service with a smile

When it comes to community service, Southlake is a place like no other. Whether you’re a young child learning the value of giving or a retiree with time and talent to spare, lending a helping hand is always a winning proposition. Local organizations of all sizes have done great things thanks to the collective power of our generous residents and the feel-good currency of community service hours.

Recognizing volunteer hours in such a way does entice do-gooders into action. Then calculating those hours into a dollar amount helps everyone recognize the true value of their contributions. According to the latest calculations by the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, the estimated value of a volunteer hour is $29.95.

If this is accurate, then Ken Stewart’s contributions to the city of Southlake are well in excess of six figures. The Air Force veteran was recently celebrated for reaching 4,000 hours of service to the city. To help put his level of generosity into perspective, the city recognizes its lifetime achievers starting at 500 hours of service.

What I appreciate most about Ken’s milestone achievement are the sentiments he shared with us: “I didn’t even know they had an award until I got it.” To me, these words show the humble nature of a true servant's heart and that the real value of community service is priceless.

We’re honored to share Ken’s story this month, and I propose we recognize future recipients with the Ken Stewart Lifetime Achievement Award.

Yours

Mike

JUDYPIE GRAPEVINE

Creating pie is an art at JudyPie, not a task. Since 2016, Judy Balunda has served her community hearty slices and whole pies in more than 16 flavors. Grow ing up, pies were a regular family tradition, and Judy still believes baking pies bring people together. This all comes to fruition during her infamous Bingo nights. On select Mondays starting at 6:30 p.m., the family-fa vorite shop offers customers a choice of either chick en pot pie or shepherd’s pie, salad, rolls and a slice of sweet dessert with their bingo card.

A retired special education teacher, Judy contin ues to share her gifts with the community. But if you ask her custom ers, they prefer her Key Lime pies the most.

“This is my busiest time of the year,” Judy exclaims. “I love seeing my shop filled with mountains of boxes.”

PINCH OF SALT PASTRIES SOUTHLAKE

Pinch Of Salt Pastries has been Southlake’s go-to place for gluten-free baked goods for the past six years. Maple Pumpkin Pie and Brown Butter Pecan Pie will hit the spot after turkey and mashed pota toes. Pinch Of Salt Pastries prides itself on the special dietary modifications for the nut-sensitive, vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, Paleo diet and more.

This lifestyle resonates with Pinch of Salt Pastries creator and owner Abby Dumont, who had to make her own dietary changes and thought the market was lacking tasty quality products. She has cracked the code on the agreeable convergence of satisfac tion and surprise when it comes to gluten-free baked goodies.

“I was determined to make it better than it had been,” Abby says. “I just got to work making recipes that were classic that my family had made for years and making them gluten-free.”

This local bakery partners with local coffee shops and farmer’s markets across the DFW area, where her baked goods with mindful ingredients are in high de mand.

EMPORIUM PIES FOUR DFW LOCATIONS INCLUDING DELIVERY

Started by two friends in 2011, the wildly-popular Deep Ellum bakery has been featured by “The Food Network,” “The Wall Street Journal” and other re nowned sources — and it only takes one bite to un derstand why.

Emporium’s pies take after the founding duo Me gan Wilkes and Mary Sparks as they create whimsically modern takes on classic favorites. Their aptly-named Drop Dead Gourdgeous flaunts a silky pumpkin cus tard atop a homemade gingerbread crust that will leave you pining for your childhood. Their wildly-pop ular Lord of the Pies was lauded as one of the 12 best pies in America by “Conde Nast Traveler.” This deep dish take on apple pie is made with tart and chopped apples, covered in house-made caramel and topped with crispy cinnamon streusel. Hey, you only live once.

Customers are also smitten with the gluten-free Smooth Operator, a French Silk Chocolate option with a pretzel crust. Meanwhile, their variation of a bourbon-pecan pie called the Drunken Nut is perfect for your favorite uncle as it pairs well with coffee or a dessert cocktail.

As Emporium’s notoriety has grown, so too has the business to three additional locations. Even with a shop in Fort Worth, one has to travel far from the suburbs to enjoy their delicious offerings. Here’s the best news yet — Emporium has local delivery even to Southlake. Looking to go even further? You can send an Emporium pie almost anywhere via the delivery service Goldbelly. Sharing George Dawson’s Story Southlake Middle School Teacher Nominated For Lone Star Emmy

If you ask Southlake middle school teacher Josh Ault, George Dawson’s amazing story should never be forgotten. At 98 years old, George learned to read and write for the first time and co-wrote his own book entitled “Life Is So Good” in 2000.

Now, thanks to Josh, George Dawson’s life story has also been nominated for a Lone Star Emmy Award by the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Teaching journalism and Texas history, Josh trav eled to Seattle to interview people who personally knew George. He interviewed Richard Glaubman, the coauthor of his book, KIRO-TV reporter Deborah Horne, who interviewed George herself, his granddaughter Mashelle and his great-grandson Christopher Irvin.

“I knew it was important to talk to those people who knew Dawson because eventually all of these people would be gone,” Josh says. “I wanted his story to be told by those who knew him.”

After Josh’s reporting was finished, it was reviewed by a panel and deemed worthy of a Lone Star Emmy nomi nation in the category of Short or Long Form Content on Texas Heritage. While he will have to wait until Nov. 12 to find out who the winner of this prestigious regional honor will be, Josh says the real win comes from keeping Daw son’s story top of mind.

“He was a simple and humble man, but his desire to learn how to read and write at the age of 98 continues to inspire,” Josh says. “I am glad I could do a small part in keeping George Dawson’s voice alive.”

Southlake Oktoberfest was a hit last month. From Oct. 14 to 16, over 100,000 people convened at Southlake Town Square for the 21st annual Oktoberfest. Attendants got to experience everything the annual fall festival had to offer, from German food and beer to stein hoisting competitions to wiener dog races. The Grammy Award-winning band Brave Combo was the headliner during the Sunday concert. And on the last day of the festival, the chamber hosted its first-ever “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” tournament, where 32 contestants competed for the top prize of an Xbox Series X.

CARROLL WATER POLO IS STATE-BOUND

The Carroll Water Polo team is off to a strong start in its first season as an official UIL sport. Last month, the Dragons took on Marcus at the regional competition to qualify for the state contest. By the end of the matchup, Carroll narrowly defeated Marcus 10-9 and earned their spot at the state tour nament on Oct. 29, where they competed against Richmond Foster and Clute Brazoswood in the state semifinals. Nine water polo athletes were also named All-Americans, including Xavier Flanagan, Griffin Lang, Eric Winkler, Sydney Rubin, Carter Smith, Jojo Walters, Ian Yu and Jordan and Kaitlyn Jiuliano.

CARROLL CROSS-COUNTRY IS STATE-BOUND

The Southlake Carroll boys and girls cross-country teams are going to state. After successfully defending their District 4-6A titles at Bob Jones Park, the cross-country teams trav eled to Lubbock last month to take on the top teams in the region. In the varsity boys race, Logan Cantu finished second overall with a time of 15:21, while Blake Bullard, Jude Alvarez, Robert Freeman, Caden Leonard, Zach Troutman and Tyler Ortiz followed from behind. Meanwhile, Ava Bush finished second overall on the girls' side with a time of 17:25, with Sylvia Schwedler, Audrey Dunn, Elizabeth Smits, Sarayu Veluri, Natalie Ng and Gabriella Tesoriero rounding out the girls’ competition. The Dragons now head to Round Rock on Nov. 5, where the boys will be looking to defend their title as state champs.

Even though she is just a sophomore, shining soccer star Kennedy Fuller announced her intention to commit to the University of North Carolina last month. Both “The Dallas Morning News’” and Gatorade’s Texas Player of the Year, Fuller served a pivotal role in the Lady Dragons’ state championship win earlier this year, achieving a hat trick and scoring three of the Dragons’ four goals. Fuller will join the ranks of USWNT greats Mia Hamm, Tobin Heath and Heather O’Reilly and suit up for the Tarheels after she graduates from high school a year early. “I knew I wanted to call UNC home the second I stepped on the campus,” Kennedy says via Twitter. “The history and the tradition of excellence of the UNC soccer program is second to none.”

Dragon students did a lot of good last month to help wipe out kids’ cancer. Through the nonprofit organization Dragons Give Back, students from both the Carroll High and Senior High campuses took on “outrageous charity” dares, powder fights and other extreme activities. Last month, Dragons Give Back teamed up with Allen High School to raise funds for Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer by partner ing up with local restaurants, shaving heads and even taping a student to the wall. A Merry Mantle Makeover

West Elm Comes To Southlake Just In Time For The Holidays

DETAILS

The Scandi Red Christmas Mantle

Prices: $15 to $100 WestElm.com

It’s beginning to look a lot like… that time of year when we cart dusty boxes from the attic and won der what will be broken, missing or mildewed this year. If these feelings are all too familiar, it might be time for a mantle makeover from Southlake’s brandnew West Elm store.

The popular modern furnishings outpost owned by Williams-Sonoma has tapped Scandinavian holiday de cor as on trend this season. Not only does its Scandi Red Christmas Mantle collection invoke snow, skiing and all things merry — it also provides a flurry of mix and matchable items to choose from.

Just like the living room itself, this mantle focuses on trees. Wooden lacquered trees ($40) and lighter paper trees ($15+) can be added to flocked “Bottlebrush” ver sions ($24+) to create your own fireplace forest.

Next, add a pop of crisp white marble from any one of their stocking holders in eye-catching golden-topped forms of a nutcracker, tree or reindeer ($45). Of course, what hangs from them should include their cotton, vel vet or felt stockings ($25 and up) in classic golds, reds and greens. Last but not least, the Winter Sports Skier Advent Calendar ($100) makes sure you stop to appreci ate your mantle every day.

Let’s Talk Turkey

It’s that time of year when our thoughts start turning to seasonal decorating, family gatherings, out of town guests and entertaining. If your current home just doesn’t cut it for any of the aforementioned reasons, you might consider listing it.

Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season can actually be an ideal time to offer your home for sale! Why?

• Consumers who shop for a home during the holidays are serious, motivated buyers.

• Typically there are fewer homes on the market during the holiday season. Translation: less competition for you!

• Homes “show” better when decorated for the holidays.

If you’d like to explore this idea further, please reach out. I’m always available to help you think through a listing strategy.

COMMUNITY CAPTAIN

Volunteers are the beating heart of Southlake. Every year, scores of volunteers keep the city going through thousands of community service hours. Whether they are restock ing shelves in the public library, serving lunches at the senior center, or helping out at special events and fundraisers, residents young and old continuously work behind the scenes to help make Southlake a great place to live.

An Air Force veteran and retired airline pilot, Ken Stewart is used to having others rely on him. This continues to be the case even after his retirement in 2008 because he joined Southlake’s volunteer program. As a volunteer, Ken found ways to show his community spirit through the Southlake DPS Citizens Academy, the Citizens On Pa trol and in his current role managing the shooting range at the DPS North Training Facility.

Ken stands out considerably amongst his fellow Lifetime Service Award honorees from the city of Southlake. While many of the city’s most charitable are recognized for hundreds of hours of dedicated service, Ken has logged more than 4,000 hours — and he’s still going strong.

“It could be more than that,” Ken chuck les. “I don’t always put all of my time in.”

A CAREER OF SERVICE

Even before his time serving Southlake, Ken always had a heart for others. After he and his wife Janie got married out of high school at the age of 19, they went straight into the workforce while juggling night classes at Arlington State College. While Janie began working as an office secretary, Ken immersed himself in grease work as a mechanic for a local aircraft corporation.

“I’ve always wanted to fly airplanes,” Ken recalls. “I got involved with some Navy pilots who took me under their wing, and they made me realize I could fly myself.”

After graduating college, Ken signed up for the military and became a tanker pilot for the Air Force. For seven years, he flew

recon support in California and Japan, refueling aircrafts and providing technical support wherever needed.

“We did a lot of travel and deployments — about two or three times a year to Okinawa,” he recalls. “I spent so much time away from my wife and family. It was a big growing experience for us both.”

Ken saw even more excitement when he was reas signed to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. There, he conducted airliner, freight and air-launched cruise missile tests for his research team. He even got called back into duty in the middle of the Gulf War to equip the military for Operation Desert Shield and Des ert Storm in 1991.

After 22 years in the Air Force, Ken transitioned to becoming a pilot for American Airlines, flying people out of DFW International Airport to New York and Los Angeles. Even though he was miles away from any Air Force base or research center, Ken felt fulfillment from his role in safely getting people to their destinations.

“In life, you see a lot of people always moving around,” he says. “I figured early on that I was going to try and be a stabilizing influence on anyone’s life. If there was one small way I could help them keep moving forward, it was worth it.”

CITIZEN ON PATROL

Ken flew for American Airlines until his retirement in 2008. After being busy nonstop for three decades, he finally had a moment to himself — and all he felt was restless.

“After I retired, my son told me I could now get my lawn chair and sit on the front porch,” he says. “That’s the last thing in the world I wanted to do.”

It wasn't long after that he learned about the city’s volunteer program. With his military background, Ken felt he could help Southlake’s police and fire depart ments the most.

“We always wanted to be part of the city — to do something where we could be of help,” Ken says of him self and his wife.

But before they could do anything, Ken and Janie first needed to go through the Citizens Academy, a 10-week course that educates participants on the inner workings of the police and fire departments. After he graduated, Ken’s first volunteer role was with the fire rehab team, going out on emergency calls with firefighters and en suring their safety and well-being.

“We retrofitted an old ambulance with water, soft drinks and snacks and responded to emergencies along with the firefighters,” Ken says. “When they come out and they’re all hot and sweaty, we would be there to give them wet towels, water and whatever else they needed.”

Even though he wasn’t putting out fires himself, Ken says he was still close to the action, at one point even witnessing a big fire on South White Chapel. Ken proved to be so reliable he eventually was named a vehicle in structor, helping train other volunteers to respond to their own calls.

“We would get called, drive out, set up our vehicle and be there to provide aid,” Ken says. “We wouldn’t break down and leave until the fire was completely out.”

But Ken didn’t just operate on the fire side — he also signed up for Citizens On Patrol, where he would patrol around neighborhoods and businesses in a retired po lice cruiser.

NOV 22 • 45SOUTHLAKE STYLE.COM

“You’re mainly there as a visible deterrent,” Ken says. “If there are people waiting to break into somewhere, if they see a car driving around, they’re less likely to hang around. You’re basically the eyes and ears of the police department.”

Far from an enforcement position, Ken and the rest of the Citizens On Patrol did more than just drive around town. If they noticed motorists having issues on the road, they stepped in to assist them with any issue they were experiencing.

“If you see a problem, you can stop and help whether they ran out of gas, have an issue with the engine or are dealing with a flat tire,” Ken says. “It’s a really fluid role in that regard.”

A RANGE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

After years of dedicated service between the fire rehab team and Citizens On Patrol, Ken’s greatest vol unteer opportunity came in 2014 when the city’s DPS North Training Facility opened. Back then, range master Mike Bedrich was short a volunteer and needed some one trustworthy to help manage the facility. As usual, Ken fit right in and got straight to work.

“The training environment makes me feel very much at home — because I’ve been part of it so much through out my life,” Ken says. “I just clicked with it.”

At the training facility, Ken's primary responsibility is to oversee target practices. Whether it involves setting up targets, changing the shooting distance or adjusting the lighting, Ken manages it all from his control booth,

simulating different scenarios such as nighttime, police sirens — even strobe lights.

“What I like so much about working here is that you see the results,” Ken says. “I like seeing things working the right way — people perfecting their craft, honing their skills. The small part that I play helps others be come a better officer.”

But Ken’s responsibilities don’t stop at the firing range. Whether his work involves repairs, maintenance or restocking supplies, Ken goes where he is needed, when he is needed.

“From sitting in a control room to going across to the other building and making coffee, Ken has a multitude of things that he does for us,” range master Bedrich says. “He will do anything he can for whoever he can. That’s just who he is.”

Ever-humble and modest, Ken values working behind the scenes largely unnoticed, even amongst new volun teers.

“One time we joked with the rookie class of the Citi zens Academy and told them ‘That’s Captain Stewart. Don’t make him mad, because if he has to come out onto this range, it’s going to be bad,’” range master Bedrich chuckles. “When he walked out onto the range, those poor kids looked like they were going to lose their minds.”

But his peers quickly learned to drop their guard and grow comfortable around Ken, especially when they saw his selfless spirit for serving others.

“There’s nobody better than Ken,” range master Bed rich says. “If we gotta be in early for some reason, he’ll ask ‘What time?’ If you ask him to stay late, he’ll say ‘ab solutely.’ Everything he does allows us to get other stuff done. Without him, we wouldn’t accomplish everything we need to do in a timely manner.”

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE

When Ken first signed up as a volunteer with the city 14 years ago, he never expected to be recognized for his hard work. Regardless, Ken received the Lifetime Ser vice Award over the summer for contributing over 4,000 community service hours — the most volunteer hours in the city, according to the human resources department.

“There aren't enough good things to say about Ken,” Community Initiatives Coordinator Valerie Snyder says. “He could be the equivalent of a full-time employee with how much he does around here.”

But as he emphasizes, he doesn’t do it for the recog nition.

“I didn’t even know they had an award until I got it,” Ken remarks.

Instead, Ken values the relationships he's made along the way — all of the hands he's shaken, the people met and the small ways he's helped make the city a better place. That's worth more to him than any award could ever be.

“Knowing that others are grateful and knowing that we’re not doing this in vain goes a long way,” Ken ex presses. “You don’t get involved in this way for the rec ognition. I’m not trying to set a record. I’m just trying to help out.”

There are also unobstructed views of the outdoor pool and patio through oversized steel and glass sliding doors.

A Hidden Barbecue Gem

Bar & Grill Finds A Home In Dallas’ Snider Plaza

Nestled between a men’s clothing store and a CVS Pharmacy in Snider Plaza, there’s a restaurant making pounds of delicious barbecue every day. Douglas Bar & Grill opened in the early days of summer, wowing guests with its fare and atmosphere.

“Our whole thesis was that there’s no barbecue in the neighborhood,” owner Doug Pickering says. “We wanted to take barbecue and add a fresh, new family-friendlyoriented restaurant and bar in Snider Plaza.”

Entering the finance world out of college, Doug turned to the culinary arts on a whim in 2013. Since then, he’s owned his own catering business and been in

volved in concepts like Ferris Wheelers Backyard & BBQ before all of that experience culminated in his own restaurant.

“It’s about two years in the making,” Doug says. “Having my own restaurant has been the end goal of me getting into this business.”

Walking into the restaurant, guests are welcomed by a rustic and cozy atmosphere, complemented with shades of brown, gray and gold. Douglas’ bar is made of deep, rich wood with TVs embedded into the wall behind the bar, with dozens of alcohol se lections on display, while the dining room has plen ty of comfortable booths and table seating.

54 • NOV 22 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE
Douglas
Douglas Bar & Grill 6818 Snider Plaza Dallas 214.205.5888 TheDouglasTX.com LOCALFLAVOR review

Diners may want to start with one of the establish ment’s decadent cocktails. The Zaza features Casamigos Blanco, lime juice and Topo Chico for a cocktail with some kick, while the sweet Love Bug showcases Codigo 1530 Rosa, grapefruit and pink salt with a sugar rim.

Douglas also has several wine and beer varieties at the ready, from prosecco and pinot noir to Mosaic IPA and Dallas Blonde.

Then it’s time to dig into the barbecue. Douglas’ Tex as wagyu brisket smoked for 18 hours over post oak and hickory wood is a can’t-miss. Meanwhile, the pork shoul der is smoked for 15 hours, then pulled and tossed in the restaurant’s house sauce. Meat fans can also indulge in the concept’s Akaushi beef sausage with jalapenos and cheddar cheese or half a rack of Duroc St. Louis-style ribs.

Guests who can’t decide on their barbecue selections have no reason to fret. The restaurant offers combos so diners can mix and match meats. Plus, they can be served on buns for a Texas-sized sandwich, whether it’s brisket grilled cheese, a BBQ Burger or a smoked turkey club.

“The recipes are different from what I did when cater ing because we’ve elevated them a little bit and are using higher-end meats,” Doug says.

When it comes to the sides, diners will have a hard time choosing what to pair with their barbecue. The mac and cheese features toasted panko bread crumbs and a smoked gouda crust, while the brisket pinto beans are made fresh with chopped brisket and barbecue sauce. And you can’t go wrong with the classic shoestring fries topped with the house spice mix and served with ketchup.

But Douglas Bar & Grill doesn’t just have barbecue. The concept caters to diners of all kinds, with dishes like smoked salmon, chicken and salads gracing its menus. Its wild-caught jumbo shrimp and pimento cheese appetizer, featuring sharp cheddar, red peppers and deep-fried sal tine crackers, are also hits among guests.

“You want to be able to offer a variety of cuisine to people because not everyone wants to eat barbecue every day,” Doug says. “We’re trying to fill that void.”

Whether you come for lunch or dinner, make a point to end the meal on a sweet note. Douglas serves up classic Southern desserts such as banana pudding with Nilla wa fers, fresh bananas and whipped cream, and Texas peach cobbler, which features central Texas peaches, oatmeal crisp and vanilla ice cream.

And be sure you don’t miss out on Sunday brunch. The restaurant puts its own delicious barbecue spin on everyday breakfast dishes. The white brisket biscuit is sliced pork belly, fried egg, pepper jack cheese, bacon jam and chimichurri on a biscuit, while the BBQ Benedict is a choice between wagyu brisket or pulled pork on an Eng lish muffin with a 63.5-degree Fahrenheit egg, spring on ion and smoked hollandaise.

“We want to be a good neighborhood bar [and] restau rant where people can come have cocktails at happy hour or come for date night or bring the family,” Doug says.

Don’t Worry, Eat Happy Every Fresh Bite Is A New Adventure At Mendocino Farms

At Mendocino Farms, there’s just one rule — “Eat Happy.” The slogan permeates every aspect of the healthy fast-casual res taurant, which has locations across California and Texas and recently opening two new restaurants in Dallas' West Village and Preston Hollow.

“We really have an interesting niche that we fill that’s in between fast food and full-service,” marketing vice president Riki Swindler says. “The ingredients that we use and the inno vative and creative combinations of our food is what makes it more culinary and chef-driven.”

Guests who visit Mendocino Farms can expect a twist of fun with every healthy bite. From sandwiches and salads to soups and bowls, every forkful is delicious.

“We like to call it approachably adventurous food,” Riki says. “It’s stuff that feels familiar, but we include ingredients that are new or different than you normally see.”

Guests will love Mendocino Farms’ refreshing lemonade, which ranges in flavors from traditional and strawberry to spiced apple and beet ginger lemonade. When it’s time to dive into the salads, diners will have a bevy of fresh options awaiting them. The most popular choice is the hearty avoca do and quinoa salad, which features housemade superfood crunchies and succotash made with roasted corn, jicama and cotija cheese, while the pink lady beets and goat cheese sal ad provides a sweeter alternative.

Sandwiches are also a big part of Mendocino Farms. A must-try is the “Not So Fried'' chicken sandwich, which fea tures shaved roasted chicken breast topped with Mendo’s krispies, herb aioli, mustard pickle slaw, tomatoes and pickled red onions on toasted ciabatta, served with a choice of mus tard barbecue sauce or mustard pickle remoulade. Another chicken option is the sweet heat crispy Thai chicken sand wich, which puts air-fried crispy chicken tenders, Thai basil slaw, pickled daikon and carrots, sweet chili sauce, sriracha mayo and fried shallots on a toasted sesame bun.

You won’t want to pass on the bowls either, which include hearty options such as chimichurri steak and shishitos or smoky chicken elote. The restaurant’s sides include delec table options like the Oaxacan potato salad, a creamy potato salad with roasted corn, cotija cheese, green onion, cilantro and a hint of chiles, or the spicy curried couscous with roast ed cauliflower, carrots and Mendo’s signature spice mix.

So whether you stop in for a salad, sandwich, bowl or a combination of all three, you’ll most likely leave Mendocino Farms happier than when you arrived.

“There’s nothing more powerful than to see the brand, the food, the people and the store resonate with new communi ties,” Riki says.

A Toast To Fine Wine Boutique Bottles And Experiences Await You At Roots & Water

If you’re a wine connoisseur that appreciates all types of bottles from California to Spain to Italy, you’d normally have to venture out to Dallas to sample some of the rarer varieties. But now you only need to drive to Kimball Park in Southlake thanks to Roots & Water.

Originally established in Dallas in 2016, Roots & Water is an exclusive wine club offering several unique experi ences for its members. From their own private locker that can hold up to 24 bottles to wine tastings in the private clubhouse, general manager Blake Maso says members feel the benefits almost immediately.

“It’s a country club for wine collectors,” Blake says. “A lot of these bottles we are opening [cost as much as] $250 to $1,200 a bottle. You get the worth of your membership dues pretty quickly.”

Thankfully, those who aren’t exclusive members don’t have to miss out on all of Roots & Water’s offerings. Next to the club is the retail store, which offers all of its bou tique wine bottles for sale to the public.

Don’t mistake this shop for your standard liquor store. The shining star of this high-end retailer is its vast wine collection, which includes everything from 10-year-old California Cabernets to vintage bottle selections as old as the 1990s.

“You’d typically have to go on a waitlist to even get the chance to be offered boutique bottles like these,” Blake says. “We have something for everybody, whether you’re looking to buy a $500 or $5,000 bottle.”

And if you need help making a selection, Roots & Wa ter has the expert you need. Working as the wine director for Pappa Bros. Steakhouse for the past 15 years, Barbara Werley is the 35th person and only the fourth woman in America to earn the title of Master Sommelier, which is the highest designation a service professional can earn. Combining her expertise with the thorough wine collec tion, Roots & Water has the recipe to elevate Southlake’s wine scene.

“The big emphasis is on community,” Blake says. “We want people to open one or two of their bottles, share them with each other and develop conversations and rela tionships through their shared love of wine.”

Check In At ‘Hotel California’ The Eagles Are Bringing Their Iconic Hits To Fort Worth

Fifty years ago, an unknown country rock group released their self-titled debut album. It went Platinum, garnered two Top 20 hits and trans formed rock ‘n’ roll forever. The Eagles are con sidered one of the greatest bands of all time.

Now made up of Don Henley on the drums, Joe Walsh on guitar, Timothy B. Schmit on guitar and har monica and Vince Gill on guitar, the Eagles recently extended their Hotel California 2022 tour and are com ing to Dickies Arena this month. This one-of-a-kind show will include a special performance of the 1976 “Hotel California” performed in its entirety with an accompanying orchestra. Forget vinyls, cassette tapes, CDs and streaming — there’s no greater way to enjoy this two-time Grammy Award-winning album than by experiencing it live.

After their debut in 1972, the Eagles’ fame soared quickly when they released their first Billboard 200 No. 1 album with 1975’s “One Of These Nights.” Their single “Lyin’ Eyes” even earned the band their first Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Then in 1976, “Hotel California” became the third bestselling album in U.S. history, was certified 26 times Platinum by the RIAA and won even more Grammys for the title track and “New Kid In Town.” In total, the Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, had six No. 1 albums and topped the singles charts five times. They were even inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received Kennedy Center Honors.

Welcome to Hotel California, where the vibes are good, the people are phenomenal and the Eagles’ music can be felt in your soul. You can never leave, but why would you want to?

Routed In Southlake

76092-9998. That is the exact zip code where Dede Gouge has worked for the past 31 years as a Southlake Postal Service mail carrier. As she gears up for another busy holiday, this seasoned professional shares some fond memories and tips on delivering cards and packages door to door.

I LANDED THE JOB OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL… after taking the required test. As a teenager, I thought I might enjoy being a mail carrier because I love being outside and I'm a people person. It took two years to get notified that I was eligible for hire. I almost forgot I even took the test.

I REMEMBER WHEN SOUTHLAKE BOULEVARD… was a two-lane road, and that was scary trying to deliver mail on that route. We were growing so fast, it was hard to keep up — and the routes were huge. We also had our own vehicles then and had to maintain them ourselves.

EFFICIENCY HAD IMPROVED… since I started. Back then, the mail came out of order. Now, the letters, bundled catalogs and magazines come in order, which means we can work faster and handle more mail per household. Now the pack ages have scans on them so they can be tracked to find them easily. Back then, we had many more deliveries.

MY CUSTOMERS ARE… like my extended family. I really enjoy the camaraderie of my customers. My package deliveries are still to the front door, not at a cluster of mailboxes.

ONE DAY I PULLED INTO A NEIGHBORHOOD… and a group of homes had put signs and notes out by the mailboxes to tell me how much they appreciated me. It was so heartwarming! They always think about me and leave me treats and drinks. They leave me notes and give me plants or fruits and vegetables from their gardens. My yard is full of memories. For a lot of them, I have been their carrier for 20-plus years.

MY FAVORITE PART OF THE DAY… is being on the street as soon as the mail is up. My day begins between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. I like to ensure my customers are taken care of and see how things

are going in their lives. I like to keep up with their family's new additions and hug them when things aren't going well.

MY FAVORITE CUSTOMER IS… very special. She sends boxes to soldiers overseas. She gets them ready, and I pick them up and mail them for her. We work well together to make that happen!

WHILE I WORK… in the office, I like to listen in for my daily dose of news and then switch over to some music. I like a lot of different genres. Bob Seger is my favorite, but I love Black Pumas, Spoon, Humble Pie, Brandi Carlisle, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden — the list goes on. I think I love the 60s and 70s the most, but I also like 80s heavy metal and grunge.

AFTER WORK… I'm pretty worn out. I like to do Camp Gladiator and prefer to work out before work if possible because too many other things seem to interfere. I like reading, playing with my kids and grandkids, listening to albums and travel ing. My husband and I like to go see bands and have little jam sessions with friends.

THE BUSIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR… is Novem ber. Some customers get a jump start on Christ mas shopping, and all the catalogs are a double whammy. December is better for me because the catalogs and bulk mail slow down. Christmas cards are easier to handle, so we mostly just get pack ages and it makes me feel like Santa's elf!

MY SPECIAL HOLIDAY TIP… don’t use red or green envelopes — it is hard to read the address. And please do not put your return address on the back of the envelopes.

LETTERS TO SANTA… were aplenty when I started. We used to get tons, ones we would pick up in the mailboxes. I feel it's very important to keep believ ing in Santa! Write those letters!
