dog gone

Before we had children, Nicole and I were lucky enough to share a home with two cats. As much as we loved Bailey and Sammy, we don’t waiver in the realization we are dog people. At our magazine’s office or at the playing fields on weekends, if you’ve been around the Tesorieros, then you’ve met our top dogs Sparky and Rory.

We know you love your dogs too, and it showed through all of the photos submitted to our Stylin’ Pets photo gallery. Check out our favorites of your dogs around town this month. We especially liked the photo of our cover boy Trevor enjoying some family time in Southlake Town Square.

The famed American wildlife photographer and author Roger Caras was credited with saying, "dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole." This statement really hit home all too recently, as our family said goodbye to Sparky, the most loyal and loving friend we could ever have. For more than 12 years, he was by our side, even on road trips where he logged over 30,000 miles nestled in the cockpit of our RV headed to his favorite destinations in Colorado and New Mexico.

Good dogs will travel — and we all have so many photos to share. Thank you to the families who shared theirs with us this month. Our theme of “dogs around town” is in memory of Sparky and all the good dogs out there. Whether they are with us or after they are gone, our lives are forever changed for the better.

SOPHOMORE PERFORMS AT CARNEGIE HALL

Malaika Nair made a special trip to New York City for the High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie hall. In January, the Southlake Carroll sophomore joined performers from around the world and sang as an alto with the Honors Treble Choir. Studying music for over 10 years, Malaika is a member of several music groups, including the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas, the Texas Music Educators All-Region Concert Choir and Carroll’s varsity choir. “I am grateful to have been chosen to be a part of the Honors Performance Series and sing at Carnegie Hall in New York,” Malaika says. “I am so thankful for everyone who has supported me along the way, including my family, friends, directors and all my choir teachers.”

CARROLL ISD DEDICATES CAMPUS FACILITIES

Two Carroll ISD facilities were renamed during a recent Carroll ISD’s board of trustees meeting. The former head football coach and athletic director for the Carroll Dragons, Bob Ledbetter received the distinct honor of having the football field at Dragon Stadium renamed the Bob Ledbetter Field. But he wasn’t the only one honored — the CISD Aquatics Center was also named after Elise Cerami, who drowned in a swimming accident in 2016. “We share her story to raise awareness of water safety in hope of preventing drownings,” Swim4Elise founder and mother Lori Cerami says. “We believe Elise’s legacy continues to have a positive impact in our community, and we are grateful to the city of Southlake for highlighting our efforts.”

DEMARCUS WARE NAMED PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME FINALIST

The Dallas Cowboys’ all-time sacks leader is back on the ballot for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A Southlake resident and former linebacker, DeMarcus Ware is among 15 finalists being considered for the Hall’s class of 2023. A member of the Super Bowl 50 Champion Denver Broncos, DeMarcus was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection who accounted for 138.5 sacks during 12 seasons in the NFL. This is the second consecutive year DeMarcus has been named a finalist since he became eligible in 2022. The class of 2023 was unveiled on Feb. 9 during the NFL Honors’ broadcast on the NFL Network, NBC and Peacock.

DIGNITY FOR ALL TEXAS STUDENTS RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT

The Dallas Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation organization recently handed out $190,000 to 11 DFW organizations committed to diversity, equity and change — and Dignity For All Texas Students is one of the recipients. Receiving a $10,000 grant from the organization, Dignity For All Texas Students will be launching a newsletter, hosting quarterly community events and offering advocacy opportunities for students and community members this spring. You can learn more about the organization’s upcoming programming at DignityForAllTexasStudents.org.

GRACE DISTRIBUTES MEALS TO OVER 400 FAMILIES

GRACE Grapevine made a big difference in the community over the new year. During its annual food distribution program, the nonprofit provided meals to over 400 families in the community. Their food boxes included canned goods, eggs, butter, milk, cheese, meat and other delightful goods. Not only that, but the GRACE Christmas Cottage also benefited over 878 households last month, with as many as 80 families served in one day. You can help resupply their food pantry by visiting GRACEGrapevine.org and dropping off your donation at 837 E. Walnut Street.

YMSL BUILDS 70 BIKES FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

The Young Men’s Service League stayed busy over the winter break. During its annual Ultimate Gift Project, YMSL partnered with the nonprofit organization 6 Stones to deliver bikes and helmets to children in need. Over 150 boys and their mothers came together to build and deliver 70 bikes to HEB ISD, who in turn gifted the bikes and other presents to the families who needed them most. “The young men and moms of YMSL served over 400 hours to build bikes and assist with distributing them,” vice president of philanthropy Amy Troutman says. “It was an incredibly meaningful service project for our young men when they can collectively make a large impact for other teens in our area.”

CITY WINS TELECOMMUNICATION AWARDS

The Southlake Department of Public Safety always goes above and beyond with keeping the community up to date in fun and creative ways. Their PSAs recently caught the attention of the Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors as well, with the department winning not one, but six different awards. During the association’s 26th annual conference, the department won first place in the weather category for its parody video on Heart’s “Alone,” as well as second place for PSA with an operating budget under $250K for its DWI video. Both videos also won merit awards for storytelling and public education alongside its Citizen Survey video, as well as a special community segment featuring Southlake’s very own national fiddle champion Tristan Paskvan.

SOUTHLAKE FAMILY COMMUNITY OUTREACH ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED

A group of Southlake parents is coming together in an effort to unify the community through service. Founded by seven local families, the Southlake Family Community Outreach organization brings together mothers, fathers and children from seventh grade to high school to volunteer in the community. Collaborating with community partners including GRACE, House Of Shine, the Tarrant Area Food Bank, I Can Still Shine, the Miracle League and Run4Elise, there will be plenty of volunteer opportunities awaiting Southlake Family Community Outreach members this year. New members can sign up all month long at SouthlakeFCO.com.

The Carroll Theatre department cut loose last month with their successful spring musical "Footloose" based on the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon. I know! We rocked it in the 80s!”

From Hotel To Home

Fashion statements come and go — they just cost a lot more when you are looking to spruce up your home instead of your wardrobe. Just ask Driftwood Capital, the hotel ownership group of Southlake Hilton, who unveiled a monthslong renovation project late last year. Originally built in 2007, it was time for an update of the award-winning 248-room property. By incorporating a new contemporary style with a residential feel, Southlake's first hotel gives travelers a sense of home on the road. A new, stylish sense of home that can be yours with touches like these.

THE BRIGHT TIME

If you’ve been feeling the grays for quite a while, it's probably time. If your home still has a Tuscan palette and dark woods in play, then it is definitely time. Time for a lighter shade of wall color, that is. The Hilton said goodbye to its darker days by painting over the paneled walls and columns in the lobby with a lighter shade of cream. The entire space appears bigger, brighter and better for it.

POPS OF COLOR

After instilling a proper foundation in the lobby, the remodeling team opted for pops of vibrant colors to add visual excitement to the space. Colorful abstract art and a bold red couch invites the eye to gaze, while the latter's plush fabric and corresponding pillows invite weary souls to take a seat. Tufted blush-colored swivel chairs provide a wonderful conversation area that comes together thanks to the complementary tones of a whimsically-colored ornate area rug.

THE GOLDEN TOUCH

Accessories matter, and the Hilton team kept an eye out for detail. Gold-toned end tables, coffee tables and fixtures are found throughout and add a sense of luxury as styles have moved away from brushed nickels. Even the hotel’s guest rooms have brought in the gold colors most notably above the tufted fabric headboards.

A Lasting Legacy

BOB AND ALMEADY JONES’ PASSION FOR EDUCATION, BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY SET THE SCENE FOR SOUTHLAKE

When they married in 1875, Bob and Almeady Chisum Jones had a clear vision of what they wanted in life: an education for their children, a good living and friendships. They succeeded on all counts. The dramatic twist was that both Bob and Almeady had been born into slavery.

Their story, while not typical, illustrates that Black history is not a singular story of formerly enslaved people remaining downtrodden. Their accomplishments in education, business and community continue to resonate in Southlake today.

SETTLING IN WHAT IS NOW SOUTHLAKE

Just before the Civil War, Bob (1850-1936) was brought by his white father and enslaved mother to the Medlin settlement, just north of what became Roanoke. In 1858, Almeady (1857-1949), her enslaved mother and two siblings were left with cattle baron John Simpson Chisum as collateral for cattle being trailed west. Almeady grew up on the Chisum ranch near Bolivar (Denton County), and her mother told her Chisum was her father. Back then, Texas was the Wild West. After

the Civil War, to earn money for land and livestock, enterprising Bob joined cattle drives. Almeady had moved to Bonham, Texas, in 1871 with her mother and sister and was an accomplished seamstress.

After Bob and Almeady married, they lived in a log cabin in the Eastern Cross Timbers, in what’s now the Bob Jones Nature Center. As their family grew, they built onto their house, which burned in 1948.

Texas was a dangerous place for Black and mixedrace people. Bob and Almeady relied on resources and connections generally not available to others. Each grew up close to white people who taught them how to navigate the white world. Friendships with the Chisums, Medlins, Daggetts and other important North Texans no doubt helped protect them. And their home in the Eastern Cross Timbers, for a long time a tangle of trees and briars, was remote.

THE VALUE OF EDUCATION

Like other formerly enslaved people, Bob and Almeady knew that education made life better. They were determined that each of their 10 children would finish the eighth grade. Because “colored” schools

The city unveiled the Bob and Almeady Chisum Jones sculpture in Bob Jones Park in 2021. Sculptor Seth Vandable visits with Jones’ grandson William Larue Jones, a retired music professor. were scarce, they made sacrifices to educate their children. Some of the older children attended the Frederick Douglass School in Denton’s Quakertown, although living away from home was disruptive to the family’s ranching operation. Other times, teachers were hired and school was held at Walnut Grove Church (by 1902 renamed Mt. Carmel) or in a one-room building outside the family’s kitchen.

Neither Bob nor Almeady attended school, but along the way, they learned to read, write and “figure.”

In 1920, to benefit his grandchildren and other Black children in the area, Bob donated an acre to the county (which had created districts for white and “colored” schools) and built Walnut Grove in the Jones community. Typical of country schools, it had a pot-bellied stove and one teacher for all eight grades. Grandson Bobby — later a veterinarian and the Tarrant County epidemiologist — remembered the “bonus” education he received there: as he waited his turn to recite, he would listen to the older students.

In 1951, Walnut Grove closed because its students (fewer than 10) were heading to junior and senior high. Because of racial segregation, Black and mixed-race children had to go to Fort Worth or another city to continue their education. The Jones family chose I.M. Terrell in Fort Worth. The trip was an hour or more each way on Highway 121 (now Highway 26/Belknap Street) or on Highway 377. Granddaughter Betty sometimes rode the Trailways bus home via Roanoke, which dropped her off in the late afternoon at Noah’s Store (today, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House). Later, Northwest ISD bought a windowless panel truck with bench seats to drive Black students to I.M. Terrell.

Jones descendants attended Howard University, Tuskegee, Kansas State, Juilliard, Texas Southern, Notre Dame, the Sorbonne and other schools. Many became educators; others became business owners or musicians or worked in animal science professions. One grandson taught in Liberia.

In 2012, 61 years after Walnut Grove closed, Carroll ISD named its newest elementary Walnut Grove. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Jones great-great-granddaughter and longtime teacher Linda Grigsby Walczyk, in referencing segregation, said, “I am thrilled to be standing here in this gorgeous school, Walnut Grove, which represents a full circle moment in history, a moment which runs directly through me! It is a redemptive moment in public education.”

THE VALUE OF BUSINESS

Bob learned about livestock from his father. At age 18, with money earned on twice-yearly trail drives, Bob set out to find a place of his own. He began buying land in the Eastern Cross Timbers, 5 miles east of Roanoke (established in 1881). Water came from Denton Creek.

In 1974, the ranch received a Texas Family Land Heritage award. According to a newspaper article, “The land must have been in continuous agricultural production at the hands of one family for a century or more. Jones established the farm in 1868, after originally purchasing 49 acres of rich bottomland.”

As Bob’s ranching operation grew, tenant farmers and hired hands helped to grow grain and clear trees and brush. Bob loaned his tenant farmers money, working with them to help them succeed. Like other ranchers, Bob paid taxes, borrowed from banks and repaid loans, received leases for mineral rights and did business with bankers, merchants, cattlemen and lawyers.

Bob became one of the area’s largest landowners, eventually owning 1,000-2,000 acres “free and clear” on the Tarrant-Denton county line.

Bob’s legacy as a successful and reputable businessman helped the next generation, sons Jinks and Emory, build their own business after the Army Corps of Engineers acquired much of their land through eminent domain for Lake Grapevine. Bob couldn’t have known that by the early 1950s, much of his land would be under Lake Grapevine.

In 1948, at the southeast corner of Highway 114 and White’s Chapel Road, eight years before Southlake was founded, they built an auction barn and, in 1949, a cafe. Their wives, Lula and Elnora, who were sisters, operated the small Jones Bros. Cafe, which some historians believe was the first integrated cafe in Texas. When 114 was widened, the auction barn and cafe were rebuilt under one roof.

Farmers, horse enthusiasts, part-time farmers who were also airline pilots and others came from miles around for the cattle auctions Tuesday mornings at 10 and horse auctions Wednesday evenings at 7. And for the hamburgers, chili (no beans!) and mouth-watering peach and apricot fried pies.

Lula and Elnora didn’t open an integrated cafe, it just turned out that way.

“Black truck drivers [hauling rock to Lake Grapevine] would … come in the back door and ask if they could have

a soda or a sandwich,” Lula’s daughter Betty told a newspaper columnist. “My mother told them, ‘I’ll serve you if you come in the front door.’ They’d say they didn’t want to get her into any trouble. My mother would say, ‘This is a family business. I’ll serve who I want.’ The Black truckers would walk in, and they couldn’t believe it. They’d sit there [at the counter] and look all around. They didn’t know if they were going to be snatched out and lynched. It was like they were on another planet.”

By 1975, the Joneses had leased out the auction barn and cafe. Today, the site has disappeared under another expansion of 114. A popular flea market, started by Lula and Elnora as a place for people to sell “treasures,” lasted into the 2000s.

THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY

Bob and Almeady worked hard, but they had fun too. By 1900, they were hosting an “end of harvest” picnic for workers and their families featuring barbecue, music and dancing. It was the beginning of a tradition that contributed to the area’s racial harmony and community spirit.

“The Roanoke, Argyle, Grapevine, Southlake area was never really highly segregated,” said grandson Bobby. “There was not really the overt racism around here that there was in some other areas.”

Bob died on Christmas Day 1936. According to a local newspaper, a crowd of 500 jammed Roanoke’s First Baptist for the funeral. Blacks sat on one side of the church, whites on the other.

In 1948, the community picnic Bob had started was moved to a field next to his sons’ auction barn. There was no admission charge for the picnic, dancing (Blacks and whites danced separately) and baseball games, but people bought tickets for the barbecue, shaved ice, soft drinks (no liquor allowed) and ball-toss carnival games. Kids enjoyed a merry-go-round ride. The event grew to

three days with 1,000 people attending each day. The family remembers there was never any trouble. The picnics lasted into the 1960s.

Emory sponsored the Grapevine Auctioneers baseball team, which played in a field near the auction barn. Teams from Fort Worth, Dallas, Grand Prairie, Keller and Argyle played each other, and often the teams were integrated. On Sunday afternoons, a hundred or more people would be in the stands. The Auctioneers disbanded in 1968 when Emory passed away.

Marilyn Tucker didn’t know Bob and Almeady Jones, but she knew they loved and respected the land. In 1968, Marilyn and her husband, Gene, purchased 60 acres that Artie Jones Clay had inherited, and raised their two sons there. In 1999, Marilyn sold the land to the city with the provision that it would never be developed. “We wanted the land to be loved,” she said. In 2008, the Bob Jones Nature Center & Preserve was dedicated.

In 2021, a statue of Bob and Almeady commissioned by the Southlake Arts Council was placed next to the playground in Bob Jones Park. According to the city, “the statue is a memorial to the monumental role the Jones family played in Southlake’s development.”

This article is based on the Southlake Historical Society’s award-winning exhibit “Bob and Almeady Chisum Jones: A True Story of Resilience, Courage and Success,” which was displayed in summer 2020 at Southlake Town Hall. It was researched and written by Anita Robeson, SHS historian, and Connie Cooley, SHS president. The exhibit’s permanent home is the Bob Jones Nature Center’s visitors center. Time Flies Celebrate Your History Together With His And Hers Breitling Watches

In 1984, songs like Van Halen’s “Jump” and Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose” topped the charts along with movies like “Indiana Jones” and “The Karate Kid.” The Ewings, The Cosbys and Michael P. Keaton were considered appointment television, and Breitling celebrated its centennial anniversary.

After years of flexing its aeronautic expertise creating high-precision timepieces for such hotshots as the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic fleet, the Swiss manufacturer launched its Chronomat line in 1984 and thus delivered a new level of form and function to everyday citizens.

True to the original men’s Chronomat, the rider tabs at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock protect the sapphire crystal glass from shock. With a case measuring 44 mm for men and 32 mm for women, the Super Chronomat collection comes in three distinct versions. Two are encased in stainless steel with blue or black dial-and-bezel combinations. Former Sooners Coach Is Ready For His XFL Comeback

While Southlake Carroll’s season came to an end, that doesn’t mean Dragon Stadium is done with football. This month marks the start of a new season for the XFL, a professional football league with an ownership group that includes actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and film producer Dany Garcia. While visiting teams like the Vegas Vipers and the Seattle Sea Dragons will be busy practicing at Dragon Stadium, former Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops is just happy to be back coaching on the field with his Arlington Renegades.

I’VE BEEN PLAYING FOOTBALL… for my whole life, from grade school all the way to high school. In 1979, I was fortunate enough to get a scholarship to play for Iowa and compete in the Big Ten Conference. I played for Hayden Fry for four years, and in my last year, I was named Team MVP and started coaching as a graduate assistant. That kind of kick-started my career path in coaching.

AFTER MY TIME WITH THE HAWKEYES WAS DONE, I… spent seven years as a defensive coach for Kansas State, then coached for three years in Florida. Then in 1998, I became the head coach for Oklahoma and went 7-5 in our first season.

DURING MY 18 YEARS WITH THE SOONERS, WE… won all the major ball games, including the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl. We won 10 Big 12 Championships and were named National Champions in 2000. That was the same year where I was named the Walter Camp and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year. It’s been a long journey, but it’s also been incredibly fun and fulfilling.

WHAT I REALLY LIKE ABOUT FOOTBALL IS THAT… it’s the ultimate team sport. No one wins anything on their own, and I certainly never won any of those awards on my own. I’ve got players to thank that played well for me, as well as an exemplary coaching staff that supported me and my team. That’s how I’ve always looked at it. It’s more of a staff coach of the year award to me.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COACHING IS… always connecting and relating to the players. My team knows that I care about them, and they know I’m always going to be honest and forthright with them. My players appreciate that. If I’ve done anything right, it’s being a player’s coach while still pushing for the right things and being successful.

I CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT IN 2019 TO… coach the Arlington Renegades in the XFL, formerly known as the Dallas Renegades. I was drawn to the fact that I’d be working with older players. These guys are all right on the outskirts of being in the NFL — a bunch of very talented players that understand football and pick up the sport very quickly. I saw it as a great opportunity to work with them and help provide a unique football experience for these guys. We didn’t get to finish our season in 2020, so I’m really just looking forward to working with everybody in the league again.

MY FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE SPORT IS… the fellowship, the teamwork, the camaraderie you build with other players. That’s what makes it so much fun, and that was the part I missed the most. It makes it hard to stay away from it.

I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THERE IS… a market for football after the Super Bowl. It’s fun to watch, it’s fun to play and it’s fun to be part of something bigger than yourself. The Renegades and I hope to be a big part of that community this season, all the way up to Southlake.

Love Him Tender

Search the internet for the world's most famous butcher, and the name Nusret Gökçe won’t be found. The slight has to come from an algorithmic issue, because the Turkish butcher turned global restaurateur to stars like Leonardo DiCaprio has nearly 50 million Instagram followers. A recent 15-second video of the fit and flamboyant 39-year-old catches him flipping a beef loin in the air with a knife and slicing it like butter as it descends upon his blade has more than 257,000 likes.

But what really put Nusret on the map, and gave him the affectionate nickname “Salt Bae,” was a similarly short 2017 video of his now iconic move — a fluttering fingers-over-forearm salt

sprinkle — done over a freshly-cut ribeye that has been viewed 17 million times. The burst of fame accelerated his ascent up the culinary ranks, which at current count includes 22 Nusr-Et restaurants across the globe from Dubai to Dallas and most every celebrity hot spot in between.

Life wasn’t always this glamorous for Gökçe. Born in 1983 to a mineworker father, he had to abandon school in the sixth grade to help his father make ends meet. He was working as a butcher’s apprentice before kids his age were shaving. Dedicated to his new craft, Gökçe learned quickly and gained a reputation as a skilled butcher. The early start combined with long hours became the cornerstone of his success. By the age of 25, he be-

came a linchpin of the butchery company he worked for and was able to save money to put toward his ultimate goal of starting his own restaurant.

With some savings and more than a decade of experience, Gökçe traveled to Argentina and the United States in 2007, often offering his services for free so he could continue to advance his skills. He returned to Turkey in 2010 and humbly opened his first restaurant of just eight tables. With an investment from a wealthy customer who found his food extraordinary, Gökçe opened new restaurants in Dubai and Istanbul.

Just seven years removed from working in restaurants for no money at all, Gökçe’s Nusr-Et brand was awarded The Five Star Diamond Award in 2014 from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. This was the first time a restaurant in Turkey was recognized internationally for such a high level of quality.

The rags-to-riches story is as impressive as the prices on this well-heeled menu. Get ready to put your money where your mouth is because the signature Saltbae Tomahawk starts at $265 and soars as high as $1,700 for the Golden version coated in edible 24-karat gold.

At Nusr-Et, you come for the chance at a brush with greatness, but you stay for the impeccably prepared and presented meats — of which there are many. For starters, try the razor-thin beef carpaccio, prepared with Parmigiano-Reggiano and a 12-year aged balsamic vinegar. If you’re looking for something you’ll never see anywhere else, try the meat sushi. The inventive appetizer is made of thin-sliced New York Strip steak, topped with sushi rice, crispy potato straws, fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano, avocado cream, soy sauce and ginger.

The meat sushi is an appropriate lead-in to the painstakingly ribbon-styled cuts of Wagyu striploin entree also known as meat spaghetti. Saslik is another flavorfilled find where tenderloin pieces are marinated in buttermilk and spices and served with grilled shallots.

Meat enthusiasts will be enticed by a full rack of lamb, an 8-hour roasted Asado short rib, and the Amor, Salt Bae’s private reserve cut of house-marinated Wagyu rib cap. Large enough for four to share and with a price of $2,500, you may want to go Dutch too.

Sides are served family style and include all of your traditional favorites from sauteed mushrooms and mashed potatoes to asparagus and Brussels sprouts. At $18 per side, this could be a great date night for you and your favorite vegetarian.

If you’ve saved room and some money for dessert, you can end the night with a slice of Nusr-Et’s 24-karat gold-wrapped Baklava promptly flown in from Turkey. Paired with a golden cappuccino will only set you back another $120.

Love this memeable meat master or not, if you’re able to tender your wallet on such a night, it will be something worth talking about.

Grapevine’s Hotel

Vin

Adds Pop To Your Nightlife

Originally opening in late 2020, Grapevine’s Hotel Vin continues to impress with elaborate culinary adventures perfect for a night out with your beloved. Already well known as the home of Bacchus Kitchen + Bar, Harvest Hall and The Magnum Speakeasy, Hotel Vin continues to offer eye-popping experiences.

As the temperatures dropped, nights were heating up inside every one of the eight outdoor bubbles of Hotel Vin’s Winter Wonderland Experience. Expertly arranged alongside the hotel’s WineYard lawn, this year’s bubbles have been updated and upgraded for the season with an après ski-lodge theme you and your party will love. Perfect for a cozy date night or parties for up to eight people, each includes cozy fur blankets and heaters to fend off the winter chill.

Coinciding with the ski theme, the musical stage is also set amidst an evergreen forest complete with fire pits for all to enjoy as you rock the night away to live music or DJ-inspired tunes that last as late as 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Valentine’s Day.

Reservations are required and kick off as early as 4 p.m. for those looking to enjoy a Happy Hour Bubble. A specially-prepared cocktail menu includes seasonally-inspired drinks like the Winter Berry Gin and Tonic made with Botanist Gin, Domaine de canton, berries and garnished with smoked rosemary for a refreshing floral sip. The Campfire Smoked Old Fashioned is the perfect blend of sweet and smokey made with High West Campfire Whiskey, Angostura and orange bitters.

If an hour just isn’t enough, two-hour and full dining sessions are available for 5:30 and 8 p.m. seatings. These bubbles are best enjoyed while sharing a housemade three-cheese fondue accompanied by a medley of bread, pickles, bacon lardons and assorted vegetables for dipping. Those with heartier appetites can enjoy a three-course dinner that features one of three gourmet entrees and is paired with your choice of wine from a full range of varietals from Daou Vineyards. There’s a braised short rib with wild mushrooms, a grilled salmon with colcannon mashed potatoes and a roasted chicken with an herb quinoa pilaf.

In true ski lodge fashion, it’s a must to finish the night off with something sweet. When the time is right, try Hotel Vin’s Smores Martini made with vanilla vodka, chocolate liqueur, Bailey’s and finished with toasted marshmallow and a graham cracker rim.

Pour Decisions

Lux-Lounge Vibe Meets

Suburbia At Social Oak

Decorative globe chandeliers, wisps of gold-chained curtains and plush velvet panels surround a custom VIP banquette with the phrase “make pour decisions” in neon overhead. Yes, this lounge looks and feels like a place from your urban nightlife dreams. However, you don’t have to drive to Dallas or Fort Worth, because this luxurious lounge vibe is now ready and waiting in Trophy Club.

Great times at Social Oak are all centered around state-of-the-art wine and whiskey self-serve machines that dispense 56 wines and 28 whiskeys by the pour. If you’re curious to see if you like a Barolo from Italy before committing to a full glass, then try a 1-ounce pour. The same goes for hard-to-find whiskeys from around the world. New to Japanese whisky? Sip an ounce of an 18-year-old Yamazaki and find out for yourself.

“During my travels, I had stumbled upon some amazing wine bars, and there was one in particular that had the wine pouring machines,” Social Oak owner Vinh Le says of the inspiration behind the concept. “I fell in love with the social aspect of walking up to the machines and talking to people about the wines. I also loved being able to try a small pour before committing to a full glass or bottle. I chose to open the first location in Trophy Club because we have so many sophisticated wine and whiskey drinkers in the area, and it’s hard to find an upscale lounge without having to drive to Dallas or Fort Worth.”

Knowledgeable bartenders are also ready to pour you something even more special from Social Oak’s full list of more than 250 wines and nearly 100 expressions of scotch, bourbon, rye and other spirits. Because any good drink deserves a flavorful bite, head chef Nga Vu has created a menu of shareable plates. Nga has over 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry and pulls inspiration from her travels to create such standout items as Wild Burgundy Escargot, Japanese Pork Belly Buns and Truffle Deviled Eggs amongst other delectable dishes.

For a modest rideshare fee less than the cost of a drink in the city, you can sip from premier wines and whiskeys selected by a team of sommeliers and still get home at a reasonable hour.

The Boss Is Back In Town Bruce Springsteen Reunites With The E Street Band

As his primary backing band since 1972, few musical groups have performed alongside Bruce Springsteen as much as the E Street Band. Now touring for the first time together since 2017, the Boss and the band are back together for a whole new tour that kicks off this month.

Made up of members including Steven Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Patti Scialfa, Roy Bittan, Gary Tallent, Nils Lofgren and many more, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have produced some of the biggest hits of their careers together, whether you’re talking about “Glory Days,” “Dancing In The Dark” or “Born In The U.S.A.” With over 140 million records sold worldwide, 20 Grammy

Award wins, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Streets Of Philadelphia,” die-hard fans have over six decades of music to love from the rock icons, including their most recent album collaboration “Letter To You.”

But whether you’re a fan of their old or new hits, you’ll find both when Bruce and the band hit the road this month. From Bruce’s captivating and profound lyrics to the E Street Band’s unique and powerful sound, these Rock And Roll Hall of Famers bring down any stadium they’re in. The best part? After the show, there will be a high-quality live recording available for purchase so you can relive the experience all over again. Photo by Roy J. Baron

Park It! Ski The Very Best At Deer Valley Resort In Park City

When it comes to top-notch skiing in North America, it doesn’t get much better than Park City, Utah. That’s why the majority of the skiing and snowboarding events of the 2002 Winter Olympics were held there. Serious skiers and travel enthusiasts know that with 300 inches of powder each year, Deer Valley, Utah is the place to be. If you’re really serious about skiing — like double-black-diamond, edge-carving, no-boards-allowed kind of skiing — then Deer Valley Resort is your holy grail.

First In Class

Over four decades ago, Deer Valley Resort planted its flag and set the bar high for the ski industry by providing a level of service once only expected from five-star hotels. Achieving that early vision to pair world-class skiing with luxury accommodations, gourmet food and impeccable service has made Deer Valley a staple atop most every list of the country’s best ski resorts.

The resort boasts three distinct lodging areas. Snow Park, near the base of the mountain, provides hotel rooms and private home options closer to the nightlife of the Historic Main

Street. The uppermost lodging at Empire Pass provides stellar views, while Silver Lake has residences located in the middle of it all.

All of this is situated around more than 2,000 acres of alpine skiing that makes Deer Valley Resort the Best Ski Resort in North America, according to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Ski Exclusively

The winter season kicks off in early December and lasts through mid-April, leaving plenty of time to hit the slopes. Deer Valley understands excessive crowds dampen the overall experience, so they unapologetically limit the slopes to skiers only.

When you see the slopes, you’ll be glad they go through such troubles. There are 103 ski runs and six bowls for skiers of all levels to explore. After a few warmup runs, advanced skiers will choose to hit the black-diamond and double-black-diamond trails like The Fortune Teller or The Mayflower Chutes from atop Bald Mountain, which peaks at elevations up to 9,400 feet. With 21 chair lifts, there will be plenty of access to whatever trail suits your fancy.

This is a haven for expert skiers. However, we all start somewhere, and it's good to know Deer Valley’s ski school is second to none. With their Bambi Club, lessons start as young as 4 years old and continue on in several age-appropriate children’s groups. Of course, adult sessions and private one-on-one sessions are available to meet the needs of almost any novice skier or someone who just needs a refresher course.

Tandoori Traditions

With everything from small cafes offering takeout to reservation-only affairs, the dining options at Deer Valley are as varied as the immaculate slopes. This season marks the unveiling of Cast & Cut, the valley’s most anticipated new steakhouse. Located at Snow Park Lodge, Cast & Cut offers the quintessential steakhouse experience complete with dry-aged steaks, lobster, caviar and wild-caught trout accompanied by the best locally sourced ingredients, all freshly prepared by their team of award-winning chefs.

Enjoy a taste of the Alps when you visit Fireside Dining. The alpine-inspired menu starts off with a first course of warm and melty raclette or “roasted” Swiss cheese, which harkens back to the Middle Ages as it is served from stone fireplaces. Steamed potatoes and pickled onions pair up with housemade mustards, fruit chutneys, Italian salami and fresh baguettes that elevate your thinking of what charcuterie can be. Main courses include mountain weather-inspired comforts like grilled lamb T-bone steaks and veal and wild mushroom stew. Parents and pickier eaters need not worry as there are several casual eateries offering a wide variety of staples and kid-friendly options to choose from. DeerValley.com
