The Tip of the Iceberg “Every day is an opportunity to expect perfection.” One would expect these simple but profound words from an interview with a Carroll coach or from an inductee of the Dragon Hall of Honor. But they didn’t come from either—they came from a young man who still has the combination to a locker at Carroll Senior High School. One he stuffs with AP textbooks. The words came from standout student-athlete Benjamin Shou. The Carroll senior has been figure skating since he was six years old, and it shows. After an impressive top-five finish at the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the National AP scholar was then honored as a member of the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Association’s Scholastic Honors Team. All of the awards and accolades are just the tip of the iceberg for such impressive scholar-athletes like Shou and his classmates at Carroll ISD. Just below the surface are the early mornings, late nights and failed practice runs. Just like the majority of an iceberg floating at sea, the daily bumps and bruises that make up an award-winning scholar-athlete’s day are recognized by very few. During the editing of this quarter’s issue of Dragon Pride, his words stuck out immediately. Strict enough to seize the day, yet merciful enough for tomorrow’s hope, these eight simple words are the foundation for success in any stage of life. Sage words indeed from a bright teen with a bright future ahead.

Yours in Dragon Pride,

FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

Dragon Boys Basketball focuses on playoff berth.

05

Eric McDade is in his fourth year as head coach. And while the boys basketball program has seen some success in his tenure, it remains a work in progress. The Dragons have missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons and haven’t won a district title since 2002. Southlake Carroll currently sits at 13-12 overall, and is in a dogfight to end its postseason hiatus. But with some late season progress, there is plenty to be optimistic about. “We just want to continue to progress as a program,” McDade says. “I feel like our program has been on the rise. We just have to play a little bit better. But overall, we’ve been pleased with the way we’ve been able to progress.” If there is one thing McDade knows how to do, it’s win. Prior to arriving at Southlake Carroll, McDade was considered one of the best coaches in the state. He led his teams to the playoffs in 12 of his 13 seasons as head coach, including a trip to the 2009 Class 4A state tournament at Mansfield Timberview. Despite not having much playoff success at Southlake Carroll, McDade has formed a solid foundation in a program that has made incremental improvements. Every year under his watch, Southlake Carroll has finished .500 or better. The Dragons, however, knew they had somewhat of an uphill battle this year after losing its two leading scorers in Kirk Mason and Hunter Summy. Still, McDade says he’s been impressed with how his team has come together.

“Leadership and experience should keep helping this team,” McDade says. “They have a point of reference. They know about the grind and have experience. They know they can’t take anything for granted in district or get overconfident. They understand the magnitude of every game.” Southlake Carroll opened its 2015-16 season with a loss to Justin Northwest but showed some promise in the Magnolia Tournament in Houston as it split games and took down Katy Morton Ranch and Clear Springs. The next three games served as gut punches for the Dragons. Southlake Carroll fell to both Grapevine and Plano West in overtime and missed an opportunity to knock off Trophy Club Byron Nelson in a four-point loss. Southlake Carroll, however, rebounded in the Lions Club Tournament, defeating both El Paso Andress and Converse Judson before falling to Cedar Hill. After back-to-back wins over Houston Madison and Mansfield, Southlake Carroll looked like it was on the verge of a breakthrough. Unfortunately for McDade and his squad, the Dragons took a wrong turn and suffered three straight losses to North Crowley, Parkview (Ark.) and Arlington Martin to close out non-district play. “I think particularly in non-conference play, it’s really important to assess where you are,” McDade says. “You have to play strong competition to make sure you’re ready for district play and the grind of that. And we did play a really tough schedule. “We played some of the best competition in the state. Region I in general has some of the best basketball and the Metroplex is loaded with talent. So we felt like we got ready for district.” Senior guard Cooper Osburn adds: “I think it’s helped us in district with end of game scenarios. We played a lot of athletic teams. Our district has some guards that are filling it up, but the non-district helped us by playing high level competition, so we can play with anyone in the state.” Osburn is one of three three-year senior lettermen on this team—the other two are guard Tyson Smiter and guard/forward Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Fellow senior Joey McCormick has also been a big presence down low. Their wealth of experience should come in handy as Southlake Carroll gets into the meat of district play. Humphrey joined the team after a stellar senior season on the field. The 6-foot-5,

The Dragons were in a similar position at this point in the year last season but failed to make the playoffs. But this season’s team just has a different vibe. “It’s been tough because you’re right there, and you don’t get over the hump,” Smiter says. “This year, we’re in the same place. Being that last year we didn’t make the playoffs, it’s a different mindset because you know you have to go hard in the second half of district or you won’t be in the playoffs.” Coming off back-to-back district wins, Smiter adds that the team goal is to win out and head into the playoffs on a nine-game winning streak. But McDade doesn’t want the team to get too far ahead of itself. His golden rule: Take it one game at a time. “The biggest key for us now is to just take it one game at a time,” McDade says. “We just want to stay in the moment and not look ahead. We want to enjoy the year, play our best basketball in this stretch run and create some excitement.”

200-pounder racked up more than 2,000 yards of total offense and holds scholarships from California, Wisconsin, Texas and others. With a little more than a month under his belt, Humphrey, who is the team’s top scorer, feels like he is now in full basketball mode. “The biggest thing I had to get done was get my legs back,” Humphrey says. “I had to regain my ability to jump and get back my conditioning. I feel like I did that pretty fast, and now I’m focused on helping my team win.” Southlake Carroll currently sits at 3-2 in district play after knocking off Richland, Colleyville Heritage and Haltom. Both of the Dragons’ losses to Euless Trinity and Coppell came by a combined four points. With a little more luck, Southlake Carroll could easily be undefeated in district play. Smiter believes the team just needs to correct a few minor issues in order to avoid dropping key games down the stretch. “Those two games we lost to Trinity and Coppell, we lost on our own,” he says. “We turned the ball, missed free throws and did those types of things that you can’t do. Coming into the second half, we just have to correct those things.”

Lil’Jordan Posts Big Stats Behind Lil’Jordan Humphrey, the 2015 7-6A Offensive Player of the Year, Southlake Carroll’s football team averaged 42 points per game. The bruising 6-5 athlete left it all out on the field for head coach Hal Wasson accounting for 2,182 yards of total offense and 22 touchdowns. Humphrey rushed at an impressive 7.1 yards per carry for 1,306 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also topped the team with 57 receptions, eight of which were for scores. When it comes to basketball, Lil’Jordan’s just as potent. He is head coach Eric McDade’s top returning scorer from the 2014-15 season.

Teri Morrison’s team is fighting for another championship. By EJ Holland Photos by Stewart Johnson

District Dominance

11

Expectations are always high for any athletic program at Southlake Carroll. But that rings especially true for girls. The Lady Dragons have captured district titles every season since head coach Teri Morrison came over from Hewitt Midway seven years ago. But with the loss of key players like point guard Kennedy Leonard, who signed with Colorado upon graduation, this season’s expectations should be tempered. “I thought we would maintain a pretty competitive team,” Morrison says. “But we knew we were going to struggle with our point guard position. We’ve done some good things, but we’ve struggled with inexperience. I thought we would be at around 17-8 right now.” Instead, Southlake Carroll sits at 14-11 overall through its first 25 games and are still trying to find their way as a team. Morrison is confident her team can put it all together before the end of district play, especially after undergoing a rigorous non-conference schedule. The Lady Dragons looked like they were going to pick up right where they left off last season after thrashing Keller Central, 64-18, in the season opener and getting off to a 4-1 start, with their only loss coming in a close battle with Argyle. But Southlake Carroll faced plenty of adversity in the Allen Tournament, falling to both Plano and San Antonio Wagner. Things wouldn’t get much better for Southlake Carroll as it dropped its next two games to Grapevine and Arlington Bowie.

After an impressive showing in the Canyon Tournament that saw Southlake Carroll take down Canadian, Wylie and Abilene Wylie, the Lady Dragons again dropped back-to-back games— this time to Keller and McKinney North. With a gauntlet of a slate and a younger team still trying to gel, Southlake Carroll failed to find any consistency. “We probably played one of the toughest non-district schedules,” Morrison says. “We played seven ranked teams and beat four of them. Our schedule was tough, and I was happy with the way our team played. “If you play against the best, you have to find a way to contain them and play with them. What we learned is you can’t take plays off. You have to be ready to take the ball up court and play defense. It was a grind and we survived it.” Southlake Carroll used the experience it garnered in the preseason to catch fire at the start of district play, winning games against Haltom, Hurst L.D. Bell, Coppell and Richland—the Lady Dragons also defeated Wolfforth Frenship and Brock in the Mansfield Rotary Invitational during the holidays. District play, which is often referred to as the second season, is when Southlake Carroll thrives, and Morrison says she is proud of the way her team performed in the four victories.

“We’ve played extremely well,” Morrison says. “We’ve been rebounding well, scoring well and our free throw percentage has been good. We’re still working on protecting the ball, but overall, we were really happy with our 4-0 start.” Morrison has also been pleased with the rise of junior guard Priscilla Smeenge. The Lady Dragons’ leading scorer, Smeenge, has been a force all season, averaging 15.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.6 assists per game. “She plays great on both the offensive and defensive end,” Morrison says. “She works extremely hard. She puts in the extra effort after practice. She stays long hours. Other players go home after practice, and Priscilla doesn’t. She’s fun to coach.” Southlake Carroll has also received a boost in district play from the leadership of seniors Anna Hurlburt, who is committed to Arkansas Little Rock, and Natalie Flexer. Hurlburt has been one of the area’s best post players, averaging 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, while Flexer has chipped in with 4.2 points per game and stellar play on defense from her guard spot. “Natalie has provided great support to our young players,” Morrison says. “She’s not one of our top scorers, but she’s a captain and everyday she gets better. In the games that we’ve struggled, she’s provided a lot of positive support. “Anna has been a great leader as well. She’s a 6-foot-2 post, and she’s one of our assists leaders. Her transition game is very good. I’ve been very pleased with her and what she’s been able to do this year.” Despite the fast start, Southlake Carroll lost its first district game since December of 2012 when Euless Trinity pummeled the Lady Dragons, 54-29. “It’s been a long time since we lost a district game,” Morrison says. “Trinity just outplayed us. We were shell-shocked. In district, you have to win those games. Our new kids have to understand the importance of winning district games.” Southlake Carroll dropped its next district game as well, falling to Colleyville Heritage, 54-47, just three days later. In order for the Lady Dragons to rebound from the defeats, its underclassmen need to step up in a big way. Freshmen Kayla Colan, Rachel Seyler and Gabby McBride have all been contributors on varsity this season. “Those three freshmen are all impact players for us,” Morrison says. “We lost our sophomore Brooke Lay for the season, which makes it even more important for these freshmen to step up and grow up in a hurry. I didn’t think we would have three freshmen on the court, but I’m very happy with their progress.” With their backs against the wall, it’s time for the Lady Dragons to rise for the occasion. A district title is still not out of the picture as Southlake Carroll will have the opportunity to avenge their losses to Euless Trinity and Colleyville Heritage later in the year. But more importantly, the Lady Dragons need to close out the season strong in order to secure a playoff spot. Only half a dozen games remain, and Southlake Carroll currently sits in third place. “We need to continue to work on protecting the ball and eliminating turnovers,” Morrison says. “I expect them to keep coming together as a team. We want to win out to be district champions. We want to keep that streak alive. But our No. 1 goal is play every game and leave it on the floor.”

Smeenge’s Stat Stuffing The Lady Dragons’ captain and leading scorer, 6’-0” guard Priscilla Smeenge, has been stuffing the stat sheet all season long. The returning All-District performer is averaging 15.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.6 assists per game.

SEASON RECAP ABOUT THE TEAMS Coming off of a state championship in the 2014-15 season, the Southlake Carroll boys Cross Country team set out to repeat as champions in 2016. Falling just short of their goal, the Dragons finished second in the state behind champion Conroe the Woodlands, and leave this season with plenty to hang their hat on. Junior Reed Brown had yet another strong year for the boy’s teams as he finished no worse then 16th in each competition this year, as well as a first-place finish in the Nike Cross Regionals to go along placing 14th in the Nike National Meet. Junior Charlie Gardener also made waves in the Nike Regional meet, finishing in fourth place with a time of 17:13 in the 500 meters. With Carroll’s top two runners returning next season, it’s hard not to fathom a push towards a state championship next year. After placing fourth in the State Meet last year, the Dragon girls Cross Country team improved during the 2015-16 season as they finished second in the state behind champion Flower Mound Marcus. Senior Kayli Jones ran her third fastest time of the season in the 5,000 meter state meet finishing with a time of 19:18.81. Sophomore Catherine Tracht proved to make headlines across the state of Texas as she finished 21st in the UIL State Regional Meet, to go along with finishing 24th in the UIL State meet.

The Southlake Carroll Cross Country boys and girls teams enjoyed a successful 2015 season, training hard and winning often. Both teams showed their depth and fought fierce competitors in a tough season. - Head Coach Justin Leonard

What a year it’s been for the Southlake Carroll Cross Country team. Known nationally as one of the top Cross Country programs in all of high school, the Dragons put together yet another dominant season. The boys celebrated many firstplace finishes throughout the season, winning both the District and Regional Championships en route to taking second at the very rainy, very muddy State Championship meet. Following their secondplace finish at Round Rock, Justin Leonard’s Cross Country team finished second at the Nike Cross Regionals, qualifying for the prestigious Nike Cross Nationals yearend meet in Portland, Oregon, where they finished in 16th place with a total team score of 344. The Carroll girl’s team fought hard and also enjoyed many successes this season, beating many tough competitors on their way to another dominant season. Taking top honors at the District meet and qualifying for the State Championship Meet, the Lady Dragons finished in second place, missing out on a state title by just nine points. After wining the Nike Cross Regionals, earning them a spot to compete in the National meet in Oregon, the Lady Dragons finished in 15th place with a total team score of 340.

SEASON RECAP The Carroll Dragon Volleyball team and second-year Head Coach Ryan Mitchell had lots of expectations heading into the 2015 season. After finishing 43-4 in 2014, losing in the regional semifinal round to state semifinalist Amarillo, the Lady Dragons had the near impossible task of returning back to form while replacing four seniors, who now play on the collegiate level. With a new cast of characters and a plethora of talented players in the Dragon Volleyball community, Mitchell’s team reloaded, where most teams would have had to rebuild. Led by four First Team All-District performers, including MVP Haley Hallgren, the Lady Dragons took home their second straight district title under Coach Mitchell. The Dragons’ playoff run was nothing short of spectacular as the team won their bi-district matchup and then beat Allen in four games to win the Area Championships. The season ended at the hands of McKinney Boyd in Regional Quarterfinals in five games. The Lady Dragons played nearly perfect the whole season, as they posted a (10-0) record at home, while only losing one game on the road. Defeating a plethora of ranked teams in the process, Southlake Carroll finished the season just short of their State Championship goals. However, the future looks even brighter as all but three players will return in 2016.

ABOUT THE TEAM The Lady Dragons have been a staple in the Texas volleyball community for many years and aren’t looking to slow down any time soon. With another successful season in the books, Ryan Mitchell’s team has yet again exceeded expectations, with plenty of young talent returning in 2016. Ranked 12th in the nation by MaxPreps, the green and white were led by district 7-6A MVP and USC commit, Haley Hallgren, who led the team in kills (350), while finishing tied for second on the team in digs (244). Sophomore Middle Blocker Asija O’Neal provided a huge lift for the Dragons this season as she led the team in block shots (85) and kill percentage (51.8%), while finishing second on the team in kills with 319. The much-heralded underclassman was honored as the district’s Blocker of the Year. Senior Libero Brayden Gruenewald proved to be a service specialist as she finished her final season with the Lady Dragons leading the team in aces with 35, while finishing second on the team in points behind junior Lisie Kit with 233. Gruenewald and fellow seniors Megan Porter and Remy Fairchild each picked up First Team All-District honors.

The season ended a bit earlier than we would have all wanted, but as I look back at the development of each of the girls and see their improvement throughout the season, I am proud of this group of young women. - Head Coach Ryan Mitchell

ABOUT THE TEAM When talking about successful high school sports programs across the nation, Southlake Carroll’s swimming and diving has epitomized true dominance at the high school level. Since 2010, Head Coach Kevin Murphy’s teams have struck fear in opponents throughout the state on their way to being recognized as a national powerhouse. Making waves on every level across the country, Coach Murphy’s teams hold five consecutive state championships while his boys team ended the 2014-2015 season ranked first amongst public schools by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. The Lady Dragons finished third in the public school rankings in the same poll, while ranking 20th in the public and private school poll. The Carroll program (boys and girls) finished sixth in the nation. As coach Kevin Murphy has built another dynasty in the city of Southlake, it’s become normal for the Carroll program to dominate year after year. Currently, both the boys and girls teams sit undefeated as they prepare for district meets. Don’t be surprised if the Dragons dominate the competition once again for an unprecedented 6th straight state championship.

How we fare through the District 10-6A Meet in one week and the Region 3-6A Meet in three weeks will go far to determining exactly where our Dragon girls fit in UIL Texas 6A Swimming & Diving competition in Austin in five weeks. - Head Coach Kevin Murphy

S E A S O N U P DAT E The Dragons Swimming and Diving team has had much success this season as both the boys and girls teams have cruised to an undefeated season at 12-0, and Sr. -0 respectively. Having won every meet so far this season, Kevin Murphy’s team heads into district competition as confident as ever. The Dragon Boys took home the Mansfield Invitational Trophy by an impressive nearly 600-point margin. The team set a few records along the way including one in the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Alex Morau, JP Reppeto, Alex Zettlle and Landon Jensen finished with a time of 1:38.27. In addition, the boys 200-meter free relay team also established a new meet record at Mansfield as the team of Landon Jensen, Landon Armstrong, Logan Davis and Zach Lowery finished the competition in 1:28.36. The girls team has already gotten its revenge against last year’s 6A State champion Austin Westlake, defeating them by 64 points in the North Tisca Invitational Swim/ Dive Meet earlier this season. With three meets left, the Dragons look to end 2016 on top once again.

S E A S O N U P DAT E After winning 20-plus games last year, the Lady Dragons have a long way to go to get back to that mark, as they currently are 14-11, (4-2) this year. Sitting in fourth place in district 7-6A after losing to undefeated district opponent Euless Trinity and Colleyville Heritage in back-to-back contests, Teri Morrison’s ball club will have to make adjustments after losing sophomore point guard Brook Lay to an undisclosed season-ending injury. Lay, whose 2.0 assist per game placed third on the team, while leading the team in three point percentage and free throw percentage at 43% and 86% respectively, will be missed. Forced into a point guard by committee strategy, Morrison’s squad will rely on senior Natalie Flexer and freshman Kayla Colan to handle the majority of ball-handling duties as the Dragons move to finish up the season. Having played much better on the road (8-5) than away this season (3-4), Morrison’s team has been nothing short of potent offensively as they rank in the top 20 in the area in points per game at 45.4 ppg. With six games left in the 2015-2016 regular season, the Dragons look to make a push as Teri Morison’s team looks to win its eight straight district title under Morrison, and return back to the playoffs.

ABOUT THE TEAM Having won seven consecutive district tiles under Head Coach Teri Morrison, the Lady Dragons basketball program has been nothing short of excellent in recent memory. Heading into the 2015-16 year filled with promise and young talent, the Lady Dragons have had to endure the difficult task of replacing “All Everything” point guard and Carroll Senior High assists leader Kennedy Leonard. Although Southlake Carroll has had to replace one of the most decorated players in school history, Morrison returns junior Priscilla Smeenge and Anna Hurlburt, who finished last season second and third on the team in scoring. At 6’-0,” Smeenge has considerable length and talent, and has a great campaign thus far leading the team in most statistical categories. Currently 12th in the area in points scored with 379 and an average of 15.2 points per game, Smeenge has been a constant bright spot for the green and white leading the team in rebounding at 7.6, while averaging 2.6 assists per game. Not too far behind Smeenge in the points and rebound category is senior captain Anna Hurlburt. A deft passer for her position, the 6’-2” forward is second on the team in both points (13.0) ppg and rebounds (6.7) rpg, while leading the team in assists at 2.7 apg.

We are confident that when you see our teams play, whether it be a home contest, or on the road, you’ll recognize the product as Dragon Basketball. We may go about things in a slightly different fashion than some of the previous teams, but we will always strive to play up to the high standards of intensity and competitive greatness that have been the hallmarks of this program. - Head Coach Teri Morrison

S E A S O N U P DAT E The Southlake Carroll boys basketball team has had an up and down year as they enter the second half of the 201516 season with a (11-11) record. With a few key players missing early season action, the team has been able to stay afloat thanks to some senior leadership. With a 4-2 conference record, they are currently second in behind Coppell (6-0). After losing three in a row at the Whataburger Classic, including a three-point overtime loss to No. 12 team in the state Klein Forest, McDade’s squad has rebounded tremendously, winning three of their first five district games. With a (3-2) record in district with seven games left in the regular season, the Dragons only sit two games behind first place Coppell, who defeated the Dragons by only one point in their meeting earlier in district play. Led by senior Joey McCormick, who’s averaging 15.3 ppg through five district matchups, look for the mentally tough Dragons to continue their strong push towards postseason play.

ABOUT THE TEAM The Carroll Dragon Boys Basketball team enters this year trying to achieve new heights. After missing the postseason in 2015, head coach Eric McDade is looking to lead his team to the playoffs. Having lost two of their top three scorers from last year’s team, the Dragons haven’t had much trouble rebuilding as they currently sit in second place in district 7-6A behind district foe Coppell. Leading the way is 6’-6” Senior Joey McCormick, who is tops on the team in both scoring (12.6) ppg and rebounding (5.6) rpg. He’s a shot-blocking force in the middle on defense while shooting 44 percent from the field. After missing the first eight games of the season due to his football responsibilities, 6’-5” forward Lil’ Jordan Humphrey has quickly returned to form for McDade’s ball club. The senior has added a much-needed scoring punch and is currently second on the team in points per game (8.0), while corralling almost five rebounds per game. Point guard Cooper Osburn has picked up right where he left off in 2015, leading the Dragons in assists once again at 3.0 per game, while shooting 34 percent from behind the three-point line.

I think so far we’ve got a great group of guys with great chemistry, we’ve played well defensively, and we have been able to string a few games together. I’m definitely enjoying watching this group grow. – Head Coach Eric McDade

S E A S O N U P DAT E Coach Joesph Hathaway’s Dragon Wrestling team has had a very good year. With one individual tournament left before its District meet and UIL postseason play, the Dragons have posted an impressive 11-1 record. Currently ranked third in the state, behind Allen and Arlington Martin, according to WrestlingTexas.com, the Dragons have put together a slew of great team efforts. One of Hathaway’s best teams in recent memory, this year’s squad took its regular season prowess to new heights. With a well-rounded roster at all-weight classes, Hathaway’s club capped off an impressive undefeated district season after winning the District Dual Team Championship at Keller’s Timber Creek High. And as the stage got bigger, so too, did the team’s performance. Carroll recently achieved its best performance in program history, coming in third place at the 6A State Dual Championships in Houston. In addition to the many successes at the dual level, the Dragons have also flourished in individual competitions. On the year, 42 competitors placed in meets including 20 finalists and nine champions. In doing so, the Dragons look poised to continue their successes at the state championships held February 19-20 at Cypress-Fairbanks ISD’s Berry Center in Houston.

ABOUT THE TEAM Boasting 16 All-State wrestlers since 2010, the Dragon wrestling program has produced a flurry of talent throughout Hathaway’s tenure. With names such as Robert Prigmore, Steven McPeek and 2014 champion Michael Basler all doing their part to help build the reputation of the Dragon program, Hathaway has seen record numbers join the roster. With plenty of young talent on this season’s roster, the Dragon faithful’s present and future look extremely bright. Currently, six Dragon wrestlers in six different weight classes are ranked in the TexasWrestling.com state rankings. Senior Jack Duval is currently ranked fourth in the 160 lbs. class and has had a great season with a couple of first place finishes to his name. Sophomores Cameron Haddock and Andrei Steinjann have also had great campaigns as they rank 7th and 10th in the state in the 126 lbs. and 138 lbs. classes, respectively. Juniors Adam and Aron Lindberg rank 8th and 10th in the state at the 170 lbs. and 152 lbs. weight classes, while senior Heavyweight Lucas Tribble ranks 8th in the state at 285 lbs.

This has been a great year for our team to this point. They have been growing all year and are really starting to put it all together. Our aim is to peak in February, and we are on track for another great post-season run. I’m proud of the effort and dedication our kids have shown throughout the year, and I’m looking forward to a strong finish. - Coach Joseph Hathaway

itchell took over as head volleyball coach at Southlake Carroll in 2014 after leading Lovejoy to a 315-55 record and five consecutive state titles (2008-2012). Simply put, Mitchell is a winner, and that championship pedigree is something he wants to instill at Southlake Carroll. The Dragons already had one of the best volleyball programs in the state prior to bringing on Mitchell. After two seasons at the helm of the Lady Dragons, he has a 86-8 (.915) record including an undefeated (12-0) district championship this season. But Mitchell’s goal isn’t to just win; he wants to take Southlake Carroll to the next level. And that means competing in and winning state championships. “The vision here is to create an experience where players walk away women of integrity and character,” Mitchell says. “But we also want them to have competed for championships year in and year out. Yes, we’re going to win a lot of matches here, but we want it to go beyond that.” “We want players to be proud that they were a part of the program. And a part of that is winning state championships. I came here to win championships and help Southlake Carroll break through the barrier. That’s the goal, and that’s the plan,” he says. If the 2015 season was any indication of what’s to come, the future is certainly bright at Southlake Carroll. The Dragons finished the year ranked No. 12 nationally and No. 2 in the state, according to MaxPreps. The Lady Dragons proved worthy of their billing as they knocked off a number of state-ranked programs throughout the season. Without question, some of the best high school volleyball in the nation is played in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex.

“Texas in general is a hotbed of volleyball talent,” Mitchell says. “It’s right up there as the best of the country along with California. And so much of that talent is right here in the Metroplex. There are so many great teams here and so much talent. You can never take a night off or you’ll get beat.” And that especially rang true this season. Southlake Carroll got a taste of just how tough competition throughout the state was in non-district play as they faced off against not only Dallas-area powers but quality teams in Houston and San Antonio. The Lady Dragons opened up the season with a dominating 3-0 win over Richardson Pearce and overcame some adversity in a close 3-2 victory over Plano West before rattling off five straight victories in the Pearland Tournament. At 7-0, Southlake Carroll appeared to truly be one of the country’s elite teams. But the Dragons were humbled a bit as they lost two of their next four games to Clear Creek (2-0) and Plano (3-1). Facing a bit of adversity, the team really leaned on senior leader and outside hitter Megan Porter, who finished the season with 321 kills. The Texas State commit was named First-Team All District and to the Under Armour AllAmerican team. “Megan really helped lead the team this year,” Mitchell says. “All season long, she was the voice of the team. She held everyone accountable, and they followed her. Megan has such a sweet spirit, so she connected well to everyone on the team.” Senior leadership also came from fellow First Team All-District performers Brayden Gruenewald and Remy Fairchild, who helped guide the team back to form in the Allen Tournament, knocking off Frisco Independence, Rockwall, Wylie East, Highland Park and Colleyville Heritage—all games were set sweeps. The Dragons then defeated state-ranked Coppell, 3-1, in the semifinals before ultimately falling to Allen in the championship game. Southlake Carroll, however, would bounce back with a statement performance in the PSA Lone Star Circle of Champions Tournament as it got its revenge on Allen with a 2-0 set sweep and won the tournament title. The Dragons wrapped up non-district play by defeating Mitchell’s former program, Lovejoy, in a statement 3-0 victory and breezing by Rockwall and Trophy Club Byron Nelson. “My philosophy as a coach is in order to be the best you have to beat the best,” Mitchell says. “We schedule tough. We want to be battle-tested. We want to put our kids in situations where we have to compete night in and night out. We played in three of the toughest tournaments in the state to get ready for district.” Mitchell adds that he feels the team ‘got better each and every time we stepped on the court.’ And that certainly helped come district play. Heading into its first game against L.D. Bell, Southlake Carroll looked exactly the way a perennial power should. The Dragons pounded the Blue Raiders to win, 3-0. It was the first of 12 straight victories—all were 3-0 set sweeps with the exception of a 3-1 win over state-ranked Coppell in the finale. “After finishing second in district last year, we kind of reestablished the goal of winning another district title,” Mitchell says. “We were able to do that and do it in convincing fashion, which was a really neat experience. It’s something that we didn’t take lightly.” Southlake Carroll took down fellow nationally ranked program Dripping Springs in a playoff warm-up before starting the post season for real. The Dragons swept DeSoto in bi-district play and defeated a familiar opponent in Allen in the area round, 3-1. The Dragons’ season, however, came to a sudden halt in the regional quarterfinals when they were upset in the third round by McKinney Boyd—a team they swept in the area round a year ago—in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. “We were playing our best volleyball, but we had a lot of unforced errors in that game,” Mitchell says. “Any time you don’t reach your goal of winning a state championship, there is a hint of disappointment. But I’m proud of the girls and what they were able to do as a team and individually.” Southlake Carroll might not have reached the ultimate goal, but the vision remains the same. And Mitchell is already gearing up for next season. “I’m pumped,” he says. “Two weeks after the Boyd loss, I was already thinking about lineups and rosters. I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again. That’s what champions do. When you get knocked off a horse, you have to get back on it again.” The Dragons return a good nucleus of players, including outside hitter Haley Hallgren and middle blocker Asjia O’Neal. Hallgren was named the 7-6A District MVP this season after recording 350 kills and 244 digs and is currently committed to USC to play beach volleyball. O’Neal, the daughter of former NBA star Jermaine O’Neal, shined as a sophomore and was an underclassmen All-American. “With Haley, words don’t do her justice,” Mitchell says. “She’s a such a well-rounded player. She’s dynamic and her skillset sets her apart. Ajia developed over the season and was able to take over games later in the year.” With Hallgren and O’Neal back in the fold as well as a multitude of other experienced players, Southlake Carroll will once again be a preseason favorite to win the district title and make a deep playoff run. So what is it going to take for the Dragons to take the final step and get over the hump? “It starts with a belief that they can take the next step,” Mitchell says. “It’s getting there. We need to find ways to deal and manage expectations, so there isn’t pressure on our players and coaches come playoff time. We just have to keep working on that. “Every year we’re starting the year with an opportunity to win that state title. It will happen. We’re going to keep striving. We’re not going to be scared just because we could fall short.” DRAGON PRIDE

19 Dragons signed their athletic scholarships during a special ceremony this fall.

It was a normal Wednesday morning in November at Carroll Senior High School, unless you were part of the capacity crowd of family, friends, coaches and administrators who filled the Student Activity Center to watch dreams come true. It was National Signing day and 19 Dragons signed their letters of intent accepting athletic scholarships in everything from baseball to beach volleyball. Head Coach Larry Hughes’ baseball team led the way with four signees while the Dragon’s cross country, golf and volleyball team were represented by three signees each. It was one of the biggest classes ever, according to Phil Barber, a longtime member of Dragon Council.

DRAGON FIRE ON ICE GET TO KNOW BENJAMIN SHOU, ICE SKATER AND STUDENT EXTRAORDINAIRE. Nice on the ice doesn’t even begin to describe Benjamin Shou. He placed fifth at the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the most prestigious competition in the country. He was selected onto the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Association (USFSA) Scholastic Honors Team, received the USFSA’s Memorial Fund for three years, and is a six-time U.S. Figure Skating Special Achievements Awards Recipient. Oh, and he’s also a student set to graduate this spring from Carroll Senior High School. Shou is a National AP Scholar, a member of Mu Alpha Theta (a math honor society) and a National Honor Society Senator, among other accolades and involvements. What’s it like to be a skating all-star with a bright future ahead? Here’s what Shou has to say. Q: You’ve been skating since you were six years old. What do you love about the sport? A: Being on the ice is completely unlike anything else I have experienced. Skating allows me to be myself and to have that feeling of freedom and limitlessness. Skating also gives a certain satisfaction. While tough and painful, the feeling of accomplishment after finally landing a new jump or learning a new spin after months of hard work makes it all worth it. Q: What is your training schedule like when you’re preparing for a competition? A: I skate several hours after school as well as office strength and conditioning classes. It’s pretty taxing during the fall (when all of the qualifying competitions for Nationals are held) because of school. Basically my entire afternoon is at the rink. Q: How many times have you competed at Nationals? A: Four. Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2011; East Lansing, Michigan, in 2012; Boston, Massachusetts, in 2014; and Greensboro, North Carolina, in 2015. Q: Describe your emotions when you take the ice at a competition. What’s going through your mind? A: Despite the training, I still tend to get a little bit nervous at competitions. I try to focus on the things I’ve trained for and, rather than worrying about what place I end up in, think about how to do each element exactly as I trained them. Funny thing is, the nerves actually disappear the moment I step onto the ice. Once I start a program, I try to let my muscle memory take over rather than overthink everything. The most important thing for me to remember is to go through each element one by one and not think about a spin or jump 30 seconds later. Q: Give us an idea of a typical day for you. How do you balance sport and school? A: I don’t usually skate before school. I’m definitely not a morning person. I start school at 8 a.m. and

get out after third or seventh block every day because of my two off blocks. I then get some lunch usually on the way to the rink, where I train until 6 p.m. On some days I go to my trainer to work out. On Saturdays, I skate starting at 9:15 a.m. and coach Learn to Skate (at the Dallas Figure Skating Club) from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Balancing school and sport is really tough. I’ve taken 14 AP classes now so I have to be diligent in managing my time wisely. Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your figure-skating career? A: To never give up working towards my goals. It sometimes takes weeks, months or even years for the work that I’ve put in to actually show or represent something, whether that be qualifying for Nationals or landing a triple I’ve been working on. Q: What advice would you share with other athletes? A: Keep looking into the future and always strive to improve yourself. I know that I personally have looked back at my skating career and doubted myself and what I could do, but every day is an opportunity to expect perfection. I can say that this dedication is probably one of the most important, if not the most important quality that athletes should have if they want to excel. Q: When you’re not skating, what do you enjoy doing? A: Well, I am skating a lot of the time, but when I find some extra free time, I like to go for a run, enjoy good food, do something outdoorsy, or go hang out and watch a movie with friends. Q: Favorite class in school? A: Overall it’s definitely biology. Q: What are your long-term aspirations—on and off the ice? A: I’m looking to get into medical school. On the ice, I want to continue to skate during college and be a part of Team USA and Junior World Championship team.
