Every summer has a soundtrack—those songs that play in the background of all your sun-filled memories. The season itself is kind of like a Pandora playlist; you can finetune it exactly how you’d like. If you’re looking for a few places to amp up your usual routine, check out “Live Music on the Menu.” These local destinations combine live music and dining for the ultimate entertainment combo. Bring the family or make it an adults-exclusive outing—we highlight picks for both. This issue’s Arts & Culture department is chockfull of ideas to customize your month. Sink your teeth into summer’s sweetest bounty at a peach festival or experience the magic of pixies and pirates at an evening at the opera, among a dozen other ideas. I’m particularly excited about the “Mom’s Night Out” tour coming to the Majestic Theatre this month. Comedians Jen Smedley and Kristin Hensley mine motherhood for material and consistently come up with comedic gold. Whatever events are your jam, though, you certainly have options. Just see Nos. 6, 7 and 10 in our list of “10 Truths About Living in Southlake.” And because summer is a time to soak up the sun, we spend “Five Minutes With” Jason Tamblyn. This marathoner has logged more than 90,000 miles and competed in iconic races such as the Boston Marathon. Now, he’s helping local runners find their stride at Bob Jones Nature Center. Discover what drives him and then embark on one of his Saturday-morning trail runs. A month of outdoor time, laughter and live music? I like the sound of that.

local picks “INTO THIN AIR” | JOHN KRAKAUER A book that will hopefully prove beneficial to readers and runners is “Into Thin Air.” The relevance is the struggle of men and women trying to overcome nature in all its beauty and fury, and the price some people will pay to test themselves—to stand on the highest point on this Earth, Mount Everest, and in some cases, as this book depicts, pay the ultimate price—losing your life. It is the struggle to reach new personal heights, but at what cost? And ultimately are these personal heights/goals worth the risk? Only deep within each of us can we each make this very personal decision. Jason Tamblyn, two-time cancer survivor, distance runner and this month’s Q&A

But have you ever wondered why those apples went bad? “Because You Love to Hate Me” retells 13 classic tales with a twist—from the villain’s point of view. This flipping of the script will tickle readers’ intrigue with a fresh new perspective on their favorite stories as reimagined by 13 bestselling authors and BookTubers.

WHILE SOUTHLAKE RESIDENTS CAN CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE PROXIMITY TO TWO OF TEXAS’ MAJOR METRO AREAS (DALLAS IS TEXAS’ THIRD-LARGEST CITY AND FORT WORTH IS THE FIFTH-LARGEST, ACCORDING TO USA TODAY), PEOPLE IN SOUTHLAKE DON’T LIKE GETTING LUMPED IN WITH THE REST OF THE METROPLEX. SOUTHLAKE SIMPLY STANDS APART. WHEN YOU LIVE HERE, YOU GET THE CHARM OF A SMALL TOWN (COMMUNITY PEP RALLIES AND FESTIVALS GALORE, FOR EXAMPLE) WITH THE PERKS OF A BIG CITY (HIGH-END RETAIL AND RESTAURANTS, AND HECK, EVEN A TESLA GALLERY OPENING SOON). SOUTHLAKE MIGHT EVEN GET ITS OWN TROLLEY SYSTEM. CITY LEADERS ARE DETERMINING THE FEASIBILITY OF ADDING TROLLEYS, WHICH WOULD BE FUNDED WITH THE SEVEN-PERCENT HOTEL OCCUPANCY TAX. ACCORDING TO SOUTHLAKE MAYOR LAURA HILL, A TROLLEY SYSTEM WOULD HELP IMPROVE DRIVING CONDITIONS FOR RESIDENTS WHILE CREATING A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS. “A

T H E D RAG O N isn’t J U ST A M AS COT ; it’s A WAY of L I F E .

If you’re new to Southlake, it won’t take you long to see that here, everyone is a Dragon, from pre-K to the senior class and beyond. Once a Dragon, always a Dragon. There aren’t different mascots for different schools—we’re all members of Dragon Nation. And because everyone is united by #DragonPride, there’s a certain kind of culture here that just doesn’t exist elsewhere. Here’s how Carroll ISD superintendent Dr. David Faltys describes it: “Being a Dragon is truly something special. It’s not just wearing a Dragon hat or shirt, or having the logo on your car or locker. It goes much deeper than that. It has to do with your heart, mind and spirit. It’s about protecting a tradition that has endured for decades.”

LIVING IN SOUTHLAKE COMES WITH A CERTAIN LEVEL OF SCRUTINY FROM OTHER CITIES. THERE’S A SIBLING RIVALRY OF SORTS BETWEEN DALLAS AND FORT WORTH, BUT WHEN YOU LIVE IN SOUTHLAKE, RIVALRIES GET RATCHETED UP TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. IT SEEMS EVERY OTHER TEXAS TOWN HAS ITS EYE ON SOUTHLAKE—ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO ATHLETICS. APPARENTLY, OUR DRAGON PRIDE BOTHERS SOME PEOPLE. When you live in our town, celebrity sightings are bound to happen. DeMarcus Ware, Cole Hamels, Jermaine O’Neal and Jason Witten are just a few of the pro athletes who have called Southlake home. Though they could live anywhere, many A-listers and CEOs proudly reside in Southlake. Over the years, Southlake Style has spotlighted a dozen or so stars in our pages and on our cover. And they all agree: It doesn’t get better than living in Southlake. Newly retired DeMarcus Ware says, “I like the camaraderie. It’s a great community.” 16 • JUL 17

Between Bicentennial Park, Bob Jones Nature Center and the Southlake Public Library, it’s easy to make the most of a Saturday with your kids. However, if you’re looking for a vibrant late-night scene for your next date night, all is generally quiet in the bubble. REMEMBER

Sure, Southlake residents are like most Texans—we pile on the winter gear and complain when the temperature dips below 40. But we secretly know we have it better than most of the country. Southlake averages 233 sunny days a year with average January temperatures of 34, according to Sperling’s BestPlaces. Plus, our city averages zero inches of snowfall annually while the average U.S. city gets 26 inches a year. Living in a no-snow zone is perfectly okay with locals. STEP BACK IN TIME AT SOUTHLAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S SUMMER EXHIBIT The Southlake Historical Society’s upcoming exhibit, “Shared Stories: Denton County, Southlake and the Wild West, 1840-1878,” tells the history of Denton County and Southlake through the eyes of the larger-than-life characters and everyday people who lived it. The exhibit runs from July 7 through August 28 in the lobby of Town Hall. Stop by to view artifacts from Texas Rangers, cowhands and area pioneers. “The way to learn and enjoy history is through stories,” said Connie Cooley, president of the Southlake Historical Society. “We hope our exhibit engages everyone who sees it and that it fires up their interest in history.” CARROLL ANNOUNCED GREEN JACKETS FOR UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR At the Carroll Senior High School graduation, the newest class of Green Jackets was revealed. Eight boys and eight girls from a highly competitive group of over 200 eligible nominations were selected based on teacher recommendation and essay. CARROLL EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDED $10,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO DRAGON SENIORS Carroll Education Foundation (CEF) awarded $10,000 in scholarships to Dragon seniors at a special ceremony at Carroll Senior High School. Nearly 60 Carroll seniors applied for scholarships this year. Ten students received $1,000 scholarships based upon a blind review of six application areas: academic, extracurricular, volunteer, employment, essay and teacher/community recommendations. This year, CEF created two new program-based scholarships—Fine Arts and Special Programs—to create more diversity in the applicant pool. CEF’s event title sponsor, Park Place Lexus - Grapevine, presented these awards. Additionally, the newest memorial scholarship honored Cole Malone, a former Dragon. The Cole Malone Memorial Scholarship rewards a student for his or her commitment to leadership in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math. Visit SouthlakeStyle. com to see the Class of 2017 CEF scholarship recipients. SOUTHLAKE CITY COUNCILMAN GARY FAWKS RESIGNED In a letter to Mayor Laura Hill and the rest of the City Council, Councilmember Gary Fawks (Place 6) shared that he received a promotion at work, preventing him from being sworn in for a second term. Councilman Fawks leaves a long legacy of public service with Southlake. He was first elected to the City Council in 1996 and served until 2001. He was named Mayor Pro Tem in 1998. He also served on the Southlake Parks and Development Corporation, the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Southlake/Carroll ISD Joint Use Committee. At press time, Christopher Archer, Carroll ISD board president, is the only applicant to replace Fawks.

DRAGON BASEBALL FINISHED SPECTACULAR SEASON AT STATE SEMIFINALS Dragon Baseball earned a state tournament berth for the first time since 2008, but the Dragons fell short at Dell Diamond last month. The team suffered heartbreak in the state semifinal, falling 3-2 to eventual state champion Deer Park. Despite beginning the season with only three players with varsity experience, the Dragons overcame this with a consistent offensive lineup, strong pitching and defense. Four starters and two of Carroll’s top three pitchers return next year. SOUTHLAKE INSURANCE AGENCY WON AWARD FOR PHILANTHROPY Southlake-based CavnarSmith Insurance Agency earned a 2017 Safeco Insurance® Make More Happen Award for demonstrating extraordinary volunteerism to make positive change happen in the community. The award included $5,000 to use towards its community work with Metroport Meals On Wheels. “Safeco’s Make More Happen program recognizes agents who are committed to making a difference in their local communities, and we want encourage them to directly support the local charities where they see the most need,” said LeTesha Wheeler, Safeco Insurance Central Region territory manager. RES MUSIC TEACHER RETIRES AFTER 39 YEARS IN EDUCATION In May, the Dragon community gathered at White’s Chapel UMC to sing the praises of Josie Smith. The beloved Rockenbaugh Elementary music teacher retired after 39 years in education to spend more time with her grandchildren. Smith’s current and former students, RESPECT choir members, parents, friends and colleagues gathered at a special open house to celebrate her career. Southlake Style asked Smith to reflect back on her career and share what she’s excited about in the next chapter of her life. See our Q&A at SouthlakeStyle.com.

At Advanced Vein Care, the philosophy isn’t just treatment, but restoration. Whether it’s function, comfort or appearance, Dr. Philip Moore strives to help patients move toward improvement with an emphasis on options. When patients seek to understand the treatment, Dr. Moore reassures them that only abnormal veins are removed because they’re not functioning properly. The veins treated at Advanced Vein Care are technically superficial; the staff preserves and protects the important deeper system. Dr. Moore is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and he is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. His specialties include radio-frequency catheter ablation as an alternative to stripping surgery for treatment of underlying vein reflux. Pete Bulban at Texas Cars Direct.

TEXAS CARS DIRECT First-quality Mercedes-Benz luxury for $1,000 over cost

I

n 1981, Dallas native Pete Bulban started selling cars in Dallas in a way that nobody had seen before. Bulban rented a small warehouse, loaded it up with pre-owned luxury vehicles, and began selling the vehicles at a discount inside the no-frills warehouse. It broke the mold in the way cars were sold at the time. Bulban’s warehouse auto dealership concept was born, and 36 years later, car buyers continue to flock to where it all started—Texas Cars Direct in North Dallas.

Hundreds of Highly Sought-After Mercedes-Benz in Stock Texas Cars Direct sells only superior-quality, pre-owned Mercedes-Benz vehicles, most of which are late models coming off lease, and some have less than 1,000 miles. Texas Cars Direct has access to purchasing personal company cars of Mercedes-Benz executives. When MercedesBenz vehicles are returned from lease, they are consolidated from across the country and sold at just a few select auction sites across America. Texas Cars Direct secures the cream of the crop in luxury pre-owned Mercedes-Benz vehicles because Bulban has earned access into these elite auto auctions. Bulban handpicks the super-premium vehicles he sells at Texas Cars Direct and keeps the warehouse dealership stocked with a large inventory of 150 to 250+ premium vehicles.

28 • JUL 17

Texas Cars Direct ranks as one of the nation’s top wholesale purchasers of pre-owned MercedesBenz from Mercedes-Benz Credit Corporation, and in a 14-year span, the business was the No. 1 volume seller of pre-owned Jaguars in the United States. Not only is the selection tremendous, the prices of the luxury imports are almost always the lowest to be found. Texas Cars Direct sells for a fair and reasonable $1,000 profit on each car and keeps overhead low. “I don’t mind our customers knowing what we make on a sale, because we are and have always been transparent in our pricing,” says Bulban. “We don’t have coffee bars, cafes or big-screen TVs here, and that’s just the way our customers like it. Customers want selection, quality and the lowest price, and that’s what they find at Texas Cars Direct.”

Low Pressure, Stress Free Texas Cars Direct offers the ultimate in a lowpressure, no-stress car-buying experience. All vehicles are priced as marked with no negotiation needed. There is no sales staff and no commission. Customers are welcomed at the door with a price and inventory list, and they’re

encouraged to spend as much time as they please in the warehouse. Bulban says that Texas Cars Direct has hundreds of repeat customers, many of whom have been buying cars here for over 30 years. Plus, many of these customers refer friends and relatives to Bulban, which he says is the greatest compliment to his business. The Dallas Morning News business columnist Cheryl Hall profiled Bulban and Texas Cars Direct recently. In her column, Hall reported, “Every month, about a dozen customers fly in to Texas Cars Direct and drive a car home. Most come from other Texas cities and Oklahoma City. Once, a customer flew all the way from Ghana to buy a Mercedes S Class that he uses for a limousine.” Jenny Bulban, Pete’s wife, also works at Texas Cars Direct handling operations and getting the vehicles from auction to the sales floor. The Bulbans give much of the credit to the success of the dealership to their dedicated staff. Of the 15 team members at Texas Cars Direct, over half has been with the company for about 10 years and four have 15+ years at TCD. The skill and knowledge of the staff allows Texas Cars Direct to operate with precision in moving the sales process along quickly. This is a big selling point and trademark of Texas Cars Direct. Most

Customers want selection, quality and the lowest price on a MercedesBenz, and that's what they find at Texas Cars Direct. transactions take just 30 to 45 minutes thanks to a streamlined process. To buy a car at Texas Cars Direct, you don’t need to take a day off from work— your lunch hour will do! Julie Todd of Arlington found just the Mercedes-Benz she was looking for at Texas Cars Direct. Late model, low mileage and priced right. “By far, the best car buying experience I’ve ever had. The price listed truly is the price you pay. The dreaded back-and-forth haggling at other dealerships doesn’t exist at Texas Cars Direct. And the staff is so knowledgeable about the vehicles; they answered every question I had. It was a great experience. My family will be customers for life,” says Todd. For car shoppers looking for a superior-quality, late-model MercedesBenz, Texas Cars Direct will have a wide array of options to choose from in every price range. Currently, there are more than 175 prize, late-model Mercedes-Benz vehicles at Texas Cars Direct. See the complete inventory at TexasCarsDirect.com.

FERTILITY SPECIALISTS OF TEXAS Where the waiting ends and families begin

F

ertility Specialists of Texas (FST) is an infertility center that is dedicated to helping couples triumph over infertility, biological adversity, pain and heartache in order to grow their families. Founded by Dr. Jerald S. Goldstein in 2005, FST has grown from a small, one-physician practice to a global infertility center with three locations in Frisco, Dallas and Southlake. The newest location, at 540 E. Southlake Boulevard, offers in-office intrauterine insemination (IUI), semen analysis and HSGs (hysterosalpingogram), among other treatment options. FST is nationally recognized for its outstanding record of success in the treatment of infertility. The state-of-the-art in vitro fertilization (IVF) facility has repeatedly been recognized as one of the leading infertility centers and continually achieves some of the highest pregnancy and birth rates as demonstrated in the latest Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) statistics. The fertility experts at FST have combined years of experience with today’s latest scientific advancements and a complete mind-body approach to provide patients with the most effective, comprehensive treatment plan possible. The core of the practice is treating each patient with empathy and compassion. There is nothing more delicate or heartbreaking for couples who want to start a family than the inability to conceive. And, many FST team members know the ache and longing of infertility and draw upon those experiences to deliver effective care with sensitivity and understanding. Patients learn about FST through a physician referral, by researching the website (FertilityTexas.com), social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) and online reviews or from a friend or family member who conceived with the facility’s help. Patients-turned-parents are FST’s greatest advocates. Dr. Goldstein, Dr. Dorette Noorhasan, Dr. Rebecca Chilvers and Dr. Satin Patel are members of The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) and the Texas Medical Association.

(L-R): Carlos Guerrero, Ph.D.; Rebecca Chilvers, M.D.; Dorette Noorhasan, M.D.; Jerald S. Goldstein, M.D.; Satin Patel, M.D.

If you’re going out for dinner and drinks, why not add a little live music to the mix? The Metroplex is packed with a variety of places to liven up your usual night out. While these venues can certainly stand on their own for the bites or the beats, we think they’re better together. Here are a few of our favorite venues to dine, drink and/or dance the night away.

THIS PLACE IS THE BOMB THE BOMB FACTORY 2713 Canton Street, Dallas TheBombFactory.com The Bomb Factory is aptly named given its history. The building began as a Ford automobile manufacturing plant in the early 1900s and was repurposed during World War II to manufacture bombs and ammunition for American military installations. The original walls of the factory still stand; the rest of the facility underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation and features state-of-the-art sound and light technology. Situated in the heart of historic Deep Ellum in downtown Dallas, the 50,000-square-foot facility is now one of the trendiest Metroplex live music destinations. The venue has played host to a variety of musicians and bands ranging from Erykah Badu, The Lumineers and Ludacris. Dining at The Bomb Factory consists of a full menu by Barrister BBQ and a variety of onsite food trucks. You can also belly up to five full bars located throughout the venue. The dress code is anything goes, so wear that tank top and flip-flops, or get completely decked out. Some people even wear costumes in tribute to the band playing. The only dress code requirement is that costumes must not block the view of people behind or around you. Otherwise, get as wild and crazy as you want! The Bomb Factory is an all-ages club, but patrons under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 or over. Those age 16 and up are admitted without supervision, and all ages must purchase a ticket to attend concerts. When the show is over, you could Uber back home or stay at a local hotel such as the Omni or Hotel Indigo. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

THE FREE MAN CAJUN CAFÉ AND LOUNGE 2626 Commerce Street, Dallas FreeManDallas.com

THE GINGER MAN 1512 E. Southlake Boulevard TheGingerman.com/Southlake You don’t need to leave the bubble to experience an authentic pub atmosphere. The Ginger Man is just the place to kick back with a cold one and kick off your evening. The premium beer bar features more than 60 unique beers from around the world on tap plus about 75 in bottles. This summer, check out rotating seasonal beers including Dogfish Head Beer To Drink Music To ’17, Rahr & Son’s Summertime Wheat and Saint Arnold Summer Pils. If Belgian beer is your thing, don’t miss the pub’s annual Belgian tasting on July 15 in celebration of Belgian National Day. You can sample eight different beers perfectly paired with various menu items, which, at The Ginger Man, range from classic bar fare such as soft pretzels to upscale bites like the Bratwurst and Ale Onion Flatbread. The house favorite is the Beer Companion, a cheese and meat plate with hummus, fresh apples, toasted pita bread and French baguette slices. Every Saturday night, The Ginger Man is the place to be in Southlake for live music. The pub plays host to a variety of one-man acts and bands that play cover songs as well as original content. Get ready for hands-inthe-air-sing-along sessions—but just don’t spill your beer. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

If you’re hungry for some authentic Cajun cuisine along with fantastic live music, take a jaunt over to The Free Man Cajun Café in Dallas. The restaurant aims to provide great food, music and atmosphere to make it worth the trip every time. Whether you’re into jazz, swing or Dixieland music, The Free Man will get your toes tappin’ seven days a week from 7 to 10 p.m. If you prefer your set list filled with rock, alt rock, country, folk or hip-hop, check out the venue earlier in the day. The restaurant showcases a live mixture of these genres from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. A favorite among regulars is a group called The Free Loaders, a six-piece blues/ jazz/swing band fronted by The Free Man’s owner, John Jay Myers, who plays drums for the group. The house band plays every Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m., and about twice a month on weekends. There is never a cover charge, and the restaurant/soundstage is an all-ages venue until 10 p.m. There is no enforced dress code, so come as you are and check out the famous Free Man experience for yourself. THE FLYING SAUCER DRAUGHT EMPORIUM 111 E. 3rd Street, Fort Worth BeerKnurd.com There’s more than one Metroplex location of Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, but the Fort Worth location, situated in the ever-popular Sundance Square, happens to be our favorite. The taproom features a full pub menu and an impressive selection of 200 craft, draft, imported and domestic beers. Drink all 200 and you’ll be heralded as a Beerknurd, the emporium’s equivalent of a frequent diner, or in this case, drinker. You’ll get a “flying saucer” plaque on the wall with your name on it along with well-deserved bragging rights. We also like that there is always something exciting going on at the Flying Saucer. Take, for example, Tuesday Trivia, which occurs every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Two games are played back-toback, each with three rounds, with cash prizes for the winners. There are also chess matches (times of matches vary month to month, so check Flying Saucer’s website for details). As for the food, Flying Saucer serves everything from classic bar bites—hot wings, nachos, cheese fries and more—to gourmet pub fare, such as a housesmoked salmon sandwich and goat cheese salad. The Saucer’s most popular attraction, though, is the live music that plays Friday through Sunday year-round. Head to this Cowtown hotspot for some of the area’s best live music plus food and drinks that just keep flowing. Music genres vary by act, so check the online event calendar for the most current listing of performing bands. The Saucer admits all ages until 9 p.m. Cover charges vary by band, but the average cost is $5 per person. 38 • JUL 17

TAVERNA ROSSA 1151 E. Southlake Boulevard TavernaRossa.com Taverna Rossa is not your average pizza and beer joint, not by a long shot. Founders Preston Lancaster and Tony Smith grew up in the Metroplex and are proud of the unique and creative atmosphere they have created. The two entrepreneurs recognized the value in the pizza and beer tradition, but wanted to take it to a whole new level. The handmade, Italian-inspired dishes at Taverna Rossa are made with locally sourced ingredients, and the distinctive menu has been created in collaboration with Brian Luscher, a culinary consultant and the owner/head chef at The Grape in Dallas. One bite and you’ll be convinced: Taverna Rossa is onto something great when it comes to gourmet pizza. Pizza cannot stand alone, however; the beverage component must not be overlooked. At Taverna Rossa, it certainly has not been. In fact, the restaurant has taken beer to the next level with a remarkable craft beer selection. If a pint of cold suds is not what you had in mind, perhaps one of Taverna’s expertly mixed, one-of-a-kind cocktails will tempt you. You can also select a glass from the restaurant’s sensational wine list, which is sure to impress even the most discerning vino connoisseur. Once you have a slice and a cold one, settle in for some rockin’ live music. The restaurant features live bands every Friday and Saturday night. Whether you like to jam to blues, country or rock, there’s a band to suit every musical preference. When the founders partnered up for this adventure, they set out to create something spectacular, and it’s safe to say they have. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

DOCS “Greater than 90 percent of my surgical patients qualify for minimally invasive surgery.”

44 • JUL 17

O. David Taunton Jr., M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT? My passion is to help people improve their quality of life. My particular subspecialty, hip and knee replacement, has taken a lot of hard work, but it is all worth it when patients say, “Thank you for giving me my life back.” WHAT IS YOUR PRIMARY GOAL WHEN WORKING WITH PATIENTS? I offer comprehensive care to patients with simple and complex disorders of the hip and knee. There are many treatment options for patients with joint pain, deformity or injury. My goal is to return patients to the activities they love and restore their hip and knee function.

WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? My father is a physician and his advice when I started my profession was to do quality work. In addition to quality care, he advised me to not lose sight that patients are human beings and each should be given the respect and compassion they deserve.

Howard W. Harris, M.D. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? It is an honor to be recognized by my peers as one of the top orthopedic surgeons in North Texas. I strive daily to provide excellent care, and it is very rewarding to have that effort acknowledged by my fellow physicians. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I was born and raised in North Texas. I received my undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and then attended medical school at UT Southwestern Medical Center. From there, I completed an orthopedic surgery internship and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I obtained additional fellowship training at the internationally renowned American Sports Medicine Institute.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH PATIENTS? I particularly enjoy working with my shoulder patients, because shoulder injuries are present from youth athletics to the elderly, from laborers to executives, and they all have different expectations. I enjoy customizing the treatment to meet the individual patient’s needs.

DOCS Michael L. Nguyen, M.D. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION? I played high-level sports here in North Texas and eventually needed orthopedic surgeries because of injuries I sustained. I felt a large debt of gratitude toward the doctors who put me back together, so I thought it would be rewarding to be able to do the same to others. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I was born and raised in North Texas and graduated with highest honors from Baylor University. B. Todd Drury, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT? Dr. Drury considers it a privilege to care for people. Inspired by his grandfather, he started his career as a physical therapist and ultimately became an orthopedic hand surgeon. He realized very early that he enjoys the element of human interaction that occurs between a patient and a caregiver. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? One of my professors at Vanderbilt shared the following quote with me: “Remember that there is no condition known to man that can’t be made worse with an operation.” I’ve kept this in mind with every patient.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? There is an abundance of talented physicians in Southlake, so it’s a special honor to be recognized for doing good work by my medical peers. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? Dr. Drury chose hand and wrist surgery because he loves the complexity of how the hand interacts with our environment, and appreciates the precise nature of the surgeries required to address dysfunctions and injuries of the upper extremity.

Marybeth Crane, D.P.M. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT? My podiatrist made my first pair of custom orthotics and I’ve now been an avid runner for 37 years. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? Kimberly Marshall, M.D. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? I am really moved and honored to have my practice get such powerful recognition. As an OB-GYN, you really pour your heart and soul into caring for your patients, and to have that commitment recognized by your peers means a lot. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT? My passion started as a child. I was amazed how my mother could ease pain with just a hug and a kiss. In school I was drawn to medicine by the intellectually challenging problems of the human body and disease, especially since they varied so greatly from the defined and predictable problems of mechanical engineering.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I chose obstetrics and gynecology so I could deliver babies, perform surgical procedures and have lifelong patients—and I get to wear scrubs to work every day! WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH PATIENTS? I love learning about my patients lives. Dr. Rumalla feels privileged every day to be able to provide this level of service to his patients. WHAT ARE THE LATEST PROCEDURES OR NEW TECHNOLOGIES YOU ARE PROUD TO OFFER? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? It is such a privilege to practice medicine, and I never take it for granted.

ike any home feature, backyard pool designs evolve over time. Today’s sleek edges and clean lines create a minimalist look that effortlessly transitions from the surrounding deck and seating areas. The simple, sophisticated design trend proves you don’t need a lot of flash in your splash.

CLEAN AND CLEAR Particularly in Texas, yesterday’s pools tended to look as though they were carved from the hillside—even if the surrounding terrain was flat. Large boulders served as leaping ledges, and stacked stones often sputtered waterfalls from within. While these freeform designs certainly created an illusion of a natural swimming hole, the rough edges provided the perfect place to crack a chin or bonk a noggin. Plus, keeping all those rocks secure with mortar added a maintenance element and a slip hazard. Today’s clean edges—or even infinity edges—make the pool a backyard feature that complements the surrounding landscape without competing with it. Smooth decks and patios practically glide into the water’s surface and sightlines continue uninterrupted. Even sunning ledges seem to unceremoniously rise from the water with grace. HIGH-TECH LIGHTING Not only does the design of a pool installed today differ from one installed five to 10 years ago, technology has certainly made illuminating your backyard pool more sophisticated than ever. Popular features such as LightEmitting Diodes (LED) lights are not only en-

ergy efficient, bright and durable, but also come in a rainbow of color options. hen you think Southern food, classics such as crispy fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and buttermilk biscuits probably come to mind. Grayson Social, a farmhouse-chic eatery in downtown Dallas, embodies everything you love about Southern cooking—and then takes it up a notch. Executive Chef Rebecca Jolly describes Grayson Social as a place to find comfort and make memories. “It’s southern dining with a twist,” she says, “a social space for food, cocktails and friends.” In creating the unique menu, Chef Jolly draws her culinary inspiration from seeing guests enjoy their meals, taking photos of their plates and sometimes boldly asking for the recipe. “That is a gift in itself,” she adds.

You’ll definitely find biscuits on the menu, but Grayson Social’s version has earned the name Killer Biscuits for their heaping helping of butter and Texas boldness. Naturally, Killer Biscuits pair perfectly with the Country Fried Yard Bird, or try the Redfish with Saffron Jasmine Rice and Crawfish Étouffée. Duck Wings or Chicken-Fried Quail for starters? Yes, please! While some menu staples such as the Frisée & Gold Beet Salad and Jumbo Shrimp & Grits grace both the lunch and dinner menus, for Grayson Social, seasonality is the buzzword. Fresh herbs and produce— even at the bar—find their way into nearly every dish. “Our summer menu features fresh

Today, Jolly likes to return the tutelage, teaching new cooks to hone their skills as she works alongside them. But her greatest pleasure comes from making Grayson Social’s guests happy, along with developing new and interesting flavor combinations. We’d like to think her grandmother would be proud of Chef Jolly’s pairings of tender Root Vegetable Succotash and earthy Huitlacoche Purée with the Mushroom Dusted Bay of Fundy Salmon and her inventive Sweet Corn Hummus. And who wouldn’t be delighted to try the White Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding with Ancho Chile Caramel and Lavender Ice Cream? We can’t think of a better way to end a meal … until we spied the Nutella Mud Pie with Oreo Crust Cookies & Cream. Who says southern dining is for the faint of heart? If you have more restraint than we do— or you are on a special diet—you’ll find a bevy of salads and lighter fare to tickle your taste buds in a more responsible fashion. But we don’t blame you for planning your trip to Grayson Social to fall on your cheat day. Especially when you make a return visit. You’ll find the cozy, sundrenched dining experience at Grayson Social the perfect excuse to head to Dallas for a weekend brunch or a mid-week lunch date. Or come early for dinner any night of the week and sip a hand-crafted cocktail, such as a Lavender Julep or a Cucumber Gin Fizz, as the refreshing start to a night out. If you have friends in town who want to see Dallas touristy faves—such as The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza, Majestic Theatre, the Magnolia Building (with the famous flying red horse) or Renaissance Tower—Grayson Social, located in the newly renovated historic LTV Tower, is just blocks away. Just be sure to call ahead for large groups and wear something loose-fitting. You’ll want to enjoy every last bite of your experience at this new Dallas hotspot.

Kaleidoscopic Confections Satisfy your sweet tooth in the swankiest way possible at ‘Lette Macarons

‘LETTE MACARONS 1151 E. Southlake Boulevard 817.823.0079 LetteMacarons.com

When it comes to sweets in Southlake, the dainty macaron is having a moment. ‘Lette Macarons, the iconic Beverly Hills bakeshop, offers row upon colorful row of the pretty pastries in its new Park Village shop. Step into the glossy, sophisticated space, and you’ll feel like you’re inside a Technicolor fairytale—one that ends with dreamy, brightly hued confections. You can find macarons at many specialty bakeries, but ‘Lette Macarons offers a sweet take on the French-inspired delicacy. Each pillowy soft cookie is freshly made by hand in colors so vibrant they could brighten anyone’s day. The macarons start with crisp discs of almond cookies that give way to a luscious ganache filling in alluring flavors such as Caribbean Chocolate, Sweet Wedding Almond, Sicilian Pistachio and seasonal flavors such as this summer’s Blueberry Lemon. For an exciting change of pace from the usual flavors, we fancy the Rose and Violet Cassis macarons. The Rose, in particular, is light and airy, with an intense floral flavor that builds with each bite. It’s certainly a fresh spin on the treats you’d find behind a typical bakery counter. If you’ve always been on the fence on how you like your cookies—crispy or chewy—you get the best of both worlds with a macaron. Each bite provides a tantalizing textural contrast. You can select the macarons on an a la carte basis (it’s the best way to discover new favorites) or get boxes ranging from two to 36 macarons. And for those extra-special soirees, ‘Lette offers a tiered party tower complete with custom flowers. When you can check off décor and dessert in one fell swoop, it’s a win in our book. Just be prepared to splurge—individual macarons are $2.25. Whether you lean toward classic flavors or you prefer to savor something a little more unique, you’ll want to try all the flavors at ‘Lette Macarons; each cookie has its own character and personality. Swing by and taste why Southlake has a sweet spot for the prettiest Parisian import: the delicate macaron.

Where there’s smoke, there’s a darn good cocktail. Wildwood Grill uses hickory smoke to make the venerable Old Fashioned new again. There’s plenty of showmanship when this cocktail is prepared tableside, which makes it all the more fun to duplicate at home. With glowing embers and swirling smoke, this Old Fashioned is just the cocktail to impress dinner guests at your next summer soiree.

INSTRUCTIONS: Place the hickory smoking chips on a cedar plank and use the blowtorch to create a small fire. When the chips are glowing orange, extinguish the flame by placing an Old Fashioned glass over the top. Allow smoke to build in glass for 1-2 minutes. Mix the bourbon, maple syrup and bitters into the smoked glass until syrup has been dissolved. Serve neat or with a few ice cubes.

Keeping It Real Laugh all night at the Mom’s Night Out: Summer Break Tour

B

eing a mom is hard work. The best way to get through the most difficult days is to commiserate with your friends over a glass of wine or laugh along to the hilariously relatable YouTube videos #IMOMSOHARD. The women behind the videos, Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, are taking their comedy around the U.S. this summer as they go on the Mom’s Night Out: Summer Break Tour. Invite all your mom friends to the show at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas on July 28. You’ll instantly feel comfortable in this uproariously honest show, where Kristin and Jen share personal stories about nighttime routines, stretch marks, Spanx, summer break and everything in between. For more than 40 years combined, Kristin and Jen have been performing, teaching and writing comedy. They went to the same school in Nebraska but did not meet until they were both performing stand-up at an underground comedy club. Since April 2016, the duo has made more than 40 videos, each one amassing hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and Facebook—and some with more than three million hits. They also post funny updates and live steams on their Facebook page, which has more than 700,000 likes. Get dressed up with your girlfriends, and leave your husbands and kids at home for a night of mom-to-mom bonding over all the shared experiences (glamorous and not-so-much) that all moms can relate to. In the words of Kristin in her “I Mom Friend So Hard” video, “It’s so important to make really good mom friends!” And there is no better way to make those friends than by laughing together, guaranteed.

lather on your sunscreen and suit up—it’s time to hit the beach. But forget the snorkel and instead grab a surfboard. Whether or not you have the know-how shouldn’t stop you—surf schools abound on world-famous shores. There’s also the boogie-board option if a full-size surfboard is intimidating. They are just as exciting and make learning to navigate the waves easy and fun. Rather watch the waves than catch them? These beaches also provide the perfect sun and sand for catching rays. Whatever your preference, make like a tourist and immerse yourself in the culture of a surfer town, dude.

Huntington Beach, California You can’t talk surfing in the United States without mentioning Huntington Beach, California, which is aptly named Surf City, USA. The town tops many a list of the

best places to surf not only in America, but also in the world. Five beaches line the 10 miles of uninterrupted sand in Surf City, USA. Huntington City Beach is known for the Huntington Beach Pier, which serves as a tourism totem for the more than 11 million annual visitors to this beach. The waves cycle with a consistent swell, making Huntington Beach home to numerous surf competitions. Bolsa Chica State Beach is known for having waters suitable for all skills, so you’ll find most of the novice surfers practice their moves here. Huntington State Beach is best known for body- and boogie-boarding along with bonfire nights. Rounding out the list are Sunset Beach and Huntington Dog Beach, which may be a canine and companion hotspot on land, but don’t expect to send Fido to any surf schools. If you’re looking for picturesque beaches to visit sans surfing, this famous seaside city in southern California also has you covered. Just be prepared for the masses of visitors who flock to Huntington Beach each summer. Stake your claim early on whichever beach you plan to roll out your towel. SurfCityUSA.com

North Shore, Oahu Island, Hawaii While our entire 50th state is a beach-lover’s paradise, if you want to give your board a ride in famous waters, head to Waimea Bay. Known as the birthplace of big wave surfing, the bay is located off Oahu Island’s North Shore. This historical landmark for surfers is home to competition after competition, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Other North Shore beaches with surf-worthy waves include Ehukai (Banzai Pipeline) and Sunset Beach. During the summer months, the waves subside enough to make the Pacific waters along North Shore Beach suitable for swimming and pleasant enough for beach picnics. The North Shore town of Haleiwa is a laid-back community of surf enthusiasts and has become a social and artistic hotspot for residents and visitors alike. Art galleries, restaurants and shops speckle the streets of the town known for its country ambiance. GoHawaii.com

Mamanuca Islands, Fiji It’s no wonder the hit reality television program “Survivor” has chosen the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji as the location for two of its seasons. The land and waterscapes of the group of 20 islands, situated in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, are simply breathtaking. With palm tree-lined beaches, crystal clear waters and live coral reefs, the Mamanucas offer plenty of nature mixed with a luxury resort here and there. However, if you’ve come to surf, the island chain is also home to aweinspiring breaks. Your surf skills should be on the upper end of a scale that measures easy to difficult waters to navigate with your board. While Desperations might be aptly named, don’t let Swimming Pools fool you. The six main breaks off the Mamanuca Islands are not for the faint of heart. But, if you are a land lover, watching shortboarders, longboarders and bodyboarders maneuver their way through the tubes can be just as fun. Fiji.travel

Hossegor, France Located Located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, the town of Soorts-Hossegor is known as the surfing capitol of Europe. Hossegor lays nestled in the southwestern-most corner of the country right above Spain’s northern border. With its close proximity to some of the best surfing waters in the Atlantic Ocean—and it’s more than four miles of beach— Hossegor gives summer tourists everything they want in a surfer’s holiday. For experts who wish to tame these waters, world-renown waves can be found in such sweet spots as Gravière and La Nord along Hossegor’s coast. However, if you aren’t an experienced surfer, book a class at one of the many surf schools in town. And if you’d rather stay dry and just soak up the rays, Hossegor also boasts some of the cleanest beaches around. Take a break from the sun to visit Hossegor’s Market Hall. The two-time cancer survivor has made it his mission to find ways to give back and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

I DEVELOPED A LOVE FOR RUNNING: in eighth grade. I stopped doing all my other sports to concentrate on running since I had some natural ability. SOME OF THE PROUDEST MOMENTS FROM MY RUNNING CAREER INCLUDE: running Cross Country at Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon, and in 1980 being part of the team to win the Oregon Cross Country State Championship. The second was placing in the top 20 out of more than 200 runners at the Furman Invitational in 1984 while both my parents and late uncle were in attendance. MY MOTIVATION TO RUN STEMS FROM: the peace it gives me—just being able to get in the zone where I get an inner calm and feel the endorphins. Also, I find it is a place to ponder life’s ups and downs. THE RUNNER I MOST ADMIRE IS: the late Steve Prefontaine, who ran at University of Oregon. Prefontaine died in an auto accident at age 24. At the time of his death, Prefontaine held every American record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters, which is quite amazing. My favorite quotes from Prefontaine are: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” and “Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it.” SURVIVING CANCER TWICE HAS SHOWN ME THAT: God has unaccomplished business for me on this earth. In May 2014, I was diagnosed with melanoma of the scalp and had initial surgery. I had a reoccurrence in September 2014. Doctors gave

me a 70-percent chance of a deadly recurrence. By the grace of God, doctors reclassified it as a sarcoma and not melanoma in 2015. Fortunately for me, sarcoma is not as deadly and aggressive as melanoma. I WAS DRAWN TO BOB JONES NATURE CENTER (BJNC): when I was searching for some green space upon moving to Texas in 2014. I had tried some other natural areas, but they were crowded and on cement, and I wanted a place out in nature. MY GUIDED SATURDAY-MORNING RUNS AT BJNC: depend on the ability and goals of the folks who show up. I try to make the program fit various levels of runners or non-runners and adjust the distance and pace accordingly. Normally, we run between four and seven miles on the dirt trails. WHEN I LEAD THE TRAILS RUNS, I PERSONALLY ENJOY: not only nature and regenerating myself, but helping people reach their goals, whether it’s running a 5K, 10K or a half or full marathon. Just watching people become better runners fills me with joy. WHEN I’M NOT RUNNING, I’M: watching live bands. I’m into hard rock and some new-rock bands. I also enjoy traveling to places such as Jamaica, Cancun and Lake Tahoe. MY RUNNING PHILOSOPHY IS THAT: it’s something anyone can do. People who have never tried it would be surprised at what they can do over time. This was the case with two women I worked with going up to their first half marathon. They couldn’t believe what they were able to do. I was proud of both of them for running the full 13 miles. MY BEST ADVICE FOR NEW RUNNERS IS TO: not do too much too quickly. It’s easy to push yourself at first and think you should be able to get a certain number of miles in a certain time. You have to establish a base of miles, much like a pyramid, and that takes time and self-control.

Mallory lost 50 pounds!†

Before I began my Medi-Weightloss® journey, I was the heaviest I had ever been, and I was in denial about what it was going to take to stop gaining weight and get healthy. I took every chance to eat, and I never picked the healthier option because I knew a miracle weight loss pill was just around the corner. I never thought about nutrition. I avoided scales, mirrors, and cameras. Still, there was no denying the size 14 tag on all of my pants. After battling fertility issues, I finally woke up. I realized that I was doing this to myself, and I was the only one who could do something about it. After much research, I decided on the Medi-Weightloss® Program. What I love about the program is that they taught me how to eat better, cook healthy meals for me and my family, portion control, and accountability. Starting this process was scary, but the fear passed the moment I left my first consultation. I couldn’t wait to get home to clean out the junk and fill it will healthy foods. As promised, I saw results after the first week. I continued to follow the program as directed and lost weight week after week. After five months, I went from 185 pounds to 135 pounds, a total weight loss of 50 pounds†. I can say that I am happier with myself today than I have ever been. I know that I couldn’t have done it without the Medi-Weightloss® Program and the truly amazing support I received from my Medi-Weightloss® team.
