Dig In Dig in: Two words that just sound better during the holidays. It means you’re probably about to enjoy an elaborate feast of turkey (it’s the centerpiece dish for 89 percent of you) and, if you’re like my family, about a dozen other dishes. But between getting the kids situated, the piling high of plates and trying not to get cranberry sauce on the new tablecloth, the grand regale usually gets cold. At least, that’s how Thanksgiving often goes for me. Still, I’m thankful. And I’m not talking about a fleeting moment after the first bite of buttery mashed potatoes or when somebody else offers to clean the kitchen. Feeling thankful is a mindset. There are plenty of reasons to give thanks and we list a few of them in this month’s installment of 10 Things on page 72. What makes you grateful to reside in Southlake? Add to our list using #10Things. The neighbors we spotlight in “No Place Like Home” on page 30 can certainly chime in—these Carroll grads still live in the Southlake area. They’ve taken different career paths, but these former Dragons share a common thread: Home is here. Southlake has changed over the years, (“We’re pretty far removed from the Dairy Queen days,” says Matt Woolsey, one of the alums we interviewed), but it’s the best place in the world to those who live here. “Southlake is still a great place to live and raise a family,” says Dragon alum Erin Avery. When it comes to serving up a taste of home, nobody does it quite like Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. We sat down with Kimberly Murray from the Colleyville location (the only one in Texas) to talk about the pies that are worth saving room for this holiday season. From nostalgic classics to luscious seasonal offerings, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop offers plenty of pies you’ll want gracing your holiday table. Turn to page 84 for our Q&A. The Road (More) Traveled Sometimes everything just falls into place in the world of singer-songwriters, and in the case of Sting, that’s exactly what happened. His first rock/pop album in more than a decade, “57th & 9th” came about impulsively, according to the Grammy, Oscar and Emmy Award-winning artist. Taking its title from the Manhattan street corner Sting crossed each day as he walked to the studios where the recording was made, the album features tracks that take listeners all over the place within Sting’s myriad of styles—from the anthemic “50,000” to the raucous, guitar-driven first single “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You.”

The Many Layers of Lauren Among the collection of personal essays that comprise Lauren Graham’s new book, “Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between),” are chapters about her role as Lorelai Gilmore the first time around and what it was like reprising that role nine years later. DRAGON RUNNERS SURGED AHEAD AT INAUGURAL CARROLL DRAGON XC CLASSIC The Southlake Carroll Cross Country teams hosted the inaugural Carroll Dragon XC Classic last month amidst fall-like temperatures and a muddy course. The Lady Dragons dominated, taking first place for both Varsity and JV. Nine Dragon runners finished as National Elites. “Our Cross Country teams put together strong performances, and we are excited for the post season. It’s time to step up and start running fast,” said head coach Justin Leonard. The Varsity girls were led by senior Gillian Mortimer, who took fourth place with a time of 18:14. The Varsity boys came in third place and were led by senior Nicolas Fernandes in 10th place with a time of 16:17.
SAVE THE DATE FOR INAUGURAL ELVES ON THE RUN 5K, FUN RUN The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division is kicking off the first-ever Elves on the Run 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, December 3 at Oak Grove Park in Grapevine. This family-friendly event is in the heart of Grapevine—the Christmas Capitol of Texas! The event kicks off with a Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. followed by a chip-timed 5K at 9 a.m. with awards for men and women in all age categories. LIGHT UP YOUR NIGHT AT THE 34TH ANNUAL XTO ENERGY PARADE OF LIGHTS Set the holidays aglow in brilliant fashion at the 34th annual XTO Energy Parade of Lights in downtown Fort Worth. Join the crowd of spectators from across North Texas to view hundreds of illuminated floats and a half a million lights. The festive fun kicks off at 6 p.m. on November 20. The Parade of Lights has become one of Fort Worth’s most beloved traditions—and it’s also the largest illuminated holiday parade in Texas. In addition to the decorated floats, the parade will also display brilliant antique cars, lively marching bands, precision equestrian units, horsedrawn carriages, and groups of carolers celebrating “The Melodies of Christmas” on the 1.58-mile parade route. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be making an appearance on the specially designed, LED-lit, grand finale float. Fort Worth police officer Matt Pearce is serving as the 2016 Parade of Lights’ grand marshal. The event is free with reserved street seats available for $8.50 online. IN THE SPOTLIGHT community CEREBRUM’S GALA TO GIVE BACK RAISED FUNDS, AWARENESS FOR VETERANS Cerebrum Health Centers is making big strides for veterans. In September, the brain rehabilitation center hosted its inaugural Gala to Give Back benefitting veterans’ healthcare through National Foundation for Brain Health and Feherty’s Troops First Foundation. The gala raised $500,000 for the cause. Approximately 250 guests joined dozens of active and veteran military service members alongside Glenn Beck, Marcus Luttrell, Miles Austin, General Leroy Sisco for an evening of mixing, mingling and raising funds for veterans. The night’s activities included a photo booth raffle, big board and live auction, a helicopter arrival for the celebrity auctioneer, a video from former Governor Rick Perry in support of the cause, and incredible food from Vaquero Club including a seafood bar and live music from the Dan Quinn Band.
ROBERT BARNES SELECTED TO U.S. ARMY ALL-AMERICAN GAME Southlake Carroll defensive back Robert Barnes earned one of the most prestigious honors in program history: a U.S. Army All-American jersey. “It’s a huge opportunity,” Barnes said. “It’s a dream come true. As a high school football player, you dream and look forward to being a part of something like this. I’m blessed to be a part of it.” The 17th annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl returns to San Antonio on January 7 at the Alamodome. It will be broadcast nationally on NBC. “We are very proud of Robert and his family,” said head coach Hal Wasson. “It signifies that he is an elite athlete. We are also very flattered for this program. We are proud of all of our players. Robert knows it’s a tribute to his teammates and the program.”

EIS students packed into the gymnasium to hear Brown’s motivating message of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. “You can think about being great, but you have to work,” said Brown during the pep rally. “How can you push yourself to be the best you can be academically?” Brown donated autographed footballs for the campaign, which aims to raise more than $40,000 to support teacher and campus needs through an online auction offering one-of-a-kind student experiences and teacher wish-list items. FORMER NFL PLAYER TIM GREEN TALKED EDUCATION, BOOKS WITH DRAGONS Tim Green, former NFL player and best-selling author, visited Dragon Country last month to speak to students at Dawson and Eubanks about the power of education and reading. Green was an award-winning NFL defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons for eight years. While he played in the NFL, he also studied law and launched a writing career. After writing more than a dozen books for adults, Tim began a series of best-selling novels for children. The books are set in the world of sports and are based on Tim’s experiences as an athlete and a coach. It all comes back to a good education, he told students. “I love what education has done for me,” Green said. “Education is freedom, power, opportunity and choices.”

SPIN! PIZZA CELEBRATED ONE YEAR IN DFW Last month, SPIN! Pizza commemorated a year in the Metroplex with a “One Year Here” anniversary celebration, offering its popular Mini Mia at a discounted rate. “We love that the Dallas-Fort Worth area shares our penchant for great food and fun,” said founder Gail Lozoff. Noted as a restaurant to watch by the industry, as well as a place that has developed a cult-like following among diners, SPIN! was named one of the nation’s “Top 25 Fastest Growing Casuals” by Restaurant Business magazine. hether you’re hosting a family feast with all the fixings or a festive holiday dinner with friends and neighbors, wine completes the meal, enhancing the palate and dispersing aromas. Although the wine-isintimidating stereotype disappeared for most of us years ago, it’s natural to wonder what to serve during the holidays. Does a cabernet pair perfectly with your holiday menu or is a pinot grigio better-suited for your feast? The foods are so varied; it’s often difficult to pinpoint a wine that’s just right. Today’s spread can include any combination of fowl, pork, beef and seafood, as well as vegetarian dishes. And then there are the family favorites. No other time of year is so richly steeped in food traditions. Aunt Jenny loves bacon-wrapped scallop appetizers. Grandpa Bill has to have his braised red cabbage with apples. And everyone can’t get enough creamy potato gratin and green bean casserole.

Venture Away from the Expected Pairings With such an eclectic bounty on the table, wouldn’t it be fun to try something different than the traditional food and wine pairings—pinot noir with turkey, syrah with ham and cabernet sauvignon with beef? Keith Janosik, Central Market’s business development manager of beer and wine, suggests serving wines with lower tannins, such as a red zinfandel blend. (Simply put, tannins are compounds that create a dry feeling in your mouth.) Wines with soft tannins help balance meat, such as turkey, which can be on the dry side. The Prisoner, a unique Napa Valley red blend, is one of these wines. With aromas of Bing cherry, espresso and roasted fig, and flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and wild berry, The Prisoner lingers for a smooth and luscious finish. If you happen to have one or two wine connoisseurs on your guest list, Wine Spectator gives The Prisoner 2014 91 points on its 100-point scale, rating it an outstanding wine of superior character and style.

Rosé is another great option. “It’s time to think differently about rosé. It can be dry or fruity, and the glowing pink color looks pretty on a holiday table,” says Janosik, who is also a Certified Specialist of Wine. Mimi en Provence Grand Reserve Rosé is light-bodied and dry, and you can’t beat the price at under $20 a bottle. La Galope Rosé tastes like “it’s full of sunshine” and has a balanced acidity. Fruity and complex, it goes well with appetizers. If you want to add another type of wine to the table, try Matteo Braidot Pinot Grigio from Italy. Slightly nutty, full-bodied and with hints of savory, it pairs well with every kind of food, especially poultry and fish. And, as another under-$20 bottle, it won’t break the bank. A Toast to Friends, Family, Good Food, Great Company Lifting your glass for a toast just isn’t the same without a glass of bubbly. If you usually serve a California sparkling wine or a French Champagne, try prosecco from Italy. Just like true Champagne only comes from the Champagne region of France, real prosecco comes from the Prosecco DOC in northeast Italy. Look for prosecco labeled DOC or DOCG. DOC is an Italian quality-assurance designation for wine and food. DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) means the wine producers followed the strictest regulations possible. DOCG is also tested by a committee that then guarantees the geographic authenticity of the wine and its quality. If only an American sparkler will do and you’re serving appetizers such as oysters, sushi or salty

chips, Whole Foods’ wine experts suggest Gruet Sauvage Blanc de Blanc (under $20) for “incredibly elegant bubbles.” This bone-dry sparkling wine from New Mexico, made from 100 percent chardonnay grapes, has aromas of bright mineral and citrus notes that tickle the nose, followed by touches of green apple, lemon and grapefruit. End on a High Note As they say in show business, you want to leave them wanting more, and a fantastic dessert wine will create a lasting impression. Ports and sauternes are mainstays in this category, but since we’re tempting you to break away from the usual wine pairings, consider an ice wine. Ice wine is made in cold climates from grapes left to freeze on the

vines. When the grapes freeze, their natural sugars become concentrated, resulting in intensely sweet flavors. Germany is especially known for its highquality “eiswein.” Of course, for most of us, it’s not Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie. Recipes certainly vary, but pumpkin pie leans towards the savory side of desserts, which is the trick in terms of wine pairing. Wine Enthusiast magazine suggests medium to sweet rieslings (e.g. Jekel, Willamette Valley Vineyards) that bring a fitting crispness, and proclaims Inniskillin’s sparkling ice wine “as good a pairing as you can ask for.” Also, the chilled effervescence of a sparkling wine, such as Schramsberg’s Cremant and Domino de la Vega Cava, lifts the pie’s denseness and spice. Pecan pie leans toward the sweetest side of the pie spectrum. With the brown sugar and dark molasses texture and taste of pecan pie, a Portuguese fortified wine called Madeira provides a perfect foil. It’s a bit like port, but with a burnt character. For many, there’s no substitute for all things tried and true, and food and wine pairings are no exception. Whatever label you serve this holiday season, be sure to raise a glass to all you are thankful for.

very Dragon has a different journey after graduation. While Carroll grads could settle anywhere, sometimes their paths lead them right back to their hometown. We caught up with a few Dragon alumni who established careers and are raising families and building their lives right here in the Southlake area. They’re not in town just for the holidays; this is home. THE GOOD OL’ DAYS Matt Woolsey, general manager of Park Place Lexus Grapevine and Dragon class of 1992, recalls a time when life in Southlake moved at a slower pace.

bicycle up and down 1709 and go five minutes without seeing a car,” he says. “Our little town has grown u p a l o t . W e ’ r e p r e t t y f ar removed from the Dairy Queen days.” Some of Woolsey’s favorite memories as a Dragon include one-act plays and golf tournaments. But, when he thinks back to his high school days, what really stands out are the football games. Woolsey lived right across the street from the old Dragon Stadium and wouldn’t miss a game. “We’d get there early, reserve the front row and several rows up, and we’d get loud,” he says. There was even a Friday night when Woolsey’s dog Cujo (“Don’t let the name fool you,” he reassures) ran out onto the field and interrupted the game. “It was a funny moment,” Woolsey says, “but could you imagine that happening today?” Football games also bring back many happy memories for Mike Lafavers, owner of Feedstore BBQ and Dragon class of 1978. He fondly remembers the spirited competition, homecoming bonfires and victory parties—even if the Dragons didn’t win. To him and many others, being a Dragon is always something to celebrate. “It’s a lifestyle,” says Lafavers, who was voted his senior year as “Friendliest” and “Class Favorite.” “My class was so small, I probably only got five votes,” he says, “but that was enough to get a majority.” Darrell Brown, fire chief for the Grapevine Fire Department and Dragon class of 1983, also has happy memories of Dragon football. But he wasn’t in the stands on Friday night; he was on the field, playing football under legendary coach Bob Ledbetter. When the hot Texas sun blazed down on twoa-days in the summer, it didn’t bother Coach Ledbetter. “He wasn’t fazed by the heat,” recalls Brown, who credits his Dragon coaches and teachers for instilling a strong work ethic in students and athletes.

“They taught us that we were to take what we could from them and go make a difference for others,” Brown says. “[We learned] that our deeds, actions and successes are all about working together for the greater good of the team, community and family.” That sense of community is what Sean and Erin Avery, husband-and-wife owners of Zippy Shell and Dragon class of 1998, cherish the most from their days in Carroll—and it’s a big reason why they’re raising their two children in Southlake. “You’re part of a great program, from a great school from a great community,” says Sean. Home Sweet Home When Dragons leave the den after graduation, what makes them return to Southlake? For the Averys, moving home was both a business and a family decision. The couple met in eighth grade at Carroll Middle School and went on different paths after high school graduation—Sean to Texas A&M University to study engineering and Erin to Pennsylvania State University to study business. The two happened to reconnect on a business flight to London, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sean and Erin got married at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church and settled in Houston. But when baby made three, they decided to leave the city and plant roots in their hometown. “When we welcomed our first child, Caroline, we decided we wanted to raise her in Southlake, surrounded by friends and family,” Sean says. In October 2015, they moved back to Southlake and opened their business, Zippy Shell, a portable storage and moving company. And this October, their second daughter, Victoria, was born. With a growing family and a growing business, these former Dragons are just happy to be home.

“Southlake, over 20 years later, is still a great place to live and raise a family,” Erin says. “We’re Dragons at heart and we feel so fortunate to have benefitted from an amazing Carroll ISD education.” Passion for the City and Schools Woolsey of Park Place Lexus Grapevine was quick to leave Southlake after graduation—and also quick to return after college. Two days after he graduated from Carroll, Woolsey headed to the University of Texas at Austin to pursue his degree in business economics. As a college grad, he returned to Grapevine, where he worked for a small insurance company. However, his new job was short-lived; the company went out of business soon after Woolsey started. “I was six months out of college and needed to find a job,” says Woolsey. “I decided to sell cars at Park Place. Well, I didn’t find just a job; I found a career. I fell in love with this business and have been with Park Place ever since.” There’s no denying Woolsey’s community pride. He’s on the board of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, and last year he completed the chamber’s Leadership Class, which helped raise $20,000 for middle school band programs through the Band-Aide initiative. One of the fundraising events was held at Park Place Lexus Grapevine, with his son Austin performing in the band. “It was quite an honor seeing my son play in the jazz band at my place of business,” says Woolsey. He and his wife, Anne, have two sons in the district: Austin is a senior and president of Dragon Band, and Bennett is in eighth grade. Woolsey is grateful his children are Dragons just as he was. “The education in Carroll ISD truly is unparalleled,” he says. “#ExpectExcellence isn’t just a catchphrase; it’s a promise.”

A Neighboring Dragon In Southlake, green and white are practically the city’s official colors. But Brown, Grapevine’s fire chief, has learned to love the color red, too; all four of his daughters are Grapevine Mustangs, and his wife of 30 years, Lisa, is an educator in GrapevineColleyville ISD. “I’m still a Dragon, though,” he says. “They will all tell you that I bleed green.” Darrell Brown didn’t venture far from Southlake after graduation; he joined the Lewisville Fire Department the fall after he graduated, became a certified firefighter and paramedic before the age of 20 and never looked back. In 2011, he joined the Grapevine Fire Department, where he became fire chief in 2014.

After he graduated from Carroll, Lafavers didn’t jump immediately into the barbecue business. He worked in the transportation industry, then as a contractor for Jack Daniels, working as the onsite promotion manager for the George Strait Country Music Festival. When the tour ended, his family asked him to help out in the restaurant. Lafavers did more than just offer an extra pair of hands; he helped build Feedstore BBQ into a beloved Southlake icon. But it’s not just the family restaurant that makes Southlake home for Lafavers; he has lived here since 1974, when his parents moved to town for the school district. His children, now grown, were all Dragons. Now, he awaits his family’s next generation of Dragons. And in the meantime, he’ll make sure the Southlake community is fed well. “The restaurant still contributes either through donations or deep discounts for all CISD schools,” says Lafavers. “Southlake is a special city, but the school district is its ‘signature’ product.” Good to be Home In this holiday season of bustling schedules, home-cooked delights and more family time than you can shake a turkey leg at, there’s no better time to come home. Every year at Christmastime, you’ll find Ed Folliard playing the role of Santa’s elf. While the retired fire chief won’t be decked out in head-to-toe green, he will definitely be in the Christmas spirit as a volunteer at the GRACE Christmas Cottage. “I read an article about the Christmas Cottage one year and then went to an orientation at GRACE before getting involved,” Folliard says. Along with a host of volunteers, Folliard spends November and December setting up the cottage, collecting and sorting gifts before families in need come in to shop for their kiddos. “On Christmas morning, it’s a great feeling to wake up and know you’ve helped well over 1,000 people have a better Christmas,” he says. Last year was extra special for Folliard—he accepted a donation from a woman who had previously been on the receiving end of GRACE’s programs. “She was now able to give back, which is what GRACE is all about—helping people get back on their feet.” Like many North Texans, Folliard has learned the value of volunteering. Not only does serving as a GRACE volunteer benefit those in need in our area, it connects him with like-minded individuals who recognize the need that exists in their own community. GRACE is just one organization in our area that depends on an army of unpaid workers to further its cause. Since 1973, Christian Community Action (CCA) has met the basic needs of families in need throughout North Texas. Several thousand volunteers help this Lewisville-based nonprofit serve more than 10,000 individuals across five counties. Thelma Cantu, volunteer manager, says without volunteers and donations, CCA’s funds would be diverted to administration instead of services. “Volunteers allow us to be leaner and more focused on our mission,” Cantu says. “Donations can be directed Southlake STYLE Magazine
to serving our mission and not added to a CEO’s wallet. That’s what people look for when deciding which charity to support.” While it’s challenging to quantify the value of a volunteer, a Texan’s time can be calculated at $25.11 per hour, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. When you total up the volunteer hours any given organization benefits from each year, the impact of volunteering is significant. In addition, money given by individuals account for 71 percent of charitable contributions. Foundations, corporations and bequests make up the remaining 29 percent. “GRACE wouldn’t be able to fulfill the needs of the community without the commitment of our volunteers,” says Lara Hohweler, volunteer manager. “We make it a point to get to know our volunteers, build those relationships and keep them in the communication loop, so they can see the fruits of their own labors and see the happy faces of those they help.” GRACE also holds an annual appreciation event to recognize its volunteers and inform them of the impact they have on the organization. While no one will argue the value a volunteer brings to a nonprofit, there are added benefits one personally gains that can’t be quantified. When you volunteer with an ongoing program, you get to witness the fruits of your labors. Seeing firsthand growth and change can validate your efforts. And when you work side-by-side with likeminded individuals, friendships and bonds can form. Volunteering on projects that involve a skillset can help you hone your existing talents or learn new ones that may cross over into the workforce. You can also gain a connectedness to your community, increase your sense of selfworth, reduce stress, increase optimism, build camaraderie and uncover hidden talents. “The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired,” says Gordon B. Hinckley, author of Standing for Something. “One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.”
ANSWERING THE CALL TO SERVICE Depending on the organization, the job site or the program, avenues for service abound—for the very young to the young-at-heart. “Our community gardens present opportunities for children as young as toddlers to serve along with their parents,” says Hohweler, who adds that the holidays pose even more service venues for families and teens.

ave you been to Denton lately? Let us suggest the local college town as a refreshing change of pace for date night. A visit to 940’s Kitchen & Cocktails, a buzzy hotspot in the downtown Denton square, is just the place to reinvigorate your weekend plans. The year-old restaurant on Oak Street exudes Denton charm and character (think neon signs and exposed brick), but it’s also upscale with handsome leather seating, elegant globe lights and a menu that begs to be explored. The space has a surprisingly urban feel that’s much more Big D than Little D. It’s part eclectic restaurant, part cocktail lounge. Although children are welcome, we recommend booking a sitter. On our evening visit, we didn’t observe a single kid in the restaurant. The atmosphere and menu are much better suited for a night on the
town with your spouse or a group of friends. And when you can get your favorite cocktails on tap, well, you might not be home before your kids’ bedtime. As for those cocktails, the Black Cherry Vodka Basil Mule is one of the best on tap at 940’s. If you’re part of the Moscow Mule-loving crowd, it’s one you won’t want to miss. This refreshing variation is bright and light with a delightful zing of ginger beer and exhilarating basil. The cocktail is both addicting and delicious, and for $8, it’s a reasonably priced kickoff to your evening. Another thoughtfully crafted libation is the Caipirinha. We weren’t positive how to pronounce it, so we consulted the bartenders. (No one wants to fumble over names at the bar.) It’s pronounced (say it with us): kai-pi-reen-ha.

If you’re looking to mix up your usual mojito or margarita, this is the way to go. 940’s rendition of the classic Brazilian cocktail packs a punch. It’s simple— made with cachaça, lime and sugar— but potent. The restaurant also offers an appealing variety of wine and beer in addition to its extensive cocktail menu. No matter your beverage of choice, rest assured it will have an appetizing accompaniment; the kitchen doesn’t close until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. So if you’re catching a show or just want to enjoy some Denton nightlife, you don’t have to resort to greasy bar grub or fast food. Chef Kellie Doyle is at the helm in the kitchen, which brings forth local, fresh and inspired food. You can order classics such as cheeseburgers and pizza, but expect everything on the menu to have a gourmet slant. Standouts include the Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad (candied pecan, apple, goat cheese and honey lemon vinaigrette) and the Slow Roasted Agave Pork Sandwich (shredded pork, peach habanero barbecue, fried jalapeños, shaved red onion and red cabbage slaw). The most popular menu item is the Short Rib Grilled Cheese (house-made mozzarella, farmhouse cheddar, short rib, caramelized onion and egg), but our group gravitated toward the Shrimp and Grits. 940’s version of the Southern staple is deeply satisfying—and undeniably Texan with Poblano cheddar, Spanish-style cured sausage and chipotle. We needed another Caipirinha to cool down after that showstopper. The menu at 940’s changes seasonally, so there’s always something new to try. The restaurant also offers a handful of vegan and gluten-free items, and many dishes can be adjusted to accommodate special dietary requests. Chef Doyle even welcomes feedback on the food she prepares. “I have a very open-door policy with staff, guests and friends who have great ideas or would love to try a particular type of food,” she says. “Inspiration is all around.” If a late-night drink in Denton isn’t your speed, 940’s weekend brunch is also noteworthy. With menu items such as Stuffed French Toast (Nutella, raspberry and sweet cream cheese) and Veggie Benedict (sautéed veggies, grilled arepa, egg and Bloody Mary hollandaise), you’ll have plenty to contemplate on the short drive north—including whether to order a carafe of sangria or bubbly mimosas. Chef Doyle says, “The brunch menu is definitely something to crave on your Sunday Funday!” Before your schedule fills up with talk of turkeys and holiday itineraries, carve out some time for a trip to Denton. With handcrafted cocktails, gourmet bites and a unique ambiance, 940’s offers the perfect way to spice up your next night out.

But the rustic-chic eatery nestled inside Carroll Pointe aims to be more than a spot to grab a loaf and go; it wants to be your new favorite eatery. Considering that Southlake’s Great Harvest has a five-star rating, more than 1,500 likes and over 350 check-ins on Facebook as of press time, the bakery is certainly on the right track. Founders Bob and Colleen Gothman got inspiration from their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, who strived to feed their families top-quality, nourishing meals. At Great Harvest, this commitment lives on. Customers can expect pure, wholesome food without additives—from the breads to the grain bowls, salads, soups, scones and cookies. You know the bread is fresh when wheat from family-owned Montana farms is milled onsite. And because the bakery is generous with samples, you can get a taste before deciding on a favorite. With options such as sourdough, cinnamon chip and cheddar garlic, there’s a bread to suit every taste bud.

On our lunch visit, the friendly baker behind the counter offered a slice of the honey whole-wheat while we contemplated the menu. The bread was soft and subtly sweet, made even better with a smear of butter from a little jar on the counter. Our party ordered two sandwiches, though hot paninis and wraps are also on the menu. The Turkey and Swiss on sourdough was an elevated version of what we could make at home and certainly far from ho-hum, but we wish it was served with something more than a pickle spear. A sandwich that’s nearly $10 is hard to swallow; add in a side and a drink and you have a fairly pricey lunch. But still, we’ll return to Great Harvest. The bistro is perfect for a light breakfast, lunch or dinner, with plenty of enticing options on the menu that extend beyond bread. And what’s a bakery without a great cup of coffee? Great Harvest serves craft Avoca Roasters coffee that wakes you up and satisfies your java craving. Not only that, but customers also have the choice of espresso, tea, craft beers and wine. If you’re in need of a quick gift (sending a care package to your college student, perhaps?), Great Harvest offers baskets filled with handmade bread and treats. What more could you want from your local neighborhood bakery? If you ask us, bread is never a bad idea. Great Harvest bakes up some of the best around, including a variety of crave-worthy baked goods. Store-bought loaves and treats don’t stand a chance against this level of freshness.

The Florida-based breakfast, brunch and lunch concept makes it easy to elevate your earlyday meals all week long. Whether you’re a seasoned brunch enthusiast or you’re just excited to welcome a restaurant to Southlake that doesn’t dish out mainly burgers or Mexican food, prepare to add Another Broken Egg Café to your regular rotation. The restaurant is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving dishes that hit the spot and span the flavor spectrum. Craving something hearty and filling? Tempting options abound, from scrambled skillet creations and crave-worthy omelettes to fanciful salads and sandwiches. Prefer to explore the sweet side of the menu? Treat yourself to delightful renditions of breakfast favorites: pancakes, French toast, waffles, cinnamon rolls and more. Even the granola is worth getting excited about. A mountain of honeyroasted granola is mixed with blueberry quinoa and crowned with fresh berries, coconut-crusted bananas and a drizzle of vanilla yogurt. Accompanied by a little pitcher of milk on the side, it’s basically a healthy breakfast sundae. If you have no qualms about indulging, we suggest the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. On the savory side, the Lobster and Brie Omelette is outrageously good. This cream cheese-filled egg specialty is stuffed with Brie and sautéed lobster meat, then adorned with diced tomatoes, green onions and a light champagne butter sauce. It’s a sure step up from anything you might think about preparing at home. Another Broken Egg will romance you hard with luscious options and generous servings, but it also offers plenty for the health-conscious crowd. Take the Simply Salmon dish, for example. A healthy portion of Southwestern-seasoned salmon is served on a bed of colorful sautéed veggies. It’s a smart choice for a well-rounded meal. Or, just keep it simple with a cozy bowl of steel cut oats. Topped with mixed berries, local honey and fresh-grated cinnamon, it’s certainly not a bad way to start the day. Neither is sipping a boozy beverage. The Nutella Iced Latte is not to be missed. Cold-brew coffee is combined with Nutella and RumChata, topped with a dollop of whipped cream and garnished with a biscuit beignet and a thick strip of bacon. It’s bliss in beverage form. Other brunchy cocktails such as bellinis, mimosas and sangria will also add a ray of sunshine to your morning. Another Broken Egg Café puts breakfast on a pedestal. Which, if you ask us, is exactly where it needs to be.

Pull Up a Chair at The Table Where exceptional meals are served and memories are made Four years ago, Bruce Wills, a general manager for Wolfgang Puck, was transplanted to the Metroplex and soon grew hungry for a new adventure. He envisioned his own restaurant, where people would gather with friends and family to partake in memorable feasts. Where good food accompanied good drinks and conversations about the stuff that matters. Wills deemed The Table a fitting name for many reasons. “Every time we met to discuss ideas, we sat at my table,” Wills says of his early brainstorming sessions. “The family table is where kids do homework, where we eat and drink, where life happens. And in the Bible, Jesus invites us all to His table.” The actual tables in the restaurant are made of reclaimed wood from a demolished building in Dallas. Wills had them refurbished but left behind as much character as possible. “I love the imperfection in everything.” Wills and his team at The Table deliver on a promise to serve scratch-made, old-fashioned dishes with a global influence. Partly owing to Wills’ tenure with Wolfgang Puck and Chef Ray Skradzinski’s East Coast-Polish-German heritage, the menu features classic filling and delicious New American fare.

As the weather cools off, The Table’s offerings segue into heartier dishes such as arancini—risotto rolled into balls, dipped in panko and then fried—and handmade sausages and pierogis. Expect a pasta-of-the-day such as ravioli made from seasonal ingredients and a catch-of-the-day—grouper, cod, flounder—along with a chef’s cut—perhaps ribeye or filet. Even sides change with the seasons as fresh veggies and fruits find their way from local farms and orchards to The Table. “Ray cooks the food he loves,” Wills says. “I couldn’t care less if people know me, but I want them to know our chef.” That’s why, on any given night, Chef Ray will roam from table to table, talking to folks about what they enjoyed eating. And Wills can be found greeting guests, polishing glasses at the bar or busing tables. “I love the high energy and noise and interaction with people,” Wills says, owing his flair for hospitality to a skill he honed during his long career with Puck. While Wills’ passion is serving great food, one of his first gigs was tending bar, and he’s never lost his knack for crafting the perfect drink. “I’m a big fan of Prohibition-style cocktails,” he says. His brother, Daniel, followed in his big brother’s footsteps and builds drinks to-order behind the bar at The Table. “We have a lot of fun with our guests,” Wills adds. Wills’ next venture is scheduled to open in Deep Ellum in February 2017—a little edgier venue with a rock-star name: Idle Rye. But he’ll still be found here, making new friends and serving up fresh food the way it was meant to be enjoyed—around The Table.

Volunteering at the Give Kids The World Village in Kissimmee, Florida, is for all ages. Spending time as a family helping other families is a great way to teach your kids the importance of sharing their time and talents. With more than 50 volunteer opportunities including airport greetings, running errands or even dressing up as a fairytale character, there’s a chance for everyone in the family to find a personal way to give back. Many of the opportunities can be fulfilled by a parent and child (12+), or independently by an individual over the age of 16 or 18. No matter what the “job” description is, you’ll be responsible for putting a smile on a child’s face.
Global Volunteers is a nonprofit that connects individuals who wish to volunteer internationally in countries that need the most help. It offers a variety of projects in more than 200 host communities around the world. The organization works closely with these communities to identify needs that are not being met. Projects are then created, and you can visit the Global Volunteers website to find a service opportunity that fits your schedule and talents. One such project is in Quito, Ecuador, where volunteers are needed to assist with and provide material resources to children living in poverty. Children attend daycare while their mothers work, and as a volunteer, you will play with and teach the young children. There is also a need for maintenance for the playgrounds and classrooms. One- and two-week programs are offered year-round for the Quito project, and a fee associated with participation covers your accommodations, which includes a stay at a tourist-class hotel. You also will be provided with three meals each day. The projects are designed with families in mind—all ages can participate, as long as those under 18 years old are accompanied by an adult.

Founded in 1976, the nonprofit American Hiking Society prides itself in being the “national voice for hikers.” The national organization promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas and the hiking experience. The organization leads conservation efforts and provides important resources to help plan, fund and develop trails. As a result, volunteer opportunities abound. Consisting of trail stewardship projects on America’s public lands, volunteer vacations are weeklong opportunities designed to assist land managers with trail maintenance needs. To participate, volunteers apply to be part of a crew, which is comprised of six to 15 volunteers and a crew leader. Your weeklong excursion involves backpacking or day hiking, and accommodations vary from primitive campsites to bunkhouses or cabins. Tools and supervision are provided by the host agency or organization you will be assisting. Volunteers should be in good physical condition, but prior trail maintenance experience is not necessary. All ages are welcome on most trips, but those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

At Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, you can enjoy all the luscious, buttery goodness without lifting a finger in the kitchen. We caught up with Kimberly Murray, owner of the Colleyville location, to talk about the season’s favorite sweet just before you start planning your holiday gatherings. How did the bakery get its name? Buttermilk Sky derived its name from an old Southern expression for a sky that has the appearance of clabbered buttermilk. Since we use buttermilk in our recipes and are known for being the taste of Southern tradition, our founders thought it was fitting.
Give us an idea of pie sales on a typical week and your projections for Thanksgiving week. During a typical week, we sell 2,000 to 3,000 of our four-inch and nine-inch pies. During Thanksgiving week, we expect to double this amount.
What’s the secret to the pies at Buttermilk Sky? Our pies are baked from family recipes that we hope evoke memories of special times spent with friends and family. We bake our made-from-scratch pies fresh every day and strive to make our guests feel as though they are entering the home of a friend or family member.
Who makes your pies? In addition to our super-strong pie-crust-pressing crew, we have fabulous bakers who come in before sunrise to bake the pies every morning and prepare the fillings for the next day. As we expect Thanksgiving week to be extremely busy, all four owners will be helping out in the shop that week. We’ll also welcome back several college students who will be returning to the area for the holidays.
What selections are you excited to roll out for the holidays? For Thanksgiving, we’re excited to offer our Spiced Pumpkin Pie. We start with our buttery shortbread crust, add our pumpkin filling, top with brown sugar crumble and scatter a few shortbread leaves on top to make the pie as pretty as it is delicious. We’re also eager for our December Pie It Forward flavor, Peppermint Brownie—a rich, fudgy brownie recipe garnished with a sprinkle of crumbled candy canes. Each month, we partner with a local organization and offer a special pie flavor, our Pie It Forward, to help raise money and awareness for organizations that make a difference in our communities. Where do you get inspiration for new pie recipes? We love to hear what flavors our guests are interested in! And we look forward to sharing one of our newest daring combinations—Maple Chess Pie with brown sugar bacon topping—on Fridays and Saturdays in November and December. Have you tried any flavor combinations that just didn’t work?There was a peppermint eggnog pie that wasn’t a great seller and was put to rest in the flavor graveyard. Do you take custom requests for pies? For special events, we can bake off-season flavors if the minimum quantity is met and the ingredients are available. Our first wedding order included our cherry pie that was off-season at the time, but we were thrilled to fulfill that request.

Which part of the pie is most complicated to make? Each step in the process has its own challenges. The crust is physically challenging because each crust is pressed by hand and requires a lot of strength along with the ability to sculpt a pretty crimp along the edge of the crust. Many of our fillings are challenging due to constant stirring on the cooktop for long periods of time so there aren’t any lumps and the filling doesn’t burn. An artistic and delicate hand is required for the toppings because we eat with our eyes first! What’s your personal favorite pie flavor? Our signature flavor, the I-40 Pie. Named after a highway in Tennessee, it’s a pecan pie with chocolate chips and coconut in our shortbread crust. Warm it up a bit so the chocolate chips are gooey, add a cup of hot coffee, and I’m a happy camper. Are you a filling or a crust person? Or both? Crust. All day, every day, crust! Our Thumbprint Cookies are made with our shortbread crust dough, and it takes incredible willpower for me keep from popping one in my mouth every time I walk by. What do you love about making pies and special treats?It is such a joy to provide sweet treats that make so many people happy. There is no place I would rather be.

efore you indulge in turkey and pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving, bring the entire family to the country’s largest Thanksgiving Day run: the 49th Annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot. There’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than joining thousands of runners for a heart-pumping jaunt through Big D. These 5K and eight-mile races benefit YMCA programs that go right back into helping the Metroplex and its people. New this year is a team challenge that allows groups of four to six runners to compete for team awards in five different categories, with medals awarded to the top three teams in each division. Want to bring some hard-won hardware to your Thanksgiving table (and have a little something to brag about, too)? Here’s your chance. The event has something for everyone—including complimentary fruit and water for runners. Vendors will also be on site with a variety of sips and snacks. Even if you don’t feel like getting your run or walk on, there are plenty of family-friendly activities for your entire crew. Think bounce houses, live music and plenty of hands-on activities. Don’t be surprised if you see a few people in turkey costumes running around to add to the fun. Before you leave, look for the giant inflatable turkey—it’s the perfect spot for a fun family photo. This is a rain-or-shine event, so get ready to make some memories on Thanksgiving morning (and maybe start a new family tradition)!

rammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling recording act Pentatonix is coming to Dallas during the second leg of their 2016 World Tour, with special guests Us The Duo. Since bursting onto the scene in 2011, this a capella group from Arlington, Texas, has sold millions of albums, amassed more than 1.5 billion views on their YouTube channel and sold out venues worldwide.
