The result is the photos you see here and my official debut of the car.” (In addition to Shelby custom fabricating her wasteland warrior outfit from scratch, she also did her own hair/makeup). Since then, Joe has showed the car at a few local cruises and shows, as well as online groups and the reactions have been mostly very positive. “But one can’t own a car like this without having a sense of humor and I’m really not too sensitive about it. Not to mention the overwhelming support of those who come to my defense. And of course, nothing but love for Shelby, who made a brilliant post-apocalypse warrior and the perfect model for the shoot!”

The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first
four wheel anti-lock disc brakes and there are Multimatic DSSV dampers. A dual-mode performance exhaust gives the car a nice rumble but will surely not cause any headaches. The car is lubricated by a dry sump oiling system and has a standard track-designed cooling system that is liquid to liquid between the oil lubrication, the transmission, and differential. The chassis is rolled off by nineteen inch forged aluminum wheels with high performance Pirelli PZeroTrofeo R “summer only” tires.

Showing its sharpened claws, this Supercharged 1990 Cat makes its den in Lansing Michigan. Cats have Nine Lives, and the Mercury Cougar theme in Motorhead is alive and well! This Mercury is owned by Tyler Kramer who is single and currently working for Hydrowake, a premier marine service and customs shop. “Growing up in a Ford family, I naturally gravitated towards the Big Blue Oval.” Tyler’s first car was a 1991 Cougar LS with the 5.0. “It was my family’s first new car purchase that was handed down to me. I basically grew up in that beautiful black with the burgundy interior Cougar.” He owned that Mercury until 2015, when a deer accident totaled it.
Tyler learned the majority of his auto wrenching on that first Cat. “For years I had Cat Scratch Fever, originally sought out for another ’91 – ‘93 5.0 car.” That proved to be difficult, even to find a 5.0 T-Bird. “I randomly came across this 1990 XR-7 Cougar on marketplace. The ad had few pictures and info.” Tyler immediately messaged the seller. “After a phone conversation and learning the history of the car, 3 days later I made the trip to buy it.” The Cougar was part of an estate sale, the original owner was a collector. The odometer read just a tic over 47k, and the Mercury was in really great condition with excellent body and paint. ’90 XR-7 Cougars were offered with that same supercharged 3.8.” These Cats are considerably rare compared to its sibling. “The only negative feeling that I had is that it was an automatic,
arm, long arm front suspension that used coil overs instead of struts. Back when these cars hit the streets in ‘89, they were a step ahead with Automatic Ride Control which adjusts suspension based on throttle/brake position and upon lateral G’s. They featured TEVES ABS brakes, a sophisticated Vehicle Maintenance Monitor, and variable speed power steering assist. Those were all factory options. The 3.8 supercharged engine was rated 210hp and 315ftlbs torque with a little over 10lbs of boost from the little m90 blower… just enough from the factory to not make these 3800lbs cars feel that heavy. Unlike the GM sc3.8, Ford used an air-to-air intercooler. The AOD transmission is of the ‘A’ servo variant, the strongest AOD Ford offered.

In a year, Tyler has put 8k miles on his Mercury. “I probably drive the car way more than I should, but that’s why I bought it. He takes it out on nice days, to work, and on the weekends. Something about that blower whine and exhaust note that catches his attention. “It drives flawlessly. The Cat may lack some of the refinements of newer cars, but the ride is plush and responsive. This Cougar is the ultimate cruiser, she purrs up the express-

After some paint work, a detail, and ceramic coat, the monochromatic paint shines better then when it left the dealership in ‘90. way.” This Cat’s most unique attribute is in the mystery of the car itself. Ford’s Supercoupe utilized different bumpers and visuals than the base Bird. However, for the Cougar, the only thing to tell it apart from the base is the body painted grill, fender emblems, and slightly different taillights. “The long nose, notch rear glass, and short trunk were controversial back in its day, but to me the styling is timeless for a two door. It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This Cat receives lots of compliments. People seem to know someone that had one back in the day, or its sibling car. It’s fun to hear stories like that. In a Ford world that revolves around the Mustangs, I beg to be different.”

MONEY MAN: MATT HIRSCHMAN BECOMES FIRST FOUR-TIME WINNER OF SEEKONK SPEEDWAY’S OPEN WHEEL WEDNESDAY By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA SEEKONK, Mass. -- When the money is on the line, Matt Hirschman is at the front of the field. It was true yet again on Wednesday, August 25 at Seekonk Speedway, as Hirschman started from the outside pole position, stole the lead from Brian Robie on lap one, and led all but one circuit to score the victory in the Speed51.TV Modified Madness presented by the Tri Track Open Modified Series. The winning purse for Hirschman was $10,600 -- including the $10,000 to win purse in the 16th annual event and multiple contingency
awards. The victory was Hirschman’s second in the first five races of the Tri Track season, and it helped cement his chances of a sixth Tri Track title with only one race left on the season schedule. The Open Wheel Wednesday spectacular was postponed from June 30 to August 25 due to a power outage in the area. “This is one of less than maybe a handful of races all year that you look forward to and if you don’t get it done,

you have to wait a whole calendar year to have the chance to do it again,” Hirschman said. “This is a big race, and a big win. Very relieved to hold onto that at the end.” Hirschman may have led nearly the entire distance, and cruised for much of the 100 laps, but the final few circuits were tougher than he expected. With just a few laps to go, Hirschman looked in his rear-view mirror and saw most recent Tri Track winner Chase Dowling try to chase him down. Dowling was able to get to the bumper with five laps to go, as Hirschman went to the outside of lapped car Blake Barney. Hirschman would work the top groove on Barney all the way until the field took the white flag, while Dowling tried to find a way to the bottom three-wide. For
one lap, Dowling did edge Hirschman out for the lead at the line. However, luckily for Hirschman, he was able to clear Barney just in the nick of time to grab the big check and add another win to his historic resume. Hirschman became the first four-time winner of the prestigious event after entering the race tied with Doug Coby for three wins. Dowling settled for second, after pitting during a lap 28 caution and staying out late, while Anthony Nocella rounded out the top-three with his best finish of the season. Ron Silk was sixth, followed by Robie, Doug Coby, Les Hinckley and Pro Stock standout Angelo Belsito. With his fourth-place finish, Savary earned the Green Construction LLC Hard Charger award, worth $500. Hirschman posted the fastest lap of the race, winning the Jerico Performance Products Fast Lap Award, adding another $300 to his total. Although the qualifying racing took place in June, Hirschman also earned $300 for his heat victory in the Pepsi Challenge, along with Ron Silk, Justin Bonsignore, Brian Robie, Doug Coby, Austin Beers and Matt Galko. Hirschman will have a double-digit points lead with one event left on the Tri Track schedule. Unofficially, with his second-place finish, Dowling sealed the 811 Call Before You Dig Modified Challenge championship, winning a smooth $8,111 in the process. Drivers are awarded points for a top-10 finish, including 10 to win, 9 for second, etc., and the points are tallied as a combination between the four Stafford Motor Speedway Open Modified events and the six Tri Track races. The Tri Track Open Modified Series will return to the track for the season finale on Saturday, October 23, at Seekonk Speedway for the running of the Haunted Hundred. TOM McCARTHY Mr. George Poteet is a large ambitious man in many ways. His stature within his realm of competition could be his largest presence, but then again, whether or not he’s considering a business move, expanding his private car collection, or chasing a world land speed record, if George sets his sights on something – big thigs will happen. If ever there was a man who lived up to the motto go big or go home; that would be Mr. George Poteet, of Memphis Tennessee. He is a man driven to succeed. George has accomplished a lot in his 73 years on planet earth so far. As a successful business man his enterprise Juice Plus, helps fund his racing desires. The fruits of his labors have allowed him to indulge in his love of cars of many varied types. George is known to own over 40 different hot rods and classic cars he has maintained in pristine condition. Most any one of the precious automobiles can be started up and driven away on any given day. George began life with humble beginnings. As a young man, from a very early age, his fascination with automobiles was frequently at the forefront of his activities. He learned to drive on dusty dirt roads in the back country and by the time he was 16, in 1964, he was driving a school bus. “I would drive the bus twice a day, five days a week and that got me twenty-five bucks a month back then” he recalls. the fond memory brings a smile to his face as he recalls bouncing about the county roads in Itawamba County, Mississippi. 32| Motorhead Magazine - September 2021

Speed Demon II
His younger sister Betty Howard, his closest supporter, is fond of saying “We always say we are from Mantachie Mississippi. No one knows where Itawamba County is, so we just say we are from Mantachie.” From humble beginnings, George has carved out quite a life and legacy for himself. Particularly in the world of auto racing. Specifically in the realm of Land Speed Record racing. Early in life, George was inspired by reading issues of Hot Rod Magazine, Car Craft and anything that had to do with drag racing or Land Speed Record racing. The famous photo of LSR racer Craig Breedlove sitting on the wheel fin of his crashed Spirit of America car, submerged in a holding pond on the Bonneville Salt Flats is ingrained in George’s memory. Craig crashed after setting a new Land Speed Record of 526.28 MPH. George Poteet wondered to himself, “Could that be me one day? Could I do Continued Next Page
that?” He read stories of the exploits of legendary race car drivers, like AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti. And the calling creeped into his subconscious quietly back then, whispering to him, “what are you waiting for, this is where you want to be.” George grew up poor and simple as a young man. He played football & basketball in high school and loved all the sports. That George is an affluent man today is a testament to his hard work and paying attention to details. He has given back much to his hometown. In fact there is a history center named after him in Mantachie, Mississippi. His teen-age days of driving the school bus, and that he Ken Duttweiler and Steve Watt enjoyed school paid dividends to George later in life. He is proud to be the first in his family to not only graduate school, but collage too. His lessons learned there on how to do research and gain insightful knowledge into any subject became building blocks as a foundation for his inner passion: a love of all things automotive and speed related. As George progressed in life, his hard work and studies led him to become a very successful businessman, eventually amassing a fortune which allowed him to buy and collect cars. He also raced some of them occasionally. His early life interests led him eventually to the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats and during the 2000 era, George set out to earn his 200 MPH hat while taking a crack at the record books. “Salt Fever” eventually caught up with George and his interactions of racing out on the Great White Dyno led him to an alliance with Bonneville racer Ron Main. They eventually teamed up to begin breaking land speed records together around the year 2006. Ultimately their legacy of speed would put these men’s names in the world Land Speed Record books again and again, for many years to come. Their first joint effort car, the Speed Demon, has a signature look; very aerodynamic. It has carved their names in the pages of the record books begin-
ning with a record of 262.449 MPH in the F/BGS class, on August 14th, 2006. Since that time, George and Ron have collaborated to set world land speed records with the SCTA and the FIA sanctions dozens of times. In fact, it has been said, Ron Main and George Poteet George has been over 400 MPH 56 times: an aggregate number greater than that of all other members of the 400 MPH club combined. But keep in mind, George has paid his dues, in more ways than one, to get to where he is today at the top of the LSR food chain. On September 14th, 2014, Speed Demon 1 lost traction at over 370 MPH, and the car crashed violently. The machine was trashed, but George walked away, thanks to a great safe build by Ron Main and all those who contributed to the creation of a great race car. George met his speed demon, mano-a-mano that day and came out on top. As the original Speed Demon was fully restored, the next generation came to be as Speed Demon II came into existence with all that was learned from the original. The latest version, as of 2021, has achieved a top speed of 481.576 MPH. The greatest speed yet accomplished by a piston powered, rear-wheel driven race car. DOWN SHIFTING CAR SHOW SEASON JIM WEICHERDING Normally, during the car show season there would be a Motorhead Car Show Calendar Page featured in this publication. When this September Issue hits the stores, automotive shops, car shows and cruise nights the cruisin’ season will be winding down for the year. However, due to the constant poor weather conditions we had to endure this past spring and summer some of the weekly cruise nights that normally call it quits the last weekend of this month are considering extending their car show season into the month of October. Most of us are aware that the Bass Pro Shop biweekly Thursday cruise events usually end the week of Halloween every year. I know firsthand that the Tri-State Cruisers are extending their season into the month of October as long as the weather permits. Their new weekly car show hours starting the first Saturday in October are from 1-4pm. There may be other hosts and DJ’s that plan on doing the same with their weekly cruise nights for the month of October as well. I know there won’t be nearly as many as there would be featured on the Motorhead Car Show Calendar Page and the few that do decide to continue might not happen for the entire month leaving a lot of white space dates that have been filled to capacity since early spring and throughout the cruisin’ season.

The predominant DJ’s I can think of would be DJ Car Guy and Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer in this area and by visiting their events websites information listed should let everyone know what’s happening, and where and when it’s happening, during the month of October. There are still a few more weeks ahead of us if you want to keep on cruisin’ and enjoy weekend car shows and weekly cruise nights. There just aren’t enough of them to fill an entire calendar month. The Motorhead Car Show Calendar Page will however, come back again in our March, 2022, issue, so watch for it. It will launch a brand new season of car shows and cruise nights in this region.

By LRV History has a tendency to repeat itself. Mark Criscione’s brother Ray had a hotrod 1966 Nova in the early 1990s that he really liked. When Mark decided he needed new toy in mid-2019 this awesome car caught his attention. Mark found his very own 1966 Nova that was being advertised by Old Town Auto in Maryland and he knew he had to have it. The car is covered in a custom shade of Burgundy Red and includes lots of metal flake and even ghost flames on the cowl induction hood. The car never sees any weather and is always garaged, and it shows. The interior is mostly stock and even has the factory console, there happens to be a racing shifter custom mounted in it, but it is still the factory console. The seats have been recovered in black leather for just a little flash of elegance. Autometer gauges and tachometer help keep tabs on the engine. Continued on Page 38

Shortly after purchasing the car and getting it settled here in Rhode Island Mark was curious to know how much power he had under the hood. He asked around and checked out a few shops and chose to have the guys at Karl’s East Coast Speed look the car over and dyno it to get a baseline for future modifications. Mark instantly felt at home with Karl and Kevin and knew he made a good choice in trusting them with his new hotrod. He was disappointed with the less than 300 HP that the engine was putting to the wheels however and instantly started forming a plan with Karl to build a new engine with a lot more power. Over the winter of 2019-2020 Karl built a 427 stroker using a forged rotating assembly and a Dart block. He also used a set of AFR heads and an Edelbrock Victor Jr intake with a Holley 850 double pumper to top it off. A custom hydraulic roller cam was provided for the combo by Dale at Go Racing Parts in Florida. The new engine was installed in the spring of 2020 and Mark was finally able to run the car at New England Dragway in 38| Motorhead Magazine - September 2021

Over the winter/spring of 2020-2021 Mark had a custom 8-point rollbar installed by Bryan at Grade 8 Motorsports to make the car legal for the times its running at the dragstrip. He also dropped the car
off at Tubular Automotive Headers in Rockland, Ma for a custom set of 2” headers. The new headers were sent out to Central Connecticut Coatings for an amazing ceramic coating job. Once the new headers were installed the car was back on the Karl’s dyno and after making some tuning changes the car was putting down over 430HP to the wheels. The car also features a Heidt’s front clip and suspension, Th350 trans with a manual shift valve body and a 12 Bolt rear end with 3.73 gears. Billet Specialties wheels are on the car, except when it is in race mode with the Mickey Thompson slicks mounted on steel wheels out back. Mark is having the time of his life cruising around RI in this car and running it at the dragstrip. He plans to race it as much as he can this fall chasing that 10 second timeslip.

When Rob Bourne had the need for more speed from his ZL1 he chose to call on Vengeance Racing for their Stage V ZL1 Performance Package. The Vengeance Racing Performance Package is a complete system that leaves no stone unturned to produce a reliably powerful combination. Vengeance ports the stock blower, installs a new cam and CNC ported heads and uses a massive 103mm throttle body. An upgraded heat exchanger and long tube headers are also part of the deal along with many other items to help make this beast go. The end result is an astounding 761 Horsepower and 740 Ft/Lbs of Torque at the rear wheels with a custom Vengeance Racing dyno tune.

Craig Rice would take #1 qualifier and fight his way through the rounds. The final round however, came down to Kyle Murray versus Chris Rice, with Murray taking the win and heading to the “Run Off ” with the winner of Super Pro.
Ray Rice was a great man. He was loved and respected by everyone he knew and touched every life he came across. This love for Papa Ray could not have been more evident than last year during the first ever Papa Ray Memorial Race, when despite on-going pandemic concerns, 166 racers loaded the staging lanes to pay their respects to THE MAN.
In Super Pro it would be Raquel Gelinas qualifying #1 but the final round would feature two crowd favorites Steve Palmer and Jeff Scafidi. Scafidi would get the WIN and

The turnout was once again phenomenal as expected and I personally would like to compliment the extremely hard-working staff of New England Dragway for their unbelievable efforts on such a hot day. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated group of individuals to help events of this size run smoothly and they are just amazing!! With that being said, we begin with the Pro Class. This class was packed with 118 cars, many very experienced from New England Dragway’s other competitive series including Street Eliminator, Pro Eliminator, Outlaw 10.50, and Central Mass Drag Racers.

But when the tire smoke cleared, Kyle Murray got the job done. In the Junior Dragster ranks, Christopher Khoury had one heck of a day!! Khoury qualified #1 amongst over 30 competitors and kept his eye on the prize through round after round. “The day the ground was shaking in Taunton & Raynham, MA” By LARRY QUINTAL
On the 31st day of July 2021 many residents of Taunton and Raynham Massachusetts felt the ground shaking and the rumble of thunder. This was no earthquake, thunderstorm nor a pack of B-52 bombers. It was only the Warner Boulevard Reunion Car Run that was started in 2019 by Todd Rynhart. How did this begin? Is it safe? Can I be a part of this next year? Is it true there were over 100 cars this year? “Sit back and enjoy the story. “ Todd Rynhart of Taunton grew up listening to the stories from his dad Al Rynhart and some of his buddies like John Viera Steve Fernandes, Dave Henriques, Harold Frizetti, Bill Trucchi just to name a few, of the good old days racing on Warner Blvd back in the 50’s & 60’s. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Todd began at the age of 14 when he bought a 1972 Chevelle and by the age of 16 was caught many times street racing on the same road his dad and the guys did many years before. What can a dad say to his son who shares the same passion? After each time Todd and his friends were caught by the police, his dad Al would try to tell them that times were different when he was a kid and eventually Todd started racing at the racetrack and would never think of spinning the tires of the same Chevelle he still has today but is now powered by a 427 on Warner Blvd (yeah right). I just wish I could have seen our forefathers like Al Rynhart race his 68 ½ Tasca’s Cobra Jet (which was only one of fifty built) racing against Ed Lawton in his Tasca’s Cobra Jet on Warner Blvd. In 2019 Todd had a great idea of keeping it going. Blvd Reunion car run, which is held each year at the end of July. This year my wife and I had the privilege of being part of this long line of rolling thunder with our cars. I met Todd through my dear friend Paul Braga of Paul’s Custom Exhaust. Ironically my 72 Dart was one of the same cars Todd - as a kid would race against - that was owned by his friend Paul Veradt, owner of the Lafayette Club and the Pines, also a car enthusiast who hosts a car show every Wednesday at his restaurant located at 18 Lakeview Ave. in Taunton, MA. Everyone met at Scott Wessel’s place, Bear’s Den Fly Fishing Company, in the Industrial Park, Taunton, followed by some instructions, then it all began. The massive muscle cars started their engines, you could not hear a thing but in the air could smell racing fuel. Finally take off time, the route would take us through parts of Raynham where the young and old were running out to the road taking photos and waving with smiles (We all felt like Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit) and ending up at the parking lot on Warner Blvd. Then onto Brandon Hayes’ place, Motion Concepts, in Taunton where he played old car movies and cooked hamburgers and hotdogs cooked on the grill that were donated by Paul from the Lafayette Club.

It was all good clean fun, we were guided by the Taunton Police (the best department in Massachusetts…my opinion). Later I spoke to Captain Arnie Santos (also a muscle car owner), he said each year it gets bigger and better. All of the street machines obeyed the law, very respectful, he said. Next year Todd is thinking of having a small entry fee that will go towards a food pantry, children with cancer or some organization that will help someone in need. STAR TIN AT G

We recently caught up with Mark Pieloch, owner of the American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne, Florida. When asked why he uses Evans Waterless Coolant in his collection, here’s what Mark had to say:
“We use Evans Waterless Coolant here at the American Muscle Car Museum because of corrosion problems. We’ve seen cars with less than 100 miles with significant corrosion. Just

Sometimes a car will sit for two or three months without being run and there’s no corrosion in it at all. It’s as clean as the day I put it in and it has a boiling point almost 150 degrees higher than water.

because a car looks brand new it doesn’t mean that internally it still is brand new. were in the process of switching over all 280 plus vehicles. We’ve found a lot of corrosion problems with the older, standard types of antifreeze, and by switching over to Evans Waterless Coolant, we’re addressing that corrosion problem.”
Preventing Corrosion and Electrolysis Corrosion occurs when the elements of the engine react with the coolant. When corrosion starts to degrade cooling system metal it happens from the inside out – where water is in constant contact - and when finally recognized as a problem, preventative measures are no longer an option. What your left with is an expensive replacement of a radiator, pump, or thermostat. When water is removed from the cooling system, corrosion and electrolysis are dramatically reduced. This is why collectors like Jay Leno and museums like the Simeone Foundation, The American Muscle Car Museum, and the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum use Evans to preserve their collections. In a conversation with Octane Magazine, Jay Leno reveals why he uses waterless coolant:

Evans has the ability to absorb a high amount of heat before boiling, resulting in the lowest metal temperature in the cylinder ahead. On the low end of the temperature scale, Evans protects to -40°F.
Pressure Decrease Evans remains in its liquid state, meaning it won’t form vapor, build pressure, or boil out. With no vapor pressure created, Evans maintains constant liquid-to-metal contact, avoiding hot spots, and assuring consistent heat transfer. Tests have demonstrated that a typical 50/50 water/glycol conventional coolant will build a pressure of 16 psi at 230F in a hot engine. The same system with 100% Evans would only hold a pressure of 2-4 psi. Older engines often have parts that are weakened by age. With significantly lower pressure, hoses, seals, gaskets last longer. In the event of a coolant leak, Evans will be a slow drip, rather than a high pressure, high volume expulsion of hot water/glycol coolant. DOUG COBY CLIMBS BACK TO FINISH By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA SEEKONK, Mass. -- Doug Coby took a gamble on Wednesday, August 25 at Seekonk Speedway, pitting from the second spot during a caution on lap 57 for a fresh Hoosier racing tire, and he couldn’t quite charge all the way back to the front before the finish. In the Speed51.TV Modified Madness -- the 16th annual Open Wheel Wednesday -- Coby spent the final 43 laps climbing through traffic and finished eighth in the Tri Track Open Modified Series special. The race was originally scheduled for June 30, but delayed two months due to a power outage in the area on that night. In the end, Coby chased the back bumper of eventual Matt Hirschman for the first 57 laps, but felt like he needed to do something different in order to have a shot at winning. Both Hirschman and Coby entered the race as the only three-time winners of the

prestigious event -- with Hirschman grabbing his fourth, and Coby coming home eighth. “I could run second but I wasn’t going to pass him where I was,” Coby said. “I was running a different line than him, but I don’t think I was going to get by him. I knew when we were coming into the pits we were kind of giving up our chance to win, barring the right cautions, and restart positions. But at this point, we were here to win. I don’t think we were going to beat Matt running second, but I think if there was some better traffic there, I could have got up there better than eighth. Four police cruisers pull into a local diner parking lot. Six police officers exit their police cruisers and walk inside the diner making their way to a couple of empty tables in the back near the exit door. They proceed to sit down, remove their police caps and pick up the table top menus. Each officer looks up and down the menu front and back before the waitress walks over with her order pad and blue pen. “Can I take your orders officers?” One of the police officers looks up at the waitress and moves his head from side to side as if to respond with a (no). The waitress turns and walks away from the two tables. “What are we going to do about this self described OUTLAW, officer Green?” The other police officers look at officer Green with anticipation and concern on their faces. The waitress approaches the officers with a tray of coffee cups and some danishes. She puts the
coffee cups and pastries on the tables in front of the officers. “We didn’t order anything,” said, the ranking officer. “I know,” said, the waitress. “Somebody called in your orders for you from a cell phone.” The police officers stand up from the tables and lean over other window facing tables looking into the parking lot near their parked police cruisers. They knocked over other patrons plates and drinks trying to get a good look outside from better vantage points. “Is he out there?” asks, officer Green. “I don’t see him or his car anywhere,” said, officer Lansing. Looking at the waitress, “Who called you and ordered our coffees and pastries?” asks, officer Green. “I don’t know and the cell phone number didn’t look familiar to me,” said, the waitress. “He did ask if we have donuts and I told him we were out of them and only have danish and pastries in the racks. He laughed and said

NORTHEASTERN CAT By ROB MAY and TYLER R. MICHAUD Old Town, Maine is where the den is located for Tyler R. Michaud’s 351W 2V powered 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7. “This car was a random find while looking through the marketplace on FB.” At the time, Tyler had an early 2000s Subaru Forester, and he asked the seller if he was interested in trading for the Subaru. “At first, the answer was a maybe, so I was hopeful. Couple days went by, and I messaged him again asking if he had made up his mind, and luckily he said come on over to look at the Cougar.” Tyler drove the Cat around the block. “Everything went ok, and we decided to trade evenly.” While the Cat made it around the block just fine on a too quick test drive, it did hesitate at going to a new home. After relieving its thirst at a gas station, the Cougar broke down shortly upon leaving. “Managed to get it going, but the car did not like any throttle input. They had the carburetor mounting gaskets all backwards, missing the gasket on bottom entirely. It took me a while of research to figure this one out.” Tyler had to replace the carburetor. screws were stripped and leaking vacuum bad. Normal maintenance was done along with replacing some parts. Overall, this Cat still has most of its nine lives left. Tyler replaced distributor (plugs and wires), ragjoint, both lower ball joints, exhaust gaskets, blinker relay, tires, heater core, and blower motor. “This car has never left me stranded. Twin City Tire Brewer of Maine and I did the work. I have put around 20,000 miles on the Mercury. The car now has around 94k miles.” He added glasspacks, or cherry bomb exhaust, with no cats as it had none when he bought it. “Recently, I installed an aftermarket Mr. Gasket 14inch air cleaner, and that really does make it sound nice. Also, for a 351, it’s not really too bad on fuel with the 2-barrel carb.” The Cat will eventually need to be restored which at that point Tyler would like to go through the engine, rear end, and trans! “So far, it has been a blast. Coming up is new u-joints front and rear and from there just keep going with maintenance. Someday when I have a garage, I hope to make it even better than what it is.” Tyler has owned the car for a year in August. The Cat’s motor and interior are all original. The
Mercury has traveled far. It was shipped to Canada after being built, and the car was in Nova Scotia at one time. After it was moved to Milo Maine, it had sat for 20 years. This was all within its first 3k miles. The car may have been painted along the way. “I would love to know the exact story of this car because I bet if it could tell one, it may be a good one! The Windsor is an awesome engine, and it sounds amazing. This Cougar is a great cruiser.”

Returning to the Cat theme, this 1972 Mercury Cougar GT makes its den in Rock Tavern, NY with its owner Frank Kuenneke and his wife Jean. Frank started tinkering with engines by the time he was 12 (lawn mowers and minibikes), and it just went from there onto cars and motorcycles. “My older cousins really got me into the muscle car scene before I was 16. They had several great cars, ‘68 Torino 428 Cobra Jet, ‘70 Boss 302 Mustang, and a ‘71
The Cougar came along shortly thereafter upon getting out of high school when he found out his first employers’ best friend (Walter Cooper) was selling it. “I really admired the Cat the first time I saw her.” The Cougar was originally ordered by Walter from Daniels and West Lincoln-Mercury in Middletown, NY. That was in 1972. “In ’78, I paid $1,600, and she is still mine to this day.” The original owner was an older gentleman and ordered it with drum brakes all around and no AC. When Frank bought the Mercury, the mileage was around 40,000. The Cougar was already starting to rust out the quarter panels and the aprons under the hood. The trans was slipping, the radiator was full of muddy antifreeze, and the motor had a bad miss in it. All the original owner really did to her was oil changes, since he got that for free where he worked. “After a major tune up, trans rebuild, and a radiator re-core, she ran great. Eventually a B&M shift kit was installed and that really helped the trans perform.” Frank and his brother replaced the quarter panels in 1980, and they decided to two-tone paint it after seeing a new Caddy with that color scheme. “We drove her with one side done for about a month and after a lot of compliments on the two-tone scheme we decided we may as well do the other side.” There is no plastic anywhere in this car. “The hood is still original paint (and it shows), but my brother painted the rest in my dad’s garage. She still wears that same paint to this day. I want to repaint her, since the paint is starting to crack and craze but that would erase the memories of my brother’s hard work. I put the hood scoop on her along with the GT badging around 1980 as well.” After all the improvements over the years, the Cougar now has GT suspension and ‘67 Shelby disc brakes (Kelsey Hays reproduction). with Hooker headers, 2.5” dual exhaust, Edelbrock intake, Holly 600 carb, and Pertronix ignition. The interior is mostly original except the carpet and headliner and interior door panels. The Mercury retains all original chrome and vinyl top. “(Thanks to Dad for letting me keep her in your garage all those years ago).”
When Frank got married, the Cat sat for many years in the garage and thankfully his wife, Jean, refused to let me sell it. Over the last ten years, the Cougar has gotten allot of attention. “In my brother’s garage, we took off the nose and replaced the aprons and radiator support. Special thank you to my buddy, Pat, for his hard work doing the welding.”
At 89,000 miles, this Cat she still runs beautifully and with the new suspension, heavier sway bars, KYB shocks, 15” wheels, and tires. “She drives and handles great (Stops real good too).” The charging system is updated with a Powermaster alternator and new wiring. The regulator is Motorcraft solid state with the original cover from 1972 riveted on. Special thanks to my brother Karl and my buddy Pat for doing the sheet metal under the hood years ago.” The entire suspension has been replaced with upgraded heavy duty leaf springs, coil springs, control arms, idler and pitman arms etc. Every bushing, nut and bolt is new, a major improvement to say the least. “Special thanks to my friends at JBZ Auto in Campbell Hall for doing all the front-end work. Swapping out coil springs in my garage was not something I was going to attempt even with a Mercedes Benz coil compression tool which is a very safe tool to use by the way compared to other spring compressors. (Thank you, Rick, for loaning that to me).”
Frank tries to drive her whenever weather permits usually once a week if possible. “I participated in the local Mustang Clubs cruise last year not realizing how far these guys like to go, lol. I was the only Cougar there, but they are a great group of people and were very welcoming. After three plus hours, I have to admit although she ran and handled great I was happy to get out and stretch my legs. With the new wheels and tires, it handles and rides better than ever, no rattles or swaying like the old days. The car loves to cruise along nice and steady.”
Karl, Frank’s brother, worked at Chester Auto Body at the time which was owned by Tony D’Agostino’s dad (Tony’s Parts at Tony Mopar.com). “We replaced the NOS quarter panels in my dad’s garage at home in 1980 where my brother also painted it. What a mess we made, but dad let us get away with it if we cleaned up the place. It also needed a new passenger door since that was rusted out underneath which I handpicked at the local scrapyard. Surprisingly the floors and frame are original and rust free.”
Most people are surprised when he tells them the hood still has original paint, and the other paint was completed forty years ago. “The two-tone paint really does a good job of showing her body lines making it unique in that regard. I attend several shows a year, usually four or more.” Several firstplace trophies have been earned and most recently, first place at the Spring Roundup show sponsored by the Mustang Club of Orange County, NY in the Lincoln-Mercury Division. “After all the years of owning the car and the memories, I’m glad I kept her. It runs and drives better than ever, and I truly enjoy driving it along the country back roads in the beautiful Hudson Valley.
