putting in time There’s so much to look forward to in the sun-drenched months of summer. Vacations! Popsicles! Outdoor movies! The season itself is exciting. It’s a time to kick back in a lawn chair for a fireworks show or sip a frosty drink with your toes in the sand. If you need a few fresh ideas, check out our “Summer Side Trips” on page 60. While you might log some long hours at the pool, so do members of the awardwinning Carroll swim and dive teams. Since 2011, the boys’ swim team hasn’t lost a state championship meet. The team has accrued more consecutive state wins than any other Carroll sport. But they don’t just show up and win. “We set goals to motivate the kids,” says swim team head coach Kevin Murphy. “These kids are talented and put in a tremendous amount of time.” Turn to “Winning in the Water” on page 29 for an inside look at the Dragon swim and dive programs. Jimmy Lambert knows all about setting goals and passionately pursuing them. He owns J. Lambert Custom Homes, a Southlake luxury builder that specializes in the kind of homes fairytales are made of. Wanting a better life for his family, Lambert catapulted his career from building wooden fences to constructing multimillion-dollar estates. We call him “King of the Castles” on page 12. And in honor of Father’s Day this month, we spotlight the Indian Princess program on page 74. Hear from Southlake dad Ronnie Cook on how the program helps fathers and daughters become “Friends Always.” He says sometimes all dads need is a little time away from technology and the busyness of daily life to reconnect with who matters most. If there’s one takeaway from this issue, it’s this: Put in time doing something you love. Good things will follow.

CAMINO ISLAND JOHN GRISHAM JUNE 6 Books, Crooks and Bestsellers As we often learn from author John Grisham, nothing good is to be had from knowing too much. Such is the case for young novelist Mercer Mann, the main character in Grisham’s latest novel, “Camino Island.” Mann, recently out of work, is contacted by an employee of Bruce Cable, owner of a popular bookstore on Camino Island. Cable, who often deals in the not-so up-and-up black market of stolen books, might have hit the jackpot when a vaulted library at Princeton University is looted. Just what does Mann find out after planting herself (undercover) right in the middle of Cable’s “business?” Perhaps she learns too much for her own good.

Not everyone has a sense of humor, but trying to make it big in California as a comedian can foster a few laughs from a television audience. At least that’s what executive producer Jim Carrey believes will happen with his new comedy series, “I’m Dying Up Here.” Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) stars as Goldie, a comedy club owner who adheres to the tough-love philosophy when it comes to guiding her budding comedians in 1970s Los Angeles. The large ensemble cast includes Ari Graynor (“For a Good Time Call”), Clark Duke (“The Office”), Al Madrigal (“The Daily Show”) and Erik Griffin (“Workaholics”)—just to name a few of the familiar faces who will make an appearance on the program.

eander down nearly any residential street in Southlake and you’ll glimpse an idyllic scene: stunning homes, manicured lawns and neighborhoods that basically nail the whole quality-of-life thing.

But some Southlake homes stand apart. You know the ones—the castles that rise majestically from the earth, the most luxurious of sanctuaries. Jimmy Lambert, owner of J. Lambert Custom Homes, a Southlake luxury homebuilder, specializes in these fit-for-royalty estates. Lambert’s passion is more than constructing beautiful homes; it’s bringing families’ grandest visions to life. And no matter the vision, Lambert works with purpose and passion to create the kind of residences families want to come home to— from the steep rooflines and stately spires right down to the fence enclosing the property. The humble fence, in fact, was how Lambert first forayed into entrepreneurship. And, over the years, he took his career from wooden fences to multimillion-dollar palaces. AMBITION AND A PASSION FOR BUILDING

Ever since he was a young boy, Lambert has been building things. He and his father built fences, horse stables and barns. They poured concrete and even added on to the front of their home. “We were always building projects,” he recalls. As a teenager, Lambert continued with the construction projects and also took on a job at WinnDixie. He advanced up the ranks at the supermarket, getting promoted to assistant store manager by age 21. He was next in line to get the store manager position, but he wanted more and better opportunities. So he traded in his supermarket apron for a paintbrush, going to work for an iron company painting fences. Looking for additional cash flow and following his entrepreneurial spirit, Lambert later went into business for himself, launching a wooden fence company. He saved for tools and equipment and began selling and building fences for high-end builders in Southlake and Keller. For 17 years, Lambert sold, designed and installed fencing, eventually doing the iron gate and fence work for dozens of builders, many of which were top-tier custom builders. His fence company was thriving, but Lambert wasn’t satisfied—yet. “We developed different ways to paint and build fences, but I wanted more,” he says. “I saw how builders would sometimes take off during the week to enjoy their families. Fencing didn’t allow for that, and I wanted a better life.” Lambert studied the upper-end builders, and learned about design along with what to do and what not to do. “I was friends with many of the estate-home builders, and we discussed the homebuilding business often,” he says. “I decided SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

I wanted to build custom homes, so I worked hard, paid everything off and sold the company.” The next step in his entrepreneurial journey? Starting J. Lambert Custom Homes. Lambert had one goal in mind: He wanted to build homes families would love.

“My subs tell me stories about how some builders never step foot in the home under construction once it’s sold,” Lambert says. “I sell it and I work with families one-on-one throughout construction and after construction. They can call me on my cell—anytime with any concern.” Southlake residents Bill and Deb CASTLES COME TO LIFE Dreger know firsthand Lambert’s comPutting together a team for his new mitment to his clients—they’ve had company was relatively easy; Lambert had Lambert build two of their homes. “I’ve amassed a network of hardworking subconwatched Jimmy on many jobs. Lambert works with families through the design process and builds the home with his subs. He’s there as the concrete is poured for the slab, he’s with the framer as the walls are built, and he walks through each home with the city inspector. For Lambert, it’s a matter of building families the best possible home. “The best builders don’t delegate but oversee projects themselves to keep problems at a minimum,” he says. “My job is to make sure the process is as fun and simple as possible, so it’s enjoyable for the families we build for. It’s the little things that can make building a home fun and exciting.” Over the past 18 years, Lambert has constructed nearly 80 custom homes—most over $2 million and some close to $12 million. It can take anywhere from 12 months to four years to construct these estates; it depends largely upon the buyers’ selection process and their timeframe. Whatever buyers might dream, Lambert is ready to make it happen. “We specialize in every size and style of home for any family,” he says. “We try hard to listen to our buyers and stay on the cutting edge of cool ideas.” For Lambert, the most rewarding part of his job is making buyers happy and knowing he has succeeded in a challenging project. He enjoys when everything is moving along peacefully. “It’s constant hard work,” he says. “But I enjoy working with the subs who do such a great job with a huge passion to build these families an incredible home.”

KING OF HIS OWN CASTLE

Lambert builds in Southlake and Fort Worth, but he hangs his hat in Springtown, a charming little town 20 miles northwest of Fort Worth. He and Gina, his wife of 34 years, own more than 50 acres of land and live in a house he designed and built. “We bought raw land, built a road and cleared a place for our home by a natural pond,” Lambert says. “We selected everything. It was fun.” The couple raised their sons Cody and Ty, now grown, amidst the town’s willowy trees and rolling hills. The boys went to a small school, and Gina was involved in nearly every school event while Lambert grew his business. Looking back, Lambert attributes his success to good, old-fashioned hard work—along with a healthy dose of respect, always giving more than he takes and following through. “My business philosophy is to do right,” he says. “There is always a right way to do something. It’s the extra five percent that makes the biggest difference.” When Lambert started his company, he set out to build the kind of homes families were dreaming of. In the process, he ended up building the kind of life he always envisioned. If there’s one lesson Lambert has learned in his 30-plus year career, it’s that anything is possible. And his life is proof. 16 • JUN 17

Carroll ISD’s $208 million bond proposition passed 64 percent (2,406 votes) to 36 percent (1,370). This was a single-proposition bond election, and the first bond election for Carroll ISD since 2009. “I’m proud of the work of our committee,” said Superintendent David J. Faltys. “This process started more than two years ago with the work of the Strategic Planning Committee, followed by a facility assessment by the Capital Needs Planning Committee. EIS BAND CAPTURED EXCITING HONORS AT 47TH ANNUAL FUNFEST The Eubanks Intermediate School band traveled to Sandy Lake Amusement Park in the spring to participate in the 47th annual FunFest, an event that brings together thousands of band, choir and orchestra students from a five-state area. The EIS band received some impressive accolades from judges: an overall superior rating for beginner/elementary bands and outstanding band of the day for the beginner/elementary group. The superior rating is the highest possible rating at the event. The EIS band performed “American Spirit March” by John Higgins and “Tambora!” by William Owens. “We were very impressed with their focus and performance,” said Eric Guerrero, EIS band teacher. “Just as amazing as their performance was their behavior. HILTON SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE RINGS IN 10 YEARS If you reflect back on all the events, galas and celebrations you attended in Southlake over the past decade, chances are many of them unfolded at the Hilton Southlake Town Square. This month marks the luxury boutique-style hotel’s 10th anniversary. With general manager Mike Hutchison at the helm, the Hilton Southlake has provided stylish sophistication and Texas hospitality to locals and travelers alike. The hotel has grown tremendously from its opening night with seven rooms booked and a 2.8-percent occupancy. In January 2017, the Hilton passed the one-million mark of hotel guests. It’s also among the top 10 hotels in Tarrant County in terms of revenue-generated room sales. Over the past 10 years, the hotel has accrued some impressive awards, including a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor and recognition as an Expedia Insiders’ Select hotel. In 2014, the Hilton Southlake ranked first in customer service scores with Hilton Americas, and in the last decade, the hotel has never ranked outside the top 10. Hutchison is especially proud of the customer service awards. “They reflect the great effort the team put forth in welcoming people to Southlake,” he says. Copeland’s of New Orleans, the Cajun-Creole restaurant situated inside the Hilton, has also garnered acclaim. Copeland’s was named Restaurant of the Year in 2012 and received the highest customer service award in 2016. Behind the scenes, the Hilton Southlake team is like a family. Thirty-five of the Hilton’s original employees are still part of the team 10 years later. Hutchison says the current staff is between 220 and 235 employees each year. It’s the people that make his job rewarding. “With the team at the Hilton, we have been able to make many events from weddings and birthdays to fundraisers and corporate events special to those who plan them and those who attend them,” says Hutchison.

When asked what her greatest inspiration is, Wynne says, “Helping people achieve their goals, whether selling or buying. A home is where families make memories, and I love being a part of that process with my clients.” The difference with Wynne Moore Group is that Wynne focuses on matching buyers with

homes ideally suited for their particular lifestyles. Because she knows Southlake and the surrounding areas so well, homeowners can trust her to expertly market their homes and find qualified buyers that are a perfect match. In 2015 Wynne and Perry decided to expand their team and invited two highly qualified professionals to join them, John Martini and Tonia Beard. In 2017 Patricia Blakemore joined, as well. Each of these team members were carefully selected for not only their superb real estate knowledge, but also their integrity and business ethics. As a team with five members now, the Wynne Moore Group has over 50 years of cumulative real estate expertise.

Moore Group specializes in walking clients from the initial planning phase to build-out, all the while giving clients the utmost attention and specialized service. When it comes to selling a home, the Wynne Moore Group simplifies the process. The team will help by performing a comparable market analysis to determine the most appropriate price, provide home staging advice and suggest landscape changes to draw buyers in, advertise your home through a variety of methods such as local publications and online MLS® listings, help you understand contract contingencies and details of the closing process, handle the paperwork for you, and help you get the best price the market will allow. When Wynne and Perry are not helping clients buy and sell real estate, they love spending time with their four sons. “My biggest motivator is knowing that we have four kids to put through college,” Wynne says with a laugh. “More than anything else, I’m so proud of my children.” She is also proud of her community, as she is actively involved in the Gateway Church of Southlake and helps raise money for Christ’s Haven for Children and PKD. She also serves on the Southlake Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. At the end of the day, Wynne and Perry Moore enjoy their jobs because they love helping people achieve their goals of buying and selling their homes. The two pieces of wisdom Wynne lives by come from James 1:19, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” and living and working beyond the Golden Rule by treating clients the way their clients want to be treated. The continual referrals and repeat business that the Wynne Moore Group receives is a testament to the Moores’ passion for other people. “My most rewarding moment was when a client told me, with tears in her eyes, how she was now in her dream home because I had found it for her, as it was not on the market,” says Wynne. Let the Wynne Moore Group help you find or build the home of your dreams as well, so you can start living your happily ever after faster and easier than ever before.

My most rewarding moment was when a client told me, with tears in her eyes, how she was now in her dream home because I had found it for her, as it was not on the market. The Wynne Moore Group prides itself on representing buyers and sellers. They will help a variety of buyers find their new homes, since they always feature many different types of listings and price points. The team takes care of it all, from helping you get financing, guiding you to local neighborhoods, helping you determine your budget and prioritizing a list of essential features for your next home. After you’ve found your dream home, they will look at comparable properties in the area to determine a fair purchase offer, and then negotiate on your behalf with the seller. All you have to do is pack and prepare to move in! Buyers can also purchase land and then custom build a home. Because of Wynne’s developer experience and Perry’s building experience, they are knowledgeable about home materials, structure, architecture, style and amenities. Their background qualifies them to expertly match homebuyers with builders, which also helps with resale value. The Wynne

SOUTHLAKE CARROLL’S SWIM AND DIVE TEAMS REMAIN FORCES TO BE RECKONED WITH

BY LORI STACY

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

40,000-square-foot building with a state-of-the-art pool, the Carroll ISD Aquatics Center is an impressive facility. It’s not hard to imagine training young athletes for state championships here. That’s exactly what the coach of the Southlake Carroll High School swim team did a little more than 15 years ago. Before Kevin Murphy knew he would coach here, he and his wife visited the Aquatics Center while he was coaching another team. Says Coach Murphy of the prophetic occasion, “I walked into this [facility] and said, ‘God, why don’t I ever end up in a place like this?’” A few years later, in 2005, his prayer was answered. The veteran swim coach (Murphy has coached for more than 38 years) found himself at the Aquatics Center as head coach of the Southlake JUN 17 • 29

i Carroll High School swim team with an edict from former athletic director Ronnie Tipps to help strengthen and grow the program as it moved from Class 4A to 5A division. “What I liked about this place,” Coach Murphy says, “was there were good swimmers at the top. I wanted to coach up the middle and bottom.” His strategy worked. Since 2005, the Southlake Carroll swim team has won six Class 5A Division State Championships and, now having moved into the 6A division, the Dragons continue to be victorious, winning this year’s Class 6A State Championships. Since 2011, the boys’ team has not lost a state champion30 • JUN 17

ship meet—amassing more consecutive state wins than any other Carroll sport. And swimming isn’t the only sport making a splash in the CISD Aquatics Center; the Southlake Carroll dive team has seen its share of success, including freshman Bridget O’Neil’s winning this year’s state championship and SMU-bound senior Katie Crown taking third, even after enduring various injuries during much of her high school career. At the helm of the dive team is Coach Carolyn Hryorchuk, who has taught for 20 years and coached for 10, a few of which included coaching her own daughter, Taylor, who went on to dive with the University of SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Both coaches, too, realize that part of what makes the swim and dive teams so strong is having good relationships with the club teams that feed into the programs.

worth noting The Dragon swim and dive teams have been undefeated in district competition since 2006

The Dragons have been regional champs since 2010

The Dragons boys’ swim team won their seventh-consecutive state title in 2017

At the 2017 state meet, the Dragon boys’ swim team set a 6A record with 327 points— more than double the second-place team

Arkansas Razorbacks. She credits the athletes’ commitment and dedication as reasons for the dive team’s success. “They are willing to go beyond the call,” Coach Hryorchuk says of her divers. “They take a lot of pride in our tradition and continue that tradition to work together as a team.” Crown, who has been in the program all four of her high school years, concurs. “I believe our program is one of the best in the state because of our strong support system,” she says. “We push one another to be the best we can and to perform to the best of our capabilities.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

PARTNERING TO PROPEL AHEAD Swim programs such as the North Texas Nadadores (NTN), the Stingrays (a city-run parks and recreation department) and the Timarron Tiger Sharks develop swimmers and have a symbiotic relationship with the high school program. They’ve also produced some of the country’s top-tier talent—2016 Summer Olympics gold medalist Katie Meili was a member of NTN. The connection between the swim team and the North Texas Nadadores, in particular, has helped create stronger swimmers by sharing philosophy and methods while enabling dedicated swimmers the opportunity to train year-round. “For a team to be competitive in the Texas State 6A meet, they must have a full stable of committed USA year-round swimmers,” says Coach Murphy. “Without that foundation, there is absolutely no chance of fielding a superior high school swim team at the 6A level. The Carroll High School/NTN cooperative relationship is the foundation of our swimming success.” For diving, Coach Hryorchuk stresses that the relationship the Carroll dive team has with local club GC Divers has played an important role in developing the divers, and that starts with the strong bond Hryorchuk has with the head of GC Divers, Krista Klein. “We have respect for each other, we are committed as coaches and we communicate,” Coach Hryorhuk says of her rapport with Klein. “We focus on making it the best for every athlete.” Because school dive and club dive seasons don’t overlap, divers can train hard year-round without competing at both levels simultaneously. But the extra dive time that club diving gives these athletes is crucial. As with swimming, for most of the kids at this level to move onto state, they must have extra training, says Coach Hryorchuk. Coach Murphy, who swam in high school and college, knows firsthand the level of dedication swimming requires. To put it bluntly, “It’s an awful sport; it’s hard, it takes time,” Murphy says. It requires swimming twice a day to make the jump from “pretty good” to contend at the state meet level. And not every student who comes through his program wants to do that. “Some kids have a passion for it; some kids are just glad to be here on the varsity team,” he says. A DRAGON EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE Another factor that has led to the team’s success is spelling out the goals at the start of the season—in writing—so that everyone knows the expectation and can take the necessary steps to get there. This year, one of the girls’ swim team goals was to be in the top three in the State 6A meet; the team came in third. The boys’ swim team set a goal to come in first in the state meet, which they did. Not only are there team goals, but the student athletes are also asked to develop a personal goal for the program. JUN 17 • 31

“We set goals to motivate the kids,” says Coach Murphy, who adds that the student leaders on the team also play an important role in motivating the kids. “These kids are talented and put in a tremendous amount of time,” he adds. Coach Hryorchuk, too, relies on goal-setting to motivate the divers. “This year’s goal was to have a diver in the top three in state,” she says, and O’Neil and Crown more than delivered, bringing in first and third, respectively. For next year? Coach Hryorchuk wants the team to have an undefeated record for the season. It’s a challenge for these kids to not only meet the swim and dive team goals but to be successful in school as well, and to that extent, to be better people. Crown knows all too well that what she has learned throughout her years in diving reaches far beyond the sport. “I was able to find my passion for leadership. When I was able to get back on board, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the encouragement of Coach Hryorchuk,” says Crown. “She has had such a positive impact on my life and has taught me many life lessons— one being to never give up on something you love.” A strong community and parent support have also been instrumental in the winning seasons both coaches have seen. To that end, Coach Murphy says he relies on keeping the lines of communication open with parents. “I try to make sure parents are fully informed of everything we are trying to do,” he says, adding that it helps when the community supports not only the schools but the athletic programs as well.

“It’s a good community for athletics,” he says. In a sense, the athletic programs are good for the community as well. Not only do the state champion swim and dive teams instill a sense of community pride, but the facility that has been so good for them is open to the community as well. On any given day, the center is open for lap swimming, water aerobics and lessons for children as young as six months old. No doubt future Dragons occupy the lanes, and no doubt Southlake Carroll’s swim and dive teams will see yet more regional and state championship wins.

here’s a new camera on the market that has everybody talking, and if Dad is a videography enthusiast, he’ll want to hear what people are saying. The 360fly has catapulted 360-degree filming to an all-new height with the 360fly 4K HD Video Camera and accompanying Livit mobile software app, allowing him to capture a video and then send the footage straight to the app on his phone. Although 360fly has manufactured previous versions of the 360-degree camera, the 4K HD adaptation produces by far the best quality images. This tech gadget has a brilliantly designed, orb-inspired body casing that is lightweight, extremely durable and waterproof in depths up to 130 feet. Whether Dad is perfecting his cannonball in the backyard pool or snorkeling in the Caribbean, it’ll capture any underwater adventure. The compact camera can be mounted to virtually any surface, whether you stick it on a skateboard, surfboard or bike helmet. It’s designed

with a quarter-inch screw on the bottom for a tripod and other mounting accessories, some of which are magnetic for easy point-of-view shooting as well as overall swivel maneuverability. With this device, users have the option to shoot first-person point of view, 360-degree shots or time-lapse filming. Think of the lens as a fly’s eye: Multiple visual receptors capture imagery at 50 frames per second, and with 360fly’s Livit software, the result is an incredibly realistic, crisp and exciting 360-degree video experience. Once Dad has captured 4K video of himself shooting a massive curl on his surfboard or witnessing an incredible view of New York City from atop the Empire State Building, he’ll probably want his social media followers to know about it. The 360fly 4K makes it easy. He can edit and share videos in less than two minutes. The camera comes with its own editing software, 360 Director, which allows him to post videos directly to Facebook, YouTube and Instagram from his smartphone. The 360fly 4K HD Video Camera brings voyages to life in a brilliant 4K, instantly shareable format that just might make Dad—or any adventure seeker—the next YouTube sensation.

Reclaim the Garage

eighborhood homes typically feature garages that should provide ample space for the two-vehicle family as well as bikes, kids’ sports equipment and the requisite workbench/paintcan shelf. But over time, the paraphernalia begins to encroach on the Escalade and, before he knows it, Dad is parking in the driveway. It’s time to reclaim the garage and return the space to its intended purposes. And, in the process, discover how cool and efficient your home’s storage space can actually be.

FIRST THINGS FIRST Before tackling an update or renovation of your garage, determine your budget. From there you can prioritize your goals for the best method to corral your messy mess. Then a day of organization is in order. Toss the trash, banish the broken sports equipment and donate toys and treasures your household no longer uses. All of it! After the dust has settled (and the tears dried over the scooter someone can’t believe you gave away), you are ready for action. Make a list of your goals. Do you want to create better storage? Get the bikes up and out of the way? Do you need an organization system for sports gear? Would you like an assembly that can be added onto as your budget allows? Do you have the time and patience for a DIY project or does a professional install seem the only way to go? FIND A PRO Like many home improvement projects that seem like an easy weekend job, installing an efficient garage storage system can be

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

quite a chore. Companies that specialize in garage renovations, like GarageExperts in North Fort Worth, can design and customize products to best suit your needs, saving you time and successive trips to the home improvement store. Plus, garage pros can best address your design questions and even refinish your floor to the envy of everyone on the block. Expect to explore a variety of storage options—from open shelving to custom cabinets. When it comes to hard-to-corral items such as garden tools and unwieldy sporting equipment, a slat-wall system with relocatable hooks, hangers, baskets and bins should get the job done. Also be sure to address your fifth wall: the ceiling. It’s the perfect place to install a storage system for seldom-used items such as Christmas décor and ladders. Once you’ve transformed the garage into a space that’s clean and well-organized, don’t forget about safety. Get your garage door inspected by a pro; ensure sensors work properly and your spring is in good shape. A fire extinguisher should be within easy reach (which you know how to use) plus smoke and carbon dioxide detectors installed. You might also update lighting and place sensors to let you know when you’ve pulled your vehicle in far enough. Finally, consider covering stained or cracked concrete floor with an epoxy finish. Not only will your garage look like a dealership showroom, but the surface will also be durable and easy to clean. And the next time your block party gets rained out, move the festivities into your garage without thinking twice.

AVOID THE SUMMER DOLDRUMS WITH THESE FIVE OUTSIDE-THE-BOX DESTINATIONS

by Stacy Zimmerman

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

H

ow many times during the summer do we hear kids moan, “I’m bo-o-ored!” or the whining, “There’s nothing to do-oo!” and the dreaded, “Are we there yet?” Parents, take heart. We’ve assembled a list of megafun, totally un-boring (and some slightly quirky) sites to see with the fam within the DFW Metroplex. Skip the long, hot, boring car rides with your cranky, fidgety offspring and their squibblings. These attractions are so close, you’re practically there already. Side note: Not all the attractions are for kids only [wink!]. WILD, WILD WEST END That’s right, the historic West End district of Downtown Dallas has still got it, with fun events such as Taste of Dallas in July or the summer-long West End Block Party Series. Most daytime events are family- and pedestrianfriendly, so put on everyone’s comfy shoes and hit the streets for some fun. The one attraction that really gets and keeps the kids’ (and adults’) attention is the theatrical and performing artists located in the district. Be sure to catch “The Art of Spray” by the street artist known only as Cosmo. Groove along to loud, thumping techno dance tracks at the corner of Corbin and Market streets, and watch Cosmo use spray paint and random objects to create astonishing and unexpected pieces of art. Cosmo has been a West End favorite since 1995, when he started with a beat-up boom box and a few cans of spray paint. Now his show is a full-blown dramatic, must-see production! Parents who grew up admiring his work now 20 years later are bringing their kids to watch Cosmo paint. His original art can be purchased onsite, or prints of his creations sell for cheap and make perfect West End Dallas souvenirs. Within the 75202 zip code, but more for adults, is the House of Blues, located in the historic White Swan building where the West End meets Victory Park. This year is a milestone for this Dallas landmark as the House of Blues celebrates its 25th anniversary with a 365-day party at the House! The House of Blues sits calm and laid back unobtrusively during daylight hours but comes alive when the sun goes down and doesn’t let up until the wee hours of the morning. The crowd at HOB varies depending on which band is playing that night, such as Everclear or Aerosmith. Even the Irish mosh thrashers Flogging Molly have performed here. No matter who headlines, you are in for one wild ride the second you pass through those neon lights and swinging glass doors. Usually there’s a funky mix of blues and rock jams, sometimes a little country thrown in; even local bands can get lucky and make it on stage on an open mic night from time to time. If there’s a particular genre of music you love, go to the HOB’s website and JUN 17 • 61

Undeterred by the unexplainable, your children will enjoy browsing every nook and cranny of Ripley’s as if taken back in time to the original discovery that led to the enigmatic specimen arriving there, in Grand Prairie, just so we could all be simultaneously enticed and disgusted by it. In fact, it’s highly recommended that you take as many photos as possible of your children standing with their favorite exhibits. Strangely, this is likely to be one of their most treasured childhood memories. Don’t be the Mom who didn’t bring her camera into Ripley’s. Just don’t. This is one venue you do not want to miss. Tickets and passes to events can be purchased individually or as a package deal for a discounted rate. ALL ABOARD THE COTTON BELT TRAIN For the train enthusiast in your life, the Cotton Belt Depot is home to actual vintage Grapevine Railroad locomotives from the 1920s and ’30s. These aren’t replicas and they sure as anything are not the zoo train! There are two trains: Puffy, an 1896 steam engine and the oldest running locomotive in the entire Southern United States, isn’t anticipated to be operational this summer, but will be back in service in 2018. In the meantime, Vinny, a GP-7 diesel engine that has been running since 1953, is up to the task of running the rails. These authentic railroad locomotive trains are maintained and housed at the downtown Grapevine Station, just as they have been for nearly 100 years. Unlike the view from the back seat of a minivan, this train ride delivers something much different. It is a locomotive, heavy and strong that travels along real wood and steel railroad tracks laid across the Texas terrain, worlds away from freeway interchanges or congested tollways. What kids will see instead are Grapevine Station and the surrounding historic area on Main Street; an authentic vintage locomotive that you get to actually ride in and experience firsthand; and part of Fort Worth that possesses true Texas charm. The main attraction is the train ride along the original Cotton Belt Route, which runs about 27 miles between Grapevine Station on Main Street in Grapevine and to the Stockyard Station in Fort Worth. During summer months, the train departs Friday through Sunday at 1 p.m. and arrives in Fort Worth at about 2:20 p.m. Passengers debark the train and have time to take part in one of many activities in downtown Fort Worth before boarding the train at 4:05 p.m. and making the journey back to Grapevine Station. The journey ends upon arrival in Grapevine around 5:45 p.m. While at the Stockyards, grab a bite to eat at one of the many charming restaurants or cafes and be sure to explore the Cowtown Cattlepen Maze. The perch above the maze allows parents to keep an eye on their wandering kiddos and provides a great place to take photos. It’s an all-day affair and perfect for anyone who loves trains, trains and more trains. MOMMY, CAN I PET HIM? What a joy to watch a child’s face light up the first time he reaches out to pet a live farm animal. Whether it’s a baby goat nibbling feed from his hands or perhaps a baby duckling following him around, SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

the animals at Fritz Park Petting Farm have made it possible for parents to capture precious memories with their families since 1970. The farm is open only June through July (closed on Mondays) and weather permitting, of course. If you grew up near the Irving farm, you now have the opportunity to bring your own offspring back to the same Fritz’s Farm you loved as a child. Fritz’s Park Petting Farm provides the perfect safe and controlled environment to allow kiddos to connect with domesticated critters such as goats, chickens, deer, lambs, rabbits and even tamed giant turkeys. The park is well-shaded and suitable for guests of all ages. The farmhands take every possible question a kid can throw at them and turn it into a teaching moment about farm life, for people and animals both who spend their entire lives on farms. Fritz’s Park Petting Farm is a longtime Dallas favorite and surely will be for even more generations to come. Be sure to tag your photos #SummerStyleDFW on social media so we can see your adventures. he next time you spend the day strolling the lush gardens of the Dallas Arboretum, don’t head for home before discovering a nearby foodie destination. Venture directly across the street to Smoky Rose, one of Dallas’ newest culinary gems. With its laidback garden setting and enticing menu options, the chef-driven smokehouse and restaurant is just the place to relax on a summer afternoon. Comfortable but elegant, the restaurant merges the best aspects of a smokehouse with all the creativity and flavor of a chef-driven kitchen. The result is an inspired, barbecue-centric menu that offers the best of both worlds: classic barbecue and composed entrées. Craving a saucy slab of pork ribs? Or how about a light, fresh salad piled high with smoked turkey or salmon? The choice

is up to you. This unique blend is what sets Smoky Rose apart in Dallas’ ever-evolving food scene. “[We offer] world-class barbecue for the most discriminating barbecue fans along with chef-inspired creations for every taste and preference,” says pitmaster Mike Sharp. A native Texan, Sharp operates by the barbecue mantra that “if you’re lookin’, you ain’t cookin.’” He believes that barbecue should be smoky, moist and tender. He loves to dig into some barbecue chicken, but when he’s cooking, brisket is his thing. “It’s not for the novice pitmaster,” Sharp says. “Every brisket is a challenge to perfect.” At Smoky Rose, the brisket is darn near perfect. The lean beef boasts a thin bark on

top with a subtle smokiness in each bite. Each brisket is a labor of love for Tyler Hutt, also a pitmaster at the smokehouse. “It takes hundreds if not thousands of briskets cooked before you figure out the nuances and techniques required,” he says. “The relationship and passion between man and meat is what makes barbecue great.” When an urge for barbecue beckons, Smoky Rose offers plenty of variety; the menu is loaded with brisket, pulled pork, chicken, turkey, ribs and house-made sausage. Order by the half-pound and make it a meal with a heaping side of gourmet comfort food. We love Smoky Rose’s sophisticated approach to the classics such as coleslaw, potato salad, and macaroni and cheese, which is made with a gouda béchamel cheese sauce and panko crumbs. The deviled eggs, a family recipe of executive chef David “Spoon” Gauthier, is the house favorite. The yolks are whipped and creamy, and beet juice gives the entire appetizer a lovely pink hue. You’ll definitely want to post on Instagram before you pop one of these beauties in your mouth. Chef Spoon, who acquired his nickname when he was a cook in the United States Army, doesn’t do bland and boring—it’s not the Texas way. “Currently, I’m drawing culinary inspiration from simply being in Dallas,” he says. “The flavors are different here. They’re bigger and bolder, and I’ve been finding the balance between here and from where I moved in Tennessee.” He particularly enjoys cooking with flavor-packed turmeric and includes the ingredient in even the most surprising of places: the house-made pickles. Everything on the menu, though, is a delight for the taste buds. Chef Spoon learned from his Italian grandmother to play with food and be creative. He’s doing just that at Smoky Rose, adjusting the menu as the seasons change, and continuously rotating the types of steak used in his kitchen. “The Smokehouse Steak dish is my favorite to prepare,” he says, “because I get to be creative with the plating.” The ’cue might get you here, but Smoky Rose is much more than just smoked meats. The restaurant offers more than 15 domestic craft beers on tap, an impressive wine list and a handful of craft cocktails that Sharp says are quickly developing a following of their own. The sprawling covered patio, surrounded by beautiful blooms, will certainly inspire you to order a glass of something cold and relax for a bit. The Smoky Rose (with Gompers gin, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, strawberries and fresh lemon juice) is cool refreshment. On the sweet side of the menu, we recommend staying true to Texas with an order of the Chocolate Pecan Pie. It’s served with a Bulleit bourbon glaze, as if an unadorned slice wasn’t tempting enough. Smoky Rose is a restaurant that’s uniquely fancy and relaxed, with a menu that aims to please every palate. Pull up a chair on the massive outdoor patio and prepare for some of the best barbecue in Big D.

A Big Bowl of Awesomeness Vitality Bowls puts a superfood spin on mealtimes

VITALITY BOWLS 5615 Colleyville Boulevard, Suite 420 Colleyville 682.325.4372 VitalityBowls.com

70 • JUN 17

An entire eatery dedicated to superfoods? Vitality Bowls, you shouldn’t have. But we’re so glad you did. The Colleyville café offers refreshing nourishment by the spoonful with its handcrafted açaí bowls, a thick, creamy blend of the Amazon’s antioxidant-rich açaí berry. Each bowl is piled to the brim with superfoods such as chia seeds, goji berries and bee pollen. Step aside yogurt—a freshly prepared açaí bowl is our new favorite way to start the day. Vitality Bowls operates with one purpose: to feed bodies the food of life. Keeping this mission in mind, the café steers clear of artificial preservatives and trans fats and doesn’t add fillers such as ice, sugar or frozen yogurt. The result? The pure taste of good-foryou foods. Each bite is a flavor-packed explosion of fruits and veggies that tastes indulgent but is blissfully and wonderfully healthful. The menu features an impressive variety of açaí bowls such as the Tropical Bowl (with mango, pineapple, coconut milk and flaxseed, among a handful of other wholesome ingredients) and the Green Bowl (made with ingredients such as kale, kiwi and hemp seeds). We’re partial, naturally, to the Dragon Bowl. Grab a spoon and dig into this nutrient-packed bowl bursting with pitaya, strawberries, almonds and goji berries. The blended pitaya is consistently creamy, and the strawberries taste as if they’ve been plucked straight from the garden. Almonds add delightful texture and crunch—and protein. The açaí bowls are the star of the show at Vitality Bowls, but the café also offers made-to-order smoothies and juices along with house-made paninis, salads and soups that will lure you back for lunch. You’ll feel good about ordering anything from the menu—the turkey and sirloin prepared for salads and sandwiches are hormone-free and all-natural, with no preservatives or nitrates. The Roasted Turkey Panini (with mozzarella, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, Dijon and pesto) is a great grab-and-go lunch. Running around with the kids on the weekend? Stop in for a quick, healthy bite. The kids’ menu offers a kids’ bowl, smoothie and grilled cheese sandwich along with sensible beverages such as orange carrot juice and nonfat milk. If you’re committed to eating clean, Vitality Bowls provides an oasis. But it’s a delicious destination even for part-time health enthusiasts. Whether you want a nourishing breakfast or a quick pick-me-up, Vitality Bowls will leave you happy, healthy and satisfied.

HOW DADS AND DAUGHTERS BOND THROUGH THE INDIAN PRINCESS EXPERIENCE

I

f you ask many local fathers of young daughters, they will tell you they’re part of a tribe— and more specifically, a tribe in the Indian Princess program. Southlake resident Ronnie Cook, of the Cheyenne tribe, is one such dad. He’s been part of the father/daughter organization for four years with his daughters, Alexis (10), and Geneva (8). As the incoming assistant chief for the 18-tribe-strong Yo-He-Wah Nation (the DFW/North Tarrant County chapter of the national program), he’s moving up the totem pole, too. Cook encourages dads to check out this unique program that forges a lasting bond between fathers and daughters.

I JOINED THE INDIAN PRINCESS PROGRAM BECAUSE: I wanted to go fishing and camping like I did with my dad growing up. Having two girls, there weren’t many organizations that filled that niche. There are many dad/son and mom/daughter opportunities, but the bonding experience between dads and daughters is extremely important. THROUGH THE PROGRAM, DADS AND DAUGHTERS GET TO: do a little bit of everything. We build rockets, go to hockey games and go camping, among many other activities. There’s an event on the calendar once a month where we devote 100 percent of our attention to our girls. It’s important because many times, as dads, we get busy and it’s hard to slow down. CAMPOUTS ARE ESPECIALLY UNIQUE BECAUSE: we have so many families that we take up an entire state park. It’s great. When I was a kid, I’d get on my bike and explore in the woods. It’s hard to let kids explore today, but camping provides a safer environment so kids can get out in nature. We have four daddy/ daughter campouts and one family campout each year. ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVENTS IS: the annual Sweetheart Dance in February. It’s a formal event so everyone dresses up. We get to show the girls how we would want boys to treat them. We get to instill in them what a proper date is and show them a really nice time. INDIAN PRINCESS TRIBES ARE BASED ON: region and friendships. Most people join through word of mouth—their daughters’ friends. In the Cheyenne tribe, most families are from Southlake,

so the girls see each other and play nonstop. If dads/daughters don’t know anybody when they register, they can be matched in a tribe from their elementary school. AN ADDED BENEFIT OF PARTICIPATING: is developing friendships with other dads. You see the same group of people every month, so it’s a great way to form new friendships. When we go camping, there are no cell phones. We’re outside, cooking s’mores, playing games, riding bikes—we all really look forward to it. THROUGH INDIAN PRINCESS, I GET TO: seize the opportunity to spend time with my girls. When they grow up to be women, they will be able to do mother/son or mother/daughter activities, but nothing like this. BEHIND THE SCENES, THE INDIAN PRINCESS PROGRAM: operates like a well-oiled machine. Everything is volunteer-based. We have dads who are lawyers, accountants—you name it. These guys believe so much in the program that they invest a lot of time to make the events happen. If everybody does a little piece, nobody has to do a ton. MY INDIAN NAME: was chosen by my kids. They picked Stinky Catfish. Alexis’ name is Singing Bluebird and Geneva’s name is Little Kitten. Everybody gets a patch to put on their vest after each event, and my vest has a catfish on it. It’s fun. The vest is a neat keepsake because they can look at it and see all the events they attended with their dad. THE BEST PART OF IT ALL: is spending time with my daughters and building lasting memories. There is such a short window of time when girls want to be really involved with their dads. Just being able to hang out with them—those memories are irreplaceable. Indian Princess gives dads an environment and opportunity to show our daughters how much we love them.

The Magic of Matilda The endearing children’s classic comes to life in Fort Worth

W

hen you take a little girl with an extraordinary brain and precocious powers and give her a set of ridiculously challenging circumstances, she finds a way to not only overcome her difficulties, but to elevate others to change their lives, too. Matilda sets out to lead a minirevolution and changes her destiny fueled by ideas, dreams and the gumption of youth. So goes the inspiring plot of Matilda-The Musical, the awe-inspiring Broadway hit based on the novel by Roald Dahl that has won 50 international music awards, including four Tony Awards. The show, which ended its Broadway run in January, is completing its first coast-to-coast tour with an amazing cast of children and adults who bring the wellloved novel to life. The show plays at Fort Worth’s magnificent Bass Hall between June 13 and 18 with tickets starting at $45. The soundtrack is reason enough to find your way to the Bass for Matilda. Hits like “Revolting Children,” “When I Grow Up,” “Naughty” and “Miracle” will have you singing along! The original story, published by Roald Dahl in 1988, won the Children’s Book Award in 1999 and has been adapted into an audio reading by Kate Winslet, a 1996 feature film and a BBC radio program, plus has been performed on Broadway since 2013. The musical production has won the most Oliver Awards of any show and has toured in the United Kingdom, Australia and now the United States after beginning as a staple for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. The show will run for six days at Bass Hall, so don’t miss your chance to meet Matilda.

Taking on the World Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull collaborate for an unstoppable tour

W

hat do you get when you put together a Latin crooner and a Cuban-American rapper? The mix of Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull-The Rapper might seem like an improbable duo at first, but the two superstars toured together a few years ago and collaborated on Pitbull’s single “Messin’ Around” from his latest album, “Climate Change.” Now, they’re coming to American Airlines Center for a joint concert that’s worthy of dressing up for a night of dancing and singing along. The heartthrob and the tuxedo-clad rap star are sweeping the country and land in Dallas on June 16. Since his 1995 debut, Enrique Iglesias has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Once his first English-language recording, “Bailamos,” reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts, his popularity in America skyrocketed. Son of Latin superstar Julio Iglesias, Enrique followed his initial success in the United States with other Englishlanguage hits such as “Be With You,” “Hero” and “I Like It.” So far, he has

logged 27 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Latin Songs Chart. Pitbull, also known as Armando Christian Perez, released “Climate Change,” his 10th album, in March. The Cuban-American rapper has teamed up in the past with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Kesha, Shakira and Usher. The upcoming Latin boy band CNCO will open for the pair, and tickets are available through all the usual channels with prices starting at $39—basically a bargain for so much soul.

Explore Nature’s Majesty FROM GLACIERS TO CACTI, SEE AMERICA’S VAST BEAUTY AT THESE NATIONAL PARKS

W

hen planning your next family vacation, instead of searching for swimming pools and rollercoasters to entertain your troop, think road trips and camping, hiking and picnicking. Visiting one or two of America’s 400-plus national parks can give your family a much-needed respite from run-of-the-mill summer destinations.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve One of the largest national parks in Alaska, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve occupies a vast area—3.3 million acres to be exact—of southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. The national park is located 65 miles northwest of Juneau in the small town of Gustavus. Since the town is only accessible by plane or boat, you can catch a flight, take the ferry or charter a boat to reach the park.

88 • JUN 17

Home to the park headquarters, the visitor center, a lodge and restaurant, and a campground, Bartlett Cove is 10 miles from Gustavus. The cove, which lies within Glacier Bay Park, is the starting point for forest and riverside trails. On land, Glacier Bay boasts a large bear population, both brown and black. But it’s not the bears to watch out for. Although moose are captivating creatures to observe, it’s best to keep a safe distance from this massive land-lover as well. While hiking and offshore sightseeing is limited to the Bartlett Cove area, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what you can see and do. Marine waters make up almost one-fifth of the park, which is home to the endangered humpback whale, orcas, threatened Stellar sea lions and sea otters. Most of the park’s activities are water-centered. Kayaking, river rafting, fishing, whale watching and glacier viewing are all popular. Tourist season runs from late May through early September, peaking in July. Although open the rest of the year, the park’s visitor services are extremely limited—meaning you are on your own. If you love a rainy day, you’re in luck; the park’s forecast generally calls for an abundance of the wet stuff. Waterproof boots, rain gear,

Saguaro National Park Although considered one park, Saguaro National Park in Arizona is actually split into two districts, each on either side of the city of Tucson, in the middle of the Sonoran desert. Home to the world’s largest cacti—the giant saguaro—Tucson sits between the two districts of Saguaro National Park, the Tucson Mountain District on the west and the Rincon Mountain District on the east. Thirty miles separates the two parts, and while each side may have cacti in common, when you set out to explore each district you’ll discover just how unique they are. On the west, the Tucson Mountain District features large stands of saguaro cactus, creating a forest of the enormous cacti. While in this district, you’ll want to visit the Signal Hill Picnic Area to view hundreds of ancient petroglyphs. On the east, the high altitudes of the Rincon Mountains make for great hiking and biking trails. Just be sure to stay away from the bears and cougars, which call this area home. In this district you’ll want to take a scenic car or bike ride around the Cactus Forest Loop Drive, which offers breathtaking views of the Rincon Mountains. The iconic symbol of the American southwest—the Saguaro—begins to bloom in late April with the fruits ripening in June and July. If you’re planning a trip this summer, it’s best to go early; August is monsoon season in the Sonoran desert. NPS.gov/sagu

Yosemite National Park One of the largest and oldest national parks in the United States, Yosemite National Park covers nearly 750,000 acres of land in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Open 24 hours per day 365 days per year, the park is more than just campgrounds and hiking trails. While there are roughly 800 miles of trails, the park is also a mecca for rock climbers. Lessons and guided tours for beginner to advanced climbers are offered. Waterfalls are some of Yosemite National Park’s biggest attractions. Thousands of cascades speckle the sides of mountains and granite formations. Of them, Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest (it features nearly a half-mile drop) in North America and ranks as fifth highest in the world. As national parks go, Yosemite is an experience. You can certainly rough it at one of 13 campgrounds or stay at a AAA four-diamond hotel. The Majestic Yosemite Hotel not only offers luxury accommodations, but fine dining as well. If you prefer picnicking to cheese plates and wine lists, you can choose from a variety of dining options throughout the park, which are open from sunup to sundown. NPS.gov/yose

Nancy, actual patient.

Nancy lost 54 pounds!† “I honestly never dreamed I would be wearing a size 4 at my age! Going from a tight size 12 to a comfortable size 4 feels amazing. I have more energy now than I did in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.

After a series of medical issues that all seemed to be made worse by being overweight, I decided to embark on yet another weight loss journey. Yes, I have been at this place many times since my teen years. I always seem to be successful at following a supervised program; however, I have failed every time on keeping the weight off. Not this time. What attracted me to the program was the fact it is physician supervised. They checked the medication I was currently on to make sure none of the supplements they provided would interact. I am the type of person that needs to be held accountable while losing weight. Medi-Weightloss® has wonderful counselors that help you every step of the way. When I talk to friends about the diet, occasionally someone will say they could never go without bread, potatoes and sugar. To those people I say, maybe you are just not ready to change your habits to a healthier lifestyle. This is a lifestyle change, but it is easy to do. When I embarked on my weight loss journey and set a goal to lose 40 pounds, I did not know if I could attain that goal. After 4 months, I had lost 40 pounds†, and felt fantastic! I stuck with it and lost another 14 pounds. Today, I am down 54 pounds† and I am in the maintenance phase. I feel confident that this is the new and permanent me. I vow never to go back to the unhealthy, overweight me again. Thanks to Medi-Weightloss® for being the one to finally help me learn what I should be eating to become and stay a healthier me!”
