Last year our phones collectively buzzed with concern from friends and family across the country as Southlake was amongst the national news on more than one occasion. In typical Texan fashion, we overcame challenges ranging from historic deep freezes and school board meetings to the early departure of our first-ever five-star quarterback. However, we ended 2021 on several high notes, including the grand openings of Carroll ISD’s fine arts complex and the Westin Dallas Southlake hotel, while the city was named “the best suburb for city-like living” in the entire country. Even Ken Goodman’s fledgling CISD barbecue team, The Cookfellas, made it to state in their very first competitive cook-off. There’s no doubt Southlake has momentum and we’re hitting the ground running in 2022! If you’re ready to tackle the new year with gusto, read on as we share the best local gyms for your fitness personality and eating tips from area health and wellness experts. When you’re ready to celebrate, we have an inside look at an exciting new wine bar in Trophy Club. Speaking of running, I completed The Hoover Dam Half Marathon just a few weeks ago. I find running to be a fun and relaxing way to stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors. So too does Kelly Richards, the former president of the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers club, who has completed marathons all over the globe. You’ll be inspired to lace up yourself after reading our installment of “Ask A... Runner.” Local businesses are in the running too — nominations for our third annual Readers’ Choice kick off this month. Support your favorites by nominating them today at SouthlakeStyle.com.

RUNNER

MARATHONS TOOK THIS GRAPEVINE RUNNER ACROSS THE WORLD

ask A. . kelly richards

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START RUNNING? I started running on July 4, 1997. I was just sitting on the couch, reading about the new WNBA and all of these incredible women athletes and the sacrifices they made. I felt inspired to get in better shape, so I just got up for a run and never really looked back. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RUN LIKE? The first time I went for a run, I walked one block and ran for one block. It was exhausting and lungburstingly hard, but it was also exhilarating. My first couple of runs were like 2 miles in 12-13 minutes. Slowly but surely, I built up my endurance and increased my speed and distance over time. HOW OFTEN DO YOU RUN? I run anywhere between 6-14 miles five days every week. I’ll go running in parks, long-distance hikes, pretty challenging mountainous routes — anywhere my feet can take me. WHEN DID YOU START RACING IN MARATHONS? My first marathon was the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis in October ‘98. I was scared yet really focused, and it went great. But the second one I felt much more confident because I had already done it before, and it was surprisingly difficult. I fell in love with running after my third marathon. WHAT IS THE LONGEST ROUTE YOU’VE EVER RUN? The most miles I’ve ever ran in a day was at the Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 2009. I ran 56 miles that day in 10 hours and 21 minutes. I pushed myself further than I had ever gone before. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO BEGINNING RUNNERS? Find a club or a friend to run with. It’s more fun with others and they keep you accountable. They won’t let you sleep in or decide you're too tired and won’t flake on you if it’s blazing hot or cold and rainy. They encourage you to keep going no matter what. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT RUNNING? Running has taken me not just to all 50 states, but across the world. I’ve run marathons in Cambodia, Ireland and Germany. I’ve run across sand dunes, streams and beaches. Getting to see all of these beautiful places by foot is amazing. My greatest experiences have all come from running.

Ozark’s End

A

ll decisions have consequences. In this Primetime Emmy Award-winning Netflix saga, “Ozark” shows a family’s money laundering scheme embedded deep within the Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. After five years and three pulse-pounding seasons, the fourth and final season of “Ozark” will premiere on Jan. 21. No matter what you were expecting, you won’t be ready. Created by showrunners Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, who penned action thrillers such as “The Accountant,” “Honest Thief” and “Copshop,” “Ozark” follows Marty Bryde, played by Jason Bateman in a drastic dramatic detour from his comedic days on “Arrested Development.” With co-stars Laura Linney, Julia Garner and Janet McTeer, “Ozark” brings the Bryde family face to face with many unsavory characters. This series finale will have the Bryde family face their greatest challenges yet. One way or another, the Brydes’ criminal empire ends here. But “Ozark” isn’t the only high-stakes drama coming to your TV this month. “Billions” returns to Showtime for its sixth season, and Fox sees a revival of Miranda Kwok’s “The Cleaning Lady.” “The Gilded Age” comes alive in HBO’s historical epic, and Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs return for the third season of “Snowpiercer.” Plus Hillary Duff returns to TV as part of Hulu’s newest reboot, “How I Met Your Father.” Hopefully she’s not referring to Barney Stinson.

NEW YEAR, SAME WORKOUT CELEBRATE YOUR FITNESS PERSONALITY AT THESE LOCAL GYMS

L

BY LIZZY SPANGLER

ast year, half of U.S. adults said exercising more was their New Year’s resolution for 2021, according to a YouGovAmerica survey. Thanks to the pandemic, a lot of that exercising took place in garages, guest rooms and neighborhood sidewalks. Many are ready to venture away from home, give the Peloton a break and embrace their gym-going routine. The good news is that Southlake is full of a wide variety of gyms and fitness groups that cater to hardcore gym rats, born-again athletes and even the not-sosweaty socialites. Whether you love low-impact workouts, are a frequent gymgoer or are a bit of an exercise newbie, here are some groups and places to celebrate your workout style and rock your fitness goals for 2022.

20 • JAN 22

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

If you get tired of doing the same workout over and over again, switch up your routine with F45 Training or Champions Club, two gyms that help every workout feel different. “We do offer a wide variety of different programs and ways to engage with fitness,” says Jake Coldren, Champions Club’s fitness and performance supervisor. “We have a wide variety of equipment, from our cardio section to our aquatic center, our weightlifting room as well as our isolated resistance machines.” Meanwhile, at F45 Training, every day brings a new type of workout to its patrons. Mondays and Fridays feature hybrid classes with a focus on cardio, while Tuesdays and Thursdays feature strength-focused classes alternating between working out the upper and lower body. Wednesday features straight cardio classes, while Sunday classes feature hybrid classes with a focus on strength training. “That’s one of the things I love about F45 is that it’s something different every day. You really don’t have the opportunity to get bored with the classes or the workouts,” F45 Training owner Susan Brown says. “It’s also really great for your body because it’s something different, and your body doesn’t really have the opportunity to get used to something or hit a plateau.” State-of-the-art equipment is available at both gyms, with Champions Club patrons able to use equipment like StairMaster machines, rowers and spin bikes while F45 patrons have a bevy of dumbbells and weight training equipment at their disposal. So whether you’re an exercise newbie or a seasoned gymgoer, take comfort in knowing both of these gyms won’t leave you bored. “We work very closely with our patrons on the facility to make sure that we’re giving them everything possible to have the best experience,” Jake says. “We want them to not only enjoy it while they’re here but also rave about it when they leave here.”

Working out is hard, but working out with a newborn or toddler is even harder. That’s where Fit4Mom comes in. “A lot of people are intimidated, especially if they just had a baby,” Fit4Mom KellerSouthlake owner Bethany Gregory says. Inspired by her own journey with motherhood, Bethany purchased the Fit4Mom Keller-Southlake franchise 11 years ago. “Once I had my baby, I wanted to get back in shape [and] I wanted to meet other moms,” Bethany says. “I went to the Stroller Strides class that they offered in Grapevine and I immediately fell in love with the concept.” Fit4Mom’s classes include Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre, which incorporate strollers into cardio and barre workouts that kids can ride along with. With outdoor classes around town at Bicentennial Park, North Park and Bear Creek Park, the franchise caters to moms of all fitness levels. “You can make it literally as easy or as challenging as you want it to be,” Bethany says. “I have moms who are pregnant. I have moms that have just had a baby. I have moms who had babies years ago, and they come to class every single day.” One of the best perks of Fit4Mom is the opportunity to meet and hang out with fellow moms in the area. “There’s something magical that happens when you bring moms together,” Bethany says. “We call it a village, which is a super cheesy name, but it feels that way. It’s a safe zone. A mom can nurse in the middle of class. Change a diaper. If she forgot wipes, I promise you somebody else has them. So they come for the workout and stay for the friendships.” Whether your baby is on the way, just walking, learning to drive or having babies of their own, Fit4Mom can help you along your fitness journey.

For The Low-Impact Lover SPENGA

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Sometimes the worst part about exercising is the physical impact it can have on the body, whether it’s overworked muscles, sore joints or overall achiness. If you value a low-impact workout that still delivers the results you’re looking for, SPENGA Southlake is where it’s at. A class at SPENGA is an hour long and features 20 minutes of three different types of workouts: spin, strength and yoga, with modifications always offered. “The 20 minutes in spin is to heat up your body, get a great cardio burn and then move on to the strength,” SPENGA Southlake manager and instructor Tonya Prather says. When it comes to the strength portion of a class, patrons can expect a little variety. “It’s a total body workout every day,” Tonya says. “Some days we emphasize more on shoulders, back, core and legs, so there may be different focuses some days, but it’s certainly total body each day. And it can be a combination of all different types of equipment.” And when all the movement and sweating is done, yoga is the cherry on top that ends a workout session. “We make sure we stretch you nicely to give yourself a full balance to your workout and give people the opportunity to relax the muscles we’ve been working so hard,” Tonya says. So if your knees groan at the thought of running or your body aches from doing burpees or squat jumps, ditch the high-intensity exercises and spring for a well-rounded workout that doesn’t kill your joints.

If you got your introduction to parkour from Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute and Andy Bernard from “The Office,” you’re not alone. But while the trio’s take on the workout is mostly goofy, Tempest Freerunning Academy is serious about spreading the word about parkour and freerunning. “Parkour is all about getting from point A to point B as efficiently as possible,” Tempest Freerunning Academy manager Billy Branch says. “Freerunning is the same type of movements but with more stylistic flips and tricks involved.” With hour-long classes following a set curriculum, patrons can learn everything they need to in order to move up a skill level in 10 weeks. “Martial arts gyms have belts… at our gym, we have bands that you wear on your wrist that say what level you are,” Billy says. “And just like a martial arts gym, we have testings every so often.” In the gym, there are structures built to look like the outside world — the LA skyline, a parking garage and rooftop air ducts, to name a few. Tempest also has a springboard floor, a giant airbag that looks like a pool and two trampolines — one that is Olympicsized and one that is, the bounciest trampoline you can buy in the U.S., according to Billy. “I’ve had people jump on it and touch the ceiling of this place,” Billy says. “There’s a lot in this gym, and because we have all these blocks we can move around, you can always build something new.” Whether you’re a risk-taker or want to try a new and exciting kind of cardio workout, Tempest Freerunning Academy provides the thrills to keep you motivated. “I’ve never seen a class end without everyone looking like they had a great time. Everyone’s smiling, everyone’s laughing, patting each other on the back,” Billy says. “There’s this beautiful sort of community we have here where people really enjoy movement and enjoy doing it together in a group.”

TODD DODGE RETIRES AFTER 7TH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP In his last game before retirement, former Southlake Carroll football coach Todd Dodge won his seventh overall state championship and third straight with the Austin Westlake Chaparrals after defeating the Denton Guyer Wildcats 40-21. The game capped off a career that spanned 23 years, according to TexasHighSchoolFootballHistory.com. During his time in Southlake, coach Dodge had four undefeated championship seasons, with a 79-1 record between 2002-06 and 98-11 overall record. Coach Dodge was also named Southlake's 2006 Citizen of the Year. After brief stints at the University of North Texas and Marble Falls, he joined Austin Westlake in 2014. In last year's state championship game, he went head-tohead with his son Riley, the Dragons' current head coach, in the much-anticipated Dodge Bowl and won his sixth state championship 52-34.

SOUTHLAKE CARROLL CELEBRATES MELISSA PAGE’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY Melissa Page celebrated 25 years with Carroll ISD as the Emerald Belles’ director on Dec. 19. Gathering at the fine arts complex at Carroll Senior High School, the Emerald Belles recognized Melissa with a surprise party celebrating her milestone. Not only was she awarded recognitions from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Reps. Giovanni Capriglione and Beth Van Duyne and Texas State Senator Kelly Hancock, but Southlake Mayor John Huffman also proclaimed Dec. 19 as Melissa Page Day. “I truly am so overwhelmed,” Melissa says. “I love Southlake. I love this community. It’s just such a special place, and it has been for so many years.” HAILEY HERNANDEZ HEADED TO FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Former Dragon diver Hailey Hernandez qualified for the FINA World Championships during the 2021 USA Diving Winter Nationals last month. DRAGON BARBECUE TEAM HEADED TO STATE One of Carroll ISD's barbecue teams is headed to state this summer. On Dec. 3, the Cookfellas competed at the regional qualifier competition in Gilmer, Texas. Consisting of students Alfred Hale, Cade Austin, Luke Fulkerson, Richard Cismas, Cami O’Neill and Hannah Ingle, the team competed across five different categories — New York strip steaks, hamburgers, chicken thighs, pork spare ribs and dessert. By the end of the competition, the barbecue team was named reserve champions, finishing first for steak, chicken and desserts, second for burgers and fourth for ribs. The Carroll barbecue team's next competition is set for Feb. 4-5 in Lufkin, Texas, while the state competition is set for May 7 in Burnet, Texas. If the team finishes in the top 10 at state, it will qualify for nationals on June 19-22 in Round Rock, Texas.

CISD WATER POLO PROGRAM BEGINNING IN 2022 At its Dec. 13 meeting, the Carroll ISD board of trustees unanimously approved adding a water polo program to Carroll Athletics during the 2022-23 school year. The sport, which was added to the University Interscholastic League’s constitution and contest rules as a pilot program, will begin its first season on Aug. 1 and end around Oct. 28. There will be a varsity and junior varsity team for both the boys and girls, with a head coach overseeing both programs that will be hired sometime in April or May. A survey about the water polo program will be sent out to the community sometime in the next two months.

DRAGON SOPHOMORE DESIGNS NEW TROMBONE SLIDE One Carroll Dragon came up with a creative solution to fixing his trombone slide inside the new STEAM Center. During the Carroll Dragon Band’s journey to state, sophomore Alex Charlton performed alongside his band, marching on the field and playing his trombone. But throughout the semester, Alex’s slide accrued dents on it due to bumping into objects throughout the season. Several nights and 20 hours of computer-aided design later, Alex 3D-modeled and printed a brand new trombone slide in Kevlar. Alex says the slide works very well and he hopes to continue using it in marching band competitions next year. “It’s about the same weight, if not a little lighter,” he says. “I am at a point now where it is hard to come up with improvements to my design. I am proud of how my slide turned out.”

BOB JONES NATURE CENTER COMMENCES BARN RAISING The Bob Jones Nature Center barn saw new beginnings last month. On Dec. 11, the community came together to begin the first steps to constructing a new barn for the preserve. Families gathered and played yard games, enjoyed hay rides and interacted with animals at the petting zoo while city staff laid down the foundation for the new barn. “This is a unique opportunity to preserve a very special part of Southlake history,” Southlake Mayor John Huffman says. “It’s important to make sure we have special places like Bob Jones for future generations because that’s what it is. It’s an investment into our future and our kids’ futures.” Construction is expected to begin in August or September for a December 2022 completion. CITY OF SOUTHLAKE WINS ACHIEVEMENT FOR PLANNING EXCELLENCE The city of Southlake was awarded the 2021 Certificate of Achievement for Planning Excellence from the American Planning Association Texas chapter last month. The certificate recognizes the dedication and support from the city council, planning and zoning commission and city staff for upholding the city’s professional planning standards. The city scored well above the 100-point threshold to receive the recognition, with the criteria including the level of training received by planning commissioners and staff, professional qualifications of the planning staff, formulating and updating master plan components and completing planning-related projects. This marks the 17th consecutive year Southlake has received the award, with 33 other city municipalities receiving the award alongside Southlake this year.

Coach Leonard received his win after the boys’ state championship-winning season. Coach Leonard previously won the award in 2020 in both the boys and girls categories. “It’s an honor to be recognized as the 6A Coach of the Year,” coach Leonard says. “It’s an award I get because of how the boys run and practice each day. NORTH TEXAS DANCE ARTS ACADEMY OPENS IN ROANOKE A new dance academy opened in Roanoke last month that aims to stress the importance of health and self-care. Founded by Emily Hunter and Rachel Wade, the North Texas Dance Arts Academy is a new daytime dance studio that offers first-rate dance instruction to students K-12. Emily says that in the world of dance, some young dancers self-sacrifice in their pursuit of success and create harmful habits in the process. But with the North Texas Dance Arts Academy, Emily hopes to change that mindset and inspire kids to focus on their mental and emotional health as much as their technique. “We want our students to love learning, love dance and love themselves,” Emily says. North Texas Dance Arts Academy is open now at 1212 N. U.S. 377, Suite 105 in Roanoke. ANDERSON DISTILLERY & GRILL OPENING IN ROANOKE A new microdistillery will bring in the New Year in Roanoke. hether you stick to the trails or go off-road, bike riding is an enjoyable pastime that allows you to catch breezes and scenic views at the same time. That is, until your first incline screeches your bike ride to a halt as you arduously pedal uphill. The RadRover 6 Plus can give your ride the electric boost it needs to reach new speeds and heights. Designed with both comfort and convenience in mind, the RadRover 6 Plus is built with an ergonomic frame that ensures a smooth and seamless ride regardless of whether you pedal or hit the throttle. Its thick, durable tires are puncture-resistant to rough and jagged sur-

faces, while its 60-millimeter suspension allows you to take over any terrain. And the hydraulic disc brakes provide superb stopping power, giving you complete control over your bike and ride. But the crown jewel of this electric bike is the 48-volt lithium-ion battery, which can power your bike up to 45 miles per charge. The semi-integrated battery blends seamlessly into the down tube and is simple to pop in and out with its LED display. And its 750-watt gear motor lets you switch between seven different pedal speeds, with the top gears reaching up to 25 miles per hour. No matter where you want to ride, the RadRover 6 Plus can help get you there in style, comfort and record time.

nine SMART & SUCCESSFUL EATING STRATEGIES

BY DAVID DUNN

LOCAL EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON HOW TO APPROACH NUTRITION

O

lympian Heather Mitts, “Tenet” star John David Washington and the Real Housewives of Orange County all have one thing in common — their diet was carefully crafted by celebrity chef Alexander Fioroni. Through his work as The Nutrition Chef, Fioroni has put his 20-plus years of experience to good use helping Southlake-area residents realize their health goals. But he isn’t the only nutritional expert in the area — New Way Nutrition dietician Ann Swanson and Dr. Sue Williams have been in Southlake and Grapevine just as long, and they’ve been equally committed to helping people adopt healthier eating habits every day. As everybody turns to a new year, these nutritional experts have a few pieces of advice to bring positive change into people’s lives, one meal at a time.

STAY HYDRATED

one

Before you even get to what food to consume, you actually have to start with what liquids you put into your body. Chef Alex says the average person should drink around eight glasses of water every day. “A lot of the time we think we’re hungry, but our body is actually really thirsty,” chef Alex says. “When someone drinks a good amount of water and waits 1020 minutes, 99% of them aren’t hungry anymore. When you drink water to satiate, soothe and hydrate your body, you tend to make different decisions.”

two

EAT SMALLER AND MORE OFTEN

Many times when people begin new eating habits, they have a misconception that you have to consume less. Chef Alex says otherwise. For his clients, he recommends eating 5-7 smaller meals every 2-3 hours per day. Even if they’re eating food that’s outside of their diet during a cheat day, eating smaller amounts of food more frequently helps your digestive tract process and break down food easier. “When a baby is born, they’re eating 2-3 hours because that’s how their body works,” chef Alex says. “Our bodies are the same way. The only reason we change our schedule is because work and school usually gets in the way of that rhythm.” Chef Alex says people can lose half a pound a week just by eating differently — and that doesn’t even include working out. “For a recommended 1,300-2,000 calorie diet, I would suggest that people break up their meals between 250-500 calories,” chef Alex says. “Your mini-meals should be about half the calories as your main meals.”

three MORE MEAT AND FAT

3

When it comes to meat consumption, chef Alex recommends a hearty amount of chicken and fish for most people’s diets. But that doesn’t mean you have to cut beef entirely out of your life. Leaner cuts like flank, sirloin and strip steak can fulfill your carnivorous cravings while still maintaining your regular nutrition. But protein is only half of the equation. Chef Alex says that fat found in high-quality sources like olive oil, avocados and eggs are also essential when it comes to your food consumption. “Fat is so good for the body, but it has to come from the right kind of fat,” chef Alex says. “That’s why raw nuts are so good for you, because they’re high in good fats, fiber and protein.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Eating is not cheating. Changing too much, too fast is one of the biggest barriers to making long-term, sustainable changes. — Ann Swanson New Way Nutrition Dietician

four

ORGANIC ALTERNATIVES

When it comes to adopting new habits, most nutritionists recommend going organic when planning and preparing meals. Ann says you should always focus on the quality of food first. “Foods full of nutrients and low in added preservatives and chemicals are your best choice,” Ann says. “When you learn how foods or individual nutrients work for your unique needs, it is less tempting to eat those things that work against you.” However it doesn’t mean you’re stuck with eating only salads and quinoa. Local grocers like Sprouts, Central Market and Trader Joe’s offer a wide selection of organic products along their aisles, while pizza places like Taverna Rossa and Delucca Gaucho Pizza & Wine can cut even more carbs with their cauliflower crusts. And even though HG Sply Co.’s dairy-free vegan queso is made with cashew and coconut milk, the flavor is all there. JAN 22 • 49

five

CONSUME THE CARBS

Some people think that they need to eliminate carbohydrates to be healthier, but chef Alex says that isn’t the case. “Carbohydrates are what gives us energy,” chef Alex says. “Our brain alone needs about 30 grams of carbohydrates just to function for one hour. It’s not the lack of carbohydrates, but rather the source of carbohydrates that you’re using. Some of the carbohydrates that people are eating on a daily basis are just the wrong kinds of carbohydrates.” Small changes like replacing white rice with cauliflower rice or regular potatoes with sweet potatoes can leave a larger impact on your body. And replacing potato chips with carrot chips and ice cream with Greek yogurt can make even larger dents in your belt size.

six

6

USE NATURAL SWEETENERS

But meat and carbs aren’t the only calorie culprits — sweets can also potentially pull people away from their New Year's resolutions. Thankfully, there are ways to work around your sweet tooth by using natural sweeteners for your desserts. DessertsRx Organic Cafe is one local shop that only uses clean ingredients for its offerings. From its brownies and fudge to noCheesecake Jars, all of DessertsRx’s products are naturally sweetened with blue spirulina and Lakanto monk fruit sweetener. And when it comes to Dr. Sue’s chocolate in Grapevine, she sweetens her treats with dried fruit and organic honey. “When you enjoy something that’s rich, sweet and decadent, make sure you’re choosing something real and natural, something that you’re going to feel good about eating,” Dr. Sue says. “The closer we can stay to natural sweeteners, the easier your body will be able to process and utilize nutrition.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

7

THE DARK SIDE OF CHOCOLATE

There’s a reason why Dr. Sue focuses specifically on dark chocolate at her shop. Not only does it have the least sugar and fat amongst the rest of chocolates — it also contains the highest percentage of cacao beans, making it the healthiest option among most chocolate offerings. “[It’s] extremely high in antioxidants,” Dr. Sue says. “It’s got that big, rich flavor that’s more satisfying to the palate, and it’s going to give you that intrinsic richness that stays with you longer.”

eight ELIMINATE THE ALCOHOL

8

One of the worst things you can do to your body during your weight loss journey is consuming alcohol, chef Alex says. Regardless of whether it’s a bottle of beer or a glass of wine, alcohol can have a bigger impact on your health than even sugar or carbohydrates. “Alcohol kills all of the vitamins that someone puts into their body,” chef Alex says. “It puts so much stress on your liver, and your liver is already struggling because of the extra fat in your body. Your body ends up attacking itself because you’re forcing it to process something it isn’t meant to.” Thankfully, there are some fun substitutes available that will give you a similar taste without the detrimental effects of alcohol. Brands like Nonsecco and Lyre’s provide the same taste and finish of sparkling wine and malt liquor, and several non-alcoholic beer brands are also available in Athletic Brewing Co., Lagunitas and Heineken. “At the end of the day, it’s more of a social experience than anything else,” chef Alex says. “We all love to socialize and grab a drink with each other. You don’t have to choose between one and the other.”

nine

ENJOY YOUR FOOD

However you approach your meal planning, one thing that nutritionists emphasize the most is to enjoy what you’re eating. Chef Alex says weight loss isn’t just about the food you eat — it’s about the psychology behind it as well. “The big problem with food psychology is that people aren’t enjoying what they’re eating,” chef Alex says. “They’ll start off strong at first, but within six weeks, they will go back to their old habits if they’re not enjoying it.” Ann emphasizes that you shouldn’t feel bad about eating something you enjoy. “Eating is not cheating,” Ann says. “Changing too much, too fast is one of the biggest barriers to making long term, sustainable changes. I see greater success emphasizing what you are already doing well, focusing more on what you need to add rather than what you need to remove from your diet.” JAN 22 • 51

Elephant East Serves Up Delicious Southeastern Asian Flair

O

Elephant East 2850 N. Harwood St., Suite 120 Dallas 214.256.4151 ElephantEastDallas.com

pening last October inside the Harwood District, Elephant East is a new Pan-Asian concept bringing authentic Southeastern Asian flavors to the Metroplex. Led by executive chef Tom Griffin, the restaurant is fast becoming one of the hottest spots in town. “We knew that with the decor and with the service style that we wanted to go Pan-Southeastern Asian with it,” Tom says. The 2,450-square-foot restaurant is open for drinks and dinner every Wednesday through Sunday, with reservations fast filling up daily. Guests who arrive right when it opens at 4 p.m. can enjoy a happy hour of epic proportions, with Elephant East’s drink menu featuring eight handcrafted cocktails.

The Margarita Of The East is one of the most popular beverages, with its Exotico blanco tequila complemented by Cointreau, ginger lime agave and candied ginger. The Lychee Martini, meanwhile, is a lychee-infused sake made with Roku gin, peach-infused vodka, lime and luxardo cherries. Elephant East even has its own take on an old-fashioned, with its Asian Spiced Old Fashioned made with Harwood Maker’s Mark, EE bitters and house-spiced peach honey syrup. Beer drinkers can expand their palates by trying one of four foreign beers on Elephant East’s menu, including Lucky Buddha, Sapporo, Tiger Beer and Kirin Ichiban. The restaurant also showcases a variety of different sakes like the Shirakabe Gura Mio and the Duku Junmai, and wines such as the Cloudfall Pinot Noir and

the Mohua Sauvignon Blanc, with everything available by both the glass or bottle. When it comes to Elephant East’s food selections, guests have a bevy of options to choose from. With five different sections on its dinner menu, the restaurant ensures that it can cater to any diner. “We always want to spark curiosity [with] our menus and have people try as many dishes as they can,” Tom says. The cold plates section of the menu features light, delicious options like the steak salad, which features Texas wagyu, pear, grapes, red cabbage, honey daikon, cilantro and tamarind vinaigrette. Meanwhile, the Seoul Style Carpaccio comes with Texas wagyu, black garlic, tobiko aioli, chili crisps, fried shallots, mint, cured yolk and bao crostini. But if you prefer to start off the night with a hot meal, Elephant East provides that in spades. The cured bone-in crispy pork spare ribs are served with apple char siu sauce, sesame and scallions, while the baos feature pork belly, cucumber, pickled shallots and apple char siu. And if you’re feeling indecisive, the Pu Pu Platter features a bit of everything, including crispy pork spare ribs, nems, chicken satay, fresh rolls and bang bang shrimp. As far as main courses go, the banana leaf cod, served with yuzu marinade, carrots, coconut green curry, white rice and a papaya and herb salad, provides a burst of flavor with every bite. Meat aficionados will enjoy digging into the Texas wagyu tri-tip, served with spicy long beans, daikon fries and housemade hoisin sauce on the side, or the Korean short rib, which showcases galbi-braised short ribs, sticky rice, kimchi, sesame and apple demi. It would be a mistake to go to Elephant East and not try its noodles and rice. Guests can personalize the pad thai or the house fried rice by adding chicken, pork or shrimp. The Drunken Noodles features a filet alongside flat noodles, bell peppers, red onions, snap peas, lime, drunken sauce and basil, while the Singapore Noodles are made with egg noodles, Chinese sausage, Napa cabbage, snow peas and yellow curry. And Elephant East’s dessert menu is definitely not to be missed. The Chinese donuts feature red sugar and five-spice anglaise, while the bubble waffle sundae molds Bindi chocolate gelato into the shape of a bear with chocolate truffles, peanuts, caramelized milk, whipped cream, Pocky sticks and sprinkles. Meanwhile, chefs select and prepare different flavors of mochi regularly. “The inspiration truly comes from family and friends,” Tom says. “That’s what the restaurant is all about. It’s about great service, sparking some curiosity with the food and the drinks and still feeling like it’s relatable to Texas.” With a menu full of delicious Southeast Asian-inspired dishes, Elephant East will leave you wanting more and already planning your next visit. “I want [guests] to leave full,” Tom says. “I want them to leave excited to come back and try another round of dishes.”

Lovely Libations

Leela’s Wine Bar Serves Fresh Drinks And Tapas In Trophy Club Libations, light bites and lovely times. You can find all of this and more at Leela’s Wine Bar, which opened in Trophy Club last fall. Originating from Lower Greenville in Dallas, Leela’s Wine Bar is a neighborhood bar that serves craft cocktails, tapas and wine on tap inside a beautiful and relaxing environment. With the wine bar connecting to its sister concept HG Sply Co., marketing manager Katie Clapp says the space specifically caters to those looking to unwind after a long day. “Trophy Club was an easy pick for us in deciding where to lay the groundwork for our concept,” Katie says. “We were drawn to creating a space where anyone can come eat, drink and enjoy wine in a fun and friendly environment.” Guests who walk in are immediately swept up by Leela’s open and beautiful design, with glimmering emerald tiles, sparkling chandeliers and greenery lining the entire space. When they sit down at the wine bar, they’ll see an extensive menu filled with meats, cheeses and hors d’oeuvres perfect for some light snacking without filling you up. Leela’s sourdough or gluten-free toast is served with a topping of smoked salmon, avocado, pimento or Boursin cheese, while its charcuterie boards can be customized to your liking with crostinis, crackers and 10 different meat and cheese selections. It also offers high-grade appetizers like wagyu beef carpaccio, made with frisee, pecorino and crispy shallots, and mussels complemented with white wine, butter and garlic. Of course, most people come for the wine, and its bar offers 28 different red, white, rose and sparkling wine varieties to sample. Its cocktail menu offers additional options such as the Polar Espresso, made with Van Gogh double espresso vodka, Mr. Black coffee liquor, cream and cinnamon, or the Tipsy Cider, which combined caramel-infused vodka with apple cider syrup and lemon for a bubbly finish. “Leela’s offers wine on tap, which curves the waste that wine bottles have on the environment,” Katie says. “Each wine keg used is stainless steel and reusable, therefore zeroing out waste.” So tip your glass and make a toast. Whether you swing by for a date night, a girls’ night out or for an after-work glass of wine, fresh flavors and good times await you at Leela’s Wine Bar.

New In Koreatown Nuri Grill Delivers An Upscale, Asian-inspired Steakhouse Experience

A new Asian-inspired steakhouse is delivering sizzling, savory flavors in the heart of Dallas’ Koreatown. Created by Smoothie King CEO Wan Kim, Nuri Grill offers high-quality cocktails, cuisine and barbecue in an intimate and upscale setting. “No expense has been spared for Nuri and our guest experience,” Wan says via press release. “Since moving to Dallas in 2018, I’ve wanted to bring a unique dining experience to the city but also provide an approachable menu for those who may not be familiar with Korean [and] Asian-inspired finer dining destinations.” Led by husband-and-wife chef duo Minji Kim and Ben Lee, Nuri Grill incorporates Korean ingredients into familiar dishes, having something for every diner that walks through its doors. “We are sourcing incredibly high-quality ingredients but also keeping our price points very reasonable so we can entertain guests willing to drive from all over the Metroplex,” Minji says via press release. Nuri Grill has Asian-inspired libations that help start the night off like the Matcha Mai Tai, made with Kuleana Huihui Light Hawaiian Rum, Kasama-aged Filipino Rum, lime, pineapple, almond orgeat and matcha powder. The EastTX Old Fashioned is another favorite that is prepared with Shibui Japanese Whiskey, Balcones Pot Still Bourbon and Sichuan bitters. The steakhouse also serves up a variety of sakes such as the Kamoizumi Nigori “Summer Snow” and the Otokoyama Kitano Inaho Daiginjo “Jewel of the North” and tea selections including Earl Grey, Jasmine, Egyptian Chamomile and Sencha. Shareables like the crab fritters and the crispy pork belly help build up your appetite, but the fun really begins when you come to the main course. Interactive grills are fired up at every table so guests can grill whichever protein they desire. Steak lovers will salivate at the chateaubriand or prime New York strip, while lighter dishes include the marinated steak salad and the Seoul Farm, a Korean quinoa bowl with mushroom, sesame seed and gochujang. And if you love ending the meal with something sweet, Nuri Grill offers two options in Earl Grey Creme Brulee and yogurt ice cream. Whether it’s for a date night or an evening catching up with friends, you won’t regret dining out at Nuri Grill. “Ben and I are thrilled to get back into the kitchen and bring a taste of our hometown and culture to Dallas diners,” Minji says via press release. F

This Colleyville Trainer Helps Others Reach Their Fitness Goals In Person And Online

itness has been a part of Tracy McGarry’s life for as long as she can remember. As the driving force behind the Rise Up coaching app, Tracy’s world revolves around hard work, effort and helping others reach their personal goals. But more than that, Tracy’s fitness approach emphasizes that health is just as much in the mind as it is in the body. As she continues in-person coaching in Southlake and virtual coaching throughout the nation, Tracy is committed to reminding people that perfection is the aspiration, not an expectation. I HAVE BEEN ACTIVE… all of my life. I grew up cheerleading, swimming and playing softball, soccer and basketball. My family was really sports-oriented. My dad would coach our teams while my mom would travel with us to games. It was a family thing for us. THROUGH SPORTS, I LEARNED… the discipline and mental toughness you need to stick with something and reach a goal. Your skill level didn’t have to be great, but if you worked hard enough, you could get to wherever you wanted to go. The longer you continue on a journey, the better you get. WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL… I had an eating disorder. I had this idea in my head that I needed to have the perfect body, and I starved myself for it. I spent six weeks in the hospital. When I got out, I quit my unhealthy behaviors, but I still had an unhealthy relationship with food. That stayed with me throughout most of my adult life. I GRADUATED WITH… a degree in social work and a teaching certificate. I taught aerobics, boot camp, strength and conditioning camps for female high school athletes. As I’ve grown and worked on my mindset, my health journey became more about getting stronger, fueling my body, fixing my relationship with food and finding that balance. I STARTED COACHING… because people in my life helped me overcome my own struggles. If there’s something we conquer, we have a responsibility to teach others and show them we did it. Helping people reach their health and fitness goals kind of feels like my way of giving back. I OPENED MY OWN PRACTICE… in January 2019. I provide in-person, virtual and nutrition coaching. I’ve always been a motivator, and I love physical fitness and leading people to succeed and making a difference in their lives.

64 • JAN 22

LAST YEAR… I launched a private Facebook group for anybody in the area while we were locked down during the pandemic. Everybody needed help and a sense of community, so I started the group and did a five-day challenge to help everyone get back on track through movement, exercise and eating healthy. It grew to have over 600 women in the group. I realized that I could help more people online, so I launched the Rise Up coaching app the same year and reached clients from all over the country. MY MAJOR PILLARS ARE… mindset, education, fitness and nutrition. It’s about breaking the negative internal dialogue that keeps people from getting the results that they want. I try to teach nutrition in a way that isn’t a quick fix, a fad or a list of do’s and don’ts, but rather teach people that it’s okay to not always be perfect and not always fit the lifestyle. You don’t have to beat yourself up over having a cookie or a piece of pie with the family. It’s about having more self-empowerment and self-confidence. THE MOST UNIQUE ASPECT OF MY PRACTICE IS… the mindset work. I think that’s what keeps most people from reaching their goals. Most women don’t like how they look. Most women want to lose weight but don’t know how. It’s usually because we’re in our own way. When you deal with the mindset along with the nutrition and fitness, it sticks and becomes a lifestyle. THE CLIENTS THAT HAVE MEANT THE MOST TO ME… are the ones that say they didn’t think they could do it, but now they know they can, and they feel better about themselves. Whether it’s through personalized coaching or teaching online, I’m trying to break the stereotype women have that they need to work really, really hard and do a lot of cardio and strict dieting to be the best version of themselves. I’m trying to break those myths and simplify health and fitness for everyone.

The Letter That Changed It All

The Musical Theater Sensation ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Comes To Bass Hall

lose your eyes and imagine you’re back in high school. You have social anxiety. You have bullies and hardly any friends. You have a crush on an unattainable girl. Your arm is in a cast. The only thing you have control of are the letters your therapist recommends you write to yourself. But one letter (and the lies it contains) accidentally gets into the wrong hands and tragedy ensues, changing your life forever. This is how Evan Hansen feels. “Dear Evan Hansen” is a six-time Tony Award-winning musical, winning Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Orchestrations, Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role. Actor Ben Platt originally made the role famous in 2016, and now the show is going on a tour all across North America to tell audiences a story that “The Washington Post” calls “one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history.” With the book written by Tony Award-winner Steven Levenson and the score written by Grammy-, Tony- and Academy

home STYLE Going Green

E

very year, designers hold their collective breaths waiting for paint companies like Behr, Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to announce their color of the year. While each company chose different colors last year from bright teal to dark gray, the companies have a unified vision for 2022, with each company selecting different hues of green. Whether you go for the refreshing tone of mint or the rough and dark shades of earthy green, here’s how you can embrace more green in your home for the new year.

EVERGREEN FOG

An earthier green with gray undertones, SherwinWilliams' color of the year is SW 9130, or Evergreen Fog. Thanks to its greige aesthetic, Evergreen Fog’s appearance is heavily influenced by your home’s lighting, with the green shades popping out more the brighter it is. Its subtle and simple nature can complement nearly any color, although it pairs best with shades of white, brown and gold. You can slowly incorporate this natural hue into your home with some DIY wall art, or you can go all-in by painting your dressers or bookshelves with this color.

OCTOBER MIST

On the lighter side of the spectrum, Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is October Mist. More of a silvery green, October Mist No. 1495 is perfect for those who love nature, embrace all things cottagecore or just want to bring a bit of the wild into their home. This color makes for a great accent wall and is more complementary to pastels and darker colors. With its range, October Mist can ingratiate itself anywhere into your home without much fuss.

BREEZEWAY

Behr’s color of the year, Breezeway, is the most different of the three. A light, minty green, Breezeway — or MQ3-21 — brings the soft color into your home in a subtle and beautiful way. You can invite this color into your home by giving your front door a face-lift or by totally redoing your kitchen cabinets in a bold, refreshing style. This color pairs nicely with shades of white, gray and brown, so if your home features those hues, you’re already halfway there to reinvigorating your space.

noes National Park and traverse Nāhuku. Otherwise known as the Thurston Lava Tube, Nāhuku is a hiking trail that winds through the rainforest, eventually entering a 600-foot-long lava tube where a river of lava once flowed that was 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The 500-year-old lava tube was first discovered in 1913 and is home to entire ecosystems of creatures like crickets, spiders and microbes. Hikers can choose to walk a 1.5-mile or 6-mile round-trip trail to traverse Nāhuku. Whether you trek the cavernous channel early in the morning or late afternoon, you’ll be grateful you took the time to explore the natural wonders of Nāhuku.

Navajo Loop Trail | Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

One of the most iconic hikes in Utah is the Navajo Loop Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park. This trail is known for having the most hoodoo sedimentary rock spires in the world, with some of them even shaping into striking red rock formations like Wall Street, Twin Bridges and Thor’s Hammer. Hikers who trek this 1.4-mile route will enjoy gazing at the colorful limestone walls or the abundant Douglas fir trees that can be found in higher elevations along the trail. But if you do venture out to this trail, make sure to check the weather report beforehand. Portions of the trail can close due to rainy or wintery conditions, but the view is more than worth it if you go on a sunny day.

Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail | Acadia National Park, Maine

Along the Atlantic coast of Maine sits the Acadia National Park, where the Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail is a must-visit. This rocky trail with granite slopes and stairs leads to the highest point in the park and along the Eastern Seaboard while providing picturesque views of Maine’s Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay and the Schoodic Peninsula. The trail is also filled with hundreds of songbirds, woodpeckers and waterfowls, making it a great place to add some birdwatching to your hike. Enhance your experience of this 4.4-mile round-trip trail by traversing right after sunrise or shortly before sunset. That way, you can see the sky burst into bright colors as you take in all of the natural beauty that Cadillac Mountain has to offer.

Mist Trail | Yosemite National Park, California

One of America’s most popular national parks, Yosemite in California offers a beautiful and rewarding hike with its Mist Trail. This moderately difficult trail for experienced hikers reaches 2,000 feet in elevation at its highest point and features views of the Nevada and Vernal Falls. The Mist Trail has several routes you can take to hike it, whether you trek the 2.4-mile route to the top of Vernal Fall, the more challenging 5.4-mile hike to Nevada Fall or spend a whole day reaching the top of both waterfalls. Whichever path you choose, bring plenty of supplies and water to see you through your expedition. After all, a day along the Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park is one well spent.
