common threads

Of all the places in the world, we’ve chosen this area to call home. Together, we’ve seen Southlake’s population surge from 10,000 to over 30,000 residents. Carroll ISD has grown too from a 4A to a 6A school district, where today nearly 40% of the student body are people of color.

When it comes to the safety and security of our most precious residents, we’ve come to rely on the Southlake School Resource Officers who have honorably met the call of duty for the past decade at each of Carroll’s 11 campuses.

Student safety is a cornerstone of the district, which was again ranked as the No. 1 public school district in DFW and No. 3 in the state, according to Niche’s annual rankings. In fact, Carroll ISD received A+ ratings in most categories including Academics, Teachers, Sports, Clubs & Activities and College Prep.

Each spring, the faculty selects students whom they feel represent the best and brightest of the rising senior class. These Green Jackets also hold an honorable place within the school and the exceedingly diverse community at large.

Rising senior and Caroll Green Jacket Max Keating understands the common threads of those he represents when he says, "Being a Green Jacket means more to me than wearing a distinctive green blazer — it embodies the qualities of acceptance and selflessness that define true leadership."

Thanks to those who make the grade at Carroll ISD, especially our SROs and Green Jackets, for continuing to exemplify service and character to all students.

Yours in Southlake Style,

BLAZING the TRAIL

Carroll Senior High School lives by one simple yet powerful motto: "Inspire Excellence." Filtered by high academic standing and chosen by teachers for their leadership abilities, no other group of students upholds those standards higher than the Green Jackets.

Each year, a group of juniors is chosen with great care and consideration to wear the distinguished green blazer. As representatives and ambassadors of the district, the Green Jackets volunteer at school and city events and serve as shining examples of the district's dedication to excellence, both in and out of the classroom.

“To be a Green Jacket, to me, is to uphold the tradition that Southlake so often mentions,” 2023-2024 Green Jacket Moksha Davaloor says. “I think Green Jackets balance the rigor and leadership that Carroll instills and encourages, while simultaneously understanding that they are only one small part of a very large system.”

Green Jackets are more than just students — they are high-achieving, positive leaders who stand out amongst their peers and are always eager to serve. Established during the 1998-1999 academic year, the Green Jackets were founded by Dr. Daniel Presley, who at the time was the principal of Carroll High School, now known as Carroll Senior High School.

The concept of the Green Jackets was inspired by the Maroon Coats, a group of students at Texas A&M University who is dedicated to serving their university and city. They are known for their leadership skills, academic excellence and commitment to service — the same principles that the Green Jackets were founded on.

CISD GREEN
JACKETS

Rebecca Gould is a French teacher at Carroll Senior High School who worked with the Green Jackets last year. As the former liaison between the Green Jackets and Carroll ISD sponsors, she was crucial in facilitating communication and ensuring everyone was on the same page. Carrie Sanders will take over as the Green Jackets sponsor this year.

“It started because of the need to have a positive representative at district and community events,” Rebecca says. “The Green Jackets are important to the school and community because they represent the best of us.”

With every new class of students striving to positively impact their senior year, the Green Jackets are a longtime tradition that has continued to last for 25 years.

Becoming a Green Jacket is no easy feat. Each student has to make it through a multi-step process that requires high academic achievement and a strong work ethic. The first two steps take place behind the scenes. All students with a 95 average or better are eligible and make it through the first round.

In the second round, teachers are given the list of students who have met the GPA requirements and select eight male and eight female students who have demonstrated leadership skills and a strong commitment to academic excellence. Students must receive multiple votes from teachers in order to move on to

the third round. This year, all students received at least seven votes from their teachers.

"I received an email saying that I had made it to the third round, and if I wanted to be a Green Jacket, I would have to write an essay," Moksha says. "I didn't know that I had been entered in the first two rounds, so it took me by surprise."

This essay allows students to present their case for why they would make a strong Green Jacket.

"I felt like the prompt was something I could approach really creatively," Moksha says. "The prompt asked about which qualities embody a Green Jacket, and that was pretty much the only requirement besides the word limit. It was definitely a very relaxed process, and I appreciate that everyone helping out really made sure none of us applicants felt stressed or anxious."

This selection process ensures that only the most equipped students are chosen to wear the coveted Green Jacket. Erin Mickan expressed her surprise and excitement when she learned she had been selected to be a Green Jacket for the 2023-2024 school year.

"I couldn't believe it," Erin says. "I found out one morning while getting ready for school, and immediately called my mom. I was honestly shocked to see that I had been selected for something so special."

The Green Jackets’ newest members include Taryn Barnes, Nicole Beres, Chloe Brannon, Moksha Davaloor, Joe Ferrara, Cole Findlay, Coleman Hayes, Yasmina

"Although there are very few students selected, there is a wide variety of personalities and amazing students that I wouldn't have gotten to know otherwise," Erin says. "It's been really rewarding to get to know these students and become friends while serving our community."

The Green Jackets are integral to Carroll ISD events, serving as hospitality ambassadors and ensuring guests feel welcome. Their duties include greeting guests, directing them to certain locations and distributing programs.

"Being a happy face ready to help is always comforting to people who may not know where they need to go, what the schedule is or how to sign in," Joe Ferrara says. "I love being able to help people in that way."

Rebecca says the scope of where the Green Jackets lend their support is vast.

"Green Jackets serve at any Carroll ISD event where they are asked,” Rebecca says. “The Green Jackets served at 30 CISD and community events in the past year."

Some of their commitments include prom, school assemblies and the graduation ceremony.

"I loved graduation," Joe says. "I've never been to a high school graduation ceremony, so it was so fun to see it happen. The energy was really exciting, and I loved being able to help the seniors finish out their high school careers."

Having started their high school journey amidst the pandemic, all current Green Jackets have the unique advantage of participating in activities they missed during their freshman year. That includes the Freshman Friendsie, formerly known as FISH camp, which features a pep rally, a presentation from counseling and administration, a tour of the school and a student panel.

"I think [the Freshman Friendsie] is the event I'm looking forward to most," Moksha says. "We never really had a fullfledged FISH camp because of COVID, so I'm planning on living vicariously through it."

Another significant school kickoff that the Green Jackets are looking forward to is convocation.

"I am very excited to attend convocation and help Carroll faculty start off the 2023-2024 school year," Erin says. "I have been so fortunate to have been influenced by so many CISD faculty members who will be at the convocation. I am excited to see them and give back to a district that has given me so much."

You can also find the Green Jackets at other local celebrations, including the Baccalaureate ceremony and the Sports Hall of Fame Induction.

"I'm excited to help at all of the more specific events that I don't know too much about," Joe says. "We served at the Sports Hall of Fame Induction in May, and learning about what it was and experiencing why Green Jackets are so important in the community was so interesting. Being able to get involved in areas that I'm not super familiar with is such a special experience, and I'm so happy to be able to serve our community in this way."

Green Jackets exhibit honor, integrity and character. Their exemplary behavior makes them true role models for young Dragons and leaves a legacy for all to follow.

"Being a Green Jacket to me means more than wearing a distinctive green blazer — it embodies the qualities of acceptance and selflessness that define true leadership," Max Keating says.

Goal In One Kennedy Fuller Named Gatorade’s National Girls Soccer Player Of The Year

La dy Dragon soccer star Kennedy Fuller has had a busy year. First, she led the Lady Dragons to reach first in district, contributing 55 goals and 26 assists over a 29-1 season. Then, she and the U.S. Under-16 Women’s Youth National Team won the championship trophy at the Mondial Montaigu Tournament in France. Now she’s been named Gatorade’s National Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

After helping the Lady Dragons secure their state championship win in 2022, the North Carolina commit secured numerous MVP awards from the University Interscholastic League and “The Dallas Morning News.” However, being recognized as Gatorade’s National Girls Soccer Player of the Year felt different, especially with Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson surprising her with the trophy while surrounded by family and friends. As part of her recognition, Kennedy got to attend the Gatorade Player of the Year Awards and the ESPYs alongside Kansas City Current midfielder Samantha Mewis in Los Angeles last month.

“It means so much to me,” an emotional Kennedy says in a press conference. “This has been a goal since the beginning of last year when I started my freshman season. It reminds me that anything is possible if you keep on going.”

ALL-STAR

As Carroll ISD’s official orthopaedic, sports medicine and spinal care provider, All-Star Orthopaedics understands that being here for our community means meeting you where YOU are. Summer can be HOT, but it doesn’t usually stop our athletes from working on their game or families from playing together on the course or in the pool.

For busy families, being met with an injury means getting the help you need as quickly as possible. Our most important message is “Skip the Urgent Care, come straight to All-Star Orthopaedics.” It doesn’t matter if it’s your star student-athlete or senior relative. When you reach out to us first, you can trust that we will work very hard to get you in on the same or next day.

We have made reaching our specialists even easier with our texting feature and new web-based scheduling portal. New and established patients alike can simply visit our website,

AllStarOrtho.com, and find a good time to come in and see our providers. Don’t worry, we have plenty of staff in the office to take your calls and answer your questions. This is just one more way we are working to meet you where you are — on the baseball or football field, on a ski or hiking trip or fixing the light fixture at home on a Sunday afternoon.

On-site imaging and eight orthopaedic specialists on board help make your visit to our location a smooth and swift experience every time. Need physical therapy? We have you covered on site as well.

You can rest easy knowing that you’re in the right hands when you call All-Star Orthopaedics first. Our friendly staff, personalized care, conservative treatment plans and state-of-the-art facilities are just a few reasons why patients refer All-Star to their family and friends over and over again.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH CARE SPECIALTY?

I specialize in minimally-invasive spine surgery. Utilizing these advanced techniques has been the main focus of my 27-year career as a neurosurgeon.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

The most rewarding aspect of my career is taking a patient to surgery who is experiencing agonizing pain and having them walk out 60 minutes later with their pain resolved. Our model of care has greatly decreased the number of patients who require surgery while achieving excellent outcomes and patient satisfaction.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE HEALTH CARE?

When I was 5 years old, I saw my grandfather suffer from his first heart attack. The profound emotional impact the health scare had on my family ignited my determination to assist others and led me to pursue a career in medicine.

WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART FROM OTHERS IN THE AREA?

We focus on conservative treatments for our patients. For those requiring surgical intervention, we employ minimally-invasive techniques that decrease recovery time and swiftly restore patients back to their normal lives.

WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD?

The single biggest misconception I see is that addiction is caused by substance use. In reality, addiction is a distinct neurological disorder existing before anyone engages in any substance use. Our collective failure to understand this has led to inadequate prevention efforts and a poor understanding of what the real struggles are.

WHAT MAKES CLIENTS WANT TO COME BACK TO YOU?

It really comes down to empathy and belief. Patients come to me socially and self-stigmatized from repeated attempts to get sober and just feel lost. Having someone who understands, empathizes and engages in a non-judgmental approach helps others to see a path forward.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Walking with patients along this journey of recovery is so rewarding. With most chronic diseases, we mostly manage or slow the progression of symptoms. Addiction is the only chronic disease where symptoms can be reversed. Within a relatively short period of time, you can witness dramatic and profound physical, emotional and spiritual changes in an individual.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH CARE PASSION, AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT?

I am passionate about helping others with their skin diseases. Having skin issues can be very debilitating, leading to lower self-esteem.

HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

We see patients for free who come from GRACE and The Gatehouse and supply them with extra skin care products. The practice also donates to a large number of philanthropic organizations throughout the community.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

The most rewarding part of my work is the relationships I have built with my patients and staff. I am now at a stage in practice where I am seeing my past acne teenagers come in with their own kids.

ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES OR TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER?

We have the new innovative Potenza machine utilizing radiofrequency microneedling to firm and tighten the skin. The Emsella and Emsculpt machines also increase muscle density, which is great for the pelvic floor and our core strength.

PLASTIC SURGERY WITH A PURPOSE

Dr. Mason Has Cared For The Community For Over 20 Years

If anyone knows how much impact a doctor can have on someone’s life, it’s Dr. Mark Mason. Before he became a successful surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mason grew up in West Texas as a bull riding state champion who went to college on a scholarship. But after he broke his jaw during a bull riding accident, a surgeon’s impressive skills and compassion helped him toward recovery and compelled him to pursue a career in medicine.

Today, Dr. Mason continues to help people through his local practice, Southlake Plastic Surgery & Med Spa.

Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Mason excels in all aspects of cosmetic surgery, from liposuctions to body and facelifts. Completing oral, maxillofacial and surgical residencies through illustrious medical programs at the Stanford University Medical Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Mason knows how to achieve the best results for his

patients. And with a team of dedicated and experienced staff members, some of whom have been with him since the very beginning, Dr. Mason treats all of his patients like they’re family.

But Dr. Mason’s impact doesn’t stop at his practice. Throughout his 23 years in the area, Dr. Mason has contributed to Southlake however he could. From being a member of White’s Chapel United Methodist Church to donating to schools’ PTOs, the Southlake Women’s Club and GRACE, Dr. Mason has always made a point to give back to the community that has given so much to him.

Whether you visit for his surgical expertise or his med spa, you only get the best with Dr. Mason and Southlake Plastic Surgery. His many years with the community and his repeat customers that keep coming back to him continue to prove that every day.

Flowing With Features

The Southlake market may be moving slower than in years past, but the competition for prime real estate never ceases. It’s not enough to be in a great school district — today’s buyers are looking for all the bells and whistles for their family’s forever home. From an acre-plus wooded lot off of Kimball Avenue, the five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home at 747 Shady Lane has more than enough room for growing families at 6,165 square feet. Recently built in 2019, this thoughtfully rendered $3,995,000 property has plenty of functional and eye-popping touches.

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE

The most noticeable feature amongst this property’s array of amenities has to be its negative edge pool and hot tub. Together they look like pristine panes of glass set amidst a remarkable travertine patio. The outdoor space has a full kitchen and multiple seating areas to enjoy, including an oversized stone fire pit that provides even more relaxing options on those cooler fall nights.

A recent addition of accordion walk-out doors by the dining room and master bedroom provide even more visibility and access to the secluded, tree-lined outdoor oasis that will be the envy of many area homeowners.

MODERN TOUCHES

This exquisite home has even more to offer on the inside, including an expansive home office and a luxurious dining room. When it’s time to play, the game room and bar is the ultimate entertaining space that comes complete with a sink, dishwasher and two refrigerators to keep the fun flowing.

Great for work and play, this home may have saved its best attributes for when it's time to rest and recharge. The spa-like master bathroom is bright and light with many modern touches, including a central chandelier and lanterns festooned with greenery. The deep soaking tub rests adjacent to a beautifully tiled wall that sets the mood every day of the week. The bathroom’s thoughtful touches extend into the recently remodeled closets with additional customized storage space for the next lucky couple. (His) closet even includes a stackable washer and dryer to make laundry day a snap.

CAMPUS PATROL

SOUTHLAKE SRO s CELEBRATE A DECADE OF ITS THIN GREEN LINE

Every day, over 60 Southlake police officers go out into the city and make life safer for residents and visitors alike. Whether they are patrolling community events on foot, conducting traffic stops or responding to emergency calls, Southlake police have always demonstrated an unrivaled commitment to the community.

While the majority of the force patrols the city at large, a select few are chosen to protect our most precious population at Carroll ISD’s campuses. These 18 individuals are Southlake’s school resource officers (SROs), and they’re the ones to celebrate for providing a decade of safety at our schools.

D.A.R.E. TO SERVE

The first partnership between the Southlake Police Department and Carroll ISD was in 1989 when officers visited with elementary school students as part of D.A.R.E., or the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. The partnership came at a good time as new campuses opening in Dawson Middle School and Eubanks Intermediate School increased the need for a stronger police presence.

Data from law enforcement agencies at the time indicated that the majority of school attacks took place at the secondary grade level. So when Southlake police hired its first three school resource officers in 2005, it was decided they would primarily focus on the high school and middle school campuses, with one officer dividing time between Carroll Middle and Dawson Middle Schools.

Then in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in 2012, school safety became an even bigger priority for the district. Soon thereafter, 11 SROs were hired to patrol each campus in Carroll ISD.

“Our schools have remained safe within those 10 years,” SRO Sgt. Blas Hernandez says. “We wanted to make sure an SRO was on every campus when students are present, because they are our focus.”

The number of SROs increased yet again in 2018 after voters approved a $208 million bond package that included funds to hire two more officers at the Carroll High and Senior High campuses. For Sgt. Hernandez, becoming part of an SRO program was an aspiration he had since graduating from high school.

“I was always drawn to teaching, but the teachers that influenced me the most were the ones that had different careers prior to teaching,” Sgt. Hernandez says. “As a police officer, I was intrigued at the prospect of doing both as an SRO. I served as the SRO at the senior high school before being promoted and going back to patrol. When the SRO program added an additional supervisor, I jumped at the opportunity and have been there ever since.”

LEADING, LEARNING AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Southlake SRO division bases its approach on the National Association of School Resource Officers, a law enforcement organization that is widely considered to be the global leader in school-based policing. Its model divides an SRO’s responsibilities into three key areas — teaching, counseling and law enforcement.

“We are there to protect our most precious and vulnerable population — our kids,” Sgt. Hernandez says.

“But along the way, we are also a mentor for the students and work to prepare them for their next stage in life. That type of relationship at such an early age grows and forms into a strong trust between them and the police.”

The students at Walnut Grove Elementary School certainly trust officer Kim Smith in that same way. Before becoming an SRO, officer Smith retired from the Grapevine Police Department in 2015 after a successful 20-year career in law enforcement. Upon reporting for duty at Walnut Grove, she found police work on campus was much different from what she was used to.

JUL/AUG 23 • 45 SOUTHLAKE STYLE.COM
46 • JUL/AUG 23 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE

“In my first 20 years, no one was ever really excited to see a police officer show up at their home or work,” officer Smith says. “But at Walnut Grove, I have over 600 young hearts who are always excited to see me or any other members of my team. I feel blessed to see the world through the eyes of a generation who believes in honesty, integrity, kindness and compassion.”

Officer Smith’s shifts start the same way every day with her coordinating traffic during morning drop-offs. Afterward, she finishes conducting perimeter checks around the campus before spending the rest of the day interacting with students and staff in the hallways. On Wednesdays, the Walnut Grove news crew will interview her for their weekly segment “Ask Officer Smith,” where they ask her questions about everything from her everyday work life to “would you rather?”

Sometimes, she’ll even involve students in her daily tasks.

“They share responsibilities at each grade level on how to keep our school safe,” she says. “Some simply give me a report of the day, which can include friends helping one another, to safety measures with them checking the door after they come in from recess. Involving them with the safety and security of our school helps them to build confidence and feel safe, which is often just as important as keeping them safe.”

But being an SRO isn’t just about building relationships with students and staff — it’s also about educating them on how to create a healthier learning environment for everyone. Last spring, the SRO division stepped up its educational initiatives by introducing a new anti-drug curriculum called the Law Enforcement Against Drugs program, or L.E.A.D.

“We needed a standardized curriculum that not only addressed the drug problem but also spent time developing the character of our students,” Sgt. Hernandez says. “We’re always reviewing the most up-todate research and practices to make sure we have the best training and equipment for our community.”

But their guidance doesn’t stop at class time. Sometimes, they’ll approach students personally for one-onone conversations ranging from personal accountability to everyday safety.

“Students learn they can go to their SRO for help or guidance on any kind of issue, and they know we will follow through,” Sgt. Hernandez says. “Whether it is opening milk cartons for kindergarteners at lunch, teaching classes about oral hygiene or organizing a Red Ribbon Week carnival, our SROs have servant hearts and are constantly searching for ways to go above and beyond for their schools and community.”

Their interactions with students and staff are usually fun, but an SRO always needs to be on alert in case of an emergency. That’s the situation Dawson Middle School officer Anthony Pate found himself in January 2021 when he had to disarm a potentially violent suspect.

“I was preparing my patrol vehicle for work when I heard a call over the radio about a male subject holding a hatchet… in front of Carroll Middle School,” officer Pate says. “I immediately responded due to the SRO on that campus

being off for the day. I located the subject approximately 300 yards away and coordinated with the school about his location. With the help of other patrol officers, we were able to peacefully place the male into custody and de-escalate the situation.”

Sgt. Hernandez points to officer Pate’s response to the emergency as an example of how vigilant all of the officers are and should be.

“Our primary focus is the safety and security of our schools, and we remain committed to doing that effectively,” Sgt. Hernandez says.

FOR EVERY CAMPUS

The Southlake SRO program has received much recognition since it expanded to every campus 10 years ago. In 2021, the group won Agency of the Year by the Texas Association of School Resource Officers, while officer Smith was awarded SRO of the Year by the district. Officer Pate was recognized with the National Association of School Resource Officers’ Valor Award for his heroic actions as well.

However, they’ll be the first to tell you that those accolades mean nothing next to the support they receive from the community on a daily basis.

“The support I get from this community is amazing,” officer Pate says. “Talking to students and working with teachers and administrators every day makes my job so fun and rewarding. Being an SRO at Dawson Middle School has brought me closer to the community than ever before. I’m honored to be part of the division and work with some of the best SROs in the state of Texas.”

For officer Smith, 2023 will be a big year as she sees her fourth-graders graduate from Walnut Grove.

“The class of 2032 is very special and monumental to me,” she says. “They were kindergartners when I joined the Southlake Police Department, and now they’ll be moving on to the next grade level. My goal is to be around until 2032 and watch them walk across the stage as a Dragon graduate. This year will be one of continued joy, honor and pride in being their officer.”

New faces aren’t the only things Southlake SROs can come to expect for the new school year. For one thing, the agency received a $156,000 grant from the state’s public safety office for new equipment, including 26 bullet-resistant ballistic shields in the event of an active shooter event. Two new auxiliary officers have been hired to provide support on any campus wherever needed, and the department has even expanded its excellent services by sending its first SRO, officer Gregory Potter, to monitor Florence Elementary School in Keller ISD.

But through all of its new recruits, resources and upgrades, the one thing that will never change for the SROs is their love for Southlake and all of the families, students and teachers who live here.

“To me, being an SRO means being the ultimate protector,” Sgt. Hernandez says. “We will continue to be proactive in our approach to protecting our citizens — especially our children.”

“TO ME, BEING AN SRO MEANS BEING THE ULTIMATE PROTECTOR.”

What’s your secret to success?

I believe the first line of our mission statement sums it up pretty well… “We at Tolleson Orthodontics will be, first and foremost, loving people who are committed to building up every single person with whom we come in contact.”

How is your dental practice different from others in the area?

We work hard to combine modern excellence with a relaxed, family-friendly personality. And since Southlake is home to my business and family, you know who we are and where to find us!

What is the most rewarding part of your job? It’s so rewarding to watch self-conscious patients discover self-confidence during orthodontic treatment. A smile is powerful that way. Even our office mascot, T-Rex, wasn’t always the king of dinosaurs. Like most of us, he battled selfconsciousness for one reason or another, be it for his tiny arms or big teeth. My reward is seeing my patients roar with confidence after their smile transformations!

Southlake Dentist Welcomes Robotic Assistant

Dr. Hanife “Bay” Bayraktaroglu’s newest addition to her team works like a machine — but that’s only because it is one. As a licensed prosthodontist, Dr. Bay has helped her patients achieve smiles they can be proud of for over two decades. But since bringing the new Yomi Dental Robot into her practice at Smile Rehab Centers a year ago, she’s already been able to help over 100 patients while reducing their pain and recovery time. With the support of her state-of-the-art $150,000 Yomi, Dr. Bay’s Southlake practice gives a glimpse into the future of dentistry.

I’VE BEEN IN DENTISTRY SINCE… 1997. I got my doctorate from the Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry in Istanbul, Turkey, then I moved to the United States after I got married. I specialize in full-arch cases in prosthodontics, which includes implants as well as partial crowns and old-fashioned dentures.

MY PRACTICE IS VERY… technology-driven.

I’m a huge believer in the advancement of dentistry and how technology helps us grow and serve our patients better. Before Yomi, I used intraoral scanners to get a digital impression of patients’ oral cavities — teeth, bones, gums and all. Then I used a facial scanner to map out the implants and where the final placement needed to go in their mouths.

I FIRST LEARNED ABOUT YOMI FROM… the Neocis surgical robotics company directly. When they heard about all of the technology I had at my center, they wanted to meet with me and share what Yomi could do. They claimed it was the next big thing in dentistry, and it’s the only dental surgical system approved by the FDA. I ran a small test with it, and I loved it so much that I decided we had to have it.

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I NOTICED

WAS… how precise it was. When you scan the patient’s mouth, it allows you to plan for the best position and angle of the implant with pre-measured cutting. When I conduct the surgery, I am always in control of the drill from my laptop and can make adjustments as needed along the way, even if it’s mid-surgery. That’s because Yomi has a haptic guidance system that follows the placement even if the patient moves, ensuring accuracy every single time.

THE BEST THING ABOUT YOMI IS… it makes my work much more efficient. Before Yomi, I had to not only schedule the procedure itself — I also had to block out time for healing before the patient proceeds with the second-stage surgery. But because Yomi is minimally invasive, it takes care of both steps in one 10-minute procedure and eliminates the need for a follow-up. This results in less pain and bleeding overall and gives the patient a more comfortable recovery period.

WHEN WE DO THE SURGERY, THE PATIENT… can actually see the navigation system on the big screen. They find it very interesting, and they’re often surprised at how quickly it goes by. It’s just one, two, three, and they’re all done. It actually takes longer to numb the patient than it does to perform the actual procedure.

THE MOUTH IS… a very emotional area. That’s why dental patients are scared of the idea of doctors being inside their mouths. As a prosthodontist, I take pride in providing patients with an experience where they are relaxed and comfortable and feel like they can trust me with their smile.

THE GOAL OF TECHNOLOGY IS ALWAYS TO… serve the patient. That’s why I place such a huge emphasis on it. If it makes surgeries more accurate, more precise, more efficient and less painful, then it’s a no-brainer for me. I strongly believe that this will become the gold standard for implant procedures in the near future.

The Futuristic Apple Of Your Eye

Apple Vision Pro Brings Immersive Experience To Personal Computing

Over the summer, Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the much-anticipated and talked about Apple Vision Pro. The revolutionary wearable spatial computer utilizes a three-dimensional user interface to blend digital content with the physical world.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing,” Cook says. “Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing.”

The headset makes use of 23 million pixels across two ultra-high-resolution displays and spatial audio that appears to originate from its virtual position. Through the use of Apple’s newest immersive

technology, users can transform any space into a personal movie theater, a conference room-sized FaceTime call or a tranquil landscape that helps to focus on the task at hand.

As true with all Apple products, the next-generation operating system is artfully designed into a custom aluminum alloy frame that curves to the user’s face, providing a tailored fit for a wide range of people. At the heart of it all is a singular piece of laminated glass polished to create a lens-like surface. On this surface is where Apple’s R1 chip processes input from an astonishing 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones that stream images eight times faster than the blink of an eye.

Michelin-Quality Barbecue Comes To Koreatown

JOA

JOAKBBQ.com

If you have an affinity for Asian cuisine, Dallas’ Koreatown near Royal Lane and Harry Hines is the place to be. From Korean fried chicken at No. 1 Plus Chicken to Asian supermarkets like Komart, Koreatown has all of the authentic flavors you could ever want. Now JOA is raising the bar on what kind of culinary experience diners can expect from the area.

Formerly known as Nuri Grill, the rebranded restaurant JOA, which is Korean for “I like it,” has been transformed into a whole new Korean barbecue experience specially catered to the customer. The owner, Wan Kim, is also the CEO

of Smoothie King and successfully grew it into a $600-million business over a 10-year period. He eventually expanded into opening his first Korean restaurant with Nuri Grill in 2021, led by Michelin-starred chef duo Minji Kim and Ben Lee.

“JOA will offer locals authentic traditional Korean food made by the same team that brought Nuri Grill to DFW,” Wan says. “We’ve repurposed Nuri Grill into a new concept that will serve as a test kitchen for potential growth concepts, including Nuri Steakhouse that will be opening in Uptown next year.”

lighting, JOA amps up the ambiance with personalized booths equipped with their own fire pits and grills. Before even thinking about dinner, guests are given the opportunity to peruse the drink menu with over 60 options from which to choose. From flavored soju and sakes to Japanese whiskey, JOA has a plethora of Asian favorites to sip. But if you’re craving that classic bartender experience, its nine Japanese whiskeys can be the foundation for any premium cocktail. Its Yuzuri liqueur can also be complemented with lime and mint for a Yuzu Mojito, and you can never go wrong with a JOA Blue Long Island that’s mixed with Blue Curacao, gin, rum and vodka.

When it’s time to eat, JOA boasts a collection of appetizers that serve as the perfect introduction to the experience ahead. The fried galbi pan-fries marinated beef ribs and serves them alongside shredded perilla leaves, while the beef tukbokki sautees a rice cake in spicy red chili, beef and pepper sauce. The Yuk Hoe beef tartare is marinated in sesame oil and seasoned with garlic, soy and egg yolk for a strong umami flavor, while the octopus is deep-fried and served with a chili and chimichurri sauce. Stews like beef doenjang and pork gochujang jjigae provide a spicy kick, and the radish kimchi fried rice will be hard to resist.

When diners are done marinating over the light bites, it’s time to move on to the barbecue, and there are two ways to enjoy it. They can either order all of their meats a la cartestyle and grill it themselves, or they can order a spread for trained servers to prepare for a fun tableside experience. The Taste of JOA comes with prime short rib, Black Angus hanger steak, ribeye and shrimp, while the Taste of Texan comes with all that plus a Duroc pork belly. The list of quality cuts goes on to include rack of lamb and porterhouse steak as well.

As the server rolls out the different meats, they’ll slice them into bite-sized pieces before searing on the grill and serving them to you with your choice of sauces. With a variety of seasonings and sauces that range from salty to sweet to spicy, you’ll have several ways to savor the many different delicious barbecue sensations. And because no meal is complete without dessert, the restaurant offers complimentary ice cream to finish your meal on a high note.

At JOA, customers will find just how pampered and luxurious Korean fine dining can be. Most will find that the name “JOA” doesn’t do the restaurant justice, because they won’t just like it — they’ll love it. Photos by Kathy Tran

Hey There, Mister O1 The Stars Align At Grapevine’s New Artisan Pizzeria

If fresh ingredients, modern architecture and authentic artisan pizzas leave you star-crossed, then you’re eating at Mister O1 in Grapevine — where pizza is considered an art form.

Established in 2014, Mister O1 was founded by Renato Viola, a master pizza chef raised in Southern Italy. By the age of 11, Renato was apprenticing under some of Italy’s best chefs. It wasn’t long before he started winning pizza-making competitions as part of the Italian Acrobatic Pizza Team. His fame grew to the point that upon immigrating to Miami in 2010, he was granted a special O1 Visa reserved for those with “extraordinary artistic ability.”

That same Visa would end up inspiring the name for his own pizza restaurant, which would eventually grow to 13 locations and be named the best pizza in Florida in “Food & Wine” magazine.

“To us, Italy is synonymous with quality,” Renato says. “At Mister O1, we focus on quality as well as simplicity to create a delicious product.”

Featuring 13 traditional and specialty pizzas and calzones, Mister O1 has all of the classic flavors pizza fans love, from cheese and pepperoni to bella margherita. Using ingredients directly sourced from Italy, Mister O1 lets the flavors speak for themselves, whether it's the fresh mushrooms and avocado in the Allesandra Jalapeno, the tuna and anchovies in the il Pescatore or the smoke prosciutto and white truffle oil in the Fabio pizza.

But what makes Mister O1 truly unique are its star pizzas where the crust is folded over and filled to create a distinct star design. Its most popular pizzas include the Star Carlos, which is filled with chorizo and jalapeno sauce, the Star Beckham filled with bacon, basil and ranch dressing and the Star Luca filled with ricotta cheese. Be sure to leave room for dessert, because you’ll want a bite of either the Nutella and banana calzone or a slice of Nutella pizza with powdered sugar dusted on top.

Diners are always looking for that authentic pizzeria experience that feels like you’re dining in a small family kitchen in Italy. But with Mister O1 opening its doors, Italy has come to Grapevine.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream Comes To Southlake

When it comes to frozen treats, Southlake loves the small-town feeling found in local parlors like The Ice Cream Place and Milwaukee Joe’s. Now families have a new place to call their ice cream home in Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, which is moving into the former Whimsy Cookie Company location on Southlake Boulevard.

Older than Braum’s but slightly younger than Dairy Queen, Handel’s has been serving scoops since 1945. When the first store opened in Youngstown, Ohio 77 years ago, its owner Alice Handel used real fruit grown in her backyard to create fresh batches of original ice cream. Today, the franchise has grown to over 100 stores in 11 states, including 11 in Texas.

Voted the No. 1 ice cream in the world by “National Geographic,” Handel’s ice cream is distinctly smooth and silky in texture, resulting in a creamy sensation that just melts in your mouth. While you can’t go wrong with classic flavors like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, those looking for more exciting options can explore the 45 different flavors Handel’s offers daily.

One of the more popular choices is called Grand Central Station, which is a graham cracker ice cream with graham cracker crumbs and chocolate-covered crunchies, while the Praline Pecan comes with candied pecans and butterscotch ripple. Other favorites such as Pumpkin Pie, Eggnog and Peppermint Bark pop up to celebrate the seasons. Fruity flavors like peach, banana and deep dish apple pie are summer favorites you can trust because they’re made with the same fresh ingredients Alice used since the very beginning.

Handle’s time-tested scoops can also top a banana split, be mixed into a shake or blended into a hurricane topped with your favorite candies. And if those aren’t enough options, their ice cream sandwiches are pressed between two oversized Oreo cookies with your choice of scoops in between. And if you’re in a popsicle mood, its flavors can be topped with rich gourmet chocolate and served on a stick as a Handel Pop. It’s up to you how you enjoy Handel’s award-winning ice cream.

Disney Dreams Come Alive

Immersive Disney Brings 100 Years Of Animation To Dallas

Ev ery Walt Disney fan dreams about flying through Neverland, swimming under the sea or watching the sun rise over Pride Rock. Now their dreams can come true with a visit to the new Immersive Disney Animation exhibit this summer.

Immersive Disney Animation is the newest interactive show by Lighthouse Immersive, the same creative team behind Mozart Immersive and The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit. Led by Academy Award-winning producer of “The Shape Of Water” J. Miles Dale, Lighthouse Immersive celebrates 100 years of animated classics from Mickey Mouse to “Encanto.”

Upon entering the lobby and coming across a true-tolife animator’s desk, guests are whisked to the world of Disney’s world-renowned artists. From there, a choice of two separate entrances will take you through a variety of exhibits. Disney fans will enjoy taking a behind-the-scenes tour of their favorite films, including storyboards, frames and 3D character models. A live reel demonstrates how Disney’s most iconic sequences look through different lay -

ers, and illustration stations allow budding animators the opportunity to draw their own original creations.

When it’s time for the show to begin, families will make their way to the main theater for a 47-minute experience through Walt Disney’s animated history. The show takes you everywhere from the magical land of Arendelle in “Frozen” to the city of “Zootopia,” all while viewers sing along to their favorite songs including “A Whole New World,” “Let It Go” and “When You Wish Upon A Star.” Bubbles emit from the ceiling during some of the show’s underwater sequences, and interactive shells, leaves and flowers pop up on the floor for viewers to step on.

You don’t have to travel to Disney World to get the same breathtaking experience. For $21-$26 per person, families can now find that same Disney magic at Immersive Disney Animation.
