Sharing Memories Marriage isn’t easy and word must be spreading. The share of American adults (age 25 and older) who have never been married is at an all-time high, according to recent data from the Pew Research Center. Comparatively speaking, in 2012 one in five adults had never tied the knot; in the 1960s, this figure was one in 10. Despite the proliferation of online matchmaking sites, e-matrimony is not always in the cards. And while Christians and everyone else are mingling, apparently staying single is for more than farmers only. So, instead of citing the reasons why marriage rates continue to decline, we’ve decided to give Cupid a hand during this most abbreviated month of love. In doing so, we’ve enlisted the support of three married Southlake couples who together have over 150 years worth of what our editor Audrey Sellers calls Enduring Love. After nearly 54 years of marriage, George Contos still remembers what his bride-to-be was wearing the first time he laid eyes on her. The memory is all the more impressive after learning the swooning squire walked right into a wall trying to get a second look. And we all know of examples where love needed a second chance. The Welch’s share how their love endured a decade before their paths crossed in wedded bliss. As they now approach 40 years together, Jim and Betty are as inseparable as ever. After world wars, economic ups and downs, and scores of children and grandchildren, these remarkable couples are still in the throes of love. They mention cherishing moments together and worrying more about what’s right than what’s wrong to be amongst their tenets for longevity in love. Like George, I too remember the first time I saw my love. I was driving at the time so I’m grateful I didn’t hit a wall. I’m also grateful our paths continued to cross in college. I still have 30 years of memories to make to catch up to our featured couples, but I can’t wait to share them with my grandchildren and my wife by my side.

community THE MIRACLE LEAGUE OF SOUTHLAKE PREPARES FOR INAUGURAL FUNDRAISER It won’t be long before you hear those famous words, “Play ball!” But before The Miracle League of Southlake kicks off its spring season on March 26, the organization is celebrating the successes of its inaugural season at its first fundraiser. The community is invited to the Southlake Hilton on February 19 for an unforgettable evening of reflection, fun and fundraising. It’s an evening to look back on the joys of the first season as well as raise operating funds for 2016. For those interested in sponsoring the winter meeting and recognition banquet, opportunities range from $2,000 for a single-table purchase up to the Grand Slam level, a $20,000 investment. To learn more about sponsorships, contact Phillip Meyer at phil@MiracleLeagueOfSouthlake.com. SAVE THE DATE FOR SCLA ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT On February 27, the Southlake Carroll Lacrosse Association (SCLA) presents “A Night at the Races,” a fundraising event held at The Marq. The evening includes Southern cuisine, live and silent auctions, video horse racing, a Kentucky Derby hats contest and more. All sponsors and donors will be recognized in the event program and via electronic ads during the event. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities are available, or if you’d like to help by donating auction items, SCLA needs items such as sporting event tickets, travel items, and restaurant and retail gift cards. Call 817.455.4265 to sponsor, donate or learn more.

CARROLL ELEMENTARY PTO PUT PRINCIPAL WAGNON ON THE WALL The Carroll Elementary School (CES) PTO put the fun in fundraising last month by duct taping Principal Stacy Wagnon to the wall. It was the exciting kickoff to the PTO’s spring fundraising event, Totally Back to the 80s. Students, teachers and parents could buy a strip of duct tape for $5 a piece. Altogether, more than 500 strips of tape were purchased, bringing in more than $2,500 for PTO funds. “Ms. Wagnon is the duct tape that holds this school community together,” PTO President Susan Berlew said in a press release. “She is always supportive of our PTO efforts and appreciative of the money raised to help our children learn and grow.” CES PTO’s Spring Fundraiser will take place March 5 at the Trophy Club Country Club. The evening will include a live and silent auction, dinner and dancing along with prizes and surprises. All funds raised will support CES.

SOUTHLAKE RANKS IN TOP 11 PERCENT OF CITIES WITH CREDIT CARD SUSTAINABILITY With American consumers estimated to have spent $630.5 billion—much of which with plastic—during the recent holiday shopping season, the credit card comparison website CardHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s Cities with the Highest and Lowest Credit Card Debts. CardHub’s analysts drew upon data from TransUnion, the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Census Bureau and CardHub’s proprietary credit card payoff calculator to determine the number of months required to pay off the average credit-card balances and associated finance costs in 2,547 U.S. cities. Southlake tied for a favorable 279th ranking, putting it just outside the top 10 percent in the nation, according to this particular list. The city’s average credit card debt is $11,512, with a cost to pay it off averaging $2,363. The average amount of time it would take to pay off these numbers is 32 months according to CardHub’s Credit Card Payoff Calculator.

COMMUNITY MOURNS LOSS OF BOB STEELE, RETIRED SOUTHLAKE FIRE CHIEF Southlake said goodbye to retired Fire Chief, Bob Steele, who died January 7. He was 92 years old. “Steele, along with his wife Crystal, and their children, moved to Southlake in the 1950s. Steele began his career in 1967 as a volunteer firefighter and was the first paid fire chief for the City of Southlake, serving for more than 20 years. Thanks to his leadership and work with City mayors, council members and staff, he helped to create the outstanding fire department we have today. In fact in 2010, the City proclaimed Steele a ‘living legend’ and thanked him for his work as the City’s longest-serving fire chief,” according to an article on MySouthlakeNews.com.

DRAGON WATER POLO TEAMS PREPARE FOR SEASON AHEAD The Carroll Dragons boys’ and girls’ water polo teams are set to begin a challenging season. Starting in March, both teams have some big shoes to fill in order to match their success from last year. The 2015-16 girls’ varsity water polo team begins the season as the defending state champions. They claimed the crown after defeating Clear Springs with an 18-4 victory in the 2015-14 TISCA State Water Polo Championship. The boys’ varsity team hopes to improve on their fifth place finish at last year’s TISCA tournament. Head coach Joey Yglesias said, “the girls’ team success can be attributed to hard work the girls put in during the regular school season and the off season. The high school season lasts only three months, so any additional work they do during the off season pays off tremendously.” The Dragons water polo season runs from March through May with tournaments taking place every weekend at various facilities throughout the North Texas region.

CARROLL MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS BRAVED THE COLD TO VOLUNTEER Last month, 72 Carroll Middle School (CMS) student athletes from the boys’ and girls’ Cross Country teams loaded on buses and journeyed to South Ft. Worth for a morning of volunteering with the Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB). This was the school’s second-annual philanthropy event with the nonprofit, which is the primary source of donated food for hungerrelief charities and feeding programs in 13 North Texas counties. “For the past two years, our Cross Country teams have adopted the food bank as a team philanthropy event. I’m always amazed at what it does for the community, and I’m proud of our Dragons for stepping up to serve those in need,” said Boys’ Cross Country Coach Zach Sellers. Claire Stephens, girls’ Cross Country coach, said: “I was impressed by the attitudes of our kids. They all wanted to help in every way possible, with smiles on their faces even in the freezing weather.”

CISD TURNS TO PORTABLE CLASSROOMS AS PART OF SHORT-TERM GROWTH PLAN In an effort to manage student growth and avoid major attendance rezoning, the Carroll School Board approved a recommendation to purchase portable classrooms, according to a story on MySouthlakeNews.com. The portable classrooms, which will likely be used for pullout programs and not actual homeroom classrooms, will be set up at Carroll Elementary, Johnson Elementary and possibly Walnut Grove Elementary. They’re expected to remain in place for the next couple of years although the timeline could change if enrollment surges beyond 2016-17 projections. The short-term plan is to avoid hundreds of families having to move schools. “We won’t utilize portables long-term, but this short-term plan approved by the Board gives us the opportunity to let the committee complete its recommendation so that we can formulate a long-term plan for Dragon families,” said Dr. Faltys.

CARROLL MEDICAL ACADEMY BROUGHT SMILES, JOY TO THOSE IN NEED Carroll Medical Academy (CMA) students spent their holiday spreading goodwill in three different ways. CMA’s Diaper Drive, which was started by CSHS student Nikhil Ravi in his freshman year, brought in approximately 7,000 individual items for preemies at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Over the past four years, the drive has raised approximately 20,000 items. CMA Student Board Members Nikhil Ravi, Christie Ballew and Tiger Yang dropped off the diapers during their holiday break. Additionally, CMA’s freshman and sophomore class adopted three angels from GRACE. They raised several hundred dollars and purchased Christmas gifts for the kids of families in need. Continuing on with the spirit of giving, CMA’s Student Board organized a cookie drive, baking more than 200 cookies for each class to decorate. The cookies were then hand-delivered by the CMA Student Council to the GRACE Christmas Cottage, a program that provides families with Christmas gifts for their family at no cost to them.

SOUTHLAKE BIDS ADIEU TO WAL-MART NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET Wal-Mart, the world’s largest superstore chain, shuttered its Southlake location last month. The neighborhood market is one of 11 in North Texas to go. The retailer plans to close 269 of its 11,000 stores worldwide. Residents now have to turn to the supercenter in Grapevine or North Richland Hills. “Closing stores is never an easy decision. But it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” the company’s CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. In total, Wal-Mart is closing 12 supercenters, meaning Texas accounts for a quarter of those closures. More than 95 percent of the stores set to be closed in the U.S. are within 10 miles of another Wal-Mart, according to ABC News. Despite the announcement, Wal-Mart still plans to open 25 new stores in Texas in 2016, including three in Frisco, according to The Dallas Morning News.

ENDU RING LOV E: BY AUDR EY S ELLE R S

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-

Long time Southlake married couples recount their favorite memories and share their wisdom.

Some love stories, like Romeo and Juliet, transcend the ages. The characters mesmerize us, generation after generation, with their undying love and devotion. But as captivating as they are, some of history s most compelling romances exist only in the words of a sonnet or on the stage of a theater production. This love, while enchanting, isn t really real. What s real is when two people find love, nurture it and grow it together over a lifetime. Audrey Hepburn once said: The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. The Southlake couples you ll meet in the next few pages are living this statement. They ve been together through decades of life s ups and downs, and they still smile, laugh and hold hands. For anyone who wishes for a lifetime of love, get inspired by these couples.

Pete and Jean Standbridge MARRIED NEARLY 60 YEARS

Pete and Jean Standbridge aren’t superstitious. It’s a good thing considering that they met on a Friday the 13th 59 years ago and also got engaged on a Friday the 13th, a mere three months after they met. The 13th, it seems, is their lucky day. The two met on a blind date and say it was love at first sight. They tied the knot September 29, 1956, and less than three months later, Pete got drafted. This didn’t keep them apart, though. When he attended basic training in Fort Bragg, one of the world’s largest U.S. military installations, Jean followed. And when Pete was shipped to Germany, Jean went too. The newlyweds were inseparable. The Standbridges didn’t wait long to start a family—and expand it. Their first son was born in an Army hospital in Germany, and three more children quickly followed. With fewer than six years between their daughter and three sons, Pete and Jean had their hands full and their budget stretched. “We weren’t very wealthy in the early years,” Pete says. “We had to tell the kids often that they couldn’t do the same things that others did just because there were four of them. It was hard to say no to some things, but we got through it.” “My feeling was that we could get through anything as long as we were together,” Jean says. Jean stayed home to raise their children while Pete built a career in the insurance business, working for the same company for 41 years. The family shifted cities often for his job, moving to Virginia, New York and New Jersey, and finally settled in Chicago for 25 years. The Standbridges moved to Watermere, Southlake’s luxury retirement community, about four years ago to be closer to their two children who live in the Metroplex. 22

Though their address changed a few times, their faith and their family traditions remained firmly rooted. “No matter where we live, church is an integral part of our life,” Jean says. As for traditions, the Standbridges always took a Christmas photo and enjoyed the holiday at home. “Grandparents were invited,” says Jean, “but Christmas was always at our house.” As the children grew up and had kids of their own (Pete and Jean have eight grandchildren), their traditions evolved. Now, the Standbridges trek around the country from one house to another, sometimes traveling on Christmas day to spend time with family members. “We think our kids should have their own traditions,” says Jean. When it comes to building traditions with loved ones, the children are following in their parents’ footsteps. All four of the Standbridges’ kids have been married for over 20 years. Pete and Jean didn’t know they were setting such a sparkling example for their children; they simply treated each other with respect and consideration. They were never big on buying gifts for each other (“If we want something, we go out and buy it,” says Pete), but they always make a point to celebrate their anniversary with dinner at Truluck’s. As they reflect on their many decades of marriage, they realize their golden years are indeed golden. “One of the luckiest things was having our children young,” Pete says. “When they left, we played even harder. We were young enough to enjoy the empty nest rather than fret about it.” “We’ve been so fortunate and blessed,” Jean says. “We have many happy memories.” Some of the standouts, she says, include a Disney cruise in celebration of her 65th birthday, and family reunions in funfilled destinations such as Steamboat Springs and Vail. Pete says they were able to enjoy more adventures as the kids got older simply because there was more money available. “Four tuitions, with no loans involved, is not easy,” he laughs. These days, the Standbridges are often traveling near and far to various events for their grandchildren, whether it’s lacrosse, soccer, choir performances or graduations. They’re also avid golfers and hit the links at Sky Creek Ranch in Hidden Lakes when the weather is pleasant. Whatever they’re doing, as long as they’re together, they’re happy. Jean says that Pete “is the most loyal person you’d ever want to meet. I love being able to snuggle up next to him every night.” And about Jean, Pete says that he loves how much “she cares about people, beyond family. She’s very considerate.” And, he adds, “I love her cookies and breakfast cakes.” Friday the 13th might be an unlucky day for some, but not for the Standbridges. They’ve been lucky in love for nearly six decades. WORDS OF WISDOM:

George and Carolyn Contos MARRIED NEARLY 54 YEARS

When George Contos first laid eyes on his wife, Carolyn, he was lovestruck. So much so, in fact, that he walked straight into a wall as he was getting a good look at her. “She had on this really neat-looking pair of black shorts,” he remembers. Ever since he ran into that wall, George knew that Carolyn was his match. “We had all kinds of people we could have dated, but there was never any doubt that she was the one,” he says. “Sometimes you’re lucky in love, and I was.” The couple’s love story begins as a classic romance between a football player and cheerleader. The two dated all through high school in Corpus Christi, and two weeks after graduation, the young lovebirds got married. They wed on June 15, 1962, and then headed off to college. With the Vietnam War raging at that time, George began receiving notices to be drafted. But Carolyn had no plans to send her new husband off to war. “Carolyn, in her infinite wisdom, decided that if she was pregnant I’d get a deferment,” he says. “So our plan of not having children until after we both graduated college went by the wayside.” “He didn’t get drafted, though,” Carolyn laughs. She dropped out of college to raise their only child, James, while George balanced working full-time along with his college courses. They lived in college housing and had to provide for their young family by themselves. Life got more challenging when Carolyn was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1967. “Things were tough, but we stayed together,” she says. “That’s just who we are.” Things for the Contos’ began to tick upwards after George graduated from college and started working for a junior college. He worked hard, earned a good reputation, and was brought to North Texas to help start Tarrant County Junior College, known now as TCC. 24

One of their favorite things to do now is to meet up with other couples at Watermere, where they’ve lived for two years. “We go to dinner to socialize,” Jean says. “The table we’re at is always the biggest and loudest table.” They also enjoy going to movies, plays and simply laughing together. “We’re always cutting up,” says George. “We banter back and forth. We have so much fun together.” The couple says that their marriage has only gotten stronger after being together more than a half century. They hold hands and do little things out of love. George brings Carolyn coffee in the morning and gets her flowers. “I don’t wait for Valentine’s Day or our anniversary,” he adds. “I do it to say ‘I love you and I’m thinking about you.’” Carolyn likes to leave small gifts or love notes for George to show her affection. While a circle of friends in the Watermere community certainly enriches their lives, they say that all they really need to be happy is each other. “We’d rather be each other’s company than anybody else’s company,” says George. “A lot of times, when you get to be our age, you see the men go off in one direction and the women in the other direction. When you see one of us, you see the other one.” Together is all George and Carolyn want to be. And in good times and bad, that’s exactly what they’ve always been. WORDS OF WISDOM: “Take your marriage vows seriously. If

Carolyn went back to school once their son started grade school. She enrolled at the junior college and then continued her education at the University of North Texas, earning a Bachelor’s, Master’s and eventually a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. “Once she got going in college, she didn’t know when to quit,” George jokes. Carolyn started her own practice, working only with people who had a physical disability. Although they were focused on their careers and raising their son, the couple always made time for each other. Many of their favorite memories are from their backpacking trips together, where they’d pack freeze-dried food and explore the Colorado Rockies for weeks at a time. “Those backpacking trips were the best,” George recalls. “It was just the two of us together, seeing things that not many other people have seen. We have a lot of beautiful memories from those trips.” The couple enjoyed an active lifestyle for years, and even when Carolyn had to start using a scooter in 1984 as a result of the multiple sclerosis, it didn’t dampen her spirit. “Carolyn made up her mind that she’s going to be as active as she could be,” says George. “The scooter doesn’t hamper her at all.”

Jim and Betty Welch

MARRIED NEARLY 39 YEARS Not all couples find love the first time around. For Jim and Betty Welch, lasting love came as a second marriage. The two met in San Francisco while traveling in 1964. Betty, a beautiful airline stewardess, and Jim, a handsome professional football player for the Baltimore Colts (now the Indianapolis Colts), felt an immediate attraction. The connection was so powerful for Betty that she recalls looking at Jim and thinking: “I love him.” They talked, exchanged contact information and flew back to their hometowns—Betty to New York and Jim to Baltimore. When Betty returned home, she rushed to her mailbox, eager to see if Jim had sent any correspondence. What she found was devastating: Jim sent a letter apologizing that he was married and had two children. “And that was it,” says Betty. “It broke my heart.” With Jim always in the back of her mind, Betty moved on. She married another man, Bob, and had two children. In the 1960s, she says, that’s what most women wanted: to be married with children. She was living her dream, yet she never forgot about Jim. “I always knew what was going on with him, and he knew what was going on with me,” she says. Bob was also aware of Betty’s feelings. “He knew all about Jim. He was a good husband and a loving father, but I wasn’t in love with him,” Betty says. “I didn’t want to love anybody like I loved Jim.” In 1974, a decade after the two met, Jim called to let Betty know that he was getting a divorce. The couple met for lunch, and Betty knew it: She was still in love with him. 26

Accredited Private Education in Southlake “I went through several years of trying times,” Betty says. “Jim never pressured me to divorce Bob. But I eventually knew it was something I had to do for me.” Betty divorced Bob and exchanged vows with her longtime love on August 17, 1977 in the iconic Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. She and Jim then danced the night away at their wedding reception at the Rainbow Room. The newlyweds, who had six children between them, settled into their blendedfamily life in New York and later Wyckoff, New Jersey (they moved to Trophy Club in 2001 to be closer to family). Betty stayed home to care for the children while Jim worked on Wall Street. A few years after they got married, the thought of having another child crossed their minds. But with a full house and Betty at age 38, they were doubtful she’d get pregnant. Life, like it often does, had a surprise in store for them. Their son, John David, was born August 5, 1981, which happens to be Betty’s birthday. “He was the best birthday present I’ve ever received,” says Betty. Altogether, the couple has seven children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jim and Betty have shared a romance that could very well be a popular Hollywood flick or a best-selling novel. “When I tell my story to people, it’s like a Nicholas Sparks book,” she says. Their love story shares many similarities to The Notebook—right down to the heartbreak of Alzheimer’s. Jim was diagnosed with the disease six years ago. That’s the main reason the couple moved to Watermere—to get topnotch care. Though they’ve had help from their beloved caregiver, Jeannette, for nearly two years, Jim now requires 24-hour assistance. He recently moved to Isle at Watermere, which offers memory-care support, while Betty continues to live in their condo with their Pomeranian, Prince. They reside in separate residences now, but they still see each other daily. Betty visits Jim for dinner each evening, and the two are content just being together. Betty lost her mother to Alzheimer’s and understands how things go. “I’m having a hard time because I don’t want to let him go. I lost him once and we got back together. I feel like I’m losing him again, but I know I’m not,” she says. “He’s the same incredible and loving man I met 51 years ago.” Still, she counts her blessings. “I’ve been so blessed, even with what we’re going through now,” she says. “We’ve had the most beautiful relationship. I thank God that He has given us such a good life.” WORDS OF WISDOM:

SPARKLE & S HI N E

When it comes to custom jewelry, the options are as beautiful and unique as you can imagine.

[

]

Every piece is different, as is every customer, but in speaking with the experts, there are some things you can do to make sure that you love your custom jewelry piece for years to come.

32

Y

ou know the commercial—the one where the lady begins to slip on that ring, this necklace, those earrings. Dramatic music plays in the background, the tempo getting faster and faster until she’s finally wearing that perfect, glittering accessory she has always wanted. It’s a fantasy we all know well, whether you want to be the one receiving or the one giving. Now imagine that the jewelry in question is so special, unique and original that no one else ever has or will ever have anything like it. Welcome to the world of custom jewelry. “Everyone has an idea of the perfect ring, the perfect everything,” says David Benavides of Markham Fine Jewelers in Southlake. Maybe you’re ready to go custom for yourself or someone else. Custom jewelry design is an absolutely touching one-of-a-kind way to tell a loved one how much he or she is cared for—even if that loved one is you.

IS CUSTOM FOR YOU? So when should you start thinking about designing your own special sparkler? “If someone is looking for certain unique designs and has personal preferences in a certain piece of jewelry, we advise them to consider custom,” says Ali Zameer, celebrity jeweler for Marc Samuels Jewelers in Grapevine. Some examples? You have an idea in mind for a necklace or ring, but you can’t seem to find anything that looks like it. Maybe you like certain features of one bracelet and aspects of another, and you’d like to put them together in one piece.

A custom jeweler can bring your jewelry dreams to life. Perhaps you’ve been holding onto an heirloom piece of jewelry or stones that you would like to reuse in something new. If you’ve seen something sparkling in a magazine, or something that you lost, custom is a good way to go. And the best reason to go custom? When you’re ready to create something that is completely oneof-a-kind. Whatever fantasy jewelry you have in mind, keep in mind that a custom-designed item can cost substantially more than one that already exists. Depending on the complexity of the design and how long it takes to get it made, a custom design can cost up to three times more than one that has already been created.

33

Many jewelers will be able to modify existing designs to fit your preferences. “You can take one of our mountings in the store, and if you want to put a different stone in it, we can do that by having a mounting remade, but the piece has already been designed,” says Benavides.

FIND AN EXPERT In looking for a jeweler, try to take a look at the designer’s previous work, and be sure you find someone who has a style you like. If you prefer your designs clean and minimalist, you won’t want to choose a designer known for more traditional or over-the-top looks. Your designer is the expert in this situation, and his or her finishing touches will be seen in the final product. Besides, you’ll want to rely on your designer to fill in any details you aren’t set on. As far as sketching out your future one-of-a-kind bauble, you may already have a definite idea of what you want. Even if you don’t, you can create an “inspiration bank” of images you like. You can fill it with jewelry, old photos, even pictures of flowers. Even if you’re not an artist, try to sketch out what you’re looking for. “The technology is so advanced that, whatever you can think of—if you can picture it or draw it—we can do it,” says Benavides.

HOW CUSTOM WORKS In custom jewelry, the customer and designer work together to build a design of the piece they’d like. Metals are chosen, and types of stones are selected. The designer then creates a rendering—a full-color, lifelike image of what the design will look like once completed. Old-school designers do this kind of work by hand, but today, most jewelers let a computer do the drawing for them. No matter what, you should expect to be able to see a rendering, so you can make adjustments if necessary.

34

[

]

BE AWARE OF EXPECTATIONS If you’re planning on requesting something to be made from a photo, be aware that it may not look like an exact reproduction. “If you’re duplicating something out of a picture, it will never look the same side by side,” says Benavides. “It’ll be close. There’s always going to be that element that the designer has done that you can’t replicate.”

35

[

]

SELECT SENTIMENTAL STONES WISELY When it comes to using heirloom gems or reusing gems, make sure to check the quality of the stones, and ask yourself if you might want something that has a little bit more sparkle. “It’s pretty common that a customer wants to use something that has sentimental value, but the diamonds may not be the nicest quality or may be a different color than what they’re looking for,” says Benavides. For this reason, he adds, mixing and matching a variety of stones can also be a problem.

“If, for some reason, they wanted it a little thinner or thicker, or they want to add a couple of stones here or take a stone away, we can do that all on the computer,” says Benavides. From there, the machines take over, creating a life-size wax model of the piece. “Literally, the customer can put the wax on to see if they like it. It is the ring, just in wax,” says Benavides. If you have changes, those are made and a new model is created, until the customer is happy with the model. Then the jewelry is cast in metal, stones are placed, and any finishing touches are applied. The process takes at least a month—and often much longer, depending on how many changes have to be made throughout the process. When asked for his favorite and least favorite parts of the custom jewelry experience, Zameer says: “The worst part, I would think, will be the time it takes to actually get it done.” It’s worth it to be patient, he says, to see your design come to life. “You are actually bringing someone’s dream to reality,” says Zameer. “The best part is when they see their dream piece, and they can touch and feel it.” Benavides agrees that this is the best part of custom design work. “It’s nice when you meet somebody who says, ‘It doesn’t exist but in my head,’” says Benavides. “The moment they first look at the finished piece, seeing their imagination actually take life. That’s what I love most.”

10THINGS observe / comment / reminisce

Southlake: How do we love thee? Let us count the ways—or at least 10 of them. This month is all about love, so we’re professing 10 reasons we think our city is a pretty fantastic place to live.

10 THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN SOUTHLAKE 1. IT’S TRULY A BEAUTIFUL CITY. The tree-lined streets of Continental Boulevard showcase the wonderful bronze sculptures and flowers of our roundabouts—proof that even our traffic looks good. 2. WE HAVE THE BEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN TEXAS. It’s not just our Dragon Pride talking; multiple sources back it up. Carroll ISD tops the charts from academics to the arts. And c’mon do other public schools have their own sports magazine? 3. TONS OF FESTIVALS AND ANNUAL EVENTS. Community happenings like Art in the Square, Stars and Stripes and Home for the Holidays are but a few of the more popular free events that continue to impress. 4. DRAGONS. EVERYWHERE. T-shirts, bumper stickers and playgrounds—you can’t go far in this town without a Dragon sighting. Our favorite? The undulating lawn dragon at Old Union. 5. WE’RE A COMMUNITY THAT GIVES BACK. In this city of “Coach Dads” and “PTO Moms,” even our littlest residents have big hearts. Been to a child’s “Do-Good” birthday party lately? 6. CELEB SIGHTINGS. Tony Romo and Jason Witten are regularly spotted on the sidelines at Southlake youth basketball games. And there must be somebody famous behind the wheel of that Arancio Orange Lamborghini we always see. 7. OUR LOCAL FLAVOR. A slice of Armend’s pizza, a Johnny B’s Dragon Burger or the side of comfort that is Feedstore’s mac and cheese. 8. INCREDIBLE CITY VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF. Paid or unpaid, they all make Southlake special. But Children’s Story Time with Ms. Elizabeth at the Southlake library will melt your heart. 9. WATER FEATURES. We may not have enough water for our lawns, but watching it recirculate up, through and around all our fountains has to be the next best thing. 10. YOU WON’T FIND NICER PEOPLE ANYWHERE. Whether it’s welcoming a newcomer via the Southlake Moms Facebook page or the many friendly parent-teacher meetings, Southlake is simply a nice town.

What would you add to the list? Tweet us @SouthlakeStyle #10Things or comment on this story at SouthlakeStyle.com.

MEDICINE

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake 1545 E. Southlake Blvd., Southlake 817.748.8700 | TexasHealthSouthlake.com Texas Health Southlake’s story is about a journey. A culture. A family. Texas Health Southlake began more than 10 years ago with 25 founding physician partners, in conjunction with Texas Health Resources. It is the founding partners’ vision and continued direction that helped guide Texas Health Southlake to become a highly respected, award-winning, acute care facility with more than 250 attending physicians in over 18 specialties. As Southlake’s first hospital, the staff places a high priority on being involved in the communities they serve. They have partnerships with 60 non-profit charitable organizations, the staff volunteers hundreds of hours each year, and they have over 40 national and state awards and recognition. Following three expansion projects, the hospital has grown from six to 16 private inpatient suites, and four to six operating room suites. Recently, the hospital broke ground on a 53,000 square foot expansion that will increase their total bed count to 23. During the past 10 years one thing that has remained the same is the founding physicians’ vision: to be the premier provider of selected clinical services; an organization where employees want to work; physicians want to practice; and patients receive compassionate care. The physicians on the medical staff of Texas Health Southlake are independent practitioners and are not employees or agents of the hospital.

Then an email became his epiphany. It was a booking request for an engagement party. He then realized he could make a living doing what he loved to do since he was a kid. But he’s more than just a guy with a guitar. He plays multiple instruments and uses effects and looping to create the unique arrangements of popular songs played in his solo show. ho knew sweating could be so healthy? And we aren’t just talking about perspiration-inducing cardio routines. Just sweating— without even lifting a barbell or foot—offers a multitude of health benefits. If they aren’t yet, personal saunas should be on your radar. JNH Lifestyles has created a line of saunas that make a great addition to any outside leisure area next to the pool and spa—or anywhere indoors you deem fit. The Freedom 3 Person Infrared Sauna is not your typical heat-up-some-rocks-and-sit-aroundin-steam sauna. Rather than steam and heat from a traditional heat-sourced sauna, the infrared rays penetrate the skin to cause you to sweat. It is as simple as walking outside on a warm day in the sun and breaking a sweat, not from extreme effort, but solely from the sun’s infrared rays. Made from Canadian Western Red Cedar wood, the Freedom 3 Person Infrared Sauna arrives at your door ready to assemble. Using tongue and groove snap-together pieces, it is easy to assemble in one room and disassemble to move to another. Dual-wall insulation means no heat expansion of the unit, so it will always fit in any tight space.

Featuring eight carbon-fiber far-infrared heaters located in the back, side and calf areas, the sauna is equipped with a digital control panel that regulates temperature and the duration of how long you plan to sweat. If your relaxation session involves listening to your favorite tunes on your iPod or other device, the sauna has a sound system that includes two speakers and an amplifier. If it’s on your list to stay well this winter, getting hot in a box allows you to sweat away toxins and improve your health. For those who live a mainly sedentary life, void of regular cardio activities, it goes to reason: these individuals don’t sweat much. However, studies show that sweating, particularly deep sweating, can be beneficial in a number of ways. During the winter months, viruses and bacteria run rampant—jumping from a handshake or a hug right into the body. Fighting these nasty bugs can be as simple as sitting in a sauna regularly to sweat out the bacteria and other toxins that can make you sick. And that’s about as much as you need to know scientifically to recognize how a personal, infrared sauna aids in winter wellness. Grab two of your closest friends and enjoy a sweat session in your own personal sauna.

A Square Meal BARLEY & BOARD BRINGS SOPHISTICATED EATS AND DRINKS TO DENTON’S DOWNTOWN SQUARE.

BARLEY & BOARD 100 W. Oak St. Denton 940.566.3900 BarleyAndBoard.com

66 •FEB 16

Denton is all grown up. Well, at least when it comes to food. Barley & Board, the city’s first brewpub restaurant, caters to grown-up tastes. If you thought the college town just 25 miles north of Southlake only served dollar beers and greasy bar food, give it a second look. Menu selections at Barley & Board range from eclectic (Bacon Wrapped Medjool Dates and Parisian Gnocchi, for example) to classic (Turkey Melt and Mom’s Meatball Sub). Classified as New American cuisine, we just call it good. Chef Chad Kelley, who heads up the kitchen as Executive Chef, says the restaurant is all about fun plating and clean, honest food at a decent price. “For an all-scratch kitchen, we have a lot of labor-intensive items on the menu at a good price point,” he says. To wash down all the affordable gourmet fare, Barley & Board offers 36 craft beers on tap, including house brews, which are made in

20-gallon batches. Chef Kelley is a big part of the restaurant’s brewing program; he’s one of the assistant brewers. It’s a chance for him to expand his culinary talents beyond the kitchen – and have some fun, too. “I wear two hats here. It’s a great time,” he says. “When we brew, it’s kind of like a science lab. It’s definitely a source for creative energy.” For those who would rather sip on something other than beer, there are plenty of craft cocktails to pick from, including many with unique ingredients such as strawberry-sage syrup, bacon-infused rye and honey-lavender syrup. As for the menu, it’s gourmet but not fancy. Anything too fussy wouldn’t fit in with the area, and Barley & Board is assuredly right at home in Denton’s historic downtown square. There’s even an interesting history to the restaurant’s location. It’s situated in the Lacy Hotel, an

establishment built in 1884 that, according to reputation, served some of the best meals around. More than 120 years later, the site is still a place to enjoy good, authentic food. Barley & Board stays true to its historical roots while incorporating modern elements such as distressed wood and metal. The outer walls reveal the hotel’s original brick, while the inside overflows with rustic charm. No detail was overlooked, from the giant light-bulb fixtures suspended from the ceiling to the old-fashioned pull-flush toilets. If you visit during the day, the main dining hall is sunny and bright, flooded with natural light from windows all around. A smaller space upstairs is suited for more intimate dining. Contemporary rock filters through the restaurant by day, with music transitioning to jazz for evening diners. The hip atmosphere wouldn’t mean much if the food wasn’t any good. But thankfully, it’s delicious and well worth the trip. The menu offers an appetizing selection of soups, salads, sandwiches and flatbreads, as well as larger plates such as Hanger Steak, Brazen Two-Faced Quail and Slow Roasted Pork Tenderloin. With so many creative bites on the menu, it’s actually something simple that stands out: the B&B Burger. “It was unintentional, but our burger has been a huge success. We tested all different kinds of things: little gourmet burgers with roasted mushrooms and smoked cheeses. We tried getting really fancy with it,” Chef Kelley says. “But at the end of the day, it wasn’t a burger I wanted to eat all the time.” What ended up working best is a mouthwatering combination of double meat, double slices of American cheese, Thousand Island dressing and house-made pickles. It’s sheer burger euphoria that’s put over the top when served alongside thin, crunchy French fries. “I don’t often use American cheese,” says Chef Kelley, “but sometimes it has its place. Certain things like that just make [the burger]. And I love the matchstick fries. Each one is crispy.” There are also plenty of classic pub items that are perfect for pairing with a cold beer – snacks such as German Rye Soft Pretzels and Blue Cheese Potato Chips. We enjoyed the Oliversity Board, a creative plate featuring a half-dozen olive varieties including the soft Gaeta and the vibrant-green Castelvetrano. If Denton wasn’t on your radar as a culinary destination, it should be. Barley & Board brings sophisticated flavors and homemade brews to the heart of the college town that’s just a short trip away. Perhaps it’s time to visit a different square, if only for a meal and a cold one.

Perfect Pairings How to select chocolate and wine for your Valentine. All you need is love. And maybe a little wine and chocolate—at least for Valentine’s Day. But we’re not talking about grabbing any bottle of wine and a heartshaped box of chocolate; there’s an art to pairing the two. Whether you’re a foodie, wine aficionado, or you’re just looking to savor a sweet moment, here’s what local experts have to say about enjoying wine and chocolate together. For starters, remember the basic rule for the best pairing: the wine should always be a little sweeter than the chocolate. “You don’t ever want to select a wine that’s drier, meaning not as sweet, because it will make the wine seem sour,” explains Glenn Verk, Wine and Beer Manager for Central Market. He recommends the traditional pairing of milk chocolate with red wine, specifically softer, riper reds such as a pinot noir from Santa Barbara rather than an Oregon pinot. With dark chocolate, which tends to be bitter, Verk says dry reds are the way to go as they will taste more fruit-forward and ripe. White chocolate, he says, pairs nicely with any red or white wine, or you could even pair it with a bottle of bubbly. “There’s something about champagne that’s so light and lifted on the palate that it doesn’t taste overly tart,” says Verk.

68 •FEB 16

Sarabeth Yeli Marshall, artisan chocolatier at Yelibelly Chocolates in Southlake, suggests dark wine such as a pinot noir, shiraz or merlot. Or, you can just enjoy your wine directly in your chocolate. Yelibelly offers a selection of wine-infused truffles to take your Valentine’s Day (and your taste buds) to the next level. “Just like wine, chocolate has so many nuances,” she says. “A wine-infused truffle is a taste to be savored.” Yelibelly’s best-selling truffle is the habanero-infused truffle, which has a unique spiciness without being too powerful. It’s available all year long, but for Valentine’s Day, the shop is rolling out something special: its Sweetheart Box, which includes tantalizing flavors such as cinnamon Schnapps, chili pepper and toasted Hawaiian coconut. Want a unique experience? Have the chocolate come to you. A tasting party is just the way to get your sweet fix while exploring various chocolates. You just might learn a little something, too. “We taste chocolates from five different countries and discuss the difference between them. I also include a chocolatier’s amuse—a unique chocolate dessert I prepare special for the group,” says Marshall. “Our tasting parties teach you how to truly enjoy all the flavors in chocolate.” If this sounds like a fun date night or girls’ night, be sure to book a few weeks in advance; Marshall says weekends tend to be busy. “The beauty of chocolate is that every piece can be excellent, depending on who is enjoying it,” Marshall says. And when you have a great glass of wine to go along with it, it really is a match to love.

Unless you know it’s there, you just might pass it by. But once you find Scratch Catering & Fine Foods, a small shop situated in the Hobby Lobby shopping center, you’ll be a regular. It’s become our go-to spot for grabbing a healthy dinner on weeknights when we’re short on time (or ingredients). The menu changes daily, so there’s always something fresh and new to look forward to, whether it’s grilled salmon or a warm bowl of homemade chili. The space is unassuming, but it’s brimming with hometown charm. There’s not a table or chair in the place; only a counter for ordering, a refrigerated case with beverages, and a chalkboard wall in the back announcing deals (“All drinks $1 all day every day”) and expressing sentiments (“Life’s short … eat dessert first”). Scratch Catering & Fine Foods (Scratch Kitchen for short), opened its doors last fall. The catering and carryout business is family-owned, which, to us, only adds to its appeal. Owner Ted Bilsky says that he and his family of Aggies have long been entrepreneurs – and pretty good around the kitchen. They catered for clients of Bilsky’s construction business for years and after many requests from happy customers, expanded into a full-time operation. “We focus on a few things we do well and keep the menu changing daily,” he says. “Everything is made from scratch – nothing out of a can or jar. It’s home-style cooking for families on the go.” Scratch Kitchen offers lunch and dinner takeout Monday through Friday. If you want to know what’s on the daily menu before you stop in, you can have text updates sent straight to your phone. The kitchen cranks out meals until 7 p.m. or until it runs out of food. The menu also changes quarterly, with pulled pork and brisket along with homemade sausage on the lineup for springtime. Scratch Kitchen’s best-loved meals are always in the rotation, though. Customers can’t get enough of the Chicken Marsala and Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf, Bilsky says. We opted for the Chicken Salad on Croissant for a light meal. It was sweet, creamy and crunchy with diced apples and walnuts, and the croissant was buttery and fresh. For dessert, we selected the S’mores Cupcake from Judy’s Bake Shop, its in-house bakery that offers fresh-made treats ranging from cupcakes to bars and cookies. The chocolate ganache was rich and decadent, and the toasted marshmallow frosting put this treat over the top. When all you want is a great home-style meal without the fuss of preparing it on your own, Scratch Kitchen has you covered. And while the bulk of the business is carryout, Bilsky notes that catering is still Scratch Kitchen’s forte. “Whether for a corporate gig or your kitchen table, we can do anything from the very simplistic to the very gourmet,” he says. But really, it’s all good, no matter how you serve it.

ourished and flourishing: Two words that can describe the people of Southlake and the city’s grocery scene, respectively. It’s hard to believe that a full year has gone by since we first detailed the differences of the specialty and natural foods grocers in the area. Sprouts, Whole Foods, Central Market, Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market have all thrived in the past year, despite the competition that comes from selling their products to a similar market. We appreciate what these grocers bring to the community, so we checked in on them to see what they’re up to now and what’s in store for shoppers this year. The City of Southlake is evolving in many ways—including its grocery scene. Longtime residents no doubt remember when Tom Thumb, Kroger and Albertson’s were

the neighborhood stores. Those were the days of shopping with a long list and filling your cart with a week’s worth of groceries. Times have changed, though. Albertson’s closed and Central Market came along with its upscale feel, gourmet offerings, in-store café and humongous parking lot. Then came Trader Joe’s, The Fresh Market and Whole Foods, each ushering in its own unique take on grocery shopping. Rather than stocking up with a full cart of food, shoppers can pop into one of the many area grocers for that organic artichoke pasta or Chanterelle mushrooms for dinner. Wherever you fall on the grocery-shopping spectrum—if you like loading up once a week Costco-style or you prefer zipping in and out of a specialty grocer for a quick item or two—you have a bounty of options.

Trader Joeis: Southlake

revisited

How Business Has Been: While Trader Joe’s declined to talk specifics (Alison Mochizuki, Director of Public Relations, says the store doesn’t discuss its business practices or sales), the Southlake community has embraced the arrival of this purveyor of novelty eats. Every time we stop in, the place is abuzz with foodies searching for that niche-y find. The Facebook page, Trader’s Joe’s Fan, has more than half a million likes. And one man is so passionate to bring Trader Joe’s products to Canada (there are no stores there), that he trucks items across the border and sells them in his own shop, Pirate Joe’s. Talk about a fan base.

Central Market Southlake

revisited

How Business Has Been: “Business continues to be strong at Central Market in Southlake,” says Paul Harty, General Manager. “Our store just celebrated its ninth anniversary. The growth and vibrancy that continues in the Southlake community has definitely added to our success. We have an extremely loyal customer base, yet we continue to see new customers exploring our store on a daily basis.” Competitive Edge: Central Market focuses on a strong base of service-minded partners (employees), who are dedicated to promoting the store culture. “What makes the Central Market shopping experience different from others is our many approachable, engaging store partners who meet every customer wherever they are on their food journey,” says Harty. “Our partners are the cornerstone of the Central Market brand, and the relationships they develop with our customers continue to drive our success.”

Competitive Edge: Trader Joe’s is dedicated to providing high-quality, gourmet foods in a fun environment that can’t be found at other grocers. “Trader Joe’s considers itself the neighborhood grocery store,” says Mochizuki. “About 80 percent of what we sell is under our private label, which means it is free of artificial flavors, synthetic colors, preservatives and GMOs. We are thrilled to be a part of the Southlake neighborhood.” What’s New: Up to a dozen new items a week are introduced at Trader Joe’s to keep your palate satisfied. These can be anything under the delicious Trader Joe’s brand name, such as snacks, healthy food or desserts. It’s almost like going to a new store every time you walk in. One of our favorite new items to hit the freezer is the Trader Jacques Tarte à l’Oignon (Alsatian-Style Onion Tarte). It’s rich and buttery, like something you’d find at the finest French bakery.

What’s New: Many shopping events are planned for Central Market in 2016. This month the store will announce which country it will celebrate for its seventh annual Passport event, which starts the last week of April and goes through the first week of May. This annual event brings many worldrenowned chefs, winemakers, products and dishes directly from the chosen country to the store, so you have the chance to try exotic food right here in town. Sprouts Farmer is Market — Southlake

revisited

How Business Has Been: “People in Southlake have really taken to Sprout’s unique approach of healthy living for less,” says Diego Romero, a spokesperson for the grocer. “We’ve had a great year and have exceeded the forecasts. It’s true that people are more concerned about the quality of food they consume and share with their family. Sprouts has become a regular shopping destination for the area, and we see that trend continuing in 2016, especially when local roadwork is complete.” Sprouts has plans to indeed sprout; it hopes to grow from its current 216 stores to 1,200 stores in 15 years. This would make it three times as big as Whole Foods, which currently has more than 400 stores, according to MarketRealist.com. Competitive Edge: Sprouts offers a wide selection of fresh, natural and organic foods at great prices, which helps it stand out from the rest. “We lead with produce and our shoppers recognize unbeatable prices by coming back week after week,” says Romero. “In addition to low prices, Sprouts offers an extensive amount of Sprouts-brand products, which meet strict quality standards. We also continue to add Non-GMO Project Verified and USDA Certified Organic products.” What’s New: Sprouts Vitamin and Body Care Extravaganza. Consider this your chance to load up on supplements and natural body-care items at discounted prices.

Whole Foods Market Colleyville

revisited

How Business Has Been: “Business has definitely been good for us in the past year,” says Bryan Baumann, Team Leader for the Colleyville store. “We are right on track with what they have been projecting for us, so we are very excited about that.” While it’s good news that our local store is faring well, the company as a whole didn’t have a stellar year last year. Shares of Whole Foods’ stock declined nearly 40 percent, according to CNBC, and the retailer is cutting its staff by 1.6 percent in an effort to lower prices and better compete in the industry. Competitive Edge: Whole Foods Market has eco-friendly standards for ingredients and products to provide shoppers with the freshest and most natural food. “Quality is our number one concern in every single thing that we offer at Whole Foods,” says Baumann. “Our strict policies on what we allow and don’t allow to be sold in our stores differentiates us from the rest. Everything in our store has to meet a certain standard before it can be put on the shelves, which means customers only get the highest quality foods available. Purchasing our products also means that you our supporting local growers, vendors and artisans.” What’s New: The Colleyville store hosts five or more events per month to get the community involved. These events are a fun way to bond while trying products offered at Whole Foods. For example, Friday Pint Nights is an opportunity to sample beer from different breweries, and Kids Club Storytime is a chance for little ones to hear a story, make a craft and eat a snack. These events vary by month.

The Fresh Market Southlake

revisited

How Business Has Been: “We opened in Southlake last January because we knew it was a market where shoppers have a passion for great food,” says Katie Georges, Marketing Manager at The Fresh Market. “We look forward to continuing to serve the Southlake community with our unique shopping experience.” While we’re glad The Fresh Market opened its doors in Southlake, the company’s overall outlook isn’t particularly rosy. It reported a 33-percent slide in profit in the third quarter of last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Competitive Edge: The Fresh Market is dedicated to creating an intimate shopping experience unlike other industrialized grocery stores. “We have a distinctive concept that sets us apart from other food retailers,” says Georges. “With our smaller footprint, shoppers can enjoy the convenience of being able to navigate our store quickly. And, the atmosphere of our stores is unique. With soft lighting and classical music, shopping for food is a wonderful, pleasant experience. Whether you are coming in for a few items or a full shopping list, we strive to make your shopping experience enjoyable and convenient.” What’s New: Every Thursday of each month, The Fresh Market offers convenient, grab-and-go solutions for preparing a home-cooked meal as part of its Little Big Meal program. You can whip up a delicious dinner for your family by purchasing handpicked ingredients here. It’s just as convenient as going through a drive-thru line—and definitely healthier.

outhlake Town Hall. Sixteen years ago, the Southlake Women’s Club started Art in the Square as a way to raise funds for the community and showcase renowned and emerging artists. Collecting more than $2 million in donations along the way, the event has obviously been a huge success, one that the community looks forward to each year. (And, by the way, it’s been ranked as the No. 8 arts festival in the U.S. according to ArtsFair Sourcebook.) Though the festival won’t happen ’til April, The Strokes of Art in the Square kicks off the celebration with an event featuring visual arts, music, food and wine. Art in the Square is a juried art competition, meaning that the more than 150 featured artists have been carefully selected from among the many hundreds of applicants. At this kick-off event, the public will have the opportunity to view some of these featured artists and cast their votes for the coveted 2016 People’s Choice winner. Last year, Austin artist David Bjurstrom took home the prize with his drawing entitled “Windmill.” It’s easy to see why: Looking at the highly intricate graphic pencil drawing of a windmill, it’s hard to tell that it is a drawing and not a photograph. Since last year was his first year at the festival, Bjurstrom says winning the People’s Choice Award made him feel welcomed in the community. And this year, as a result, his work will be featured on the commemorative t-shirts. The Strokes of Art in the Square event is co-sponsored by the Southlake Arts Council, Art in the Square/Southlake Women’s Club and Apex Arts League, a charitable organization that promotes art, artists and art education in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Are you ready to embrace the arts? We sure are.

Instead, it’ll be at the House of Blues, when Lynch—who was named one of People Country’s Sexiest Men, by the way—takes the stage to sing such hits as “Cowboys and Angels,” “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and, of course, “Where It’s At.”

O

n one hand, hitting the links around town at your favorite club allows you to master a familiar 18-hole course, which is sure to impress the occasional golf buddy joining you. But as with any sport, it can become more about the challenge than the win. We’ve rounded up a list of four ultimate golf resorts known for their amazing course layouts, challenging water hazards and beautiful scenic backdrops. Each of the resorts has a wow factor—something unique to write home about that may or may not involve your scorecard.

Mother Nature’s Course With four 18-hole courses onsite, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort offers variable course layouts and a variety of scenic backdrops. However, while Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old MacDonald may be the main golfing attractions at the Bandon, Oregon, resort, owner Mike Keiser wants to do more than provide golfers with the ultimate experience; he wants to create a resort “where nature is embraced, not conquered.” Focused on making sure the natural habitats of flora and fauna are not disturbed, Keiser had something unique in mind when he developed Bandon Preserve, a 13-hole, par-3 course. All net profits from the green fees for the preserve go directly to Wild Rivers Coast Alliance (WRCA). Keiser founded WRCA in 2010 to fund grants supporting conservation, community and economy on the southern Oregon coast.

The Bandon Dunes course opened in 1999. Designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd, the course sits on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean. The course is completely natural, giving golfers a unique experience each time as they conquer the ever-changing layout of the dunes and surrounding vegetation. The other three courses, the preserve, the Punchbowl (a 100,000-square-foot putting course), and a 50-acre practice center round out the rest of what Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has to offer.

Luxury Golf As an overnight guest of the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, you’ll have full access to the Cape Cod National Golf Club, a championship, 6,954-yard, par-72 course. Lead architect Brian Silva of design firm Cornish, Silva and Mungeam, made sure to use the natural landscape of the Cape in course design. Each of the 18 golf holes has four sets of tees, allowing players of all levels to enjoy the gently rolling hills and bordering cranberry bogs. Come for the golf, and stay for the luxury. The Wequassett Resort features 120 guest rooms and suites. Take your pick from junior suites, waterside or water view rooms, or book the round cove suite—there’s only one on the entire property for a true one-of-a-kind stay. When you get hungry, there are four restaurants onsite, each with its own atmosphere and flavor. From four-star dining at Twenty-Eight Atlantic to casual cuisine at Outer Bar & Grille, the resort has your taste buds covered.

Championship Courses Mayakoba, a master-planned resort community located 40 miles south of Cancún near Playa del Carmen in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, is home to El Camaleón, an 18-hole golf course designed by PGA icon Greg Norman. With mangrove-lined fairways, the course offers a unique scenic backdrop for the OHL Classic. In 2007, this contest became the first PGA TOUR event held outside of the United States and Canada, and still remains Mexico’s only PGA TOUR event. The Fairmont Mayakoba resort is situated within the 240 acres of tropical forest that comprises the Mayakoba master-planned community that includes the course. The Fairmont resort offers 401 rooms and suites, with most of them having private entrances and spastyle bathrooms. The furnished balconies or terraces allow guests to take in the tropical forest sights and sounds. Fairmont Mayakoba has partnered with chef and restaurateur Richard Sandoval to redesign the tastes and atmospheres of each of the four restaurants, Lobby Lounge, El Puerto, Brisas and La Laguna, located at the resort.

Across the Atlantic If you’re the type of golf enthusiast who travels the world in search of the perfect course, plan your next round at the K Club Golf Resort. The Kildare Hotel, Spa & Country Club, located in Kildare, Ireland, is located on 550 acres of picturesque countryside. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the two courses—The Palmer Ryder Cup Course and The Smurfit Course—offer golfers 36 of the most exciting and dramatic holes. These courses were designed with top-level players in mind. Located 30 minutes from Dublin, sitting along the banks of the River Liffey, the original French Château style house that was to become the K Club Hotel in 1991, dates back to 1832. The presentday hotel has retained many of the original antiques and artworks of the home, and has used these pieces to uniquely design each guest room, of which no two are alike. A long day of golf may have you seeking a bit of relaxation. AMAZING ALASKA NATURALIST BRENT NIXON SHARES WHAT’S IN STORE ON THIS SUMMER’S ALASKAN CRUISE. This July, Southlake Style is setting sail on the adventure of a lifetime – Expedition Alaska: Seas the Day. Brent Nixon, one of the cruise industry’s top naturalists, will be on board the Celebrity Solstice for the journey. We caught up with Nixon to get his take on Alaska and a first look at the experiences that await. Q: You’re the CEO of Nature Talks … are you listening? Tell us a little about your background and organization. A: I created the nonprofit Adventures In Nature in 1996 and found a high demand for my personal style of presentations. I decided to create a for-profit branch called Nature Talks…are you listening? Nature Talks is an opportunity for me to give voice to some of the issues in our natural world via dramatic illustrated talks. Since the creation of Nature Talks in 2006, I have done presentations for over one million people. Q: You travel all over the world. Where do you call home? A: I call two places home. Where I am hanging my hat during any given month of field research or wildlife filming is my “working” home. Cashmere, Washington, is where I spend my days taking care of my two beautiful daughters, Emma and Jessie. Q: What do you enjoy most about what you do? A: I love the environment the cruise industry creates for guests. Within that relaxed, opulent world, people tend to be a little more open to seeing the world with a bit more excitement and interest. I am proud to be a part of that grand cruise experience and always hope that my presentations and narratives help create a grander memory for guests. Q: What’s something about you that might surprise people? A: I am a pretty quiet person when I am not presenting. Most people know me through the passion they meet via one of my presentations or narratives and are often surprised at how mellow I am when I am not speaking about something I love. Q: Can you give us a sneak peek at what you’ll be sharing with us on Expedition Alaska: Seas the Day? A: The humpback whale activity in Southeast Alaska has hit epic levels, and I have some awesome film footage we just shot in 2015 that I think guests will love. I also just finished some filming of coastal brown bears for a NatGeo assignment that I think they will find totally edge-of-seat worthy. Throw in some great Coastal Bald Eagle film footage, some phenomenal Orca information and a hyper-animated show about seals and sea lions, and the week will be golden.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Q: Is there a common question you get from people when you’re on the ship? A: When will I see whales and bears? My response: Come to my shows and you will find out! Q: What do you hope people take away from your shows? A: My hope is that each guest will come away with a renewed passion for the gifts that are all around us here on earth. With that renewed passion, I hope will come a desire to care about what we are leaving for our children to enjoy and be passionate about. Q: Give us an idea of the type of wildlife we may see on the cruise. A: We will have several different opportunities to see lots of humpback whales, bald eagles and a huge variety of sea birds. If we are lucky, at least one or two American Black Bear, and if we are really lucky, a Coastal Brown Bear (known elsewhere as a grizzly). Salmon everywhere, and for those who go looking via shore excursions, possibly moose, wolf and a cool animal known as a Pine Martin. Hoary marmots, mountain goats and porpoise are also frequently seen. Q: What do you personally find most fascinating about Alaska? A: The constant and wonderful changes that unfold before me. It is not a static museum. Global change is very real in Alaska regardless of your political views. To me, that is real science and I am enthralled with it. Q: What would you say to someone who’s never been to Alaska? A: Come with open eyes and an open heart. Leave your expectations at home and let this amazing place create lasting memories. Q: Anything else you’d like to say? A: Alaska is not a notch in the travel belt that you can visit once and say you have seen Alaska. I have been exploring Alaska for over 35 years and still feel like a newcomer each time I return. Don’t let a single trip be Alaska’s only chance to impress you.
