A Colorful Community Blame the recent downpours for the cancelation of most every youth sporting event last month. But now that our weekend schedules—and pools—are beyond half full, it is once again time to get outdoors! And upon doing so we will be awash not only in the colorful uniforms of our children’s makeup games, but also the vibrant blooms and emerald green lawns that are in such abundance this time of year. We can also thank the Southlake Women’s Club for the many months—and years—of hard work and preparation that go into bringing even more of a profusion of color to the city. While we were all avoiding the bad weather, their volunteer army was buzzing like bees, pollinating the iconic white tents of Art in the Square with select artists from around the globe. We met with four of their more notable applicants ahead of time in order to share their inspiring backgrounds. Be sure to meet them in person along with the other 146 artists who were chosen for the April 24-26 festival weekend. Although I personally enjoy the influx of new faces this month, I’m glad to report colorful personalities need not be imported. Our second annual Taste Makers feature is a testament to this. At the office and in the community, this year’s group includes a half dozen local leaders who do great things and look great doing them. With wardrobe assistance from Brooks Brothers, they are the epitome of style and substance. But we start out the issue with a young man who has a style all his own. Raised on a farm right here in Southlake, 17-year-old Cole Wilkinson has already ascended to his first nationally aired television performance. Although his appearance on season 7 of the hit NBC show The Voice didn’t end in victory, super producer Pharrell Williams said, “I think he has a lot to offer!” In our feature we catch up with Cole at his home and take a look at what the future holds for this budding musician. This month’s issue is proof that life in and around Southlake is as colorful and vibrant as ever. Yours in Southlake Style,
Mike Tesoriero Mike@SouthlakeStyle.com

Blow Up The Moon features a range of artists representing country, pop, reggae and hip-hop. But not to worry, the band’s bluesy rock sound is not lost amongst such styles coming from the Plain White T’s, Hanson, Jewel and Bowling for Soup.

The honorees were presented the award during the 2015 Kids Matter Charity Ball held at the Hilton Dallas/Southlake Hotel Feb. 20. After being presented as the newest Synergy Award honorees, Ryan stated, “We want to say [...] thank you, thank you, thank you. ONLY IN ITS SECOND YEAR, SIX TAME STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR STATE COMPETITION The Carroll TAME (Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering) Club recently participated in a Fort Worth Divisional TAME Math, Science and Engineering Competition. This was the team's first time to participate in a TAME competition, and the club excelled in all subjects, including pre-calculus, chemistry, anatomy/ physiology, AP physics, AP statistics and algebra II. The Fort Worth TAME competition allowed students to qualify for competition at the state level, according to Alice FitzGerald, who runs the club and teaches at Carroll High School. While many of the members placed favorably, six individual students from the Carroll TAME Club qualified for the state competition. During the 2013-14 school year, a student approached FitzGerald after class and asked if she would sponsor the addition of the TAME Club at Carroll. Membership in the club picked up during the 2014-15 school year, FitzGerald said, when students began preparing for competitions. Currently there are approximately 15 active members. “The TAME club at Carroll has had a great first year at both the individual and team levels,” FitzGerald said. “Judging from the creativity of ideas and laughter in their expressions, the students seem to have a genuinely good time collaborating as they design and test their solutions. As an engineer and teacher, it's fun to guide our future engineers in their learning.”

CARROLL ROBOTICS STUDENT SETS WORLD RECORD, TEAM TO COMPETE IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION IN APRIL The Carroll High School robotics team recently competed at the North Texas Regional Championships in Greenville, earning its place to compete in the world championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The team, which goes by “Fired Up!” includes: Nikhil Ravi, Zachary Kearney, Zachary Froehlich, Cameron Allen, Anthony Chen, Skye Pekerti, Brandon Vu, Clara Merklin, Matthew Prost, Ben Wiseman, Shyam Sabhaya, Jake Dorin, Jake Rowland, Elijah Snow, Brad Stalder, and Tiger Yang. The team is coached by teachers Linda Woessner and Leah Schwedler, and volunteer/mentor Ravi Venugopal. Yang, a junior, has also participated on the Mandarin Chinese Robotics team for many years. His team participated in the finals of the world championships last year, and had the world record for the programming skills challenge. In a Jan. 24 competition Vex Robotics competition held at the school, Yang's team, T-VEX, scored 40 points and grabbed the world record at the time. “[Yang’s] experience and mentorship helped us to have the confidence to take on the Vex Competition Challenge this year!” Woessner said. The January competition at Carroll was the school's first-ever Vex match. Yang was happy to discuss the importance of the type of competition. “VEX Robotics not only allows students to apply their math and science expertise but also requires planning, presentation, and people skills in order to succeed, and ultimately places students under the stress of an enormous project in a direct competition format,” Yang said.

NEARLY $20,000 RAISED TO BENEFIT GRACE AFTER FIRE AT DONATION FACILITY Gary Humble of Grapevine Craft Brewery Decided to step in and help when GRACE experienced a severe fire at their Donation Station facility at 112 North Scribner St. in Grapevine in February. Although no injuries occurred, the fire caused more than $75,000 worth of damage, according to GRACE Executive Director Shonda Schaefer. The fire was centered in a large storage unit used to stock clothing for their clients and resale shops. “We lost not only all of the clothing in storage, but many of our sorting bins, clothing racks, two staging structures and an equipment shed,” Schaefer said. To offset the cost of these damages, Humble started a GoFundMe page days after the fire. His original intent was for the public to raise $2,500 and then the brewery would match that donation 100 percent for a total of $5,000. What they ended up with was almost $20,000 in donations in 16 days! Schaefer responded with a comment of gratitude on the website, “Wow. I am speechless. This is AMAZING! Thank you all!”

BUSINESS PROFILE
DAVID COFFIN PLLC Treating you with Respect
N
ot all tax professionals possess the special expertise needed when working to resolve a federal tax problem with the IRS. However, the professionals and staff at David Coffin PLLC understand the special care and attention to detail required to handle such sensitive matters. First-Hand Experience Attorney and certified public accountant David Coffin started his career as an accountant in a worldwide accounting firm in the late 1980s. After three years in the accounting industry and passing the CPA exam, he decided he wanted to practice law and started attending law school. Upon graduation, David worked for a solo lawyer/CPA and developed a desire to help individuals and small businesses in tax and legal matters. While working for this individual he was part of a successful multi-million dollar litigation that helped him land his position with the Department of Justice, Tax Division, where he tried lawsuits involving high-profile and illegal “tax shelters” as well as smaller cases against individuals and businesses. David spent more than 11 years working as a Senior Trial Attorney with the Department of Justice, Tax Division, where he represented the IRS in federal district and bankruptcy courts. During his career with the IRS, David was able to see first-hand how the IRS operated and its policies and procedures. In this capacity, David also discovered that individuals with IRS issues did not have many options when searching for professional representation. Many individuals with these problems were vulnerable to so-called “tax experts” who required substantial up-front fees before taking on their case, and who often never helped the client reach a satisfactory resolution with the IRS. Finally, David recognized that even those taxpayers who could afford adequate representation were taken advantage of by their hired professional. It was for these reasons David left his position as a Senior Trial Attorney in late 2010 and opened his own law practice. Treating Clients with Respect and Dignity Even while working for the government, David saw the good in people who had tax problems and treated them fairly and with dignity. He carried this attitude to his current practice and has instilled in his staff the practice of treating clients with respect, no matter the extent of their tax issues. David and his staff recognize that tax problems are unnerving to most people and that it is their job to put the clients at ease with real and practical solutions that provide a light at the end of the tunnel. The firm’s clients range from lower income taxpayers to the wealthy, located throughout Texas. Many of their clients are referred to the firm by CPAs, bankruptcy attorneys and other tax litigation firms. The firm handles matters ranging from assisting individuals and businesses who have not filed income or payroll tax returns for several periods, those who

are encountering IRS audits and examinations, and those who are dealing with the IRS collection process. The firm can also help deal with federal tax liens, IRS summons, off-shore bank accounts, criminal tax matters, bankruptcies involving federal taxes, and most other federal tax issues. If you have an IRS matter that needs attention, David and his staff will meet with you for a complementary initial consultation to determine whether the firm may be able to assist you, and if so, what to expect as to the amount of legal fees. The firm prides itself in being fair and honest, and will never advise you to hire the firm and pay legal fees if it would not be practical to do so.

One in every five will not survive this diagnosis. Thanks to the incredible support of donors like Jersey Mike’s, we are making a difference in the fight for better treatments and the search for a cure,” said Evelyn Costolo, CEO for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer. “Jersey Mike’s understands the importance of standing together for the future of our children. The funds raised through the Month of Giving will provide funding for critical research projects that give hope to our vision of a day when all children are living cancer free.”

His Voice Cole Wilkinson is living his dream
G
ive a 9-year-old boy a guitar, and you might expect him to strum a few chords before moving on to the next thing that catches his eye. But when Cole Wilkinson’s dad, Chris, handed one to his son, he launched a dream—but first Cole had to prove how much he wanted it. “My dad said he wouldn’t give me lessons until I taught myself a song,” Cole recalls. “I got the guitar and didn’t play it for a bit; I just let it sit there. And then I decided, I really want to do this.” So Cole started watching instructional videos and soon taught himself enough to impress his dad and in turn, convince him he was serious enough about his pursuit to take lessons. It worked. Now age 17 and a junior in high school, Cole is well on his way to making it happen—he recently appeared as a contestant on season seven of the hit NBC show The Voice. The events leading up to his audition paved the path toward the artist Cole is today and the artist he hopes to become in the future.

Born in Grapevine and raised on a farm in Southlake, Cole saw himself as a performer for years, and he wasn’t alone. Cole and his three younger brothers enjoyed music in their lives from an early age thanks to their mom, Robin—a skilled pianist, dancer and singer herself. By kindergarten Cole was taking piano lessons, though, at the time, he didn’t enjoy or appreciate it. Now, he’s grateful that knowing how to play piano enables him to use more than one instrument when writing and playing new songs. “Once I learned to play guitar, I went back to piano,” Cole explains. “I thought it would be really cool if I could learn to play two instruments.” With a love for rock music and an electric guitar in hand, Cole took on his dream full force—finding himself as a member of three different bands by age 11 and performing in gigs that brought him to stages as large as the one at the Dallas House of Blues. As Cole grew older, he enrolled in the DFW Performing Arts Conservatory in Southlake, and his musical style began to evolve. It wouldn’t be too long before he discovered his main talent and passion: singing and songwriting. “I was in the rock scene; I went to Rock School,” Cole recalls. “But when I went to the performing arts school, everybody played acoustic guitar and was a singer/songwriter. It inspired me because at the time, I wasn’t singing at all.” This epiphany propelled Cole to become a singer, something he once shied away from. But through his classes at the Southlake-based DFW Performing Arts Conservatory, Cole got his first taste of singing—and stage fright—since it was a required part of his education. “They make you do everything at the school, including dancing, singing and acting,” Cole says. “I was so shy at the time that I would beg my mom not to make me sing, and she would bribe me with new shoes!”
because you have complete control of everything. You’re getting the crowd to do what you want, and you’re telling them what to do.” With this newfound confidence came new opportunities, starting with a chance to join a new boy band. As the applicants were whittled down, Cole managed to make to the final eight auditioning in the United States. Though he didn’t make it into the group, the process introduced Cole to Septien Entertainment Group, a music school in Carrollton that focuses on vocal coaching, songwriting and instrumental lessons. Through this and his education from the DFW Performing Arts School and Southlake-based Hall Music Productions Cole became certain he wanted to pursue songwriting and singing as an artist. So with a new guitar in hand, now an acoustic one, he set out to become a star. “A few years ago, my parents bought me my dream acoustic guitar, a Gibson Songwriter,” Cole says. “I never get tired of that guitar. To this day, I still love it. I love the sound, and the feel it has—it feels perfect to me.”
Luckily for his future fans, he has over 8,000 followers on Twitter, Cole faced his fears and took on the stage, quickly discovering that it was worth it in the end. “It was scary the first few times, but once I got on that stage, I knew I was supposed to be there,” Cole says. “I didn’t want to leave. It’s a lot different when you’re singing versus just playing guitar,
It’s this raw love for music that eventually caught the eye of talent scouts from The Voice, who contacted Cole through Facebook after spotting a YouTube video he had posted of an acoustic session in his band room. “The funny thing is, I don’t post on YouTube much,” Cole notes. “I don’t even have that many views. So they must have really been looking for something; I don’t know how they found me.”

Call it fate, great talent or simply good luck, but find him they did, and soon, Cole was heading to Houston for a scheduled audition for The Voice, just months after writing a song that implied he was on his way to stardom. “The line in the song said, ‘Soon you’ll see me, me on national TV,’” Cole says. “I just never thought I’d get there that fast; it’s very exciting.” See Cole's appearance on The Voice at SouthlakeStyle.com. Having passed the Houston audition to the Blind Auditions, Cole and his mom flew to Los Angeles for a month-long journey that would soon find him face-to-face with some of his idols, including his favorite judge Adam Levine. Given 300 songs to choose from, he was asked to pick his top 25 options for his Blind Audition. He put the song “Classic” by MKTO as his first choice—and when that was granted, he was thrilled. “I thought I had it all figured out,” Cole recalls. “I thought, the judges will want an upbeat song, so I chose ‘Classic,’ because it was upbeat and on the radio, and everybody would love it.” With a few dance moves in his back pocket thanks to his performing arts background, Cole hoped his performance would inspire a few chair turns, if for nothing else than curiosity’s sake. “I thought it would get the judges wondering what was going on if the crowd was going crazy,” Cole says. And go crazy they did, though unfortunately Cole didn’t get the judges’ chairs spinning as he had hoped. “I later realized that it was all the ballads that were getting chair turns, because you have the opportunity to do all these runs and have so many more chances to impress the judges,” Cole says. “They said the song choice messed me up, because I didn’t get to showcase my voice, and to not move around so much the next time. In any other scenario, it would benefit me, but since they couldn’t see me, in this case, it didn’t.” Still reeling from not getting a chair turn, Cole remembers a producer backstage urging him to say everything he could about himself after his performance. “I figured he had told everybody else to do the same thing, and I didn’t want to be the only one who doesn’t do it,” Cole laughs. “So I thought ‘YOLO, just do it.’” When asked where he was from, Cole blurted out everything he could think of, from living on a farm in Southlake to the number of animals his family owned. The judges loved it, and little did he know they would play the clip in its entirety when it aired on TV. “My friends just busted out laughing when we had a watching party,” Cole says. “They put everything in there. But my mom said I had the longest airtime of all the contestants, so I guess it helped.” Though he’s considered giving The Voice another shot, Cole’s primary focus at the moment is planning for his future. He’s been working on the release of his first EP, featuring songs written with Grammy-nominated producer Drew Scott. Two of the songs have already inspired music videos based on Cole’s life, “That Guy” and “Good Friends.” “I prefer to write with my producer, because I feed off people,” Cole says. “I feed off other people’s energy like no other—especially when it comes to songwriting.” That collaborative energy has inspired songs written both for him and well-known artists, but that doesn’t mean he won’t pick up his guitar and write a song by himself whenever creativity strikes. “The best songs come out when I’m going through something emotional,” Cole notes. “I go in my room, shut the door, and it’s just me and my guitar.” For now, Cole is doing what he loves most, trying to follow in the footsteps of his own singer-songwriter inspirations like Ed Sheeran and John Mayer. His current goal is to move to L.A. when he turns 18 and score a record deal. Lofty goals—but something tells us he’s got just enough talent and tenacity to get there. 32 • APR 15

Traci Bernard A career in healthcare brought Traci Bernard to Southlake more than a decade ago and she now serves as President of Texas Health Harris Methodist Southlake. A healthy heart is a key motivator for Traci, who serves in leadership roles with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, the American Heart Association, GRACE and other organizations. Texas Health also promotes heart health through annual events like “Go Red for Southlake,” a CPR-certification program held each year at the new Southlake fire station where attendees learn resuscitation techniques to the beat of “Staying Alive.” People come to Southlake for many reasons— the schools, work, the neighborhoods—but they very quickly find out there’s so much more to living here,” Traci says. “We have a tremendous community spirit, a feeling of shared giving and an exceptionally high sense of values. I feel surrounded by people who believe in doing good things for their neighbors and all the people who live here. It’s a common thread. Bernard believes people tend to support the things they believe in, be that in the home, the workplace, church or community. That belief drives her involvement with GRACE, a not-forprofit that provides a platform to enable people to reach for higher goals. “Most people don’t want hand-outs. They’re really looking for tools they can use to build a better life.” Under her leadership, Texas Health Southlake has received a healthy share of awards, including Texas Monthly’s Best Companies to Work For, America’s 100 Best Hospitals by WomenCertified, and the Dallas Business Journal’s Best Place to Work award. The City of Southlake has also recognized the hospital. A better world is all about balance, Traci believes. “That’s one of the things I like most about Southlake—its sense of balance. Family and faith are strong, which means that commitment to the community and its future, are also strong. The community as a whole is very supportive of everything.” That’s something we can all take to heart.

Terrance Henderson Terrance Henderson moved to Southlake just as Hurricane Katrina devastated his hometown of New Orleans. “I was immediately struck by the generosity of my neighbors,” he says. “They showed a tremendous feeling of compassion, and that has always been my overall impression of what it means to live here.” Terrance, an attorney with Comerica Bank, serves on the boards of the AT&T Cotton Bowl, the DFW Minority Development Council and the Southern Dallas Development Corp. He also has received the Dallas Business Journal’s Minority Black Leadership Award. Southlake initially gave Henderson a hefty jolt of culture shock. Its sprawling layout and modern aesthetic seemed altogether different from the Crescent City’s old-world charm. But the “awesomeness of the people” in Southlake quickly gave him the very same feeling of home. Terrance says he and his wife (a doctor) chose Southlake as a place to live in 2005 primarily because of its reputation for outstanding schools. But the family quickly discovered the community’s other attributes. “We met all the people around us who were into the same things—kids playing soccer, people working hard, everyone enjoying life and helping out around town—and we had an instant feeling that this is where we belonged,” he shares. Henderson believes Southlake’s greatest attributes are its values and dedication to excellence, which apply to everything from managing growth today to building for the future. Service on the Southlake Small Business Council gave Terrance a solid sense of the forward thinking that guides the community. “I know that Southlake will continue to build on the wonderful spirit that lives here today and be an even better place to work and play a decade from now. “Now if we could just get a few of my favorite restaurants from New Orleans to move here…”

Keary Turner Keary Turner finds Southlake to be a place of many jewels, many of which reside at Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers, a business he began with his wife more than a decade ago. A mortgage banker by profession, he also crafts loans at First National Bank Mortgage in Southlake. He finds that wearing two hats is a great way to really get to know the people he calls neighbors. “People come in to the bank, and people come in to the business, and that’s marvelous,” he says. “That’s given me a chance to meet a broad range of folks around me, and gives many people a better way to know who they’re working with.” Turner supports the community through Kiwanis International, where he’s served as president of the Southlake chapter. The organization’s focus on making the world a better place mirrors Keary’s own, and gives his family a great way to be involved. He is currently chairing the group’s 8th annual Run 4 Kids scheduled in May and says, “You work arm-in-arm with professionals, business owners, and others who share the same kind of heart and beliefs that you do. Together, you find that you really can make a difference.” Just a handful of communities in the United States “have done it right” the way Southlake has, according to Keary. “You’d be hard pressed to find a place with so much focus on the schools, businesses, quality of life and simple values. Very few places indeed.” And Keary knows what it takes to do things right. Grayson Allen is designed to “feel like you’re visiting us in our living room,” he says. “Everyone feels right at home, like a close family friend.” Grayson Allen has received numerous “Best of” business awards in recent years. Turner feels humbled to be named as a 2015 Tastemaker. He adds, “But I think I like being associated with others who believe in giving back.”

Kelly Foreman Kelly Foreman started MopTop Hair Care as an entrepreneurial venture, but also as a mission. Helping people, particularly young women with frizzy hair, feel better about their appearance can be paramount in helping them to feel better about themselves. And that can be key to achieving their personal best in life. “People tend to create an impression of others within the first three seconds of meeting them,” says Kelly. “So how you look, how you dress, how you present yourself overall, determines half of what you’re saying to another person. That can be a very crucial thing, particularly for young women. It’s all about self confidence.” MopTop Hare Care products are specifically designed to tackle hair that is dry, kinky, wavy, curly or frizzy. MopTop products grew from Kelly’s own experience growing up with frazzled hair. Kelly experimented with natural blends and leading European shampoos and conditioners. “My shower looked like a retail store,” she says. Frizzy is hardly how Foreman, who moved to Southlake seven years ago from Denton, sees the fabric of the city around her. Wonderful people and a sense of commitment that is alive and well, are descriptors she uses when discussing the spirit that makes Southlake a good place to live and build a business. “I’m amazed at the people. You can bump into people at the community pool, experts in everything from marketing and advertising to how to run a business, who are only too happy to reach out and lend a hand.” Giving back keeps Kelly busy with several community groups, including GRACE and The Gatehouse, a not-for-profit group that helps battered women. This personal mission dovetails closely with her vision for MopTop Hair – “Inspiring millions to discover confidence and natural beauty one head at a time.” And that’s a beautiful thing. MopTop Hair Care is growing rapidly, enjoying distribution now in Whole Foods and soon in HEB’s large chain of grocery stores.

Mimi Tran Thirteen-year Southlake resident Mimi Tran has a simple belief: If you’re going to do something, give it everything you have and then some. That’s been a simple mantra for the child of Vietnamese immigrants who operated her own stationery business before hanging her shingle at Frost Bank. Among many organizations Mimi serves are the Southlake Women’s Club, the Carroll Education Foundation and the Carroll Medical Academy. She also serves on the board of the Irving Healthcare Foundation. “I’m simply so grateful for everything America has given to my family that I feel compelled to give back in any way that fits my abilities,” Mimi says. Moving to Southlake because of the school system— as do many—she quickly discovered a community in sync with her own high standards and aspirations. After 13 years, Mimi sees around her a place where “everyone gets involved. The residents here really believe in giving back.” The key to really making a difference, as Mimi sees it, is finding opportunities where an individual can have the greatest impact. She also believes that everyone, whether they work at home or occupy a corner office, has unique skills and talents to give. “People in Southlake tend to find ways to take the spirit of involvement to a higher level, and I see the spirit of giving back everywhere,” she says. “My personal passion is in education, because our children are the future. It’s something I believe in strongly, and it’s an area where I can have a meaningful impact.”

Bradley Taylor Bradley Taylor’s father was an inspiration and prime driver who shared a gift for giving and a focus on excellence—traits that Bradley brings to his involvement with the Southlake Kiwanis and also his leadership of Southlake’s Pro Players Foundation. The Foundation matches volunteer professional athletes with disadvantaged youth to help make sure every child has the ability to succeed and the opportunity for a bright future. When not manning the grill for the PPF’s Feed the Need barbeques, Bradley finds time to serve on the Carroll ISD board, ring Christmas bells for the Salvation Army, and help feed the needy at Fort Worth’s Phillip’s Wish shelter. By day, he puts his background in construction to work for oil & gas clients at Upshaw Insurance. His top job is, he says, imparting the lessons he’s learned to his two elementary-aged daughters who’ve seen kids in need gladly receive a helping hand from dad. Taylor, whose professional background is in construction, knows that character is something that needs to be built early and on solid ground. “I learned about charity from my father and integrity from my mother,” Bradley says. “Both those things mean you’ll strive to do the right thing even when—especially when—nobody’s looking. I try my very best to center my life around those two things.” He also says those qualities are reflected in the community he calls home. “Southlake has a pride like no other place I’ve seen, and I’m proud to live here,” he says. “The town isn’t an individual, but a group of individuals, and everyone seems to be focused on being the very best at everything. At the end of the day, I’m all about that.”

Big Bruschettas and Thin Crusts ENO’S GETS IT RIGHT EVERY TIME
ENO’S TAVERN 407 N. Bishop Ave. Dallas 214.943.9200 EnosPizza.com
54 • APR 15
This month, we head to one of my Dallas-area go-tos: Eno’s Pizza Tavern. It offers an environment cozy enough for a couple on a date but is also a perfect place to celebrate with a group of friends or family. The key for me when dining has little to do with the hype surrounding it. Rather, it’s about environment, ingredients and execution. Eno’s consistently does all three very well. Set in an old storefront in the Bishop Arts district of Oak Cliff, the restaurant features exposed brick and lots of wood—floors, tables and beams in the ceiling. Large multi-pane windows with metal frames provide some distinctive separation between the dining and bar areas. Eno’s had the rustic, industrial look down years before it became as popular as it is now for restaurants. It all adds up to a cozy space that doesn’t feel overly casual. Diners can be as relaxed as a group of college students or as professional as business people in suit and tie. It all works here. Now the ingredients—the cocktail program
and simple menu feature fresh-from-scratch recipes. The lunch menu is a pared down version of the full dinner menu, so I suggest going for dinner first so you can choose from a wider variety of everything the restaurant makes. Having frequented Eno’s for nearly six years, I have had the opportunity to sample a wide array of the offerings. The menu instructs you to “Start Here” with the appetizer selections. Top choices are: The Perfect Picnic, an excellent charcuterie board with artisan cheeses and meats; roasted bread, housemade bread and butter; truffle cheese bread, toasted housemade bread with melted cheese and truffle oil; and finally the Big Bruschetta, a slice of the housemade bread that supersizes what you imagine a serving of bruschetta to normally be! You won’t find any pan or deep-dish pizzas here, which should be fine with anyone who cares about the flavors on top of the crust. Instead, the toppings reside on a paper-thin crust that is chewy

inside with a lightly charred edge. The firewood-stoked oven makes quick work of merging the toppings and the crust. Each slice is so light and easy to eat that in no time at all, the pizza disappears. My favorites are: The Pig Smiley, honey, Benton’s ham, Eno’s spicy sausage and Calabrese pepperoni (the small ones that curl up when cooked); Moma’s Pie, oven-roasted tomato, garlic, basil and olive oil for a simple meatless classic; finally, the Supreme, red onion, black olives, mushroom, Eno’s spicy sausage and bell peppers to cover all the bases. The execution is where Eno’s gets it right every time. Regardless of which day of the week or time of day it is, the staff consistently rolls out well-prepared food paired with speedy service. Take a group or take your significant other and enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail from their bar while you wait for your selections during what will surely be a relaxing evening. VertsKebap
Funny name? Serious vertical roasting By Amy Reisner
Verts also offers local craft beer on tap, because who wouldn’t want beer with their Kebap? And who wouldn’t enjoy a happy hour? I will tell you who, Austonians—which is where the original VertsKebap hails from. Another Austin favorite has made its way to Southlake, and I was happy to try it out.
Two individuals greeted me from behind the glass sneeze guard—“Welcome to Verts!” they practically exclaimed in unison. Two things I gleaned from this. One—their boss was in the building, and two—they were still learning how to pronounce the full name of the German fast-casual restaurant as well, which in turn made me feel more at ease not knowing how to pronounce it either. If fast-casual dining establishments—as so many are referenced these days—are trending toward mass production line ordering, then VertsKebap is spot on. However, each new entry into the “choose your base, protein, veggie and sauce combo” market has to have their niche. Lest they suffer the fate of their less fortunate brethren who couldn’t quite figure out how to stuff a [insert food type here] into a [insert roll/ pita/tortilla/wrap/bun here] and make customers enjoy it. Back to its niche—along the wall at Verts you’ll immediately notice the roasting jacks, which are vertical rotisseries cooking meat evenly as they turn. Stacking the beef, lamb and chicken on each jack, an employee thinly slices the meats and then inserts the pile into or onto your choice of Kebap (bread), wrap (tortilla) or salad (spring mix). Also available as a protein: veggie patties and falafel. Next, you choose which veggies you’d like to add such as red cabbage, cucumber, corn or even jalapeno. The house, garlic and spicy red sauces are yogurt-based, but they also offer vinaigrette. Grilled veggies and Feta cheese—normally served at an upcharge— were offered free of charge the day I visited. I chose the Kebap—originating in Turkey—which is partially leavened pide bread, grilled to order—like a Panini sandwich would be. My Kebap was filled with beef and red cabbage, grilled veggies and garlic sauce. (Although it looked and smelled delicious, I decided to dine at my office, so I would be delaying my gratification.) VertsKebap draws inspiration from a number of cultures when it comes to its flavors and cooking styles. Despite the Kebap’s Turkish origination, it goes by many other monikers, and it quickly proliferated around the globe. However, the VertsKebap founders brought what they were used to finding in their home country of Germany—the döner kebap—to the states.

It’s Greek to Me! Central Market ‘s latest Passport series
Photos courtesy of Central Market
Known for bringing old—and new—world culture to the foodie masses in Texas, Central Market’s popular Passport series will be honoring Greece April 29-May 12. During Passport Greece, Central Market stores will be teeming with a wide array of Greek comestibles. Expect classes, wine dinners, product samplings and tours throughout the two-week festival. In years past, Central Market has allowed patrons to “visit” such other countries as Italy, Spain and Argentina—bringing food, wines, spices, coffees, cheeses, and all manner of pastas, produce, meats and seafood to Texas shores. “Passport is much more than a weekend product sampling—it is a virtual in-country voyage of culinary discovery, without the plane ticket and the hassles of travel,” according to Paul Harty, general manager, Central Market-Southlake. All of the Central Market locations will be offering Grecian products that include barrel-aged Feta cheese, exotic Greek olives, traditional Greek pastries and baked goods such as Sesame Koulouri and Baklava, dips and spreads such as authentic Tzatziki, Greek Feta and spinach dip, and hundreds more. “You’ll also have the opportunity to indulge in Greek wines, brought by the country’s top wineries and vintners, straight from the island’s ancient vineyards,” Harty says. Greek winemakers will serve as special guests at various Central Market locations—including the one in Southlake—during festival. Inspiring and authentic culinary experts also will be a part of Passport Greece, to share their knowledge and love of Greek cuisine with cooking classes and food demonstrations. For class schedule information visit CentralMarket.com. Always home to a variety of seasonal and timely food and drink offerings, Central Market in Southlake knows how to treat their customers, and those that visit the grocer during Passport Greece will not be disappointed.

t’s finally here. The Apple answer for all your go-go-gadget watch desires—and it doesn’t disappoint. This new-age device goes way beyond the calculator watches of old. Through voice commands, finger touches and button pushes, the Apple watch offers access to all of your favorite smartphone features, such as calendars, phone calls, photos—and many, many more. You are probably already familiar with how the watch will look. The case is reminiscent of the one that houses your iPhone 6, though the watch will work with iPhone 5s as well—and yes, you must have an iPhone for the watch to be functional. It will come in one of three versions. On the lower end of the offerings, the Apple Sports watch

For instance, what the watch shows on its face while at rest—time, upcoming calendar events, reminders—is just one of the few things that are customizable. Of course, the real magic begins when you lift your wrist, and the watch

comes to life. Available apps bubble up to the surface of the watch display in the form of small circles. You can access the apps through touchsensor glass top—which is pressure-sensitive so it knows the difference between a hard, soft, short and long tap. The watch crown will also allow you to sort through menus or resize photos. And a single button on the side of the watch provides myriad of functions from accessing a recent contacts list to moving backward through a menu. Simply say, “Hey Siri,” and you can ask the Apple wizard to set an alarm, answer a question or remind you of something. On the back, a pressure sensor keeps track of your heartbeat, so all of those Apple health apps will come alive in a new way, allowing you to track fitness like never
before (goodbye FitBug!)—it can track calories burned, steps and even let you know if you’ve been sitting for too long. As for battery life? The Apple watch is said to last 18 hours, so you will have to charge it every night through a magnetic charger that attaches to the back of the phone. So go ahead, strap one on and use it to check messages, take calls, idly browse Instagram or even set your home alarm and doorlocks — and enjoy the freedom of not having to dig your phone out of your pocket to do so. Ready to buy your own Apple watch? You can begin to preorder on April 10, and the watch will be available at the store on April 25.

SOUTHLAKE STYLE
Art In the square preview By Amy Reisner
Featured Artist Profiles THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THEIR JOURNEY AND THEIR WORKS Narrowing participation down to 150 artists is a difficult task, considering more than 700 entries are received for Southlake’s Annual Art in the Square event hosted by the Southlake Women’s Club. It is easy to see how juried selections can be difficult! But decisions were made and the artists were chosen—artists you have the opportunity to meet at Southlake Town Square this month. This year, Featured Artists were chosen based on their artistic excellence, and we had the opportunity to discuss inspiration, style and media of choice with four of them: David Bjurstrom, Julia Gilmore, Bruce Holwerda and Dominique Samyn.
75
Dominique Samyn Current residence: Santa Fe, New Mexico Medium: paint Style: Figurative expressionistic Featured Piece at AITS: “Hot Springs” Describe your artistic process. I work in series from events or places, which moved me. Through scraping, layering, automatic writing and reworking I go to a place beyond my control. In the process I deliberately chose clashing colors, shifting planes, trying to break all the rules. I need the chaos first then order. My main object is to direct the viewer through constant discovery in my paintings. Energy, color and surprise are three main elements in my work. What are your favorite subjects to paint? About nine years ago we moved to the high desert in New Mexico. We acquired horses, mules and donkeys, perfect for life on the ranch. Horses started to appear in my abstract work. I saw them everywhere. They became my subject. I don’t claim to make horse portraits but I want to convey the horses beauty, strength and spirit. The landscape of my beautiful surroundings is also a big inspiration. What was the inspiration behind the piece you submitted for Art in the Square? The painting “Hot Springs’ has the abstracted landscape and the horses coming back home. This is a daily view from my studio. The animals have free range and I am always on the look out from my studio to go and greet them.

SOUTHLAKE STYLE
David Bjurstrom Current residence: Austin Medium: drawing, graphite pencil Style: Impressionism AITS Piece: "Windmill" When did your interest in art begin? I have always been interested in art and drawing—my earliest memories are sitting with a pencil and a piece of white typing paper, just drawing whatever came to mind. It was often landscapes with buildings or bridges, but of many different things. Sometimes just odd little scribbles with no particular meaning. I tell stories of the subject in my mind as I was drawing them. What is your style of art? Although many who look at my drawings comment that they look like photographs, I like to think I go beyond that level. Yes, they often have a great deal of detail and may appear almost photorealistic, but if one were to hold the drawing up to a photo of the subject, it would be clear just how far away I move from that image. I guess I think of my work more like a kind of “impressionism.” It’s all about creating light and shadow, as the great impressionist painters did. This is your first year at Art in the Square, right? I’m thrilled to be a part of Art in the Square in 2015. This will be my first time at the show that I’ve heard so much about from my fellow artists. It was even more of an honor to find that I had been selected to be one of the featured artists. There’s always so much talent here that being put into that very special group is truly wonderful.

Bruce Holwerda Current residence: Hoover, Alabama Medium: paint Style: surreal, fantasy with a touch of Super Heroism AITS Piece: “The Main Event” When did your interests in art begin? For as long as I can remember I have loved art. Even as a young boy I was happiest when we were doing art projects in school. I would often come home and continue the project until I was satisfied with the end result. I remember spending many Friday nights and Saturday mornings drawing or painting or making some strange creation when I could have been out having fun with the neighborhood kids. So I guess it figures that even now, 40 something years later, I am still drawing and painting even when I could be relaxing. Did you have a change of heart after art school? After graduating from art school, I was like most creative people when thrown into the real world—I didn't have enough moxie. I had the credentials, the portfolio and the energy to get out there and find a job. However, after sending out resumes and waiting in vain for responses, I soon gave up and focused on making a living. I never fully gave up on the idea of being an artist, but had no idea how or if that it would ever happen. Why do you enjoy exhibiting at art fairs? Part of my reconnection with the art world was exhibiting at fairs. I realized that talking with others about my art was rewarding and helped my work improve. I also understood the possibility in actually making a living at doing the thing you love. After 15 years of exhibiting at art fairs from Naples, Florida to Kansas City, Kansas, I can honestly say that I still enjoy it.

What is your artistic style? I paint the world around me, and I see beauty everywhere—even in the most mundane objects. What do they tell authors?—Write what you know. Washington, D.C. FESTIVAL SEASON IN FULL SWING
S
tanding in the middle of a busy street in our nation’s capital, you cannot help but swell with pride. Everywhere you turn, monuments honoring former presidents, stunning historic architecture and buildings housing our government at work surround you. There is no better time to visit D.C. than in April, when the city is overrun with cherry blossoms and the weather is finally nice enough to walk outside.
History at your fingertips
In D.C., springtime is celebrated with the arrival of blooming cherry blossoms and the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The cherry blossom trees were a gift from Japan in the early 1900's signifying an international friendship. The fun, three-week festival—lasting through April 12—brings together people from all over the country to celebrate spring and the beautiful cherry blossoms. During the festival, enjoy the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks show—eight hours of live music, delicious food options and a spectacular fireworks show. The festival ends with a fantastic parade down Constitution Avenue, which features celebrity entertainers, marching bands and larger-than-life helium balloons. After you kick off your visit with the cherry blossoms, head over to Ford’s Theatre to be a part of history in the making. History buffs

will know that this year, April 15 marks the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. This infamous day is remembered with the Lincoln Tribute, an all-night event beginning April 14 and stretching into the wee hours. You will learn about Lincoln through panel discussions and ranger talks. The Ford’s Theatre campus will be open all night for tours, and you can catch actors stationed throughout who will tell you their characters’ first-hand accounts of the assassination. Church bells will toll across the city at exactly 7:22 a.m., the time of Lincoln’s death, complete with a wreath-laying ceremony to honor our 16th president. A visit to D.C. would not be complete without checking out the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex. At first, it can be a little overwhelming, with 19 museums to choose from, so you have to narrow down what you want to see. Many of the buildings may make you feel like you are walking into a castle. Visit the National Air and Space Museum to view the Wright Brothers’ planes, real aircrafts that flew during World War II and

Where to dine You cannot go to Washington, D.C., without dining on good ol’ fashioned American cuisine. The Blue Duck Tavern is the go-to place for upscale American food with rustic charm. Next to every item on the menu, you’ll find the city from where the ingredients are sourced—so you know you are eating something local and fresh. From roasted bison hanger steak to lemon-brined organic chicken, most of their simple, wholesome menu is cooked in the large wood-burning oven. P.J. Clarke’s is the perfect place for a patio lunch near the White House. Entering through the Walt Disney solarium, you can dine in the sidecar dining room, surrounded by portraits of former presidents, or you can go upstairs to the main dining room. There, you can enjoy oysters and clams from the raw bar, which was originally an ice cream counter back when the building opened in the 1800s. Whether you are in the mood for steaks or seafood, there is something for everyone. BlueDuckTavern.com, PJClarkes.com

Guide to Local Museums WHERE TO GO FOR: SCULPTURES NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER / DALLAS While viewing a painting may elicit a feeling of connection to the person, place or thing represented in the work, standing next to—in close proximity—an actual 3D sculpture is a much different experience. The Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas has more than 300 pieces in its permanent collection, but welcomes a variety of exhibits throughout the year. Now through May 10, the Melvin Edwards: Five Decades exhibit will be on display at the Nasher. Working primarily in welded steel, Edwards is perhaps best known for his Lynch Fragments, an ongoing series of small-scale reliefs born out of the social and political turmoil of the civil rights movement. WHERE TO GO FOR: AMERICAN ART AMON CARTER MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART / FORT WORTH

With a swipe of your thumb and the press of a “button” you’re able to record as many moments in history as your smartphone’s memory will allow. Not so centuries ago. America’s early history was recorded through illustrations and paintings. Books with hand-drawn illustrations show first encounters with the flora and fauna of the landscape, and paintings captured countrysides devoid of buildings and sidewalks. American art at the Amon Cater is as diverse as it comes, but still united by one theme. Step back in time to browse through these snapshots of history depicted by American art. WHERE TO GO FOR: THE CLASSICS KIMBELL ART MUSEUM / FORT WORTH Museums can be intimidating with wall after wall, and hall after hall of paintings and drawings. And that’s exactly what the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth wanted to avoid. With quality over quantity in mind, the museum’s permanent collection is made up of fewer than 350 works of art. The Kimbell's holdings of antiquities range from the Egyptian Old Kingdom of the third millennium B.C. through ancient Assyria, Greece, and Rome, and to the Early Christian Church in the fifth century. The Kimbell also houses European, Asian, Precolumbian, and African and Oeanic art. WHERE TO GO FOR: MODERN ART MODERN ART MUSEUM OF FORT WORTH / FORT WORTH

A complete 180 from the museums listed above, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is the art equivalent of a great 70s and 80s radio station. Of course displaying more than just representations from this time period, The Modern—as it is nicknamed—includes all major, international movements: Abstract Expressionism; British, German, French, and American Pop; Color Field Painting; Minimalism; Conceptualism; PostMinimalism; New Image Painting, and Neo-Expressionism. It just so happens that Pop and Minimalism are particularly strong, as is German art of the 1970s and 1980s.

In her new book, Renovate, Remodel…Relax! Take Your Home Improvement from How to Wow, co-founder of DFW-based design-build firm LoneStar Property Solutions Kathi Fleck offers a game-changing framework for home renovation.
Reality shows make home remodeling look so easy. Is it really that easy? Are there small steps you can take to remodel your home without the hassle of hiring contractors? Yes, in fact there’s a chapter in my book dedicated to this question, “Small changes — big results.” It’s not a how to, but rather a what to do. It talks about discovering the charm within your home by uncovering your home’s best features, and it talks about how small changes can create big results!
How do you redesign your home on a budget? Prioritize your ideas and plans—there are so many variations in product choices and price points for every conceivable part of the remodel that most professionals can produce a plan within just about any realistic budget. In fact, when a client gives me their budget range in the first meeting, I can give them fixed prices and work within that budget—with no surprises later on— assuming there are no hidden issues, such as faulty wiring in the walls, water damage hidden behind walls, etc.
What are the top three trends you’re seeing in home design right now? Grey as the new neutral color. Many are moving away from warm brown and taupe tones, creating a cooler, more contemporary palette with grey and white.
Clean lines in cabinets, plumbing and lighting fixtures, cabinet hardware and flooring. The Old World, Tuscan look with ornate lighting fixtures, heavy metal and decorative design is moving out of the picture. Most homeowners want the less-ismore look and request an aesthetic with timeless appeal for their homes. In working with Baby Boomers who desire to age in place, I’ve learned that they want this to be their last remodel, and they plan to spend their time enjoying life with little time spent on home upkeep. We choose a simple style for the door design, more drawers and pull-outs in cabinets, elongated cabinet hardware for easy use and so on.
Easy care in flooring, especially with the new wood-look floor tile. This is very easy to care for, child- and pet-friendly, low maintenance and very stylish with many varied looks, from rustic to smooth.
What does aging in place mean? Aging in place refers to universal design, which involves creating an environment that is accessible to older people, people without disabilities and people with disabilities. It enables anyone to live in a home independently, safely and comfortably. Whether due to age or other health factors, people often find it increasingly difficult to move around in their homes as they grow older. It’s harder to get in the bathtub, cabinet doors aren’t as easy to reach as they once were, or the lighting in the home isn’t as adequate as it once seemed. Despite this, you may not want to move out of the home you’ve lived in for years—the home you know and love.

Hiring an attorney to represent you in your divorce is not required in Texas, but is probably in your best interest. Even divorces that appear straightforward can quickly become complicated and contested—especially when custody, child support or property issues are involved. An attorney can help you navigate through the complexities and uncertainties of divorce —making a difficult and emotional process a little easier.

Overparenting or Conversation Starter? Smartphone App Monitors Kids’ Cyber Lives
B
y the age of 2, most kids have been introduced to the digital world, and their exposure only increases as they get older. By 12, most have received their first mobile phone. And nearly all—90 percent—of teens are online. These young adults have known the cyber world their whole lives—so now wonder they have an ability to adapt to new technology, apps, gadgets, forms of communication fast—faster than you can keep up. “The thing is that our kids are digital mavens now,” says Ameeta Jain, co-founder of TeenSafe, a smartphone monitoring app. Jain says that she began developing the app after discovering cyber-bulling firsthand—at the time, she hadn’t even known it existed. “My son had his laptop open and Facebook page streaming—I saw this abusive conversation, and I realized that there was such a thing as cyber bullying.” She sprung into action. Jain and her husband owned a tech company, and through that company, they began developing an aid for parents who wanted to access their kids’ cyber lives, launching TeenSafe in 2011. To help parents guard against this and other dangers, TeenSafe can be installed on a teenager’s phone without him or her knowing it, and offers access to the teen’s Facebook feed, text messages, call history, web activity, Instagram posts, Kik messages, Whatsapp, location history and more. Some caution that such monitoring can lead to overparenting—which in turn can cause the child to rely too much on the parent, to resent the parent or to lose trust in the parent. Jain believes the app’s proper use is as an aid to be used respectfully and lovingly—to help the parent know when to step in as the teen grows into adulthood. “It all started from this desire to protect and guide our children, and to be in the know, when something comes up, to be able to start a conversation,” she says. Jain believes that teenagers may not be prepared fully for the decisions they have to make online.
92 • APR 15
Many of them simply have not developed enough; others do not have the experience or perspective to make the best choices. Ultimately, Jain says, TeenSafe is there to help the parent know when it’s time to step in. When parents hand over the child’s first smartphone, it might be time to have conversations about what children should do when they encounter strangers online, if they’re pressured to participate in sexting, if they witness or become victim to cyberbullying, and how to know what kindof material is acceptable for them to see and not see.
Jain believes that monitoring should ultimately be part of that conversation. “What we want is that for every child who picks up a smart phone, TeenSafe is part and parcel for the course,” she says of the tool. “We are missing valuable lessons if we don’t have the knowledge that it provides.”

Sales of Lincoln SUVs are reaching new heights bolstered by the larger than life persona of Mathew McConaughey and the new premium crossover MKC.

fter an Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, Texas native Mathew McConaughey’s star was at its peak. Lincoln executives placed their money alongside the Lincoln Lawyer, pinning the brand’s revival on McConaughey’s ability to help launch their upcoming luxury introductions. Lincoln and their new spokesman have a winner with the latest introduction of their premium crossover utility known as the MKC. Thanks to the partnership, satirical re-makes by the likes of Saturday Night Live, and the movement to smaller luxury vehicles, Lincoln’s SUVs sales have skyrocketed by more than 30 percent this year alone. The recent surge has little brother taking over the Lincoln Navigator as the family’s top selling utility vehicle. With the unique ground up creation of the MKC, the second of the brand’s four new luxury introductions by 2016, Lincoln continues to put a positive charge into its image. The car’s athletic physique includes a high beltline and broad shoulders that house a choice of two all-new EcoBoost® engines. A standard 2.0-liter front wheel drive or a 2.3-liter all wheel drive upgrade both offer superb performance. Enhanced fuel efficiency is a must have in today’s best sellers and the MKC is ahead of the game thanks to its Active Grille Shutters, a class-
exclusive design which helps achieve up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway. Delivered with 18-inch wheels, drivers can upgrade to Lincoln’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive technology and larger wheels for customizable handling options and of course, a sportier look. MKC’s designers also adopted a new interior style, which embraces drivers (Oscar-winners or otherwise) and passengers alike with a mix of pure craftsmanship and high technology. Recently introduced at a fashion forward series of events, Lincoln’s Black Label level of interior design brings rare, high-end materials in four stylish themes: Center Stage, Indulgence, Modern Heritage and Oasis. The Center Stage design includes hints of Alcantara (think durable, luxury ultrasuede) in Foxfire Red with stunning black Venetian leather. Plush leathers with French stitching, and available Bridge of Weir leather are accentuated by soft ambient lighting throughout the cabins of Lincoln’s Black Label experience. The available panoramic, all-glass Vista Roof only adds to the car’s sophistication. Having a great looking car creates a need for a showcase moment. So Lincoln extended the signature Black Label series to include exclusive access to reservations at fine restaurants coast-to-coast. Showmanship is everything, therefore the teamwork of McConaughey, Lincoln and their signature Black Label is quickly becoming one tough act to follow in the luxury automobile industry.
