LEADING OFF

festive and family- oriented S TA F F & C O N T R I B U T O R S

That’s a nice way to describe the holidays in Flower Mound, Texas. Homes and businesses illuminated with colorful displays just as wide-eyed children radiate the true meaning of the season. The nation has noticed. According to more than one reputable source, Flower Mound consistently ranks among cities with the most extraordinary levels of investment in the spirit of the season. Let’s just say most of us really buy into holiday decorating! To do our part to get us all in the mood again this year, our staff writer, Maleesa Johnson, spoke with not one but two Flower Mound families who are shining beacons of holiday lighting. Harrison and Valerie Ward turned a hobby into one of the best-lit homes on the block. Each year for nearly a decade, they would set their home aglow with as many as 75 thousand lights choreographed to their favorite carols. Now with three small children of their own, the displays have even more meaning. And for Mark and Bree Neal, they’ve turned holiday lighting into a thriving family business. As the owners and operators of Silent Lights, LLC the Neal’s deliver holiday cheer one roofline at a time. Another Flower Mounder whose holiday spirit has been nothing short of contagious is Jan Balekian. The long-time resident wanted to create something festive and family-oriented, so she started Flower Mound Christmas Trees. Today, she and her staff help area families pick out the perfect tree and create hot-cocoa infused holiday memories along the way. And as the year comes to an end, we also take a look at some interesting trends from 2017. Have you tried charcoal ice cream? I can only hope you don’t get any of it in your stocking this year!

After winning two Golden Globes (including Best Television Series-Drama) and more than a handful of Emmy Awards, The Crown is back for a second season. The Netflix-original drama follows the life Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the 1940s and onward. This show has everything you could ask for in a period piece: elegant costumes, royal intrigues, political rivalries and, of course, romance. The show picks up after chronicling the Queen's marriage to Prince Philip (Matt Smith) in 1947 up to Princess Margaret’s (Vanessa Kirby) dissolved betrothal in 1955. We would normally give spoiler alerts, but everything actually happened decades ago. That said, the second season reportedly covers the royal family from 1957-1964, meaning we should be gaining two new characters, Princes Andrew (born 1960) and Edward (1964).

n recent years, Flower Mound has continually topped chart after chart. Safest Cities, Best Small Cities to Raise Families, Most Successful Cities… the lists, quite literally, go on. All of these studies point to one central theme: Flower Mound is not a bad place to be. We have a feeling Saint Nick might agree, because among all of the charts, the Town repeatedly lands in the top 20 U.S. cities with highest Christmas budgets. In fact, Flower Mound ranked No. 2 on that list in 2015, according to WalletHub. To clarify, the annual study by WalletHub, a personal finance website, measures an approximated budget, not actual dollars spent. That said, have you driven through Flower Mound neighborhoods at Christmas? It’s go big or go home with exterior décor, almost rendering streetlights irrelevant.

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 28TH YEAR OF FLOWER MOUND’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE

14 • DEC 17

fmStyleMagazine.com

For the skeptics out there– also referred to as “grinches” this time of year – we’ll delve into the data a bit more. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, the anticipated personal holiday spending level in 2016 was the second highest in the survey’s then-13-year history, with the average per-person tab expected to reach $935.58, up from $805.65 in 2015. Yes, you read that correctly– per person. Now, in 2017, that tab is even higher, with an expected per-person national average of $967 This year, Flower Mound’s Christmas budget ranked No. 16 in the nation at $1,825 per person. That put the town at No. 4 in the state. To determine cities with the largest holiday budgets, researchers compared 570 cities across the nation. Some may translate the study to simply state that Flower Mound is ranked among the top cities with disposable income. But anyone who has ever seen the lighted floats drifting down from Spinks to Gerault knows the truth: Flower Mound just really loves Christmas. And, of course, while Christmas budgets aren’t entirely spent on décor, there are some homes that could make the Grinch’s heart grow three sizes from lights alone. Some use exterior lights as a means of entertainment. For others, it’s their job. No matter the method or motive of decking the halls, Flower Mound goes above and beyond. THE AMERICAN DREAMERS For one family in Flower Mound, Christmas décor is more than festive aesthetics– it’s a means of achieving a dream. This Christmas marks the third holiday season since Mark and Bree Neal began running a Christmas light installation company, Silent Lights. In that time, they have seen an incredible influx of customers. Silent Lights started out as a side business to accompany 1-2-Tree, a residential tree service that has served Flower Mound for 20 years. Bree’s father founded both companies, but Mark bought Silent Lights from him about two years ago. "My dad had it as kind of a way to keep his staff busy during the winter months,” Bree says. “He was doing okay with it, but he wasn't able to dedicate as much time to it. The first year that we owned it, we more than doubled what he was making off of it just because we were able to focus on it. This year we're looking at increasing almost 25 percent off of last year." Silent Lights practically defines convenience. Mark goes to potential clients’ houses or businesses and provides an estimate. From there, lights are put up, maintained and promptly taken down at the culmination of the holidays. The lights are owned and stored by Silent Lights, so clients never have to worry about getting up in an attic and untangling dusty strands of mismatched lights. If a bulb goes out, Silent Lights will fix it in no time. In fact, Mark once went out on Christmas Eve to do maintenance for a client. Meanwhile, Bree is helping run the business from an administrative standpoint while also taking care of a toddler and baby. The Neals have a two-and-a-half year old and welcomed another member to their family three months ago. Throw in two family businesses and you can imagine how full their schedules are. Bree’s fm STYLE Magazine

secret to making it all work: "I'm pretty flexible and I have raised my toddler to be flexible as much as she can,” she says. The Christmas light company only operates about three months out of the year. However, those three months are lucrative enough to almost match what Mark makes in a year with 1-2-Tree. Bree credits the business’ success to the market it is in. “Me and my husband talk all the time about how this business couldn’t work everywhere as easily as it does for us in Flower Mound,” she says. Remember how the 2016’s Christmas budget in Flower Mound was projected as $1,825? Take that number, double it and you’ll still fall short of one of Silent Light’s most expensive home installations. Like we said, Flower Mound residents don’t shy away from an opportunity to be festive. And with anxious clients emailing the Neals as early as October, it can equate to a lot of work. But Bree and her husband would both tell you it’s worth it. “For my husband, coming from a very poor background, seeing him be able to comfortably get what he wants makes me really happy,” Bree says. “He was able to work and build something that's really successful and we can get things for our daughters. I know it makes him feel like a good dad, even though he would be a good dad without it." "It feels like the American dream." THE DIY-ERS For another young family, Christmas lights provided an outlet of socialization, self-expression and a bit of school pride. Harrison and Valerie Ward’s yard at 2117 Gisbourne Drive was Flower Mound-famous for almost a decade. They recently moved to another home in Flower Mound, and are already sorely missed by neighbors and lightlookers. And while they are not putting up a massive, musical light display at their new home this year, Valerie has hinted that the lights will be back once the Ward family is all settled in. "We've been very very proud to be a part so many people's traditions throughout the years,” she says. “To me, it's a little bit sad that we won't be able to provide that this year, but it is what it is." When the Wards were young newlyweds, Valerie and Harrison were discussing worklife balance. Harrison was working 50-60 hours a week and, in short, basically needed a hobby. He has been a huge fan of over-the-top Christmas decor his entire life, so the idea of going big for the holidays hit him naturally. It was not so natural for Valerie. 16 • DEC 17

WE WENT FROM ONE YEAR OF HAVING AN INFLATABLE BLOW-UP IN THE FRONT YARD TO NEXT YEAR HAVING THOUSANDS OF LIGHTS

- VALERIE WARD

"He was like 'I have always wanted to do a giant Christmas light display,’” she explains. “I asked him, 'Are you serious? Like, the Griswolds?' and he said 'Yes!'" Valerie admits that she, too, has always loved decorating for the holidays, but tends to focus more on the interior of the house. However, she jumped in with both feet and joined Harrison in what would eventually become a Christmas tradition for many Flower Mound residents. "We went from one year of having an inflatable blow-up in the front yard to next year having thousands of lights,” Valerie says. "We were very lucky that we had some friends and neighbors who came over and volunteered to help us put this together and they didn't think we were totally insane." For many onlookers, the light show is a pleasant few minutes of flashy fun. But for the Wards, it is hundreds of hours of effort. In fact, the first year the lights went up, Harrison took a full week off from work. “That was before we had kids,” Valerie laughs. fm STYLE Magazine

Harrison estimates that the light display incorporates 75 thousand lights. Every portion of lights that blinks requires its own programmable channel, and Valerie says they used 128 channels. Extension cords are run across the yard and plugged into computerized boards. Before lights can even go up, though, a substantial amount of work is put in to “choreograph” the lights. They used songs such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas,” and added in some alma mater pride with the Texas Tech fight song. “For me to choreograph one minute of lights takes me about 10 hours behind the computer,” Valerie says. “So for a 10-15 minute show, that's 100 hours plus of me sitting there behind a computer trying to get everything sequenced just right.” The process has gotten easier over the years, according to Valerie, but it is clearly still a substantial undertaking. And, three members have been added to the family since the Wards first started the light show. Harrison and Valerie now have children, ages 7, 5 and 4. For the kids, a light show is all they have ever known at Christmas. “They are kind of devastated that we aren’t doing it this year,” Valerie says. The kids aren’t the only ones that are a bit disappointed. Local churches used to drive groups of kids to see the show. Flower Mound residents would travel across town with visiting relatives in tow. Valerie says she has gotten Facebook messages and even post cards from people she didn’t know, raving about the display. It will be missed, but according to Valerie, the display is not over. So stay tuned for next year, because the Wards are still in Flower Mound, and the show will go on. "For us it's been worth it to bring a little extra joy to people during this time of year,” she says. DEC 17 • 17

FMHS VIOLIST TO APPEAR ON NATIONAL RADIO PROGRAM Flower Mound High School orchestra member and senior violist Yong-Ha Jung represented his school on the nationally syndicated radio program From the Top. Jung traveled to Boston, Mass. for the recording of From the Top. The show was at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall on Oct. 1, and is set to air on NPR Jan. 1, 2018. “Being selected for From the Top is considered to be among the greatest honors for a high school student musician, and we are extremely proud for him representing all of our students on this stage,” FMHS Head Orchestra Director Stephen Clink said in a press release from Lewisville ISD. The show had a live audience, and Jung says was his most memorable music experience thus far. From the Top is an independent nonprofit organization that aims to recognize and celebrate young classically-trained musicians. For more information, visit From the Top’s website. FLOWER MOUND NAMED IN TOP 10 ‘MOST SUCCESSFUL’ TEXAS CITIES If you hadn’t noticed, October has been a really good month for Flower Mound. USA Today named the Town the No. 13 most livable city in the United States, NerdWallet ranked Flower Mound as the No. 7 best city to raise a small family, and now this. The Town is the No. 9 “Most Successful City in Texas” according to a study by Zippia. Researchers at Zippia, a career advancement website, used the American Community Survey results for 2010-2014 to compare 340 cities in Texas. All of these cities had a population above 5,000. The Zippia study compared data on poverty levels, median household incomes and unemployment rates. With Flower Mound’s statistics revealing a 2.9 poverty level, a 4.3 percent unemployment rate and a median household income of $121,549, the Town earned a place in the top 10, at No. 9. West University earned the No. 1 spot, followed by Trophy Club, Bellaire, Fair Oaks Ranch, Highland Village, Melissa, Helotes, Colleyville and, of course, Flower Mound.

CALLOWAY’S NURSERY DONATES A PORTION OF POINSETTIA SALES TO LENA POPE It’s that time of year when poinsettias make their festive appearance. This holiday season, Calloway’s Nursery again supported local nonprofit Lena Pope through its annual poinsettia sale. From November 1 through November 24, a portion of proceeds from the presales of poinsettias went to Lena Pope, a nonprofit that provides counseling and education services to assist more than 20,000 people in need each year. “Calloway’s is proud to have the opportunity to support Lena Pope and help those who utilize their valuable resources,” said Calloway’s Nursery CEO, Marce Ward, via press release. “We are a locally owned company, so community is one of our core values.” Last year, Calloway’s Nursery raised more than $30,000 for Lena Pope to support the nonprofit’s mission to create hope, happiness and success for children and families. This longtime partnership allows Calloway’s Nursery to directly and positively impact communities around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where the company is based. For each poinsettia sold, 10 percent was donated to Lena Pope.

LOCAL VETERANS HONORED THROUGH MULTIPLE COMMUNITY EVENTS Both Lewisville ISD schools and the Town of Flower Mound held multiple events to honor the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. military. On the Friday before Veterans Day, schools across the Town welcomed local veterans to their ceremonies. The Town hosted its annual ceremony and picnic on the Sunday prior to that. This event featured a picnic and a Veterans Review, where approximately 200 local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and ROTC units parade before the attending veterans in uniform. The always-popular Veterans Day Relay Run returned for a fourth year. Relay participants ran approximately one to two mile sections, commemorating our nation’s veterans and their service by carrying the American flag. This year, all proceeds went to support the Veterans Collaborative of North Texas, a nonprofit organization which helps veterans and their families obtain affordable housing in Denton County. FLOWER MOUND EARNS NO. 2 RANK IN STATE FOR ‘BEST PLACE FOR YOUNG FAMILIES’ Only topped by Murphy, Flower Mound earned the No. 2 place in the state of Texas for “Best Place for Young Families,” as according to Nerd Wallet. NerdWallet, the same site that named the Town the No. 7 best small city to raise a family, is a personal finance site. The study aimed to find the places that offer the best combination of affordability, quality schools, future growth and prosperity and family-friendliness. Flower Mound was listed at No. 2, with 44 percent of households having families with young kids. The Town had the third-highest median home value ($280,300) of the places listed in the top 10, but the high-scoring schools were enough to balance out the affordability factor. The schools ranked sixth in Nerd Wallet’s analysis, with a SchoolDigger score of 93.59. Additionally, from 1999-2015, Flower Mound’s average family income increased by 37 percent, according to the study.

T

hanksgiving has come and gone, and we now collectively brace ourselves for the next half of the holiday season. December’s holidays tend to be the heavyweight champions of entertaining. And while Thanksgiving seems to center on feasting, Christmas and its fellow winter holidays seem to focus more on family time – or so Hallmark leads us to believe. Regardless, thanks to schools granting extended winter breaks to students, December marks a time of travel for many. Those who aren’t traveling are often on the receiving end, welcoming family and friends into their home for more than an overnight stay. People in the latter circumstance hospitably throw fresh linens on the guest bed and dust a room that remains largely overlooked for the remainder of the year. Yes, it’s time to update those guest bedrooms, and here is where to start. KEEP IT COMFORTABLE Even more so than other bedrooms in the house, the guest bedroom is largely used for sleeping. While your kids may use their rooms to play and hang out, guest bedrooms are rarely used for anything other than getting some shut-eye. This makes the bed the most important part of the room. That probably comes as no surprise. And yet, how many times have you been a guest and slept on a lumpy, old mattress? We’re not

saying your guest bedroom needs a California king Tempur-Pedic. Just make sure guests don’t leave with cricks in their backs, wishing they had brought an air mattress. Secondly, make sure the room is comfortable in the sense that it actually feels like home. Skimping on wall décor is noticeable, and can have guests feeling like you stuck them in a storage room. Add a vanity so guests can do their makeup when others are in the bathroom. Put a few succulents or flowers in there to prove that life can and does exist in the spare room. Ask yourself, “Is this somewhere I would like to spend time?” If the answer is “yes,” mission accomplished. PLAY WITH PATTERNS If you find that your guest bedroom is rarely slept in, use the vacancy as an opportunity. Here is a space that is normally neither seen nor heard, so feel free to get loud – with colors and patterns, that is. Think of all of those boundaries you wanted to push with master bedroom décor. Your spouse may have talked you down, but the guest bedroom is fair game. And that’s perfect, because funky wallpaper is back in! If you want to keep the walls tame and neutral (understandable), play up the bedding. Tasteful pops of color will transform a guest bedroom from a sterile, chain hotel look-alike to a chic space that will leave a lasting impression on friends and family. We would advise you to choose only one of the two options at a time. Loud walls and bold bedding could give your guests a headache.

eave it to the Bishop Arts District to take the craft brewery craze and make it craftier. The city-folk founders and cider enthusiasts Joel and Laura Malone don’t have a bachelor’s in brewing, but they do have Internet access. After launching a successful Kickstarter campaign and fishing through mounds of bureaucratic red tape, the daring duo hunted the web and gathered apples and other exciting fixings to add to their recipes. In 2014, Bishop Cider Co. (BCC) emerged as Dallas’ first cidery bringing fresh ingredients, fresh thinking and a little beginner’s luck to the craft cider world. Those who think ciders are only super dry and tart are in for a tasty treat. Of course, BCC has their own version of the standard,

which they call High & Dry. This crisp and potent (6.8% ABV) cider brings forth plenty of pucker-inducing tannins that will make your lips smack. However, the not-so-standard yet equally popular Suicider (6.5% ABV) has a precarious mixture of spices that speaks to the founder’s spirited attitude. Here, the familiar holiday flavors of cinnamon, allspice and clove combine for a playful nod to the little chemist in all of us—or as they put it, “A tasty mess.” The Malone’s definitely tapped into the right market, and within a year BCC outgrew its original cidery. The former Bishop Avenue location has since been resurrected into a small yet noble tasting room for their creative concoctions. Upon walking in, a long

wooden bar calls your name. We suggest you belly up and order a flight of the latest potions available while a friendly bartender walks you through the history of cider making. Did you know cider was a thing before Prohibition? Now you do. Thankfully, Prohibition is no more, and today local cider fans can enjoy a myriad of hard ciders like BCC’s Crackberry, a cranberry-blackberry infusion or Cat Scratch Fever, which incorporates jalapeños (and an 8.5% ABV) to bring a bit of heat to your sweet. Six days a week (the tasting room is closed Mondays), patrons can relax at one of several small tables or fill a growler to go. The Malone’s didn’t stop at the first sweet taste of success. To meet the increasing demand for craft ciders, the couple expanded into a larger production facility in the Dallas Design District. It was in this space that Joel chose to portion off a few thousand square feet to turn into an arcade. Yes, that’s right. The Malone’s took a space the size of your average suburban home, added a rotating gallery of arcade classics and dubbed it as the Cidercade! Thanks to the backing of a family arcade game collector, the Cidercade boasts a wide variety of popular titles like Guitar Hero and well-worn classics like Frogger and Asteroids to keep even the biggest gamer happy. Want some fight with your pint? Order up a Schilling Mischeif Maker (fruit-forward cranberry and pomegranate, 6% ABV) and challenge a friend to a game of Mortal Kombat over in Figher’s Row. Just beware; on Thursday nights the Cidercade invites serious gamers to take part in regular tournaments with prize pools in the thousands of dollars. Those looking for a more classic buzz are advised to tap their inner Gene Simmons at the KISS pinball machine. Pair it with some dry-hopped Bishop Galaxy (citrus and passionfruit cider, 10% ABV) and you’ll Rock N Roll All Night! Whatever your flavor, the Cidercade is bound to have something for you with two dozen specialty ciders on the menu. Leave the quarters at home because from noon until midnight (and 1am on Friday and Saturday) a modest $10 admission fee will have you playing all the games to your heart’s content. The Malone’s may take their cider seriously, but at their tasting room and Cidercade, the overall vibe is laid-back with a nod to your sweettoothed, joystick-navigating inner child. The next time you’re in Dallas, consider leveling-up for a fun night out with Bishop Cider Co.

Fa La La Latte Paradise Bistro Offers Soul-Warming Drinks and the Perfect Diversion for Holiday Guests

PARADISE BISTRO & COFFEE CO. 2451 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 100 Flower Mound 972.874.7256

While the nearby plaza features trees that are lit year-round, there is just something about Christmastime that makes sipping on hot cocoa or a peppermint latte feel special. Paradise Bistro & Coffee Co. in Lakeside DFW is perhaps best known for its succulent, “modern” grilled cheese sandwich, but don’t let that stop you from adding a delicious hot drink to your order. As it finally starts feeling a little like winter, Paradise Bistro is the perfect place to get cozy and share some quality time over specialty coffee drinks. One things that makes Paradise Bistro a haven for latte lovers is the rotating selection. For example, in October, the quaint café offered “Almond Joy,” “Snickerdoodle,” “Mint Chocolate Chip,” “Cinnamon Brown Sugar” and, of course, “Pumpkin Pie” specialty coffees. Each flavor could be transformed into a latte for only $1 extra charge. As Christmas approaches, keep your eye on the specials board. And, as any coffee shop lover would quickly tell you, atmosphere is almost as important as caffeine. Paradise Bistro takes you back in time with vintage ceiling tiles. Hanging down from them are Edisonbulb style chandeliers. Sometimes, a tranquil Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby song will play lightly as old souls sigh with delight. The lighting is soft and warm at night, and bright and light during the day, thanks to large windows that wrap around the bistro. And of course, the development it sits in offers ample seasonal vibes with Christmas lights and even a 30-foot Christmas tree. So if the weather is nice, grab your latte to go and take a stroll around Lakeside. What better way to give out-of-town guests a Christmassy night out and free yourself from another round of cooking?

Living La Vida Lakeside Mena’s Tex Mex Grill Adds Some Spice to the Rapidly Developing Lakeside DFW

MENA’S TEX MEX GRILL 2334-2374 Lakeside Parkway 214.285.9900 MenasTexMexGrill.com

Considering that this location of Mena's Tex Mex Grill is one of three, we would say third time is the charm. But, we hear that the other two – one in Richardson and one in Carrollton – are also delicious. All that to say: enchilada lovers will not leave here disappointed. Speaking of enchiladas, don’t miss the Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas. Owner Pablo Mena cites those among his favorite menu items. Picking favorites is no easy feat, however. The menu, created by Mena’s brother, Louis Mena, goes on for days. The lunch menu is impressive on its own, with plenty of combinations and specials for all ranges of appetites. The average lunch item is priced at around $8, so you don’t have to feel bad about splurging on the Flautitas de Pollo– an appetizer item of chicken flautas, served with guacamole and sour cream. The dinner menu offers specialties such as the Chipolte Brisket Tacos, which are listed as “muy caliente” and served with rice, salad, bean soup, avocado slices and “salsa atomica.” You don’t have to be a linguist to infer that those tacos are not for the faint of heart or tastebud. Never fear! You can happily assuage a burning tongue with any one of the eight flavors of margaritas made fresh at the bar. Perhaps the most tantalizing dishes can be found nestled next to the dessert protion of the menu. The Chef’s Specials add exciting twists to traditional Tex-Mex items. For example, you may have had your fair share of chile rellenos, but we’re willing to bet you’ve never had anything quite to scale as

Mena’s Roasted Seafood Relleno. A roasted poblano pepper is stuffed with shrimp, crabs and scallops, topped with a creamy sauce and served with rice and beans. Need we say more? When it comes to the actual dining experience, Mena’s offers a casual, yet elevated vibe from your average Tex Mex joint. The décor looks modern and the lighting is dim, with plenty of natural light flooding in. The patio is the largest of all the Mena’s locations and features welcoming orange umbrellas. The surrounding Lakeside DFW development gives a metropolitan feel, making it seem like you drove a lot further than you actually did. And while the third location has already proved to be a fast success, Mena says he isn’t looking to expand anytime soon. "If things are fun to do, I will do them,” he says. “Right now, this is fun. Thinking about a fourth location...that's not so fun right now.

OWNER OF LOCAL CHRISTMAS TREE FARM KEEPS THINGS FESTIVE FOR FLOWER MOUND FAMILIES

A

nyone who has experienced the magic of the Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch knows that the owner, Jan Balekian, doesn’t do things halfway. In December, the same field that served as a temporary home for hundreds of pumpkins transforms into a forest of firs. Cartoon cutouts and bounce houses appear, as do the delighted smiles of children enraptured by the sheer volume of festive diversions. Hot chocolate is on hand, because even though highs could be in the 80s, it’s still Christmas time. Balekian shares how she started and continues to run Flower Mound Christmas Trees in her front yard.

I MOVED TO FLOWER MOUND… in 1975. There were 1,260 people when I moved here. We had one grocery store where Big Lots is now. That used to be Tom Thumb. I've seen some major changes. I know progress is upon us and there's nothing you can do about it. Everyone wants to live in Flower Mound because it's such a neat little area. But I do remember the old days when you could ride the horses through the trees and all the trails. It's kind of sad in the way that you lose a lot of that heritage. I STARTED FLOWER MOUND CHRISTMAS TREES BECAUSE… I wanted to start something a little more festive and family-oriented than just picking up a tree from a lot. I just decided one year to do it and brought in a few trees. It just grew and grew like the pumpkin patch. On the weekends when most of the families come in, we have our staff out in the field helping them. They are educated really well on every type of tree that we have. Where it comes from, how to take care of it, the qualities that may affect allergies and so on. Our staff is very knowledgeable and has worked here about eight to 10 years. WHEN IT COMES TO PICKING OUT THE PERFECT TREE… There is no such thing. It's just a matter of picking something that you like. When you buy Fraser [Firs] out of North Carolina, most of them are grown up on a hill. You'll get more branches on the side that the sun hits. If you have a corner of the house that you want to put it in, you just have to place the fuller side of the tree facing out. There is nothing perfect. We just find the tree that people love altogether as a family. THE MOST SURPRISING DISCOVERY IN STARTING THE FARM WAS… The price of getting them here. Our trees that are Nordmann [Firs] and Noble [Firs] – what I call the more expensive type of tree – they come from

out on the West Coast, up in Oregon and Washington. A lot of those places have to cut their trees early because of the snow. If they wait too long in the season, they have to use helicopters to get trees out. And that gets expensive. The expense of getting them here and taking care of them has really been eye opening. We have very few that go bad on us because we immediately put them in water. AFTER CHRISTMAS IS OVER… We don't have a whole lot leftover. What we do have in the way of small trees, we will take them and donate them to Christian Community Action. The smalls ones are easier for people to handle. Even just a five-foot tree makes the difference in a home. Nothing goes to waste. WHEN OUR CUSTOMERS COME IN, WE… try to figure out what they are looking for. What type of tree and what budget. We will have a tree that will fit every price-point. Some of them may not be as full as others, but we also buy what they call second-choice trees that may fit that need for someone that may not have the space or the money. When families come in here and pick a tree, we give them the option of taking the tree as it is. We'll give it a fresh cut, wrap it in plastic and tie it to the top of the cars for them. Of course, my guys use cardboard to lay the tree down. So once you pick a tree, you don't have to do anything until you get home and unload it. If you don't have a stand, we build a stand. So many of the people that buy from us say that this is the way to go. I’M DRIVEN BY… My love for kids. I love doing it. I dread the day I have to quit. As long as I can continue to do this, I will. I have nine grandkids. They are always coming out here. My two oldest granddaughters will come out and work the tent for the pumpkin patch or come out and serve hot chocolate for the Christmas Tree Farm. Just working with people and different personalities is a good learning experience.

2017 TRENDS THAT TAKE THE SHAKE WHAT DO GOATS, CHARCOAL AND UNICORNS HAVE IN COMMON? EVERYONE WENT CRAZY FOR THEM THIS YEAR. by maleesa johnson

A

s we slip into the last month of 2017 with a sigh, be it one of relief or exhaustion, we take time to reflect on a year’s worth of bizarre trends. Please note: any use of the words “weird,” “bizarre” or “eccentric” does not constitute a negative reaction. Some things are just strange, and that’s okay! Oddities are what keep the world going ‘round. And while 2017 was full of odd trends (i.e. RompHims, rompers for men), we are limiting the list to a few things that made landfall in or around the Metroplex.

But the downward dogs and warrior poses didn’t end with goats. Earlier this fall, canines were thrown into the meditative mix at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas. The cherry on top? The dogs were adoptable. Not long after, cat yoga was being scheduled at the SPCA of Texas. This is not to be confused with kitten yoga, which is hosted by 3Tree Yoga in Fort Worth. The concept is the same, though: Walk in, practice yoga, try not to adopt every adorable fluff ball, repeat. We’re excited to see what animals get mat time in 2018.

A ZOO’S-WORTH OF ANIMAL YOGA Remember how we said weird does not mean bad? It definitely applies here, although the many varieties of animal yoga may have hit the point of “too much of a good thing.” It started with cute, viral videos of baby goats climbing on yogi’s backs. (It should come as no surprise that the true origin of the practice stems from Portland, Oregon.) Then, almost overnight, it hit Dallas. Yoga enthusiasts, goat lovers and curious onlookers rejoiced as Deep Ellum Yoga brought the supposedly relaxing practice to the Metroplex. Goat Yoga Richardson soon followed suit. Even closer to home, the Nash Farm in Grapevine offered multiple goat yoga sessions this summer. We haven’t had the chance to try it, but we have heard multiple accounts that it is more distracting than relaxing. However, everyone seems to leave with a smile, so mission accomplished.

THE CONTINUED ’90S COMEBACK The re-emergence of chokers began hitting it big in 2016, but managed to live on to 2017. And while a good pair of jeans will never go out of style, we all know denim plus ’90s equals more than just jeans. That’s right, denim jackets are back! In October, Winstar World Casino hosted an “I love the 90s” event that featured Salt-N-Pepa and Vanilla Ice. You couldn’t ask for better proof of a ’90s revival. But in case you do, we hear the scrunchy is slated to make a comeback FANTASY FRAPPUCCINOS Although it feels like forever ago, the Unicorn Frappuccino-pocalypse, “Frappocalypse” for short, hit this year. In April, grown adults swarmed their local Starbucks for a caloric drink that ran baristas ragged. A grande boasted 410 calories and 59 grams of sugar, but that was not enough to deter the masses from trying the limited edition beverage. Much like charcoal ice cream, this drink became a star for

DEC 17 • 49

its aesthetic value. Whether the taste lived up to hype, the marketing strategy clearly worked. The fantasy-themed Frappuccino trend returned in October–just in time for Halloween. From October 26-31, Starbucks offered the “Zombie Frappuccino.” Not to be outdone by its predecessor, this sweet grande had a calorie count of 430. But that’s what cheat days are for, right? OVERSIZED, OVERLOADED MILKSHAKES Despite the ever-present pressure to join in on juice fasts, clean eating and the newest fad diet, calories still managed to trend this year. (Don’t they always?) Decadent, gargantuan milkshakes popped up everywhere we looked. Perhaps this had something to do with Google search history, but please don’t judge. This is not to say that enormous milkshakes are a new thing. They’ve been around a while. But for some reason, this year really gave them time to shine. Creme de la Cookie in Dallas is evidence of the trend’s ability to bring in customers. This summer, the bakery introduced “Freakshakes,” topped with multiple cookies, cake balls, sprinkles and any sweet treat you can think of. Recent reviews of Creme de la Cookie are centered on the shakes, with reviewers hailing from Fort Worth to Mansfield to all over the Metroplex. That’s right; milkshakes alone are causing North Texans to hit the highways. CHARCOAL EVERYTHING Charcoal hit the beauty and hygiene department first. Videos of black toothpaste ensuring white teeth went viral. Then, the stuff that Santa leaves in the stockings of naughty kids became a hot commodity. Body scrubs, soaps, shampoos… you name it, you can find it made with charcoal. The charcoal facial masks went relatively viral on their own. You know, the kinds that basically rip your face off if you try to peel it off? People may have lost an eyebrow or two, but their pores are clear! But, as many “cure-all” ingredients do (looking at you, coconut oil), charcoal made its way into our food. Activated charcoal, which is known for being a potent detoxifier, started appearing in lemonades and, yes, ice cream. Arguably, the purpose of charcoal in ice cream was more for aesthetics than detoxification. The black ice cream proved a hit on Instagram, and Chills360 in Dallas hopped on the bandwagon in May. The dark treat was only available for a limited time, but Sweet Daze Dessert Bar in Richardson picked up where Chills360 left off. Anytime a touted, reportedly healthy ingredient has a banner year, we find ourselves asking, “Is this actually good for me?” We aren’t licensed to make that call, but consider this a friendly reminder to research before indulging in the latest trend.
