When I was a kid, I used to imagine how I could turn off my bedroom light without having to leave my cozy covers. I didn’t have a lamp for reading and, once snuggled in and warm, I hated getting back out of bed after I’d closed my book. I dreamed of making a retractable arm that would do the job from across the room. I even tried using a yardstick once, but it proved impossible. I guess I put my entrepreneurial spirit to bed many years ago. But today we are surrounded by people and products born from ingenuity and successful attempts of those undeterred by early bouts of failure. Here in Flower Mound, local entrepreneurs have discovered INNOVATE at Parker Square as not only a place for affordable office space and Wi-Fi, but also for making invaluable connections needed to launch their ideas. Read about two inspiring success stories on page 12. And for those needing a little boost to either launch or grow their small businesses, turn to page 22 and read how Invest Local is bridging the gap between self-funding and traditional business loans. Again, it’s all about making connections—this time linking local investors to local business. You also need to read Kathy O’Keefe’s inspiring story on page 50. This local mom turned personal tragedy into a way to help other families fight addiction. Her perseverance and dedication recently earned her the well-deserved distinction of Flower Mound’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year. No issue of Flower Mound Style is complete without our regular departments such as Local Flavor, Media Room and Spotlight. Last month we introduced our first Shelter Pet of the Month and, this month, we hope you enjoy turning to HomeStyle for inspiration on keeping your house a place you love coming home to each evening. And if your home has lights that turn off automatically when you finish reading in bed, call me. I’d still love to know how this works!

THIS LIFE I LIVE RORY FEEK FEBRUARY 14

Broken Hearts and Lifted Spirits Not all love stories have happy endings, but singer/songwriter Rory Feek and his wife, Joey, chose to share theirs with the world, despite Joey losing her battle against cancer in March 2016. In his book, “This Life I Live: One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever,” Rory opens up about his childhood struggles, his music and film career and other parts of his life he calls ordinary. But most importantly, he shares details about how he and Joey met, fell in love and then he had to let her go. The Feeks’ spirituality gave them hope and peace, and Rory’s life became extraordinary when he met Joey, the “greatest person” he has ever known.

24: LEGACY THE GREAT WALL IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 17

A Story of Untold Greatness Along with Stonehenge and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Wall of China keeps the world wondering of its existence. Engineers and architects designed and built the series of fortifications between 700 and 400 B.C., across what was then the northern border of China. The wall was meant to keep intruders out, especially during times of war, but director Yimou Zhang and screenwriter Marshall Herskovitz (“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”) ask audiences to reconsider who— or what—these intruders might actually be. After mercenary Matt Damon (the Jason Bourne films) is held prisoner within the Great Wall, he discovers the mystery behind the structure and joins elite warriors to try to keep out a seemingly unstoppable force.

FOX FEBRUARY 5

Another Day, Another Hour Twenty-four hours may not seem like much time, but if viewers learned anything from the Emmy Award-winning Fox television series “24,” an action-packed, espionage drama needs time to unfold. The clock starts ticking in “24: Legacy” as Sergeant Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins, “Straight Outta Compton”) learns that despite being placed in a witness protection program, he has been exposed. Six months prior, an elite squad of the U.S. Army, led by Carter, killed terrorist leader Sheik Ibrahim Bin-Khalid. Enlisting the help of intelligence officer Rebecca Ingram (Miranda Otto, “Homeland”), Carter and his team do what they can to survive the next 24 hours.

The Town of Flower Mound has long been supportive of new business startups, offering incentives and cooperating with investors interested in opening locations in Flower Mound. Last year, at the urging of local serial entrepreneur Jason Adams, the town launched its own venture: INNOVATE in Parker Square. Adams agreed to helm the project that would charge a small monthly fee to individuals to use the space for office, meetings and networking.

T

he entrepreneurs were already here, Adams reasoned, working from their homes and camping out at coffee shops. They just needed a place to meet each other along with investors and professionals who could nurture them until their ventures became viable. “INNOVATE makes it possible for the players in the entrepreneurial landscape to collide with each other by removing the barriers between them,” Adams says. “We’re here to foster and facilitate those interactions to allow people to be successful.” We spoke with two business startups who found the connections necessary at INNOVATE to take their ideas from conception to completion.

TANNER MAXSON AMMOSUBSCRIPTION.COM What started as a conversation with his wife ended up as the impetus for a business idea. Tanner Maxson was in the kitchen, complaining to his wife about how he couldn’t find his favorite ammunition locally and, whenever he did find it, he couldn’t afford to stock up on it. She listened as she also changed out the water filter in the refrigerator. He asked her how she managed to keep up with him, their four kids and remember to change the filter. “She said she set up a subscription on Amazon, and it shipped automatically every six months,” Maxson says. So Maxson, a former airman in the U.S. Air Force who completed tours in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Korea and Guam, looked to see if he could subscribe online and have his ammunition delivered to him. No such service existed. “I bought the domain name AmmoSubscription. com immediately,” he says, “because I knew it would add value to the idea.” He later became the first client to rent 12 • FEB 17

space at INNOVATE, after meeting Jason Adams at a coffee shop, and officially launched the company in December 2016. “AmmoSubscription.com is a way for shooters to get ammunition delivered to their doors on a monthly basis,” says Maxson. “There were some particular rulings that would keep me from getting my favorite ammunition, and I didn’t have enough money to invest in ammo that I didn’t need at the time. It was overpriced and I couldn’t find it locally.” AmmoSubscription.com is now filling orders to first subscribers and fulfilling orders from a warehouse in Fort Worth. “As our subscriptions increase, we will hire more people to fill orders,” he adds. “Our ultimate goal is to have a representative at every gun show in the United States to sell subscriptions.” Maxson names two reason why INNOVATE has been the ideal place for him to launch his business. First, it provides a place for him to work without the distractions of home, with plenty of room for his entire team to meet. “Sometimes I eat three meals a day here and last night I worked until 4 a.m.,” he says. Renting space for $150 a month has been extremely economical, and he’s learned cost-saving ideas from fellow tenants such as utilizing Facebook for marketing. Now AmmoSubscription.com has over 17,000 followers on Facebook, and Maxson is able to pass his newfound social media skills along to others. Second, he sees his skillset honed by being surrounded by like-minded individuals. “If you’re looking for investors, it’s likely they will blow through the room,” Maxson says. “INNOVATE is a great place for a start-up.” He even found fmStyleMagazine.com

an opportunity to get his product placed in a new movie. “That’s not costing me a dime but is a direct result of forming relationships here,” he adds. The road to starting a successful enterprise is paved with setbacks, but those who persevere can reap huge rewards. “For people who are thinking about starting a company, INNOVATE is the place to start,” Maxson says. “We help each other learn and help each other launch. It’s a long process from idea to first customer.”

JUSTIN ATEN | CUP-PILOT.COM Like most entrepreneurs, Justin Aten is constantly thinking about new inventions or how to improve upon existing products. And like many working parents, his career took precedence over pursuing his dreams. But when the company he was working for was sold last year, Aten decided to take some time off and seize the opportunity to bring one of his many ideas to fruition. He was working from home when the September issue of Flower Mound Style landed in his mailbox, and when Aten read the article about Jason Adams and INNOVATE, he decided to check out Flower Mound’s entrepreneurial center for himself. “I thought, this would be a great environment,” Aten says. “I always liked Parker Square. It’s close to home, but I never really spent much time there.” He visited a Leads networking event, hosted by the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce at INNOVATE, and when it came time for Aten to introduce himself, he announced his new career path. “I said that I hoped INNOVATE would become my new office,” Aten says. And it has. Aten has dreamed up original products and sought provisional patents on a few items that didn’t pan out. “You’re supposed to get 100 no’s before you give up,” he advises. And then one day he came across a product called the CupPilot—a mobile cup holder designed specifically for airline travel. “The inventor was retiring and wanted to sell his idea,” Aten says, “so I called him and spoke to him about it.” But Aten didn’t think he was in a position to purchase a company and lost contact with the inventor for some time. “I shared the idea with people at INNOVATE, and everyone agreed the Cup-Pilot sounded interesting,” Aten adds. Eventually, Aten reconnected with the inventor and struck a deal. “The Cup-Pilot clips to your roller bag and 14 • FEB 17

then clips to the seatback tray in front of you while you’re in flight,” he explains. “We’ve all seen people set their coffee on the floor of the plane or the seat next to them and then it ends up getting knocked over. This product eliminates that problem.” Aten has heard from customers who use the Cup-Pilot on golf carts, boats or even in their cars as an extra cup holder; they simply clip it to an air vent. Aten has expanded the color options and is taking online orders at Cup-Pilot.com. Currently manufacturing is done in China, but Aten is exploring domestic production. His next goal is to find retail locations to carry the Cup-Pilot such as airport coffee shops. Aten says INNOVATE provided affordable office space and offered connections to ancillary services such as marketing, graphic design, packaging and web design. “Jason and other INNOVATE entrepreneurs had a lot of business insight,” he says. “The ecosystem at INNOVATE is very supportive.” Aten’s business background was healthcare supply chain and contracting, “so it’s very different to transition from being a small part of a big machine to all parts of a small machine.” Aten credits the culture at INNOVATE for keeping him focused on his goals. “When you work from home, the travel time is great but it’s easy to get distracted. I’ve yet to find someone who will pay me for improving my own backyard,” he says, with a smile. For others who are contemplating a leap into entrepreneurship, Aten has a few words of wisdom: Read One Simple Idea for patenting help. Scale back on your personal expenses such as dining out. Keep in mind that it will take time to get a business going and producing revenue. And surround yourself with a network of support. “It can be risky,” he says, “but if you never leap into it, you will never know the reward.”

To make INNOVATE work for your next entrepreneurial venture, contact Jason Adams at 214.222.9129 or stop by INNOVATE at 650 Parker Square. Membership options start at $49 per month for 24-hour access to the space and high-speed Internet.

A

t some point along the journey of starting or running a business, cash flow can become an issue. For some, small business loans best resolve funding dilemmas. For others, conventional financing options either aren’t viable for various reasons or aren’t necessary for short-term money challenges. Enter the game changers: Local people with capital to spare and the passion for offering a hand-up to their neighbors. Invest Local began with three partners—Jason Adams, Susie Carter and Curtis Shore—who pooled the seed money to get the initiative rolling here in Flower Mound. “We kept coming across new companies that were running into financial issues,” says Jason Adams, a local entrepreneur, CEO of Day One Consulting and facilitator of INNOVATE Flower Mound. One such company has been successful in Flower Mound for about eight years, but recently cash flow kept them from expanding. “We provided capital for them through Invest Local,” says Adams, “and in the last quarter of 2016, they grew by 38 percent and put 53 people to work locally.” In December, the company added another 10 employees to their job force. “That’s 10 people who were unemployed and got jobs right before Christmas,” adds Adams. Invest Local is not in the business of doling out money to any business owner who extends a hand. “While the money is uncollateralized, we know them; they’re local people,” Adams says. “There are definable returns for doing it.”

SHOWING LOCAL BUSINESSES SOME LOVE When investors and innovators collide, watch out! By Pamela Hammonds fm STYLE Magazine

FEB 17 • 23

Offering a hand-up to a fledgling company is not a new concept for any of the three partners. Susie Carter, president and CEO of a local marketing and design firm, Mixed Media Creations, has donated her services to others for nearly 10 years. “Invest Local was born from taking the ways we’ve helped business owners in the past—through in-kind donations such as developing logos—and rallying our community to invest in each other,” she says. “So many small and emerging businesses don’t qualify for traditional financing, and that can become an obstacle for growth. Sometimes they can overcome it and sometimes they become stagnant.” Carter defines the concept as a way to build a network of relationships. When the local community invests in itself, growth is inevitable. It’s similar to shopping local so that neighbors are helping each other stay in business. Adams describes a local woman who wanted to start a cleaning company and needed a small loan to get started. Another Flower Mound man wanted to invest in a veteran-owned local business. Through Invest Local, those connections happened. Yet another Flower Mound business is currently a solo shop, but with the help of Invest Local and the mentoring provided by the partners, plans are in place to add six additional locations with the ultimate goal to become a nationwide company. “We believe this company has the potential to go from one store to seven and then 400-plus in a few years,” Adams says. “It’s fun to birth it and grow it out of Flower Mound.”

GETTING BUSINESSES OFF THE GROUND Invest Local is not a unique concept. Across the country, communities are finding creative ways to boost commerce internally. The trend is sometimes referred to as socially responsible investing or peer-to-peer lending. The first step to becoming socially responsible is to invest in yourself. Eliminate credit card debt, buy a house you can afford (and work to pay it off), generate your own utilities through solar power and grow your own food. What you can’t provide for yourself, purchase as many local products and services as possible. Use local banks or credit unions and create a network of trusted professionals you can count on. From there, seek investment opportunities that benefit your community, suggests Michael Shuman, author of Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Shift Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street. “We know that without collateral, you take a risk,” Adams says. “It’s about finding whatever risk level you’re comfortable with. It all depends on the appetite of the investor.” To be clear, Adams says Invest Local is not about investing other people’s money; the objective is to reduce the barriers between entrepreneurs and financing. “We know if we put that money in, we might lose it,” he adds, “but we know that our investment is providing jobs and staying in our community. We hope to get a return, but its purpose is to benefit the community.” Carter recalls when she started her business in 2007. “I didn’t have support then, so I’m passionate about helping and empowering others,” she says. “I see a hesitation that women in particular have when starting a business. If I can do it, you can do it. We want to be here to help.” To be a part of the movement, check out GoInvestLocal.com.

ou’ve set the scene for a relaxing evening at home with your significant other—the kids are in bed, a bottle of vino is chilled and your favorite movie is cued up on Netflix. You could dim the lights, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the Napoleon 60-Inch Allure Electric Fireplace. When you want to create a cozy ambiance to make your sweetie swoon, this wall-mount fireplace does it with the push of a button. The Napoleon Allure allows you to play with fire in multiple ways. You can control flame intensity, temperature and even flame color through a multi-function remote. No need to abandon your cozy cocoon on the couch to change the flickering firelight from orange to blue or a combination of the two. But should you choose to shimmy over to the Napoleon Allure (or

you misplaced the remote somewhere in the sofa cushions), a touch-screen control panel makes it easy to get the fire exactly how you want it. On a chilly night, it’s the perfect way to heat up the room without drastically increasing your electric bill. While the warmth of the flame sounds appealing now, you might question the necessity of such a fireplace in Texas. Put your hesitation to bed: You can enjoy this fireplace year-round thanks to optional heating functionality. If all you really want is to set the mood with a comforting glow, simply use your fireplace without the heat. And if you’re wondering where you’d enjoy the Napoleon Allure, there’s no need to knock down a wall or embark on a major remodeling project; this fireplace goes anywhere you choose. Use the included bracket to hang it on a living room or bedroom wall, or install it as a fully recessed unit in your wall. All you need to set this fireplace aglow is a standard outlet. A paintable cord cover ensures it will blend seamlessly in any room. However you opt to hang or display the unit, it’s a stunning alternative to a vented fireplace. You get all the charm and ambiance of a traditional fireplace without the need for firewood or a chimney. If you want to add sophistication and warmth to your home, just reconnect with an old flame in a new way: the Napoleon Allure.

Love Chicken? Just Whistle! FROM-SCRATCH SOULFUL COOKING AWAITS AT WHISTLE BRITCHES

A Whistle Britches 6110 Frankford Road Dallas 972.590.8991 WhistleBritchesChicken.com

34 • FEB 17

t Whistle Britches, it’s all about the chicken. When this Dallas happening hot spot debuted on the tony restaurant scene last spring, the owners had one thing in mind: serve the tastiest, juiciest and crunchiest bird in town. Their secret? Pickle-brined birds, farm-fresh ingredients and soulful cooking that leaves you wanting more. The farm-funky décor lends a fresh vibe and, when weather permits, outdoor seating is a fun option. With the belief that comfort food never goes out of style, the scratch kitchen is always baking fresh buttermilk biscuits and some of the best chicken sandwiches in town. Couple all that with a great local craft beer selection and inventive cocktails,

and you soon realize why the name Whistle Britches is so fitting. The restaurant likes to draw a lot of attention to itself and has no shame in doing so. Stop in for a taste and you’ll see why! Consider the menu for a moment. Brunch is served on Saturday morning and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features chicken, naturally, but consider the fact that you can order chicken tenders, chicken by the piece or an entire roasted bird. Be sure to try tender buttermilk melt-in-your-mouth biscuits and farm-fresh eggs served the way you like them best. We recommend the Chicken Benny, Whistle Britches’ take on an eggs benedict that features an open-faced biscuit, crispy chicken, pimento cheese and soft poached eggs topped with grain mustard hollandaise. We think any

southern grandma would give this dish her stamp of approval. Come back for lunch and try sandwiches, salads and sides. Order The City Boy salad with soft lettuces, bosc pears, smoked southern pecans and white cheddar drizzled with dried apricot-honey vinaigrette. Sandwiches vary from hearty fare to lighter bites. The Southern Belle features apricottarragon chicken salad, toasted cashews, Duke’s mayo and living sprouts on Hippie Health bread. Savory sides such as three-cheese Panko-topped macaroni and Homestead Mills white corn grits with smoked gouda and chives will take you back to your Southern roots—even if you hail from the Yankee side of the country. At dinner time, Whistle Britches really steps up to the plate. For starters, order a plate of sweet potato johnnycakes served with jalapeño cane syrup, honey butter and spiced pepitas. If you’re dining with a couple of friends, consider ordering The Whole Bird. Share 10 pieces of chicken, coleslaw, potato salad and two biscuits. You can try out over 16 craft beers or nearly a dozen on draft while you wait for your meal to be prepared just for you. And be sure to taste-test the housemade sauces on each table caddy—they’re sure to make your bird sing! Additional sandwiches and salads grace the dinner menu, so you can eat a light supper or opt for a more filling plate of deliciousness. And because no Southern family lets you leave the table without tasting dessert, we say save some room for Spiced Apple Pie or a heaping helping of S’more Custard. Last November, Chef Omar Flores received Eater Dallas’ Chef of the Year honors—a pretty spectacular feat since the restaurant had been open for only half a year. So we’re excited to see what’s on the horizon for such a new culinary venture. Located near the intersection of Preston and Frankford Roads, Whistle Britches is an easy drive from the Bush Turnpike, so it’s feasible to make the restaurant your favorite new destination for chicken made delicious.

Farm Fresh Fare Modern Market’s menu satisfies every diet

MODERN MARKET 3651 Justin Road, Suite 100 Flower Mound 469.312.5180 ModernMarket.com

We’ve counted on Modern Market for a great breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Sometimes on the same day!) You can never have too much of a good thing, especially if your 2017 goal is to eat better, even when dining out. At Modern Market, nutritious, farm-to-table foods are prepared with whole, simple ingredients—no unpronounceable additives or hidden fillers. If you’re curious about how your food is made, just go to ModernMarket.com and click on any menu item to see sourcing information and recipe details. And if you want to know calorie count or grams of protein for each meal, Modern Market prints these and other nutrition stats directly on your receipt. The transparency is refreshing, but you can’t feast on facts; you have to try the food. Let’s start with breakfast. Modern Market does the most important meal of the day right, offering up protein-packed breakfast plates, hearty egg sandwiches and whole-grain waffles. The Market Scramble is guaranteed to start your day out right. It’s prepared with cage-free eggs, fresh broccoli and caramelized onions with aged white cheddar melted on top. Breakfast potatoes and multigrain toast bring some hardiness to the plate. The waffles are also worthy of waking up early for. They’re perfectly fluffy and could easily stand alone, but they’re also excellent

dressed up with caramelized apple and pear compote, which is how we like to order them. Moving on to lunch and dinner, Modern Market serves an impressive array of salads. Choose the entrée size or half size (we always opt for the entrée as portions here are never excessive), and order straight off the menu or customize by adding extras such as flank steak, organic tofu or herb-roasted chicken. Try the Superfood—a hearty blend of spinach and kale topped with quinoa, feta, carrots, almonds, red grapes and champagne vinaigrette. When you just want to sink your teeth into something, Modern Market offers a range of substantial sandwiches and pizza. The Basil Chicken sandwich is particularly satisfying. Provolone, arugula, red onions, tomatoes and juicy roasted chicken breast are tucked inside a chewy ciabatta bun. Modern Market serves its sandwiches with a single pickle spear, though you can add a side item such as salad for a small upcharge. There’s enough on Modern Market’s menu to please every taste bud and meet nearly every dietary requirement—from paleo to vegan, gluten-free to low-cal. But because this local fare is made with farm-fresh foods, the menu changes seasonally. If there’s a menu item you love, get it before it’s gone. Or, just come in and try a new fresh favorite. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed. And be sure to bring along your minime—the kids’ menu is sure to please even the pickiest palate.

Experiencing New Orleans LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL IN THE BIG EASY

I

t takes more than a weekend to experience the culture and history of New Orleans. However, if you are planning a quick jaunt to The Big Easy, there are three districts you must see. Each with its own vibe, the French Quarter, the Garden District and the Arts District bring to the table new faces, new sights and new tastes.

The French Quarter One of the best ways to experience New Orleans is to stay like a local in the Quarter. Rent a room at a townhouse or carriage house; you may not experience any five-star amenities, but what the lodging lacks in down comforters and Wi-Fi is made up for in New Orleans charm. Choosing to stay in the French Quarter means the heart and soul of New Orleans is right outside your door. Aesthetically and socially diverse, the district is filled with Spanish architecture, a French market and American history. On any given Saturday, Jackson Square, named in honor of Andrew Jackson (the hero of the Battle of New

Orleans) teems with artists, musicians and even fortunetellers. This eclectic collection of peddlers is a must-see attraction in the Quarter, so prepare to share the sidewalks with plenty of other meandering visitors. Across from Jackson Square on Decatur Street, the original Café Du Monde has been serving coffee and chicory since 1862. No trip to the Quarter is complete without a stop for a coffee and beignet, a square French-style doughnut dusted with powdered sugar. The Café serves up these culinary delights 24 hours a day. Wander from Jackson Square to the French Market District in the lower French Quarter to experience a flea market and farmers market, among other shops and cafés. The streets and avenues of the Quarter come alive at night on Decatur Street, Rampart Street and, of course, Bourbon Street. However, if your weekend plans happen to fall at the end of February, you’re in for a real treat: Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday, which falls on February 28, is preceded by parades, parades and more parades. You know what that means: gold, green and purple flags plus a sea of beads NewOrleansCVB.com, CafeDuMonde.com

BOARDINGPASS nola Garden District Located southwest of the French Quarter, the Garden District is antebellum architecture at its finest. Rather than fraternize with peoples of European descent, who lived mainly in the Quarter, new American residents chose to settle in the Garden District in 1832. This neighborhood features stunning homes and landscaped gardens. The Italianate, Greek Revival and Victorianstyle homes set on large plots reflect the wealth these American settlers amassed thanks to cash crops such as cotton and sugar. Touring the neighborhood of the Garden District by foot or by streetcar is truly a cultural and historical experience. The intersection of Prytania Street and Washington Avenue is particularly well-known. Besides shops and cafés (you can never have too many in New Orleans), you’ll find a famous cemetery—Lafayette #1. This cemetery has been many a backdrop for film, literature and photography over the years. What’s the next thing to do after a famous cemetery tour within the Garden District? You’ll definitely want to eat lunch at Commander’s Palace Restaurant. A winner of six James Beard Foundation Awards, this New Orleans landmark is a prime destination for Haute Creole cuisine. Chef Tory McPhail’s policy of “dirt to plate within 100 miles” means guests will be treated to authentic fare made with local ingredients. NewOrleansCVB.com, CommandersPalace.com

Arts/Warehouse District To explore the modern and contemporary side of New Orleans—with a bit of history on the side—look no further than the Arts/Warehouse District located northeast of the Garden District in the Uptown area. This district, filled with more than enough art for the masses, was unified by the Arts District of New Orleans Association (ADNO) to give locals and visitors a chance to enjoy another side of The Big Easy. Established in the 1990s, ADNO brings art enthusiasts to the neighborhood through festivals, gallery shows and celebrations of the performing arts. The nonprofit organization has brought together 20 contemporary art galleries, three world-class museums presenting visual and performing arts, a rotating outdoor public sculpture collection, and numerous bars and restaurants. Galleries range from modern, which often feature mixed media works such as Callan Contemporary on Julia Street, to those showcasing the classics, such as Degas Gallery. After a few hours—or more—admiring paintings, drawings and sculptures, treat yourself to a latte or cortado at Mammoth Espresso on Baronne Street. Whether you come for the fun of the French Quarter, the history of the Garden District or the beauty of the Arts District, you can tailor your weekend trip to fit your vacation style. Raw honey is tasty and a great substitute for refined sugars. Enjoy it swirled into tea or drizzled over oatmeal.” Speaking of oatmeal, David Leuthold, non-perishable director of specialty foods at Central Market, recommends adding blueberries to your oatmeal in the morning to start your day off right. He explains that blueberries contain “high levels of antioxidants that fight against cancer and are a good source of vitamins C and K.” Another great option is kombucha, a fermented tea probiotic drink that originated in China. Leuthold described its many beneficial and healing properties, including cancer prevention, increased metabolism and increased energy level. Also, health enthusiasts should try cacao this year, as Leuthold mentioned that it can improve memory, increase bliss, reduce heart disease, help shed fat and boost immunity and energy. fm STYLE Magazine

ONE MOTHER’S FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION BECOMES HER MISSION

W

hen Brett Morgan O’Keefe died of an accidental drug overdose in 2010, his mother, Kathy O’Keefe, chose to turn her family’s tragedy into something positive. Every 14 minutes, someone in America dies from a drug overdose, and nearly one in four teens say they have misused or abused a prescription drug. O’Keefe founded Winning The Fight! (WTF) to help educate our community about substance use and addiction, as no family is immune to the epidemic. Recently, O’Keefe, executive director of WTF, received Flower Mound’s 2016 Outstanding Citizen of the Year award. We asked her to discuss her passion for helping others win the fight against addiction.

I AM MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT: sharing my story about Brett’s life so that others can learn from him. Brett left this life too early for my liking. Sharing his life and challenges with others gives him a voice of compassion and love. That is who he was before his disease took over. I share so others learn and maybe not judge. Maybe we can remove some of the stigma related to substance use, addiction and mental health issues. At least that is my hope and ultimate goal.

OUR COMMUNITY: is fabulous. There are people all over who will do anything to help each other. Recently the wife of a deployed military man reached out for help, and I saw so many people in this community step up. People are paying it forward at the drive-thru, lending tools and assistance to people they do not even know. That is what community is. We have to get out and meet our neighbors, but the reality is we all have so much in common. I often challenge adults to have a conversation with youth and vice versa. Daily I see that everyone just wants to be acknowledged and treated kindly. Kindness brings on smiles—what could be better than that?

OUR YOUTH WOULD BE WISE TO: slow down and learn how to communicate face to face. Due to technology, our youth have everything at their fingertips immediately. Life really does not work like that. If you go to Starbucks and observe a group of youth, they are all on their phones—they’re not really tuned into their friends. How will this be healthy as they become adults and move into the workplace where communicating face to face will be required?

I CONSIDER MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT: to be my family. We have been through many wonderful ups, a few too many challenges and then losing our son Brett to a drug overdose. Through it all, we continue to grow together, never blaming, always supporting and continually becoming gentler to each other. I am so very grateful for the life that God wanted for me. To be born in the United States, to my loving parents, the awesome gift of my husband and two beautiful, smart and witty boys. What a blessing!

THE BEST GIFT I EVER RECEIVED WAS: my parents paying for my college education. I often tell our youth that you can lose basically everything, but no one can ever take away your education. You may not even practice what you went to school for, but the determination and accomplishment of getting that degree is worth everything.

A TYPICAL DAY OFF FOR ME: is kind of laughable! The way I see it, if I am not working somehow on WTF to some degree, I feel that I am wasting my time. Don’t get me wrong; I still love working in the yard, playing with our pets, Lucy and Piper, and hanging out with my husband. But there is always time for the families who need WTF. That is why my phone is on 24/7. Never once have I regretted taking a phone call.

If you know someone who struggles with addiction or would like someone from WTF to speak to your school or group, reach out to WTF-WinningTheFight.org.

Paint by the Numbers

V

an Gogh and da Vinci certainly understood the value of a well-placed paint color. And decorators and designers have transformed rooms—and the lives of those who live in them—with a fresh coat of paint. But before you hand over that tiny paint chip and mix a gallon or more, do a little planning to ensure you get the color you’re dreaming of.

WE WENT TO LOCAL EXPERTS FOR ADVICE ON HOW TO CHOOSE A PAINT COLOR WHEN LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF HUES LOOM BEFORE US. For 2017, the overarching trend is lighter and brighter as people ditch the Old World look dominated by gold, red and tan in favor of gray, greige (warm gray) and complementary colors inspired by nature, such as blue, green and yellow. “The most popular color we sell is Revere Pewter [HC172],” says Robert Marshall, owner of Flower Mound Paint, a Benjamin Moore store. “It’s a very versatile, light gray with some warm undertones and really brings different fabrics and surfaces together nicely.” Marshall also suggests by Benjamin Moore: Stonington Gray HC-170 Annapolis Gray HC-176 Silent Night 1613 Winter Solstice 1605 Senora Gray 1530

For paint finishes, Marshall says the safe play for walls is eggshell—it’s durable, plays well with children and doesn’t scuff up easily. “Designers prefer matte because it has little to no reflection so the color is more true,” says Marshall, “but it really depends on who is living in the house.” On cabinets, doors and trim, pros prefer Benjamin Moore’s Satin Impervo, an oil-based enamel. But if someone in the home is sensitive to smells, chemicals or allergens, an equally good alternative is a product called Advance—a water-borne interior alkyd (hybrid) that provides a smooth durable finish of an oil base paint that cleans up with soap and water. For those who demand zero VOCs in their paint, Natura by Benjamin Moore fits the bill. It emits no odors and is great for rooms such as nurseries and children’s play rooms. Mary Joseph of Interior Solutions by Mary suggests exploring exterior paint colors even indoors. “These colors are meant to blend in well with nature— water, sand, plants, trees—so you can certainly use them inside your home,” she says. Joseph’s pick for good neutral hues by Sherwin Williams include: Repose Gray 7015 Gateway Gray 7644 Techno Gray 6170 Since grays can be tricky and cast off shades of green, blue or even yellow, Joseph suggests buying a sample size of a few paint colors and then painting two coats onto a half-sized poster board. Then you can tack up the posters on your walls and test the colors in varying degrees of sunlight. Purchase a quart or sample size at any paint store and see how a new paint color can transform your home.
