I m' in awe

Have you ever been so in awe that your mouth literally dropped open? I remember one of those jaw-dropping moments. I was a first-time, bleary-eyed mom adjusting to life with a newborn. When a pal stopped by with her three young kids, I observed how she gathered her crew from her freshly washed SUV, reached inside her perfectly organized bag for juice boxes and string cheese (organic, of course) and regaled me with news of her morning Pilates class. I just blinked at her and wondered, “How is she doing it? How?” Caring for my new bundle felt like a climbing-Mount-Everest kind of achievement, and she made it all look so easy. I was in awe. That was seven years ago, and this friend still makes motherhood look like smooth sailing. And I’m still awestruck. Everywhere they go some people just color the world with awesome accomplishments and outstanding feats. We spotlight a half dozen of these awe-inspiring jaw-droppers in our annual Tastemakers feature on page 35. They are community volunteers, city leaders and educators. Whether they’re spearheading the next great project, campaigning for funds for important causes or inspiring youth to pursue their unique interests, these standout citizens have passion, purpose and panache—and they’re leaving an undeniable mark on Southlake. For Tastemaker Chad Patton, giving back to the city he loves is easy. “We’ve really rooted ourselves here,” he says. “It’s such an endearing community.” Our Tastemakers also happen to have incredible personal style—a special thanks to Vineyard Vines for styling them for our photo shoot at North Park. If we’re lucky, we can learn a few things from wow-worthy people. Just a few years ago, former pro tennis player Taylor Dent skyrocketed to No. 21 in the world with his crushing 149-mph serve. Today, the former Olympian is teaching tennis hopefuls how to play at the top of their game. Turn to page 70 to learn more about Dent and his indoor tennis facility coming to Keller. And if you could use some insight on how to add a wow factor to your home, take a few pointers from the design-minded pros in “Home Schooled” on page 15. Who leaves you in awe? Tweet us @SouthlakeStyle with #InAwe. And then tell those amazing people how much they impress you!

CHANGE OF SEASONS: A MEMOIR JOHN OATES, CHRIS EPTING APRIL 4

A Musician and His Guitar Every musician has a story, and John Oates of Hall & Oates shares his in “Change of Seasons.” A memoir of his life before and after he collaborated with Daryl Hall, the book chronicles Oates’ life from childhood to meeting up with Hall in the 1960s to the present. Hall & Oates rose to fame with more than 60 million records sold worldwide and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Based on the handwritten journals he kept throughout his musical career, “Change of Seasons” gives Oates the opportunity to tell his story, which is more than just being on the other end of an ampersand.

All in the Family THE CIRCLE IN THEATERS APRIL 28

Not So Clear Intentions Although relevant to today’s work culture that questions whether or not releasing your social media passwords to potential employers is a good idea, “The Circle” is actually based on a 2013 novel by David Eggers. As Mae, played by Emma Watson (Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”), climbs the not-so-typical corporate ladder of the world’s largest tech and social media company, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), The Circle’s founder, tries to convince her that living a life of complete transparency is the way to go. But should we expect the people we work with to know everything about us? The flick is sure to evoke social commentary on privacy in today’s world.

Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan, “Undateable Live”) plays a 30-something producer at “The Breakdown,” a national cable news show shot in New Jersey. As she begins to question where her career is headed, Katie’s mother, Carol, also takes stock of her life spent as a stay-at-home mom for 30 years. Carol (Andrea Martin, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) decides a change is in order and accepts an internship at Katie’s news program. Having an overbearing mother to deal with during the holidays is one thing. However, dealing with such a mom at work can be quite a different experience. Adam Campbell (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Horatio Sanz (“Saturday Night Live”) and Nicole Richie (“The Simple Life”) also star in this new network comedy.

ust splurged on a handknotted Aubusson rug or opulent woven tapestries? You might want to brace yourself. While the decadent luxury of Old World-style décor once graced many a home in Southlake, consider this trend officially out. If you find yourself muttering, “Say it isn’t so!” from atop a scrollworkpatterned chaise, you may need a crash course in interior design. It’s an ever-evolving world of colors and styles, and when one fad goes out, another one comes in. As for what’s in now? Just look to the experts. We asked a few design-minded professionals for their pointers on creating a fashionable, comfortable home bursting with your own unique style and personality. APR 17 • 15

Her favorite room? The master bathroom. “I love the clean white marble and the chain-link chandelier,” she says. “And of course the tub! I’m a bath girl.” Jones discovered a freestanding stainless steel tub online that was both beautiful and functional. Many tubs of this type offer great looks but are too narrow to be enjoyed comfortably. So for Jones, this bathroom find fit the bill perfectly. The mom of three, who relishes a relaxing bath, now has her own sophisticated space with touches that speak to her personal style.

02:

LESSON NO. 1:

LET YOUR LIFESTYLE GUIDE YOUR HOME DÉCOR It doesn’t matter how many inspiring ideas you discover on Pinterest or Houzz; if they don’t mesh with your lifestyle and passions, they don’t belong in your home. “Your family has to be able to live in your home,” says Carol Jones, an advisor with Engel & Völkers. “It has to be comfy and cozy. Home is a space to create, laugh, live, rest and love.” Jones recently remodeled her Southlake home with a goal to reflect her personal style, which she calls “comfortable but with a little bit of edge and luxe.” She revamped her home’s kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms in an eight-week labor of love that was absolutely worth it. “Your home is where you have meals, laugh and share with your family,” she says. “Take the time to make your home unique for you and your people.”

AIM FOR TIMELESS OVER TRENDY Whether you want to make some simple updates to your home or you’re doing some major renovations, the pros agree: There’s no need to take a sweeping approach to all the latest fads. It’s best to opt for a classic style instead of ultra-modern. Elizabeth Huffman with Black Door Home Co. advises picking timeless items and adding trendy

"“ Furniture and accessory placement can make a huge difference in how a space feels.” —Casey Hall | Interior Designer SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

03:

touches—such as curtains and pillows—that can easily be switched out as seasons and fads change. “Timeless items don’t scream trend, and that feel is definitely coming back,” she says. “Think Southern Living. People want pretty homes.” Huffman embraces the timeless design element in her home and through the name of her business. Less than enthused with her home’s builder-grade interior doors, Huffman wanted a more personal, unique feel. So she painted her doors black, giving them a clean and classic look that will endure interior design trends that come and go. Some other design ideas with timeless appeal? Huffman likes ceiling treatments as well as painted porches, both of which she has embraced in her own home. INCORPORATE WHAT’S ALREADY IN YOUR HOME Modernizing your home doesn’t necessarily mean out with the old and in with the new. If you ask Casey Hall of Lonesome Dove Design, LLC, there’s nothing more satisfying than helping clients incorporate special pieces they want to keep. Have a cushy, oversized armchair that’s your go-to spot every evening? Or a dining room table that’s been in your family for years? Don’t get rid of it—work with it. “Rarely are we presented with a clean slate to start fresh. Most of the time we are asked to utilize some or much of what a client already owns,” Hall says. “We love to do that because we believe strongly in rearranging and repurposing.” By using existing furniture and items, not only will your home feel like home, you’ll create a curated effect. Rather than your home looking like it was ripped from the pages of a catalog, it will look as though furniture and accessories were carefully chosen over time, Hall says. Keeping purchases to a minimum also allows you to keep your costs down. Instead of making big splurges, make a big impact with existing items.

04:

MAKE SMALL CHANGES FOR A POWERFUL IMPACT Don’t think you need to overhaul your entire home to get it looking its best. Even a few small tweaks will yield a noticeable improvement. If you’re looking to refresh your home’s style, Huffman recommends tackling the top three: paint, counters and flooring. “Paint goes a long way,” she says, “and updating counters and backsplashes can also make a huge change.” When it comes to flooring, Huffman likes to carry a particular style through different doorways. “It makes the space feel bigger so you don’t feel like you’re in separate rooms when the floor changes,” she says. Sometimes just a simple shift is all it takes to breathe new life into a room. “Furniture and accessory placement can make a huge difference in how a space feels,” says Hall.

Carol Jones

Consider the placement of your TV, which should be as close to eye level as possible when you’re seated. If your gaze is currently upward at a television positioned above your fireplace, you might consider reconfiguring your room. One of the hottest trends now is placing your flat-screen on the wall above a large console or media cabinet and surrounding it with floating shelves.

05:

TAKE A CUE FROM THE CATWALK The next time you’re meandering around Town Square or browsing your favorite boutiques, pay attention to what you see in store windows— what’s hot in the fashion world translates into interior design. “Home trends definitely follow runway trends,” says Jones. “Ralph Lauren speaks to it with pink, navy and gray. Tom Ford is all about pink and cream, dark brown and black.” In her home, Jones particularly loves Sherwin Williams’ Black Fox, an off-black shade with warm chocolate undertones. While Jones says neutrals such as beige, gray and cream will always be en vogue, bold colors—think vibrant jewel tones and bright pops of pink—are having a major moment in interior design. Runway trends extend beyond color, though. Hall notes that when trends such as faux fur and mixed metals appear in the fashion realm, they start popping up in interior design, as well. “To a certain extent, one complements the other,” she says.

18 • APR 17

That’s not to say you need to stay up to date on fashion blogs or jet off to New York Fashion Week. Just do what Huffman does—aim for your home to be a reflection of your own personal style. Rather than weave in haute couture, Huffman likes her home to feel like “a great pair of jeans but dressed up with a necklace and cool heels. “It’s not necessarily runway, but style in general,” she continues. “I like a comfortable but beautiful look—very Anthropologie. I want people to feel at home and relaxed.” DON’T OVERLOOK THE DETAILS When you think interior design, the big items such as furniture and flooring might come to mind, but it’s the small touches that make all the difference. “Design is in the details,” says Jones. “I see hardware and lighting as jewelry for the home. It separates you from your neighbor.” If you’re looking to make a splash with details, some of the hottest trends today are throwbacks such as gold hardware and wallpaper. “Brass hardware is making a comeback and true gold is also back,” says Hall. “Trendy wallpapers and grasscloths are being used selectively on accent walls, in powder baths and below chair rails.” Huffman’s personal favorite is gold hardware—from faucets and knobs to cabinet pulls and light fixtures. “To me, it’s like, where does it stop? I love it everywhere,” she says. Whether you adore brass fixtures or hot-pink stripes on your ceiling, if you love it, go for it. “Visualize what you want in your space,” says Huffman, “and don’t be afraid to do it.”

BOND ELECTION BY AUDREY SELLERS

n Dragon Nation, excellence is an expectation. This month, the community can help Dragons continue this tradition of excellence by voting yes in Carroll’s school bond election. The Carroll School Board unanimously called for a $208 million bond election on Saturday, May 6. On the ballot is a single proposition to include projects identified and recommended by more than 40 citizens and employees on a Capital Needs Planning Committee (CNPC). “Getting out to vote yes is each individual’s opportunity and responsibility to help provide for and continue with the excellence of CISD,” says Christopher Archer, Carroll School Board president. “The vast majority of us moved to Southlake because of the quality of the schools and for our children. Along with the City of Southlake, it is what continues to keep our home values high and community so desirable.” As a Chapter 41 Robin Hood district, Carroll ISD is estimated to surrender $19 million in local tax dollars back to Texas this year. The state has recaptured more than $215 million from CISD since the district became a Chapter 41 district in 2001. However, bond dollars fall on the capital side of the budget, which is not subject to Robin Hood. “And most importantly,” Archer adds, “there isn’t any planned tax increase to our taxpayers.” More than half of the $208 million project list involves maintenance and upkeep of existing facilities. “Much of this bond package is not flashy; it’s for maintenance and lifecycle-type items,” Archer says. “However, the CNPC put so much thought and effort into their recommendations, that it truly encompasses all campuses and all students.” Bill Webb, a Southlake resident who volunteered on the CNPC, says that everything in the package has a specific need. “We don’t feel like anything is superfluous. What’s there is needed. This recommendation is very well thought out, and many people have shared input,” he says. The bond benefits all Dragons, regardless of interest or extra or co-curricular activities, from band and theatre to STEM and athletics. Even the youngest Dragons will benefit from new technology and learning opportunities. Developing a package that doesn’t involve a tax increase is the gold star on the homework assignment. “It obviously makes it a lot more palatable when there’s no tax increase,” Webb says. But even if the bond did end up increasing taxes, Webb would still be on board. “Most of us are here because of the education system,” he says. “Even if there had been a tax SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

increase, [the CNPC] was prepared to take that to the community. We feel like it’s such an investment in our schools.” Whether your children are currently in Carroll ISD or they have already graduated, Archer urges citizens to cast their ballots in support of the bond package—if not for current Dragons, then for those to come. “Although most of my children have graduated or are older and may not feel the long-term effects of this bond package, as a Southlake homeowner and resident and as CISD Board President, I feel that it is all of Southlake's responsibility to get out and vote yes for this bond,” says Archer. “It will ensure that the future generations of Dragons will have the same opportunities and successes that those before them have had.”

SOUTHLAKE FIREFIGHTERS HELPED BATTLE BLAZES IN TEXAS PANHANDLE When the Texas Forest Service requested help in battling deadly wildfires in the Texas Panhandle, the Southlake Fire Department answered the call. Engineer Brent Nobile and firefighter Seth Corder, both specially trained wildland firefighters, joined firefighters from several other cities to help control and contain the fires last month. “The specialized training our firefighters receive allows us the opportunity to provide assistance to any agency facing devastating and fast-moving wildfires like these,” Southlake Fire Chief Mike Starr told MySouthlakeNews.com. “It is critical to have a rotation of firefighters that are able to provide relief to crews that have been battling raging fires for days or even weeks. This is a great partnership that allows us to come to the aid of any anyone that needs our help and support.” MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR OPERATION KINDNESS’ NINTHANNUAL HOPE GALA A four-course dinner. Open bar with top-shelf spirits. The chance to help thousands of homeless dogs and cats. DRAGON BAND ANNOUNCED WINNER OF AMERICAN AIRLINES TICKET AUCTION Two first-class tickets anywhere American Airlines flies—that’s what was up for bid in the Carroll Dragon Band’s silent auction. The winning bid was $8,000, which will go towards the purchase of a new set of instruments for the drum line. The winner chose to remain anonymous. To put the donation in perspective, one snare costs approximately $600, quads $1,400, bass $500 and a pair of cymbals approximately $600. The band will need to purchase multiple instruments of each type. The remaining portion will be funded by the Carroll Band Booster Club.

STEM PROGRAM HELPED BRING CARROLL INDOOR PERCUSSION SHOW TO LIFE Sophomore snare player Claire Casey used her passion for music and engineering to solve a unique challenge with Carroll Indoor Percussion’s show, FROM DUST. Part of the show’s unique sound is the darbouka drums that snare players use in addition to the snares. The challenge was attaching a darbouka drum to a snare drum in a way that is secure and makes both drums still playable. Casey used the CAD software AutoDesk Inventor Pro to design her invention in the Carroll STEM Academy engineering computer lab. She used the 3D printer, MakerBot Replicator+, which is the latest/newest by MakerBot. The bracket takes approximately six hours and 37 minutes to print, and it weighs 74 grams. The estimated selling price of this product would be $40 to $50 if it were on the market. Since the drumline has four snares, this represented a significant cost savings to the show.

Dan Quinn For a guy whose career is in the very right-brained world of music and entertainment, Dan Quinn is no novice when it comes to math. Before taking the plunge from the corporate world to pursuing his love of music by becoming a fulltime DJ and musician, Quinn took a good look at the numbers. “I took a practical approach to this business; I saw what was realistic,” says Quinn. “There are 60,000 weddings a year in Dallas; that’s 1,200 a week.” So this DJ and “one-man band” decided that there was indeed a market for his talent. Now, in addition to performing at corporate events and private parties, Quinn has tapped into that booming wedding business. As a result, he is booked nearly every weekend and has become Southlake’s go-to music guy. The busy dad (he and his equally busy wife, Danielle, who runs FlyKids Yoga in Southlake, have four children between them) also runs a summer camp for kids called Oontz Kids, which helps aspiring young DJs learn the business. The camp started in Southlake, but seeing the need—and the numbers—Quinn is taking the model to other cities around the country. “I teach the kids at camp that ‘your job is to create a mood.’ People may not clap or even look at you,” he says, “but that doesn’t mean you’re not doing a good job.” Instead, Quinn knows how to spot a job well done. “When I can make other people have a good time, that’s such a cool rush,” he says.

Stephanie Pennington

Stephanie Pennington is not the type of gal to toot her own horn. Her list of volunteer involvement runs long, but the modest mom of three isn’t bragging. She’s too busy for that. For the past two years, she’s been involved as a committee member in bringing Young Life to Southlake, a task that involved not only finding a full-time leader but also planning the group’s first big fundraiser, which will be held in the fall. She and her husband, Tommy, a local real estate agent, have also chaired the GRACE Gala, and she has helped with the auction other years. She is a Carroll Education Foundation executive board member and, as VP of events, has decorated the annual culinary event for the past three years. Pennington has also helped with Tabletops for the last several years. Having three daughters with very different interests (Matti, 16, is in theater; Emma, 14, is on the JV tennis team; and Isabelle, 10, plays lacrosse, volleyball and does gymnastics) has led Pennington into youth-oriented charity work, too, including school PTOs and the National Charity League of Southlake, for which she has served on various committees. Asked about how she and her family like to spend a Saturday night in Southlake, Pennington prefaces her answer with, “If we’re not going to a gala or fundraiser?” On those rare weekends when the calendar is clear, you might just find her at her favorite restaurant, Mi Cocina, or catching a movie at Harkins Theater. No doubt, it would be a well-deserved break.

Sheri Mills What do you do when your three children wind up in three different Carroll schools and the PTO juggle becomes a bit overwhelming? For Sheri Mills, the answer was to run for—and ultimately win—a board of trustees position on the Carroll ISD school board in 2014. A further catalyst came when Southlake’s tax ratification election, which would have provided funds to the school district, failed to pass in 2012. That’s when the inner activist in Mills came out, and the campaign for her position began. “It really motivated me when it didn’t pass,” Mills says. “It failed because people didn’t show up to vote.” Now that she’s part of the board, Mills is committed to working with the school district and her fellow trustees to ensure that Southlake’s schools get the support—and funds—they need. “I love our schools,” she says. It helps, she adds, “that we have the best superintendent in the state.” She and her husband, Mike, have three Dragons of their own who are not only in different schools, they also have very different interests. Alli, a freshman, plays soccer; Tyler Marie, a seventh-grader, is into cheer; while son M.J. loves football and lacrosse. It’s enough to keep this working mom (Mills is vice president of program development for Neuroscience Education Institute) constantly on the go. Crazy busy or not, Mills wouldn’t change a thing—living in a community she loves and successfully juggling work, family, kids’ activities and her role on the board of trustees. Says Mills, “I feel really blessed.”

Chad Patton

Chad Patton has an easy commute from his day job to his position as a city council member. As a full-service financial advisor for Wells Fargo Advisors in Southlake Town Square, Patton spends his days managing estates of families, individuals, business owners and professionals, and helping them make smart financial decisions. And when it’s time to switch hats and focus on the needs of the city and its residents, Patton is just a few steps away from city hall. It’s a far cry from the commute he once had. As national sales director for a company in California, Patton traveled weekly from his home in Southlake to California and other parts of the country, a commute that eventually took a toll on him and his family (Patton and his wife, Tracy, have a 14-year-old daughter, Sophie, and a seven-year-old son, Grant). But Patton wasn’t about to move from Southlake. “We’ve really rooted ourselves here,” he says. “It’s such an endearing community.” Taking the job at Wells Fargo brought him closer to the community he loved and enabled Patton to get involved with the city, something he couldn’t accomplish when he was living on the road. He began by volunteering on the zoning board of adjustment and eventually became vice chair of the parks and recreation board. When the city council position opened up in 2016, he ran, uncontested, though not unfamiliar with the inner workings of the city, thanks to his volunteer service in Southlake. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of this council,” he says.

Mayor Laura Hill If you were to tweet something about Southlake—good or bad— don’t be surprised if you were to get a response from Laura Hill, mayor of Southlake. She’s not afraid to communicate with her constituency, in person or via social media. And even when her constituency has issues they are upset about. She also wants to let people know that whatever their concern or problem, it’s not too small to be addressed by community leaders. Working with others, inviting their input and ideas, is something Mayor Hill does well. When she decided to run for mayor, she reached out to four people in the community. “I said ‘Can I buy you a coffee?’” she recalls, “And I said, ‘I want you to tell me what makes this community special and what we can do to keep it that way.’” Since she became the mayor in 2015, Hill, who runs Downey Publishing, a company started by her father, has been working to not only keep the community special, but to make it better. Her challenge has been to foster the development and growth in the area while still maintaining the city’s small-town charm. “The day you come to Southlake is the day you want development to stop,” says Mayor Hill. “My job is to help people understand why and how we’re changing.” Asked about what she’s added to the community since taking on her role as mayor, Hill says that she has delivered a “sense of urgency to get things done.” Next up on her list: bringing a trolley to the city. “I want to be the trolley mayor,” she says. Mayor Hill’s wardrobe: Self-styled, from her sunnies to her sundae heels. #themayorsshoes: priceless

Chad McCoy On Chad: Sea Crest Gingham Slim Tucker Shirt, $89.50 Bow Tie, $55 Stretch Breaker Pants, $98.50 Vineyard Vines

Chad McCoy’s roots in Southlake go back—way back. He was raised in the community and went through Carroll schools, graduating in 1991. Now, McCoy teaches theater at Dawson Middle School. He not only has kids performing the classics, he has also written a play that his students presented. Inspired by an article he read about the devastating effects of the West, Texas, deadly fertilizer plant explosion, McCoy researched and wrote a play that addressed the children of West and how their lives were altered by the tragedy. The play won first place in a UIL competition in 2014. For the past two summers, McCoy has been running “Creative Kids,” a summer theater program that enables kids to write and perform their own plays. Even though he is passionate about the arts and devotes his time to inspiring youth to take to the stage, he realizes that community support makes his job better. “I’ve never had a lack of support here,” he says. “Even financially. For Grease, we had a $1,000 budget, and it was $2,000 just to get the rights.” But the PTO stepped in so the show could go on. Even Mayor Laura Hill, a fellow 2017 Tastemaker, has shown support, tweeting to her followers about a free kids’ show that McCoy was directing. “She didn’t have to do that for me,” he says. But he understands that Southlake is unique. “We still have a strong sense of community here; we’re going to come together no matter what.”

Just Hanging Out KICK BACK IN THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE

long day calls for a little relaxation. Whether you’ve had a rough day at the office, in the garden or keeping up with kiddos, the Double Rattan Hanging Chair from Serena and Lily provides just the place to shed your stresses. We’re completely hung up on this hanging chair that’s inspired by a Scandinavian design from the 1960s. Constructed from stylish and durable rattan, it’s perfect for enjoying a summer breeze or lounging, swaying and hanging out anywhere you please. Equipped with industrial-strength rope, this seat can be installed indoors or on a sheltered porch. Wherever you put it, though, it’ll be the ultimate hot seat—we recommend calling dibs. We also suggest calling a professional to assist with the installation; it needs to be anchored properly to avoid damaging your ceiling.

As the name suggests, the Double Rattan Hanging Chair can accommodate two in a cozy scooped seat. Shimmy in with your sweetie and watch the kids frolic in the yard or catch your favorite TV show from your living room. Have a spectacular pool or golf course view from your bedroom? Hang it there. If the view is overwhelming, just take a nap. You can relax comfortably knowing that a heavy-duty loop and rope ensures this chair is extra sturdy. It scores high in the looks department, too. Crisp white trim provides a timeless, elegant look, or you can add a pop of personality (and comfort) with colorful pillows or cushions. Either way, this is destined to be the signature piece on your porch or in your home. It’ll also get you in the good graces of your stylish friends. Jonathan Adler, the world-renowned designer, once said that every house should have a hanging chair. The next time you want to unwind or just hang out for a bit, kick back in the Double Rattan Hanging Chair. Once you’re in, you won’t want to get out. And that’s perfectly okay. Close your eyes, sway back and forth, and relish the relaxing moment. You’ll quickly get the hang of it.

he landlocked expanse of Dallas-Fort Worth doesn’t exactly scream seafood destination. But lack of a nearby ocean hasn’t stopped Water Grill in Uptown Dallas from making waves in the local culinary scene. The Texas offshoot of the California-based restaurant chain has fresh fish flown in daily and features a rotating menu of crab, lobster, sea urchin and 13 varieties of fish. Throw in handcrafted cocktails and an upscale nautical vibe, and Water Grill might just be your new favorite way to get your omega 3s. When it comes to the seafood that Executive Chef Kyle Rowan will use in his kitchen, only the finest fish will do. “We’re committed to delivering one of the best seafood experiences our guests have ever had,” he says. “Our devotion to superior

quality seafood and freshness is of the highest standard.” Seafood seekers with discerning tastes will appreciate the effort that goes into the menu at Water Grill. It starts with topnotch seafood—fish, oysters, crustaceans and more—flown to Love Field by the restaurant’s private distribution company. Chef Rowan’s inspiration begins when he sees the day’s fresh catch arrive straight off the plane each morning. “It’s hard not to be inspired when you have the best seafood from the East, West and Gulf Coasts coming right to you,” he says. The chef’s current favorite? Spot prawns flown in from Santa Barbara, California. “They’re easily one of the hardest menu items to find in Dallas,” he adds.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

The menu at Water Grill constantly changes to adapt to in-season seafood, making it all the more exciting to trek to Dallas for a meal; every visit offers a different bounty from the sea. Patrons who regularly visit the restaurant have come to love the Wild Ross Sea Chilean Sea Bass (cauliflower purée, lemon chutney, hazelnuts and brown butter). The New England Lobster Roll, which guests can order regular or Connecticut-style (served warm and tossed with butter), is also a popular menu item. We happen to like our lobster hot and buttered, but if you prefer your lobster with mayo, Water Grill can masterfully prepare both versions. If you’re in the mood for oysters, grab a spot at the raw bar, which boasts an enticing selection of as many as 15 oyster varieties. Just be prepared to splurge—the oysters are about three bucks apiece. You can also savor chilled clams and scallops as well as iced shellfish platters perfect for sharing. Water Grill’s bar is also worth noting. It features 20 locally brewed beers on tap, 35 wines by the glass and handcrafted cocktails incorporating regional ingredients. The muddled blueberries and fresh lemon in your Beauregard? Locally sourced. On the dessert front, Water Grill delights with many luscious options such as Coconut Panna Cotta (with passion fruit chile syrup and sesame seed tuile) and Maple Cheesecake (served with sour cream ice cream). The sweet standout, though, is the Pot De Crème. This dense yet buoyant treat has a profound chocolate flavor thanks to chocolate crème, sorbet, biscotti and cocoa nibs. As for the atmosphere, the 7,500-square-foot restaurant is kind of like a sophisticated subterranean lair, but with views of the Uptown skyline. With sumptuous leather booths and an outdoor patio with a fire pit, the entire space is relaxing and comfortable with plenty of nautical details, right down to seawater tanks that display live shellfish. Chef Cowan’s personal favorite area of the restaurant is the patio. “It’s by far one of the coolest things about the space,” he says. “We made the roof entirely retractable because it was designed with the unpredictable Texas weather in mind. You can catch some sun in the spring and, when rainstorms catch us off guard, we can pull out the roof. Best of both worlds.” While the space is effortlessly easygoing, make no mistake—Water Grill is a high-end seafood destination. It’s ideal for a special night out or a business lunch to impress clients. And if you’re looking to host a private event, a 500-bottle working wine cellar makes a unique, intimate venue for up to 16 guests. The next time you a crave a meal of proteins caught from the sea, head to Big D and drop your line for king crabs, scallops and nearly whatever fish hooks you.

MESA RESTAURANT 1000 Texan Trail Grapevine 817.329.1144 MesaDallas.com/Mesa-Grapevine

60 • APR 17

If you love mom-and-pop places and you have a penchant for fresh, flavorful and unique Mexican food, venture just outside the bubble to Mesa Restaurant. The Grapevine location is an expansion of the family-owned Oak Cliff restaurant that has been named one of the 100 Best Restaurants in Dallas by D Magazine and has fed notable A-listers such as Conan O’Brien, Jay-Z and the Queen B herself, Beyoncé. Prominently situated in Grapevine Station, Mesa serves upscale Mexican coastal cuisine that’s handcrafted with love by husband-and-wife chef owners, Raul and Olga Reyes. The duo hails from Alvarado, a coastal city in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Tapping into the flavors they grew up eating, the chefs put forth plenty of Veracruzstyle Mexican dishes ranging from ceviche to lobster enchiladas. Patrons can also pick from a few Tex-Mex options on the menu, including fajitas and tacos. Considering that Chef Olga’s authentic mole has been voted the best in Dallas (it’s a family recipe with more than 20 ingredients), we had to get a taste. The Mole Mama Cata, the restaurant’s signature dish, is not to be missed. Handmade tortillas are dipped in a rich mole sauce and filled with tender, mole-braised chicken. No lumpy refried beans plopped on the side; instead, the enchiladas are served atop a bed of jasmine rice and julienned vegetables. The dish is drenched with more of Mesa’s magical mole, which is warm and comforting, with an undeniable hint of chocolate. The sauce is so good, we wonder if Chef Olga would consider selling a bottled version. The menu doesn’t overwhelm with options, which allows Mesa to focus on perfecting its specialty coastal dishes such as Guiso Del Chef (a wave of seafood in a white wine and beer sauce) and Camarones Enchipotlados (fresh Gulf shrimp and chipotle sauce). Land lovers will delight in the Tenderloin Enchiladas (handmade corn tortillas with beef tenderloin and tomatillo sauce) as well as enchiladas packed with black beans or veggies. The bar menu aims to please with a sizeable selection of spirits, wines and cervezas that range from Rahr Ugly Pug to Modelo Especial. A dozen or so cocktails, including the Mesa Martini (Lunazul tequila, triple sec and fresh lime and orange juices), are also worth exploring. We happen to love the Mesa Horchata, a spiked version of the classic Mexican rice-almond-cinnamon beverage. Mesa’s variety combines housemade horchata water with Cruzan cinnamon rum and vanilla. Sipping this sweet concoction feels as though we’re perched in a seaside cantina. Mesa is open daily for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. If you get hungry for Cochinita Pibil or Enmoladas at 4 p.m., just wait it out in the parking lot. It’ll be worth it.

Savor a Taste of the South Secret recipes, famous soda shop jerks and a whole lotta ice cream put Leopold’s Ice Cream on Savannah’s map nearly one century ago. Three Grecian brothers—the Leopolds—traveled to America in 1919 to learn the art of candy and dessert making from an uncle already in the United States. What happened next was pure confection magic. Leopold’s Ice Cream opened shop in downtown Savannah and serves its famous ice cream to sweet-toothed locals and visitors alike. Of course you’ll find traditional favorites such as chocolate, pistachio and sorbets behind the counter, but Leopold’s is also known for creating the original Tutti Frutti flavor. But sweets aren’t the only delights on the menu; the eatery also serves up a selection of sandwiches, salads and soups. LeopoldsIceCream.com While Cotton & Rye is considered fine dining, the restaurant was designed to be welcoming and unpretentious. Serving dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the eatery’s fare includes American favorites such as fried chicken, hamburgers, mac and cheese and grits to name a few. But with ingredients indigenous to Savannah, the moderately priced starters, greens, main courses and desserts boast the classical flavors of the South. Pair all this with live music playing in the background and you’ve got another Savannah favorite. Reservations are recommended. CottonAndRye.com

GET IN THE SWING | FORMER PRO TENNIS PLAYER TAYLOR DENT SERVES UP LESSONS TO KIDS AND PROS ALIKE

I

f you want to hone your tennis game, Taylor Dent can certainly teach you a thing or two. The former professional player climbed to No. 21 in the world, competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics and scored wins over some of the biggest names in the sport. Now, the tennis star and Keller resident is helping develop the next generation of tennis talent. Along with his wife and father, who also played professional tennis (wife Jenny ranked No. 52 in the world and father Phil ranked No. 12 in the world), this month Dent breaks ground on an indoor tennis facility, the Birch Racquet and Lawn Club.

I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT TENNIS BECAUSE: I love the self-reliance it breeds. Tennis is tough physically and emotionally. You have to be smart, fit and a problem-solver when you’re on the court. Tennis is one of the toughest sports, but you always get something out of it. ONE OF THE PROUDEST MOMENTS OF MY CAREER AS A PRO PLAYER: was winning my first title. That put my father and me in the history books. We were—and still are—the only father-and-son team to win titles on tour. I GREW UP IDOLIZING: different guys at different times. When I was young, Pete Sampras was winning everything. Everybody loves a winner! Before that, I loved Boris Becker’s dominating style. As I learned how tough tennis was, I loved watching Pat Rafter. He looked like he worked so hard! BEFORE A MATCH, I WAS ALWAYS: super nervous. You never know what’s going to happen. When you see players on TV, they have a poker face; you don’t know if they’re nervous. I actually made a point to ask Roger Federer if he still gets nervous before matches. He said, “Yeah, of course I get nervous!” It’s nerve-wracking playing a mentally tough match and maintaining focus and concentration through all the distractions. WHEN I RETIRED IN 2010, I FELT: content. I don’t want to say it was easy, but I was content with the decision. Jenny and I had our first child in January 2010. [The couple has four children: Declan, Liam, Reagan

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

and Blake.] I had three back surgeries and was out of the game for five years. It got to be overwhelming. I reflected on my 12 years on tour. I had wins and losses—I had experienced it all. MY HOPE FOR THE BIRCH RACQUET AND LAWN CLUB: is that it will become a world-class training facility. It’ll be a private, membershipbased club that will amplify the fun of tennis. Where I come from in Southern California, private tennis clubs are common. If you love tennis, a private club takes it to the next level. We have a projected July opening. The club will be developed on almost 30 acres in Keller at the prior location of the horse ranch, Rocky Top. TRANSITIONING FROM PLAYER TO COACH WAS: easy. Teaching is second nature. I’ve been around tennis my whole life, and I’m passionate about helping kids improve. It’s fun. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN COACHING IS: knowing you can’t do it for the players. As much as you want them to go out there and give 100 percent every day and focus on getting better, you can’t do that for them. Before, it was all in my hand. Now I’m an advisor and that gets a little tough. MY GOAL IS FOR PLAYERS TO: play to improve. Kids should always play to get better. Many people get stuck on trying to win all the time, and that’s detrimental. If you’re so wrapped up in what you have to do to win the next point, you lack the freedom to experiment with things that will take you to the next level. MY BEST ADVICE FOR PARENTS OF TENNIS PLAYERS IS TO: make tennis fun. Kids will stop playing if it’s not fun. If you can make it fun, I’d also say to teach them the right grips. Some of the toughest things we have to do is get kids out of bad habits with their grips.

JUSTICE LAW FIRM Protecting your rights and your family

I

f you are facing a difficult time with your family, home or finances, it’s important to be represented by an attorney you can trust. Tracey Justice and her firm, Justice Law Firm, PC, have an outstanding reputation for providing quality, individualized service and attention to all clients. Part of the reason for this excellent service comes from Justice’s personal commitment to helping families. “There are so many families and individuals going through crises in our own neighborhoods, schools, businesses and churches,” says Justice. “You can’t help but interact with hurting people, and of course you want to help them.” Some of the firm’s areas of practice include family law, collaborative divorce, child custody, child support, adoption and termination, probate, wills and estate planning, employment law, business law and general civil litigation. “Justice Law Firm is unique because the attorneys and staff work together as a team to successfully and efficiently handle our cases,” explains Justice. After graduating with a degree in psychology from Baylor University, Justice obtained her Texas Real Estate license. Later, she decided to make a career change and received her doctorate in Jurisprudence from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. Justice became a certified mediator and received a specialized certification to mediate suits affecting the parent-child relationship. Justice became a member of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics, and in addition, she is a member of the Northeast Tarrant County Bar Association, the Northeast Tarrant County Family Law Bar Association, the Tarrant Collaborative Divorce Counsel and the Collaborative Institute of Texas. Helping clients is not Justice’s only passion—she also enjoys giving back to the community. During her career, she has served on the board of directors for Ohlook Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit that promotes local theatre for children. Currently she serves as a founding board member of Stepping Stones Foundation, a nonprofit that provides clothing and food to local underprivileged families, and she is also serving on the board of directors for Spiritual Outreach Worldwide, a nonprofit Christian ministry that serves the people of Ukraine. “I want to help members of my community,” Justice says. “I became an attorney because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of people. Now my number one professional goal is to continue to maintain a reputation as an honest and ethical attorney.”

— Tracey Justice

Even though she stays busy most of the time helping others, Justice still finds time to enjoy living in Southlake with her family. “I have lived in Southlake since 1998,” she says. “My children grew up here, and we have attended the same church for all those years. We have Sunday night family dinner each week, when our whole family comes together at our house to fellowship and share a meal. Southlake is my home.” When you need an attorney who will take care of your family like she would her own, call Justice Law Firm. You can’t go wrong with Justice on your side.

Shady Living

T

exans welcome warmer temps and budding blooms, but give us a few weeks and we’ll start complaining about the heat, sun, mosquitoes and pollen. Sure, we love to spend time outdoors—especially if we’re poolside with a refreshing beverage—but too much sunshine (and the resulting heat) makes us a little cranky. That’s when shade structures become our salvation—a place of refuge from the Texas sun. STRUCTURED COVERS Unlike an enclosed patio, a pergola’s opensided design and absence of a solid roof won’t shield you from rain or strong winds, but it helps define your outdoor space without confining it. When evening breezes begin to blow, you’ll enjoy the reprieve. Typically built from decay-resistant treated cedar, pergolas can be stained or left to weather a natural gray. Roofs are often constructed with crossbeams, slats or adorned with latticework. Aside from supporting posts, you can opt for built-in seating, planters, railings or any other accessories as your space and budget allow.

shaded passageways. Vines were encouraged to climb upon the structure, further aiding the natural cooling system and enhancing its appearance. Today’s well-planned pergolas often feature plants growing up the posts and even over the roof. In our area, a hardy variety of climbing vines will soften the hard edges of your pergola, provide more shade and add a touch of color and fragrance. Consider Carolina jessamine, clematis, hyacinth bean vine, Confederate Star jasmine, honeysuckle or wisteria, to name a few, but keep in mind bloomers may also attract bees. Certain perennials—such as wisteria—can add a significant amount of weight to your structure and make it difficult to restain the wood as it weathers. Unless you have woodworking experience and a slick set of power tools, hire a pro to build your pergola. It might seem like a simple structure, but like most DIY projects, this one can be more work than you expect. No reason to sweat when summer isn’t even here yet!

GO AU NATURALE Perhaps the most appealing accompaniment to your outdoor structure is the addition of natural elements. The earliest Renaissance gardens featured the forerunner to pergolas—pliable limbs bound together, woven with long slats and then arched to make

Runnin’ Down a Dream Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit Dallas on 40th anniversary tour

M

ore than one generation loves Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. With hits going back to their eponymous debut album in 1976 to their 13th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, released in 2014, a band like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers culls fans of classic rock with a blue-collar bent and even those who lean toward a country twang. Their universal appeal connects directly to their longevity—they’ve played venues around the world for decades, including a Super Bowl halftime show, and they’ve entertained crowds of over 20,000 fans. Now, they’re kicking off their 40th anniversary tour in April, and their second stop on the road will be right here at American Airlines Center. Get your tickets and be prepared for a show full of the hits you love, like “I Won’t Back Down,” “American Girl,” “Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Refugee.” The anniversary tour will feature original band members Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Ron Blair. Drummer Steve Ferrone, the rookie, rounds out the group with 20 years with the band. Rock legend and former band member with the Eagles, Joe Walsh, will provide the opening set at the April 22 concert. Named by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011 as one of “The Top 100 Guitarists of All Time,” Walsh is known for his guitar solos in the Eagles’ hits “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane.” Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers together with Joe Walsh will be an unforgettable night! The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are still available, but going fast!
