I hardly ever include this on my résumé, but years ago in a chamber of commerce golf tournament, I won a set of tires for coming closest to the pin on my tee shot on a par-3. Suffice it to say, my golf game has never been as noteworthy since then—mostly because, after having kids, I no longer found time to play. But this month, I interviewed golf pros (and a pro golfer, page 50) who have inspired me to get out and try the game again. I love being outdoors and, since the average golfer walks anywhere from three to six miles a round, that sounds like a win! Whether you hit the greens regularly or only putt at courses equipped with a windmill, you’ll find plenty of enthusiastic teachers around town who love to help golfers improve their games—from the most novice among us to touring professionals. Get to know them better in our feature “Golf Gurus” on page 12. Another accomplishment (shockingly) not even on my LinkedIn profile is being voted runner-up for best dressed and most likely to succeed my senior year of high school. I know. I’m tempted to look the winners up on Facebook and compare notes. These traditional high school nominations came to mind when we interviewed our four Tastemakers, featured starting on page 26. You can’t help but be inspired by, and in awe of, these local citizens who are hard at work making Flower Mound a better place to live—and who look great while doing so. Two local retailers—Hello Daffodil women's boutique and Jack’s Outfitters— graciously dressed our Tastemakers in the latest spring fashions. See if you recognize the places around town we chose for the photo shoots. Also in this issue are great places to eat (page 36), drink (page 38) and have fun (page 53) in and around the Metroplex. And be sure to check out our website: fmStyleMagazine.com. We always have more content to share with you than will fit between the covers of our monthly issue. You won’t want to miss a thing!

CHANGE OF SEASONS: A MEMOIR JOHN OATES, CHRIS EPTING APRIL 4

A Musician and His Guitar Every musician has a story, and John Oates of Hall & Oates shares his in “Change of Seasons.” A memoir of his life before and after he collaborated with Daryl Hall, the book chronicles Oates’ life from childhood to meeting up with Hall in the 1960s to the present. Hall & Oates rose to fame with more than 60 million records sold worldwide and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Based on the handwritten journals he kept throughout his musical career, “Change of Seasons” gives Oates the opportunity to tell his story, which is more than just being on the other end of an ampersand.

All in the Family THE CIRCLE IN THEATERS APRIL 28

Not So Clear Intentions Although relevant to today’s work culture that questions whether or not releasing your social media passwords to potential employers is a good idea, “The Circle” is actually based on a 2013 novel by David Eggers. As Mae, played by Emma Watson (Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”), climbs the not-so-typical corporate ladder of the world’s largest tech and social media company, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), The Circle’s founder, tries to convince her that living a life of complete transparency is the way to go. But should we expect the people we work with to know everything about us? The flick is sure to evoke social commentary on privacy in today’s world.

Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan, “Undateable Live”) plays a 30-something producer at “The Breakdown,” a national cable news show shot in New Jersey. As she begins to question where her career is headed, Katie’s mother, Carol, also takes stock of her life spent as a stay-at-home mom for 30 years. Carol (Andrea Martin, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) decides a change is in order and accepts an internship at Katie’s news program. Having an overbearing mother to deal with during the holidays is one thing. However, dealing with such a mom at work can be quite a different experience. Adam Campbell (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Horatio Sanz (“Saturday Night Live”) and Nicole Richie (“The Simple Life”) also star in this new network comedy.

wo years ago, Emily Isaacson’s connection with golf consisted of occasional trips to the driving range with her grandfather. “We’d wager on our putts,” she recalls. Outside of those spontaneous outings, she rarely touched a club. Today the Marcus High School junior is a member of the varsity golf team with her sights set on playing college golf. Her best round this year? A sweet 79.

GET INTO THE SWING OF THE GAME WITH HELP FROM A PRO

But Isaacson didn’t shave strokes off her game on her own. In addition to learning from her high school coaches, 14 months ago Isaacson began taking lessons from Becca Bailey, director of the junior academy and head instructor at Hank Haney Golf Ranch at Vista Ridge—and a Marcus High School alum. “I’ve learned how to hit the golf ball in different conditions, not just hit the ball,” Isaacson says. Bailey is one of over a dozen golf instructors at Hank Haney Vista Ridge. The facility’s namesake has instructed more than 200 PGA tour pros including Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods. Instructors cater to beginners—youth and adult—as well as professional golfers and every level in between.

FIND A PRO IN THE KNOW Some instructors, like Bailey, are trained via a specific method developed by an individual. All Hank Haney-certified instructors offer a consistent teaching style. “Here you will get a lesson very similar to if you were working directly with Hank,” Bailey says. “We make a swing diagnosis based on how the body moves, the shape of the swing, the flight of the ball and then teach from there.” Under the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) umbrella, you’ll find professional golfers (who play tournaments for a living) and golf professionals (who teach the game for a living). “With any new sport or skill, look for a qualified instructor so you can learn more quickly,” says Gwen Checho, education manager with the LPGA in Daytona Beach, Florida. “Finding someone who understands learning styles and basic education fundamentals will increase your enjoyment of the game.” Robert Singletary, head PGA golf professional at Grapevine Golf Course, has two other teaching pros on staff. “We are well-trained and well-qualified,” he says. “Teaching is our passion.” Similar to an accountant becoming a CPA or a lawyer passing the bar exam, PGA and LPGA professionals must complete training and undergo recertification to stay current in the game. Checho says your first lesson might not even start with a swing but may address basic golf etiquette. “How do I play on a course? How do I approach others in my group? How do I keep up with a group?” she says. And consider learning with a friend or your spouse. “Group instruction comes with a lower price point than private and allows for a basic introduction, plus can introduce you to others who are interested in learning and play at your skill level.” fm STYLE Magazine

GET GOLF READY To familiarize players to the game, both the PGA and LPGA have sanctioned Get Golf Ready, affordable small-group lessons, typically taught in a package of four or five 90-minute classes, designed to remove the intimidation factor from the sport. Started by Cathy Harbin, PGA master professional, Get Golf Ready instruction can be found locally at Grapevine Golf Course, Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound and Lake Park Golf Club in Lewisville. With Get Golf Ready, players learn golf basics, allowing the most novice player to feel more comfortable on the course. “Golf can be intimidating to a lot of folks,” says Singletary. “The game can appear to be difficult, expensive, time consuming and intimidating. We find that, especially with women, golf can feel like a man’s game but it’s not.” The gender boundaries have essentially disappeared at Bridlewood Golf Club. Kirk Dillen, director of instruction and head PGA golf professional, says his course is evenly occupied by men and women—from tee times to class enrollment. “We often see people who played at one point in their lives pick the game back up again, or those with physical limitations—like bad knees—being able to enjoy golf,” he says. “It’s a game anyone can play all their life.” APR 17 • 13

“No one is too much of a novice to benefit from lessons,” echoes Bailey. “Small group or private lessons take away the stigma that other people are watching and can be a very rewarding experience.” But it’s not an easy game to learn. Or as Arnold Palmer once intoned: “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect.” Consider this: For the average person, the club head travels about nine feet on an arc in two directions to come into contact in an area that’s about one-eighth of an inch square—the sweet spot. “The mechanics of golf are complex,” says Dillen, “but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game. I’ve taught professional athletes who struggle with golf, but you can learn the game at any point in your life, especially if you have good hand-eye coordination—and a good teacher.”

A SPORT FOR THE AGELESS If Singletary could wave a magic nine-iron, he’d have parents introduce their kids to the game of golf at an early age. “At least make time for a summer golf camp so kids can learn the skills needed to play a round with their parents or grandparents,” he says. Other initiatives designed to remove barriers from golf include Tee It Forward and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, which specializes in providing a “girlfriendly” environment for juniors ages six to 17. Courses participating in Tee It Forward encourage golfers to play their tee shots forward, which speeds up play, reduces lost balls and makes the game more fun for the novice. Girls Golf is “the fastest growing segment of players under 18,” according to Checho. The PGA Junior League Golf program gets kids excited about the game in a manner similar to Little League. At Grapevine Golf Club, teams play for two months against other area teams on local courses. “The kids get uniforms with numbers on them and hats, just like a baseball team,” Singletary says. “They have a ton of fun with each other.” Other venues for kids are summer camps, taught at nearly every area golf course, and yearround junior academies, geared for kids ages eight to 16. “They learn how to make a tee time, drive a cart, order a beverage from the cart,” says Singletary, “but our first goal is safety. We teach them where to stand so they don’t hurt each other.” 14 • APR 17

Becca Bailey works with Chelsea Romas on her swing.

“NO ONE IS TOO MUCH OF A NOVICE TO BENEFIT FROM LESSONS” — Becca Bailey | Golf Instructor

At Bridlewood Golf Club, middle school students can play golf as a substitute for their PE class, and junior academy instruction begins at age six. Hank Haney Junior Golf summer camps introduce students as young as five who have never touched a club to the sport or help those who play on their school’s team to better hone their games. “Golf keeps you active and outdoors—two things we all struggle with,” Bailey says. “It’s also a sport you can do socially or enjoy on your own. There’s so much easy access to the game, especially here in Texas with so many courses you can play.” Isaacson definitely sees herself playing golf beyond her high school and college careers. “My dad is always telling me I’ll be able to beat the guys in the business world,” she says. fmStyleMagazine.com

THE MOUND BURNS FOR A VERY GOOD REASON Flower Mound’s namesake and most significant landmark was under attack. Invasive plants began choking out native wildflowers and prairie grasses. The best remedy? A controlled burn. With the blessing of The Mound Foundation, Flower Mound Fire Department coordinated a burn of the southern-most section of the mound last month, affording native plants the ability to grow unencumbered by weeds. The burn will also help reduce the risk of wildfires.

STUDENTS DONATE PB&J TO LOCAL FOOD CENTER Each Thanksgiving, members of Liberty Christian’s National Honor Society help others in the community by hosting an annual canned food drive at school. This year, they wanted to take it a step further by also helping the Denton Community Food Center at a non-holiday time when donations are not as high. “Because peanut butter and jelly is a staple in many households, we wanted to hold our first-ever peanut butter and jelly drive at school to reach out and help the community,” says Ruthie Quam, junior English teacher and NHS sponsor. Liberty students—from preschool to high school—brought jars of peanut butter and jelly to school, allowing NHS members to deliver more than 1,335 pounds of product to the food center. Situated on two acres overlooking Lake Grapevine, the project consists of a 16-story, Mediterranean-styled condominium tower totaling approximately 226,000 square feet of living area; a threestory, 76,000-square-foot enclosed parking garage; and four 3,000-square-foot bungalows on the perimeter of the building. For owner/developer Real Capital Solutions and Realty Capital Management, this is the culmination of over two years of planning. “Our buyers have been patiently waiting for construction of the Tower to go vertical, so this is an exciting time for all of us,” says Leslie Bardo, senior vice president of Realty Capital Management. “We are 60 percent pre-sold and very busy at the sales center every day with interested buyers stopping in.” Substantial construction completion of The Lakeside Tower is expected in July 2018. Additional information about The Lakeside Tower is available at LakesideTowerTX.com.

BOND REFERENDUM

Chances are, if you relocated to the Flower Mound area and have school-aged children, the award-winning Lewisville Independent School District weighed heavily into your house-buying decision. Annually, our district receives numerous academic accolades and fine arts honors, wins athletic championships and scholastic competitions. In order for the district to continue to experience a high level of success, funds must be made available for building improvements and expansions, upgrading technology and other expenditures. The last bond election passed in 2008. Schools in our area fall under the umbrella of the Lewisville Independent School District— an entity comprised of 13 municipalities including Argyle, Carrollton, Coppell, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Frisco, Grapevine, Highland Village, Hebron, Lewisville, Plano and The Colony, covering 127 square miles and serving more than 53,000 students at over 70 campuses and support locations. PRESENTING THE PROPOSAL For this year’s bond, an 80-person committee— comprised of parents, grandparents, educators and community leaders—partnered with the LISD Board of Trustees to determine the needs of our schools. For six months, the committee worked with LISD staff to analyze data, study growth patterns and review suggestions for line items such as new construction, improvements and technology before assembling a $737.5 million bond package. Priorities were reached after campus tours, research and input from a diverse sampling of citizens within the district.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION $71.5 MILLION A new career and technical center will help provide job skills and certifications so students are better prepared to enter college or the workforce after high school. Currently, students are placed on waiting lists for existing career and technical centers in the district. 5. ATHLETICS | $45.1 MILLION Existing press boxes will be replaced, Life Cycle athletic items purchased and high school ancillary buildings and practice fields addressed. 6. FINE ARTS | $38.2 MILLION Planned are renovations and additions to middle and high school music programs, black box theater additions and Life Cycle fine arts items. 7. ANGIE COX When she moved to Flower Mound in 1995, Angie Cox was determined to get involved in her community, and it didn’t take her long to dive right in. Named Citizen of the Year in 2008 by the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce, Cox has served on several local nonprofit boards. Today, she is serving her second term on the Lewisville Independent School District Board of Trustees (Place 3). “Being on the LISD Board of Trustees is a way to continue to give back to an incredible district,” says the mother of four. Cox is also on the Women of Flower Mound Board of Directors. The nonprofit group, which welcomes women of all ages, is an enjoyable way to get involved in the community and make new friends. “Part of the Women of Flower Mound’s mission is fundraising to provide scholarships for Flower Mound graduating seniors,” Cox says. “Proceeds from our annual fashion show and other volunteer activities enable us to provide these scholarships.” As a champion for children, one of Angie’s recent fundraising activities was serving as cochair for Journey to Dream’s gala held last October. Journey to Dream’s youth home, Kyle’s Place, provides emergency shelter and 24-hour care for teens ages 13 to 18. Offering services specifically for unaccompanied youth, Kyle’s Place is the only youth shelter and the first of its kind in Denton County. “It may shock you, but there are more than 2,000 unaccompanied youth in Denton County,” Cox says. “They are not in foster care. They are living in apartments or with multiple families where they bounce from one family to the next. Kyle’s Place offers shelter and various services, helping at-risk kids work towards self-sufficiency and a positive wellbeing.” For Cox, making Flower Mound a better place for children has become her life’s calling. “Every community benefits from service, even if you only have a couple of hours to give,” she says. “It’s easy to get involved when you find something you’re passionate about.”

ANDY EADS Instead of dreaming about becoming a policeman or an astronaut as a boy, Andy Eads wanted to be a city manager. “My dad was a fireman for 32 years,” says Eads, a native Texan and fifth generation resident of Denton County. “I hung out at the fire station when I was young and started to get an understanding of city budgets and how cities work. It fascinated me.” Eads worked in local government a few years after completing a Masters of Public Administration, then changed direction for a while. “A light bulb went on when I turned 30. Realizing I didn’t have to work for a city to be involved—that I could do so through volunteering—I decided to sell real estate.” Eventually, Eads longed to return to local government. Elected on his first try, serving as Denton County Commissioner is his destiny. “It’s a privilege to work on projects—infrastructure, expanding the court system, improving roadways—that will help today and build a legacy for the future,” Eads says. “I also enjoy helping people navigate through all the volunteer opportunities available in our community, to find the right fit for them.” To say Eads is vested in his community is an understatement. He serves or has served as Denton County’s Representative to the Regional Transportation Council; board president of the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation; president of Denton County Housing Finance Corporation; board of directors and chairman emeritus of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce; member Denton County Historical Commission and chairman of its Museums Committee; Denton County Master Plan committee member; and trustee of The Mound Foundation in Flower Mound. And this is just a partial list of his community activities. As a Rotarian, Andy was president of Flower Mound Rotary and founding president of Cross Timbers Rotary Club. “We recently added our 100th member, and I admit I get choked up thinking about it,” he says. “We’re realizing our vision.” Andy also makes time for what’s most important in his life—family. “I don’t let civic involvement get in the way of raising my children,” he says. “In the future, I’d love to work on a venture with my wife and boys. Combing my two passions would be a dream come true.”

LORI ROGERS WALKER Serving the greater good runs in Lori Rogers Walker’s blood. Her parents, both educators, have backgrounds in community service. Walker followed in their footsteps. Her first job out of college was in politics. “I went to Washington, D.C., for the summer and stayed for 10 years,” says Walker, a native Texan. Ultimately, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff/Director of Scheduling for Congressman and Majority Whip Tom DeLay. In 1995, she decided it was time to “go home” and moved back to Texas with her husband and their young son. Once the family got settled in Flower Mound, Walker soon was active in “almost every board and organization in the community.” After serving as PTA president and working as chief administrator for Denton County Commissioner Andy Eads, the opportunity to become president of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce arose. She was thrilled to step up to the helm. “I had been a cheerleader for the community for a long time,” says Walker. “I now feel like I’m head cheerleader!” As chamber president, Walker finds it particularly rewarding to welcome new businesses into the community and then help them grow and thrive. “Collectively, we have a stronger voice, and there’s a vested interest in helping all community businesses be successful,” Walker says. She loves when business owners stop by the chamber to have a cup of coffee and talk shop. “We listen as well as brainstorm ideas and solutions,” she says. “Paying it forward gives you an even greater sense of belonging and community.” In addition to her work with the chamber, Lori was also instrumental in founding the Cross Timbers Rotary Club. “It’s a good feeling to know you’ve birthed something that will outlast you,” she says. Walker shares her favorite quote, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which embodies her conviction: “The purpose in life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

CHUCK ELSEY Throughout his career, Chuck Elsey has pursued excellence and sought to forge long-lasting relationships. Before establishing a private law practice in Flower Mound with his son Chad, he was an entrepreneur in the oil and gas industry as well as a senior executive, serving in leadership capacities. He also spent years as a business consultant, working locally and internationally with small businesses, mid-tier and Fortune 500 companies. While his current and past business pursuits are noteworthy, Elsey says one of the most important contributions he can make is serving his community and giving back. “The rewards come in many ways, and the connections you make are especially fulfilling,” says Elsey, who prefers calling or meeting in person instead of texting. Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce 2013 Citizen of the Year, Elsey has also been honored multiple times as both Best Business Lawyer and Best Oil and Gas Lawyer, while his firm has been designated Best Law Firm on seven occasions. He serves as legal counsel to the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce and as a member of its executive committee and board. A prior Chairman of the Governing Board of Directors for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Flower Mound, Elsey was recently appointed to the hospital’s Board of Managers. He is also vice president of development for the Lewisville Education Foundation Board of Directors, where he has served for six years. He will co-chair the LISD bond election committee, supporting a $737 million bond referendum to be voted on in May. A past member of the Flower Mound Rotary Board of Directors, Elsey is co-founder and board member of the Cross Timbers Rotary Club, the fastest growing Rotary in America (2015-2016). “Service Above Self,” the club’s motto, echoes his philosophy. “The Cross Timbers’ membership is diverse. We pool our resources and contribute a variety of talents to help serve and give back to the local community,” he says. True to his convictions, Chuck continues to lead by example and inspires participation and leadership in others.

long day calls for a little relaxation. Whether you’ve had a rough day at the office, in the garden or keeping up with kiddos, the Double Rattan Hanging Chair from Serena and Lily provides just the place to shed your stresses. We’re completely hung up on this hanging chair that’s inspired by a Scandinavian design from the 1960s. Constructed from stylish and durable rattan, it’s perfect for enjoying a summer breeze or lounging, swaying and hanging out anywhere you please. Equipped with industrial-strength rope, this seat can be installed indoors or on a sheltered porch. Wherever you put it, though, it’ll be the ultimate hot seat—we recommend calling dibs. We also suggest calling a professional to assist with the installation; it needs to be anchored properly to avoid damaging your ceiling.

As the name suggests, the Double Rattan Hanging Chair can accommodate two in a cozy scooped seat. Shimmy in with your sweetie and watch the kids frolic in the yard or catch your favorite TV show from your living room. Have a spectacular pool or golf course view from your bedroom? Hang it there. If the view is overwhelming, just take a nap. You can relax comfortably knowing that a heavy-duty loop and rope ensures this chair is extra sturdy. It scores high in the looks department, too. Crisp white trim provides a timeless, elegant look, or you can add a pop of personality (and comfort) with colorful pillows or cushions. Either way, this is destined to be the signature piece on your porch or in your home. It’ll also get you in the good graces of your stylish friends. Jonathan Adler, the world-renowned designer, once said that every house should have a hanging chair. The next time you want to unwind or just hang out for a bit, kick back in the Double Rattan Hanging Chair. Once you’re in, you won’t want to get out. And that’s perfectly okay. Close your eyes, sway back and forth, and relish the relaxing moment. You’ll quickly get the hang of it.

(Almost) Everything Under the Sea WATER GRILL’S SEAFOOD-FOCUSED MENU MAKES A SPLASH IN UPTOWN

he landlocked expanse of Dallas-Fort Worth doesn’t exactly scream seafood destination. But lack of a nearby ocean hasn’t stopped Water Grill in Uptown Dallas from making waves in the local culinary scene. The Texas offshoot of the California-based restaurant chain has fresh fish flown in daily and features a rotating menu of crab, lobster, sea urchin and 13 varieties of fish. Throw in handcrafted cocktails and an upscale nautical vibe, and Water Grill might just be your new favorite way to get your omega 3s. When it comes to the seafood that Executive Chef Kyle Rowan will use in his kitchen, only the finest fish will do. “We’re committed to delivering one of the best seafood experiences our guests have ever had,” he says. “Our devotion to superior

quality seafood and freshness is of the highest standard.” Seafood seekers with discerning tastes will appreciate the effort that goes into the menu at Water Grill. It starts with topnotch seafood—fish, oysters, crustaceans and more—flown to Love Field by the restaurant’s private distribution company. Chef Rowan’s inspiration begins when he sees the day’s fresh catch arrive straight off the plane each morning. “It’s hard not to be inspired when you have the best seafood from the East, West and Gulf Coasts coming right to you,” he says. The chef’s current favorite? Spot prawns flown in from Santa Barbara, California. “They’re easily one of the hardest menu items to find in Dallas,” he adds.

fmStyleMagazine.com

LOCALFLAVOR review The menu at Water Grill constantly changes to adapt to in-season seafood, making it all the more exciting to trek to Dallas for a meal; every visit offers a different bounty from the sea. Patrons who regularly visit the restaurant have come to love the Wild Ross Sea Chilean Sea Bass (cauliflower purée, lemon chutney, hazelnuts and brown butter). The New England Lobster Roll, which guests can order regular or Connecticut-style (served warm and tossed with butter), is also a popular menu item. We happen to like our lobster hot and buttered, but if you prefer your lobster with mayo, Water Grill can masterfully prepare both versions. If you’re in the mood for oysters, grab a spot at the raw bar, which boasts an enticing selection of as many as 15 oyster varieties. Just be prepared to splurge— the oysters are about three bucks apiece. You can also savor chilled clams and scallops as well as iced shellfish platters perfect for sharing. Water Grill’s bar is also worth noting. It features 20 locally brewed beers on tap, 35 wines by the glass and handcrafted cocktails incorporating regional ingredients. The muddled blueberries and fresh lemon in your Beauregard? Locally sourced. On the dessert front, Water Grill delights with many luscious options such as Coconut Panna Cotta (with passion fruit chile syrup and sesame seed tuile) and Maple Cheesecake (served with sour cream ice cream). The sweet standout, though, is the Pot De Crème. This dense yet buoyant treat has a profound chocolate flavor thanks to chocolate crème, sorbet, biscotti and cocoa nibs. As for the atmosphere, the 7,500-square-foot restaurant is kind of like a sophisticated subterranean lair, but with views of the Uptown skyline. With sumptuous leather booths and an outdoor patio with a fire pit, the entire space is relaxing and comfortable with plenty of nautical details, right down to seawater tanks that display live shellfish. Chef Cowan’s personal favorite area of the restaurant is the patio. “It’s by far one of the coolest things about the space,” he says. “We made the roof entirely retractable because it was designed with the unpredictable Texas weather in mind. You can catch some sun in the spring and, when rainstorms catch us off guard, we can pull out the roof. Best of both worlds.” While the space is effortlessly easygoing, make no mistake—Water Grill is a high-end seafood destination. It’s ideal for a special night out or a business lunch to impress clients. And if you’re looking to host a private event, a 500-bottle working wine cellar makes a unique, intimate venue for up to 16 guests. The next time you a crave a meal of proteins caught from the sea, head to Big D and drop your line for king crabs, scallops and nearly whatever fish hooks you.

Italian Food with a Little Pizzazz It’s what’s on the menu at Pazzo! WoodFired Pizza

PAZZO! WOODFIRED PIZZA 6101 Long Prairie Road Flower Mound 972.355.9886 MyPazzo.com

fm STYLE Magazine

Pazzo! WoodFired Pizza has been a Flower Mound mainstay for years, but recently a new owner stepped in to liven up the entrées, freshen up the salads and sweeten up the dessert menu. The restaurant is still family owned and as cozy as ever, but we bet you’ll find the changes here fantastico! Freddy Feratovic and his father loved the idea of improving an established restaurant rather than start from scratch, and felt the existing location (near Target and the intersection of Long Prairie and FM407) was ideal. “There are very few locally owned restaurants in this area,” Feratovic says. “With this opportunity, we will bring quality food, great service and a different experience to our customers.” Along with menu mainstays—appetizers, fresh salads, paninis, pizza and desserts—you’ll find creative fusions, such as lasagna pizza, and more variety including housemade manicotti, ravioli and chicken parmesana ready to perk up your palate. End your meal on a sweet note with a slice of New York-style cheesecake, tiramisu or cannoli. As warmer temps roll into town, be sure to order the sorbetto di limone—or lemon sorbet, if that’s easier. If you are accustomed to ordering a glass of wine with dinner, that’s changed. Pazzo! is now BYOB, so you can bring your favorite bottle of wine with you and the wait staff will gladly uncork it for you. Glasses are provided as well—or a straw, if that’s more your style. What’s not changed is the authentic open Renato copper oven that Pazzo! uses to bake its pizzas, paninis and pasta dishes until they’re just-so. And the friendly, cozy environment you just can’t find at every pizza joint is even warmer than before. “People enjoy our restaurant because it is the closest you can get to Italy without traveling overseas,” Feratovic says. “With our woodfired oven, authentic recipes, patio seating and friendly staff, we create an experience to be remembered.” Every dish is made in-house and each pizza is handcrafted when ordered and then rotated in the oven until baked to perfection. Is your mouth watering yet? Then head to Pazzo! WoodFired Pizza for lunch or dinner, seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Because the Feratovic family believes Italian food is best experienced with good friends and straight from the oven, Pazzo! does not deliver, but does offer catering services and reservations. We’ve seen groups—from soccer teams to book clubs—sharing good food and friendship. What will you experience on your next visit?

crash course in interior design. It’s an ever-evolving world of colors and styles and, when one fad goes out, another one comes in. To find what’s in now, look to the experts. We asked a few designminded professionals for their pointers on creating a fashionable, comfortable home bursting with unique style and personality.

LESSON NO. 1:

LET YOUR LIFESTYLE GUIDE YOUR HOME DÉCOR No matter how many inspiring ideas you discover on Pinterest or Houzz, if they don’t mesh with your lifestyle and passions, they don’t belong in your home. “Your family has to be able to live in your home,” says Carol Jones, a local advisor with Engel & Völkers. “It has to be comfy and cozy. Home is a space to create, laugh, live, rest and love.” Jones recently remodeled her home to better reflect her personal style, which she calls “comfortable but with a little bit of edge and luxe.” Her renovation revamped her home’s kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms in what Jones says was an eightweek labor of love that was absolutely worth it. “Your home is where you have meals, laugh and share with your family,” she says. “Take the time to make your home unique for you

and your people.” Her favorite room? The master bathroom. “I love the clean white marble and the chain-link chandelier,” she says. “And of course the tub! I’m a bath girl.” Jones discovered a freestanding stainless steel tub online that was both beautiful and functional. Many tubs of this type offer great looks but are too narrow to be enjoyed comfortably. So for Jones, this bathroom find fit the bill perfectly. The mom of three, who relishes a relaxing bath, now has her own sophisticated space with touches that speak to her personal style. REFRESH YOUR STYLE SEASONALLY Just as you wouldn’t wear fur-lined boots in July, you should also adjust your home’s style to fit the season. Christine Blythe with Décor to Your Door says it’s quite simple to transition from one season to the next. “Just buy classic furniture pieces and seasonally change up the look with pillows and accessories,” she says. For an instant refresh this spring, look for décor in cream, pink and light blue, whether it’s a throw blanket for your couch or a decorative vase for an end table. Not only is this décor a nice seasonal update, but it’s in line with the general interior design trends in Flower Mound. “Many people are transitioning out of Old World design that had a lot of heaviness to it,” says Blythe. “They are trading it for lighter, airier palettes. Touches of blue—many different shades of it—are usually the client’s choice for a pop of color.”

fm STYLE Magazine

Mary Joseph of Interior Solutions by Mary has also seen a movement toward light and airy colors, as evidenced by Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, Greenery. “I’ve used this color for years by weaving it into accent pieces,” she says. “It evokes happy feelings and brings a lot of positive energy to the space.”

03:

AIM FOR TIMELESS OVER TRENDY Whether you want to make some simple updates to your home or you’re doing some major renovations, the pros agree: There’s no need to take a sweeping approach to all the latest fads. It’s best to opt for a classic style instead of ultra-modern. Elizabeth Huffman with Black Door Home Co. advises picking timeless items and adding trendy touches—such as curtains and pillows—that can easily be switched out as seasons and fads change. “Timeless items don’t scream trend, and that feel is definitely coming back,” she says. “Think Southern Living. People want pretty homes.” APR 17 • 43

Huffman embraces the timeless design element in her home and through the name of her business. Less than enthused with her home’s builder-grade interior doors, Huffman wanted a more personal, unique feel. So she painted her doors black, giving them a clean and classic look that will endure interior design trends that come and go. Some other design ideas with timeless appeal? Huffman likes ceiling treatments as well as painted porches, both of which she has incorporated into her own home.

04:

MAKE SMALL CHANGES FOR A POWERFUL IMPACT Don’t think you need to overhaul your entire home to get it looking its best. Even a few small tweaks will yield a noticeable improvement. Blythe says a fresh coat of paint is the best way to reinvigorate your home’s style. “It’s one of the least-expensive options that gives the most impact,” she says. And don’t just take a paintbrush to the walls—Joseph suggests painting kitchen cabinetry for an instant refresh. “There’s a big trend toward bringing color to kitchen cabinets,” she says, “and not just white and cream. I’ve done two-tone cabinets with gray and cream.”

05:

TAKE A CUE FROM THE CATWALK The next time you’re meandering around The Shops at Highland Village or browsing your favorite boutiques, pay attention to what you see in store windows—what’s hot in the fashion world translates to interior design. “Home trends definitely follow runway trends,” says Jones. “Ralph Lauren speaks to it with pink, navy and gray. Tom Ford is all about pink and cream, dark brown and black.” In her home, Jones particularly loves Sherwin Williams’ Black Fox, an off-black shade with warm chocolate undertones. While Jones says neutrals

such as beige, gray and cream will always be en vogue, bold colors—think vibrant jewel tones and bright pops of pink—are having a major moment in interior design. Runway trends extend beyond color, though. Just consider models and fashion designers such as Cindy Crawford and Kate Spade who have launched fabric and furniture lines. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen interior design follow runway trends more and more,” notes Blythe. That’s not to say you need to stay up to date on fashion blogs or jet off to New York Fashion Week. Just do what Huffman does—aim for your home to be a reflection of your own personal style. Rather than weave in haute couture, Huffman likes her home to feel like “a great pair of jeans but dressed up with a necklace and cool heels. “It’s not necessarily runway, but style in general,” she continues. “I like a comfortable but beautiful look—very Anthropologie. I want people to feel at home and relaxed.” DON’T OVERLOOK THE DETAILS When you think interior design, the big items such as furniture and flooring might come to mind, but it’s the small touches that make all the difference. “Design is in the details,” says Jones. “I see hardware and lighting as jewelry for the home. It separates you from your neighbor.” Blythe has noticed a wave of metallics, distressed woods and satin golds—and her team welcomes the many inspiring options. “It actually makes our day more fun and interesting as each project becomes a new challenge,” she says. Huffman’s personal favorite is gold hardware— from faucets and knobs to cabinet pulls and light fixtures. “To me, it’s like, where does it stop? I love it everywhere,” she says. Whether you adore brass fixtures or hot-pink stripes on your ceiling, if you love it, go for it. “Visualize what you want in your space,” says Huffman, “and don’t be afraid to do it.”

eorgia has more than just peaches up its sleeve. Take a jaunt to Savannah and you’ll see that the Peach State is brimming with Southern charm. Travel to the Southeastern coast for beautiful parks, breathtaking architecture and plenty of food, music and fun. It doesn’t matter what you see or do in this historical city, you’re never far from a Savannah favorite.

Make Yourself Comfortable Inns, cottages and bed-and-breakfast destinations prevail among many other accommodations in Savannah. It is not unusual to find these types of lodgings at the top of many best-places-to-stay lists. While it may be easy to find one in the historic garden district of the city (throw a stone and you’ll hit one or two),

Azalea Inn & Villas in Forsyth Park captures Savannah’s greatest attribute—its Southern hospitality. As Georgia’s first city, Savannah’s second greatest attribute lies in the historical architectural elements the early colonies were known for. Standing on the front steps of the buildings that comprise Azalea’s Inn & Villas, guests will immediately notice much of the original architecture remains unchanged. Choose from either guest rooms at the inn or a villa. The guest rooms offer the amenities of a traditional bed and breakfast, while the villas are meant to be vacation rentals. Be sure to check out the onsite restaurant with “reinvented Southern cuisine,” according to innkeeper, Teresa Jacobson. AzaleaInn.com If all-inclusive is more your cup of sweet tea, the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa is located on the waterfront of the coastal city and has everything you’ve come to expect from such a resort—deluxe suites, a fitness studio, secluded beach access and a spa. Make Like a Tourist There’s more to explore in Savannah than just the historic district. Even land lovers will get a kick out of a Savannah River cruise. Reminiscent of the good old days, the paddle-wheel riverboats of the River Street Riverboat Company offer a variety of cruises made for sightseeing and dinning. From the 600-passenger Georgia Queen to the 1,000-passenger New Georgia Queen, these traditional red, white and blue boats can be reserved by small and large groups—or just a simple booking for two. Enjoy cruises specifically for sightseeing, dinner entertainment, special luncheon trips, Sunday brunches, Monday night gospel entertainment, beautiful sunsets or moonlight entertainment. Dining locations onboard include indoor and al fresco options. SavannahRiverboat.com While you’re in Georgia, hop over to Tybee Island just 20 minutes away from Savannah. Whether you’re in the mood to explore land or sea, it’s the ultimate destination for a day trip. Enjoy a picnic on the sandy shores or spend the day strolling the historic squares, sampling confections from local bakeries and sweet shops. Don’t forget your swim gear—you can also explore the breathtaking coastal waterways via paddleboards, kayaks and jet skis. VisitTybee.com

Savor a Taste of the South Secret recipes, famous soda shop jerks and a whole lotta ice cream put Leopold’s Ice Cream on Savannah’s map nearly one century ago. Three Grecian brothers—the Leopolds—traveled to America in 1919 to learn the art of candy and dessert making from an uncle already in the United States. What happened next was pure confection magic. Leopold’s Ice Cream opened shop in downtown Savannah and serves its famous ice cream to sweet-toothed locals and visitors alike. Of course you’ll find traditional favorites such as chocolate, pistachio and sorbets behind the counter, but Leopold’s is also known for creating the original Tutti Frutti flavor. But sweets aren’t the only delights on the menu; the eatery also serves up a selection of sandwiches, salads and soups. LeopoldsIceCream.com While Cotton & Rye is considered fine dining, the restaurant was designed to be welcoming and unpretentious. Serving dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the eatery’s fare includes American favorites such as fried chicken, hamburgers, mac and cheese and grits to name a few. But with ingredients indigenous to Savannah, the moderately priced starters, greens, main courses and desserts boast the classical flavors of the South. Pair all this with live music playing in the background and you’ve got another Savannah favorite. Reservations are recommended. CottonAndRye.com

FORMER PGA TOUR PLAYER, ENTREPRENEUR AND FAMILY MAN FINDS FLOWER MOUND THE PERFECT PLACE TO BE

W

hen Paul Stankowski stepped away from the PGA Tour in August 2013, he’d been an entrepreneur on the side for about eight months. His company, Francis Edward, allows customers to custom design belts and accessories from the finest exotic skins and Italian leathers. Sold primarily at golf pro shops, Francis Edward products feature a range of boldly colored skins (plus black, brown and white) that can be finished in custom stitching and edges. This venture keeps Stankowski, a husband and father to two Flower Mound High School students, busy as he plots his return to golf via the PGA Tour Champions in 2020.

THE INSPIRATION FOR MY GOLF CAREER WAS: Calvin Peete. My dad and older brother played golf and, for as long as I can remember, golf was always on TV. When I was 10 or 11 years old, Dad took me to the Los Angeles Open at Riviera Country Club, and we walked with Calvin Peete. He was so dapper and wore shiny shoes. I knew right then and there that I wanted to play professional golf. THE IDEA FOR FRANCIS EDWARD CAME FROM: realizing that most guys have a black and brown belt—and if they golf, a white one—but the same guys who like crazy socks, bold ties and pocket squares might also like more creative options for their leather goods. I wanted our products to be sold exclusively through golf venues to benefit the PGA pros. I’VE BEEN SURPRISED BY: the crazy color combinations people come up with. We see a lot of people pay tribute to their favorite college teams, but we had one guy design a belt to match his Ferrari and another match the seats of his McLaren. WE DECIDED TO LIVE IN FLOWER MOUND BECAUSE: it made travel easier. My wife, Regina, and I moved here from El Paso in 1996. I always flew through Dallas on the tour and we had friends here, so it made sense to live in Flower Mound. The town has changed a lot in 20 years, but the schools are great and we’re plugged into an awesome church. We love it here.

fm STYLE Magazine

THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN MY LIFE CAME AT: the NCAA Championship in 1988 when PGA Tour and U.S. Open winner Scott Simpson shared his testimony. He talked about his relationship with the Lord in a way I’d never heard before. God worked on my heart and I put my faith in Him my third year in college. Funny thing is, I didn’t like Simpson because he beat my idol Tom Watson in the U.S. Open in 1987. I told him that years later on the tour. He’s a part of my life’s story, and I still stay in touch with him. ONE OF MY BEST MEMORIES: is how I met my wife. I was at church with a buddy of mine during my last week of college [University of Texas at El Paso] in 1991. The church was putting on a musical for the graduating seniors. I saw this girl in the choir and asked my buddy about her. Before I even met her, I told him, “She’s mine.” I got the courage to ask her out and we were married in 1993. We ended up staying in El Paso until 1996 and have been married for 24 years. GOLF FOR ME TODAY IS ABOUT: getting back in shape. After I left the tour, I gained 20 pounds and had a heart attack. I had to have a stent procedure. Last November, I got back in the gym and lost the weight. I do a lot of cardio and eat better. My son, Joshua, plays on the high school team, so we get out and play. I always dreamed of being a dad and all that comes along with being a father, but I wanted my kids to do their own thing. [Daughter Katelyn dances.] But when Joshua was 12, he decided he wanted to play golf. It’s fun for me that he likes the game. A PERFECT DAY FOR ME IS SPENT: at home with my family. After spending 20 years on the road, home is a great place to be.

Shady Living

T

exans welcome warmer temps and budding blooms, but give us a few weeks and we’ll start complaining about the heat, sun, mosquitoes and pollen. Sure, we love to spend time outdoors—especially if we’re poolside with a refreshing beverage—but too much sunshine (and the resulting heat) makes us a little cranky. That’s when shade structures become our salvation—a place of refuge from the Texas sun. STRUCTURED COVERS Unlike an enclosed patio, a pergola’s opensided design and absence of a solid roof won’t shield you from rain or strong winds, but it helps define your outdoor space without confining it. When evening breezes begin to blow, you’ll enjoy the reprieve. Typically built from decay-resistant treated cedar, pergolas can be stained or left to weather a natural gray. Roofs are often constructed with crossbeams, slats or adorned with latticework. Aside from supporting posts, you can opt for built-in seating, planters, railings or any other accessories as your space and budget allow.

shaded passageways. Vines were encouraged to climb upon the structure, further aiding the natural cooling system and enhancing its appearance. Today’s well-planned pergolas often feature plants growing up the posts and even over the roof. In our area, a hardy variety of climbing vines will soften the hard edges of your pergola, provide more shade and add a touch of color and fragrance. Consider Carolina jessamine, clematis, hyacinth bean vine, Confederate Star jasmine, honeysuckle or wisteria, to name a few, but keep in mind bloomers may also attract bees. Certain perennials—such as wisteria—can add a significant amount of weight to your structure and make it difficult to restain the wood as it weathers. Unless you have woodworking experience and a slick set of power tools, hire a pro to build your pergola. It might seem like a simple structure, but like most DIY projects, this one can be more work than you expect. No reason to sweat when summer isn’t even here yet!

GO AU NATURALE Perhaps the most appealing accompaniment to your outdoor structure is the addition of natural elements. The earliest Renaissance gardens featured the forerunner to pergolas—pliable limbs bound together, woven with long slats and then arched to make
