get your ducks in a row This month, my youngest starts high school, so I need to pause for a moment and let that sink in. It’s a surreal moment. In only three short years, she’ll be a senior, which is kind of a big deal. So much so, that, for the second time, we asked Flower Mound and Marcus High Schools to each select three seniors who stand out among their peers. Meet our Six Seniors to Watch from the Class of 2018 in this issue. With classes starting in a matter of days, back-to-school shopping is in full force as parents desperately try to get that fancy mechanical pencil that we all know will get lost after two days. If you planned ahead and purchased a wrap pack, we have some ideas for items to supplement the basics in Shop in Style. And don’t forget to take advantage of Texas’ tax-free weekend, August 11-13, especially for those bigger ticket purchases. Now that you have a few weeks left in your summer and want to make the most of every single minute, you have choices: local or large-scale local? If you have time for a quick road trip, check out Boarding Pass to look into some Texas beaches worth visiting before summer is over. It might be months before you can even think about vacationing again. If you don’t have enough time for out-of-town travel, our Arts & Culture department has a plethora of fun things to do around the Metroplex. Cheer on the Cowboys as they kick off their season or rock out to Foreigner at the Starplex Pavilion. Not local enough? Attend the 30th annual Highland Village Hot Air Balloon Festival. It’s the perfect summer send-off! So, get your baby ducks lined up and prepare to nudge them out of the nest. It’s back to school they go!

SOUTHLAKE ST YLE ’S SECOND ANNUAL

FLOURISHING IN THE FACE OF FAILURE SAVE THE DATE: October 13, 2017 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Marq Southlake | Catered by Scratch Kitchen Merrilee Kick has worked the red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival as a magazine editor, anchored the drive-time newscasts for CBS Radio and operated a marketing company producing hundreds of voice-over spots for television—all before becoming a teacher at Plano West High School. While grading papers one afternoon Kick had an idea that literally drove her to drink. Her idea to build a better beverage in a ball has caught on, so much so that she now calls the shots as the president of Carrollton-based BuzzBallz and Southern Champion LLC, the $20 million premium wine and spirits companies she founded in 2009. Join Southlake Style in the follow-up to its first successful luncheon and be inspired by Kick, an Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning Woman of 2016, and her message that the difference between failure and luck is found in the amount of effort applied to learning from your mistakes.

Marvel-ous Adventure Series Marvel Comics’ “The Defenders” is an upcoming series set to be released by Netflix that is part of the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows the adventures of Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones). The fearless quartet of singular heroes share one common goal—to save New York City. This is the exciting, action-packed tale of four solitary figures, burdened by their own personal challenges, who come to realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

WICKED LIKE A WILDFLOWER LANA POPOVIC AUGUST 15 Darkly Delicious Twin sisters Iris and Malina have a secret. All the women in the family have magical powers to manipulate beauty. Their mother, however, does not allow Iris and Malina to share their magic with anyone; above all, they are forbidden to fall in love. When their mother is inexplicably attacked, the twins unearth the truth behind the quiet life she created and has so fiercely protected for them. They discover the wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find the very magic that bonds them together or could it tear them apart?

THE GLASS CASTLE IN THEATERS AUGUST 11

Glass Half-Full “The Glass Castle” is a long-awaited Lionsgate film based on Jeannette Walls’ best-selling memoir about her impoverished father’s dream to one day build his children a home. The movie opens with Walls’ dysfunctional and radically nonconformist parents (Naomi Watts, Woody Harrelson, Academy Award nominees) having moved to New York to be near her; Academy Award-winner Brie Larson plays Walls as an adult. Her free-spirited, alcoholic father and eccentric, artistic mother mean well, but their descent into her new life was not part of her well-orchestrated—if not obsessively sterile—plan to distance herself from the chaos of her nomadic childhood. Max Greenfield (“New Girl”) plays Walls’ husband, David.

As the Class of 2018 prepares for its final year of high school,

13

Hayden Reeder Marcus High School MILITARY HISTORY BUFF AND STUDENT LEADER This summer, family vacations to Alabama and Colorado were planned around Hayden Reeder’s attending RYLA, a Rotary leadership camp at Texas Women’s University and other commitments. Hayden was nominated for RYLA by his school counselors and was selected to attend after an interview. As a cadet first lieutenant with Marcus’ AFJROTC (Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps), Hayden has found his family away from home. “It has taught me a lot about discipline and leading others,” he says. He’s also a part of Marcus Crew—those daring, flag-bearing young men who run up and down the football field when their team scores. A four-time Magnificent Marauder award winner, Hayden has been recognized by his teachers for his dedication, effort, participation and teamwork in the classroom. He spent nine days in Italy and Greece last summer on a school trip with his world geography class. And he counts his experience with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a national college prep program, as integral to preparing him to be a leader. His newest pursuit is training at Warrior Makers Combatives, a martial arts school in Plano. “I’ve just started, but plan to continue throughout my senior year,” Hayden says. He’s also looking forward to football season, taking four history classes and seeing where his friends go on to college. For Hayden, he has his sights set on Blinn College in Bryan, Texas, and then hopes to transfer to Texas A&M to study history.

14

Amy Toeniskoetter Flower Mound High School PRESIDENT OF CIRCLE OF FRIENDS Amy Toeniskoetter’s brother Bryan, who has special needs, has had such an influence on her life, he has essentially paved her path. Amy has been involved with Circle of Friends, a social unit at FMHS that fosters friendships between students with disabilities and their nondisabled peers through activities, since her freshman year. This school year she will serve as its president. Amy has also volunteered with LISD’s Special Olympics team, and she’s starting her third American Sign Language class this fall as a member of the Sign Language Honor Society. She’s also a member of National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society). An active member of her church, Amy helps with the middle school ministry and confirmation retreat. She has also attended the Steubenville Lone Star Catholic youth conference in Irving this summer, something she looks forward to every summer. When she’s not busy volunteering, Amy focuses on her studies, particularly science. “I find it fascinating that even big things can be scaled down to the smallest particle,” she says. But most of all, she’s looking forward to making new memories as a senior. In the future, this native Flower Mounder is hoping to follow in her parents’ footsteps and become an Aggie. “My dream school is Texas A&M,” Amy says. “My parents both graduated from there, and I’ve grown up attending football games. The spirit of Aggieland is definitely a draw.”

15

Rogelio Armino Flower Mound High School HONOR STUDENT AND LINGUIST Rogelio Armino was born in El Paso, Texas, to Mexican parents, so he was raised in a dual-language household. In high school, he began taking French and is now well-versed in a third language. Along the way, he has developed both an ear and a passion for learning languages. He has also become quite adept at making friends and impressing his teachers. Rogelio moved to Flower Mound from Columbus, Ohio, with his family as a sophomore. “It was painfully cold in Ohio,” he says. He quickly made friends and joined the swim team. As a junior, he competed in the state meet. “This year, I plan on being a team captain,” he adds. Rogelio plays the viola in the school orchestra and is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Beta (math honor society), English Honor Society and French Honor Society; he has earned two academic achievement awards. He’s also a member of the Board Gaming Club and volunteers in the FMHS orchestra library. After school, he can be found tutoring his classmates in French and helping teachers as needed—displaying a generous spirit that has earned him four Jammin’ Jag awards for citizenship. “Everyone is so nice at Flower Mound, it’s hard not to make friends,” he says. “I love how many options we have for classes, clubs and activities.” He’s exploring opportunities for college, with Baylor University and Austin College currently on his radar, and plans to possibly study optometry or astronomy with an emphasis on foreign languages.

16

Komal Karumuru Marcus High School SINGER AND NEUROLOGY INTERN Komal Karumuru’s memory of a family friend who died of a brain tumor has fueled her passion for learning more about the brain and how it functions. On her own, she found an opportunity to intern at the Center for BrainHealth [The University of Texas at Dallas] and plans to pursue a career in medicine. She’s also a volunteer at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center [Grapevine]. This summer, she also attended the 2017 session of Bluebonnet Girls State along with nearly 600 other young women from across Texas. At Marcus, she founded and is president of the Interact Rotary Club, which focuses on developing leadership skills and provides leadership opportunities for students. Komal is also a two-time winner of Marcus Idol and plans to compete again this year. She is a member of Fusion, the girls’ a cappella team, and sings with the Marcus Varsity Choir. Summer 2015, she sang the Star-Spangled Banner at Flower Mound’s Independence Fest. “I love singing on stage,” she says. “The bigger the audience, the better!” Komal is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Beta (math honor society), English Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Medical Club. She’s also a student volunteer with and secretary of the Marcus chapter of Journey to Dream. “I’m really excited for the college application process and what’s available to me in the world,” she says. “Although I’m excited to make memories my senior year, I definitely want to grow more in my knowledge of biomedical engineering.”

17

Haley Goerlich Flower Mound High School SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT AND VARSITY ATHLETIC TRAINER Haley Goerlich credits her AP chemistry teacher, Mr. Brian Dalak, for fostering her interest in science. She has been an athletic trainer and, her senior year, will work with the varsity football and baseball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Beta (math honor society), English Honor Society and Science Honor Society. As senior class president, Haley wants to make her classmates’ senior year the best year of high school. “I’m hoping to get the leaders of all the clubs together at least once a month to share what their groups are doing and events that are coming up so we’re all better informed,” she says. This summer, Haley worked at Sonic, took three classes and went to Pine Cove camp with her younger brother. During the school year, she typically eats lunch with Circle of Friends and, outside of school, finds time to hang out with a younger student with autism, taking him to do activities such as riding go-carts. This year, she will serve as the historian for Circle of Friends. She is considering studying emergency medicine at either the University of Texas, Oklahoma University or the University of Alabama. “I’m really looking forward to branching out a little, so I can figure out what I want to do when I grow up,” she says.

18

Nathan Smith Marcus High School STUDENT LEADER AND SERVANT OF GOD Nathan Smith has already established a couple of goals as he wraps up his high school career. “I played basketball my freshman and sophomore years,” he says, “but I wanted to challenge myself more so, my junior year, I tried out for academic decathlon and made it.” He went on to win a gold medal at state. As a senior, he hopes to finish in the top 10 percent of his class and win three medals at the Texas Academic Decathlon meet. Outside of school, Nathan is involved with his church family at Valley Creek, serving with the children’s ministry and completing a mission trip to Honduras this summer with a medical brigade. “Being able to serve has been a rewarding experience,” he adds. He has also attended Generate, a leadership class that teaches the values common in servant leaders. As a member of National Honor Society, Nathan volunteers with Seniors in Motion at the Flower Mound Senior Center. He is considering Baylor University, Texas A&M, Texas Christian University and The University of Texas at Austin to obtain an MBA with a minor in theology studies or ministry. “I walked out of Marcus my junior year really excited to come back this year,” he says. “I want to help my classmates develop as young men and women. And personally, I look forward to growing in my faith, hearing what God has in store for my life and coming out the other side with a bright hope for the future.”

KEEP OUR SIDEWALKS SAFE FOR STUDENTS Prepare for the new school year by making sure the sidewalks outside your home are pedestrianfriendly as well as code-compliant. This is a great time to trim all tree limbs that hang over sidewalks, allowing for a vertical clearance of at least eight feet, and at least 14 feet over streets. Also, make sure sidewalks are clear of encroaching vegetation, such as bushes and groundcover, and free of mud build-up and other trash or debris. By following a few simple sidewalk spruce-up tips, you’re helping kids travel to and from school safely, while upholding Flower Mound property standards. If you’d like more information or would like to report a potential violation, please call 972.874.6340 or visit flowermound.com/reportviolation. CROSS TIMBERS ROTARY INSTALLS NEW PRESIDENT, AWARDS GRANTS Founded by six enthusiastic charter members— Chuck Elsey, Julie Meyers, Lori Fickling, Lori Walker and Andy and Ginger Eads—Cross Timbers Rotary kicked off its third year with the installation of Lori Walker as president at a recent luncheon. Kumon Math and Reading Centers

Through an innovative, challenging theme-based/interdisciplinary curriculum with a focus on math and science, EPS students are encouraged to become creative, active and engaged learners and problem-solvers. Teachers go above and beyond to nurture and challenge students while fostering a love of learning and self-discovery. Relationships develop in the classroom and extend into the entire school community, allowing for teachers, parents and students to know one another well. Because of the small ratio of students to teachers, all students are individually encouraged to achieve their highest potential – the sky is the limit! In fact, EPS students scored in the top 1.75% of students nationwide on the 2017 Iowa Assessment. Going beyond traditional subjects, EPS students gain a global perspective and develop cultural sensitivity through Mandarin and Spanish language programs. A keen sense of family and community is nurtured through many family-oriented activities and community events.

Kumon instills in students the skills and mindset necessary to learn new material without being taught. With help from a certified instructor, children are able to move at their own pace through individualized instruction. When a student requires help, the necessary steps are taken to ensure the child can work on a skill until it’s mastered. By utilizing an independent, self-study curriculum, Kumon’s method of learning allows students to advance at their own pace. When children continue to study at a level that is appropriate for their ability, they will catch up with their peers and eventually advance far beyond the school grade level. Students who study far beyond school grade level develop self-learning ability and good study habits. These essential study skills, when applied across all schoolwork, will improve their performance.

A Smarter Study Station THE TAYLOR WALNUT DESK OFFERS A STREAMLINED SPACE FOR SCHOLARS

I DETAILS Price: $399 Dimensions: 48"W x 50"H x 22"D Built-in hutch LandOfNod.com

fm STYLE Magazine

f your kids are accustomed to splaying out their homework in the same spot you’re serving dinner, just say no to the kitchen-table takeover. Instead, give them a designated space to complete their after-school assignments and study sessions. The Taylor Walnut Desk is just the place to inspire schoolwork diligence. Featuring a handy drawer for storing notepads, calculators, folders and other essentials, this desk makes it easy for your kid to get organized. A built-in hutch and accessory bar allow kids to customize their space with a hanging bin or hanging pen cup. You’ll need to buy these separately, but they’re perfect for storing schoolwork necessities, showing off décor or organizing those A+ papers before they appear on the fridge. The biggest perk to this desk, though? When your kids know they have a designated spot just for them, it just might give them an extra kick of motivation to hit their homework head-on. All your kids need is a comfy seat (the desk coordinates perfectly with any desk

chair from Land of Nod), and they’re ready to tackle any project. You won’t find this desk just anywhere; it’s made exclusively for Land of Nod by designer Bill Eastburn. Made from solid walnut with natural grain, this study station lends warmth to any space. It’s also available in classic white, if that better suits your style. With its sleek, minimalist design, this piece fits seamlessly in any room in your home. So if your kitchen looks more like a classroom, consider this your solution. The desk ships flat in a box, so assembly is required. And don’t worry about your kid being overzealous when approaching an assignment—the desk includes a tip-restraint kit to prevent tipping. With back-to-school season inevitably comes the renewed challenge of where your kids will complete their homework assignments. But with the Taylor Walnut Desk, students get their own homework headquarters. And who knows? They just might look forward to knocking out those math problems or finishing that essay. Hats off to the scholars!

MARCUS HIGH SCHOOL GRAD FINDS COUNTRY MUSIC HER “PICK ME UP”

I

f you listen to Radio Disney Country or have a country playlist on your Spotify account, chances are you’ve heard the soulful, upbeat songs of Kaylee Rutland. This up-and-coming performer and songwriter has been named Country Living magazine’s Artist to Watch and landed among Billboard magazine’s Top 10 Artists to Watch. This summer, she came home to Flower Mound to visit friends and family while enjoying a brief break from her studies at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Get to know more about Kaylee here and be sure to listen to her latest hit “Pick Me Up” wherever you source your tunes!

WHEN I COME HOME TO FLOWER MOUND, I HAVE TO VISIT: with my family and friends! What we do varies; there are my fellow Marcus alums, whom I spend hours with, catching up over coffee or frozen yogurt, piled high with chocolate or bugging our friends who work at Chick-fil-A in the drive-thru. I’ll spend time with my family walking the pups outside around the neighborhood. And the occasional stargazing on the church rooftop with my friends from church. I FELL IN LOVE WITH PERFORMING: when I was really young! It was a church Christmas musical. Standing behind the microphone and all the excitement; I was hooked! I KNEW I HAD TO PURSUE MUSIC AS A CAREER WHEN: I was given an opportunity to sing at age eight. Although I was a shy kid, there was a special music director who encouraged me to share my voice. That first moment with a solo, I fell in love with music, and knew that performing was something I wanted to pursue forever. SEEING PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY MUSIC MAKES ME FEEL: humbled, honestly. My grandparents came to CMA Fest this year and told me about an encounter with a fan while they were in line to see me perform on the Radio Disney country stage. It was a group who came to CMA Fest specially to see me! It was so exciting and a special moment that they came to hear me play. JUGGLING MY EDUCATION AND MY CAREER HAS MEANT: a lot of dedication. It requires a lot of travel, running from rehearsals to a show and back to the airport, then filling the gaps with homework. I’m studying music business and set to graduate this winter—woohoo! It’s so rewarding because I get to sing and play while I learn the

business side of things, too. It’s fulfilling to learn in a classroom environment and live and work in that same industry. MAKING THE “PICK ME UP” MUSIC VIDEO WAS: so much fun and cold! It was early December and it had just rained, so the ground was soaked and completely muddy. It was also really cold outside (less than 30°). As crazy as that sounds, it kind of made for a more fun environment. Everyone in the cast was running around this car lot, slipping in the mud and pretending that we weren’t as cold as we really were. It was so much fun to meet all the crew, and we just spent the day playing in the mud. PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT: I grew up competing in Bible quiz. I learned over 500 Bible facts and scripture verses and can recite all 66 books of the Bible in less than 25 seconds. THE MOST INSPIRING PERSON I EVER MET IS: my mom! She has raised four kids, been a part of building a successful company, takes the time to do what she loves and she’s a great mom, sister and daughter. Honestly, she's a superwoman, and she’s humble. I can talk to her about anything and she’s always there. #momgoals THE THEME SONG TO MY LIFE IS: “Fear” by Ben Rector. It’s really upbeat. The lyrics talk about having a fear and getting over the fear to do what you absolutely love to do. My favorite verse is, I learned to dance with the fear, that I’ve been running from. Every time I hear it, I think, Yes; this how I should live my life!

LIVE MUSIC ON THE MENU THE BOMB FACTORY 2713 Canton Street, Dallas TheBombFactory.com

LOCAL VENUES ARE SERVING UP THE PERFECT COMBO

If you’re going out for dinner and drinks, why not add a little live music to the mix?

The Metroplex is packed with a variety of places to liven up your usual night out. While these venues can certainly stand on their own for the bites or the beats, we think they’re better together. Here are a few of our favorite venues to dine, drink and/or dance the night away.

fm STYLE Magazine

The Bomb Factory is aptly named given its history. The building began as a Ford automobile manufacturing plant in the early 1900s and was repurposed during World War II to manufacture bombs and ammunition for American military installations. The original walls of the factory still stand; the rest of the facility underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation and features state-of-the-art sound and light technology. Situated in the heart of historic Deep Ellum in downtown Dallas, the 50,000-square-foot facility is now one of the trendiest Metroplex live music destinations. The venue has played host to a variety of musicians and bands ranging from Erykah Badu, The Lumineers and Ludacris. Dining at The Bomb Factory consists of a full menu by Barrister BBQ and a variety of onsite food trucks. You can also belly up to five full bars located throughout the venue. The dress code is anything goes, so wear that tank top and flip-flops, or get completely decked out. Some people even wear costumes in tribute to the band playing. The only dress code requirement is that costumes must not block the view of people behind or around you. Otherwise, get as wild and crazy as you want! The Bomb Factory is an all-ages club, but patrons under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 or over. Those age 16 and up are admitted without supervision, and all ages must purchase a ticket to attend concerts. When the show is over, you could Uber back home or stay at a local hotel such as the Omni or Hotel Indigo. AUG 17 • 41

LAKESIDE MUSIC SERIES 2314 Lakeside Parkway, Flower Mound LakesideDFW.com

SERVE MINE WITH SOUL

Just off FM 2499 in The Shops at Lakeside lies an unassuming patch of grass and a concrete stage in the parking area by Epic Gelato. While the plaza may seem like a lone greenspace amid shops and restaurants, every Friday night during the summer and into warm fall weekends, it transforms into a setting for an outdoor concert. Featured family-friendly entertainment includes seasoned performers such as singer/guitarist Sebastian Valenzuela, Chaz Marie (the “Hillbilly Aretha” [Franklin]) and blues guitarist Chant Duplantier. Earlier this year, Mio Nonno Trattoria— with a patio facing the performances—joined Carvao Prime Brazilian Steakhouse, Paradise Bistro & Coffee Co., Epic Gelato and Starbucks, followed by Hanaya, a Japanese restaurant featuring hibachi, sushi and Asian fusion, and Milwaukee Joe’s ice cream shop. Mena’s TexMex Cantina will be opening soon. Plan to bring a blanket or chairs for kicking back and enjoying the sights and sounds of outdoor concerts in your own hometown. Paradise Bistro serves as the rain-out location so performances go on, rain or shine.

DOCK AROUND THE CLOCK

ROCKIN’ S BAR & GRILL 4600 Murrell Park Road, Flower Mound RockinSLakeGrapevine.com Rockin’ S Bar & Grill is perhaps the most unique dining and entertainment venue on our list. Located on Lake Grapevine, it has everything you need for a family-friendly entertainment experience. This laid-back, dockside restaurant features two main areas for seating, including a cozy interior dining area as well as seating outside on the dock. Want to take in a summer sunset? This is a great place to enjoy it. Kids and adults alike love the relaxed atmosphere, from the ducks swimming nearby to the birds sailing over the water. Swarms of fish can be seen from the dock’s edge and will eat crumbs of bread tossed over the side. And did we mention the summer breeze? It’s especially nice coming off the lake this time of year. The music featured at Rockin’ S varies by date. Some nights are dedicated to live bands while others are devoted to hours of karaoke fun. The restaurant’s online events calendar announces what bands are playing by date and includes links to the bands’ websites to help you decide what you’re in the mood for. A particularly interesting feature of this venue is that the music can be heard from wherever you decide to sit and dine, whether in the indoor dining area, outside on the deck or even from your docked boat. fm STYLE Magazine

THE FREE MAN CAJUN CAFÉ AND LOUNGE 2626 Commerce Street, Dallas FreeManDallas.com If you’re hungry for some authentic Cajun cuisine along with fantastic live music, take a jaunt over to The Free Man Cajun Café in Dallas. The restaurant aims to provide great food, music and atmosphere to make it worth the trip every time. Whether you’re into jazz, swing or Dixieland music, The Free Man will get your toes tappin’ seven days a week from 7 to 10 p.m. If you prefer your set list filled with rock, alt rock, country, folk or hip-hop, check out the venue earlier in the day. The restaurant showcases a live mixture of these genres from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. A favorite among regulars is a group called The Free Loaders, a six-piece blues/jazz/swing band fronted by The Free Man’s owner, John Jay Myers, who plays drums for the group. The house band plays every Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m., and about twice a month on weekends. There is never a cover charge, and the restaurant/soundstage is an all-ages venue until 10 p.m. There is no enforced dress code, so come as you are and check out the famous Free Man experience for yourself. School’s in Session PUBLIC SCHOOL 972 MAKES THE GRADE FOR COMFORT FOOD AND CRAFT BEER

D PUBLIC SCHOOL 972 14854 Montfort Avenue Addison 972.788.8484 PSOnTap.com

46 • AUG 17

espite its name, Public School 972 isn’t a place of higher learning—at least not in the traditional sense. The Californiabased gastropub aims to educate North Texans on the art of food and beer. Called PS 972 for short, the Addison eatery merges modern tastes with convivial fare. Add a chef-driven, seasonally inspired menu, and it’s a school everyone can get excited about. We like how PS 972 carries a scholastic theme throughout, from black-and-white composition notebooks for menus to a daily happy hour called recess. Even better that recess kicks off at 3 p.m. with wine on tap plus signature cocktails and craft beer from independent brewers such as Revolver Brewing and Oak Highlands Brewery, among other

local and regional favorites. For extra credit, the restaurant adds a shuffleboard, darts and Jenga to the mix. “It’s a very lively restaurant and serves as the perfect neighborhood hangout for people to relax, unwind and have fun,” says Phil Kastel, executive VP of culinary. Kastel describes PS 972, Texas’ second location of the gastropub, as approachable and laidback. If you’re tired of the same old thing when you dine out, this is the place to try something new. “It’s a spot for those who like to experiment with fun and unique flavors,” Kastel says. “[We serve] American comfort food with a twist—think Sriracha ketchup or meatballs with angry sauce.”

fmStyleMagazine.com

LOCALFLAVOR review The chef-driven menu has a little something for all tastes, from salads and handtossed pizza to handcrafted burgers as well as steak and fish dishes. With nine locations across five states, each Public School restaurant is a one-of-a-kind experience. For starters, the restaurant uses local ingredients whenever possible. The menu also changes seasonally to keep guests coming back for fun, interesting dishes. “We draw inspiration from our personal tastes and then experiment to see how we can make them unique or add modern elements,” says Kastel. “We get inspired by traveling among our different locations and learning more about the unique neighborhoods, cultures and flavors that make up each local community.” If you haven’t stopped into PS 972 yet, Kastel recommends trying a couple of his personal favorite menu items: Meatballs in Arrabiata Sauce and the Korean-Style Brussels Sprouts with Smoked Bacon. “Both are great twists on traditional bites,” he says. You also can’t go wrong with the always-popular Bacon Cheddar Tots—massive tots loaded with melty cheese and salty bacon. When it comes to burgers, the BBQ Bison Burger reigns supreme. A grass-fed patty is made exponentially better with whiskey barbecue sauce, Emmental cheese, bacon and mushrooms. On the lighter side of the menu, the Roasted Chicken and Quinoa Salad (arugula, feta, avocado, toasted walnuts and champagne vinaigrette) is a winner. PS 972 doesn’t offer much on the sweet side, but with the Nutella Cookie Sandwich, there’s really no need for improvement. When you get a mouthful of vanilla bean ice cream, bacon brittle and chocolate chunk cookie, it’s all you need to give this dessert an A+. Want other options? Check the dessert special of the day on the restaurant’s chalkboard. If you’re seeking a new spot for weekend brunch, PS 972 offers plenty of enticing reasons to make the drive. The Eggs Benedict Pizza (prosciutto, Grana Padano cheese, hollandaise and fried eggs) and the Edamame Hummus Toast (avocado, togarashi, bacon, furikake and eggs) are standouts. And because brunch calls for a little bubbly, we suggest settling in with a $5 carafe of mimosas or beermosas. When you feel nostalgic about your school days but also want to enjoy a cold beer with your burger (or a mimosa with your waffle), PS 972 will satisfy your yearning.

LOCALFLAVOR drink this

berry Delicious Enjoy an Absolut-ly refreshing cocktail by Piranha Killer Summer is the best time to enjoy fresh, fruity drinks, but some can be overly sweet or contain enough calories to count as dessert. For a refreshing drink that’s both tangy and tasty, try Piranha Killer Sushi’s take on the ever-popular Moscow Mule. Muddled ripe blackberries, a hint of lime and, of course, some slightly spicy ginger beer make this drink particularly flavorful. Add a sprig of mint and fresh berries, and you’ve got a summery sip that’s sure to quench your thirst. The staff at Piranha suggest indulging in some salmon ceviche as an accompaniment. Enjoy on the restaurant’s outdoor patio or at home with the recipe below.

Tasty Science Fresh ingredients plus a little razzle-dazzle create the best frozen treats at Sub Zero

SUB ZERO ICE CREAM AND YOGURT 3721 Justin Road Flower Mound 214.285.2773 SubZeroIceCream.com

fm STYLE Magazine

If you remember anything from your high school chemistry class, it’s probably this: liquid nitrogen freezes anything it comes in contact with. That and everyone looks goofy in safety goggles. But what you probably didn’t learn is that when liquid nitrogen meets a flavorful, creamy base, the result is absolutely delicious. Founded 12 years ago by chemist and innovator Jerry Hancock and his wife, Naomi, a former teacher, Sub Zero made national news on “Shark Tank” in 2013. Now a thriving franchise, Sub Zero is expanding across the globe with enthusiastic franchisees helping to reach previously untapped markets. Here in North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington grads and brothers Vinnie and Neil Patel partnered with their good friend and classmate Jatin Patel to bring the uniquely cool concept to folks across the Metroplex—including right here in Flower Mound. On the horizon for the Patels are another 10 to 14 stores in the next few years with a Las Colinas location opening soon. While the concept might seem a bit gimmicky, the product proves to be incredibly delectable. And, with so many options for bases, flavors and mix-ins, you can visit every day of the week and try something different. “Ice cream is the number one dessert,” Jatin Patel says, “and with our variety of base options, everyone can experience dessert together.” Sub Zero allows customers to first select their base—original, low-fat, sugar-free, nondairy or vegan. Then choose from nearly 40 flavors such as cake batter, chocolate, cotton candy, root beer or even huckleberry. Finally, one of 30 mix-ins can be added to the base before it’s changed from a liquid to a frozen delight. Select a cup or waffle cone made daily on site. The fresh factor—along with the cool right-before-your-eyes transformation—keeps people coming back for more. “Nothing in our store is ever premade or pre-scooped from a tub,” Patel says. “And when you freeze something that fast—at negative 321 degrees— you encapsulate millions of ice crystals, so very little air content goes into the product when mixing.” The result is the smoothest ice cream or yogurt you’ve ever experienced. “We expected we’d be busy,” Patel says of their successful opening in May, “but we didn’t anticipate having lines out the door.” Luckily the experience—from selection to consumption— takes less than a minute to achieve, so you don’t wait long to get your dessert. And if you prefer yogurt, Italian ice, a shake or smoothie to cool you off, you have those options, too. On the horizon, additional flavors and pies will soon be added to the menu. You can also expect to see Sub Zero take its show on the road with a portable nitrogen tank for catering and classroom demonstrations. Be sure to follow all the exciting news on social media @SubZeroFlowerMound, especially Facebook and Instagram. You won’t want to miss a bit of the blast!

HOME STYLE TWEAKS | TIPS | TRENDS

creative workstations

W

hether you work from home or just need a place to flex your creative muscles, carving out a space in your home that inspires you is key to accomplishing your goals. If your home is equipped with an office or study, you already have a designated place for productivity. If you don’t have a home office or someone else in the family uses that space, don’t fret. We can help you create a perfect space for inspiration.

CLEAN AND BRIGHT Dark spaces are great for sleeping—and for storing bottles of wine—but when it comes to getting your creative mojo flowing, let there be light. More specifically, let there be soft, natural light and the color green. Research has shown that looking at shades of green helps enhance your creative performance, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Consider adding mirrors to reflect and multiply the room’s natural light, and framed photos or art in metallic frames can also be a great source of added gleam. If the room has dark flooring, layer with a lightcolored rug or, if you have dark built-ins, painting shelving a warm color such as cream or gray can soften the room. Designer Nate Berkus suggests adding an element of warmth to a home workspace with textured pillows and setting your work station up to face a window rather than a wall. Berkus also suggests using round furniture in a confined space, such as accent tables, to increase circulation. THE ESSENTIALS Perhaps the most vital component of any creative space is storage. Before getting organized, determine the necessary equipment for your workspace. Do you need more than a computer and a printer? Using a laptop versus a desktop frees you up to more easily move about your space and rearranging furniture doesn’t require as much forethought.

Decide what tools of the trade are essential, and find the best means for keeping your area neat and tidy. If organization isn’t your forte, consider hiring a professional organizer or scheduling a consult at a retailer such as The Container Store. Be sure to include objects in the room that inspire you—photographs, pieces of art, objects from your travels or family heirlooms that evoke good memories. Find a desk that best suits your needs. Unless you require lots of surface area for projects, choose a workstation that doesn’t take up a lot of space so you won’t be tempted to collect clutter. Plus, negative space around the room allows the eyes to rest. Be creative when choosing seating. Maybe an adjustable stool works better than a simple desk chair. And don’t forget to include places for comfortable seating when you need to change your perspective or when others want to join you for a welcome reprieve. BEYOND FOUR WALLS Inspiration cannot be confined to a specific space, so don’t hesitate to try out different rooms in your home—or even outside your home. A comfortable niche on an outdoor patio or porch might provide just the right place to set up a makeshift work space. Perhaps your kitchen has an underused cabinet area that works for you. Or a seldom-occupied spare bedroom could be the perfect place to house a desk and supplies. Keep in mind, Stephen King wrote Carrie on a makeshift desk in his laundry room, wedged between the washer and dryer, so the muse can find you where you least expect it. Just keep work out of your bedroom. Your bedroom should be a refuge of relaxation and not a constant reminder of unfinished projects.

The Best in Texas Beaches TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO FAMILY-FRIENDLY SOUTHERN SHORES

W

ith school buses soon coming out of retirement for the season, taking a family vacation may not be top of mind. However, a beach family getaway is not out of the question, yet! The Gulf of Mexico may create beaches for five U.S. states, but we all know the best ones are found along the Texas coast. With islands and bays galore down south, here are some of our favorites.

Stewart Beach, Galveston Galveston boasts more than 32 miles of Gulf-side beaches, but not all sand was created equal. There are seven beach parks along the Gulf coast of Galveston, but only one is recommended as the family-friendly one of the bunch. Located on the northeastern side of Galveston Island, Stewart Beach has much to offer in terms of amenities. The restrooms and showers are well taken care of, and

54 • AUG 17

Stewart is one of the few beaches with lifeguards on duty. There is also a souvenir shop and snack bar. Beach wheelchairs make beach fun accessible for sun worshippers and swimmers of all ages. You can also rent chairs and umbrellas if you’d rather not feel the burn. Rest assured the day will remain family-friendly, as no alcohol is allowed on this beach. Admission ranges from $10 to $12. If you don’t plan on camping on another beach nearby or opted not to rent a beach house, there are many hotels along Galveston’s Gulf coast. But only one can boast status as being the most historic—at more than 100 years old! The Hotel Galvez and Spa is located approximately one and a half miles south of Stewart Beach. It offers not only a premium night’s sleep, but also an onsite health spa and a fully equipped fitness center. The swimming pool and hot tub make for a well-rounded resort-style experience. While there may be no need to venture out while staying at the Galvez (aside from visiting Stewart Beach), the hotel provides bicycles to guests allowing you to explore the seawall of Galveston Island and its many restaurants, shops and, of course, beaches. Mustang Island, Port Aransas Families looking for a beach vacation sans myriad of tourists, perhaps found at other Gulf Coast shores, should plan to visit Mustang Island. To find this almosthidden gem, make your way south of Corpus Christi across the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway to the island. With an 18-mile stretch of public shoreline, Mustang Island is for surfers, sand castle architects, sunbathers and nature lovers. It’s not unusual for beach goers to kayak along the coast in the morning, relax under an umbrella in the afternoon sun and wade in the warm evening waters of the Gulf admiring some of the 600 species of native fish—all in one day. And at the end of your very full day, the question is: Where will you stay? You could choose between campsites and RV parks, but if you are looking to crash in a beach town, look to Port Aransas or “Port A,” as locals call it. Choose from hotels, cottages or beach houses—Port A offers all three. As the only city on Mustang Island, it’s packed with tons of character in a small-town setting where you can sleep, shop and dine on island time. When in the Gulf, do as Gulf diners do—look for the best seafood in town. Ranked as the No. 1 Port Aransas restaurant by Trip Advisor, Irie’s Island Food promises to serve dishes that put a twist on local island favorites and those from around the world. Matagorda Bay and Beach, Matagorda If you are looking for the perfect balance of high-activity and laid-back vacationing, a visit to Matagorda Bay and Beach is in order. Located at the mouth of the Colorado River on the upper Texas coast, the town of Matagorda sees its share of tourists. However, with 22 miles of beach reachable by vehicle and an additional 33 miles only accessible by boat, there’s plenty of sand to go around. You can build sandcastles, search for sand dollars and dip your feet in the sparkling waters of the bay. If you’d rather dip a fishing line in the bay waters, there are 55 miles of coastline to explore. The bay itself is 6.6 feet deep and covers approximately 422 square miles. Known for being one of the best fishing locations in the region, Matagorda Bay has garnered this status based on its nutrient-rich estuary that is home to more than 21 different types of fish. Whether you prefer wade fishing, drift fishing, surf fishing or offshore fishing from small boats, the bay—and an additional plethora of rivers, creeks and bayous—is a fisherman’s paradise. If you can pull yourself away from the shore, we suggest heading to Poco Playa Bar and Village Restaurant. This 17,000-square-foot restaurant, bar and artisan village features a casual indoor and outdoor dining and drinking eatery, tackle shop, boutique and museum. MatagordaBayTexas.com, PocoPlaya.com
