By good people I mean genuine people who really, truly love the hobby and enjoy promoting it. One thing I have always appreciated about the Papa Gino’s Cruise Night is that almost everyone enjoys the number of children that attend. These kids are the future of our hobby and watching their reactions to different vehicles and seeing which are their favorites is heartwarming. Obviously, there is a level of responsibility expected of the parents but to be able to share this hobby with my own two kids is a great privilege. When people are generous enough to allow my children to check out their rides, I think they deserve some props for sharing their investment and that is exactly why we were excited to share with you Deanne Morgan’s 1923 Ford DeanneT-Bucket.isa“regular”
In the past few years, since having children, I have shifted my automotive focus from awards-based shows to the Cruise Night scene. While I still attend some of the major events in the Car Show circuit, I find that the Cruise Nights are a bit more relaxed and the vibe is more family friendly. The majority of the Cruise Nights I attend are also geared around food establishments, which is an added bonus. One of our long-time favorites is the Papa Gino’s Cruise Night in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, which has become our regular Friday night hangout. This Cruise Night has always had close to 100+ cars and some of the nicest people from around the local area. And that’s what makes a good Cruise Night, GOOD PEOPLE!!
at the Papa Gino’s Cruise Night and her T-Bucket has always been one of my own personal favorite rides. When my three-year-old girl, Zoe, picked this car for a quick photoshoot I was really excited. We were immediately asked if Zoe wanted to sit in it and check it out. I was a bit nervous at first because the interior is immaculate, including the custom dash and extensive decorative trim. Outside the cab, the gorgeous maroon paint job and miles of polished chrome present the car as an absolute masterpiece. But this car is not all show, it can throw you back and whip your hair in the wind with just a quick turn of the key. The T-Bucket is powered by a freshened and stout 283 V8 that is mated to a Turbo 350 transmission. A set of 4.11 gears makes sure Deanne is always first from the stoplights and disk brakes make sure she can screech to a halt when she needs to. Weld wheels decorate all four corners and some extra wide Hoosiers keep her planted to the pavement. To say this car is a blast to drive is an understatement!! It looks good, sounds incredible, and turns heads everywhere it goes. It THE PASSION ALIVE

By ALLEN HARRIS @ ExecutiveAutomotiveSociety.comVIPPRIMO,
It’s that time of year again and honestly I’m dreading it. Time for that automotive inspec tion. You may ask why I’d rather get a root canal than get my car inspected. The big gest problem is my car is lowered. Sure, it’s completely legal and within the regulations, but for some reason none of the inspection shops got that memo. I have an aftermarket exhaust, but it doesn’t increase the decibels coming from the exhaust, but that doesn’t matter to the untrained guy plugging in the sensor and printing out the sticker. That means that the majority of inspection sta tions won’t touch it. Why? Simply put, they haven’t been trained well enough to know what is legal and what isn’t and don’t want to be fined thousands of dollars for saying okay and sending me back out on the street with what the government deems an “unsafe ve hicle” and they get fined all the time so I can’t even judge them. Truth is my car is poison. Before I go further, I find that analogy rather daunting. Sure, my car is lowered, the ex haust isn’t original even though it has all the correct parts, but for some reason those little modifications make my vehicle a nuisance; a danger and an environmental killer. I go back and look at my record of accidents, speeding tickets, and it’s completely blank. Sure, I’ve been pulled over, but there’s no convictions, no record of where my “loud” exhaust was ever a problem. I fought it all and won be cause I was in the right. Yes, I’ve replaced my front bumper multiple times since I put on the aerodynamic lip, but none of them due to my fault. One was a street flooding because the town didn’t fix the drains, another a blown out truck tire laying sideways in the road, and another a repair tech misjudging the distance to the curb as well as a plow that decided my car was part of the snow storm. Nobody has ever died because of my camber, my performance tires, my lowered stance, or my exhaust noise; at least that can be proven. No dead Bambi choked by my carbon mon oxide laying on the road saying, “Primo did it,” as it gasps its final breath pointing a judging hoof at my car. In fact, since it’s ready for the track, I’d say those things are actually improv ing my performance, making my car more efficient by removing the choking restric tions placed on it by the government while improving its traction and handling on some pretty sketchy roads. Truth is, in my humble opinion, the reason I was pulled over was simply because I had an aftermarket vehicle and there are many who would agree. This really got me thinking. Every time I open a podcast or show up as a guest to discuss how to do meets and shows, even when we’ve had police on who support the car community I’m always told it’s our actions, the car community’s actions, which have been the problem. I know what you’re say ing, street racing, burnouts, speeding, maybe a little reckless driving, but if you think about it, how does my lowered car or loud ex haust have anything to do with that? When I review videos telling me how bad things can get they’re usually stock cars driven by a kid in his dad’s beater, not some avid car guy. From time to time you get the older guy leaving a car show that can’t handle his stock Mustang that decides to take a chunk out of Are the Car Laws Our Fault?

Sure, it’s easy to focus on a couple of bad elements in our community, but my experience with the car world has been insanely positive. Many events I have attended raise in the tens of thousands of dollars for charity. Some examples are Saint Jude, Make a Wish, Mission 22, Toys for Tots and those that don’t have proper names like food banks and needy children receive just as much. I see people coming to gether that don’t have time for drugs and couldn’t afford them even if they wanted to. I see people supporting businesses who get upset when others destroy property. They have to work hard to support their car habit and that means early mornings and late nights. People who would love equal oppor tunity. People that see a woman with a wrench tuning a car, covered in oil, as sexy as hell. (Allow me to reference Mona Lisa Vito from My Cousin Vinny!) If you speak the automotive language, you’re in and our members come from ever culture known to man. Let’s be honest, the truth is no matter what we do we’re seen as the bad guys. It’s not that we’re driving incorrectly, it’s that we’re a nuisance because we stand out. It doesn’t matter that my decibel meter barely moves when I test my exhaust while that road construction and ambulance cause it to go off the chart. It doesn’t matter that the same person being critical of my driving is a soccer mom doing 90 mph in a 30 mph zone with a minivan full of kids that hasn’t seen an oil change since Clinton asked, “what’s the definition of is.” That guy being critical of my suspension is the same guy that cruises in the left lane on the highway in his Prius, cuts off anyone he feels is speeding, and parks in fire zones when he’s just running in for trash bags. Those are, for some reason, accept able. On the other hand you have to realize when your 350 small block starting up in the morning, it interrupts soap operas while spewing toxic gas into the air that instantly
Leno is dying to park at the 7-11 tonight and do some burnouts? Of course not! So the question begs, if it’s all about safety, and I’m doing all this extra work, have a stel lar driving record, where’s my exemption!!! If it really is about my actions then I would think the street goes both ways, right? But it doesn’t, does it. A lifetime of good driving doesn’t undo everyone else’s supposed guilt by association, is that how it works?

16| Motorhead Magazine - September 2022 CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE kills kittens. For some reason you are a mem ber of a gang of vicious criminals. I mean why else can you afford all those engines you go through unless you stole them like a road pirate from passing trucks a la Fast and Furious, right! What really horrifies me is that our own car community accepts this way of thinking. We nod our heads in agreement like bobble heads on recently paved New England roads! Like a child ready to take the Castor Oil because we’re clearly sick in the head to do this stuff. It’s either the cambered cars, the Gassers, the lowering, the raising, or recently the Kentucky Squat all lining up to be the next scape goat for us to say, “our group is fine, but those guys with their loud sounds systems… they’re the problem. They cause all the laws,” even though the legislation has been non-stop since the inception of the automobile. Then they end with, there ought to be a law. What you need to realize is that those laws affect us all. If the Titanic sinks, it takes us all down with it. What we fail to see is how the ship is already going down. Every year we have new fights to keep exhaust shops from having to close their doors. If you buy any parts you’ll notice that many suppliers simply don’t offer certain things because the EPA or NHTSA or a bevy of other acronyms have fined the industry billions of dollars. Everyone originally said, “it’s just the diesel guys because they broke the rules,” that is until it started effect ing everyone and now getting a down-pipe for your turbo is considered reprehensible. Many countries, even in the USA, are forcing you to own an electric car by choking the oil industry and charging you big money at the pump. Many states, including Massachusetts, will ban anything but electric cars by 2035. I hope you aren’t so naive that you think they will just stop there, that’s somehow you’ll be exempt because you’re the good guy. Truth is I’ve yet to see a test that told me why that aftermarket exhaust makes it pollute more or how a couple of extra decibels deafens people. They won’t be happy until they ban all the cars regardless and put you in public transportation. If I can put it in context, the way you lose at Jenga is by letting your op ponents take all the good blocks and leaving you with a pile of rubble. Once laws are in place they’re almost impos
sible to remove. Much of the laws we have are severely outdated. Inspections were created to keep ahead of 1960 and 70s cars that didn’t have the same safety features we have today. Today’s car don’t use drum brakes, have safety belts and airbags and last much longer. Some automotive brands even have maintenance warranties that allow free work to be done, which almost guarantees that upkeep will be completed for the first 5 years. There’s a good chance if you buy a used car it will be in tip top con dition with an extended warranty from the factory already included. Most states either have no inspection or just an initial purchase inspection that is made to protect the buyer, but for some reason people still cling to inspections like they save lives when people with bad cars just skip them in general. We’re also learning that front plates are a waste of tax payer dollars with all the digital forms of capturing plates and identifying vehicles, so why bother anymore? What we haven’t done is fully tested lowering and camber to see what is considered “dangerous.” I’ll bet the numbers are non-existent when it comes to fatality because of lowered cars and the rare moments where cars have dumped oil from broken oil pans is just as rare. To put it in context, the plow truck pushing snow does more damage to roads than your lowered car ever will and that’s a fact. There is no way that artillery testing ground you call a street wasn’t self-inflicted by a town that just didn’t bother to upkeep the pipes and couldn’t be bothered to pay for the fix to the tarmac once it was done. Then put in a ton of loopholes to prevent you from charging them for your bent rim and decimated tire so you’ll give up chasing them down and just pony up the dough yourself.
If we’re ever going to get better we have to realize we’re already good people and just make better decisions. Stop owning the blame of others and demand each person be judged by their character, not ours as a whole. It also doesn’t hurt to try appreciating every car and if you can’t simply let them be or ignore them. If a person does something bad stop saying it’s the car community and lay the blame solely at that person’s feet, and start saying the car community doesn’t act like that. What we’d love to see is more outreach to tech schools and supporting the community with continued charity work. Invite your representatives out to your car show. Teaching our youth how to have successful events and supporting those that do it. Give these kids that are dying to drive something fast a chance to hit the track and do a burnout in a safe and controlled fashion so they won’t borrow their dad’s car to do it in an empty parking lot or worse an intersec tion. Do you know what would re ally shake a politician? A uni fied car world that is willing to move a vote because they are supporting destroying your hobby or livelihood. It takes you writing your represen tative when the vote comes up to continue doing vehi cle inspection, front plates, lowering laws, and exhaust regulation. It only takes 6% of our community to do it. To tell a politician that show cars aren’t even on the list of top carbon producers anymore. The family home attests for far more carbon than our family car ever will, so leave us alone. To protect your right to choose your vehicle and defend your right to drive it. There is a reason I’ve stuck with cars and the car community for so long. Because it’s worth it. It doesn’t need saving. It isn’t toxic, it isn’t a polluter, and it tries to improve naturally. If we focus on the good things this community has to offer and less on the stick lers that aren’t happy about it the better off we’ll be. Then we need to realize we didn’t do anything to deserve the laws on the book and we need to stop owning them. We are a force for good, we just need to start acting like it. My car is a work of art, but it’s a stifled child that is told it’s not worthy to drive on roads that they refuse to fix because they are focused on my car and not the real problem. Stop trying to fix us. We’re not broken. And most importantly… it really isn’t our fault after all.

Many police officers I attend community events with this time of year talk about how dangerous some drivers are when it comes to kids walking to and from school buses that is borderline reckless. Many drivers pass school buses when their hazard lights are flashing putting not only bus monitors in harm’s way but also the students getting onto and off of the school bus while crossing the streets. Traveling in communities such as South County, Rhode Island, have safety hazards when drivers do not stop for flashing over head lights on school buses because they think if the bus is on the farside of the wider roadways it’s okay to just keep driving. That is not the case. Even though many roadways in the south ern part of the state have four lane travel roads a driver approaching from the oppo site direction or trying to pass on the left side of the school bus should still come to a complete stop when flashing lights are on. The students may be on the right side of the roadway entering the school buses but that doesn’t mean someone could try and cross that roadway to catch the bus before it pulls
Busaway.monitors also walk across the front of the bus to the other side to check the area and under the school bus in order to make certain it is all clear and safe to drive away to the next bus stop. Patience is very import ant when children are out and about during the school year when it comes to driver and vehicle Worriedsafety.thatyou might be late for work, or an appointment? Leave earlier, allowing for school bus stop delays. Speed is another seri ous factor when it comes to bus stops, school buses and kids. Slow down. Pay attention. Keep your eyes on the road and observe traffic laws in order to keep yourself and others safer. A series of BUS STOP KIDS Coloring Cartoons are being distributed to grade school aged students across the region to help prevent uninten tional injuries and potentially prevent a fatal ity during this school year in grade schools, libraries, daycares, family clinics, pediatric doctors offices and community centers. Kids will be kids and adults should be cautious when driving their vehicles near bus stops and school buses. Let’s try and keep everyone safer this school year by making good decisions and driving safely. A child’s life could depend on your actions.
BUS STOP KIDS
It’s that time of year again folks. Kids are back in school for the new year. Many of these students take the school bus back and forth to school every week day and this can put them in harm’s way if they are not careful and those individuals driving near and around students and school buses in their vehicles are not careful.

Plastic and metal small versions of Herbie are almost too plentiful to list. Vintage and Modern material deserve to be in your museum. Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels top the list of diecasts. (Note, the author is surprised to see Matchbox not getting into the Herbie ball game). Hallmark did not forget to add Herbie to Christmas stockings by producing ornaments in 2004 and 2005. Revell and Polar Lights plastic model kits tend to be very vintage or new modern packages with original Revell commanding the highest dollar. Scales of these items vary. Magazines, newspapers, magnets, stickers, coloring books, activity sets, pamphlets, brochures, decals, reading books, advertising prints, posters (full movie sheets to general wall hangings), comprise some paper media products. Publications of “Herbie” have also been continuous since the Sixties. Ethan first watched Herbie movie with another form of media – VHS. Hard to believe it’s been 4 years since Todd Rynhart came up with an idea to gather up all of Taunton’s past and present car guys and gals and set forth on a rolling memory of days past, cruising Warner Blvd. in ThisTaunton.year was bigger and better than ever. With over 150 cars, trucks and motorcycles coming together, starting at the Bear’s Den / Faultline Kustoms, located in Taunton, as they got ready for the 12-mile police escorted cruise.
26| Motorhead Magazine - September 2022 CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE THE 4TH ANNUAL WARNER BLVD.
REUNION CAR CRUISE
Todd Rynhart has worked very hard to continue this memorial run. “It’s important to remember the good ol’ days,” he says. “My father cruised these streets in the 50’s and 60’s with his friends, and I have been cruising them since the 80’s with mine. It brings so much excitement when both generations get together and talk cars!”
Todd would like to thank the Taunton P.D., Scott Wessels and all the guys at the Bear’s Den / Faultline Kustoms, Brandon and the crew at Motion Concepts. And, to everyone who participated in the cruise. Plans for the 5th Annual Warner Blvd. Reunion Car Cruise is already in the works!
If you heard the man-made earthquake on July 30, 2022, blame the 4th Annual Warner Blvd. Reunion Car Cruise.
This year, Todd invited the Veterans Lunch Box food truck. The owner, Russ, a retired Army Veteran, had the pleasure, with his wife, of serving up some delicious food to everyone. Russ generously donated all the tips and half the proceeds to this year’s charity Outdoors with Veterans, a great organization who are dedicated to helping vets get outdoors to fish, hike, hunt and camp. It was nice to see so many families getting together, reconnecting with old friends and sharing stories of the glory days of Taunton’s car culture, so very rich in history.
The 12-mile cruise ended at Motion Concepts on Winthrop St., parking drive – in style for a showing of one of the greatest car movies ever made, American Graffiti.

The current owner of this 1961 Corvette purchased it in the fall of 1975 when he was 17 years of age with mon ies he made mowing grass in his parents neighborhood for years. True Americana. The car was 100 % original & ALL THERE, including the original 283/270 HP small block with the Carter WCFB carbs, linkage, air cleaner, dual point distributor and solid lifters. The original Borg Warner aluminum T-10 4 speed was also there along with the posi 3.73 rear end… tired, but amazingly all there. The original blue was terribly faded and oxidized but an original straight, no hit body as the car had come to Rhode Island from Florida with a navy man who opted out of the service in 1973. Although driven very little in 1980, the car then went into storage until 1985, when the current owner moved it to a three car garage he had just built. Blink your eyes and ten years later in 1995 the current owner was in a place where he decided to remove the body and do a complete body off, frame up 100% restoration. After many hours of reading and research, he assembled a lift to remove the body and totally expose the frame and drivetrain. He
The current owner immediately removed the original small block and stored it. Installed was a junkyard 350 with a 2 barrel. It was painted a red ex terior with white coves and a red interi or exactly like the 1961 sales brochure.

then realized, although mechanically inclined, he thought it would be better to seek out a professional. That professional was (now retired) Rick Greco of RG auto Restorations of Southwick, MA.
“I got turned on to Rick through another enthu siast and asked him to put my car back togeth er! After a short meet and agreement, and an eight month wait, he finally came with two flatbeds and took the body, frame and parts The current owner was lucky enough in the late 70’s to know some who had done these projects before on the C2 straight axle cars and they advised him to purchase as many NOS parts as possible as these cars were at the bottom of world value and NOS parts from GM were starting to dry up. For example, the steering boxes seemed to have a half turn of play as they seem to never be adjusted correctly and the internal worm gears were damaged. A new, com plete steering box and column were found in the late 70’s. Many NOS parts were found and saved for approximately 15 years until the restoration was addressed. Many of the original parts were restored, the drivetrain was painstakingly machined to factory specs and the heads were re-seated for no lead fuels. The car was dyno tested to within 1 or 2 horsepower of the original 270 HP specs. Acceptable for a no lead small block without exceeding any of the origi nal factory specs. The restoration was done trying to follow what is known as NCRS guidelines, only because the current owner who, as a rule, does not participate in such events or shows, knew, if the car ever had to change guardianship, it would be to someone most probably involved in those guide Thelines.restoration was com pleted in 1998 and amaz ingly the car has held up to cosmetic appearances that will make most look for a while. The Jewel Blue color (available 1 year only in 1961) is striking. Most recently the current owner has this and other classics he is the guardian of, cared for by Conti’s Automotive Service of Warwick Ave in Cranston.

The last original 550 Spyder that was purchased this year sold for close to 5 million dollars. The Beck version out accelerates, out corners and out handles an original by a significant margin. Originals, which dominated International Motorsports racing from 1953-1958, only had 100-110 horsepower. They were designated 550’s because they weighed 550 kilograms. Or, 1210 lbs. Mike’s Beck, weighs in at 1213 lbs but has an extra 75 hp to push those three extra lbs. Features 185 total horsepower from a 2.3 liter boxer 4 cylinder with twin webers. One barrel of carb performance per cylinder. These particular cars were called the “giant killer” back in the 50’s, because they were killing the Corvette, Jaguar, Ferrari and Maserati cars across the board. They were much larger displacement vehicles on the race tracks across Europe and America. In 1955, James Dean, who had just completed filming the James Dean movie “GIANT”, when James Dean decided he was going to purchase a 550 Spyder anyway. While on his way to his first race competition and driving the Spyder, Dean was tragically killed in a horrific crash giving a double meaning to the moniker, “GIANT KILLER”.
By JIM WEICHERDING He is best known as “Bike Mike” from Connecticut. His car is a Beck 550 Spyder. Designed and built in extremely limited quantities by Chuck Beck who worked with Carroll Shelby on the Original Cobra designs. Most of the people who own one of the Original Porsche 550 Spyders, (approximately only 70 in the world today), also own a Beck 550 Spyder. They can enjoy driving that vehicle without the potential of a catastrophic loss if an original happened to throw a rod. The owner could lose over a million dollars in more ways than one.
Mike first saw one of these Beck 550 Spyders in 1982 and decided then and there that he would also own one someday. 28 years later, Mike bought one and drove the tires off that car for 10 years. This is his second Spyder. He claimed that driving one is an experience unlike any other sports car, or muscle car. Besides being a true mid-engine car with perfect 50/50 balance, the power to weight ratio makes it feel like 600 horses on street. It is so low that you can actually drive it

The early 80s saw Beck’s first long term commercial success with his version of the Porsche 550 Spyder.
The Spyder, of course, is infamous for being the car that actor James Dean crashed and died in back in 1955 while speeding on a California highway. Beyond that rather dubious fame, Beck’s version of the Spyder is renowned for being well-engineered, respectful and true to the original design, fast, and immensely more affordable. “I want to make cars that people can enjoy driving, not that they have to put in a museum and protect,” remarked Chuck. Ironically, some of his cars are so revered, they are, indeed, showcases in museums and collections around the world.

the back of a tractor trailer truck. Mike’s favorite anecdote about driving this car was the time he smoked a Mustang GT on a winding road and pulled ahead about 20 car lengths and waited for him to catch up and then smoked him again on a straightaway. At the next traffic light he yelled back, “Hey! I thought those GT’s had V-8’s under the hood.”
We can’t print his response. But to tell the truth, Mike will on occasion, when it’s clear to do so and nobody is around, he will tach it to 6 grand in every gear every time he drives it which is the way it was meant to be driven. By his early twenties, Chuck Beck was building hot rods and dune buggies in California. His reputation for building fast machines landed him a position with Shelby American working with Carroll Shelby on the iconic Shelby Cobra. After a year, or so, he was back into making cars go faster, by building and racing them.

It’s more like pressing on the brake pedal applying foot pressure gradually while the vehicle is approaching an intersection. We slow down before coming to a complete stop.
The months of September and October are normally the best and pleasant weather conditions for New England car shows and cruise nights every year and with very few to select from, the longer season vehicle events really attract the crowds. September and October are traditionally the grand slam car show and cruise night months when it comes to attendance. Everyone realizes the end is near so they take advantage of it while they still can. It’s a very long winter in New England indeed. Weekend car shows shift into low gear during the month of September before finally calling it a season, during the month of October. “When I was brainstorming this, I got to talking with Richie Coury of Prime Time Photo and Video, the track photographer at NED. Richie offered up a cash purse imbursement as well as other incentives in support of the motorcycle racers. So in a matter of days, we struck a deal and suddenly with less than ten days before one of the biggest NED races that the track puts on: we had a place in this prestigious show.” Richie Coury’s enterprise “Prime Time Photo and Video” has been supporting the NED motorcycle program with incentives for some time now. The racers entry fees plus additional monies they added to the race purse totaled $1100 for the winner, $200 for the R/U and semi-final racers received $100 each. The cash bonus for quickest reaction time totaled $220 which was a total pay back to racers of the money they entered into the kitty.
PRIME-TIME QUICK BIKE SHOOT OUT
On Saturday, July 30th, 2022, during the New Hampshire Lottery, Jet Cars Under The Stars event, a race within the event was held entitled the Prime-Time Quick Bike Shoot Out. A race conceived and assembled by Bob Thopmson, a long-time member of the motorcycle drag racing community at New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping, NH. Bob has been involved in drag racing since the 1970’s during his high school years. During the late 70’s, early 1980’s, Bob got caught up in the motorcycle drag racing growth years, back in the days of the NMRA, the National Motorcycle Racing Association. Effectively, he’s a “plank-holder” on the good ship NED, when it comes to motorcycle drag racing.
“It was my idea to get a quick showcase type race together” Bob stated during a recent interview. He further commented “Since my NHRA Pro Stock racing involvement, supporting Rick Stetson, Pat Wise and Sam Hurwitz, I’ve always wanted to have the New England Dragway motorcycle racers competing in front of a big crowd at NED. For the racers and for the fans too. This is a chance to show a new fan base what our quickest drag bike guys can do.”

Paul, who’s been driving for veteran racer Leon Vandenberghe for years now, piloted Leon’s big Turbo Suzuki to runs of 7.928, 7.923, 7.918, and 7.98 in the final round. That Cesar faltered in the final round was almost a moot point. Anderson’s driving was so good: he almost won both bike classes in competition that day! NED Street Fighter was also in competition at the same time as the Primetime Quick Bike Shootout and Anderson was R/U in that event. All things considered, it was a stellar showing by some of the quickest motorcycles that race at New England Dragway. They were first out on track before 12:30 that day and just minutes before the 11PM curfew, Cesar and Paul made the last pass of their class for the day. Then Paul ran the Street Fighter final. 12 hours of grueling motorcycle drag racing competition at New England Dragway showed once again: if you can win at NED against these racers – you can win anywhere. Special Thanks to Bob Thompson, who without his leadership, this race would not have happened, Richie Coury of Prime Time Photo and Video, the New England Dragway Staff and Management who went the extra mile to get to the made their

the event for The Prime-Time Quick Bike Shoot Out. #1 qualifier based on reaction times after two sessions was Eric Phipps of Chicopee, Mass, with a lightening quick .001 reaction to the tree. Other qualifiers in order: Roy Resesndes, Mike Vizzo, Tom Peterson, Tony Ficher, John Civitarese, Cesar Alba, Tommy Galligan, Paul Anderson, Mark Erickson, Sam Hurwitz, and Jim Jordan of Maine. Eric Phipps as the #1 man was paired up with the last qualifier Jim Jordan and they led off elimination round one. While Eric was close to perfect in his qualifying efforts, he was too quick on the tree by .010 in E-1, sending Jim Jordan on to the next round. Other members of the round one Blues Club turned out to be John Civitarese falling to Cesar Alba, Sam Hurwitz trailered by Roy Resendes, Tony Ficher stopped by Tommy Galligan, Mike Vizzo eliminated Mark Erickson and Tom Peterson was bested by Paul Anderson, who marched on to win the event.

By MARK L aBRANCHE This article is about a man who has built several cars over the years. Like a lot of his friends, I like to refer to them as the “Elders of Hot Rodding “. This is said with much respect in a way that the young ones have no idea. I call them this because they did it back in the day and did it the hard way. They teach oth ers and do it because they want to, not be cause they have too. Passing the torch and showing people of all ages their tricks of the trade and custom one-off ideas that no one would ever know about. How did the “Elders “know this? They would tell you that the “Elders” before them showed them. It’s one thing to be good and it’s another thing to be able to teach and pass the torch down to the next generation. You must learn it from someone. There are several ‘Elders” around the East Coast. This is just one of them and I am sure glad I saw this car and got to talk to him for a short time. His name is Tony Gentile, and he has a beautiful 1951 Henry J that is named Brutal ly Handsome. Tony will joke with you and

Tony will tell you he is getting up in the age bracket and he wanted a good last build. This will not be his last, who is he kidding. So, he went on the worldwide inter web and searched for a bone stock 1951 Henry J. Tony found one and brought it home, and stripped it clean down to the frame. Being the hot rod guy that he is, he ripped out the floors, rocker panels, recessed the firewall, cut the frame off at the firewall and installed a straight axel front end. The drivetrain is an old school hot rod style set up. It’s a 454 with 10 to 1 compression pistons, lumpy lumpy cam and air gap intake topped off with a Holley Brawler carb, slightly built and able to run on 93 pumped gas. The cam is a Mutha Thumper cam for that thump thump sound. This is linked to the 400-turbo transmission. Both were set up for racingbeing the gearhead that Tony is. The rear end is a 12-bolt stuff with some goodies inside Aftertoo. all Tony could do, he sent out the body to his friend Jay Herbster in Gloucester for the metal shaping and gorgeous paint job. Several friends have helped with this build and that is what Tony loves about it. He will tell you they played a big role in vision comKeeppletion.your eyes open for this in any state because it gets driven more than it is raced. You will see the car on Nostalgia Day at the end of the month at New England Dragway too. Tony has driven the car from Vermont to New Jersey, to New York to New Hampshire and into Massachusetts. I see this sometimes on Friday night, Tony drives the car there with a trailer. He swaps the tires out with a hand T bar to slicks. Makes some passes and then puts it on the street meets and drives home. Definition of a TRUE HOT ROD.

The most challenging task that we are tr ying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assor ted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessar y clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use. When perusing through your stash of goods on top of your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind.
“How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful har m to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in tur lines and all necessar y hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. He remembers cruising to area car shows and cruise nights to show his beautiful tar black, 1969 Pontiac GTO, and spend endless hours surrounded by other classic vehicles, his good friends and favorite oldies music playing courtesy of the DJ’s hired by the automotive events host locations on weeknights and weekends throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons every year across New England and New York State. Etch would often cruise with his buddy, Dennis, following his GTO in his own Chevy hot rod, to huge car shows located in Syracuse, New York, Lake George in the Adirondacks, bi-weekly cruise nights at Bass Pro Shop, Gillette Stadium, where thousands of show vehicle owners and spectators would converge at Patriots Place located in Foxboro, Massachusetts and have the time of their lives every other Thursday from April thru October. They would gather a group of more friends and all drive to the Ocean City Car Show every year in the state of Maryland in their own classic rides. Aiming for a first place $10,000 cash prize, racer Ben Braley is now speeding his way to Jacksonville, Florida, just a stone’s throw from Daytona. This will be an allexpenses-paid trip to compete in the American E-Kart Championship (AEKC) September 22-25, 2022. Fifty racers from across the USA will challenge each other for three days. Last year’s local winner, “Swervin” Ervin Vargas, will also be joining Braley as 2021’s Rhode Island champion. The 2021 national competition was postponed and will run simultaneously with the 2022 competition. Both racers are sponsored at the AEKC national competition by R1 Indoor Karting whose go-kart track proudly hosts the regional qualifying rounds each year for top local e-kart racers. R1 has only used electric go-karts since it opened 5½ years ago. The e-karts don’t pump out fumes and are quieter for spectators. But why most thrill-seekers prefer an e-kart is because they accelerate much faster and EV engines are more responsive than gas-powered. There’s even a 3-sec BOOST button to get an extra punch to pass someone! With top speeds of 45mph, the track at R1 Indoor Karting runs races at the highest karting speeds in the USA. But you must qualify first! To be eligible for Speed 4, you must complete a lap on Speed 3 (max 35mph) in under 39.5sec. It’s not particularly easy, but these AEKC racers and the R1 High Speed Club do it regularly. If you’re feeling 1st Place: Ben Braley, 2nd Place: Brandon Pavao, 3rd Place: Reagan Parent competitive yourself, the best lap time to beat at R1 for 2022 currently stands at 35.372 seconds. You might not yet be into karting (yet), but if you love motor sports, AEKC is the only go-kart racing series in the US that is officially sanctioned by the World Karting Association (WKA). The WKA is part of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of motor sports worldwide. This event is scheduled to stream on the Facebook page of the Jacksonville track if you want to tune in and cheer or follow a local champion. The AEKC is a racing series where funding doesn’t determine the likelihood of a win. Anyone, even you, can show up and try to take home a victory. Kart racing is real, not an amusement ride. You may get the same thrills as riding a roller coaster, but you must pay attention to safety while you’re in the driver’s seat. By PAUL GARCIA
