A Shout-Out to Dads Dads: We think you’re pretty wonderful. That’s why, in celebration of Father’s Day this month, Southlake Style is shining the spotlight on you. Although I don’t have personal experience as a dad, I can attest that I have a dad who is as much an influence in my life today as he was when I was growing up. My dad is a friend to everyone: his neighbors, colleagues, mail carrier. In fact, my sister and I used to roll our eyes when he’d strike up a conversation with someone. He could yak with anybody about anything, and we never knew how long the chitchat would go on. I’m not nearly as gregarious as my dad, but I’m struck by how much like him I’ve become … and still aspire to be. As I’m sure my dad and most dads would affirm, fatherhood is a big deal. In the great adventure of raising sons and daughters, fathers end up being so many things: teachers, coaches, wipers of noses (and sometimes tears), upholders of family values and dispensers of wisdom, among many other responsibilities. Dads aren’t off the hook when their children are grown, either. A poll on SouthlakeStyle.com revealed that nearly a third of readers turn to their father first when they need advice. In the spirit of celebrating dads and all they do, we caught up with some local men to get a glimpse into their lives as fathers. You’ll recognize the dads starting on page 27 for their careers, but it’s not just their jobs that make them notable. These men are on the frontlines of fatherhood every day, showing their kids what it’s like to be a remarkable dad. Considering all they do for their families, we think dads deserve some special treatment— not just a celebratory Sunday once a year. For ideas, check out our piece, “Where the Guys Go” for a closer look at the face of today’s well-groomed man. And for the latest in smart home technology, flip to our feature, “Intelligent Living.” Pampering Dad at home can be as easy as pushing a button—which, if you were like most kids, pushing Dad’s buttons happened to be your expertise. To all the great dads out there—here’s to you! Enjoy. Happy reading,

Q&A: Vesta Custom Homes
We also felt that many of the people previously involved could be successful if given the right opportunity. The homeowners we “adopted” have been very supportive, knowing this was not an easy transition and their financial risk prior to our involvement was very real. Q: How was the buyout of the previous builder structured? We didn’t buy the company; we did an asset purchase. The assets included all homes under construction and the home sites that were held in both Carillon and Granada. We’ve been busy ever since! We knew we had a lot of work to do to build a strong foundation for Vesta to prosper. Our first few months were about building out the right team and the right processes to deliver custom homes that our buyers would fall in love with. Meanwhile, we had vendors and subcontractors who were never paid by the previous owner. While it has been even harder than we expected to right the ship, we are really excited about the future.
Talking with James Hamilton with Vesta Custom Homes Local resident of 23 years, James Hamilton led a group of three investors who recently purchased a distressed home-builder focused on communities in Southlake and Westlake. They now have over 30 custom homes under construction with plans for many more. Q: What drew you to this opportunity of purchasing the previous builder and launching a new company? Carillon is currently my home and I’m building our next home in Granada. The team and I really like both neighborhoods. Carillon is the last master-planned community in Southlake, and Granada’s exclusivity and sophistication are major draws. Both are unique communities that are in high demand.
Q: What makes Vesta unique in the community? We offer our homeowners the ability to work closely with our in-house team from start to finish. It begins with a complimentary floorplan design meeting as well as a preliminary meeting with our decorating team. This process allows us to provide buyers with firm pricing and clear expectations. We also have a very seasoned team and a builder who is there every day to listen and provide answers. Rich Hudson and his group are true partners with our buyers. Rich has been building high-end custom homes for over 20 years. Q: What amenities are available in the neighborhood? Carillon offers wonderful amenities including ponds, walking trails, playgrounds, basketball courts and a community club house and pool. Granada is an exclusive gated community tucked away in the Town of Westlake. It is wooded and offers estate lots on which to build an executive home. It also gives the homeowner access to either Westlake Academy or Carroll ISD. Both communities are close to retail and restaurant developments, making them highly sought-after locations.

STRANGER TO STRANGER PAUL SIMON JUNE 3
It’s All About the Sound Paul Simon, one of the most talented songwriters of our time, wants listeners to notice it’s more about the sound than the lyrics in his 13th solo album, “Stranger to Stranger.” Produced by Simon and his longtime musical partner, Roy Halee, the album, which is Simon’s first since 2011, takes audiences on a “sonic adventure.” Seemingly inspired by the work of Harry Partch, a 20th century American composer who created custommade instruments to produce truly unique sounds, “Stranger to Stranger” uses tunes and beats that blend Italian electronic dance with African field recordings on such tracks as “The Werewolf” and “Street Angel.”
UNDER THE STARS DAN WHITE JUNE 14 Into the Great Wide Open Camping is a recreational activity both loved and loathed. Preferences aside, you’ll enjoy this take on what it means to sleep under the stars. In “Under the Stars: How America Fell in Love with Camping,” author Dan White takes readers on a journey through time. The book explores the question: When did our love affair with roughing it or glamping it begin? Not only looking at the tracks we have left as participants, White also brings to life the musings of some of history’s most notable authors. Emerson, Thoreau and Roosevelt have all penned their personal stories of the American Wilderness.
INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE IN THEATERS JUNE 24
Un-Welcome Back Fourth of July is right around the corner, and as with any event-based film, “Independence Day Resurgence” wants you to ask yourself, could this happen? The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster picks up 20 years after the original epic alien battle. Although Earth has become better equipped to deal with aliens, these creatures will always be more advanced, which becomes problematic when they return to our planet with vengeance. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch reprise their roles, and a new face, Jessie Usher (Starz “Survivor’s Remorse”) will play Will Smith’s character’s stepson—grown up and ready to fight for America’s global independence, once again.

ROADIES SHOWTIME JUNE 26
I’m With the Band Groupies they are not. These aren’t teenage girls just looking to hang out with the band. The stars of the new Showtime comedy series “Roadies” are a much more serious set of men and women who travel with the band across the United States in search of life, love and the pursuit of rock. With relationships that are often reckless, romantic and sometimes funny, the roadies form a bond that is nothing short of family. Luke Wilson (“Concussion”), Carla Gugino (“Wayward Pines”) and Luis Guzmán (“Code Black”) star as backstage workers in the series directed by Oscar-winner Cameron Crow.

SP IN THE SPOTLIGHT community BAND AIDE CONCERTS BENEFITTED CARROLL ISD MIDDLE SCHOOLS The showroom at Park Place Lexus Grapevine was recently transformed into a concert hall for an evening of music and fundraising. The luxury car dealership, along with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Class of 2015-16, hosted the Music is Magic event for Band Aide, a fundraising campaign to raise money for band instruments at Dawson and Carroll Middle School. “We were thrilled to host the bands and help in this worthy fundraising endeavor,” said Matt Woolsey, Park Place Lexus Grapevine general manager and Leadership Southlake member. The evening generated more than $6,700 through a silent auction and wine pull.
DRAGON WATER POLO TEAMS FINISHED SECOND IN STATE The Carroll boys’ and girls’ water polo teams were in action at Texas A&M University last month for the 45th annual TISCA Texas State High School Water Polo tournament. The teams played four games, advancing to the championship game before coming up just short of the state title. Both teams lost 8-4 in hardfought games and were declared state runners-up. The girls were the defending 2015 state champions, and this was the boys’ highest-ever finish at the state championship. SEONG, RAVI NAMED CSHS CLASS OF 2016 VALEDICTORIAN, SALUTATORIAN Carroll Senior High School declared Wongyeong Seong as valedictorian and Nikhil Ravi as salutatorian for the Class of 2016. Seong will attend Stanford University to study human biology. Ravi will study computer science at Duke University. Graduation took place Friday, June 3 at Dragon Stadium. Congratulations to Seong and Ravi on being named the valedictorian and salutatorian, and congratulations to the entire CSHS Class of 2016. DRAGONS COMMIT TO ADVANCING THEIR TALENTS ON SPRING SIGNING DAY Crowds of family and friends lined the halls of Carroll Senior High School in April to applaud the accomplishments of Dragon student athletes as they signed letters of intent. In all, 19 Dragons across seven sports made their college dreams come true at this highly anticipated event. “It’s an incredible celebration,” said Southlake Carroll Athletic Director Darren Allman. “There are a lot of victories throughout the year both academically and athletically at Carroll. Today, we’re here to celebrate the careers of 19 student athletes.” See the Southlake Carroll Spring Signing Class of 2016 at SouthlakeStyle.com.

YOUNG DRAGONS WROTE, DESIGNED AND ILLUSTRATED A BOOK The creativity of two students at Old Union Elementary is now in print for all to enjoy. Lydia Amstutz and Mateo Gutierrez, both age seven, wrote and illustrated the book, Mr. Pig and The Turkey On The Road. The book follows Mr. Pig and his adventures. The students have plans to create an entire series, with the next book, The History of Mr. Pig’s Family, already underway. Gutierrez is the main author and contributed some illustrations, and Amstutz is the main illustrator. After the students shared the book with the class, family members took it to the next level. Amstutz’s mother made several copies for the school, and the child’s grandmother obtained the ISBN number to have the book published. It’s available on Amazon in both English and bilingual (English and Spanish) versions. Gutierrez’s mother helped produce the Spanish version, Señor Cerdito. “They wrote an incredibly bright story,” said their second-grade teacher, Laura Hudgeons. “I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.” Visit SouthlakeStyle.com to see our Q&A with the students.

CARROLL SENIOR HIGH HOSTED INAUGURAL ARTS SIGNING DAY In May, Carroll Senior High School hosted a ceremony honoring 27 students looking to pursue a fine arts degree in college. For these students, the process is often rigorous. Those looking to move on to collegiate studies in their chosen discipline must complete a twostep process. First, they must be accepted into their university and go through a portfolio, interview or audition process to be accepted into their chosen fine arts program. Many students audition and interview for months as collegiate fine arts programs are often looking for the right students to fill specific roles or to be mentored by faculty with specific skills. Visit SouthlakeStyle.com for the full list of Carroll fine arts students who participated in Arts Signing Day.

DRAGONS TOOK PART IN CARROLL ISD’S NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK A spring thunderstorm didn’t keep Dragons from heading to Globe Life Park in Arlington for Carroll ISD’s Night at the Ballpark in April. The first 1,500 ticket purchasers received a Carroll-themed Texas Rangers baseball cap. Additionally, a portion of each ticket sold helped support the Carroll We Care Program, a teacher-appreciation program. Charlie the Dragon was there to cheer for the Rangers as they took on the Los Angeles Angels, and the Carroll Choir performed the National Anthem on the field. A post-game fireworks show was a picture-perfect ending. WESTLAKE ACADEMY RECEIVED NATIONAL RANKINGS Westlake Academy (WA) has a new reason to celebrate: U.S. News and World Report ranked the school as one of the best high schools for 2016, nationally ranked at No. 58, No. 9 in Texas and No. 17 in charter schools nationwide. Westlake Academy continues to make The Washington Post Most Challenging High School list at No. 32 in the nation, rising four places for 2016. In addition, Westlake Academy students are excelling on state-mandated assessments. The Texas Education Agency awarded Westlake Academy seven Academic Distinction Designations based upon Westlake Academy’s 2014-2015 STAAR/EOC performance scores.
THE GODDARD SCHOOL HOSTED SIXTHANNUAL ROOT FOR EARTH CELEBRATION The Goddard School didn’t let Earth Day pass without any celebration; it hosted its sixth-annual Root for Earth festivities. The campaign was created to inspire the community to create a more sustainable, healthier and happier earth for generations to come. From April 18-22, children participated in Root for Earth, a weeklong celebration dedicated to learning about the environment. Children hosted a recycled fashion runway show and made both their fashions and the runway from recycled materials. Items such as recycled water bottles and infant formula containers were put to use to creatively teach youngsters about environmental responsibility.

ANNUAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT AT CMS RAISED FUNDS FOR ST. JUDE The St. Jude Classic (SJC), an annual three-on-three charity soccer tournament at Carroll Middle School (CMS), raised more than $1,500 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a leading children’s hospital pioneering research and treatments for kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. This is the largest amount the sixth-annual tournament has ever raised for the nonprofit. Approximately 65 students and faculty members at CMS hit the fields for some fun competition for a good cause. The event included not only 22 soccer games and a championship match, but also food and refreshments from SJC’s sponsors, Southlake Chick-fil-A and Rita’s Ice. “The money we raised will no doubt help children at St. Jude, but hopefully it will impact our students in a positive way so that they will continue to give and serve in the future,” says Zach Sellers, CMS coach, outdoor education teacher and founder of SJC.

13TH ANNUAL DAWSON DOUBLE DAY CELEBRATED TWINS If you think you were seeing double at Dawson Middle School (DMS), your eyes weren’t fooling you; the school had an astonishing 26 sets of twins this year. Last month, seventh-grade science teacher Sheryl Sides celebrated these twins through the 13th annual Dawson Double Day. At the event, the 26 sets of twins joined their seventh-grade peers for an Oprah-style show complete with discussion, twin trivia and a fun Q&A session. “I love watching our students observe the twins’ behavior, as they finish each other’s sentences, elaborate on what they love and hate about being twins, and expound on their mutual experiences as twins,” said Sides. “I’m fascinated with their fascination!” There are 19 sets of twins in seventh grade and seven sets in eighth grade. DMS hopes to break the Guinness world record for “the middle school with the most sets of twins in one academic year.” The last record was established in 2013, with the school on record having 25 sets of twins.

MALAI KITCHEN HIRED BREWMASTER TO OVERSEE HOUSE BEER PROGRAM It’s not just the food getting the buzz at Malai Kitchen—the Vietnamese/Thai-inspired restaurant has a new brewmaster at the helm: Matt Reynolds. Braden and Yasmin Wages, owners of Malai Kitchen, hired the 2011 University of North Texas graduate to oversee the restaurant’s house beer program. Reynolds previously worked as a mechanical and design engineer. In his free time, he immersed himself in Dallas’ burgeoning craft-beer scene and began honing the craft of home brewing. When presented with the opportunity to oversee Malai’s program, he took the leap, turning his passion into a full-time job. FOREST PARK SOUTHLAKE SAVED BY DALLAS METHODIST Dallas’ Methodist Health Center saved the physician-owned Forest Park Medical Center Southlake in a $17.6 million deal in April. The community was shocked to hear of the hospital’s bankruptcy, announced earlier this year. As Methodist was the only prospective buyer, Forest Park will not be placed into bankruptcy auction. Forest Park had not ceased operations through the bankruptcy, and was even recognized through accreditations as recently as mid-March. The facility was named seventh on a top-20 list of the most beautiful hospitals in the country in July 2015 by Soliant Health.

PARK VILLAGE’S SIP, SHOP & ROCK EVENT A FUN SUCCESS In April, Park Village celebrated its grand opening in a grand way: with its Sip, Shop & Rock event. More than 1,000 attendees, including Southlake Mayor Laura Hill, city council members and representatives of Excel Trust, which owns Park Village, joined in the fanfare. A ribbon-cutting at the center’s fountain officially commemorated Park Village’s grand opening. VIP ticketholders enjoyed complimentary food and drink samples, swag bags, giveaway opportunities and other special perks. Sales from VIP tickets raised $5,000 for the Miracle League of Southlake, an organization that provides opportunities for local children and young adults to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. Additionally, the Gin Blossoms played a free public concert at 7 p.m., rocking out with their top hits such as “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You.” ROBERT REDFORD’S SUNDANCE HOSTED GRAND OPENING IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE Sundance, a premier lifestyle retailer of women’s and men’s apparel, footwear, jewelry, accessories, art and home décor, kicked off its grand opening in Southlake Town Square with a philanthropic weekend celebration. Sundance CEO Matey Erdos said, “Our newest Sundance store at Southlake Town Square is truly a special place. fire chief MICHAEL STARR As fire chief for the City of Southlake, Michael Starr has a critical job. He’s on the frontlines for protecting our city, leading the 73 men and women who make up fire services. But make no mistake: Starr isn’t serious all the time. Raising three daughters and a son has taught him to look at life through a lighthearted lens. “As I get older, I have learned to loosen up and enjoy life, be silly and have fun as a family,” says Starr. His four children range in age from 22 to 13, and he also has a four-year-old grandson. Spending quality time with them and his wife, Melanie, is what puts a smile on his face. The family often vacations in places near and far, which is something Starr didn’t do when he was growing up. He makes it a point to create those travel memories with his children. “We love taking family trips,” he says. Some of their favorite vacations have included destinations such as Maui and Broken Bow, Idaho. This summer, Starr looks forward to exploring SeaWorld with his grandson. He recognizes that he has missed out on some holidays and special events on account of his career, but his children aren’t keeping track. They love him no matter what and will often send text messages to remind him. Starr says the most surprising aspect of fatherhood is “the unconditional love I have for my kids and that my kids have for me.” Father’s Day at the Starr household will likely involve much fanfare—and probably a few personal touches, too. “My wife has a tendency to go overboard on most holidays and occasions,” he says. And his children, though three of them are grown now, will likely shower him with personalized audio books, cards and photos. There’s just one stipulation when it comes to a celebration: No electronics. Starr doesn’t want any interruptions to family time. But if his kids want to text an “I love you, Dad,” he’ll allow it.
To Matt Miller, there’s nothing better than when he’s gathered around the dinner table with his wife, Colleen, and their three boys: Jake (16), Cole (13) and Reid (9). It’s a phone-free, TV-free zone; everyone is simply enjoying the meal and sharing stories from the day. And in a family of three boys, there’s bound to be a little silliness, too. “Everyone’s usually laughing and cutting up,” he says. “That’s my favorite time.” Miller, who is Carroll ISD’s assistant superintendent for administrative services, has always loved being around kids. It’s why he got into education more than 20 years ago. He’s learned from being a teacher, coach and administrator that kids need to be kids; they need time to play. Miller is cognizant of the high expectations placed on Dragons. But as long as his boys are trying their hardest, he’s proud of them. “[Collen and I] want them to be wellrounded kids, so all we ask is that they do their very best,” he says. “This will take them further in life.” Fatherhood and his career have taught Miller that children have different needs. While one child may be good with a pat on the back, another may want more hugs. By decoding each of his sons individually, he’s been able to create dad and son time that’s all the more memorable. When it comes to father/son bonding, Miller leans toward outdoor activities. He and his boys swim, ride bikes, grill burgers and play basketball together. And every summer, the family takes a trip to Montana, where Miller grew up and where his parents still reside. They’ll go hiking, fishing and play in the mountains. “It’s a great time to get away from phones and TVs and enjoy the outdoors,” he says. Back home, Miller has coached his sons’ various teams for the past 12 years. As hectic as it can often be, Miller wouldn’t replace it for anything—especially since his kids have wanted him as their coach. “They see others coach a certain way, and they like my style,” he says. “My style is not yelling and screaming. It’s encouraging, teaching and having fun. They like that and want me to coach them.” Another joy of fatherhood for Miller is helping his sons build their faith. The boys are actively involved in The Hills Church, where Colleen runs the kids’ worship service. Miller says watching his boys grow and evolve in their faith is one of the best parts about being a dad. “They’re becoming servant leaders. They have such huge hearts for others,” he says. “Seeing them grow into great young men has just been really cool.”

Dan Henry is upfront about his stance on ties for Father’s Day: He loves them. As chief meteorologist for FOX 4 News, ties are part of his regular wear-to-work attire. The Southlake weather expert is dad to three children: Logan (17), Brooke (16) and Carys (11). If his kids give him a tie this year, Henry’s not counting on them actually seeing him wear it. “They don’t get a big kick out of watching me on TV anymore,” he says. “But they like the fact that people respect me for what I do.” Though his work schedule doesn’t allow for a traditional family dinner, Henry makes the most of other opportunities to spend time with his wife, Kerry, and their children. He brings lunch to Carys, who’s a student at Walnut Grove Elementary, every week. And lately, he’s been meeting Kerry and his daughters for dinner in Las Colinas. “I love food, so the easiest way to my heart is a good meal,” he says. “Italian food is my favorite. And I love a good steak.” In fact, grilling out with his family is how he’d spend the ideal Father’s Day. They’d start the day at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where they’ve been longtime members, and then grill some steaks. Henry would round out the occasion by golfing with Logan or catching a movie with the family. “Either or,” he says, “depending on the weather.” Henry’s long-standing fascination with the weather has turned into a highly successful career—one in which he’s received numerous accolades, including five Emmys. But he’s quick to teach his kids that this success is the result of good old-fashioned hard work. “It’s important for my kids to learn the value of a dollar and know that [Kerry and I] made a lot of sacrifices to get where we are. It didn’t come easy,” he says. “I want my kids to know that hard work pays off. Just keep plugging away and good things will happen. Doors will open and you’ll find success.” His children are taking his message to heart. Logan has a part-time DJ business and Brooke babysits. They’re also active in church and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “We’re amazed at our kids’ faith at such young ages,” Henry says. He also makes a point to teach his children the importance of giving back. The family volunteers through GRACE and has gone on mission trips together. And when tornadoes devastated Oklahoma a few years ago, Henry and Logan assisted with relief efforts. Henry says, “I’ve always believed that good things come to people who treat others with respect and kindness.”

DAN MCDOWELL If you’re a P1, you already know Dan McDowell. But in case you don’t listen to The Ticket, a Dallas sports-talk radio station, he’s one of the hosts of BaD Radio. The midday program allows McDowell to talk sports as a career—and it also gives him tremendous flexibility as a father. While some parents head to work before the sun is up and arrive home with barely enough time to kiss their kids goodnight, McDowell’s schedule is different. He typically leaves his Southlake home mid-morning and returns home well before dinnertime, leaving plenty of family time with his wife, Kathy, and their two daughters: Eden (12) and Eva (14). “I have an awesome schedule that most people don’t have. A real guy with a real job has to be at work,” he jokes. Though you could classify McDowell as a local celeb (he has more than 48,000 Twitter followers), his daughters don’t think anything of it. “I don’t know if they’ve seen me do a radio show,” says McDowell. “I’m not positive they know exactly what I do.” While he’s a funny guy to listeners, to his daughters, he’s Dad. He’s the guy they hang out with on Sunday nights for their weekly “Star Trek” viewing, and he’s the one they swim with every day in the summer. That’s what McDowell loves most about fatherhood—just being with his girls. “When they were little, I’d crawl around the room with them,” he says. “I love just hanging out.” McDowell never expected he’d enjoy fatherhood so much. In fact, if his wife had said she didn’t want kids when they got married, he would have been on board with it. “I was never like, ‘I love kids and can’t wait to have kids,’” he says. “I still don’t really love kids. I just love two kids. I can’t imagine life without them.” With his daughters entering their teenage years, McDowell acknowledges the pace of life has picked up. There’s school, homework, sports and friends to juggle, but he doesn’t mind. “Every age they are seems to be my favorite,” he says. “I just really love this era. Living life is fun.”

pastor CLAYTON REED In Pastor Clayton Reed’s office at Southlake Baptist Church, two jars sit on his desk, each one containing colorful marbles. At the end of each week, Reed takes a marble from one jar and moves it to the other. Before he does this, though, Reed takes a moment to reflect and pray for his oldest son, Jack. The tradition he started nine years ago is a visual reminder of how many weeks remain until Jack goes to college. “It’s a Bible idea,” Reed says. “Scripture talks a lot about the firstborn child and the tone he sets for the family.” Seeing the marbles dwindling in the “weeks left” jar reminds Reed to make every moment count. The marbles are specifically for his oldest child, but Reed makes a point to invest time with all of his children: Jack, Josh, Eric, Matthew, Tyler, Abby and Jacob, who range in age from 18 to five. Every Saturday, he takes the boys out to lunch for guy time. It’s a chance for them to connect while giving his wife, Heather, a respite since she’s in tune with them all week. He also has regular “Daddy dates” with his only daughter, Abby. She’ll get dressed up, and Reed will treat her to a special meal, just the two of them. Saturdays tend to be busy with the boys’ sports schedules (they’re involved in football, track and wrestling), but Sundays are another story. “After church, we shut down and just exist together,” says Reed. “We eat, play or take naps. Sunday is a quiet day of worship, rest and reflection.” When reflecting on fatherhood from a lighthearted perspective, two things have surprised Reed more than anything: the lack of sleep and the amount of food his children consume. He and Heather have had a child every two years for 15 years straight. “All I want for Father’s Day is a nap,” he says, laughing. And when it comes to feeding his brood, it adds up fast. The Reeds go through two gallons of milk a day, and a restaurant tab easily tops $100. But despite the challenges and costs of raising seven children, Reed is a joyful father. “To wake up in the morning and know that my kids are on a good path going forward in life—that brings me incredible satisfaction,” he says. “I’m so excited about what’s going on in their lives now, and their potential in the future.”

MAKING YOUR HOME WORK FOR YOU
BY PAMELA HAMMONDS | 35
T
oday’s technology allows us to manage our households as efficiently as we conduct business on our mobile devices. Smart tablets and phones can keep our homes running smoothly, even when we’re thousands of miles away. Need to turn the thermostat down while you’re on vacation? Do that on the drive to the airport. Someone at your door? Answer as though you’re at home even when you’re on the beach. So what does it take to live more intelligently? We asked area homeowners and industry professionals for their advice. FROM DIY TO HIRING A PRO When Stephen Ellis sold his family home in Southlake last year, he left behind a pet project. He had designed and installed the majority of his smart home system that allowed the Ellis family to play music, control the television, adjust the lights and more with the touch of a button—or rather multiple buttons. “We had one remote for the family room, another for the media room, a separate app for music, another for lights,” Ellis says. Even though the system worked, it didn’t function efficiently. So, when the family built their new home, Ellis planned his smart home carefully, walked the house during construction, indicated where he wanted outlets, and hired a team of experts to handle the wiring and installation of a Savant system. While the Savant App won the Best New Product Award at the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) national convention in Dallas last year, it’s one of many options for controlling a smart home. Now the Ellis’ family home has a central media server so movies can be streamed from one central location, and all HVAC, lighting, window shades, music, and security cameras and recordings are managed through Savant. There is even an option for creating scenes—scenarios with custom settings. “I can hit a button for entertaining, and then Pandora plays music, the fireplace comes on, lights get dimmer, and shades come down,” says Ellis. “I love the fact that I can control everything from our iPad.” RAISING YOUR HOME’S IQ Even if your home has automated features, if they’re more than five years old, you might be surprised at what has changed. “The biggest game changer has been the ability to use a smart device and have full control of your home at your fingertips,” says Adrian Ballard, manager and system designer at Starpower in Southlake. “You can be halfway around the world and still control your security system, pool, audio/visual—anything you want to do.” For one Southlake family, it’s those times away from home that make them most appreciate their smart home’s features. “Every time we’ve gone on vacation, we’ve had moments where we didn’t know how to do anything,” says Jarrett Cadiz, laughing. “We act like complete idiots because we have to stop and think to turn on a light when we enter a room.” Cadiz, 23, installed his smart home system and outfitted it with motion sensors and other features that detect and remember his family’s lifestyle. And then, after deciding his home was still not ingenious enough, Cadiz designed technology to make the system more convenient, perceptive and reactive to how he and his parents live. “I created a layer to fill in the gaps and sit on top of existing systems so they’re not just programmed—they actually react to 36 • Jun 16
our activities,” says Cadiz. So revolutionary was his concept that he formed a company, BeeMatic, Inc., and dubbed it an “artificial intelligence platform.” For instance, when four o’clock rolls around, Cadiz gets a ping on his phone; his house is asking if it’s time to work out. “If I reply, ‘yes,’ the air conditioner turns down and the music turns up,” Cadiz says. He’s even programmed their Amazon Echo into the system. So if his mom is in the kitchen with messy hands, she can ask Alexa (the Echo’s voice service) to change the music without stopping to clean up to touch a button. And since the BeeMatic layer has learned the Cadiz family’s day-to-day routine, the house recognizes when it’s time for bed (with softer lighting and armed security) and when they’re out of town (with lights that dim at various intervals). But Cadiz can still override the system when needed. “I was away from home and trying to call my dad but he wouldn’t pick up,” Cadiz says. “He’s a little hard of hearing, so I muted the TV from my phone and tried again. He answered right away!” A GROWING INDUSTRY The global smart home market was valued at $20 billion in 2014 and is expected to reach $58 billion by 2020, according to Market and Markets, a worldwide market research firm. And while the industry is growing and evolving, smart home technology is also becoming more mainstream. Perhaps the biggest misconception, says Jeremy Beck, owner and president of Futurian Systems, is that only the über wealthy and luxury homeowners can afford a smart home. “Technology has come down in price,” Beck says, “and it’s completely scalable.” With locations in Southlake and Vail, Colorado, Beck, a Carroll grad, says families with smart homes can use their automated systems to save money and protect their assets. “You start with a primary controller that communicates with the other systems in the home,” Beck says. “You can adjust your climate when you’re away from home, start heating the hot tub on your way home, and provide enhanced security.” CEDIA reports that last year, home theaters and media rooms remained at the top of homeowners’ most popular projects, followed by multi-room audio and home automation and control. In 2010, the average cost of a home theater installation project was $16,400. In 2015, that average project more than doubled to $39,000. But that doesn’t mean home automation projects are limited to the very wealthy. According to CEDIA, the median home theater price systems integrators sold was just $16,666, and the median audio installation was $11,000. “Homeowners with a wide variety of budgets can turn to our members for help creating indoor and outdoor entertainment centers and to make their homes enjoyable, intelligent and more secure,” says Dave Pedigo, CEDIA’s senior director of Learning and Emerging Technologies. “They view these investments as not just ways to improve quality of life, but also to increase the value of their homes.” SO WHERE TO START? Both Beck and Ballard advise investing in an infrastructure that can handle the increased activity your smart devices will utilize. “People often make the assumption that their consumer grade SouthlakeStyle.com
network is enough and it’s not,” Beck says. “They’re designed to handle four or five devices and that’s it.” Your basic router just isn’t up to task. “If you have 50 devices in your home and you send a command to one, on an unmanaged network, every device is receiving that information,” says Ballard. “On a managed network, if you send a command to your lighting, it’s closed off so the security system doesn’t receive the ping, the AV doesn’t receive the ping. So the response is quicker.” Ballard likens a managed network over an unmanaged one to driving down LBJ Freeway at 10 p.m. versus rush hour. “Traffic just isn’t an issue,” he says. Unless you have a technologically savvy family member, like Jarrett Cadiz, who can ingeniously develop the intelligent system you’ve always dreamed of, hire a pro. CEDIA. org is a great place to find qualified, professional teams to install a smart home system. As the design installation association authority, CEDIA provides training for technicians and routinely acknowledges those companies that excel in the industry. Ask friends with systems about their automated home designers or technicians, check BBB ratings and read online reviews. You’ll also want to look for established companies that will be around to service and upgrade your system in the future. Then establish a budget and set priorities in case you can’t afford everything you want. “We can put the core pieces in place initially,” says Ballard, “and select an established Southlake STYLE Magazine
manufacturer so we can build on the infrastructure later on.” A visit to an installer’s showroom can allow you to view products, discuss options, ask questions and weigh pros and cons. If you have your home’s blueprints—especially if it’s fairly new or, better yet, under construction—those certainly help your technician ascertain the options. At the very least, bring photos of the rooms at various angles to determine equipment placement at your first meeting, Ballad suggests. “There’s been a push by manufacturers to encourage consumers to do their own installations,” says Beck. Wireless door locks and the Nest thermostat are two prime examples. “But an expert can design a roadmap so your system is configured correctly,” he adds. If your home has an outdated system, it might be possible to simply upgrade components as long as they are sound, the manufacturer is still in business, and a retrofit makes more sense than starting over. “We handle every client on a case-by-case basis,” says Ballard. Perhaps the only thing more frustrating than having to manually run your home’s equipment with multiple controllers is having an automated system that works inefficiently. “We’ve seen people try to save money by purchasing products off the web that are outdated or even used,” says Beck. Before investing in products you install or hiring professionals to design and install a system for you, be a smart homeowner and make informed choices. Your intelligent home should work for you—so you can relax and enjoy spending time with family and friends. Jun 16 • 37

e’ve all seen the commercials featuring couples and families snuggling in a backyard hammock. Looks cozy, right? You might think that, right up until your head hits the cushion on a Madera Teak Daybed from Pottery Barn. It’s a bed. It’s made for the outdoors. It’s an outdoor bed that gives hammocks a run for their money. Why settle for a cloth or rope cocoon when you can peacefully read a book, sip on a sweet iced tea or take a snooze without swaying back and forth? Adding the Madera Teak Daybed to your outdoor living space will upgrade your backyard oasis to luxury living. Crafted from premium Grade A teakwood with a natural sanded finish, the frame of the daybed is a sturdy piece of outdoor furniture made to withstand the elements. The quick-drying bed cushions feature removable, machine-washable covers, and the polyester canvas canopy and curtains are designed to repel water. So, while you probably won’t be utilizing your daybed during the occasional summer shower, it’s nice to know a little rain won’t damage the bed. There is also a small table, made from the same material as the frame, between the two cushions. Should you want to accessorize your daybed, just toss on some outdoor pillow from Pottery Barn—at an additional cost.
If your outdoor plans include reclining in the shade, catching up on some summer fiction, you’ll appreciate the upright positions of the cushion. However, if your eyes start getting heavy, lower the cushion enough to lie back and just enjoy the breeze. The cushions are adjustable up to four positions, including fully flat. Spending time with your main squeeze outdoors usually means sipping chardonnay or enjoying a refreshing club soda by the pool. Or, as mentioned previously, snuggling—and possibly sweating—in a hammock. Why give yourself only two options when a third is readily available? Cozy up to your significant other, side by side, to simply enjoy each other’s company in the shade of a canopy on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The daybed also serves as the perfect setting for a low-key date night. Enjoy dinner in “bed,” and pull the curtains closed a bit to keep pesky mosquitos, June bugs or your children away (temporarily of course). Your backyard living experience is what you make of it, and there are plenty of outdoor kitchen and living room set-ups available. So, why not incorporate the bedroom into your backyard oasis? The Madera Teak Daybed is both weather-friendly and aesthetically pleasing, and just might make your backyard the new favorite “room” of the house.

ustin Tondre’s schedule varies from week to week. Some days he’s behind the desk in his wealth management office in Southlake. Other times he’s traveling the United States, meeting with clients. While his weeks can be fairly harried and inconsistent, the one constant is his standing appointment at a local men’s grooming salon. Tondre, 35, balances the responsibilities of raising a family and running a business, so when he noticed his wife, Jessica, enjoyed her monthly appointments at a salon, he decided a regular escape would serve him well, too. He looked for a reprieve from a ringing phone, a quiet place to decompress and, if a mixed drink came along with the services, he was totally on board with that as well. AN INDUSTRY GROWS UP As a kid, Tondre went to the local barbershop with his dad, who was a police officer. “I appreciate now what that time away meant for him,” Tondre says. But as economies evolved, so did the tenor of the downtown barbershop. Depression eras saw many local shops close as men could no longer afford the luxury of a shave and a haircut. Eventually, retailers sold grooming kits so Dad and his sons could cut hair at home. Then the 1960s rolled around, and The Beatles-inspired mop-top was suddenly fashionable. Guys could go weeks without a haircut and no one would care—or notice. The 1970s ushered in the era of shopping mall unisex salons such as Fantastic Sams and Supercuts. Men getting haircuts would sit perched next to women enduring pungent perms and highlights, while barbering became almost nonexistent as stylists were issued broader cosmetology licenses. In the ’90s, chains such as Sport Clips and Great Clips (with Great Sports promotions tied to athletic events)
attempted to draw a more masculine clientele, but lacked the atmosphere of guys bonding under an aromatic cloud of cigar smoke and Brylcreem reminiscent of a previous generation. ANSWERING A CALL TO MEET A DEMAND Fast-forward to 2014, when total U.S. sales for the men’s personal care market hit $4.1 billion, making it one of the fastest-growing segments of the beauty industry, according to Mintel, a market-research firm. Ahead of this trend, area entrepreneurs sensed a desire for men to establish a ritual reminiscent of their fathers’ or grandfathers’ day and age. Lacking, they reasoned, was a place where men could escape from the daily grind for more than a quick haircut. “I went to one men’s grooming salon that got me in and out efficiently,” says Tondre, “but I didn’t find it relaxing. The receptionist was juggling two phones and drinks were self-serve.” When a friend recommended The Gent’s Place, Tondre made an appointment and was hooked. “For me, it’s become a moment—a good hour—to not think about work and relax,” he adds. Tondre gets a haircut every two weeks at The Gent’s Place, which was founded by Ben Davis in Frisco in 2008. He also stops in between services for an upkeep (typically a neck shave) when he feels it’s needed, which is covered in his membership. Another favorite among local guys is Boardroom Salon for Men, which was founded by Southlake resident Bruce Schultz. “We entered the market in 2004 after realizing a relaxed grooming experience for men was missing,” says Schultz. “Men typically get their hair cut every two to four weeks, and we felt they deserved a cool place for an experience rather than a commodity.” Schultz modeled his salons after 1920s gentlemen’s country clubs, with wood paneling and a pool table placed among the grooming stations. Even if guys can get all the specialized attention they demand at a fullservice unisex salon, sometimes they just want to hang out with other men. That’s why places around town, such as sports-themed Knockouts, are outfitting their salons for maximum masculine appeal with beers on tap and big screens tuned to the latest sporting event, so guys can feel at ease while getting a facial, a shoeshine or a hot wax hand treatment. Jeff Kissling, who founded Cowboy Up Men’s Salon in 2011, was a client at an upscale men’s salon for over a year until their choice in big band music propelled him out of retirement and into the men’s
grooming business. “I jokingly said, ‘If you don’t change the station, I’m going to go down the street and open my own salon,’ and I did,” Kissling says. His three area locations feature repurposed old barn wood, classic Belmont barber chairs and saddle-mounted stools for Dad’s little buddy. “Every service we provide can be done at each station,” explains Claire Settle, director of client experience at Cowboy Up. From a wash, wax, cut, shave or style, clients never have to leave the comfort of their chairs once they settle in. THE FACE OF TODAY’S WELL-GROOMED GUY Now it’s not only acceptable to be concerned about your appearance, it’s expected—whether you’re a Baby Boomer or hail from Gen X, Y or Z. And even if you prefer the I-justrolled-out-of-bed look, we can bet it took some time, product and grooming to achieve it. “Young men are growing up with an expanded beauty industry that includes them,” says Dr. Kristen Barber, assistant professor of sociology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and author of Styling Masculinity: Gender, Class, and Inequality in the Men’s Grooming Industry. “And so it is less surprising to see young men invested in the sorts of clothes they buy, the cologne they wear, and the hair products they use. But Baby Boomers are not aging without a fight, and this is true for men, not just women.” Jenae McCrossen, a stylist at Finley’s Barber Shop, believes the male grooming industry experienced a resurgence along with men’s fashion. “Shows like Mad Men inspired a renewed sense of style,” she says. Finley’s, founded by Austin barber Scott Finley, has two locations in the Metroplex— Plano and Southlake. “Older gentlemen remember going to the barber shop for camaraderie and now enjoy coming to Finley’s for the interaction with stylists alongside young professionals. We really cater to a diverse group.” The world of men’s grooming has evolved over the decades—almost as much as men’s hairstyles themselves. Men these days aren’t interested in a quick, impersonal haircut; they recognize the value in treating themselves, whether it’s with a hand wax treatment or a shoeshine. And the market is listening. There are plenty of places that give guys exactly what they want: a hand-tailored experience to go along with their haircut.
MAKING THE CUT The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that in 2015, men accounted for 10 percent of all cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., with liposuction being their procedure of choice. The number of cosmetic procedures performed among men has increased more than 325 percent from 1997. Whether to stay competitive in the job market, attempt to stave off aging or a realization that women aren’t the only ones concerned about looking good, obviously men are making an investment in their looks.
While men may love the way their women look and smell, guys demand products and services tailored to them—and they should. A man’s skin is about 25 percent thicker, contains a higher collagen density, and has a rougher texture and larger pores than his female counterpart. A man’s higher sebum levels also make him more prone to develop acne, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly scalp). It’s no surprise that entrepreneurs across Texas have developed men’s grooming products to satisfy the discriminating tastes of their peers. Here are a few to try: DOC ELLIOTT Founded in Austin, Doc Elliott’s natural, petroleumfree products include pomade, beard oils, moustache wax, and more. Inspired by the contrasting aesthetics of vintage apothecary and modern refinement, Doc Elliott products are hand-crafted in small batches and then carefully cultivated to nourish and protect your hairstyle, bountiful beard and meticulous mustache. DocElliottGrooming.com TEXAS BEARD COMPANY Who says today’s young men are failing to launch? These guys sure have been industrious! Texas Beard Company was founded in 2014 by three bearded 20-somethings (and one clean-shaven buddy who happened to be good at technology). About forty-five million Americans diet each year and Americans spend approximately one to $2 billion a year on weight loss programs. It is believed that consumers spend about $30 billion per year trying to lose weight or prevent weight gain, and 55% of Americans are actively trying to maintain or lose weight. LAW of the Land LAW Restaurant offers the definitive statement on Texas cuisine.

here’s a new restaurant in town, and it has a message: It’s time for Texas food to get back to its roots, y’all. Newly opened in April, LAW Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas is an acronym for land, air and water. Here you’ll find fresh meats, poultry and seafood from local ranches, farms and fisheries. Nothing is flown in from other states—it’s just authentic Texas food for hungry Texans. LAW is the resort’s new signature restaurant, replacing Café on the Green. Touted as a “bold taste of Texas using the finest ingredients sourced from the Lone Star State,” the restaurant features a charming and robust menu. But don’t expect standard chicken-fried steak and barbecue. Instead, think inventive dishes with Texas flavor and flair. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (as any good hotel restaurant should be), along with a
Sunday brunch, LAW offers fare from Texas French Toast (blackberries, agave syrup and spiced pecans) to Stuffed Quail (served with a chorizo cornbread waffle and barbecue glaze) and Tomahawk Steak (a massive bonein ribeye for two). Chef de Cuisine Jonathan Rivera is at the helm at LAW. He’s been with the Four Seasons since 2003, and he’s committed to keeping the menu true to Texas. “Our state has such amazing farmers, ranchers and fisherman. It’s our job to keep the integrity of the ingredients and pay respect to their hard work and dedication,” he says. “That’s what makes us LAW.” We ventured to the rolling hills of the Las Colinas five-star golf resort to sample some of the menu items over lunch. When we entered the lobby and rounded the corner, it was clear: This place was all about Texas.

Whole Beer Can Chicken for Two

Everything was subtly sophisticated, from dark hardwood floors to elegant leather and suede throughout. It wasn’t just the food that got a revamp after Café on the Green was retired; the atmosphere was completely new, too, with Texasthemed art and rustic décor and furnishings. For Chef Rivera, it’s a welcome change. “People don’t want to feel stuffy when they eat,” he says. “I love the idea of eating a good meal in a relaxed environment.” We settled into a comfortable table overlooking the greens. (With a wall of windows, there’s not a bad seat in the house.) Our server was quick to greet us and present us with menus. After hearing a few enthusiastic recommendations, we ordered the Shiner Bock and Sweet Onion Soup as a starter. LAW’s rendition is definitely one to try. We dug our spoons into a thick layer of Brazos River smoked gouda, unearthing a swirl of rich, caramelized onions. Too many restaurants serve onion soup that’s really just a disappointing broth. Not this one. Each spoonful brimmed with oniony goodness. The soup was quite filling, but we proceeded to taste what else LAW had to offer. On the “air” side of the menu, we opted for the Beer Can Chicken Tacos, a dish that happens to be one of the chef’s personal favorites. The chicken was indeed moist and succulent, but at $19, this entrée was definitely on the pricier end for a few lunchtime tacos. However, we were thoroughly impressed with the $24 Yellow Fin Tuna Sandwich. This bite from the “water” section of the menu consisted of a massive piece of seared tuna tucked inside a wholewheat bun with arugula, a fried green tomato and zesty jalapeño mayo. Accompanied by a side of crispy sweet potato fries, the dish was filling and delicious. We could finish only half. We washed down our meals with glasses of water, but the wine program at LAW is also worth noting. The extensive list pays homage to the Lone Star State, including standouts such as Duchman vermentino and Becker Vineyards merlot. There’s also a nice selection of cocktails, including the Zone of Truth, a mix of two types of Patrón, passion fruit, lemon and red pepper. Since it was a workday, though, we skipped the midday drink and ordered dessert instead. A halfdozen treats tempted us, but we settled on the Texas Bread Pudding. This warm, custardy confection was a sweet ode to Texas, all topped off with a drizzle of bourbon caramel sauce. Overall, the restaurant is the perfect balance of two things Texas treasures the most: food and hospitality. But don’t just take our word for it—head to LAW and order your favorites.

Italian Nachos
A Fusion of Flavors DeVivo Bros. Latin Fusion lives up to its name. Eclectic is one way to describe DeVivo Bros. Latin Fusion. The restaurant, a spinoff of Keller’s highly popular DeVivo Bros. Eatery, has a little bit of everything on its menu: tacos, pasta and something called a Frijoles and Chorizo Pizza. Enticed? Many people are, which is why the restaurant is quickly becoming one of the city’s must-visit eateries. When brothers John and Ralph DeVivo opened the restaurant, they set out to combine Italian and Latin (essentially Mexican and Cuban) cuisines in a way that hadn’t been done before. The menu, which includes options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is exciting and diverse. You’ll find classics from each culture (Fettuccini Alfredo and Barbacoa Tacos, for example) as well as modern adaptations such as Guajillo Chicken (chicken breast roasted in an 800-degree pizza oven, topped with house-made guajillo sauce and served with spaghetti).

The menu also includes all-American dishes such as pancakes and eggs and an Angus beef cheeseburger. But when you’re at a Latin fusion place, we suggest skipping the familiar standbys and embracing the fusion full-on. We dropped by for a weekday lunch and felt compelled to sample an undeniably fusion-y dish: the Italian Nachos. What arrived at our table was a curious compilation of crispy chips, mozzarella cheese, seasoned white beans, black olives, green onions, spicy Italian sausage and jalapeño. We enjoyed the merging of flavors and textures not typically experienced together. Italian sausage on a chip? It’s mighty good. The lunch specials are smartly portioned and priced. We ordered two street tacos with a chicken tortilla soup for $8. Served piping hot, the soup was artfully adorned with a nest of thin, crispy tortilla strips and a hearty avocado slice. Two ultrasoft corn tortillas, piled high with chicken, were served with all the necessary taco accompaniments: lime wedges, jalapeños, chopped and grilled onions, cilantro and two salsas in varying degrees of spiciness. While the restaurant’s location has certainly been a revolving door of taco shops, pizzerias and fondue places over the years, DeVivo Bros. Latin Fusion feels right at home. The restaurant is welcoming and comfortable from the moment you pull open the iron doors. And you just might see the restaurant’s namesakes when you’re enjoying your meal; when they’re not in the kitchen, John and Ralph love chatting with guests. If you’re wondering what Latin fusion is all about, go get a taste for yourself. The DeVivo brothers are using their culinary prowess to put creative twists on familiar favorites. The result is something truly original … and a welcome addition to Southlake.

Wellness Shots
Veg Out Stay cool (and get your daily dose of fruits and veggies) at The Juice Bar. Want to get your fruits and vegetables in, but don’t want to sit down for a salad? We get it. We don’t like venturing away from the pool, either. There’s a solution for all you busy, summer-loving people: a healthy, ice-cold beverage from The Juice Bar. The new store nestled inside Park Village is a one-stop-shop for a healthy bite or sip this summer. While there are certainly other purveyors of nutritious beverages in the area, The Juice Bar is a little different; you can order a juice three ways. There’s Creative Juice (raw produce is sent through a centrifugal juicer while you wait), bottled cold-pressed juice (fruits and veggies are ground and then pressed with one to two tons of pressure) and Fruice, an icy version of a pressed juice. (This one sounds like a treat when the temperature hits triple digits.) Behind the scenes at The Juice Bar is Heidi Lane, a former chef. “I don’t make a recipe official until it’s perfect,” says Lane. “My partner, Tom Hennings, and I both come from the food world, so we
THE JUICE BAR 1161 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.421.4334
know how to make sure that everything you order is consistent and served quickly.” Despite the dozens of colorful options, the process is simple. You grab a bottled juice, or watch as all the fresh produce is juiced or blended in front of you. With fun names like Day Tripper (almond milk, raw cacao, dates and banana), Pink Cadillac (grapefruit and mint) and We Got the Beet (carrot, apple, celery, beet and parsley), who wouldn’t want to drink up? We opted for Skinny Greens, an emerald concoction of cucumber, green apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger. A dash of cayenne added some nice spiciness. For a buck or two extra, you can also add a shot or boost to your beverage. Consider it a healthy way to fine-tune your drink, whether you’re looking to suppress your appetite or jolt your energy. If you want to cleanse, The Juice Bar offers three different options depending on how many juices you want (and how much you’re willing to spend). When you want to sink a spoon into something, try one of The Juice Bar’s bowls: acai, pitaya or yogurt. Three new bowls are debuting this summer, along with a new line of coffee drinks. While $8 for a juice (and $10 for a bowl) may feel like a splurge, keep in mind all the goodness you get in return. You’re simultaneously supercharging your health without missing a moment this summer. We’ll drink to that!

IAN MACLEAN, PRESIDENT OF HIGHLAND LANDSCAPING, SHARES HOW TO KEEP YOUR LAWN AND GARDEN LOVELY ALL YEAR LONG. Scorching heat and water restrictions: Two things that stand in the way of a phenomenal lawn and garden this summer. Or do they? Ian MacLean is president of Highland Landscaping, the company behind some of Southlake’s most stunning displays of landscaping. He has good news for anyone wishing for a lush, green lawn: It’s absolutely a possibility. Q: Summer is in full swing. What should homeowners know about watering?
it again. There’s a lot of great information on the Save Southlake Water blog at CityofSouthlake.com.
A: It needs to be done less frequently with a focus on deeper waterings. Turn on each zone of your sprinkler system and watch as it waters the lawn. When you see water start to pool off, take note of the time—say seven or 10 minutes. This tells you when the soil in that area has become saturated at the surface. You can then program your sprinkler system to run according to that time and run it for several cycles within your watering day. This simulates a slow, soaking rain, and it will bring the most benefit to your lawn or landscape. It also encourages your lawn, shrubs and perennials to grow deeper roots.
Q: Any smart tips for keeping water bills down this summer? A: Get a rain-free sensor and smart controller. The sensor has a rain gauge built into it. If there’s a light rain, it’ll keep the system from running that day. If there’s a lot of rain, the sensor will hold the rain and won’t let the sprinkler run until it evaporates. Q: You’ve worked on residential and commercial projects for 14 years. What do you enjoy most about making the city picturesque?
Q: What’s your advice on the timing of watering? A: Observe your plants after you have a watering day. When you see the first signs of wilting, you know how long your lawn and landscape can go between waterings. You want to continue to stretch this time period. With some gradual finessing, you can encourage the plants to grow even deeper roots. When you have trained your landscape to grow deep roots, it will soak up all the water that is getting into the soil. Q: Is there anything most homeowners aren’t doing that they should be doing? A: Homeowners should check and program their sprinkler system four times a year. At the beginning of each season, run through your sprinkler system and check each zone. Almost all homeowners are surprised at the number of malfunctions they find. Also, many homeowners leave the same program on their sprinkler system all year long. You shouldn’t use the same program in March that you’d use in July. And last, homeowners should upgrade their irrigation technology. Many people still have their 1995 sprinkler controller on the wall. The technology has evolved drastically. Q: How can homeowners keep lawns green despite water restrictions? A: By putting water restrictions in place, it forces property owners to utilize their watering day to do long cycles or multiple cycles, and then wait a few days before they do
SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
A: We’re working on awakening the region to the use of native and adaptive plant species. Because this area is made up of many people who are transplants from other parts of the country, they naturally migrate to plants they’re familiar with. In our hot Texas climate, these plants require more water and maintenance. Native and adapted plant species require less maintenance and less water. They can pretty much survive with what they get naturally, and with just a little supplemental irrigation, they can thrive. For a long time, native plant species were viewed as unruly and wild, and we’re trying to change people’s thinking in light of the fact that everybody is looking for lower maintenance costs. Q: You were involved in the development of Brian R. Stebbins Memorial Park. Where did you draw inspiration and how does it feel to see the park complete? A: Highland Landscaping, Cooper and Stebbins and TBG Partners conceived the idea for the park. I personally made trips to five different regions of Texas to study native plants in their indigenous environments. It’s tremendously exciting. This park was undoubtedly the most prominent project we’ve done as a company in our 14-year history. It’s truly an opportunity to be at the leading edge of our industry. My brother and business partner, Jason MacLean, and I are excited to be part of something that’s a fixture in the community.

Fill Your Canteens AN ADVENTURE VACATION IS CALLING.
P
ack your paddles and lace up your boots; resort vacations are so last season. Poolside cabanas and beachfront villas are for the rest of the herd, right? Take the road—or river—less traveled this summer and embark on an adventure vacation. Hiking, biking and kayaking are just a few ways to sightsee without setting foot on tourist-laden soil.
If you are seeking an adventure-worthy vacation outside the United States, the blue coastal waters of New Zealand are perfect for kayaking. One of the most sought-after experiences in kayaking is traversing the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, located at Abel Tasman National Park in central New Zealand. Navigating the 38-mile track via kayak will take you approximately eight hours and can be divided into three legs. You’ll embark from Marahau and end at Onetahuti, first stopping at Anchorage and then at Bark Bay. Since it is not a round-trip excursion, you’ll need to arrange transportation back to Marahau. It is highly recommended that you book a guided kayak tour and reserve your intended campsites/huts ahead of time. Actually, it is required that you have camping permits in place before you set out. This can all be done upon arrival at the national park when you pay your fees to stay the night. However, if you only plan to kayak the coast for the day, there are no fees. You’ll want to disembark from your kayak at times throughout the trek for up-close appreciation of the native flora and wildlife. Snorkels and goggles should be your exploration gear of choice, as most of the action is

just below the coastal water’s surface. From periwinkles and pink algae to sea urchins and live bryozoans (these help make coral reefs), all sorts of plants and creatures live in distinct bands along the coast. Mountain Biking in Brevard Take a look at the natural wonders surrounding the community of Brevard, North Carolina—think mountains and waterfalls— and it’s easy to see how the small town gives you access to big adventures. The rugged terrains of Transylvania County (where Brevard is located) make for some pretty awesome mountain biking trails that range from easy to intermediate. The Bracken Mountain Trail is a four-mile intermediate loop starting at the base of Bracken Mountain. Bikers gain an elevation of more than 900 feet, and the trail can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to complete. There are also a number of state forests surrounding Brevard that offer more amazing mountain biking experiences, such as the DuPont Fawn Lake Trail (ninemile moderate loop in DuPont State Forest) or for experts, the 22mile Avery Creek/Black Mountain Loop in Pisgah National Forest. Now that you know where to spin your wheels, you should unsaddle and explore the nature of the forests along the way, and perhaps catch a glimpse or two of one of the 200 waterfalls in the Brevard area. Looking for indigenous wildlife? If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a famous Brevard white squirrel. BrevardNC.com
Hiking the Bend If thoughts of climbing mountains or trekking through the desert send shivers up your spine, then take your pick of climates within the Lone Star State borders to experience the ultimate in adventure vacations. And we say, if there’s hiking to be done in Texas, go Big Bend or go home. of Big Bend National Park (the 15th largest national park in the U.S.), the state park offers hiking and backpacking options for a variety of skill levels. We picked a trail suited for an expert hiker. The Rancherias Loop trail is a two-night, three-day camping and hiking experience that is 19 miles of true roughing it. The adventure starts 21 miles west of the city of Lajitas and loops around back to Highway 170 at the west Rancherias sign within the state park. Before you start the loop, you’ll need to check in at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center, located near Lajitas. This center serves as the eastern entrance to the state park. Once you’re checked in and you’ve paid your fees ($3-$5 per person), you’ll go through a hiking/backpacking/ camping orientation. This is an important step since you’ll be making your way through the Chihuahuan Desert along trails that are often not marked. There is a lot of climbing involved, but the views are well worth it. Stargazing at your campsite each night reminds you just how rewarding adventure vacations can be. TPWD.Texas.gov

Southern Style Darius Rucker brings his Charleston roots to Dallas.
G
exa Energy Pavilion. He may have transformed himself from pop/rock star to R&B crooner to country superstar, but don’t think Darius Rucker isn’t true to his roots. In fact, the Charlestonborn musician never left his hometown, now raising his three children there alongside his wife. It’s this commitment to his passion that makes Rucker such an endearing—and enduring—artist throughout his three-decade career. First expressing himself through music as lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker founded the band in 1986 while he was still a student at the University of South Carolina. The rock group stormed up the charts for years with hits you’re still singing along with, like “Only Wanna Be With You” and “Hold My Hand,” but Rucker still had a few tricks up his sleeve. Few would’ve guessed that the trick would be another slew of No. 1 hits as a solo country artist, but now, eight years after signing his first country album record deal, it’s hard to picture him any other way. Today he’s promoting his fourth solo country album on his “Good For a Good Time” tour, stopping by Gexa Energy Pavilion to kick up his boots and prove once again that country music is, and always has been, in his blood. So, what can you expect from the concert? Get ready for warm weather, cold brews and incredible hits like “Homegrown Honey,” “Wagon Wheel,” “History in the Making” and “Come Back Song,” along with a few flashes of Rucker’s signature smile. Sound “Alright” to you? We thought so.

The Land of Oz Awaits Follow Dorothy down the Yellow Brick Road in this new musical production.
B
ass Performance Hall. This timeless tale isn’t in Kansas anymore. Break out your best ruby slippers; the Wizard of Oz is coming to DFW, presented by the Performing Arts Fort Worth. This new production of the 1939 classic film has all the iconic moments you’ve grown to love over the years, including Toto, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the famous Yellow Brick Road, the munchkins, the Wizard, and of course, that awful Wicked Witch of the West. And the songs, oh yes, the songs like “Over the Rainbow,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and “If I Only Had a Brain.”
Southlake STYLE Magazine
Feel free to sing along! Fans of the timeless tale will certainly not be disappointed, but do expect a few surprises along the way that will delight all ages. New songs and choreography bring renewed energy to the story, as well as colorful costumes, breathtaking special effects and an all-star cast that will leave you remembering why there truly is no place like home. After a spring filled with our own rain, hail and dangerous storms, Dorothy’s journey certainly won’t feel too unfamiliar. Watch in awe (and breathe a sigh of relief that it’s just an illusion) as the Bass Performance Hall stage twists to life in a tornado-scene showstopper. We bet once the last curtain draws, you’ll wish you could click your heels and enjoy it all over again. DETAILS Date: June 7-12 Location: Bass Performance Hall
