from the beginning

My best friend from high school had a rock tumbler when he was in grade school. Another friend always loved marine biology. I had a knack for engaging friends, starting clubs and selling artwork and candy as early as the second grade.

As the three of us grew, we spread our wings into other ventures. Photography for one, journalism for the other and genetic engineering for me. Better late than never, we all came back to nest as our younger selves.

My best friend found his way back to geology and tore through his Ph.D. program in record time — earning a tenured professorship by his mid-30s. My other friend eventually discovered ornithology and is currently a Ph.D. candidate who loves her work. And, after a decade in healthcare, I found my way back to community engagement and entrepreneurship through publishing.

From the beginning, there was a spark. Something our parents and friends saw in us at a young age that eventually shined through. This is also the case with both of our feature stories this month.

Kristian Nightengale was a self-professed girly girl in love with makeup and all things pretty. After years of schooling and working her way up the ladder, she is now an experienced aesthetician and entrepreneur with a new line of cosmetics bearing her name.

Our cover woman, Dr. Claudia Beeny, loved playing teacher as a little girl and mentoring others as a resident assistant in college. Today, she helps people of all ages find their purpose through her nonprofit House Of Shine. Read on and make plans to join us at our sixth annual Women’s Luncheon, where she’ll share even more as the event’s keynote speaker.

Guiding Light Guiding Light A A

Dr. Claudia Beeny has always been passionate about people. Whether it was during her time as a resident assistant or helping college students through her work in higher education, Dr. Beeny has dedicated her life to helping others. Her kindness and compassion are especially evident through her nonprofit, House of Shine, which exists solely to help everyone ages 5-95 discover and build upon what makes them unique.

Since starting House of Shine 14 years ago on her own, the entity has grown to include a headquarters in down town Grapevine, along with eight full-time staff members and seven regular volunteers. Together they provide a wide variety of self-discovery workshops, events and interactive programming specifically tailored for adults, youths and parents. With year 15 now on the horizon, Dr. Beeny has no intention of slowing down her mission of self-discovery.

A FOUNDATION IN EDUCATION

Growing up the daughter of a teacher, coaching young girls in gymnastics and serving as a camp counselor, edu cation was always in the cards for Dr. Beeny.

“I think I have been a teacher my entire life,” Dr. Beeny says. “Even when I was a little girl, I would play school with my best friend… it’s truly in my DNA.”

When she entered college at Arizona State University, her love of helping others led to her taking a position as a resident assistant (RA).

“I would love all of my RA-related activities,” Dr. Beeny says. “One day somebody said, ‘You know you can do this as a career?’ and I just had no idea.”

That one suggestion set the path for Dr. Beeny’s life. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she attended the University of Georgia and got her Master of Education in college student counseling and personnel services.

“I always thought [counseling students] was just super important work because what we’re really doing is building that next generation of leaders who are going out into the world,” Dr. Beeny says. “It always felt very important and meaningful.”

For the next decade, Dr. Beeny worked on college cam puses across the country like Miami University and South ern Methodist University, working as the assistant director of resident life and the director of new student programs, respectively. Then in 2000, feeling a call to immerse herself in the college curricula, she returned to the University of Georgia to get a Ph.D. of Philosophy in higher education and administration. After receiving her doctorate in 2003, Dr. Beeny worked as the dean of students at Bellarmine University, then as director of freshman seminar, instructor and grant administrator at the University of North Texas.

“College campuses are different from K-12 schools be cause in K-12, they’re teaching content. But in higher educa tion, they’re actually generating the knowledge that they’re then teaching in high schools,” Dr. Beeny says. “I wanted to be a part of the group that was creating knowledge and content.”

FORGING HER PATH

While working with college students eagerly looking to find their way in life, Dr. Beeny began brainstorming a methodology she calls “Shine” for helping people toward self-discovery. The word itself also serves as an acronym for strengths, hobbies, interests, needs and experiences — all important aspects of what makes a person unique.

“‘Shine’ is a piece of who I am as a human being,” Dr. Beeny says. “People will contribute commensurate with what they’re good at and how good they feel about their contributions. Our best contributions are embedded in our talents and strengths.”

Developing that message started with a simple task that Dr. Beeny confronted with fierce determination: writing a blog.

“Through the act of writing six days a week for six years, what really began to happen is my life philosophy began to emerge,” Dr. Beeny says. “I realized I was actually writing about excellence. I was writing about people in the com munity who were standing out, going above and beyond and making real contributions that mattered. That quickly became people who shine.”

14 • OCT 22 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE

Developing this method through her blogging, it didn’t take long for Dr. Beeny to realize how fulfilling this work was to her. While preparing a lesson plan, Dr. Beeny real ized she needed a change. Teaching an essay about the difference between rivers and floods, Dr. Beeny’s eyes opened to the fact that she was living like a flood — which is unruly and dangerous — and she wanted to be more like a river, with boundaries and parameters.

“I was trying to do all these different things… and I just closed the book and realized I didn’t want to be a flood anymore,” Dr. Beeny says. “I wanted to be a river.”

After finishing her final semester working in higher edu cation in 2011, she set out to manifest her own shine and never looked back.

MANIFESTING SHINE

Dr. Beeny was a one-person team for a while, spreading the Shine method through blog posts, which continued to gain readers and popularity. Eventually, with a desire to be gin creating the method’s curriculum, she hired a graphic designer named Maureen as House of Shine’s first full-time employee to help bring her words to life through design.

“I’m an ideas person. I have a lot of ideas… but I don’t know how to make any of it look good,” Dr. Beeny says. “Maureen knows how to take my ideas and how to make them look like a million bucks. So I will maintain to this very day that one of the reasons we are as far along as we are is because people looked at our material and thought we were this very large operation when in reality, it was just the two of us cranking all of this work out.”

The content and curriculum created were used to go into schools and teach it to students so they could dis cover their unique strengths and talents. As helpful as the curriculum was in schools, Dr. Beeny and Maureen began aiming even higher. They knew the next step for the Shine message was to build a physical space where teachers,

students and the community could visit and where the ef forts on how to Shine were more focused.

“It started as a blog. Then it [became] curriculum that was taught in schools,” Dr. Beeny says. “Eventually, we gained enough momentum and interest that we were able to open our own physical space.”

The momentum that carried the Shine method from a curriculum to a physical space was partly due to a fourfold increase in grant support from its inception in 2014 to 2019.

But turning the Shine message into a physical location was no easy feat as there was reasonable apprehension about moving forward with buying a building and all of its inherent responsibilities.

“For me, it was very scary,” Dr. Beeny says. “Thankfully, I surround myself with great people. There were other folks on our team that just said, ‘We got this. We have all the content we need, and we have a following. The only thing that we need to do is not be fearful and take the plunge.’”

The journey to opening the House of Shine began with a hunt, looking around Southlake, Grapevine and Colleyville for the perfect spot.

“It was so important to me that the place feels like a community and every piece of the building should have that energy that just feels like it’s a thriving community,” Dr. Beeny says.

While nice, the larger spaces Dr. Beeny and her team toured did not exude the communal spirit they were trying to build.

“I just couldn’t wrap my head around how we were go ing to make these very large, 12,000-square-foot spaces feel like a community,” Dr. Beeny says.

Everything changed, however, when the team came upon a smaller location — sitting around 3,000 square feet — at 334 S. Barton St. in Grapevine.

“When we walked in, it was unbelievable,” Dr. Beeny says. “Immediately, I knew. The light that was streaming in through the windows was amazing. It just felt right.”

Everything fell into place from there, and Dr. Beeny and her team closed on the building in November 2019.

“I had been thinking about [a physical space], whether or not I acknowledged it,” Dr. Beeny says. “I know these ideas had been running through my head for the last 14 years, and all of the content already existed. It was really just a matter of matching content to physical spaces, and that was not hard at all.”

After nearly a year of renovations, House of Shine of ficially opened its doors in September 2020.

“When I walked into this space, there was something about it that I cannot actually verbalize what happened to me,” says Chelsea Troxler, House of Shine’s managing director. “It was an emotional feeling that I couldn’t ex press — that I could feel.”

Visitors of all ages are immediately greeted by plenty of bright colors, natural light and friendly faces. The Shine Lab takes up most of the nonprofit’s first room, where volunteers or staff members take guests through the method.

The building also includes a space affectionately named the School Bus. It’s a long room painted bright yellow that can accommodate over 30 kids for story time, art classes, field trips and other fun activities.

And every aspect of the building is dedicated to the cause. The hallway is affectionately named the GalleRay, after House of Shine’s anthropomorphic lightbulb of a mascot Ray Wattson, and features artwork chronicling his many adventures. Meanwhile, a conference room features a large Lazy Susan table perfect for lively conversations and team-building activities for corporate clientele.

Members of the community — from families and friends to co-workers and colleagues — can also take a seat in the commons, which is full of tables and comfy chairs to relax in.

“Everything in here revolves around the Shine frame work,” Chelsea says. “I think what I love the most is that I know it’s real. It’s so tangible of what we’re doing.”

Even the bathrooms are dedicated to self-discovery. One of the bathroom’s walls is covered in pages from the book “Colorstrology: What Your Birthday Color Says About You” so visitors can search for their birthday and learn from what they read.

“There’s not a person that comes in here that doesn’t say that when they leave, they feel better, happier, more joyful and more proud,” Dr. Beeny says. “It’s a happy place.”

THE MESSAGE IN ACTION

Spreading the Shine message and method isn’t just about the physical spaces of its building. House of Shine creates exhibits for guests of all ages to come in and ex perience, hosts workshops for visitors from every walk of life and is always available to help anyone from a child to a corporate executive through the process of self-discov ery.

The first exhibit at House of Shine was called “Life Maps: A Journey Back To My 12-Year-Old Self,” and fea tured notable individuals including famed sportscaster Lewis Johnson, who has worked for most every major TV

network from NBC and CBS to ABC to ESPN.

“What it was doing was challenging people to think about how the experiences in their life got them from where they were all the way up to who they are today,” Dr. Beeny says.

The new interactive exhibit, entitled “Opportunity Knocks,” is both a literal and physical metaphor of life that helps people unlock their potential.

“This exhibit is really designed to get people thinking about doors opening, doors closing and how the choic es and the decisions they make actually help impact the journey that they take through their lives,” Dr. Beeny says.

Meanwhile, some of the nonprofit’s workshop offer ings include What’s Your Shine? — a three-part series anyone can take that focuses on discovering your Shine, Rise & Shine — a monthly program designed for women to learn about aspects of themselves, and Discover Your Strengths — a workshop that centers around Gallup’s StrengthsFinder 2.0.

“I think that’s really the power of the message,” Chel sea says. “It’s not like when you come to a class, you close the book and you leave. You actually get to access these tools every single day, utilize them and live your dream.”

SPREADING THE SHINE

Since opening, House of Shine’s message has spread beyond its walls. In 2020, Dr. Beeny wrote a book titled “What’s Your Shine? A Method For Discovering Who You Are And Why It Matters.” The nonprofit also set up a small outpost at the OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Chil dren’s Center for Science & Technology in Youngstown, Ohio.

But that isn’t the only expansion House of Shine has on the horizon. The nonprofit is experimenting with a plan to scale and grow its popular monthly women’s program, the Rise & Shine workshop, and offer it in Frisco and Dal las next year.

And House of Shine reached a significant milestone earlier this year when it comes to the Shine method. The nonprofit graduated its sixth class of Shineologists — people trained in the methodology and go out helping people and spreading the Shine message.

Whether it's through exhibits, workshops, her book or just by connecting with people she meets, Dr. Beeny is proud to help people on their journey toward self-discov ery.

“There’s not anything that we do in life, from relation ships to goals to interactions with other [people], that doesn’t demand us to know who we are,” she expresses. “When we don’t know who we are, we trip and stumble way more than we need to. So the process of self-dis covery is like literally handing you a roadmap and saying, ‘Here’s how to maneuver and navigate the situation based on what you know about self.’”

And though she does have hobbies outside of House of Shine such as spending time with her family and friends, reading and going on walks, she doesn’t tire of the work she does.

“It’s who I am,” Dr. Beeny says. “It’s my point of inter section. It is me using my talents and my interests to fill a need that I know the world needs.”

41 Dragons Named National Merit Semifinalists

A record number of Dragons are now eligible for major scholarship dollars

Co ngratulations are in order as Southlake Carroll set a new school record when they announced 41 Dragons as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists on Sept. 14th. Every year since its inception in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has qualified approximately 50,000 students across the country having the high est PSAT/NMSQT ® Selection Index scores. The list of National Merit Semifinalists represents more than 16,000 students, or roughly 0.1% of the nation’s esti mated 15.4 million students.

To ensure that academically-driven students from all parts of the United States are included in the selec tion pool, semifinalists are designated on a state-repre sentational basis. Semifinalists are the highest-scoring

entrants from each state, of which Texas produced 1,571. The 41 members of the Dragon Class of 2023 represent the highest number ever selected from Carroll ISD.

“As educators in Carroll ISD, it’s our absolute honor to be part of the educational journey with these students,” Carroll Senior High School principal Ryan Wilson says via media release. “We look forward to supporting them as they now apply for the position of finalist.”

On a rolling basis beginning in March and ending in June 2023, scholars and their respective school princi pals will be notified if they are finalists to be considered for more than $30 million in scholarships.

“I am so pleased to see our students excelling in this stellar program that will serve them well for many years, even after they graduate from CISD,” Carroll ISD Super intendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter says.

DRAGONS PRESENTED WITH LONE STAR CUP

After winning the recognition over the summer, Southlake Carroll officially received the Lone Star Cup during a special ceremony with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) during last month’s homecoming game. Before the Dragons handily defeated Keller Timber Creek 51-0 on Sept. 16, UIL representatives presented the highly-coveted award to the district during the halftime show. Earning the cup with 131 points across all of Carroll’s academics and athletics, the district has now won the award eight times — more than any other district in the state of Texas. “We are proud of our students’ historic win,” CISD superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter says. “With the new school year underway, we already have our sights set on next year’s cup.”

” SOUTHLAKE STYLE

(L-R) Kelly Rose, Nicole Tesoriero, Andrea Hatchett and Kelly Twedell
Our goal has always been, and always will be, to tell the positive stories of Southlake.

THIS INSPIRING DESIGNER IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY, FASHION AND PHILANTHROPY.

If you’ve shopped in Southlake Town Square, you know the name Kendra Scott. Back in 2002, this aspiring entrepreneur went door to door, selling her jewelry to local boutiques in Austin. Today, the business in her namesake has stores nationwide and is valued at over $1 billion. Amidst all of the excitement during her visit to Southlake last month, we caught up with the CEO-turned-author about her highly-anticipated new book “Born To Shine.”

I OPENED MY FIRST BUSINESS WHEN… I was 19 years old. At the time, my stepdad was battling brain cancer, and it upset me to see how irritated his head would get from rubbing against his scratchy baseball hats. I knew there had to be a better alternative, so I decided I could open a business selling all types of hats and some of the profits could go to cancer research. It was the perfect blend of my love of fashion and the op portunity to do good, which I feel is my purpose.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL BUG BIT ME AGAIN… after I became pregnant with my son. Fashion was always a passion, but I didn’t know how to sew, so I turned to hand-crafted jewelry. Pulling apart dif ferent materials, mixing metals and reconstruct ing them to make something really beautiful that women could adorn was so fun for me.

I’VE ALWAYS LOVED… the bright, rich colors found in natural, semi-precious gemstones, but I could never find jewelry that appealed to me that was also affordably priced. Then when I was preg nant, I signed up for a jewelry-making class at a local bead shop, and I fell in love with the process of seeing my imagination turn into something tangible. And when I started seeing the joy my jewelry brought to friends, family — heck, even strangers — I knew I had something special.

I GOT MY BIG BREAK… during the 2008 reces sion. Up until that year, we were solely a whole sale business. The business world was looking bleak, and many of my clients were shuttering their stores. This made me realize that my busi ness was relying on other businesses and that I had zero connection to our customers. For my business to survive, I had to do something drastic. I came up with a business plan, went to my local banker and asked for a loan to open our very first store in Austin. This completely changed the trajectory of my business, and we’ve been climbing ever since.

OPENING OUR FIRST STORE WAS… a surreal experience, and it was just as magical as opening the 100th. It brings me so much joy to see how the brand has grown and put so much good out into the world over the last 20 years.

THE KEY TO MY SUCCESS IS… I’ve stayed true to myself and my core beliefs, and that includes choosing kindness and treating each and every customer like family. We will never compromise on our commitment to our core values, and our customers and employees appreciate that. I believe that when you’re authentic and do good, success will follow.

ONE OF MY BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS… is my family. I get so much joy watching my three sons grow, learn and achieve their own accomplish ments. Another would have to be launching the Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leader ship Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. It was so important to me to create a community of diversity, inclusion and entrepreneurship. There are so many barriers women in business face, and I’m thrilled to see how many women we’ve already empowered since its unveiling.

I HOPE READERS TAKE AWAY FROM MY BOOK… that there is power in vulnerability. No one is perfect, and that is exactly what makes each of us special. If a single reader comes away feeling inspired to lean into their uniqueness and feels empowered to follow their dreams, then I’ve suc ceeded.

WOMEN ACROSS THE GLOBE CAN EXPECT… we will continue to spark conversation on female entrepreneurs and what the next generation of leaders will look like. There are so many smart, capable women out there, and I think it’s so impor tant to empower them to pursue their dreams and make an impact, no matter what they may be.

Kristian Nightengale Soars With New Skin Care Collection

Sometimes, a parent can see the future for their children. It was evident to Temple Shockley early on that her daughter was destined to shine in the beauty industry one day. While other 5-year-olds were coloring with crayons, little Kristian Nightengale preferred coloring with lipsticks, eye shadows and nail pol ishes. Embracing the world of make-believe with a hot pink notebook in hand, she would pretend to work at a beauty counter peddling her color ful ideas and glittery concoctions to her younger siblings.

As a teen, she continued to embrace her inner girly girl participating in pageants, cheerleading, modeling and glamming up her friends for any and all occasions. While other teenagers flipped burgers or babysat for a few extra dollars, Kristian worked at the cosmetics retail chain Ulta Beauty — further surrounding herself in the world of nation ally-renowned beauty products.

Armed with big dreams and three suitcases, the small-town Texas girl hopped on a plane des tined for California and a degree in Cosmetic Arts from Hollywood’s Westmore Academy. The bud ding makeup maven’s first career opportunity was working for Hollywood’s notorious celebrity styl ist Jose Eber, specializing in makeup, airbrushing and special effects. Her work was seen everywhere from high fashion runways and films to print maga zines.

After several years of working on the more glamorous side of the business, Kristian still want ed more. Craving a clinical background, she went back to school and eventually became licensed in medical aesthetics and honed her skills working with dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

Having conquered California, this southern girl knew she was ready to anchor her roots back home in Texas. When the time was right, her clini cal knowledge of the beauty industry and special brand of personal glitter made her a perfect fit at Southlake’s Corinthian Wellness & Med Spa.

“Everything fell into place naturally. Everything I was involved in fell into my lap,” Kristian says.

BUILDING THE HOUSE OF NIGHTENGALE

As an apprentice at CWS, Kristian bonded with the spa’s owner Judi McQueary, literally working her way from the ground up. In those early days, she did everything from errands and answering phones to basic foot soaks. Over the course of a decade, she observed best practices in spa servic es and watched retail products fly off the shelves. Building a firm foundation of knowledge, she as cended to the role of senior aesthetic clinician at the prestigious Southlake spa.

Kristian’s extremely grateful for the apprentice work that helped form a solid foundation in her business.

( )

“[Judi] took me under her wings and showed me how to grow a brand,” Kristian says. “She inspires me and always encourages me in my journey.”

The experience of watching her namesake skin care collection come to fruition is akin to building a house. Designing every part of the collection from its signature pink and gold packaging to formulat ing the proper consistency of each product was all a labor of love. Always enamored in the details, she would ruminate over every decision. She wanted everything to be just right, including the tiny night ingale bird perched on the letter “N.”

Drawn to luxurious tastes and grand gestures, she even delights customers by adding gold and white confetti that cascades out of the packaging, inviting customers to join her perpetual party as you celebrate and pamper yourself.

The meticulous businesswoman’s pretty pack aging was good for the initial buy-in, but she also knew the products had to be effective in order to maintain repeat business. She employed a lab and got to work with product trials and tests that were crucial in building out a full line of products that include facial cleansers, exfoliators, antioxidant se rums and anti-aging moisturizers.

BRAINS MEET BEAUTY

The secret to Kristian’s success is in her ability to differentiate and assimilate medical-grade products with quality over-the-counter ingredients. Combin ing science and beauty, she incorporates the cell nourishing qualities of Vitamin A and the antioxi dant properties of Vitamins C and E to top-of-theline ingredients like Egyptian rose water. What fol lows is a line of products that help protect from sun damage and aging, all while balancing the skin’s natural oils to reduce dryness and redness.

Perhaps the real beauty behind her budding line is that it has been designed to be used in conjunc tion with each product to enhance efficacy for for mula-driven results. Customers are encouraged to mix and match products for their own customized

approach in improving fine lines, brightening skin and improving pore size.

Kristian’s knowledge and expertise are poured into her products' formulations, provid ing well-hydrated, brightened skin that glows.

For three and a half years, she worked close ly with her team of scientists and designers — not even letting the pandemic keep her from realizing her potential. Then on April 18th this year, the entrepreneur’s skin care dream be came a reality with the launch of the Kristian Nightengale line of products.

After navigating the clinical and cosmetics industry for 15 years, Kristian’s products are now on display with top-name brands at Co rinthian Wellness & Med Spa, with plans to start online distribution in the near future.

As those who know Kristian would expect, the launch party was a sight to behold in all things pink. She curated every detail from the pink carpet and pink champagne to the mini pink and gold ombre glitter-bombed cham pagne bottle favors passed out to guests. Thanks to her fans and loyal Instagram follow ing of 20,000, the sought-after skin care line sold out in just two months with eager clients going on a waitlist.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

If there’s anything Kristian loves more than makeup and her pink stiletto heels, it’s her hus band Swade and daughters Saylor and Bryton. A third Nightengale is expected to join the nest in May 2023.

Despite her penchant for parties, there are no plans for an over-the-top gender reveal — they are just looking forward to being surprised.

“I love that the girls at such a young age can see their mom do this,” she says. “It’s so impor tant to see that you can set goals and follow your heart, accomplish your dreams and be a mom.”

Just as she balances formulations, Kristian has a knack for balancing family life as well. Even going so far as to name some of the prod ucts after her two daughters, Saylor and Bry ton. Printed on the shiny gold jar of clarifying clay mask, you’ll recognize her spouse’s name cleverly placed on her clay mask, “PerSwade Me.”

“Bryton The Day” is a powerful illuminating moisturizer that restores the skin’s natural bar rier and hydration. Her multi-purpose product, “Saylor Darling,” utilizes the same Egyptian rose water as a great makeup-setting spray or post-sun refresher.

More importantly, the playful names help remind Kristian that work and family life must maintain a delicate rhythm. A rhythm that, thanks to her own mother living close by, they can all be a part of together.

“We are extremely blessed to have my mother as our nanny,” she says. “Though the saying is overused, it takes a village.”

Hugos Invitados Brings High-End Margaritas And More To The West Village

Dallas’ West Village continues to be a hot spot for new and exciting restaurants. Hugos In vitados, a Mexican concept that originally opened in Las Colinas, is now among the es tablishments calling the area home after opening earlier this year.

“It was the perfect place [and] the perfect time for us,” says Matt Whiteley, the director of brands for Hos pitality Inspirado, the restaurant group behind Hugos Invitados. “We’ve been wanting to be in Uptown for a long time.”

As guests step into the concept, they are quickly entranced by its airy interior featuring bright oranges, greens and browns. Greenery and soft lighting only help deepen the aesthetic decor. Meanwhile, the restaurant

features a large interior dining room, a bar area and a patio — the latter of which is set to host live music.

Start the night off at the bar, which showcases dozens of different liquor choices.

“We’re proud to say we have one of the largest selections of agave spirits in the region,” Matt says. “Our entire bar is backlit, so you can get a very clear picture of what we have in stock at any one time.”

Some of those agave spirit options include familiar names like Casamigos, Don Julio and Patron Silver and other high-end labels like Tres Generaciones Plata and Maestro Dobel.

Of course, margaritas are in abundance at Hu gos Invitados. The traditional margarita is made with Dulce Vida organic tequila, orange liqueur

and agave, while more inventive versions include the fruity Blueberry Smash — Codigo 1530 Blanco, fresh blueberry pu ree, orange liqueur and agave — and the flavor-packed Spicy Oaxaca featuring Marfa Mezcal espadin, pineapple puree, habanero agave, hibiscus agave and lime juice.

For ultimate happy hour vibes, take a chance on the CBD margarita, which has a two max per guest limit and made with Casa Noble Reposado, orange liqueur and CBD-infused organic agave.

After a few drinks, it’s time to settle down for your meal — and Hugos Invitados only serves the very best for its guests.

“It’s Latin-infused, it’s Mexican-influenced and it’s very organic and all-natural,” Matt says. “We make absolutely ev erything in-house. Everything is fresh every day.”

The appetizer options range from avocado toast with a corn masa patty, salsa roja botanera and queso fresco to Octopus A La Parrilla, which is ancho-marinated and paired with roasted poblano mash, red onions and milpa tomatillo sauce.

When it comes to the main course, Hugos Invitados makes its carne asada with ancho chili-marinated wagyu flap sirloin and serves it alongside a poblano rajas enchilada and pearl onion guiso. Meanwhile, the pan-seared red snapper is presented alongside jumbo lump crab meat, squash blos soms, chayote, mango and fingerling potatoes in a white wine chilpachole sauce.

Guests with heartier appetites will delight in the all-nat ural mulato chile-marinated pork tomahawk with sauteed Swiss chard-corn salad, yellow tomato coulis and serrano chili oil, or the Mexican Cioppino seafood stew with mus sels, clams, bay scallops, baby calamari, pacific shrimp, crab, fish, lemongrass rice and tomato crudo chilipachole. Taco aficionados will be just as excited for Hugos Invitados’ many selections like the smoked brisket tacos with baby kale, to matillo-pineapple relish and avocado habanero sauce, or the pan-seared chipotle shrimp tacos with cabbage, cilantro yo gurt, mango relish, avocado puree and chipotle aioli.

Even the desserts harken back to Mexico, like Hugo’s Tres Leches, a gluten-free house-made sponge cake with almond, coconut, condensed milk and flaming Spanish merengue. And if you love chocolate, the flourless chocolate cake with amaretto cherry sauce or the strawberry and white chocolate mousse cake will satisfy anyone's sweet tooth.

And you’re missing out if you’re not stopping by on the weekends to try Hugos Invitados’ brunch. Some of the favor ites include the chilaquiles, which are tortilla strips served with sunny-side eggs, serrano peppers, onions, tomatoes, black beans and a choice of either salsa or smoked Morita sauce, and the smoked brisket machaca, which includes scrambled eggs, roasted chayote squash, potatoes, peppers and tomatillo sauce.

Whether you’re enticed by the flavors of Mexico or the ex tensive alcohol offerings, don’t miss out on Hugos Invitados, a Latin paradise located in the heart of Uptown Dallas.

“When you come to Hugos Invitados, you know that it’s… authentic, organic, modern Mexican food,” Matt says.

Still Crisp & Green Former Bank Now Serves Fresh And Flavorful Fare

Brightly colored fruits, vegetables, marinated proteins and fresh herbs line the prep station. They are chopped, diced and sliced daily to bring the freshest ingredients of which Crisp & Green prides itself.

The healthy, fast-casual eatery creates its marinades, dressings and drinks in-house, making it a standout among its competitors. The Agua Frescas are self-serve from containers along the wall and are emulsified fruits sweetened with Agave. Try the blueberry mint or pine apple ginger flavors for a refreshing drink.

Crisp & Green stands apart from similar venues with its 12 chef-curated bowls, nine warm protein options and an abundance of hot and cold toppings. From grains to greens, the flavor combinations are a medley of healthy choices.

Its seasonal menu reflects the best flavors of every season, like strawberries as part of its summer menu bowls and root veggies that will debut on the fall menu this month. Popular classics include the “Bowl In The Buf falo,” constructed of buffalo chicken and warm cauliflow er over brown rice. A lighter seafood option is the zesty “Thai And Stop Me” bowl, which tops mixed greens with shrimp, crisp veggies and drizzled in a tangy Thai peanut dressing. Expect to see an apple cider-style Fresca on the fall menu, along with seasonal squash bowls or the Wild Child dotted with Brussels sprouts.

One whimsical perspective to moving into the former bank building, what used to be the teller window in their drive-through now provides a behind-the-scenes view into the cooler of ingredients. The repurposed four-lane drive-through was transformed into an inviting outdoor bistro-style patio area that seats 40 and is equipped yearround with fans and heaters.

Blake Graves, the local franchise owner, prides himself on offering a fast, healthy food option in the community and takes it a step further by partnering with like-minded fitness businesses by hosting weekend fitness classes in the parking lot and replenishing after with a “Protein Pow er Play” acai bowl.

Next time you drive by Crisp & Green on Southlake Boulevard, drive through for a fruit smoothie to try the “Date Night Smoothie” blended with banana, Medjool dates, almond butter, cacao nibs and vanilla pea protein. Or how about a chilled bowl layered with acai sorbet, banana, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi and granola aptly named “Acai Ya Later?”

A Scoop And A Shot New Ice Cream Concept Takes Flight In Grapevine

Can’t decide between a cocktail or dessert after din ner? Buzzed Bull Creamery combines both treats, serving up small-batch ice cream kicked up a notch with top-shelf liquor. The liquor enhances the appeal of the premium ice cream without overpowering it. The cool franchise concept made its way to Grape vine last month, using liquid nitrogen to freeze the ice cream in seconds while you wait.

When the ingredients blend with the liquid nitro gen, it yields a smooth, soft incorporated ice cream. The alcohol is another ingredient infused as part of the recipe, and customers can choose from different ice cream, yogurt or sorbet bases. The many mix-in toppings are also decadent, but the buzz appeal from the rum, vodka, gin and other liquors make Buzzed Bull unique.

The creamery offers 32 flavors, 20 mix-ins includ ing Oreos, Butterfingers or Reese’s Cups, and plen ty of liquor options. Hard to decide on one flavor? Sample a flight with four featured monthly recipes of 4.3-ounce serving cups like Hard Apple Pie, Peanut Butter Pie, Cherry Limeade Sorbet and Island Para dise. Buzzed flavors start at 5% ABV, and patrons can upgrade the liquor or opt out for non-buzzed treats. One shot of liquor goes into each bowl and the milk shake contains one and a half shots. If it makes you feel better, it’s healthier than most ice cream with no preservatives, emulsifiers, eggs or heavy cream. Sci ence meets cooking with this enticing new concept locally owned and operated by the same team who owns the Texas Star Dinner Theater.

The locally owned franchisee, Paula Eyre said the most popular buzzed and non-buzzed concoctions are Death By Chocolate, which uses a chocolate vod ka with its mixture, or the Honey Pecan with top-shelf Woodford Reserve bourbon. Buzzed Bull’s espresso bar also serves a dual purpose, using the ice cream base as the milk instead of half and half, followed by a shot of liquor in the coffee.

This is not your mother’s ice cream shop, but she might approve. Ice cream and milkshakes are delicious alone, but it’s a gourmet experience accompanied by a bit of alcohol-infused goodness. Family-friendly of ferings of ice cream, shakes, sorbets and coffees are abuzz for fall at this quaint Main Street location.

Your squad will love getting back to nature with vibrant autumn hikes across the many marked trails and 46 mountain peaks. After a day outdoors, the award-winning wine list at Peak 47 and fine dining at the highly-rated Kanu restaurant both pair well with the expansive multi-colored views. Built in 2005, 25 years after the region hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics, the lodge is full of modern comforts including a range of health and wellness activities. The Lake Placid Spa hosts everything from outdoor yoga to massages with stones from the nearby Ausable River. TheWhiteFaceLodge.com

Get Jazzy In The Big Easy

Nopsi Hotel | New Orleans, LA

The Nopsi Hotel is a member of the National Registry of Historic Places, but don’t let that recognition fool you. The 2017 redesign of this restored landmark brings 217 rooms of heightened sophistication to New Orleans’ French Quarter. Start the night off right with a signature Gin Fizz at Henry’s Gin Bar and some live jazz at the rooftop pool. Dine at The Commander’s Palace without remorse, as you’ll be back to the pool for brunchy DJ sets the next morning. Finish the night off at one of NOLA’s legendary jazz clubs like Preservation Hall or the Davenport Lounge at the Ritz. Then take a walk with nature through the nearby Audubon Butterfly Garden for a moment of solace before you do it all again. NopsiHotel.com
