OPENING LETTER HigH Flying
I’m excited to see you begin your career as not just a student, but as a Southlake Carroll Dragon. Both are ventures not entered into lightly by students or parents in this city. Even though the original choice of school districts was Mommy and Daddy’s, the coming years and eventual commencement will rightfully bear the fruits of your labor.
Lastly, so many of your fellow Dragons make for impressive role models. They are amongst the best and brightest around. Watch them, learn from them and above all else, repay the favor and pass the Dragon Pride on to those who follow you — especially your little sister. Dragons
I’m also fearful of the many obstacles you will face on the long and winding road ahead. The curriculum will not always be easy, nor will your path as an extraordinary student of an exemplary school always be lined with gold. Nevertheless, we know that CISD is a great place for 21st-century learners just like you. The recently passed bond package and generous support from within the community has given you updated facilities and access to technology rivaling any school in the state, if not the country. Even more importantly, the faculty driving your learning is as engaged as they are engaging.

From the August 2010 issue of Southlake Style: Dear Mia, As you head off to Rockenbaugh Elementary for your first day of kindergarten, my emotions run wild. I’m proud of how prepared you already are thanks to Mom and our many friends at Primrose (on Davis Boulevard). I trust that your playfulness, thirst for knowledge and competitive spirit will all be tremendous assets as you begin to master addition and, eventually, AP Calculus.
So much has changed, yet so much remains the same from when I wrote this letter 12 years ago. LETTER FROM DADDY

WHEN DID YOU GET YOUR BIG BREAK?
juliana
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
SOUTHLAKE TO ‘AMERICAN
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A PASSION FOR MUSIC? When I was 13 years old, Southlake’s School of Rock opened five minutes from my house. I could literally walk there. I started taking vocal and guitar lessons, and I started to find my own voice, write small songs and perform wherever I could. Southlake was pretty essential to my musical upbringing.
In March 2018, I auditioned for “American Idol.” I got in, and I was so surprised. I got to meet so many cool people. I ended up getting eliminated in the Hollywood Round, but it was still a pretty wild, weird, fun and crazy experience for me.
FROM IDOL’ EP POP STAR madrid
I’ve released three singles so far this year — “Madonna,” “Peppermint,” “Astronaut” and a new song called “Savior” just last month. I’ll be releasing my first self-titled EP this month.
HOW DIFFERENT IS IT WORKING AS AN INDEPENDENT VERSUS A SIGNED ARTIST? It’s so, so different! There’s so much money and effort that goes into mixing, mastering, recording and promoting your music. It takes about six months to a year just to fully release one song. I just feel so excited and lucky, and I can’t even express how grateful I am for all of the people who helped me get to this point. Without them, I would have a really hard time getting my music to where it is now.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT MUSIC?
16 • AUG 22 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE ask A...
Music is my therapy. It’s such an emotional thing for me. I’m just so bad at talking about my feelings, so to let it all out there in song feels so freeing to me. I love songwriting, I love performing and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
AND HER FIRST
WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER THAT? I kept auditioning, performing at open mic nights and really started going hard with my writing. Then last year, I met Ben Ruttner from The Knots during one of his shows. We started messaging each other, and he said he wanted to fly me out to New York and work with me. He connected me with his record label, Neon Gold Records, and by the end of the year, I signed as one of their artists.

CAPTAINSincemoving to Southlake in 2013, Shriya Punreddy has searched for a mean ingful way to use her voice. “Debate is like a game,” Shriya says. “It’s a combination of speaking persuasively and being very knowledgeable on the topic be ing discussed. You have to be good at both things.”Shriya has seen much success since joining the debate team in middle school. In her junior year, she became captain of the public forum team, was co-president of the Carroll Medical Academy and even quali fied for the national Jack Howe Memorial Tournament. She also competed in the state tournament three times during her high school career. “It was really fun to travel with the team again and have that bonding experience with them,” she says. “We worked so hard to prepare for state. Seeing all of that hard work pay off was really special.” For her last year in Carroll ISD, Shriya aims to go all the way and win state with her team. After high school, she aspires to work towards a master’s degree in either health care or public policy. Either way, she’ll stay passionate about using her voice to leave an impact. “Carroll ISD has taught me a lot and given me so many memories,” Shriya says. “I’ll always be grateful.”

ALEXANDER GRIFFIN CARROLL CHOIR, THEATER For as long as he could remember, Alex ander Griffin loved to perform. In seventh grade, he joined choir and began singing in a variety of shows and contests. It’s a love that lasted through high school, eventually earning him superior ratings and a sweep stakes trophy at last year’s UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Assessment. “Being able to do choir throughout high school has been wonderful,” Alexander says. “I’ve grown so much as a musician, but I’ve grown as a person even more.” It was that growth that sparked Alex ander to also join the theater program as a sophomore. While his first year was filled with virtual rehearsals and variety shows, he made the most of his experience. By his ju nior year, he was starring in productions like “Rough Magic” and “Miss Nelson Is Missing.” Through it all, his favorite theatrical role was playing the store manager in “Elf: The Musical.”“Ihad an absolute blast performing at every show,” Alexander says. “There was no better feeling than giving it my all on stage and receiving applause from the audience.” Wherever he goes next, Alexander looks forward to majoring in political science in college and continuing to stay active in community theater and choir programs. “I loved being a part of Carroll choir and theater,” Alexander says. “They both made a big difference in my life.”

SOUTHLAKE POLICE OFFICERS WIN AWARDS
Two Southlake police officers received some high honors over the summer. Brett Roberson was named Officer of the Year by the Texas Association of School Resource Officers. As an SRO at Carroll Middle School for over 16 years, Brett has organized the Southlake DPS Youth Academy every year and coordinated trips to the Medical Examiner’s Office. But Brett wasn’t the only officer to receive recognition as officer Brent Carlson also received the Enforcement Hero Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Congratulations to these two dedicated officers!
CEF RAISES $650,000 FOR CARROLL ISD
Earlier this summer, the Carroll Education Foundation announced it raised $650,000 for the 2022-2023 school year. Board chair Rebecca Hindman says CEF has succeeded in funding the salaries of 13 teachers in the district. “From 2018 to 2022, the total amount given to CISD and for senior and alumni schol arships is $2,310,000,” Rebecca says. “That’s more than we raised in the first 22 years combined.” Going into the 2022-2023 school year, Rebecca says she’s grateful for the overwhelm ing support CEF has received on its mission to fund teachers on all 11 campuses. “We could not have done it without the generosity of our Dragon families and business community,” Rebecca says.
Another Dragon is moving on up in the baseball world. Pitcher Kole Rampage, a former Dragon, signed with the Chicago White Sox last month. A former two-sport athlete, Kole played for both football and baseball during his time at Carroll ISD. In his senior year, he had a 6-2 record with a 2.00 ERA and 64 strikeouts. Following his time at Carroll, Kole went on to the University of Arkansas, where he went 14-6 with a 5.01 ERA and 207 strikeouts over the course of his four years there. “So excited to continue the journey!” Kole says via Twitter. “Can’t thank the [White Sox] enough for giving me this opportunity!” Now that he’s signed, the former Dragon is anticipated to start his minor league career with either the Kannoplis Cannon Ballers or the Winston-Salem Dash in North Carolina.

FIVE MINUTES with ... 40 • AUG 22 Heading into his 24th year in education — and his 21st with Carroll ISD — it’s safe to say Ryan Wilson found his calling. Serving at Dawson Middle School for 20 years before becoming the principal of Carroll Senior High School, Ryan spent his first year at the senior high soaking up all of Carroll’s traditions, from signing days and homecoming to prom and graduation. With a new year on the horizon, the educator is ready to welcome back students and continue to pursue the district’s tradition of excellence.
I DO FEEL LIKE… [being a principal] was a job that I’d been working towards all along. Then after 13 years Dr. Ledbetter reached out to me and asked, ‘How would you feel about trying 11th and 12th graders?’
TO BE NAMED A SENIOR HIGH PRINCIPAL… was a very humbling experience because I think that is a very large role for an incredibly amazing school district like Carroll ISD. I was very excited. MY FIRST YEAR WAS … definitely one of observation for a number of reasons. I’m brand-new to the senior high. I’m not an immediate change agent. So I started filling journals with thoughts and notes about the things that I would want to improve upon. It’s already a phenomenal campus with a great culture, and that’s nothing you would want to mess up.
THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR… improvement. I would say the first and biggest thing is attendance. We’re having trouble coming back from COVID where it was allowable to learn from home or learn from school. I think there are still a good many kids who are ingrained that way and think that they can get as much done from home as they can from school. So our attendance took a hit. GRADUATION OVER THE SUMMER WAS REALLY… the ultimate first, to be able to be there for these seniors, these kids that are literally done with their K-12 public schooling career. To know that you’re at the helm of the planning process for that, to know that you are there to shake someone’s hand, give them their diploma and say, ‘You’re done with high school, congratulations.’ Wow. That was a serious rush and pretty cool to be there for the kids.
WHEN I CAN LOOK UPON THE… accomplishments of kids and know that I had some small part in supporting them to their accomplishments that absolutely refuels me. I get recharged [by] kids having an improved educational experience. That will be the reason I keep coming back and I keep wanting to do more to make their experience better.
Carroll Senior High School’s Principal Reflects On His Career With Carroll ISD
COMING OUT OF COLLEGE, I… had a love of two things: caring for kids and science. I put those two things together as a middle school science teacher, and I taught middle school science for six years.
GETTING THAT FIRST JOB [AT LEWISVILLE ISD] WAS… completely frightening and fantastic all at the same time. Being able to be the one that’s giving tests instead of taking them was great. But more importantly, realizing I found something I would be able to do for a lifetime.
I FIRST SET FOOT IN CARROLL ISD… in 2002. George Dawson Middle School was opening and Jenny Wilson, my beloved wife of 22 years, was to be an eighth-grade math teacher on that campus. I came to help her move from what was then Carroll Junior High School on White’s Chapel.
WHILE I WAS HELPING HER… move into that building, the first principal of Dawson, Mr. Jerry Hollingsworth, asked where I taught. I told him… and he said, ‘No you’re not. You’re a middle school science teacher at Dawson Middle School.’ And I said, ‘OK.’ So it was by way of my wife and helping her move in and the rather aggressive but wonderful nature of Dawson’s first principal that I came to work here in Carroll. I DECIDED I… would try administration as the only assistant principal back in 2005. Those years were tremendous growth years for me… after having done that for three years, the then-principal of Dawson Middle School retired. Thankfully people like Dr. David Faltys agreed to go ahead and put me in the principal seat in 2008.

CARROLL ISD’S STEAM CENTER HOUSES THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FULL STEAM AHEAD BY DAVID DUNN
Kim Goodman, the career and technical education department chair, saw the space while it was being de veloped and says it was exciting to see how much it changed in just under a year. “Walking back into it after all of the construction was done was pretty fascinating — how they were able to reconstruct those walls, move things around and open up the space in places that were previously closed off before,” Kim says. “It was amazing to see how much they were able to do with all of that reconfiguration.”
The first thing visitors will notice upon entering the STEAM facility is the robotics area, which has two are nas dedicated to testing and operating robots and four workshop benches where students could build their mechanisms. Leah says those performance arenas have made a big difference, allowing the Dragons to host league events on campus.
“When we were at the senior high, we would have to carry everything down to the cafeteria, set up, take things down and store them every time we would want to have a competition or a scrimmage,” Leah says. “In the STEAM Center, we’re able to just keep those fields up and host competitions. It makes it so much easier.”
“That laser machine has been a real lifesaver as far as cutting polycarbonate for robots and rocket parts,” senior Tucker Johnson says. “It can cut any design that youBeforeneed.”the STEAM Center was built, students and their rockets were spread out across multiple class rooms, labs and even outdoors at Carroll Senior High School. But thanks to the STEAM Center, everything is
Arobotics lab with two arenas for students to operate, build and test their robots. A rocket lab boasting a laser cutter that slices through polycarbonate like butter. Workshops with every tool an engineer-in-the-making could ever need. With the recent addition of Carroll ISD’s STEAM Cen ter, students now have everything they need under one roof.“This facility as a whole has been transformative for our program,” robotics instructor Leah Schwedler says. “We always say that we moved into the mansion, so to speak.”Part of a $208 million bond package approved by voters back in 2017, the Carroll ISD STEAM Center is a 25,000-square-foot facility that brings all of its science, technology, engineering and math courses together under one collaborative wing at Carroll High School. With the former band hall previously occupying the space before renovation began last year, assistant su perintendent of operations Matt Miller says the facility was a perfect fit for the new STEAM Center. “The space already provided a lot of high-volume, big rooms, so it was simple to design and open it up for robotics, rockets and engineering to allow them to spread out a little bit,” Matt says. “The biggest chal lenge is how do you marry all of that — who do you put where while keeping it collaborative.”
A short distance ahead, two 18-foot-tall classrooms house the center’s engineering and rocket courses. Each classroom is equipped with cutting-edge tools, from industrial-grade bench drills and buzz saws to computerized laser cutters and engravers.
Tucker has experienced the full potential of the STEAM Center firsthand. Between his involvement in rockets, robotics and computer science, Tucker has really seen all of the programs skyrocket since mov ing into the center. “Each classroom really opens up to each other, which adds a lot of creativity, collaboration and coop eration between the different programs,” Tucker says. “The design makes it really clear that STEAM really all flows and connects together. Every classroom in this facility is just one working part of the whole machine that is AndSTEAM.”evenmore exciting developments are on the horizon. Thanks to all of the tools and resources avail able, Kim says new courses like welding and cyberse curity will be added this school year. “We’re going to see a lot more growth now that we have the space for the whole picture,” Kim says. “You can really see the exciting new directions that STEAM is moving into.”
“The biggest issue we had with growing our pro gram in the past was that everything felt so separate,” Rachel says. “That’s not the case anymore. Every sin gle program is now in the same area, so kids are able to be more involved and see what’s going on between all of our different programs. Instead of us telling the students what rockets or robotics is like, they now get to see it for themselves and decide what they want to pursue next year.”
56 • AUG 22 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE much more centralized, and students have room to move around and work on their rockets. “It used to be hard to have students working on 15 rockets at a time in class,” instructor Rachel Mahlow says. “This year, it isn’t difficult at all to have 30 rock ets being built at a time. Having that space gives the kids the freedom to work much more efficiently.”
Down the hall, there are six computer labs where students can work on designing and coding their projects. Next door is the 3D printing room complete with 10 machines that can produce more than enough parts to keep STEAM students happy. Plus, two break out conference rooms with Promethean Smart Boards are available for students to review designs and give presentations.“Youhaveall of the tools and knowledge necessary to create something great through rockets, robot ics and coding,” Tucker says. “Creativity isn’t limited here.”Since moving into the new facility last fall, Leah says she’s already seen the impact the STEAM Center has had on robotics. In years past, the program has sent three teams to the VEX Robotics World Cham pionships, which regularly draws over 3,000 teams from 36 nations. This year, they sent eight teams to the competition, with five of them going for the first time.“That’s the most of any organization in the world,” Leah says. “Four teams even made it to the elimina tion rounds, which is practically unheard of.” But Rachel’s favorite thing about the STEAM Cen ter is how it brought all of the different wings of sci ence, engineering and technology together.

District
As California’s residents make the move to Texas, so too do its restaurants. District, a West Coast-based concept, opened a new location in Addison earlier this spring.
“Addison’s got a great vibe as far as what District is all about,” says chef-partner Aaron Staudenmaier. “It’s a great social place, it’s a place to gather for drinks, it’s a food hub. This specific area of Addison feels like District already.”
The Addison location is District’s first outside of the Golden State. The restaurant is a homegrown, down-toearth concept focused on making great experiences for its guests. “District is, at heart, a local bar that has some really good food,” Aaron says. As guests enter the establishment, they are im mediately greeted with a large horseshoe-shaped bar that serves as a gathering centerpiece for enjoy ing great drinks, food and interactions. From there, half the restaurant offers high-top seating while the other half harkens back to a speakeasy with comfy settees and oversized chairs. District’s dog-friendly patio is also open year-round and is surrounded by large glass doors that the restaurant keeps open whenever the weather allows. As you slip into your seat, take a gander at the restaurant’s drink menu. Plenty of delicious options ensure every choice is the right one.

“When you talk about great food, you talk about a great wine list,” Aaron says. “That does not necessarily mean the most expensive thing on the planet. There is a lot of food and wine out there that is really fantastic but still very approach able. And we try to make sure that we can meet our goal of being a daily hangout for a certain type of person by not go ing insane on the wine list.” With a half-dozen sparkling wine varieties and dozens of white, rose and red bottles available, every bite of food comes paired with a great sip. Some of the options include SIMI Chardonnay, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon and Daou Rose. As for its whiskey offerings, guests can sip on a glass of Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year, Kentucky Owl Rye 11 Year and Macallan 18, among other selections. When it comes to mealtime, District is open for both lunch and dinner, and guests can expect elevated bar food. “The menu is approachable, although we do add a couple of adventurous little twists here and there,” Aaron says. Instead of mozzarella sticks as an appetizer, guests can dig into crispy squash blossoms with goat cheese filling, wild arugula and Aleppo pepper agrodolce while tater tots turn into sweet potato pakoras, made with crispy chickpea batter, zucchini sweet onion and jalapeno-lime cream. “About 50% of our menu here in Addison is a Texas cre ation,” Aaron says. “Being here in the heart of Texas, we needed to meatify our menu a little bit. We added some beef short ribs, steak, things like that. We also increased our sea food program just a bit, so the menus are actually fairly, sig nificantly different.”
throw back to California, but realistically, District Addison is an experience unto itself.”
Those heartier meat options include dishes like Korean BBQ pork belly with a gochujang glaze, kelp kimchi and grilled scallion, and lamb meatballs made with Moroccanspiced lamb, chermoula, tomato sauce and manchego cheese. On the seafood side, ahi tuna poke is served with passion fruit dressing, avocado, seaweed, black furikake and crispy sushi rice while the pan-seared gulf shrimp comes complete with Spanish chorizo, smoked tomato sauce and sweet corncreamer pea succotash. “It’s all the traditional favorites with a fun spin on them,” Aaron says. “I think we’re doing really well.”
The Come And Take It features Texas Ranger Whiskey, Cherry Heering, Amaro Nonino and fresh orange, and the Briar Patch showcases Ford’s Gin, Cassis Liqueur, Creme de Violette and fresh mint. For those looking for a light and fruity drink, the Pretty In Pink combines Nue Vodka, elder flower liqueur, ruby red grapefruit and fresh lime. District also has an extensive whiskey and wine list, thanks in part to the on-staff sommelier who ensures only the best wines make it to the table.
If you can’t get enough of District during lunch and din ner, then make plans to stop by during Saturday brunch. Alongside your mimosa or bloody mary, the concept serves up both familiar and new breakfast dishes like chicken and waffles and brunch pizzas. “We’re just glad to be here,” Aaron says. “We enjoy mak ing people happy.”
If you’re looking for a less-expensive taste of Italy that doesn’t involve hopping on a plane, just head over to Dolce Riviera in downtown Dallas. The Italian restaurant, which reopened earlier this spring after a two-year hiatus, is reminiscent of the Mediterranean with its coastal decor, delicious food and upscale drinks. “It was one of the most anticipated reopenings for us as a company because the restaurant is very dear to us,” says Warren Richards, the vice president of hospitality at Harwood Hospitality Group. “It’s really a special place, and bringing it back was an ambition everyone had.”
The restaurant exudes the highly sought-after coastal classic aesthetic with light blues, browns and pops of yel low. But the hallmark lies in a large lemon tree located in the middle of Dolce Riviera’s air-conditioned patio. Once you’re finished oohing and aahing over the decor, it’s time to take a seat and sip on delicious craft cocktails. The restaurant’s take on an espresso martini, the Vespa Zoom, comes with Absolut Vanilla Vodka, Mr. Black’s Cof fee, espresso and simple syrup for a drink rich with flavor. Meanwhile, the Amalfi Sun features Avion Silver Tequila, cucumber and agave syrup for a fresh-tasting drink. Start off your meal with an appetizer like polpettine, made with house-made meatballs, parmesan polenta cakes and ricotta, before moving on to the main course with classic Italian dishes like lasagna and branzino. One of the most popular dishes is the veal Milanese, which is served with arugula, roasted tomato, lemon and par mesan. The restaurant, which also offers brunch on the week ends, makes all of its pasta by hand, with gluten-free op tions also available. You can rest assured knowing that dishes like the fettuccine Bolognese or the cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper) are going to be satisfying and deli cious.Make sure you order dessert before you leave. Your taste buds will thank you after trying options like the bomboloni, a combination of Italian doughnuts, choco late mousse and blackberry marmellata, or the tiramisu made with mascarpone mousse, espresso, lady fingers and“We’vecocoa. been overjoyed with the number of people who’ve wanted to come and experience the restaurant,” Warren says.
