the next level “You have to work harder than anyone else. You never know where that hard work can take you.” It’s an inspirational message that could be plastered on posters in locker rooms and classrooms anywhere. Jermaine O’Neal, the man who expressed this sentiment in an interview with Southlake Style, is still “posterizing”—only with a new passion. The former NBA star and Southlake resident is merging his talent as a professional athlete with his entrepreneurial prowess to help young athletes elevate their game. He’s at the helm of Drive Nation, a $10.4 million youth sports facility that just broke ground at DFW Airport. While it will no doubt be a game-changer for the youth sports market, the 90,000-squarefoot, all-sports campus isn’t just about developing athletes physically. “It’s about creating great young men and women who will go on to inspire others,” O’Neal says. Flip to page 12 for our story on O’Neal and the much-anticipated Drive Nation. This issue is packed with others who are taking their passions up a notch. Kyle Cantrell and Brendan James, both members of the Carroll High School jazz program, have honed their musical skills all the way to the top in Texas. They auditioned as our state’s top two tenor saxophonists, the highest recognition Texas music students can receive. They admit there’s a motivating factor in their rivalry—and also in their friendship. Read about these “Dueling Saxophones” on page 56. And, because this is the month of love, we visited with a licensed Southlake marriage and family counselor for a few pointers on how to strengthen your relationship with your significant other. My favorite takeaway? Turn off the technology. It’s a good reminder to enjoy the moment with your loved ones. See more top tips from Maryellen Dabal in this month’s installment of our new department, “Five Minutes With…” on page 84. Whether it’s nurturing relationships, perfecting jazz standards or embarking on a new business endeavor, our February issue highlights people who know exactly how to go from one level to the next. Perhaps their passion will motivate you to rise to the next level, too.

local picks THE BIBLE I read the Bible every day—sometimes in the morning, sometimes before bed depending on my day. My favorite verse is Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Jermaine O’Neal, former NBA star and CEO/ Founder of Drive Nation, from this month’s feature story

THE DA VINCI CODE | DAN BROWN I like the thought process involved in “The Da Vinci Code.” It’s not just handing you a story; it makes you think about putting the pieces together for yourself. THIS LIFE I LIVE RORY FEEK FEBRUARY 14

Broken Hearts and Lifted Spirits Not all love stories have happy endings, but singer/songwriter Rory Feek and his wife, Joey, chose to share theirs with the world, despite Joey losing her battle against cancer in March 2016. In his book, “This Life I Live: One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever,” Rory opens up about his childhood struggles, his music and film career and other parts of his life he calls ordinary. But most importantly, he shares details about how he and Joey met, fell in love and then he had to let her go. The Feeks’ spirituality gave them hope and peace, and Rory’s life became extraordinary when he met Joey, the “greatest person” he has ever known.

24: LEGACY THE GREAT WALL IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 17

A Story of Untold Greatness Along with Stonehenge and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Wall of China keeps the world wondering of its existence. Engineers and architects designed and built the series of fortifications between 700 and 400 B.C., across what was then the northern border of China. The wall was meant to keep intruders out, especially during times of war, but director Yimou Zhang and screenwriter Marshall Herskovitz (“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”) ask audiences to reconsider who— or what—these intruders might actually be. After mercenary Matt Damon (the Jason Bourne films) is held prisoner within the Great Wall, he discovers the mystery behind the structure and joins elite warriors to try to keep out a seemingly unstoppable force.

FOX FEBRUARY 5

Another Day, Another Hour Twenty-four hours may not seem like much time, but if viewers learned anything from the Emmy Award-winning Fox television series “24,” an action-packed, espionage drama needs time to unfold. The clock starts ticking in “24: Legacy” as Sergeant Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins, “Straight Outta Compton”) learns that despite being placed in a witness protection program, he has been exposed. Six months prior, an elite squad of the U.S. Army, led by Carter, killed terrorist leader Sheik Ibrahim Bin-Khalid. Enlisting the help of intelligence officer Rebecca Ingram (Miranda Otto, “Homeland”), Carter and his team do what they can to survive the next 24 hours.

Driving Kids to Excel FORMER NBA STAR AND SOUTHLAKE RESIDENT JERMAINE O’NEAL IS CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF YOUTH SPORTS IN DALLAS-FORT WORTH 12 • FEB 17

W

hen his career in professional basketball was winding down, Jermaine O’Neal and his wife, Mesha, came up with a list of places they might like to live. The Dallas-Fort Worth area became a strong contender for one primary reason: O’Neal loves the Cowboys. After visiting the area, the couple found Southlake to be the perfect fit. “Our real estate agent drove us around the Metroplex. When we got to Southlake, the education system jumped out at us,” says O’Neal. “Our daughter had always gone to private school; the schools here are at a private-school level.” Now, after a successful career in the NBA, including eight seasons with the Indiana Pacers—six of which he was voted an NBA All-Star—the 6’11” former forward-center has focused his unparalleled energy on giving back to the community in the form of helping develop and train young athletes. O’Neal is the principal behind Drive Nation, a youth sports organization that will soon move from his home headquarters to a brand-new facility near the south terminal entrance of DFW Airport. Currently, Drive Nation includes boys’ basketball teams from grades five through eight. The teams practice at O’Neal’s private gym in his Southlake home. But if all goes according to schedule, Drive Nation will be housed in its 90,000-squarefoot training and gym facility by August.

A NEW KIND OF SPORTS COMPLEX The all-sports destination facility will play host to tournaments, local leagues and club teams and offer individualized training in volleyball, basketball, beach volleyball, soccer, lacrosse and football for boys and girls from third through 12th grade. O’Neal isn’t just relying on his business prowess and years in the NBA to guide his decision-making; being a dad also drives many of his business decisions. The O’Neals’ daughter, Asjia, now a junior at Carroll Senior High School and the cover star of our 2016 edition of Dragon Pride Winter, is a standout volleyball player who has already committed to play for the University of Texas. They also have a 10-year-old son, Jermaine Jr., who plays for his dad on one of the Drive Nation teams. Of course, one of the most unique perspectives O’Neal brings is that of a former professional athlete, someone who spent nearly two decades playing in the NBA. “As an athlete, I think, ‘What did I need at this age? What can I bring from a professional level to this level?’” O’Neal says. The answer to that question is, it turns out, a lot more than just domination on the court or field. “It’s about creating great young men and women who will go on to inspire others. We want them to walk out of the facility better people,” he says. He wants to “teach them to be dominant on and off the court.” Because in the long run, with fewer than one percent of kids going on to play professional sports, youth sports is about teaching kids important lessons about life—about winning, losing and recovering from mistakes. “Our job is to take the kids out of their comfort zones, both mentally and physically,” O’Neal says. “How hard you drive determines how successful you will be.” Also important is teaching the kids not to fear failure. “You’re going to fail at things, but the question to me is how are you going to react when it happens? Are you going to quit, Southlake STYLE Magazine

NBA Career stats Jermaine o'neal

or do you redirect your efforts to get around that obstacle?” O’Neal asks. While he may have made a few mistakes in life— who hasn’t after all?—O’Neal never gave up on his dreams, and that’s invaluable wisdom he can offer area kids. He stresses the importance of repetition, of working over and over to improve in whatever field they pursue. O’Neal cites friend and former NBA teammate Draymond Green as an example of perseverance. “He has worked super hard; he has a dedication to out-working everyone,” O’Neal says. “You have to work harder than anyone else,” he says. “You never know where that hard work can take you.”

If O’Neal expects a lot from the kids, he also expects much from the parents. In fact, he can’t stress enough the parents’ role in a child’s athletic development and says parents must have the right temperament to allow their kids to grow at their own levels. At the same time, as a parent, O’Neal can also relate to how parents expect their children to be treated. “The kids are going to be treated the way I’d want my kids to be treated,” he says. “We won’t tolerate any craziness with parents, kids or coaches.” Brad Berry, whose son Owen plays on Drive Nation’s sixth-grade team, drives from Dallas to Southlake so he can be a part of O’Neal’s organization. It’s a long drive, but still, Berry, a father of three boys, says, “It’s the single best basketball decision I’ve ever made for my kids.” FEB 17 • 15

DRIVE NATION ARCHITECTURAL RENDERING

16 • FEB 17

From a fundamental standpoint, he says, O’Neal is excellent. But more than that, Berry says the coach always relates lessons in sports back to life. “He expects a lot from the kids, but he’s also very loving,” says Berry. “He brings a level of intensity, but one that’s appropriate for the boys’ ages.” And the boys don’t want to let him down. Tray Naskins, whose son Aidan also plays for Drive Nation, agrees. “I think he’s passionate,” Naskins says of O’Neal. Plus, he adds, “there’s a purpose to what he’s doing. I see my son getting better.” O’Neal is admittedly intense, but there is no doubt he cares about the kids who are giving their all for him. O’Neal calls the players “my boys” and spends time with them on and off the court, often scheduling business trips around the league so as not to miss tournaments or practices. He’s even been there to counsel the boys as well, recently offering support to a few of the players whose parents were going through a separation, a subject that struck a chord with O’Neal. O’Neal and his brother were raised by a single mom, who he praises as being amazing. But he says he is still affected by growing up without a father. He told the kids whose parents were splitting up to feel blessed to still have two fully invested parents and to respect every moment they have with each of their parents, together or not. O’Neal didn’t meet his father until he was 30 years old. The reunion, however, was short-lived, as his father died a year later. Though he didn’t have a relationship with his dad, O’Neal was blessed to have mentors throughout his adult life, including Hollywood producer Peter Guber. His mentors enabled him to gain insight and experience in the business world. O’Neal has had the opportunity to audit business courses at Stanford University and to work with Silicon Valley venture capital investors, sitting in on pitches from earlystage startups. This knowledge helped him navigate the world of business as he invested in real estate and other ventures and still today as he looks for partners for Drive Nation. Southlake STYLE Magazine

THE BUSINESS OF YOUTH SPORTS Although O’Neal is sole owner of Drive Nation, he has brought on investors and sponsors that make sense for the project. The company has strategic partnerships with Nike and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Another partner is Athos, a company that’s developing wearable technology for athletes that tracks and analyzes, in real time, athletes’ muscle effort so they can improve and grow. But O’Neal is more than familiar with each of these organizations: He worked with Nike for many years as a professional athlete (and even had his own signature shoe with the company), played for AAU teams when he was younger and has ownership in Athos. Because of his relationship with Athos, O’Neal offered to make Drive Nation a testing facility of sorts for the company. “We’re going to sensorize the ceilings and the floors to track stats,” he says. O’Neal is clearly sparing no expense when it comes to Drive Nation, and for this $10-plus million endeavor, he’s proceeding without an NBA salary to cushion any financial blows. “This deal has beat me up in so many ways,” he says. “But I truly believe this is what God wants me to do. He would have never allowed the doors to open if it wasn’t his plan for me.” As the facility nears completion, O’Neal and his team will roll out a marketing campaign to generate excitement for Drive Nation. As with everything he does, O’Neal wants nothing short of greatness for the facility. “We want to be, without a doubt, the most dominant force [in youth sports] Texas has ever seen,” he says. And it’s not hard to envision O’Neal making Drive Nation just that. FEB 17 • 17

DALLAS LEASE RETURNS Kris Gaerlan says, “There has to be a better way.”

D

allas Lease Returns and Southlake resident Kris Gaerlan have come a long way since selling lease return vehicles from an old wash bay behind D&M Leasing in Dallas, yet the same passion for automobiles and belief that the traditional dealership experience can be done better is still the driving force. Gaerlan says, “It’s simple. I believe customers want an experience I would want: transparent with no pressure or games, and fair for both parties.” If you sell vehicles, it’s critical for your business model to start with a good inventory. “Dallas Lease Returns is unique because most of our cars are one-owner off-lease vehicles that we get direct from the lease company,” says Gaerlan. “There is an old saying in the car business, ‘Not all auction cars are bad, but all bad cars go to the auction.’ Since these vehicles bypass the auto auction, you don’t have to worry about buying a car that was another dealer’s bad car.” One of the reasons Dallas Lease Returns is so different from a traditional car dealership is because of what Gaerlan learned at auto

dealer finance school. “They teach you how to sell finance and products in what they call ‘the box’ at many dealerships. The training was a higher pressure you-against-the-customer training where to graduate, they record you doing a mock sale so they can make sure you know the sales process, which included creating doubt and boxing the customer’s objections. It was high pressure to me as the finance manager in the scenario, and I thought how bad it must be for the customer.” This experience lead Gaerlan to take a hard look at the traditional dealership model. “At most traditional dealerships, you work with a sales agent and then a finance manager and then a warranty/products sales person,” he explains. “They’re good people just doing their jobs but the system often creates a high pressure sale situation for the customer. Each person the customer meets is paid by doing their specific job—selling. This means they have to do everything in their power to sell you their product or service or they may not make money. High pressure is almost common sense with a traditional dealership sales model if you think about it and why customers at Dallas Lease Returns work with only one agent throughout the entire process.” Gaerlan decided to make another change in the car buying experience when he noticed people looking at cars when dealerships were closed. “Can you believe some auto dealerships have made the experience so bad that people would rather show up to see cars when they are closed? That’s crazy,” he says. “At DLR when clients come in, we ask if they even want to speak with an agent. If not, we simply show them to our indoor showroom and

let them know our vehicles are unlocked. We believe people don’t always know exactly what they want and simply may want to look at vehicles without being hassled. That’s the type of environment I would want if I was shopping for a car.” More than 600 off-lease vehicles are taken to Dallas Lease Returns to be sold each month. You can find cars of all makes and models, in fantastic condition, with most of them being between two and four years old. Even though Gaerlan is a natural salesman, selling cars is not his favorite aspect of his job though—his employees are. “What’s cool about growing a business is that I still have some of the same employees that started the company with me,” says Gaerlan. “It’s pretty neat to see a guy that started with me as a photo taker, who now has three kids, owns his own home and takes care of his family.” When he is not busy at the office, Gaerlan enjoys spending time with his wife Victoria and their children, Asher and Beckett. Some of their favorite family-friendly activities include tailgating at Dragon games, enjoying Southlake Town Square and going to birthday parties and games every weekend. “We moved to Southlake so our kids could go to the best schools in Texas,” Gaerlan says, “but my favorite things to do are out in the community. Everything in Southlake is geared around family, kids and community, and we love it!” Gaerlan is just as passionate about his customers as he is about his family and community. With an A+ BBB rating

Southlake STYLE Magazine

and many five-star testimonials on Dealer Rater, Yelp, Facebook and others, Dallas Lease Returns proves they care about customers. “You can’t sell cars without cars, but the actual heart of Dallas Lease Returns is the customer service,” says Gaerlan. “We treat people fairly. People come in looking for cars, but they come back because they had a great experience.” If you want to buy a car you can trust, in a no-pressure environment, from a man who truly cares about each customer, then Dallas Lease Returns is the place to go.

Dueling Saxophones

BY AUDREY SELLERS

Brendan James & Kyle Cantrell

S

ome of the coolest kids in band play saxophone. Well, if you ask two of the top tenor saxophonists in the Carroll jazz program. The cool-guy vibe is why junior Kyle Cantrell and sophomore Brendan James were drawn to the instrument in the first place. Both students picked up a sax when they were in sixth grade, a time when most young people can use all the cool vibes they can get.

Out of hundreds of high school tenor saxophonists, 52 qualified to audition for the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State music group last fall. From this audition, Cantrell and James were selected as No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in a blind audition, landing these Dragons the highest recognition Texas music students can receive. There must be something in the water—or at least the water fountains outside the Carroll band hall. Dragons have claimed the top two spots for tenor saxophone for two consecutive years. Cantrell, who also auditioned as one of the state’s top two tenor saxophonists in 2015, is happy to be back in the spotlight. He says, “It’s a great honor and a really great feeling.” 56 • FEB 17

Photography by BluDoor Studios

For James, landing the No. 2 audition spot was an honor achieved much sooner than he ever imagined. “Finding out was pretty surreal,” he says. “I had my sights set for State as a longterm goal. I never expected success would come so early.” Throw in some friendly competition along with the Dragon spirit of excellence, and there’s no stopping Cantrell and James. But rather than become embattled, the students encourage each other to improve their musical game. The only question is, which of these up-and-coming saxophonists will be next to rise to the top? CARROLL JAZZ STUDENTS AND FRIENDLY RIVALS

KYLE CANTRELL AND BRENDAN JAMES TAKE THEIR MUSICAL TALENTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

FINE-TUNING MUSICAL TALENT Cantrell and James are part of a jazz program chockfull of skilled musicians, many of whom have also received impressive honors and accolades. Chalk it up to the students’ raw talent and steadfast determination—and also the fact that Carroll boasts one of the state’s best jazz programs. While most high schools in Texas offer jazz as an extracurricular activity after school, Carroll offers jazz during the school day through multiple classes. Southlake STYLE Magazine

“We are so much more supported by our administration in that we have three jazz band classes, which is absolutely unheard of,” says David Lown, director of jazz bands at Carroll. “Most high schools in Texas are lucky if they have a single class.” Not only does Carroll give students opportunities to perfect their skills during the school day, but the jazz program is audition-only; it’s open to only the best budding musicians. The audition-only aspect gives the program an elite feel, which is right in line with why Cantrell and James chose to play their instruments. When only a select few jazz students make the cut, it undoubtedly gives them more notoriety. Lown conducts auditions every May, and about 20 students are selected to each class based on skill level. In each class, students work on improvisation, which is composing music spontaneously. “Improvisation is challenging,” says Lown, “and we work on it incredibly hard.” FEB 17 • 57

But no matter how many notes they play and standards they learn, jazz students gain much more than musical knowledge. “Mr. Lown applies lessons that transcend beyond the band,” says Cantrell. “He shows us how we should act as people. He’s a great influence to all of us.” James says Lown is a personal mentor and counts him among the people who have impacted his life the most. “All the hours Mr. Lown inspires me to dedicate to this craft has shaped my character for the better. The pursuance of jazz has inspired curiosity, humility and a very hard work ethic, all which will benefit me in the long run,” he says. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to go [to Carroll]. It doesn’t get any more fortunate than this.”

MY FAVORITES ARE “There Will Never Be Another You,” “Footprints” and “All the Things You Are.” Kyle Cantrell

WHAT I LOVE TO PLAY “Confirmation” is one of my favorite jazz standards. Brendan James

THE ROAD TO STATE … AND BEYOND Whether they’re working on their improvisation skills or etudes (short musical compositions to improve technique) or learning jazz vocab from a recording, Lown says Cantrell and James have “an intrinsic motivation to keep working harder.” After school, both students carve out time to play the sax while still balancing schoolwork and other responsibilities. “I try to get my horn on my face for at least 30 minutes to two hours every day,” says Cantrell. James will play the sax for as long as possible before going to bed at a reasonable hour, which for him is midnight. “It can be later sometimes,” he admits, “but I have control that it doesn’t get much later than that.” This month, these All-State students will head to San Antonio for the annual TMEA Clinic and Convention, one of the largest music conventions in the country. They’ll have the opportunity to work with Denis DiBlasio, an international clinician and performer, before taking to the stage to perform before thousands of attendees. Lown has no doubt they’ll be great. “For All-State jazz, they just need to make sure they’re prepared. They will be,” he says. “They’re competitive, but in a positive way. They want to outdo each other, but they push each other to be better. They’ve actually become really good friends.” “There’s totally a vibe that everything I play he’s trying to be better than me and vice versa,” Cantrell says. “I’m not trying to beat him. I’m trying to push myself. Brendan is one of my closest friends.” James agrees there’s definitely a motivating factor in the rivalry— and the friendship. “Getting to share my passion for music with someone of better caliber is definitely great luck for me. It helps me with my playing. I’m going to catch him, though,” he adds. Last year, Lown watched the same friendly competition unfold between Cantrell and Will Nathman, one of Southlake Style’s “Five Ones to Watch” in 2016. Nathman currently studies in the prestigious jazz program at the University of North Texas. He’s one of many Carroll jazz students who have gone on to study jazz at top schools such as Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California. There’s no doubt the Carroll jazz program is top tier—especially the elite jazz group, the Carroll Jazz Orchestra, of which Cantrell and James are members. This all-star group performed as a finalist in 2007, 2010 and 2014 at the prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival in New York, which Lown calls “the Super Bowl of jazz competitions.” Lown has his sights on returning to the Big Apple in May. “We really want to go back. It’s our big goal,” he says. Aside from striving to make it to New York, jazz students have a busy spring ahead. They’ll play at the 43rd annual UT Arlington Jazz Festival later this month, and in March they’ll play at the eighth-annual APEX Jazz Festival presented by the APEX Arts League. No matter the competition or event, though, for jazz students to take their musical game to the top, Lown says it requires “an absolute determination and a diligence to succeed.” Sounds like James and Cantrell have exactly what it takes.

ou’ve set the scene for a relaxing evening at home with your significant other—the kids are in bed, a bottle of vino is chilled and your favorite movie is cued up on Netflix. You could dim the lights, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the Napoleon 60-Inch Allure Electric Fireplace. When you want to create a cozy ambiance to make your sweetie swoon, this wall-mount fireplace does it with the push of a button. The Napoleon Allure allows you to play with fire in multiple ways. You can control flame intensity, temperature and even flame color through a multi-function remote. No need to abandon your cozy cocoon on the couch to change the flickering firelight from orange to blue or a combination of the two. But should you choose to shimmy over to the Napoleon Allure (or

you misplaced the remote somewhere in the sofa cushions), a touch-screen control panel makes it easy to get the fire exactly how you want it. On a chilly night, it’s the perfect way to heat up the room without drastically increasing your electric bill. While the warmth of the flame sounds appealing now, you might question the necessity of such a fireplace in Texas. Put your hesitation to bed: You can enjoy this fireplace year-round thanks to optional heating functionality. If all you really want is to set the mood with a comforting glow, simply use your fireplace without the heat. And if you’re wondering where you’d enjoy the Napoleon Allure, there’s no need to knock down a wall or embark on a major remodeling project; this fireplace goes anywhere you choose. Use the included bracket to hang it on a living room or bedroom wall, or install it as a fully recessed unit in your wall. All you need to set this fireplace aglow is a standard outlet. A paintable cord cover ensures it will blend seamlessly in any room. However you opt to hang or display the unit, it’s a stunning alternative to a vented fireplace. You get all the charm and ambiance of a traditional fireplace without the need for firewood or a chimney. If you want to add sophistication and warmth to your home, just reconnect with an old flame in a new way: the Napoleon Allure.

Paint by the Numbers

V

an Gogh and da Vinci certainly understood the value of a well-placed paint color. And decorators and designers have transformed rooms—and the lives of those who live in them—with a fresh coat of paint. But before you hand over that tiny paint chip and mix a gallon or more, do a little planning to ensure you get the color you’re dreaming of. WE WENT TO LOCAL EXPERTS FOR ADVICE ON HOW TO CHOOSE A PAINT COLOR WHEN LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF HUES LOOM BEFORE US.

For 2017, the overarching trend is lighter and brighter as people ditch the Old World look dominated by gold, red and tan in favor of gray, greige (warm gray) and complementary colors inspired by nature, such as blue, green and yellow. The most popular Benjamin Moore paint color sold locally is Revere Pewter [HC-172]. Expect the color to reveal a very versatile, light gray with some warm undertones that really brings different fabrics and surfaces together nicely. Also popular grays by Benjamin Moore: Stonington Gray HC-170 Annapolis Gray HC-176 Silent Night 1613 Winter Solstice 1605 Senora Gray 1530

For paint finishes, the safe play for walls is eggshell—it’s durable, plays well with children and doesn’t scuff up easily. Most designers prefer matte because it offers little to no reflection, so the color is more true, but it really depends on who is living in the house. On cabinets, doors and trim, pros prefer Benjamin Moore’s Satin Impervo, an oil-based enamel. But if someone in the home is sensitive to smells, chemicals or allergens, an equally good alternative is a product called Advance— a water-borne interior alkyd (hybrid) that provides a smooth durable finish of an oil base paint that cleans up with soap and water. For those who demand zero VOCs in their paint, Natura by Benjamin Moore fits the bill. It emits no odors and is great for rooms such as nurseries and children’s play rooms. Mary Joseph, of Interior Solutions by Mary, suggests exploring exterior paint colors even indoors. “These colors are meant to blend in well with nature—water, sand, plants, trees—so you can certainly use them inside your home,” she says. Joseph’s pick for good neutral hues by Sherwin Williams include: Repose Gray 7015 Gateway Gray 7644 Techno Gray 6170 Since grays can be tricky and cast off shades of green, blue or even yellow, Joseph suggests buying a sample size of a few paint colors and then painting two coats onto a half-sized poster board. Then you can tack up the posters on your walls and test the colors in varying degrees of sunlight. Purchase a quart or sample size at any paint store and see how a new paint color can transform your home.

Love Chicken? Just Whistle! FROM-SCRATCH SOULFUL COOKING AWAITS AT WHISTLE BRITCHES

A Whistle Britches 6110 Frankford Road Dallas 972.590.8991 WhistleBritchesChicken.com

70 • FEB 17

t Whistle Britches, it’s all about the chicken. When this Dallas happening hot spot debuted on the tony restaurant scene last spring, the owners had one thing in mind: serve the tastiest, juiciest and crunchiest bird in town. Their secret? Pickle-brined birds, farm-fresh ingredients and soulful cooking that leaves you wanting more. The farm-funky décor lends a fresh vibe and, when weather permits, outdoor seating is a fun option. With the belief that comfort food never goes out of style, the scratch kitchen is always baking fresh buttermilk biscuits and some of the best chicken sandwiches in town. Couple all that with a great local craft

beer selection and inventive cocktails, and you soon realize why the name Whistle Britches is so fitting. The restaurant likes to draw a lot of attention to itself and has no shame in doing so. Stop in for a taste and you’ll see why! Consider the menu for a moment. Brunch is served on Saturday morning and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features chicken, naturally, but consider the fact that you can order chicken tenders, chicken by the piece or an entire roasted bird. Be sure to try tender buttermilk melt-in-your-mouth biscuits and farmfresh eggs served the way you like them best. We recommend the Chicken Benny, Whistle Britches’ take on an eggs benedict that features an open-faced biscuit, crispy chicken, pimento cheese and soft poached eggs topped with

grain mustard hollandaise. We think any southern grandma would give this dish her stamp of approval. Come back for lunch and try sandwiches, salads and sides. Order The City Boy salad with soft lettuces, bosc pears, smoked southern pecans and white cheddar drizzled with dried apricot-honey vinaigrette. Sandwiches vary from hearty fare to lighter bites. The Southern Belle features apricottarragon chicken salad, toasted cashews, Duke’s mayo and living sprouts on Hippie Health bread. Savory sides such as three-cheese Panko-topped macaroni and Homestead Mills white corn grits with smoked gouda and chives will take you back to your Southern roots—even if you hail from the Yankee side of the country. At dinner time, Whistle Britches really steps up to the plate. For starters, order a plate of sweet potato johnnycakes served with jalapeño cane syrup, honey butter and spiced pepitas. If you’re dining with a couple of friends, consider ordering The Whole Bird. Share 10 pieces of chicken, coleslaw, potato salad and two biscuits. You can try out over 16 craft beers or nearly a dozen on draft while you wait for your meal to be prepared just for you. And be sure to taste-test the housemade sauces on each table caddy—they’re sure to make your bird sing! Additional sandwiches and salads grace the dinner menu, so you can eat a light supper or opt for a more filling plate of deliciousness. And because no Southern family lets you leave the table without tasting dessert, we say save some room for Spiced Apple Pie or a heaping helping of S’more Custard. Last November, Chef Omar Flores received Eater Dallas’ Chef of the Year honors—a pretty spectacular feat since the restaurant had been open for only half a year. So we’re excited to see what’s on the horizon for such a new culinary venture. Located near the intersection of Preston and Frankford Roads, Whistle Britches is an easy drive from the Bush Turnpike, so it’s feasible to make the restaurant your favorite new destination for chicken made delicious.

LOCALFLAVOR good eats

Carnivore Haven Satisfy your primal appetite with house-made meats at Great Scott Sometimes, all you need is a glass of wine … and a plateful of cured meats. But don’t even think about trekking into Dallas or Fort Worth—Great Scott is a local purveyor of off-the-chartsgood charcuterie (the French word for smoked, dry-cured or cooked meats). Charcuterie may have worked its way onto many menus in the Metroplex, but our part of town was lacking this artisanal concept. So, last July, husband-and-wife team Matthew and Danielle Scott opened Great Scott in the former Carrabba’s location in Grapevine. The restaurant is relatively new to the local culinary scene, but it’s already making a name for itself. Last fall, the Fort Worth Star Telegram ranked Great Scott as one of the 12 hottest restaurants right now. It’s easy to see why. Everything here is thoughtfully and passionately made in small batches, from the house-made mozzarella to the salami, prosciutto and other meats. On our dinner visit, we ventured on a behind-the-scenes tour of the frigid meatcuring chamber, where mold-covered meats dangled from metal racks. Mold is a good thing here; the white powdery layer gives meat complexity and flavor.

Curing meat is truly a craft, and it’s one that chef Norman Grimm is passionate about. He spearheads the restaurant’s mission to always “praise the pig,” using only certified humane-raised and -handled meats. When you’re a hungry carnivore, this means you’re not just getting fresh, flavorful meats; you’re supporting farmers who raise their animals without hormones and antibiotics. Even the wine at Great Scott takes a holistic approach; many are produced at sustainable vineyards. After our crash course in meat curing (and another glass of red Zin), we got a taste of the first dish to arrive at our table: a charcuterie board with 12 different meats and cheeses. Even if you’re not particularly adventurous, it’s hard not to like rabbit rillettes or duck pâté when you see the expert care that goes into all the meats at Great Scott. The menu expands beyond charcuterie, though, from small plates such as Lobster Strudel and Tuna Tartare to steak, fish, chicken and even pizza. The main course might make it difficult to save room for dessert, but the Sticky Toffee Pudding is an absolute necessity. Our party split this warm, housefavorite sweet, which was plated with Tonka bean ice cream and a luscious mocha sauce. There wasn’t a drop left on the plate. Charcuterie is the crowning achievement at Great Scott, but each dish is a work of art—and love. The restaurant (and its many meats) is a cut above.

Experiencing New Orleans LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL IN THE BIG EASY

I

t takes more than a weekend to experience the culture and history of New Orleans. However, if you are planning a quick jaunt to The Big Easy, there are three districts you must see. Each with its own vibe, the French Quarter, the Garden District and the Arts District bring to the table new faces, new sights and new tastes.

The French Quarter One of the best ways to experience New Orleans is to stay like a local in the Quarter. Rent a room at a townhouse or carriage house; you may not experience any five-star amenities, but what the lodging lacks in down comforters and Wi-Fi is made up for in New Orleans charm. Choosing to stay in the French Quarter means the heart and soul of New Orleans is right outside your door. Aesthetically and socially diverse, the district is filled with Spanish architecture, a French market and American history. On any given Saturday, Jackson Square, named in honor of Andrew Jackson (the hero of the Battle of New

78 • FEB 17

Orleans) teems with artists, musicians and even fortunetellers. This eclectic collection of peddlers is a must-see attraction in the Quarter, so prepare to share the sidewalks with plenty of other meandering visitors. Across from Jackson Square on Decatur Street, the original Café Du Monde has been serving coffee and chicory since 1862. No trip to the Quarter is complete without a stop for a coffee and beignet, a square French-style doughnut dusted with powdered sugar. The Café serves up these culinary delights 24 hours a day. Wander from Jackson Square to the French Market District in the lower French Quarter to experience a flea market and farmers market, among other shops and cafés. The streets and avenues of the Quarter come alive at night on Decatur Street, Rampart Street and, of course, Bourbon Street. However, if your weekend plans happen to fall at the end of February, you’re in for a real treat: Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday, which falls on February 28, is preceded by parades, parades and more parades. You know what that means: gold, green and purple flags plus a sea of beads NewOrleansCVB.com, CafeDuMonde.com

BOARDINGPASS nola Garden District Located southwest of the French Quarter, the Garden District is antebellum architecture at its finest. Rather than fraternize with peoples of European descent, who lived mainly in the Quarter, new American residents chose to settle in the Garden District in 1832. This neighborhood features stunning homes and landscaped gardens. The Italianate, Greek Revival and Victorianstyle homes set on large plots reflect the wealth these American settlers amassed thanks to cash crops such as cotton and sugar. Touring the neighborhood of the Garden District by foot or by streetcar is truly a cultural and historical experience. The intersection of Prytania Street and Washington Avenue is particularly well-known. Besides shops and cafés (you can never have too many in New Orleans), you’ll find a famous cemetery—Lafayette #1. This cemetery has been many a backdrop for film, literature and photography over the years. What’s the next thing to do after a famous cemetery tour within the Garden District? You’ll definitely want to eat lunch at Commander’s Palace Restaurant. A winner of six James Beard Foundation Awards, this New Orleans landmark is a prime destination for Haute Creole cuisine. Chef Tory McPhail’s policy of “dirt to plate within 100 miles” means guests will be treated to authentic fare made with local ingredients. NewOrleansCVB.com, CommandersPalace.com

Arts/Warehouse District To explore the modern and contemporary side of New Orleans—with a bit of history on the side—look no further than the Arts/Warehouse District located northeast of the Garden District in the Uptown area. This district, filled with more than enough art for the masses, was unified by the Arts District of New Orleans Association (ADNO) to give locals and visitors a chance to enjoy another side of The Big Easy. Established in the 1990s, ADNO brings art enthusiasts to the neighborhood through festivals, gallery shows and celebrations of the performing arts. The nonprofit organization has brought together 20 contemporary art galleries, three world-class museums presenting visual and performing arts, a rotating outdoor public sculpture collection, and numerous bars and restaurants. Galleries range from modern, which often feature mixed media works such as Callan Contemporary on Julia Street, to those showcasing the classics, such as Degas Gallery. After a few hours—or more—admiring paintings, drawings and sculptures, treat yourself to a latte or cortado at Mammoth Espresso on Baronne Street. Whether you come for the fun of the French Quarter, the history of the Garden District or the beauty of the Arts District, you can tailor your weekend trip to fit your vacation style. FOR THE LOVE | LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST MARYELLEN DABAL SHARES SOME PEARLS OF RELATIONSHIP WISDOM

R

oses. Chocolate. A romantic dinner out. It’s all par for the course come Valentine’s Day. But for those who want to invest in their relationship for the long haul, there’s more to it than these traditional symbols of love. Hear from Southlake-based counselor Maryellen Dabal, M.A., L.M.F.T., on how to make your relationship the best it can be—on Valentine’s Day and beyond. BEST WISDOM YOU USE IN YOUR OWN LIFE: Not to analyze my family and friends—especially my spouse. When I am unsure what my husband is thinking or what he means by something, I feel that my skill of asking and phrasing questions is much better than the average person. COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT MARRIAGE COUNSELING: It’s not just for marriages in crisis. We are preventative with our health in eating right, so why not think of counseling in the same way? BEST WAY FOR COUPLES TO SLOW DOWN AND RECONNECT: Turn off the technology and actually look each other in the eye. Take time to put everything else aside and just be with each other. Schedule it if you have to. It’s okay to say no to family or friends when you feel you are becoming distant from each other. Have a pajama day and get to know each other again! YOUR TOP PIECE OF MARRIAGE ADVICE: Balance your needs as an individual with your needs as a couple and as part of a family. If one area is not getting enough attention and you feel out of balance, talk about it and ask for help from your spouse. Work as a team to help give balance to each other. You can do this through good communication, taking the time to listen and sharing the responsibility for happiness. COUPLES SHOULD SPEAK UP ABOUT: Intimacy and deal breakers. In addition to intimacy in the bedroom, you can have intellectual, spiritual, social and even financial intimacy. This intimacy is achieved by creating a deeper level of connection with another person through conversations that are not about the logistics of your life but your goals and dreams. Talking about deal breakers allows you both to understand what is absolutely not acceptable in a relationship or what absolutely needs to be a part of the relationship.

Southlake STYLE Magazine

WAYS TO ADD SOME FUN TO A MARRIAGE: Put the kids to bed early, light some candles, order some take-out food or make your favorite meal and then snuggle up in the living room to watch one of your favorite movies. If you are lucky enough to go out for an adventure, try creating a date box and fill it with written ideas of things you would like to do on a date. Pull an idea from the box and be prepared to do what it says. Have some fun and be creative! NO. 1 TIP FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY MARRIAGE: Prepare for your marriage this year like you would for your wedding reception or for a very special occasion. Discuss the details and your expectations with complete honesty. We all grow up in different environments. What you think is normal may not be normal for your partner. Know your partner’s background and what he or she sees as normal. Does it match or come close to yours? IF I WASN’T A COUNSELOR, I’D: Most likely be running a nonprofit agency of some kind. I enjoy using both my business and counseling education to further the lives of others. MY IDEA OF THE PERFECT DAY IS: Waking up without an alarm, spending time with my family at an amusement park, squeezing in a little alone time to relax and then ending the day with a swim in the ocean. I’M MOST PROUD OF MY: Family and how we work together to support each other in achieving our individual and family goals. MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF MY JOB: That individuals, couples and families allow me to earn their trust and invite me on this journey of growth with them. I am sharing the knowledge I have with those who need it and can use it to better their lives. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Created in 1991 in the United Kingdom, the troupe played around the world in the early 1990s before landing in the Orpheum Theatre in New York City. The group, which has toured the United States continuously since then, with permanent shows now in Las Vegas and New York, will perform for six straight days at Music Hall.
