reason for the season Nostalgia hit hard as I walked across Dragon Stadium with our photographer Emilee Prado and five Friday Night Light seniors for our Well Represented 2020 shoot. While almost a decade has passed since I had last stepped on a football field — proudly sporting white drill team boots, mind you — the power of looking up at countless stadium stands and the oversized press box is enough to send you back. These seniors, as well as other class of 2021 athletes, have been looking forward to leading the charge for their organizations for years. While COVID-19 has changed a lot, they are still excited to get out and show off their Dragon pride. And as we celebrate our 15th year of Dragon Pride, we are just as eager to cover it. That’s true for this year’s football leadership, with many players making their varsity debuts. Thankfully, they have a long lineage of athletes making the most out of first changes to look back on. Celebrating that history, some of which is featured in our All Decade Team, and seizing the opportunity in front of them is more than the fire these athletes need to put their all into the season, no matter what it looks like. Several coaches, leaders and fans are hard at work to make sure these seniors get their shot, including CABC President Bill Webb, who you can learn more about in our “Five Minutes With…” Those long hours may have some questioning if it’s all worth it. But thanks to that effort, this year’s graduating class are making memories they will forever cherish. So whether you are cheering on the Dragons from the sidelines or watching the games from home, we’re happy to rally around these kids and give them the chance to earn their spots in Dragon history.

BILL WEBB

THE CABC PRESIDENT STARTS STREAMING, JUST IN TIME FOR FALL FOOTBALL

B

ill Webb wears many hats in the Southlake community: business owner, father, president of the Carroll Athletic Booster Club. But this fall, Bill will take on another responsibility for Dragon Football — livestreamer. After UIL gave schools permission to livestream Friday night games for the 2020-2021 school year, the CABC got to work on setting up an immersive fall football experience. While it may not be the same as sitting on the sidelines, Bill and his team have worked hard to bring the stadium to fans digitally.

THREE YEARS AGO… the CABC moved its website and app to a company called Mascot Media. They have the capability to develop a custombased livestreaming app for us. I have video experience and the equipment we need to produce the videos at the quality we expect. The idea was if we ever had the opportunity to livestream football, we wouldn’t need to make many changes. I TRIED EXPERIMENTING WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LIVESTREAMING… during 2019 at a couple of basketball and baseball games where we livestreamed Chuck Kelly’s radio broadcasts over the CABC app. We really cut our chops when we went and played baseball for four days in California. That was our first exposure to livestreaming on a new campus, and we didn’t know if everything would work. We had a couple of technical glitches, but the signal worked, and we wound up being able to carry all of the games through Chuck that year. AFTER COVID-19 HAPPENED... we knew that there was a very good chance that attendance would be limited if we were going to have football. UIL temporarily suspended the restrictions against livestreaming Friday night football games, but we don’t know whether UIL will bring back that restriction next year. For now, it’s a temporary fix to an inconvenient problem. THERE ARE TWO PARTS... to livestreaming — the production side of it and the streaming platform. We’ve already handled the streaming platform with Mascot Media. Now all we had to do was set up the equipment. The streaming has gotten so smooth to the point where you just have to get a good signal on-site. If the signal is terrible, then the video is terrible, and you’re not going to have a good stream. WE’LL BE... in or near the press box in all of the locations. We’ll have two cameras. One camera will be set wide and stay static looking at the field, while another camera will be zoomed in tighter following all of the action. I’ll be sitting in

the press box from my laptop operating both cameras, switching back and forth between those two different views. We’re also going to lay Chuck Kelly’s radio broadcast over the video and send that out live. IT’S A... little bit of a juggling act. I’m basically doing all of this as a one-man crew. Ten years ago, you’d have to have a production truck to do everything we’re doing. Today, you can literally do it on your laptop with video capture devices. WE’RE USING… Sony NX100 cameras. It allows us to film everything in 4K, which is the highest level for this type of broadcast. With our mixing, we can do slow motion. We can do graphics. We can overlay more video. We can do anything that a commercial broadcaster can do. THE MOST CRUCIAL ELEMENT TO LIVESTREAMING... is Wi-Fi. Most people are going to be watching the livestream from their mobile devices, so you have to have a strong Wi-Fi signal to have a strong stream. That was a challenge we had with baseball in the past, not having a good signal at the baseball stadium. We’ll be using the school’s stadium Wi-Fi for all of the games, but we do have the ability to go off of Wi-Fi and use our own hotspot as a backup if we need to. Even if the video doesn’t work, you can still tune in to listen to Chuck’s audio and get a good picture of the game. THE NO. 1 THING I’M EXCITED ABOUT… is that we’re actually going to be playing football. Two months ago, we didn’t know if we were going to play football, or any other sport for that matter. The fact that our kids are on the field and competing against their peers is most exciting to me. IF LIVESTREAMING FOOTBALL GOES WELL… we’re going to try to livestream other sports. We’re going to try to do some volleyball games, some basketball, baseball, track, cross country, tennis. Once we have the technology in place, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t at least try to do other sports. It’s taken a lot of time and effort to get to this point, but we’re eager to get started.

ou might have heard the phrase, “We are in this together” over and over again — yet it has carried so much more weight with it recently than it ever has before. The unchartered territory that has been COVID-19, along with social distancing, school closures and businesses closing, has shown us what those words truly mean in a close-knit community. At All-Star Orthopaedics, we already knew that our community was a very special one. When this pandemic came knocking on our doors, we wanted to make sure that we could keep our patients and their families safe while still serving them the only way we know how — with our full commitment to their physical health. As we continue working toward reopening our nation and community, we continue to work hard to take care of your physical health and provide you, along with all of our patients, their muchneeded care. We have taken the recommended measures to help prevent the virus’ spread by optimizing physical distancing, which includes limiting in-person orthopedic care to essential visits, emergencies and essential procedures and, of course, adding our new virtual platform for our patients. We are prepared to help our patients move through and beyond COVID-19. So much excitement is ahead as our Dragons are back on the field, embarking on a new season of Southlake Carroll football. While the Dragons are playing hard and working toward another championship win, All-Star continues to provide high-quality care and physical therapy as Carroll ISD’s official orthopaedic, sports medicine and

spinal care provider. This practice has always taken the physical health of our patients personally, one of the many reasons our patients keep referring us over and over again. We have never and will never stop working for you. When our world fully reopens, limitations are lifted and adults and children return to a life of work and play, remember that your friends at AllStar will do whatever is needed to help you get back in the game. We are here to support the community that has been at the center of our business from day one. We are going to say it: “We are in this together.” Our doctors and staff are eager to help you feel better expeditiously and to aid you as you start living a happier, more energetic life. Dragon Pride first celebrated 10 years of powerhouse players in 2010 with its first All Decade Team. This year, for our 15-year Dragon Pride anniversary, we are back at it and showcasing the talent to don green jerseys from 2010 to 2019. Several of these athletes led the Dragons to claim multiple district titles and a state championship in 2011. Now, we are recognizing their memorable runs and longstanding Carroll legacies.

TALENTED TRIO LEADS YOUNG OFFENSE BY Z AC H WA R N E R PHOTO BY BLUDOOR STUDIOS

F

ootball and basketball pro teams often talk about having a “big three” of offensive firepower to help fuel their championship goals — like the 1990s dynasty “triplets” (Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin) who helped capture three rings for the Dallas Cowboys. The Miami Heat utilized LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to earn two titles in four trips to the NBA Finals. Football teams with high-profile offenses — whether at the high school, college or pro level — often boast a balanced attack and triple threat that keeps opposing defenses on their heels. That triple threat usually consists of at least one standout rusher, passer and receiver. The 2020 Carroll Dragons fit that profile to a tee with a dangerous player starting in each of those positions. Having that type of talent at its disposal could be a big key to Carroll’s success this year. The expertise could prove highly necessary, especially since those three athletes are the only returning starters on offense. Junior quarterback Quinn Ewers, sophomore running back Owen Allen and senior wide receiver Brady Boyd logged impressive stats in 2019, as the three were responsible for a huge chunk of the Dragons’ total offense during a 14-game stretch that saw Carroll post a 13-1 record and advance to the 6A Division I Region I Final. This season, it falls on the trio’s shoulders to set the tone for a less-experienced supporting cast. “I’m excited about those three guys leading,” says Riley Dodge, who begins his third season as Dragons head coach and who helped lead Carroll to a state championship as a former quarterback for the storied program. “Going into last year, we were very inexperienced in the backfield. This year, we’re going in very experienced with Quinn and Owen. We’re real excited to see those guys take the next step. They have a lot of chemistry in the backfield, playing a lot of ball games together. And then Brady Boyd on the outside was a key contributor for us last year on a really good football team. “We also have some young offensive linemen that have a lot of talent. They just need to put the pads on and play,” Dodge says. “I think people will see that we’ve got a good group.” Carroll’s big three were all totally new to the Dragon varsity scene in 2019, but being young and less experienced didn’t slow them down. Ewers threw for just over 4,000 yards, 45 touchdowns and only three interceptions as a sophomore. Allen carried for 1,266 yards and rushed for 23 scores as a freshman, while Boyd caught 66 passes for 972 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior move-in.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

THE Power Of Three The production received from last year’s newbie trio gives Carroll’s coach plenty of optimism that other young and currently unknown Dragons could follow that same path and make a mark as first-year varsity playmakers. “What was beneficial for those three guys is that they had a lot of seniors around them, so they could take a lot of burden off their shoulders and just let them play football,” Dodge says. “But it’s been proven that we’ll play young guys, and young guys can thrive as well in our system.” A year ago, Dodge fully intended to give the keys to his offense to a sophomore quarterback, but no one expected the youth movement to be quite so dramatic. A freshman was not expected to start at running back, but injuries thrusted Allen — a promising young talent set to be groomed — into an impactful role immediately. The result was a season that saw the rusher put up head-turning numbers down the second-half stretch and into the playoffs while earning some impressive accolades. Allen was the only athlete from the DFW area to be named to the MaxPreps Freshman AllAmerican Team. He was also the unanimous choice for the District 5-6A Newcomer of the Year. “Knowing me, I’m hoping that they’ll trust me with the ball and trust that I’ll make them right,” Allen says. “I’m more excited for this year than I’ve ever been for football. I trust my O-line. I trust every single one of them. Whoever they end up putting in to block for me on Friday nights, I know that we’ll be more than fine.” The faces might be different, but the confidence is the same along Carroll’s offensive line. They intend to protect their quarterback, giving him time to find the open receiver. They also expect to open holes for Allen so that the sophomore has an encore performance that’s at least as dominant as last year. “We’ve come prepared,” says team captain and senior Dylan Anderson, slated to get time at center as a first-year starter. “We’ve kind of tightened our stuff up from last year and have really been fine-tuning our craft and getting all our assignments right. I think [Allen] is really going to shine this year and get a lot of yards.” Allen wasn’t the only one finding daylight up the field last season. Ewers kept the ball for 569 yards and nine touchdowns, ranking second on the team in both categories. Ewers is expected to be a threat on the ground once again, but his arm makes him most lethal, with a knack for finding receivers on first-down strikes. The junior averaged just shy of 10 yards per attempt (9.95) to keep the chains moving. Ewers’ play as a first-year quarterback was impres-

sive enough for ESPN to name him the No. 1 recruit in the country. He took the District 5-6A MVP as a sophomore and garnered serious consideration from various college programs across the nation before originally giving the University of Texas a verbal commitment. As of now, Ewers decommitted from Texas and continues to field college offers. “I don’t really think that age determines how good you can be,” says Ewers, who proved that to be the case for himself and believes the same can be true for his first-year varsity teammates. “Obviously experience helps a lot, but after that first game, I feel like those guys will be prepared well enough and coached well enough to where it doesn’t really matter how old or how young you are.” It also doesn’t matter how familiar you are with the Dragon playbook. Boyd, who is currently out after undergoing an injury in the first game of the season, entered the fold of receivers last year after previously attending Richland High School, and he immediately had an impact with his speed and ability to get down the field. He finished a yard shy of second in total receiving yards for the Dragons, but averaged the most yards per catch (14.7) of all players with more than four receptions. And he grabbed the most eyeballs after his one-handed catch went viral last year and made the No. 3 spot on “SportsCenter’s” “Top 10 Plays.” “Last year, I didn’t really have any expectations coming in,” says Boyd, who has verbally committed to the University of Minnesota. “I feel like the coach-

es and the team really brought me in and treated me right, made me feel welcomed and made me feel like I was at home. Over the past year and a half, they made me feel like I made the right decision coming here.” Other receivers lacking varsity-starting experience hope to make their mark this season in Carroll’s highflying offense. With one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and a passing system with a proven track record, guys who are unknown or unproven hope to end the season as household names. “We’re very detailed. Coaches hold us to a very high standard, and we just work our butts off,” says junior tight end RJ Maryland, son of former Dallas Cowboys’ defensive tackle Russell Maryland. “We work hard together and try to win together.” That effort is expected to pay off in the form of bigplay execution and drives that lead to scoring opportunities. Senior kicker Joe McFadden, a standout special teams athlete entering his fourth year on varsity, is excited about his chances to contribute points through the uprights as a result. Young or not, the kicker expects his team to light up the competition. “We’re obviously going to get down the field quite a bit,” says McFadden, a 2021 All-American Bowl selection and verbal Connecticut commit. “The team wants to put up seven points, but I’m always happy to put up three points. We’ve had young teams, and it always takes a couple games to work the kinks out and to get the butterflies out. But I think this group’s really special and we can do really big things this year.”

Seasoned veterans who have logged more than their fair share of time under the stadium lights all had to step on the field and earn their stripes as first-timers competing at the varsity level. It’s not unusual to dress two or three — maybe even a handful — of newcomers on either side of the ball for a high school varsity football team. Often, the more experienced players in each unit take those rookies under their wings and help them develop and grow acclimated to the talent they’ll face as well as the pace of the game. Green But Determined For the Carroll football team’s defensive corps, experience is a luxury the Dragons must learn to do without this season. It’s not a matter of three or four new faces suiting up for the varsity team this fall. This year, 11 defensive newbies are leading the charge. “We’re replacing all 11, which is very unheard of,” says Dragons’ Riley Dodge, who enters his third year as head coach after posting two consecutive 13-1 seasons. “We’ve got a lot of guys that haven’t played under the Friday night lights. But I feel like we have a lot of young talent, and seniors that have been journeymen are getting opportunities this year. “It’s kind of been our calling card at this place that guys that get their opportunities make the most of them. From what I’ve seen so far, we’ve got a long ways to go, but so far so good.” It’s the polar opposite of the situation Carroll found itself in last year. Coaches and players alike could draw comfort in knowing that seven returning defensive starters with big-game experience would lead them to battle. What’s more, all 11 starters were seniors in 2019. This year’s group is a mix of juniors and seniors, all eager to play a part in helping establish what coming into the season was a relatively unknown and unproven defensive unit. After a rough defensive start against some tough offensive opponents in the first two games of the season, that hunger to prove their worth should only grow stronger. A delayed chance to start on varsity serves as additional motivation for senior cornerback Cinque Williams. Williams was not allowed to compete on varsity his junior season after transferring to Carroll from Mansfield Legacy, spending last season on the Dragons JV team. “I finally get to show everybody what I’m really made of now,” says Williams, a highly touted athlete who has committed to play college ball at Hawaii. “I bring the energy as far as making sure that the defense is where we need to be on the field, making sure we fly around the ball. “We’re just a young group, we’re pretty much slept on, but we’ve got to wake people up and show them what we’re made of.” Entering the season, the unheralded defense was expected to be strongest in the secondary, due to the talent of Williams, as well as junior cornerback Avyonne Jones and the play of defensive backs such as Mason Grawe, Max Reyes, Parker Schnieders and Jon Cox. After two games, the unit compiled 73 tackles (19 from Williams), one interception (Jones), 10 passes defended (Jones with six), a fumble caused and one returned for a touchdown (scored by Williams). “During the quarantine, a lot of us would still work out together and go do drills together outside,” says Schnieders, a senior. “I feel like that really helped us as a team compared to other teams. I feel like we’re more prepared for the season and ready to take on anyone.” 26 • FALL ’20

As usual, Carroll’s linebackers look extremely ready and active in their pursuit of the ball and appear set to make an impact for the defense as well. Light on seniors but heavy on juniors, the linebackers are already showing their ability to wrap up opponents and have registered a large number of tackles for the team. Two junior linebackers in particular — Benecio Porras and Nate Gall — look to patrol the middle and keep opposing offenses in check. Gall says that even though it’s their first go-round as varsity starters, they learned a lot while observing Dragon predecessors such as Graham Faloona and Preston Forney when they led the linebacking charge last season. “Just from watching those guys in the playoffs — they taught us and really cared about us, they wanted to leave a future for us,” says Gall, who had 18 tackles including one for a loss in Carroll’s first two games this season. “We’re getting after it every day. We might be young, but we’re really putting the work in to help our offense out this year.” Porras, who led the team with 28 tackles in the first two games, says it’s the bond they’ve developed as a defense and a team in general that gives the Dragons an edge. Their strength also stems from a drive to be their best on every play. “One of the things we like to say is, ‘It’s your team against our family,’” Porras says. “I don’t think there’s anything stronger than this brotherhood we have here. On defense, in every single position, we’ve got playmakers that hustle to the ball. Your guys might be bigger than us, faster than us and stronger than us, but we outhustle you on every single play. Nobody will ever beat us in that.” Sweat and effort in the trenches is the norm for the defensive line, and Carroll’s young group must continue to push themselves and develop as the season progresses. Winning the battle at the line could be a key to the Dragons’ defense transitioning from an unproven unit lined with question marks to one of consistency and power. Led by junior and captain Travis Keener (13 tackles in the first two games), the D-line is working to establish itself. The development of a strong pass rush and keeping opponents’ running game in check could provide extra relief to Carroll’s pass coverage and linebacking corps. But the Dragons’ biggest step in overcoming the challenges of a young and inexperienced defense, Dodge says, is their ability to work together as a unit from front to back. “On the defensive side of the ball, we’ve got to communicate. That’s the biggest thing when you’re young,” Dodge says. “We don’t necessarily have any bell cows on that side of the ball yet. They’re trying to find their voice. So we need guys that are going to communicate on defense. “When defenses don’t communicate, it’s usually bad news. We need to do a great job communicating, but we’ve got guys that are capable of doing that, and we just need to keep practicing that. That’s going to be a big key for us this year.” DRAGONPRIDE
