The Good Stuff As I’m writing this letter on a rainy Monday morning, the weekend still fresh in my mind, I can’t help but think about the good stuff. For me, it’s making memories with family and friends. This time of year, many of those memories are made outdoors, whether it’s getting some fresh air with my toddler at Bicentennial Park or cheering on my budding Dragon athlete at a flag football game. The good stuff is also sharing moments over amazing food. (Ya gotta eat, right?) Great food is one of the reasons this issue was particularly exciting to put together. Every year, we roll out our Readers’ Choice survey to uncover the area’s best restaurants. We’ve polled readers on everything from pizza places to burger joints and, this year, we asked you to tell us about your favorite Mexican food. As someone who’s always up for tacos and guac (and maybe a skinny margarita, too), I loved seeing the survey results pour in. Turn to page 26 to see how your favorite Mexican places stacked up. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, our “Masters of Mexican” feature provides plenty of ideas to keep Mom fed. But because a sizzling plate of fajitas doesn’t last long, we also share some enduring ways to celebrate moms, from sweet treasures and quirky gifts to a bathroom addition that’s fit for a queen. And as a shout-out to incredible moms everywhere, we profile Gigi Butler, the inspiring single mother and founder of Park Village’s new bakery, Gigi’s Cupcakes. While this issue is packed with many things that are good, we also shed some light on an issue that’s far from it: identity theft. It’s a crime that wreaks havoc on millions of people each year—some right here in our community. A poll on SouthlakeStyle.com revealed that 18 percent of readers have experienced identity theft once; nine percent have had it happen twice. Flip to page 48 to read a local victim’s story and learn ways to guard your family against one of the country’s fastest-growing crimes. Meeting of the (Musical) Minds When Eric Clapton released “Slowhand” nearly four decades ago, no one could predict it would go platinum, specifically RIAA-certified 3x-platinum. And after working with legendary producer Glyn Johns on the 1977 nowiconic album, Clapton has reunited with Johns for his 23rd studio release, “I Still Do.” Clapton remarked this “was a long and overdue opportunity to work with Glyn Johns again.” The 12-track record includes some original songs by Clapton, but most importantly, Clapton’s legendary guitar work. It’s clear the 18-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist fulfilled his promise with “I Still Do.”

Everyone loves a good detective drama, and Fox delivers its version of a Sherlock Holmes-era backdrop for such a series in “Houdini & Doyle.” The Holmes reference was intended, as the main characters of the adventure drama include author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephan Mangan, “Episodes”) and magician Harry Houdini (Michael Weston, “House”). Inspired by true events, Houdini and Doyle—who were best friends during their time (mid-20th century)—assist the first female constable of the London Metropolitan Police Force, Adelaide Stratton (Rebecca Liddiard, “Man Seeking Woman”), in inexplicable and sometimes supernatural cases that no one else wants.
Past Meets Present In Marvel’s X-Men universe, Apocalypse is the first and most powerful mutant. Waking up after thousands of years can make anyone cranky. Now immortal, invincible and bent on creating a new world order, Apocalypse recruits a team of mutants, including Magneto (Michaels Fassbender), to carry out his plan. A sequel to “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” this film sees the return of the younger versions of Magneto, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence). However, Marvel fans can look forward to some familiar faces of the future. This marks the ninth installment in the X-Men universe film series.

CARROLL SENIOR HIGH NAMED ONE OF AMERICA’S SMARTEST PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS Dragons have a new accolade to their name: Carroll Senior High School (CSHS) landed on a prestigious list of the country’s smartest public high schools, coming in at No. 49 out of more than 23,000 public high schools across the United States. Research company Niche ranked schools’ academics by key factors including SAT/ACT test scores and graduation rates. Scoring an overall A+ rating by Niche, CSHS is one of only three Metroplex schools to make the top-50 list. Dallas’ Highland Park High School ranked No. 22, and the School for the Talented & Gifted in Dallas came in at No. 8 on the list. Three other Texas schools (all Austinbased) also made the list: Westwood High School at No. 47, Westlake High School at No. 36 and the Liberal Arts & Science Academy at No. 3.

SOUTHLAKE WOMEN’S CLUB FOUNDATION SELECTED RECORD NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES Art in the Square is quite a success story. The first event had seven beneficiaries, and now the organization has surpassed $2.3 million in net proceeds and was able to help 30 charities in Northeast Tarrant County this year. This is a record number for Art in the Square. This year’s recipients are nonprofits that help women, families and children overcome challenges. CARROLL THEATRE DELIGHTED CROWDS WITH SPRING MUSICAL There were plenty of laughs and fun moments in Carroll Theatre’s spring musical, “Junie B. Jones,” last month. The engaging, fast-paced production was based on the award-winning series of books by author Barbara Park. The comical musical followed bespectacled Junie B. Jones and highlighted her adventures in first grade.

LADY DRAGONS TOOK HOME SECOND PLACE IN ALLISON MALONEY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT The Lady Dragon Water Polo team headed to The Woodlands last month to compete in the Allison Maloney Memorial Tournament. The out-of-district tourney was an opportunity for the girls to view teams they would be competing with at the state championships. The Lady Dragons surged ahead early in the tournament, beating Clear Lake 11 to 2 in the first round, St. Agnes 16 to 3 in the second round and Lamar 11 to 3 in the third round. The team lost the championship round to Cy-Creek by one point with a final score of 5 to 6.
SOUTHLAKE NAMED AMERICA’S FIFTH HIGHEST-EARNING CITY NerdWallet recently ranked Southlake fifth on its list of cities with the highest percentage of households earning more than $100,000 per year. “High earners in Southlake are the majority of residents: 71.2 percent of households make over $100,000 a year. Homebuyers seek out Southlake for its plentiful shopping opportunities and high-performing public schools, with an eight-time state champion high-school football team,” the site said of the city. The only other Texas city higher than Southlake was University Park. Colleyville came in sixth on the list. Other nearby cities on the list included Keller (No. 22), Frisco (No. 31), Coppell (No. 34) and Allen (No. 60). The list was comprised of 100 cities in total.

CEF ANNOUNCED 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CO-CHAIRS Calling all Dragons: Get ready for a Western-themed bash to top them all. Carroll Education Foundation (CEF) is kicking off its 20th Anniversary Celebration, themed Boot Scootin’ Dragons, September 10 at the Southlake Hilton. Heading up the anniversary event are cochairs Sarah Mason and Kathy Talley, who both have years of eventplanning experience under their belts. Talley said she is “honored to be chairing Boot Scootin’ Dragons. It is truly wonderful that the foundation has been supporting CISD students and teachers for 20 years, and we look forward to carrying on the tradition.” Mason added, “This year’s 20th Anniversary celebration is shaping up to be the biggest event to date, and we look forward to seeing our community parents and businesses to benefit CISD’s teachers and students.”
SOUTHLAKE NAMED THIRD-MOST CHARITABLE CITY IN NORTH TEXAS The Dallas Business Journal reported that the average annual contribution to charity per household in Southlake was $1,118.97 last year, making it third on a top-10 list of North Texas cities. Colleyville topped the list, averaging $1,250.79 per household. “You might notice on this year’s list we shook up the rankings a bit. Instead of only looking at total cash contributions to charities, we used Esri’s proprietary charitable rank index, which accounts for population and looks at charitable giving to household income ratios,” according to the report. Esri is a company that uses a geographic information system. The report indicated North Texas donated a total of $745 million to charity in 2015, which is a regional average of $338.27 per household. Also locally relevant and making the list were Flower Mound and Coppell (No. 5 and No. 8 respectively).

MAKE-A-WISH GRANTED THE WISH OF WALNUT GROVE KINDERGARTENER Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nonprofit founded in 1980 to grant wishes to children around the world who are living with lifethreatening illnesses, made a stop in Southlake and even brought along a special guest: Mickey Mouse. In March, kindergarteners and first graders at Walnut Grove Elementary School (WGES) gathered in the cafeteria for the surprise unveiling of a trip to Disney World for kindergarten student Lucas Sun. Students cheered with delight as Mickey Mouse entered the room and Sun learned that his wish had been granted. “We’ve heard about the reveals and seen them on the news, but we’ve never experienced them here,” said WGES Principal Mike Landers. “It was really cool. It’s the day before Spring Break, so it was the perfect time.”

SOUTHLAKE RESIDENT NAMED A WINNER IN ROAD WARRIOR CONTEST If you ever want to meet a real-life jetsetter, just talk to Southlake resident Emily Williams Knight. GRACE’S DRIVE INTO THE NIGHT A GLOWING SUCCESS Last month, GRACE hosted Drive Into the Night, its second-largest fundraising event of the year. Held at the Grapevine Golf Course, golfers enjoyed a barbecue dinner, craft beer, raffle prizes, and of course, a little lighthearted competition. Golfers played nine holes of golf with nothing but a glowin-the-dark golf ball and the light of the stars. Prizes were awarded to teams who placed first, second and third in putting, closest to the pin and longest drive.

BRIAN R. STEBBINS MEMORIAL PARK UNVEILED IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE Many Southlake residents knew the late Brian R. Stebbins, the driving force behind Southlake Town Square. And now they have a new way to honor his memory: the Brian R. Stebbins Memorial Park. Friends and community members gathered last month at a special ribboncutting and unveiling in the heart of our city. Cooper and Stebbins, Highland Landscaping and TBG Partners conceived the idea for the memorial park. Ian MacLean, president of Highland Landscaping, said at the ceremony, “This park is undoubtedly the most prominent project we’ve done as a company in our 14-year history.” Take a moment to visit the park at 305 Central Avenue.
MIRACLE LEAGUE FIELD HOSTED LONESTAR ROADRUNNERS The Lonestar Roadrunners, a local nonprofit Beepball baseball team comprised of all blind and visually impaired players, played at Southlake’s Miracle League Field last month. The sport is similar to softball in terms of hitting, fielding and pitching, but it has modified rules regarding scoring and outs. Sound-emitting bases and balls are used as well as audible pitchers and defensive spotters so that athletes can play without any sight. “We want to spread awareness that nothing is impossible—miracles do happen,” said Ozzy Calamaco, who has played for the team since 2012. “The best feeling is getting to hit the ball. Once a person hits that ball, they come alive. To be running freely without sight is an amazing feeling. Miracle League Field [helped] us to experience the miracle of America’s favorite pastime.”

ohn and Elizabeth Huffman are not just partners in life, but in work. This year they opened Black Door Home Co., a fullservice home renovation and improvement company.
Why Start a Business Together?
John and Elizabeth started Black Door Home Co. because they absolutely love home renovation and design. It does not intimidate them at all to take a serious eyesore and turn it into something beautiful. When they see severely outdated concepts, rather than get overwhelmed, they just see possibility. The couple first thought about doing this as a profession after buying their current home. They love that Southlake has an upscale, rural feel and they wanted to buy an older home that had all of Southlake’s charm wrapped up into it. They came upon the house while they were in between soccer games. It was outdated but had a great layout and they loved the lot. Elizabeth told John they could buy it under one condition–they had to do some major work first. The most important was ripping out the existing staircase and removing the blue popcorn ceilings before they moved in. They changed the entire house from top to bottom – literally – and made it a home that is a great fit for their family. They also fell in love with the process. After many friends and family asked for help and input during their own renovations, the couple started thinking about doing it as a business. The idea of owning something themselves and building it into the type of business they wanted was very appealing. After a few months of discussion and much prayer, they felt like the time was right to make it official.

Plus, Elizabeth homeschools their three children, ages nine, seven and five, so it truly is a family affair. They also have six chickens and a dog named Teddy Roosevelt. It’s a fun, lively, never-a-dull-moment life and they wouldn't have it any other way.

acos! Enchiladas! Fajitas! Mexican food that makes you want to say, “mmm…gimme más.” That’s exactly what we uncovered in our 2016 Readers’ Choice survey. We polled readers in a two-part survey on their favorite Mexican food in our part of town, honing in on the top tacos, margaritas, guacamole, tortillas, and also the best menu variety and atmosphere. The seven restaurants that rose to the top as finalists out of 20 area establishments bring the Tex, the Mex and a fiesta of flavors. It seems that our readers can relate to whoever said, “Life without Mexican food is like no life at all.” Our survey revealed that nearly half of you (47 percent) go out for Mexican food once a week, and almost a quarter (21 percent) of you enjoy it multiple times a week. Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant is indeed a chain establishment, but make no mistake: This Austin-based restaurant is churning out tortillas better than any mom-andpop kitchen. No mass-produced supermarket tortillas here; only fresh and homemade. When it comes to the tastiest tortillas, Chuy’s secured a solid 25 percent of the vote in our survey, followed by Mi Chula’s Good Mexican and Anamia’s Tex-Mex. Its secret? Hand-rolled tortillas made from scratch daily. Tortilla experts transform a few ingredients into a simple dough, which is then rolled out to become soft, melt-in-your-mouth spheres of flour, corn and bluecorn deliciousness. These tortillas then go into dishes such as the restaurant’s famous “Big As Yo’ Face” Burritos or house specialties such as the Chuychanga and Chicken Flautas. Or you can put the tortillas directly in your mouth. You don’t need a hearty filling or even a dab of butter to enjoy these babies; they’re perfect when they’re piping hot and plain. “Our fantastic tortilla ladies take pride in our food and their contribution to it,” says Brittany Martin, field marketing manager for Chuy’s restaurants. “Our food is made fresh several times a day in the kitchen, including the dough and masa for our tortillas. When you visit Chuy’s, the tortillas you order haven’t even been made yet.” On its website Chuy’s admits, “We don’t take anything seriously, except our food.” When founders Mike Young and John Zapp started the restaurant in 1982, they wanted to serve authentic, fresh Mexican food in a fun and funky environment. That’s exactly what they’ve been doing ever since. They’ve expanded the restaurant to 11 states, and in the process, given Mexican-food fans a taste of some of the best tortillas around.

B E ST Mi Cocina
Southlake Town Square 1276 Main St. BEST MARGARITAS The food is reason enough to go to Mi Cocina (it’s Zagat-rated as one of Dallas’ Most Popular and it also landed on Zagat’s Essential Dining list), but it’s the handcrafted margaritas that take this restaurant to the top. Southlake Style readers say the ’ritas at Mi Cocina are the best around. The local favorite got 29 percent of the vote, followed by Mi Dia From Scratch and Anamia’s Tex-Mex. Mi Cocina’s Mambo Taxi® (after which you might need a taxi) is downright legendary. “It’s not only our most popular margarita, but also what our restaurant is known for,” says Rosalinda Posoz, restaurant director for the Southlake location. The margarita is swirled with sangria for a deliciously potent beverage that’s perfect frozen but also good on the rocks. Some say it’s made with Everclear, but the menu (and the bartenders) won’t tell. Mi Cocina offers more than a dozen handmade margaritas with several different flavor profiles, whether you’re
into sweet, fruity, smoky or spicy. Some are crafted with little else than tequila and lime; others are more creatively cooling with fresh purées and muddled fruits. What makes each one special, says Posoz, is that it’s “made from scratch with only the highest quality ingredients.” So are margarita fans ordering their beverages frozen or on the rocks? Patrons like them both ways. The restaurant serves an even mix of the two varieties. A poll on SouthlakeStyle.com reveals 50 percent of readers prefer a frozen marg and 50 percent like it on the rocks. We’ll call it proof that margaritas are equally good in both forms. In addition to the Mambo Taxi, local favorites include the Jalapeño-Agave Margarita, which delivers a sneaky sizzle with Sauza tequila, agave nectar, jalapeño salsa and lime juice, and the new signature Double Barrel Margarita, made with Black Barrel Hornitos Sauza. Mi Cocina also debuted a seasonal margarita for summer: the tequila-based Milagro Sangria. “It’s served in custom glassware featuring some of our beautiful commissioned artwork by Mexican artist, Luis Sottil, and can be ordered by the glass or in a carafe to share,” Posoz says. Patio season is upon us, so raise a toast with a classic or a new favorite. When you’re in Mi Cocina’s margarita kingdom, you know each one will be reliably good.
Torchy’s Tacos
2175 E. Southlake Blvd. TASTIEST TACOS The humble taco: It’s a Mexican-food mainstay. Only the tacos at Torchy’s Tacos aren’t humble at all; they’re “damn good,” as the restaurant boldly touts in its stores and on its website. Our readers agree, with more than 30 percent proclaiming that Torchy’s does tacos best. Anamia’s TexMex and Mi Dia From Scratch came in second and third place, respectively. The Austin-based taco shop began in 2006 as a trailer attached to a Vespa scooter. Founder Michael Rypka felt the area was lacking some great street food, so he put his executive-chef skills to work, turning out tacos so good he grew his fan base from one neighborhood to the entire nation. Torchy’s now operates more than 30 stores, serving up Mexican-street-food-style tacos in crazy-good varieties. Torchy’s famously funky menu features tacos such as the Trailer Park, a flour tortilla bulging with fried chicken, green chiles, pico de gallo, lettuce and cheese, all topped off with a zingy poblano sauce. Make it “trashy” by holding the lettuce and adding queso. Speaking of queso, the restaurant’s green chile queso is topped off with guacamole, queso fresco and cilantro. A drizzle of Diablo hot sauce makes this dip sing. For those who like to mix it up with their tacos, Torchy’s also offers a rotating monthly special known as the Taco of the Month. Sometimes it’s new and different; sometimes it’s an old favorite. And, because Torchy’s has a philanthropic side, it donates five percent of the monthly taco’s sales to community causes. To us, it makes the tacos taste that much better.

Mi Dia From Scratch
1295 S. Main St., Grapevine BEST VARIETY BEST ATMOSPHERE Whether you’re contemplating the Queso Fundido or the Quesadillas Tex-Mex to start with, Mi Dia From Scratch is all about choice. More than a quarter of readers (27 percent) ranked the Grapevine hot spot as having the best menu variety, followed by Anamia’s Tex-Mex and Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant. Our readers know a good thing when they see it; this upscale cantina is also Zagat-rated as one of Dallas’ Best Mexican Restaurants and also one of Dallas’ Best Outdoor Mexican Spots. It’s not a wonder why. The food is as creative and authentic as it is good. “Our menu is aimed at showcasing the evolution of Mexican cuisine through its many historical influences,” says Gabriel DeLeon, chef and managing partner, “while incorporating the flavors of New Mexico in a way that has not been successful in this market before.” DeLeon takes the “From Scratch” part of the name seriously. Almost everything is made in-house. The menu mixes Mexican dishes like Relleno Al Carbon and Pollo Agave with modern Santa Fe and Tex-Mex flavors such as New Mexican Guiso and Chimichangas. But of all the wide-ranging options, DeLeon says the Sea Bass Tacos are the most popular. Tender fish is grilled over pecan wood, tucked in a house-made flour tortilla, and topped with pickled cabbage, micro cilantro and a kicky chipotle remoulade sauce. When you need something to wash it all down, Mi Dia’s expertly crafted margaritas are not to be missed. Each one is made with hand-squeezed juices and 100-percent agave tequilas picked from the restaurant’s awe-inspiring tequila tower. Regulars particularly love Hell Freezes Over, a mouthwatering combination of freshly muddled cucumber, basil and lime topped off with New Mexico green hatchinfused Herradura silver tequila. DeLeon jokes, “Mambo who?” It’s not just a massive menu that sets Mi Dia From Scratch apart; it’s also a beautiful environment. Nearly half (42 percent) of Southlake Style readers say the restaurant has the best atmosphere, followed by Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant and Mi Cocina. This isn’t a place to hunch over a bowl of tortilla chips unnoticed; this is a see-and-be-seen restaurant with an ambience that’s just as enticing as the menu. Whether you shimmy into a comfortable upholstered booth inside or opt for a spot on the patio (which is equipped with an outdoor bar and fire pit), you won’t be disappointed. Mi Dia From Scratch has it all: fire, water, music, and, of course, fantastic Mexican cuisine. 2980 E. Southlake Blvd. BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT OVERALL BEST GUACAMOLE With so many excellent choices in the area, we wondered who would stand out as the best Mexican restaurant overall. The top tamale? Anamia’s Tex-Mex with nearly a quarter of the vote. Chuy’s and Mi Dia From Scratch came in second and third place, respectively, as the local favorites. Community members adore Anamia’s, and the restaurant adores them right back. “I love seeing my guests enjoy their time with us, and seeing them leave happy and satisfied,” says Owner Jay Ortiz. “It’s what makes me go to work every day.” Serving guests with the highest quality food and the best possible experience has been a passion for Ortiz since he opened the first Anamia’s with his wife, Anna, in Coppell in 1994. What started as a small, hole-in-the-wall restaurant in a nearby town has expanded into a flourishing business with four locations around the Metroplex and more than 250 employees (many who have been around since the original opening). “Anamia’s is not a chain or franchise,” Ortiz says. “We are family owned and operated, and we believe in treating guests like family.” This family focus is even reflected in the menu—many items, like Jerry’s Chicken or the Gabriella plate, are named after family members, employees and longtime friends of the restaurant. Dishes range from Tex-Mex classics such as enchiladas and tacos to specialty surprises like Fajitas Picante, a sizzling plate of chicken or beef fajitas topped with crispy, fried onion strips, rice and guac. As for the environment, Anamia’s is warm and inviting, from the friendly service to the restaurant décor. “We bring a comfortable but family-friendly vibe with the help of our designer and long-time friend, Andra at Keaton Designs,” says Oritz. So will there be additional locations popping up in North Texas? You can bet your brisket tacos. “We’ve had wonderful success and growth,” says Ortiz. “We will be expanding, but first we are recognizing our infrastructure so that our growth will go smoothly.” More locations just means more opportunities to enjoy the restaurant’s show-stopping guacamole. Nearly 40 percent of Southlake Style readers proclaimed Anamia’s has the area’s best guac, followed by Mi Dia From Scratch and Mi Chula’s. The guacamole is so outstanding that it’s nearly impossible to avoid devouring it along with an entire basket of tortilla chips. The beloved dip (which is also pictured on Anamia’s gift cards) is a hand-mashed fiesta of large Haas avocados, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and the restaurant’s secret mix of spices. (When you have guac this good, you have to keep certain things under wraps.) It’s made tableside in a molcajete bowl, the traditional Mexican version of a mortar and pestle. “It’s about the show and it being prepared to [the guests’] order: mild, medium or spicy,” says Ortiz. “Our guests love that.” Guests love the guac and a lot more at Anamia’s. Now that it’s declared as the best Mexican restaurant in our part of town, be prepared to wait for a table. Better go early—we sure are.

Executive Chef Chris Elsaesser worked in restaurants since he was 15 but it wasn’t until he was in his 20s that his love of cooking came. On his own in Austin without a lot of money, he prepared his meals at home while watching PBS cooking shows. Now he draws inspiration from satisfied customers. Elsaesser says the menu at Copeland’s is influenced by popularity, portion sizes and dietary concerns. Patrons’ favorite menu item is the Shrimp and Crab Cake Alfredo. But for those seeking a lighter version of the dish, the restaurant recently added a Crab Cake and Zucchini Pasta to the menu with julienne zucchini and poached shrimp in a light stock. The restaurant also offers a very elaborate breakfast buffet and Sunday Brunch where Elsaesser gets to “push the envelope” in regards to quality and creativity of food.

The Terrifying Reality of Identity Theft
P
icture this scenario. You receive a phone call from a number you don’t recognize. The caller is sent to voicemail, and upon playback, you hear a friendly yet unsettling voice inquiring if you’ve opened a credit card account at their department store recently. Only problem is … you haven’t.
Southlake Police Chief James Brandon says Southlake’s identity theft problem isn’t necessarily a unique one, as it’s striking victims across the country. “Identity theft cases are on the rise nationwide, and have become one of the most common ways that someone is victimized,” Chief Brandon explains. “If one looks at the trend on a regional, state or national level, the numbers are increasing year to year.” Southlake Mayor Laura Hill agrees. “Identity theft has unfortunately become the new normal,” she says. “It is frightening to think how many people I know that have either been affected personally or have a friend who has been affected.” According to Southlake Police records, 184 identity theft cases were reported in the city in 2015, and 37 reported just in the first two months of 2016. But what constitutes an identity theft case? And could you be considered a victim? “Identity theft is generally understood to fall within the Texas penal code section 32.51 Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information,” Chief Brandon says. “This means that it is illegal to possess or use someone else’s information to obtain credit, goods or services.” Still many get identity theft confused with credit card abuse, which, while a serious crime, is not nearly as difficult to recover from. “I think it’s safe to say anyone who has ever had a credit card probably had an unauthorized charge on his or her account,” Jessica says. “However, with credit card fraud, it’s a simple process to get rid of unwanted charges. You call the credit card company and cancel the card. They send you a new one. With identity theft, the process is not that simple. Unless you have a company like ID Watchdog or LifeLock that will do the legwork for you, it’s a tedious process.” And it all starts with one unfortunate phone call. So, what should you do first if you receive a message that your identity has been stolen? Where do you turn?
Could someone be trying to steal your identity? More than one in four people have experienced identity theft, according to MSI International. It’s a crime that cost Americans $16 billion in 2014, according to a study by Javelin Strategy and Research. If you’re like local identity theft victim, Jessica*, or most people for that matter, you’ll probably chalk this up as a scam, or at least a clever way to get you to sign up for a credit card once you return the call. Unfortunately, this time the phone rang again. On the line was Jessica’s bank, now asking if she had opened not one, but five additional credit cards with various merchants recently. “I was furious,” Jessica recalls. “In less than 24 hours, the fraudster(s) had opened or attempted to open 18 different accounts and charged more than $10,000 using my identity. Some were done online, some in the stores and some charged to my existing store accounts.” A CRIME THAT HITS TOO CLOSE TO HOME Frightening scene, but this couldn’t happen to you, right? Consider this: Between 2014 and 2015, identity theft rose by 47 percent nationally, and Texas rose from tenth place to eighth place on the Federal Trade Commission’s list of states with the highest per-capita identity theft complaints. Bringing it even more local, Southlake ranks 28th place in Credit Donkey’s Safest Cities in Texas 2016 study, compared to our neighbor Colleyville’s first-place standing. What’s more, the crime has no age biases. People young and old are impacted by identity theft.

BE VIGILANT AND SMART “If one believes they have become a victim of identity theft, the first step is to notify your local police department to file a report,” Chief Brandon says. “Most credit agencies and creditors will not accept a victim’s claim without an official police report.” When Jessica discovered she had been victimized, she and her husband jumped to their phones to take action. “I called the credit bureaus, he called the banks and credit card companies, the police, the IRS … anyone else we could think to notify,” she recalls. “I was

desperate for information and the ‘off’ switch. In hindsight, I would have frozen my credit with all three credit bureaus rather than just issue a fraud alert.” Based on her experience, Jessica recommends everyone take a few precautionary steps to help protect themselves from identity theft, though she knows no one will ever be completely safe. Here’s her advice: 1) SHRED YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. 2) ONLY MAIL YOUR OUTGOING MAIL AT THE USPS OFFICE, OR HAND DELIVER IT TO THE MAIL CARRIER. 3) ENABLE TWO-STEP ONLINE VERIFICATION FOR ALL YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS AND BANK/ FINANCIAL

More than 30 percent of identity theft victims are scammed by family and close friends. Identity theft has been the No. 1 consumer complaint for 15 consecutive years. Though all highly suggested, Jessica notes the credit report to be the most important of all. “Do it today, and make sure it matches what you should have on there,” she urges. “Are there any inquiries from companies that you did not authorize? Are there any discrepancies? If yes, take care of those immediately.” Chief Brandon echoes Jessica’s recommendation to shred all personal information. “In the past few years, there have been several large-scale data breaches including Target and the federal government,” he says. “Though a consumer can’t prevent a company’s data breach, things like retrieving mail promptly and putting out trash just before pickup can help. Shredding documents that contain personal information is also a great way to prevent a criminal from acquiring the needed information for an identity theft.” Take advantage of neighborhood or community trash collection events, such as Southlake’s annual Crud Cruiser, to clean house while staying safe— with all documents shredded before removal. “The bad guys always seem to be one step ahead of us,” Mayor Hill says. “Protecting yourself is a never-ending task, and that doesn’t even begin to deal with companies, the government and doctors that have your personal information that can be compromised.

“When you have computers searching for access, there is no selectivity,” Mayor Hill adds. “Hackers don’t care where you live.” With data breaches and online hacking becoming an easy way for criminals to hide behind a screen, the only choice people have to protect themselves is absolute diligence. In addition to the suggestions listed above, the National Consumers League advises updating browsers, anti-virus and operating system software regularly, securing your home wireless router and network, taking caution when opening links or attachments in emails, staying aware of which companies store your personal data, filing your taxes early, and again, reviewing your credit reports frequently. If all this seems a little overwhelming, identity theft protection companies are available to help keep watch over your assets, so you’re not in this alone. “After years of thinking that I should sign up for some kind of identity theft protection, a recent case in Southlake motivated me to finally do it,” Mayor Hill says. Chief Brandon says that while some may be wary of paying a resource to assist with protecting your identity, the pros may outweigh the cons. “Critics of companies such as LifeLock are quick to point out that a vigilant person can do many of the same things that the company does. One can examine their free credit report to ensure that no credit has been obtained that isn’t legitimate. Reality is, most of us are not that vigilant, and there may be some benefit from utilizing these companies,” he says. Even if you don’t invest in services, the company’s blog, LifeLockUnlocked.com, is a goldmine of useful information. “Spend the money to make sure your computer, iPad and cell phone are safe,” Mayor Hill advises. “Hire experts if you aren’t sure. You have to assume the worst will happen; that it will happen to you.” Can you really put a price on peace of mind? Many, including Jessica, would likely say no. She’s still working to put the pieces of her stolen life back together, and it seems everyone knows another victim doing just the same.

Motherhood & Cupcakes here’s a new cupcake shop in town:
Gigi’s Cupcakes. But there’s more than flour and frosting behind this Park Village bakery; there’s Gigi Butler, its faith-filled, go-getter founder who’s also a single mom. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship? Butler’s got it in the bag—or rather, the cupcake box. Gigi’s Cupcakes has grown from one shop in Nashville, Tennessee, to more than 100 franchise locations sprinkled throughout 23 states. There’s an international store in South Korea and there are also plans to grow the business to 250 locations in the next five years. “Becoming a successful entrepreneur requires persistence,” says Butler. “Not only in your passion for your product or service, but also in following your dream.” Country Songs, Cleaning … and Cupcakes
Since childhood, Butler had dreams of becoming a countrymusic star. She sang in bars all over California and then moved to Nashville, hoping to be discovered. To make ends meet, Butler also started her own cleaning business, Gigi’s Cleaning Company. She cleaned homes, offices and construction sites while singing on the side. When her music career didn’t take off as she had hoped, Butler turned to baking. She grew up in a family of bakers and had a knack around the kitchen. So she thought, “Why not start a bakery?” Butler opened the first Gigi’s Cupcakes in 2008 with only $33 to her name. She prayed customers would come. They did … and they loved the cupcakes. In 2013, her gross revenue was reported at $43 million. So how did Butler create a booming business while raising her daughter, Kendel, as a single parent? Hard work and a whole lot of prayer. “I lean on my faith at all times,” Butler says. “I ask God for the guidance to help me lead this company and my family in the right direction.” Butler remembers the moment she knew she had something special with her blossoming bakery. Interestingly, it was her first customer complaint. A woman had traveled over an hour for a Scarlett’s Red Velvet cupcake and was furious when she learned the flavor wasn’t on the menu that day. “She was so upset we didn’t have it and informed me she’d driven specifically to my bakery for that one cupcake,” says Butler. “Someone was emotional about a cupcake flavor I had created. At that moment, I knew I had created a product that people were passionate about and really wanted to buy.” A Taste of the Brand
While Butler knew she hit a sweet spot with cupcakes, she also knew the value of diversifying the menu to differentiate her shop. Walk into Gigi’s Cupcakes and you’ll find a sugary smorgasbord of stuffed cookies, bread loaves, muffins, cakes, cheesecakes, pies and specialty coffee. The shop is also rolling out cake bites, quiche and ice cream in a few test markets. 58
As for the cupcakes, customers can choose from a mindboggling 300 rotating flavors, including gluten-free and sugar-free varieties. Each treat is topped off with Gigi’s signature swirl of sky-high icing. No matter what flavor or indulgence sweet seekers opt for, they’re in for something special. “We focus on creating a full sensory experience at Gigi’s Cupcakes, providing freshly baked items that are finished with an artist’s touch,” Butler says. “I want people to instantly recognize our box, like they do a Tiffany’s box, and get excited knowing there is an incredible dessert waiting inside.” Butler got a taste of her own company from a different perspective when she appeared on the hit CBS series Undercover Boss last year. On the show, Butler got in disguise and worked alongside her employees as a cupcake decorator, baker, cake manager and customer service rep. At the end of each episode, the CEO or “Undercover Boss,” offers financial gifts to selected employees as a token of appreciation. Butler helped one employee launch a charity and provided funds to help another employee start a family. Giving back is important to Butler—and it’s something she hopes to impart to five-year-old Kendel. “I want to leave a legacy of love for my daughter,” she says. “I want her to know there is strength and a sense of community when you give back to people.” Ingredients for Life
Butler also wants Kendel to know the value of hard work. When times got tough, Butler persevered, changing course from singing and housecleaning to baking and entrepreneurship. She admits there are challenges when simultaneously running a business and raising a child, but these can be overcome. “[As] a single mother, balancing work and life is a constant struggle. It’s something that every working mom or dad struggles with,” Butler says. “I always read my Bible and exercise regularly to keep myself sane.” She has also accepted that she can’t (and shouldn’t) try to do it all. “For a long time, I thought I could be involved in every aspect of the business, have a social life, and care for my daughter,” admits Butler. “By hiring others to help me manage and grow the Gigi’s Cupcakes brand, I’ve learned to trust in others’ expertise and experience.” With talented professionals helping her run the business, Butler has more time with Kendel. They’re often whipping up cupcakes and other homemade treats in their kitchen in the Nashville area. In fact, that’s probably what they’ll be doing for Mother’s Day this month. Butler says she plans to attend church and cook, bake, and host friends and family. For Butler, the best moments are those shared with her daughter. “I enjoy creating sweet memories with her,” she says. “Every day has its challenges, but the relationship I have with my daughter is worth more than I could ever achieve in my professional life. urrounded by a lush garden in downtown Arlington, set on the property of a charming bed and breakfast, is restaurant506. You wouldn’t even know it’s there … unless you’d heard about its many accolades. The elegant eatery nestled inside The Sanford House has a perfect five-star rating on OpenTable.com, won Open Table’s Diner’s Choice 2016 award, and has also landed on the website’s national list of best brunches. If you’re looking to treat Mom to a special Mother’s Day or you just want to enjoy a great meal in a serene setting, this place comes highly recommended. Though the inn is worth checking out for a staycation, you don’t need to be a guest there to dine at restaurant506. It’s open to the public Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, or you can make reservations for Saturday or Sunday brunch, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every weekend. For Mother’s Day, the restaurant is
rolling out a special prix fixe brunch menu. All you need to do is make a reservation— and maybe get some flowers. Classified as “inspired American cuisine,” the dishes at restaurant506 are just that—inspired. Executive Chef John Klein has cooked in places such as Boston, Chicago and Florida, and he incorporates those experiences into the food at restaurant506. “These places each have a way of expressing their vibrant cultures through food,” he says. “Drawing on my experiences allows me to think outside the box to create our own unique style.” The menu is creative, if not indulgent. The award-winning brunch, which is admirably not a buffet, features fare such as Peaches & Cream French Toast and Sage Asiago Crusted Trout. Whether you’re into sweet or savory, there’s something to satisfy your appetite. And because brunching means sipping on a

chilled beverage, restaurant506 offers a refreshing variety, including four different kinds of mimosas. Dinner is also a delightful experience. The meal begins with an “Amuse Bouche,” which means “amusement for the mouth.” It’s a succulent taste designed to whet the appetite before the main course. There are as many appetizers as there are entrées on the menu, so if you typically don’t order a starter, you might want to look over the offerings—particularly the Pecan Crusted Crab Cakes. These happen to be Chef Klein’s specialty and have become a staple at restaurant506. “I have always been inspired by seafood and fresh herbs, and my Maryland-style crab cakes are the perfect combination,” he says. “This dish also draws from my experience in Texas as I have added pecans into the breading.” Dinner options such as the Espresso Dusted Duck Breast and Herb Crumbed Rack of Lamb aren’t just deliciously tempting, they’re also artfully plated. The food here is designed to be appealing to the eye and the taste buds. Just consider the Chocolate Deconstruction, a $9 marvel of a dessert. A hollow orb of chocolate is filled with ice cream and fresh berries. Then, at your table, a server pours pipinghot caramel over the top, melting everything together into a plate of sweet deliciousness. When you declare a favorite on the menu, it’ll stick around—for a while, at least. The menu changes in the spring and again in the fall to incorporate the freshest foods while also highlighting the themes of the season. Right now, kale is the ingredient du jour. “This superfood is something that has caught the public’s attention lately,” says Chef Klein, “and I’m excited to present kale in my own way.” Spring is a lovely time to dine al fresco, or you can enjoy your meal in the lavishly appointed dining room. When you’re done, take a stroll beneath a canopy of trees in the courtyard. It’s an ideal spot for snapping a quick family photo (which is all Mom probably wants, anyway). And if you’re there in the evening, the garden sparkles with twinkling lights. Should you want to weave some educational tidbits into your experience, restaurant506 offers special dinners and events. It will host a Whiskey Pairing Dinner later this month, and in the summer, it will roll out an instructional wine series. Called the 506 Wine School, participants learn about and taste at least six different wines while enjoying some light bites. We admit we don’t often look to Arlington for fine dining, but we’re glad we discovered restaurant506. It’s a quiet retreat with an abundance of culinary and visual delights. May 16 • 65

Pizza Party Taverna Rossa is a music-fueled celebration of craft pies and pints. Gourmet pizza. Craft beer. Live music. That’s Taverna Rossa Craft Pizza & Beer in a nutshell. The Tex-Italian watering hole new to Park Village brings plenty of hometown flavors and handmade deliciousness to Southlake. The menu is built on a foundation of stone-fired, thin-crust pizzas, but there are plenty of other worthy options such as salads, small plates, sandwiches and pastas. And you can bet these items are hand-crafted, hand-torn, local, seasonal—you know, all those culinary terms that are having a moment right now. Case in point: the Smokey Pie. It’s made with sweet Texas barbecue sauce, local smoked brisket, local bacon and house-blended cheese. Or consider the Killer TX Sausage Queso. Ladled into a cup or bowl, this spicy dip is made with ingredients such as local Texas sausage and house-pickled jalapeño. Notice a common theme here? The food is appealing for a reason: It’s authentically Texan.

Taverna Rossa isn’t just spinning pies and serving dishes with a Texas twist; it provides the whole package of great food and drinks in a fun atmosphere. It’s open for brunch, lunch and dinner, and offers a few different happy hours. Stop by Friday and Saturday starting at 9 p.m. for its Late Night “Hoppy” Hour (we see what they did there), and enjoy live music from local bands. Genres range from rock and country to grassroots-style music. Now about those drinks. The restaurant offers a dizzying array of beer, wine and cocktails. There are two dozen craft brews on tap plus a sizeable selection of bottles and cans. The beer may get all the buzz, but don’t pass up Taverna Rossa’s hand-crafted cocktails. The Rossa Mule is a refreshing concoction of fruit-infused bourbon, ginger beer and fresh lime. And the Lemon Basil Crush, made with infused Deep Eddy vodka, muddled basil, yellow chartreuse and grapefruit, is basically summertime in a glass. While it’s certainly a lively scene with beer, booze and bands, Taverna Rossa is also a hot spot for brunch. They don’t call it “Sunday Funday” for nothing. Every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, brunchers can enjoy sweet and savory 13-inch breakfast pies. Mama’s French Toast Pie is luscious sustenance topped with fresh berries, goat cheese, local honey, almonds and cinnamon. There are also a handful of what the restaurant calls “Hangover Specials,” which include menu items like biscuits and gravy and street tacos. Bottom line: If you love pizza and ice-cold beer, give Taverna Rossa a shot. It promises it’s here “to take this tried-and-true pair to the next level.” We think it’s hitting the mark—and doing a whole lot more.

In the South, you spell love p-i-e. At least that’s the sentiment of Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. “When you share pie, you share love,” according to founders Scott and Meredith Layton. The nostalgic Southern dessert shop that has become a mainstay in Knoxville, Tennessee, has brought its handmade, award-winning pies to Colleyville, and we couldn’t be more excited to taste every last one. All the recipes were handed down from the grandmothers of the founders, so you know these pies are the real deal—from the buttery crust to the perfectly sweet filling. The confections at Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop are almost too pretty to eat. Six classic pies such as Coconut Cream and Granny’s Apple Pie are handmade daily in two sizes: four-inch mini pies and nine-inch pies to share. There are also seasonal pies such as the Summer Peach Pie and Edisto Key Lime Pie, which is named after the founders’ favorite beach in South Carolina. And of course, there’s a Buttermilk Pie at Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. The signature dessert is smooth and sweet—a hybrid of a classic Southern chess pie and a custard. “This flavor is great for people who prefer something without chocolate,” according to the shop. But if you happen to love chocolate, the Chocolate Meringue Pie won’t disappoint. The filling is slow-cooked on the stovetop and stirred until it reaches the perfect consistency. The result is a velvety pie bursting with rich chocolate flavor. Lightly toasted Italian meringue is the finishing touch. While every pie is magnificent, Nanny’s Pecan Pie rose to the top as one of the South’s Best Pecan Pies, as declared by Taste of the South magazine. The famed pie starts with a buttery shortbread crust, which is then filled with crunchy pecans and topped with a decadent pecan filling. Then in the oven it goes until it’s firm but still moist and chewy. We can only imagine the aromas that must constantly waft out of the bakery. The shop also whips up something called a Cloud 9, which is just what it sounds like: bliss in a cup. A mini pie is delicately mixed with a giant scoop of ice cream, resulting in a swirl of crust, sweet fillings and ice cream in each bite. It’s like à la mode, only better. Thumbprint Cookies are yet another sweet indulgence at Buttermilk Sky. These cheerful confections have different icing colors and flavors to coincide with the season. However you like your pie, one thing is for sure: You’ll want to get a slice at Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. If pie is love, we’re downright smitten.

A Festival of Fun Grapevine Main Street Fest is the perfect family outing.

istoric Downtown Grapevine. It’s that time of year again. Grapevine’s 32nd Annual Main Street Fest is back with more food, wine, beer, live music, rides and a whole lot of family fun. It’s the perfect event for all ages, so round up your crew and enjoy the sights, sounds, and of course, the food. There are plenty of mouthwatering options on the docket, from turkey legs, pizza, corn dogs and funnel cakes to in-house menu options at any of the festival restaurants located within Historic Downtown Grapevine. When it comes to fun and games, one of the most popular attractions is the Carnival and Midway, where you can try your luck at all kinds of activities and even get a view from above while riding the Ferris wheel. The KidsZone is where kids can enjoy the LEGOLAND® Discovery Center’s Junior Builder Competition, a petting zoo, interactive games and more. You will see them work their way through their different personalities and viewpoints, a rivalry over the same love interest and Elphaba wishing her appearance didn’t make her a social outcast. This free, all-day event features a film symposium, children’s feature film, main feature film and a Texas short film exhibition. Food trucks will be onsite to fuel your appetite, and for adults in need of an adult beverage, take part in a vodka tasting provided by Zodiac Vodka. COTTONWOOD ART FESTIVAL MAY 7-8 Richardson. For all you art lovers and collectors out there, the City of Richardson’s Cottonwood Art Festival is right up your alley. This two-day event, held in Cottonwood Park, brings together art, music, food and family fun. Come out to enjoy a little shopping, interact with artists in person, and then relax in the courtyard with a bite to eat and listen to some live music. Flutter freely among the butterflies at the Greater Plano Kiwanis Club’s 15th Annual Butterfly Festival inside the Grand Court. Enjoy a staff-guided tour in the onsite butterfly house, learn about the anatomy of the butterfly, feed a butterfly and even get the chance to see a butterfly hatch from the chrysalis. If you want a glimpse into the world of education, just ask Betty McIlvain, Ed.D. She was on the frontlines for more than 40 years, most recently as principal of Walnut Grove Elementary School (WGES). As the Dragons gear up for summer break, we invited Dr. McIlvain, who retired last semester, to reflect on her career and her time in Carroll ISD. Q: How has education evolved over the decades?
Q: What did you enjoy most about the Dragon community?
A: Changes in education over the last 40 years have proven excitingly revolutionary. Many learning opportunities are available online for teachers and learners. Parents can help their children access these opportunities at home as never before.
A: Carroll ISD is a resilient place. We capture the tasks that are difficult, but not impossible. One example of our supportive community is the school safety provision for School Resource Officers.
Q: How have students evolved?
Q: You’re half a year into your retirement. What’s this new phase in life like?
A: Students now have opportunities to become more resilient and reflective learners. They can interactively engage in meaningful academic and personal growth. Q: From your perspective, what makes Carroll ISD different from others? A: Carroll ISD is distinctive in the systemic approach taken to capturing excellence in achievement. The ownership for this approach starts with our amazing students, but extends to teachers and administrators, and is supported community-wide at unprecedented levels. Q: What was one of your proudest moments as a Dragon? A: My “Dragon pride” moments include celebrating the enrichment of learning achievement levels at Durham Elementary and Walnut Grove Elementary School, and the pervasive TEAMWORK WORKS philosophy uniquely tied to those moments. Q: What advice would you give educators? A: Be like a duck. Stay calm and unruffled on the surface, but paddle with every bit of energy you have underneath.

A: The retirement phase of living is very much a transition to more flexible frameworks of thinking and subsequent forms of opportunity. It’s joyous, but challenges you to be highly creative. Fortunately, creativity is on my side. In addition to my philanthropy involvements, I also teach higher education classes at a private university. One of my enduring professional roles has been as a teacher/mentor to aspiring school administrators. Q: What do you miss most now that you’re retired? A: I’ll always relish the close interaction with colleagues, students and parents with whom I’ve worked. I cherish the fine-tuned problem solving associated with providing optimum opportunities for our students. Q: What did your time within Carroll ISD mean to you personally?
