That’s the Spirit! School is out therefore the baton of the daily routine is firmly handed back to us parents for a few months. The days are longer and that means it’s time for some summer fun—so let the pool parties, outdoor get-togethers and vacations commence! When I think about summer, I think about relaxing and recharging with family and friends. Driving with the top down, enjoying a ball game, a book , or watching the kids splash in the pool—life just seems a little bit sweeter this time of year. Perhaps it’s the rum? I would like to think I’m like many of you—when I relax, I like to do so responsibly with an adult beverage. So we’ve put in the legwork to make sure you start the summer off in the right fashion (or Old Fashioned if you prefer). From local happy hours and the cool summer cocktails that fuel them, to the new wave of Texas-based sprits and a sit down with Lee Applbaum at Patron’s Southlake headquarters—we’ve scoured the top shelves until our pages runneth over. Beverages inspire us, as do the pools we drink them by. In Southlake, the Claffey family has been designing and building pools for nearly 30 years. If you’re reading this issue by your own outdoor oasis, then there’s a high likelihood you owe some thanks to Paul, Brian, Charlie and Shelly, and the 70-plus employees at Claffey Pools. In the tech-era of doing business, theirs is a refreshingly nostalgic tale of the American spirit. The entrepreneurial Southlake family has worked hard, stuck together, and built a thriving company on the tenets of quality and customer service. The same entrepreneurial spirit that made the Claffeys so successful brings us to say a fond farewell to James Reid—our resident Foodie Fellow. For the last 18 months James kept our plates full of great dining options. We wish him well as he starts his own foodie-centric digital publication. We’ll be rooting for him, and some new restaurants along the way.

Yours in Southlake Style,

BEFORE THIS WORLD JAMES TAYLOR JUNE 16

Long Time Coming It has been 13 years since James Taylor released his last album, October Road, but waiting for the next release has been worth it. The 67-year-old artist is going back to his folk-style music roots from the 70s in Before This World, with nine original songs and one folk tune remake of “Wild Mountain Thyme,” featuring his wife and son as harmonists. Listening to this album, produced by Concord Music Group, you’ll hear the melodic sounds of keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and a special appearance by cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT JUDY BLUME JUNE 2

Adult Interest Blumes You probably are reminded of kids’ stories when you think of author Judy Blume (Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing). However, this award-winning author is picking up the pen again for her newest book In the Unlikely Event—her fir t adult novel in 16 years. Blume draws memories from her own past in this story about passenger airplane catastrophes in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in the early 1950s, causing people to worry about Communist threats. It’s a tale of fear, grief, love and friendship that overcomes all. Essentially, it is everything that has won the devotion of her fans through the years.

JURASSIC WORLD IN THEATRES JUNE 12

Should Have Left Well Enough Alone Remember that prehistoric time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and you saw it unfold in theatres? Now, more than 20 years since Jurassic Park was released, a lot has changed. In the series’ fourth movie, the story revolves around a once-popular dinosaur amusement park, Jurassic World, which is rapidly losing visitor interest. Owen Grady, played by Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), develops a genetically modified dinosaur—a Velociraptor—to re-spark visitor interest. Steven Spielberg returns as an executive producer of this action-packed movie that will bring you back to your fir t run-in with dinosaurs in 1993.

THE 69TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS CBS JUNE 7

Give Our Regards Broadway stars will take the stage again on Sunday, June 7, for the 69th Annual Tony Awards broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City. This year, it will be hosted by Emmy and Tony Award winner, Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown) and by Tony Award-winner and Golden Globe-nominated Alan Cumming (Cabaret, The Good Wife). Glamour, music and a fantastic show can be expected because, after all, nobody knows how to put on a better live performance than the stars of the stage themselves.

ABOUT ANYTHING, THERE’S ONLY ONE. The only Level III NICU in the area. A newborn is a joy. But for a few, it’s also a trying experience. Fortunately, one area hospital is prepared to deal with high-risk pregnancies and unexpected complications in cases of a premature or critically-ill infant. Five Sensational Drinks to Sip This Summer It’s hot out there. Kick back with one of these cold ones. It’s summertime. You’re thirsty. A tall glass of water has its place, but sometimes, what you really need is a well-crafted, refreshing cocktail to take the edge off a 100-plus-degree day. We’ve sipped and sampled our way through some of the area’s best drinks, and handpicked fi e you need to try. Kids have the ice-cream truck to get excited about this summer; you have these top-shelf libations. By Audrey Sellers

PASSIONFRUIT MOJITO Garnished with a bright slice of orange and fresh sprig of mint, Cheesecake Factory’s Passionfruit Mojito has a lovely summery vibe. This golden-hued drink is almost like a Southlake sunset captured in a glass. It’s pretty, y’all. And it’s oh-sorefreshing made with Captain Morgan, passion fruit, Cruzan Single Barrel Rum and mint. If you’re looking for a fresh take on the classic mojito, you’ll love this drink’s tropical twist. Cheesecake Factory Southlake

CHAMPAGNE MARGARITA The Champagne Margarita is part expertly crafted cocktail and part spectacle in a martini glass. Streaming dry ice makes this concoction a sight to see – and defini ely one to savor this summer. It starts with handsqueezed juices and 100 percent agave tequila from Mi Día’s grand tequila tower. The Jamaica version is made with hibiscus sorbet, Clase Azul Silver and StGermain; the Guava version is made with guava sorbet, Chinaco Silver and Veev. Both are topped off with Proseco. Consider this margarita a must-sip and a must-see. Mi Día From Scratch Grapevine

OCEAN TRUST TROPIC HEAT MARTINI It doesn’t just taste good – the Ocean Trust Tropic Heat Martini also does good. When you order up this sweet and spicy cocktail at Bonefish Grill, $1 is donated to Ocean Trust, an award-winning ocean conservation foundation. We’ll drink to that. This martini, as its name reveals, defini ely packs some sweet heat. It’s made with fresh pineapple that has been soaked in Absolut vodka for three days, muddled mango, lemon and a hint of jalapeño spice. Bonefish Grill Southlake

DRAGON PRIDE MARTINI Just the name alone got us excited to taste the new favorite at Il Calabrese. We’ll try anything with the words “Dragon Pride” in it. This martini didn’t disappoint. It’s simple, sweet, and of course, it’s green. A mixture of Malibu, Midori liquor (which gives the drink its Dragon green hue) and pineapple juice are shaken together and topped off with soda. Bartenders crafted it especially for a party, and it was so well received that they gave the Dragon Pride Martini a permanent spot on the menu. It’s also part of $5 martini night every Thursday from 4 p.m. to close. If you have Dragon Pride (and you’re at least 21), you’ve got to try this one. Il Calabrese Southlake

BAYOU BELLE When you take a sip of the beautifully vibrant Bayou Belle, you feel as if you should be lounging on a beach somewhere – not perched at the bar at Copeland’s (although that’s not a bad spot to be). This martini has all the fl vors of summer. And by fl vors, we mean pineapple. It’s made with Cruzan Pineapple Rum, Island Blue Pucker and pineapple. If you love a great tropical-tasting drink, don’t miss the Bayou Belle. Copeland’s Southlake

A look at 10 top-shelf liquors that hail from the Lone Star State

1. Firestone & Robertson Whiskey, Fort Worth, Texas In a reclaimed, Prohibition-era warehouse south of downtown Fort Worth sits Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. It’s the only artisanal bourbon whiskey distillery in North Texas.

2. Dripping Springs Vodka, Dripping Springs, Texas Mineral-rich, artesian spring water gives Dripping Springs Vodka its refreshing signature fl vor. It’s handcrafted in small, 50-gallon batches using handmade copper pot stills.

A lot of great things come from Texas: the Cowboys, George Strait, Tex-Mex. The Lone Star State also produces a remarkably impressive roundup of alcohol. Consider one of these local liquors to add a taste of Texas to your drinks this summer.

3. Balcones Texas Single Malt Whisky, Waco, Texas An old welding shop under Waco’s 17th Street Bridge is home to Balcones. Its creators have had a hand in everything – from hammering and welding the stills to handwriting the batch number on each bottle.

4. Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Austin, Texas Tito Beveridge, founder of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, wanted to create “a vodka so smooth that women would drink it straight.” Well, he did it – and more. Tito’s has garnered worldwide acclaim.

1.

5. Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon Whiskey, Hye, Texas Each and every bottle of bourbon whiskey are made by hand at Garrison Brothers, and it’s the fir t bourbon whiskey in the world to be cooked, fermented, distilled, barreled and bottled outside of Tennessee or Kentucky.

6. Ranger Creek Handcrafted Texas Whiskey, San Antonio, Texas Some of the state’s best beer and whiskey is made from scratch at Ranger Creek’s “brewstillery.” It’s the only one like it in Texas, and it’s one of only a handful in the United States.

7. Deep Eddy Vodka, Austin, Texas Deep Eddy Vodka gets its name from Austin’s historic Deep Eddy Pool, Texas’ oldest spring-fed swimming pool. It’s distilled 10 times in a state-of-the-art column still using only water, corn and natural fl vors.

8. Paula’s Texas Orange, Austin, Texas Paula’s Texas Orange (PTO), a brightly hued, orange-fl vored liqueur, begins with the zest of fresh oranges that have been steeped in Everclear. PTO is then fil ered through charcoal in small batches.

9. Railean White Rum, San Leon, Texas Railean Distillers is the fir t and only distillery in the Houston/ Galveston area. Founder Kelly Railean was inspired to venture into the world of distilling spirits and constructed the distillery in 2005.

10. Rebecca Creek Whiskey, San Antonio, Texas You can credit one of the largest copper pot stills ever built for the smooth taste of Rebecca Creek Whiskey. Well, this, and the proprietary 28-degree frost filt ation system.

Your Ultimate Summer Survival Guide By Amy Reisner

It’s summer! Let’s have some fun. We’ve rounded up some of the Metroplex’s top places to visit, things to see and activities to enjoy during the hot, sunny days ahead. Consider this a guide to your best summer yet.

35

Texas Motor Speedway If raw horsepower is your idea of summer fun, you can watch a variety of racing styles at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Throughout the summer, the track plays host to different racing styles, vehicles and tracks.

Six Flags Over Texas It wouldn’t be summer in North Texas without a trip to Six Flags Over Texas. Head to Arlington for 212 acres of family fun – from pulse-pounding rollercoasters to exciting live shows. New this summer is Justice League: Battle for Metropolis, a 4-D interactive dark ride experience.

’til Midnight at the Nasher Rain or shine, you can enjoy live outdoor concerts and film sc eenings at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas this summer. New for 2015 is a SingerSongwriter Spotlight series, an acoustic opening act that’s chosen according to social media suggestions.

NRH2O Family Water Park NRH2O in North Richland Hills puts a new twist on classic summer activities. When the sun sets, guests can flo t right up to the big screen for Dive-In movies. There are also fi ework displays to top off your summer fun.

Safari Splash at the Fort Worth Zoo After taking in all the sights of the Fort Worth Zoo, cool off at Safari Splash, a 14,000-square-foot splash area. This zero-depth water play area is equipped with tons of fun for little ones. It has a water dump tower, four slides, animalshaped water cannons, a fill all for water toys and a designated play area for toddlers.

Take Southlake Style with you this summer! Snap a photo with the magazine and send it to dia@southlakestyle.com. Your photo might end up in the pages of a future issue!

Giants of the Jurassic at the Dallas Zoo Featuring more than 20 roaring, animatronic dinosaurs, plus the world-renowned, interactive theater puppet experience of Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live, the Giants of the Jurassic exhibit at the Dallas Zoo offers a variety of ways for guests to learn more about where dinosaurs came from and find out what Dallas Zoo animals are most closely related to them.

Pirate Beach at Legoland Discovery Center Structured after a shipwrecked pirate vessel, Pirate Beach at Legoland Discovery Center features 30 interactive gadgets pumping and spraying thousands of gallons of water. It allows kids to navigate through water jets and fountains, squirt cannons and splash down water slides.

Sloan & Williams Winery There’s a cool reason this winery made it into our summer survival guide: wine ice cream. There’s something so summery about enjoying wine in dessert form. You can indulge in a scoop, pint or flight of this bo zy treat that’s available in eight sophisticated fl vors.

Fantasy in Sand A team of 13 international sand sculptors transforms three million pounds of sand into iconic scenes from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and it all takes place in a gigantic air-conditioned tent in the parking lot of Globe Life Park. If you’re heading to a Rangers game this summer, don’t miss this one-of-a-kind experience.

Built on Quality, Destined for Success SOMETIMES FAMILY AND BUSINESS ARE THE PERFECT MIX

T

he American dream is alive and well in Southlake. Just take a look at Claffey Pools, the brand behind backyard transformations throughout North Texas, and you’ll see why. Recognized as the fifth la gest pool company in the country, Claffey Pools may sound familiar to you for a variety of reasons. For more than 25 years, the family-owned business has served Southlake and beyond as the go-to experts for not only pools but the entire outdoor living experience—from functional patio kitchens to elaborate water features. But behind this success story is a family who worked hard to make it happen, and who continues to build on their father’s original motto, “Quality is our commitment to you,” in everything they do. Family Affair Shelly Claffey was only in 8th grade when her uncle Bobby returned to their home in Wisconsin with a plan. He was moving to Texas and believed there was great opportunity there as well for Shelly’s father, Paul, who was a fellow stonemason. “That was a brave move for my dad,” Shelly recalls. “He did everything he could for work at the time.” With little resources to his name, Paul booked a one-way ticket to Dallas, landed a job as a brick mason for a hotel in Arlington and began working odd jobs for swimming pool builders during his free time. Throughout the next fi e years, Paul found that quality residential swimming pools were in great demand in Texas. Why not start a business of his own, putting to use his attention to detail and talents as a mason? And so, Pools by Paul Claffey, later renamed Claffey Pools, was born.

Not to say it was an overnight success. Paul established his business simply, designing pools on napkins and exchanging deals over a handshake rather than a formal written contract. Despite these humble beginnings, word spread about his craftsmanship and dedication to quality, and soon Shelly and her two brothers, Brian and Charlie, joined in to help their father’s small business blossom into a full-blown corporation. “My dad asked me if I wanted to help him out in the offi e,” Shelly remembers. “I had just finished y associate’s degree in fashion merchandising and didn’t really want to go into the retail world. So I started doing payroll and offi e work.” Next Paul approached his sons. Shelly’s younger brother Brian joined fir t, taking on the construction and artistic aspect of the business. Then Shelly’s older brother Charlie, who already had established a corporate career in finan e, left his job to help manage the overall vision of the business. Next, their mother joined the business, leaving her career as a successful real estate agent. “About three or four years into it, I decided I wanted to learn the entire construction process,” Shelly says. “It put to use my design skills, and I’ve been selling and designing ever since. I love it.” And sell they have. In 2014 alone, Claffey Pools sold 468 projects—269 of those being new pools, 140 remodels and 59 new outdoor living spaces like fi eplaces, bars and built-in seating. Now with a retail store and corporate offi e in Southlake and 79 employees, a lot has changed since Claffey Pools’

fir t “official” office was created by adding a small screened-in porch to the family’s master bedroom. And you probably won’t find them s etching out plans on napkins anymore, and certainly not finalizing them there. “Back in the early 90s there were more basic pools, so we sold a lot but we could get them done a lot quicker,” Shelly explains. “Today, we are building resorts in people’s backyards, which takes a lot longer. The backyard has become an extension of the home; it’s where people want to be year round. ” Today, Shelly and her brothers have transitioned into co-owners of the company following a 10-year buyout plan from their parents, who have since retired and opened a retreat center. “My children have done a stellar job of following what we started,” Paul Claffey says. “From the very start I knew they were up to the challenge. If you look at the projects being done today, their know-how and experience shows a total commitment to excellent workmanship and a long-lasting relationship with the customer.” With bigger projects and more employees also came the need to make changes in the way the company was structured. “Where we’ve changed most is in our process, in our plans for building and in our training,” Shelly says. “When you have this many people, you can’t just wing it. It’s critical to have everything perfect, even before we start to build. Years ago we didn’t even worry about it, we’d say that we’d figu e it out as we go. But we can’t work like that anymore.” Of course, advancements in technology have completely redefined Claf ey Pools’ daily operations, but there are some things that never change. For one, the family-owned business is still a family-operated one, with 13 family members currently working in some facet within the company. “My wife and I see brothers and sister working together for a common good,” Paul says. “We see how many employees they have helped and employed through the years. We see they care for their employees. Claffey Pools is their company; we see how hard they work to maintain their status and reputation in the community. Their wishes and dreams are ours, so with that I’m sure the Good Lord will continue to guide them.” Blood-related or not, the same standards still hold true for all of Claffey Pools’ employees, and have since the very beginning. “Whether or not you’re a family member, we have our core values, and at the end of the day we want the best people possible while focusing on integrity, teamwork and leadership,” Shelly says. Committed to Quality Another key focus is ensuring Paul’s original motto continues to remain true for each and every project, no matter how large the company grows to become. “We always say, when you’re in a backyard and you’re designing or building or servicing, think of it as your own backyard and ask if you’re happy with it,” Shelly explains. “If the answer is no, then you make it right. That’s why getting our plans so detailed and perfect in the beginning is so important, because this is a product that they’ve paid for, and we’re going to deliver.”

But it isn’t just quality that has made Claffey Pools a trusted custom pool partner. It has been recognized nationally year after year for its extraordinary designs, and were invited to join the Masters Pool Guild, a network of luxury pool designers from across the country that share ideas and challenge one another to take designs to the next level. “We’ve been doing this for the past 28 years now, and I think we’re now known for not only great quality, but also great design,” Shelly notes. “There are a lot of people that wait to see us and want us to put our ideas down to really transform their backyard.” This means with Claffey Pools there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all tyle. Shelly said the team gets to know client personalities and talks over ideas with them prior to making any solid plans to ensure every possibility has been considered. “We over-engneer things, and include elements that a lot of companies don’t in their builds,” Shelly says. “It’s just how we do things and how we build our pools. Every job is always built the same, with a focus on quality and doing the job right.” Sounds like that’s just the Claffey way, from one generation to the next.

our home bar is what you make of it, and how you stock your liquor cabinets and barware is of no consequence to your guests. However, as a seasoned host or hostess, you are no doubt aware that presentation is everything. And depending on what type of atmosphere you wish to create for your soirée, this 1930s French Trolley Bar Cart by Restoration Hardware can easily transform your gathering into an afternoon in Paris. Usually associated with its stunning architecture and beautiful French paintings, Paris is also known for its finer selection of elegant cocktails. What better way to present them? Modeled after the classic French trolleys of yesteryear, this cart is made of stainless steel and glass. Less than three feet tall, the cart never takes up too much space in a room. Two tempered glass shelves—one on top and one bellow— keep your

spirits upright and organized. The top shelf has eight small compartments providing quick access to your liquor bottles and glassware. A rail lines the back of the top shelf to protect drinks from falling when you are pouring and mixing. The bottom shelf has eight compartments perfect for heavier bottles. The spaciousness of the bottom shelf also allows room for anything you may need when making drinks such as an ice bucket or any other bar tool you have in your collection. Finally, with four swiveling wheels, the cart easily transfers from one setting in your home to the next. With all of your drinking essentials housed in one convenient place, you have one less thing to worry about as a host or hostess, which means more time enjoying your guests. This sophisticated French trolley pairs nicely with modern furniture, and can transform any room into a Parisian paradise.

66 • JUNE 15

Welcome to the June edition of the Foodie Fellow, which happens to be my final post to this column for Southlake Style. As I was crafting this article (hindered by a crashed hard drive) my heart was very thankful for the opportunity given to me by Mike and Nicole Tesoriero to bring to life some unique dining experiences across the DFW Metroplex as I pursued my passion to find these culinary adventures and share them with you. I hope you have enjoyed learning about the amazing creativity that can be found in restaurants in our area and

that you have had fun finding some new places to dine. Thank you for taking the time to read my humble posts here at Southlake Style for the past 18 months. With that, let’s dive into our dining adventure at Luscher’s Red Hots in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas. Brian Luscher is the owner and executive chef at Dallas institution, The Grape, on lower Greenville Avenue. If you haven’t had the opportunity to have brunch at The Grape, go this weekend! One of Brian’s other passions has been producing

high-quality sausages and hot dogs through his Luscher’s Post Oak brand, and now he has a location to showcase not only these products but also his Midwestern roots as a native Chicagoan. The restaurant’s interior features a very minimalist décor that follows the look and feel of many establishments in Deep Ellum—very industrial. Although as a diner, you do not get the sense of a cold or unapproachable atmosphere. A member of their team will walk you through the simple menu when you approach the counter, giving you the choice between a sandwich and sausage. Your then add some sides and a beverage to wash down your tasty meal. The signature sandwich is Luscher’s take on a Midwestern favorite, an “Eye-Talian” Beef featuring Wagyu beef on a locally sourced French roll. The signature sausage choice? The Luscher’s Post Oak Red Hot with Brian’s own pork & beef smoked frank and toppings that are similar to a traditional Chicago dog. There are a few other choices if you want a salad (why would you?) or Northerner Chili that does feature beans. We chose the Luscher’s Post Oak Red Hot and the Corn Chip Chili Dog each with a side of the hand-cut fries and napa slaw. Both featured sausages with a nice snap to the skin. It was all very fresh and served at the perfect temperature. We dined outside on the patio at some very rustic picnic style tables and watched the traffic drive by on Commerce Street. You can finish off by selecting from a variety of Pop Star brand popsicles, LH Creamery Bars and a few other sweets. Don’t miss out on this homage to Chicago and the Midwest. Summertime is a great time for a dog, fries and a cold drink!

For more of my dining adventures both in DFW and elsewhere, you can find me on my new online food magazine called Foodieocity. Come check it out at http://foodieo.city or on Twitter and Instagram @foodieocity. I hope you continue having fun food adventures!

A great place to eat, meet and drink

Photos courtesy brickhouse Tavern + Tap

If you’re looking for a new haunt with restaurant meets tavern flai , Brick House Tavern + Tap in Grapevine is your go-to. Come for the menu of American classics with a twist— deviled eggs anyone?—and stay for the cozy, lounge-like atmosphere, complete with an indoor fi eplace and outdoor fi epit. Sure, you can enjoy dining in a comfortable booth or at a table made for two, four or six, but why not nosh on a crowd favorite such as chicken and waffles while sitting in a comfortable recliner watching one of the restaurant’s 30 TVs? With dark wood and brick features throughout, the décor creates an atmosphere at Brick House reminiscent of a tavern, but with modern features such as an exposed ceiling and catchy phrases on illuminated signs and walls throughout the restaurant. You’ll want to “Keep Calm Drink Beer,” while you ponder such life-changing quotes as “Beer is proof that God loves you.” Thank you Benjamin Franklin for that tidbit. With an environment that comes off as a meet and drink location only, it may be easy to overlook Brick House’s menu of your soon-to-be favorites such as the Deviled Eggs (farm-fresh eggs, smoky bacon, hint of jalapeño, paprika and chives) or the Kobe Burger (hand-molded Wagyu beef patty, sautéed onions, roasted tomatoes, spring mix, brie and roasted red pepper aioli on a brioche bun). One of our lunchtime favorites was the Chicken and Waffles (two homemade Belgian waffles, crisp fried chicken tenders, syrup and a fresh strawberry). The chicken had just enough batter to make it crunchy, and the waffles ere fluff . Although we stopped in for lunch and enjoyed an iced tea with our meal, the restaurant’s bar is far too stocked to overlook. Brick House offers more than 80 beers, including local craft beers, a variety of imports and American classics. More than 22 of these are on tap, and for your local variety of brew—each location features a hand-pulled beer engine pumping local ale from a wooden cask. For something really unique, how about enjoying a brew on tap with your friends fl wing from a handcrafted glass, 100 oz. beer bong? If beer isn’t your libation of choice, and you’d rather stick with a cocktail—or two, we won’t judge—enjoy a Blackberry Collins or Blood Orange Whiskey Sour during Happiness Hour. And while you’re there for Brick House’s aptly named happy hour, head out onto the wooden patio to mix and

the cocktails and appetizers are to die for – especially the sangria and seared beef crostini. Our only advice: Get there early. Seating goes quick during happy hour.

3. Sushi Zushi

Three happy hour hotspots to hit now Is it 4:30 p.m. yet? In the Metroplex, that’s the happiest time of the day, according to GoTime.com. It’s when nearly 1,000 happy hours kick off at bars, pubs and restaurants all over Dallas/Fort Worth each weekday. Think you’re missing out if you don’t work in uptown Dallas or downtown Fort Worth? You’re not. You can find all the after-work apps, beverages and good times right here in Southlake. Here are three of our city’s must-hit happy hours.

You’ve probably seen the Sushi Zushi car zipping around town, but this Southlake sushi spot serves up more than modern Japanese fare – it also has a can’t-miss happy hour complete with beautifully plated, fl vorful rolls and creative signature drinks. (We recommend the cucumber saketini.) The place can get a little packed during happy hour, but the staff won’t forget about you. They’re friendly, quick and attentive. The happy hour details: Sip on $5 signature cocktails and savor specially priced appetizers and rolls daily from 3 to 7 p.m. Why we love it: The upscale atmosphere and impressive selection of sake won us over. We like that you can order the sake how you want it: by the glass, small carafe or bottle.

1. The Ginger Man If you’re serious about a great brew, The Ginger Man could very well be your new favorite happy-hour destination. This premium beer bar offers more than 60 unique beers from around the world on tap and about 75 in bottles. Not sure if you’d prefer a frosty Xingu from Brazil or an icecold Blanche de Bruxelles from Belgium? The bartenders will gladly put their beer prowess to work to ensure your palate is pleased. The happy hour details: Get $1 off most pints and talls from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Why we love it: With a full wall of beer on tap, TVs that aren’t overly obtrusive, and a friendly round of darts underway in the corner, The Ginger Man has an undeniably authentic pub atmosphere. The bites aren’t your typical bar fare, though. We love sinking our teeth into a chickencranberry sandwich or dunking a square of warm fl tbread into red-pepper hummus.

2. Truluck’s

When you think of Truluck’s, fresh-from-the-ocean seafood or tender, perfectly seasoned steaks probably come to mind. But there’s another reason this Southlake favorite should be on your radar when 4:30 rolls around: It has a phenomenal happy hour. Officially called the “Half Price Cocktail Hour,” you can kick off your evening with an appetizing array of light bites, cocktails and select wines – all for a cool 50-percent off. There’s also live piano entertainment seven nights a week. The happy hour details: Enjoy half-price cocktails, select wines and appetizers for half price from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. daily in the Stone Crab Lounge. Why we love it: It’s hard to beat the elegant ambience at Truluck’s. Candles are aglow on the tables, and the sounds from the piano melt away any stress from the day. Oh, and

“Southern Style” Comes to Dallas Rucker...country music sensation?

W

hether you’re a fan of country, rock or R&B, you’ve probably heard a song by South Carolina’s Darius Rucker. The eclectic musician first gained fame in the late 1980s when he founded Grammy-winning rock band Hootie & the Blowfish with a few of his classmates at the University of South Carolina. Known for undeniably feel-good hits like “Hold My Hand” and “Only Wanna Be With You,” the band still finds time to reunite, recently stopping by the Late Show with David Letterman this past April, 20 years after their breakthrough performance on the show. But it’s Rucker’s more recent stint as a country star that has him topping the charts these days. Following his highly successful career with his band, Rucker set out on his own, first releasing an R&B album in 2002 and later finding his footing in the country genre when he signed with Capitol Records Nashville in 2008. Releasing his first hit single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” to rave reviews, he followed with two more No. 1 singles: “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” and “Alright.” These instant hits sealed the deal and proved Rucker was here to stay, earning him the coveted New Artist Award from the Country Music Association. So where is Darius Rucker today? He’s still lighting up the charts, following up his debut album with hits like “Come Back Song,”

76 • JUNE 15

“This,” “Homegrown Honey” and the popular remake of the classic song “Wagon Wheel,” originally sketched by Bob Dylan. Armed with his guitar and signature smile, Rucker is taking his talents on the road once again, playing to crowds as varied as his music—from the Hootie & the Blowfish lifelong fan to those just discovering him. But these days, Rucker is in a “Southern State of Mind,” and we hope he stays there for a long while. I am looking to sell my house “as is.” What do I need to know? First, know that the “as is” language in the current TREC contract goes a long way in protecting sellers choosing to sell their house in its present condition. But for added peace of mind, here are a few suggestions: 1) Advertise your home “as is” in the MLS and other marketing materials; 2) Include a separate addendum to your real estate contract that the house is being sold in “as is” condition (an attorney can help you prepare proper language); 3) Encourage or require the buyer to obtain an independent inspection prior to closing; and 4) When in doubt, DISCLOSE any known repairs or property issues. As with many legal issues, care and candor up front can save you money and heartache down the road.

ver wonder where your favorite barley pop was born? Whether you’re into IPAs, hefeweizens, or black and tans, your tastes have a birthplace. For some beer lovers, that location is right around the corner from home. Other connoisseurs have more international tastes. But we won’t discriminate when it comes to discerning palates—after all, to each their own hops. Although the average American lives within 10 miles of a brewery, we wanted to help you branch out. Travel with a purpose the next time you find yourself with a week or so to spare—take a brewhouse tour that gets you out of the house and maybe even across the pond.

Born in Texas The Spoetzl Brewery has called Shiner, Texas, home since 1909 when Bavarian-born Kosmos Spoetzl purchased the town’s brewery and became Shiner’s first official brewmaster. As an independent facility, all Shiner beer flows from Spoetzl and is still brewed with the same

pure artesian well water discovered in 1909. However, if you can’t count yourself as one of the 2,069 residents of the town, the brewery sends more than six million cases of its beer across the country. That means when you find yourself leaving the Lone Star State for business or pleasure, you’re sure to find a Shiner somewhere on your travels. The town of Shiner is about two and a half hours west of San Antonio, and brewhouse tours take place Monday through Friday multiple times per day during the summer months. Be sure to meet the brewmaster of this century, Jimmy Mauric, who’s been brewing for Spoetzl since 2005, making him the sixth brewmaster. Watch him while he works—he may even be whistling. During your tour there will be a chance to sample the goods as well. And what goods there are! The beer that started it all—Shiner Bock—is available year round, but a great brew available during summer months, Prickly Pear, is a lighter beer with a tart-citrusy fl vor. These are only two of a family of 12 Shiner Bock is proud to brew. Shiner.com If you find yourself near Shiner this summer, and can’t find a porch to kick back on with your cold one—and perhaps you are in the mood to do the Texas Two Step—visit Moulton, Texas. Just a short 10-mile drive north, Scooter’s Dance Hall is the perfect place to enjoy your Bock on a barstool and listen to live music, Texas Country style. ScootersDanceHall.com

As with most things in the “old world,” Guinness has history. In 1759, Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on a disused brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, and he began brewing porter and ale. When the first shipment of Guinness found its way to American soil in 1840, it landed in New York. But it wasn’t until 1914 that the vast majority (50 percent) of Guinness in the United States was bottled locally. Today, more than 10 million glasses of Guinness are enjoyed each day in more than 150 countries. Visiting the Guinness Storehouse is an experience. You’ll want to bring your walking shoes to explore the seven-story building that is more of a museum than just a brewhouse. If you are a history buff, then you’ll enjoy learning about the ins and outs of brewing Guinness. But if you’d rather just skip the lessons and move right on the tasting, then head to the fourth floo . Experienced Guinness “ambassadors” will teach you the craft of pouring the perfect pint of beer. And for bragging rights, bring back your official perfect pour certifi ate from the Guinness Storehouse to the states. Once framed, it will make a nice addition to any home bar. Guinness-Storehouse.com If you’re in the mood to enjoy your Guinness outside the four walls of the Storehouse, there are plenty (more than 1,000) of Irish pubs in Dublin for you to do so. Known as the oldest pub in Ireland, The Brazen Head dates back to 1198. With live music every night, and traditional Irish food on the menu, including its famed beef and Guinness stew, The Brazen Head is the perfect place to meet a local who’s willing to settle down on a barstool near you and weave an Irish tale or two. Nor’ Eastern Lager

The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 after founder Jim Koch found his great-great grandfather’s recipe for Louis Koch Lager in his father’s attic. Jim began brewing, and soon was traveling from bar to bar with a suitcase full of Sam Adams Boston Lager, hoping to sell his wares. Crediting themselves as serving as the catalyst for the American-craft beer movement, the brewery’s Boston Lager officially debuted in 1985, and the rest is history. The next big thing to come from Samuel Adams would be the introduction of the Samuel Adams Boston Lager Pint Glass in 2007, which Jim says helps sustain the head of the beer, enhance aroma and maintain temperature—all of which you’ll get to experience on a tour of the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery. Open six days a week (closed on Sunday), the brewhouse offers tours throughout the day on a first come first serve basis. You’ll learn about the history of the Boston Beer Company, see the staff and process in action and, of course, have a chance to sample the beer. No matter which bar you choose to enjoy your Samuel Adams beer, you can be sure that bartenders know how to pour the perfect glass. As a matter of fact, they are certified in the process. Perfect Pour Certifie accounts “make sure that their glassware is free of detergent residues, and pour their beer with the proper amount of head. The deep amber color shines in a clean glass, and the 1-2 inches of a thick, white head retains and releases the beer’s aroma.” SamuelAdams.com

SS NEXT DOOR

spirited neighbor

QA SPIRITED NEIGHBOR The Patrón Spirits Company’s Global CMO Lee Applbaum This Southlake resident used his creative thinking to share with us what’s trending in spirits and where to find good tequila in the area.

SS NEXT DOOR

spirited neighbor

When Patrón was launched in 1989, the world was introduced to ultra-premium tequila. Today, Patrón accounts for more than 70 percent of sales in the ultra-premium tequila category, and the company has steadily expanded worldwide distribution to countries in Asia, Europe and South America. Global Chief Marketing Offi er Lee Applbaum heads up the global sales and marketing offi es, which are located in Southlake.

You were recently awarded The CMO’s Club Creativity Award. In what ways do you see yourself as a creative person? While I am certainly honored by the recognition, the reality is that it is far more a reflection on the equila Patrón brand and organization than specifically on my work. I have the distinction of leading the global marketing organization, and as such, shepherding the brand, but the reality is that it takes a worldclass team to deliver truly breakthrough, creative work. I like to think about our creativity more in terms of being innovative— ensuring that we are staying on top of the latest consumer and lifestyle trends and then delivering creative, programs, and experiences that support our positioning and tell our unique brand story and commitment to making the world’s best, artisanal tequila.

Trends in marketing via social media and multimedia channels have exploded over the past fi e years or so. How do these fit in o what you are accomplishing at Patrón Spirits? Despite our leadership position (we have nearly a 70-percent market share in ultra-premium tequila), it’s staggering to think about the fact that until 2014 we really didn’t have a disciplined digital or social practice, and in some ways, weren’t even participating in some very basic platforms. We launched our Twitter account (@patron) in mid-2014 and in a few short months had the largest spirits brand globally on the platform. That’s a reflection of the orld-class team that I have leading digital and social, but also consumers’ affinity or our brand and a reflection on h w passionate they are about engaging with it. We are one of the largest spirits brands globally on Facebook as well with nearly four million

likes. The key, however, isn’t about followers or likes, but offering relevant content that drives consumer engagement.

How are you facing the challenges in distinguishing Patrón tequilas from the rest in the market? Our brand enjoys unparalleled awareness and affinity s ores. We have been mentioned in song lyrics across virtually every genre, appear in television shows and movies, and are regularly mentioned by or photographed with celebrities, musicians, and athletes— none of whom have ever been paid to do so, by the way. All of this is just organic, and a reflection on the power of our brand. That said, despite our brand’s popularity, it’s amazing how few consumers and members of the trade realize that we handcraft our tequila using only the most time-honored, traditional and artisanal methods.

Of the Patrón Spirit brands, which is your go-to for a cocktail you’d enjoy at home? Right now, I’m really into an Old Fashioned made with our newly released Roca Patrón Reposado. The earthy, agave fl vor enhances the classic cocktail in ways I never would have imagined, and there are a number of bartenders around the DFW area making amazing versions of it. I’d think about tequila a little like wine— depends on your mood, the weather, what or who you’re enjoying it with— all those factors influen e what tequila you drink (Silver, Reposado, Añejo, for example) and how you want to enjoy it.

As a Southlake resident, where would you say are the best places to get a margarita around town? What makes these bars/ restaurants so special? I’ve had some amazing margaritas in town ranging from the most casual Mexican restaurant to some very sophisticated ones at more upscale destinations. The good news is that we’re really blessed with great support from restaurants and bars in Southlake, and never take that for granted, despite our brand’s popularity.

Stock Your Bar for a Summer Soiree

2.

1.

Ah, summer. The season of pool parties and backyard bashes. If you’re the one doing the entertaining this summer, it’s helpful to know how to appropriately stock your home bar. Whether you’re hosting an intimate event for 10 or a much larger affair, read on for insight on how to set up your bar for a party (plus ideas on the bar essentials we’re loving right now).

THE DRINKS

3.

With most groups, you can’t go wrong serving wine. If you offer a red and a white, you’ll have something for nearly everyone’s taste. But how many bottles should you have on hand for your party? Consider this: A bottle of wine will give you about fi e glasses, and most people enjoy one to 1.5 drinks per hour. When it comes to liquor, one 750 mL bottle yields approximately 16 servings. You’ll want to have at least a bottle or two (possibly more depending on your guest count) of each of these types of liquors: vodka, gin, scotch, whiskey, tequila and rum. If your party is themed, specialty liquors such as sake or raspberry vodka make fun additions. If you’re serving beer, a good rule of thumb is to offer a 50/50 ratio of light to regular beer. Also, consider whether you want imports or domestics. Don’t overlook the non-alcoholic drinks – your home bar should also be stocked with soft drinks (diet and regular), club soda, tonic and juice. How much do you need? One liter will usually cover fi e to 10 people depending on the duration of your party.

THE DETAILS Every well-appointed home bar should have …

1. A SOPHISTICATED COCKTAIL SHAKER. You can show off your mixing skills and your good taste with this stunner we saw at Nordstrom. 2. A CLASSY BAR SET. This wine pull and opener we discovered at Bloomingdale’s has a fresh, modern look. 3. A CHIC CHILLER. You’ll need a spot to stylishly chill your wine, and this stainless steel tub from Pier 1 is one of our favorite ways to do it. 4. A COOL GAME. Give your guests something fun to do. We love the retro charm of this skeeball game from Restoration Hardware. 5. A GREAT SET OF GLASSWARE. We love the summery vibe of these coral-themed glasses from Pottery Barn.

ZERO TO 60

Harley-Davidson packs a 1690cc engine and plenty of dragster attitude in its newest high-end Softail.

Breakout Classic Harley-Davidson Stays True to Form and Function With the 2015 Breakout Softail

F DETAILS Engine: Air-cooled, 1690 cc Twin Cam 103TM Fuel Capacity: 5 gal. MPG: 42 mpg Transmission: 6-Speed Cruise Drive MSRP: $18,599 and up

ounded in 1903 by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, Harley-Davidson has built a decisively loyal following for its inspired motorcycles. Reinventing its engineering for more than a century, the Milwaukee-based manufacturer has a stronghold on the American Dream—which now includes one of its two-wheeled beauties. It takes a moment to fully appreciate all the 2015 Breakout has to offer. Designed with a wide and impactful rear wheel in true “gasser” form, this bike harkens back to the dragsters of the 1950s and ’60s. True to the time period, the considerably cropped fenders are just large enough for the chrome struts to lay claim. The minimalist design only accentuates the dramatic size differential between the front and rear wheels. Even the license plate has been side-mounted to keep that distinctively clean look. What sets the Breakout apart from its older Softail siblings is its length. At just a hair longer than 93 inches and a wheelbase of 67 inches, the Breakout is the longest member of the family. Harley took the frame and gave the steering head a 35-degree rake,

which is a dramatic difference to the 31-degree rake on the celebrated Fat Boy. Combined with the low-slung seat at just 26.4 inches, this bike has a muscular stance that is only refined by the gleam of the wheel’s alternating chrome spokes. Those looking for even more shine can opt for the Hard Candy Custom Paint in colors like Quicksilver Flake or Radioactive Green for an additional $1,200. Throwing off a muscular look is one thing, but backing it up is another. Behind this bike is Harley’s 1690cc Twin Cam 103TM engine that carries on the brand’s engineering prowess with more “stump-pulling” torque than ever before. A six-speed transmission allows for the perfect blend of smooth shifting for power when it’s needed most. And a lower cruising RPM leaves the rumble for your ears, not your rear. Whether you are on the bike or not, it is apparent technology and safety were important for the engineering team. The on-board security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms as you approach and walk away from the bike. Even if you forget, with the fob set on your key ring, it’s nice to know safety is always with you.
