A quick smile. A sharp mind. A big heart. A supportive family. A commitment to excellence. Thick skin. Yes, it takes a lot of things to be Mayor of Southlake, Texas. City Council meetings until 3 a.m., followed by early morning breakfast sessions, and more weekend appearances than you could possibly make. They are all par for this 36-month course. Along the way you had better keep your day job, because this one is unpaid, and an inbox full of meeting and resident requests won’t pay the mortgage here, or anywhere else for that matter. A two-term stint as mayor is all the more impressive, as it requires the willingness and the support to do it all over again. A mayor needs all of the above and more to be effective. A successful mayor must also want more for a city tomorrow than it may have to offer his family today. That means a commitment to better parks their kids won’t play in, better schools they will be to old to attend and safer streets they may never drive on. In many instances in dramatically growing suburbs like ours, the mayor may even have to forsake today’s comforts for tomorrow’s convenience (lest we forget the medians). And all the while he or she leads a team of elected officials, professionals and volunteers who face these often-controversial decisions head on. Let’s face it, most of us chose to move to Southlake, and we did so long after people like John Terrell first raised their hands to volunteer. For Terrell, that would be 1999, the year Town Square first opened to the public, when he put his professional expertise to work for the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment. For the next sixteen years—almost the entire lifespan of his eldest son who graduates from Carroll next month—John Terrell earned nothing but respect and increased responsibilities. From second grade career days and feral hogs to gas drilling task forces and tax increment financing, he’s handled it all with unwavering enthusiasm and finesse. What more can you expect from a man whose Dragon license plate reads JT4SLK? For the last six years, I’ve had the pleasure of befriending John Terrell. A high-powered executive, family man—and one heck of a cornhole thrower—who hasn’t lost sight of, and stands up for what makes our community special. As he leaves the city’s highest office this month, he leaves it at a peak that is still rising.

WILDER MIND MUMFORD & SONS MAY 4

A Change of Pace Leaving folk-style music behind in favor of electric rock’n’roll, Mumford & Sons’ third album, Wilder Mind, is a blast of something totally different than what you’re used to. They’ve added drums, synthesizers, electric guitars, and they are—well—simply louder than they were before. Their single “Believe” was released March 9 and is very reminiscent of the sounds of Coldplay and U2. Do not expect this album to sound like a sequel to 2012’s Babel, or anything they have released previously for that matter. It’s fun, it’s different, and yet, it still displays the same heart that made fans fall in love in the first place.

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS DAVID MCCULLOUGH MAY 5

Flight of Your Life The Wright brothers changed the world when they flew the first powered machine known as an airplane more than 100 years ago. David McCullough, a historian and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, tells the story of this thrilling American tale of two brothers from North Carolina. The book is comprised of thousands of the Wright brothers’ notes, scrapbooks and private family letters, pieced together to weave the story of how Wilbur and Orville Wright worked together with hardly any money and only a high school education to teach the world how to fly.

The Hunt is On THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON IN THEATRES MAY 1

Time to save the world, again? Your favorite superheroes are back on the screen again, in the next chapter of the Avengers series. This star-studded cast brings back the good guys you love to root for—Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans). But what’s a new adventure without a new villain? When Tony Stark—Iron Man—tries to jumpstart a peacekeeping program, things do not go according to plan. America’s superheroes have to battle the villainous Ultron (James Spader) in an attempt to restore peace to the universe for the second time.

10 • MAY 15

This thrilling drama by Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club) takes you to small town Idaho where Matt Dillon (Something About Mary) plays Ethan Burke, a U.S. Secret Service agent on the hunt for two missing federal agents. However, everywhere he turns more questions appear, revealing a bigger mystery the town is hiding. You will be holding your breath as Ethan tries to uncover the truth about Wayward Pines before he reaches the same fate as the others who came before him. With M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) as an executive producer, it’s clear that this show will have to be watched with all the lights on.

community Carroll and Keller share a lengthy and intense rivalry and Carroll had suffered a tough 8-1 loss to Keller earlier in the season. “For the first time in a long time, we had a full and healthy roster, and we’re able to turn it up defensively all the way,” said Carroll head coach Knute Anderson. “We had strong leadership from seniors Tyler Culp, Blake Taylor, Jeff Rucci, Connor Moss and goaltender Christian Westerberg, which resulted in a sweet and well-fought victory for the entire team.”

WESTLAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GIFT FROM DELOITTE Representatives from Deloitte University stopped by Westlake Town Hall in March to deliver a $10,000 check that Fire Department staff used to purchase testing equipment for breathing apparatus. Westlake Fire Chief Richard Whitten said the department is very appreciative of the gift, which will allow for onsite testing of the firefighters’ masks. In the past, the department had to go offsite for the testing, which takes place once per year as a requirement by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. “This will allow us to comply with state regulations easier,” Whitten said. “We appreciate Deloitte’s partnership and generosity to our Fire Department and to our community.” Whitten said the gift giving actually began last year, after Deloitte University Managing Director Pete Sackleh called and asked if the Fire Department had any needs. That call led to a first gift of $10,000 to the Fire Department to be used on a live fire extinguisher training system, which is used to provide training to the public on proper fire extinguisher use and fire extinguishing techniques. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL VARSITY HOCKEY TEAM WINS CITY CHAMPIONSHIP The Southlake Carroll Varsity Hockey Team won the City Championship in March at NyTex Sports Center in North Richland Hills. Although their season record was 5 and 15, and they were seeded fifth in the playoffs, that didn’t prevent the Dragons from overpowering the first, second and fourth seeded teams to ultimately take home first place. Carroll defeated Highland Park 4-1 in the first round and confidently upset first seed Arlington/Midlothian 5-2 in game two. But the sweetest win for the Dragons came when the team outscored Keller—its biggest nemesis—2-1 in the final game.

SENIOR ADULTS CELEBRATE THEIR MILESTONE BIRTHDAYS Martha (Watson) Wood of Southlake and Millie Stuck of Colleyville have each celebrated their 100th birthday this year; Martha in February and Millie in April. The City of Southlake and Southlake Senior Center honored Martha and Millie in late March with a large birthday celebration at the Southlake Senior Center. More than 120 guests plus many city staff attended the event. Southlake’s Mayor Pro-tem Laura Hill presented each woman with a letter from the President and Mrs. Obama, a Proclamation from the State Representative, a flag that was flown on their birthday over the State Capital, a City of Southlake Proclamation and many more gifts.

TOP ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE SOUTHLAKE DEPARTMENTS OF PUBLIC SAFETY The City of Southlake Departments of Public Safety—including the Police and Fire Departments—recently underwent stringent reaccreditation processes, and the departments were not only successfully reaccredited, they reached outstanding statuses for their respective departments. Several members of the Southlake Police Department traveled to Reno, Nevada, in March for the final reaccreditation hearing before members with the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). As one of his last duties with the City of Southlake, former Police Chief Steve Mylett attended along with Lieutenant Douglas and Accreditation Coordinator Roland DeGraauw. During the hearing the CALEA Commissioners said they were very impressed with the Southlake Police Department, and they commended the police department for their professionalism and an extremely successful reaccreditation on-site, which took place in December 2014. The Southlake Fire Department achieved International Accredited Agency Status by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). Members of the department including Fire Chief Mike Starr, Deputy Fire Chief Wade Carroll and Accreditation Coordinator Roland DeGraauw traveled to Orlando, Florida, in March to receive the awards from CFAI. This is the Southlake Fire Department’s 4th award by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

GOV. ABBOTT ATTENDS THE GATEHOUSE OPENING CEREMONIES Texas Governor Greg Abbott, as well as Ft. Worth Mayor Betsy Price, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate, were on hand to celebrate the grand opening ceremony of The Gatehouse Community in Grapevine in March. The 61-acre supportive living community for women and children in crisis, which includes apartment complexes able to house 96 women and 135 children, counseling centers, a general store, playgrounds, a childcare center and a chapel, accepted its first families in April, and will allow members to stay up to 21⁄2

years depending on their individually tailored program. The community will offer the accountability members need to seek freedom from the past and hope for the future. During members’ stay, the faith-based Independent Life Program will provide housing, transportation, child care, food, clothing, education, employment guidance, medical care, counseling and life skills mentoring, uniquely without government funding. Gov. Abbott commented on the importance of facilities and programs such as The Gatehouse coming from the grassroots level—that solutions for issues such as domestic violence do not always come out of Washington, D.C., or Austin. “When you see something like this generate a level of excitement as this did, we do hope it serves as a catalyst for other Texans to create something like this in other places throughout the state.” SOUTHLAKE NAMED TREE CITY USA BY THE ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION Southlake was named a 2014 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Southlake achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. “Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Southlake make smart investments in urban forests,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”

CRE8STONE A Timeless Look in Less Time

F

rom colonial to contemporary and Mediterranean to modern, homeowners have a wide range of architectural styles from which to choose. Through it all, the old world look of natural limestone has graced homes and buildings for centuries— and continues to do so today— because of its versatility and old world charm. By bringing a 30-year old European technology to Texas, Cre8stone of North Texas offers an innovative process to remodel your home with artisanal stone finishes. Through Cre8stone innovative technologies most any flat surface in your home from exterior/interior walls and floors to countertops and patios can be given a timeless look that can save precious time and money. How It Works Cre8stone, a Texas-based member of the National Home Builders Association (NAHB) and the National Remodeling Industry Association (NARI), helps homeowners refinish and remodel their homes with a decorative coating made from crushed limestone. When mixed with the company’s bonding ingredients and water, the proprietary mixture can be sprayed to most any flat surface. Before the surface dries it is then carved and colored by Cre8stone’s skilled craftsmen. Each artisan is certified on every one of Cre8stone’s custom applications. They hand carve and then color the product with natural pigment while the stone is still wet, to assure permanent coloration. Upon drying, the brand new façade looks and feels just like natural stone laid in a specific design of your choice, such as Devonian sandstone, Scottish potpourri, and many more. “We can overlay a stone accent on brick, tile, wood, sheetrock and even formica to give homeowners the exact look they desire,” said President and local North Texas dealer James McGilvray, “and because there is no need to tear out existing surfaces, we can give customers the exact look they want at a fraction of the cost and time associated with a typical remodel.” Durable and Guaranteed The product looks good, and thanks to its limestone foundation, is just as durable. Perfect indoors or out Cre8stone is naturally vapour permeable, thus it eliminates the presence of moisture in the walls and substrates. It is also has the elasticity to minimize shrinking and cracking in the extreme Texas weather. The end product is eco-friendly and highly resistant to weather conditions, temperature and to the passing of time. “Homeowners often ask me if it will look like real stone, and I tell them once it dries it is real stone,” explains McGilvray. That is why he has no problems guaranteeing his work for as long as you own the home. Whether you are remodeling to sell for top dollar, want to recreate your backyard, driveway or patio, or freshen up your interior, Cre8stone of North Texas is ready to make your home look its best!

Former Southlake High School football coach, Todd Dodge, who now heads up the West Lake High School football team, joined Boardroom CEO Bruce Schultz at the West Lake grand opening last night to show his support, as he is a long-time client from the original Southlake salon. In other Boardroom news, after more than 10 years, CEO Bruce Schultz will be expanding out of state to open a salon in Nashville, Tennessee. What started out as a single salon in 2004 at Southlake Town Square, has now grown to 19 salons across Texas, including DFW, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. “We chose Nashville for its strong business climate, vibrant cultural and social environment and that our two daughters attend the university there,” said Schultz. “We have been traveling to Nashville for the last 3 1/2 years, and have always enjoyed our time there. We are actually opening in Brentwood, a suburb of Nashville, which has many of the same characteristics as Southlake—residents even call Brentwood the ‘bubble’.”

MAYOR JOHN TERRELL LEAVES BEHIND A LEGACY FOR SOUTHLAKE

COMING TO TERM

Southlake class again, and he was just going to attend that to learn more about the city.” One position led to another, and soon Terrell was approached on the subject of running for mayor in 2008. “Since it felt as if I was given an entire education from the ground up, it seemed like a natural progression,” he says. “I decided I would love to serve the city in that capacity.”

Memorable City Projects and Programs As city councilman and mayor, Terrell has seen so many of the projects through that shaped and molded Southlake into what it is today. Certain projects, though, stick out as ones that made significant strides for the community and its residents. Of course, it should be mentioned that for years, city has held AAA bond ratings—the highest rating a city can achieve in financial management—and without them, many of these projects may not have had enough funding.

he Terrell family packs T their bags and moves back to Texas—this time to Southlake.

Transportation and Parks During Terrell’s time in office, major strides in transportation and mobility were made. To say the roadways in and around Southlake have simply improved would be an understatement. But there are still some changes that will have to be made by the next mayor. “While much has been accomplished, there is still much to be done,” Terrell says. “I do regret that I will not be able to continue the efforts to further improve mobility in the city, but I am comforted by the fact that this will be left in the capable hands of others.” Not to be overlooked in the arena of mobility enhancement are the more than 11 miles of new sidewalks and trails created during the past six years. Terrell is very passionate about parks and recreation for residents. “Our parks system is one of the best in the state, and when complete, Bicentennial Park will represent one of the finest parks in the Southwest United States,” he says. “That is something for which we can all be proud.”

After seeing a notice in the local paper, John gets involved and eventually joins the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Texas native who grew up in Northeast Tarrant County, Mayor John Terrell moved back to the area in the late ’90s from San Francisco with his wife, Joanne, to raise their family. “We chose Southlake, and that’s because we had our first child,” Terrell says. “We knew we wanted a community city—not just a city. We wanted a great school district, and we wanted a little bit of land, so we selected Southlake.” And although community involvement was at the top of the family’s list, they never dreamed their patriarch would one day be mayor of this quaint little city. “I never had any intention of running for any political office—that was probably furthest from my mind,” he recalls. “But what we did decide is that if we were going to raise our children in this community, we were going to get involved.” Joanne remembers exactly how their simple desire for community involvement turned into more than just joining the HOA or PTA. “We had been married about 12 years when we moved to Southlake, and in all that time, the idea of him in city government had never even crossed our minds,” she says. “Actually, when we decided to get involved, it still wasn’t on our minds. [John] just read an article in the local newspaper saying they were starting up the Leadership

Safety has been top of mind for the city’s citizens for years— so no wonder it was top priority during Terrell’s tenure as mayor. From following through with Southlake’s master plan to building new DPS facilities, he has led many projects aimed at ensuring the city provides a safe environment for its residents. “Something that has set Southlake apart from other communities from the very beginning was the development of a long-term master plan,” Terrell says. “And one of the basic principles at the top of the master plan list is safety.” Terrell was instrumental in setting up the Crime Control Protection District (CCPD) tax that paid for the new DPS facilities, which he says “represent not only architecturally award-winning, state-of-the-art public-safety facilities providing top notch service to our community, but also further exemplify this city’s ability to work together to accomplish great things.”

The expansion and development of over 300 acres of parks, such as North Park and Bicentennial Park, which included new baseball fields, Miracle Field, a new children’s playground and the Marq, is part of the larger picture. The Marq, Southlake’s soon-to-be community center, has been in the works for 10 to 12 years—and Terrell has been part of the project since the beginning. It is one of the developments he is most proud of. Phase I will include the construction of an events hall, multipurpose conference and meeting spaces, a club lounge, catering kitchen, senior center and events space, and is expected to be completed in late 2015. Adjacent to the Marq and also in Bicentennial Park, Miracle Field is home to Southlake’s Miracle League, an organization that gives children

free time to spend with his family, whom counts as his No. 1 priority. Terrell explains that his children have only ever known him as a Southlake city official—he’s been in office since his oldest, Jacob, was an infant and before his daughter, Jordan, was born. There have been many activities that, while not lost completely, were not as commonplace in the Terrell family as they would have liked. One such family activity Terrell and his wife are both looking forward to? Family dinners. “We have two active kids—one is a graduating senior,” she says. “It will be nice on the nights that the kids are home for dinner to

It gave us experiences we would not have had, and I believe it helped teach our children the value of serving others, even if it meant making sacrifices on a personal level.”

Building Relationships and young adults with special needs the opportunity to play baseball. “It is great to see the city invest in those who can’t necessarily play baseball with other kids,” Terrell says. “The Miracle League is looking out for a part of the community that is mentally and physically impaired, and it not only provides something for those that are challenged, but it also gives something to our other kids who are not physically or mentally challenged in partnering with one another. It’s one of those projects that I take pride in as a city leader—having the entire city come together.” Southlake’s former mayor Andrew Wambsganss (2003–2009) elaborates, Terrell is responsible the myriad ways the city has been able to join and work together. “John’s main focus in all of the projects he has initiated, led and overseen—the DPS facilities, the park systems, the enhancements of roads and sidewalk systems—are all for one purpose: to maintain the quality of life we have all become accustomed to in Southlake.”

Terrell is the first to tell you none of the projects and programs during his tenure were done single handedly. When asked about his work, he is quick to mention others first. “We have one of the best city staffs on the planet,” he says. “You name it—every department has incredible elected leaders. The community should also understand the city would not be in the condition it is in today without the strong staff of hired individuals as well.” There is a mutual respect amongst his peers and colleagues. Southlake’s City Manager Shana K. Yelverton says Terrell has always been willing to do whatever it takes to make Southlake an outstanding community. “He has applied his considerable intellect, strong work ethic and inexhaustible energy to the job of mayor,” Yelverton says. “It has always been obvious to me that he really cares about Southlake and the people who live here, and he has developed considerable expertise in the years of his involvement. to put in as much time as it takes to take care of city business.” And the personal and professional connections Terrell made over the past 16 years as a city official have not just been with those of voting age. He recalls some mayoral duties that required no pomp and circumstance. “One of the things I have enjoyed doing the most as mayor is going to speak to second grade students at the elementary schools,” he says. “I will tell you as mayor of the city of Southlake, second graders think you are a rock star. They also think you make a lot of money.” However, what may be surprising to those second graders, and perhaps other city residents, is that being mayor of Southlake is an unpaid position.

Even without a public title attached to his name, citizen John Terrell still has plans for Southlake. “I am ever hopeful that the city will continue to thrive with caring leaders who want what is best for the city as a whole; leaders with vision, creative new ideas and a passion to get things done; leaders who listen to the citizens that elected them to represent their interests.” Having been entrusted for the last six years by the citizens of Southlake to lead these efforts, Terrell explains that summarizing the past 16 years is a hard concept to put into only a few words. “It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve this community with my fellow council members and the many volunteers on numerous boards and commissions that made what has been accomplished possible. “I plan to stay very involved—you just won’t see me on cable every other Tuesday night. This community is thriving too much, and there are too many things to do. I will probably continue to volunteer in numerous ways and on various boards and commissions—if the city will continue to have me.”

I booked a big family vacation, and purchased trip cancellation insurance just in case— so I’m protected no matter what, right? Maybe. When it comes to trip cancellation plans and other forms of travel insurance, you definitely want to read the fine print to be sure the policy you buy covers the specific pitfalls of the vacation you have planned. While many policies will reimburse travelers whose trips are cancelled or interrupted by natural disasters, not all policies define “natural disasters” the same way. So, for example, if your travel takes you to a country with active volcanoes— like Costa Rica or Iceland— make sure the travel insurance plan you are considering lists volcanic activity as a covered event.

The Weigel family at the beach: (L to R) Ryan, Royce, RJ, KC, Karly and Cheylee

Eldest daughter Karly, a law student at the University of Kansas, wouldn’t let geography deter her or her three siblings from showing their mom how much they care. Despite the distance, Karly teamed up with Ryan, a freshman at Cornell, and Cheylee and Royce, still at Carroll ISD to honor their mom in our decade old contest. “My sweet firstborn Karly has given me a big surprise,” said our tenth annual winner KC Weigel, “I've read your mom essays every year and never ever thought it might be me!”

O

With smart phone at the ready, Karly was able to read her heartwarming essay as her siblings also shared in the short-lived but sincere moment with their mother. After the emotional reading, KC received more than $2,000 worth of gifts from retailers including Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers, Corinthian Wellness Spa, The Southlake Hilton and BluDoor Studios amongst others. Happy tears were noticeable in mom’s eyes, knowing she’s raised children that no matter the distance, will always stay connected through the bonds of motherly love.

ur mother was present for our small and big moments. When the four us were brought home from the hospital over the years, our family grew in size and our house grew with warmth, love and laughter. Our first steps and babbled words were in front of her. She witnessed many of the big moments early on in our development. With sticky fingers we created countless school projects with the help of our mother’s endless patience and creative touch. We told her our secrets and aspirations, changing our minds daily between “growing up” to become astronauts, firefighters or dolphin trainers. The conversations about our interests and thoughts were small moments that shaped who we are today. From our countless injuries and trips to the hospital, our mother was our warrior when dealing with the doctors and nurses. She was persistent that we receive the best treatment possible. She knew how to balance toughness with love and patience during our recovery and helped each one of us rise above our injuries. Thank you for being our champion and angel during the big and frightening moments. Our middle and high school years were filled with changing emotions and independence. Between jam-packed after school schedules, learning to drive and telling her often that our friends were “cooler” than family time, she stuck by us. Even when we were less than lovable, she smiled and hugged us with the same motherly love. These years included big moments of growing up and making decisions about our futures. Then one day, she blinked. The four young children she nurtured throughout the years had grown. Two children have graduated and one graduates in June. The baby of the family graduates in two years. Even though the house will be quiet and empty, the love and memories will keep our hearts full. Every lesson, big or small, has shaped each one of us into intelligent and loving young adults who have the power to help and change people’s lives. Her countless hours of mentoring through the laughs and tears was not in vain. She taught us to love ourselves and each other. If not for our mother, our lives would be darker and a lot quieter without the roar of her laughter. She has watched the beautiful progression of her four children become young adults and we thank her for the tireless and abundant love she has for us. Thank you for the hugs and kisses when we were born and the ‘final goodbye’ hugs and kisses when we went off to college. On this Mother’s Day, we say ‘thank you’ mom for loving us unconditionally and reminding us to smile and laugh each day because tomorrow is not guaranteed. She witnessed the big moments of development and cherished the small moments of our triumph and dreams. Thank you for the lives you continue to touch, especially ours. Best Burger Joints 2015

ith a whopping 73 percent of our readers admitting to eating at a dedicated hamburger joint multiple times per month, it only seemed fitting that our roundup of the area’s best burgers come directly from you. Our condolences to the megaconglomerate, special sauce slingers whose global brethren may call this area home—by our definition, a burger joint must primarily serve hamburgers and commit to do so at a cost somewhere above that of a fountain soda. Also by definition, a burger joint could not condone the use of a cloth napkin at any point during the dining experience. Everyone in between was added to our list and therefore up for your approval of their burgers, fries, shakes and service.

Burger Supreme John "Johnny B" Finlayson on Simplicity, Service and making the Hometown Cheeseburger

I

n 2003 when John Finlayson, better known as “Johnny B,” opened his namesake burger joint there were less than 30 restaurants in Southlake. A rare occurrence in a city now home to more than 150 eateries, Johnny B’s Burgers & Shakes is not a chain, but a single family-owned and operated restaurant. After a dozen years and dozens of competitors, Finlayson and Johnny B’s have proven that simplicity still reigns supreme, at least when it comes to our reader’s choice for the area’s top burger joint. “It’s been a fun, family experience for us,” says Finlayson of his restaurant, “all three of my kids worked here when they went to Carroll. My wife Sandi was the point person, and she absolutely loved it, and I put some time in as well.” When the Finlaysons started Johnny B’s more than 12 years ago they set out with the simple motto to be the hometown cheeseburger place. As told to us through our reader’s choice survey, it was time well spent. Johnny B’s Burgers & Shakes not only took home the honors for Best Burger, but also Best Customer Service. At Johnny B’s, simplicity starts with the delivery of the day’s fresh ingredients. You would expect nothing less from the boy who grew up behind the counter of his father’s diner or from the man whose executive experience with Ryder Systems, the multi-billion dollar logistics company, taught him plenty about inventory management. Even with a lifetime of experience, Finlayson aims to keep both his menu and his inventory modest. Tenured cooks who have been part of the family for more than a decade expertly prepare the old-fashioned, thin patties, which are stacked as many as three high on fresh baked sourdough buns and adorned with traditional toppings of fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions. “We don’t look at ourselves as a gourmet cheeseburger place,” says Finlayson. “We don’t follow the latest crazes. The old-fashioned cheeseburger is still a staple in the U.S.” Despite the admission, Finlayson’s community pride does allow for one themed burger. For those who like a kick of heat, the aptly named Dragon Burger serves it up and then some on their triple cheeseburger topped with jalapeños and a heaping helping of Big John’s Championship Chile. “Everything is fresh,” says Finlayson, “we don’t even own a freezer. We get our meat and produce fresh daily, and you can taste the difference. Our French fries are hand-peeled, hand-cut and cooked to order. It doesn’t get better than that.” Customers agree, and Finlayson knows so first hand, but not because of social media or integrated market research. “I like the buzz of the place. It’s a different day every day. There are so many regulars that I’m personal friends with that it’s almost like inviting them into my house.” When it comes to customer service Finlayson doesn’t do it alone. He relies on the hard working kids who come from the very families he serves day in and day out. Johnny B’s makes it their goal to employ up to 20 area high school students at any given time. Generally responsible with greeting customers, working the registers and making milkshakes, Johnny B’s employees are trained in two simple responsibilities: take care of the customers and have fun doing it. Of the one hundred or more Carroll students Johnny B’s has employed over the years Finlayson admits, “I’m real proud of all the kids. They work hard, and learn social skills, math skills and how to interact with customers.” Finlayson is also quick to admit how many come back from their college breaks to work extra shifts or even just enjoy a burger. A further testament to the fun environment enjoyed in front of and behind the counter. Consistently superior in its fresh and never frozen menu offerings, Johnny B’s also enjoys a consistent level of community support from his employees, and loyal customers to the recent kudos in our survey. Finlayson admits, “I’m flattered and appreciative of all the feedback. I hope we can continue to serve the community the way we always have.”

In the world of the better burger it’s all about the freshness and the experience. At Mooyah in Southlake, they add their own spin to both. As to be expected of today’s fast casual burger joints there are no freezers. In order to take freshness up a notch, each Mooyah location bakes their buns fresh on premises. As for the experience, the fun Ben & Jerry’s meets Austin weird vibe takes hold the moment you walk through the front door. A giant Mooyah Southlake mural takes center stage letting you know this particular location is a proud member of the community. To better serve families with a wide variety of tastes and those looking for healthier fare, Mooyah offers turkey burgers, veggie burgers and salads as part of their menu options as well as whole-wheat buns and sweet potato fries. Although not as extreme as other area restaurants, Mooyah burgers have garnered an enthusiastic following. Fresh buns and a wide selection of burger toppings aside, what sets this establishment apart, according to our survey, is the quality and variety of their fresh made ice cream shakes. Sure they have vanilla, chocolate and strawberry down cold, but with ten flavors to choose from, the Plano-based franchise has made the most of the mix-in. Mooyah serves your sweet tooth famously by one-upping the traditional shake with iconic names like Hershey’s, Oreo, M&M’s and Reese’s. Come for the burger, but definitely save room for dessert.

Twisted Root Burger Company 101 S. Oak St. Roanoke, TX Best Menu Variety With so many great burger joints to chose from so close to home, it’s nice to see readers getting out of town to get their burger fix. Our survey respondents had nothing but good things to say about Roanoke’s Twisted Root Burger Company. Getting plenty of comments for its quirky order recognition system and its variety of milkshakes—both of which are best enjoyed by adults, Twisted Root Burger Co. has proven they are more than hype and well worth the drive. Chosen by this year’s survey respondents as having the best menu variety, Twisted Root serves up gourmet ingredients atop beef, turkey or vegan burgers. Like those adult milkshakes, the kids probably aren’t going to enjoy the nuanced flavors of such upscale additions like Glenview Farms goat cheese, Danish Blue Cheese, portabello mushrooms or fresh Hatch green chile peppers. These toppings and many others become famous with names as special as their flavor profiles. Case in point, the Ranch Hand gets its giddy-up from lavish amounts of aged Swiss cheese, bacon and a loving spoonful of house-made peppercorn ranch dressing. The Sexy Hawaiian is a well-balanced spicy sweet mouthful crowned with pineapple salsa, teriyaki sauce, prosciutto and Jalapeño Jack cheese. But if there is a defining burger in both name and plate presence it just may be the Kevin Bacon. There are more than three degrees separating this star from any other bacon burger. Like any self-respecting burger joint, Kincaid’s prides itself on using the freshest ingredients possible, starting with their meat which is cut and ground fresh daily at every one of their six locations. The process for burger greatness started in 1946 with the establishment of the Kincaid Grocery and Market. Twenty years later the store’s butcher, O.R. Gentry, began selling hamburgers to maximize the sales from excess beef, which he was grinding up daily. The plan worked well and a year later Gentry purchased Kincaid’s, and what started with one small grill on Fort Worth’s Camp Bowie Boulevard grew to five including the alwaysbusy Southlake location. Green walls and communal seating gives a feeling of grade-school nostalgia not lost on patrons or their soon-to-be nostalgic children. Checkerboard tablecloths and loads of local photos and paper clippings only add to an environment that is as close to the family picnic as you can get without holding a spatula yourself. Kincaid’s only uses natural vegetarian-fed beef resulting in burgers that are hormone, antibiotic, and preservative free. Unless you order otherwise, these tried and true burgers come with mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. For something special, try the signature Cowtown Burger—pimento cheese, grilled onions and grilled jalapeños.

Five Guys, Burgers and Fries Southlake Town Square 242 State Street, Southlake, TX Best Fries

A Washington D.C. favorite dating back to its humble beginnings in 1986, the Murrell brothers created a cult following around fresh ingredients and hand-cut fries. Perfecting the system the brothers then proceeded to sell out their inventory of 300 national stores in less than 18 months. Now there are more than 1,000 locations in 47 states across the country. Five Guys came to Southlake in 2010 and promptly made a name for themselves taking home Southlake Style’s Reader’s Choice Best Burger honors in the same year. Winner of this year’s award for Best Fries, Five Guys are more than up front about how they are prepared. Cases of potatoes labeled by location are piled in the dining room just so you know where your fresh cut fries hailed from. Fried in cholesterol-free, 100-percent pure peanut oil, the fries are consistently crispy on the outside and soft and mealy in the middle. Bring a friend, they are worth sharing, and a Five Guys serving of fries could almost serve their family if not yours. As for the burgers, they are something to behold as well. From A-1 sauce to jalapeños, Five Guys has enough topping options to create 250,000 different ordering options. No matter what’s atop your customized burger, it is always bookended by fresh grilled buns for that perfect first bite texture.

Like Kincaid’s, Snuffer’s is preceded by a decades old north Texas reputation for glory on the grill. Starting further east over 30 years ago in Dallas’ Lower Greenville district, Snuffer’s came to Southlake’s Town Square shortly after the second phase expanded in 2006. Snuffer’s is very generous with the toppings—eating their enormous burgers without wearing them can be a bit of a challenge. Catering more to the adult audience, bacon reigns supreme across specialty burger options like the sweet and savory Hickory BBQ Cheeseburger, the tangy Bleu Cheese Bacon Burger and the Texas favorite Bacon Guacamole Swiss Burger—all of which are served on a poppy seed bun. No matter which burger you choose, no order is complete without a side of Snuffer’s Cheddar Cheese Fries. Hitting tables and stomachs since 1978, a large order takes a plate of nachos head-on with its fusion of Idaho potatoes, fresh grated Wisconsin cheddar cheese and optional bacon, chives and jalapeños that will feed the entire table. Thanks to a delicious range of half pound burgers, their renowned cheddar fries and a full bar, Snuffer’s Southlake location is worth a true sit down experience. Seasonal Plastic Surgery Mark A Bishara, M.D.

There are seasons for everything, but one thing you wouldn’t expect to be seasonal is cosmetic surgery. Any plastic surgeon, however, will tell you that the spring is the season for breast augmentations and liposuction, and the season for facelifts is right after Christmas. And many other procedures are more common during certain times of the year. The reasons for this seasonality become obvious when you consider each procedure. During the spring, women start thinking about that dreaded bathing suit. They try them on and might notice a little fat that wasn’t there last year, or they might wish they filled it out better in certain areas. Since it takes a month or so to look reasonable in a bathing suit after cosmetic surgery, by July 4, if the surgery hasn’t been performed yet, many women wait until after the summer. Make a Quick Getaway And make sure Kate Spade is your accessory

N

eed to make a quick getaway with the girls this weekend? Summer is the perfect time of year for last minute plans and first class fun. Whether sitting poolside at your favorite resort or sinking your toes in the sand by the ocean, there are one or two things to think about. Too bad you can’t just hop on a plane to Maui and be done with it! It’s easy enough to get caught up in the details of which beaches and restaurants make the itinerary, but at least you now know what luggage to take. If plans are just for the weekend, the Classic Nylon Lyla Weekender bag by Kate Spade is designed to help fit all the essentials—even if that does just mean six swimsuits and sunscreen. This travel bag is bright green, the it-color for this season, and covered with big pink, purple, blue and white flowers that will cheer up any outfit. Made with a 14-karat light gold plated hardware, the weekender is also embossed with the Kate Spade New York signature and light gold spade on the front. A zipper at the top can completely close the bag, keeping your belongings safe from spilling out while relaxing at the beach. An optional, adjustable cross-body strap is included for easy carry through the airport, or long walks around town. Take off the cross-body strap to easily convert the weekender bag to an oversized purse. If having a go-to bag that holds all the necessities is a high priority, then Kate Spade had you in mind when designing this weekender bag. It’s brightly colored, light enough to carry and big enough to hold everything a girl could need for those quick weekend getaways.

Many of you may have frequented an old school drugstore in your hometown and experienced the classic soda fountain. As the carbonated soda is dispensed—waiting for a splash of syrup to be mixed in with a long stainless steel spoon— you watched in anticipation, thinking, this soda would pair nicely with a toasted pimento cheese or tuna salad sandwich. I enjoyed this very experience in my hometown of Grandfield, Oklahoma, at Harvest Drug & Gifts. I would walk from my elementary school and in middle school catch a ride downtown to have lunch with my siblings many times over those years and have fond memories of those lunches. Remedy, located on the rejuvenated and freshly scrubbed lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas is the newest creation of Elias Pope, owner of nearby Paleo focused HG Sply Co., and is helmed by Executive Chef Danyele McPherson. McPherson formerly served as Chef de Cuisine of The Grape and was a contestant on Top Chef. According to

Elias, whom we met at the conclusion of our meal, the renovation of the space took longer than expected, but they are pleased with the results of their efforts. The space is narrow but has high ceilings with beautiful art deco chandeliers that line the center space and etched mirrored arches that frame the space. Elias shared that they etched the glass themselves with each piece taking a significant amount of time to complete. The space isn’t overly fussy and leans toward minimalism with neutral grays and muted colors. There are booths along the wall and in the center, the seating is a theme seen in HG Sply Co., that looks as if it was plucked from a postmodern furniture catalog making for a comfortable seating environment. As you take in the menu, you will notice the iconography around the border representing the staff, describing menu items or featuring witty comments. the center, breakfast/brunch selections. The back of the menu reveals that the origins of the drink menu are firmly rooted in soda fountains with some compelling options along with craft beers. We selected Texas Grapefruit and Hystrix Lime sodas as our beverages for our late lunch and dove into the menu from there. The two most popular appetizer items are the jalapeño-chive hushpuppies served with hot sauce butter, and their house made pimento cheese served with warm buttermilk biscuits and a side of pickles canned in house. Our server informed us that Remedy’s pimento cheese is different from store bought because it features much more cheese versus other ingredients. We took her recommendation. Smearing the very cheesy pimento spread on the warm buttermilk biscuits took me back to those drugstore lunches and was a fabulous way to begin our meal on a cold, rainy day. Next up, we selected Remedy’s BLT which stands for pork belly, lettuce and tomato on griddled challah bread slices smeared with a green tomato chow-chow and citrus-black pepper cream cheese. The pork belly is cured on-site and this sandwich is rich, flavorful and more than enough to share along with the side of fries. To finish off our meal, we had a difficult decision to make between their rotating cast of pies, a shake or a sundae. We chose a banana ice cream sundae topped with shaved coconut and whipped cream. The ice cream is made fresh on-site (you see the theme of made from scratch on site continues) and it tastes just like the bananas it is made with. Remedy is a back-to-basics eatery that excels at creating dishes that are simple yet flavorful by keeping the menu pared down. Take your date or a small group for an outing there soon. Chardonnay for a Cause OneHope Wine has socially conscience connoisseurs buzzing Inspired by a friend diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a group of young California-based entrepreneurs set out to create a socially conscience wine brand dedicated to supporting nonprofit organizations year round. Determined to make a difference, the co-founders came together to start OneHope Wine in 2007. Starting with just $10,000 in the bank, they purchased a small storage unit in Manhattan Beach and started selling wine out of their cars. Delivering on their promise to support national causes, OneHope donates half of the profits from every bottle sold to causes ranging from childhood hunger and breast cancer to national deforestation and even the cause of your choice. To date the company has delivered more than one million meals to children, 2,000 mammograms to women without healthcare, and planted almost 40,000 trees in U.S. forests. But it’s not just the causes they serve, it is also the cases served that have wine connoisseurs buzzing. In 2009 the budding brand teamed with Rob Mondavi Jr., of the Michael Mondavi winemaking family, and as you would expect the wine is outstanding. The partnership centers on custom blended varietals from Napa, Sonomoa and California’s Central Coast. There’s a Sparkling Brut with aromas of green apple, nectarine and fresh baked bread. A case of which would equate to 25 meals for children. Or perhaps the strong black cherry flavor and oak barrel aging of OneHope’s Cabernet Sauvignon will make you smile. One thing’s for sure, the profits will bring needed therapy to a child with autism. For those with a specific taste, and cause in mind we suggest the Chardonnay Reserve Santa Barbara County 2009. Hailing from vineyards of the Santa Maria Valley and as far South as the Sta Rita Hills, this expertly prepared Chardonnay is a harvest of apricot and apple fruit aromas. The acidity is nicely balanced with creamy oak and rich butter notes thanks to its partial fermentation in French oak barrels. Perfect for the summer months ahead it pairs well with shellfish, chicken and grilled vegetable dishes. In addition to multiple 90+ point ratings, more than 100 medals have been awarded to wines from the OneHope portfolio. Quality wine that finishes with more than $1.4 million donated to date? We all can drink to that.

good eats

The Great Outdoors Top area patios Maybe you’re trying to catch some fresh-air during brunch with the family or find a romantic spot for date night al fresco. From water-features and playgrounds to cigar bars and lounge chairs, these hotspots will have you and yours covered no matter the occasion. Our top pick goes to Grapevine’s Mí Día From Scratch that puts a rustic contemporary spin on its outdoor décor, making the space feel inviting and industrial all at the same time. So head outside to relax and toss back a margarita while your guacamole is prepared tableside by the attentive staff. An industrial-chic roof with zig-zag lighting makes it a cool place to escape the sun or to share a meal-for-two after dusk. Two partially shaded outdoor spaces with comfy Villastyle seating make Brio Tuscan Grille in Southlake Town Square a prime spot for grabbing some friends, ordering a bottle and settling in for some serious people-watching. In addition to the usual hubbub of town-square foot traffic, the view also includes the town square fountain, which makes it ideal for date night. In search of even more options for outdoor dining? Then head to Il Calabrese, where you’ll find three patios to choose from. Up on the second floor, a chic cigar bar awaits those who prefer to puff, while on the first floor, a patio wraps around two sides of the building. Whichever patio you choose, fresh flavors, delicious dishes and familiar Italian recipes await you in Il Calabrese’s luxurious environs. If you count your fast-food chain’s one-two punch of playground-time and quick eats to entertain your brood, try trading up for a glass of Pinot Grigio, a good-for-you chefprepared entrée, a playground and live music on Thursday to Saturday nights? Such a wonderland exists at Southlake’s Central Market, which delivers a family-friendly space to sit back and relax while the kiddos wear themselves out. Our final entry pairs a bird’s eye view with lounge chairs in a rooftop trellis-covered space overlooking the excitement of Southlake Town Square. While Campania’s authentic Neopolitan pizza is cooked at a blistering 900 degrees, the restaurant’s true claim to fame is its cool second-story patio replete with refreshing bar and water feature. Yes, summer is nearly here, but that’s no reason hibernate indoors for four months. Go ahead, strap on some sandals, throw on some shorts and prepare to kick back and relax in style, enjoying some excellent eats, drinks—and fresh air.

hat’s the best way to swing into summer? Watch golf pros duke it out on the greens. And this May, that’s what it’s all about in North Texas, as two of PGA’s longest running tournaments tee off for two straight weeks of sportsmanship, talent and tradition. It begins with the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Fort Worth’s Colonial Country Club May 18-24. Since the first tournament began in 1946, the Invitational at Colonial continues to hold the rank as longest running event on the PGA Tour that is still held on its original site. As one of the PGA’s most prestigious events, the Invitational at Colonial brings together the best of the best in golf—approximately 125 players are invited to play based on past rankings and winnings. Following the Invitational at the Colonial is the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship May 25-31, held at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas. The Byron Nelson Championship’s roots trace back to 1944, when golf pro Bryon Nelson won the Texas Victory Open at Lakewood Country Club. Since then, the event has become the 9th

eil Diamond has hit the road in support of his latest album, Melody Road, with an international tour that will take him everywhere from Dallas to Australia. Dallas is the second (and final) stop on his Texas tour dates, and we bet he’ll save the best for last. Get ready to sing, dance and sway along to all of your Neil Diamond favorites, from “Sweet Caroline” to “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and of course, “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.” At age 74, Neil Diamond has surpassed what anyone would consider a successful career. In 1984, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his work, which includes penning the Monkees’ classic track “I’m a Believer.” In 2011, Diamond was

brought into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and today remains as the third best-selling adult contemporary artist of all time. After 40 years with the same label, he switched to Capitol Records and released Melody Road in October 2014, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard charts. Golden Globe Award and Grammy Award winner Neil Diamond continues to gain admiration from fans around the world for his energetic stage presence and dedication to his music. Local fans will have the opportunity to enjoy an evening with the two-time Hall of Famer on May 28 at the American Airlines Center. If one thing’s for certain, it’s obvious this Brooklyn native will be rocking for years to come—and we’ll be cheering him along every step of the way.

North Texas is home to more than a handful of golfing pros, and each May they enjoy an extended homecoming of sorts thanks to not one, but two stellar PGA events—the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Fort Worth’s Colonial Country Club and the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas. Before stepping onto the tee box at Colonial, we caught up with one of the world’s top golfers—Texas A&M Aggie Alum and Colleyville resident Ryan Palmer— on golf, family and giving back to kids across Texas.

What does it mean to play in front of the hometown crowds in North Texas?

You didn’t waste much time in earning your first win, or in starting the Ryan Palmer Foundation (RPF). Please tell us more.

Coming home to play the Colonial and Byron Nelson is special to me. Not only am I staying home those two weeks with my family, I'm playing in front of lots of friends and family. I am a member at Colonial and spend most of my time playing there. Colonial is the best!

We started the Ryan Palmer Foundation in 2003. I started thinking about ways for me to give back to the area where I was raised. I have always thought about what the people of Amarillo, Texas, mean to me and wanted to give back to them and the city. We started out by doing little things with kids in the area. We really started big by giving to the Northwest Texas Health Care Children's Hospital. We Built the RPF Healing Garden for those kids to go out and enjoy the outdoors while in the hospital. Also, we built the Palmer sports zone and Palmer Playhouse in the hospital for those kids who could not be outside. Computers, video game systems and numerous books and games were added to the rooms.

What will you do with your free time while at home? While at home I enjoy spending a few days doing nothing when I return from a trip. I love taking my daughter Maddy to gymnastics and my son Mason to hockey and baseball. I always love those times when my wife Jennifer and I get out together and with friends. Truluck’s has to be our favorite spot for a glass of wine—love the bar area there.

How does being home affect your day-to-day preparation? I try and get my workouts and practice times with Randy Smith while my kids are in school and also time on the range at Vaquero. I try and get a few rounds in at Vaquero and of course the big game at Colonial. And I always make sure I'm home for dinner.

Where does Colonial CC rank amongst all the great courses you’ve played? What are your favorite courses? (Any in North Texas?) Colonial is definitely in the top three just because of what the place means to me. Pebble Beach is probably my favorite place to visit. Aside from playing Colonial, the Masters is the one tournament you have to and want to play—the coolest event by far.

You earned a PGA Tour Card in 2003 and your first Tour win shortly thereafter in 2004. What has been your most memorable moment in golf? You remember every moment that stands out. Shooting 62 to win my first event, making a 10-footer on last hole to win in '08, winning the Sony Open in '10. But I will say, I will always cherish the day I was given my PGA Tour card in '03 at the Web.Com Tour Championship.

What is the Ryan Palmer Foundation currently up to? Our drive now is “Birdies 4 Brighter Smiles.” People can go online and donate any amount for every birdie I make during the season. The money for this program goes toward providing young kids with the proper dental care they need, whether it be braces, implants, or restorative care—what kids need to help boost their self esteem and to give them better dental health. I feel very blessed to give this to these kids. It puts the biggest smile on my face, and most importantly, it gives the kids something to smile about.

Your partnership with Southlake based Kids Matter International has helped many children here in North Texas and abroad. I wanted to get more involved in the area Jen and I call home. We brought the idea to give school backpacks to KMI’s Around the Block event to a good friend of mine Coye Conner. Jen and I love being able to give to the kids and we have even taken our son to help pass them out. The partnership has been awesome!

Through the partnership you were recognized as the KMI 2015 Synergy Award recipient. How did that feel? Jen and I were shocked when we received the Synergy Award. It was totally unexpected. I was very happy for Jen to be recognized because I know the time she puts into our foundation and our family, and how much she cherishes helping Kids Matter. I am hoping for some big plans to happen with Kids Matter and our plans to give back even more in the future to the DFW area.

We have to ask, what is your favorite North Texas Burger Joint? Favorite burger is Kincaid’s. I order the half-pound Cowtown style—sautéed jalapeños and onions. Wow!

ZERO TO 60

Launching in late summer with more horsepower than its rivals Mercedes Benz and BMW V-8s, the new 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is capable of 0-60 performance in just 3.7 seconds.

reviously honored as the 2014 Motor Trend Car of the Year and a Car and Driver’s 10 Best, the Cadillac CTS has enjoyed a place atop the box office of luxury sedans. Only amongst Detroit’s auto elite could a car of such stature receive a Robocop-inspired overhaul of power and technology. In the CTS-V, Cadillac engineers made their award-winner faster and stronger by enlisting a 6.2L, 640 horsepower V-8 engine under its new, lightweight carbon fiber hood. Like any highly anticipated blockbuster, the CTS-V is slated to launch in late summer, and when it does (insert dramatic explosion here), it will become Cadillac’s most powerful car in the company’s 112-year history. The latest installment of Cadillac’s V-Series, which started a decade ago, will register top speeds of 200 mph. But before you think of this paddle-shifting speed demon as just another overbearing sports car—think again. The CTS-V’s complementing eight-speed automatic transmission has been fine tuned for outstanding shift-response times. Smaller steps between gears equate to greater efficiency within the supercharged engine’s 6,400-rpm sweet spot.

Rethinking of the comprehensive suspension elements has also led to a smoother ride thanks to the car’s Magnetic Ride Control, which dampens choppy terrain 40 percent faster than the CTS. Add to this driver-selectable modes that electronically calibrate performance variables for touring, sport and track driving conditions, and you have essentially two cars in one: a luxury sedan with sophisticated road manners and a track-capable sports car straight from the factory. Complimenting the powerful yet smooth ride is a performance-oriented interior cabin that boasts Recaro performance seating. Pneumatic bolster controls adjust the heated and cooled aniline leather seats 20 different ways. The overall experience of the seats and the G-meter customizable heads up display inspire confidence for both the driver and front passenger. Cadillac’s proprietary CUE system incorporates next level voice recognition with Bluetooth connectivity to make the most of the 12.3-inch instrument panel and the car’s Bose Surround Sound audio package. In the CTS-V, Cadillac has taken an already high achiever and given it a makeover of sci-fi proportions. The reality is, Cadillac’s next level of performance and quality starts at $71,200. A modest price when compared to what Officer Alex Murphy paid in 1987.
